- Alec & Magnus
"Every time I think I'm missing a piece of me, you give it back."
- Jace & Clary
"Simon, don’t you think I’m scared of that too? You’re not the only one on that ledge. If we jump, we jump together. We fall together."
- Izzy & Simon

"I see it," Gideon said in a low voice. "I am not blind, and we are a people of many scars. I see it, but it is not ugly. It is just another beautiful part of the most beautiful girl I have ever seen."
- Gideon & Sophie
Kissed her in such a way that she no longer felt plain, or conscious of her hair or the ink spot on her dress or anything but Henry, whom she had always loved. Tears welled up and spilled down her cheeks, and when he drew away, he touched her wet face wonderingly.
"Really," he said. "You love me, too, Lottie?"
- Henry & Charlotte
"As long as you exist and I exist, I will love you."

"Tell me," Kit said. "Tell me what you need."
"Put your arms around me," said Ty. His hands were pale blue blurs in the air, as if Kit were looking at a time-lapsed photo. "Hold on to me."
- Kit & Ty
"It is as I knew," he said. "When I saw you upon the stairs of the Institute, and I saw the fire in your eyes, I knew you were the bravest woman ever to set foot on this earth. I regret only that such a fearless soul was ever hurt by the ignorance and fear of others."
- Gwyn & Diana

happy birthday to gabriel lightwood!
I rise from the ashes of writer's block and health problems to gift you all a little something I whipped up late last night for our boy's 163rd birthday <3 You can find this piece on AO3, too.
Cecily extended her arms and held the box up to him, eyeing him expectantly over the edges. “It’s customary to accept a birthday gift on your birthday, you know.”
Gabriel gaped. “Why did you get me—“
“If you finish that question, I will drop you to the floor so fast, Gabriel Lightwood.”
It was a promise more than it was a threat, and Gabriel dropped his shoulders in defeat, reaching to accept the box she was holding out to him. His chest felt fuzzy in a way that only happened around Cecily and nobody else. “Thank you.”
“You haven’t opened it yet.”
“Oh, you wish me to open it right now?”
Cecily scrunched her face in a faux anger—though, to her credit, it did look concerningly close to her actual anger—and huffed. “You are insufferable.”
With a grin, Gabriel opened the box. He titled his head at the contents, of which a familiar item lay. “Is this my pocket watch?”
“It is.”
“You are returning my own pocket watch to me as a birthday gift?”
Cecily burst into laughter, doubling over, leaving Gabriel standing in stupefied amusement. Whatever she’d planned, she obviously thought herself highly as a comedian. At least a full minute passed before she rose again and composed herself. She reached in and pointed at an unfamiliar item attached to the chain of said pocket watch. “I am returning it to you with something new.”
Gabriel followed her finger and looked at the small, coin-like item hanging off the chain near the clasp of the watch. Upon closer inspection, it was a coin, but not one he’d ever seen before. This one looked as if it had been sanded down and re-engraved. He took the piece between his fingers and lifted it for a better look. Only when it was closer did he realize that the engraving was of letters—arranged in her name.
“It’s a token,” Cecily explained. “Literally, yes, but it’s a sort of gift that mundanes give to loved ones. Old coins, out of circulation, sanded down and punched with new images and letters.”
Gabriel brushed his thumb over the engraving of her name, surrounding in a dotted pattern that followed the edges of the coin. Below her name was the image of a bird in flight. A heron. He looked back up at Cecily and smiled. “This is a love token?”
Cecily’s eyes grew comically large in surprise Gabriel rarely got out of her. “You know it?” she exclaimed in disbelief.
“I know it,” said Gabriel smugly, before he could no longer hold in the laugh in his throat at her shock. “I do live in London. Some mundane things are familiar to me.”
Her eyes narrowed, as if she were inspecting him. Gabriel highly suspected she was. “Sophie told you,” she declared after a moment.
Rats. Gabriel shook his head and lifted the watch out of the box in its entirety. “I will never tell you,” he teased, unwilling to surrender. But Gabriel admired the small attachment anyway, the fuzzy feeling in his chest growing the longer he looked at it. His understanding of the custom was scarce at best, but he did know one thing. “I thought I was meant to give you one of these.”
Cecily’s cheeks flushed a light pink, which made his heart flip. She really was unbelievably beautiful. “I despise gender roles,” she said simply.
It made him laugh again but he believed her. He’d never get quite used to how it felt to know someone so intimately, and have them know just as much about you. He didn’t even think he knew Gideon as well as he knew Cecily despite growing up with the man his entire life.
He slipped the gift of his own adorned pocket watch into his vest and lay the now-empty box on the table beside them. “Thank you,” he told her. “I do like this addition to my own pocket watch.”
“You don’t think that is all I have for you on your birthday, is it?” Cecily gasped. Her hands rose to her hips in an indignant stance. “I take birthdays seriously. You may not have high expectations, sir, but now you have me.”
It was an innocent statement, but something about hearing her say “you have me” struck enough emotion out of Gabriel to compel him to step forward and lower himself to give her a sweet kiss. She smiled into it, her own curving lips moving in time with his.
“What was that for?” she questioned when they’d reluctantly separated.
“I thought you might get annoyed with me if I just kept saying thank you.”
Her smile and eyes brightened into the precise glow that he always wanted her to have. A smile of genuine happiness. “I commend you on your solution,” she sang, and then took his arm. “It’s ingenious problem solving, though I do hope you do not use that solution with others.”
“It’s most certainly reserved for you,” Gabriel assured.
Cecily tugged on his arm and began to walk, directing him to wherever it was she led him. Her energy was excited, radiating enough off of her to make him feel genuinely happy on his birthday for the first time in years, even if all he did that day was follow her around.
[21 years later]
Gabriel woke up the same way he’d woken up for nearly 20 years—with Cecily’s pretty face beside him like a dream he was still in. Only this time, Cecily was wide awake and beaming at him rather than snoring (or acoustic sleeping, as she put it). “Happy birthday,” she said before leaning in for a smiling kiss.
“Mm,” Gabriel hummed. He sat up from his pillows, Cecily following, and attempted to blink himself more awake. “I age ten years every day in this house. What’s the use of a birthday anymore?”
Cecily remained unphased. Instead, she rolled out of bed and threw open the curtains with flair. “It’s your first birthday with Alex,” she reminded him. Gabriel attempted to act like he wasn’t aware that she hadn’t closed her robes. “And he’s six months old today, too. It is a very special day. At least it is to me.”
Gabriel softened, and smiled adoringly at his wife. She crossed her arms looking at him from across the room, but there was no true anger in her expression. She rather looked a bit sad. Cecily had never gotten used to how fast their children had grown, even Alex, who had come so recently into their family and yet here he was, six months old already. No fault to her—Gabriel grew sad if he thought about it too long, too.
He threw the sheets off himself and dragged himself out of the bed to cross the room to her. There had to be a magnet within Cecily, for he always found himself wanting to be close to her all the time. She leaned into his touch when he held her face in his heads. Gabriel leaned down and kissed her head, humming as he did so. “I love you.”
Cecily wrapped her arms around his torso and squeezed herself against him. “I love you, too,” she mumbled into his shoulder at the precise moment a cry pierced the otherwise silent air of their home. Gabriel laughed. “I’m being summoned.”
“I can get him,” Gabriel offered right away when Cecily pulled away from their perfectly comfortable embrace.
“Not on your birthday,” she scolded him. With practiced ease, she tied her robe and flew into her slippers. Halfway out of their bedroom door, Cecily peeked back at him over her shoulder with a stern gaze. “Don’t you dare think about anyone else on your day, Gabriel.”
She disappeared, off down the hall to the nursery, tending to their baby boy, the both of them knowing perfectly well that Gabriel Lightwood was incapable of thinking about anyone other than his family.
He reached over to his vest, laid neatly over the wardrobe, prepared in advance for him, and pulled his pocket watch. It was early—Anna and Christopher would not wake for another couple of hours. Gabriel smiled to himself and watched out the window at the rising sun, an old token brushed by the pad of this thumb along the chain.

Lights Out - Gabrily
Hi everyone! I'm back with another fic because I got inspired to write Gabrily this time. Like one of my older fics, this one also has a clean/PG version (the one below the cut), and a spicy version, that you can find on my A03 along with this one too. Hope you like it and send me requests if you want, I'll try to write what you ask💙
“I told you we got lost,” Gabriel insisted, stomping his feet as they walked an unmarked path on the mountain they were climbing. “We had to turn left at the pine tree, and we turned right.”
“Relax, Gabriel,” Cecily said with confidence, leading the way. “I know this mountain like the back of my hand.”
Gabriel rolled his eyes, and he hoped she was right even though maybe she wasn’t, but he would never say it out loud to his wife’s face. He and Cecily were about to celebrate their second wedding anniversary, and if there was one thing he learned in the years they’d been together, it was to rarely contradict her. She was headstrong, and stubborn, and when she was convinced of something, she didn’t change her mind. And this was one of those times when Cecily would not admit she was wrong. Or maybe she was truly right, and he was wrong. Time would tell.
It all started when she asked him what he wanted to do to celebrate two years of getting along most of the time, and loving each other deeply. “My parents own a cottage on the Snowdon mountain, in Wales,” Cecily told him proudly. “We could go there. It could be a chance for you to finally visit my home country.”
Gabriel was curious to see Wales, as he’d never been there in his life, and he accepted Cecily’s proposal. She seemed so happy when they prepared their luggage, and even more excited when they left on a train to Llanberis, the closest city to the mountain. He heard that mundanes were about to build a cable car that would take people to the top, but construction was still underway, so they had to climb the old way.
Cecily’s mother had been content to give them the keys to the cottage. She said that she and Cecily’s father hadn’t been there in years and they didn’t know in which condition the place would be. She suggested they stocked food in their luggage, too, because the cottage was far from the nearest village and she didn’t want them to die of starvation. Little did Cecily’s mom know that they might as well die of other things, like a bad fall. Snowdon was as beautiful as it was steep, and they had to be careful as they climbed.
“The sun is setting,” Gabriel commented a short while later, a little out of breath. “I think we should camp somewhere and wait for the morning to look for your parents’ cottage. Otherwise –” he stopped abruptly. “Cecy!”
Cecily had just slumped on the ground before him, her small valise turned on one side. “Damn!” she exclaimed with irritation, her head in her hands.
“Hey, are you okay?” Gabriel asked, kneeling beside her on the dirty terrain. He touched Cecily’s shoulder lightly, but she sighed audibly.
“I’m fine, I’m fine,” she replied, frowning. “It’s just,” she said with frustration, “Can’t remember!”
“So you’re finally admitting that you forgot the way to the cottage?” Gabriel spat, a little annoyed.
Cecily glared at him, and stood up, getting the valise from the ground. “No,” she said, starting to walk away briskly, the earlier annoyance forgotten. “I was talking about the lake, Gabriel. The way to the lake,”she explained. “I know the way to the cottage, it’s not far from the lake itself.”
Gabriel raised both of his eyebrows. This woman right here, Cecily Lightwood. She made his blood boil, sometimes, but he also loved her. “Let’s hope we find the lake before it gets too late,” he muttered, and followed Cecily.
“We’ll find it, we’ll find it,” she said proudly, and in the end, she kept her promise. After a few minutes or hours, Gabriel did not know, they finally arrived at the lake. It didn’t seem that big compared to other lakes he had seen in his life, and the water was very dark. It was probably deep. “This is lake Llyn Llydaw,” Cecily said, when they were closer to it. “Recall something?”
“We have a similar lake in Idris,” Gabriel commented. “Are they related?”
Cecily smiled, and put down her valise. The sun was setting behind the mountains, leaving a faint rosy and blue sky behind his wife’s face, partially hiding her smile. “I don’t know, honestly,” she shrugged, “but who cares. We’re here.”
“At last,” Gabriel said, and stretched his arms, the rest of their luggage discarded on the sandy terrain by the lake. He took a sip of water to freshen himself. It was summer, and climbing left him quite thirsty and dehydrated. He wiped at the sweat on his forehead and gazed at the lake. The scenery was scarce, but the sun setting behind one of the smallest hills made him think that the climb had been worth it.
Cecily was nowhere in sight, and he started to panic because he feared she left while he was distracted by the landscape. He noticed something on the sand right before the shoreline. Cecily knelt down and was drinking directly from the lake.
“Are you sure you can drink that?” Gabriel rushed to her, a little worried.
Cecily kept drinking, unbothered, and he thought she hadn’t heard him until she gazed up at him. “It’s really fresh, Gabriel. You should try it.”
“No, thanks,” he shrugged, brushing sweat from his forehead, continuing to look around. “This place is one of a ki–” he stopped abruptly. “You didn’t just do that!” he said with annoyance, his shirt and part of his pants drenched with lake water.
In response, she threw more water at him. “Oops!” she giggled, or more, laughed at him. “Look at your face!”
“It’s not funny, Cecy,” he protested, “until you’re the one who gets wet!” and he started to bombard her back with water too.
They were childish and carefree, throwing water at each other. And most of the moments Gabriel spent with Cecily were like that: she was a simple person who loved nature, and the little things, the ordinary things. She was teaching him how to relax and to enjoy life, and to be less hard on himself.
“I’m drenched,” Cecily huffed, looking at the state of her clothes, already stained by the mud and sand because of her previous fall. “But I’m refreshed, at least. This humidity will kill me,” she said, shaking her head and trying to fix her dress the best she could.
“You still look good,” Gabriel said softly, adjusting a strand of black hair behind her ear. Heat radiated from his cheeks, and it wasn’t just because of the warm weather. Drops of water descended on the side of her face, glittered by the last rays of the setting sun. He took her in intently, glancing at her deep blue eyes and the beautiful features of her face. She was beautiful indeed, and he couldn’t help but take her face in his hands and kiss her.
Cecily rose on her tiptoes to give him better access, and crossed her arms behind his neck. When they separated, she licked her lips and offered him her best smile. “You look good yourself,” she told him, “but I’m starving, and we have these wet clothes on, and –”
He was smirking. “Then I guess we’ll have to find that cottage pronto, because I’m starving too,” he winked, his chest and cheeks even warmer than before. He took her hand in his and their valise in his other hand. “Come on, show the way to the cottage, Cecy.”
“You won’t question my navigation skills anymore?” she raised an eyebrow.
“I never questioned anything about you,” he shrugged, and she shook her head.
“Whatever, I know I’m right,” she dragged him away from the lake. And, as she had promised, they found the cottage after a while, when night was already upon them.
“This doesn’t look too bad,” Gabriel commented, marveling at the two story building partially hidden by a tree. It was painted in white and had a small picket-fence that protected it from the small path that they were walking on. There were overgrown flowers all around it, an oddity, because it contrasted with the barren landscape.
A light drizzle had started to fall, and he was relieved that they reached the cottage before they’d get more soaked because of the rain. Their clothes hadn’t dried yet.
“It’s even more comfortable inside,” she mused, smiling at him. “I haven’t been here in years, but the view is just lovely. Wait for tom–” Cecily stumbled, and fell on dead leaves on the side of the path. “Ouch,” she lamented sourly, touching her leg and then her ankle.
Gabriel sighed, because it looked like deja-vu. “It’s not funny the second time, Cecy,” he said, walking to her anyway.
“I’m not joking this time,” she complained, glaring at him, when the witchlight he was holding lightened her face. “I’m bleeding, even! Damn,” she snorted.
Gabriel’s arms were instantly on her shoulders, checking her injuries. She was bleeding indeed, his hand coming up spotted with blood. “Let me help you,” he said gently, getting his stele to draw a quick iratze on her ankle. “Can you stand?”
“I don’t know,” she tried standing up, but her legs gave in and she sat on the ground. “It might be broken or sprained,” she complained, balling her hands into fists out of frustration. “Where are you going?” she called after Gabriel, who took their luggage and secured it under the white veranda.
“I wanted to protect the food,” he extended his hand to her, “the rain is picking up fast.”
His wife gave him half a shrug and took his hand, but instead of helping her walk, he picked her up in his arms as if she weighed nothing.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m taking you inside, Cecy,” his eyes widened, as if she had just insulted him. “You can’t walk.”
“I can walk,” she protested, “with one foot.”
“No you don’t.”
“Okay, I don’t,” she surrendered, as she fumbled for the key in her dress, and gave it to him. Thankfully, the key opened the lock. Everything was covered with a white cloth, giving the dark house an air of mystery. “I haven’t been here in ages, but it still looks the same.”
“Where’s the bedroom?”
“Last room on the left,” she instructed. There was a white cloth on the bed as well, and Gabriel placed her on the side of the mattress so he could remove it, then he helped her rest on a few soft pillows. He told her that he needed to use the bathroom, which Cecily didn’t find weird. They had made quite a journey to the house, and she realized she also needed to refresh herself, her clothes stained with mud and water. Later. She settled on the pillows, putting her witchlight on the bed so she could look at her ankle. There was dried blood, and she would ask her husband to help her when he returned. She drew another iratze while she waited for him, and felt better.
She heard footsteps, and Gabriel appeared at the doorway, holding a squared box in his hands. She frowned, curious, as he walked to her side and showed it to her. “Happy anniversary, my love,” he whispered, his eyes flickered with anticipation.
“It’s a croissant, a very busted one,” she noticed. “You remember I liked it.”
“I know, but –”
“Thank you, Gabriel,” her mouth curved into a smile, and she touched his cheek affectionately. “I love you,” she kissed his mouth. “Happy anniversary to you too.”
Happy anniversary, indeed.

Hiii recently I resd your fic in ao3 about When gabrily they were expecting Alexander, I was wondering of you could consider writing Gabriel telling Gideon about it :)
Of course!! I have to warn you though: I wrote this after studying for a huge exam so if it's reflects my dead brain, I'm sorry! I hope you like it :)
"I have something important to tell you.”
Gabriel had been staring at Gideon from his end of the ballroom for about half an hour and somehow his idiot brother still hasn’t realized it.
He finally gave up and walked over to the oaf.
“Hello Gabriel.” Gideon said as he approached. Thankfully his brother was alone and out of earshot from any passerby.
“Haven’t you realized I’ve been looking at you for an eternity?”
“Oh, I did. I was just trying to ignore you.”
“Why would you do that?”
“So that I wouldn’t have to talk to you.”
“You bloody bastard.”
Gideon only smiled, which further aggravated Gabriel.
“I have something important to tell you.”
“I’m sure you do.” Gideon said, taking a sip of water.
Gabriel pressed his lips together. “Cecy’s pregnant.”
It’s safe to say Gideon was not expecting that, something evident by the fact that the water he had been drinking came out of his nose.
Gabriel jumped back, avoiding the spray.
“Angel, Gideon, get a hold of yourself! Your monster.”
Gideon held up a handkerchief to his nose, though it was an absentminded gesture. He was utterly focused on Gabriel, his expression so flabbergasted, Gabriel felt to urge to look in the mirror to see if he’d grown another head. “Cecily’s pregnant?” He almost whispered.
“Yes.” Gabriel said, annoyance creeping into his current humor.
“They can still do that?” Gideon said, his eyes going wide, as if it had not occurred to him that his wife could still very much be fertile.
“Apparently, yes.”
“I must say, I’m glad it happened to you and not me.”
Gabriel sputtered, “Why would you say that to me? How is that at all comforting?”
“I’m only being honest,” Gideon said defensively. “If you wanted me to lie to you, you should have just said it outright.”
“People shouldn't have to tell you. Raziel, have you always been this insensitive?”
Gideon shrugged.
Gabriel ran his hand through his hair. “What am I supposed to do, Gideon?”
Gideon shrugged. “I don’t know; you really messed up.”
“What the hell, Gideon?” he was starting to regret coming to Gideon. He sighed, “Just, forget I came here.” He began walking away when he heard his brother call out to him.
“Gabriel, listen.”
Gabriel sighed and turned around.
“Both you and Cecily have always wanted a third child.”
“Yes, but ideally it would have been about a decade ago.”
“Ideally, our father would have been the exact opposite of what he was. But he wasn’t, and it felt so incredibly unfair to us that it didn’t make sense. And his actions had their…complications, but at the end of the day, everything’s alright now.”
“It wasn’t for a long time.” Gabriel mumbled.
“But we wouldn’t be who we are today if it had been any different. And what’s more, you wouldn’t be married to Cecily, don’t look at me like that, you know it’s the truth. Don’t you think it’s time to stop trying to take control over every little thing that comes your way and just let it happen? Do you really know it’s going to be horrible if you haven’t even experienced it yet?”
Gideon looked at him expectantly until Gabriel acquiesced and said, “I guess not.”
“Then stop being bitter out of the unexpectedness of the situation. What’s the worst that can happen? Cecily balances out your physical appearance, so there is no need to worry about what the baby will end up looking like.”
Gabriel shot him a dark look at that backhanded comment. But the rest was quite reassuring. What was he afraid of?
“We’re so old.” Gabriel said. “By the time it’s eighteen we’re going to be grandparents.”
“It’ll be fine. The baby won’t know anything different. And it’s probably for the better that you’re older; you’re more capable, don’t you think? Not as disastrous as we were in our early years.”
Gabriel huffed a laugh. “I suppose so.”
Gideon nudged his shoulder with his own. “You have nothing to worry about. Think of it as a blessing, because it truly is.”
Gabriel nodded, now remembering why he’d gone to Gideon.
“Thank you.”
Gideon ruffed his hair. “See? I’m not as insensitive as you labeled me to be.”
Gabriel shook his head. “I could have lived without the first part.”
...
Sophie approached Gideon as Gabriel walked off. Gideon held back a smile. He liked having Sophie by his side; he felt more reassured, complete.
“I’m assuming Gabriel told you what Cecily just told me.”
“Your assumption is correct.”
Sophie grinned. “I can hardly wait for the birth of the baby. It’s been so long since I’ve held such a small, darling creature in my arms!”
Gideon smiled, but couldn’t help but say, “They’ll be all right, won’t they?”
“I think they’ll be more than alright. They look happy. I think this baby will do them good. They have been a little lonely recently.”
Gideon couldn’t help but agree: Anna was far too independent and Christopher was always in his own world. They’re brilliant children, but Cecily and Gabriel seem like they need something to focus all of the attention their children don’t really need anymore (except for Kit, who occasionally tends to blow things up when unattended to). But another child would do them good.
“I agree. Though I will say, I don’t envy them for a second.” Gideon said, looking at Gabriel and Cecily, now reunited in a far corner of the room.
“Indeed,” Sophie said, shuttering.
PS This counts as my essay on how perfect Alexander being born was for Gabriel and Cecily

my biggest issue with chain of thorns is that we're told about some big/emotional events but we don't get to see them...
oh! will and tessa cried when they found out their kids were trapped in london! right after finding out their nephew died. but you won't get to read this scene
gabriel and cecily's son died! and they found out when his body was brought to them! but you won't get to read that scene!
will and tessa found out about the gracelet and were upset. but you won't get to read that.
charles confronted bridgestock and came out to the entire enclave in a very brave and dramatic way! but you won't get to read that!
like??? we had to suffer through 300 pages of a bullshit love triangle (i refuse to believe people honestly thought herondaisy won't be canon) but we couldn't get some genuinely important moments???

I was thinking that your Cecily is an Aries theory is so spot on because as a June Gemini person like Gabriel I can confirm that most of the people I get on well are Fire signs and if we have to listen to astrology an Air sign's best partner is a Fire sign
So definitely a good match hehe
i love when people agree with my theories
it just makes so much sense right! in all my research an aries/gemini match is almost always referred to as a near perfect match and that if the pair is a romantic pair they are also best friends and if that doesn’t describe Cecily and Gabriel then I truly don’t know what else does

Spring Was Lovely - Gabrily
Cecily and Gabriel have a mature talk a few months before their wedding. Set before TLH and a little after the ending of TID (Roughly 1880). I wanted to thank the anon who often sent asks about them and also @livia-dovehallow because you both inspired me to write this one shot ✨💖
Cecily had various discussions with Gabriel about the date they would finally become husband and wife. They always ended up with them choosing opposite seasons, which made Cecily even more determined to fight for spring. Spring was lovely. It was the time of the year when nature bloomed and there was color all around. The days start getting longer and the air isn’t too humid to stroll outside or have a picnic at the park. Yet, Gabriel seemed to like summer more, for some strange reasons he wouldn’t disclose. Read on A03 💙
Cecily, along with Tessa, sat on the sofa of her sister-in-law’s house in Golders Green, where she and her husband Gideon had moved in a little while after their marriage.  Not long ago, they had revealed that they were expecting their first child. “Have you set up a date?” Sophie asked casually, her hand clasped her stomach protectively.
Cecily had been happy, of course. She was glad for them and deep down, she knew she couldn’t wait to start her own family. Yet, only the thought of the mechanics of getting pregnant sent her into panic. She tore her eyes off Sophie’s belly and tried to focus on her kind, brown eyes. All the while, trying to keep her hands still on her lap.
She managed a smile. Sophie had just reminded her that her wedding was approaching, and she could feel her hands already wet. Perhaps it was better to fold them. “No, not yet,” she muttered. “We still don’t agree on the season.”
“Yes, you told us that Gabriel wants to have the ceremony in the summer,” Sophie nodded. “I advise against it. Imagine London’s humidity in June or July,” she sighed, stroking her belly. This time, Cecily couldn’t look away. She stared more than it was socially accepted. She remembered that Sophie said that was also when her baby was due.
“I believe spring or autumn would be the perfect seasons for a wedding,” Tessa commented. “Don’t you think?”
“I do,” she acknowledged, tearing her gaze from her future sister-in-law and focusing on Tessa. “I’m reminding him that everyday, but he’s still convinced that summer is the best because we can have a longer celebration outside.” She offered Tessa and Sophie a smile, and took a sip of tea from the cup on the table nearby. Damn, her hands were slippery.
She didn’t buy that he only wanted a big celebration. Gabriel wasn’t a sociable type by any means. On the other hand, if it wasn’t for her, he would be a wallflower and never dance at parties.
Tessa and Sophie looked at each other knowingly, and giggled. “They all say that,” Sophie declared. “But darling, the real celebration starts after the celebration. After everyone leaves.”
“I agree,” Tessa spoke softly, blushing. Cecily thought she was remembering her own experience and she glanced away. She had lowered her voice, even though there wasn’t anybody at home but them. “We were delighted that a lot of people showed up for our wedding, but we couldn’t wait to be alone and have our little excitement.”
“Not to mention the second wedding rune,” Sophie added, relishing the memory with obvious cherishment. Her cheeks were also rosy, and Cecily knew it wasn’t just because she was pregnant.
There it was. The talk. She had read books. She had tried to prepare herself. This, though, her friends didn’t know, and she never dared to ask anything about it to either of them. This was her moment to ask and get answers. She knew her friends wouldn’t judge her if she – she coughed, and was about to spill the remaining of the tea on her dress.
“Are you okay, Cecily? You look very pale,” Sophie noticed, touching her arm lightly.
“I’m fine,” she tried to say, touching her neck, and managed a smile at her two companions. “It’s just that I’m, I’m –” she couldn’t say it. She sighed and shut her eyes briefly. It was time to put the tea cup back on the table, if she didn’t want to break it. “The weather is nice today,” she said instead, because she didn’t know what to add to that. She probably looked like an idiot.
“Maybe it’s the tea,” Sophie suggested, about to grab a glass of water from the table. “You need sugar.”
“It’s nothing of the sort, the tea was good,” she assured them; Tessa was still looking at her with a worried expression. “It’s this conversation.”
Tessa frowned, and put her own cup back on the tray. “We can talk about something else, Cecily. I understand that this is a sensitive topic, and it’s fine if you don’t feel like talking about all of this.”
“On the contrary, actually,” Cecily confessed, clutching at her dress. “Please, continue.”
“Darling, you know that you can ask us freely about anything,” Sophie beamed at her, and this made Cecily feel better. “We are friends and we’re going to be sisters soon, aren’t we? And sisters help each other in time of need.”
“What was it like for you? I mean,” she felt her cheeks warm, but it was a question she’d been holding in herself for so long she was bursting with curiosity. “I don’t want to know the details. I’m just afraid – afraid of the unknown. Of not being good enough.”
“Not good enough?” Sophie asked her. “Cecy, it’s normal to be afraid. This is going to be a new situation for you. No one is born perfect, and no one is born already knowing what to expect about everything. I sure wasn’t, in that situation.”
“Sophie’s right,” Tessa nodded. “None of us is perfect. But you deserve everything good that is going to happen to you, most of all, you deserve to marry the person you love. I see how he looks at you,” she grabbed Cecily’s hand, “like you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to him. He loves you very much, and whatever happens that day, that’s not going to change.”
“I’m sure it would be best, if you discussed it with him,” Sophie added. “He is stubborn, but also very understanding.”
“I really should talk to him,” she said quietly. “And set a wedding date,” she said thoughtfully, glancing at the window briefly. Her hands still clutched at her dress, the conversation slowly moved to another topic. Her thoughts, however, kept derailing her mind elsewhere.
Gabriel returned to the London Institute after staying the whole morning out. He didn’t have much to do that day, except visiting a few shops to get some things he had long since needed. Cecily went to Sophie’s with Tessa, and he knew it meant to be a girl’s day, and he was glad that she had friends she could spend a few hours with.
He thought Cecily had been off these days and he'd been wanting to ask her if there was something wrong, but they were barely alone this week. He decided that he would face her today, at least to find out what was troubling her. They still couldn’t agree on a wedding date, and while it was ordinary for couples to have such discussions, this one had been going on for days and he sensed that there was something more to it that she didn’t tell him.
Discarding what he bought on the bed in his room, he ran downstairs to wait by the door for Cecily to arrive. He couldn’t lose her today, and he wouldn’t let anyone else ask her to do something. Especially her brother, who had had the mad idea to rearrange the library and he had needed everyone’s help to catalog books in the right order. He hoped Will wasn’t back.
He saw the carriage coming closer from the window by the door, and he went outside as if the building was on fire. Cecily was frowning when she came out of the carriage alone. She shot Gabriel a questioning glance. “Why are you here? Is everything fine?”
“I’ve been waiting for you, Cecy,” he said calmly, at least. “I need to talk to you.”
Cecily’s step faltered for a second, but she kept her expression neutral. She didn’t seem surprised, but he knew that she was great at hiding her true emotions.  “Let’s go to the drawing room, then,” she said, and lead the way.
She still hadn’t taken her coat off, and he hated that he’d cornered her but he needed to take his chance. There was nobody in the room. Gabriel closed the door shut behind him, and Cecily moved to the sofa, but she didn’t sit. He strode closer to her, and she gazed up at him with her big eyes. He still couldn’t read her expression.
“We still don’t have a wedding date,” he said, deciding to start from the heart of the matter. “And I wondered why.”
Cecily put a hand on her hip and raised an eyebrow. “Because we don’t agree on a date?”
“It’s not just that,” he said softly, so that she would know he wasn’t angry. “There’s something bothering you, something that’s making you have cold feet. You said you liked the spring, and I told you that I was okay with that.” He sighed, and couldn’t hide his worry. “Is it me, precisely? Are you having second thoughts?”
“No, absolutely not,” she cut him off with determination. “Why would you think that?” she touched his shoulder affectionately.
“Then what is it, Cecy? We will talk about it, whatever it is. We will solve it together,” he offered her a smile. “But please, talk to me.”
She sighed, and removed her coat, placing it on the side of the sofa, and took his hand so he would sit down on the blue velvet with her. “You learned to know me,” it wasn’t a question, but an affirmation. Even so, Gabriel nodded. “I don’t like when people tell me what to do, I don’t like orders,” she stopped before he could talk. “Not even my brother, you know that. I only do what Will asks me to do, when I want to do it.”
“That’s fair,” he replied. “I get it, yes.”
“I probably do that because I’ve been independent for most of my life, after Will left,” there was sadness in her voice, and Gabriel was aware of how Will running away to London hurt Cecily deeply. “You also met my parents. They seem fine now, but it hasn’t always been like that, you know. I told you that my father used to drink and gamble a lot, and some days, he was so intoxicated that he argued with my mother. Sometimes I saw her cry, and it hurt me. I never thought that my father could ever make my mom cry. One day, they argued about how they –” she sighed, taking a long breath, her eyes glassy, “stopped having sex. I heard my mother say that she would never sleep with him again whenever he was drunk, because she didn’t want to be used like a tool to soothe his pain. I was only thirteen, and I remember how this memory stayed with me.” She took his hand and held it tight, fixing his gaze on him. “I resolved that I didn’t want to marry. I didn’t want to marry a man that would treat me like that, one that would use me for his own pleasure and discard me. I didn’t want to just be a mother, a wife. I wanted to be more than that.”
“You are more than that, Cecily,” he stroked her chin with his other hand, wiping a tear falling from her cheek. “I hope you know that I’m not marrying you so you can continue the family line or justo to have a physical relationship with you.”
She nodded, tears falling more freely now, her burden now lighter. “I’ve been meaning to talk to you, for this is one of the reasons I was delaying the wedding date.” He didn’t say anything, just kept on stroking her hand for comfort. “The other reason makes me feel a little ashamed, but I guess I should tell you about that, because I’m dying here.”
“I want to hear it, please,” he begged, leaning closer to her. “Tell me what’s troubling you. Open up to me. It would hurt you less.”
Cecily bit her lip, and glanced at their hands. He tried to give her strength with his touch, which didn’t just mean she could trust him, but that he wanted her to be comfortable enough to share whatever was going on in her mind. He somehow suspected their wedding date had something to do with it. “I’m afraid of what’s coming after we get married,” she confessed. “Of what our society expects we do after we get married.”
“I don’t –” Gabriel frowned, and tilted his head. “Oh, I understand. You mean the consummation of the marriage, I guess,” he sighed, and she nodded quickly. She was blushing, and he felt his cheeks warm too. He wasn’t sure if Cecily could read his mind, but she probably could. Right that moment, he was sure she could see the relief on his face. “What are you afraid of?” he asked her bluntly. He wanted to say something else, but then the question came up and he couldn’t stop it. He realized he also directed it at himself.
Making love wasn’t a one person thing, where one had to lead and the other had to follow. And he wasn’t more experienced than her, by any means. Some girls had fancied him before he met her, but he never went past staring. Never cared enough to follow through until he met Cecily. Making love was a communion of souls and a private dance that the partners embarked on together. And he wanted Cecily, the person he was in love with, to feel comfortable about it when the time would come.
Cecily was meticulous, she wanted to do things her way because that was how she was used to living. It was hard for her to trust other people, but she trusted him. She trusted him because he loved her and believed in her, and he showed everyday that he was loyal and really wanted to make her happy. “I’m afraid of the worst that could happen,” she revealed, her voice broken.
“What do you mean, the worst?” Gabriel inquired. He wasn’t oblivious as to why she was wary to take that step, but he wanted to hear it from her. “If we’re to be married and build a life together, Cecy, I – I want to be a person you can rely on. And I don’t want to hurt you. So, please, explain it to me. Tell me how I can help.”
“I’m scared to let my guard down,” she looked him in the eyes, the light of the day slowly making space for the darkness of the night. “And let you see me, really see me. And create this bond, which, you understand, is important to me, and then –” she almost choked, “see it die afterward, after you get what you want for me.”
Gabriel frowned, his expression unreadable. “What would I want from you?” he asked her. “What would I want from you, if not — you?” He could see she was fighting back tears and the first thing he did was tracing her chin with his finger. “I love you, Cecily. That's not going to change even after that. I know these may seem like empty words but –”
“They're not empty, they aren't,” she nodded, and took his hand in hers again, squeezing it tight. “And they make me feel better. I feel so much better after telling you.”
“I’m glad you told me, Cecy. Really glad,” he hugged her, and she let herself relax in his arms. “I’ve had the same fear.”
He heard her gasp. She sat down and bore her red rimmed eyes into his. “I didn’t mean to do that, I’m sorry,” she wiped a tear from her face. “I’m just – surprised. I thought that you…” she trailed off, but it was clear what she meant.
Gabriel blushed again, and shook his head. “You never asked, Cecy.”
“Now that I know, I feel even better that we talked,” she touched the side of his neck. “We should talk things out, when we feel worried about something. That’s probably the key to a good relationship and I should’ve talked with you sooner,” she grinned. “I want us to create a family and live together until we’re old and gray, but to do that, we need to be honest with each other.”
“Honesty is what we have to practice, I agree,” Gabriel mused, raising an eyebrow. “Does this mean that we’re going to talk about our wedding date and finally decide on one?”
“There is nothing to discuss, I still want to get married in spring,” she shrugged, and they both laughed.
“Spring, that is,” Gabriel said, “It’s too humid during the summer. You were right.”
“I’m always right,” she giggled, and he couldn’t help but nod. And now they couldn’t wait to get married. Spring couldn’t come any sooner.
