You know how Lightwoods tend to come in threes and then one always dies super tragically?
Can we all collectively manifest that Alec and Magnus decide that two kids is enough?

I went to the Chain of Thorns tour tonight!
As promised, I saw Cassie today and wrote down her answers (paraphrased) to the questions asked to share here with you all -- and I asked her a question of my own, too!
It was a spoiler-free event, so those of you who have not finished or read any part of Chain of Thorns can read on safely :D
Question: Was it intentional that a Lightwood dies in every series? [referring to Max (TMI), Benedict (TID), Robert (TDA), Barbara (TLH)] Answer: No, it was not intentional and not planned to be that way. But there are so many Lightwoods. In retrospect, it sure looks like it, doesn't it?
Question: What was your process of creating Grace Blackthorn? Answer: Grace is a parallel of Estella from Great Expectations, as The Last Hours is a retelling of that story. I wanted a character to be an embodiment of "explanation not an excuse." I also wanted to give Estella the chance to tell things from her perspective, which is never revealed in Great Expectations. So Grace is that character who is able to display the other side of that situation through her point of view.
Question: How did you come up with the parabatai curse? Answer: It's a greek work and when I learned the meaning, I was immediately interested in exploring the power of non-romantic love. That's where the concept of parabatai came from. The curse then stemmed from expanding on what it means to be parabatai and who could and could not have one. That is where the curse came to be, and of course, how it became a focal point of TDA.
Question: How can I find a man like James Herondale? Answer: I asked myself the same question when I was younger: "Why aren't men like men in books?" I met my husband at a book club and we began sending books to one another that we liked. So my advice is to find a boy, girl, person who enjoys books, too.
Question: Who is your favorite parabatai pair? Answer: Will and Jem.
Question: Who in The Last Hours was the easiest to write? The hardest? Answer: The hardest characters to write were Grace and Matthew, as they both faced very complex problems that don't have an easy or single solution. The easiest characters to write were Cordelia and Lucie. Lucie, because she is also a writer and I very much had a passion for it the way I did when I was younger, too. Cordelia was easy to write because she was fun to write. (Bonus: The most fun to write is Magnus.)
Question: Who is your favorite character from each series? Answer: Didn't want to answer at first, but admitted the following: TID is Tessa. TLH is Lucie. TMI is Simon. No answer for TDA.
Question: Who in TLH was your favorite point of view to write from? Answer: Alastair, Thomas, and Lucie.
Question: Will we ever see Jace and Clary again in a prominent role? Answer: They will be in The Wicked Powers, but the story focuses on Ty, Dru, and Kit, so prominency will remain with them.
Question: How did you develop Ty [Blackthorn] and who was your inspiration for him? Answer: My stepbrother, who always said he looked for characters who exhibited similar characteristics as him, but it was never the same as having a character who was also autistic, and used the word, too.
Question: What made you decide to make Coredlia Iranian? Answer: I was born in Iran and Farsi was my first language. I can't speak it fluently now, but I wanted to make a character that incorporated that part of my life. To make her character and her family's characters, I had a group chat with my mother's friends, who were a bunch of 80-year-old Iranian women. They were very happy to help. Sometimes they argued amongst themselves about a question I had and who had the correct answer, and I would just sit back and watch it unfold while a little scared.
Question: Is there a plot line or detail you look back on and regret doing? Answer: THE FAMILY TREE. [She went on to explain that when she first made it, she had no intention to write any other historical book. But she got the idea for TLH while writing TDA, and suddenly the path and story she wanted to tell did not align with the already-published family tree. So basically, my theory was right and we have confirmation from CC herself that it's just a result of premature development!]
That was the last question of the night, but I saved the question I asked her myself for last! I asked her if Cecily and Gideon had official birthdays, and if so, if we would ever learn them, since we know the rest of the TID cast's birthdays from the 10th anniversary birthstone cards.
Her answer: I never told you guys their birthdays?! I have what I call the Bible and it contains everything about all the characters like their birthdays, star signs, etc. So yes, they do have birthdays. I don't remember them off the top of my head, but I'm sure it'd be no problem getting it out to you guys. There's no reason for not.
So, yes, they do have birthdays, and if she remembers that I asked, we might find them out very soon!
I had a great night and there were some hilarious answers to questions that weren't TSC-specific, but I simply just cannot write that fast.

Headcanons about Thomas (and some of the others) post-CoT (spoilers below)
He becomes super close to Eugenia, Matthew, and James--like even closer than before. With Eugenia, obviously they’ve always been close since she’s his sister, but I think it’s pretty much implied in the series that, even though he absolutely adores his sisters, Thomas wasn’t really hanging out with them outside of the time they spent together at home. Since he spent so much of his childhood feeling overprotected (and lowkey smothered), he actually wanted space from them. However, I think losing Barbara really brings Thomas and Eugenia closer and they start spending more time together. After Thomas moves in with Alastair, she has her own guest room at Cornwall Gardens and visits all the time. Eugenia’s favourite pastime is teasing Thomas, but if anyone so much as looks at Thomas (or Alastair) wrong, they’re never gonna hear the end of it from her. She can tease Thomas and Alastair all she wants, but nobody else is allowed to (except Cordelia--Eugenia gives her a free pass since she recognizes that the main privilege of being a sister is being able to mercilessly tease your brother). With James and Matthew, again, obviously they’ve always been really close, but it’s pretty clear that even within the Merry Thieves, there was a split, with Matthew and James being extra close on one side, and Thomas and Christopher (possibly as a consequence) being really close on the other. I like to think that post-CoT, when everything has calmed down and the shock of losing Christopher has finally settled in, Matthew and James recognize this and pull Thomas in closer. They do everything they can to make sure he doesn’t feel left out, or like he’s third-wheeling them or something. They also bring Alastair in too (at first because they figure it will make Thomas happy, but he pretty quickly becomes a real close friend to them as well). They worry so much about Thomas feeling lonely without his best friend that, for a long time, they make a conscious effort to invite Thomas every single time they plan to hang out. Thomas obviously knows what they’re doing, and tells them that it’s okay if they hang out on their own--they are parabatai after all, he’s aware that they’re closer to each other than they are to basically anyone else in the world--but they insist on doing it anyway.
Thomas and Alastair become close couple friends with Anna and Ari. They go on double dates a lot (or whatever the early 20th century version of a double date it lol--double picnics along the Thames??).
For a long time, Anna is one of the only people Thomas will talk to about Christopher. He’ll mention him in passing a lot, and sometimes he’ll talk to Alastair, Matthew, and James about Kit, but really, he only talks about him extensively with Anna. They have tea at her flat at least once a week, and they talk about him a lot during those times, even when it’s hard to talk about him with other people.
Thomas develops insomnia after CoT, and when he does manage to sleep, he has nightmares about Barbara and Christopher dying. He doesn’t tell anyone about this, including his own family since Gideon, Sophie, and Eugenia are still heavily grieving as well, but Alastair, of course, figures it out anyway and does what he can to ease the burden.
A few months post-CoT, Thomas and Alastair go back to Paris. They spend two weeks there, just relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. Alastair suggests the trip because he can see how stressed Thomas is, how hard he’s finding it to sleep and just go through life generally after everything that’s happened. Alastair hopes that a holiday in a place that holds such good memories for them, will, at the very least, give Thomas some temporary relief; that getting away from London for a little while, where Barbara and Christopher died and where he’s constantly surrounded by people, places, and things that remind Thomas of them, will offer him some respite. It’s not a long term solution, of course, but it does help cheer Thomas up a little.
When Thomas tells Gideon and Sophie that he’s going to Paris with Alastair for 2 weeks, Sophie hugs him tightly and then practically pushes him out the door towards the train station, while Gideon all but throws an envelope full of money at him and insists on paying for the hotel and whatever else Thomas wants to do. They’re just relieved to see their baby getting out and doing something fun.
Thomas and Alastair eventually (probably like 6 or 7 years after CoT) adopt a child. There are too many mentions of them being good with kids (Alexander, Zachary) for this not to happen.
This one isn’t specifically focused on Thomas, but before moving back to Cirenworth, Sona, Alastair, Zachary (and sometimes Cordelia, along with James), have a standing weekly family dinner with Gideon, Sophie, Eugenia, and Thomas. The location alternates, one week at the Carstairs residence, one week at the Lightwood residence. Occasionally, James and Cordelia will host it at their house. The weekly dinners continue even after Sona and Zachary move back to Devon and Thomas moves in with Alastair, and anytime Sona and Zachary come back to London to visit, they have extra big family dinners to celebrate.
Bonus non-Thomas-focused headcanons:
Gideon is Alastair’s dad now. I don’t make the rules, I just enforce them. Thomas told Sophie and Gideon that he’s spending the rest of his life with Alastair and Gideon took that on board immediately. He considers himself Alastair’s father-in-law from the very beginning and (as someone who has experienced being the son of a shitty dad), takes it upon himself to be the supportive dad that Alastair deserves.
Sub-headcanon to the one above: Alastair never really stops feeling like he has to be the one to take care of his mother, even though Sona really is fully capable of handling herself (old habits die hard). But whereas before that meant that Alastair just dealt with everything in total isolation, now, whenever he needs adult/parental advice, he goes to Gideon.
Matthew moves back in with his parents in the immediate aftermath of CoT. He doesn’t give up his flat, he moves back into it eventually, but for the few months following CoT, he moves back home and lets Henry and Charlotte take care of him as he detoxes and tries to move forward in his sobriety. They fuss over him, sit up with him when he has nightmares or feels sick, etc. He honestly feels a little juvenile, but he spent so long pulling away from them, that it feels so good and safe to just be a kid and have his parents take care of him again.
It’s mentioned at the end of CoT that Anna and Ari are thinking about adopting a child, and my headcanon about this is that someone (whoever it is that deals with shadowhunter adoptions) comes to them about a baby or young toddler whose parents have just died and asks whether they would be willing to adopt him. They hesitate for a second, because they had been planning to move into a home or bigger flat before actually going forward with the plan to adopt, but then the person mentions the child’s name and they immediately say yes. The baby’s name is Christopher.

CHRISTOPHER LIGHTWOOD DESERVED BETTER
weekly rant about my fav family and the atrocious writing:
I’m rereading chain of thorns and I’m at that part. y’all know the part. where a certain someone should not have died and how unnecessary it was. I like how grace is all like “you can stop this lucie.” bitchhhhh, couldn’t you have said that- hmmm, I don’t know maybe before Tatiana came out? like it’s so unnecessary and I am not here for CC hating the lightwoods and making sure each one from every generation dies.
Max- like what was he, an eleven year old? GONE. poor little boy 😭😭😭
Benedict- ok dude had it coming but he’s still a Lightwood and he died. plus Will makes a joke about it to Gabriel as if it’s not Gabriel’s trauma? the fuck. gabriel deserves better plus he needed more page time!!!! Gabriel and Gideon lost a father but yes, let’s make jests about it.
Kit- poor, sweet Kit. did not deserve to die like that. but of course, she’s not going to kill off any herondales because my god, we couldn’t survive that. can’t have our golden eyed and insufferable boys die. what vexed me most about this is the way CC went about it. I get they’re in this war but someone who is family and is practically family to y’all just died!!! but ok let’s grieve James and Matthew who are very much alive. wouldn’t be a CC book if we didn’t focus on the herondales.
tatiana- deserved it but I did not like how it was Cordelia. it should not have been her who killed her. Gabriel loses a son because of her, Gideon loses a daughter, Anna, Thomas, little Alexander, and Eugenia lose their brother, sister, cousin. literally Thomas loses his best friend who is basically his parabatai and his sister within the same year ish. I’m not sorry because it should not have been Cordelia to kill this wench.
Barbara- poor Barbara 😭 just wanted to marry Oliver but no, guess she’s got to go too. I would have liked to see more of her.
I swear that I do not want Magnus and Alec go adopt another kid if CC is going to kill them off. I know she holds herondales to this high degree but STOP HURTING THE LIGHTWOODS. yes, they are the best characters. without them, the world would probably be doomed. (looking at you jace lol we know you would’ve died without Alec or Izzy.)
adding Robert. he gone too. she even kills all the lightwoods in Thule like what is her obsession with hating this wonderful family? this is why I would rather she stop with the series. these are some of my fav characters but her carelessness and her desire to put one family above everyone else and simply act like nobody else matters is exhausting. as you know, I adore the lightwoods but it’s so draining to see them being treated like this. the only ones who I was glad to see gone was Tatiana and Benedict. you’ll never see her kill off a herondale. Stephen does not count because he wasn’t really introduced, and the other members were barely in stories, just mentioned.
and it’s fine if she has a preference. I love the lightwoods so much but there’s a different with you killing off multiple members of a family and writing out your fav family as untouchable. ahhhh, poor kit. he died and only Thomas and Anna had emotions through it all. we don’t even get to see Gabriel’s or cecilys reaction. what the fuck. I don’t know what CC was feeling writing this but I would have honestly rather she waited until she felt like writing it. it’s not fair what happened to Kit or the family over and over again. I wish she would do better but that’s too high of a hope for CC.
