Back training tips. 👍. . With so many muscle groups in the back, hitting it from multiple angles is important for overall development. At a minimum, do a horizontal pull and a vertical pull each time you work your back, like seen in the 1st and 3rd example. I also usually add in a 3rd movement that pulls upward to hit the upper and mid traps (2nd video). . Horizontal Row - good for all back muscles to some degree, but especially good for mid traps. Examples: dumbbell rows, seated cable rows, pendlay rows. . Vertical Row - great for lats and lower traps. Examples: lat pull downs, pull ups, (normal and wide grip for both). . Upward Rows - great for upper and mid traps. Examples: bent over barbell rows, bent over dumbbell rows, shrugs. . ⭐TIPS⭐ ⭐ No half-repping. Use full range of motion while under load. See videos as an example. Full extension and full contraction. If that means you have to lower the weight, so be it. If your shoulders remain in the same place, you likely need to increase your range of motion. ⭐ Pull with your elbows, not your arms. I know it sounds odd. 🙂 Imagine your forearms and hands are just big meathooks being pulled from your elbows. The goal is to put your back to work, not your biceps. ⭐ Squeeze your traps at the peak of each contraction by bringing your shoulder blades together. ⭐ Upper traps respond better to very heavy weight. My favorites for this are barbell rows and smith rack shrugs. ⭐ Do Iso-lateral and uni-lateral movements. If you use both arms, all the time, you may not realize one side is weaker than the other. Plus, these types of movements usually allow for an even greater range of motion since there isn't a barbell to get in the way. ⭐ Periodically (every 3 - 6 months or so) use different grips. Overhand (pronated), underhand (supinated) and neutral. Regular and wide grip. . I hope these help you! Have any questions? Have any tips of your own that you would like to share?
