loveless father

I remember when I was younger, I use to always point out flowers to my father. I probably resembled a child marveled by the toy isle at Walmart, but he always tried to shoot down my idea of flowers, telling me, “There is no such thing as flowers. Those are weeds.” I remember my utter confusion on his remark, like trying to explain the concept of death to a five-year-old. I just couldn’t fathom the idea at such a young age. I recall how I would argue with him, “No, those are flowers, dad. You can see that they are flowers!” The utter frustration and anger are still on the tip of my tongue to this day, and I find myself tasting it every time I speak. He would always drop the argument after a while one he saw how upset I would get over the subject, and he’d wait for the next time I brought up flowers so that he may try to shoot down my childlike euphoria. I don’t know if my father was intentionally trying to ruin my perception on flowers, but I still look at a daisy and say to myself, “What a beautiful flower.” However, such a line uttered by him has ruined my perception of one thing, and I don’t think he meant for his words to attack such a concept like a virus.

Love.

His words killed my idea of love. I don’t believe I’m deserving of love, like a sinner who thinks he can’t be forgiven. I don’t believe love exist, like an atheist who doesn’t believe in a higher power. Love is an unfathomable concept to me, like death to a child. I used to think love was a flower, but now I know love is simply just a weed.

insecurity wanders here

They are the daffodils and daisies.

I am the weeds, I am the grass.

I'm always chopped and changed.

I am rejected and cut down,

Watching the other flowers wear a crown.

A crown I desperately crave,

But my mind makes me a slave,

Telling me I'd never deserve to be crowned by anyone,

Telling me I'm nothing but a parasite plant.

I used to be beautiful before my masochistic mind took the lead,

And somehow I became a bad seed.

I am the once rich milk, now turned sour.

I am the wilted flower.

I am the red rose that once was.

I still love myself but it's harder on some days because it feels like nobody else does.
