rpf tier ranking
tier 0: actors. too easy. actors fall in love all the time due to proximity and amount of time spent together, especially if they are playing characters who are themselves in a relationship.
tier 1: bands (post-80s). writing songs together is incredibly intimate and requires emotional vulnerability. tours are great opportunities to spend a lot of time in an enclosed space together. sometimes they will sing into the same microphone at the same time so their mouths are close together which is basically making out if you think about it.
tier 2: bands (pre-80s). see above. however this requires slightly more mental fortitude because a lot of their fans will insist on their heterosexuality and get really mad when you say simon and garfunkel were kissing on each other or whatever.
tier 3: contact sports team. sports can be emotionally intense if you care about that sort of thing and obviously there are a lot of opportunities for intricate rituals wrt touching another's skin and locker rooms and all that. but this requires more imagination because there is less text (i.e. songs or correspondence) to use as evidence.
tier 4: solo artists. this is where things can fall apart. you have to choose both figures in the ship wisely and exercise a decent amount of creativity because they are not compelled to be together all the time (see above). you can cast a wider net but that lack of specificity may hurt those with weaker imaginations. also they don't always write their own songs.
tier 5: historical figures. this varies a lot both in terms of plausibility and social acceptability. depending on how old the figures are you could legitimately turn this into an academic dissertation if you wanted to commit that hard to it. however you may also come up against a lot of opposition among your colleagues. one must be intellectually prepared to present concrete evidence and argue one's point. (however, you are also more likely to convince people b/c the figures are old and dead and can't deny it. and probably didn't know what rpf is.)
tier 5.5: historical figures who have been fictionalized in media. this depends on the tone you take but unfortunately you will always be up against thomas jefferson hatsune miku binder as the starting point for the general public's thoughts on your hobby. so good luck.
tier 6: racecar drivers. if you are into racecar rpf i assume you are capable of seeing colors that are not visible to the ordinary human eye. they are literally in cars. the creativity required to wring a [romantic] narrative from people driving cars around a track is beyond my comprehension.
tier π: living politicians. you are a pariah among even your most deranged peers. no one respects you. you are categorically a weirdo and beyond help.

ೄྀ࿐DO YOU ENJOY WHAT YOU DO?
yandere! 80's male pop duo x reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dimitris and Seth have been the best of friends since they were young school boys. The two of them would regularly perform little 'concerts' in the others garage, practically torturing the neighbors with the shrilling noise of sticks hitting tin cans. The only thing they ever wanted to truly accomplish in life was to be able to make music with each other. As they grew older and experimented with their sound, their harmonious and incredibly danceable music immediately sky rocketed in terms of success. Fans were constantly fainting and waving their arms around when they attended one of their concerts, it was a common occurrence for at least five undergarments to be thrown onto stage during a show of theirs.
They each had their own unique look that attracted dozens of people. Seth had his tanned skin, dark brown fluffed out hair with a caramel colored streak going right through it, the beauty mark right under his eye, his droopy brown eyes and the gold hoops hanging from his ears. Dimitris had his short silky black hair, umber skin that became dewy under the sun, his thick Tunisian accent, the dimples that appeared on his face even at the slightest hint of a grin and his naturally heavy lashes.
The both of them will join forces in writing and producing music based on their intense love and devotion towards you. Several of the songs would be accompanied with hyper beats and catchy ad libs, others would be paired with voices filled with desperation and pure agony along with an emotion rendition of their piano. The second option perfectly depicts their never-ending affection towards you, they love you so much that they're willing to cause terror to anyone who opposes their behaviour.
Even if they were to potentially be caught for their rage-filled actions, nothing would ever come from it. Everyone would suspect that some 'rando' trying to make for themselves planted the evidence against Dimitris and Seth. The two of them are loved internationally by the young and old, they're the most likely to be deemed as honest and trust-worthy than some random people accusing them of actions that they would never commit.
"Even if they did actually do all that, maybe those creeps deserved it." "Yeah, they're total barf bags."
Neither of them fit the stereotypical '80's rockstar' persona because they didn't necessarily write rock'n'roll music but that was how their music was categorized at times, and, they don't have sex with random women, or more so, groupies. Neither do they write songs with hidden racist meanings as some of the other people in the same career path as them do.
The both of them absolutely believe that you deserve nothing but the best, they do everything in their will power to prove this to you, as well. They go all out when it comes to certain holidays, birthdays and anniversaries. On the day of your birthday, you'll wake up to the house filled to the brim with roses in vases, gifts sent by highly regarded celebrities along with fashion and makeup brands, notes that the two men wrote in admiration for you, a scheduled party at a nearby chateau and immediate tenderness from the both of them as soon as they see you stir awake.
Dimitris and Seth take immense joy in spoiling you with everything and anything you could ever want. With the way the two of them present themselves to the world, it's no surprise to anyone when they find out that the both of them enjoy dolling you up.
and they do an amazing job at it.
Seth will match your shoes to the chosen dress he'd purchased just for you at an antique market, applying your choice of powdered make-up to your face, clasping a diamond necklace around your neck and kissing your lips when he's finally finished. Then, when the cold night finally arrives, he'll wipe and wash your face, massage your scalp along with your body as the two of you sit in a warm bath he'd drawn. After washing your face with a light blue 'Pré de Provence' soap bar, he'll gently pat your cheeks, lean in to kiss your forehead before saying,
"My beautiful baby, aren't you just perfect? Say it, tell me you're perfect."
Dimitris adores taking you out to taste several different sweet and savory meals that you aren't even able to pronounce. As the two of you sit in a dimly lit restaurant, paparazzi are taking photographs of him looking at you with a severely love-drunk facial expression. A magazine with the headline, "Dimitris and his shared lover, newly head over heels fool!"
You always tag along with them when they go on tour, no matter what, you're going! If you don't work from home and your schedule is the issue, they'll just bribe your boss with some harmless money
just kidding! They don't want you working outside of your shared five bedroom home in Hollywood, California. They'll never hold you hostage in your own home, are you...crazy? They honestly don't want to even think about you struggling with money and there's nothing more that they'd love to do than take care of you.
Seth will take you to meet his father on the sea-side villa he grew up in. The pleasant aroma of bamia and feteer meshaltet fill your nostrils and the thought of eating the prepped dishes makes you smile. His father offers up a warm and welcoming smile as he listens to you speak about your interests and what had drawn you to his son. He immediately finds your presence calming and wishes for you to visit him once more alongside his son. Even his father's dog, Neo, seems to like you as he sits on your lap whilst you're on the couch and speaking with Seth.

Psychosis and schizo spec experiences are messy, and complicated, and often don't fit the societal narratives.
Many psychotic people have experiences that look like symtoms of other disorders, and strict categorization and separation between symptoms and disorders often don't take schizospec and psychotic people's experiences into account.
Schizophrenia, as an example, is commonly classified as a neurodevelopmental illness, and comes with a range of experiences of neurodivergency that do not neatly fit into any one box/neurotype, yet can be both very disabling and very profound. Similarly, most schizospec people are prone to dissociation, and there's an overlap between plural people and psychotic communities.
For this reason and others, I'm not a fan of separatism in the neurodivergent community, which too often targets psychotics, by focusing on proving that this or that group is not "crazy" like "those people".
Occasionally this takes on some insidious forms within the different communities, where "deviant experiences" of odd symtoms that don't align neatly with the narrative of the associated disorder, are dismissed as fake, problematic, harmful - occasionally as ableist in and of themselves. This narrative is actively harmful to psychotic people.
I'm not a fan of arguments that hinge on the notion that large numbers of people are lying or mistaken about their lived experience, and sincerely, as someone who has read an unreasonable amount of research throughout my studies, psychological science is interesting, and useful, but it is never exact, and it is full of biases, blind spots and bullshit science hidden behind statistics and overreaching conclusions. Pointing out bad research is not "anti science", it is in fact pro science. I am a scientist.
I consciously reject the notion that the diagnostic manuals are anything more than a semi competent attempt at making a comprehensive classification of symptoms. This doesn't mean that these constructs aren't hugely influential, or that they don't describe real symtoms, but it is important for Mad and Neurodivergent activism to move beyond this reductive understanding of mental diversity.
So while I'm happy to provide info on the definitions of various disorders etc, because it has real world applications, I am more interested in what we all have in common, and in finding solidarity across diagnostic borders.
In the end, my solidarity is with the weird kids. The quiet ones, the fucked up ones, the ones who don't feel like they belong or fit anywhere. With symtoms and experiences and diagnoses like an ill-fitting set of clothes.
I want to fight the stigma, but I don't want to fight it by assimilation. It is not our job to be "normal" or "easy to understand and categorize".
I want radical inclusiveness, and I want it now. I want the judgement of harmless odd behaviours to stop, I want the mental health communities to stop fighting each other and throwing each other under the bus in the name of being palatable.
We don't have to be palatable to be worthy. We don't have to fit into a neat little box to be taken seriously. We are all deserving of non-judgemental love and support.
Our goal should not be to be neurotypical, it should be to live happy and fulfilling lives within the circumstances we were dealt.
Us psychotic weirdos need better options than to be monsters, or to be invisible.

Hi there! Love what you're doing here. I have a question. What about things that are supported by the donghua but not the novel? I don't think they could simply be categorized as fanon but they're definitely not canon either. So I was wondering how those facts would fit in the classification? Or things that outright contradict themselves between sources, like how the washerwoman came to be lbh's mum.
Hi! This is a good question (and one I actually planned to make a post about, so here it is).
My posts here are specifically referencing novel canon, and when I refer to canon, it is always to the novel. The donghua, as an adaptation, would be a kind of secondary canon, and my view is as follows-- where it conflicts with the novel, then novel canon takes precedence. Where something is supported by the donghua and not the novel, then I will be classifying it as fanon-neutral.
There are quite a lot of differences between the two, including significant changes to the characterization portrayal of SQQ in the donghua vs the novel. Perhaps someday I'll make more posts specifically on the topic-- but even though the donghua is an official adaptation, I personally hold it on the same level as fan interpretations.
I will, however, try to point out donghua-only details wherever I can remember (I certainly don't watch as religiously as I read!) any time something like that is relevant to one of my posts. If anyone knows any donghua-only facts that I've missed, definitely feel free to add them onto my posts! I'll reblog that, and add it to the original post with credit as well!

Considering how much of a musical fan Viv is, I’m surprised her shows themselves aren’t compared to musicals since they are categorized as musicals, but regardless of that, Stolas and Blitz’s dynamic, and Stolas’s entire thing with his family, reminds me of the musical Falsettos but in a bad way. Stolas, like Marvin, is a gay man who leaves his family consisting of a wife and child behind to pursue love with someone else, but, unlike in Falsettos, Stolas isn’t really called out properly for the things he’s done and even if the show ever decides to make him hold more accountable, it probably wouldn’t be executed that well.
So glad someone mentioned Falsetto’s, as someone who loves that show, it’s literally just…the better version or everything Stolitz could be. Marvin and Whizzer are another example of flawed complicated relationships that are written very well, especially gay relationships and struggles of toxic masculinity. Falsetto’s is another one of those shows that Vivzie is trying to replicate, or be similar too, something of nuance, a deep gay story about messy characters doing messy things, except this musical shouldn’t even be in the same breath as Helluva Boss lol.
I’ve seen so many others musical fans make comparisons, but they’re not the same, especially since the character that left his wife and kid to be with another man is…gasp…actually painted in a bad light, and they make it clear that despite loving Whizzer, he was using him and emotionally manipulating him. In the end of the show Marvin goes from a complex toxic man to actually changing in the end, something Helluva would never do, it lacks all the qualities, emotion and complex themes that Falsettos has, especially since the show perfectly prides itself on being a musical where all the characters are heavily flawed/no where near perfect and that’s okay.
There’s no point in even comparing the two because not only are they completely different, but one of them clearly understands what it wanted while the other can’t make up its mind on what it wants and is too cowardly to actually portray their characters as flawed and messy. I actually suggest Viv and the HB fandom watch Falsettos so they knows what writing gay relationships + messy flawed main characters actually looks like. Oh, and so they also know how what a cohesive story looks like too. <3

Can I use your hanahaki AU???? I promise I'll give you proper credits. I would be grateful if you'll agree.
Of course! Any and all prompts here on AUideas are fair game -- we've posted them with the intent to share and spark new ideas, so asking for permission is unnecessary. What we do ask, though, is that you make sure to credit us with the original concept so others can find us and be equally-excited about starting their own writing.
As a thank you, here's a list of some new and interesting Hanahaki Disease AUs!
Confused about what Hanahaki's is? Here's a link from Fanlore that explains it in more detail, but the TL;DR is that if Character A has an unrequited love / crush on Character B but Character B doesn't feel the same way, Character A's lungs will slowly fill with flowers until the petals expel from their mouth. Needless to say, this is usually deadly...
In a world where Hanahaki's Disease was spreading like wildfire, Character A watched the news as the CDC decreed a ban on social media for the safety of the public -- fans had been developing fatal cases of Hanahaki's Disease for celebrities and influencers who could never possibly love them back.
Character A has been inflicted with Hanahaki's Disease; they just couldn't control themselves, and when they see their crush (Character B) in public, Character A has an attack. When the petals are finally cleared away by passersby and they can draw in a strained breath, they look up from where they'd fallen and see that they're in the arms of Character B who stares down at them with conflicted eyes. Character B can't help but be concerned for Character A's safety, but the type of flower petal Character A is producing has their favorite scent, and it's taking everything they have to not see if Character A's mouth tastes as good as it smells.
As a divergence of the classic Hanahaki's Disease concept, this universe manifests certain flower types based on the quality of the crushee's heart; the worse a person they are, the more pain and torment the afflicted will experience (thorns, thick roots, putrid smells, etc.). This developed as a safety mechanism to help Hanahaki sufferers break off their obsession quickly, but some infatuations are hard to escape.
Characters A and B had been in a long, loving relationship with one another for years at this point, and they never thought they could be happier...that is, until Character B has a coughing attack in their bed. Character A rushes to their side and their eyes go wide when they see a single rose petal fall from their best friend's lips and into their palm. The room tenses.
As a last resort, some Hanahaki's Disease sufferers choose to sign up for a dating service that aims to specifically pair up Hanahaki's sufferers in the hopes they'll fall in love and be cured. Easier said than done, of course...
"Listen, officers, I know it's a CDC emergency, but whenever I fake a Hanahaki's attack in public, I just get so much sympathy from everyone around me. It's like...it's the only time I really feel loved, you know? I was about to fake another attack here on the street when I found them. I don't know if they're still breathing, but I tried to pull out as many petals as I could-- NO, I don't know their name, but LOOK! Their lips are even more blue than the stupid f*ckin' petals on the ground, so HELP THEM!!" AU
It was thought that when someone died with Hanahaki's Disease, they were all but cured since their love died with them. After the first few bodies were buried, though, flowers matching the ones that killed them always sprouted from their graves. Character A's job isn't to clean the stones or stop grave robbers -- their job is to monitor the Hanahaki remnants' growth, make observations, and categorize new flora.
Obsessed botanist and activist Character A purposefully infected themselves with Hanahaki's Disease, but not for sympathy. They sought out the off-chance that their blood, their body, and their very bones were special enough to warrant the growth of a rare, extinct plant that could save the world. And if they couldn't do it, well, then they'd just have to get creative.
Overseas factories were known for their poor conditions, but a whole new meaning was brought to the word when Hanahaki's Disease began spreading like wildfire. For a small paycheck, these factories would house Hanahaki's sufferers and collect their petals to use in perfumes, ceremonies, etc. With the fatality rate of the disease being so high, they have a hard time keeping their stock consistent (without some foul play, that is).
Looking for some more Hanahaki's Disease ideas? We've got you covered! Here, you'll find all our Hanahaki's Disease ideas; if you'd like even more, shoot us an ask.
Hope this helps out, and happy writing!

TMAGP (and TMA, indirectly) Spoilers and Thoughts...
You have been warned...
I wasn't part of the original TMA crowd back when it was first airing. I'd heard mutterings of it, but never really thought much about it. To be honest, I probably wasn't mentally ready for it back then. Instead, my younger sister started listening to it last year and then kept talking about it until something she said made me go, "Y'know what? Okay. I'm in."
I ended up bingeing through it during work this past October, and holy sh*t. I fell down the rabbit hole hard. (Maybe, in this case, it would be more akin to running face first down those coffin stairs? I digress.) Being so new to it when everyone else had already been swallowed up by the sky, it was cool to dig into the Wikis that had already been made, to see the links and foreshadowing.
But now, it's the beginning of TMAGP, and I actually get to listen the day they release, to jump on here, or reddit, or tiktok, or wherever to be a part of the theorizing AS IT HAPPENS. And boy oh boy, I'm happier than Simon Fairchild in the stratosphere.
Do I have a notebook to jot down my thoughts as I listen? Of course, I do. Do I have multiple tabs open, some with ARG info, some with TMA info, and yet more with references to alchemical symbols and practices? Duh. Have I started my own spreadsheet for it all? Well, if you knew about my Lego Dimensions spreadsheet.... nevermind. Yes, I have.
But nothing beats being able to talk (or type) about it with other fans, like my sister, or those faceless avatars (lol) of the interwebs. And man, has my brain been CHURNING.
First, let me get out of the way that I wasn't able to take part in the ARG as it was happening, and my goodness! I'm so happy there are other people out there like me who were able to sum up and load it up for the rest of us to learn about. No idea how much of it will be *necessary* to unlock all the secrets, but I'm the kind who loves to know trivia just cos. And the details I am learning definitely pull me deeper.
Second, I feel like in the beginning of TMA, there was barely anything for the listeners to dig through. One guy working on behalf of an organization, trying to dig through seemingly implausible and overly spooktastic first-hand statements dating back centuries that are in crazy disarray from the previous archivist, and he's laying on a hefty helping of "this is utter balderdash, complete poppycock, and absolute piffle" opinion. It was a slow burn, something that (as an American, and being exposed to so much more instant gratification in storytelling than necessary) UK storytellers seem to be experts in, and was even more expertly done in this case, since so many little things had to eventually build up without listeners automatically assuming what would happen next, without them getting bored.
But TMAGP is already so full of so much extra stuff, so many little things (even before it was released) that we may all get BURIED in the sheer amount of data we think is vital. We're not listening to tapes this time, we're definitely listening via internet-connected devices, like computers, mobile phones, and security cameras. So, while TMA had old tape recorders magically appearing (or were they being dragged by hordes of spiders?) and switching themselves on so they could hear all the random happenings within the archive, TMAGP is no longer reliant on such hand-wavery. Whatever/whoever is listening can do so from anywhere to anyone they want. That makes the world of TMAGP
SO MUCH BIGGER.
Third, I know not everyone who listens to these things is like me (or, let's face it: us--there are so many fans doing regular deep dives on here, we should have our own categorization on the wiki). There are bound to be listeners who just leave everything at face value and wait for the story to unfold itself organically, and when it's done, it's done. But even as an adolescent, when I got into something, I did my best to listen to, watch, or read everything I could find on that very niche thing. At least for a while. (Hello, undiagnosed ADHD!)
So, I watched/listened to a couple interviews and Q&As regarding the new show prior to release. And while both Alex and Jonny have been clear saying you don't have to have listened to TMA to enjoy TMAGP, I kind of think just saying that is leading us TMA fans in a very specific direction. And I think it's very intentional, and that a lot of fans either haven't heard about it yet, or are choosing to ignore it.
They say that TMAGP is tangentially related to TMA in that there will be familiar themes, but
it's taking place in a completely different universe from TMA;
time in TMA worked differently (especially during the Entity Torturepalooza in S5) towards the end, so dates of events there may not line up with dates or events in this universe; and
the main or overarching theme is different.
In TMA, the story was "what makes a monster a monster?" As in, is there a line one crosses that they can't return from? Is it a physical manifestation, like it alters their appearance? Is it an action they have to take? And does that action have to be done willingly, or can it be coerced? Does becoming the monster to protect someone else, or to achieve a greater good... does any of that matter?
In TMAGP, they've already said that the story will be "what makes a person a person?"
The implications of that sentence are many and mind-boggling.
I first thought it had something to do with the idea of the humane (not human): kindness, empathy, compassion. The ties that bind us together as people (like being fans of a little horror podcast from across the pond) could be part of this.
But, now that we have 5 episodes out, and a metaphorical army of lore-deep-divers digging through every word and sound effect and episode title, I think we can truly start to figure out where we're heading.
Artificial Intelligence.
It struck me as I was re-listening to the first episode this morning. (I really am trying to fill out my spreadsheet in a semi-logical manner and with as many pertinent details as possible, really. That's the main reason I was doing that this morning. At least, that's what I tell myself.) We are hearing all these happenings over web-connected devices (don't think I don't see you, Alex and Jonny, and your oh-so-hilarious punning!), the OIAR employees are working on a modified business-forward version of Windows NT 4.0 that precedes Windows 95 that has a name that we interpret as 'Freddy' (or Freddie, depending on where you are in the transcripts), one of the documents from the ARG was a spreadsheet called 'Klaus' (which IS the name of the former IT guy Gwen's asking about because she heard/saw young Lena arguing with him), and we have at least 3 text-to-speech "voices" that Alice has given names (Chester, Norris, and Augustus).
All of that was running through my brain, and then I heard this passage within the first few minutes of the episode:
LENA - Nonsense. Sam is the only one who has had any cake so far. GWEN - And that was only because you practically forced it down his throat. SAM - No, no, it was… nice. LENA - People like chocolate cake.
People like chocolate cake? She didn't even ask her employees (all 5 of them at that time) what flavor they'd prefer, or if they'd want something else? No. She just knows a fact that "people" like chocolate cake, so of course, her employees--who are people--would like chocolate cake.
Almost like a computer following a logic-based workflow, perhaps?
Lots of people have been trying to figure out who in the office is the Big Bad, and many are saying Gwen just because of her ambition and her last name (Bouchard), but I think her name is a red herring. Others are saying Alice knows more than she lets on (and so many are hating on her, and I will NOT ABIDE THE ALICE DYER SHADE because I love her and I would very probably hide bodies for her) but I agree that certain things she's said are a little sus, though they really could just be her personality. I really have known some women like her, and they are some of my favorite people. (Plus, the fact that we now know that she's the most tenured employee at the OIAR--save possibly Lena--does make the brain churn some more.)
But with this line about chocolate cake, and how she was unable to join them at the pub, and how we haven't had a scene with her outside of the OIAR office, it makes me think that Lena might just be part code.
[Let me also add this really quick: I've seen A LOT of people trying to make the current episodes fit into Smirke's 14 +Dekker's 1, but I don't think the Entities as we codified them are what we're dealing with in this universe. I think trying to link everything back to that show will be a lot of wasted thought, because as they said, this isn't a direct sequel. (Do I think it's actually Jon, Martin, and Jonah--yes, Jonah, not Jurgen--trapped in the computer system? A bit, but it won't shatter my appreciation if the voices are something else entirely.)
Plus, I've seen others saying that the statements we've heard, while creepy, aren't all necessarily to do with fear. Most of them are about desires and obsessions.
The woman who wanted so desperately to see her dead husband again that she'd get scammed over and over to possibly resurrect him;
the person who wanted to spelunk an 'unsolved' site to the point of crime;
the woman who wanted to finally feel comfortable in her skin to the point of disfiguring herself;
the man who wanted so badly to climb out of his assigned station and achieve fame that he'd regularly 'feed' his violin blood from other people;
and the man who wanted to feel the same terror he felt when watching scary movies with his dad when he was a kid to the point of chasing down 'borderline illegal films' and ignoring LITERALLY ALL the red flags to the end.
I think that theory is the closest to what we may actually encounter.]
I've seen others on reddit saying they think that this series will be about the race to create the philosopher's stone--the stone that creates the elixir of life and, essentially, immortality. I think it's a valid idea. But, what if it went further than that?
Because with all the alchemical hints dropping in the show's logo, the ARG, and the 3-category system to the statements (yes, I'm keeping track) that could make one think of the spirit, the mind, and the body in alchemy....
What if they're trying to create life from software?
What if these entities or desires or whatevers have been working through some ancient busted code, feeding off statements from "real" humans experiencing strong emotions, watching the employees that work with it every single night, so they can create something as close to a human as possible from just wires and 3 decades of unreadable code?
Oh lord... it just occurred to me that--due to this being a HORROR podcast--they might need to collect a skin suit for the Not Quite Human. Is that what happened to Klaus? Ick. And now I'm hoping I'm wrong.

another quick ask to add 2 the discussion: I *have* read fanfic in fandoms I dont really "participate" in, but its generally OC-heavy fics in fandoms that lend themselves to like... fan worldbuilding ig? think pokémon or warrior cats, though the specific fandom I was reading in was MLP:FIM & the fics had like no canon characters in them. But also I feel like thats a different thing entirely than reading fics that involve the canon much more heavily, and also I *did* watch the first few seasons of mlp so I had some context.
Nodding along with this, yeah I totally get it!
Firstly, yeah, all your points about oc-centric and lore-expanding fan stories not always needing as much context from the source because they have so much to establish within themselves anyways: very very true. And that establishes an interesting theoretical gradient between source and fanwork! Kind of a funny little artistic ship of Theseus situation, love that lol. Once again art defies easy categorization, which delights me!
Secondly, you're probably interacting with these stories for fandoms youre not in because a friend made them, right? I feel like that's an added relevant connection between source and fan art that hadn't been brought up yet. Of course it never feels like I'm missing out on anything that matters if my friend is the one giving the play-by-play....THEY know what's up.......
I tend to be pretty focused on analyzing the context of art and the author's intent, so maybe that's why I find secondhand exposure via friends and their ocs to still feel very fulfilling. Whatever context I lack for the original text & its author, I'm sure to know a lot about the context in which my friend wrote the story, and what they intended by it, and I'm sure to find the way these things are conveyed within my friend's story to be interesting ^_^ art is so fun.

I just love the diverse range of opinions among Only Friends viewers .....
If there's one thing I find quite fascinating as an OFTS enjoyer, it's the varying opinions we have about the show's characters.
Every single character has both shooters as well as critics, and there's not a single opinion that unites us all. Why?
Take RayMew for instance, cause I've seen heated debates on both sides of this dynamic. Some argue that Mew is treading on thin ice by pursuing a relationship with Ray, knowing full well about his emotional volatility.
On the flip side, there are staunch defenders of Mew who insist that he's vulnerable, having been betrayed and cheated on, and Ray is capitalizing on that (just like Boston implied)! The opinions here are a muddied mess, much like the characters' feelings.
Then, there's Nick and Boston. I mean, most viewers find themselves sympathizing with Nick and harboring a deep dislike for Boston for obvious reasons.
But a good number of them also admit that Nick was wrong to record Boston without consent, and Boston has always been transparent about his feelings toward Nick.
Sand, who is mostly loved by all, isn't immune to scrutiny either. While many of us adore him, we can't deny his imperfections.
It's this multi-dimensional nature of the characters that makes discussing this show so exhilarating.
There are no definitive right or wrong takes when it comes to these characters; it's all about perspective.
It's about slipping into their shoes, understanding why they make the choices they do, and then looking at it from another character's standpoint, and understanding why they are criticized.
It's the realism that I enjoy so much. In the real world, most people aren't simply categorized as inherently good or evil; they're shaped by their experiences and personalities.
We all have those people in our lives who staunchly stand by us, no matter what, and those who will never understand us. The characters of Only Friends embody this human complexity to the fullest.
None of them are perfect, and that's precisely why we're drawn to them. They're beautifully flawed, just like real people.
What makes it so captivating for me isn't just following the story in the show. It's also diving into character discussions, hearing a spectrum of fan opinions, and embracing the diversity of viewpoints.
Personally, I appreciate both the criticisms and defenses for each character. It's this variety of perspectives that makes this show so fun to discuss.

hi jon, i was reading your post about nico rosberg being a divisive figure in f1 and first of all i wanted to say it was so perfectly written i would read an essay of yours but it also reminded me of the similarities with motogp. (i'm assuming you don't follow it)
casey stoner has had a similar experience to nico rosberg, the year he retired (2012) he finished 3rd in the championship and they year before he had won so to many he is a 'what could have been' even though he is a double motogp world champion (2007 & 2011). years later he finally revelead that he was struggling with chronic fatigue (!!!can you imagine riding in the highest category of your sport with chronic fatigue??) and also depression and anxiety. he said that his depression was worse after the weekends he went well for fear of disappointing his team afterwards. so it truly was either his career or his life
also they way you categorized the dead drivers has mythological characters people romanticize really spoke to me. in the 'patroclus' category i would put marco simoncelli. i have compared him to jules bianchi multiple times to explain it. he passed away in 2011 after a crash in sepang. valentino rossi was also involved in the collision. him and vale were really good friends and he has said that marco's death had influenced the decision to create an academy to help young italian riders (cause he had been helping marco) and has called marco the 'first student of the academy'. valentino's academy has had amazing results, this year world champion pecco bagnaia is an academy boy and so is marco bezzecchi third in the championship. he has 4 riders in motogp !!(pecco bagnaia, marco bezzecchi, luca marini, franco morbidelli). simoncelli's dad paolo has created his own team to rember his son (sic58 squadra corse -> sic was his nickname and 58 his number) creating new opportunities for riders. so they're honoring him and keeping his legacy alive the same way charles is doing at ferrari for jules and his dad.
sorry for the rant and sorry if there's any mistakes english is my second language, i'm was just really fascinated by the way you explained the narratives
thanks for the ask! your english is perfect.
i don’t watch motogp at the moment but i really should. one of my partners and two of my cousins are very into motorcycles and love it. like it clearly has the same capacity for grand narratives as f1 does and i am all about those grand narratives.
i think lots of sports fans (especially very masculine cis het men who are into sports for masculine cis het men reasons) like to view sports as a scientific pursuit, as more deserving of their time and attention than art because it can somehow be objectively quantified. and really that’s not true - yes there is a lot of data and numbers, but we invent the terms of the game just as much as we invent the themes of art. and even then people will throw away those numbers in a heartbeat to defend the narratives they have attached themselves to (see everyone repeatedly insisting senna is the greatest f1 driver of all time when no metric we’ve used to quantify racing data will testify to that being true).
people become most upset when their narrative expectations are denied. this isn’t an “oh the villain won” issue - that’s a tragedy, but tragedy still gives us catharsis, we get our emotional pay off, it still fits into narrative archetypes. no, it’s when people like nico rosberg and casey stoner pack up and go home and reveal the artifice of that narrative. imagine if the actor playing hamlet got up in the middle of the to be or not to be soliloquy, wiped off his makeup, got out of his costume and left via the fire exit.
(side note - the original film of jesus christ superstar pulls this off incredibly. in the final scene, you see all the actors, bar the one playing jesus, out of costume, boarding a bus to leave the set, leaving us asking ourselves a bunch of uncomfortable questions about viewing the crucifixion for entertainment).

All TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s Taehyun Needs Are His Bandmates and MOA
Tumblr media
"Nothing can compare to the happiness I feel on stage,” he says
If you’d asked Taehyun last year how he’d describe his relationship with his TOMORROW X TOGETHER bandmates, he probably would have referred to them as family. These days, though, he’s found a new way to categorize Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, and Hueningkai.
“The phrase ‘team members’ is more precious to me right now,” he tells Consequence, seated for a one-on-one interview in Osaka, Japan. “It’s special itself.”
Considering the sheer amount of time the five members of TOMORROW X TOGETHER spend together, being as close as family would make sense — but to be a successful team requires a different kind of commitment.
Although Taehyun is the second-youngest member of TXT, there’s a singular air of maturity about him. When in the room with his bandmates for a group interview, he’s able to track who is ready to answer a question with just one glance out of the corner of his eye — and, if he gets the sense that no one else has the desire to do so, he’s able to jump in. Throughout the days spent with TXT’s camp, there’s not a moment where Taehyun isn’t engaged with the people around him, whether it’s rehearsing introductory and closing comments, navigating lighting cues at the arena, or making the most of the interviews.
TXT’s team dynamic is strong, but there’s still plenty of room for the members to explore and express their individuality. Quick-witted and thoughtful, Taehyun is also a superb performer, standing out with his athletic dancing and particular vocal gifts (look no further than the bridge of “Opening Sequence” for proof). When asked how he’d like to be described, Taehyun uses the phrase “never before seen character.” He wants to be unique; he wants to walk his own path — one he hopes will one day bring him to Switzerland to spend some downtime in the mountains.
Tumblr media
He talks fondly about his close circle of friends, most of whom don’t work in entertainment, but who have been in his life long enough that he doesn’t need to explain the nuances of his unique job to them. He recalls showing them the poster for Lollapalooza (where TXT are headlining this upcoming July) and seeing his band’s name in the same size font as the artists they listen to while taking long drives.
“I don’t think there was a year that we performed as much as we did last year,” he says of 2022, which included TXT’s first appearance at the annual Chicago festival. “I learned that I really love performing, and that I’m really serious about performing — and the next thing I learned is that I’m loved by so many people.” MOA, TXT’s dedicated, global fanbase, have certainly underscored that latter point over the years.
“I think something joyful happens once a day,” Taehyun observes. Like his bandmates, Taehyun explains that he tries to soak up all the love they receive from their fans and reflect it back in the moments they’re together during concerts. “Since I’m in a very special line of work, nothing can compare to the happiness I feel on stage,” he says.
The group’s ongoing “ACT: SWEET MIRAGE” tour (tickets available here) is a longer show than many others out there; like most K-pop concerts, there is no opener on the bill, and the guys are onstage for nearly three hours, doing all the heavy lifting themselves. The work required to pull it off extends far beyond the time spent with the audience. “We have to do photo shoots, a lot of meetings, and things before and after the performances,” Taehyun shares. “But on stage, no one can tell me to do other things. It’s just me, the members, and MOA.”
The group got their sea legs last year during the “ACT: LOVE SICK” tour, their first trek outside of South Korea post-pandemic, and Taehyun thinks that this year sees the members having more fun onstage than ever. Yes, the stamina required to pull off a show like theirs is demanding, but as the guys have continued to hone their performance skills, they’ve also continued to grow that much more comfortable in front of crowds. Taehyun shouts out the group’s 2023 track “Tinnitus (Wanna be a rock)” as one of his favorite parts of this latest outing, crediting the vibey new choreography as a highlight.
The nature of a creative is to always have one eye on the next project, and while MOAs wait to see what’s coming down the line from TXT, Taehyun offers some words of assurance: “We have nothing to fear as long as we have each other. As long as I have my four other members, I’m confident.”

thoughts on zodiac signs. maybe the chinese. whatever you prefer.
well what am i supposed to think about it. like. it’s a cultural staple. people love categorizing themselves based on cosmic phenomena. that’s like, what people do. one culture back in the electro-primordial age had an endless zodiac and that was pretty sick. i wasn’t a fan of anyone who was born under a desire decade. obviously. and tbh the dream decade people sucked ass too. death decade people were awesome though

Hyoma Chigiri and Y/N L/N, two seemingly disparate individuals traversing their own distinct realms of music and sports, are bound together by a shared reverence for beauty that extends far beyond the superficial. Theirs is a connection woven from the fabric of mutual admiration, founded upon a belief that the essence of beauty lies not solely in outward appearances but in the depth and intricacy of the human spirit.
In countless interviews, both Hyoma and Y/N have articulated a sentiment that resonates deeply within their souls: "Another person's beauty is not the absence of your own beauty." This profound philosophy serves as a guiding principle in their lives, affirming the inherent worth of each individual irrespective of societal standards or conventional norms.
Their admiration for one another's talents transcends mere professional appreciation; it permeates every aspect of their lives. Y/N often finds herself enraptured by the fluidity of Hyoma's movements on the football field, his game highlights serving as a captivating backdrop to her daily routines. Similarly, Hyoma immerses himself in the ethereal melodies of Y/N's music, her soulful voice providing a comforting resonance amidst the chaos of his training sessions and daily rituals.
Yet, their fascination extends beyond the confines of their respective crafts. Hyoma finds himself drawn to Y/N's interviews, captivated by her genuine warmth and unwavering commitment to her fans. Her authenticity leaves an indelible mark on his heart, while the rawness and depth of her speaking voice stir emotions within him that he never knew existed.
Conversely, Y/N is equally enchanted by Hyoma's presence both on and off the field. She watches with bated breath as he effortlessly commands attention in his interviews, his confidence and grace embodying the very essence of masculinity in her eyes. And when she listens to him speak, each word becomes a melody that resonates deep within her soul, igniting a passion that she can scarcely contain.
In the quiet moments of introspection, both Hyoma and Y/N find themselves grappling with emotions that defy categorization. They are drawn to each other with an intensity that transcends the boundaries of fame and fortune, their hearts yearning for a connection that transcends the limitations of their respective worlds.
As they navigate the complexities of life, they take solace in the knowledge that, in each other, they have found a kindred spirit – a soulmate whose beauty, both inside and out, mirrors their own. And though their paths may diverge, their connection remains steadfast, a testament to the enduring power of love and admiration in all its forms.

i have to say this somewhere because it's so adorable, but i was checking the compatibility between namjoon’s and the members' based on their charts and when i say each one was so strong, just felt so overpowered with joy because it's clear why they trusted him enough to take the lead, but more importantly, because it only serves to emphasize that he has that jen ne sais quoi that makes you fall in love, which is something that is uncommon in today's male culture (they're either taken or gay, and nobody can convince me differently lmao.)
while a lot of tarot readers think that he’s a scorpio rising, i firmly believe that he is a cancer rising, or at least that his rising is at a cancer degree. i only think that the scorpio rising theory is strong likely due to his scorpio stellium, thus making him a pluto dominant and why people just categorize him as a polarizing figure. but anyways, he has mentioned that he tends to gain weight easily in his face the most when he eats but what really stands out is his empathy and articulation of his emotions — to me, he’s like a poet because of the way he can express his emotions and put that shit on paper. like, i find it so inspiring because not many people these days are able to express themselves in such a gentle yet firm way (his way with words makes my mercury and venus placements fucking swoon like pls don’t get me started on that man’s voice oh my gosh).
in any case, it makes me feel better since i believe he has endured a bit more bullying than the others. if he is a cancer rising, his lilith would be in the eleventh house, which makes sense because eleventh house liliths are frequently portrayed as the scapegoat in any group context —exactly what we see consistently happening to him in the kpop twitter sphere. anywho, i am so sorry the lengthy post but i was just really moved to share my thoughts because i think it’s so unfair and unkind when people pick on others without any reason. this brings me to my next point: i also want to add that i hope you’re okay and i am sending you so much love. i sincerely hope you get the chance to learn more about your birth chart —truly makes a difference! also you being a virgo rising 🤤 my affinity for virgo placements clearly still going strong because i love creeping on your page lol (and you’re a leo sun 🥹 i absolutely adore you because same). anywho, thank you for reading! 🫂🫧
(i guess i could ask to do a check in on him? and how’s feeling if you don’t mind but please do not feel any pressure to do so!)
Hey there! Since you started about namjoon I have been so overjoyed because I see nothing about him in the BTS community most of the time and I don't receive any ask for him but you asked and reminded me I will do a reading on his current energy checking. Maybe even his personality..but thanks for reminding me.
Now about him, I absolutely adore him. If I were to ask if I will ever have a crush on any BTS member it would definitely be him. He is totally my type. I just adore adore adore him. When I first saw him in the Dynamite song which I believe was my first time seeing any song by Bts I was immediately drawn to him. He has this strong authoritative aura that you can not ignore. He is a softie from the inside. Every time I see him I see a small child looking here and there for something...finding something. I really don't understand the amount of hate he gets just for being him. Recently i saw a post of him being at an event with Karina i guess and the comments from other K-pop fans were wild....I mean it is ridiculous. Some even went so far as to say he is the ugliest person to walk on the red carpet that night...hello???? are you guys blind or what? He is Kim Namjoon...the leader of the biggest boyband in the world, he is the Main Event. But I am happy for him because with time he has learned to get go and is healing himself. Antis just wait for him after his Military discharge. You will see who he is lol.
And I am doing absolutely okay, thanks for asking. It made me feel like a celebrity lol for some time and I enjoyed it. I have never heard saying anything about my chart before that they love it lol before I told you guys. I am trying to learn about my chart but Astrology is not my cup of tea egven though I have been interested in it ever since I was a child but couldn't learn it..guess I am just dumb?
