"hot" take: stop monetizing your children. don't put your disabled/chronically ill/mentally ill child on the internet. advocate don't demonstrate. your autistic child shouldn't ever have the pressure of being an inspiration put on them, let alone when they're nine. your newborn baby doesn't deserve to have their life on display. your children should never have to cry for a camera. children are not tools for monetization. nobody that young can understand the repercussions being on the internet can garner. a young child's decision about their life cannot be considered well informed.
so yeah in case you were wondering how I feel about family vloggers I will personally fight each and every one of them.
"I don't think your kid is safe out here with the dogs."
"Well, I installed a fence so they can't get in and I gave them earbuds so they can't hear the growling."
"Just because they can't hear the growling doesn't mean it's not there."
"They're perfectly protected from the dogs."
"Installing a fence won't do much. I've seen dogs jump over the fence. They're on the edge of your yard, it wouldn't take much effort for them to jump."
"If dogs jump over the fence, why aren't they doing it right now? They're just watching them, they're not doing any harm."
"But they're growling and barking, can't you hear them?"
"Of course I can hear them, but it's just some barking. They aren't doing anything."
"Just because they aren't doing anything doesn't mean they won't."
The Sandwich Family Series started with one satirical TikTok about a kid in a Yoshi hat that was meant to highlight some of the privacy and safety concerns with family vlogging as an industry. It has evolved into an intricate, dystopian, suspenseful story about 7 siblings, each with their own role to play on the channel and in their family. Please enjoy this compilation of the first 21 parts of The Sandwich Family Series, presented to you in chronological order
An interesting and thought provoking article about the ethics of putting your children on social medias in an online environment that's increasingly scary. Is it exploitative or wrong to put them online when they can't consent? Does their privacy deserve protection from their own parents?
