Wunderkind
Author: Nikolai Grozni
304 pages, published 2011
Original language: English

Age: Teen - Adult
Blurb:
Fifteen-year-old Konstantin is a brash, brilliant pianist of exceptional sensitivity in the bleak and controlled environment of Sofia, Bulgaria, in the 1980s, struggling toward adulthood in a society where honest expression often comes at a terrible cost. Confined to the militaristic Music School for the Gifted for most of each day and a good part of the night, Konstantin exults in his small rebellions--smoking, drinking, and mocking Party pomp and cant at every opportunity. Through it all, Konstantin plays the piano with inflamed passion, transported by unparalleled explorations of Chopin, Debussy, and Bach, even as he is cursed by his teachers' numbing efforts at mind control.
Hypnotic and headlong, Wunderkind's dazzling portrait of youthful turmoil gives us a stunningly urgent, exquisitely observed, and wonderfully tragicomic glimpse behind the Iron Curtain at the very end of the Cold War while reminding us of the sometimes life-saving grace of great music.

My thoughts:
The chapters are all named after classical music pieces, so the background reading music is built in for you with this book.

I completely forgot Le Collège Noir was getting an animated adaptation, and oh my god this looks unimaginably cool.

Suzanne
Wild mare, ahead of the stampede,
Suzanne, cut through the aether's clean;
The golden girl must take the lead.
It's not a 'want', yours, it’s a 'need'
To reign the pace, like a machine;
Wild mare, ahead of the stampede.
Suzanne, advance, at top-speed;
A force like you has never been;
The golden girl must take the lead.
You shape yourself to supersede
Each limit posed, once deemed foreseen;
Wild mare, ahead of the stampede.
Suzanne, attack, excel; exceed
Your body punished taut and lean;
The golden girl must take the lead.
Abolish choice, you must succeed,
The roaring crowd must know who's queen;
Wild mare, ahead of the stampede,
The golden girl must take the lead.

Falling in love...falling under the influence...falling into temptation...falling ill...falling apart...falling from grace...Lucas has no idea there are so many painful ways to fall.
Through a long summer of oppressive heat and suspense, Lucas becomes aware of many things he does not understand. What can his Grandfather have done during the war to provoke such hostility in his own home town? Why is there growing crime and tension i the neighbourhood? What is his attitude to immigrants and refugees? How should he respond to his new friend, Benoit, whose arguments confuse and compel him, or to Caitlin, with her enigmatic ways and her beautiful, sad dancing? And how should he act when the crisis comes?
A deep, disturbing book about the inexorable influence of the past on the present, the seductive power of extreme nationalism and racism, the complexities of moral and political choice, and the gulf between intentions and consequences a haunting story of love, fear, anger and forgiveness.

My thoughts:
I’m not really sure how to tag this one. I will decide after reading.
This is a very award-winning book, and after taking a peek at the preview I can understand why. Wow, just wow - the beginning is very compelling and pulls you in and I want to understand what in the world happened. The translation from Dutch is excellent so far. I can’t wait to read it.
