I'm reading Pride and Protest by Nikki Payne, a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice and I'm struggling.

I actually find what Payne has done with the characters and setting really interesting and there are some touches I really like, especially turning Mary into Maurice - an "activist" who changes his activism regularly and lectures others on what they should be doing. (Any interpretation of Mary that isn't "misunderstood, shy, nerd girl who isn't-like-other-girls and is actually just like me, a misunderstood, shy, over-looked nerd girl" gets a positive vote from me.)

However, I really very much dislike her interpretation of Darcy (Dorsey) and Elizabeth (Liza)'s relationship and that is... kinda crucial!

It's waaaaaay over sexualised. Like, I get this is a romance book, but, like, I'm reading along enjoying the story and plot and then suddenly Dorsey is thinking about burying himself in Liza's breasts and I'm like "wooaah!" It's like it's impossible for the author to show them having feelings for each other without it being explicit and I find that out of place both with the source material and with the rest of the narrative.

Secondly, it is sexual... immediately. It commits the cardinal sin of saying "Darcy and Lizzy were hot for each other from the start and all the tension is ~ s e x u a l tension". The 2005 abomination does this too with the near kiss in the rain. And pretty much every single P&P inspired enemies-to-lovers narrative out there does it too. The problem is... this is a really, really inaccurate interpretation of the original book. Darcy is, admittedly, attracted to Elizabeth very quickly. Something that he manages to show not at all to anybody. Only Caroline Bingley, who is intensely interested in Darcy's romantic feelings, spots it. Later on, arch observer Charlotte and good friend Col Fitz also suspect something but by this point in Rosings Darcy has given into his feelings and is trying, albeit terribly, to court Elizabeth. Not that she notices. Darcy is completely able to conceal his sexual attraction to Elizabeth from everyone who isn't thinking about Darcy sexually. He is not quite so able to conceal his romantic interest later on. But crucially, at no point does Elizabeth notice a thing. She has LITERALLY NO IDEA. This is because Elizabeth has no concept of Darcy as a romantic prospect for her at all. She laughs at thinking what a good match he'd be for Anne de Bourgh, a probably sexless in appearance invalid. She doesn't hate him in a ~sexy~ way, she just really does not like him and does not consider him as a romantic option.

If Elizabeth is aware that Darcy has the hots for her, this changes the dynamic completely. If she is actually attracted to him in the first part of the story, that changes the dynamic completely. And both of these changes alter and potentially cheapen Elizabeth's character. If she is aware on some level that Darcy likes her and is interested in her, then she ends up looking like an idiot when the first proposal comes around. Or she ends up looking coy and like she is actually flirting with him. Yes, there is banter but Elizabeth is not consciously flirting or trying to attract him! Elizabeth spends the whole first part of the novel with a crush on Wickham. Austen is perfectly capable to showing to the audience without needing modern explicit language that a character has the hots for another character. Elizabeth fancies Wickham, not Darcy! As the meme goes, Darcy and Elizabeth are experiencing two very different kinds of tension! That's part of the comedy. And if Elizabeth is aware that she is attracted to Darcy, it just becomes a different story, and a less interesting one. Elizabeth becomes yet another romance novel heroine who likes the "bad boy" and tries to persuade herself not to, until the tension is sooooo strong and she ~snaps.

But one of the major points is that Elizabeth doesn't like bad boys! She falls for (well, crushes on) Wickham because she thinks he's good. She dislikes Darcy because she thinks he's bad. She only starts to consider Darcy positively when she understands and sees for herself the truth of his character. That is what she finds attractive, not him being a buttoned up jerk! "One has all the goodness, the other all the appearance of it." That is central to P&P's story and its message.

Unfortunately, in the aims of writing a "romance" novel, Pride and Protest gives us heaving busoms and erections and almost-kisses and therefore completely destroys my interest in Dorsey and Liza's relationship at the same time as well as finding it just a bit tasteless because it feels like there are two stories going on: an interesting exploration of how the context and characters of P&P would work in a highly politised and racially diverse modern USA - and a very generic romance novel story which doesn't do either Darcy and Elizabeth justice. A shame.

It does make me wonder about how to update Austen's novels in terms of sex. Because obviously one of the major changes between the 1810s and now is that having extra-marital sex is totally normal and people date and break up without social repercussions. So unless you are setting the update in a community where that is not the case, you've got to deal with sex being freely on offer. I guess there are different ways around it but I think if how you deal with sex means that the fundamental beats of the narrative and character development are changed, then something's gone wrong somehow. And I feel that Elizabeth's total obliviousness to Darcy having any positive feelings towards her at all until the moment he proposes to her is a crucial part of the plot and a source of unending humour.

Recent Austen adaptations yelling

Ok I DID make this blog to review historical-set Pride & Prejudice adaptations (with an exception made for iconic B&P). But for everyone who was DEFINITELY WONDERING, yes I have also been storing away a lot of opinions about other recent Austen adaptations that I Must Tell Someone.

Fire island (2022)

A modern gay party cheesy rom-com P&P that genuinely made me laugh. Having seen some other (whiter) cheesy gay romcoms that were extreeeemely PG & playing it safe, I was pleasantly surprised.

Also Bowen Yang and his story just came across really earnest in a way I was into - would watch this man cry again, 10/10.

Personally as an extremely disabled british nerd (now tragically unable to travel and/or go to the club...) this gay scene is a long way from my queer scene. But I still had emotions, you know?

Kinda wanted more of the Mary analogue and generally just normal looking people (almost everyone is so ripped) but I appreciate that's how beautiful smooth people often look in mainstream american films, we can't have everything.

DARCY WATCH: I do not want to dress like this adaptation's chinos Mr Darcy. But Conrad Ricamora was generally great and very hot and awkward and understood the assignment. Good ice cream throw.

Emma (2020)

I know I know, it's pretty... but I don't think that's enough!!!!!

Lovely production, beautiful costumes, a candy wes-anderson cinematography that really suits the story, and it's fun to notice references to actual outfits and prints from the time but lads. LADS. UNPOPULAR OPINION TIME: Where is the chemistry???

You can’t make Mr Knightley a nice sweet boy (so funny to have cast a posh folksy singing man) and leave the plot the same and expect it to work!! Also I was personally pissed off that a lot of the promo/ ads for this made it look like ~forbidden love~ when it's the 2 richest white people in town getting together?? ? There's actually not even a class difference in this one, guys.

Basically this romance was nothing to me!!! I felt nothing!!!!!!!! WHERE'S THE DEPTH

I did like the bit where he lies down though. Relatable.

Also why are you drawing so much attention to the servants when you don’t seem to have anything to say about class...? 'Wow look how many servants they had! Anyway, they don't get any speaking lines'... it's 2020 guys!!! like what are we saying here. 'isn't it cool to think about how people were rich'??

Persuasion (2022)

Weeping softly into a pillow........ did you know this version meant a version with Sarah Snook and Joel Fry got cancelled?? we could have had it all

(standing on a table yelling) THE MODERNISATION WAS NOT THE PROBLEM WITH THIS FILM!!!

Honestly I actively liked all the entire secondary cast in this. Louisa and Mary were extremely charming fun takes to watch. ('I'm an empath' IS right for the character if you're doing modern jokes!!!) And nobody can deny this was a correct and powerful use of Richard E Grant.

Henry Golding was naturally great. Apparently he got offered the lead and took the villain instead, which DOES mean the villain is super charming and fun to watch which is... hard to match and.... kind of shows up.... the main man.

It's been said before but the main two were WOEFUL imo. I have no beef with the actors I just question the DIRECTION and whether anyone making this knew (or cared) why people... enjoy things.

Book Anne is the quietest gentlest loser and I LOVE HER and so does basically every Austen nerd. Making her a quirky wine-bath girl who's honestly just cruel sometimes fully stops the main romance chemistry and plot from working.

And it means the main boy is still like 'god I'm so horny for how KIND AND CAPABLE YOU ARE' which is just 100% no longer true. You can't transplant a personality in a romance but leave the plot the exact same and expect it to work. The chemistry IS the plot in a romance..........

you can't act morally superior to your siblings and still rate people out of ten.... also so funny to me that everyone else gets period outfits and hair whereas this protagonist looks like she just glanced at a picture of any time in the past and grabbed a couple shirts from primark. it doen't even look good or build character!!!!!

Anyway, not to be an elderly man like 'ohhh why does nobody care about character these days' but the reason something like Clueless works is because it has the heart of the story right, instead of just copying the surface level stuff.

Leon Kennedy headcanons: Romantic Relationships

Reposting because tumblr ate it. Based on RE4 Remake Leon.

I said in a previous post that RE4 Remake Leon reminded me a little of Mr. Darcy. With his crush, he’d be more quiet than usual. Unsure of how to act on feelings (or if he should) and worried how his crush would react. Being slightly curt with his crush. Trying to sneak some stares and looking away just as he’s about to get caught. They would be certain that he dislikes them, when he’s really just nervous. They would never guess he had a crush on them  because he’d seem so distant. But he would do some nice things behind the scenes. Overhear you saying you need to buy some trivial thing, you come back the next day and it’s on your desk. Stiffly suggests going out together, but just casually, of course. It’s not like he likes you or anything. Puts on a serious face and asks if you’d like to get coffee:

This is exactly the face he makes when he asks. This is a very serious situation. “Coffee. Would you join me for some?”

(RE2 Leon would have handled it differently. Still shy and awkward, but definitely less businesslike. More prone to blushing and chuckling nervously. “I was..um...wondering if you’d like to get some coffee. Sometime. Anytime-uh..”)

Now I think this cold/distant approach I’m describing is something that happens if Leon is actually romantically interested in someone. If he’s just looking to fuck he’s more suave and flirtatious. So if he has a one-night stand that turns into something more, his partner is going to be in a very awkward situation while he figures his shit out. He doesn’t seem like a romantic person, but the want for romance is definitely there. He’s just very pragmatic and task oriented. But in his heart of hearts, he wants something deep and intimate; a melding of two souls. He just doesn’t really indulge in those feelings because he thinks it won’t happen for him.

If someone gives him a very heartfelt and sincere compliment, he doesn’t really know what to do. He gets flustered internally and it doesn’t compute. Just kind of goes blank. That, or he laughs it off. Did they really just say that? Do I need to get my hearing checked? When pursuing women, he’s definitely got an urge to be gentlemanly. It can come off as a little traditional. He’s definitely egalitarian in his beliefs, he just falls back on convention with dating, ie: paying for dinner, giving his date his coat if she gets cold, etc. When pursuing men, that’s where he’s out of his element. In my headcanon, Leon didn’t accept he was into men until he was an adult. With women, he falls back on the conventions of dating, but with men, he has to rethink it. Do we split the bill? Do I pay? Does he pay? It’s easier for men to make him blush as well. When pursuing enbys, he’d be more careful and anxious. He’d probably still unconsciously take up a masculine role, but he’d ask a lot more about how they’d prefer he act. He doesn’t want them to be uncomfortable around him. Pays careful attention to how they want to present one day to the next if they’re fluid. (God damn it I want a fic of Leon finding out his crush is non-binary lol) Leon might take a little time learning to work with neurodivergent partners, but once he learns what they need, he’s very patient, understanding, and attentive to their needs. (sidenote: I adore autistic Leon headcanons)

Ends up dating normie women a lot, but has a soft spot for alternative   women/men/enbys. They tend to enjoy the same music as him so he likes that. I get this feeling from Remake Leon specifically. I feel like OG Leon wouldn’t be interested in alt people that much.

Artistic types are foreign but intriguing to him because he doesn’t have a creative bone in his body. It would be so funny to see him getting with an academic nerd type? “I don’t care for this architecture. Who pairs Corinthian columns with Ogival arches?” “Yeah babe, it’s terrible.” (has no idea what they’re talking about) “Whoever is responsible must pay for this assault on my senses.” “I’ll get on that.” (sarcasm) He’s drawn to people who are intelligent and compassionate. People who are mature and capable of deeper discussion. Likes people he can learn from. Also a plus if someone can defend themselves or is willing to learn to. He doesn’t want to worry about their safety. It’s one of the main reasons he doesn’t look for a partner (for now...I’m sure there’s a breaking point. A dark sense of humor is also appreciated, though he typically makes sure to be sensitive with serious subjects himself. If you can get him to do a double take with a dark joke, he’s going to remember you. End: feel free to give feedback!

I'm still processing this surprise and it's like - I have a lot of thoughts but they're all "ghjkfdfvgbhjkgfdsdfg" so I have no idea how to make sense of "dfghjkjhgfdvbnm" and a lot of pillow-screaming. Instead, I wrote a drabble!

“She means you.” Ruby whispered to Nora.

“Hey, I am perfectly deserving of the plaque.”

“You have been competing for the plaque since the plaque was introduced.” Luke wielded his power of statistics. “And have won like a lot of times already, sit down.”

“It was three times, man. You had a five-quarter streak three years ago.”

“C’mon, go easy on him.” Ruby insisted.

“As if you didn’t get the award like fifteen times already.” Luke countered. “I am very proud of you by the way, but seriously babe. You earned boss’s favor ever since you cracked the Darcy Lever and the Sunlight Films conspiracy from thumb prints across beer glasses.” 

“It was a slow year for you, Nora.” Mafalda supplied, quickly subverting the topic. “Perhaps the award should go to, erm-,” - she scanned the room, “- the point is, everyone did well.”

“Are you saying my progress matters less because I happened to take care of myself much more in the last quarter leading up to today, and didn’t spend all that time worrying about work in a society that deems itself pro-hustle at the cost of everyone’s mental health?”

“Are you really playing the but-it’s-my-birthday card right now?” Mafalda crossed her arms, eyebrows raised.

“Hey, everyone enjoyed the burger combos on me, didn’t you all?”

Everyone turned their attention to Trystan who had his feet propped up on Nora’s desk, indulging in his first (that they knew of) greasy food exploit. “Mm” - he mumbled, taking quick bites of his cheeseburger. “Thish is one of the besh burgers I have ever had. We had a branch in Drakkos that closed ten years ago.” - he licked the sauce off his fingers before staring at the others who were staring at him. “What?”

“Just because it is your birthday that doesn’t mean you’re getting the plaque.” Ruby reasoned. “Right Mafalda?”

“I hate this.” she responded.

“See? Boss sees reason.”

“But c’mon -- it’s -- what is one more quarter? I just made a place for it on my wall.”

“Look, we all did really well these months.” Luke played the mediator. “Ruby’s faster forensic processing saved us a lot of time. I updated all of our databases so any new information is constantly added to pre-set dossiers. Nora’s gotten pretty good at -- filing, I guess and Trystan’s--”

“What? I did stuff. I did the--” Trystan snapped his fingers, trying to recollect something. “-- the thing.”

“You’re not being helpful.” Nora said.

“Good. I would hate to be of any help.” Trystan tossed a stray French fry in the air and caught it with his teeth. “The whole point of working as a private detective--”

“Consultant.”

“And a consultant-- is that it is independent of the trivialities of a cubical-shaped office. No Employee of the Month, none of that.”

“You have never worked in an office.” Luke added quietly.

“The point is- they matter very less to me. I am all about the work. And the fun.” he tossed another fry into the air and caught it at the nick of time. “Mostly just the fun. All right, maybe it is all about the fun.”

“Too bad because the award would have gone to you.” 

A chorus of “What?”s erupted. Mafalda picked up the Best Detective/Genius Award from its permanent (now temporary) place on Nora’s desk and handed it over to him. The term was, well, outdated. They couldn’t have “Employee of the Month” considering everyone had unique job titles and it would be weird to equate forensic processing with on-foot investigations. The only thing they could somewhat compare was everyone’s role in a case and how much they were able to contribute towards faster getting-through-the-stack-of-files.

“Oh I love this!” Trystan read the plaque. 

“This doesn’t--” Nora started to protest, but quickly withdrew it. “I suppose he deserves it.”

“Not cool, boss, not cool at all.” Luke heckled. “It doesn’t make sense, how-”

“It makes perfect sense to me, Luke. Trystan has learned a lot in his time here, he has used his resources for the good of the job, he is a valuable person on the team - on many occasions risking his life especially with his status as a celebrity-- and well-” Mafalda shrugged. “He is good at what he does. It makes sense to encourage a new team player. And I would insist Nora to give it out. Pass on the plaque from the former winner to the current winner. Ensures teamsmanship in the -- I’m sorry, my Lia just started soccer-- the point is, before I go off on a tangent, please uh, clap. Thank you. Do not make me do this again.”

Except instead of the room erupting with scattered applause, confused murmurs and Luke’s rebuttals just after he had proclaimed everyone was deserving of the award, Trystan pulled open the music app to look up ‘royalty free award music’ and hit play. 

“No-- no you are not making it into a thing.”

“I am definitely making it into a thing.” Trystan threw Nora a smirk and unfolded a cardboard crown that the kind people at the burger place had given along with the food. When everyone threw him perplexed looks, he shrugged, “Only coronation I’d get to take part in my life.” and tossed his phone at Mafalda. “Take a picture for me?”

“No.”

“Please, boss?"

She didn't object further.

A good solid ten minutes went by with them figuring out the correct pose. Trystan wanted Nora to pose as if she’s handing him the plaque. Then he decided he no longer wanted a picture and insisted his boss press record instead. A few minutes went by because Mafalda had accidentally clicked on slo-mo and they had to rectify that and ensure the filters were all set right.

They also had to get the lighting correctly, so Ruby had to stand holding the curtain up at a certain angle so the natural sunlight could hit their faces right. Luke was tasked with fishing a coronation mantle out of the box of costumes in the back of the closet, but was only successful at finding a red bedsheet and a fur wrap-around, so that’d have to do.

Fifteen minutes later, with the royalty free coronation music playing its tenth loop, pictures were taken.

“You know what? I am amending it. Trystan shares the prize with Nora.” Mafalda decided out of the blue, because she loved being an agent of chaos like that.

Another chorus of ‘What? What?” ensued. A plot twist? An amendment to the sacred employee code? Can Mafalda (even though she is literally the boss) do that? Is she for real? Luke blamed what he called the ‘birthday bias’. He never got to share the medallion with Ruby on his birthday. It wasn’t fair. 

Ruby gave up on the lighting and was arguing with Mafalda over Nora’s five-win sweep. There were shouts to scrap the policy entirely. Some (Nora) argued on behalf of all the present January-born 33-year olds. Some (also Nora) advocated for the inherent sanctity of the all-or-nothing policy behind the ‘Best Detective/Genius’ award - “either one person gets it or nobody gets it! We are not doing halves!”

Forty five minutes later after fervent arguing, with Trystan’s phone charging in the background thanks to the battery draining after playing the royalty anthem a hundred times, the five of them were able to calm down and think rationally. 

Clearly Nora deserved the award as much as Trystan did - it was a slow, but rough year for both of them - and well, it was mostly just an incentive to get at least half the people to agree on something and piss the other half off, instead of going 25-75.

 Mafalda hated divide-and-conquer as much as the next guy, but hey, you could only turn thirty-three once.

You, you are like a breeze of fresh air! When you flutter your hair, all the boys stare. The girls want to look as good as you, your fashion sense is outstanding.

You walk the hallways with your hips swaying with a small, smile on your face. People shake when talking to you, especially if they aren’t in your group of other popular kids.

Peter Parker, just an ordinary kid from Queens, total cash out with school. He spends his time diving into books, studying all what is needed, only talking to a couple of people, his friends. Very clumsy, most people think that Peter is annoying but.. he is the one catch your eye.

He is so quiet for a nerd, where other guys talk for ages to you about shit your not interested in. You heard Peter only a couple of times, talking to his friends about science and you found it adorable.

However, popularity won’t let you get close to him, you never talked to the guy. You wish you could because he seemed like a good friend, rather than your douche ones.

Saturday night, your at a party. Dancing and drinking with those so called, douche friends.

“I’m bored, there isn’t anything to do,” Darcy wined, “Go get a hot guy to hook with then, your dumb enough to just stand here!” Olivia rolled her eyes, taking another sip of her beer from the red cup.

“Quit, your whining! You sound like a dead raccoon,” she said harshly to Darcy, gritting her teeth as she grabbed her shoulder, “I’ve got an idea,”

“What is..”

“Y/N is over there, let’s walk to her,” Olivia shushed her, Darcy nodded, following her.

“Hey, Y/N,” Olivia and Darcy greets you, sipping their own drink, “Oh, hi,” you acknowledged. 

“I’ve got this cool idea,” Olivia explains, Darcy nodding rapidly as she is slightly, drunk.

“What could that entail?” You mentally rolled your eyes, you only come to these parties because of those two. Always dragging you along, you would rather be under your covers with a book.

“See that nerd over there,” Olivia smirks, pointing her finger in Peter’s direction, “Yh, what about him?” You slowly, asked confused.

“Let’s make a bet!” She grins, “I bet you, you can’t make him your boyfriend,” trying to get a reaction out of you, knowing that you secretly like the guy.

“Pfft, of course I can! You really think I can’t?” You raised an eyebrow, “I don’t know, however you can show me and you got 3 months to do it,” Olivia whispers into your ear, smirking seeing that your taking the bait.

“Fine, I’ll play in this stupid bet of yours, only if I get to be the leader of the cheer team,” It’s now your turn to smirk as Olivia narrows her eyes, “Don’t be an arse, Olivia! You made up the bet, backing on a bet are we?” You whisper, playing at her own game.

Darcy in the background just clueless at your little games of rivalry as she sips on her drink. Grinning at the both of you to encourage something that she don’t understand.

“No, as if, I wouldn’t be caught dead backing out,” Olivia smirks, “A deal is a deal but if you can’t then it be the worse day of your life,” she dusts her hands and then holding it out for you, “Deal,” You shook on it.

“adios amigo,” You waved, sarcastically at Olivia as you turn to walk to Peter Parker. 

“Look at her,” Olivia cackles, “Thinking little miss posh can out bet me!” Darcy nods, “She better think again,” determined that you won’t succeed this bet. 

“I’m not quite sure,” Darcy told her, looking at your direction, “Uh,” Olivia shook her head, “come on, we are getting another drink,”

“But mine isn’t empty,” Darcy whines, Olivia smirks, knocking it out of her hands, “Now it is!” Taking Darcy’s hand to the drinks.

“Hi Peter,” You take a deep breathe, waiting for him to acknowledge your presence, “Oh hey, Y/N,” he nervously smiles, finding it strange on how you never had talked to him before.

Peter knew you because of being in classes plus your quite popular around school. Flash had a massive crush on you, I mean who wouldn’t? Your a great looking girl, not to mention Smart and collected.

“Wanna grab a drink with me?” You asked, smiling at him. You caught him at a good time, alone since his friends, MJ and Ned just left due to other things.

“Sure, that would be great,” You nod, taking Peter’s hand leading him outside the party to walk to a little corner shop.

Peter is at this point a blushing mess, can’t form a word. How adorable, you thought.

“Here,” You say, taking the drink out of Peter’s hands, “I’ll pay,”

“Thanks,” Peter smiles, you give him his drink, “No problem, babe,”

Babe.. that’s new in the span of 15 minutes, Peter thought. But he liked it.

“I wanted to ask you something,” You gulped, stopping and taking his hand into yours as Peter letted you, “Go on..” he encourages you.

“I’ve really like you, since we been sharing science class together,” You confess, hoping he felt the same way.

“Oh what?” Peter shocked, “Really?” He scratches the back of his neck, nervously. 

“Yh, I wouldn’t be telling you! If I didn’t,” You reassured him, Peter didn’t have any words but you decide to play bold.

Cupping his jaw into your hand, you kiss his pretty, thin lips.

“You taste, good,” Peter finally spoke, “You too, Parker,” you winked.

Peter quickly, collected himself. Now, he is the one to take your hand as you guys walk down the street. 

“I actually like you too,” Peter smiles, “Will you be my boyfriend?” You giggle.

“Hey, shouldn’t I be the one? Asking that,”

“You took too long, Parker, is that a yes or no,” You tease.

“Obviously, a yes,” Peter reassures you by smashing his lips against yours in the middle of the cold, street late at night.

You feel safe anywhere, with him.

Now a couple of months into your relationship, your happy to see his personality blossom. Getting to know each other, you haven’t really spent that much time with your “friends” if you would call them that.

You completely forgot that this whole thing, as to why? You came close to Peter and managing to confess to him. Don’t get you wrong.. your feelings for Peter are real.

It’s just would you come even close to asking him out or at the most confessing? Most likely, not without the bet to edge you towards Peter.

You felt bad of not telling Peter, however Olivia had a few more tricks up her sleeve. As she was jealous of you guys getting along, for her own entertainment, she would ruin it.

“Hi Peter,” Olivia stopped Peter in the hallway, “Have we met?” He asked confused, to be honest you haven’t spoken much of you having friends in this school.

“I’m Y/N’s friend,” she smirks, “I see that your going out with her, that’s great and all but..”

“But what?” Peter asks confused, again seeing that she stops dramatically.

“I haven’t got time for this! I really need to get to class,” Peter shakes his head, trying to move out of the way, “Wait! Peter, you really should know that, Y/N lied to you,”

“What?” Peter shook his head, “She wouldn’t of done that,”

You see Olivia and Peter talking, your stomach dropped as you came closer to them.

“Me and her made a bet, seeing if she could ask you out,” Olivia smirks, knowing that your right behind hearing the conversation.

“Oh hey, Y/N,” she turns to you.

“What!” Peter whispers in shock, tears flooding to his eyes, “Peter, I’m sorry,” You yell as he looks at you one last time running down the hall to his class.

“You are a sly, Bitch! Olivia,” You scoffed, “I’m done being friends with you, full stop,” you walk away.

“That’s ok, you don’t deserve people like me,” she scoffs backs, “You won’t ever be on the cheer team, again!”

You take a middle finger to her as you sigh, going to your class.

It’s been a week since Peter found out that he was technically, a bet. Even though, your feeling for him are deeply, true. You had a pain your heart, knowing that nothing will ever be the same without him.

You knew you had to try to at least explain yourself, that’s why you popped a note into his locker. Hoping he will consider meeting up with you.

Peter read the note of meeting you, he sighs.. Really should give her a chance, considering I have got feelings for the girl, he thought.

“Hey, Peter,” You give him sorrow eyes, sighing, “Hi,” Peter gave a tight smile to you.

“I’m so sorry, what I did,” You confess, “I made a huge mistake of making that bet,”

“Yh, well, was you going to tell me of this bet?” Peter scoffs, upset that you have took the piss out of him.

“I don’t actually know,” You mumble, “I was considering it because I hated not telling you the truth,”

Peter nodded, “You should of came clean from the start,” going to walk away.. forgetting about his intentions.

“Wait, I still like you for you, Peter!” You shout, Peter looked up smiling, walking to you.. the weather started to drip, heavy as Peter took your face into a delightful kiss.

“I like you for you too, Y/N,” Peter breathe out, “I can try to forgive you but it will take time,” he hugs you, you smile in shock that he ran to and kiss you first.

“Yh, I completely understand,”

Over the past few months, You and Peter start getting close again. Finding a much deeper meaning to love than ever before.

“Olivia,” Darcy shook her head, she saw Olivia crush her juice box against her locker, “You made a mess,”

“I don’t care, those pricks!” Olivia scoffed, “Attention everyone,” she makes a commotion as soon as she walks into the dinner hall.

Darcy furrowed her eyebrows at Olivia, as she watches her supposed friend, stand on the table to get everyone’s attention.

“What the fuck? Is she doing now,” You sigh, “Properly, giving herself some well deserved attention,” MJ sarcastically, announced with a poker face.

“Also liv.. I’m actually the captain of the cheer team,” You smirked, “Your off the team,” all the other girls, cheer “Whatever, you all disgust me anyway,” Olivia huffs walking out of the hall.

“Daddy, I need to move schools!” Olivia rolls her eyes seeing there is no signal, “Something fucking, reception,” she groans.

“We have a free period,” Ned mentions, “We could all go out for pizza?”

OH MY GOD I JUST REMEMBERED SOMETHING FROM WORK. So last week I stopped by the used book/Music Store because I wanted to see if they had any Donna Summer albums (they did!) and I also perused through the children’s books section cause they’re cheap and if I can find something fun for me and the babies at work for cheap then I’ll get it. And so I got a copy of The Monster at the End of This Book (a classic), Goodnight Mr Darcy (a pride and prejudice parody of Goodnight Moon which is HILARIOUS and the babies have enjoyed since I’ll do a silly accent for it) and I Am Mr Spock.

And so one of my two year olds Anna, like I know she is gonna be SUCH a nerd when she grows up. She retains information like CRAZY. Like genuinely she has such a good memory!!! And so I was reading the I Am Spock book to her, and I was like “and this is the planet Vulcan” and she latched onto the word Vulcan SO quickly. She said it like fifteen times and when I brought the books out the next day she runs over to me and shouts “VULCAN! WHERE VULCAN!!”

I have a few questions about Mirabel in Heartstopper AU.

What’s Mirabel’s friend group like?

How well does she get on with her sisters?

What character does she fit into? I’m assuming that as she isn’t part of the main four, she is Darcy or Tara or something.

What is her individual relationships with Camilo’s friends? Ignoring any bias over her not liking them because of Milo.

What she want to do after high school?

Is this too many questions?

No, not too many questions at all! I really enjoy answering them, send as many as you want!

Mirabel doesn’t have her own friend group. She did pre the start of the story but ended up drifting apart from them, due to thinking she was too babyish. Her friends all got very into the nights out, partying, drinking, smoking boyfriends/girlfriends, making out, makeup, skipping class, etc, and she didn’t. She doesn’t regret her decision at all. Though, she does sometimes wonder if she is holding herself back.

She has a good relationship with both her sisters here. Isabela is currently training out of town, so she only sees her a few times a year and they don’t feel the need to constantly message each other. Luisa, still at home, is very much Mirabel’s best friend, they are very close and will tell each other anything. They spend a lot of their free time together.

None of them fit into a specific character or storyline, I guess, so I don’t really have an answer. She is pretty similar to Tori.

Her individual relationships aren’t very developed with Camilo’s friend group - she has no desire to spend time with them, whether or not Camilo is present. They are his friends, not hers. They are also in the year above her; boys in one school, girls in the other is still at play though. She is only included because they all get the bus together and she can’t stop them from sitting with her.

She and Moana have spent the most time together, usually paired off as the only girls. Mirabel thinks she’s infuriating though. She and Hiro get along slightly better, similar nerd vibe maybe? She and Alberto haven’t made much of an impression on each other to really say for sure. It won’t be any different.

She doesn’t know what she wants to do after high school, beyond attend university and study history. Possibly work as an author or in a museum somewhere, but she doesn’t spend too much time thinking about it. She lives in denial about the future, it scares her.

a/n: so i had this idea where the reader was like a super book/poetry nerd whose into all the classics, jane austen, shakespeare etc. And i thought it would be cute to write something where her and steve are just like chilling on one of his days off and reading together! ahh it sounds so cute! I hope you guys like it!

“wait, wait so she’s not into Darcy at all?!”

Your boyfriend Steve Harrington spoke up from behind you. Currently you were sitting on the couch in Steves living room with your back to his chest with your copy of Jane Austen’s Pride and prejudice in your hands. You had just gotten to the point where Elizabeth Bennet rejects Mr. Darcy’s marriage proposal. Steve was reading over your shoulder, his head leaned against the side of yours, every so often placing kisses on your collar bone. While his eyes scanned the pages of one of your most favorite novels. His arm around your waist while his free hand played with your hair as you both enjoyed each other’s company on Steves only day off.

“I mean do you blame her? he seems very arrogant.” you point out. You rested the book on your knees which were propped up.

“Yeah but he’s rich.” Steve argued. “right? isn’t that what they’ve pointed out the past couple chapters?!”

“true, but she still doesn’t like how dishonorable he is towards others.” You point out.

Soon after you started dating you were worried Steve wouldn’t like you after finding out you enjoyed books more than anything. You had an obsession with books for as long as you could remember. They were there for you when you needed comfort the most. When your parents fought you would use books to escape and that was what helped you the most. That wasn’t the case though, Steve had made it very clear early on that he cared for you and nothing would change that.

Ever since you both got together it would be tradition for you both to hang out and read on his day off from working at the movie store downtown. You had already introduced him to a few of your favorites and he loved them almost as much as you did.

He never thought he’d like Shakespeare, he always dreaded it in school but you somehow convinced him that it wasn’t so bad. Much ado about nothing was his favorite always saying how Beatrice and Benedict reminded him of the both of you before you got together.

Like alot of people you thought Steve was this arrogant big shot who was the king of Hawkins high. It wasn’t until an incident regarding a bunch of Demodogs and a bus that you had gotten to know him for who he was. He was selfless, charming and an overall wonderful person. You had only started dating a year ago after you both lost your jobs at the mall and decided after pining over each other for so long.

“I guess you’re right, I mean he dose seem like an arrogant rich asshole.”

“You know what’s funny is, I used to have a crush on him when I was younger.” you admit sheepishly.

“Really?” Steve chuckles.

“Yeah I used to think he was hot, I think its the way Austen describes him, he was kinda my dream guy, that is.. until I met you.” your cheeks heat up profusely while you speak.

“awee babe, are you saying im your dream guy?”

“yeah..” you trail off sinking into your shirt like a turtle, a little embarrassed.

Steve than begins giving you kisses all over your head and face that he can reach. It has you giggling and smiling like a love sick fool. You were both so smitten with each other, it was so adorable.

“of course you are handsome.” you lean back to peck a kiss on his cheek. Now it was his turn to blush. You then get back into your positions and continue reading. After a few minutes of silence then Steve speaks up again.

“I am hotter than Mr. Darcy though right?”

“oh, definitely hotter than Mr. Darcy.” you assure.

he laughs.

⍤ : What does your muse’s voice sound like? Is it light? High pitched? Scratchy? Deep?

Their voice I imagine is very high and somewhat light, but incredibly raspy. I think they fall on the more feminine-side of androgynous but they've got a very unique sounding voice. I don't imagine they sound like... i don't know, they definitely don't sound like rainbow dash or jojo siwa or something, but if those two ever decided to calm down and speak like a dorky shy little book nerd, that probably wouldn't be too far off. Darcy also produces a larger amount of testosterone so their voice became androgynous on its own as they got older.

☕ : Does your muse prefer coffee or tea?

They are a black coffee person! But they wouldn't turn down a cup of tea either- anything warm and homemade is good in their eyes.

☂ : Does your muse like rain?

Very much so! They like most types of weather, though this really does depend though. If they are busy and have seek and destroy missions to get done- rain makes it a lot harder to get done, both because of the enviroments reactions (muddy, slippery, wet) but also because of the rot itself being water transferable. It's partially liquid, so.... its hard to contain all of it in the rain.

They love to sing, but their voice isn't great for it. It's just untrained though, I don't think they have a bad one, they've just never particularly worried about "making it good." They're fine singing off key, it's not something they think people should worry about.

to answer your question, yes, all of my ocs would help you explore your gender identity if you’re struggling with it ! going into more detail, the ones that could help you the most (off the top of my head) are morgan, jude, august, casey, percy, sorin, and salem ! morgan and jude both questioned their gender identity when they were younger so they have the most knowledge about things of the sort, and i say that jude is actually kind of somewhere on the agender scale, but he doesn’t really think about gender too much because it stresses him out. (morgan just does not care.) august is really supportive, and he just knows a lot about gender identity, and casey is really supportive as well !! some people have probably tried to pick on him before for being “girly” and “not acting like a man” and he doesn’t take shit from anybody. (for such a sweet face he really knows how to make you insecure). he’s never really thought about gender a lot before so he might be a bit confused at first but he really does try his best to be supportive, and he even researches more into it to be as helpful as possible !! percy’s a nerd. he knows like .. everything about everything. sorin has read books about gender, more specifically in different cultures, so he has quite a lot of knowledge on the topic. does his best to help you explore it. ,, and salems just salem.

now, elijah, ivan, laurence, and darci are also supportive, but don’t have that much knowledge on the topic. elijah is kinda a himbo, and he’s very confused, but he’s trying !! researches with casey but let’s him do most of the talking when it comes to helping you because he’s scared of looking dumb in front of you. ivan’s supportive but he doesn’t know a lot about gender. just never really thought of it until you brought it up. pulls all nighters gathering information to try and gain more knowledge of gender to try and help you explore it. laurence and darci never really thought about gender, but they do their best to try and help you explore it !
