— afab reader, fairy tale retelling (kinda), cursing, self–indulgent

in which: all fairy tales (apparently) happen in mondstadt.

Once upon a time, in the city of song and wind, a woman, not older than 30 and definitely not younger than 20, sighs at her desk frustratingly.

She drums her fingers over the paperwork. [Name] lifts her head to examine the beautiful girl in front of her – she has a crown perched on top of her combed hair (she’s definitely one of those princesses), she has skin white as the clouds outside (she wonders what her skincare routine is), and she has lips a stunning shade of red (where’d she get that lipstick?). Right now, said beautiful girl is sitting in front of [Name]’s desk, and has her fingers intertwined together in concern. Wow, even though her eyebrows are scrunched, she still looks pretty.

How unfair.

“So let me get this straight,” [Name] starts as she checks the details of the commission again, before turning back to the prettier girl. Yep. It’s definitely not the time for [Name] to deprecate herself. Definitely not the time to compare her haggard appearance over a ten. What’s important is that she doesn’t stutter or slur her words or else there will be miscommunications. She needs to be professional, after all. “You have a, uh, a friend—”

“A very, very nice friend—”

“Who’s stuck inside a lair—”

“Inside Stormterror’s Lair, no less—!”

“And I’ll have to save them through—”

“A kiss! A true love’s kiss,” The girl finishes for her, and [Name] narrows her eyelids. She’s supposed to do the talking here but unfortunately Miss Drop Dead Gorgeous won’t shut up. Well, understandable – the girl’s commission has been way overdue due to the endless commissions flooding their way. And yep, it’s definitely the reason why [Name]’s stressed 24/7. “And only you can save my friend. With a true love’s kiss!”

Of course, this is nothing new in [Name]’s field of work. She’s fought a crazy wolf dressed up as a grandma before, or even a powerful sorcerer over the custody of a lamp, so this may be a piece of cake. Though, she can’t help but think how familiar this is.

“Riiiiight,” She stamps the paper and shoves it to the left – where other messy folders and binders are scattered. There are still more commissions that she has to do, and it’s not going to be finished soon. Good archons. “What did you say your name was again?”

“Snow White,” the pretty girl answers, and now it’s all making sense. “Princess Snow White, and please, help my friend, please—”

She’s starting to wail. [Name] watches in astonishment when birds suddenly approach her. Are they comforting her? Wait, where did the rabbits even come from? Goats?! Turtles?!

“It’s been weeks now, and I–I’m worried! Please, oh please! Save my friend!”

“Alright, alright, alright! Please tell your squirrel pals to lay off my drawers!”

In this line of work, anything can be possible.

In Mondstadt, where literally every mythical creature resides, magic is abundant. There are a thousand tales waiting to be told, but also a thousand requests to be done.

[Name] didn’t plan on working in Ms. Lisa’s business. Even more so, she did not ask to be one of the heroic saviors; she doesn’t know what to feel anymore whenever she visits the taverns lately, when the majority of the drunk men chant the adventures of the Unparalleled Knight with the bards. At first, [Name] thought how nice the tunes were, until the lyrics slowly sank in and she realized that the song was all about her.

It was embarrassing.

But at least the pay is good – it’s enough to feed her Sweet Madames every night. Not to mention how she has connections now! Like Dorothy and her dog. Rapunzel and her strange chameleon. (Also, Rapunzel paints with the notorious Calx on Dragonspine. [Name] loves visiting their annual art exhibitions.)

And yet, she can’t help but admit how sometimes annoying the clients are. It’s their fate; they can control it, they can fight it, they can beat destiny up and write their own story. Why does [Name] have to be involved with their issues?

“It’s fun,” her boss, Ms. Lisa, had said one time, when she was sipping her usual cup of tea. There were books all over the floor and [Name] was in so much fear. She wouldn’t be coming home tonight like she had planned because she knew that Ms. Lisa would leave all the cleaning to her. “Aren’t you glad that you’re given a chance on venturing into the unknown with this job?”

[Name] was glad. But it was draining, when she couldn’t even take a fucking break.

“Cutie, you just need someone to accompany you. Or rather, you should acquire your own happily ever after soon!” Ms. Lisa winked, and sent her a finger gun, as if she was shooting bullets right through her heart. [Name] blocked it with a nearby book. “Though dearest Jean doesn’t recommend a significant other, I’ll be giving you a pass.”

[Name] doesn’t recommend having a “lover” either. It’s a waste of time, and it will definitely distract her. She appreciates Ms. Lisa’s treatment of her, but what she needs is a week off. Not… happily ever afters. They sound stupid, and even if [Name] wants to yell that she doesn’t believe in that junk, she can’t—because it’s literally everywhere.

Fucking princesses and princes and their extravagant weddings.

Anyway. Back to reality.

Right now on her right hand holds a piece of paper that she’s sure is perfumed (she wants to cough) and is so damn pink. This is supposed to be clues for the friend’s whereabouts but why does it look like a love letter?

According to Princess Snow White, a spell was cast onto her friend because he ate the apples her evil stepmom—who was disguised as a creepy old woman offering free fruits; the Case of the Poisonous Apple was insane—left on her cottage. [Name] rolls her eyes in exasperation, because of course this little bastard friend of Princess Snow White will eat those toxic apples.

(Those fucking lazy dwarves of hers didn’t even bother throwing it away after they got invited to her wedding and honeymoon. Like seriously though, who invites those mofos in your most intimate night or week with your husband???? Ew.)

My friend loves apples, so there’s no hesitation in munching them once sighted. Okay. So the friend has an apple obsession? Also, the perfume really, really hurts her nose.

And I do not know how my dearest friend got to Stormterror’s Lair, and [Name] doesn’t either, but hey, this is Mondstadt – things are not supposed to make sense due to the magic lingering in the air. Due to the magic lingering everywhere. Or even the happily ever after trend.

Also, does her friend even have a name? Why is the princess being fucking redundant? But my animal friends told me that they were informed by the winds that my friend is in there. So please, save my friend! Save my friend with a true love’s kiss!

True love’s kiss my ass, [Name] grimaces when she sees the kiss mark left on the paper, so she crumples it before hiding it in her pockets. There won’t be any kissing involved. Not gonna waste my first kiss for this.

Stormterror’s Lair being huge is an understatement. It’s freaking big. Though, she’s thanking the archons above (no matter how unjust they are), for finally blessing this location. There are no more storms anymore, so what’s left is just the peaceful soon–to–be–setting sun penetrating her skin. No one really comes here anymore, because who will even visit the ruins, when there’s a lot to explore in Mondstadt? Like digging up cursed treasures, fighting off evil wizards, and eating delicious meals cooked by a former frog.

Ah, Tiana. [Name] should definitely head to Good Hunter after this to devour some of her delectable beignets.

The wind will guide you if you ever get lost, [Name] recalls Princess Snow White’s advice, as she starts to trek the broken bridge that leads up to Decarabian’s Tower. Broken debris and splintered rocks are everywhere. The plants seeping through the cracks are full of life. It’s mother nature taking its course.

She adjusts the belt of her heavy armor.

[Name] thinks she got this. Despite being a human, Ms. Lisa still calls her extraordinary. She doesn’t have any magical powers, but she does have a huge headache due to sleep loss. And she’s still alive.

Ah. She can hear music being played already, and – oh.

Oh.

She halts in her tracks and bends down, meeting the gazes of the unknown creatures before her. If she’s not mistaken, these are anemo wind wisps, and man, she can’t understand a thing what they’re saying. All she knows is that they’re really lively, they’re all jumping up and down, as if excited to see her. Again, she can’t understand what they’re trying to convey because all she can hear are the tinkling of bells.

[Name] yelps when five? No, seven of them rush in front of her, and thankfully, with her fast reflexes, she manages to gather them meticulously in her arms.

Wow, they’re all soft and fluffy. It’ll be nice to have one (that is, if it’s allowed…?)

But her ears are ringing due to the continuous noises they’re emitting. The princess said that they may be able to aid her in this mission but she doesn’t speak wind wisp.

A wind wisp nuzzles with her finger affectionately. Adorable. And oh, it seems another wisp wants that too. And another, and ano–

“Hey, hey, calm down, everyone. I’m not going anywhere.” And surprisingly, they’re all obedient, because they all went quiet. Now there are pairs of dotted eyes staring at her soul, waiting for her to utter something. Great. The attention is all on me now. Also, it’s fascinating that they understand human language, considering that they listened to her. “Can you take me to the uh…”

Wait a minute, what is the role of the princess’ friend here anyway? Moreover, who even are they?

“To the uh… I don’t know, to the someone who’s in need of saving?”

Thankfully, they do. They all gleefully glide and pull each part of her body with their own little dark blue feet(?), and she wonders why they’re all so enthusiastic upon her arrival. It’s evident that they’re not strong enough to make her move, but she entertains them anyway by walking again. One wind wisp attempts to tug her by the sheath of her sword, but gives up in disappointment when it can’t lift it up.

[Name] suppresses an amused chuckle. She opens her palm, and said wind wisp sends her a closed eye smile after dropping its form on her hand. It doesn’t have any lips but it’s safe to assume that it’s smiling.

The trip to Decarabian’s Tower is a disaster.

At first, [Name] asks the wisps why they’re surrounding her figure, until she realizes that they’re all trying to carry her upwards. But it’s futile. Their wind powers aren’t enough, so after five minutes, the exhausted wisps rest in her satchel for a well–deserved break. They get tired easily, it seems.

“You did great, guys,” [Name] pats one of them, who just rubs itself more with her tender touch. Really affectionate beings, huh. She lets them be after a while and assesses the situation. The wisps were helping her get up, since the staircases are damaged.

[Name] thanks the wisps mentally, because that means that the friend is upstairs, since they’re all trying to lift her up there. She doesn’t have to find the friend anymore.

But… there are no damn fucking stairs, so how did aforementioned friend even get there?

As always, there are a lot of things in Mondstadt that don’t make sense.

Like the faint elemental energy engulfing this area.

[Name] considers stripping off her armor because it’ll hinder her ascension, but since she doesn’t have any superpowers or knowledge regarding spells for defense (damn you, fairy godmother), she has no choice but to still wear it as she climbs the walls of the tower.

She just hopes she’ll have enough stamina to reach the top.

And good archons, of course she does. Thank archons that she has mini supporters or else she’ll question her sanity for choosing the wrong decisions that has led her in this scenario.

When she lays on her stomach on its cold floors, [Name] observes the chamber while panting for air. Why the fuck does it reek of alcohol in here? It’s so gross!

But the wind wisps chirp in delight. [Name] watches them go and approach the gossamer curtains.

Oh, right. Here it is.

The climax.

[Name] gets up, dusts off the dirt she accumulated, and saunters close to the bed. She can discern the sleeping silhouette, and there are lulls of true love’s kiss entering through her ears.

She draws the curtains.

There’s a boy. There’s a beautiful, ethereal boy lying supine on the bed sleeping peacefully, with his hands attached to a bouquet of fresh cecilias placed on his chest. Which is strange, because they haven’t wilted even though it’s been weeks. Said boy’s chest heaves up and down as he breathes.

So the apple did indeed put him in a deep sleep.

[Name] inches closer to the boy. He has porcelain soft skin—it’s unblemished and flawless. It almost rivals the Princess Snow White’s.

There’s another cecilia on the left side of his hair. And he has ombre twin braids on each side of his head.

And he has too many bows on his outfit. The outfit looks comfortable enough, and it’s absolutely a Mondstadt clothing—the white ruffles on his button up shirt? Hah. Mondstadt.

Also hm. Shorts and stockings? [Name]’s never seen a male wear those before.

[Name]’s guessing that Princess Snow White’s friend must be a prince. The bows look high–priced…

[Name] inhales. She doesn’t mean to take a whiff, but he smells like petrichor. He smells like fresh flowers. But he also smells like wine.

Oh, the combination of those scents is fantastic—

Ah. Focus. Now let’s get this over with.

[Name] brushes her locks behind her ear, puts a leg on the mattress (making it to squeak), a hand beside the boy’s pillow, and slowly ducks her head down. The wind wisps start to squeal in anticipation, and giddiness, and

She pokes his cheek. Her finger dips from his squishy it is. “Wake up, it’s time to get up.” [Name] ignores the stunned stares of the wind wisps. She grunts and pokes his cheek again twice. “You’re not fooling me. Wake up, or I am going to smack you instead.”

A loud, mirthful giggle escapes from his throat, and [Name] resists the urge to click her tongue in irritation. Finally, the young man reveals his turquoise eyes, mesmerizing her for a second. Holy hell, why does everyone look so fucking nice in Mondstadt!? “Aww! Do not do that, please. Moreover, what gave it away?”

Breaking out of her dazed stupor, [Name] scowls at the smirk, “You were playing an instrument, weren’t you? I knew I wasn’t hearing things. It wasn't just the wisps, but it was you, too. And are you serious? There are lotsa bottles of wine on the floor. Who would even drink them? Unless, I don’t know? Maybe the one who’s pretending to snooze?” Then, she pokes his round cheek, again, making him snicker from the contact. “You also puckered your lips—hah! True love’s kiss? You ain’t getting that.”

“Eh! I was just playing the part! You’re not supposed to be acting like this—where are the declarations coming from your heart? You’re also supposed to sweep me off my feet, rescue me from the dragon, and take me to my happily ever after! For it is such an important matter!” [Name] blinks when arms hook around her neck, and she feels breath ghosting on her lips. He whispers in a low voice and with half–lidded eyes, “Though, I’m so glad it’s you—you’ve come at long last. My warrior, you’ve worked so hard. Please allow me to conquer those lips of yours for your reward?”

[Name] increases the distance almost immediately, making him whine from the abrupt withdrawal. She really can’t stand Mondstadt people and their wild fantasies. “In your dreams,” Then she searches around for the basket. The princess did add about the retrieval of her basket—it was probably important to her. “Where are the apples? What happened to the apples?” It’s for protocol, so this won’t happen again.

“Why don’t you come here and find out?”

“On second thought, please shut up,” [Name] picks up the wooden material after discovering that it hung on a stand. Now it’s time for the next agenda: the treasure. She needs the treasure because this is her payment for this commission.

She spins around to meet eyes with the young lad once more, but he’s too occupied cuddling with the wisps on the bed.

“Thank you for bringing her here,” he muses, and the wisps respond in chorus with their bell sound thing. Wow. So he can understand the wisps. “Yes, she’s really unprecedented, but that’s what makes her so dear.”

[Name] is confused, but shrugs it off anyway and approaches him again. “Hey, you.”

“I have a name, my fair maiden,” He looks up at her, still with that mischievous grin. “But my children here have names as well, so do not be mistaken.”

“Children? You have children? The fuck? Wait. The wisps have a name?” The wisps reply with tiny bobs of their head. Now this is something [Name] did not really expect. Mondstadt, what the hell? She’ll never get used to this. “Okay, okay, sure? I’ll ask later, um. What’s your name, then?”

“Venti the Bard, at your service.”

So he’s not a prince? He’s not part of any royal status? He’s just a normal person? That thought is comforting, anyhow. But the bows? (Maybe he saved up for it?)

“If you’re still wondering about the apples, they were already consumed by I,” Venti says, and leads one wisp on his shoulder. “They were absolutely yummy, and it is no lie.”

[Name] squints at him. She doesn’t know if she’ll be worried or relieved – so the apples have no effect on him? “The apples were poisonous. It contained chemicals. And they were from the princess’ evil stepmother.”

“Ah, indeed. The wench who initiated all this – but fear not, for she already would be punished for her greed.” Venti summons his lyre, and plucks its strings casually. He’s not a normal person. He can use magic. “Is my warrior troubled that I would get sick? Maybe you should come close and take a quick peek.”

“There’s no need for that,” [Name] swings the basket over her arm, and yanks him, making him stumble. He chuckles—”forward, are we?”—the wisps produce anxious rings, but she ignores them yet again. “I am impressed by your rhyming, but I think you should stop now.”

Venti smiles with his eyes closed. The lyre in his hand disappears, and he takes both of her hands in his own. “I would comply with your wishes, but you must give me something in return.” He opens his eyes again, and they’re sparkling. Okay, the sun is setting, and how can they look so enchanting? (Wait, did she just rhyme? Shit.) “One true love’s kiss, for it is urgent, so then the barriers shall burn.”

Archons. Mondstadt people really make no sense, and [Name] ponders if she should move soon. It’s too much romance. “Urgent? Barriers? And again with the true love’s kiss? I am not your true love. We’re just strangers. I implore you to keep that retained in your memory,” She tries to separate from his grasp, but she’s appalled when Venti shakes his head. He has a tight grip? How, with that lithe body of his? Or maybe because… “Venti—”

The chambers quake when a shadow passes by the windows—darkening the room for a moment. Venti hides his lips behind his fingers, whispering a “he’s here,” and [Name] gives him a questioning look. He? Who’s he?

The loud roar that vibrated the stone walls is enough of an answer.

[Name] facepalms. Of course, the damn dragon he mentioned is real. Of course of course of course.

She unsheathes her sword, but the wisps quickly come together to stop her from wielding it. Before, they were all joyous and victorious, but now, the wisps are apprehensive and adamant. They’re all shaking their heads disapprovingly, like their… father(?) from earlier. “…What?”

Clingclingcling. But it’s Venti who interprets for her, “Dvalin is a dear friend of mine, and he’s here to check if I am fine.” Dvalin? He means the so–called dragon of the four winds? One of the survivors of the archon war? What the fuck. And he’s friends with the likes of this bard?

Venti places his hands on his hips and raises a brow smugly. “Unfortunately, Dvalin hates trespassers, especially when they bring something that can be harmful. I can just tell him that you and I are acquainted, or better yet, each other’s one true love! But you did say that we are strangers, right, [Name]?”

He stopped the rhyming. Venti’s dead serious though it’s obvious from his tone that he’s clearly enjoying this. [Name] groans. She wants to ask how he knows her name but—

Why. Why must she live like this?

Out of all the things in the world, the possible cause of her death is because of an ancient dragon.

Well. At least she dies with honour. This will be a great story for the bards. Sigh.

“I hate my life.”

Then she casts her sword aside, grabs a startled Venti by the waist (“huh, w–wait—“) and then crashes her lips with his.

There’s a gush of wind outside Decarabian’s tower when Dvalin finally senses that the curse has been lifted.

TTRPG Read-Through: Traveller - Book 1

Here is a read-through I did about a year and a half ago (originally posted on Twitter) of one of the all time classics: Traveller by Game Designers' Workshop! This read-through just covers Book 1 - Characters and Combat from the original Traveller box set trio of books. - Christian

This is the 1981 Second Edition printing of the classic Traveller three zine box set! Been wanting to read this for ages now. It's discussed A LOT in Mothership circles.

Really interesting to see GM-less and solo play options here. Didn't realize that was being done explicitly at this time. Also, nice to see "he or she" language here rather than the just "he" you see a lot in older games.

The UPP is clearly the creation of an utterly deranged mind. This seems like a huge overcomplication of just listing stats (unless all your players are proficient in hexadecimal).

[Hi, it's me from the future here (aka now - 2024): I've learned to embrace and love the UPP (or more specifically the planet stat version from one of the other books). It's complicated at first but really quick and cool once you know how to read it.]

I really like Social Standing as a stat replacement for charisma or charm or other social skills you tend to see. Feels like it would have more impact on the story and less of a "Roll to see if you convince him, I guess" sort of anticlimax social skills have most of the time.

I'm now into the "you can die during char creation in Traveller" bits. Really cool in some ways. Really comical in others. It recommends you enlist your bad stat characters into the Scout service because of it's high mortality rate (so you can roll a diff char before play), lol.

Essentially, you roll stats and that's your entire character but to give them some experience they can enlist in a Service. You have to roll to get in and may get rejected. If so, you submit to the draft (get into one at random). You can die. You can gain skills and promotions.

Honestly, the char creation feels like a solo game unto itself. Risk v reward of how far to push your enlistments to boost your skills and standing and benefits. You could have a whole story in your head by the end of it. Great Session 0 material.

As a 34 yr old, this hurts. Apparently, I have -1 Strength, Dexterity and Endurance now...

I admire commitment but asking GMs to use this full char creator for all NPCs (which means generating chars until you get one capable of filling the role you need) is truly too wild. Best part: at the end, it just says you can also pick whatever you want for stats and skills.

The weapons and intro text have much more of a space as a new age of sail vibe to them than I was anticipating. It's cool. Far more Dune than Alien (so far).

Interestingly (unless I missed something), skills are detached from your stats. Your base stats make getting into a Service easier and help you with Saving Throws and such, but skills have their own modifiers based on the situation and your expertise. It's cool (if a bit dense)!

In case you were wondering, there is absolutely no art in this entire book. I'm hoping we'll get some in one of the other two books with vehicles and ships and such but won't be holding my breath. Gives the whole thing a very Serious vibe.

Always interesting to see how older games chose to handle this (or not).

Here's the UPP in action along with quick listing of other character info. Interesting even if it is just too overcomplicated for my tastes.

Can't overstate how much char creation feels like a whole solo game of its own. You can roll a character at age 18 and have them go through seven 4-yr terms in a Service before retiring and having substantial cash, specific possessions, memberships and social standings. Wild.

The character sheet mentions PSIONICS which is exciting (but I'll have to wait till Book 3 for more on that apparently).

Combat is straightforward but has some unique bits: a focus on stealth as an option and movement/attacks occur by all parties simultaneously which means everyone (enemies too) gets to move and then everyone chooses who to attack and you roll them all. Sounds really fun.

Stats have cool effects in battle. Your Endurance stat is the number of attacks you can make before needing to rest (can you imagine if DnD just didn't let you do a base attack at a point?). Strength and Dex can boost or lower certain weapon rolls like you'd expect.

If trained in a weapon, you can give your expertise as a negative mod to your enemy's rolls to attack you to reflect parrying and blocking which is cool. The skills also add to your attack rolls. Skills just seem really useful overall here.

I just love that we get stats for broadswords, revolvers, and laser carbines. Plus, there are even special tables for archaic weapons for when encountering lower-tech civilizations. It feels like a really wide open interpretation of what space could look like. Feels exciting.

A few more equipment tables and a final quick reference page at the back and that's all for Book 1. I'll be back with Book 2 and 3 in the coming days!

Main thoughts: Character creation is very involved but really cool - its own game practically. Skills are very deep in a way that feels refreshing when compared to more stat-focused games. Combat has some fun, chaotic twists. Feels like a wide universe of possibility here so far.

Long winded rant of me talking about NSB, doing a new series, storytelling and whatever else I talked about under the cut, feel free to read it's just me rambling, I don't really care if ppl read it or not it's VERY long 😭

I've been painfully itching to start a new series, I know I'm doing NSB rn, and I do plan to at least finish the normal NSB legacy (up to Gen 9), although I might finish or take a break at around Gen 5 or 6, just because I don't wanna lose motivation and also because it takes A LOT to make some of these posts (for example, the last NSB post... took a lot out of me), and I'm only on Gen 2, almost Gen 3 rn, and I was originally planning to do all 30 or 40 Gens in the updated ver of NSB, which def doesn't seem like it'll be happening right now, because at the current rate at which I post, and how fast things in my game move, Sims 6 will be out before I even finish Gen 30 😭😭

Anyways, I don't know what the series would be about, if I were to do a new series, it would definitely be a lot more story based, if not completely story based, I don't know if I'd do/include gameplay, but I really wanna dive into more storytelling and setting up scenes, I'm not a film or theatre kid by any means, and I really don't know much about writing and setting up scenes and stuff, to be honest, i don't even know how I storytell, I guess it's just regurgitated content molded to shape the statue of my story if that makes sense lmao, I guess it's also the art of using so many fucking metaphors and similes that doing something like comparing love to drowning in a cold ocean comes sorta easy to me? I'm not grammatically inclined and don't know a lot about punctuation, my teachers all kinda gave up on me in English class, so all of my writing is basically self taught, which I guess is the case for a lot of things I do- I feel like starting a new series would help me learn how to write better, even though it seems like a lot of ppl love my writing, I still feel like I could improve so much and do so much better. I already have a couple ideas in mind for a new series, I don't think I'll say much rn just in case I decide to make them a series, but as for right now, I've got plans for Gen 3 NSB (aka Calico), and if I were to start a new series, I would not stop playing NSB, but due to how I function and shit, I would have to put NSB on hiatus, I kind of have a hard time doing two stories at once, hence why Sharkie's story got put on hiatus, because it was too stressful for me to double up, especially with how often I post (at least 3 or 4 times a week), I would like to go back and play Sharkies story and share her story up to this point where I last played her, her story is a lot more gameplay centered (for example, I am more inclined to make a blender scene for NSB, then Sharkie, for Sharkie, I'd do stuff like go to the bar and see how it plays out and take screenshots and just edit those) which I like more, but that's not to say I don't enjoy NSB, because I equally LOVE storytelling as I do gameplay.

While writing this, I did think of something I could do, which would be posting NSB every other week (so one week I do Sharkie or some other series and then the next week I do NSB, then a diff series, so on so forth), the only problem is that usually when I get an idea, and I finish that idea, I like to post it asap, I'm not good at scheduling posts lmao, but it might be worth it if people want to see another series (that is if anyone is still reading up to this point lol), I'd like to channel my storytelling into a more story based save/story, but idk! I'm just kinda doing my thing rn and I'm at a point where i wanna do something different. I especially wanna start doing more in blender, it just takes fucking forever to do some of the stuff I wanna do, and some of it means learning new stuff which is thrice as hard and takes thrice as long compared to normal posing and stuff 😭

You didnt mention a character so Ill do the main four: Jack, Marius, Lottie and Eveline :3 cut bc its longish! the migraine has passed but ill still answer questions hoho

Jack has no idea what colors he "looks good in" (if you asked, he'd probably say none) ... if one could dress him up, he looks great in blacks, deep reds and probably darker earth tones! Marius looks excellent in creams, browns and pastels; he knows it, so he wears it. Eveline has the same coloring as him, and wears similar colors at Flynn's behest, but jewel tones look best on her. Dark greens and blues really bring out her eyes. Lottie loves different shades of green, and has always worn them; she looks good in them but I think dark reds or deep pinks would look nice too?

Marius wakes up on the floor, usually. Or tangled up. He moves around so much its a wonder he hasn't smacked his head. Once his face is washed, he's up and raring to go. Coffee and a cigarette helps. Jack wakes up slow. He has to unfurl himself, pop like three dozen bones, blink painfully at the light, hide under the covers, eventually get dragged out of bed (or off the floor). Eveline probably didn't sleep much, but she takes a long time to get out of bed. She lies there, debating if its worth it. Eventually she slides out from the covers, straightens her floor-length silk nightgown and sloooowly pads to the bathroom. Lottie depends - how much did she drink, and is she waking up before 10am? If she's exhausted and hungover, expect hissing and claws when you wake her up. Before 10 she's basically a zombie, sleepily going through her morning routine. She's got more energy if she's up by noon.

Lottie is pretty much the same; she's @juniperss OC - though under my writing she's probably gotten more,,, wild? Tho Dana just encourages it LOL. Marius was initially closer in age to Eveline and more mature and self-destructive; he could still probably turn out like that, esp if his friends aren't around. Jack changed a ton. He was originally a completely different minor character and Larochka's employer (she's p much the same, just a diff job and a decade younger.) I think, if he was isolated and went further into a life of crime, Jack could turn more into his first draft self - running a sketchy place, violent, and aware of how unnerving he looks and using it to discomfort people. First draft Eveline is the same physically, but more cold and stuck up, and not nearly as much trauma. She's since become far more compassionate and depressed, and has a lot more going on in her backstory. Callgirl!MC is kind of her "leftovers", and without the snobbery. Eveline and Marius weren't initially related, changed that bc they looked so similar and I like family dynamics. That ended up opening a lot of doors to their story.

PLEASE share how you did the outfit mods. I want to make a mod for Shepard with the N7 hoodie, but Spectre logo and colors and as a content mod, and I'm STRUGGLING to find the resources on how to edit the texture/colors on the hoodie itself. Most of what I've found is how to upload a completed edited texture, but I haven't really found much on editing the textures themselves

Texture editing (✿ʘ‿ʘ)っ🔪

I think the thing about texture modding is that people assume that you already have experience in image editing. And it makes sense. Because texture editing is basically image editing.

The recommended image editing programs are usually either GIMP or Paint.net. I personally use Paint.net, but GIMP has more features such as being able to decompose your image into the RGBA channels as layers and then compose them again. But I use Paint.net. So I don't do any of that jfdklajkfds.

Disclaimer: I'm not an advanced modder!!! Everything I've done and said here is what worked for me, and everything I've written is under the assumption that you're also new to modding and are making personal mods. If you want a second opinion, the ME Modding Discord is a good resource, since a lot of the mod makers are there as well and are willing to help.

Under the cut:

In terms of basic editing like re-colouring textures or adding logos, what I basically did was putting colours on a separate layer and then setting the blend mode of that layer into overlay or multiply.

What you're editing is the diffuse texture. This is the one that has the basic appearance. Unless you're making drastic changes to your diff texture (such as replacing anything on your texture, or cutting/adding things to the texture image), you shouldn't have to worry about editing the normal or specular textures. The most important thing is that your texture still fits the mesh's UV Map (and if what you're doing is just re-colouring, then you don't have to worry about the UV map fjkdlajflds)

So here's a very simple example from my Syndicate outfit mod (I.E. the mod where I imported outfits from a now-delisted game). This is a comparison of the original diffuse texture from the Syndicate game and the edited N7 version I did, side-by-side (also this is the un-resized version; I had to re-size it in order to match the UV map):

It's a simple edit tbh. I basically selected the orange parts and changed the hue so they were more red, then I painted over the logo with part of the texture from the left side (I did this on a layer on top of the original texture) and placed the N7 logo on a different layer on top of it (which I took from the N7 hoodie fjfjdklajkfds). Same thing with the gloves, for which I just covered the original logo with a red square lol:

Here's a different example from the longcoat armor I use for John from the Syndicate outfit mod. Here's the original diff from the game, and then the one I used for the mod:

Whoa, it's different! Specifically, there is less of a beige-ish tone to the texture; the arms are more black, and map on one of the sleeves is gone. Basically, I:

Made everything except for the red parts grayscale (I did this by manually selecting the red parts and then inverting the selection)

Created a layer that's just black, set the blend mode to multiply, and then changed the opacity until it was at a suitable darkness. I basically masked the red parts so they wouldn't be affected using the selection I did before

Selected the square of fabric from the right sleeve, copied it onto a new layer, and then placed it over the left sleeve, thus removing the map from the left sleeve entirely

So yeah. It was a matter of just using multiple layers and setting them to overlay or multiply (depending on how you want it to look). I think that would be the most basic way of doing it. The advantages of that is that you can change the colours of the textures without sacrificing any of the actual texture itself.

Once your texture is finished, you're gonna want to export it as a .dds. I believe for diffuse textures you want to use the DTX5 setting. I usually export as .dds since the game uses .dds files anyway.

It's another old page, but I'm adding it here because it's the first tutorial I ever found on texture editing when I first started out, and I found it useful solely because it actually told you what formats you needed to export your textures in. Also some of the links may be broken due to the restructuring of the website, but you may still find them on the master post)

this is from "Goddaughter", which about a demon who was promised a firstborn grandchild as part of a deal he made, and which i've posted a WIP sneak peak before, but you'll notice a diff POV for this. my original draft was called "Something of Mine" and was from Vee/VK's 3rd POV. currently undergoing edits to make it 2nd POV but this part hasn't been updated yet

“You lack drive and follow-through,” Richard diagnosed and VK resisted the urge to laugh. Why did people always think such things of him? “You haven’t even claimed what’s owed to you.”

“You’d think a man would be grateful,” VK’s eyes sharpened as he looked at the foul man, “but there’s no reason to be. In your ignorance, you’ve no idea what I have or haven’t done with what was owed to me,” VK says, his voice mild but his eyes full of storm clouds. He might be amused rather than insulted by Richard Pierce’s lack of respect, but he had his limits of what he would tolerate too. Just because it was higher than other demons, didn’t mean the limit didn’t exist.

Richard, unable to take a hint even so many years later, laughed. “You can talk big all you want, but I saw Michael and his family only the other weekend. Obviously the warnings I gave him about his firstborn were unnecessary. He said he’s seen neither hide nor hair of you—and neither has his son.”

A grin split VK’s face. “In that you are correct, for I’ve no interest in that particular branch of your family tree.”

this is from the end of "Quid Pro Quo", a modern fic with demons as a secret society alongside humans. reader discovered it was all real when her ex-husband's family revealed a deal they're made with a demon years ago that affects her kids. she works with Adriel, a powerful demon, to find a way to exempt her kids and in return she helps him figure out who is embezzling from him. this is from the last part

You huff, blowing some of the bedraggled hair out of your face—determined to be annoyed rather than embarrassed. You drum up as much of that annoyance at the idea his demon form could scare you in your voice as you say, “Would you stop saying that? I’m not scared of you.”

For some reason, this time your impassioned words seem to actually get through to him. Adriel blinks slowly and you can see him start to believe you. “No…” He moves closer to you, so smoothly its almost hypnotizing. “You’re not…”

His yellow eyes are analytic as he looks you over, no doubt registering all the little things a demon could pick up on that a human couldn’t. How your heart is still racing despite the time since your nightmare has ended. Your racing pulse. Your deeper than usual breathing.

He inhales and you know that has to be he most damning evidence of it all. You’ve no idea what your scent might tell him, though you have your suspicions, but you know it won’t be fear.

this is from a little story about a monster who lives in a house (sort of like monster under the bed vibes) and is actually mostly about them bonding with some kids who are left with an irresponsible adult so they're like, are these my kids now? (but the kids do have a responsible parent who is a love interest eventually) - its called "Darren's an Asshole" lol

“Good,” Darren says. “You don’t want me to have to come down here. Don’t make any sort of mess either. Heather, you make sure of it.”

“Yes, Dad,” she replies. He seems to accept her at her word and stomps upstairs—no respect for the wooden floor boards Miruk works so hard to preserve. They flicker with humor when the stairs oblige and trip Darren on the last step. He catches himself on the doorframe but manages to get a splinter, causing him to curse again before he slams the door to the basement shut.

Miruk returns their attention to the offspring standing near the couch they’re observing from under.

“Uh…” the taller of the two newcomers says, obviously at a loss when faced with Darren’s departure. That one must be old enough to know they shouldn’t be left alone.

“I don’t want to be rude, but what would, um, what do think we would call you?”

“Humans always have too many names for things—comes from all those languages you have and your over-inflated feeling of importance as a species. Perhaps…” she says something you can’t even parse. “No? How about” and again she says something vaguely Greek sounding that was more of a word, but not one you’ve heard before. At the continued lack of recognition on your face she frowns, “Hm, no you’re right. Too old. A hound?”

You can’t help, but roll your eyes. “I mean, yeah, I know you looked sort of like a dog, but…”

“A hound of Hel.”

You swallow. “Oh. Yeah, hellhound—I, I’ve heard of that.”

Zrea grins, pleased with herself. Her teeth are so very white against the rest of her, the back of her mouth so dark behind them. You believe that she could hunt a doomed soul to the ends of the earth, even in the condition she’s in. She's all coiled muscle and sharp intent. You feel like you’ve invited a predator into your home. And yet… and yet you are certain she is not a threat to you.

Tbh I really like the... what's the word. Stuffy??? (That's not quite right but it works) sort of sound Kaeya's eng voice has on the early quests and voicelines, though I think they may have tried to slightly up the animeness(?) of it in some later ones (which doesn't sound bad, either; just an observation). It's very human and feels more like a real, genuine voice than the [generic smooth playboy Femme Fatale: Guys Edition] voice some people seem to think of him with would have.

He is smooth and witty and charismatic sounding by design (both his own in-character and by actual marketing character design), and that's good, and I'm definitely not saying anyone talks like he does irl* - I just appreciate them letting him have that smidge of Some Real Guy voice too. It adds character distinction and charm. Like you can hear it some in the "Knight of Favonius" line I think?? That I do hear people talk like in my daily life.

It's interesting, actually; I'm not actually that familiar with most characters' other language voicings (this is extremely still a stupid gacha game (affectionate) and I have a life, hyperfixation be damned), or know enough about the languages to distinguish tone beyond the most obvious, but there are definitely character differences.

I do often see fans of the Kaeya's Chinese voice complaining about his Eng character being more flirty-toned and sadistic, when in it he's a bit more friend's-older-brother-coded (my own 'what I'm reminded of', though the older-brother-ness sentiment def isn't original to me) and pranksterish. And I saw someone joke at one point that Korean Kaeya is just too chill to be the Kaeya in their fic because he's too calm to be bothered by any of it.

One other example I'm familiar with is Childe: ENG shows anger really well, and is a bit more childish and hypocritical, but [I forgot which language but I think it was Chinese or Japanese?] Childe was more resigned and accepting of Sometimes Lying Happens Back To You, if still upset about it, and slightly more mature about that incident. (I looked into his because I saw someone saying they thought that made more sense with him being someone who had to tolerate the Abyss, and I got curious.) And Korean Childe sounds slightly more violent, in my opinion, at least on some of the more playful english lines.

I think all of the characteristics are interesting, of course, and I suppose they're all 'canon' in each language. In terms of fan stuff, I think it just depends on what the goal is! I just go by preference, but I have seen people specify what "language" of each character they're thinking of for stuff before, and even mix and match a few times.

*(related: while I was looking into the voice differences I happened across a clip where his VA was going on this whole thing about how much breathing the Kaeya Voice takes. It is literally so full of air - catch in universe Kaeya silently inhaling as much as he physically can every time no one's looking at him.)

i have several bones to pick with the english voice acting (and most of them have to do with with the goddamned anime-ness which i am, most of the time, not super fond of) but i actually really like kaeyas voice! particularly early game lol which is also a constant with genshin voiceovers for me.. what i really like about kaeyas eng voice is like. the cadence of his words. the rhythm of his speech. it sticks in my head and i keep repeating his voicelines to myself like a stim lol but anyway. once again i digress.

those are really cool details to know about! i had never looked into it before; im not familiar w like.. any of the other voiceovers (stupid gacha game (affectionate) and all that) (i thought about switching to a diff language a while back but i was too attached to kaeyas eng voicelines and that singlehandedly made me decide against it lmao) but i think it's pretty fun how the tone of the voice actor and the words chosen in translation can slightly change the characterization sometimes. i think the smooth talker flirtatious tone kaeya has influences a little how i imagine him, like, what sort of persona he displays to others, what he wants people to believe he is like, etc. in the end its all subtleties! and i love the idea of mix and matching these little characterizations when making fanon content because that is what fandom is all about babey

i've finished the demo! do you think the last scene will change depending on origins? there is a possibility like alchemist would be more link to leander. it's advertised as a dark gothic romance novel for mature audiences but i think since the game is nowhere near finish, they cannot put an age rating on it yet.

ais might be the true route for the game like with other otome games, you have to play the characters in certain order to reach the final/canon ending/route.

there are character sheets??? i feel like mhin is a character that grow on you and leander is the ideal one to start with and vere, you either love or hate him.

really? i thought ais intro was intense esp with that soundtrack! his music theme is the most memorable one. if there are changes, hopefully they will just add more piercings to sen or something like that considering she already have a nose ring.

elyon (?), i felt like he was deliberately designed like that because of his mysterious brief profile information like trying to find the one thing that money can't buy.

Ooo!!! Definitely excited to write bc I relate!! Im actually disabled 😎 im an abulatory wheelchair user so im tempted to make a HC w them reguarding smth like that?? Anyway i get it, so here is my most accurate potrayal mwahaha

Just to add some clarification, im gonna reference some symptoms I personally deal with, though I will do so vaguely! Chronic fatigue means many diff things for many folks so, yk. Also They're all tall, fit, superhuman strength, so even your average person probably couldn't keep up? Idk but i think it would be dramaticly different for mc vs the boys

Edit/ got way too into this lol, sorry. I did mostly use the slow walking as a reference, but less so any swaying, excess sleeping, passing out. This is harder to write about than i originally thought? It's hard to encompass so many symptoms in 1 thing lol, anywau enjoy!! I hope this is okay!!

Lucifer

At first? Kind of a selfish ass. Not directly, but he gets obviously a lil ticked when MC is significantly slower than everyone else. Like this is inconvenient for him, almost feels like MC is doing it on purpose.

Mostly thinks about how it's an inconvenience, how humans are delicate and weak, but as his relationship with MC grows, he's a lot more interested in WHY mc is so fatigued. How does it feel for them?

Will at some point gets the guts to ask. Wouldn't before though because he wouldn't want it to look like he's super interested in MC, but once he accepts that he's in love? Oh boy.

He'll add extra time in the schdule from now on, at least a couple minutes so he and MC can walk at a more leisurely pace. It's hard for him to adjust, because he's usually striding, fairly quickly.

Grows to kind of enjoy it? Taking things slow. It's a nice change for him, but it's a lot of how he shows that he cares. The breaks, stopping to "look" at a shop window when he hears MC breathing a little heavier or when they start to slow down a little more, trudging instead of walking.

Does a fair amount of research on human conditions. If it's a medical condition or not, he'll do what he can to support you. May even assist on your weeks being half online, half in person? So you could have more rest time. It would ensure that Dia's favorite exchange student is preforming to the best of their ability with their accessibility needs being met!!

Will pick you up from the couch and put you in your bed. Sometimes his. Wink.

Mammon

I think Mammon, even originally, was really interested in MC at first glance. He's got a weird protective need? Like must nurture,,,, human,,,

Will keep walking until he realizes MC didn't respond to what he said. Then turns around are sees MC quite a bit behind him and he's confused. Why are they so slow?

Will ask MC, "are most humans so slow?" But doesn't seem malicious about it at all, it's a genuine question. He's had limited contact with humans and they've never really walked anywhere.

Will pick MC up, or tells MC to jump on his back. Doesn't ask, but squats down and gestures.

Will poke fun at MC unless they seem upset about it. Doesn't really mind how slow they are though, it's just an adjustment period for a while.

(Sorry, pov switch.)

On bad days, he'll absolutely help if you ask. He'll bring food and water, by himself, but has trouble thinking of other ways to help without being asked specifically. Probably picks up their homework too, small tasks that they mention.

He's not likely to ask you directly, you'll have to bring up the serious conversation. He just accepts the fatigue as part of MC, doesn't consider that its not normal or is a medical issue? He's willing to put in more effort if you ask though, if he can make things easier for you? He's in. Tries to condense your hang outs too, like the places you go, just so you do the least amount of walking possible.

Overall, 8/10 support.

Leviathan

You're walking to RAD together on a day for a student counsel meeting, the first time he's been out with you, and after a couple minutes of rambling he realizes you've fallen behind?

"Do you not walk to walk with me?" Genuinely a little dejected, feels bad and realizes he's done ALL the talking??

Hopefully you say something like, "no no I love walking with you, I just get so so tired so fast," because he'll respond fairly well. "Oh okay," and then moves on, walking significantly slower. If you watch, you'll notice him looking over and at his feet more often, seems like he's checking his pace?

Once he realizes more so how bad your fatigue gets, and you both grow closer, he'll make more of an effort to leave his own room and go to yours. When he's super uncomfortable, he'll at least meet you at your room to walk you to his room. So you can have company.

Does try to go out of his way to make things easier. Also probably brings it up weeks/months later. Asks you if it's normal. Probably brings it up when your symptoms are especially bad one day, or when you're so tired and cant keep your eyes open.

Isn't one to consider it a burden. It's definitely a change because his legs are a lot longer so he's natrually faster, but he learns to take smaller steps.

Satan

Similarly to Lucifer, feels inconvenienced. His first thoughts are only about himself, only starts thinking about why, how, the details once he gets closer with you.

It's a sudden relevation once he gets the hint that you might feel embarrassed or like a burden? Switches up pretty fast. He's slightly fatigued after his "episodes" for lack of better word, but he imagines its maybe similar to what you experience?

You're sitting in the library, and suddenly he pipes up and asks you. "Is there a reason you're so tired all the time? Why does walking bother you so much?" And as you explain, his curiosity is satiated for the time being. He's silent for a minute after you respond, then, "is it embarrassing?"

Offers some casual reassure once you respond. Tells you that you shouldn't be embarrassed, and that you should accept the things you can't change.

"Would it help if I walked slower from now on? Or would walking be easier if I went with you to and from your classes?" It's a secret plot to spend time together.

He's unlikely to bring you food, but almost has a ritual of bringing you a water bottle every time? Like a human world water bottle? Not sure where he got them. If you inquire about it, he'll tell you that he read how staying hydrated is very helpful for your condition.

Is insistant on the water thing. Also, when you go to the library together, he'll have a small area set up so you can sit while he looks, your stuff is ready and he'll bring you back a book or two with a small flush on his face.

Beelzebub

Notices as you start to slow down, but isn't concerned really, just starts walking slower. But once you start barely moving, he's holding his arm around you until you get to the next bench on the pathway. Belphie had similar issues when they first fell, so the switch to walking slower is much easier for him than anyone, though is now curious as to why you, a human, are having the same issue.

"Did you not eat enough today?" Once you chuckle at him and explain, he's still thinking about food. "Would eating more help?" "Not really, I just get super tired and need more sleep later."

When you hang out, in the kitchen, at school, anywhere outside of your room, he's ready to head home by like, 8pm. He doesn't say it, but he assumes you need to be in bed super early. He's willing to settle for 10, but any later than that and he feels morally responsible for your fatigue.

He gets used to you sleeping in his bed though. He's totally going to get a blanket and a pillow for you and set it near/in the kitchen. He wants to cook but he'd also like to hang out, but you also need sleep, so this is his comprimise.

You both become cuddle partners very fast. It starts with hanging out, and then you fall asleep in his bed and he sleeps on the floor. Once you wake up in the middle of the night and force him back into the bed, he's very stiff for like, a hot minute until you snuggle up to him and doze off.

His help is mostly going to be sustinence. He'll bring you something small from when he goes to eat, or he'll pick up any extra work you have. Is also constantly ready to carry you where ever you'd like. Piggy back rides to RAD? Sure, where do you need dropped off?
