Actually, Techno isn’t here to defend his character, so.... fuck it.
I reblogged that one c!Bedrock Bros post earlier because the post itself is very good and true. But of course people are talking shit about c!Techno in the notes, as usual. I wasn’t gonna say anything because I’m just tired of Dream SMP discourse and Bedrock Bros discourse in particular, and thinking about Techno still feels really painful, but turns out I don’t feel good about leaving it alone either.
From now on talking about the characters, not the real people:
So number one: “Techno didn’t choose Tommy“ (paraphrased) excuse me, Techno did very much choose Tommy. He chose Tommy so hard that he was ready to fight the entire server to defend him. It’s Tommy who chose Tubbo, AKA the guy who ordered Techno executed.
And I get it from Tommy’s POV, I do. Despite all the painful history between them, that’s his best friend. Of course he wants to go back to Tubbo. And he didn’t actually see Techno getting crushed into a pancake by an anvil so it’s easy for him to ignore that part and give Tubbo the benefit of the doubt. And it’s easy for him not to consider how Techno would feel about that, because he kinda just thinks Techno is invulnerable anyway.
But I’m just saying, not choosing Tommy was not Techno’s issue. You’re just straight up making that one up.
Techno’s problem was that he was fixating on getting revenge and wasn’t paying attention to Tommy’s feelings about Tubbo and L’Manburg. Which is also fair enough because he had also just gone through a traumatic experience and it makes perfect sense that he would not feel like trying to be diplomatic or rational about the people who murdered him and imprisoned his friend. And from his POV it seemed like Tommy should have felt the same way since those same guys exiled Tommy himself.
The tragedy of the Bedrock Bros was that they didn’t understand each other. That’s it. If they had understood each others’s needs and wishes, maybe they could have figured something out. But instead they spent like three weeks talking past each other and ignoring everything they didn’t want to hear from each other. And they both did that. It wasn’t just one or the other, it was both of them. Stop trying to blame it all on one person when it was both.
In an ideal situation, Techno would have understood how important Tubbo and L’Manburg were to Tommy, and conversely Tommy would have understood how much of a threat they were to Techno. Also ideally both of them would have understood what Dream was doing. But none of that happened, and all for understandable in-character reasons.
Point number two: It was NOT about Techno’s politics or ideals! It was about the Butcher Army! I don’t get how people don’t seem to get this, that was a really popular stream! And SAD-ist made it into an even more popular animation!
Purely in terms of ideology, there would have been no conflict between L’Manburg continuing to exist and anarchism; you can have anarchist communities. L’Manburg didn’t need to have a government to continue existing, which as far as I can tell was what Tommy mostly cared about, since he wasn’t exactly super big on respecting the government himself. (And in fact Techno had been planning to leave L’Manburg alone, government and all, and start his own anarchist commune instead anyway.) But that’s entirely beside the point because that’s not what any of this was about. What it was about was that L’Manburg wanted Techno dead.
Could he have figured out a way to resolve the situation that didn’t require destroying L’Manburg entirely? Maybe. But he wasn’t in a mindset to care about that because he and his loved ones had been attacked.
And frankly, I’m sick and tired of people who think that certain characters are allowed to have emotional reactions and others aren’t.

“Reducing a character especially a female one to ONLY the role of a caretaker for male character is bad and somthing the fandom has done a lot”
AND
“People are allowed to be excited about a character being kind to child character who is often badly mistreated by the adults around him”
Are two statements that can co exist

I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS, but first, some info
I think considering that the dsmp is very much over, it's important to examine it retrospectively. I don't know if most people like to do this, but I love to dissect media that I really like: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Now that emotions and connections aren't as high (even nostalgia is low), I think looking back and connecting why the dsmp worked so much, what was actually good and what wasn't, and how it affected the idea of a "roleplay" is important.
So, I think I'm going to do that, but first, I want to ask you guys some questions to try and get a feel for the other fans. Feel free to answer as many or as little as you want.
1. What do you think made you connect to the dsmp?
2. At the time when the series was still running, what was your favorite part about it? Least favortie?
3. Now, looking back, what's your favorite part about it? Least favorite?
4. Did you like the ending? Feel free to delve into the different characters endings and not just the main one.
5. Did it affect what you watched/enjoyed afterwards (e.i. the type of TV shows or games or whatnot you like)?
6. Did it affect your view on roleplay?
7. just for funsies, who's your favorite character? :D

not only should there have been more women but the women that were on the server are ignored. cniki wouldve been much more popular if she was a man and it makes me sooooo upset
EXACTLY EXACTLY!!!! c!niki means so much to me and the way the fandom portrayed her infuriates me. and that was the only takes you got!! cause no one cared about her story except for when she was with a man!!! and even then she was over looked. it happened with everyone. like c!puffy being dumbed down to just a therapist for c!tommy. don’t even get me started on c!hannah

If Tommy hates C!Dream apologists then why do we keep on winning
what if you wanted to be really weird about tommy's character and completely miss the story he was trying to tell and in the process also completely misinterpret one of his close friend's character but tommy said 'lol no you're a fucking wanker'.

What I cannot stand about the mcyt fandom, the dsmp corner specifically is the constant self-censorship. Character names are written weird, so are the ships names, which are lowkey mid on average, and on ao3, fuckers don't tag characters, don't tag fandom, don't tag ships, or it's that stupid censoring of the ship names and characters. Instead of proper tagging, they put little condescending "no <3"s and "You searched for this" where those tags should be. Yeah no shit, I was searching for it, I had to dig through utter BULLSHIT to get here bitch. "Searched for it", scoff, that's what the TAGS are usually for, to filter for stuff that you're SEARCHING for
I can barely find shit on ao3, fuck all on tumblr, which, what even?? With as big as the dsmp fandom is/was, I expected so much more???
Of course there's a pattern to it, of fucking course I'm aware of it. It's the "pRoBlEmAtIc" ships that get this treatment and the "bOuNdArY bReAkInG" RPF fics that you can't even DIFFERENTIATE from DSMP ones because neither TAG THE FUCKING FANDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And DSMP has modern setting aus! untagged fandom, and it feels like fucking Russian roulette whether or not I get what I'm searching for!!!!
DSMP AND MCYT RPF FANDOMS, I BEG OF YOU! I IMPLORE YOU!

DSMP: RP lost all strength after one (1) year, unconnected storylines and most of the headcannoning work done by the fandom
Stampy’s Lovely World: Interconnected plots, running for over 750+ episodes, not reliant on fan works for inspiration, raised thousands, still using incredible plot lines and scripted role play to this day, recurring characters, mature themes etc

As someone who is the same age as cc!beeduo, I think something that contributed to the platonic interpretation of c!beeduo's marriage is that the fandom was "babying" them
The goal for many was to avoid going against their boundaries, but I think many people went so overboard with this that they ended up undermining cc!beeduo's decisions for their characters and story
Because they were "the minors" of the server, people shut down the romantic interpretation as inappropriate even though romantic storylines in any other media featuring people this age is considered fine
I do think that calling them minors instead of teenagers played a big role in this too

I saw ppl saying that ctommy became friends w his abuser at the end which like
😭bro he became friends after “the incident “ where no one has their memories and he just wanted to be friends w him bc he met him for the first time (at least in their eyes) he didn’t become friends w him when he had his memories he apologized to him because 1 he was being manipulated and 2 he felt like he was the cause of his problems tho he never excused him of his abuse, he just understood him a bit more of his motivation why he started to mess with him but not how it spiraled into the abuse and torture that ctommy would face. He never excused his actions just understood him more and only became friends when he didn’t have memories

13 24 and 25 for the ask game?
13>) Worst Blorbfiction: c!Dream. he's so interesting and a lot of people like to strip that away into an uwu soft boi. Also the specific brand of Blorbifction that c!Dream gets, gets very victim blamey very fast
24.) Topic that brings the most rancid discourse Anything about NOV 16th. So many people expose themselves as people who should never be around anyone mentally ill ever.
25.) Common fandom complaint I'm sick of hearing. Ummmm idk how popular of a complaint it is now but a lot of people used to say the all lore sucked after exile which was always weird to me. It was also really obvious most of them didn't watch the lore after exile with the way they talked about that. 💀. Or in a meta sense getting really really mad people didn't like their headcanon. I saw that a lot with SBI fans.

I don't know how many dsmp-ers agree with this, but from a storytelling standpoint, c!Dream is just. A bad villian. I think it's a big reason why the ending is so universally hated.
I think in the beginning, it was okay, because we were all expecting more depth to get added to his character later. I saw so many fancomics and theories and analyses that gave such good ideas for a solid character, motive, and overall, a good villian. But we never really got that payoff.
He starts off with a basic "control obsessed" trait. He opposes the L'Manbergians for a mildly valid reason, and then only gives up the fight for control over Tommy (the discs). Then, Schlatt gives him the revive book; he gets even more control crazy. It's a good setup, but it never pays off in the way we want it to. The ending is unsatisfying for many, and nobody really stops to pity Dream, even though that's what they're trying to do. They're trying to pull this "aw, what a tragic character" card, but it's ultimately unsuccessful. Why? Well...
As I said, the setup is good, but things get muddled in the middle. After Dream gets the revive book, there is not a single moment where he's protrayed in any positive light. In fact, after this point, people's view of him gets worse. He slowly becomes more and more unforgivable. The problem with this is that after a certain point, characters cannot have a redemption arc. Or, at the very least, it would be very, very difficult. Dream hits this point. Once he hits that, the ending that people are expecting for him likely ends in death, or worse. The most satisfying ending for the audience is for him to die in a dramatic fashion—kind of like what happened with Schlatt. Schlatt's a good villian with a good ending; it's a satisfying end for a villian while still making it clear that our protagonists' stories are not over. We expected something like that for Dream, and frankly, nothing else would make sense. He had become so evil that the only option was death. There was no pity.
After he escapes from prison, we were ready for this ending. Clearly, it was ramping up for some big finale. And then, he never shows up. I recognize that there were other things going on behind the scenes that led to the lack of content, but it got to such a point that I was beginning to doubt if it ever would get an ending. I started to think that the dsmp would just fade away, all because their lead villian would not show up. All that build up to a dramatic death was, well, dying off. It was taking too long.
And then, when the ending did come along, it only pushes his "evilness" more. He reveals his revive book experiments and his end plan for Tommy and Tubbo. For a moment, the fact that he was gone for so long disappeared. The tensity is back.
And then they pulled the pity card.
It felt like a cop-out. There was no build up to it, no extra scenes with him before this moment where we stop to see his stuggle. No earlier streams where we can see him in an even slightly positive light. It just doesn't happen. So, of course, when they pull the "why can't things just be simple?" we all are yanked from the illusion of the world.
There are a lot of problems with the ending, but the failure to understand Dream's character, role as a villian, and audience expectations for him definitely harm the ending more than others.
I'd love to hear if you guys agree or disagree or just have anything to add! This is just my opinion, so I'd love to hear if anyone thinks differently. I like analyzing <3
