Symphogear SfZ: Aria of the Black Eagle, Season 2
Tumblr media
Episode 9: Ordinary
Edelgard and Dorothea cut loose with Symphogears of their own. Saint-Georges faces a foe that hearkens back to his early days as an alchemist. Millaarc crosses paths with an ordinary man. Byleth has a dream about an old friend.
Edelgard could have expected Dorothea to be over the moon at the prospect of having a Symphogear of her own, but found herself taken aback by just how giddy she was through the rest of the day. Usually, she only had such a spring in her step after a date went exceptionally well. On her way to Genjuro’s office with Edelgard and Heidrun that night, she all but skipped through the submarine’s corridors. “You know, Hubie, I can see why you gave your version of Gungnir a big cloak to wrap yourself in now,” Dorothea told Heidrun. “Even I felt like I was wearing nothing at all sometimes. It was a bit of an adjustment, wasn’t it, Edie?” Edelgard tried very hard not to blush. “It most certainly doesn’t feel like wearing armor,” she agreed. It came as a surprise to nobody that Dorothea’s Symphogear had given quite a lot of flattering attention to her various… what was this world’s slang for them? ‘Charm points?’ “I do think you looked quite lovely in yours.” “Oh, and one good turn deserves another! You were gorgeous! You even got your little horned battle crown back! Well, the horns, at least. I suspect you took a few design cues from your favorite student, too…” “Oh, had I? I hadn’t noticed.” “What type of music do you think we’ll sing, next time we use these? Do you think it would be something aggressive, like Hubie’s?” “I doubt there will be a next time. Custody of the relics is still in question, after all,” Edelgard said, avoiding the question. “In fact, surely that’s what Commander Kazanari wishes to meet with us regarding.” She immediately felt a little cruel for raining on Dorothea’s parade. “Though, one never knows. What genre do you think you would sing?” she asked. “I can’t imagine yours being particularly aggressive, but certainly rousing. Something operatic, perhaps. An anthem of our shared struggle; an aria for the Black Eagles.” “We’ll gladly let you sing for the both of us,” Heidrun said. “Oh, I wouldn’t want to steal the spotlight like some greedy prima donna,” Dorothea said.

TOA Anniversary Munday!
Celebrating TOA and the people who contribute to make our group what it is.
Repost, don't reblog. Only fill in what you feel comfortable sharing!
Happy anniversary, TOA! Here's to many more years spent together.
tagging: you :)
---
Name: Tiff
Pronouns: she/her
Birthday (no year): December 2
Where are you from? What is your time zone? Southern USA, EST. I'm not from here originally though.
Roleplay experience: 15+ years on and off lol.
Got any pets? Not at the moment.
Favorite time of year: Fall!
Some interests and things you like: Cosplay, poetry, sleeping.
Some funfacts & trivia about you: I used to be an idol dance performer! Not anymore alas but it was fun.
What non-Fire Emblem games do you play? Persona, a bunch of rhythm games such as Love Live and ProSekai, and I love the mystery genre (has played Danganronpa and going through Raincode rn lol). Also just started HSR yesterday.
Favorite Pokemon type & Pokemon: I have no idea I'm sorry my brain is fried.
How did you get into Fire Emblem? I saw 3 Houses all over my social media when it was released. I was intrigued so I checked it out and here I am.
What Fire Emblem games have you played? I've played all the newer ones from FE11 on. And I've read scripts/watched videos of FE4 and FE5. I intend on tackling the other games too!
First Fire Emblem game: Three Houses
Favorite Fire Emblem game: Three Houses
Any Fire Emblem crushes? Alfred and Diamant beloveds.
If you’ve played the following games, who was your first S support? - Awakening: Chrom - Fates: Can't remember - Three Houses: Edelgard - Engage: Alfred
Favorite Fire Emblem class: Dark Mage
If you were a Fire Emblem character, what would be your class? A mage, probably a healer.
If you were a Three Houses character, what would be your affiliation? Black Eagles
If you were an Engage character, which Emblem would you Engage with? Edelgard/Dimitri/Claude emblem. But excluding the DLC emblems, then Marth!
How did you find TOA? I saw a post for it on Twitter and was intrigued haha.
Current TOA muses: Edelgard, Céline
Who was your first TOA muse? If you don’t have them anymore, could you see yourself picking them up again? Flayn! I don't have her anymore but I could probably still tackle her. I spent a lot of time thinking about her and all that. I do still love her but I'm not sure I'd bring her back.
Have you had any other TOA muses? Flayn, Dorothea, Annette, Elice, Yunaka
Do you think you have a type of character you gravitate towards? The muses that tend to stick the best for me/the characters I stan the most are usually serious girls lol. Girls with a strong will and determination.
What do you believe you enjoy writing the most? Scenarios that allow for deep-diving into my muses that I cannot get from mundane threads. I love those, but I love the threads where both muses benefit. I also love writing Timeskip stuff that I do on my own time.
Favorite TOA-related memory: All good memories. I enjoy the lore events a lot because my muses always get something out of them. Special shoutout to KKE.
Got any delusions that didn’t see the light of day in TOA that you’d like to share? Have just about finished SoV recently so my muse delusions are Valentia related. :D We'll see though.

let's dance
Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses Ship: Hubert/Bernadetta Tags: Social anxiety, school dances, academy phase also on ao3
When Bernadetta doesn't show up for the dance, Edelgard sends Hubert to go and get her. Bernadetta learns there is more to Hubert than she had once feared. Written for the @fictober-event prompt: "It's not too late, let's go." also on ao3
Bernadetta was feeling lonely.
She knew that it was her own problem. That she could have worked up the courage to go with the others. After all the other girls in the Black Eagles had managed to bring her along to get dresses for the event. They even gave her some advice on make-up and hair. Dorothea did her best to try a makeover on Bernadetta, but the young girl got too anxious and had run off during the middle of it. She heard snickers and whispers about her half-finished look, hair half up and eyeshadow only on one eyelid. Some people said that of course she looked like a clown. She would never be as pretty as the other girls here. Bernadetta had curled up in her bed and cried that night. How cruel could people be? But maybe it was her fault. She was the one who got too nervous to let Dorothea finished and ran off. If she had stayed and let her finish, maybe, maybe....
Bernadetta let out a small whine, tucking her head further against her knees, trying to make herself as small as possible. It didn't matter. It wasn't as if anyone would miss her there. Even if the other Black Eagle students noticed her absence, there was so much going on, they were certain to get distracted by the festivities. Bernadetta just knew that it had to be loud and crowded, filled with people talking and dancing and pressed close together. The mere thought of it made her feel anxious. So there was no way she could actually do there and participate.
Some part of her, deep in her mind, there was a voice that said she was being foolish for missing out on this opportunity, and she'd regret not taking the plunge one day. That she couldn't always be a scared little girl, hiding herself away. Or maybe she could until she became so small and unnoticeable she'd disappear. Bernadetta didn't think that would be such a bad fate. Perhaps her family would be happy if she just never came home. Bernadetta sniffled, upset by the thought, but not wanting to admit to it. She had accepted things as they were. Nothing could change because she couldn't change. She was pathetic, but at least she could be left alone.
A sharp rapt at her door startled Bernadetta, letting out a squeak and tucking herself further together as if she could just make herself disappear.
There was silence for a minute, and she began to wonder if the person left or made a mistake. After all who'd be knocking at her door at a time like this. But then it came again, steady and firm. Like they were in no rush, but wanted to be sure that they were heard. Bernadetta remained as she was, curled up tightly into a ball. If she didn't do anything, maybe the person would get bored and go away.
"Bernadetta."
The voice was clear despite speaking through the door. Bernadetta recognized it immediately, and it only made her more terrified. Why was he here? Was he taking this opportunity to come here and kill Bernadetta? Or do something terrible while everyone else was away? This night just had to get worse and worse for her. She felt like she was going to cry any second now, wishing and praying that he would just leave. He would just go away and let her be. Surely he'd want to rush back to Edelgard's side as soon as he could. But if he was here to do something wicked, who knew how long he'd wait.
"Bernadetta. I know you're in there."
Bernadetta let out a small whine, praying harder and harder for some relief. Was this really how she was going to go? She really thought she'd have a little fanfare, but maybe she was expecting too much.
"Bernadetta."
He sounded so angry. Like venom was dripping on her name each time. She was worried that he might just get the door unlocked and opened. After all, he was a crafty man. Bernadetta knew that one of the dorm's wooden doors wouldn't be enough to stop him if he really wanted to get in.
There was the sound of muttering that the door muffled and another knock. Then silence. Bernadetta waited, daring not to hope that maybe he finally gave up. It wouldn't be the first time after all. The seconds ticked by and continued to with no sound that he was still out there. Minutes passed, or at least she assumed they did. And finally did she start to relax. She uncurled herself, looking towards the door with concern but hope. One foot off the bed and then another. But it was all in vain, the relief that she was going to be left alone. The door handle jiggled. Bernadetta let out another squeak, diving back into the corner of her bed.
"Go away Hubert!"
She finally managed to speak, her voice several pitches higher than it normally was. The handle stopped moving, and she could hear what sounded like a sigh and more muttering.
"Lady Edelgard sent me to get you."
Edelgard sent him? To get her? That didn't make any sense. Why would she do that? Perhaps she felt it only proper to make sure everyone was there and Bernadetta's absence was causing some kind of problem. She felt awful about that, but there was no way she could bring herself to attend. She'd have to ask for forgiveness later and take whatever punishment came with it.
"She's worried about you."
"Liar."
Bernadetta didn't mean to say that. She tensed and watched the door. For a second she thought maybe he was gone, but then the worst possible thing happened. The door opened. In strolled Hubert, the same dour and terrifying expression on his face. He didn't move too far into the room, the darkness of the outside still covering him in shadows. Bernadetta thought she might pass out from how lightheaded and terrified she felt. Every part of her was screaming at her. Was this it? Was this the end for her?
"You shouldn't say such things about Lady Edelgard. She is not lying about her concern."
"Why does she care?"
"I asked myself that too." There was a look of disdain on his face, but a flicker of curiosity as well. He remained where he was, watching her. It made her feel sick to be under such an intense gaze. "But I am not one to question her. Get dressed and ready. I will take you myself back to the-"
"No." Her voice came out small. She was so afraid, trembling and trying to hide, but she couldn't let him do this to her. She was safe here, even with his presence.
"No?"
"No, I can't."
If he didn't seem annoyed before, he certainly was now. Hubert took a step and then another. Bernadetta eyes went wide.
"I am sure you are perfectly capable of at least attending the dance. Are you ill?"
"Yes. I'm feeling really sick." It wasn't entirely a lie, although her symptoms were a product of her anxiety and less of an actual illness. She let out another squeak, nearly banging her head against the back of the wall when Hubert was suddenly in front of her, placing a hand on her forehead. She had no idea how he was going to take her temperature when he was wearing gloves, but she was too frozen in fear to really point that out. She glanced away, trying to avoid his gaze. Was her face growing hotter? Maybe she was getting sick after all. That would be just perfect. But whether by accident or a sudden and unexpected curiosity, Bernadetta looked back at him. Their eyes locked for a brief moment and Bernadetta felt like she could turn to ash in his gaze. She tried to move away, shoving at him. Desperate to flee like some small animal having been trapped by a predator. Hubert grabbed one of her arms.
"You can't hide forever. One day we'll be out of here and what will you do then?"
"I'll figure it out." Bernadetta frowned. "You're hurting me."
Hubert immediately released her and took a step back. Bernadetta took this as a chance to tuck herself back in the corner. "I never knew we had such a coward in the Black Eagles."
"You're right. I am. Now please leave me alone."
Hubert did not leave her alone, his gaze now flitting about the room. It came to rest on the closet and he opened the door. Inside was the dress that Bernadetta had gotten. Like the makeover, she was pressured into finding one. This one was rather modest, long skirt and long sleeves. Dark shades of purple and back. She had loved it, but there was no way she was going to be able to wear it. Hubert grabbed it and moved back over to her. Bernadetta looked at the dress as if he was presenting her with a knife or poison.
"You can stand in the corner if you want to. But you are going to attend."
"Isn't it a little late? I am sure it's mostly over by this point."
"It's not too late, let's go."
Bernadetta frowned, taking the dress from him, but still unsure of what to do. She looked up at him, his expression the same as ever. But he hadn't left. He hadn't done anything particularly cruel either, besides unlocking her door and insulting her. She had feared much worse. Yet it seemed like he wasn't going to let her stay here. Maybe it would be better to just do as he said, knowing it was Edelgard who really requested her presence.
"Why do you care?"
"I don't." His words were quick and easy, cutting right through her. She winced. Then in a softer voice, "It'd be a waste of a beautiful dress."
She watched as he exited the room, shutting the door behind him. She knew that he was going to wait outside of it. Maybe she could find a way to barricade the door? Then she could finish out her night in peace. Yet.... yet she found herself getting off her bed and changing. There was little she could do about her make-up or hair besides the basics, but Bernadetta was sure no one would really care or notice. If she made herself small enough and hide away. Finally, she opened the door. She stared off into the night, filled with more anxiety than she felt she could handle. Hubert glanced at her, something in his eyes unreadable.
"Presentable."
He then walked off, expecting her to follow. She was smiling a little, unsure as to why. It wasn't as if he was complimenting her and Bernadetta wasn't sure if she wanted him to. That felt.... strange. But he was right. She wasn't too late. And even if she did hide herself away, well. She had a nice time.

Alright, here's my edited request:
I'd like to request Dorothea, Hilda (FE3H), Miu (DRV3), & Mina (MHA) with an S/O (gender-neutral is fine) who surprises them with a kiss, and ends up kissing them so well that it makes them completely weak in the knees from how euphoric it feels, but when the two separate, their S/O genuinely says "Was it good for you? That was my first kiss..."
Basically, their S/O just happens to be the best kisser in history by sheer natural talent.
First Kiss with S/O, Turns Out S/O is Great at Kissing
Fandom: Danganronpa, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, My Hero Academia
Characters: Miu Iruma, Dorothea, Hilda, Ashida Mina
Type of Request: Headcanons
Warnings: Miu Iruma
Notes: Here you go!!
Tumblr media
Miu
“Pfff no. You kiss like a virgin.” She is lying out of her ass. Yeah your kiss was amazing and fantastic and she wants more kisses.
But this is Miu, she’d never admit that you are that good of a kisser. Can’t let your ego get inflated!
Seriously tries to find ways to get you to kiss her without admitting that she wants a kiss. She’s too stubborn to ask you for a kiss.
Might just get impatient and demand you kiss her. You have to get practice in somehow.
Tumblr media
Dorothea
She thinks you’re messing with her. No way was that your first ever kiss. You did amazing!
Seriously will need a few more kisses after that one just to see if they’re just as good as the first.
Just to make sure that wasn’t a fluke. There just can’t be any way that was your first kiss.
Really amazed and impressed. You’ll have to give her some pointers because she wants to give you a kiss just as good.
Hilda
Also thinks you’re messing with her. You are just way too good at kissing to not have had any practicing.
Does get a bit suspicious about that too because if you’ve been practicing, like she theorizes, then who’s the lucky person? She just wants to “talk” to them.
Gets pouty about you being so good at kissing because she thought she was pretty good with kissing then you just come along and bash her ego over the head.
Oh well, you better give her more kisses as repayment for keeping her in the dark about you evidently being a kissing god.
Tumblr media
Mina
Uh that was your first kiss? Dang she’s a really lucky girl then. Might tease you about how you could use some work and she’d gladly let you practice on her.
Might poke fun at you a bit, asking if you’ve been kissing someone else and that’s how you’re so good.
Or maybe your quirk is just being an amazing kisser. She’s not complaining if it is.
Does brag a bit about you being an amazing kisser to the other girls. You know, girl talk stuff. Her S/O is the best kisser and no one else will get to experience it besides her~

after looking at the new character designs, i realize that the reason i dislike these ones along with 3h’s timeskip looks is because it feels like, especially for the female characters, that the artists forgot that these are supposed to be medieval characters in war
now, all fe games have had stinkers (every pegasus knight ever), but my main issue with a lot of the newer designs is that they look like weird idols, not soldiers. 3h was especially bad with having strangely-modern outfits with the occasional piece of armor slapped on (if they even got that), but even down to little details these things bother me. why is edelgard wearing ankle boots that look like you could buy them today? why does shamir’s outfit look like generic biker fit except for the pauldron? ignoring those ones, it doesn’t explain outfits like hilda’s or dorothea’s that look like they have no place being on a battlefield.
moving on, here are some still frames of some of the new characters (helpfully provided by u/supergupo on the feh subreddit)
Tumblr media
except for pseudo-jagen on the left and the dude in the top right, none of these characters look like they belong in a war, or even in a goddamn fire emblem game. to begin with, they’re all painfully generic. like damn, these look like genshin designs that were rejected for being too boring. and like… how do they make them all look both overly flashy and boring— it’s legitimately impressive. along with that, they don’t even look like they’re from the same game. compare toothpaste-kun, new villain, and flower crown dude, they all look really weird standing next to each other, like someone lined up their OCs from entirely different universes next to each other. also the art itself is bland which doesn’t help things
tl;dr: kurahana and now pikazo don’t mix well with the fire emblem-y vibe, and i feel like if they were trying to do a throwback game, they should’ve brought back some of the old artists

"A rush, a glance, a touch, a dance"
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Character(s): Ferdinand
Genre: Fluff
Type: Drabble(Was Meant to Be a Oneshot :C)
Description: A Dance with Ferdinand
Warning(s): Soft Enemies to Lovers, Reader is Heavily Implied to Not Like Ferdinand, Pre-Timeskip, Title is from The Song "City of Stars", Bitter Reader, Sylvain is Mentioned, Dorothea is Mentioned, Slight Sylvain Slander(I Love Him I Swear it), 493 Words (It was Supposed to Be More SOBS-)
I've had this sitting in my drafts for AGES(since may 21st, 2022) and I think it's time I release it into the wild sldnks sad thing is... I never finished it TuT
Despite it's incompleteness, I hope you enjoy it all the same!! (Feedback would be great, too, if you can! \^°^/)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Twas simply simple. Ferdinand, a man of charm and equal grace, was to teach you the art of dancing. He insisted despite any sayings of being able to dance, others, and himself, held him in high regards to it after all. No one could be better than him apparently. You scowled to yourself, "How imprudent."
Forced to do an activity with someone who doesn't listen and is far too arrogant for his own good, not to mention the dislike you held for him, is anything but exciting. Couldn't he leave you alone for once? It had always been proper etiquette this, wrong technique that- he'd always find something wrong. He'd always find a way to breath down your back and it was infuriating.
"My, I thought you'd be late, but here you are." The way he stood tall and spoke with poise only further irritated you. He was no where near perfect yet he'd act so. "I'm no prune, unlike you." He shook his head before you even finished your sentence, knowing you would jab at him one way or another out of spite. He frowned, as if he hadn't done the same moments before, "How many times must I tell you to be polite?" If you hadn't been glaring before, you were now. "You've said it so much that I have your damned voice ingrained in my mind, it's a pain." Luckily he wasn't Sylvain, or else he might've slipped a "so you think of me when I'm gone?" into the conversation. "Maybe if you listened you wouldn't find me scolding you." Another sigh fell from his lips as he brought a hand to his face. "..can we just get this over with?" You huffed, shuffling your feet against the smooth tile beneath them.
The way he grasped your hands, leading them to their proper places, was strange, tingly in a way. Though the proximity you had to maintain was nothing less of unbearable. Feeling his breath dance across your skin just about made you grimace, it was hard to tell if it was because you could smell the citrus he ate earlier or the fact that it tickled. You were tempted to step on his shoes, and you almost did when you messed up a step, but you decided against it. There was zero doubt in your mind that he'd know it was no accident. Dorothea was the one to find out how oblivious he truly was.. and he wasn't really. Both of you disliked him, for varying reasons, and would often rant about the dumb thing he chided you both on that day.
"Careful." He steadied you after a sudden tip, your feet had slightly stumbled over one another. You would've been fine without his help, you knew, yet you found yourself mumbling a thank you. The way your heart raced, the rush that crashed into you stole your breath for just a second - it was familiar but equally foreign.

ancient being fallout guy anon here. sorry to assume you are not vampiric age, as myself-- if you are as ancient as the sea- perhaps we have a friendship building!
that is to say im in my mid twenties lmao
anyway.. Im a newer follower i think- to your account. Tell me about your favourite fire emblem characters (Ashe) ((not clickbait))
FALLOUT ANON IS BACK!!!
I'm not too far off from you lol, I'm definitely not older than you but I'm not a kid
So I'm a new fire emblem fan I'll admit, I've only ever played three houses and three hopes, so I can't speak for characters of the older games :C but I am steadily learning
Out of the rosters of three houses and three hopes, I have to say that I have a deep love for every character and their story! Of course I'm an Ashe fan, head over heels, it's obvious if anybody looks at my account for like two seconds lol
I'm in absolute love with Mercedes, just to name drop another
I have a particular fondness for the Blue Lions, as they were the first route I did and my introduction to the series as a whole
I love basically everyone, maybe the only non-villain character I dislike is F!Byleth
As someone who identifies with he/him pronouns, I played as M!Byleth, so I really love him and I'm biased. Something about playing as F!Byleth for even one route made me uncomfortable, I could make out an entire list as to how I don't like her. Not as in like a "I hate her and you should too!", just as to why I personally wouldn't play as her again
I can love Mercedes for her soft and motherly nature, I love Ferdinand for his ambitiousness, I can love Linhardt for his perceived laziness but he's so much more. I can love Marianne for her story, I can love Sylvain for his skirt chaser self, I can love Caspar for his himbo ways, I can love Dorothea and empathize with what she went through
I'm in love with all the moving parts of this world, it's one of my favorites of all time, aside from Tes 5 (which is a whole other story lol)
Apologies for the rant lmao

my best friend! they had been talking about it for a while and it seemed interesting so i asked for it for my birthday. though i’d been interested in fire emblem for a while thanks to super smash bros
yes, though i’ve wanted to play other ones for a while but don’t have any consoles to play them on
chris hackney. i know nothing else that he’s done but he did dimitri so well
answered here
crimson flower. i’ve had the game for over two years and i still haven’t finished it yet (mostly cause i despise white clouds)
azure moon, 100%
answered here
tragedy of duscur, definitely, but also what happened with mercedes and jeritza and what happened with ashe and lonato.
the scene after you defeat cornelia in fhirdiad in azure moon. when dimitri says “bloodstained as i am… am i fit to be king?” it rips me apart every time in the best fucking way. best scene to me, hands down, can and will recite it word for word whenever it comes on
bow knight. i love it so much, it’s such a fun class to me. and no, it’s not just cause of ashe, though he does play a role in it
maybe im just bisexual but swords. always.
i don’t know where it is and don’t have the energy to find it but there’s this piece of felix and sylvain stabbing each other in the rain that makes me scream every goddamn time
this!!!
this!!!
i’m working on a thing for ashes birthday on the 17th, but no peeks!
seteth, jeralt, shamir, rhea, flayn, catherine, alois, gilbert
linhardt, caspar, hubert, dorothea, ferdinand, bernadetta, petra, edelgard
ashe, dimitri, felix, sylvain, mercedes, dedue, annette, ingrid
claude, hilda, marianne, lysithea, lorenz, raphael, ignatz, leonie
explicitly, yuri, however every character i have ever written will always be written bi coded so take that as you will
literally all the blue lions
linhardt, actually! i headcanon him as ace but not sex-repulsed
answered here!
yuri!
ashe is pan, and felix is unlabeled
ashe
ignatz
answered here!
ashe. the narrative truly did him dirty. he could have been developed as a foil character for dimitri, even more so than felix, but no. he is still kind of a foil character for him and i will elaborate on that if asked but yeah.
the lords should have gotten supports together. there, i said it. i’m not sorry. i want to see claude play a prank on dimitri is that really too much to ask. also ashe and felix should have gotten an a support
answered here!
answered here!
i hate bernie’s preskip hair so much
lorenz 😭
answered here!
ingrid and sylvain
without paired dialogue, ashe and marianne. i love them. with paired dialogue, dedue and dimitri
dimitri. making him blush is so fun. i love him.
ashe and felix
ashe because i love him, the rest of the lions because i love them, marianne because i can’t bring myself to kill her, and lysithea cause she’s a beast
i don’t know who came up with this, but i love the headcanon that the fraldarius family proposed with a dagger with the fraldarius crest and the marrying families crest engraved in it, and that the dagger goes to their first child. i also love the theory that magic users have scars on their hands.
i don’t think i really have any tbh
either felannie or mariashe
yuriashe and ashelix
mariashe
i firmly believe that the lions + yuri are all in a polycule, but on a smaller scale annette/ingrid/felix/sylvain
boring and typical but dimileth holds a very special place in my heart
petrashe. i have no reason to hate it but i do.
ingrid/dorothea. idk i just… don’t see it.
mariashe.

October Fanfic Rec Prompts
I was inspired to share some fanfic recommendations thanks to this weekly prompt list originally made by @piratejenna. My week 1 recommendations are extremely belated but alas here they are.
The prompt in question was “Fics you’ve read more times than you can count” and or “Fics you’ve stayed up reading later than you should have.”
As a final note: These are mainly for the fandoms of Touhou, Fire Emblem and Mili.
Touhou Project:
Tipsy Words: Nightly Stroll of Moon Goddess and Weird Rabbit by CroakenTheCroakey: This fic starts off with everyone’s favorite joyful alcoholic oni Suika trying to impersonate a rabbit. What more do I need to say? More seriously, this fic had several characters who most people wouldn't think to put in the same room together interacting. Most notably the pair the title itself is alluding to, Ibuki Suika and Kishin Sagume. It was interesting seeing all these different personalities together and the drunken shenanigans were hilarious and adorable. Another sweet thing about this fic is that Suika’s initial motive was she wanted to be a great party host so she could bridge the gap between the Lunarians and the Earth Folk. So earnest lol, a real pick me up for this fandom if you need it.
The Great Danmaku Festival by Aardvark123: Reimu just wanted to hold a spectacular festival for her friends but of course, some other shrine happens to be holding a separate festival at the same time. Touhou-style shenanigans ensue. This was a genuinely entertaining story that incorporated a good portion of the characters and definitely felt like something they’d get up to in-game. Plus the fight scenes aren’t too shabby either. If you want to see some chaos that would make ZUN proud then check out this fic.
Touhou Summer of Ships 2021 by Mimic_Teruyo: If you couldn't tell by the title this rec is a little different since it's a collection of shorts as opposed to one continuous story. The collection was a nice blend of both pairings and genres. No matter what character or ship the author wrote it always came as IC and the wide range of stories in this anthology is what makes it memorable to me. It also got me considering some new pairings like Reimu/Letty so kudos fer that.
Fire Emblem:
Soft as Silk by Acureforliving: A Marianne x Ignatz fic that never fails to make my soulless heart beat. This is such a touching fic that fills you with a warm fuzzy feeling while being a fitting love story for both characters. In particular, it really captures the shy deposition these two possess and how they come to bring each other out of their shell. Seeing the steady progression of their relationship through a series of consistently adorable and lovingly awkward interactions was beautiful and it all comes together in a perfect ending. If you like this pairing, I’d recommend giving this one a read.
i want to see the stars reflecting you by seasparks: I read this at 11:30pm thinking it would be quick but uhh…it filled me with one too many Edeleth feelings and then I couldn’t sleep for another 2 hours but more seriously I liked that this fic is set in the period of time between White Cloud and Part 2 since I feel like there’s so much good potential to explore how the characters were coping with…well everything that happened in the Academy Phase’s climax. Especially Edelgard as you can imagine. This fic deals with a lot of the complicated feelings she had after her ‘victory’ and it was interesting seeing her in such a vulnerable position. Dorothea’s interactions with her really put the comfort in Hurt/Comfort and overall this was a really nice fic that covered both their friendship and Edelgard’s angst at losing her idol.
Goodnight, Lucina by Doctor_Bedlam: The premise of this fic is that for various Completely Logical Reasons all the FE:A kids wind up in Lucina’s bed and thus a massive cuddle pile is formed. A lovely thing for us readers to experience but uhh not so great for poor sleep deprived Lucina. This was a real feed good fic and the buildup of how one good sisterly deed spirals into an impromptu slumber party is nothing short of perfect. We also got this iconic line “Insult not the noble turnip,” that’s all the advertising you need.
Beruka: The Equal Assassin by Sketchione: A Beruka/Camilla fic that starts out pretty fluffy with Beruka being confused as to why her liege is so insistent on spending time with her…only to later reveal that Beruka’s struggle to understand her own emotions leads her into a downward spiral that results in her attempting to take her own life. I read this fic way back in 2016 and it’s always stuck with me. Beruka in general is such an underrated and underutilized character in Fates for the aforementioned reason of her struggle with emotional repression. While the beginning bonding interactions between her and Camilla are very sweet it was definitely tragic to see how Beruka just couldn’t accept her affection which is what starts her spiral. Camilla’s reaction to the event was also heartbreaking and something that’s particularly notable about this fic is that it has a sorta ‘choose your own ending’ with chapter 4A being the bittersweet so-to-say ending and 4B being a straightforward tragic ending. It’s got something for everyone so why not give it a try
Miscellaneous Fandoms:
So I Can See You Again by Renjo: A rare fanfic based on the band Mili whose songs are known to have some extensive lore behind them. This one in particular takes a look at the characters of Tellulu and Lancel0t from their song “Ga1ahad and the Scientific Witchery”. This fic continues to depict the destructive nature of their relationship as seen in the song but it takes little hints of lyrics and adds context or theorized lore between them which helps make these characters and their world fleshed out. Additionally, it has the kind of subtle or perhaps not so subtle reference to body horror that Mili loves to sneak into their songs which was very well written. Definitely say give it a read while listening to the actual song haha.
This is in no way a complete list but believe me, more recs and more fandoms to come soon...

the curtain rises for act two, featuring more angst, more action, and a fancy new logo!
Tumblr media
Episode 1: Words Without a Rhyme
The Black Eagles discover penguins. Byleth begins to remember her past lives. Cagliostro meets Heidrun and instantly becomes t4t.
“I don’t want to kill Edelgard.” He said it softly, quietly, so the army of the Church of Seiros wouldn’t hear it. But to his ears, it felt as though his voice rang out and echoed throughout the foyer of Enbarr Palace. His students heard it, though. Some looked somber. Linhardt. Dorothea. They were trying hard not to think the same thing. Ferdinand looked almost too confident as her words reached his ears. But Caspar, Cyril, and Flayn, of course, were unmoved. Seteth placed a hand upon his back. “She is one of your students,” he assured him. “I understand your desire for a path to peace.” Byleth knew what he would say next. “But she will never bend to our will.” He nodded. It was all he could do to keep his head clear. “You do understand that, do you not? We have no choice but to kill her.” He nodded again. He had no choice but to kill Edelgard. “We have already killed Hubert,” Ferdinand said. Too confident. Too decisive in his words. Byleth had overheard him criticizing Hubert once, back at the academy, for only doing whatever Edelgard said and never thinking for himself. But lately, it seemed Ferdinand let Byleth and Seteth do more and more of the thinking for him. (‘It does not matter what I think,’ he’d said to Hubert just outside the palace before striking him down in battle. ‘Those are my orders.’) “She has it coming!” Caspar shouted. “After all, she started this war!” He was right. She had started this war. Because she would never bend to the Church’s will. And Byleth knew what happened to people who didn’t bend. They all knew. They had seen it on Magdred Way, seen it when Catherine’s mighty Thunderbrand had shattered Lord Lonato’s skull and spilled out all his rage and grief on the grass. The Church broke them. That was what he and Seteth were here to do.

i am enjoying fire emblem warriors: three hopes much more than i thought i would! well, i knew i'd love seeing the characters again, but the warriors style gameplay has never really appealed to me... it's kind of mindlessly fun, though? i'm playing on normal difficulty plus casual (so no one dies permanently... i'd be too sad...) and it's been entertaining without being difficult. of course, it's only the first little bit of the game, so it remains to be see what the challenges will be like later in the game.
i'm very happy we're getting an expansion on some of the ~lore~ that three houses mentioned but didn't expand upon, and also that we're seeing the actual faces of mentioned family members in 3H. (even though uhhhh so far they've all been pretty ugly LMAO) i'm interested to see where the story will go from here. i think the 'twist' on how the story progresses is a good choice, but as many fire emblem games do, it could get worse as it goes along. we shall see!
dimitri is as Dimitri as ever and i love him for it. i finished the azure gleam demo, so now i'm working on scarlet blaze. after, i'll do claude's route, which i cannot remember the name of at the moment
i am also a big fan of arval and shez. i picked f!shez because of course i did, and i really like her voice! i am playing with the japanese audio but once the full game releases, i'll have to go back and relisten to some of the supports with the english VAs. the english cast is generally great (with a few stand-outs, like dimitri, dorothea, felix...) but i much prefer the japanese audio.
anyways surprisingly fun, would recommend checking out the demo if you've never played a warriors game

I have two crossover one where it's a part of the fe3h cast that get dragged to Faerun the other where it's the bg3 companions that get dragged to Fodlan.
The premise is that the Nautiloid teleport to Fodlan ( for a reason that might be linked to TWSITD- ) during its course. It either crash right near a certain fleeing trio purchased by bandits OR steal the House Leaders + Byleth ( and maybe a few students along the way ) and accidentally bring them to Faerun with a newfound tadpole in their head.
Imagine the possibilities! There's sooo much incredible support that could happen characters- This one is a bit out there but imagine Shadowheart and Manuela: it's start as a light-hearted support where our 36 years old Manuela realize Shadowheart is literally 40, but then it move on to a deeper discussion about the place faith take in their life and what it means for them... It could be a way for Shadowheart to slowly start to realize her relationship to faith is abnormal and hurtful ( also I love the Edelgard/Manuela support so I'm biased ). There could be a support between Wyll and Edelgard around what it means to sacrifice yourself, between Lae'zel and Felix/Catherine about the horrible aspect of being a fully dedicated soldier who blindly follow orde ( also sword fighting ), between Halsin and Bernie Bear/Marianne because of their love of nature and how he could really help them in different way over their issue ( since he knows sexual abuse and he can give a new perspective on Marianne fear of "turning into a monster" ), between Karlach and Lysithea/Hapi/Edelgard around the abuse they faced and the trace it left on them ( also the relationship with time with Lysithea :( ), also between Karlach and Dorothea because those two would LOVE each other ( their disdain for violence, their fear even if opposite of time running up, their mutual past in the street, the abuse they faced, their loneliness, their wish to do good, their kindness but also their love for dancing/singing and how their both looking for a partner :] ), between Lae'zel and Edelgard/Petra around what it means to be a good leader and revolution/liberation, ETC
And on fe3h cast in Faerun, there's sooo much to say about what class they would, their reaction to the different society, the people they would meet ( I NEED Dimitri to meet Ketheric- ), the way they would approach each problems of the campaign, ECT
But I'm going to stop because I have ranted for way too long ( and I haven't even mentioned half the stuff I have- ), I'm very very sorry, I have lost control :( I can't wait to see more of your thoughts on bg3 and fe3h however :)
OH HELLO ANON!! i love your two crossover aus !! i have fairly similar ideas to that since canonically in the fire emblem universe, realm travelling and all that is a decently common occurrence so it wouldn't be a stretch for something to go wrong or the likes and end up in faerun!!
NOOO don't worry about ranting honestly!!! it's so well thought out and i feel you on a spiritual level here, nonnie!!

Felix’s stomach growled as he passed back on the way from the training grounds to the dorm. He took bit of a meandering path around the campus of Garreg Mach purely because he needed to cool down from all the drills that he done. All of which were so hot and strenuous on his body and thus, he needed that period of casual exercise before ceasing it all in favour of a nap and so, he passed by the kitchens and mess hall on this winding path that he took around the grounds.
He was hesitant to pass by those areas of Garreg Mach because usually, someone wanted to stop him for a chat, Raphael sometimes just to say hi and have a word about the weather or someone like Dimitri who wanted to reinvigorate him for old time’s sake and share in his second lunch of the day. Felix wasn’t really interested in many of his peers for all sorts of reasons, those two examples especially, but he would admit, as he slunk around, he did pause as something gave him interest.
His ears pricked up. He heard music - no, no instruments, just singing - coming from inside the kitchen, from behind those huge, thick doors of oak that prevented people from snooping and taking snacks. The singing was familiar and though Felix felt at peace with how wrecked he was after all his training drills, he did stop to lean against the stone wall and listen in.
The lyrics were garbled and nonsensical but charming in how childlike they were. Felix sighed out of relief as he listened in, unable to quite make out a specific voice or talent, though he could rule out Dorothea as this was very much not opera. Again, too childlike, more like the songs that reminded him of the skipping songs that Ingrid had introduced him to as a child.
He yawned and his eyes began to close, feeling as though he were being soothed by a lullaby and just as he had such serenity in mind, his eyes snapped open. He had a revelation. A horrible, terrible revelation that had lit a fire underneath him.
   That was Annette singing.
   And only Annette.
Felix could hear the footsteps of only one, tiny girl which inside the kitchen meant that the little disaster chef was in there on her lonesome. All sorts of disaster was fit to fall upon either her or worse, everyone else. Felix forced the door open, making it bang and clang as he came inside and- and-
And everything was better than he was expecting. There were no smells of thick smoke nor was anything in flames. Annette’s apron that she wore to protect her Academy uniform was even spotless, somehow. She was clutching onto a broom, very, very confused, looking up at Felix.
   “Everything okay?” she asked.
Felix huffed. Embarrassed to have lost his cool facade but he did care about Annette, unlike a lot of his other peers… He did have interest in her. Only because she was a fool and needed someone to keep an eye on her and clumsy tendencies. No other reasons, like her ginger hair being cute and her eyes being sweet and her singing being as lovely as it were in how rustic and shameless it was. No other reason than her being her, really, Felix reasons as he went a little red in his sharp, pale face.
“Er, yes,” Felix replied and he looked around hastily, “you don’t have anyone else on cleaning duty today? Like, um, where’s Mercedes?”
“Nope, just me.” Annette chirped. “Mercedes is in class right now, doing extra studies and I was feeling peckish so I thought I’d come make a small snack but when I got here, I thought the kitchen could use some tidying up, whoever was on last did a shocking job but I’m almost done. What about you? Let me guess? More sword drills in the training grounds?”
   “Yes.” Felix grumpily admitted.
“You must be starving as well then.” Annette said and she put away the broom. “Let’s both have afternoon tea together, Felix, why not? I can finish tidying up after we eat.”
Annette stared Felix down with the biggest, poutiest eyes and he could see her little lower lip tremble. He huffed again.
“Fine,” Felix said with an annoyed, flippant hand gesture, “I’ll have whatever you're having.”
“Yay!” Annette chirped. “I’m going to make toast with honey and butter, is that alright?”
   “Yeah, it's fine.” Felix shrugged.
“Then let’s get cooking.” Annette announced.
She smiled widely and had a face like a beam of sunshine. Felix stepped out of her way and supervised her ominously. She plucked matches from one of the drawers and picked up a rack from the closet. She hitched the rack over the fireplace and this is where Felix got nervous.
He watched as she tried to light the fire. Rubbing the matches over and over, striking them to naught at all. In Felix’s opinion, this was very fortunate, he could very easily imagine Annette creating a blaze or an inferno, so he took over. His fingers fumbling with hers as he removed the matches. He crouched down and very gently, in the charcoal and wood of the fireplace, he lit it.
“Thank you so much!” Annette beamed.
Annette then went over and fetched some bread. She set out a chopping board and began to cut up slices of thick, day old bread. Felix watched carefully and lo and behold, she did nick her finger on the second slice. Felix sighed but Annette was a step ahead of him, bandaging her finger tightly and then smiling up at him oblivious to his concern.
“Do you want or two slices of toast?” she asked.
“One is fine.” Felix grunted. “And I don’t want too much honey, either. Butter’s fine, though, I guess.” He added a shrug with his order.
   “Roger.” Annette replied.
She did, however, cut one more slice for herself before returning the bread to its homey, wooden breadbox. Here, Felix assisted her by grabbing tongs and helping draw out the rack from over the fire. Annette carefully placed down the various slices over it and already, the bread began to crispen and crackle.
“How burnt do you like your toast? I’ll admit, I like mine very light.” Annette said.
   “Medium’s fine.” Felix told her.
“Sounds good. I’ll butter mine up and then get yours and we’ll slather ‘em in honey all at once.” Annette replied and her eyes widened. “That gives me an idea for a song.”
“Of course it does…” Felix snickered fondly though most of the fondness was lost on Annette who was gallantly unoffended as she began to sing her toasting bread.
Felix listened to her prattle all sing-song, all whilst resisting the urge to tap his toe to it - and whilst keeping an eye on the toasting bread. Annette was now in a world all her own and honestly, Felix was blessed to witness it. Though, her nose twitched and they could both smell the most scant burntness and smoke.
   “Will this do?” Annette asked.
Felix peered into the space between the rack and the ceiling of the fireplace, “Yeah, it’ll do.” He didn’t have the energy to argue, especially since Annette seemed raring to go to get that jar of honey out.
Felix edged out the rack, it was hot even through a mitt but Annette was quick as quick as could be to put the toast back on her chopping board. She was smiling, swing it around, as she returned it to the bench. She picked up a blunt butter knife and this was probably the most relaxed Felix had been seeing Annette with a possibly dangerous utensil.
She thickly slathered butter and honey onto the toast, careful not to burn her fingers as they flitted around the crust. Her tummy rumbled and she licked her lips. She glanced back up at Felix and he caught notice of freckles on the edge of her face he had never noticed before, flustering him.
“You ready to dig in?” she asked and offered him the most burnt slice of toast that was embalmed more with butter than honey, unlike hers which were the opposite.
“I am.” Felix said with gratitude just leaking into his voice.
His expression was even soft as he accepted Annette’s gift. Soft right up until Annette managed to befuddle him greatly. His brow quirked as he watched Annette turn her toast upside down, the honey thickly trying to escape its home upon the butter, dripping and drooling. She just licked it up like a bear cub.
“What are you doing?” Felix asked instead of taking a bite of his toast like he kind of wanted to do.
“I have a very scientific theory about taste buds, Professor Hanneman would be proud of my experiments.” Annette prefaced, still battling her escaping honey that was getting all over her hands and apron now as she nibbled the bread whilst eating. “Food,” she began seriously, “tastes better when your tongue gets most of it. The roof of your mouth has significantly less taste buds, I’m sure. You try it, you sceptical grump.” Annette ate more of her toast and her expression turned totally blissed out to emphasise the confirmation to her hypothesis.
Felix groaned. He couldn’t believe he was doing this… It was going to be such a mess and sticky messes were the worst. He could deal with blood but ick, wasted food was a whole different quandary and yet.
He turned his honey butter toast upside and Annette squealed in delight as he sampled her hypothesis.
As he ate, he found himself savouring more of the crunch to the bread. It was a day old and a little burnt but he liked that texture and undercurrent of taste. The butter seemed fuller to the mouth feel and the honey. Felix wasn’t a sweet tooth by any stretch of the imagination but that honey. Maybe he hadn’t had this particular blend before but it was perfect, gooey with an understated, floral sweetness. He had to chew very carefully so not to let out a too satisfied moan but by Annette’s expression - pleased, even vindicated - Felix had shown too much beneath his icy facade.
“You like it?” Annette asked eagerly.
“It's good.” Felix stated plainly but something of a smile snuck onto his face anyway, just at the corners of his lips, sticky with honey. “I might do some research into this. Train the mind as much as the body or something like that…”
“I can make more right now if you wanna help.” Annette excitedly suggested.
“I’m sure another slice won’t spoil me for dinner.” Felix relented and let Annette go on her way to make more honey butter toast. “And Annette?”
   “Yes?” she said upon prompt.
“I like salt and pepper on my honey toast… Ever since I was a kid.” Felix admitted.
Annette’s expression grew even brighter, “Okay, I’ll go fetch some from the cupboards then.”
“Thanks.” Felix mumbled as Annette went about, flitting through the kitchen, humming more of her sweet, nonsensical song and it was a balm to both Felix’s belly and soul.

Post Grondor Field AM Analysis
I'm prefacing this by saying that I'm still not sure I can write a good analysis of this scene for two reasons:
1. I don't know what comes after, and
2. I'm very emotionally involved in what happened.
But I tried my best. One thing is for sure though, what happened in Grondor in AM was an incredibly significant turning point for AM and Dimitri and my thoughts and analysis on it will definitely expand as I keep writing about and playing the game.
Part of me is just so happy I got to see Dimitri's supports, have the inevitable turn around, and get to do things like tea and dinner time again that it's hard to be objective about this scene.
And by "this scene," I don't mean that actual fight at Grondor, but everything from Fleche's attack to Byleth's words in the rain later.
It wasn't all about Byleth . . .
Given how poignant Dimitri's character arc has been so far, I had a deep rooted fear player-pandering would ruin it. Byleth, as a concept, isn't bad, but too often the heaps of praise feel underserved and other things (like Claude's intelligence, Edelgard's relationships with everyone else) get ignored to make more room for player-pandering.
Thankfully this did not happen. Byleth, throughout the early chapters of AM's part 2, failed to reach Dimitri. And, honestly, seeing Byleth actually struggle for once has done wonders for how I view her character. Still, I worried that player-pandering-power, rather than something that felt earned, would cause the inevitable eye-opener for Dimitri.
But it wasn't just Byleth. Fleche's vengeance kicked everything off, what veered Dimitri away from his fate in other routes. He accepted his death at her hands, not bothering to defend himself. Rodrigue stepping in the way and his parting words forced Dimitri to confront things he'd ignored. Throughout AM so far, people have posed questions to Dimitri who refused to answer them because he didn't want to face what they asked. But Rodrigue dying for him, spending his final words telling Dimitri to live for himself - combined with Fleche's attack - forced Dimitri to confront things he avoided. It wasn't until after all of that when Byleth steps in.
And Byleth didn't "fix" him either. Dimitri's supports show a young man who's still very much struggling with his mental health, poor self-image, his previous actions, and wondering if he deserves not only to live for himself - but if he even deserves to live. Byleth didn't hand-wave Dimitri's problems away.
Everything about the scene is stronger because it didn't fall back on player-pandering, but more earned, realistic, and dramatic actions and consequences - including Byleth's involvement which felt far more earned than usual because of prior failure.
But I wish Dimitri's friends played a bigger role.
Not everything was perfect though. I wish we got a little more than we did from Dimitri's house mates - especially his childhood friends Sylvain, Ingrid, and extra special mention to Felix and especially, especially Dedue.
Throughout all of AM, none of the above mentioned characters feel utilized to their full potential. This isn't a problem exclusive to AM, and by all means it's far from the biggest offender, but given how close all the ties are in AM, it's felt when it's not there.
I still don't know what exactly I would've done with them. Maybe I'd need to make the game an actual novel to do it, and you can't forget how perma-death has historically held back games at times, limiting major moments to a select few "retreat" candidates.
Still, though, getting a bit more from Ingrid, Sylvain, Felix, and Dedue would've made the scene even more powerful.
I actually really liked the scene in the rain.
I haven't made it a secret that I dislike Byleth. Or maybe disliked is more accurate. Lately I've been rethinking my stance on Byleth, in part because I've heard from people who like her or found ways to make her work and from my own thinking about the game while planning future write ups.
I don't think it's Byleth I really dislike, but the player-pandering. Separating the two isn't easy, but it's easier since I've starting coming around to seeing Byleth as her own character.
There's been a few moments that made me care for Byleth, and this scene in the rain was one of them. Because she didn't just fix everything. She tried and failed for months to reason with Dimitri, and despite everything she never gave up on him or failed to keep offering her hand.
I'm not going to lie. I got all the bubbly, heartwarming, heartbreaking feels the writers wanted me to in this scene. Seeing Byleth reach for something and fail, and then finally, finally get through was rewarding in a way many of Byleth's prior accomplishments aren't because this one felt earned. And by God did she earn it.
Some people will likely disagree with that last point, but I disagree with them. She asked Dimitri hard-hitting questions, forcing him to come to unpleasant conclusions rather than trying to force him into anything. She kept Dimitri from veering to far off course, even at expense to herself when she killed Randolph. She saved Dimitri from Fleche when he refused to save himself. She quietly supported him, coaxing out the good she knew was still there and refused to give up on.
I'd never in a million years say someone in real life should put up with Dimitri's toxic behavior and verbal abuse, even considering his extreme trauma and aggravated mental illness. But seeing someone fuck up so badly still get forgiven, still get supported, still struggle but honestly change for the good, still get loved, start to accept and forgive himself through the power of love and forgiveness from others is very powerful, especially since media so often downplays those "softer" things as weakness in comparison to the "badassery" of ambition and stoicism. Using Byleth, who previously had little experience with feelings, who was encouraged to experience them in healthy ways by Dimitri, return the favor isn't really the worst choice.
It's cliche, but cliches aren't always bad.
The mentor dies. Redemption in the rain. Revenge against the protagonist's actions opens their eyes. Etc . . . This scene was chuck full of cliches, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Tropes serve an important narrative purpose because a writer can rely on them to convey a message to the audience that either saves time or sets them up for something unexpected or even expected. Fire Emblem has always and will always be incredibly cliche and full of tropes. It loves tropes so much there's in-universe ones that make some unit or character discussions sound like a foreign language to people outside of or new to the fandom, talking about "Ests" and calling someone a "Camus."
What matters is if a story pulled something off well, not if it's terribly unique. A mentor dying is powerful because it forces the student to grow. Redemption in the rain is high symbolic of water washing things away + the somber atmosphere rain creates. Someone trying to get revenge against a character provides an eye-opening experience about the ripple effect of their actions. We see these things in fiction all the time because they work.
All the tropes worked like expected in this scene. Using images instead of cut scenes did make less of an impact, but more on that later.
Tl;dr: There's nothing unexpected or terribly unique about what happened. It was honestly painfully predictable, but that doesn't make it bad and is in a series that does this all of the time.
The voice acting carried because those images can't.
A major downside to this scene is that it used vague images instead of a cut scene. I get that budget and time were likely concerns, but many cut scenes from earlier in the game seem rather trivial. Did we really need that dance one? Really? I don't think so.
This was a hugely important, action heavy moment. Using one or two still images to convey everything that's happening and all those emotions, really makes it less than it could've been.
That said, the voice acting saves it. I've raved about how amazing Chris Hackeny is as Dimitri, so nothing new here. Rodrigue's and Fleche's VAs also did a fantastic job. No one oversold or undersold the emotions. Even without the cut scene, you felt what happened thanks to the skill of the actors. This scene would've been so much harder to engage with without them, if this was an older FE game where all you got was text. This is 100% one of the moments highly elevated by the decision to have a fully voiced game and choosing high caliber talent (let's not talk about Radiant Dawn's voice acting).
Questionable support timing.
One issue I had came right after the scene when I viewed Dimitri's supports. The nature of some - like his with Raphael and Alois - didn't quite line up with the character I saw in dialogue right after. I wish they staggered them a bit more or got picker about what you could get in part 1 or 2.
This isn't limited to Dimitri either. In the same support batch, I also got a Marianne B support where she still had no confidence or self-worth. And then like 10 minutes later I talk to her in the monastery and she mentions about how seeing all the death in Grondor made her value her life even more.
In the past, I've also received entirely valid opinions that Dorothea in part 2 is hard to understand because she's cherry and flirty in her supports, and morose and hates the war in her monastery stuff, making her seem inconsistent.
It's a bit jarring. It's not really an issue for characters who don't change much like Edelgard or Raphael, but even for characters with more subtle differences than Dimitri, Marianne, and Dorothea - like, say, Lorenz - you get a lot of weird stuff because of supports. I just think Dimitri's stands out because he's a main character with a really prominent, important turning point for his growth.
