monigard reads like an "edelgard x reader" fic and yknow what? i mean it in a good way. like monica's existence changed the way how edelgard ran the empire. like yeah, it doesn't change the fact she's a warmonger nor does it change the fact she instigated a war but at the very least the crimes she commits are her own. at least she's not held captive by her abusers because she doesn't think she could succeed without them

being ever the perceptive person that edelgard is, she could read the faintest hint of amusement painting across her mercenary friend's features. they've spent one too many hours together, the emperor can read shez more easily than others ( especially that byleth, the ashen demon ) . this will be the last time she indulges linhardt like this.

❝ ... oh! ❞

the realization dawns upon her. the emperor bows her head slightly, gloved fingertips coming to press against her temple in exasperation.

❝ that's what "updog" is. i see. ❞

" uhm shez. what is 'updog'?" edelgard is confused, dear sothis help her.

Shez tries her hardest not to burst out into laughter immediately. It's bad enough that Edelgard's walking right into a trap she doesn't even know about, but what's even worse is that Shez finds it absolutely hilarious. She double checks to make sure Hubert and Monica aren't nearby before leaning close to Edelgard, gearing up for the kill.

hands press against her hips, one brow raises with a hint of intrigue. edelgard attempts to maintain an unfazed facial affect but something about claude von riegan never fails to rally even the slightest of feeling within her ( annoyance? exasperation? admiration? adrestia's heir does not know. not that it matters. )

one eye opens, the almyran's gaze falls down towards his fellow house leader though he doesn't bother hopping down from his perch in the tree. both arms rest behind his head and claude sinks further against the trunk. "and? not like i was hiding." if he had been, maybe he would have put a little more effort in. "anything i can help you with, your imperialness?" there had to be a reason she was interrupting his nap.

living by pounds of gold and the sword in their hand, shez was never one to hold their tongue. some will remember shez for their bravery, other admonish them for their foolishness with how nonchalantly they've chosen to engage with adrestia's emperor. there's a twinge of a smile, amusement sparkling in their amethyst eyes.

❝ oh, me? nothing much really. what's up with you, edelgard? ❞

somehow, they keep their composure together — only a chortle escaping after they've respond to edelgard's inquiry. oh, shez does relish in these small moments of a lot more than expected.

For a moment, the emperor merely stares blankly at the mercenary, as if waiting for an explanation that she knows will not come until she asks. Shez uses such strange terminology at times--each one gets filed away in Edelgard's ( admittedly fallible, at times ) memory, no matter how ridiculous it might seem. And most of them are, decidedly, ridiculous.

A soft but decidedly beleaguered sigh escapes her as she relents, her eyes fluttering closed for a moment as she presses a hand to her forehead. "I'm almost afraid to hear the answer, but what, exactly, is updog?"

I'm only halfway through scarlet blaze but I do have some standouts!

Edelgard and Ferdinand's support stands out because of how different it feels from the three houses support they have

Edelgard and Shez's support is another fav of mine as well as Edelgard and Linhardt (for the cuteness factor lol)
