An au where it’s Poseidon x sally x amphirite in the beginning so when Sally’s pregnant she has no idea who the child belongs to

When Percy gets claimed there’s a trident representing the underwater royal family so he still stays at cabin 3

And the quest goes the same until percy gets to Olympus and Zeus asks if he’s Poseidon’s kid and he’s just like

“Kind of? I mean, I’m either his stepson or his kid so..”

So they bring Apollo to make a godly dna test and turns out he’s the child of both and Percy doesn’t give a shit he’s just trying to figure out how Apollo did that “weren’t the gods the ones with no dna?”

So now Apollo thinks he might be a godling when he’s older because instead of being 3/6 godly he’s 4/6 godly and if he lives long enough he might be a god

So yeah that’s what I thought at 3am yesterday (today?)

So, as I said recently I want to do some tests trying different things, so here’s a little comic from the chapter ‘I settle my tab’ from Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief ⚡️

(let me know if you like the idea so in case I’ll start preparing more ✨)

Percy is simply iconic in every one of his lines and I wanted to try to play with a Percy who was still at the beginning of his journey.

Furthermore, I admit that I LOVE playing with the character design of the characters following their descriptions in the books, and Poseidon is no exception! Trying to represent the aspects that Rick Riordan highlights, such as his mysterious and indecipherable side or his fisherman-in-Hawaiian-dress look, is just too much fun. :D

I’m considering whether to also post some of my sketchbook pages, because I want to share with you part of the creative process behind the way I represent the characters, which I personally find the most fun and creative part behind every illustration or drawing I work on.

Okay listen I lvoe the pjo books and series with all ym heart but.. everyone talks about them like they're perfect WHICH THEYRE NOT any problems are kinda brushed under the rug and I find thst kinda werid? Like you'll see other books and TV shows get dragged and canceled for the stuff in Riordan books and yet pjo doesn't?? So.. uhhHHHH yeah that's jsut something I noticed.

The weird relationshipd ynamics. Rick is like allergic to someone bring okay with being single or jsut aromantic like you can say Reyna but her having a crush kn Jason?? Yes she rejected Apollo but her relationship with Jason deterioted brcuz she had a 'crush' on the guy and that doesn't really amke sense to me (I can go into so much detail kn this)

AND LEO AND CALYPSO OMFG that is a toxic relationship. The age gap. The way calypso treats Leo. The fact Leo SHOULD NOT be with someone like this man hasn't dealt with his attachment and Abandonment issues like st all?!

The literal only black character in the pjo books being beckendorf.. then he dies. Then the Korean/Asian (I'm not sure sorry) character dies, Ethan. And like I understand Percy is hinted st being Hispanic (have seen many ppl talk about this dont mnow if it's common knowldhe) but it's never confirmed or added??? I know Rick fixes it later but it's still weird to me lmaoo

Rick unable to keep consistent personality. Woobigying Nico OH MY GOD NICO HE BECOMES GAY AND THSTS WHDT EVERYONE FUCKING FOCUSES ON AND HE SHOULD'VE NEVER GOTTEN WITH WILL ATLWAST NOT THAT QUICK it's not healthy. Their relationship was rushed and didn't make sense I felt like people only like ot becuz it's a gay relationship??

And oh mygods— Samirah. I am not Muslim and I am not an expert on the Nuslim religion but there is so much shitbthatbeas wrong in thst book that I even knew was incorrect and jsut weird to happen?! The AMOUNT OF TIMES HER HIJAB CAME OFF and I'm also like "yaayyyy representation" but it could've been as easy as one Google search. one.

Jason. Jason as a whole. He had the most potential out of ANYONE and personally I think he had more potential then Percy like his story is so INTERESTING and then.. Rick knocked him iut with a brick multiple times, didn't work kn his sotry or trauma at all, then KILLED HIM. Same with Ethan. I am so Vitter about these two.. HELL EVEN LEO AND FRANK.

Also the way he made Annabeth first quest (first quest SHE IS LEADING AND IS HER PROHECY) all about Percy. I was reading it and I was like "bitxh— this is Annabeth Quest?!" LIKE he it pissed me off that Annabeth was swept to rhe side as Percy's lvoe interest giving her knly enough personality and stary to make her jnteredting enough to eb loved but never delving jntk it into Mark kf Athena and even at Mark of Athena it all rounded back tk her and Percy's relationship LIKE JESUS CHRIST DO THESE MFERS PASS THE BELLDAN TEST?!

The low key incest at the beginning ricj writing that all the demigods had the same impish features at rhe start and then.. jsut.. CHSNGING IT?!

Not letting a virgin goddess who has no history of having children have.. children.. NOW you may be wondering 'but then how would we get Annabeth?'— JUST GiVE ATHENA HER FAVOURITE CHOSEN PPL LIKE SHE DID WITH ODYSSEUS let her stay childless. Jsut let her choose some children she'd like as hers wonce they're Bron and she then blesses them as her heroes, that's how she treats them any way and it also gets rid of the incest?!

Also the fact it's implied that Annabeth is only smart becuz she's a child of Athena.. Rick made a virgin goddess technically have children so he can have a smart women character and that's just.. EuGGHHhHHh JUST LET HER BE SMART IT NOT THAT HARD "Oh, no, I'm not smart because Athena chose me.. Athena chose me because I was already smart" Smacks you with common fucking sense.

Also Annabeth ALWAYS needing to eb saves and its always done by a man. OMFG AND GROVES GF DHE HAS NO PERSONALITY OUTSIDE OF BEING SOEM GUSY GF EVEN THOUGH HES GONE FOR MKNTHS AND BAREKY CONTAXTS HER?!

The whole apheodite cabin. The whole aphrodite cabin. The whole aphrodite cabin.

The fact it's clear Rick doesn't think girly girls cant be strong or into fighting or able to wield a fuckign weapon. The way he makes nearly every girly girl into a total mean bitch or ruins their characters.

WHAT GETS ME IS THAT maverick moved to yamaha and got hailed as the one who would challenge marc’s domination by the media ALL OF THEM (mat oxley wrote articles about them…. you know it was the REAL DEAL… there were articles about their parallels etc) i think that pressure really gets to maverick in a way. he looked at marc and like: everyone wants me, no, needs me to beat him. i have to beat him. and i think that he can’t see him just as another rider. for him, beating marc is a way to prove himself. and he couldn’t really see marc as, idk, a potential friend? colleague? bc for him marc is….. i wouldn’t say his enemy…. but maybe that one final test in the game….. this is why he needs to fuck marc to get it out of his system………. 😔😔😔

Three Ships:

Jason Grace and Nico di Angelo from the Heroes of Olympus: This is one of those ships that just itches the right part of my brain. Jason Grace is one of my favorite characters ever, and his quest to try and balance his need to be a leader and a protector with his desire to be allowed to be an individual is so interesting to contrast with Nico who by this point is so firmly himself. But Nico has been hurt a lot and assumes he will never be trusted, even as Jason is trying to insist that he is someone who matters to their group and is trusted. So Nico decides to test him - in a dangerous moment, holding something the rest of the group thinks is poison, Nico holds the glass to Jason and says 'How much do you trust me?" And Jason looks him dead in the eye and drinks it no hesitation. Because his own life matters less than showing Nico is worthy of trust. They are sun and shadow, sky and earth, storm and death, they are the golden boy and the outcast. It's a delicious ship and it feeds me.

Taran and Eilonwy of Llyr from The Chronicles of Prydain: They are everything to me. They are the blueprint. You have friends to lovers, you have battle couple, you have princess and the farm boy, you have two people who genuinely want to find ways to improve themselves in order to be more worthy of the other person while also finding ways to grow together. They argue constantly, but there is so much love under it that is there from the very beginning because both of them are trying to navigate having to learn how to communicate with someone else. They are my ship that I have created a thousand aus for and will test any new au I discover for how well I can fit them into it because if they don't fit I probably don't like it that much.

Fanfic rec: I wrote two oneshots but also anything by Saeriellyn is incredible

Pacifica Northwest and Dipper Pines from Gravity Falls: My friends tease me about loving a sad rich girl and they aren't wrong, so I felt kind of targeted by Pacifica's arc in season 2 of Gravity Falls because it made her so exactly my type. Particularly in the way we start to see her grow out of it. She and Dipper have each seen each other at their worst which means they don't have to worry about the shields anymore and can push each other into growing and unpacking their own traumas and bad habits. But also we start to get all these hints that she can actually relate to him at his nerdiest once she has permission to do so, and I love that he can find someone who can operate at his level while she finds someone who gives her permission to be so much less than perfect and thus actually real.

Fanfic rec: The Worst Neighbor Ever by Proseandsongs

Last Film:

The Hobbit (1977): I found this streaming and was absoltuely delighted to watch it this morning. I have so many fond memories of this movie and it did not disappoint. The animation is wild, Bilbo spends the whole movie throwing massive shade, Gollum looks like an absolute nightmare, and it's a musical the way it should be.

Currently Watching:

My roommate and I are about to finish up Mentopolis on Dimension 20 and I'm losing my mind a little bit over how this season is going. I can't wait to see how it resolves!

My writing shows at the moment are The Great British Bake Off Holiday Specials, The Christmas Cookie Challenge, and my annual rewatch of Midsomer Murders.

Currently Reading:

Nothing really because most of my books are still in boxes and I haven't had the spoons to start unpacking them while I still have that hole in my wall. I'm dipping in and out of this Rick Riordan Presents collection called The Cursed Carnival, but it's my current work book.

Currently Consuming:

I have a bunch of leftover pumpkin pie and I just had a huge slice of that along with some tea called 'Cold Comfort'.

Currently Craving:

A yule log. One of those fancy chocolate swirled sponges with cream in the middle and fancy decorations that is actually made well and that I don't have to attempt to bake myself.

Or a whole bunch of different fancy eclairs. I want to try all the eclairs.

(Yes. I am watching baking shows I want all the things.)

Greek gods don’t act like this. Also the world would’ve been destroyed 3000 years ago if the gods went to sleep.

And now my good anon, you gave me a good place to put a desclaimer… Ahem.

!Desclaimer!

The whole concept of being asleep for 3000 years is a WIP story I’m making and testing within the world of MOW.

However it is a story separate from MOW so it’s not gonna be all like this…

The main point however is that the Major gods (Except Hades) went to sleep, while some gods stayed awake. Aka the 12 Olympian gods…the rest of the gods maintained the world while they slumbered…

For example: Dionysus’ son that he had with Ariadne is the personification of grapes.

However they weren’t Major deities/weren’t well known even in modern times. (Ex: Eros who is also the god of love, yet his story is rather vague and sometimes mixed with Aphrodite, where instead of her rising upon the sea, it was Eros and in the Psyche and Eros story he’s her son, so it kinda gets confusing from there)

As for their personalities, I’m still working on that, which is why MOW is being used as a testing grounds… (Honestly he had already did when I made an original story for myself but have yet to work on the lore)

So to summarize:

1.) The Greek Mythology arc is a testing grounds for a story I’m making and currently planning that has NOTHING to do with MOW or LMK.

2.) The Major gods were the ones that went to sleep, while the rest of the gods that weren’t well known (Yes that could mean Hercules is alive- I’m not really sure about that though) maintained the world around them. (I also read somewhere that the Sea is also a personification like Gaea? Though that’s something I’m not sure of)

3.) Personalities are also still WIP, they’re not the final result, I could make Ares more of a bully if you want. I based Hermes’ personality off of ‘Epic the Musical’ because it seems to fit his personality as a trickster god.

4.) If you’re wondering about the monsters, some of them went extinct during the time the gods slept.

5.) In MOW, there are other deities maintaining the world around them, though Jade Emperor’s Mythology is mainly called ‘Chinese gods’ it’s because most of their beliefs are directed at China (I.E JTTW is a mix of Hinduism, Taoism and Buddhism) however, I have implied that they DO maintain the world around them, not just China, they’re just stronger there. (Probably in Japan as well) They can’t be called ‘Asian gods’ because some Asians don’t believe in them and have different beliefs. (Like the Philippines, which is mostly Christianity)

6.) The reason I did that is because I tried to do a Rick Riordan kinda thing, where deities of Egyptian Mythology, Greek Mythology, Roman Mythology and Norse Mythology are involved in the same world. (Like Percy Jackson meeting Kane Chronicles or Magnus Chase being related to Annabeth Chase despite Annabeth being Greek Mythology and Magnus being Norse Mythology)

So yeah….uhm if you have any thing to criticize, I’m free for it.

Appaaaaarently, according to the sun and the star synopsis, Nico and Will's relashionship is going to be tested to the core, but like, what core?!!!

I'll be honest, I had to look at that synopsis after this ask, and...

Excuse me, Rick, but what the actual fuck?

Reading this felt scarily similar to being gaslighted. Will is "the one ray of sunshine" of Nico's life? Well, I guess Hazel was a horrible sister, Reyna secretly hated him all along, and he and Percy never patched things up. Nico is shown making bonds and connections to many outcasts and overlooked creatures, including, but not limited to, Hestia, Bob, the Troglodytes, and Percy's pets. But I guess none of those relationships matter because they aren't romantic. They are not "rays of light" to Nico.

And yes, Jason dying is a tragedy, he was Nico's friend, but this synopsis treats him as his only meaningful relationship apart from his boyfriend and Bob, and honestly? Fuck that! Jason was a good friend to Nico, but he wasn't his only friend, and I'm tired of Riordan pretending he was to make his death an accessory to Nico's suffering.

"Together the two demigods can overcome any obstacle or foe. At least, that’s been the case so far..." Literally when? Nico and Will have never quested or had adventures together. They dismantled Octavian's artillery and went with Apollo to his final battle, but that's it. They have never faced any obstacle. Will just tells Nico not to do things "for his own good" and then goes along when Nico grows a spine and tells him he will do those things. They are not a team, Will is his nagging mom!

And ooh, Will probably won't make it out, the prophecy says so! I very much doubt Riordan has the guts to kill Will or even make them break up. It's fake-raising the stakes to make us care.

All in all, the "test their relationship to their core" thing ended up the thing I was the least angry about, because I agree! Test that shit! Give Will an actual character instead of a set of neat but ultimately useless powers to contrast Nico! Give him flaws that are meant to be flaws and not what is supposed to be cute gay romantic shit but ends up coming across as overtly controlling and low-key abusive.

@hondagirll Tagged me to share my top 9 books, which I don't think is a physical possibility for me to do. I love books and choosing my top 9 would be a crime. There are single series that I could choose 9 books from, so instead I am going to do the top 9 that I have read this year. It'll probably be mostly YA books - I don't tend to read too many adult books bc there's too much smut for my little asexual eyes.

Make sure you check TWs before reading any of these. Some of them dealt with some pretty heavy topics.

So out of the 63 books I have read so far this year, my favs are:

They Hate Each Other by Amanda Woody - This is a mm enemies-to-lovers fake dating contemporary book. The characters (or specifically, one of the characters) was a little over the top sometimes, but I adored them. They were both dealing with so much shit and there were some really mature topics that were offset by the humor. First sentence: "Jonah Collins is dancing on my table, and I think... yes. I think I'm about to lose my shit."

The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas: This is pitched as Percy Jackson meets The Hunger Games, and is the first book in a duology. This book is so diverse and so queer, and I need Aiden to release the second book as soon as humanly possible. I love all of the characters, even the ones who are little shits, and I can't wait to see how the series concludes. First sentence: "First, there was only Sol among a sea of stars."

The Luis Ortega Survival Club by Sonora Reyes: This was a tough choice because I read both of Sonora's books this year. I loved their first book so much that I immediately picked this one up. But I sobbed so many times reading this book, it was a little ridiculous. I think it might have been my first time reading a book with an autistic main character, which I obviously need to work on correcting. First sentence: "The driver looks at me like he knows exactly what I just did."

Sparks Fly by Birdie Lynn: If you wanted to psychoanalyze me, this is another queer enemies-to-lovers, fake dating book. But this time it takes place at a magic school and also includes soulmates trope. Do I need to say more? First sentence: "Hit me with your best shot, Pham."

Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli: I just know that Becky had a vendetta with this book, and I am absolutely thriving at the way she took the horrible way that she was treated online and channeled that into this book. This book examines the way that some people think there is a "correct" way to be queer, and absolutely challenges that. Let me catch Gretchen in a dark alley, I swear. First sentence: "I haven't quite unclicked my seat belt, but I'm getting there. Obviously."

The Sun and The Star by: Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro: What is a favorites list without something from the Riordanverse? I am so happy that we got a Nico-centric book, since he is one of my favorite characters. I also loved getting more information about Will Solace. I'm glad that Rick brought in a queer author to help make this book a reality and I really think their writing styles blended well together. First sentence: "Nico faced the worst decision of his life, and he was certain he was going to mess it up."

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler: This book was a lot. It was dark and gruesome and I spent the whole time completely horrified. It was also very real and unfortunately stands up too well to the test of time. I listened to this on audiobook and do I ever have some visceral memories of what I was doing when certain events in this book happened. I absolutely want to continue with the series, but that's something you have to be in the right frame of mind for. First sentence: "I had my recurring dream last night. I guess I should have expected it."

The Invisible Spy by Lisa McMann: This is the second book in The Forgotten Five series. I'll admit that I started this series because the author is the mother of the actress who plays Nancy Drew, but I genuinely enjoy these books. They're really solid middlegrade books and I enjoy the characters. Think Descendants meets superheroes. I like watching these kids come to terms with the fact that their parents maybe weren't the best people, and seeing how they deal with the moral quandary of having villains for parents. First sentence: "President Daniel Fuerte sat at his cluttered desk in the presidential office on the top floor of Magdalia Palace."

Skye Falling by Mia McKenzie: This book proves that picking something you've never heard of up on a whim can be a good thing. I desperately wanted an audiobook and I chose this off of my library's small list of queer books that were available at that moment. I had never heard of it before, but I adored this book. It tells the story of what happens when an almost 40 year old woman, who avoids conflict and personal relationships is faced with the very real product of selling her eggs at age 26. First sentence: "I'm lying very still on top of a hotel bed's rumpled sheets."

I remember reading an old post where you commissioned someone to draw percy and nico fighting a monster, and the artist not really being familiar with the series. In the hashtags you said “I can’t really recommend this series actually.” Why is that. I hope this doesn’t come across as interrogating you, I’m just curious. I like your blog! The name is really smart and funny.

No worries! The reason I said that is probably because I would only really recommend the PJO books to pre-middlegrade (mind blanking on term) audiences. Not to mention the books make more than a few pop culture references that are now wildly out of date, I can only imagine what a teen today might think reading about Hillary Duff, I know I would be scathing at that age. The books are aimed at a very young audience, and like other children's media there is nothing wrong with older readers/viewers enjoying the material, but that doesn't make it good (or bad!) it just makes it what it is. And PJO is kid-softened for what Riordan think is age appropriate, a surreal and illogical mix of Disney-esque slapstick and the actual violence (but never sexuality) of ancient myth. I don't agree with his choices! But I don't think he's wrong or bad for making them, I just don't agree with them

I love Nico di Angelo mostly because he's an accident. Riordan fell over backwards into a great character arc which he then pretty much ruined the moment he canonized it (always Percico forever). Riordan's writing tics grated on me while I was reading the books, which I only picked up because I thought maybe I could be a YA author and figured I should be testing out the big names in the field

So. There is nothing wrong with Rick Riordan. Whatever writing he's done that's 'problematic' is countered by his dedication toward being a champion for all kids, especially the marginalized ones whether from disablity, race, gender, sexuality, etc... In light of certain boy wizard authors and their descent into TERFdom, the contrast is wildly undeniable! He makes missteps, but he's also visibly doing his best and that's also undeniable better than many of his hyper-succesful peers.

But I won't be recommending the books to anyone over the age of 12

The school years in Percy Jackson don't add up. (has like very minor tower of nero spoilers abt what percy and annabeth are up to)

He turns eighteen in TOA

He turns seventeen in HOO

he turns sixteen in TLO

he turns fifteen in BOTL (end)

he turns fourteen in SOM (end)

he turns thirteen in TLT (end)

he turns twelve before killing mrs. dodds

This means that if TLT is set in 2005, Percy's should've been born in 1992, and not 1993 like literally everyone including official sources say (please do the math right I'm begging you). But, according to this paragraph:

Percy was twelve years old a few months after Yancy. This makes sense if Percy wrote this before his birthday in August, but the use of the word few instead of couple (considering he left in late may/early june) is strange. But ok, this might just be a misunderstanding, it doesn't really matter. What matter is this paragraph:

Why? Because Percy should've been in Yancy during the seventh grade.

again considering Percy as being born in 1992 and turning 18/graduating around toa 5 bc it happened two years after tlo, we have the following scenario

pre tlo 04-05 seventh grade

tlo-som 05-06 eighth grade

som-botl 06-07 ninth grade

botl-tlo 07-08 tenth grade

tlo-hoo 08-09 eleventh grade (that he didn't actually have)

hoo-toa 09-10 twelfth grade

if he was on sixth grade during yancy, he would still have a year left before graduating in toa 5. this paragraph from BOTL is also an issue:

If he was in ninth grade after botl, he would've graduated high school in three years, which doesn't make sense (also im not from USA but why would you have an orientation in june when the school starts in august??? anyways)

I might not be making sense bc it's one thirty am, but either one of the books had a time-skip of over one year and I somehow missed it (doubt it bc I read this series like three plus times) OR rick riordan just like casually skipped a whole year but everyone knows he's bad with timelines (as exemplified by that whole dragon ants fourth of july side story that literally can't be really placed anywhere in the series and Nico's age and birth fluctuating throughout the books) so yeah not unexpected I just like to realize stuff

also mostly unrelated question but how tf did Annabeth get into UCLA? she had absolutely no ECs (it's not like she could put "redesigned the mt. olympus" in her application), probably missed a good part of sophomore and junior year (bc of titan war and looking for percy), and there's probably more stuff that I can't think of right now bc I'm tired and my brain is not working. But also how would she have the time to take standardized tests and advanced classes? How would she have been able to avoid any disciplinary actions considering monsters and stuff? How tf was she able to maintain a good enough GPA? nothing makes sense

pjo is full of random nonsense and I love to talk about it but it's two am and I have to sleep so goodnight. if you come up with any answers regarding annabeth pls tell me. that's it.

Review: The Tower of Nero

Synopsis:

With the help on the inside from Lu, Meg’s old guard, and friend, the team is joined by Nico, Will, and Rachel to defeat Nero. As all psychopathic fathers do, Nero had a plan: get Meg and Apollo to surrender otherwise he would blow up the entire state of New York, including Camp Half-Blood. With the prophecy almost fulfilled, Apollo is at his final test to defeat Nero and prove that he should be a god again or die as a moral. With more than just his life at stake, Apollo is tested to the fullest of his humanity with this action pack conclusion that leaves you an emotional ending you would not want to miss.

Thoughts:

Rick Riordan has done it again, ending off another series with a banger of an ending. As someone who has not always enjoyed this series, Riordan definitely pays attention to that, making this novel wrap everything up in a nice bow, while making everything evident. The death of Jason, which at the time I saw as a complete cop-out, begins to make sense in this novel, as Riordan keeps the death of Jason close to Apollo, to help remind him of his humanity, and why these demigod battles are worth fighting for. Which is part of Riordan writing that this book does better than the others - the humanity of it. Finally, as it “do or die time”, Riordan has Apollo expressing several human emotions and understands the complexity of humanity, as his time on earth is running to an end. Meg, whom we have seen grow confident, is trusted back under Nero’s thumb, allowing us to see if these past few months made her grow, or is she still scared of Nero and what ‘the Beast’ can do. With flowing writing that’s easy to follow, Riordan made this book take a leisurely stroll, in the beginning, to race to the action pack scenes in the middle, to give us a nice river-side walk of an ending to a peaceful day. Wearing Riordan really scored points with me - a fantastic ending. A bittersweet one that allows you to feel happy but sad at the same time, as the Trials of Apollo did end, Riordan allows a glimpse into the lives of all the characters we have loved throughout this series and previous ones, allowing you to know all is well in Riordan’s greek world - until he writes another one. Overall, this book does justice to the series, and to the greek world, Riordan created, with Apollo finally understanding humanity, Meg finding a home of her own, and everyone gets what they deserve.
