if someone with psychosis or schizophrenia has asked you to not reality check them (specifically when the episode does not cause them to harm themself / make them harm others) — don't do it. there can be a variety of reasons as to why they don't want you to, one of mine being it will distress me more than just believing whatever it is to be real.
instead, try working with them through the episode, however long it may be, until they can safely come to the conclusion it wasn't real themselves.
being reality checked without a warrant can, in my personal experience, make the person act aggressively and/or make the episode worse/scary.
———
( shorter ver for people who struggle with reading) ;
please don't reality check unless asked or if the person is becoming a danger for themselves or others, because it can make it worse. simply respect their request please !!
note: sorry if i worded anything badly, its 5am and i havent slept well!! if you think i should have worded something better / should change some tags, please tell me!!

maybe worth mentioning since you mentioned how funfred is super neurodivergent coded is that psychosis and schizospectrum disorders have a lot in common with autism!!
Tumblr media
👆🏻 small graph i found... you may notice also that psychosis is listed as moreso of a symptom/trait than its own Thing-- bc that's the case!! psychosis is moreso of a smaller part of a larger disorder or mental illness or a temporary thing brought on by stress than its own thing.
Tumblr media
graph... 2!!
just sort of based on the very surface-level understanding i have of your funfred i don't Think i read anywhere he experiences hallucinations? but that is not necessarily a dealbreaker!!
hallucinations also don't have to be especially debilitating either-- just speaking from personal experience, i experience near constant auditory hallucinations but it's nothing like, horror movie level shit, my mind basically just repeats sounds back at me constantly forever. examples of that being i'll hear birds tweeting at night or hear a car alarm for like an hour after it goes off; i barely ever have visual hallucinations 🤷🏻 delusions don't necessarily have to be crazy either-- for example my worst one i can never seem to get past is a delusion that i can "jinx" things where if i hope for something to happen if i say it will for sure that's just a fun way to jinx it and make it not happen and all is horrible now GLDMFMDMD
i'm totally rambling in your inbox which is going to bring me to my last point before i go on for a century which is that schizospec disorders and autism/adhd are a common comorbidity-- nearly every person ik on the schizospectrum or who experiences psychosis in some form also has autism 💀 so they tend to come hand in hand; it would make sense for funfred to have signs of both! 🤷🏻
My eyes are sparkling anime-style at this information... FUNFRED AUTISTIC FOR REAL!
I need to read all this over a few more times to fully understand it all, but thank you so much for infodumping! This is super-fascinating stuff!

It would be great if characters experiencing psychosis or other derealization symptoms would be portrayed more respectfully and kindly in media and characters. It would be great if it wasn't always to make the character seem threatening, scary or "deranged". As someone who experiences unreality due to trauma often, it's actually much more scary to be on the receiving end of it. I'm not the only one in our family who's struggled with this, and it's more heartbreaking to witness than anything. It's heartbreaking having to see a loved one demonized by their peers and the rest of our extended family bc of psychotic symptoms and hallucinations. To be treated like a rabid animal or inherently untrustworthy
Also for the uninitiated, PSYCHOPATH IS NOT A THING. SOCIOPATH IS NOT A THING. PSYCHOSIS MEANS A STATE IN WHICH THE PERSON EXPERIENCING IT CANNOT DIFFERENTIATE WHAT'S REAL AND WHAT ISN'T. IT CAN INCLUDE HALLUCINATIONS, FALSE BELIEFS AND PARANOIA. IT DOES NOT MAKE SOMEONE VIOLENT OR DANGEROUS, OR MORE PRONE TO HURTING PEOPLE.
This applies to so many other "less popular" mental illnesses and disorders and I'd just love it if it was portrayed as more normal in media and not always given to violent or antagonistic characters. Or to make it seem like someone is "Kooky" and "losing it". If you're explaining shitty behavior on mental illness symptoms that's pretty damn insulting to mentally ill people. Don't fucking interact if you still label people psychos or think mental illness makes people abuse others.
On an additional note, it'd also be good if people with anger issues, regardless of if they stem from mental illness or not, would be portrayed kindly and respectfully
(Neurodivergent (<-includes schizophrenia, psychosis and other cluster b disorders) people are welcome to add on or correct me on the terminology used, neurotypicals and everyone else stay respectful, this isn't about you)

There is a complicated and intertwined relationship between autism and schizophrenia, as well as ongoing struggles with how we define experiences with psychosis in other disorders and circumstances outside of schizophrenia, and I wish people were less afraid of both of them, and more willing to understand all of the above [autism, schizophrenia, psychosis].
I think people are also less aware of the possible comorbidity between autism and psychosis, or how autism as a diagnosis was initially linked to (now outdated concepts for) schizophrenia. It is also difficult to know the exact numbers, regardless, as often the communication difficulties present in autism, or the more subtle aspects of psychosis, or the cultural notions around either can make the actual categorization of it hard to quantify.
Psychosis is also present in schizoaffective, bipolar disorder, and several personality disorders (I know for a fact borderline personality disorder can present with psychosis, for example).
I wish I was better at putting my thoughts to words, but I'm reflecting also on how all of these discussions are generally within a certain realm of psychiatry anyway, and what we define as psychosis--as disconnect from reality--is complicated by a drive to pathologize complex experiences. Often times, "disconnect from reality" can also be applied to groups or individuals who are experiencing a very strong connection to reality, that works against other purposes--like the history with labeling Black civil rights activists with it (especially with labels implying violence and paranoia) for speaking up about oppression.
Ugh, I wish I could keep topics in a streamlined manner, but everything is interconnected, so it's difficult.
I promise this is here because of The Locked Tomb. I was reflecting on Harrowhark's experiences with psychosis--which are irrefutable and acknowledged. She has psychosis and she's being haunted and there's a lot of weird shit happening around her, and that means something to me anyway, because I am also psychotic and have experiences that have made it very confusing and distressing to tell reality and psychosis apart (ie, being convinced I'm not experiencing something, when I am, as a means to control me and evade consequences, with me being willing to believe it because I already have a disconnect from reality, then learning that it was a purposeful exploitation of my symptoms).
I don't personally think it's obscure at all that she has psychosis. And I think it would be more difficult to be sure if she's autistic--sensory processing issues, emotional disconnect, etc can easily be seen in schizophrenia; she is also deeply traumatized and traumatized from a very young age making it hard to discern if that would correlate to social issues. Social issues that may also be culturally influenced anyway (of course, one could perceive the entire Ninth House of being isolated and small enough to essentially be built off a handful of groups that had autism and then were all mostly fine with one another and simply developed all deeper into certain habits and structure, obfuscating larger social issues they may have with the other Houses).
Social isolation and trauma, by the way, can lead to people having similar symptoms to autism, but there's a lot of complicated discussions on what that even means for how they meet the criteria, or what the criteria would mean, or how useful it would be for certain circumstances. Ultimately, autism is recognized as a developmental disorder relating to social and communicative difficulties. There are still a myriad of theories about what that even truly entails.
I view Harrow as autistic, because I personally believe she probably would, in a general environment, still not have the intuitive social sense that allistics have, and that it is not solely linked to her psychosis. I also view Harrowhark as schizophrenic, but am unsure how mood may correlate or interact with her psychosis (which would technically change how it would be categorized). I saw confirmation from Muir that Harrow would benefit greatly from antipsychotics and I saw a tweet stating schizophrenia was confirmed, but it has already been proven that people will "summarize" statements in very general ways, and I've been unable to get the actual source (a video of the statements summarized).

hey btw if any of you ai art freaks have any respect for humans you should probably tag that shit as unreality because of how genuinely disturbing they get and how horrible they can be for someone with psychotic symptoms. the point of this post isnt to hate on ai art (despite the fact i hate ai art and its stealing but i digress), its to save my fellow psychotic people from episodes of derealization and depersonalization and hallucinations and delusions because you fuckers cant fucking tag an image that will genuinely make me want to melt into a mental puddle. tag your fucking shit correctly. and dont come at me with that "well if you dont like it dont search for it" type bullshit im literally fucking asking you to tag it correctly so i DONT FIND IT WHEN I SEARCH FOR NORMAL THINGS btw? not tagging your shit correctly is ableist! anyways i got a little heated im pissed off about that have a wonderful day and tag your shit correctly

last night i had a mix of tinnitus and sleep deprivation induced auditory hallucinations which was basically just like. literal microphone feedback. and i think it was triggered by me testing my microphone yesterday bc the feedback was awful but yeah i was lying awake and all i could hear was extremely loud microphone feedback in my brain i'm so glad it's over 😭
#worst hallucination i've ever had#like usually if i'm bad enough to get hallucinations it's just like murmuring/whispering but i can tell it's not real#worst ones i've had before is like screaming and that's only if i'm rlly sleep deprived. sometimes knocking on my door too but#it's never too bad yk. but the mic feedback hallucination was unbearable 😭#but also i've had olfactory hallucinations where i smell cigarette smoke#ik it's definitely a hallucination bc no one in my family smokes and it only lasts a minute#ykw typing this out i'm starting to think maybe this isn't normal.#i don't think i'm schizophrenic or anything? this isn't that common and it's usually triggered by sleep deprivation or stress#but i did start having delusions the other day where i fully believed everyone was plotting against me and trying to upset me#and i have had extreme paranoia/paranoid episodes in the past but it's been a lotttttt better this year so idc if that's related#but idk if these things are normal to an extent or if i have some kind of psychotic disorder but whatever it's not affecting me that bad so#like. it's not having a big impact it's just scary when it happens. i have like anxiety n shit so idk if i'm just prone to being paranoid#anyway if anyone knows abt these things pls tell me if i'm normal or not 😁#i'm 99% sure it's not schizophrenia or anything i just want someone's opinion bc idk how normal hallucinations are ☹#but it's typically if i'm like. stressed out to the point of panic attacks or if i'm rlly sleep deprived. so it might be normal ish#ask to tag#< sorry ik discussion of this stuff could potentially be distressing but idk how to tw tag it :(

hesitant to post this bc it will not be well phrased and I feel liable to be misinterpreted here but it's been irking me lately to see how often ppl r like "unipolar depression and anxiety are destigmatized disorders" on this website as if if the best case scenario irl you'll get "oooh haha yeah the world sucks lol totally" if you share that u have a depressive/anxiety disorder and then have ppl get so so scared forever when u actually express symptoms of those disorders. it rlly feels like we're taking statements like "oh yeah im so ocd i love organizing things by color" and interpreting that as acceptance and accommodation now.

can refusing to take your medication count as disregarding your own safety? if so, why?
Yes, it can be in certain circumstances. Medication, be that life-saving ones such as anti-seizure, heart medication, antidepressants, etc or quality of life ones like anxiety relief or prescribed supplements are all considered necessities, and denying yourself access to a necessity is considered disrespecting and/or disregarding your own safety.
However, if your reason for refusing your meds (massive trigger warning for ppl with paranoia, schizophrenia, ocd, etc!!)
has more to do with distrust of the medication, paranoia about what's in it, or feeling like it doesn't alleviate your symptoms, then it would not be considered disregarding your safety imo. I would only consider it that if you know that the medication helps you, remember it, and still don't take it/refuse it if reminded, as otherwise it would be more similar to symptoms of another disorder such as contamination OCD or delusions from one of various disorders, etc etc.
If you are refusing the medication despite being made aware that you act in ways that are dangerous for yourself without the medication (common in bipolar medications, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, etc), that would also count as disregarding/disrespecting your own safety.
If you are refusing the medication because you don't feel you need help, are made aware that you act in ways that are harmful or hurtful to someone else in your life without the medication (also common in bipolar medications, mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, etc), that would be disregarding/disrespecting someone else's rights and/or safety depending on how exactly you react without the medication.
All of these are common presentations of ASPD symptoms in regard to medications.

All the posts going around about imaginary friends keeps making me nostalgically reminisce about mine and then I remember that they were in fact untreated childhood onset schizophrenia and that their absence was one of the most important steps for my mental health and ability to function in society.
...
Still kinda miss em sometimes though tbh,

I'd like to hear ADHD + OCD people's thoughts on this because I often think constantly about the acronyms of a neurodivergent diagnosis in relation to Autism. ASD refers to Autism Spectrum Disorder and is less pronounced as compared to solely 'Autism' or even 'Asbergers', both with a dauntingly capital 'A'. While these groups both share their struggles, there's something more casual in the language of an acronymed diagnosis, and perhaps a bit more culturally articulated. ADHD is abbreviated for Attention Deficet Hyperactive Disorder. Okay, clear cut. Understood. We know what attention means. What deficet means. What hyperactive and disorder means. As a neurotypical or allistic person, you at least have a base-line understanding of an ADHD person's disorder. It's a similar case with OCD - Obssesive Compulsive Disorder.
But Autism? What the hell does that mean? How else can you use Autism in a sentence other than to discuss or degrade the disorder? People with ADHD or OCD say they "have" ADHD or OCD, but Autism is something you "are". I am Autistic. On a linguistic level, this is another reason why Autism is so misunderstood because, unlike other disorders, we don't understand it by its symptoms or idiocyncrasises, so it becomes this terrifying, unpredictable monster in neurotypical minds.
What is Autism? What can it be?

actually. that post about how its important to have weird kinky queer friends. i think the same is true of really every type of ostracized person but in particular i wanna point it out wrt mentally ill people.
if you watch a movie villainizing DID or schizophrenia or something, and you think, "hey, this seems sort of like its based on what my friend has and theyre just a chill person, why are they making my friends condition seem threatening?" thats good.
if you see someone use narcissist as a synonym for abuser and you think, "what, no, im friends with someone who has NPD and i know theyre a kind person, this isnt true at all," thats good.
if you hear politicians try to frame addicts as violent criminals who should be locked up and you think "no, my buddy sam is just sick, their withdrawals are really painful and they dont have a good support system, they shouldnt be locked up for that," thats good.
being able to counter ableist rhetoric with "i know from experience thats not how these people are" is a good thing. like yeah obviously dont make friends with mentally ill people just for brownie points but also try to make the conscious effort to be open to friendship with people who have stigmatized mental health issues. and maybe even more importantly, be someone who makes it clear to others that youre safe to be open about these things with, because chances are youre ALREADY friends with mentally ill people even if you dont realize it, because a lot of us with more demonized conditions try to hide those conditions out of fear, and it helps a lot to know our friends are allies - and then we might feel safe discussing our experiences, IF we want to, and in turn that can help you better understand the realities and diversities of our situations and be less susceptible to ableist rhetoric.

i keep seeing it and i accidentally deleted my old post but oh my fucking god PLEASE STOP USING SCHIZOPHRENIA TO MEAN PSYCHOSIS. PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS IS A TERM. I AM NOT BEING NICE ABOUT IT THIS TIME. ALL PSYCHOTIC PEOPLE ARE HARMED BY SANEISM AND BY PRETENDING ITS JUST SCHIZOPHRENICS YOU EXCLUDE SO MANY PEOPLE FROM TALKING ABOUT THEIR OPRESSION AND EXPERIENCES. fucking hell. im actually so pissed off about this it is counterproductive to exclude so many psychotic people from discussions about psychotic experiences. especially when the saneism you're responding to is specifically about psychosis, not just schizophrenia. god im so pissed

we know due to conducted studies on lives experiences that psychotic symptoms and disorders prevent differently based on the culture and society a person lives in.
i'm so tired of seeing "schizophrenia would still exist under communism you idiots" when discussing the impact of mental health under capitalism. it's always brought up.
while psychosis will always exist schizophrenic people raised in hyper-capitalist, individualist societies have a more terrifying experience with the condition. their voices and delusions are more violent. they are rejected by their peers and end up homeless because they can't function in the only environment capitalism cares about--a work environment.
i've been in and out of treatment for psychosjs for years now and nothing helped me more than loved ones accepting me. for accepting that i'll never function the same as them and that's okay. for making sure i'm in a safe environment when in a delusional state.
so please consider it's not just things like depression that can be better or worse based on your environment.
