DID ALTER EXPLAINS: TYPES OF CDDs
Tumblr media
so, what are CDDs? complex dissociative disorders are dissociative disorders that occur with the presence of "alternate self states" - alters. this includes DID, OSDD1, P-DID & some presentations of UDD. in this post, i will cover quick overviews regarding the key differences between these complex dissociative disorders.
Tumblr media
DID - DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER
likely the most well-known complex dissociative disorder, DID is classified by:
the existence of two or more distinct identity states (as said before, i will be referring to these as "alters") accompanied by changes in behaviour, memory & thinking.
dissociative amnesia, which includes both partial & complete episodes of memory loss.
DPDR that affects daily life & functioning.
the symptoms must not be caused by substance use or another medical condition, & must not be part of normal cultural or religious practices.
this is a summary of the diagnostic criteria for DID¹, however there may be many other features present as well. common phenomena include: alters taking control of the patient's body in turns, the existence of an "internal world", as well as comorbid C-PTSD symptoms (flashbacks, hypervigilance, etc).
NOTE: DID with polyfragmentation (sometimes called complex DID) will be discussed in a later post.
Tumblr media
OSDD1 - OTHERWISE SPECIFIED DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER (TYPE 1)
OSDD1 as a diagnosis - previously called DDNOS (dissociative disorder not otherwise specified) - is given to patients who nearly fit the diagnostic criteria for DID, however they lack one of the criteria needed to make a DID diagnosis.
OSDD1, therefore, is a spectrum of experiences².
in the online CDD community, you may hear talk of two OSDD1 subtypes: OSDD1-a & OSDD1-b. these are community terms that describe two of the most common OSDD1 presentations. take note, not all OSDD1 cases will fit neatly into either of these subtypes, but many still find these labels important when describing their experiences. here is a short overview:
OSDD1-a: the lacking criterion comes in where i mentioned "distinct identity states". in OSDD1-a patients, their alters are separated by the amnesia barriers present in DID, however the individual alters are often very similar in identity. these alters tend to seem more like "modes" of the same person, rather than distinct individuals. an example would be a patient named sarah, whose alters could perhaps be describes as "angry sarah", "childlike sarah" & "happy sarah".
OSDD1-b: the lacking criterion here is the presence of amnesia. those with OSDD1-b do not experience dissociative amnesia.
Tumblr media
P-DID - PARTIAL DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER
P-DID is quite different compared to other complex dissociative disorders in terms of how it presents! the disorder is (typically) classified as such:
there are no episodes of amnesia.
one identity state exists as the "dominant" consciousness.
the dominant identity is intruded upon by 1 or more non-dominant self states, who do not recurrently take full control of the patient's consciousness & body (however episodes thereof may occur occasionally).
P-DID³ is under-researched compared to DID & even OSDD1.
Tumblr media
UDD - UNSPECIFIED DISSOCIATIVE DISORDER
the diagnosis of UDD is given to those whose symptoms do not neatly fit into the criteria of another dissociative disorder⁴, including complex dissociative disorders.
as such, those with UDD may or may not note the presence of alters. it will all depend on the individual experience of patients with UDD.
this diagnosis may also be made in emergencies, or when a clinician is not able to gather enough information to diagnose a more specified CDD/DD.
Tumblr media
these are all of the recognised types of complex dissociative disorders!
i hope i was able to set out this information in a manner that makes sense to those both within the online CDD community, & those new to it. thank you for taking this time to educate yourself on these dissociative disorders! if you have any questions, my askbox is open.

Does Mike still has DID in this AU?
yep, but only Chester, Svetlana and Manitoba are in his system
(not trying to ignore/dismiss Vito and Mal here, its just I believe that some Very Fucked Up things had to happen to Mike for them to exist, I also believe that said things would have had to happened a little later in his life, say like late childhood/early teens, and keep in mind in this au Mike was only four when he got adopted, and most likely developed only those three alters from constantly going through foster homes)

The Continuum of Dissociation
Tumblr media
[Image description:
An infographic describing the continuum of dissociation and the theory of structural dissociation. From left to right (more integrated parts to less integrated parts), are:
Altered states - Altered states of consciousness: Includes things like daydreaming, normal absorption, 'highway hypnosis', flow states, meditative practices, and imaginary play
Primary dissociation - PTSD / single incident trauma: Where a person has what can be described as a 'Going on with normal life' part that does daily life, as well as a 'Trauma part' that holds the experience of trauma
Secondary dissociation - C-PTSD / complex trauma: Where a person has more than one 'Going on with normal life' part as well as multiple trauma parts that often are caught in defensive actions and patterns of trauma
Dissociative disorders - OSDD / UDD: Other specified and unspecified dissociative disorders are diagnoses given when a person does not meet the full criteria for a specific dissociative disorder
Tertiary dissociation - DID / polyfragmented DID: Characterised by two or more distinct personality states, and in the case of polyfragmented DID, a person has a large number of 'alters' or identities, each with their own sense of self
Outside of the parts model, but still within dissociation, are:
Dissociative amnesia: Where a person cannot remember important information about their life (more than ordinary forgetfulness)
Depersonalisation & derealisation: Where a person experiences feelings of detachment from their body or cognitions, including a disconnect from their self or environment

Tumblr media
[Image description:
An infographic describing primary structural dissociation.
In primary structural dissociation, there is a 'Going on with normal life part', which avoids traumatic reminders to function in normal life goals. Daily life functions include rest, play, socialising, relationships, and intimacy.
There is also a trauma part, which is engaged in survival / animal defences and is often in hyper- or hypoarousal. Trauma responses (defences) are: fight, flight, freeze, submit, and attach.

In secondary structural dissociation, there is a 'Going on with normal life part', which avoids traumatic reminders to function in normal life goals.
There are also multiple trauma parts, which are engaged in survival / animal defences and is often in hyper- or hypoarousal. Trauma responses (defences) are: fight, flight, freeze, submit, and attach.

An infographic describing tertiary structural dissociation. It gives an example of a system, the collection of all alters (parts) within a person.
In tertiary structural dissociation, there are multiple 'Going on with normal life parts', one or more of which may be called the 'host(s)', who are engaged in daily life. Examples of going on with normal life parts are a worker alter, a caregiver alter, and a partner alter.
There are also multiple trauma parts, which are alters engaged in survival defences. Examples of trauma parts are a gatekeeper alter (who decides who fronts), fight alters (e.g. Ann, a 24 year old primar protector part, and Don, a 30 year old persecutor part), flight alters (e.g. Sally, an 8 year old trauma holder), freeze alters (e.g. Marcus, a 10 year old trauma holder), submit alters (e.g. Pia, an 18 year old trauma holder), and attach alters (may be called 'littles', e.g. Lily, a 4 year old and Jack, a 6 year old, both trauma holders).

One of the coolest things my friend Kris said, "A good headcanon differs from the canon knowingly, not out of wilfull ignorance".
Like, there is a big difference between being corrected (not always for an indisputable reason, but the intention matters) and being creatively policed! When someone shares a headcanon and you know the canon bit that contradicts it, just say it! Either they could reconsider their idea with the new information or say "yeah cool but I prefer to write my own thing, not to be 100% accurate to the canon" which are both valid. Because, the latter one knowingly differs from the canon!
But like, apparently in the eyes of some people, being informed on what was missed equals baiting hostility, policing creativity or whatnot? Like, yet again, if someone gets straight up angry and vindictive at being reminded that they are in the fandom, for something with pre-existing information, then it loops back to the question of why they are in a fandom and not doing their own original project to begin with! I can't find any other reasoning for admitting you do not want to even know canon and only here to take basic surface bits to make your own thing besides the fact that pre-existing fanbase just will engage more willingly even with canon divergent portrayals, stories and just AUs!
But like... you can't be in a fandom while expecting to never have any discussion with other fans about this story and characters! Being told that you are wrong and being told that you are wrong for BEING wrong are two whole different things, and mentality of fans not being allowed to say anything besides agreement, when it is about pre-existing media, is straight up lame and not what fandoms are about. Not everyone who points what is missing a petty redditor that hates headcanons; most of the "well actualies" come from the place of love for both canon and headcanons! This is the case of "before you break the rules you need to know them", but people that tell what rules are are anything but wrong, hostile or immature. People that say "you come into my house and maliciously ruin my fun" when they hear about those rules, however?
Again: a good headcanon differs from the canon knowingly, not out of wilfull ignorance.

I've been affectionately calling this "the au I'm not writing" for a while now. Then I accidentally wrote 20k words for it. So I guess I can't call it that anymore (I still do though). So here's some concept art for an AU that's been bouncing around my head for a while which I guess we can call the bruce-never-became-batman-and-so-jason-and-babs-end-up-as-gotham's-first-vigilantes-and-slowly-acquire-more-friends AU. Or... we can just call it "You were never alone"

DID ALTER EXPLAINS: DISSOCIATION
Tumblr media
what is dissociation? dissociation is a symptom experienced by many. it is especially common in those with C-PTSD, major depressive disorder + related mood disorders, borderline personality disorder, dissociative disorders, & complex dissociative disorders. today, we will break down what dissociation is & isn't, as well as techniques for coping with dissociative symptoms.
Tumblr media
DISSOCIATION EXPLAINED
dissociation is described as the mental process wherein a person disconnects from their own thoughts, feelings, memories, sense of identity &/or the world around them¹.
this symptom is most often formed as a maladaptive coping mechanism to protect the brain from traumas.
patients may report feeling unreal, "floaty" or otherwise lacking the ability to ground themself & be present in the moment. there are multiple aspects to dissociation:
DEPERSONALISATION - feelings that one is seeing one's thoughts, feelings, or body or parts of one's body from a distance². you may feel that you are unreal.
DEREALISATION - feelings that the external world is alien, distant, distorted or falsified³. you may feel that the world is unreal.
IDENTITY CONFUSION - one may lose one's sense of identity, resulting in feeling as if one exists on "autopilot", with no personality or consciousness of one's own.
AMNESIA - partial or complete memory loss may accompany episodes of more severe dissociation.
Tumblr media
DISSOCIATION - THE MYTHS
dissociation is NOT a conscious choice. yes, a patient may refuse to use grounding techniques, resulting in worse dissociative symptoms; however dissociation as a trauma response is often a subconscious action⁴.
dissociation =/= daydreaming.
dissociation & dissociative disorders are not that rare⁵. their prevalence rate differs throughout the world, but the rate of diagnosis for dissociative disorders in the US ranges from 13-20%.
medication will not cure dissociation⁵. dissociation can only be treated through therapy, i.e. CBT, DBT & psychodynamic psychotherapy.
everyone will experience dissociation slightly differently!
Tumblr media
GROUNDING TECHNIQUES FOR DISSOCIATIVE EPISODES
below are a handful of websites & resources with tips to cope with severe dissociation. different techniques will work for different patients, however the most common method for grounding yourself often aims to distract, centre & calm the dissociated person. as dissociation is often a response to trauma or other stressors, these coping strategies place a focus on bringing the patient down from that fight-or-flight mode.
Tumblr media
this has been a quick summary of the complex experience that is dissociation!
i hope that these resources may help those who are struggling with severe dissociation to decrease the distress these symptoms are causing them. understanding what dissociation is from a logical standpoint can help one pinpoint, diagnose & treat the symptoms, which may lead to a better quality of life.

One thing I don't understand is, in the second logbook the writer says that the terris prophecies had changed to fit Alendi long before Rashek took the power from the well of ascension, then it changes again to fit Vin in hoa. So when Sazed is comparing notes with the kandra, wouldn't they both have the wrong prophecies?

Ok, here is the Ophiuchi Fleet/Crew! My alien oc’s for @maudiemoods alien au!
Rasal is the positive and cheerful person of the group, his power basically being a flash bomb, but he can control the brightness, so he can either be a homing beacon, distress signal, a night light, or a living glow stick. He is a little dumb, but he has a good heart and would do just about anything for his crew. He has poor patience and terrible memory, but luckily Sabik is there to help him out. Rasal is quick to form attachments to people and gets very sad about leaving a planet and all the friends that he had made. At least he’s got his crew with him though! That is his main comfort, knowing that his crew will never leave him behind. However, this also makes him grow a hero complex, always going out of his way and even endangering himself to save his crew mates. He would never forgive himself if one of his crew mates died under his watch, whether he could have prevented it or not. But at the end of the day, as long as his crew is safe, he will be the happiest creature in the entire universe.
Sabik is the most manipulative of the group. He has no qualms about lying to get his way and does what he has to to survive. However, they would never do anything that wasn’t in the best interest for their crew. He grew up on the streets and still likes to partake in a little shop lifting here and there, but he mostly steals stuff for Omi in hopes to impress her. They are an excellent strategist and can has the second best poker face on the ship, but he also has a slight anger issue and is terrible at intimacy or anything touchy-feely or emotional. Sabi’s power is the Siren Call, basically verbal Hypnosis. Even a whisper can convince someone to do as they ask, but he prefers not to use this. Mainly for the fun and challenge, but he also hates using his power due to the intense headaches and temporary voice loss.
Cebal is the gentle giant of the crew. He is unusually big and bulky, but don’t ask him about it. He is a selective mute and has his own collection of terrariums in his ship quarters. He cares deeply about all life on all planets, and likes to collect tiny trinkets from all the planets they visit. He is kind and gentle in everything they do and finds it difficult to harm others, even when the crew is in danger. His power is controlling plant life, which admittedly you wouldn’t guess by looking at them. They mainly just grow flowers to decorate the ship and give as gifts to everyone. They have severe social anxiety, and he’s the most introverted of them all, rivaled only by Nu.
Marfik is the prankster of the ship. She has boundless energy and is the most active of them all, always scouting ahead and finding places to settle down when they explore a planet. Their power is unnatural speed, and they love to use it to trick the others. They know just how to cheer up the others, always getting to make them laugh and smile. They even got Nu to smile one time, but it might’ve been a trick of the light. She has a very very high metabolism so they’re always hungry despite not needing to eat for several days. Sometimes they ask Cebal to grow fruit from other planets just so they can eat it and stave off the hunger. Their favorite prank victim is Sabik, mainly just because it’s easy to get him riled up. The reason their nickname is Murphy is because everyone started calling them Marfi, and eventually it just blended into Murfi/Murphy.
Omi is tired 24/7. No nonsense, and all common sense. She is a bit stressed out about everything, but uses her studies to block out any negative or unwanted feelings that arise. She is the brain cell holder of the ship and 95% of everyone’s self control. She has the best poker face, and has become apathetic to most things. Sometimes Sabik gives her gifts that he says he bought, but she knows they are stolen. She has, however, grown a soft spot for him. Her power is telekinesis, but she uses it sparingly. Her power gives her major headaches, but she will do what she must to help the crew. She has grown up with the mindset that if she can’t be of use to someone, then she was useless over all and unwanted. She cares about her crew mates and wants to be wanted and useful to them, so she has a habit of over exerting herself for them.
Nu is…Nu. They crawl around the ship and fix any damage from the journey, Murphy’s pranks, Sabi’ temper, or Attacks from other ships. Most of the time, they can’t be found on purpose. You either find them on accident, or when they want to be found. Sometimes the crew finds them crawling in the vents, or in a dark corner of the ship while repairing something only to have them spin their head at a 180 angle and stare right into their eyes. On the rare occasion, they can be found ravaging the fridge at the dead of sleeping hours for their rations. Despite their cryptid and creepy behavior, they actually really care about their crew mates, which is why they work so hard to make sure nothing is wrong with the ship. Their power is being able to walk on any surface. They use this power to walk on the wall or ceilings, and also stick to the side of the ship when doing external repairs. They sometimes help Murphy out with pranks to spook other crew mates. Their best friend is Cebal, sometimes just sitting next to him and reading a book in comfortable silence as he takes care of his terrariums.
