(3.) Grand col Marie-Stuart en dentelle Renaissance. (Modèle de Mme Garcia, 3, rue de Rohan, Paris.) Ce grand col Marie-Stuart est absolument nouveau, aussi bien par sa forme la des position de son dessin, que par le goût artistique qui à présidé au détail général de l'ensemble. De forme carrée dans le dos, il se dégage légèrement en deux pointes gracieuses sur les épaules, les deux côtés du devant, pour se terminer en châle sur la poitrine. Ce col constituera la plus jolie et la plus riche garniture pour toilette habillée de l'été; un corsage léger, décolleté en cœur sur le devant, revêtira un cachet très distingué, orné de cette parure du meilleur goût et que nos élégantes ont adoptée avec un engouement que justifient sa finesse, sa légèreté et la facile et charmante exécution de son travail. La broderie de ce col se fait avec du lacet plat ajouré aux deux lisières, un peu l 'rge, que l’on dispose sur de la moleskine dessinée, en fleurs, feuilles, arabesques enchevêtrées et contournées de manière à former une véritable dentelle que seuls le Bruges et le Venise peuvent lui disputer. So, what are you and your friends' thoughts regarding Personas 1 and 2? And honestly, you can be as critical and as brutal in your replies as needed.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm very fond of both. The original has this really distinct, lugubrious atmosphere propelled largely by the music of Aoki, Okibe et al. It's a huge shame that English-speaking players are forced to choose between a version with an infamously compromised localization and a more approachable one that eradicates the aural identify of the original game.

I have a ton of affection for this era of Kaneko art as well. You can tell he was having a lot of fun using then-contemporary celebrities as references for the character designs; there was a certain facial idiosyncrasy that would be lost as he settled into his more distinctive, modern style. Also a big fan of the lanky, expressive sprites in both games- it's such a rarely deployed idiom.

The battle positioning and diffuse exp acquisition go a long way to diminish any satisfaction there might be in the battle mechanics, but I do appreciate the oddly terse dungeon design, which feels like a complete outlier among the first-person dungeon crawlers in the series.

I'll have more to say about the P2 duology once we revisit it for the stream, but I think these games are really singular. EP in particular has what I would consider the platonic ideal for character portraits in this style. Super eclectic, tons of heft to the construction, and clearly a lot of care invested in every expression. An early peak for this representational mode in the series.

The dungeons are kind of wretched. Brutal encounter rate, and these huge, nothing rat mazes that feel completely divorced from the urban structures they're intended to represent. Record stores do not look like that, they are in fact very small! Fuck off!!! The combat is functional but basically frictionless. Best negotiation dialogue in the series.

One thing that I love, and this is present to a lesser extent in P1 as well, is the way your party members will populate the various stores, shrines, parks etc. There's like 50 of these fucking places, and every new plot flag refreshes the dialogue for each character. They easily could have written so many variations of "Hey, are you sure we should be wasting time here instead of heading to (next plot destination)?", but almost every interaction is full of fun character-building moments that would otherwise have no place within the urgency of the narrative. I think this superabundance of tertiary dialogue is actually very charming when engaging with it is left to your discretion.

But most importantly, it's the perfect capstone to the fin de siecle obsession with the occult in Japanese pop culture as it had manifested in the previous two decades. The games throw absolutely everything into the equation- alien spaceships, divination, ancient prophecies, the NWO conspiracy, Lovecraft, the fucking Dan Brown Hitler subplot- everything was on the table. It's this fantastic summation of the Nostradamus/Y2K/Millenial zeitgeist of 1999, and just a great outlet for that sheer, Okada-Kaneko-propelled creativity. The modern games are incredibly anodyne in comparison.

anything interesting from the podcast? i don't really like dax so i dont wanna listen to it but I still wanna know what dan said😭

it's going under a cut cause it's long as hell and basically just a play-by-play replay of (most) of what was talked about:

it literally begins with daniel offering to turn off supercross, which is on the background, if it's going to be too distracting. i feel like this is important context

dax asks about it was like driving in the australian outback for that rbr promo video a few weeks back. daniel: "i'm gonna break something to you... [it wasn't you?] not all of it." he says it took an extended trip and he couldn't have made it work with scheduling, specifically mentioning the simulator.

he says after that video—cause it WAS real, it just wasn't all him—and being back in the red bull family, he's been reminded of how much cool shit they do. "and even, you have an idea and you just share that idea within the family, and something normally comes through from that idea."

dax asks how he feels about being a passenger in some of that crazy shit, the loop-de-loop helicopters and planes and shit. "the older i get, the less i say yes" but then says he's torn cause the older he gets, the more he wants to push himself to have experiences like that, even if he's scared shitless. says it's easier with things he doesn't understand, like planes, to just close his eyes and put his trust in whoever's controlling it. he knows too much with cars.

dax asks if he ever worries that because he has this crazy job, these people are gonna give him an extra crazy ride, thinking that's the expectation? daniel says he tries to be very honest with people, tells them that they don't have to do too much because he's a bit of a wuss.

they talk about nurburgring, the track daniel's driving this fall. daniel tells a story of driving the track at 18 years old in a rented fiat punto, not long after he'd moved to europe. he ended up cutting through a chicane and putting it in the grass 😭

dax says he hopes they give him more than one day at the track. daniel: "i better hope not, because i'm just gonna want to go quicker and quicker! we'll see...by then i might be a little more sharp."

he tells another story of going there with renault and driving the track in a road car in the rain. slid a few times and then decided to just bring it home the rest of the way, cause he doesn't really know the feel or limits of a road car the way he does an f1 car.

daniel turns it around for a while and asks dax about getting into formula one and what hooked him, what he loves about it, etc. dax brings up drive to survive and "you're gonna hate this but it's YOU!" how he's first person you see on the show and he hooks you in with the jokes, the cockiness, the looks, the personality, etc, and then you want to see him win cause you like him so much, and the love for everything else comes after and because of that.

daniel says he gets more and more people coming up to him now that know him as the guy on drive to survive instead of just as the race car driver. he wonders sometimes if they actually know he races or if he's just that guy from the netflix show

85-90% of people that came up to him pre-dts were guys, now it's more women. "it's definitely more than 50%, especially here in the states."

christian horner gives the best hugs in f1 (amongst drivers and team principals). specifically mentions 2018 mexico, his last pole with the team.

dax brings up how polite daniel is on the radio, asks how he developed that mindset. daniel says a lot of it is down to maturity. he knows for a fact that in his earlier years he was much more reactive. tells a story of back in 2013 where he'd blasted the team over the radio for some car issue, then got back to the garage and was struck by how selfish it was of him. says that now he consciously tries to be calm on the radio because he knows how chaotic the race is for everyone and he doesn't want to add to the chaos. he also says it's a give and take situation, because there are times where he'll fuck up or make a mistake, and "maybe sometimes i'm getting a blast, but not always. like a lot of the time, it's a hand over the shoulder and a little bit of...yeah there's a little bit of, i don't know, they didn't tell me how shit i am."

would be least shocked to find out yuki was eaten by their pet bengal tiger. "i'm only putting it down to physics and the human anatomy."

val "has turned into one of my favorite humans on the grid. he's coming into his own." says they've had a few glasses of wine together, but have never gone out for a proper rager together.

thinks seb is the most likely to have a collection of fine porcelain china."i feel like that's something he could be into, he appreciates fine art."

they talk about seb a bit more. daniel says that he probably didn't show much personality in his early / peak years, was more of a machine, but as he got older he started letting his guard down and showing more of the human side, which is what everyone fell in love with. he and seb got a lot closer over the years that followed their stint at red bull together and he'd definitely count him as a close friend now.

dax asks if you could get rid of one rule what would it be? daniel talks about pierre getting really close to getting a race ban last year over silly little stuff, nothing reckless, and they didn't think that should add up to a race ban. "we talked about that a lot, it wasn't justified."

dax asks how he would feel about getting rid of the speed limit in pit lane. he says that when he started the limit was 100 kpm, and he was glad when they brought it down to 80 kpm because it felt too fast. he couldn't imagine not having a speed limit at all.

dax asks if there's a rule he thinks should exist. daniel at first says he was trying to skip that one, then says that while part of him loves that some teams are better than others and part of the competition is fighting your way to a better team, part of him also wishes the field were a bit closer sometimes. brings up how some american sports will have a systems meant to mitigate that, where the lowest team gets first draft pick or whatever, and maybe f1 could incorporate something like that. dax then brings up indycar and how everything is spec, but doesn't necessarily make for more fun or interesting racing. daniel agrees and reiterates that the biggest thrill and challenge as a driver is fighting your way to the best team on the grid.

they talk about zak brown challenging toto to a boxing match and christian to a kart race. dax asks if daniel thinks he mixed them up by accident 😭

daniel says toto is "a pretty cool cat." also calls him "a specimen" and says "if he's not the coolest, he's definitely one of the coolest." dax also apparently heard from a source close to him that toto is a great dancer too???

thinks either charles or carlos would be the best on dancing with the stars. he does NOT think fernando would be a good dancer, because "he's put all his eggs in the racing basket."

they talk about how fun it's been to watch nando racing this year. daniel: "i've loved seeing it. even like, sure, it makes me think 'shit i can still do it at an older age if i really want it.' so there's that, but even just for the sport." and talks about how the average age of the athletes in so many sports keep getting younger and younger, so it's fun to see someone older still succeeding. says it's "encouraging"

says he still watches races. he thought this year he'd be more distant and wouldn't go out of his way to watch it as much, but no. he hasn't missed a single session from a single race so far, including practices. says he's "heavily invested." also says he thinks it's good for him, cause this year is about getting a lot of answers about how badly he wants to come back and all that, so the fact that he's still so interested and invested tells him he's not done yet, cause he thinks that if he was truly done, he wouldn't care as much as he still does. dax reinforces that by sharing his own anecdote about his acting career and knowing he’s done with it because he's not interested in what's going on in the industry anymore.

they talk about baku. dax asks what he loves and what he hates about it. daniel says there's not much he hates about it. talks about the first time he drove a street circuit, how the adrenaline was so much higher and everything was just better. baku is all of that with high speeds. "a wicked track" and probably one of the most nuts tracks on the schedule.

dax asks if they're able to see the castle from the car as they're driving. daniel: "yeah, but you don't want to!" says that at most tracks they go to—specifically mentioning monaco—of course it's beautiful, but they're so tunnel vision focused that they don't really see any of it.

says that last year in singapore, during one of the practices, he was able to see some of the skyscrapers from the car as he was driving "and i was like, 'shit, i don't think i've ever seen them before.'" dax brings up the fact that that was late in the year, when he already knew it was gonna be his last year with the team, and asks if maybe it was his subconscious telling him to look around and enjoy it cause who knows if this is the last time. daniel agrees that it probably was "but right now, i'm happy because i'm happy with where i'm at, but i'm also happy with the like 'ehhhh i'm not sure it's over' so. that's cool. but i can't guarantee it cause obviously i don't have a racing contract next year, but personally at least, i feel like there's still a fire there."

dax wraps up by telling daniel "you're gonna be uncomfortable with this but i find it so comical that you're still the most popular driver in formula one and you're not driving" and then literally goes on for like two minutes about how fucking hilarious it is to him that there are more pictures of daniel, more articles about daniel, more conversation in general about daniel than even the driver that might have won the race that week and how much we all fucking LOOOOOVE him and would love to see him driving again. truly One Of Us 🤝

daniel tells dax he appreciates that and "look, i certainly play out scenarios in my head and i, like, visualize things and, yeah, i would love...." cuts himself off to say he doesn't want to come back just to drive, he wants to come back to try to win, but if that opportunity with a team, that could be the right fit. "i just want to win basically. just cutting to it." and "i think this year i'm understanding that you just want to get back to basics. it's like i'm trying to get all those feelings back. and i'm not forcing anything, it's like 'why did i start this?' like, 'where's that core love for it?'" dax: "is it fair to say you're opening yourself up to the hunger to return and captivate you and make you singularly focused?" daniel: "absolutely. yeah."

Review: Abigail (2024)

Rated R for strong bloody violence and gore throughout, pervasive language and brief drug use

The trailers for Abigail, the latest from the Radio Silence team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, promised a simple, straightforward horror/comedy that inverted the premise of their prior film Ready or Not (a lone female character faces off against a group of people inside a mansion, but this time, she's the villain), and that's exactly what the film delivered. Probably the biggest problem I had with this movie is that the trailers spoiled way too many of its wild plot turns, not least of all the central hook that the little girl at the center of the film is actually a vampire, which the film itself doesn't reveal until nearly halfway in -- but then again, I was having way too good a time with this movie to really care all that much. I came for blood and some grim laughs, and I got them, courtesy of some standout performances and filmmakers who know exactly how to take really gory violence and make it more fun than gross. If you like your horror movies bloody, this is certainly one to check out.

Our protagonists are a group of criminals who have been recruited by a man named Lambert to kidnap Abigail, the 12-year-old daughter of a very wealthy man, after she gets home from ballet practice and hold her ransom for $50 million. However, once they've taken her to their safehouse, a rustic mansion deep in the woods, strange occurrences start happening around them, and one by one, they start turning up brutally murdered. Before long, they learn two things. First, Abigail's rich father is actually Kristof Lazar, a notorious crime boss who has a brutal and fearsome assassin named Valdez on his payroll who may well have been sent to take out these hoodlums. Second, and more importantly, Abigail is herself Valdez -- and a vampire. A very pissed-off vampire who quickly gets loose and goes to war against her captors, using all her vampiric powers against them.

In a manner not unlike From Dusk Till Dawn, the film starts as a slow-burn crime thriller with few hints as to what Abigail truly is, instead focusing on fleshing out our main characters, a motley crew of entertaining crooks who have no idea what they're getting into. Our protagonists may not be a particularly sympathetic bunch (being kidnappers and all), but all of them are great characters who are very fun to watch, reacting as many of us would to seeing what happens in the latter half of the film and anchoring the mayhem in something human. Melissa Barrera makes for a likable and compelling lead as the token good one/telegraphed final girl Joey (not her real name; they all use codenames taken from members of the Rat Pack), Kathryn Newton was hilarious and got some of the biggest moments in the film as the rich kid hacker Sammy, and Giancarlo Esposito made the most of his limited screen time as their mysterious leader Lambert, but the real standout among the protagonists was Dan Stevens as Frank, a corrupt ex-cop who becomes the de facto leader of the group and takes charge once the carnage begins only to turn out to have some skeletons in his closet. This was a group of people who all felt like fully fleshed-out, three-dimensional characters who I wanted to see either succeed or, in some cases, get what they had coming to them, even if the words "let's split up" were used a bit too often during the third act.

The true MVP among the cast, though, was Alisha Weir as Abigail. In the first act, she's excellent at playing an innocent-seeming little girl -- with emphasis on "playing", as every so often she lets her precocious mask slip just enough to let both her caretaker Joey and the audience know that she knows a lot more than she's letting on. After the reveal, she turns into a hell of a villain, a potty-mouthed psycho who's absolutely relishing getting to murder her captors, operating with glee as she fights them and continuing to them even when they think they have the upper hand. The film makes great use of the fact that Abigail is also a ballerina, not just in her outfit but also in how the action and chase sequences give Weir (who has a background in musical theater) ample opportunity to show off her dance skills, which has the effect of framing Abigail as the antithesis of her captors: violent as hell, but also elegant and graceful in a way that lets you know that she's probably been doing this for a very long time. I can see Weir going places in the future, if her performance here is any indication.

When it comes to scares, this film is a mess of gore, inflicted on both Abigail and her captors. The first act keeps us in the dark as to what's really going on, and did a good job building tension as Abigail lurks in the shadows and the characters find the dead and mutilated bodies of her victims, not knowing what's really happening. There are decapitations, a man having half his face torn off, lots of bites, and more than one instance of somebody exploding into a mess of gore (a gag that, going by how they used it in Ready or Not, Radio Silence seem to be pretty big fans of). There's a creepy sequence of somebody getting psychically possessed by Abigail that spices up the proceedings with a different kind of horror, especially as the performance of the actor playing the victim shifts. The climax was action-packed and filled with vampire mayhem, and while I thought the story was kinda spinning its wheels at this point, the film was still too much fun for me to really fault it too much. At this point, Radio Silence has become a brand I trust when it comes to delivering popcorn horror experiences that aren't that deep, but are still very fun, enjoyable times at either the multiplex or in front of your TV.

The Bottom Line

I came to see a ballerina vampire kick people's asses for nearly two hours, and that's exactly what I got. Abigail is a rock-solid, rock-em-sock-em good time of a horror/comedy buoyed by a great cast and directors who know how to entertain. If you don't mind lots of blood, check it out.

Doctor Who, but Chronologically 29ish

Fun fact! When we started this project, some Whittaker episodes did not exist, and we’ve skipped one! So Let’s hastily go back in time to 1807. We’ve just seen Tennant make eyes at Madame de Pompadour, we’re about to see Capaldi finally be a good guy and take Bill to the last London Ice Fair. Where are we this episode?

China! 1807 China, a little fishing village that gets annihilated by Sea Devils.

I was rooting for this episode, you know. It sounded great. The guest cast is smoking hot – when Crystal Yu turned up as Mistress Ching the Pirate Queen, I said “Oh no” aloud. When Arthur Lee turned up as Legendary Pirate Ji-hun, Steff said “Oh no” aloud. We are bisexual and week. Also, return of Sea Devils! And a Chinese episode! The TARDIS team is Whittaker, Yaz and Dan! Sounds great!

It’s crap. It’s just crap.

Good points: the banter between the characters is lovely, and I laughed many times. I suspect this is an actor-director. The start makes clear something I already suspected from the Flux stuff we’ve seen – that Dan is actually Yaz’s companion, not the Doctor’s. There’s a very fun scene where they all step out of the TARDIS, and Dan is dressed like a pirate. “What are you wearing?” the Doctor asks, incredulous. “Yaz told me to!” protests Dan. “Yaz!” says the Doctor. “Did you dress Dan in that?” Love it.

The sci-fi plot is okay. The Sea Devils have Team Aqua’s plan to flood the world and make more habitat for Pokemon Sea Devils, which they aim to achieve by swapping the magnetic polarity of the Earth’s poles. “I see!” exclaims a character. “That’s why all the constellations physically changed in the sky!”, a sentence that gave me 50 points of psychic damage and necessitated a quiet lie down.

The absolute worst part is that, continuing a grand tradition of Doctor Who writers trying to use Sea Devils, Silurians or Ice Warriors, these writers didn’t understand the story they were telling. We therefore ONCE AGAIN have an allegory of native people trying to commit genocide to reclaim their stolen lands and needing to be stopped. I am 100% certain that was not intentional, but fucking hell, lads.

But the second worst part is that this episode is absolutely atrociously badly shot. It is appalling. I spent half the episode trying to fucking see, because even in static scenes of two people talking to each other and not moving, the camera would just… slide off the characters, even while they are talking. And this is our second swashbuckling pirate episode featuring swordfights where they didn’t bother getting a choreographer, apparently, and thought they could make up for it by putting the camera in a bag and swinging it about in a windmill to cover the gaps.

At two separate points, two separate scenes, the Doctor offers a hand to Yaz to pull her somewhere. In both, the hand is partially-to-entirely out of shot, making the action unclear. And that is a problem, because THIS IS A DOCTOR/YAZ SHIPPING EPISODE HOLY SHIT????

It turns out Yaz has talked to Dan about this, and he has possibly talked to the Doctor, because there’s a lovely bit where Yaz fully embraces the Useless Lesbian Trope and begs him for details (“What did you say to her?? What did she say to you??? Omg tell me her exact words –“). Towards the end, while the Doctor saves the day and Yaz as ever fails the Sexy Lamp Test, the Doctor gives her a heartfelt confession.

“I can’t do relationships,” she says. “There’s no time. But if I ever did, it would be you. I’ve never felt like this, not since my wife, and I was a different man then.”

PLOT TWIST!!!!! Whomst is her wife??? How exciting. What mysteries are arising this episode.

Interesting, though, because so far, as nice as Yaz is, she’s super bland. Just nothing to her. Even episodes where she’s appeared hyper competent, she’s actually just been doing pointless busy work; she routinely fails the Sexy Lamp Test as standard. I wonder why her? Intriguing. Perhaps she will improve.

Anyway, at the end of the episode they agree to just stay friends and mutually Yearn for each other, and then the Doctor skims a stone INCREDIBLY badly (no srsly tho Jodie does Huddersfield not have a river or something you have to get LOW)

So! Let’s update!

“She” (an unknown person) is returning (perhaps River returned as Missy. Maybe Me? Maybe Clara???!)

There is something on Donna’s back

An entire planet, Pyrovilia, just… disappeared, somehow. (Maybe because the TARDIS is exploding??? Saturnine was also lost, and that WAS because of the TARDIS exploding. The lion man’s planet was also lost but he was a bit of a knob about it if I’m honest.)

Amy is maybe dead (she’s not)

The Doctor has been cubed (he’s out, but how?)

River is possibly blown up (unless she’s Missy)

The TARDIS has blown up (It’s fine now. Except it’s sort of melting now because it’s corrupted, but it’s fine again)

The universe appears to have ended (the universe is back again)

The Doctor has employed(?) Nardole

(And Nardole was “reassembled???” Nardole had glass nipples and invisible hair?? WHAT THE FUCK IS HE)

There’s a vault in the TARDIS and it contains Missy but we don’t know why (sometimes she knocks for the bants)

What has happened to all these companions and where are the new ones coming from?

There’s an immortal Viking girl now. Her name is Me and she’s now looking after the people the Doctor abandons

What’s With The Silence?

Why was Rory entirely unconcerned by the entire world suddenly going silent when that is Not Normal and should have been, at the very least, extremely disconcerting?

What did the Doctor do to Queen Lizzie One?

Who is Captain Jack Harkness? (Is he the one who gave the companions a warning about the lone cyberman?)

Why is Amy seeing a one-eyed woman in a vanishing window?

What’s with the Doctor’s future involving getting shot by an astronaut?

Is Amy pregnant and why is it inconclusive?

Who is Sarah-Jane Smith?

How is the Doctor Bill’s teacher and why/where does he have an office?

Why are you acting like the Netherlands haven't just won

hi anon, you chose the wrong person to say this to. please don't fucking come at me with this kind of fucking bullshit. if you didn't read my blog info, which i dont except the average pvv supporter to do (no offense), then you'd know the way i identify! woagh! and you'd ALSO know that i actually don't feel very welcome or safe anymore and that im terrified of the people around me because of the person they voted for. the netherlands did not win, they didn't win anything fucking at all if they're regressing on human rights and electing one of the biggest bigots there are. you say "nederland weer op 1" but you know who funds PVV right? you know he gets his money from russia and isreal, right? you know that he does not care about you, right? and that the regular citizen is nothing to him, right? and you know that after he comes for those from an immigrant background, he will come for the LGBT community. he will come for the disabled. he will come for women's rights. he will come for the rights of everyone except white, rich, old men. he doesn't care about the working class, and he sure as all fuck can't make true on his promises. most of the things he wants goes against our constitution, how fucked up is it that people still voted for that?

he wants to cut off immigration, including those that come here for work. he wants to then increase the size of our healthcare and our healthcare workers. quick question, who is going to work in our healthcare? we are already on a shortage, who's going to pick up what's yet to come?

he wants to build more homes, but who's actually going to build those? like, physically, who is going to put those houses together because, guess what! there's no one to do the fucking work. no one works in ANY of these professions anymore, no one WANTS to work in them either. so he would need to get funding to make schooling free for these professions, or create incentives. but where do we get that money? where would you get a billion to make med school (rough term, not really what the term is here) free for only one year? ah, i hear you say, just pull the funding from ukraine and the developing countries. well, 1.) we can't, we're legally obligated to keep paying, and if he somehow does find a way to stop the funding then 2.) we will be hit with fines from both the EU and the NATO, and maybe even the UN. and guess who will pay that, anon? it will be the working class, since he doesn't want to make companies pay more tax, so it will be you and me that pay for this.

and all that isn't even the massive impact he will have on our climate, and don't try the fucking "netherlands is only a small country, it doesn't matter what we do because the us china and russia and india womp womp" because no matter how small the step is, small steps are worth it, too.
