The Role of Voodoo in Cyberpunk Mythos
Cyberpunk, a subgenre of science fiction, is known for its vision of a high-tech, dystopian future, where the line between man and machine is often blurred. Against a backdrop of neon lights, skyscrapers, and rain-soaked streets, this genre delves into the darker aspects of technology and societal development. Surprisingly, woven into this futuristic fabric is a tapestry of ancient beliefs and mystical practices. One of the most fascinating integrations is that of Voodoo. Let's delve into how Voodoo has been utilized and represented within the vast cyberpunk media landscape.
Voodoo: A Brief Overview
Before diving into its role in cyberpunk, it's essential to have a basic understanding of Voodoo. Voodoo is a syncretic religion born in West Africa and carried to the Americas via the transatlantic slave trade. It blends African tribal rituals with Catholic practices, creating a unique spiritual path focused on ancestors, spirits, and deities known as "loa" or "lwa". Rituals, dances, and ceremonies are essential aspects of Voodoo, aiming to invoke these spirits for guidance or assistance.
Voodoo in Cyberpunk Literature
Arguably, the most famous reference to Voodoo in cyberpunk literature is in William Gibson's "Neuromancer". In this seminal work, Gibson introduces the Voodoo gods as powerful entities within the cyberspace matrix. These deities represent vast artificial intelligences and are worshipped by a group known as the Rastafarians, who see the matrix as a spiritual realm.
Film and Television
In the realm of film and television, Voodoo and its aesthetic often intermingle with cyberpunk themes. The movie "Strange Days" (1995) is a notable example. While not directly referencing Voodoo, the film touches upon themes of memory, experience, and the transfer of consciousness – concepts which resonate with Voodoo's beliefs in ancestral memory and spirit possession.
Anime and Manga
Japanese anime and manga have a rich tradition of integrating various cultural elements into their narratives. "Cyber City Oedo 808" briefly touches upon mysticism and the idea that the digital and spiritual can coexist. Though not directly Voodoo, it echoes the genre's frequent dance with ancient beliefs within a modern context.
Video Games
Video games as a medium have embraced the cyberpunk genre wholly, often merging technology and mysticism. The game "Shadowrun" mixes cyberpunk with magic, including Voodoo-inspired elements. Players can interact with spirits, engage in rituals, and even become shamans, channeling energies that mirror Voodoo practices.
Implications and Interpretations
Why is there a connection between Voodoo and cyberpunk, two seemingly disparate concepts? It can be argued that both revolve around the idea of connection - be it to spirits, ancestors, or a digital realm. In a world where technology has the power to isolate, there's a yearning for connection, whether to our past, our gods, or each other.
Furthermore, cyberpunk often deals with the concept of dualities – man and machine, physical and digital, past and future. Voodoo, with its blending of ancient beliefs and practices in new contexts, perfectly embodies this duality.
In conclusion, the infusion of Voodoo into the cyberpunk mythos serves as a potent reminder that even in a future dominated by technology, the ancient and spiritual will always find a place. As we move forward, it will be fascinating to see how this relationship between the old and the new continues to evolve.

The man who became a figurehead of the January 6 Capitol riot is planning to run for Congress in Arizona, and he may not even be the most extreme candidate on the ballot.
Jacob Chansley, a January 6 rioter known as the QAnon Shaman who wore face paint and horns to breach the Capitol, pleaded guilty to taking part in the riot. Last week, Chansley filed a statement of interest to run for a seat in Arizona’s 8th congressional district. Chansley, who has lived in the district for 30 years, tells WIRED that he is running his campaign single-handedly and does not plan to accept PAC money. Though he’s not eligible to vote under Arizona law because he is still serving part of his sentence, Chansley is able to run for Congress.
“When I heard that the seat was available, I prayed on it for a while, and the message I got from God was, ‘Do it,’” says Chansley.
In Arizona, Chansley’s decision to run for office is almost standard. Though Chansley may be viewed as a fringe candidate by many, he is not an outlier in a district and state where election deniers and conspiracists are already front and center in the 2024 election races.
Ever since former US president Donald Trump lost Arizona in 2020, the state has become the epicenter of election denial conspiracies and efforts to undermine democracy. The state was home to the Cyber Ninjas–run GOP recount that cost taxpayers millions, and its voters are represented by multiple far-right extremist GOP lawmakers, including state senator Wendy Rogers and US representative Paul Gosar, who have boosted wild conspiracy theories related to vote rigging. Former TV presenter Kari Lake, who has been touted as a possible vice presidential pick by Trump in 2024, continues to claim that the Arizona secretary of state race she lost by 17,000 votes in 2022 was stolen. Lake has also boosted racist “birther” conspiracies about former president Barack Obama and has pushed for journalists and political rivals to be jailed for unspecified crimes.
In Chansley’s home district, a slate of candidates reflecting Arizona’s embrace of extremist ideologies have already declared interest in running for the seat left open by the retirement of US representative Debbie Lesko, a member of the far-right Republican Freedom Caucus in Congress who voted against certifying the 2020 election results.
Blake Masters, who ran for a US Senate seat in 2022 and lost, announced he would run for a seat in Arizona’s 8th district last month. During his Senate race, Masters was backed by money from techno-libertarian Peter Thiel, his former boss, as well as an endorsement from Trump, who told him to lean into claims of election fraud if he wanted to win the election. (Masters very much touted 2020 election denial conspiracies, but they apparently didn’t help him win.)
Masters, who published videos of him shooting guns as part of his 2022 campaign, will face a challenge for the GOP nomination from Abe Hamadeh. Hamadeh, a 2022 Republican candidate for Arizona attorney general, also lost his race in 2022 despite having Trump’s endorsement. Hamadeh was one of the loudest voices in Arizona falsely claiming that Trump had won the 2020 election, and he is still trying to have his own loss to attorney general Kris Mayes overturned.
Former US representative Trent Franks, Lesko’s predecessor, is also running again. Franks was forced to resign in 2017 after he offered female staffers millions of dollars to serve as surrogate mothers for him and his wife—and at least one aide was unsure whether Franks was requesting to impregnate her through sexual intercourse or in vitro fertilization.
Anthony Kern, an Arizona state senator who was also in Washington, DC, on January 6, and who has been accused of using campaign finances to fund his trip to the capital, has announced his candidacy for the congressional seat as well. Kern was captured on video entering a restricted area outside the Capitol, though there is no evidence he was violent or entered the Capitol itself, and he has not been charged for any crimes related to the riot.
Kern is, however, currently under investigation by the Arizona attorney general as one of 11 fake electors who signed documents in 2020 to claim that Trump had beaten President Joe Biden in Arizona, even though Biden actually won the state. Kern also took part in the sham hand-recount of ballots in Maricopa County in 2021.
Before becoming a lawmaker, Kern was fired from his position with the El Mirage Police Department for lying to his supervisor about repaying the cost of a tablet computer he had lost. He was placed on a list of Maricopa County law enforcement officials with a history of dishonesty or misconduct.
“The race in general is gonna be wild,” one independent researcher who tracks the far-right in Arizona under the moniker Arizona Right Watch tells WIRED. But, they add, they would still “take Chansley over Kern, who is totally corrupt and batshit.”
And even though the other candidates are possibly more connected politically, Chansley still thinks he has closer ties to voters in his home district.
“Several of the candidates running here in District 8 don’t even live in District 8. I’ve lived in District 8 for over 30 years,” he tells WIRED. “I’m largely doing it on my own. It’s just me and God, man.”
He’s currently working on a campaign website, and plans to begin knocking on doors to meet voters in the next couple of weeks. Chansley is also eager to take part in debates with other candidates. “That's where I think I'll shine,” Chansley says. “I'm ready to debate anyone and everyone that wants to try.”
When asked whether he would be attending a candidate forum being organized by a local community organization on Wednesday night, Chalsey says, “quite possibly.”
Chansley added that he doesn’t want any campaign donations, but says that if people want to support him, they can do so by buying merchandise on his website which includes T-shirts, mugs, and yoga leggings that feature him dressed in the notorious QAnon Shaman garb.
Despite having no experience, no money, no support, and no endorsements, Chansley is still optimistic about winning in 2024.
“I think my chances of winning are good, otherwise God wouldn't have asked me to run,” Chansley says.

Manifest Destiny, 2008
16 foot jump off the Tsien and Williams ramp onto a 3 x 12 x12 foot red foam mattress
On January 8, 2008 during my visit to Santa Fe, I was informed that the exhibition design for the Biennial would contain a large elevated ramp circulating throughout the show, creating a directed path for the visitors. When invited to create a site-specific work, I chose to intervene by proposing to cut the ramp at the point it reached the height of sixteen feet and set at the bottom a 3’12’12′ red foam mattress. This will generate a situation where, if the Biennial visitors desire, midway through the exhibition they can jump from the platform onto the red foam mattress or just go back.*This gesture arose from pure instinct upon first encountering the ramp. The response will be equally instinctive on the part of the visitors  they can jump or they cannot jump. The ramp forces an experience and logic onto the space by interrupting its circularity. I replace this imposition with a physical experience, different from that which was intended.I remember hearing the Beastie Boys singing, “Ride with me, I’ll take you to the border.” Well, here I take you to the border and I want you to jump. Part shaman and part showman, and, in a way, completely both. The regularly scheduled experience is replaced with a concrete, emotional experience. There is an issue of trust on all sides, and the work is shaped by trust from all involved.*This text was dictated by artist Piero Golia to art critic Andrew Berardini on April 25, 2008 at 11.37 p.m. GMT.After having signed waivers, museum patrons will be permitted to jump from Golia’s work. The crash pad is located in the northwest corner of Gallery 4. The actual jump will be approximately five, not sixteen, feet.Piero Golia’s work addresses issues of identity and the role of the artist through the powerful tools of humor and irony. Although Golia calls himself a ‘small artist’ – referring to his physical sizehis self-deprecation stands in stark contrast to the sometimes Herculean endeavors the artist pursues in order to make something of a legend of himself. For one of his first works, he successfully spent six months convincing a woman he had met to have his portrait and the words “Piero My Idol” tattooed on her back. In 2005, he vanished in New York and reappeared three weeks later at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. Within that period of time, he left no trace of himself at all, crossing borders illegally, leaving no proof of payment and pretty much living the life of a fugitive. Typical of Golia’s taste for creating works that are as much talked about as they are looked at, his adventurous journey was reconstructed by a filmmaker with the help of the head of the Italian Police cyber-investigation unit and a criminal psychologist.Golia’s gestures are often as grand as they are futile, as illustrated in the work It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (2003), where he had the entire facade of a building removed from its original position in Amsterdam and installed in a gallery space in Paris. The humor in his work is catalyzed by paradoxical situations  the imbalance between means and aims, and the way things sometimes never turn out the way we expect them to.In 2001, following an invitation to the Tirana Biennale, he rowed across the Adriatic Sea in the opposite direction to migratory movement, thus becoming the first illegal Italian immigrant in Albania, but also playing with the cliches of the emerging artist striving for notoriety on the platform for large-scale exhibitions. Golia turns himself into his biblical counterpart, David, when he fights against the art system and its rules in On the edge (on the crest of the wave) (2000) – a performance he did for the Artissima art fair in Turin – by climbing a 7 meter high palm tree and threatening to come down only if a collector would buy the photo of the work.He now lives in Los Angeles, a place that blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction, making it the perfect setting for his exploration into the process of myth-making and his ironic outlook on contemporary society. In 2005, Piero Golia and Eric Wesley founded The Mountain School of Arts, an educational institution that aims to become a new spot on the cultural map of the city of L.A.
