"𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞" || 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐟𝐨𝐲 𝐗 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫

Genre: Fluff

Synopsis: Reader challenges Draco to a game of Wizard Chess, and whoever loses has to do anything the other wants. Only it goes wrong on several levels.

A/N: Reader is a muggleborn, and Draco gets embarrassed easily. Also, my first one-shot on here! You should totally request something and follow me! Also, I suck at chess, and I'm not proofreading this, so be warned.

"God, you're annoying."

"I know!"

"No, like seriously. I think you're some sort of hell spawn here to personally torture me. I don't know what I did to do deserve this kind of treatment. My life would be better if you were gone from it, honestly."

"It would!"

There was a brief silence between the two of you. Draco stared at you, his eye twitching slightly at your simple responses to his insults.

"Are you only speaking in two words to piss me off?"

"I am!"

"Why do I even entertain you?" The blonde asked himself with a long sigh.

"Because you looooove me?" You suggested with a playful smirk.

"Over my dead body," he shot back in an instant, causing you to pretend to be wounded.

"You're so melodramatic, Draco," you say with a sigh before you smile again, an evil plot forming in your mind, "I'd say you're entertaining me because you want a rematch? Maybe I did get lucky that time at wizard chess!"

A look of intrigue crossed Draco's face as he contemplated his choices. If he'd said yes, he'd have to deal with your annoying voice taunting him for another 15 minutes. But if he said no, he'd probably look like a loser. Plus, he really did want to win against you. With a huff, he sat back down at the table as you pulled out the board and set up the pieces.

"Fine, we'll play again. Only if I'm black this time. You took my lucky color last time," he said as he shot a glare at you.

"Fine by me!" You replied as you leaned your head against your hand and watched the pieces come to life.

Chess had always been something you were gifted at as a child. You used to beat old people at it in the park all the time when you were little. So when you discovered wizard chess was a thing, you knew you'd had to try it out right away! And to your surprise, it was exactly the same as muggle chess, even easier! You just say the position you want the chess pieces to go to, and they do it themselves! You actually found it a bit excessive at first, but it was fun to watch the pieces destroy each other.

The only one who didn't believe that you could be good at Wizard Chess was Draco.

Whatever variant of chess that you played must've been much more simple than the wizard version of it. That was his thought process until you challenged him to a game. And when he lost, you had found out just how much of a sore loser he could really be.

"I'll let you go first," you said with a smile as you watched him intently.

He stared back at you and then eyed the board suspiciously, checking to make sure you hadn't done anything to cheat. You hadn't. You really didn't know how you were supposed to cheat at chess anyway.

"...Pawn to E5," he said eventually, and you watched as the chess piece moved to its respective places.

"Pawn to E4. Say, Draco. Why don't we make this game more interesting?" You say with a smirk.

Draco doesn't answer you immediately and considers his next move.

"Knight to F6. What do you mean by interesting?" He asked, finally looking up at you.

"Bishop to C4. The loser has to do whatever the winner wants!"

"How original," he says as he rolls his eyes, "Bishop to B4. And what would I have to do if you managed to win? Not that you are or anything."

"Hmmmm. How about if you win, I get a kiss from you!" You say cheerfully as you watch Draco's face turn red before you continue, "Pawn to F4!"

"What?! As if. I wouldn't be caught dead kissing a mud-" He paused when he saw the expression on your face, "ahem muggleborn."

Draco had to be careful with the derogatory words he used around you. Although the two of you didn't necessarily respect each other, Draco learned better than to use the word "mudblood" around you. Not after you pushed him to the ground and kicked him repeatedly after he screamed it at you during your second year. After that brutish action, you had earned the bare minimum of respect from him. Even if you were desperately trying to earn more from him.

"And if I win, you have to read aloud that diary entry I found last year. In front of everyone at lunch tomorrow," he said with a smug smirk on his face as you quickly averted your gaze.

"Ugh- I was really hoping you'd forget that one," she said with a sigh.

"How could I? I'd never imagine someone would think of a professor in that way-"

"OKAY, OKAY! You don't have to mention it anymore. Just make your move already!"

"If you insist. Bishop to C3," he said smugly as he watched the Bishop piece destroy your knight piece in a dramatic motion, "Looks like I can look forward to hearing that entry."

"You are the worst, Malfoy."

"As to you, L/N."

A few moves pass, and soon, you're both analyzing the game. Draco wasn't a bad player in any way. You were just naturally better. But this time, he did pose a bit of a challenge. He had become better at predicting your moves. How cute, you thought. He must've been practicing just for you. You smirk to yourself as you watch him, frustrated at what move to play next.

"Pawn to E4," he said, destroying the Pawn you had originally placed there.

"Hm.. I don't like having to think too hard when I play. Guess I'll have to end this game quickly," you say.

"You mean by losing?" He asked with a smirk on his face.

"Maybe! Knight to E5!" You said as you both watched the knight destroy the pawn he had just placed.

Draco went silent in thought, contemplating his next move. If he didn't move a piece to protect his king, you'd be sure to win. But how were you to make him oversee that obvious possibility? You tensed up a bit, realizing that your time is limited by a few seconds. It felt like life and death, knowing that diary entry was on the line. So you acted quickly.

"Hey Draco," you said abruptly.

"What is it?" He asked, slightly annoyed that his concentration was interrupted.

"You have very pretty eyes," you replied.

Draco looked up at you, confused as to why you said something like that randomly. Before he could respond, you reached your arm over the table and gently brushed your thumb against his eyelash, causing him to instinctively close that eye.

"And you have long lashes too. I'm jealous," you say with a smirk.

You could feel the heat rush to his face as he began to turn red again.

"What're you playing at-"

"Oh, Draco!" You say, pretending to be surprised as you pull back your hand, "It's your move."

Draco stared at you in confusion for a second before he cleared his throat and adjusted his collar to compose himself again.

"Right uhh- Pawn to H6-" He said dismissively.

A grin spread on your face. It had worked.

"Queen to C6. That's a checkmate," you say triumphantly as Draco does a double take and looks at you in disbelief.

"What- How?! You- You tricked me!" He exclaimed as he was both embarrassed and also had his pride wounded.

"Perhaps I did! But it was your own fault that you didn't see it was a trick. Maybe you're so smitten with me that you were thinking about me while you made that move?" You teased with a smug smile.

"I did not!! I should've won then, it's not fair if you cheated!" He said indignantly as he glared at you.

"It's not cheating if you let yourself get distracted, though, is it? So you have no one but yourself to blame!"

"You're the absolute worst, Y/N," he grumbled.

"I won't deny that. But it sounds like you're ready for your punishment. Last chance to eat a mint," you say with a smile as you stand up and walk towards him.

He looks up at you with wide eyes as he suddenly remembers the penalty of him losing. The blush on his face appears again as he averts his eyes from you and nervously tugs at his collar.

"You really- Fine, let's just get this over with. And don't say anything to anyone about this," he says as he glares up at you.

"Don't worry, both our lips will be sealed," you say with a smirk as your hand reaches down to hold the side of his face.

You swear you could feel his fast heartbeat through his skin as you lean down towards him. Draco gulps and closes his eyes, accepting his fate and leaning closer to your face. Your lips are only an inch apart before you smirk and blow into his face. He jumps and opens his eyes, looking at you shocked.

"What was that for?!" He asked, confused, as you pulled away.

"I don't know, I felt a bit bad taking away your first kiss like that," you say as you giggle at his reaction.

"What?! No, you're not my- Ugh, never mind! So you did all of that just to act like you're going to kiss me and not do it?"

"I suppose so!"

"But I lost! That was my punishment-"

"And I didn't punish you! Shouldn't you be grateful?

"No- That's not fair-"

"It almost sounds as if you wanted me to kiss you, Draco-"

Before you could say anything else, Draco had stood up and was already walking towards you. Suddenly your face was in his hands as he closed his eyes once more and kissed you.

He was gentle with it, and he was nervous, too. It was almost like it actually was his first kiss. Although you didn't know for sure, you were still pleasantly surprised. You wrap your arms around his neck and gently kiss him back. It was soft and sweet, and it was probably one of the best kiss you had ever had. It lasted for another minute until you finally pulled away.

When you did, it seemed as if Draco finally understood what he did exactly. His face was completely red as he processed everything. He took a step back as he looked at you and then at the ground.

"I'm never playing wizard chess again," he said blankly as he began to walk away at a fast pace.

"This never happened, Y/N. Don't you tell anyone or I'll- I'll-"

"Kiss me again?" You asked with a smile.

Draco looked back at you with both frustration and embarrassment, struggling to come up with a last-minute insult.

"Y'know what? Maybe!" He shouted before he stormed off.

You let out a laugh as you looked back at the chessboard. You smiled as you picked up the queen and held it up. Maybe next time you'd let him win. After all, you knew he'd be back for another round sooner or later.

1800 words written today -- I meant to take today off doing anything related to school, which didn't really work because I accidentally ended up sitting down and working on my dissertation for an hour and a half. Which is objectively good because, like, I need to get the dissertation done and because I need to get class prep done tomorrow I probably won't work on it tomorrow, but also come on, man. Made chicken tortilla soup today (accidentally bought the wrong kind of tomatoes the other day and didn't realize until I'd put it in a pan with onions and garlic, so pulled it out to use for something else), which ended up simmering for about two hours longer than intended because that's when I accidentally worked on my diss. (I do mean accidentally, I don't do any of my school stuff on my main laptop (Problem Child, ten years old) if I can help it, I meant to just check my e-mail on my other laptop.) Watched the 2005 Fantastic Four today because the recent F4 announcement made me think of it and I'm not sure I've seen it since 2005. Did cement why the MCU works so well for me and most other superhero films do not do it for me. (I had the same feeling when I rewatched the X-Men films last year, the various Spider-Man films a few years ago, and AtSV a few weeks ago.)

When Steve had been nine, he had come down with measles and gone deaf in his left ear. He had gotten some of his hearing back in that ear eventually, but at the time no one had known if he would lose the rest of it too. Bucky had taught himself ASL out of a book from the library, then given it to Steve, who liked languages anyway. They had kept it up even when Steve had gotten his hearing mostly back, since it had given them a way to talk to each other without anyone else understanding, though it had gotten Bucky a thick ear from his ma a few times when they’d used it in church. When they had joined the Howling Commandos, they had combined it with the LSF Dernier’s old Maquis group had used to make what speakers of both languages considered an untranslatable abomination, which meant that the Howlies had a secret, silent language that no one else could understand. Until just now Bucky hadn’t remembered any of that; Steve certainly had never mentioned it in the past two years, but then again, there hadn’t been any reason to; they hadn’t been in the field together between Siberia and Wakanda. Apparently he hadn’t been using it with his new team, either, because Sam asked with interest, “What’s he saying?” Bucky licked his lips. “He wants to know if it’s really me.”

it’s such a crazy thing to go to bed before midnight these days!! i fell asleep at like 11:30 the night before the japanese gp, felt so strange 😵 lmaooo i feel you tho. this ain’t about kpop but i very often used to bias the maknaes back in the days 🫣 so i feel you… ppl online always were like “omg you bias xxxx? he’s such a baby!!�� but i was his age 😩 pato!!! i love that guy (even tho i barely know anything about him), he’s got such a good aura lmao very very crazy… tbh aren’t we all zak in that way?? 😶 to be honest i don’t know too much about him :(( except that he’s very gen z and that oreos are his favorite food (??? bestie it’s not even food…) 😁 awwww we should both start watching it next year!! i only watched it this year for the swedes and marcus armstrong (sorry bb 🥲) but i wasn’t too engaged…. but yes we def need to ruin our sleep schedules even more aNd more racing 🥰 f1/2/3/4/freca/dtm/all other series aren’t enough!!!

Get To Know Our 2023 Rookies

Hello again, everyone. This time I'm here not with a race report but an article about some of our drivers. Drivers are certainly some of the crucial people in our sport. But I have three drivers that I particularly want to talk about: rookies of the season; Logan Sargeant, Nyck De Vries, and Oscar Piastri. I specifically want to talk about the rookies because people often ignore them as they are new to the circle. In my opinion, we shouldn't ignore them. Instead, we should watch them even more closely. Many people, unfortunately, consider rookies as temporary drivers. The number of people who believe they could be permanent is very few. But they are not temporary; instead, they are the drivers we should watch closely and give many chances to. So, who are our 2023 rookies? Let's get to know them a little.

Logan Sargeant:

No lie! Logan is a driver that I am particularly interested in because he is my compatriot and the first American on the grid in such a long time. His full name is Logan Hunter Sargeant, and he was born on the 31st of December in 2000 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USA). The young driver started his career with karting in 2008. in 2015 he became the World Champion in the World Junior Karting Championship (CIK - FIA KFJ), and he etched his name into the history of motorsports at such a young age as the first American ever to claim the world title in this series. He stepped into the Formula world with the UAE Formula 4 in 2016, then the British F4 in 2017, and here he became teammates with one of our other rookies, Oscar Piastri. Logan went into Formula Renault Eurocup in 2018 and finished the championship in 4th place with 2018 points. The road to F1 has opened to the young driver as he stepped into FIA Formula 3 in 2019 with Team Carlin, becoming teammates with Felipe Drugovich. In 2020, Logan transferred to the Prema team as Frederik Vesti's teammate and scored his first win in Silverstone Feature Race. The young driver announced that he could not move onto F2 in 2021, citing financial reasons, and continued to race in F3 for another season. Later on, Williams Racing sponsored and signed him into their junior program, which allowed Sargeant to find a place in F2 with Team Carlin. The young driver etched his name into the sport's history again as the first American to win an F2 race and finished the championship in 3rd place after a successful season. As Williams Racing has announced that they would sign the driver in if he manages to earn enough SuperLicense points, they kept their promise and signed Sargeant for their 2023 lineup. Now, about his personality: Logan seems calm, quiet, and reserved. He is pretty shy on and off the race track and will need to break his shyness (at least on the tarmac). I can still say that during the 2nd race of the season (Saudi Arabian Grand Prix), his close attacks (even though he backed down at the last moment) were a preview of his potential if he can manage to break his shyness. I continue watching closely and congratulate him.

Nyck De Vries:

When we consider his success and experience in other series, it's unfair to call Nyck, the 2nd Dutchman of our grid, a ''rookie''. However, we accept him as a rookie since this is his 1st season in F1. We can say that the 2019 F2 and 2021 Formula E champion De Vries' career is full of success. His full name is Hendrik Johannes Nicasius De Vries, and he was born on the 6th of February in 1995 in Uitwellingerga, Netherlands. Nyck, whose father is also a racing driver, became the WSK World Champion in KFJ3 (Junior Karting) category in 2008. The successful driver continued his career in Formula Renault Eurocup between 2012 and 2014. Later, De Vries moved up into Formula Renault 3.5 in 2015 and completed the season in 3rd place with 160 points. Nyck moved up into GP3 (Formula 3 today) in 2016 and F2 in 2017. The young driver raced in Formula 2 between 2017 and 2019 and finally became the F2 champion in 2019. Nyck later won the ''6 Hours of Fuji'' race (in his category) in the World Endurance Championship, racing for the Racing Team Netherlands. Then, the successful driver switched to Formula E with Mercedes. De Vries continued his career in this series between 2019 - 2021 as Stoffell Vandoorne's teammate and became the Formula E World Champion in 2021. In 2022, he participated in F1 Free Practice sessions with various teams. Finally, his luck turned for the Italian Grand Prix (ran in Monza) as the Williams driver, Alexander Albon, ended up hospitalized, and he came in to replace him for the weekend on loan from Mercedes. After proving himself in both the Qualifying session and the race, also with the support of his compatriot Max Verstappen, De Vries finally found himself a race seat for the 2023 season with a full-time contract from Alpha Tauri. Red Bull is also an open option for Nyck's future, as it seems. It's very likely, especially when he has his compatriot Max Verstappen's full support. Now, about his personality and looks: De Vries has a tiny figure and a warm smile. He is often very friendly and kind. I wish him the best of luck for his first season in F1 and hope he scores his first points very soon.

Oscar Piastri:

And at last, it's our clean-faced boy Oscar Piastri's turn. He is the youngest diver on our grid. His full name is Oscar Jack Piastri, and he was born on the 6th of April in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia. Piastri is technically the first F1 driver born in the 21st century, as he was born in 2001. Although he originally started his racing career with national leagues for remote-controlled cars in Australia, the young driver started kart racing in 2011 when he was 10. In 2016, Piastri found a racing seat in the UAE Formula 4 and completed the championship in 6th place with two podiums. A company that his father founded became his first sponsor. In 2017, Oscar found himself in British Formula 4, finishing the season in 2nd place with six wins & six pole positions. Piastri, who participated in GP3 (Formula 3 today) testing sessions in 2018, found his home in Formula Renault Eurocup. He completed this championship in 9th place with three podiums. Oscar continued his run in Formula Renault Eurocup in 2019 with a different team and became the year's champion. After the FR Eurocup Championship, Piastri found his home in FIA Formula 3 and became Frederik Vesti & Logan Sargeant's teammate. He completed the 2020 season ahead of his teammates and his main rival Theo Pourchaire and claimed the F3 title. That way, he moved up to Formula 2 in 2021. The young driver who finished the season as the champion also became one of the few drivers who claimed the F2 title in their rookie season, along with Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Hulkenberg, Charles Leclerc, and George Russell. As he couldn't find himself a racing seat for 2022, Piastri became Alpine's reserve driver. After ending his reserve contract with Alpine eventfully during the 2022 summer break, the young driver signed into McLaren for the 2023 season. Now, about his personality: he is generally quiet, calm, and reserved. But his cute smile, indeed, pulls some attention. We wish the young Australian the best of luck and congratulate his first points scored in his home race.

Be My Favorite - Ep 1 Thoughts

I haven’t started BMF yet because Jittirain reasons and I honestly didn’t think I would watch it at all but I’ve heard some things about it that have me intrigued enough to give it a shot and I thought why not liveblog it? So here we go:

-Hijabs! Love that so, so much. More of that please and thank.

-I’m not typically a fan of shows beginning with voice overs like this and I don’t particularly like it here either.

-Pearmai is just as sweet as can be. I see why Kawi likes her.

-I do not understand this secret buddy thing but Kawi is very lost for Pearmai and I get it. But also she does not return those feelings.

-Dear Kawi, let me introduce to a concept called handmade gifts

-I know what’s gonna happen with his dad and it’s gonna be so sad.

-Why lie about being her secret buddy? I don’t get it but okay.

-Also it seems like Kawi hated Pisaeng before that because he was well liked and popular, but I would like to point out that Kawi was also invited to do things by the girls in his class and was treated with kindness so my guy really just likes the feelings of self hatred that he has. He’d rather wallow in a pity party than tell Pearmai that he’s her secret buddy but the gift broke. Like my dude, she was so sweet that she was fine with Pisaeng just taking her out for a meal. Do you really think she would have cared about a broken gift? You don’t actually like her cause you don’t see her. You like the version of her you’ve invented in your head in order to justify your own shame spirals.

-Is Kawi working on subtitling F4?

-My guy, my dude, you have a steady job, a roof over your head, and food to eat. You can change those others things if you just leave your apartment and talk to people. Shit even I have friends and I do my best to never leave my place.

-Literally throwing himself a pity party while AT a party. My guy, there are friends for you literally RIGHT THERE. Just talk to them. The fuck? Your 30 and never got past the broken thing?

-If you’re not the person you want to be then you gotta work on becoming that person. It’s not just gonna magically happen. Geez my guy you need someone to shake some sense into you.

-Oh there’s the time travel.

-Do I..do i like a Jittirain seme?

-Did Kawi steal Pisaeng’s clothes? What in the childish behavior from this grown ass adult?

-Is he now stealing from Pisaeng? We’re supposed to hate him right cause I hate him.

-I hate to admit it but that’s how I dance too. Ask any of my friends.

-Whelp. I’ll watch the next episode at some point today but Kawi is a lot to deal with early on a Sunday morning. I love Pisaeng though which is extremely weird considering it’s Jittirain. I don’t know what’s happening but I’m confused

I tried watching the 2009 K-drama of Boys Over Flowers, but unfortunately by the fourth episode I decided to drop it because it just felt like a bad attempt at recreating the 2005 J-drama while also attempting and failing to create a new backstory for Tsukushi. I tried to write a post about why exactly I didn't like it, actually, but I shelved it because honestly, it was difficult to put into words why everything about it felt so wrong, but like. It did, and I dropped it

Anyway, I went on to try the other HYD adaptation on Netflix, which is the 2018 Chinese Meteor Garden. Going into it, I mostly just knew it was gonna kinda write out the bullying thing, and also that apparently Yoko Kamio really likes that version in particular anyway? So like, I didn't really know what to expect... But ngl, I was not expecting to like and respect it as much as I do

First of all!!! It is undoubtedly the adaptation with the most true-to-manga version of events, which. While I actually really enjoy the weird timeline mashup of the J-drama, after reading the manga I definitely really did wish to see a version that didn't cut out Kazuya and Kinsan, among other things, but yeah honestly I just really wanted to see these two lmao

It also??? Does a fantastic job at creating new things (they might have been in the OG Meteor Garden but I didn't watch that so,,) and adapting to the weird censorship around the instigating events of the story in a way that's genuinely so fun, while also managing to find ways to keep the characterizations of the characters that very easily could've been lost when taking out the whole malicious and violent nature of the F4. It does GREAT character work in general!! Li Zhen being a Makiko-turned-Sakurako as opposed to just erasing Makiko (which I still find hilarious considering the manga literally acknowledges that) by introducing Sakurako in her place is such a unique and fantastic solution to get around the bullying again while giving her a new, sympathetic motivation that feels much more in tune with this less extravagant (as in, making it just slightly less about the class disparity lol) version of the story, and!! As much as I love Sakurako, I feel like I appreciate Li Zhen just as much for like,, losing herself over her jealousy, and coming out of the whole ordeal as a much more confident person who's able to be a better, more proactive friend. Their motives and backgrounds are different, but the results end up roughly the same, and! I'm fine with, heck, I actually rather like Li Zhen not being the cackling narcissistic love rival (as much as that's probably like, my favorite trope), it works well for the story and she's portrayed really well by her actress!

Also, as expected, I love Qinghe, he's my boy!!! God fr I simply do not understand why Kazuya is only a part of the Meteor Garden adaptations of the story, he's so fucking great and it's heartbreaking that he got taken out of most of the adaptations when you can see how much he adds to the dynamic. Like, fr, Kazuya and Tsukasa competing over fishing is so iconic, it's such a dumb, joyous thing they do, like, peak of what "boys will be boys" should be, and!!! As expected it's SUCH a fun thing to see adapted

Kazuya being the loveable loser comic relief added so fucking much to the manga, because like, fr, both of the versions that I've seen that cut him are infinitely more depressing to watch!! He's so important to preserving the emotional balance of the story, not to mention how much better the story feels when Tsukushi DOES have an actual, genuine friend that goes to Eitoku with her. J-drama Tsukushi hangs out with Yuki and Okami A LOT to make up for the lack of any supportive people in her school life outside of F4, and without Kazuya around, ultimately, Tsukushi is definitely less close to the F4 than she is in the manga where his hijinks allow them to genuinely become friends, and the K-drama just didn't have any fun(ny) characters to replace him and it made it so difficult to watch!!! But Qinghe is such a bro, he's just as fun as I expected him to be if not *more*, and! Him being included makes such a huge positive difference

So far, the K-drama is obviously my least favorite adaptation, but I'm genuinely having trouble deciding whether I like the Japanese or Chinese one better, because both offer very different things and I actually love both!! The Japanese version is definitely like,,, the easier version for me to connect to, just because I already know the character names, and the jokes and most of the plot is consistent with the tone of the manga because it's the same setting (my very basic knowledge of Japanese definitely helps too lmao), but. The Chinese version is more fun to watch by virtue of being less depressing (fr, Kazuya makes ALL the difference), which also in a way makes it easy to get invested in it

Overall I'm actually very happy with what I've seen from Meteor Garden so far (I'm about halfway through it rn), and it's great to have another version of the story to cycle through because HYD has very quickly become one of my comfort media

Notes: Since I’ve just started watching BLs this year, this list will also include some non-2022 shows that I’ve just watched this year.

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?

KinnPorsche and Not Me. Needless to say anything more about these two shows, I guess. Both had me on a chokehold for different reasons. Both put me into an emotional state to which I needed weeks to recover from.

What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?

Vice Versa, in terms of story development. Although, I need to say that everything about the premise, the colors, the setting, and the music are one of the best that I watched this year. Aesthetically, this show was a delight to watch.

What has been your favorite BL this year?

The Eclipse. Well, if you followed me during The Eclipse period, you would know how much I loved the show and went crazy head over heels about it. This one is so special for me, and I hold very dear forever in the safety of my pocket. I’ve started getting interested in the show after watching the special episode in which the casts and the crews talked about the main idea of the show, that basically centered on telling a story about a country analogous to a school, which intrigued me. And once the show started, it was indeed proven to tell its story in that exact manner. Also, here I get to see First and Khaotung, both finally in lead roles and did amazing job! I’ve had a crush on First’s acting since he played a guest/support role in F4 Thailand and Not Me; and Khaotung’s since I watched him as Longtae in ATOTS. After The Eclipse, I followed through both their past works, and I just can’t say how happy I am knowing that I could possibly see them again next year in Only Friends. In short, The Eclipse is everything to me 🤍

If you had to suggest a BL for someone, what would it be?

This is hard. I don’t think I can recommend only one. My personal first choice would be Kieta Hatsukoi, which brought me into the BL universe earlier this year. And then, Bad Buddy, A Tale of Thousand Stars, Semantic Error, Not Me, Manner of Death, and Old Fashion Cupcake. I know this rec doesn’t cover everything there are but maybe for a start.

What's your non-BL favorite for this year?

55:15 Never Too Late. An ultimate favorite! If you haven’t watched this, and if a bit of slice of life genre is kind of your thing, please consider giving this one a try. This show about life and dealing with regrets from different perspectives of five people was really good!

well, i'll get to it then. the rainbow is answered so i'll just do the other two! i will /try/ to be concise but again, no promises.

💞what's the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language

considering who's asked this question, i suppose the fun answer would be vibes. and i guess that encapsulates what is the most important part to me---the mood, the tone, the themes they just need to feel right to me. i personally enjoy writing more emotional, character study-esque, introspective fics which is partially from my literature background in literary analyses. don't get me wrong, plot and characters and world-building is fun and all, but i think the emotional crux of the fic is most important to me which is why my tags are less technical or setting-based, and more like 'angst' or 'hurt/comfort' which tends to deal with the emotional gravitas of the work.

i think part of this is done through figurative language, so language is important to me. i think, first and foremost, i'm a poet and that translates to my prose and my fics, which tend to be more poetic, metaphorical filled with grandeur; purple prose if you will.

so yay emotions!

so this is chapter 8 of the office au i've been writing for f4! i'm pretty far through but im still sorting out some plot details and trying to find time to write it all!

so this is my uber-fave (and only) fiery priest fic that im hella obsessed with right now and i'm soooo close to finishing chapter 4 i just need to power through for a couple hours and i should be done.

as for my up and coming work(s), i have lots of fun things !

these two are what i like to call my sister fics. they're the folklore and evermore if you will. the sidecouple angst in two different flavours. if you've read beware the villainess, the first is like where she finally manages to get him freed, a post canon work, and the second as the title states, is canon divergence and still angsty but more adultier flavoured. more hurt.

World of K-dramas

Hi, I'm Alexis, and welcome to my blog where I talk about my favorite K-dramas! All my friends know that I'm a K-drama addict. If someone asks for a recommendation, I immediately pull out my list of over 40 K-dramas that I've watched. I started to watch them in 2017, and although I haven't seen as many recent ones, I have watched most of the classics. Throughout my blog, I will focus on a variety of K-dramas and discuss their plots and my reviews, so I hope you keep reading! :)

*Spoilers ahead*

Boys Over Flowers

The first K-drama I ever watched. I somehow came across the drama called "Boys Over Flowers" and something about the cheesy plot line had me hooked. I ended up watching it about 3 times and constantly listened to the soundtrack. Looking back, I think the story is pretty cringey, but at the time, I thought it was the best thing ever. 'Boys Over Flowers' became highly recognized in Korea and others countries, so adaptions have been made in China, Japan, and Thailand.

Plotline

Jan Di is the daughter of poor dry-cleaning business owners who suddenly receives a swimming scholarship to a prestigious high school after saving a student's life. The school has a group known as F4, the four richest boys at the school, who take pride in bullying other students that get in their way. Jan Di tries to avoid trouble and stay away from them, but is forced to intervene when her friend spills ice cream on the 'leader,' Joon Pyo. He is taken by surprise and angry, so he tells the other students to bully her, however, she stands up for herself. Joon Pyo eventually starts to fall for Jan Di and tries to win her over but she declines his efforts. During this time, Jan Di begins to develop feelings for another member of F4, who also likes her. Jan Di has chemistry with both leads, however, she grows closer to Joon Pyo after getting a job as a maid in his house. Joon Pyo's mother discovers his feelings towards Jan Di but disapproves of the relationship because of her family status and background. She does everything in her power to prevent the relationship, even going as far as arranging a marriage. The girl is actually very kind and likes Joon Pyo, but gives up when she realizes his genuine feelings towards Jan Di. On the day of their graduation, Joon Pyo proposes to Jan Di in the place where they had their first date, but she tells him she will consider if he comes back from his study abroad trip as a better man. She also does not want to back away from her dream of becoming a doctor. The drama ends with Joon Pyo coming back after four years and proposing on the beach near the hospital where she was working. However, right before she is about to answer, the other members of F4 run up to them and the last scene is of them laughing together on the beach.

My Thoughts

Looking back, 'Boys Over Flowers is definitely one of the cheesiest K-dramas I've watched. Once I started watching more K-dramas, I realized the better quality ones were made after 2015, however, I'll give it some slack since it was made in 2009. Though Joon Pyo had a lot of character development throughout the show, I think he could have had a better personality to begin with. For this reason, many people argue that Jan Di should have ended up with the second lead since he was always kind. I also slightly agree with this but ended up rooting for the main lead since I thought he was better-looking. I do not think I could watch 'Boys Over Flowers' all the way through again for many reasons, but it was such a turning point for me at the time so it will always have a special place in my heart.

Last post for the f4 catch-up! This scene-

-encapsulates my biggest issue with this franchise. They don't properly acknowledge the borderline abusive behaviour. Considering Thyme's messed up childhood and his emotionally unstable state the agression does make sense. It's very much in-character, his growth so far doesn't erase the fact he has severe anger issues. The problem isn't that this scene exists but that they don't ever acknowledge it later on. That Gorya and him go right back to how they were without so much as talking about the fact that he almost hit her. Or that she expected him to.

Hana Yori Dango is essentially a Pride and Prejudice meets Beauty and the Beast plot. It combines the "rich asshole falls for poor woman with attitude" trope with the "beastly man is tamed by strong-willed woman" trope. But the issue is that it sorely misunderstands why the original stories work. The whole point of Pride and Prejudice was that Darcy wasn't an asshole, he just seemed like it because of his inability to navigate social situations politely. The entire reason Elizabeth thinks so poorly of him for so long is because he's too proud to explain himself and his intentions for too long and she's too prejudiced against him to see the reality of the situation. On the same vein, the Beast in Beauty and the Beast is generally very courteous towards Belle. He doesn't force himself on her, he respects her wishes and he supports her passion. Both Darcy and the Beast are good love interests because they are fundamentally misunderstood and aren't actually assholes. That's why they don't actively need to be redeemed, because they didn't actually go around doing terrible things.

On the other hand when you have a character like Thyme who did actively hurt your protagonist, the redemption must properly acknowledge past faults and show proper communication between both parties for it to be a stable relationship. Because otherwise you're just romanticising abusive and toxic behaviours. Not having them address Thyme's near act of violence against Gorya means brushing aside a glaring sign of future abuse. They should not just have them go back to dating after something like that. There needs to be a conversation. He needs to apologise for losing control, for scaring her, he needs to acknowledge what happened was terrible and should never happen again and then they need to show him actively working to make sure that it doesn't. The abusive behaviour needs to be left behind before they enter into a relationship.

You could say oh Jahnvi it's just a silly romance why does it matter? It matters because kids watch this, young girls all around the world grow up on these shows. Teenage girls with low self-esteem who just want to be special watch these shows with all this toxic messaging and internalise it. They think jealousy is a sign of love because that's what the romances portray, and they excuse rampant acts of aggression because they feel that love means accepting your partner's flaws. Even when the flaw is that they literally hurt you. I grew up surrounded by girls who would trap themselves in toxic relationships with shitty men because they thought it was the right thing. Because they have this insanely skewed sense of what romantic love looks like. I've had to sit back and watch more friends than I can count cry about how they wasted so much time and effort on men who manipulated and controlled them, men who wouldn't just let them go when they wanted to end things. And you know they all grew up loving these kinds of stories. It matters that we don't keep telling these same toxic stories over and over again because I'm tired of picking up the phone at four am to hear one of my closest friends have a breakdown over some man who doesn't deserve shit.

Anyway, this got a bit rant-y so I'll end the post with the thought I was trying to get to- f4 has handled a lot of things better than I expected them to so I truly hope that they had the good sense in the year 2021 to actively show the audience that hey this is abusive and it's not okay. If they brush this aside I wouldn't be entirely surprised but I will be insanely disappointed because I really want to be past the point where we just let abuse slide.

Boyfriend is back AKA Ren, the home wrecker

This post is a summary of all the reasons why we don't stan Ren on this blog, made especially for my besties and BFF @crazybooksandplantslady

I was rewatching F4 Thailand again, (what even is life at this point if I don't breathe this show) and realised that while Ren is packaged as the nice one, who interacts with Gorya from the beginning and one could easily be swayed into supposing he is a good dude because of it; he is a dog that bites.

See, Gorya piques his interest in the same way that she astounds Thyme.

Ren encounters the behind the scene rebellion prior to the rebellion taking place, and it surely must be intoxicating to watch a young girl disrupt status quo and fight for her rights. She encompasses everything he is not.

Ren doesn't fight for his love, he waits in a passive manner for it to come to him and for Mira to serve herself up on a golden plate. He does not even participate in most of the F4 shenanigans; he goes with the flow for the most part.

It does not mean though he is a positive character, even if he hides Gorya from the bullies, he does nothing actively to prevent her from being bullied until she is literally being r-word.

Ren has spectacular looks and I for one do appreciate the visuals, I blame it on my love of drawing, I consider myself a beauty connoisseur -probably because I lack it, I crave it. LOL.

But Ren toys with her feelings, and while Thyme is waging a war against Gorya for the first few episodes, until he realises he is actually in love with her lol, plot twist-Ren knows that Ren is in love with Mira, but allows these seductive-open to interpretation-interactions to fester between him and Gorya.

I don’t like it.

I do no appreciate the feeble character that Ren posses, where he has to be kicked to the kerb to realise he could actually go after Mira and declare how he feels about her. Fear of rejection my friends is a bastard and we all know that.

BUT Compare how incredibly brave foolish Thyme is when in love.

Granted an utter dumb fool with no backbone yet, but how brave is he putting himself out there for Gorya after they have been full blown enemies and does these ridiculous gestures that slowly and gradually become less unhinged, the more she reciprocates his feelings.

The fact is that the show portrays the confusion and blurred lines between liking someone and admiring someone well. There is a huge difference in having a crush on a pretty boi (Ren) and being your true self with someone and sharing insecurities with them.

Gorya does is very well, she looks at Ren as a god send when he shows up and saves her. The sight of him getting drenched by setting off the fire alarm is still my weak moment and my ass popped open a little. Sorry lesbians.

However, the tonal shift in her interactions with Thyme go from

->absolute spite and resistance against him-> rejecting everything he stands for-> physical violence -> defiance -> sworn enemies ->

raging war-> carnage when he abducts her-> shitting on his morals -> asking him to do things like normal person lol-> accidental kiss ->

ok he touched my forehead -> umm why is Thyme touching my hair again is he about to -> false alarm ->

OMG Thyme at my house -> OMG Thyme is an abandoned puppy-> OMG he hugged me-> why is he so soft I will d word -> I need him for no particular reason his opinion matters all of a sudden -> you see what I mean???

You were sprinting through the forest gripping the blaster in your right hand until your knuckles turned white. The leaves and fallen branches crunch under your feet as you run towards the transport ship hovering above the surface, ready for take-off. The white troopers were hot on your tail firing blasters at your head but missing, as usual. You had been successful in your mission and were about to get off this stupid planet and away from the enemy. You just about reached the ship and had your hand reached out to another Rebel when a hard grip was around your ankle, “go” you said to the familiar face. Looking down at your captor all you saw was the end of a blaster inches from your head.

You wake up sweaty and panting like you do most mornings you actually get to sleep. Another nightmare. You rose out of your small cot in a room you rent from a nearby merchant who was kind enough to let you stay. You had your own room and fresher but shared a kitchen, you were almost always working or at the cantina anyways. You had often thought about the beskar wearing warrior since he left many months ago, remembering the low baritone of his voice and that stupid nickname he had for you, kid. It made your ears burn just at the thought of it. You weren't a kid by any means but he saw you as one for some reason. You had thought about the possibility that he thought that because he might be much older than you but you weren't sure. You knew nothing about the masked man, you didn't even see a patch of bare skin the whole two days you were around him.

You tried to shake him from your thoughts as you got ready for another day of organizing and hauling junk. There were many people who scavenged for scraps left by the ships that crashed after the Empire fell, on the outskirts of the planet. You were the person that organized it by use or material to resell or melt down. Sometimes you managed the selling booth and helped customers find what they needed. Your boss was kind of an ass, but you made decent money considering, so you kept the job.

You heard your name being shouted from the back of the hut. “I need you to drop off this part to docking bay F4, he paid us lots of money for a quick delivery so get moving!”

You huffed in frustration while taking the case of parts from your boss and started walking to the docking bay. The case started to get quite heavy so you decided to sit down for a few minutes halfway there. You propped up your chin in your hands as you watched the various pilots work on their ships when suddenly your vision was covered by some sort of cloth and your arms were being tied around your back. Before you could get your bearings, the sharp sting of something being struck down on the back of your head made your body go limp.

The cloth bag being ripped off your head allowed the dim light of the room to stun your eyes. As your senses came in to focus you felt the rough rope tight around your wrists and the two men in front of you.

“Alright princess, we know you saw the Madolorian and his little friend, where did he go?”

“I don't know what youre talking about.” You spit back.

The man pulled out a blaster and pushed it right to your temple, causing your so already present anger to boil. “Look bitch, I have no problem killing you if you don't give me what I want.”

“Is that how you charm all the ladies?” With that, the backside of his blaster connected with your right temple. With blood running down to your cheek, you shot him a look that could light a man on fire. Silently struggling behind your back you felt the rope loosen just enough to give you some hope in your situation.

Amatures.

“I heard from a lot of people in this shithole town that you were with the man in beskar. Now I am being paid lots of money to find that little green thing and I want my money. So talk!”

At this point you're glad you knew nothing about the two so you physically wouldn't be able to tell this scum anything. “Look man, I know nothing about him, ok, he came for repairs and that's it… and by the way anyone after a child, is the worst the galaxy has to offer.” This resulted in another hard strike but to the abdomen this time, and with a fist. A laugh escaped your lungs as you looked up at him with blurred vision. “If this is your idea of torture, you must not be the proffessional I thought you were.” You could feel your hands gaining more freedom as you wiggled them free, but waited to do anything about it until you could catch them off guard.

After a few more hits here and there, the two men became frustrated with your lack of information. As you spit some blood out of your mouth and rolled your head back in pain one of the men left the room. ‘This is my chance’ you thought, you remembered the small but very sharp shiv-like weapon you keep in your right boot. The man left turned to rest both hands on the table on the other side of the room. As quiet as humanly possible you dropped the rope from your wrists and used your left hand to lift the right pant leg away from where the dagger rested. You quietly walked up to the man behind his back and trusted the shiv as hard as you could into his right side, just below his last rib. Taking the knife with you, you ran as fast as your legs could carry you out the door, quickly realizing you were on their ship, it was small but still confusing. Once you made it down the ramp of their ship, that they just left open, you spotted the other man walking towards you, he had food in his hands that he quickly dropped and ran after you.

“Shit.” you cursed to yourself as you sprinted in the other direction towards the rest of the docking bay. With adrenaline clouding every one of your senses you twist back to see if the man is close behind but end up running into something very solid instead.

“Hey kid.” You hear that beautiful and familiar low rumble of a voice in front of you. “What happened to you?” His head tilted to examine your face.

“Dank Farrik...ok follow me.” he took your arm and led you to his ship that was parked just a few spots over. You felt safe with him, knowing that no one messes with a Mandalorian. You both made it safely inside the Razor Crest and he sat you down on a crate to tend to your wounds. He grabbed a medic bag and nestled himself between your knees to take a look at your face. The armored man grabbed clean cloth and backta spray to fix the large cut on your temple, that was the largest of the wounds, other than that it was brouzes and a small cut on your lip.

“Hey if I'm now getting beaten up for you, can I at least know your name?” You winced as he sprayed the affected area with backta.

“You can call me Mando. You must have put up quite the fight.” He notices the bloodied shiv in your right hand.

“A girl has to learn to take care of herself.” You gave him a small smile and he gave a small exhale almost like he was laughing. “I served in the Rebel Alliance. I was a spy. This wasn't my first rodeo.” You remembered your dream from last night, that now felt like an eternity ago. It had been years since your stay on the Empire base but the memory of it often visited you in sleep.

He paused for a moment, almost in shock. “We have to leave. If either of us stay here we are dead. They won’t stop until they have the child.” Relief washed over you, mostly because you were out of the grasp of those two but also that you were finally getting away from this dust-ball planet.

the curious case of the renault sport academy: an essay

alternatively titled: the essay i wasn’t going to write about the mess of the rsa but here it is anyway, supported by facts (also titled: the curious case of anthoine & guanyu)

some standard background: rsa started in 2016, they organise training camps occasionally (tho not so much what with covid) that consist of a lot of cycling. so much cycling they all cry about it. they currently have 6 drivers signed to their academy of which one is a notable outlier - guanyu zhou. the other boys signed have all won titles at one point. guanyu has not. in fact, his best championship result was a second place in 2015, he has not placed higher than 6th since. now, renault is known for snatching up title winners, the winner of formula renault would get signed to the academy (like max fewtrell, oscar piastri) and they’ve picked up some other promising guys as well, signing them to the academy straight away.

if we count back to 2019, another curious addition adds itself to the academy. actually should say 2018 because that’s where it gets interesting. anthoine’s results in 2017 weren’t mind blowing, he didn’t score a single win but did manage to get a couple fastest laps to find himself in 4th position at the end of the year. renault invent a new role, designed specifically for anthoine as he was the first driver to carry this role: affiliate driver. it’s not quite being signed to the academy, he doesn’t run a renault livery, merely has renault on the rear wing (and ART ran an altered livery for 2 other renault kids in f3 the following year), but he does get to go on training camps. it’s a sort of halfway signing, and while i have not been able to find any proof for this, i suspect they told him to win the gp3 title for an actual signing (stick, meet carrot) or get dropped. as we know, he did win and he did get the full signing, black and yellow suit included.

the only other affiliate i’ve been able to find was leonardo lorandi in early 2019, around the same time anthoine got ‘promoted’ for lack of a better word. lorandi didn’t do so well however (18th place in the championship that year) and i haven’t heard anything about him so i suspect he’s just kind of disappeared. definitely was not added to the academy. begs the question, if you want to have a junior program filled with talented drivers and you have someone with better results than one you already signed. why the hassle? why sign guanyu with no outstanding results since 2015, but invent a whole new role for anthoine with a better result in 2017 and a title to his name (french f4 2013)? i’m gonna take an educated guess and say the answer is money.

moving on, there’s also the matter of renault dropping drivers like hot potatoes at a fairly similar rate to red bull, if i’m honest. guys in the academy in 2018 were long gone by the time 2019 rolled around. ye yifei was a newly signed member of the rsa in 2019, a new signing for placing third in formula renault the previous year. he had a dreadful season in f3 and was consequently dropped. he then finished second in f3 asia (late 2019/early 2020) and went on to win euroformula open in 2020. not a bad driver, right. victor martins, too. his name might sound familiar if you’ve watched formula renault in 2020, because he became champion. the year before that, runner up in formula renault (to oscar piastri). renault dropped him anyway, presumably because he did not win the title. very interested to see if they’re gonna have to sign him again because he won. anyway, i digress.

rumour’s been going around that max fewtrell and hadrien david will both be dropped from the academy for not acquiring results expected of them. in this i would just like to point out that hadrien is literally 16 and this was his second season of single seaters, and he was a total rookie in formula renault. most recent formula renault champions (max fewtrell, oscar piastri, victor martins) required 2 years to get up to speed in that category. hadrien placed tenth in a field of 22, so not entirely dreadful. max fewtrell’s season was just a disaster all around and given that he has 2 titles to his name (2016 and 2018), i wouldn’t go ahead and call him a bad driver. now i have no clue what happened or why he and hitech decided to part ways before spa but it’s pretty obvious he wasn’t feeling good in that team.

THEN there’s also the matter of the rsa director saying everyone did a fuckin terrible job except oscar. https://formulaspy.com/f1/renault-we-expected-more-from-our-junior-drivers-73087 ‘not mad just disappointed’ vibes.

in short, the rsa just feels like a giant mess and like they’re desperately trying to gather whichever driver is hot topic at the moment and then dropping them without hesitation when they don’t perform up to standard. do they even get support aside from the cycling bootcamps? and WHAT are they even gathering them for, considering there’s the ongoing issue of no renault seats ever going to a member of their academy. my professional conclusion is this: FUCK renault. thank u for ur attention
