You had known Kelly Severide ever since you were both kids, considering you were next door neighbors. You didn't have the best childhood and needed a friend and you found that in Kelly. You two had grown up and had been there for each other through thick and thin. Through bad breakups with shitty boyfriends and girlfriends. You shut down all the rumors going around about Kelly even though you probably knew they were true especially with him being a womanizer, but you had to defend your friend and crush.
——————————————————————
Middle school hit and your friendship was stronger than ever and you two had stayed thick as thieves no matter how popular he had become. When his girlfriend, and also the captain of the soccer team, tried to get him to stop hanging around you because she didn't like you, he immediately broke up with her. One particular night they yelling and the fighting got so bad at your house that it became physical and your father had hit you and then threw a plate against the wall, breaking it and some of it cut you. Your mother tried to stop it but your father turned on her and she looked at you with a particular look and you ran, you ran to Kelly. When he saw you and the shape you were in, he grew furious but he took you up to your room and cleaned you up and held you that night.
——————————————————————
When high school came around your friendship and crush were still going strong. It became normal around the school to see each other with each other, so normal that his friends started becoming your friends and vice versa. Around sophomore year a particularly bad night occurred over at the Y/L/N Household. Your mother had just passed away due to some complications from the abuse your father had laid on her, the next day your father started to drink heavily starting in the morning and didn't end at all. You had just come home from school to find your father sitting at the kitchen table drinking. “About time you came home.” He said with a bite in his tone.
“I was at school.” You said slightly trembling. Your father looked up at you in rage.
“From now on you're not going to school. You're staying here.” He said not really in the right mental state.
“Dad, I can't do that. I need to go to school.” You said you wanted Kelly.
“Not anymore. Now make dinner.” He said harshly.
“No, Dad. I have homework to do and I promised Kelly I would meet up with him to help him.” You said and the anger flashed through your father’s face.
“You're always with him. Kelly this, Kelly that. I bet you've probably fucked him you slut.” He said and that brought tears to your eyes.
“No, I haven't.” You said “I'm not with him.” You added and your dad scoffed.
“Whatever. Now, get to cleaning this place is dirty and cooking. I'm hungry.” He spoke
“No, I need to do homework and then meet Kelly. I've told you this.” You said something must've snapped in him because he was suddenly picking up his glass and throwing it at you. It grazed you and hit the wall exploding in a million pieces and most of those cut you and you ducked for cover. Your dad stalked over to you and grabbed you by the hair and slammed you up against the wall he was yelling and threatening you. Tears were coming out fast.
“Stop you're crying.” He said and punched you in the face and you cradled your face and that just made him grow angrier. He slammed your head into the wall and then threw you down onto the ground. He kicked you twice in the ribs, breaking some, and several in the stomach. There were plates on a shelf next to you and he reached over and pulled that down over you, they broke all over you and cut you. You were sure you were bloody and not a very good sight to look at. You were close to passing out and you just wanted Kelly.
“Kelly.” You mumbled and your dad rolled his eyes.
“There you go saying his name. He can't save you now.” Your dad said and then brought his boot cover foot and it connected it with your head and that brought stars to your vision. Kelly, you wanted Kelly and now. Your dad finally stopped his attack on you and then stormed away, grabbed his keys and left considering you heard his truck start up. He left the door standing wide open.
Kelly had just gotten home from his baseball practice when he noticed your car in the driveway but not your dad's. He also noticed the door left wide open and that made his stomach drop. He quickly pulled into your driveway and got out and rushed in and the scene before his eyes made his blood boil. You were laid there in a pool of your own blood and semi-conscious. “Son of a bitch.” He said to himself he made it very clear that he didn't like your dad early on. “Hey, Angel. Wake up for me. Please.” Kelly said while stroking your cheek but nothing had worked. “You’re really scaring me.” He said. You heard a voice and it sounded like Kelly’s.
“Kel?” You asked, slurring your words and eyes cracking open. You saw him crouching down in front of you.
“Yea, it's me.” He said
“Dad-” You began but he shushed you.
“I know, Angel. I know.” He said smiling sadly and then pulled out his phone. “I’m gonna call 911. Just hang tight.” He said and you just stared at him everything sounded underwater. You could hear him talking but couldn’t pay attention. Your eyes started to close “Hey, hey, hey. Keep those eyes open for me.” He said but they were already shutting “Y/N-” he said and the last thing you heard before you let the darkness win.
The next thing you remember was waking up in the hospital with Kelly asleep by your side. You hurt all over and you vowed to yourself that you would become a paramedic to help people in need. You tried sitting up and groaned and that is what woke him up. “Woah. Hey. It’s ok, Angel.” He said and got up helped you lay back down.
“Dad?” You asked and he smiled sadly.
“He was found with his truck wrapped around a tree, he survived and when he gets healthy enough, he is going to prison.” He said and you nodded and then your eyes were closing. “Go to sleep, Angel. I’ll be right here.” He said and you let your eyes slip closed.
“I love you, Kel. More than a friend.” You said and he smiled.
“I love you too. More than a friend.” He repeated and you smiled and then fell asleep. When you woke up again, he brought up what you said and told him it was true and he smiled and told you that he felt the same way. From that day you two started to date.
——————————————————————
When you both graduated high school you decided to follow Kelly everywhere and owed him your life because he saved your life. You ended up going with him to the fire academy and excelling through it and had graduated as a paramedic and him as a firefighter. After graduation he had proposed to you and it was an immediate yes.
Considering that you both had gotten engaged you both followed each other through the different firehouses and both ended up at Firehouse 51. When you got the position for a paramedic on Ambulance 61, he got his position on Rescue Squad 3 and you both were so happy. It was exciting and both were so happy.
Kelly and you had talked about kids and decided not to wait until you both were married and when it happened then it happened. You loved the thought of getting married but were happy to be engaged with the love of your life. Getting with you and getting engaged changed Kelly for the good, he stopped being a womanizer and he devoted himself to you and only you.
——————————————————————
You both had been sleeping soundly in your own bed at your house after being off for 3 days and having a lot of fun in the bedroom trying but not really trying for a child. Your alarm had gone off at 6:30 AM and you jolted awake. When you turned over and saw the time you groaned and shut the alarm off. “Is it time already?” Kelly asked with a gravely and sleep ridden voice and you smiled and rolled over looking at him. You didn’t have to go in until 8:00 AM.
“Sadly yes.” You said and kissed him and he returned the kiss. “But hey, we'll be with each other for the next 2 days.” You said and he smiled.
“That we will, Angel.” Kelly said and kissed you rolling over to where he was pinning you underneath him. The kissing got more intense and you were planning on letting it go further but you needed to get to work before Boden had both of your heads.
“As much as I want to continue this. We really need to get to work.” You said and he bowed his head and sighed in defeat. He knew you right.
“You’re always right.” He said and you smiled and kissed him again but he continued his attack on you.
“Kel.” You warned but he just continued his attack on your neck and then he was inching his way down your body until he got to the hem of his shirt that you stole from him. “Baby.” You moaned out and he smirked and went lower to your underwear cover pussy. He pushed your legs open and began kissing the inside of your thighs as he slid your underwear down your legs and threw them somewhere. Then he dove straight in and your head was thrown back “Kelly!” You shouted but turned into a moan. Your hands went to his head he licked a broad stripe up your folds as his hands kept your thighs spread. He swirled his tongue around your entrance and then bit your clit gently and that had you letting out a pornographic moan. Your back arched pleasure and that rubber band feeling was creeping up a tall tale sign you were about to cum. “I’m gonna cum.” You warned and he quickened his pace and when he sucked on your clit and gently bit it again for the second time had you coming undone. “I'm cumming!” You moaned out and that rubber band snapped and you saw stars. You came all over his face and he was licking it up like it was his last meal. When you came down from your high, he was sitting up and lying next to you. You laid there for a few minutes catching your breath “That was amazing.” You said and he smiled and leaned over and kissed you, you could taste yourself on his tongue.
“Have to take care of my girl.” He said after he broke the kiss and you smiled.
“Now we have to get ready.” You said and got up. He laid there watching you. Once you had disappeared into the bathroom, he and when he heard the shower running, he got up and smirked. He stripped off his sweats and underwear leaving him nude. He walked into the bathroom and when you heard the shower door open you smiled.
“Just couldn’t stand it could you?” You asked and he smirked.
“How can? Especially knowing my sexy fiancée is in here all alone and may need some assistance.” He said and you laughed as he started to finish what you had started and then it was your turn to help him. As you were soaping him up and rinsing him off you got down to his very erect and noticeable hard on, you smirked.
“Want me to help you with that?” You asked and he smirked.
“I would never say no to you.” He said and you smiled and he helped you ease your way down once he knew what you were doing. All soap was gone and both of you were clean but you always did enjoy standing there under the hot water. Your hand traveled down to his cock and pumped it while you kissed the tip and kitten licked it and that had him moaning. “Oh, Angel. That feels so good.” He said and you smirked and took the tip into your mouth and swirled it with your tongue and then you started moving your head up and down. Kelly’s head was thrown back in pleasure. One hand went to your head and the other braced himself on the shower wall. “Angel.” He moaned out. You kept changing your speed and then you hollowed your cheeks and took him deeper until he hit the back of your throat. You breathed through your nose “I’m close, Y/N/N.” He said and you knew it was true especially when your other hand that wasn’t on his cock went to his balls you felt them tightening up. What did him in was when you squeezed his cock and his balls at the same time “I’m cumming, Angel.” He moaned out and then his thick load shot into the back of your throat and you swallowed it all. When he was done you slowly drug your mouth off his cock and released him with a pop. He helped you stand up and kissed you tasting himself. You smiled at him “Thank you, Angel.” He said and tucked a piece of wet hair behind your ear.
“Anytime babe.” You said and then you both were getting out and getting ready. Once everything was ready to go you looked at your phone 7:20 AM it read and your eyes bugged out of your head.
“What is it, Angel?” He asked when he noticed your expression.
“We’re gonna be late.” You said and he smirked.
“Then let me drive.” He said and you groaned but agreed. You both walked out to his Jeep and he booked it to the firehouse. 7:50 AM, you had cut it close but now you felt nauseous.
“Never letting you drive again.” You said as you grabbed your bag.
“Oh, come on. I got us here on time.” He said and you just shook your head and the both of you headed in. Both of you put your bags in the locker room and went to hear the reports and once that was over your 2-day shift started.
6 hours into your shift nothing really exciting happened, just a few small calls that didn’t require everyone to go out. You were grateful for the silent morning and not much happening because that meant you could spend time with Kelly and plan your wedding with your bridesmaids, Sylvie Brett and Grabriela Dawson and maid of honor, Stella Kidd. “So, have you picked a color yet?” Sylvie asked.
“I have 2 picked out navy blue and sage green.” You said and she nodded.
“Oh, navy blue would look so pretty.” Stella said and you smiled as you flipped through some magazines. You were mid flip when Kelly walked into the room you looked up when you saw him coming over and kissed you.
“How is my beautiful fiancée doing?” He asked and you smiled and you could hear the girls aweing at you both and you rolled your eyes at them.
“Oh hush. I’m doing well. A little bit achy from the rambunctious patient we had last call.” You said and he gave you a look “Kel, I’m fine nothing major happened and we handled it.” You said and he eased up.
“You know I want you to be safe on every call.” He said and you nodded and watched him walk over to the fridge and grab two bottles of water and something to snack on and brought it to you. You gladly accepted them.
“You two are so adorable.” Gabby said and you chuckled and made room for Kelly to sit down and then you leaned into him and started flipping through the magazine again as he fed you some of his snack. “So, you have a cake picked out?” She asked and you nodded.
“We do. It’s a chocolate strawberry cake.” Kelly said “It’s her favorite and I want her to be happy on her special day.” He said and kissed your temple. You smiled and played with your engagement ring.
“Hey it’s your day too.” You argued and looked at him.
“Yes, but to me it’s going to be all about you and celebrating you being with me.” He said and again the girls awed at the both of you and again you rolled your eyes but smiled. The wedding talk continues and Kelly put his input in. When the urge to go to the bathroom was needed you got up and he whined. “Where are you going?” He asked pouting and you turned to him.
“I have to go to the bathroom, Babe. Unless you want to join.” You said as a joke and he started to get up but you stopped him “I was joking. I’ll be back soon.” You said and he pouted again.
“Fine. I’ll miss you.” He said and you laughed.
“I’ll be right back.” You said and the girls all laughed. You went to the bathroom and as you were washing your hands the bells rang signaling for Rescue Squad 3, Truck 81, Ambulance 61, and Engine 51. It must be serious if they were sending everyone out. You quickly rushed the ambulance and he stopped you before you got in and he kissed you hard and you returned the kiss. “I love you.” You said as you hopped into the vehicle.
“I love you too.” He said and then you both got in your vehicles and then you were off to the call. The call was made by a bystander that had witnessed a gang fight had taken place and there were some casualties but also some that needed medical attention as well as a fire that had broken out due to a bullet hitting a gas tank of a car. Intelligence was also called since it was their case they were working on. You were quick to jump out when the ambulance had stopped. Boden gave orders and everyone got to work. You, Sylvie, and Gabby along with Herrmann, Otis, Kelly, Brian and Peter moved people that needed serious attention to one place and the ones that didn't move to another then the deceased to another with sheets laying over them. Intelligence and other police officers were booking left and right. You had just finished with one patient when Jay grabbed your attention.
“Hey, Y/N! I need you over here!” He said and you rushed over with your bag. When you got there a man in his mid-20s was lying unconscious on the ground but breathing. You knelt down next to him and Jay. Jay was waiting to do anything to help.
“Sir, can you hear me?” You asked while taking a listen to him and everything sounded normal. You still hadn't gotten a response so you made your hand into a fist and rubbed his sternum. That definitely got a reaction out of him because before Jay could stop him, he had grabbed a knife that was in his back pocket and drove it first into your stomach. At first you didn't feel it and Jay was just shocked. You Felt it when the knife pulled out and found its way into your ribs. Jay took action and was quick to apprehend the person and cuff him. He called for someone to get the person off the ground and once they were gone Jay turned his direction to you.
“Hey it's ok. You're going to be ok.” Jay said as he started putting pressure on your wounds.
“Kelly. Want Kelly.” You mumbled out and Jay nodded and looked up looking for your fiancé and when he found him, he shouted his name.
“Kelly!” Jay shouted and that caused Kelly to look up and his face drained of color when he saw you on the ground with blood and Jay trying to help. He was rushing over to get to you.
“What the hell happened?” Kelly asked when he arrived and took over for Jay but Jay stayed close wanting to help his friends.
“I found a guy on the ground unconscious and called her over since she was available. She was checking on him and trying to wake him up and he woke up startled and took out a knife we both didn't see and stabbed her before I could do anything. He was quick and got a second stab in.” Jay said and Kelly nodded, not mad at anyone this could happen to anyone. He knew moving someone without knowing their injuries could end up making it worse for them.
“Kel?” You asked and he looked down and saw you staring at him with wild unfocused eyes. You looked so scared.
“I'm here, Angel. I'm here.” He said and pressed harder on your wounds. Blood was starting to seep out between his fingers. “Jay, go and get Sylvie and Gabby. Tell them it's Y/N. Tell them to bring the gurney and hurry.” He said and Jay nodded and went to find them.
“I'm sorry.” You said and Kelly looked at you confused.
“Why are you sorry?” He asked
“I didn't see the knife.” You said and he shook his head.
“Nobody could've seen it. You and Jay did the right thing in not moving him.” He said and you nodded and then you started coughing which brought blood and it was getting harder to breathe. “Hey hey, don't you give up on me yet.” He said and grabbed your gloved hand and he could feel your ring through it. He decided he needed to be skin to skin with you so he ripped the gloves off and your diamond ring was out on display for everyone to see.  “We have so many plans, Angel. Don't leave me.” He added you so desperately tried to keep your eyes open and you were winning the fight but barely.
“Oh my god.” Sylvie gasped and both her and Gabby got to work. The commotion caught the attention of a few others and they were quick to come over. “Hey, Y/N/N. Can you hear me?” Sylvie asked and you nodded your head and looked over at her.
“Kel?” You asked, losing a lot of blood.
“I'm right here, Y/N. I'm right here.” He said and your head lolled over to look at him. Then your eyes closed and your breathing stopped. “Y/N! No no no no.” Kelly said and removed his hands and started chest compression and that kicked everyone into gear. Gabby put a pulse ox on you and connected leads to you and it showed a flatline and tears came to Kelly's, well everyone's, eyes. “Come on. Come on.” He said and continued CPR. About 2 minutes later your heart started beating again and he sighed in relief. Gabby started an IV and Kelly’s hands went to the puncture wounds again.
Everyone started talking and then you felt yourself being lifted up and onto the gurney by several people. You were moving and it felt like you were floating. Nothing was in focus and every sound was underwater. You were loaded into the back of the ambulance and then you were speeding away. Kelly never once left your side and nobody argued with him.
Getting to Med felt like forever but it was only a short 3 minutes but in those 3 minutes Kelly's world stopped again. Your heart was beating strong and then all of a sudden it just stopped. Gabby was quick to start CPR again. “If we don't get her back soon, her chances to survive are low.” She said and just as soon as the ambulance pulled up to Med your heart started again. When the doors opened there was Connor and a few nurses standing there and as soon as the gurney was off the ambulance you were being wheeled away. Talking was heard but you couldn't focus on it. Your eyes were closed.
“Kelly, you know you can't go back with us.” Connor said
“I know. Just take care of her. Angel, I'll be here when you're done. Keep fighting.” Kelly said, bending down and kissing your forehead and then your ring. “I love you.” Kelly added as tears ran down his face and you were wheeled behind the door. Kelly just stood there not knowing what to do until Otis came behind him and grabbed his shoulders and led him to the waiting room. Before they wheeled you behind the doors, they had taken your engagement ring off and gave it to him. He looked up and saw most of everyone there but nobody said a word. He looked down at your engagement ring and just started to let tears escape. He needed you.
——————————————————————
“Alright I want a quick x-ray and an ultrasound then I want her prepped and quickly.” Conner said and everybody let him know that they understood and then they were on it. An x-ray was taken and the tech froze.
“Uh, Conner. I might want to come and take a look at this.” He said and Connor rushed over.
“She’s pregnant.” He confirmed “Someone call Dr. Manning. Tell her it is an emergency.” He said
“On it!” A nurse said and was quick to get her on the phone. In no time Natalie was rushing into the OR, she was getting the ultrasound up and running and was quick to get it on you.
“It looks like she is 9 weeks pregnant and it looks like the knife didn’t even touch the placenta but it looks like it caught her kidney.” She said “I’ll stay and monitor the baby.” She said and Connor nodded and started giving directions out. The surgery was stressful but it was coming along great. “The baby's heart rate and breathing are great.” Natalie said just about the time your heart rate was beginning to drop.
“Heart is dropping and her breathing is labored.” The surgical nurse said and that concerned both of the doctors. Then your heart monitor flatlined.
“Starting CPR!” Connor said and he started the chest compressions. “Come on, Y/N/N. You got a fiancé that is worried sick about you and a baby to grow and raise” he said and you must be listening because after about 3 minutes of CPR your heart started to beat again. “Ok, she’s back! Let’s hurry this and get her into recovery.” He said calmly and they finished quickly. They had to fix your lung and remove one of your kidneys but you were going to survive.
——————————————————————
4 hours is how long everyone had to wait. Your team members, who were your family, weren’t going to go anywhere especially not when one of their own was fighting for her life. Kelly was a nervous wreck and he hadn’t even said a word since he arrived, nobody was going to push him to talk. Boden had declared him off since it was his fiancée in there and that considered him family. Nobody had come out and whenever someone had come out it wasn’t Connor and his heart sank a little more each time. The plans that you two had made and planned on making were running through his head. He thought about starting a family with you and the wedding you two were going to have. As he was thinking about it all, he remembered your diamond ring in his hand, it shouldn’t be in his hand, it should be on your finger. He took one last look at it and then took his chain off around his neck and unclasped it and slid on it, he then put the chain back around his neck.
Finally, Connor came out and he stood there for a minute until he saw Kelly and the crew. He walked over to them and when Kelly heard footsteps he looked up and quickly stood up. “Connor?” Kelly asked Connor, looked at him and smiled.
“They’re both going to be just fine.” He said and Kelly looked at him shocked.
“Both?” Kelly questioned
“Yes, Y/N is 9 weeks pregnant. I take it neither of you knew.” He said, reading the expression on Kelly’s face.
“No. We’ve been trying but not really trying.” He said and Connor smiled. “How is Y/N?” He asked
“We lost her once but got her back quickly. The knife got her kidney so we had to remove that and we fixed her lung. I’m suggesting a few weeks to a month off from work but she can do very light duty.” Connor said and everyone nodded, mostly Boden. “I can take you to her now.” He said.
“Please.” Kelly said and Connor smiled and nodded. He led Kelly the way and while he was walking past his crew, they gave him a chorus of ‘Congratulations’. They weren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Kelly and Connor arrived at your room and he walked in and sat down on the chair. “If something happens, please grab one of the nurses and they’ll either page me or Natalie or both of us will be here.” He said and Kelly nodded “Oh and Kelly?” He added and Kelly looked up at him. “Congratulations.” He said and Kelly smiled and Connor was off. He was left there sitting with you and letting tears fall.
“You scared me, Angel. When I saw you lying there with Jay putting pressure on your wounds, my world stopped. Then when you stopped breathing and your heart stopped twice on the way here, it scared the shit out of me. We’re going to be parents, Angel. I don’t know if you can hear me but you, I’m so glad you chose to stay with me. I would be so lost without you. I love you so much.” He said and kissed your forehead.
Nurses were in and out checking on you and the baby and the crew came and saw you but couldn’t stay long and Kelly understood and he knew you would understand too. Kelly wasn’t going to leave your side for nothing and nobody was going to make him and Boden understood. He wanted to put your ring back on but refrained against it because he didn’t want them taking it off again.
2 days had passed and you still hadn’t woken up but that was to be understood it helped your body heal. They kept IVs running to keep you and the baby hydrated and it had some nutrients in it to keep you both nourished from the lack of food being eaten. It was during the night when you woke up and you looked around the room taking in the noise and where you were at. Then you looked over to your right and saw Kelly sleeping. You reached a hand over and stroked his cheek which woke him up and then when he saw you were awake, he was up with a start. About that time Connor and Natalie had come and smiled. “Nice to see you awake.” Connor said and you smiled and then grimaced in pain when you tried to move.
“Take it easy. You just had some major surgery. We also don’t want to stress the baby out.” Natalie said and you pulled a confused face.
“Baby?” You asked voice scratchy and Kelly was quick to grab the cup of water and bring the straw to your lips and you drank some and pushed it away.
“Yes, we did an x-ray to see where the knife had hit and when the baby popped up, I was called in and I did an ultrasound to confirm that you are 9 weeks pregnant. I take it you didn’t know.” Natalie said and you shook your head but smiled “Congratulations.” She said with a small smile and you smiled back.
“Thank you. We were trying for a kid but haven’t been trying very hard.” You said and she smiled.
“The knife punctured your kidney and your lung. We removed your kidney and repaired your lung. I want you to take it very easy for a few weeks and if you go back to work then it’s going to have to be very light duty.” Connor said and you nodded. He and Natalie went over a few things with you and then left. They wanted you to stay in the hospital for at least a week to make sure everything was ok and no complications and you agreed along with Kelly.
“We’re going to be parents.” You said and he smiled and nodded then you looked down at your bare hand “Where is my ring?” You asked almost panicked and he smiled and pulled it out on his chain.
“Right here baby.” He said and pulled it off and took it off and put it back on your hand where it belonged. You let out a yawn and he chuckled. “Go back to sleep baby. I’ll be here when you wake up.” He said and leaned up and kissed your forehead again.
As you fell back asleep you smiled and thought about your baby. The two of you were going to be parents and you couldn’t wait. All you could think about is how good of a father Kelly was going to make and you couldn’t wait. You couldn’t wait to marry him and raise his kid with him. The three of you were going to be one happy family and that was something worth staying for.

Moving into the blue office was an easy decision to make for Matt, not only because it gave him some peace and quiet from the rowdiness of the others, but because it made it that much easier for you and him to continue sneaking around behind everyone’s back. And it didn’t take you long into today's shift to start playing the dangerous game you two had been playing for God knows how long.
“You look so hot in your Captain's shirt…” You murmured, trailing your arms down the front of his chest and running your fingertips over the leather of his belt before you placed your hand firmly on the hardening bulge beneath his pants. The one you could always make spring up with a simple look. “Would you look at that… Getting so hard for me already, guess I better do something about that.”
You dropped swiftly to your knees, undoing his belt and pants with such speed that Matt didn’t get a second to say anything in return before a low groan left his lips as you wrapped your hand firmly around his cock, the tip already swelling and dripping with pre-cum. He glanced down at you, just in time to see you lick the salty drop from his end, the mere hotness of your tongue almost flooring him as he fell backwards into his chair, which rolled briefly across the room.
“You’re playing a dangerous game.” He whispered, eyelids fluttering when you crawled towards him and ran your tongue painfully slow down the underside of his shaft. “Anyone could walk in here and see you.”
“I guess I better hide then.” You breathed out, placing a sloppy kiss on the tip of his cock before you shuffled backwards, fitting nicely in the space beneath his desk before you rolled him closer to you, the chair barely coming to a stop before you had your mouth around him, taking his full length and gagging when he hit the back of your throat.
Matt’s fist clenched tightly atop the desk, his other hand making its way under it to thread his fingers through your hair, his hips gently bucking as he fucked his throbbing cock into your mouth. You always took him so well, so perfectly that he couldn’t help but think you were made just for him.
“God, you feel so fucking good.” He moaned, your lips tightening around his length as you continued to work your magic against him. He was already about to burst, to drip down your throat as you sucked every last drop out of him, that was, until his office door opened and someone who made this moment all the more arousing for you walked in. Gabby. His fiancée.
“Hey, Matt…” Gabby said with a smile, not noticing the way Matt tensed as he brought his hand out from under the table, straining against the urge to moan your name as you continued to suck his cock, even more now that the woman he was engaged to had just walked in. Talk about risky. And an aphrodisiac.
“Gabby…” Matt exhaled, clenching his fist tighter when you slowly grazed your teeth along his length, pulling back until only the tip remained in your mouth. You always did make a hell of a noise when you sucked him off which is why he wasn’t surprised to soon feel your hand wrap around him, nowhere near gentle as you began to pump him. “You need something?”
“Yeah… But are you… okay? You look like you’re in pain.” Gabby asked with a brief chuckle, Matt’s tense posture unlike anything she’d seen before.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Matt replied, forcing a smile as he swallowed back a groan that had rattled up his chest and almost escaped. There'd be no explaining that, that’s for sure, especially when said groan tasted like your name. “Just a little stomach pain… Must have been those tacos Cruz made for lunch.” He added humorously, almost letting a high pitched whine escape his lips when he felt yours wrap around his tip again, silently telling him to hurry the conversation along as you wanted to absolutely devour him.
And as hot as it would be to have him come in your mouth when the woman he was supposed to marry was in the room, you knew it wasn’t right, but that didn’t mean you weren’t holding back on giving him exactly what he wanted.
Thankfully, Gabby left soon, having interrupted to ask stupid questions that you weren’t paying attention to as you were more focused on Matt’s hardened cock that was between your lips, and the second the door closed, he wheeled himself back a little and allowed you to give it your all.
“Did that turn you on?” He breathed out, both his hands making their way to your hair which he gripped tightly, bucking his hips hard as he throat fucked you, your eyes watering as you held back your gags. “Sucking my dick with my fiancée in the room?”
“So fucking much.” You moaned, your tongue flattening against the very tip of his cock before you wrapped your lips back around it again.
“Then stand up… Lock the door… And let me finish in that tight, little pussy of yours instead.” Matt practically demanded, making you clench your legs as he turned on a tap between them, the wetness gushing out of you as you did what you were told.
The second you were close enough to him, he pulled you forward, kissing you hard enough that you felt your teeth knock against his. The two of you weren’t in love, not by a long shot, but you’d been sleeping together long before he got together with Gabby, and with the way things were going, you’d be continuing to do so long after he married her too. And honestly, the idea of getting caught, only turned you on that much more. And Matt knew that.
“Fuck me, Matt.” You whimpered, his fingers tracing over your slick slit after he’d eagerly undressed your lower half.
“You want me to fuck you?” He teased, pushing one digit briefly into your soaking pussy before pulling back out, using his foot to spread your legs and stop you from clenching them around him.
“I want you to fuck me… Want you to fuck me real good.” You panted, grinding yourself down against the palm of his hand, making him chuckle deeply before he pulled away, turning you round and forcing your chest down onto his now messy desk.
“Oh, I’m gonna fuck you real good.” He whispered into your ear, watching as you bit down hard on your lip when he bottomed out in one quick motion, filling you up completely yet remaining still. “And you better pray that Gabby doesn’t come knocking again cause I don’t think I’d be able to stop if she did.”

When we fall | Part 1
Warnings (for all parts): Fluff, angst!!, description of injuries, blood, violence, use of guns, mentions of death, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary: You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words: 6k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N: I just started watching Chicago PD (I'm on season 3 now) after I've been watching Fire and Med for years now. I just can't stand Voight so I only began watching for Jay and Burzek! And I am so in love with Jay. Please, this man is perfect. Just look at that handsome face!!
This is going to be a 3 part series I wrote on a whim. Originally I only planned on writing one scene, but then I figured it needed a backstory so this happened...
I have to say I am really proud how it turned out. I was just in such a flow when I wrote it that the story basically wrote itsself. I hope you enjoy and that the characters feel true to themselves :)
Tumblr media
You had only began working at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center a few months ago, hesitant to work alongside your brother but knowing it was an opportunity, which would be stupid not to take.
Having moved to Chicago recently to be close with your brother after a messy break-up, you were still adjusting to your new life.
It was why you were more than relieved when you got along well with your co-workers, especially Natalie and her boyfriend Will.
They were understanding of your situation, were never bothered to show you where to find something at the hospital and made you feel welcome from the beginning as they invited you in on their group plans and joked like you were old friends.
Although you still felt a little uncertain at times to work with your brother, who had made himself a name as a brilliant trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon, he had been supportive since your decision to leave your old town behind and start a new life in Chicago.
Maybe, you thought, coming here had been exactly what you needed. A fresh start, a new beginning with new friends and no men to mess with your heart. At least for now.
“I told you I have sworn off men”, you sighed, shaking your head in amusement at Natalie’s try to play matchmaker. “They’re trouble. I don’t need that in my life right now.”
“Hey!” Will send you a look, though you knew he wasn’t mad. “She’s not wrong though”, April stated and Ethan next to her grinned. “I mean it though”, you said directed at Natalie. “I just want to focus on myself right now. My job. No dating for now.”
Everyone at the table nodded and you relaxed, glad you had found these people, who respected and supported you. “Cheers to that!” April raised her glass and you did the same when you noticed yours was empty.
With a groan you pushed yourself out of your seat and up, gesturing towards the bar. “I’m going to get another drink. Anyone want something?” They all shook their heads, already moving onto another topic.
As you made your way over to the counter you studied the people around you, trying to determine who was a cop, a firefighter and who a regular. Right in the beginning the others had introduced you to Mollys, claiming it was Chicago’s bar where first responders spend their time after shift.
Figuring it might come in handy to memorize some faces you let your gaze drift over the sea of people, recognizing a few men that Connor had once told you worked at the CFD. They were laughing loudly, beers in hand as they seemed to be talking enthusiastically about something.
At the table next to theirs your gaze came to a hold, your eyes caught by a man you had never seen before but looked slightly familiar. Your brows furrowed as you rummaged in your head for something that connected you to him, but you couldn’t find anything.
The people who sat with him didn’t look familiar either, consisting of men and one woman with chestnut hair. Your eyes drifted back to the man, who had caught your attention, his brown hair styled neatly and his hands wrapped around a bottle of beer that he just raised to his lips.
You didn’t meant to stare, but you were mesmerized, torn between trying to determine why he looked so familiar and captured by his effortless handsomeness.
He wore a green shirt, making you think his eyes were the same shade, although it was hard to know with the distance between you.
He seemed relaxed, leant back in his seat but listening to the others conversation attentively. Having sensed someone’s eyes on him he suddenly looked up, his eyes searching the room for a split second before they fell onto you.
Your face heat up as a blush crept up your cheeks, knowing you had missed your chance to turn away. The man raised his brows slightly, in confusion just as much as amusement it seemed, before he lightly lifted his bottle, as if he was saying cheers.
You clutched your glass a little tighter, glad that it had been refilled in the time you had spent gawking at him, and copied the movement, an unstable smile on your lips. Then you turned away, meeting Stella’s gaze from the other side of the bar.
The two of you had met when she had been at the hospital for smoke inhaling a while ago and you had clicked almost instantly, connected by your determination to hold your own in a field still dominated by men. And by your past with toxic relationships as you found out later.
“What was that?”, she asked, a teasing grin tugging at the corner of her lips as her eyes flickered between you and the man behind you. A part of you wanted to ask if he was still watching you, the other longed to forget it had ever happened.
“I don’t know.” You let out a dramatic sigh. “Can we just forget it ever happened?”
Stella’s face lit up, her curls dancing around her face as she shook her head. “Yeah, you wish. But that was definitely something.”
You exhaled, pinching your nose. “Thank you for the drink.” You saw Stella open her mouth in protest at your ignoration of her words, but before she could say anything else you send her an apologetical smile and hurried off.
No one seemed to have noticed your encounter and you slipped into the booth with ease, trying hard not to steal another glance at the unknown man a few tables away.
No men, you reminded yourself. Right now you needed to focus on getting your life together, not getting your heart broken by a handsome stranger.
-
“Dr. (Y/l/n)?” “Yeah?”, your head shot up from where you had filled out paper work. Because Connor and you were only half-sibling, you didn’t share the same last name, something you had been more than glad over when stepping foot in this hospital for the first time.
No one knew where you came from and that you shared genes with the successful Dr. Rhodes and you had left it at that at first, wanting to make your own impression first before dropping the information.
You could still remember their shocked faces, the questions, but most of all the excitement as they asked what Connor had been like growing up. If you had any embarrassing stories to tell or photos to show.
You didn’t, keeping them to yourself for now, because you hadn’t come here to make fun of your brother. He had been your rock through your breakup and your move here, something you were so grateful for you feared you would never be able to show him just how much.
“We have someone hit bit a bullet waiting in the three.” Your eyes widened. “Why didn’t they come with an ambulance?”, you asked, grabbing your iPad along the way.
Maggie waved off your comment, chuckling. “Cops. You know how they are.”
Actually, you didn’t. Coming from a small town you had no experience with shootings and gangs and many of the other trauma causes that were common here in Chicago. It was why you had been so excited about your job offer at the hospital.
Although you were still adjusting to the changes of living in a city and there were downsides you hadn’t considered before, you liked it. It felt so different, giving you the sense that in this city everything could be possible.
So many options and so many possibilities, as if you could completely reinvent yourself. It was thrilling, making you wonder how you had ever lived without the adrenaline rush of stepping into a busy ER.
Quickly scanning the information on your tablet you pulled open the curtain, clamping the iPad under your arm as you disinfected your hands.
“Hi, I’m doctor (y/l/n) and you are?” You glanced up, startled as you met the eyes of a familiar stranger. The man in front of you grinned, seemingly better at covering up his surprise. “Shouldn’t it say my name on your tablet?”
He didn’t sound rude, only a little sarcastic and perhaps even teasing. You gulped, trying to recompose yourself. “Right. I just prefer getting to know my patients myself than just relying on numbers and letters.”
You didn’t see his reaction when you grabbed your iPad again, glancing down at it. “So your name is Jay Hal-” “Halstead”, he finished for you and you looked up at him again.
It made sense now, why he had seemed so familiar to you nights ago at Mollys. “You’re Will’s brother.” The man in front of you, Jay, as you knew now, raised a brow. “Have you considered becoming a detective?”
He was mocking you, again, and you were tempted to smack him with your iPad. “So-”, he paused, letting his eyes drift over you. You felt your body tense under his gaze, cop’s eyes, and stood a little straighter.
“You were watching me at Mollys.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line, biting your tongue. You could only hope the embarrassment that began to sink in didn’t show.
“I was not watching you”, you stated and he raised a brow, daring you to explain yourself. “I just thought you looked familiar, but I couldn’t figure out why. Now it makes sense.”
You turned halfway towards the door, gesturing to the halls where somewhere his brother was treating another patient.
“I don’t think that’s the whole truth.”
You almost gasped at the confidence in his voice, instead blowing out a breath. “It definitely was.”
He shook his head, smiling. “I don’t buy it.”
There were many things you wanted to say to him, but you swallowed them, knowing it was no use. He clearly enjoyed teasing you, so you wouldn’t give him more fuel.
Instead you let out a sigh, shifting into professionality. “So, Mr. Halstead”, you began. “Jay is fine.” You tried not to let his interruption let you lose your string again and nodded. “Jay, you’re here for a bullet wound on your left upper arm?”
Jay nodded, his eyes- they really were green- bright. Pulling on your gloves you decided it was time to reclaim your own position a little. “And you decided to just walk in here instead of coming with an ambulance? Seems a little reckless, don’t you think?”
He raised one brow at your question. “It’s just a graze. I wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for my boss.” He rolled his eyes, making you wonder what his boss was like.
“Seems like your boss is a lot smarter than you”, you muttered, but to your surprise Jay grinned. “You’re new here, right? At least I’ve never seen you here before. Do you always talk to patients like that?”
You shrugged, unbothered by his words as you stepped close to him to take a look at his arm. You didn’t know what had gotten into you to talk to him like that, but you had the feeling with him it was fine. That he could take it, perhaps even enjoyed it over your dry professionalism.
“Only to the ones I like best”, you said with sarcasm in your voice, too focused on inspecting his wound to check his expression.
Jay didn’t move under your touch, allowing you to move his arm before you let it go again. He had done this before, probably multiple times. It was why he was so unbothered, perhaps even annoyed to waste his time here on something that seemed unsignificant to him.
For a moment you were tempted to ask him how he could choose a job that demanded such sacrifice, but you didn’t know him and you doubted he would give you an honest answer. Not that you could blame him. You were practically strangers.
And was your job much different? Although you had never been hurt and doubted it would ever happen, you were still making countless of sacrifices for it. Taking on extra shifts, working through the nights, staying longer to take more time for your patients and putting their health over your own sometimes.
“It’s just a graze shot”, you said when you were done inspecting the wound, ignoring his look that seemed to say “told you”.
“But you still need to be careful with it. Give it rest, avoid any rapid movements, don’t lift too heavy with it…I think you know.”
Jay nodded, watching you remove your gloves. “Does that happen often?” He tilted his head in question and you bit your lip. “I mean, you- getting shot on the job.”
“Are you asking if I come here often?” His lips were curled into a lopsided grin, looking way too handsome on his features. You rolled your eyes at his teasing, ignoring the way your heart beat a little faster in your chest. “Forget it”, you stated, throwing your gloves into the bin.
“I am going to tell one of the residents to come and bandage the wound. Then you’re free to go.”
But before you could move the curtain again and leave the room you heard Jay’s voice behind you. “Wait.”
You paused, turning back to him slowly. For the first time he wore a serious expression, his jaw twitching.
“I’m with the Intelligence”, he stated, in a way that told you the name should ring a bell. It didn’t. You were too new to know much about it.
Jay seemed to sense it by your lack of a reaction to his words. “We’re…very involved in the City.”
Whatever that meant. You tilted your head in question. “You mean with the gangs?”
Jay shifted. “Voight, my boss, he can be very- intense.”
You nodded slowly, taking in his guarded expression. It was a topic you wouldn’t pry at. “And you’re okay with it? I mean- you’re just so…casual about this.”
You bit your lip, hesitant to ask him but curious as well. The cops in your home town had barely ever used their weapon to the point you sometimes even doubted they were able to.
Jay shrugged nonchalantly. “Before I worked for the CPD I was in the army. I’ve been through a lot worse than a graze. Getting shot at is just another part of my job.”
A veteran.
In such a short amount of time Jay had revealed so much to you. Suddenly you had a lot more respect for the man in front of you and you wondered if that was his way of coping, covering up his battle wounds and scars with sarcasm and wit.
You swallowed, trying to find words. But none seemed fitting. “Sounds like I will be seeing you here often then.” You kept your voice emotionless, although the thought of seeing Jay regularly made your heart speed up a little. Of course you would prefer different circumstances.
Damn his handsome face and wit.
He grinned slightly, shifting the atmosphere back to something lighter. “Don’t get too excited. I prefer staying bullet free.” “As you should.”
Typing something into your iPad you gave Jay a final nod. “Stay safe out there.” Then you turned to the door, already halfway out when you heard his voice again.
“I don’t even know your name.”
You froze, smiling to yourself when you tried not to put too much weight into the fact that he had called you back a second time. It seemed almost as if he didn’t want you to leave just yet.
But you pushed the thought aside, knowing it was pointless. You couldn’t let yourself get distracted so easily.
Turning back to him you put on a polite smile.
“You’re a detective, figure it out.”
You were surprised by your own confidence, but with Jay you didn’t feel shy or insecure. He made you feel like you could say anything and he wouldn’t mind. The type of man that didn’t get upset easily, so comfortable with who he was that it took a lot to get him to lose his temper.
“I could just ask my brother, you know.”
You shrugged, unimpressed. “If that lets you sleep at night, sure.”
You left the room smiling to yourself and it took you another few minutes to calm your rapid heart and collect yourself.
-
“You didn’t tell me you have a brother!” “What?” Will looked up from the computer, startled by the way you had barged into the break room.
Your shift was over and you couldn’t wait to get home and relax on the couch, but before that you needed to talk to Will. Because after encountering the other Halstead your mind hadn’t been able to let go of what had happened between the two of you. The way he had looked at you, teased you. How he had made you feel nervous and confident in just a matter of moments.
“Why didn’t you tell me you have a brother?” You leaned on the desk, sure that you had Will’s full attention now. “You didn’t tell us you had a brother the first few weeks either.”
“That’s different.” You shook your head. “And I did tell you. So…?”
Will leaned back in his chair, stretching his back. “I didn’t think it mattered. I would have introduced you eventually but- wait, is Jay here?”
You bit your tongue, feeling a little caught. You hadn’t thought that maybe Jay didn’t want his brother to know what had happened. But it was too late now, and anyway, how should you have known?“
"He was. He is fine though.” You kept your words vague, aware that you weren’t allowed to share personal information with Will. Even if they were brothers.
Will let out a sigh. “That idiot. Probably got himself in trouble again.” He reached for his phone across the desk and you quickly got up, straightening.
“You didn’t get it from me”, you threw in before Will could drag you into it and he looked up at you with curiosity in his eyes. “I wasn’t going to mention you.”
“Oh.” You nodded, feeling relieved yet a little flustered. Will studied you with attentive eyes, reminding you of his brother for a second before his expression shifted into suspicion.
“So you met Jay.” He said it in a way that proposed something meaningful behind his words, but you couldn’t figure out why. “I did.” You shifted your weight to the balls of your feet before swaying forward again. A nervous habit. “I bet he’s the younger one.”
“He is, yeah.”
You suppressed a grin. It made so much sense. “So I should probably head home now. I got the early shift tomorrow.”
“Right.” Will nodded, the phone in his hands seemingly forgotten as his eyes were still fixed on you. “Did something happen between you and my brother?”
Your heart sank a little. Were you really so obvious? “I told you I’ve sworn off men. And your brother is- annoying.”
You wished the last part didn’t sound like it came straight from a five year old’s mouth, but it was too late to take back.
“Trust me, I know that.” Will let out a sigh, but you could see the fondness in his eyes. The gesture alone told you they had a close relationship.
A cop and a doctor. What a pair.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
-
Weeks had passed since you had last seen Jay. He hadn’t shown up in the hospital again, which you were both glad for and disappointed at, and since you had been taking on extra shifts for a sick co-worker, you had spent almost all your time at the hospital or passed out in your bed.
“You haven’t gone out with us in weeks!” Sylvie was currently trying to convince you to come to Mollys. You had gotten to know her through Stella and the two of you had gotten along well, her sweet and kind nature something that made you feel comfortable around her instantly.
Although you had quickly learned not to underestimate the girl. She was working with a bunch of guys after all and had learned to stand her ground with them.
Sylvie could be very persistent, you realized again when she had called you to invite you to a girl’s night out. “Stella won’t be working today, so it’s our chance to spend the night as just us girls.”
You gnawed your lip, thinking. You were tired, craving your couch and tv more than going out again, but Sylvie wasn’t wrong, you had been mostly on your own the past days. Being a little social and getting out of your own apartment would probably be good.
“Urgh, fine”, you groaned. “But you’re paying my first drink.” You knew Sylvie was smiling triumphantly on the other end of the line. “Deal.” “Now get your ass over here!” It was Stella’s voice in the background and you chuckled. “You are the worst!”
“And you love us anyway”, she chirped and you hung up, shaking your head with a smile on your face.
You hadn’t thought about impressing anyone when getting ready, but you were more than glad you had put a little effort into your outfit and make-up when you stepped into Molly’s that night, your getup like a wall build around you.
“You came!” Stella crossed the room, her voice loud enough for a couple of heads to turn towards you. You could kill her for drawing attention to you, but you forced a smile onto your lips instead, trying not to look at anyone except her.
“Hey”, you muttered, shrugging out of your coat and hugging her. “Wow, girl you look stunning!” Stella’s eyes flashed up and down your body as she let go, a smirk on her face.
“A little quieter, please?”, you almost whispered, aware that you still had the attention of the people around you. Stella seemed either completely oblivious to it all or unbothered, because she grinned at you. “Looking like that you will draw attention to you whether you like it or not!”
You felt your cheeks heat up a little, glad when you spied Sylvie making her way over. “I told her not to make a scene, but she wouldn’t listen. You know how she is!”
You hugged her too, smiling as Stella let out a breath. “I did not make a scene. And I’m standing right here, you know?”
Laughing, the three of you made your way to the back, where you slipped into a booth, your drink already waiting for you. “You know me so well”, you told Stella as you took your first sip, relaxing a little now that the attention had mostly vanished.
“I got you, girl!” Stella winked at you, before launching into a story about their newest rescue. Soon you were enveloped in laughter and smiles, the stress of the last days forgotten for the night.
Only when Stella declared it was time for another round of drinks you felt the exhaustion return to your body. “I think I’m going to head home”, you told them, stretching a little in your seat. “Early shift tomorrow?”, Sylvie asked and you nodded.
“You’re way too selfless, taking on all these extra shifts”, Stella pointed out, but you waved her off. “I’m the new one, so it’s fine. Helps me get to know everyone and everything better and it’s not like I have much to do in this city yet. I only got my gym membership, but I didn’t really have time to look for anything else.”
“See? That’s exactly why you need time off! You should be out exploring the city!” You smiled at Stella’s enthusiasm. “It’s not like it won’t be here tomorrow. I’m planning on staying here, so there’s plenty of time to get to know it all.”
Sylvie offered you a smile. “I’m glad you do. I know it can be quite an adjustment to move to a big city like Chicago, but it will feel like your home in no time.”
You felt your heart squeeze painfully in your chest as you thought back to the past months, which had been filled with nothing but heartbreak, loss and a turmoil of emotions. Even as you had decided to start a new life in Chicago, you had been filled with fear and uncertainty, scared to make the wrong call yet again.
Never could you have imagined to find a job, that was so challenging, but gave you a sense of purpose and a group of friends, that felt like you had met them long ago.
“It already kind of does”, you admitted, your eyes fixed on the empty glass in front of you before you looked up at them again. They both looked at you with big smiles on their faces and you almost felt tears fill your eyes. It had been a long day.
“We should do this more often”, you told them as you got up and grabbed your coat. “That’s what I said!” Stella nodded.
“And I still need to show you that spinning class. You would love it!” Sylvie sounded so excited that you couldn’t help but chuckle. “I am sure. Just text me and we’ll find something.”
“And you’re sure you can’t stay longer?”
Your eyes drifted to the counter as you considered staying for another drink, but your body felt heavy and almost sore from the day’s work. “Next time. But you two have fun and don’t drink too much”, you winked at them.
As you excited the bar you waved towards a few familiar faces before pulling your coat closer around your body to prepare yourself for Chicago’s cold.
Still you shivered as you stepped outside, pulling out your phone to order an Uber. Something you had only done once before, on your way here, but was an easy and quick way of getting around the city.
It would take a few minutes for your driver to arrive and you realized it would have been a lot smarter to wait inside, but you hadn’t thought of it then and you felt too proud to step inside again.
Pressing your hands together you rubbed them against each other a few times to create heat, before slinging your arms around your torso. Chicago’s harsh winters wasn’t something you hadn’t gotten used to yet, but the promise of snow lingering in the air made it almost worth it.
You heard the faint sound of the door opening and closing behind you so you took a step to the side of the building, not wanting to stand in the way of whoever had just left the bar.
To your surprise the person came to stand beside you, his presence alarming you until you glanced up to find none other than Jay Halstead standing next to you.
Immediately your body relaxed again, as if it knew by instinct his presence meant safety. “That was quite an entrance”, he greeted you, referring to the moment you had stepped into Molly’s.
You felt your cheeks flush at the memory, hoping he couldn’t see it in the dim light of the streetlamp. “I didn’t know you were here.” You kept your eyes trained at the empty street in front of you, willing and dreading the moment your driver came to pick you up.
“I was with the unit”, he said and you turned your head towards him. “Are you here often?” He shrugged, his eyes darting to the building. “I guess so, yeah. It’s the place where everyone comes.”
You nodded silently, contemplating his words. “But if I want to be alone, I go to the bar at the corner North Milwaukee Avenue.” You met his eyes curiously. Was he making recommendations, because you were new in the city or did he have another intention?
“So bars and hospitals. Everywhere else I can expect to run into Jay Halstead?” You didn’t know why you asked, but a part of you wanted to know. Wanted to know more about him, what his life was like, what made him who he was.
Jay grinned faintly. “You make it sound like I’ve got issues.” “Do you? Have issues?” You were teasing and he smirked. “Doesn’t everyone?”
“I don’t think I have.” Even as you said it you knew your words couldn’t be farer from the truth. Hadn’t your issues been what had led you here?
Jay watched you for a moment, seemingly picking up on your change of mood, but sensing you weren’t ready to talk about it. You appreciated it, welcoming the silence to sort your thoughts again.
“So what led you here to Chicago?” His question was innocent and something you had been asked countless of times since your move here, but for some reason you felt the urge to be open with him. No lies or excuses.
And even if Jay barely knew you, you thought he would be able to pick up on it. He must be an excellent detective.
“There were some…things I needed to leave behind.” It was vague, but more than you had told most who had asked. Only the girls knew about your breakup, but even with them you hadn’t shared many details.
Jay didn’t ask further, his grave expression suggesting he understood you better than you might have thought. “Why Chicago?” You glanced away from him, taking in the empty road, the skyline with its lights in the background. “I needed a fresh start, somewhere where no one knew who I am. And I got family here, so it made sense.”
You could feel his eyes on you and you swallowed before facing him again. For a moment your eyes locked, none of you saying anything as you started at each other. Jay was the first one to break the heavy atmosphere, a smile dancing at his lips.
“But you’re not a criminal on the run, are you? Because I would have to arrest you, if you were.” The tension that had risen in your body at the mention of your past vanished and you grinned, relieved about his ability to lighten the atmosphere. “What gave it away?”
Jay leaned a little closer, his eyes glistening. “Maybe the way you always look over your shoulder-” You inhaled. Was that really something you did? “-or that you’re nervous around me, a cop.”
The air you had held escaped you in a surprised sound and you hugged your torso a little tighter. “I’m not nervous around you”, you huffed, shaking your head. Jay grinned.
“How is your arm by the way?” You weren’t interested in talking about yourself any longer, shifting the topic onto him. Your gazes travelled down his arm where his jacket was covering the wound you had inspected. It seemed like forever ago and like yesterday at once.
“It’s good. Voight’s keeping me at a leash, make sure I’m 100% before I get into the field again.” He said it like it wasn’t a big deal, but you could hear the strain in his voice. He missed it, being out there on the streets.
“Sounds reasonable to me.” “Yeah.” Jay nodded, a faraway look in his eyes. It seemed like you weren’t the only one with secrets.
You looked up at the sound of a car nearing, a black car approaching the two of you. Checking your phone you held it up. “That’s my ride.”
But you only managed one step towards it before Jay pulled you back, his hand wrapped around your lower arm. You gazed at it, confused and startled by his reaction and he loosened his grip, his hand falling to his side after a moment.
“You know the guy?”, he asked, pointing to the man that was sitting behind the wheel, an impatient expression on his face.
Slowly you shook your head, your eyes flickering between the car and Jay. “But he’s my ride. See-” you held up your phone to him, but Jay paid it little attention.
“Yeah, no, you’re not climbing into that car”, he stated, his voice firm but not unfriendly. “Wait, what?”
Surprised you watched Jay walk towards the car, waiting for the driver to pull down the window before leaning in. You couldn’t hear what was said, only watched the two speak for a minute.
Their conversation ended with Jay handing the man money, before walking back towards you as the car sped away in the darkness.
“What the hell was that?”, you asked as Jay came to stand beside you again, his body just as relaxed as before. “You’re new in Chicago, right?” You didn’t say anything, knowing it was a question he didn’t expect an answer to.
“You should not be climbing into a car with a stranger. And not in the dark.”
Your head spun as you tried to process what he was implying. “It was just an uber! Everyone does that around here.”
You sounded clueless and defensive, shocked about the sudden change of events. Jay eyed you. “Well, then take it from me to never do that again. At least not alone. Chicago’s not a good place, especially for women, trust me on that one.”
You didn’t know what to say, blinking at him as the impact of it sank in. What if Jay hadn’t stepped outside? You doubted anything would have happened, but what if he was right and you had been reckless? Naive?
“So how am I supposed to get around the city then? Because driving in this traffic is madness.”
For the first time since your interruption Jay smiled again. “You can just ask me. I am much cheaper anyway. And on top you will get to see my face.”
You rolled your eyes over his confidence. “Now that’s a deal I can’t decline”, you muttered, fighting the grin that threatened to spread over your face and failing. Damn it.
“But for real, what am I supposed to do? I can’t just call you all the time I want to go somewhere.”
“It wouldn’t be a problem if we went together.”
Your eyes widened as you almost choked on the air. “You mean a date?”
Jay shrugged, his eyes not meeting yours for only a second. “You can pay me back for saving your ass twice.”
“Twice?”
“Getting into that car for one and saving you from freezing here on the street by driving you home.”
Smooth. You couldn’t help the laugh that escaped you. “Does that work with every woman you’re trying to impress?”
Jay shrugged, fiddling for something in his pocket before pulling out his car keys. You watched a car light up at the other side of the street, following Jay towards it.
“I wouldn’t know. And who says I’m trying to impress you?”
“Maybe because of this whole I’m-a-cop-and-I’m-so-tough-thing.”
Now it was Jay’s turn to chuckle. “That’s not just a thing. So, what are you saying?”
Oh. You bit your lip, considering the thought of going on a date with Jay. Hadn’t you just recently decided not to date and focus on yourself for a while?
But you couldn’t deny you wanted to say yes. To spend more time around him and enjoy the feeling of ease he gave you.
“Maybe.”
You said it with a teasing smile, scared Jay might take your answer in a bad way, but he sent you a confident grin. “I can work with that.”

Summary: You and Hank have been dating for over a year without anyone finding out. Today, that all changes when Hank becomes a little jealous of Ruzeks advances... and needs to let everyone know who you belong to.
Trigger Warnings: None (if you feel there should be a warning, please do let me know.)

---------------------------------------------------
Pouring yourself another coffee, you took a sip smiling to yourself as it warmed you up. The Chicago winter had hit hard this year, and the three shirts you had on certainly weren't enough to keep you warm. Sitting at one of the tables, you hugged the mug close to your body trying to savour the heat. Brett, Stella and Violet were sitting at your table chatting, whilst Mouch, Hermann and Cruize watched the TV. Hearing the doors swing open, you glanced up and found yourself watching Sergeant Voight talking with Chief Boden, Ruzek and Atwater standing close behind him. You watched for a moment longer, seeing the frown on your Chief's face, and the jaw clench from Voight. Before you could turn away however, Ruzek caught your eye and waved. Waving back you gave a small smile, then turned back to your coffee.
Next thing you knew, you had Ruzek standing beside you grinning down.
"Hey (Y/N), how you doin'?"
Nodding you smiled;
"Good thanks you?"
"Yeah... I'm good. So uh... when you gonna let me take you out for that drink hmm?" He leant in closer to you, smirk growing wide thinking he'd finally won you over. The girls all had their own grins of amusement on their faces, waiting to see how this would play out. Sighing, you looked down.
"Ruzek, I appreciate the offer but I um... I can't." Huffing out a breath he rolled his eyes,
"Come on... I've asked around, and no one knows of a guy or girl you're dating, so it can't be that." Raising an eyebrow at him, you leant back in your chair. Stella grimaced, knowing he had most likely signed his own death warrant.
"Ruzek, I've told you before I'm seeing someone... I just don't announce it to everyone around me is all." You heard Boden laugh, glancing round you saw him and Voight looking your way. Closing your eyes momentarily, you turned back to Ruzek.
"Okay alright... at least tell me who you're dating." Raising an eyebrow, he shrugged,
"What? I'm a detective... I'm curious by nature." Before you could even answer, you heard heavy footfalls sounding behind you.
"Ruzek... is there a reason you're bothering (Y/N), hmm?" Voights' rough voice sounded behind you. Glancing up, you could see the frustration on his face. Maybe a hint of... no, Hank couldn't be jealous, surely. Especially of Adam! Before Ruzek could even answer, Voight stopped at your side.
"Can't you see she isn't interested hmm?" Chuckling Ruzek stepped back hands raised,
"Okay, boss, I was just interested, is all." Nodding, Voight glanced at where you sat jaw clenching, then turned back to Ruzek.
"Well... maybe you can keep it in your pants from now on, hmm?" Ruzek flushed, Voight's tone was a bit harsh. Yep, definitely jealous. Averting his gaze to Atwater, Ruzek sneered at his partner, who had a smirk on his face.
"Sure thing, boss." He said in a sulky tone.
"Alright let's go then, we have a case to solve." Ruzek started to walk away, but not before noticing how Voight had turned to face you.
"He means well but... he can get ahead of himself sometimes." Chuckling, you shook your head.
"Don't worry about it, Hank. I can handle it." Before Adam could make a comment on you calling his Sergeant by his first name, Voight leant down and kissed you on the cheek. You saw Brett nearly fall out of her chair as Violet choked on her drink, and Stella just gawked at you both. You had a sneaking suspicion that the boys behind you had turned to look as well.
"I'll see you tonight, yeah? You still want to go to that Japanese place?" Feeling your face burn red, you nodded.
"Yeah I do, you enjoyed it last time right?" Hank smiled,
"I did. I'll pick you up at 8 okay?" Dropping your gaze to your coffee you smiled.
"Sure thing." Grinning Hank turned around, enjoying the shocked looks on everyone's face, giving Ruzek a smug look.
"Wear that green dress I got you last Summer. I like that on you." Looking up, you felt a thrill go through you. You and Hank had always said you'd want to stay private about your relationship, but he had clearly had enough of Ruzek not taking no for an answer. You decided to be a little more brave. You watched Hank slowly walking away, the eyes of everyone in the room either looking at him or you.
"I'll wear the dress if you wear that suit I like." Glancing behind him, he winked at you.
"Anything for you sweethear'." Feeling pleased with yourself, you sat back in your chair and sipped your coffee. Knowing full well, the rest of 51, was waiting until Voight and the guys were out of ear shot before grilling you.

Jealous - Brian 'Otis' Zvonecek
Request: I thought about Brian’s ex coming to town maybe Katie and reader gets jealous seeing how he reacted to her when she stopped by the firehouse. Fluffy ending of him putting her mind at ease that she’s his future and he loves her. Tysm for doing this❤️❤️
A/N: I found this in my drafts and realized I never finished it.
One Chicago Masterlist
✳︎ ✳︎ ✳︎ ✳︎
“Look, I get it,” you stressed, trying to make your voice sound a nonchalant as you weren’t feeling, “Kelly’s dad died and that’s awful and of course Katie is gonna come to the funeral...I just don’t know why she had to come here. To 51. To see Otis.”
From the look on Stella’s face you knew that your nonchalance wasn’t anywhere near believable. And how could it be? You remembered Katie from last time, something that you knew Sylvie knew just from the sympathetic look on her face when Katie came walking onto the app floor that morning. You and Otis were just friends back then but you’d had a crush on him, one that you were fairly certain he had picked up on until he’d announced to you and Cruz that he was dating Severide’s sister.
“She told him she’s got a boyfriend back in...wherever. I’m sure this is just a nostalgic trip down memory lane.” Stella tried, really she tried, but the words weren’t going through. Sylvie had tried this morning when ambo got called out on a run before you’d even sat down for briefing. And Cruz had tried when you came back and found Otis in the common room laughing at whatever hilarious thing you were sure that Katie had said to him.
Probably something along the lines of ‘breakup with your partner and date me instead. Remember how much fun we had together? And you didn’t have to explain the inner-workings of Catan to me.’
“It better be.” You grumbled, slamming your locker door a little louder than you meant to. There hadn’t been a call since the one that pulled you away from Otis and Katie’s initial reunion and in all honesty you were hoping there would be a call soon just to get you out of 51 and focused on work. Couldn’t some uncoordinated Chicagoan have a slip and fall or something? Anything to get you away from them and all the thoughts swirling in your head. You didn’t want to seem like you were lurking or eavesdropping on their conversation and you wanted to seem like the cool partner, the person who could let their boyfriend and his ex hang out without feeling any jealousy. But it was the exact opposite and if Stella knew, everyone else probably did too.
You left the locker room still somewhat aggravated, talking to Stella had helped you vent but it hadn’t given you any peace of mind. You still didn’t want Katie there and you were still annoyed that Otis had been so happy to see her. It wasn’t really his fault and you knew that. If there was anyone in the world that was guaranteed to have positive, healthy relationships with their exes, it was definitely Otis. What wasn’t to love about him? But knowing that just made the feeling in the pit of your stomach ten times worse. Why did he have to be so nice? Couldn’t he just be an asshole? Or maybe just an asshole to Katie? No...you didn’t want that either.
“Hey, there you are!” Otis’ voice startled you as you turned to see him standing there in the in the hallway outside of the lockeroom. No Katie in sight, thankfully. You’d heard him mention something about a tour of the firehouse (as if anything had changed since the last time she was here) before you’d snuck off to the lockers.
“Where’s Katie?” You asked, glancing over his shoulder as if she would materialize.
“Just in,” he pointed back to the common area, “wanted to make sure you were alright.”
“I’m fine.”
Otis looked immediately skeptical and you crossed your arms defensively, trying to play off you tension as calm, still hoping that the alarm would go off. Even if it was a fire, you’d rather everyone go than have to be stuck here one more moment with Katie and Otis. You definitely didn’t want to go back into the common room and have to sit there at the table and listen to the two of them share stories and reminise about the past.
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah,” you nodded. It wasn’t even like you were being rational in your annoyance. Otis had introduced you as his partner immediately. The practical second after he said hello to Katie he was dragging her over to you and introducing you as if you were the best piece of his life in Chicago that he could share with someone. But still, you hadn’t been able to quell the voice in your head. “Fine.”
Otis’ skeptical look turned contemplative, as if he was working something out. “Wait a minute...are you jealous?” He looked like he almost didn’t believe the words when he said them. As if it was such a crazy notion that saying it out loud made him feel like he was being ridiculous.
You huffed, shoulders slumping. Otis’ mustache twitched as he smiled, correct in his analysis. “I really like Katie,” you defended, lowering your voice so no one would overhear. “She seems super nice and I can totally get why you went out with her.”
“Can you totally get why I’m not interested in her now?” He asked, “Cause I love you and that’s not gonna change just cause my ex is in town?”
“Yeah, yeah...I know.” You replied, defeat evident in your voice. “I don’t know I just saw her and you were so excited to catch up. It’s totally irrational, I know that! I just...ugh god. I can’t explain it.” You huffed. “Stop smiling me like that.”
Otis’ smile didn’t diminish. He couldn’t deny that you getting jealous felt like a bit of an ego boost. That someone could love him so much that they were bothered by the idea of him hanging out with an ex. “Sorry, sorry, just kinda cute how annoyed you are.”
“Oh yeah, how cute would it be if I had an ex come to town and spent the whole afternoon with them?” You asked, hands on your hips.
Narrowed eyes, Otis’ smile turned to a slight grin. He knew what you were getting at and frankly, he knew you were right. Maybe it was silly that you were bothered by Katie but he knew if any ex of yours showed up at the firehouse he would be acting a lot worse. Less hiding in the locker room and more showboating. “Lets just not have exes, problem solved.”
“Well I doubt I’ll have any more.” You replied, the alarm finally blaring in the background.

MIDNIGHTS - TAYLOR SWIFT WRITING CHALLENGE MASTERLIST
-----------------------------
My first memory of that night was getting pulled into a hug as soon as I walked into the bar.
It was Sylvie, who had been texting me every time she went out to join them.
I hugged her back, chuckling a bit at her excitement.
I had been ignoring her.
I had been ignoring most people outside of work.
It was a natural part of the last few weeks I had gone through.
"I missed you," she mumbled into my ear before stepping back. "You look amazing."
"Thanks," I replied, looking down at myself for a moment.
It had been a while since I had worn the outfit that I wore that night. I liked it. It made me feel confident and happy. It was a feeling that I deserved... even though I had to actively work to convince myself of that fact.
"I'm sorry for not joining you sooner," I explained.
"No, no, it's fine," she promised. "I was just getting worried about you."
I hugged her again before letting her drag me to the bar.
I personally believe that we all deserve a Sylvie. The golden retriever that is incredibly protective and supportive. We all deserved that love and support from someone. It would suit us all well if we all took on that role for another person.
I hopped up on the bar stool.
It was a good night... for the most part.
I got to see plenty of people that I hadn't seen in a long time. It was nice to be back with them all. I had spent so much time running from work to home and then back to work that I had lost sight of the joy of being connected to my friends during times that weren't emergencies.
There was a lull in the conversation.
It was met with someone placing themself in the seat on the other side of me. Sylvie grinned at me before standing up and walking to one of the tables. I turned around and saw Jay Halstead sitting next to me.
I didn't know him super well. We had mostly seen each other in passing. He'd be at the E.D with a victim or suspect or just to talk to his brother while I was going about my work. The environment was usually too fast to give me time to stop and make small talk with him.
But now, I had the time and will to make that effort.
"Hey," I said. "Nice to see you, Jay."
"You too," he replied. "It's strange to not see you running around from room to room."
I chuckled. "Yeah... been a long time since I went out."
"I hope I don't make you regret the choice."
"I doubt it," I shrugged. "May make it worth the time."
He chuckled this time.
The conversation was nice. Natural. It had been a long time since I had so naturally fallen into a conversation with someone that I hadn't known for an extended period of time.
And then, I just felt uncomfortable.
Something washed over me like a wave.
There's this feeling when you're being stared at. It's almost like a tickle. Something just felt off, even if you couldn't see it.
I turned my head, pretending to scratch my eye as I looked over.
I managed to catch Kelly's eyes on me as I did so.
I almost groaned.
Kelly and I had a history.
He was the reason that I hadn't wanted to go out. I didn't want to see him again. I didn't want to deal with him.
Our relationship was messy. Messy and private.
I didn't mind a private relationship. I did mind Kelly's definition of a private relationship. When I pushed for more, he made me feel guilty for trying. It was all just... too much.
I felt like a secret.
He was free to talk to and flirt with whomever he wanted to. However, if he ever thought I did the same, he'd find some way to make me feel guilty.
I wanted to believe none of it was intentional. That he just didn't know better. But that doesn't make it better. That didn't mean I had to sit there in it.
So, I didn't.
I called the whole thing off.
Adjusting back to being myself was rough. I hadn't even realized how much I had changed. That's what I was trying to do by focusing on work and then going straight home. I was trying to go back to who I was before.
But here he was, already making me feel like my confidence for the night shouldn't be on display for everyone else. Just him.
I turned back to Jay a moment after I looked away.
I must've tensed a little too much. He noticed something.
"You okay," he asked. I furrowed my eyebrows, confused by the question. "You just seem uneasy."
"I'm fine," I waved it off. "Please, keep telling your story. Sorry."
"You sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure," I promised.
He grinned at me and nodded. He found his way back to the story had been telling me. Something about his brother. I made a note to make fun of Will at work later using the information I was being given.
We had been talking for another few minutes before I felt a hand on my upper arm.
I looked over to see Kelly right next to me.
"Can we talk," he asked like I wasn't in the middle of a conversation.
I looked over at Jay for a moment. "Just a minute. I'll be right back, I promise."
Jay nodded. "I'll be here."
I grinned at him.
I stood up and followed Kelly outside. I knew that I needed to handle this now. Firm line in the sand. I needed to put up a boundary... which was nerve-wracking but necessary.
"What do you want," I asked.
"What's going on there?" he replied.
"I'm having a conversation with a person at a bar," I shrugged. "Why do you care?"
"Because I care about you."
"I'm sure," I nodded. "But good news, you and I aren't a thing anymore, meaning that you don't have to supervise my conversations. I'm an adult, Kelly."
He sighed, looking down.
"I... I don't want you to be involved in my life, Kelly. I'm sorry but I don't. You may not realize it completely, but I... I wasn't happy with you. Not the way we were. So, we're done. I would appreciate it if you would try to maintain your distance outside of work-related circumstances."
"What are you talking about?"
There it was.
That fear that he truly was unaware of what he had been doing. I thought he would have had some kind of wake-up call. I was wrong.
"I tried everything just to get you to see me as more than... whatever you thought I was," I explained. "I... I wasted so much time giving all of myself just for you to dismiss me in the morning after you got your fix."
He rolled his eyes. "Come on, you're being a bit dramatic-"
"Gifts and date plans and birthdays and new clothes to impress and... let's face it, we had different intentions when it came to this relationship, Kelly," I shrugged at him. "I'm not gonna stay in a relationship where the effort I put in isn't appreciated or reciprocated."
"So, what?" he said. "You're just gonna go hook up with Jay? A couple of weeks is what it took for you to be ready to jump into bed with someone?"
"I was gonna be mature about this," I muttered. I took a deep breath and offered him a sickeningly sweet smile. "Some of us can be friendly without the intention of getting into someone's pants. I know that's a new concept for you."
"He doesn't see it that way."
"And I can handle that," I nodded. "Be sure he takes me to dinner first."
Kelly's jaw just clenched.
"Have a good night, Kelly," I waved before walking back inside.
Jay was still sitting at the bar, awkwardly tapping his fingers against the side of his glass.
"Hey, sorry about that," I said as I sat next to him again.
"Everything okay," he asked.
"Yeah," I nodded. "All taken care of."
Jay just nodded.
"You were telling me a story," I motioned for him to keep talking, wanting to get back into the conversation.
"Right, yeah..."
If Kelly came into the bar after that, I didn't see him.
I felt like a weight rolled off my shoulders as I had walked back inside that night. I felt more freedom. It was easier to breathe and smile and talk without focusing on every piece of my relationship with Kelly. I only had to focus on myself.
And I have to say... focusing on myself felt really, really good.

a ring to prove it
Tumblr media
Summary - She didn’t know if it was because of the wait since the last time they had been together or if it was the addition of the ring on her finger and the promises of a future together. Whatever it was, it had been hours and she was still tingling. She was back in Matt Casey’s arms and couldn’t be happier.
Notes - a little post 11x22 fic, happy reading! ❤️ AO3 Link
His breathing was steady, his heart rate had calmed from their exertions hours ago and he was peacefully asleep. But she was awake. Her head was resting on his chest, his arms tight around her even in his dreams, her fingers were tracing patterns in his skin remembering the expanses of muscle she had memorised those months before.
Being back in his arms was more than she had ever thought she would experience again. Somewhere along the line she had forgotten just how Matt Casey made her feel. What he made her feel by just being in his presence yes but also how he loved her. She had never fallen as hard off the proverbial cliff as she did when Matt had his hands or tongue on her, when he was inside her. She hadn’t been with anyone that way since she had ended them by a phone call. A phone call she both regretted and knew was the right thing at that moment.
Dylan was nice enough but he didn’t make her want to rip her clothes off the way Matt did. And any pleasure she had given herself even when they were together, it was Matt’s name that passed through her lips when she finished. It was his eyes she saw staring back at her when she closed her eyes.
And last night had been nothing short of mind blowing. She didn’t know if it was because of the wait since the last time they had been together or if it was the addition of the ring on her finger and the promises of a future together. Whatever it was, it had been hours and she was still tingling.
When she opened the door the day before and was greeted by the sight of Matt Casey on the other side, the last thing she had expected was for him to drop down on one knee and ask her to marry him.
‘Sylvie Brett, we were meant to be. Will you make me and three kids the luckiest family in the world and marry me?’
She had clutched at her chest, staring at the man she had wished for so long would do exactly what he was doing now and ask her to spend her life with him. She could see the ring shining in the box but her gaze was fixed directly on him, on his eyes, his smile.
She nodded, how could she do anything else but say yes. This was exactly what she had dreamed of.
‘Yes,’ she said, the tears spilling down her cheeks as Matt’s grin spread wider across his cheeks. She dropped to her knees in front of him, pulling his face to hers and melding their lips together. Her salty tears mingled in the kiss but she didn’t care, she had just said yes to marrying Matt Casey. They were going to be a family. Her, Matt, Ben, Griffin and Julia. Her family.
She let her fingers thread through his hair, it was slightly shorter than it had been at the wedding - the last time she had kissed him. His arms wound tightly around her waist, pulling her close to him from their slightly awkward position kneeling in front of each other.
‘Yes,’ she said in between kisses, ‘yes.’ She felt him grin against her lips and let herself get lost in the familiar sensation of his against hers. It was only when she felt her phone vibrating in the back pocket of her overalls she pulled away.
‘It’s Hermann,’ she said, her lips still swollen from the kiss but she hadn’t been expecting Hermann to call. ‘I better get this,’ Matt nodded, the smile not leaving his face and his arms didn’t relax his hold on her either. She didn’t make an attempt to move away from him as she swiped and answered the call.
Sylvie didn’t think either of them expected to be called to the hospital before Matt even had a chance to slide the ring onto her finger but he had pocketed the box as soon as she had ended the call having heard everything Hermann had said and said he would drive, wrapping her hand in his and leading her out to the car.
The car ride to the hospital was silent, the tears silently streaming down her face that had started as tears of joy were now ones of pain and worry. Matt kept a tight hold of her hand all the way to Med and she was grateful she had him to lean on as neither of them knew what to expect when they arrived. Hermann had sounded scared on the phone, he had tried to tell her he was sure Mouch would be okay but his voice had cracked and Sylvie’s heart had sunk. Mouch couldn’t be dying, she refused to even entertain the idea.
‘I think we shouldn’t tell them,’ she whispered into the silence of the car. ‘About us.’
Matt nodded. ‘I agree, this isn’t the moment.’ He held on a little tighter for the reminder of the journey, her own knuckles were going white at the pressure she was applying back on his.
He went to let go of her hand when they entered but Sylvie couldn’t bring herself to unlink their fingers, she needed him right now, needed the feeling of his warm skin against hers to ground her or else she might lose it. Her words to Matt had originally meant that she thought they should keep the fact they were back together underwraps but the further they walked into the hospital, she realised she just meant the engagement. She couldn’t let go of his hand right now. Wouldn’t let go of it.
No one commented on them walking in together hand in hand, no one said anything at all. The waiting room was eerily silent, their friends scattered around, heads in hands, staring at walls, silently crying. Matt and her joined them, finding two empty chairs and settling down next to Stella. Sylvie reached across and wrapped her other arm around the Lieutenant’s shoulder. No matter how many times they sat in hospital waiting rooms whilst one of their own was hurt - it never got any easier.
Sylvie didn’t know long they sat there, waiting for someone to bring them news. The waiting room was deep in the middle of the hospital with no windows, hours could have passed or it could have been mere minutes before a doctor in black scrubs came out and gave them the news they had been holding their breaths for.
‘He’s going to be okay,’ he said and Sylvie felt like the elephant that had been sitting on her chest constricting her breathing was finally removed. She leant into Matt’s side and let him wrap his arms around her pulling her safely into his chest.
Mouch was going to be okay. And she was going to marry Matt Casey.
——————————————————————————
On the way back to hers from the hospital, Mouch having kicked them all out saying he wasn’t having Chicago’s best sleeping in a waiting room if they didn’t need to, the air was lighter in the car.
‘Did you tell the boys?’ Sylvie wondered aloud.
‘Ben and Griffin?’ Matt clarified. ‘I did.’ He chuckled. ‘They were very excited at even the possibility of us getting back together. Pretty much pushed me out of the house to the airport when I said I was going to propose.’
Sylvie felt her cheeks redden. She had had no issues bonding with Griffin but it had taken time before Ben opened up to her but she had understood. His life hadn’t been easy and enough people had already let him down, he didn’t want to risk getting hurt again. The prospect of them both being back in her life, that they both wanted her back in their lives warmed her heart.
‘I told them about Julia too,’ Matt added with a small smile, glancing across at her as they pulled to a stop at a traffic light.
‘You did?’ Sylvie asked slightly shocked but pleasantly so.
‘Called them once you got the news, it felt right to let them know,’ Matt shrugged.
‘And they were happy about it?’ Sylvie was worried the addition of someone else into their family bubble could cause issues, especially for Ben.
‘Said they were going to spoil her rotten,’ Matt chuckled. ‘Ben said he would teach her how to mountain bike when she’s old enough - it’s his current favourite thing.’
They really were going to be a family, all of them together.
——————————————————————————
Matt stirred awake, groaning slightly as he was brought back into consciousness, his muscles contracting under Sylvie’s touch.
‘Morning,’ he said groggily, smiling down at where she had turned her focus to look up at him from her position on his chest.
‘Good morning,’ she whispered, reaching up to press her lips against his before relaxing back into his hold.
‘I could hear your mind working in my dreams,’ Matt said, stroking his fingers against the bare skin of her hip.
‘Mmm’ she hummed in response.
‘Want to share with the room?’ He asked and she smiled, pressing her face against his chest.
‘I was just thinking about our life,’ she admitted, with anyone else she would have blushed at her words but not with Matt. He always made her feel safe enough to speak truthfully, provided her the space to be exactly who she wanted to be without fear of judgement. She’d not always been so lucky in her past relationships.
Harrison hadn’t really wanted Sylvie Brett, he’d wanted the wife he thought he could mould Sylvie into being. He disliked everything about her that made her her. All the bright and caring aspects that made her who she was. He just wanted her to bend to his wishes and give up everything in her life that she cared about.
Antonio, goodness knows what he had wanted but it wasn’t what she had wanted. That was a relationship doomed to fail from the start, something she thought both of them had luckily realised before it got too late.
Kyle wanted a preacher's wife, he thought he was giving her what she wanted - space away from Chicago after her accident. But that wasn’t her either. She was a Chicago girl now, and that was where she belonged.
But Matt, Matt wanted her exactly how she was, all the blemishes and flaws along with the shiny and good. He supported her through everything, had been her number one cheerleader even before they had realised how they felt about each other. His heart was everything good and Sylvie loved him for it.
‘It's going to be a beautiful life,’ Matt said, bringing up the hand not wrapped around hers to run his fingers over the ring that now graced her left hand.
‘What time is your flight?’ She asked quietly. They’d spoken about him going back to Oregon in between rounds last night when their skin was still tacky with sweat, their legs refusing to untangle themselves.
‘I have to go back to Oregon tomorrow,’ he said into the quiet night air. ‘But only to wrap things up,’ he tightened his hold on her, one hand continuing to trail up and down her bare back. ‘It should only take a couple of weeks.’
‘Okay,’ Sylvie muttered. She knew he wanted to be back in Chicago as much as she wanted him back, he had shown her how much just a moment ago.
‘I agreed with CFD to start teaching at the academy in 6 weeks, they know I want back in the action but teaching will do until they can find me a house,’ he said, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
‘I’ll take you to the airport tomorrow,’ Sylvie said. This wouldn’t be like last time. They had a plan this time. He was coming back to her, he was going to marry her.
‘I think it’s just past midday,’ Matt said and Sylvie chuckled at his vagueness. ‘I’ll check when this beautiful woman lets me out of her bed,’ he said in mock offence at her laugh.
‘I can let you out now if you’d like,’ Sylvie sassed, making a move to untangle herself but Matt groaned and pulled her back against his chest.
‘Never,’ he murmured as he peppered her face with kisses and her soft giggles filled the room.
‘I’ll call you as soon as I land,’ he said as the pair settled back into their embrace, the covers pooling around their waists as his movements had shifted them slightly.
‘Okay,’ she said, resuming tracing patterns against his chest.
‘When will Julia arrive?’ He asked curiously.
‘I think a couple of days,’ Sylvie admitted. ‘Although Amber took back custody, there’s still papers to sign. You know how it is with the DFS.’
‘You’re going to give her the most beautiful life Sylvie,’ Matt murmured against her hair.
‘We are,’ Sylvie corrected him. Although technically she was doing this alone and it was her name on the paperwork, she wanted Matt by her side every step of the way. And she knew he was all in. ‘We are going to have the most wonderful family.’
‘We are,’ Matt said, his words reminiscent of when she had finally admitted her feelings to him in the middle of the night out on the North Apron.
‘We will have the most incredible life, all of us together.’
‘We will.’
‘And we have each other. Forever. We are it for each other.’
‘We are,’ Matt repeated.
Sylvie wasn’t looking forward to saying goodbye to him in just a few hours, but she knew this goodbye would be their last. When he returned, it would be for good. They would be together. She had a ring on her finger to prove it.

Massage - Leslie Shay

Can you stop moaning? I’m trying to help you relax but you’re making it hard for me to concentrate.” “Sorry, your hands just work a little too good.” “I’m going to pay for a masseuse next time if you keep doing this.” [shay]
Working at the fire station meant long hours, heavy lifting, pulling, pushing. And basically just pushing yourself to your limits whenever you were on shift. And being at 51 just made it worse.
The house of all houses. Crazy calls. Crazy people. It was like Chicago+ when it came to the type of incidents your team got called to. And to add to that, being on squad which takes care of all the unique and extra types of rescues?
You were achy. Very achy. Especially after the call today which included a little boy and a vat of chocolate and a very precise and awkward lifting position. Luckily though, you had a loving girlfriend.
“Baby?” You’re voice was soft as you made your way into the bedroom where she was laying, looking at something on her phone.
Leslie shay was probably one of the best paramedics you’d ever seen. Since the day she joined 51 you knew she was gonna fit in instantly. And she did, meshed with the team perfectly and it didn’t take long for you to get a big huge crush on her.
She hummed questionably, dropping her phone the second she saw you, giving all of her attention in your direction. “Do you think you could rub my back? It hurts like a bitch after today.” You muttered, crawling onto the bed.
Of course she nodded, a smile pulling onto her lips, “Sure, c’mere.” Leslie shifted out of the way, patting the mattress. She even smoothed out the blanket, sliding a pillow so you could rest your head against it.
As soon as you were laying in the right spot she moved to sit on your lower back, sliding her hands up your spine with just the right amount of pressure. “Think it would feel better without your shirt in the way?” Her tone innocent, as she leaned back to pull at it.
You shifted up, pulling it off before laying back down, able to feel Leslie’s usually cold but now slightly warm hands on your skin.
“Damn baby, your back is tight as hell.” She muttered, kneading her palms into the muscle behind your shoulder blade. Slowly she twisted her hands, pressing her thumbs into your skin, hitting one of the worst spots.
A slight moan left your lips, cheeks going red as you tried to keep your face hidden, ignoring it. Leslie on the other hand heard and couldn’t hide the light smirk that grew on her face.
She made her way down, shaking her head as another groan left your lips, “Can you stop moaning? I’m trying to help you relax but you’re making it hard for me to concentrate.” Shay spoke with a light laugh, your face growing even hotter.
“I’m sorry, your hands just work a little too good.”
“I’m going to pay for a masseuse next time if you keep doing this.” She pretended to threaten, your eyebrow lifting slightly, unable to look back at her.
Slightly you let out a breath, “And I would have no qualms. I do like your hands more though,” You spoke as she rubbed at the bottom of your ribs, hands slightly going around you.
Leslie nodded to herself, “Mhm, I can tell you do,” She teased, slowly and precisely massaging a knot out of your muscle.
“Okay you did that one on purpose-“ You mumbled into the pillow after a guttural moan grew in your throat. Shay leaned forward, kissing your back lightly.
“You have no evidence for that claim.” She whispered, pressing another kiss right below that one before she sat up, continuing to do what she had promised to do.
You rolled over when she was finished, your hands finding her instantly. “That felt amazing, thank you,” You spoke softly, grabbing one of her hands to kiss the top of it.
She had other plans, leaning down to press into a kiss, her hands pulling away to grab at your face. You hummed quietly, holding her sides as she leaned over you, looking up at her when she pulled away.
“That is for being such a tease just now.”

Felicitysmoaksx 25 Advent Writing Challenge
IT'S BACK!
I had so much fun with this challenge last year that I'm bringing it back again! So could you send a drabble prompt for the One Chicago Fandom? I’m looking for 25 of them to do an advent calendar writing challenge for myself. I'll start writing December 1st. Also, you can leave as many requests as you want! There’s no cap until I reach 25!
Here is my ask box and a list of memes to pursue for inspiration.
Also as a side note, I won't be doing reader images this year. They're just too draining for me right now.

Tumblr media
When you came into Kelly’s life 6 years ago, he was shocked but it was to be expected especially with all the sleeping around he did. You had shown up on his doorstep in your car seat with a note pinned to the diaper bag. He didn't know what to do but when you opened your blue eyes, the ones you got from him, he knew that you were gonna stay and that was it. After first he was apprehensive about telling his team but he needed all the help he could get and the fears he thought he was gonna have of them bashing him and putting him down flew out the window. Afterall Firehouse 51 was a family and family looked out for one another. With him telling them about you means you just got a lot of really cool aunts and uncles and you are going to be really protected.
He was really pissed at your mother for just abandoning you but now you were with him safe and sound. You were the result of a drunken one-night stand, he didn’t even know you existed or that she was pregnant until you just showed up on his doorstep. He despised her and would have some words for her if he ever saw her and he hoped for her sake that he never saw her.
You loved your dad dearly. When you had met him just when you were a few days old you grew close to him, then again, he was the only parent you had. You depended on him for everything and looked up to him for everything and you felt like you could come to him when something went wrong when you were growing up. You had changed his lifestyle for the good he had stopped drinking until he was blacked out and he stopped bringing random women home. He adored you and you adored him. Nothing could break that bond between you both. Everyone was shocked when they noticed how much his mood had brightened and he wasn’t such a hard ass. Kelly loved showing you off and when you found out his job, he just became your favorite person all over again. He was your hero.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
It was a Thursday morning and his alarm started to go off at 7:30 AM signaling him to get up and start getting ready for the day and his shift. Normally he would be getting you up to but since your school had been called off due to the heating and sickness going around you would be staying home. He didn’t have to go into work until 10 AM so he would have a little bit of time with you.
Kelly took a shower and then got dressed in his uniform and brushed his teeth, next he moved out of his room and down the hall to check in on you. He slowly opened the door and smiled seeing that you were still sound asleep and snoring just slightly. He smiled and shook his head. He went into the kitchen and started some breakfast and coffee and then went and switched over the laundry and started getting ready for his 24 hr shift. He needed to call Kimber Halstead to tell her that he would need her. When he found you on his doorstep, he immediately started to look for a babysitter and when Jay and Will, his good friends, heard about this and met you they immediately got him in touch with their younger sister, who he was also good friends with. You and Kimber hit off and the rest was history and she became your babysitter and she only babysat you. She was going to school so it was the perfect opportunity for some extra cash and you were pretty easy to keep. He pulled out his phone as he pulled down a coffee cup and grabbed the pot and poured some coffee in it. He went to her contact and clicked on it and then the call icon, it rang twice before she answered.
“Kelly! What do I owe the pleasure of this call?” Kimber asked
“Hello, Kimber. I need you to watch Y/N/N. Her school is closed due to some sickness and the heat is out.” He said and took a sip of his coffee.
“I would love to.” She said “Do you want me to come over now?” She asked
“Please. I’m gonna have breakfast ready so you can eat here.” He said and he could hear her smile.
“That sounds good. I’ll be over in 5.” She said
“Great. I’ll see you soon.” Kelly said
“See ya, Kelly.” She said and they hung up the phone.
He put his phone on the counter and then his coffee cup and headed to your room. He opened the door and saw that you had turned over in your sleep and he walked over and knelt down by your bed. He watched you for a minute and then he was stroking your head. You groaned and but your nose scrunched up, a sign you were waking up. “Y/N/N. Sweetheart. It’s time to get up. Kimber will be here soon.” He said and you groaned but blinked your eyes open and cracked them.
“Daddy?” You asked and he smiled.
“Good morning, Sweetheart.” He said and you smiled and then wrapped your arms around him and he picked you up. He started to walk to the kitchen.
“What about school?” You asked, still confused and you laid your head on his shoulder.
“School is closed due to a heating issue and sickness going around.” He said and you nodded and then he sat you down on a chair. “Kimber will be here soon and breakfast is almost ready.” He said and you nodded. Normally he would be having you getting ready for school but since there wasn’t any, he would let it pass and Kimber would be getting you ready for the day. He had just got done mixing the pancake batter when there was a knock at the door and he knew it was Kimber. “You wanna get that?” He asked you and you smiled, you rarely got to open the door but he knew who it was because it was about that time when she said she was going to be there and the Ring notification he got on his phone. You quickly jumped up and ran to the door “Be careful!” He yelled out and listened to you open the door and let out a screech.
“KIMBER!” You yelled out and he heard a laugh from her.
“Hey, Sweetie.” She said “Your daddy know you answered the door?” She asked and he could just see you nod.
“Yes, he let me!” You said excitedly and she chuckled.
“Well, as long as he said it was ok.” She said and she was walking into the kitchen holding you.
“Hi, Kelly.” She said with a smile and he looked up.
“Hi. Breakfast is almost ready.” He said as he flipped the bacon and the pancake.
“Y/N/N, you wanna help me get cups and drinks ready?” She said and you nodded wildly and they both laughed. You love helping out when you can. She walked over and got the glasses and handed them to you and they watched you carefully take them over to the table. Kimber got the milk and orange juice out as Kelly took the last of the pancakes and the bacon off and walked them over to the table. Everyone sat down and served themselves.
“What do you girls have planned today?” Kelly asked and Kimber answered since your mouth was full.
“If it is warm enough, we’ll go play in the backyard and then maybe go out for lunch. Then just play it by ear.” She said and you nodded excitedly.
“That sounds fun.” He said
“It is, Daddy!” You said and he smiled. Breakfast was finished quickly and dishes were put in the dishwasher and Kelly had disappeared to grab his duffle and walked out and just stood in the doorway watching you and Kimber have the time of your life in the living room. You were the first one to notice him “Daddy!” You yelled out and quickly ran up to him and jumped into his arms and hugged you tightly. Kimber walked over and then took you from his arms.
“It’s time for daddy to leave. You be good for Kimber and do what she says.” He said and you nodded.
“I promise, Daddy.” You said and he smiled and leaned over to kiss your head and then pulled away and looked at Kimber.
“Don’t hesitate to call if something happens or you need me. If you can’t get ahold of me, you can call Jay and he’ll know how to get ahold of me.” Kelly said and she nodded.
“Don’t worry. I’ll call you if something happens and I also have Will if something medical comes up but I will let you know.” She said and he smiled and nodded.
“I know you will. I trust you.” He said and then looked back at you. “Daddy loves you.” He said to you and kissed your head again.
“I love you too, Daddy.” You said and he smiled and then grabbed his keys by the front door and was out the door and heading into work.
“Alright, Little One. What do you want to do first?” She asked, looking at you.
“Blanket fort!” You said excitedly and she laughed.
“You got it!” She said back. She sat you down and the both of you set out to find the materials you needed.
20 minutes later and the fort was ready to be used. Your imagination ran wild and Kimber was all for it. Movies were watched and crafts were made in that fort. During the 5th movie you had fallen asleep snuggled up against Kimber and she pulled out her phone and read through some college stuff she needed to read and every now and then checked in on you. She figured she would let you sleep for an hour and then have you get up and get your teeth brushed and dressed then you would go out for lunch and a walk in the park maybe stop in and see your dad. Then you both would come home and play some in the backyard.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Kelly was exhausted since he had gotten to work. It was nonstop calls; he hadn't even had a break to sit down and check on you and Kimber. Everyone had just gotten back and quickly got the trucks and ambulance done and then they were going to try and have a moment of peace. While everyone was preoccupied, he stepped away and pulled out his phone. He had a few new messages from Kimber and they were pictures of you smiling and goofing around, he smiled and saved them on his phone. One particular one, you were playing with bubbles and she captured the image through the bubble and you were smiling and just being yourself, he set it as his background on his phone when he unlocked it.
He was about to call and ask how you two were doing when he heard a familiar voice “Sylvie!” You yelled out and he smiled.
“Hey, Y/N. Looking for your dad?” She asked
“Uh huh.” You said and he walked out into the garage and when you spotted him you ran straight to him and jumped into his arms. “Daddy!” You shouted and he laughed and hugged you gently but tightly back.
“Hey, Sweetheart. I'm surprised to see you.” He said and you just hugged him tighter and everyone smiled glad to see him happy but continued on with working so you could have some time with him.
“She really wanted to see her daddy and I told her we could. It was on the way home from lunch and the park.” Kimber said he smiled and nodded and then sat you down.
“Did you have fun?” He asked
“Yes! We saw a bunch of dogs at the park and most of them were friendly and I got to pet them.” You said with so much brightness in your eyes. He smiled loving that look.
“That sounds like fun. Did you ask permission first?” He asked and you nodded.
“Of course, Daddy.” You said and he smiled. You and Kimber stayed there for a few minutes until it was time to go home and start getting your school work done. “Bye, Daddy. I love you.” You said and he smiled. He hugged and kissed the side of your head.
“I love you too. Be safe.” He said and you nodded and then he and Kimber said their goodbyes and he watched you walk out of the station almost skipping and he could tell you were laughing and smiling and that made him smile.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
You made it back home safely and Kimber let you dad know. She put her phone away and then turned to you “Ok, I want you to do your homework and then we can go outside and play.” She said in a serious tone and you nodded.
“Ok.” You said and then you went and got your backpack and started your work. While you were working, she was working on some of her college work, every now and then you would ask her for help and she helped you. You got what you needed done quickly and then you both were heading outside. Kimber had brought her school work outside so she could work and watch you at the same time.
Every now and then you would come over and ask her to play and she did and then when you were done, she went back to work. Sometimes she would look up and smile at you having fun. “Y/N, come inside with me to get something to drink.” She said and you looked up from your position in the sand box and got up and headed inside with her. “Do you want a snack?” She asked and you nodded your head.
“Do we have any grapes and apples?” You asked and she smiled and nodded.
“Why yes, we do! I want you to drink something you’ve been running around a lot, don't want you dehydrated.” She said and you nodded and drank some water and ate something and then she brought the rest out with you both. You resumed your position back into the sandbox not seeing that it had sunken in. You were too busy playing to notice that you were starting to sink into the ground. You continued on playing and then you felt a huge drop and that freaked you out.
“Kimber.” You said scared and she looked up and her eyes bugged out.
“Hold on, Sweetie. I’m coming.” She said and hurried over as the chair tipped backwards.
“I’m scared. I want daddy.” You said beginning to panic.
“It’s ok Y/N/N. We’re going to get you out.” She said and she motioned you to grab her hands and you did but when she began to pull you yelped out in pain and she stopped and you slipped in further and that made you panic and panicking only made you sink deeper. “Don’t panic. It’ll only make it worse. I’m gonna call 911. Ok?” She asked and you nodded your head.
“911 what’s your emergency?” The 911 operator asked.
“Hi, my name is Kimber Halstead and I’m babysitting Y/N Severide at 251 Spiral Lane and she is stuck in a sandbox.” Kimber said
“How old is Y/N?” They asked
“She’s 6. I tried to pull her out but she just sank further down. She then began panicking and sank further.” She said
“It sounds like she is in a sinkhole. Keep her calm and don’t make her panic, it’ll just make her sink further.” They said
“Kimber, I can’t breathe.” You said
“Did she just say she can’t breathe?” They asked
“Yes.” Kimber said
“Ok, keep her calm and I have dispatched the nearest first responders.” They said
“Thank you.” Kimber said and turned to look at you.
“Did you hear that? Daddy is coming to the rescue.” Kimber said, trying to keep you calm.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Kelly, Otis, Stella, Sylvie, Gabby, and Herrmann had all sat down to relax and watch some TV and grab something to eat when the bell went off and they groaned but then Kelly turned rigid.
“Engine 51, Truck 81, Rescue Squad 3, Ambulance 61.  6 year old female stuck in a sinkhole, having trouble breathing. Location 251 Spiral Lane.”
Everyone looked over at Kelly and they instantly knew who it was and they were quick to grab their gear and get into their vehicles and rush over there. Kelly was silent as he got in “Kelly.” Joe began but Kelly wasn’t hearing him; he was worried about his child.
“She’s going to be ok. We’re 2 minutes out.” Capp said but that didn’t make him feel any better.
True to Capp’s word they arrived at Kelly’s house and he was the first one out. Everyone quickly got their stuff and they followed him through the back gate knowing this path all too well. He left the gate wide open and when he saw you, he wanted to grab you and pull you out and hold you but he needed to stay calm for you. He was quick to come over and when you saw him you cried out to him. “Daddy!” You yelled out and you struggled to reach him but you sank further.
“No, Baby. It’s ok. I’m here.” He said and knelt down and took in his surroundings. He looked at Kimber “What happened?” He asked.
“She was perfectly fine playing in it earlier and then I had her come in and eat and drink something. Then we came back out and she resumed her playing and then she said my name and I looked up from doing some school work and she was sinking.” She said and he nodded, he wasn't mad.
“Daddy, I can’t breathe.” You said and he turned his attention back to you and then to Gabby who was bringing over oxygen.
“Gabby is going to be something over your nose and mouth to help.” He said and you nodded and looked at Gabby and she smiled.
“Hi, Y/N/N.” She said
“Hi.” You wheezed out.
“I’m just gonna put this over your nose and mouth.” She said and you nodded and she did so and air rushed into you.
“Ok, Severide hold her up and watch her. Capp and Cruz start digging. Gabby and Sylvie monitor her vitals. Everyone else start helping out.” Boden said and everyone nodded and got to work. As they were working something happened and you started to slip in further.
“Daddy?” You wheezed out and he soothed you.
“It’s ok, Sweetheart. You’ll be out soon.” He said and you nodded but you started to become light headed.
“I don’t feel good.” You said and then about that time your eyes rolled into the back of your head and you passed out.
“Woah. Ok. Can we go faster?” Sylvie asked and everyone started working faster. 16 minutes later they got you out and onto the stretcher and quickly loaded into the Ambulance as Kelly and Kimber followed.
“Kelly, I’m so sorry.” Kimber said and he shook his head.
“No need to apologize. Accidents happen.” He said and she nodded, still feeling guilty.
“I’m going to meet you up there.” She said and he nodded and then got into the back of the ambulance and nobody argued because you were his kid. They were quick to get going to Med. Kelly heard Sylvie and Gabby talking but he tuned them out and wasn’t listening to him too concerned about you.
They made it to Med in no time and they were quick to get you out and into the ER. Will was the one that was going to be taking care of you. “How long has she been out?” He asked.
“Around 20 minutes now.” Kelly answered and he nodded and helped transfer you to a bed. Will started trying to arouse you but nothing was working. He took a listen to you and heard some crackling in your lungs and grew concerned.
“I want to admit it. Get her some x-rays and get a line started on her.” Will said and Kelly nodded and that is what they did. With you being unconscious and that concerned everyone. X-rays were taken and it turned out that you had broken some ribs from being stuck in the sand and that caused enough pressure to crack some ribs. When they moved you into the room Will looked over at Kelly “I want to monitor until she wakes up and if she does let me know.” He said an IV line had already been started. Will left the room and that just left Kelly alone with you. He sat there looking at you and then he looked down at his phone and saw his lock screen, it was you and him, he was holding you and you had been looking back over his shoulder smiling at the camera when you were 4 and Stella had taken the picture, she smiled at it. He texted everyone an update and they had come in and saw him but they needed back to work. Kimber came and stayed the longest but Kelly sent her home and promised her an update and because she was so shaken up that she needed rest. Will was in and out checking on you but nothing had changed.
It was beginning into the night and he had drifted off to sleep still in uniform. He may have been asleep for about 20 minutes until he heard rustling around and he slowly woke to find you awake and groaning in pain. “Daddy?” You asked groggily and he was quick to get up.
“Sweetheart.” He said and leaned over you “I’m gonna get Will. Ok?” He asked and you nodded and he did just that and Will had come in.
“Hey there, Mini Kelly.” He said and that made everyone smile. Usually, Will was the only one to call you that. “How are you feeling?” He asked.
“Hurts to breathe.” You said and he nodded.
“That’s understandable. You broke some ribs.” He said and you nodded and then turned to address you and your father “I want to keep her overnight just for observation since she was unconscious.” He said and Kelly nodded. You tuned them out since they were using words you didn’t understand and then Will was smiling at you “I’ll see you later on.” He said and you smiled at him.
“Bye, Uncle Will.” You said and he chuckled and left. “Daddy?” You asked and he looked at you.
“Hmmm?” He asked
“Do we have to get rid of the sandbox?” You asked and he smiled sadly.
“Yea we do, Sweetheart.” He said and you nodded.
“Ok. Love you.” You said and he smiled and then you yawned.
“I love you too. Get some sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up.” He said as he leaned over and kissed your forehead and you fell back to sleep. He stayed up for the rest of the night and updated everyone. He vowed to himself that the next day he had off he was going to take out that sandbox and fill that hole. He was going to protect you no matter what. Afterall you were his daughter, his life, and his pride of joy.
You were just glad that your daddy came to your rescue.

You always were a details girl. You always did like to delve deep in the way you describe things. It's one of the things Otis loved about you.
Your passion for the things you loved. The way you talked so enthusiastically about your favourite movies or TV shows that your eyes would light up and your smile would grow so wide that you got those cute little dimples on your cheeks. The ones Otis always loved to see.
The guys had been quick to discover that once they got you talking about something, it was pretty hard to get you to stop. Whether you'd be spouting useless information that you just happened to have in your head, for example when you started to tell Cruz all about the different ways pennies were made when he'd only asked you if you could break his twenty dollar bill into some smaller change.
Or when you started mumbling to Mouch about the lifespans of different sharks when he happened to flick past the nature channel on the TV. Whatever it may be, whatever topic of conversation that may be going on inside the firehouse, you always seemed to have an opinion.
But when it came to talking about your sex life, well let's just say that you didn't often leave much to the imagination. Or at least, that's what Shay would come to think when she finally asked you how things were going in your relationship with Otis.
"Hey, Y/N, how are things going with you and Otis?" Shay asked as the two of you gave the ambulance a quick scrub before the bells went off. "You've been together for what, like seven months now?"
"I think so... It's coming up to my one year anniversary here so yeah, that sounds about right." You replied as you stripped the sheets from the gurney.
It hadn't felt like a year since you met Otis. Since you joined firehouse fifty-one as their new paramedic in charge after Dawson made the switch to firefighter. In all honesty, it felt as though you'd been here for five years, you managed to fit in so well.
"God, has it only been that long? Feels like I've been here forever." You added, spraying some disinfectant on the gurney before you began to wipe it down. "But things are going great. Really great actually."
"What's really great?" Gabby curiously chipped in as she came into view at the back of the ambulance, leaning her arm against the open door and not at all envying the two of you.
"Y/N's relationship with Otis." Shay teased, making you roll your eyes as you could see the smile on her face even though she had her back to you.
"Oh, yeah?" Gabby smiled, sharing the same scheming look with Shay as she stepped closer to the ambulance, glancing round to make sure none of the guys were nearby before she spoke again. "What's it like... You know, with Otis."
"You mean the sex?" You so bluntly put it, making Shay chuckle softly at your not so subtle attitude.
"Yeah, I mean... Is he any good?" Gabby's hushed voice asked, curiosity getting the better of her as she wanted to know just how Otis had managed to snag himself a girl like you. As no offence to Otis, but you were incredibly out of his league.
"Are you kidding?" You scoffed softly, abandoning your cleaning duties as you shuffled closer to them on the bench. You'd been waiting to hear that exact question for ages now so you could finally spill exactly how much you'd underestimated Otis in his bedroom skills. "Girl, you would not believe the things that man can do."
"Wait, are you serious?" Gabby whispered in disbelief, her eyes as wide as Shay's were as even she was having trouble believing what she was hearing.
"Oh, I'm dead serious." You said, rather seriously. "I mean, I've slept with a few guys in my lifetime but none of them, and I mean none of them even came close to making me feel what Brian does."
"Well, come on girl, spill... I wanna hear everything." Shay encouraged, earning herself a chuckle from Gabby. "What? Just cause I'm gay I don't get to hear?"
"No, no. It's just..." Gabby began, thinking to herself as to what way to phrase this. "I didn't think you'd be interested in hearing about sex involving men."
"I mean I'm not... Ew. Gross. But... This is Otis we're talking about. Sweet, dorky, innocent Otis. So you bet your ass, I wanna hear this." Shay replied, turning her attention back towards you.
"He is far from innocent, I'll tell you that much." You chuckled around a scoff.
The first thing you'd learned about Otis the day the two of you ended up in your bedroom was that he was far from the innocent man you expected him to be. In fact, he was the complete opposite in that once he was comfortable in the situation, he could become an animal when it came to giving you exactly what you wanted.
"Stop, are you serious? Our Otis... The guy who collects Doctor Who legos?" Gabby asked wide eyed.
"Oh yeah." You nodded, smile widening a little more as you knew knowing this information about Otis would make the girls seem impressed when they were around him. Something you knew he needed.
"I mean, he can be wild when he wants to be but at the same time..." You continued, Gabby and Shay's attention 100% focused on you as you all but blew their minds. "...he's so gentle and loving. The way he treats me. The way he looks at me... Making me feel like the only woman in the world... And God, the way he touches me. The way he explores every single inch of my body like he'd never seen it before, like he'd never touched it before? Not to mention the things he can do with his tongue because wow... It would be enough to make any woman desperate, and believe me... Once he's done with all that, I'm practically begging for him to fuck me."
"Is it wrong that I'm turned on right now?" Shay questioned, her tone dead serious which got a good laugh from you and Gabby.
"Maybe just a little." You chuckled, motioning with your fingers as the tip of your thumb touched lightly against your forefinger. "But I don't blame you... I turned myself on a little too. Might have to pull Otis into the showers for a quickie."
"Y/N." Gabby laughed, shaking her head as she ignored the look you fired her way. The one that said she couldn't talk given the amount of times she and Casey made it pretty obvious they were getting it on in the firehouse.
"But seriously though... Did you ever imagine yourself getting together with Otis when you joined?" Shay asked after the laughter died down a little and things settled.
You took a second to think to yourself, completely unaware that Otis had been on his way to find you when he heard Shay ask you that question. It had stopped him dead in his tracks, hidden by the truck as he patiently awaited your answer, his heart pounding in his chest as he had no idea how you'd respond.
Otis knew he wasn't your type, not when your ex had shown up at the firehouse a few months ago trying to get you back, to which you so blatantly told him to get fucked. But even then he knew he was nothing compared to that guy. Your ex was handsome, muscular. His six pack was pretty obvious under his tight tank top, which showed his bulging muscles off in a way that made Otis roll his eyes.
He'd been intimidated the minute the guy stepped foot into the firehouse and said he was your ex. He didn't think you'd ever go for him after that and had it not been for the four shots of tequila Shay made him drink, he'd probably never have asked you out. But you'd said yes. You'd actually agreed to go out with him the day after you told your ex to get lost. The day after you told a man that most women would throw themselves at, to get out of your life.
You'd basically picked him. Otis. The rather short, not so muscular and let's face it, pretty dorky elevator guy. You picked him over a guy who could model for Calvin Klein if he really wanted to. And even though you'd been together for seven months now, he still felt insecure in the relationship.
And when you answered Shay's question, it made the doubt he had in the back of his mind all the more clear as he couldn't help but think you'd finally realised your mistake in agreeing to go out with him.
"Honestly... No." Your answer all but broke Otis's heart as he stood there listening to you, unable to walk away as he needed to hear what else you had to say. "My entire first month here I never even thought twice about him... Never thought I'd ever get together with him as let's face it, he's not exactly my type..."
The rest of your words went unheard by Otis as he finally mustered up the strength to walk away, his eyes stinging with tears he so desperately fought against. He couldn't believe what he'd just heard. He couldn't believe how open you'd been by saying he wasn't your type. Which granted, he knew that, but still, it didn't make it any easier to hear fall from your lips. And in front of Shay and Dawson too? God, he couldn't begin to fathom the embarrassment, not to mention the heartbreak, in which he felt right now.
Had you just been playing him this whole time? Making him think you like him? Making him believe that he was good at sex, good at relationships? Was all of this just some sort of long con to build up his self confidence before knocking it all down? Breaking his heart in the process?
Otis hadn't told you he loved you yet. He'd been planning to, but the timing never seemed right. Never seemed perfect enough for something so important. But now he was glad he hadn't told you, otherwise he'd have just given you more ammunition to use against him in whatever game you appeared to be playing.
God, he felt so stupid now. So pathetic. So debased. He didn't want to believe that you were just tagging him along but at the same time, with your words rattling around inside his mind, he couldn't help it. It was all he could think about from the moment he heard those words slip through the lips in which he loved to kiss. The lips he never thought he'd get to kiss again, at least not until you found him moments later and explained the situation properly. Then he just felt like an idiot.
"Baby?" Your concerned voice reached Otis's ears as you came into view, his red rimmed eyes meeting yours in the mirror as he stood in the bathrooms, gripping the sink with such force you were surprised the metal hadn't sunk beneath his hands.
You stepped closer to him, furrowing your brow at the way his nostrils seemed to flare out of anger, the complete opposite of what you thought he was feeling given the shine of tears you could see in his eyes.
"Brian, what is it?" You asked, placing your hand softly on his shoulder but feeling your heart clench when he so roughly shrugged it off.
"I heard you." He gritted, his jaw tensing more than you'd ever seen it do before as he turned to face you.
"Heard me?" You repeated, puzzled being an understatement as to what you felt right now. "I'm not sure I know what you mean." You folded your arms, watching as he placed his hands on his hips and scoffed softly to himself, looking anywhere but into your eyes. Which made you certain he was pissed as often times he couldn't seem to tear his eyes away from yours.
"I heard you talking... To Dawson and Shay. About us." He spat, a little harsher than he'd have meant to but right now he couldn't help it. He felt embarrassed.
"Okay..." You replied, a little more relaxed than Otis would have liked. You leaned against the sink, crossing your arms across your chest before you carried on. "...and you're mad why? Because I told them about our sex life?"
"What? No." Otis shook his head, not fully taking in what you'd just said. "I'm talking about how you so happily told them I wasn't your type. That you never saw yourself dating me. That you never thought twice about me until I told you I liked you."
The lack of anything on your face only added to Otis's anger and frustration, and when you laughed... When you actually, physically laughed, well that was enough to almost push him over the edge towards calling things between you off entirely.
"Oh, baby." You chuckled, pushing yourself off the sink and stepping towards him. Your fingers walked lightly up his rapidly moving chest, trailing them along his neck before your hand landed on the side of his rather heated face. "I think you misinterpreted what I was saying."
"Did I?" He eyed you, his tone accusatory as he watched you run your tongue over your teeth.
"You did." You nodded, running your thumb soothingly down the edge of his moustache. "I'm guessing you didn't hear the entirety of our girl talk did you?"
"I don't... Girl talk?" Otis repeated, finding himself puzzled now as his mind began to wander.
"That's right... Girl talk." You whispered, leaning up to place a short, yet sweet kiss against his lips. "In which they ask me how our relationship is going... And I tell them. In detail."
"I don't- I'm not..." Otis stammered out, reaching his hand up to scratch nervously at the back of his head.
"You didn't hear the rest of my sentence did you?" You asked softly, Otis shaking his head gently as you ran your thumb down his lips. "Then let me repeat it for you... I said, I never even thought I'd ever get together with you because you weren't exactly my type... But, now that I'm with you. Now that I've fallen in love with you... What my type used to be, doesn't matter anymore. Because there isn't anyone else I'd rather be with than you."
"You- You're in love with me?" Otis whispered, unable to believe what he'd just heard pass your lips. And to think if he'd just waited another thirty seconds then he wouldn't have stupidly sent himself in a downward spiral of meaningless thoughts about your relationship.
"Only madly." You replied, biting gently at your bottom lip before you leaned forward, your lips brushing against his as you spoke. "Kinda hard not to be when you're the best sex I've ever had in my life."
Otis swallowed, and hard too. He couldn't seem to find it in him to reply to what you'd just said, instead the corners of his lips rose a little as he leaned down, brushing his lips lightly over yours before planting them firmly against them. The kiss was hot and heavy, the two of you all but devouring each other. Starving. Hungry. Begging for air yet never wanting to break apart.
Eventually though, the two of you had to pull apart, your lungs desperate for air as you let out quick, ragged breaths. If you hadn't been turned on already, you'd certainly be now after a kiss like that.
"I think you were right." Otis whispered, breathless as he leaned his forehead against yours. "I think I did misinterpret your girl talk."
"Oh really, and what makes you say that?" You teased, pushing yourself closer to him and feeling how he twitched beneath you, stumbling over his words which came out as a groan rather than anything intelligible.
His eyes shut briefly as he took a breath, finding yours staring back at him as he opened them again. You were quick to notice the lack of anger and worry you'd seen previously behind his eyes, having been replaced by a scheming glint, one that was so clearly backed up by the small grin that rose to his face. He leaned forward, his lips brushing against yours before they moved towards your ear.
"Because I can practically feel the heat radiating from between your legs." He whispered, his voice only adding to said heat as the warmth of his breath travelled down your spine and joined that which was pooling between your legs.
"Brian Zvonecek, you better drag me into those showers and fuck me or I swear to God-"
"Oh you'll be swearing alright..." He said deeply into your ear, his fingers digging hard into the flesh of your hips as he all but kept you from falling to the ground. He brushed your hair aside, planting a heated, lingering kiss against the nape of your neck which had you weak at the knees. "Because baby, by the time I'm finished with you... You're going to have one hell of a story to tell during your next girl talk, that much is guaranteed."

They were already doing everything a married would do, and Kelly decided that it was time for them to make it legal.
***
That T-shirt right there, your hair messed up like a Guns-n-Roses video
"Shh, babe." Kelly laughed, "You are going to wake up Shay."
"No, I won't." Libby said with a giggle, "She has a girl over anyways. My giggling won't bring her out of the haze she is in. She has a one-track mind especially when it comes to pretty brunettes."
The leader of the rescue squad laughed and grasped a hold of her forearm to keep her steady. Cruz and Otis had kept handing her different shots to see if she would get sloppy drunk.
But as he thought, she didn't get giggly or handsy until they left the bar to come home. He had seen her drink with her three older brothers and knew that she could handle her booze with the best of them.
And it was just great to see the expressions on Cruz and Otis's faces when they realized their plan didn't work. "But still do you want to deal with a cranky Shay tomorrow?"
"No." Libby said pushing the door to their bedroom open, 'You do know that this is all Cruz and Otis's fault, right?"
"Oh, I know." He said following her into the bedroom and reaching his hand out to unzip her dress, 'I told them that they could come to take care of you if you weren't feeling good tomorrow."
Libby wiggled out of her dress and gave her boyfriend an offended look. "We Reagans don't get sick or hung over Severide. Expect for Danny but then again he takes after the Reilly side of the family."
"I know I remember hearing the story about his cadet class reunion," Kelly said watching her walk into the adjoining bathroom.
"Guess who had to go pick him up afterward?" She leaned back and looked at him.
"You?"
"Yes, and let me tell you he wasn't happy about me being the one to pick him up. And it didn't help my case that I had my music up loud."
"You, my love are evil." He laughed as he started to pull off his shirt.
"Only on days that end in Y." She grinned before leaning back into the bathroom to wash her makeup off.
Since they had been together she had made leaps and bounds in her personality and had grown into a woman he wouldn't mind spending the rest of his life with her. He had Shay go out with him and design the perfect ring for her.
He just had to figure it all out. He had done the big proposal when he was going to marry Renee and he knew that Libby didn't care much for the big things, she was just happy to be with him.
His ears perked up hearing the familiar intro of Guns-N-Roses Paradise City playing. He sat down on the bed and could see her dancing in the bathroom pulling up her messy hair into a ponytail clad in one of his baggy Chicago Fire department shirts.
Feeling his eyes on her, she turned and looked at him.
"What?"
"Nothing." He answered as she came into the room carrying her phone with her. 'Mhmm." She said moving to straddle his lap
. "What is going on in that head of yours?"
"I have been thinking." He started moving his hands up her bare thighs.
 "About what?" She asked.
"About how much I want to marry you."
"Marry me?" She repeated looking at him surprised.
"Yes." He returned before reaching over and taking the small velvet box and handing it to her. "We are doing everything that involves being married why not just make it legal? What do you say? Want to become Libby Serveride?"
She looked thoughtful for a second before breaking out in a bright smile, "Yes!" She exclaimed causing him to laugh and sit up and kiss her. "I love you." She muttered against his lips.
"I love you too." He said as he rolled them over resting her on her back.
****
"Good morning Shay," Libby said coming down the stairs a little skip her step.
"What are you so happy about this morning?"
Instead of answering, she held up her hand and showed her, the shining engagement ring.
"Finally!" She exclaimed going over to her and hugging her.
"I have been waiting for him to ask you to marry him for weeks. Since he got that ring for you."
She nodded her head before she poured herself a cup of coffee. "I was going to ask you if you mind being my maid of honor. If you wouldn't encourage me I wouldn't have gotten together with him."
"Of course!" She said, "Does Gabby know?"
"Not yet. You are the first one to hear."
"Good. Hey, congrats there Kelly. Libby just told me." Kelly nodded his head before he went around the table and pressed a kiss to Libby's lips and took her coffee mug from her.
"You have to tell Cruz and Otis." Shay said. Libby turned to her fiancée who nodded his head in agreement. "I will call them."

2. Take My Hand, Take My Whole Life Too
On days when work hits a little too close to home, Matt and Hale take their time reminding Kelly of what waits on the other side of that dark tunnel. This morning is no different. Amid colorful protests, Matt finally coaxes Kelly down the hall to their bedroom for a much-needed shower and sends Hale with him. Today, he’d said, taking Shay from Hale’s arms, he needs you. He left her with a kiss to the side of her head, nodding down the hall.
Hale enters the room quietly, finding Kelly standing at the foot of the bed. Silently, she waits for him to allow her closer, and waits for signs of that shared desire for intimacy. Once she has it, she steps closer, her eyes lock on his and she begins to peel his clothes from his body, layer by layer, taking her time. Hale lifts Kelly’s t-shirt by the hem, gesturing with her chin for him to raise his arms, and with some help, pulls the fabric over his head. Her deft fingers make quick work of Kelly’s belt, the button and the zipper on the front of his jeans, and slide the denim material down his thighs.
Kelly has never been shy about his body, his confidence―though borderline cocky most days―is one of the things Hale adores the most about him. A tiny smirk pulls at the corner of his mouth as he watches Hale’s eyes follow the path of her hands down his bare torso, a kaleidoscope of colors swirling together in her irises. He relishes his partner’s attention, relaxing in the familiarity of it; his own hands at home on Hale’s hips.
He dips his head, warm breath fanning over her lips. His eyes sparkle with mischief, Hale chases his mouth. It’s a game he’s played since the night of their first date; close enough to suffocate her with his presence, with the stifling need to have him, yet far enough to linger just beyond her reach. And Hale Shay falls for it again, falls for him again, every single time.
“Kiss me,” he whispers after the thrill of teasing her has fizzled out to a dull roar.
As another of their unspoken rules, he and Matt never show public displays of affection at work; as it is, they shouldn’t be stationed at the same house, and waiting for reassignment has meant keeping their relationship strictly professional while on duty. Likewise, when Hale visits, none of them ever breaches that boundary.
“Hale. Kiss me,” he says again in a tone he reserves for moments such as this, and Hale does.
She knows at work, Matt and Kelly back each other up no matter the situation, steal glances across the field, and settle for reassuring pats on the back that can’t be misconstrued as anything other than two colleagues in unwavering support of one another. But at home, unrestrained by rules and regulations, they melt into each other with ease and show Hale that same level of devotion and wanting.
Kelly’s grip on Hale’s hips tightens, and he pulls her impossibly closer, unwilling to leave even the slightest bit of space between them. And Hale wraps Kelly up in her embrace, squeezing her arms around his shoulders when he asks for it. The room, the world beyond, begins to fade and they are all that is left. He smells like work; turnouts, the rig, fire and the faint scent of cigar smoke.
Their jobs are not easy, sometimes what they do is brutal and unforgiving. And on the days when it reminds Kelly of all they have sacrificed, all they have lost, Hale or Matt is there to remind him of everything they still have to live for―each other and baby Shay.
Hale removes her pajama pants and Matt’s shirt that she slept in, her undergarments follow, and she leads Kelly by the hand to their bathroom. He leaves behind his boxer beliefs as he follows. The hot water running in the shower cloaks the room in steam and engulfs Kelly in a relaxing fog; here he lets his guard down, and here he allows Hale to carry the weight for him. Though he won't talk about what happened until much later, he lets her take care of him.
It’s Kelly’s turn to pull Hale by the hand, tugging her gently behind him as he enters the tub. He positions her under the spray of water from the rain showerhead, whatever misses her lightly pelts warm droplets on his skin. His green eyes hold a tender adoration, roaming the length of her from head to toe. She is all he has left of the woman who made him who he is today, and he doesn't know how but he wonders if it's possible that Shay had nudged them together all along. That she made sure the two most important people in her life would have each other if anything happened to her. No matter how it happened, he is grateful that it did.
The sun broke through the clouds, beaming down on Marquette Park where the 2011 annual Friends of Firemen Barbecue is underway. Kelly followed Andy through the park to the section 51 had claimed as their own; Andy’s boys, Griffin and Ben, ran ahead of them. He transferred the extra bottles of beer and cans of pop he agreed to bring from their cases to the coolers.
Checking his watch, he scanned the park for Shay; she had insisted on meeting him there, had said something about bringing someone with her, and promised to save him a seat. He knew Squad would pull him to whatever table they secured at some point and as their lieutenant, he would be hard-pressed to say no. But he just needed to see Shay first, to calm his nerves and make sure she was okay. He spotted her, finally, next to a young woman he couldn’t recall ever meeting before.
Approaching the table, he greeted Dawson and the members of Truck, smiling when Shay caught his eyes. He noted that the woman beside her bore a striking resemblance to his best friend, though he was certain now that he’d never seen her. She looked up from her conversation with Dawson when Shay rose to round the table and pulled him into a hug; her hair was slightly darker than Shay’s, her eyes were a brilliant shade of hazel unlike Shay’s green, and the smile she gave him was utterly breathtaking.
“What took you so long?” Shay said, poking him lightly in the chest.
“Had a stop to make,” he said, chuckling.
Shay raised an eyebrow in disbelief but said nothing else about it. Instead, she pulled him toward the head of the table, near the girl he had trouble taking his eyes off of since he spotted her. “Hale, Kelly Severide. Kelly, my sister, Hale.”
“Sister?” He balked, surprise evident in his tone. His eyes darted back and forth between them. “Hang on, I thought―”
“I have two sisters, Kelly. Some people do have more than one sibling, you know?”
“Right. Yeah. No, I know. You’ve just never mentioned her.”
“Happens a lot, actually. That’s because Megan’s the favorite sister,” Hale answered with a smile that made Kelly’s heart flutter.
“Megan meddles more,” Shay corrected.
“Sorry,” he said. “Nice to meet you.” He smiled, shaking her hand.
“Yeah, you too. Shay talks about you all the time.”
“Shay?” he repeated, bewildered. He couldn’t remember the last time he heard a civilian call Shay by her last name, even stranger is that it had come from her sister. The melody of laughter that spilled from Hale’s lips at the look on Kelly’s face punched through his stomach; she was beautiful in a way he couldn’t describe, and his brain refused to form the words.
Hale’s amusement sobered when her sister’s elbow found that space under her ribs. She glared playfully at her before returning her attention to Kelly. “I was a combat medic for almost 10 years, calling her Shay instead of Leslie just came naturally to me. I guess that’s one thing I haven’t quite figured out how to grasp about civilian life yet.”
“She was always just Hale to me,” Shay said, her face wreathed in a beaming smile. Kelly heard the pride in her voice and tucked it away.
“Thank you for your service. So, 10 years as a combat medic; what are you doing these days?”
“I’m actually not sure yet. Got back a few months ago, honorable discharge. The transition has been rough, and I haven’t found anything that satisfies my desire to help people.”
“You will.”
“Do not flirt with my sister, Severide,” Shay scolded, punching him in the shoulder.
Kelly pulls himself from his thoughts, opening his eyes to find Hale standing before him, waiting. He smiles and it’s soft and kind and exactly how he looked at her when they met, when she told him they were having a baby, when their baby was born, and when he knew he wanted to name her after Shay. Lifting a hand to the side of her face, he gently cradles her cheek, stroking the soft skin with the pad of his calloused thumb. He can’t help himself, he drinks in all she is and all he remembers her to be.
“Kel? Did I lose you?” Her voice is soft, soothing. “What are you thinking about?” She reaches up with her right hand, settling her palm against his temple, her thumb ghosts over his forehead, smoothing out the lines between his eyebrows. “Talk to me, hmm?”
Kelly leans his head into the warmth of Hale’s hand, he closes his eyes as her finger continues to stroke a soft path along his browline. He takes a breath in and on the satisfied exhale, he says, “No, baby, you didn’t lose me. I’m still here. I, uh, I was just remembering the day we met, at the barbecue.”
A sweet hum emanates from Hale’s lips and her forehead finds the strong, hard muscles of Kelly’s chest. His heartbeat tattoos itself against the softness of her cheek, his other hand still protectively around the other side of her face. Hale’s sudden shyness fills Kelly with a strange feeling that blooms warmly in the spot where his heart should be. He realizes, while holding her to him, that it’s love: pure, sweet, beautiful love. A feeling similar to the one he felt when she looked at him for the first time.
“Shay was so annoying that day,” she says, voice muffled in his pectoral. She places a kiss there and lays her cheek against his sternum. “She was always so weird about you, and I never understood why.”
“She loved you,” he replies, running his fingers through her hair and along the base of her skull. “She was protecting you. And me, I think.”
“Hmm...wish she wouldn’t.”
“Nah, don’t say that. You wouldn’t have liked me much back then; not how I wanted you to, not with the way I was. Shay knew what she was doing.”
“Right. So, my sister played the long game for you.”
“Hey, no! No! On my behalf.”
Hale giggles, wrapping her arms around his torso and squeezing playfully.
“I was...an asshole when I met you. She didn’t want me getting too close, she didn’t want you getting hurt. Shay knew who I really was then; she’s the reason I changed, became a better man.”
“You have always been a good man, Kelly Severide.” Hale presses another kiss to his sternum, and more after that across his chest. She shifts up onto her toes and presses their lips together. Her kiss is different this time; slower, softer, but filled with every ounce of love and passion that resides bone-deep within her. Kelly chases after the high her attention brings, Hale gives it to him willingly.
“I thought I found Shay on a call this morning,” Kelly says, pulling back and resting his forehead against hers. Hale frowns and then it clicks that he’s talking about their daughter. “A little boy and his mother were trapped in their apartment. I could hear him crying when Mills and I were searching for survivors. She had placed him in the bathtub when the commotion started, by the time she realized it was a fire and they needed to get out, she had already inhaled too much smoke and couldn’t make her way back for him. We got them out before the building came down, they’re both recovering at Med. Will says they’re going to be fine, better than. But I-I― I couldn’t get the image of you and Shay out of my head. I just...” His voice trails off and he takes a shuddering breath in, his throat is tight against the memories assaulting his mind, fear squeezes his heart in an iron grip.
Choking sobs fill the air, pinging off the tiles around them. Hale’s arms tighten around his torso, and she lets him cry. Between his memories of Shay and the call at work, his meter for emotional control is lower than Hale is used to seeing. Exhaustion weighs him down, she does her best to hold him up.
Hale rubs her fingertips through the hair on the back of his head, massaging his scalp as she does. The best way to help him relax is to tell him about what they’ve done in his absence. “Shay is okay, Kelly. She slept most of the time, on her own schedule. She’s been a little fussier than usual, I think she misses you and Matt. I know I do.
“Christian helped so much while you both were on shift, I want to do something nice for him to say thank you. This morning Shay woke up at 2 and has been vocal about her disdain for you being gone ever since. She is still just as strong and healthy as she was when you saw her two days ago, and I’m sure she’ll be even stronger than that any day now.”
Kelly nods his head where it lays on her shoulder, tucking his face into her neck, breathing her in. His body stops shaking as his tears subside; he can breathe again.
She turns her face to kiss under his jaw. She presses her left hand in the middle of his back, molding their bodies together, letting the curves of her chest, her waist, her thighs press into him. “I am still here, my love. I’m right here and I’m not going anywhere. You have me, Kel, as long as you want me.”
He snakes his arms around her lower back, pulling her flush to his chest. “Until the stars go out,” he says quietly.
“Until the sun dies,” she promises back.
They stay there under the water for what feels like an eternity, soaking in the safety of being in each other’s arms. Then Hale mutely persuades Kelly to let her ease the burden. With a little convincing in the form of a few more soft kisses placed along his jaw and his right shoulder, she turns them around and pushes him back under the water. She grabs the bar of Irish Spring soap and lathers it up along his body from his neck down, working her fingers into his tense muscles. The familiar scent of eucalyptus and mint alleviates his stress and lifts the haze of fog that had been clouding Kelly’s mind since he’d returned to the station. Next, she’s squirting a generous amount of shampoo into her hand and working it through his hair and scalp. And here in their bathroom with the mother of his little girl, the woman he fell in love with the moment he saw her, he finally finds peace.

Baba - Brian 'Otis' Zvonecek
Request: She meets her boyfriend’s family for the first time after dating for six months. Brian Zvonecek x fem pretty pls nobody writes for him anymore 😔
Summary: reader prepares to meet Otis' baba for the first time.
A/N: Thought about making this like...reader meeting 51 for the first time cause...family...but I feel like that's been done. And this isn't actually like meeting baba it's just, the frantic feelings of inadequacy beforehand.
One Chicago Masterlist
✰✰✰✰
Despite all efforts on your behalf to 'play it cool', you'd been internally freaking out about today since Otis mentioned it, casually, over breakfast before a shift, as if meeting the matriarch of his family was no big deal at all.
"Baba doesn't even speak English," Otis said, reminding you for what was possibly the seventeenth time in an hour that his grandmother wouldn't even know what you were saying when she eventually met you, "you could drop the f-bomb and she'd have no idea."
"Did you just say f-bomb Brian?" You laughed, turning away from your closet to actually look at your boyfriend. "You know you're like, a grown adult who can curse, who I've heard curse, right?"
He stuck his tongue out at you once your back was to him again. He knew you had been nervous about today, and not just because you had made a point of telling him how nervous you were. He'd been filled to the brim with anxiety the first time he met your parents, separately because they were divorced. Despite your dad being the more awkward and uncomfortable of the two dinners, something you had prepared him for, as much as someone could possibly be prepared for, he'd been more nervous about your mom. So, he understood why you were so worried, you wanted to make a good impression on someone who was important to him. It'd been that way the first time you met 51.
"Hey," Otis mentioned, having just thought about it and figuring it was worth mentioning, "you've met all of 51 and they love you. Even Herrmann's kids like you."
"Yeah but that's different," you sighed, finally settling on a shirt and pulling it over your head. You were going with Otis to pick his baba up at the airport and then go to dinner. There was a Russian rrestaurant down the street from your work and she'd mentioned wanting to try it out when she came to town. Apparently she wanted to test 'how these Americans do with home cooking' or however she said it to Otis in Russian. He'd suggested stopping at the apartment to drop off her belongings before dinner but she insisted they could go right out. "51 didn't move into our apartment afterward."
"I know it'll be an adjustment-"
"Yeah, and if she hates me the adjustment will be me, finding a new apartment," you replied.
"She's not gonna hate you!" Otis insisted, "besides, she loves everyone...pretty much."
"Promising Bri," you huffed.
Otis grabbed your phone off the nightstand and held it out to you, "look, it's not like I haven't talked about you before...I mean it's been six months."
"Doesn't mean she'll like me!" You grabbed your phone and stuffed it in your pocket before heading out of the bedroom, Otis following after you.
Joe was watching tv in the living room and he looked up when the two of you entered the room. "Ooo, is this the official 'baba meeting outfit'?" He teased.
You nodded, gesturing to your clothing, "what do you think?" You had tried to dress conservatively, neutral colors and nothing she might find inappropriate.
"You look great, baba will love you." Otis stressed, grabbing your hips from behind and pushing you toward the door.
"And when she doesn't?"
"She will!" Joe called from the couch, giving you a double thumbs up.
You didn't get an opportunity to answer because Otis had pushed you out the door and pulled it shut behind you after grabbing your sneakers. He pushed them into your hands and pointed to your feet, "put on your shoes, let's go."
"These are totally reasonable concerns Brian," you complained, pulling your shoes on and following him to the stairs.
"I know, I know. I was totally freaked out when I met your parents and, hey, it went great...with your mom. Baba will love you, I know she will. I get that its a big ask, having her move in-"
"I don't care about that. I mean obviously, I want her to have the best care possible and if that means moving in, I'm on board. I just mean...that's not the issue. I don't want her to move in and think I'm annoying or pushy or whatever and tell you I'm a bad fit and then you think maybe she's right and then we break up-"
"Whoa, hey...none of that is going to happen," Otis promised, grabbing your upper arms to stop you from walking toward the front door of the apartment building. He gave a gentle squeeze to reassure you, "Baba has practically already met you, I talk about you all the time. She's not going to hate you, I wouldn't have proposed this if I thought she would hate you or that you wouldn't be onboard. It'll be okay, okay?"
"Yeah, okay. Okay." You nodded.
Otis let go of you, giving your arms one more squeeze before he did, "ready to go?"
"Ready as I'll ever be." You agreed, though if you were being honest you were feeling remarkably better than you had been only moments earlier. You knew Otis was right, he'd never make you uncomfortable and, knowing him, he'd probably talked you up to his baba so much that she recite back your coffee order.  When you'd met 51 for the first time, Sylvie had even given you some contraband Starbucks pumpkin spice sauce that she found on eBay as a 'welcome to the family' gift. Though, you knew you bragged about Otis to your family just as heavily, if not more. While there was probably nothing that could truly prepare you for meeting his baba, Otis had done a good job of getting you out of your head.

Touchy - Matthew Casey Imagine (Chicago Fire)
Tumblr media
Title: Touchy
Pairing: Matthew Casey X Reader
Word Count: 983 words
Warning(s): none that I can think of
Summary: Matthew and (Y/n) have a conversation about an interesting pattern that he's noticed.
Author's Note: And look at that... yet another self-comfort fic. I am craving physical affection.
-----------------------------
I hadn't noticed it was a pattern.
I knew that I had always leaned towards the touchier side of affection. It wasn't shocking that my love language was physical touch.
I tended to always be holding Matthew's hand or leaning on his side. I liked hugging him and kissing his cheek. Do not get me started on cuddling. I would never stop talking about it.
Being affectionate like that felt natural.
I tried to avoid doing any of that at work. Not only for Matthew's sake but for everyone else's. It was a workplace. I was okay with keeping my hands to myself on shift.
However, that meant when I got home, I felt free to hug and kiss Matthew as much as he let me.
I was under the impression that he like how I would immediately hug him when both got through the door and how I refused to cook- or let him cook- alone because I wanted to hold him or be held and how when we sat down on the couch to relax, I always ended up with my legs in his lap, my arms around him, and my head on his shoulder.
Again, I didn't really notice that it was a major pattern.
I was under that impression until Matthew said something.
"Can I ask you something," he leaned on the counter while I closed the oven door and set the timer.
"Sure," I nodded. "What's up?"
He let out a breath, trying to figure out how to word what he was going to say, "Why do you touch me so much?"
"I'm sorry," I asked.
"You hug me the minute we're inside, we are holding hands all the time, I don't think either one of us has cooked alone since you moved in, you almost lay completely on top of me at night," he listed. "I'm just... I'm wondering why."
I paused. I never thought about it in a lot of detail.
"Umm," I furrowed my eyes and looked down at the countertop. I finally looked back at him. "I... I've never thought about it."
"Really?"
I shrugged, "Not... not really. I mean... I guess I just like it."
There was a small pause between us as I thought about it.
"I mean... my parents weren't really super... touchy," I continued, feeling a need to explain the thought process. "I guess I just really wanted that physical affection... now that I'm in a relationship... a good relationship... I can be that way."
He nodded.
He leaned over and kissed the side of my head, wrapping his arms around me.
"I was just curious; I wasn't trying to pry."
I nodded and turned in his arms. I hugged him back and hid my face in the crook of his neck.
I thought about that question all night. I was worried that I had read the situation wrong. Maybe he didn't want me to be like that. Maybe that was his way of telling me. I didn't want to make him unhappy.
I tried to test the waters for the rest of the night. After dinner, I didn't do my normal curling-into-Matthew's-side thing. I just held his hand and leaned my head on his shoulder. When we went to bed, I tried to stay off to the side for the most part.
I couldn't tell if he liked it more or not. I just felt like it was the right thing to do at the time.
I just didn't want to overstep any more than I already had.
--next day--
I had tried to shrug off the events of last night while on the way to work.
I mostly managed to do that. Still, it always poked at the back of my mind. It was weird to think about changing my dynamic with Matthew, but I would if he was happier that way.
I was in the main breakroom with pretty much everyone else. Sylvie and I were by the counter, talking about something over a cup of coffee when I saw Matthew walk in.
I grinned at him, waving. I thought he was just walking through.
"Hey," he said, walking over to me.
I was caught off-guard when he grabbed my waist and kissed me in the middle of the room. I didn't get a chance to react when he leaned back. He kissed my forehead and nudged my nose lightly with his before stepping back and leaving the room.
I looked at Sylvie as he walked out. We both looked equally shocked. She knew that Matthew and I had a work boundary.
"Damn, that was new," I looked over when I heard Kelly speak up. I saw that everyone was watching me.
"Go," Sylvie told me, taking the cup from my hand.
I nodded and walked out of the room quickly.
"Hey," I said as I walked over to Matthew. I grabbed his hand and walked off to the side. "What was that?"
"What," he asked, playing dumb.
"You're kidding, right," I replied. "The kiss and the nose nudge?"
He grinned, looking down for a moment.
"So?"
"I... I felt like a dick after last night," he explained. "I immediately noticed you pulling away and I felt like shit for that. I don't want you to believe that I don't love our normal. I was... I was trying to show that I like your need for physical affection. It's adorable and I don't want you to stop doing it because I was an asshole."
I just kind of looked at him.
"Please just go back to being super affectionate and cuddly," he begged, pulling me into his arms. "Please."
I nodded, "I can arrange that."
He chuckled, "Good... because I was going to be a mess if you said no."
I chuckled.
"Don't judge me," he muttered, kissing my head. "I love you."
"I love you too."

Family means family
Tumblr media
Summary - After Stella dies on a call, Kelly locks himself away and refuses to see anyone including his daughter. There was only person who could pull Kelly out of the spiral he was in, yet he was 2000 miles away. But a single phone call from the last person Matt Casey expected to hear from changes that.
Warnings - Major Character Death
Notes - this is a prequel to Memories Bring Back You. That fic goes against my own long held headcannon that Severide is the most likely character to die from a broken heart so it was interesting to delve into a situation where he can’t do that and how that would impact him. This came out with a lot more Brettsey in than I had originally planned but I’m not mad about it! You don’t have to have read MBBY for this to make sense, they are standalone. Hope you enjoy! AO3 Link
Matt Casey finally had a second to sit down after an incredibly busy shift. When he hadn’t been on a call, he was busy running drills trying to get a couple of new firefighters on his rig up to scratch. They weren’t quite the same as his Truck crew back in Chicago but he was determined to make them as good as they could possibly be. He did enjoy seeing them grow and develop but he was still tired and was looking forward to a quick lie down, if the bells would allow it.
It wasn’t the bells that hindered his sleep however, it was his phone ringing and a glance down at the screen showed it was possibly the last person he had expected to see calling him.
He swiped his thumb across the screen to answer the call.
‘Hey,’ he said, unsure what tone he should be taking.
‘Hey Matt, I’m sorry to call but…’ Sylvie’s voice tailed off. It was quieter and shakier than he remembered. He knew her well enough to understand that this was not going to be a catch up call.
‘No, it’s okay, what’s up?’ He asked, his uncertainty turning to concern.
‘It’s not me, it’s Stella,’ he heard her sniff as she stifled a small sob. Matt sat up straighter.
‘What happened?’ He asked quietly, a lump growing in his throat knowing this couldn’t be anything good. He had spoken to Stella just last week. Lizzie had wanted to show him a painting she had done of him and Kelly, so Stella had video called him. She had seemed fine then. That meant that something must have happened on a call.
‘There was an accident’, Sylvie took a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself but it came out shaky. ‘She didn’t make it out of a storage unit fire…’
Matt’s head dropped to his hands, it felt like a piece of his heart had been chipped off at his her words. He had known Stella for years, lived with her for a few. Watched her develop into the most incredible firefighter and leader. Been an incredible wife to his best friend and seen her become the most wonderful mother to Lizzie. That she had been taken from her family, both the one with her husband and daughter and the one at the firehouse. It wasn’t fair.
‘Kelly needs you Matt, I don’t want to ask or tell you what to do-’
‘No, I’m on the first flight.’ He interrupted with a small shake of his head. It was his best friend. There was nothing to keep him from Chicago at this point. ‘Thanks for calling Sylvie,’ he said softly, knowing it would have been hard for her to pick up the phone to call anyone and tell them about Stella, let alone call him.
‘They’re our family,’ she said quietly.
‘How are you doing?’ He asked, knowing that Sylvie always put everyone else's needs above her own and he doubted this time would be any different.
‘I.. I haven’t processed it yet. I don’t think any of us have. Just trying to hold it together for Severide’, she sniffed. ‘He’s in a bad way Matt’.
‘I wish I could say I would expect something else but he loves her with everything he has. Has he told Lizzie?’
‘That’s part of the problem. He hasn’t seen her since it happened yesterday. Sorry I didn’t ca-’
‘No no, it’s fine. I get it Sylvie, I do. Where is she then?’ He asked, knowing his best friend must be in an awful place if he was refusing to see his daughter.
‘She’s with Cindy and Hermann, she just thinks they are both working late I think. I’ll explain everything else when you get here. Let me know which flight you get on and I’ll pick you up.’
‘Okay. And thank you Sylvie, I’m glad it was you that called,’ he smiled softly, allowing himself a moment of comfort.
‘Of course, I’ll see you soon Matt’. And with that the call ended. And Matt was sitting alone in his office with the knowledge that one of his closest friends was no longer with them and his best friend was in agonising pain and he was almost 2000 miles away.
—————————————————————————
His chief had granted him the furlough immediately, no questions asked. He hadn’t even gone back home, just grabbed his station bag which had a couple of changes of clothes in it and headed straight to the airport. He had enough friends in Chicago that someone could lend him some clothes if needed. He didn’t want to waste any time.
Matt didn’t know what he would find when he touched down in Chicago but if Sylvie had called him, he knew it wouldn’t be anything good. Kelly had suffered loss before, more loss than one person should experience in their life and to have his wife taken away from him and leave him as a single parent, it was just cruel.
When Kelly had taken the OFI position after Stella had given birth, Matt wasn’t even a little bit surprised. He knew how much he loved his wife and Stella was just at the beginning of her career. She still had so much to give to the CFD. Severide had always been exceptional at arson investigation and if it meant he could be at home for his daughter then it made perfect sense.
However Matt knew his best friend, had known him and worked alongside him for years, so he knew that somewhere inside he would be questioning if he had been on the call if he could have helped, or even saved her. Without knowing the exact details of the call Matt couldn’t give a definitive answer but knew that if Kelly had been there, the likeness was that Lizzie would have lost both of her parents that day and Matt would be flying back to his home city for an even more heartbreaking reason.
Before he got on the flight, he dropped Sylvie a message to let her know when he was due to land, with a caveat to say she didn’t need to pick him up and he could get an Uber. He knew that she would be waiting for him at the arrivals gate though. He had also sent a message to Boden, Cruz, Hermann and Mouch to let them all know he was on his way back and that Sylvie had filled him in. He wished he was heading back to see his friends for a more positive reason but some small part of him was glad he would be around people experiencing the same grief he was. If he had had to go through losing Stella alone in Oregon, well, he’s not sure he could have.
—————————————————————————
As he had expected, Sylvie was waiting for him when he got through the arrivals gate. He could feel the nerves and the sense of uneasiness coming off of her as soon as he spotted where she was standing. She was tugging her sleeves over her hands, glancing around and nibbling her bottom lip. He hadn’t seen her since the morning after Kelly and Stella’s wedding, they had said goodbye at her apartment door as she had to go to shift and he had a flight to catch. They hadn’t spoken aloud the thought they were both sharing, that it might be the final time to see each other. They just held each other closely.
He walked over to her and before saying anything wrapped her tightly in his arms. He knew it had been the right decision when he felt her stiffness disappear and she melted into his embrace. He didn’t loosen his hold when he felt her shake and her tears wet his neck, he just let her cry in his arms. He felt the tears begin to spill from his own eyes but didn’t care enough to wipe them away. They were both sad, a horrible thing had happened and crying was a natural response, what onlookers thought didn’t matter right now.
‘Hi,’ he said softly when she eventually pulled back. He reached to wipe a stray tear from her cheek, not questioning how easy it was to fall back into simple physical contact with her.
‘Hi,’ she echoed. ‘That all you bring?’ she asked, nodding to the bag which was slung over his shoulder.
‘Yep, came straight from the firehouse, figured I could borrow some clothes off people if I need to’, he said as the pair started to walk towards the exit.
‘I still have a few of your things,’ Sylvie said quietly, a hint of embarrassment laced through her voice.
‘Then that’s perfect’, he said, smiling to dissuade her of those feelings. He still had a couple of her shirts in the back of his closet too. Getting rid of them had always felt too final. ‘Is Severide at the loft?’ He asked.
‘We think so’, she answered. ‘We haven’t seen him since the hospital. But that must have been where he went.’
‘Okay, so first stop is there? Then go see Lizzie?’ Sylvie nodded in agreement. First thing first, he had to see if he could coax his oldest friend out to see his one and only daughter, Matt knew it would be a challenge but knew he needed to succeed. For Kelly’s own sake.
—————————————————————————
The drive to the loft was bizarre. The air was thick with everything they weren’t saying. Matt was fighting the urge to reach across the centre console to hold Sylvie’s hand or rest his hand on her leg like they used to. What had brought them back together was something so tragic but the fact it could have been anyone who came to pick him up brought him an ounce of hope. Maybe it was wrong to feel this way considering where they were driving and what would be waiting for him but in the same breath he knew that Stella would want everyone to be happy.
When they pulled up to the loft, it was eerily quiet.
‘I’ll wait in the car for you. If you can get him out then I’ll drive you both to Hermann’s, I don’t imagine he’s in a fit state to drive,’ Sylvie said as she put her car in park.
‘Okay, I’ll leave you with my bag?’ he asked as he got out of the car, Sylvie nodded.
The walk up to the loft was bizarre, almost a sense of deja vu took over him, having walked this route for many years but not being back to visit in some time. Although he knew there was likely to be a spare key above the door frame, now was not quite the time to invade his friend's privacy. He would wait to see if he would be invited in, so knocked the door loudly and waited.
He couldn’t hear any movement inside but Kelly’s Mustang and Stella’s Jeep had been outside, along with his bike so Matt knew he was inside.
‘Kelly, it’s Matt, you going to let me in?’ He said loudly after a couple of moments, accompanying it with another loud knock. ‘I’m so sorry about Stella, Sylvie told me. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. Open up and we can talk about it?’ When he still received no response, he tried another tack. ‘Sylvie and I were going to go and see Lizzie, I’m sure she’d like to see her dad? You could come with us?’
After another few moments of silence, Matt decided today was clearly not the day. Grief worked in funny ways and if Severide needed another day of solitude then Matt was going to be the one to grant that.
‘I’m going to go now Kelly but if you need me I’m at the other end of the phone. I’ll give Lizzie your love and I’ll be back tomorrow. And I really am sorry mate’. He hung his head and rested his palm against the door, hoping for a moment that Kelly would open the door but when that didn’t occur, he turned around and walked back to the car and to Sylvie.
‘You tried’, Sylvie said solemnly when he climbed back into her car.
‘I guess, let’s go see Lizzie and we can try again later’, Matt said. He hadn’t seen Lizzie in person since she was a baby, when Stella and Kelly had surprised him with a visit, although he spoke on the phone with her a lot so he was excited to see her. A pang deep in his chest reminded him that she didn’t know her mother had died and her father had locked himself away from the world. Maybe that was best, he thought, to give her another day before her life was irrevocably changed forever.
—————————————————————————
When Matt knocked on the door to the Hermann residence, with Sylvie behind him, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to keep it together in front of the little girl but knew he had to.
Hermann opened the door and immediately pulled him into a hug. The older firefighter was not usually one to initiate physical contact but Matt held him tightly anyway.
‘Good to see you man’ he said when he finally pulled back. ‘Did you see him?’
Matt shook his head dejectedly, ‘wouldn’t open the door’.
‘Same for all of us. Come on in then, the little one is in the garden playing.’ He stood back to let them in, ‘hey there Brett’, he added when Sylvie passed him with a sad smile.
The house was devoid of its usual hubbub. There had always been kids running around, the smell of something delightful coming from the kitchen, but today it was void of all of that as they walked through to the backyard.
Lizzie Severide was sitting on the swing set, kicking her feet against the dirt but not attempting to swing any further than the couple of inches it was moving as a result of her motions. When the door opened and Casey and Syvlie stepped out, her head shot up and a sudden look of disappointment flickered across her young face when the people at the door were not the ones she was clearly waiting for. The excitement when she realised who it was took over quickly however and she squealed with excitement before jumping off the swing and running towards the pair, throwing herself at Matt’s legs.
‘Uncle Matt!’ she said excitedly as he knelt down and pulled her into a tight hug.
‘Hey kiddo,’ he said as he kept the little girl cradled against his chest, trying to pour all the love he had for her into it. ‘How are you?’ he said as he pulled back slightly, keeping his hands on the tops of her arms, squeezing lightly.
‘Good. Cindy made brownies,’ she said excitedly, tugging at the bottom of her shirt and bouncing from foot to foot. ‘But Mommy and Daddy are working,’ she said, pushing her bottom lip out. The pout he was sure could get his best friend to do anything his daughter asked.
‘They are, they have important jobs. But I know they love you lots and lots,’ Matt said and pulled a smile onto his face, shielding the pain.
‘I know,’ Lizzie said with a smile, clearly it was something her parents told her a lot. Good, Matt thought, she should be told it as often as possible.
‘Did you see who I brought with me?’ Matt asked, nodding his head up at Sylvie. Lizzie’s head spun around quickly to look where he was nodding, the smile widened on her face as she realised who had come to visit with her favourite Uncle.
‘Auntie Betty!’ Matt had to stifle a laugh at this and shot Syvlie a questioning look.
‘People were calling me both Sylvie and Brett and somehow Auntie Betty was born,’ she chuckled lightly.
‘I like it,’ Matt said with a wink.
‘Only I call Auntie Betty!’ Lizzie said firmly, the little girl clearly had her mothers fire within her.
‘Of course, only you get to call me Auntie Betty,’ Sylvie smiled and ran her hand over the girl's head, her curls were attempting to be restrained with some tight dutch braids but a few flyways were escaping.
‘Uncle Matt’, Lizzie said, turning back to Casey, an inquisitive look in her eyes.
‘Yes Lizzie’, he said, dreading the question that was coming next.
‘When Mommy and Daddy coming home?’ She looked down at the floor sadly. This had clearly been a question she had asked numerous times since she had arrived at the Hermann’s.
Sylvie had explained on the drive to the loft earlier what had happened. Kelly had brought Lizzie to the firehouse to celebrate her birthday and surprise Stella, that’s when the call to the storage facility came in. Kelly and Lizzie had stayed at the firehouse, assuming the call wouldn’t take too long and they could continue the birthday celebrations afterwards. When the worst had happened, Boden had called Kelly immediately knowing he would want, more accurately, would need to be there. Kelly left Lizzie at the firehouse with Stephanie, Kylie’s replacement, and Cindy had picked her up from there. Lizzie hadn’t seen her father since.
Kelly had pulled up to the scene and it had been worse than anyone had imagined. Cruz and Boden had to physically restrain him to stop him running into the building that was still burning. Sylvie’s eyes had filled with tears when she had been telling Matt how Kelly hadn’t stopped calling Stella’s name, his voice getting more hoarse with each yell.
When she had been brought out by the Truck crew, Kelly had attempted to resuscitate her himself, yelling at everyone that he could help her, he could bring her back. The rest of them had looked on in desperation, no one knowing when they should pull him back.
Finally, Boden had pulled him back. He had fallen to his knees and hadn’t said anything else. The tears stopped and he just watched them load her into the ambulance. Sylvie described it as seeing his soul disappear, it was like it was just Kelly’s body, he wasn’t in there anymore, his eyes had grown empty and he hadn’t said anything else.
Cindy and Hermann had expected Kelly to come and pick Lizzie up after leaving Med but he hadn’t shown. They had tried calling, Sylvie and Joe had gone round to the loft but there had been no answer. They hadn’t seen or heard from him since.
‘As soon as they can sweetie,’ Matt said, hoping the small white lie wouldn’t come back to haunt him. ‘How about we go inside and have one of those yummy brownies and you can tell me everything you’ve been up to since I’ve seen you last?’
Lizzie took a moment to contemplate before she nodded with a smile and tugged on Matt’s hand, pulling him towards the kitchen.
——————————————————————————
‘Can you drop me off at the loft?’ Matt asked as the pair got back into the car having spent the last couple of hours hearing all about what Lizzie had been drawing or making or eating. Once you got the little girl talking, there’s no way to stop her. It was refreshing, Matt had thought, she was such a happy child, he really hoped she’d be able to keep that spark even when the awful news was broken to her.
‘Are you going to try and talk to him again?’ Sylvie asked curiously.
‘Figured I’d fill him in on how Lizzie is doing and hope that works, then I’ll kip on the couch’.
‘And if it doesn’t, you plan on sleeping in the hallway?’ She chuckled.
Matt ran his hand over his chin, his 5 o’clock shadow firmly adorning his cheeks. ‘Guess I hadn’t really thought that far’, he admitted bashfully.
‘Okay, well if you can’t get through to him, I’ll wait downstairs and you can crash with me,’ Matt’s head swivelled quickly towards her, ‘I have a perfectly good couch Matt, you know that.’
‘Guess I do’, he smiled. ‘Thanks Sylvie, that sounds like a plan’.
‘I’ll give you 20 minutes, if I don’t hear from you then I’ll assume you’re staying with Severide, okay?’ Matt nodded in agreement as they continued their way towards the loft.
The climb up to the loft felt less unusual this time, but Matt had less hope that his friend would open the door than he had had previously. He knew Kelly well enough to know that he would have gone completely into his shell and it would take a lot to get him out of it.
He had debated bringing Lizzie back with him, knowing that Severide would have to open the door to his daughter. But having no idea what state Kelly was in on the other side of the door, he didn’t want to subject Lizzie to that. He would give Kelly one more chance to let him in of his own volition before he resorted to more drastic methods.
He knocked the door slightly harder than he had done when he had been here a few hours ago, thinking maybe it was just that he had been in his bedroom and couldn’t hear him knocking.
‘Sev, hey. It’s me again. I’ve just come from seeing Lizzie. She misses you man, is asking about you and Stella. I just told her that you both loved her.’ Matt took a deep breath before continuing. ‘It can’t come from anyone else but you Kelly, and I know that’s awful and painful, but it has to. She can’t hear this when she hasn’t got you there to turn to. You’re all she’s got. She needs you.’
‘She’s grown so much man, and she’s the spitting image of Stella. She’s so smart too, took great pride in telling me all the things Hermann does wrong around the house that Cindy has to correct him. You must be so proud of her.’
‘I’m going to go now, give you a little bit more time. But I’ll be back first thing tomorrow. And Sev, I’m coming in whether you like it or not. And I really would prefer if you opened the door for me, don’t want to screw my shoulder up again by barging it down. But I will.’
As he turned to leave, he stopped and approached the door again.
‘We are all here for you. We love you, we love Stella and we love Lizzie. You’re not going through this alone man.’
—————————————————————————
‘Thanks for letting me stay Sylvie’, Matt said as he finished his takeout. They had ordered Chinese when they got back to her place, neither being in the mood to cook. Placing the empty container on the coffee table and he relaxed into the back of the couch.
It was odd being back here in her apartment. They had spent the majority of their time here when they were together. He had begun to think of it as much more of their apartment with the amount of time he spent there, sleeping in her bed more often than he slept in his own.
This is the place where they had spent their first night together, but he also knew this was the place where he had broken her heart, telling her he was leaving and going to Oregon. He knew he had had his reasons, knew that Sylvie understood them, but he still wished that they had stayed the course. He missed her, had spent a long time missing her before realising that it was futile. Until the thing keeping them apart stopped being an issue, then they would continue to stay apart.
It had stopped being an issue in the last couple of months, but Matt had still not made the final decision to come back to home. He did genuinely love his job in Oregon, fighting forest fires was something completely different and refreshing. He had spent a long time working with his crew to bring them up to the level he expected. But without the boys, there was nothing keeping him in Portland anymore.
He had contemplated coming back so often. Of calling up Boden and seeing if he could return, the likelihood of coming back to 51 was slim, he knew that, all the leadership positions had been filled. But even if he was back here, he would be around his family again.
Griffin had been accepted into the CFD and was now working as a candidate at a house across the city, although Matt knew his dream was to work on 81, the same truck as his father.
Ben was studying Maths over on the East Coast. He didn’t have the same pull back to Chicago as Griffin did but also had no inclination of staying in Portland. When he had applied to colleges on the East Coast and got accepted to a small school, he was incredibly excited and Matt was equally as proud of him.
He would be lying if he had said that Sylvie wasn’t a factor in his decision either. Both for the want to come back and the uncertainty about it. He didn’t expect them to be able to immediately fall back into what they had before, but at least without the physical distance between them, it could actually be a possibility again.
‘It’s no problem’, Sylvie said with the soft smile that Matt had been so fond of. It was different to the smile that Syvlie used the majority of the time, the one she dolled out to patients as easily as breathing. This was the smile she shared only with those she cared deeply about, the ones that she had let into her life and through her defences. Matt was grateful that he could still be included in that group. ‘You sure you’ll be okay out here?’ She brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear. ‘We’ve shared a bed before, I don’t mind,’ she said softly.
Matt smiled warmly but shook his head. ‘It’s alright, I’ve stayed out here before. It’s perfectly comfortable. I don’t think either of us are in an emotionally stable state to be sharing a bed again, not yet,’ he added with a glance up at Sylvie and clocked how a blush started to spread across her cheeks. ‘But I’m here if you need me’, he said and she nodded in response.
‘Probably a smart idea,’ Sylvie said with a smile that didn’t quite meet her eyes. ‘I’ll get you some blankets then.’ She retrieved them, placed them on the coffee table and then smiled before retreating to her bedroom, leaving Matt standing alone in the living room wondering if he had just made the wrong choice.
At some point in the night however, he felt a small hand on his shoulder and awoke to see Sylvie standing over him, her eyes rimmed with red. He sat up quickly and she reached out a hand to him, he hesitated slightly before placing his hand in hers. She tugged him wordlessly towards her bedroom and he went willingly, following her without question.
She climbed into the bed, the side she had always slept on and held up the covers for him to slide under as well. When he had made himself comfortable, she curled herself into his chest, her body warm against his. He wrapped his arms around her in a familiar motion, allowing himself a moment to breathe in her usual vanilla shampoo scented hair. The pair fell asleep, awash in the comfort that being in each other's presence and arms provided and when they awoke in the morning they didn’t question it, they simply just smiled.
—————————————————————————
Sylvie was on the shift that day so Matt drove her to work and then headed straight over to the loft in her car. He wasn’t taking no for an answer today, he needed to see his friend and he needed Kelly to agree to go see his daughter. Keeping Lizzie in the dark any longer than necessary wasn’t the right thing to do but at the same time, the news had to come from Kelly.
Approaching the front door, he stretched out his shoulders. Matt hadn’t been kidding when he said he’d break down the door if he needed to. Feeling like he should probably give his friend a warning, he knocked on the door and announced his presence.
As with the previous times he had stood in this spot, there was no answer. So Matt took a couple of steps back, he knew the door was pretty heavy so might take a bit to get it down. Just as he began to take the first step forward it opened and a dishevelled looking Kelly stood before him.
He didn’t say anything as Matt took in his appearance. His hair, much greyer than it had been when Matt had left Chicago, was stood up in a myriad of directions, he was supporting at least 2 days worth of stubble on his cheeks and if Matt had to take a guess, the sweatpants and t shirt adorning his body were equally as old.
‘Hey,’ Matt said as he walked past his friend and into the apartment they had once shared. Just like Kelly, the apartment was also in a state. There were empty beer bottles littering the coffee table and the kitchen counters, containers of home cooked food no doubt brought over by Cindy and Donna, were sitting out of the fridge.
‘Didn’t want you breaking down the door,’ Kelly huffed as he walked over to the couch and threw himself down on it. Resuming the position that Casey assumed he had been in since he had returned here after the news broke. He reached out and grabbed one of the beer bottles off the table and took a swig, clearly one of the not completely empty ones.
‘I wouldn’t have to if you'd opened it yesterday when I knocked,’ Matt said, standing near the kitchen, unsure if his best friend would welcome him sat down near him at this point.
‘Thought you’d take the hint that I didn’t want company,’ Kelly said with a gruff laugh.
‘Well too bad, I’m here now so why don’t you get cleaned up and we can go see Lizzie. She’s asking for you.’
Kelly shook his head and lowered his gaze, picking at the label on the bottle.
‘I know it’s tough-’ Matt started to say before Kelly’s head shot up, his eyes rimmed with red.
‘You know?’ Kelly scoffed harshly. ‘You’ve had to tell your daughter that her mother is dead and won’t ever be coming home?’ He laughed coolly and took another draft from the bottle. ‘Didn’t think so’, he muttered and his gaze fell back down to the floor.
‘No, but I did lose a fianceé,’ Matt said calmly. ‘And I had to tell the Darden boys that their mother was in jail and couldn’t come home.’ Matt took a deep breath before continuing. ‘And I lost my father when I was a kid too, lost my mother at the same time as well in a manner of speaking.’ Matt swallowed, he wasn’t one to compare traumas but he hoped it would reinforce with Kelly that he was speaking from a place with a little knowledge on the subject.
Severide looked up, the tears that had been held back by his eyelashes before, were now silently making their way down his cheeks. ‘Sorry,’ he said quietly. ‘I didn’t mean it like that.’
‘I know you didn’t,’ Casey said as he made his way over to the living space and took a seat on the empty chair. ‘But Lizzie needs you Kelly.’
‘I know but how do I tell her? I haven’t even processed it myself yet,’ Kelly said, angrily wiping the tears away from his face as if they were a display of weakness.
‘You process it together,’ Matt said steadily. ‘I’m not saying it’ll be easy Severide, hell, it’ll be the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do. But it’s the right thing to do.’
Kelly nodded, keeping his gaze firmly on the floor. ‘I keep thinking I’m going to see her, out here making dinner or coming in the door after a shift. Keep hearing her voice, talking to Lizzie, playing with her. And then I look over and there’s no one there.’ He sniffed and wiped away his continued stream of tears. ‘And if I’d have been there, I could have done something. I could have saved her.’ The final sentence was distorted by a sob and a thud as the beer bottle he had been holding fell to the floor and Kelly cradled his head in his hands.
‘If you’d have been there, Lizzie would have lost two parents that day.’ Matt said slowly. ‘There was a reason when you had her, you went to work at OFI. And you can say it was the hours of whatever, but I know you and Stella had the discussion about you both being on a call. When you’re a first responder and have kids, you have to think like that.’ Kelly nodded but kept his head buried in his palms.
‘I can’t do this without Stella,’ he whispered.
Matt had stayed strong until this point, had decided this was not the place for him to display his grief, he was here for his friend, but the heartbreak in hearing those words brought tears to his eyes.
‘You can’, he said, ignoring how his voice cracked. ‘You’re not alone in this Kelly. Your 51 family is here for you and we won’t let you go through this alone. We’ve got you and we’ve got Lizzie.’
‘She was the best mom’, he said, lifting his head out of his hands slightly to gaze across the room. Matt followed his line of sight and saw that his eyes had landed on a framed photo of Stella and Lizzie laughing. ‘She was scared about it when we found out we were expecting but she was incredible. The pregnancy, the birth, everything. I fell in love with her even more every day.’ He wiped a wayward tear but a hint of a sad smile was beginning to tug on his lips. ‘And then Lizzie came along and she’s the spitting image of Stella. A mini her if ever there was one. She talks like her, walks like her, has her eyes and her smile. Stella taught her everything she knew, and I know she’s so proud of her,’ his smile faltered but he continued. ‘I’m so proud of her. I’m proud of them both. They made me who I am but without Stella… it just feels like a piece of me is missing. And I don’t want to pass that hurt on to Lizzie. She doesn’t deserve that. She’s so perfect. Too perfect to be in pain.’
Matt sat silently, letting his friend get everything out that he needed to. It was breaking him to see Kelly in this much pain and for the first time he really understood why he had been avoiding seeing his daughter.
He was trying to protect her. To let her have a couple more hours, more days, before her life would be changed forever. He didn’t want to be the one that caused her pain.
‘Stella didn’t deserve to die.’ Kelly said into the silence. Matt didn’t know how to respond, he agreed of course but in their line of work unfortunately they could never guarantee they would walk out of every fire. Both he and Kelly understood that but he guessed the reality was something that couldn’t be completely comprehended until it happened.
‘Is she okay?’ Kelly said, turning his head quickly to look at Matt who looked stunned at the question. ‘Lizzie, I mean.’
Matt nodded. ‘She’s fine. She misses you and her mom and has been asking about you. Cindy and Hermann have just been saying you’re still at work which seems to have appeased her for now but it won’t for much longer.’
Kelly nodded, wiping his hands across his face and pressing his heels into his eyes. ‘Will you come with me?’ He asked as he stood up. ‘To tell her?’
Matt nodded in agreement, ‘I’m here for whatever you need. We’re family.’
—————————————————————————
Whilst Kelly showered and got himself cleaned up, Matt busied himself by tidying up around the apartment. Throwing out all the empty bottles and checking the contents of the food containers to see if anything could be saved and refrigerating what he could salvage. By the time Kelly came out of the bedroom, the loft was back to looking in a more inhabitable state.
‘You didn’t have to-’ but Matt shook his head before Kelly could finish his sentence.
‘Don’t. We’re family.’ He smiled, and Kelly returned it, albeit a smaller smile but it was genuine all the same. ‘I called Cindy to let her know we were coming over’. Kelly nodded. ‘You ready?’ Matt asked.
‘No, but I don’t think I ever will be.’
‘Come on then, let’s go’. Matt said, leading the way to the door. He turned around once he had reached it and saw Kelly rooted firmly to the same spot he had been a minute before. He opened the door and waited patiently. He knew his friend just needed another moment, he had said he was going to see Lizzie today and Matt believed him.
‘Okay’, Kelly said shakily as he ran his hand through his hair and walked through the door Matt was holding open for him.
—————————————————————————
The drive to the Hermann’s was tense, the air was thick. Everytime Matt glanced over Kelly he was bouncing his leg and wringing his hands. The old roommates sat in silence, this was going to be tough no matter which way you span it and if Kelly needed any help, Matt hoped he knew he could ask.
When they walked up to the door, Severide hesitated with his fist outstretched, an inch away from making contact with the wood. Matt rested his hand comfortingly on his shoulder and felt an ounce of tension drain from Kelly who knocked 3 times before taking a step back.
Cindy opened the door, a sad smile on her face as she pulled Kelly in for a hug.
‘I’m so sorry for your loss Kelly,’ she said quietly, holding him tightly before pulling back. ‘She’s in the garden.’
Kelly nodded and pulled his lips into a tight line.
‘I’ll stay with Cindy but we will be in here if you need us,’ Matt said, closing the front door behind them and gesturing to the living room.
Kelly nodded again and walked towards the backdoor. Matt heard the yells of ‘Daddy!’ when he opened it. It felt like a stab to his chest knowing that that excited voice would become the exact opposite in just a few moments.
He and Cindy sat side by side on the couch, neither knowing what to say or do, trying to give the Severide’s their privacy but at the same time being ready to jump in with support if it was needed.
After 15 minutes when neither Kelly or Lizzie had reappeared, Matt walked into the kitchen to peer out the window. What he was greeted with, shattered his heart even more.
Kelly was sitting on the swing, with Lizzie in his lap, her body curled tightly into his, his arms around her, a hand running over her hair. Matt could see the tears on Kelly’s face from here and could see how the little girl's body was shaking too. Severide was talking quietly to her whilst lightly pushing the swing back and forth. Matt stood there for a moment, before it felt like he was intruding on a private moment and returned to the living room. He smiled softly at Cindy and nodded at the unasked question.
A couple of minutes later, Severide appeared with a tired Lizzie still curled in his arms holding on tightly to her father.
‘Uncle Matt, is it alright if you take me and Lizzie home?’ He asked, his eyes were still red from the tears but he seemed lighter than when he had left the loft.
‘Of course’, Matt got up and smiled. ‘You okay?’ he mouthed, not wanting to ask anything else outright in front of Lizzie. Severide nodded with a sad smile.
Lizzie fell asleep in the back of Sylvie’s car as Matt drove them back to the loft so Severide carried her upstairs and tucked her in on the couch.
‘I don’t want to put her in her room in case she wakes up and doesn’t know where she is’, Kelly said as he leant against the kitchen island, with Matt on the other side.
‘Good idea. Do you want me to get you two anything?’ He asked but Kelly shook his head.
‘You’ve already done enough man, we appreciate it. And I know Stella would too’, he smiled sadly again. ‘When are you going back to Portland?’ he asked curiously, knowing his best friend must have had to drop everything quickly to make it out to Chicago as fast as he did.
‘Still got a few things to work out on that front, but I’ll let you know.’ Matt smiled as he picked up his jacket. ‘I’ll leave you to it, but call me if you need anything okay?’ Kelly nodded and followed Matt to the door.
‘Thanks again, not sure anyone else could have got me out that door today’.
Matt hesitated and then pulled Kelly into a hug, slapping him a couple of times on the back before pulling away. ‘Family means family’.
—————————————————————————
Matt used the remainder of the day visiting his sister who he hadn’t seen since he had left either. She hadn’t heard about Stella but had met her a few times so was still saddened by the news. She offered to let him stay there that night which he took her up on. Sylvie had said he could crash at hers again but it felt weird being there without her and he didn’t want to intrude on Severide’s time with his daughter.
He got up early the following morning, his flight was later that afternoon but he had a couple of things he wanted to get done before he headed to the airport.
First was to stop by 51. He was picking up Sylvie and a conversation with her was high on his list but first, he had a meeting with Boden.
He had called his old boss and mentor the previous afternoon when it became clear to Matt that he was needed back in Chicago. The same thing that had called him to leave for Potrland in the first place, was now calling him home. Family.
He wanted to speak to Boden about returning to the CFD. And specifically about returning to Boden’s district. He knew he wanted to return to 51 at some point but for now he would settle to being somewhere under Boden’s watchful eye.
He hadn’t expected the meeting to be as direct as it had been. Boden without hesitation offered him the command position back on Truck 81. It wasn’t the same company it had been when he had left but Boden was wary about putting a floater or someone from another house into the empty space. The whole house was grieving and that crew specifically had lost their leader. But if there was anyone who Boden felt comfortable being in charge of the truck, it was Matt Casey. He was grieving too and understood just what an important person's shoes he would be attempting to step into.
Matt had been shocked by the offer and let him know he would need to speak to Kelly about it. Although for years 81 had been his rig, it was Stella’s now and her husband should at least get a say about who would take over. He didn’t want anyone to feel like he was replacing her or usurping her position.
He was still deep in thought, when Sylvie walked onto the apron.
‘Penny for them?’ She asked with a smile, nudging him gently with her shoulder.
‘Not sure they’re worth that but I’ll tell you in a bit. Fancy a walk along the riverwalk? I missed it in Portland’.
—————————————————————————
Matt wasn’t sure what Sylvie’s response would be when he told her he was coming back to Chicago. He hadn’t expected her to jump into his arms immediately but he also hadn’t been expecting the stoney silence he was currently experiencing.
‘Say something Sylvie,’ he asked as they continued to meander next to the river.
‘Don’t come back just for me,’ she said quietly and abruptly stopped.
‘What?’ Matt asked, confused, turning around to face her.
‘I’ve moved for relationships before Matt, and felt stuck and I don’t want you to feel like that.’ She ran a hand through her hair, her expression difficult to read. ‘If you want to come back to Chicago for you, then please do. I know it’s your home. But if you’re only coming back for me, then please… please don’t’.
‘I’m coming back for a number of reasons,’ Matt started. ‘But I won’t lie to you and say that you aren’t included in that. But you’re not the only one.’ He added quickly as she opened her mouth to interrupt him.
‘There’s nothing holding me in Portland anymore. Griffin is in Chicago now and Ben’s off at college. And sure I like my job there but it’s got nothing on the CFD. And I need to be here for Severide. He won’t say he needs the help or even ask for it, but this is going to be so hard on him and Lizzie. I can’t abandon them.’
He reached out his palm, hoping Sylvie would take it. He squeezed her hand lightly when she did.
‘But the reason we didn’t work was because I wasn’t here. And I’m not saying we will get back together or everything would be simple again but if I’m here then at least there’s a chance, right?’ he smiled and Sylvie returned it warmly.
‘There’s a chance’, she echoed. ‘But what about work? Will the CFD have you back?’
‘Boden’s offered me the spot on 81. But I need to talk to Kelly before I take it. I don’t want him to think I’m erasing Stella’s legacy by going back to it. She deserves to be remembered and held in everyone’s memory.’
The pair continued to stroll along the riverwalk, taking in the early morning bustle of Chicago. And if they were still holding hands at the end of it, then neither of them mentioned it.
—————————————————————————
Sylvie dropped Matt off at the loft again, having called ahead to make sure it was alright for him to pop in.
‘Hey’, Kelly said as he welcomed Matt in through the door. A stark comparison to the last time he had opened the door for him. ‘Want breakfast?’ He gestured to the kitchen where the bacon was cooking in the pan.
‘Nah I picked something up with Sylvie’, Matt smiled and followed him over, taking a seat at one of the bar stools.
‘Interesting’, Kelly said with a smirk as he turned the bacon over.
‘Shush, but there is something I want to talk to you about’, he said, a sudden sense of apprehension filling him.
‘Shoot’, Kelly said, busying himself with some eggs.
‘I’m coming back to Chicago. And Boden offered me the command of 81’. He saw Kelly freeze, still facing away from him. After a couple of seconds of silence, Matt continued. ‘But I told him I needed to speak to you. 81 is Stella’s truck and I don’t want you to think I’m stepping in where I shouldn’t, or trying to take over from her.’
Kelly turned around and shook his head. ‘If anyone’s going to take over from Stella, I’m glad it’s you.’ He said with a smile, his eyes brimming with tears. ‘You understand how big of a task it is, to walk in her shoes. And I know the crew would respect you, unlike if someone new came along and tried to take her place. And I know Stella would be okay with it too.’
‘If you’re sure?’ Matt asked.
‘I’m sure, but you’re sure you want to come back to Chicago? You’re not just coming back because of me and Lizzie right?’ He gestured at himself and then down the corridor with the spatula in his hand. ‘Because we’ll be okay, it’ll be a tough road, but we will be okay’.
Matt chuckled lightly, ‘you sound just like Sylvie. No I’m not just coming back for you too, although it has factored into my decision. And no, before you ask, I’m not just coming back for Sylvie either. Chicago is my home and my family is here. And it’s time for me to come back to that’.
‘Okay then’, Kelly said, downing his tools and walking round to the other side of the island. ‘Welcome back to Chicago,’ he said as he pulled Matt into a hug.
‘I do have to go back to Portland first and actually resign,’ he chuckled as Kelly pulled back a smirk etched on his face. ‘But I’ll be back for the funeral in a couple of days, and then I’m staying. For good.’
