Summary: An in-depth look at how the death of Paramedic Leslie Elizabeth Shay shaped the lives of those she left behind.
2. Take My Hand, Take My Whole Life Too
On days when work hits a little too close to home, Matt and Hale take their time reminding Kelly of what waits on the other side of that dark tunnel. This morning is no different. Amid colorful protests, Matt finally coaxes Kelly down the hall to their bedroom for a much-needed shower and sends Hale with him. Today, he’d said, taking Shay from Hale’s arms, he needs you. He left her with a kiss to the side of her head, nodding down the hall.
Hale enters the room quietly, finding Kelly standing at the foot of the bed. Silently, she waits for him to allow her closer, and waits for signs of that shared desire for intimacy. Once she has it, she steps closer, her eyes lock on his and she begins to peel his clothes from his body, layer by layer, taking her time. Hale lifts Kelly’s t-shirt by the hem, gesturing with her chin for him to raise his arms, and with some help, pulls the fabric over his head. Her deft fingers make quick work of Kelly’s belt, the button and the zipper on the front of his jeans, and slide the denim material down his thighs.
Kelly has never been shy about his body, his confidence―though borderline cocky most days―is one of the things Hale adores the most about him. A tiny smirk pulls at the corner of his mouth as he watches Hale’s eyes follow the path of her hands down his bare torso, a kaleidoscope of colors swirling together in her irises. He relishes his partner’s attention, relaxing in the familiarity of it; his own hands at home on Hale’s hips.
He dips his head, warm breath fanning over her lips. His eyes sparkle with mischief, Hale chases his mouth. It’s a game he’s played since the night of their first date; close enough to suffocate her with his presence, with the stifling need to have him, yet far enough to linger just beyond her reach. And Hale Shay falls for it again, falls for him again, every single time.
“Kiss me,” he whispers after the thrill of teasing her has fizzled out to a dull roar.
As another of their unspoken rules, he and Matt never show public displays of affection at work; as it is, they shouldn’t be stationed at the same house, and waiting for reassignment has meant keeping their relationship strictly professional while on duty. Likewise, when Hale visits, none of them ever breaches that boundary.
“Hale. Kiss me,” he says again in a tone he reserves for moments such as this, and Hale does.
She knows at work, Matt and Kelly back each other up no matter the situation, steal glances across the field, and settle for reassuring pats on the back that can’t be misconstrued as anything other than two colleagues in unwavering support of one another. But at home, unrestrained by rules and regulations, they melt into each other with ease and show Hale that same level of devotion and wanting.
Kelly’s grip on Hale’s hips tightens, and he pulls her impossibly closer, unwilling to leave even the slightest bit of space between them. And Hale wraps Kelly up in her embrace, squeezing her arms around his shoulders when he asks for it. The room, the world beyond, begins to fade and they are all that is left. He smells like work; turnouts, the rig, fire and the faint scent of cigar smoke.
Their jobs are not easy, sometimes what they do is brutal and unforgiving. And on the days when it reminds Kelly of all they have sacrificed, all they have lost, Hale or Matt is there to remind him of everything they still have to live for―each other and baby Shay.
Hale removes her pajama pants and Matt’s shirt that she slept in, her undergarments follow, and she leads Kelly by the hand to their bathroom. He leaves behind his boxer beliefs as he follows. The hot water running in the shower cloaks the room in steam and engulfs Kelly in a relaxing fog; here he lets his guard down, and here he allows Hale to carry the weight for him. Though he won't talk about what happened until much later, he lets her take care of him.
It’s Kelly’s turn to pull Hale by the hand, tugging her gently behind him as he enters the tub. He positions her under the spray of water from the rain showerhead, whatever misses her lightly pelts warm droplets on his skin. His green eyes hold a tender adoration, roaming the length of her from head to toe. She is all he has left of the woman who made him who he is today, and he doesn't know how but he wonders if it's possible that Shay had nudged them together all along. That she made sure the two most important people in her life would have each other if anything happened to her. No matter how it happened, he is grateful that it did.
The sun broke through the clouds, beaming down on Marquette Park where the 2011 annual Friends of Firemen Barbecue is underway. Kelly followed Andy through the park to the section 51 had claimed as their own; Andy’s boys, Griffin and Ben, ran ahead of them. He transferred the extra bottles of beer and cans of pop he agreed to bring from their cases to the coolers.
Checking his watch, he scanned the park for Shay; she had insisted on meeting him there, had said something about bringing someone with her, and promised to save him a seat. He knew Squad would pull him to whatever table they secured at some point and as their lieutenant, he would be hard-pressed to say no. But he just needed to see Shay first, to calm his nerves and make sure she was okay. He spotted her, finally, next to a young woman he couldn’t recall ever meeting before.
Approaching the table, he greeted Dawson and the members of Truck, smiling when Shay caught his eyes. He noted that the woman beside her bore a striking resemblance to his best friend, though he was certain now that he’d never seen her. She looked up from her conversation with Dawson when Shay rose to round the table and pulled him into a hug; her hair was slightly darker than Shay’s, her eyes were a brilliant shade of hazel unlike Shay’s green, and the smile she gave him was utterly breathtaking.
“What took you so long?” Shay said, poking him lightly in the chest.
“Had a stop to make,” he said, chuckling.
Shay raised an eyebrow in disbelief but said nothing else about it. Instead, she pulled him toward the head of the table, near the girl he had trouble taking his eyes off of since he spotted her. “Hale, Kelly Severide. Kelly, my sister, Hale.”
“Sister?” He balked, surprise evident in his tone. His eyes darted back and forth between them. “Hang on, I thought―”
“I have two sisters, Kelly. Some people do have more than one sibling, you know?”
“Right. Yeah. No, I know. You’ve just never mentioned her.”
“Happens a lot, actually. That’s because Megan’s the favorite sister,” Hale answered with a smile that made Kelly’s heart flutter.
“Megan meddles more,” Shay corrected.
“Sorry,” he said. “Nice to meet you.” He smiled, shaking her hand.
“Yeah, you too. Shay talks about you all the time.”
“Shay?” he repeated, bewildered. He couldn’t remember the last time he heard a civilian call Shay by her last name, even stranger is that it had come from her sister. The melody of laughter that spilled from Hale’s lips at the look on Kelly’s face punched through his stomach; she was beautiful in a way he couldn’t describe, and his brain refused to form the words.
Hale’s amusement sobered when her sister’s elbow found that space under her ribs. She glared playfully at her before returning her attention to Kelly. “I was a combat medic for almost 10 years, calling her Shay instead of Leslie just came naturally to me. I guess that’s one thing I haven’t quite figured out how to grasp about civilian life yet.”
“She was always just Hale to me,” Shay said, her face wreathed in a beaming smile. Kelly heard the pride in her voice and tucked it away.
“Thank you for your service. So, 10 years as a combat medic; what are you doing these days?”
“I’m actually not sure yet. Got back a few months ago, honorable discharge. The transition has been rough, and I haven’t found anything that satisfies my desire to help people.”
“You will.”
“Do not flirt with my sister, Severide,” Shay scolded, punching him in the shoulder.
Kelly pulls himself from his thoughts, opening his eyes to find Hale standing before him, waiting. He smiles and it’s soft and kind and exactly how he looked at her when they met, when she told him they were having a baby, when their baby was born, and when he knew he wanted to name her after Shay. Lifting a hand to the side of her face, he gently cradles her cheek, stroking the soft skin with the pad of his calloused thumb. He can’t help himself, he drinks in all she is and all he remembers her to be.
“Kel? Did I lose you?” Her voice is soft, soothing. “What are you thinking about?” She reaches up with her right hand, settling her palm against his temple, her thumb ghosts over his forehead, smoothing out the lines between his eyebrows. “Talk to me, hmm?”
Kelly leans his head into the warmth of Hale’s hand, he closes his eyes as her finger continues to stroke a soft path along his browline. He takes a breath in and on the satisfied exhale, he says, “No, baby, you didn’t lose me. I’m still here. I, uh, I was just remembering the day we met, at the barbecue.”
A sweet hum emanates from Hale’s lips and her forehead finds the strong, hard muscles of Kelly’s chest. His heartbeat tattoos itself against the softness of her cheek, his other hand still protectively around the other side of her face. Hale’s sudden shyness fills Kelly with a strange feeling that blooms warmly in the spot where his heart should be. He realizes, while holding her to him, that it’s love: pure, sweet, beautiful love. A feeling similar to the one he felt when she looked at him for the first time.
“Shay was so annoying that day,” she says, voice muffled in his pectoral. She places a kiss there and lays her cheek against his sternum. “She was always so weird about you, and I never understood why.”
“She loved you,” he replies, running his fingers through her hair and along the base of her skull. “She was protecting you. And me, I think.”
“Hmm...wish she wouldn’t.”
“Nah, don’t say that. You wouldn’t have liked me much back then; not how I wanted you to, not with the way I was. Shay knew what she was doing.”
“Right. So, my sister played the long game for you.”
“Hey, no! No! On my behalf.”
Hale giggles, wrapping her arms around his torso and squeezing playfully.
“I was...an asshole when I met you. She didn’t want me getting too close, she didn’t want you getting hurt. Shay knew who I really was then; she’s the reason I changed, became a better man.”
“You have always been a good man, Kelly Severide.” Hale presses another kiss to his sternum, and more after that across his chest. She shifts up onto her toes and presses their lips together. Her kiss is different this time; slower, softer, but filled with every ounce of love and passion that resides bone-deep within her. Kelly chases after the high her attention brings, Hale gives it to him willingly.
“I thought I found Shay on a call this morning,” Kelly says, pulling back and resting his forehead against hers. Hale frowns and then it clicks that he’s talking about their daughter. “A little boy and his mother were trapped in their apartment. I could hear him crying when Mills and I were searching for survivors. She had placed him in the bathtub when the commotion started, by the time she realized it was a fire and they needed to get out, she had already inhaled too much smoke and couldn’t make her way back for him. We got them out before the building came down, they’re both recovering at Med. Will says they’re going to be fine, better than. But I-I― I couldn’t get the image of you and Shay out of my head. I just...” His voice trails off and he takes a shuddering breath in, his throat is tight against the memories assaulting his mind, fear squeezes his heart in an iron grip.
Choking sobs fill the air, pinging off the tiles around them. Hale’s arms tighten around his torso, and she lets him cry. Between his memories of Shay and the call at work, his meter for emotional control is lower than Hale is used to seeing. Exhaustion weighs him down, she does her best to hold him up.
Hale rubs her fingertips through the hair on the back of his head, massaging his scalp as she does. The best way to help him relax is to tell him about what they’ve done in his absence. “Shay is okay, Kelly. She slept most of the time, on her own schedule. She’s been a little fussier than usual, I think she misses you and Matt. I know I do.
“Christian helped so much while you both were on shift, I want to do something nice for him to say thank you. This morning Shay woke up at 2 and has been vocal about her disdain for you being gone ever since. She is still just as strong and healthy as she was when you saw her two days ago, and I’m sure she’ll be even stronger than that any day now.”
Kelly nods his head where it lays on her shoulder, tucking his face into her neck, breathing her in. His body stops shaking as his tears subside; he can breathe again.
She turns her face to kiss under his jaw. She presses her left hand in the middle of his back, molding their bodies together, letting the curves of her chest, her waist, her thighs press into him. “I am still here, my love. I’m right here and I’m not going anywhere. You have me, Kel, as long as you want me.”
He snakes his arms around her lower back, pulling her flush to his chest. “Until the stars go out,” he says quietly.
“Until the sun dies,” she promises back.
They stay there under the water for what feels like an eternity, soaking in the safety of being in each other’s arms. Then Hale mutely persuades Kelly to let her ease the burden. With a little convincing in the form of a few more soft kisses placed along his jaw and his right shoulder, she turns them around and pushes him back under the water. She grabs the bar of Irish Spring soap and lathers it up along his body from his neck down, working her fingers into his tense muscles. The familiar scent of eucalyptus and mint alleviates his stress and lifts the haze of fog that had been clouding Kelly’s mind since he’d returned to the station. Next, she’s squirting a generous amount of shampoo into her hand and working it through his hair and scalp. And here in their bathroom with the mother of his little girl, the woman he fell in love with the moment he saw her, he finally finds peace.

You had known Kelly Severide ever since you were both kids, considering you were next door neighbors. You didn't have the best childhood and needed a friend and you found that in Kelly. You two had grown up and had been there for each other through thick and thin. Through bad breakups with shitty boyfriends and girlfriends. You shut down all the rumors going around about Kelly even though you probably knew they were true especially with him being a womanizer, but you had to defend your friend and crush.
——————————————————————
Middle school hit and your friendship was stronger than ever and you two had stayed thick as thieves no matter how popular he had become. When his girlfriend, and also the captain of the soccer team, tried to get him to stop hanging around you because she didn't like you, he immediately broke up with her. One particular night they yelling and the fighting got so bad at your house that it became physical and your father had hit you and then threw a plate against the wall, breaking it and some of it cut you. Your mother tried to stop it but your father turned on her and she looked at you with a particular look and you ran, you ran to Kelly. When he saw you and the shape you were in, he grew furious but he took you up to your room and cleaned you up and held you that night.
——————————————————————
When high school came around your friendship and crush were still going strong. It became normal around the school to see each other with each other, so normal that his friends started becoming your friends and vice versa. Around sophomore year a particularly bad night occurred over at the Y/L/N Household. Your mother had just passed away due to some complications from the abuse your father had laid on her, the next day your father started to drink heavily starting in the morning and didn't end at all. You had just come home from school to find your father sitting at the kitchen table drinking. “About time you came home.” He said with a bite in his tone.
“I was at school.” You said slightly trembling. Your father looked up at you in rage.
“From now on you're not going to school. You're staying here.” He said not really in the right mental state.
“Dad, I can't do that. I need to go to school.” You said you wanted Kelly.
“Not anymore. Now make dinner.” He said harshly.
“No, Dad. I have homework to do and I promised Kelly I would meet up with him to help him.” You said and the anger flashed through your father’s face.
“You're always with him. Kelly this, Kelly that. I bet you've probably fucked him you slut.” He said and that brought tears to your eyes.
“No, I haven't.” You said “I'm not with him.” You added and your dad scoffed.
“Whatever. Now, get to cleaning this place is dirty and cooking. I'm hungry.” He spoke
“No, I need to do homework and then meet Kelly. I've told you this.” You said something must've snapped in him because he was suddenly picking up his glass and throwing it at you. It grazed you and hit the wall exploding in a million pieces and most of those cut you and you ducked for cover. Your dad stalked over to you and grabbed you by the hair and slammed you up against the wall he was yelling and threatening you. Tears were coming out fast.
“Stop you're crying.” He said and punched you in the face and you cradled your face and that just made him grow angrier. He slammed your head into the wall and then threw you down onto the ground. He kicked you twice in the ribs, breaking some, and several in the stomach. There were plates on a shelf next to you and he reached over and pulled that down over you, they broke all over you and cut you. You were sure you were bloody and not a very good sight to look at. You were close to passing out and you just wanted Kelly.
“Kelly.” You mumbled and your dad rolled his eyes.
“There you go saying his name. He can't save you now.” Your dad said and then brought his boot cover foot and it connected it with your head and that brought stars to your vision. Kelly, you wanted Kelly and now. Your dad finally stopped his attack on you and then stormed away, grabbed his keys and left considering you heard his truck start up. He left the door standing wide open.
Kelly had just gotten home from his baseball practice when he noticed your car in the driveway but not your dad's. He also noticed the door left wide open and that made his stomach drop. He quickly pulled into your driveway and got out and rushed in and the scene before his eyes made his blood boil. You were laid there in a pool of your own blood and semi-conscious. “Son of a bitch.” He said to himself he made it very clear that he didn't like your dad early on. “Hey, Angel. Wake up for me. Please.” Kelly said while stroking your cheek but nothing had worked. “You’re really scaring me.” He said. You heard a voice and it sounded like Kelly’s.
“Kel?” You asked, slurring your words and eyes cracking open. You saw him crouching down in front of you.
“Yea, it's me.” He said
“Dad-” You began but he shushed you.
“I know, Angel. I know.” He said smiling sadly and then pulled out his phone. “I’m gonna call 911. Just hang tight.” He said and you just stared at him everything sounded underwater. You could hear him talking but couldn’t pay attention. Your eyes started to close “Hey, hey, hey. Keep those eyes open for me.” He said but they were already shutting “Y/N-” he said and the last thing you heard before you let the darkness win.
The next thing you remember was waking up in the hospital with Kelly asleep by your side. You hurt all over and you vowed to yourself that you would become a paramedic to help people in need. You tried sitting up and groaned and that is what woke him up. “Woah. Hey. It’s ok, Angel.” He said and got up helped you lay back down.
“Dad?” You asked and he smiled sadly.
“He was found with his truck wrapped around a tree, he survived and when he gets healthy enough, he is going to prison.” He said and you nodded and then your eyes were closing. “Go to sleep, Angel. I’ll be right here.” He said and you let your eyes slip closed.
“I love you, Kel. More than a friend.” You said and he smiled.
“I love you too. More than a friend.” He repeated and you smiled and then fell asleep. When you woke up again, he brought up what you said and told him it was true and he smiled and told you that he felt the same way. From that day you two started to date.
——————————————————————
When you both graduated high school you decided to follow Kelly everywhere and owed him your life because he saved your life. You ended up going with him to the fire academy and excelling through it and had graduated as a paramedic and him as a firefighter. After graduation he had proposed to you and it was an immediate yes.
Considering that you both had gotten engaged you both followed each other through the different firehouses and both ended up at Firehouse 51. When you got the position for a paramedic on Ambulance 61, he got his position on Rescue Squad 3 and you both were so happy. It was exciting and both were so happy.
Kelly and you had talked about kids and decided not to wait until you both were married and when it happened then it happened. You loved the thought of getting married but were happy to be engaged with the love of your life. Getting with you and getting engaged changed Kelly for the good, he stopped being a womanizer and he devoted himself to you and only you.
——————————————————————
You both had been sleeping soundly in your own bed at your house after being off for 3 days and having a lot of fun in the bedroom trying but not really trying for a child. Your alarm had gone off at 6:30 AM and you jolted awake. When you turned over and saw the time you groaned and shut the alarm off. “Is it time already?” Kelly asked with a gravely and sleep ridden voice and you smiled and rolled over looking at him. You didn’t have to go in until 8:00 AM.
“Sadly yes.” You said and kissed him and he returned the kiss. “But hey, we'll be with each other for the next 2 days.” You said and he smiled.
“That we will, Angel.” Kelly said and kissed you rolling over to where he was pinning you underneath him. The kissing got more intense and you were planning on letting it go further but you needed to get to work before Boden had both of your heads.
“As much as I want to continue this. We really need to get to work.” You said and he bowed his head and sighed in defeat. He knew you right.
“You’re always right.” He said and you smiled and kissed him again but he continued his attack on you.
“Kel.” You warned but he just continued his attack on your neck and then he was inching his way down your body until he got to the hem of his shirt that you stole from him. “Baby.” You moaned out and he smirked and went lower to your underwear cover pussy. He pushed your legs open and began kissing the inside of your thighs as he slid your underwear down your legs and threw them somewhere. Then he dove straight in and your head was thrown back “Kelly!” You shouted but turned into a moan. Your hands went to his head he licked a broad stripe up your folds as his hands kept your thighs spread. He swirled his tongue around your entrance and then bit your clit gently and that had you letting out a pornographic moan. Your back arched pleasure and that rubber band feeling was creeping up a tall tale sign you were about to cum. “I’m gonna cum.” You warned and he quickened his pace and when he sucked on your clit and gently bit it again for the second time had you coming undone. “I'm cumming!” You moaned out and that rubber band snapped and you saw stars. You came all over his face and he was licking it up like it was his last meal. When you came down from your high, he was sitting up and lying next to you. You laid there for a few minutes catching your breath “That was amazing.” You said and he smiled and leaned over and kissed you, you could taste yourself on his tongue.
“Have to take care of my girl.” He said after he broke the kiss and you smiled.
“Now we have to get ready.” You said and got up. He laid there watching you. Once you had disappeared into the bathroom, he and when he heard the shower running, he got up and smirked. He stripped off his sweats and underwear leaving him nude. He walked into the bathroom and when you heard the shower door open you smiled.
“Just couldn’t stand it could you?” You asked and he smirked.
“How can? Especially knowing my sexy fiancée is in here all alone and may need some assistance.” He said and you laughed as he started to finish what you had started and then it was your turn to help him. As you were soaping him up and rinsing him off you got down to his very erect and noticeable hard on, you smirked.
“Want me to help you with that?” You asked and he smirked.
“I would never say no to you.” He said and you smiled and he helped you ease your way down once he knew what you were doing. All soap was gone and both of you were clean but you always did enjoy standing there under the hot water. Your hand traveled down to his cock and pumped it while you kissed the tip and kitten licked it and that had him moaning. “Oh, Angel. That feels so good.” He said and you smirked and took the tip into your mouth and swirled it with your tongue and then you started moving your head up and down. Kelly’s head was thrown back in pleasure. One hand went to your head and the other braced himself on the shower wall. “Angel.” He moaned out. You kept changing your speed and then you hollowed your cheeks and took him deeper until he hit the back of your throat. You breathed through your nose “I’m close, Y/N/N.” He said and you knew it was true especially when your other hand that wasn’t on his cock went to his balls you felt them tightening up. What did him in was when you squeezed his cock and his balls at the same time “I’m cumming, Angel.” He moaned out and then his thick load shot into the back of your throat and you swallowed it all. When he was done you slowly drug your mouth off his cock and released him with a pop. He helped you stand up and kissed you tasting himself. You smiled at him “Thank you, Angel.” He said and tucked a piece of wet hair behind your ear.
“Anytime babe.” You said and then you both were getting out and getting ready. Once everything was ready to go you looked at your phone 7:20 AM it read and your eyes bugged out of your head.
“What is it, Angel?” He asked when he noticed your expression.
“We’re gonna be late.” You said and he smirked.
“Then let me drive.” He said and you groaned but agreed. You both walked out to his Jeep and he booked it to the firehouse. 7:50 AM, you had cut it close but now you felt nauseous.
“Never letting you drive again.” You said as you grabbed your bag.
“Oh, come on. I got us here on time.” He said and you just shook your head and the both of you headed in. Both of you put your bags in the locker room and went to hear the reports and once that was over your 2-day shift started.
6 hours into your shift nothing really exciting happened, just a few small calls that didn’t require everyone to go out. You were grateful for the silent morning and not much happening because that meant you could spend time with Kelly and plan your wedding with your bridesmaids, Sylvie Brett and Grabriela Dawson and maid of honor, Stella Kidd. “So, have you picked a color yet?” Sylvie asked.
“I have 2 picked out navy blue and sage green.” You said and she nodded.
“Oh, navy blue would look so pretty.” Stella said and you smiled as you flipped through some magazines. You were mid flip when Kelly walked into the room you looked up when you saw him coming over and kissed you.
“How is my beautiful fiancée doing?” He asked and you smiled and you could hear the girls aweing at you both and you rolled your eyes at them.
“Oh hush. I’m doing well. A little bit achy from the rambunctious patient we had last call.” You said and he gave you a look “Kel, I’m fine nothing major happened and we handled it.” You said and he eased up.
“You know I want you to be safe on every call.” He said and you nodded and watched him walk over to the fridge and grab two bottles of water and something to snack on and brought it to you. You gladly accepted them.
“You two are so adorable.” Gabby said and you chuckled and made room for Kelly to sit down and then you leaned into him and started flipping through the magazine again as he fed you some of his snack. “So, you have a cake picked out?” She asked and you nodded.
“We do. It’s a chocolate strawberry cake.” Kelly said “It’s her favorite and I want her to be happy on her special day.” He said and kissed your temple. You smiled and played with your engagement ring.
“Hey it’s your day too.” You argued and looked at him.
“Yes, but to me it’s going to be all about you and celebrating you being with me.” He said and again the girls awed at the both of you and again you rolled your eyes but smiled. The wedding talk continues and Kelly put his input in. When the urge to go to the bathroom was needed you got up and he whined. “Where are you going?” He asked pouting and you turned to him.
“I have to go to the bathroom, Babe. Unless you want to join.” You said as a joke and he started to get up but you stopped him “I was joking. I’ll be back soon.” You said and he pouted again.
“Fine. I’ll miss you.” He said and you laughed.
“I’ll be right back.” You said and the girls all laughed. You went to the bathroom and as you were washing your hands the bells rang signaling for Rescue Squad 3, Truck 81, Ambulance 61, and Engine 51. It must be serious if they were sending everyone out. You quickly rushed the ambulance and he stopped you before you got in and he kissed you hard and you returned the kiss. “I love you.” You said as you hopped into the vehicle.
“I love you too.” He said and then you both got in your vehicles and then you were off to the call. The call was made by a bystander that had witnessed a gang fight had taken place and there were some casualties but also some that needed medical attention as well as a fire that had broken out due to a bullet hitting a gas tank of a car. Intelligence was also called since it was their case they were working on. You were quick to jump out when the ambulance had stopped. Boden gave orders and everyone got to work. You, Sylvie, and Gabby along with Herrmann, Otis, Kelly, Brian and Peter moved people that needed serious attention to one place and the ones that didn't move to another then the deceased to another with sheets laying over them. Intelligence and other police officers were booking left and right. You had just finished with one patient when Jay grabbed your attention.
“Hey, Y/N! I need you over here!” He said and you rushed over with your bag. When you got there a man in his mid-20s was lying unconscious on the ground but breathing. You knelt down next to him and Jay. Jay was waiting to do anything to help.
“Sir, can you hear me?” You asked while taking a listen to him and everything sounded normal. You still hadn't gotten a response so you made your hand into a fist and rubbed his sternum. That definitely got a reaction out of him because before Jay could stop him, he had grabbed a knife that was in his back pocket and drove it first into your stomach. At first you didn't feel it and Jay was just shocked. You Felt it when the knife pulled out and found its way into your ribs. Jay took action and was quick to apprehend the person and cuff him. He called for someone to get the person off the ground and once they were gone Jay turned his direction to you.
“Hey it's ok. You're going to be ok.” Jay said as he started putting pressure on your wounds.
“Kelly. Want Kelly.” You mumbled out and Jay nodded and looked up looking for your fiancé and when he found him, he shouted his name.
“Kelly!” Jay shouted and that caused Kelly to look up and his face drained of color when he saw you on the ground with blood and Jay trying to help. He was rushing over to get to you.
“What the hell happened?” Kelly asked when he arrived and took over for Jay but Jay stayed close wanting to help his friends.
“I found a guy on the ground unconscious and called her over since she was available. She was checking on him and trying to wake him up and he woke up startled and took out a knife we both didn't see and stabbed her before I could do anything. He was quick and got a second stab in.” Jay said and Kelly nodded, not mad at anyone this could happen to anyone. He knew moving someone without knowing their injuries could end up making it worse for them.
“Kel?” You asked and he looked down and saw you staring at him with wild unfocused eyes. You looked so scared.
“I'm here, Angel. I'm here.” He said and pressed harder on your wounds. Blood was starting to seep out between his fingers. “Jay, go and get Sylvie and Gabby. Tell them it's Y/N. Tell them to bring the gurney and hurry.” He said and Jay nodded and went to find them.
“I'm sorry.” You said and Kelly looked at you confused.
“Why are you sorry?” He asked
“I didn't see the knife.” You said and he shook his head.
“Nobody could've seen it. You and Jay did the right thing in not moving him.” He said and you nodded and then you started coughing which brought blood and it was getting harder to breathe. “Hey hey, don't you give up on me yet.” He said and grabbed your gloved hand and he could feel your ring through it. He decided he needed to be skin to skin with you so he ripped the gloves off and your diamond ring was out on display for everyone to see.  “We have so many plans, Angel. Don't leave me.” He added you so desperately tried to keep your eyes open and you were winning the fight but barely.
“Oh my god.” Sylvie gasped and both her and Gabby got to work. The commotion caught the attention of a few others and they were quick to come over. “Hey, Y/N/N. Can you hear me?” Sylvie asked and you nodded your head and looked over at her.
“Kel?” You asked, losing a lot of blood.
“I'm right here, Y/N. I'm right here.” He said and your head lolled over to look at him. Then your eyes closed and your breathing stopped. “Y/N! No no no no.” Kelly said and removed his hands and started chest compression and that kicked everyone into gear. Gabby put a pulse ox on you and connected leads to you and it showed a flatline and tears came to Kelly's, well everyone's, eyes. “Come on. Come on.” He said and continued CPR. About 2 minutes later your heart started beating again and he sighed in relief. Gabby started an IV and Kelly’s hands went to the puncture wounds again.
Everyone started talking and then you felt yourself being lifted up and onto the gurney by several people. You were moving and it felt like you were floating. Nothing was in focus and every sound was underwater. You were loaded into the back of the ambulance and then you were speeding away. Kelly never once left your side and nobody argued with him.
Getting to Med felt like forever but it was only a short 3 minutes but in those 3 minutes Kelly's world stopped again. Your heart was beating strong and then all of a sudden it just stopped. Gabby was quick to start CPR again. “If we don't get her back soon, her chances to survive are low.” She said and just as soon as the ambulance pulled up to Med your heart started again. When the doors opened there was Connor and a few nurses standing there and as soon as the gurney was off the ambulance you were being wheeled away. Talking was heard but you couldn't focus on it. Your eyes were closed.
“Kelly, you know you can't go back with us.” Connor said
“I know. Just take care of her. Angel, I'll be here when you're done. Keep fighting.” Kelly said, bending down and kissing your forehead and then your ring. “I love you.” Kelly added as tears ran down his face and you were wheeled behind the door. Kelly just stood there not knowing what to do until Otis came behind him and grabbed his shoulders and led him to the waiting room. Before they wheeled you behind the doors, they had taken your engagement ring off and gave it to him. He looked up and saw most of everyone there but nobody said a word. He looked down at your engagement ring and just started to let tears escape. He needed you.
——————————————————————
“Alright I want a quick x-ray and an ultrasound then I want her prepped and quickly.” Conner said and everybody let him know that they understood and then they were on it. An x-ray was taken and the tech froze.
“Uh, Conner. I might want to come and take a look at this.” He said and Connor rushed over.
“She’s pregnant.” He confirmed “Someone call Dr. Manning. Tell her it is an emergency.” He said
“On it!” A nurse said and was quick to get her on the phone. In no time Natalie was rushing into the OR, she was getting the ultrasound up and running and was quick to get it on you.
“It looks like she is 9 weeks pregnant and it looks like the knife didn’t even touch the placenta but it looks like it caught her kidney.” She said “I’ll stay and monitor the baby.” She said and Connor nodded and started giving directions out. The surgery was stressful but it was coming along great. “The baby's heart rate and breathing are great.” Natalie said just about the time your heart rate was beginning to drop.
“Heart is dropping and her breathing is labored.” The surgical nurse said and that concerned both of the doctors. Then your heart monitor flatlined.
“Starting CPR!” Connor said and he started the chest compressions. “Come on, Y/N/N. You got a fiancé that is worried sick about you and a baby to grow and raise” he said and you must be listening because after about 3 minutes of CPR your heart started to beat again. “Ok, she’s back! Let’s hurry this and get her into recovery.” He said calmly and they finished quickly. They had to fix your lung and remove one of your kidneys but you were going to survive.
——————————————————————
4 hours is how long everyone had to wait. Your team members, who were your family, weren’t going to go anywhere especially not when one of their own was fighting for her life. Kelly was a nervous wreck and he hadn’t even said a word since he arrived, nobody was going to push him to talk. Boden had declared him off since it was his fiancée in there and that considered him family. Nobody had come out and whenever someone had come out it wasn’t Connor and his heart sank a little more each time. The plans that you two had made and planned on making were running through his head. He thought about starting a family with you and the wedding you two were going to have. As he was thinking about it all, he remembered your diamond ring in his hand, it shouldn’t be in his hand, it should be on your finger. He took one last look at it and then took his chain off around his neck and unclasped it and slid on it, he then put the chain back around his neck.
Finally, Connor came out and he stood there for a minute until he saw Kelly and the crew. He walked over to them and when Kelly heard footsteps he looked up and quickly stood up. “Connor?” Kelly asked Connor, looked at him and smiled.
“They’re both going to be just fine.” He said and Kelly looked at him shocked.
“Both?” Kelly questioned
“Yes, Y/N is 9 weeks pregnant. I take it neither of you knew.” He said, reading the expression on Kelly’s face.
“No. We’ve been trying but not really trying.” He said and Connor smiled. “How is Y/N?” He asked
“We lost her once but got her back quickly. The knife got her kidney so we had to remove that and we fixed her lung. I’m suggesting a few weeks to a month off from work but she can do very light duty.” Connor said and everyone nodded, mostly Boden. “I can take you to her now.” He said.
“Please.” Kelly said and Connor smiled and nodded. He led Kelly the way and while he was walking past his crew, they gave him a chorus of ‘Congratulations’. They weren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Kelly and Connor arrived at your room and he walked in and sat down on the chair. “If something happens, please grab one of the nurses and they’ll either page me or Natalie or both of us will be here.” He said and Kelly nodded “Oh and Kelly?” He added and Kelly looked up at him. “Congratulations.” He said and Kelly smiled and Connor was off. He was left there sitting with you and letting tears fall.
“You scared me, Angel. When I saw you lying there with Jay putting pressure on your wounds, my world stopped. Then when you stopped breathing and your heart stopped twice on the way here, it scared the shit out of me. We’re going to be parents, Angel. I don’t know if you can hear me but you, I’m so glad you chose to stay with me. I would be so lost without you. I love you so much.” He said and kissed your forehead.
Nurses were in and out checking on you and the baby and the crew came and saw you but couldn’t stay long and Kelly understood and he knew you would understand too. Kelly wasn’t going to leave your side for nothing and nobody was going to make him and Boden understood. He wanted to put your ring back on but refrained against it because he didn’t want them taking it off again.
2 days had passed and you still hadn’t woken up but that was to be understood it helped your body heal. They kept IVs running to keep you and the baby hydrated and it had some nutrients in it to keep you both nourished from the lack of food being eaten. It was during the night when you woke up and you looked around the room taking in the noise and where you were at. Then you looked over to your right and saw Kelly sleeping. You reached a hand over and stroked his cheek which woke him up and then when he saw you were awake, he was up with a start. About that time Connor and Natalie had come and smiled. “Nice to see you awake.” Connor said and you smiled and then grimaced in pain when you tried to move.
“Take it easy. You just had some major surgery. We also don’t want to stress the baby out.” Natalie said and you pulled a confused face.
“Baby?” You asked voice scratchy and Kelly was quick to grab the cup of water and bring the straw to your lips and you drank some and pushed it away.
“Yes, we did an x-ray to see where the knife had hit and when the baby popped up, I was called in and I did an ultrasound to confirm that you are 9 weeks pregnant. I take it you didn’t know.” Natalie said and you shook your head but smiled “Congratulations.” She said with a small smile and you smiled back.
“Thank you. We were trying for a kid but haven’t been trying very hard.” You said and she smiled.
“The knife punctured your kidney and your lung. We removed your kidney and repaired your lung. I want you to take it very easy for a few weeks and if you go back to work then it’s going to have to be very light duty.” Connor said and you nodded. He and Natalie went over a few things with you and then left. They wanted you to stay in the hospital for at least a week to make sure everything was ok and no complications and you agreed along with Kelly.
“We’re going to be parents.” You said and he smiled and nodded then you looked down at your bare hand “Where is my ring?” You asked almost panicked and he smiled and pulled it out on his chain.
“Right here baby.” He said and pulled it off and took it off and put it back on your hand where it belonged. You let out a yawn and he chuckled. “Go back to sleep baby. I’ll be here when you wake up.” He said and leaned up and kissed your forehead again.
As you fell back asleep you smiled and thought about your baby. The two of you were going to be parents and you couldn’t wait. All you could think about is how good of a father Kelly was going to make and you couldn’t wait. You couldn’t wait to marry him and raise his kid with him. The three of you were going to be one happy family and that was something worth staying for.

Tumblr media
Growing up Avery had a hard time. She grew up in a single parent household with a twin sister who was verbally, physical and mentally abusive . She was physically, mentally and verbally, emotionally abused by her father on top of her sister. It's not something she talks about much, but she loves to joke about it if the time is right. Humor is her way of coping.  Growing up she was forced to go see this man every few week and lived with her sister every day. This could be the reason why her only dream was to help people, because she could never help herself.  which why she went into customer service as soon as she was old enough to get a call center job. It just wasn’t scratching the itch. Growing up in Chicago wasn’t alway easy, as anyone would say. Avery grew up in Humboldt park. They were living paycheck to pay check with always talking about moving away from Chicago to some place cheaper but it never happened. She helped support her mom till she retired and moved down south with her sister. She wasn’t the most thrilled when her daughter told her that she applied to the fire academy.
Emery grew up in a different area of the city known as Wicker park. She lived with her mom and dad, till they got a divorce and well things kinda went down hill from that. Emery wanted to help people as well. She worked at a nursing home for a couple years, but it wasn’t something that she wanted to do forever. Her grandfather was a state trooper which is what really pushed her to join the force. Instead of being a trooper she applied at the police academy. Her mother had raised her past the divorce after everything that happened. She could tell you more about her past, there is a maybe kidnapping, verbal abuse. Other things that came into play. Emery mom wasn’t really sure how to feel about her applying to the police academy.
How the two met well it kinda just happened one day and they just kinda clicked. They became friends and have been friends for years. So close that they started  hanging out weekly, doing all the high school stuff.  Emery’s mother worked for the humble school system. So Emery and her brother just rode with her every day to make it to the high school which is where they both went. They grew closer and just became best friends.
Today, the two moved out together into an apartment in Wicker Park. The Two bedrooms apartment was kinda Small only about 800 square feet. The most important thing to them is that they were close to their mothers. Another really important thing to them was that they were there for their nieces and nephews. Emery Applied for the police academy the same day that Avery signed up and applied for the fire academy. It took awhile. It was about six months before Emery got to start at the police academy.  It wasn’t for awhile after that, when Avery started at the fire academy.
Emery Spent little time on the beat, before a new unit started and she was pulled up to the intelligence unit. They needed a younger face, a new face that hasn’t been seen under cover before. She was excited for the new experience. She was in the unit with a bunch of other people. Kevin Atwater, Jay Halstead, Adam Ruzeck, Erin Lindsey, Antonio Dawson, as well as Sargent Hank Voight.  Avery was still working at her shitty call center job. Getting yelled at. Getting told off and personally attacked daily. Seeing her best friend live her dream was not the easiest. She finished work at about 8pm, Emery was still off at a case so she didn’t find the need to go home to a quiet house and went to the bar near the house, it was about a mile from the house.
Few drinks later Avery was to drunk to drive and wasn’t about to walk home, so she ordered another. She didn’t care her day off was tomorrow and it was one of the worst days she had ever had .
Emery tried to call Avery again and sighed heavily and pulled up find my friends “Jay can we go check on my friend on our way?” “sure? What’s up?” Jay wondered asking her as he made a turn
“she had a bad day at work, at least I assume from her string of AHHHHH text messages, fuck this job sort of stuff, and now she isn’t answering my texts.. and there is a good chance she went to the bar and is to drunk to drive home. Likely she is at the one near our house.. but she won’t make it home if she walks” Emery just told him the whole truth there was no point in hiding stuff from her partner “Of course” Jay went to the bar that Emery told him about. Emery walks into the bar with Jay behind her. Avery was sitting at the bar talking to a guy that was a complete creep, who was way to interested in her. Emery knew that Avery wasn’t a light weight. She could hold em down and drink anyone under the table. Avery looked over at the door when her friend came in “Emerrrryryryyryy” Avery said as she got up from the stool and almost fell over “How many have you had?” Emery asked concerned not really sure she has seen her friend like this before Avery holds up a bunch of fingers, “this many” She replied “Come on let's get you home, jay will you take her to the car?” Emery asked eyeing the guy. ‘Uh sure.. Avery right? Come on let's go out to the car and get you home” Jay said taking Avery out to the car. “How many did she have?” Emery asked the bartender as she grabbed Averys back “Only like two and a half” The man responded, "she is in here often and I've never seen her like that” He said dumping her current drink down the drain “to be honest I was just going to call you” “Okay thanks” Emery said figuring she was drugged by this guy sitting here Meanwhile Avery is drunk and looks at the man who is jay who just seated her in the back seat.   “Oh my god look at this cake” she said as she grabbed his ass as he was about to turn away “Sexy can I just part my manner, wanna come to this bed with me” She said patting his squad car seat next to her Jay couldn’t help but smile and shake his head “how about we get you home” He said bucking her in and then closing the door Emery came out and shook her head “creep drugged her” She rolled her eyes getting in the car “Thanks for this” Jay looked back at Avery who was looking outside “so many lights shining, are we in space?” She said out loud he replied “no problem” They get back to the house and Jay helps Emery get her inside onto the couch. And a bucket incase she needs to throw up. Jay and Emery went to finish what they were out to do. Before Jay dropped Emery off at home

City of Burning Angels | Season 1
This series will only be posted on my AO3
Set during: Chicago Fire s.4 | Chicago Med s.1 | Chicago PD s.3
Tumblr media
Premise: Simone Duvalier is a rookie cop down on her luck. Her brother doesn’t want to speak to her, her weekly shrink meetings do nothing but drain her bank account and just when she thinks nothing can be worse than spending eight hours in a stuffy car with a nosey partner, shit hits the fan. The next thing she knows, Simone is standing in front of a dead body, no witnesses or cameras, blood on her uniform, the smell of gunpowder on her fingers and only one gun at the scene -hers. What follows next is a nauseatingly claustrophobic series of court dates, late nights and dark thoughts. As her life spirals into chaos, so too does her health and soon Simone finds herself seeking solace in the arms of a firefighter she met at a bar who probably isn’t any more stable than she is. Will she course correct the half-sunken ship that is her life or will she just pull up a garden chair and watch as the sea slowly envelopes her?
Rating: Mature | 18+
Warnings: themes of depression, death, violence, language, sex, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, lies, implied PTSD, secrets and life-changing decisions.

I found a more heart-wrenching version of When there’s no one to hold you, I will still hold you down on my Google Drive. And uh … kinda thinking of posting that. Same premise and characters, just written completely differently and with a lot more angst.
What do y’all think?

A million thanks to @campingmonkey for making this GIF for me on request. You’re the best!

Kelly didn't really understand what was happening when his alarm went off at 4am. He was ready to roll around and continue his sleep when he remembered why he had set his alarm in the first place. He basically rolled himself off the couch with a groan and padded his way to Beth's room.
Nightmares plagued Beth's sleep. Over and over again she saw that car coming towards her in slow motion. A loud crash, followed by Alex running away, and then she was all alone. No help ever came. When Kelly gently nudged her arm, she jerked awake.
“Sorry,” he whispered as Beth sat up in her bed.
“No, it's okay,” she said, rubbing her eyes with the heels of her hands.
Kelly sat on the edge of her bed, concern etched into his handsome face as he placed a hand on her knee. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah. I'm fine. Just a bad dream.”
“Want to talk about it?” he asked.
"I don't remember what it was,” she lied.
“Alright.” He gave her knee a firm squeeze. “Try and get some more rest. I'm right in there if you need me,” he reminded as he got to his feet again. He was just about to go back to the living room when a small, gentle hand closed around his wrist. He looked down to where their hands connected before he let his eyes meet hers.
It took a second for her to find her voice. “Can you stay here with me?”
She sounded so vulnerable, so broken, that Kelly was powerless to deny her anything. He nodded his head without saying a word and Beth moved over to make room for him before he climbed in. Neither of them spoke as Beth reached down and laced their fingers together, resting her head on his shoulder. Kelly kissed her hair and whispered a goodnight, and before long, Beth had drifted off to sleep again. Kelly on the other hand, didn't want to sleep right away, he wanted to stay awake a little and just enjoy the moment. It was nice to have her so close again, to feel her hand in his as he listened to her heavy, sleep filled breaths. Yes, he definitely needed to savor this moment for as long as he possibly could.
Beth woke up alone the next morning. Kelly had woken up at eight that morning, but he didn't have the heart to wake her up, so he had let her sleep. It was nearly an hour later when Beth came padding into the kitchen, her hair sticking out to all odds and end, her eyes still filled with sleep.
“Morning,” Kelly greeted, flashing her that charming smile of his. One thing he had learned about her was that she wasn't human until she had her morning coffee, so as soon as he saw her, he started getting a cup ready for her.
“Morning,” she greeted back, sending him a smile as he handed her the mug. She took a deep breath before she spoke. “Thank you for staying with me,” she said softly.
“Don't mention it,” he said kindly as they both took a seat at her table. “You remember what you were dreaming?”
“Just the accident,” she said, not looking up at him. “Apparently my brain thought it would be fun to play it on a loop in slow motion.”
“Are you okay?” he asked again, worrying his brows.
“I promise.”
“Can I ask you something?” he asked tentatively and Beth answered with a nod. “You said you’re claustrophobic,” he started.
“Mhm..”
“Does that have anything to do with why you left NYFD?”
Beth sighed and put her cup on the table. “It was a building collapse,” she started. “My partner and I got trapped with a patient we were trying to save. The patient died on impact, and my partner was badly injured. We were stuck there for nearly eleven hours,” she said with pain in her voice.
“I'm sorry, Beth,” he said, reaching out to give her hand a comforting squeeze. “How’s your partner?”
“He didn't make it.” A tear fell from her eye and she wiped it away. “My leg was pinned under some rubble and I couldn't get to him. So I just had to sit there and watch him die,” she sniffled at the memory.
Kelly got up from his seat and rounded the table, crouching down in front of her. It wasn't hard to understand why she had reacted the way she did when she got pinned in that car. He didn't know what to say to her, so he just reached up and cupped her cheek.
She melted into his touch, taking the comfort it provided. “I tried to go back after my leg had healed up, but I couldn't do the job anymore. Claustrophobia and panic attacks don't really go hand in hand with being a paramedic.”
“But it's getting better?” he wondered.
“Yeah, I'm getting there. I guess being stuck in that car- just a little too familiar I guess.”
Kelly didn't quite know what else to say, so he opted to give her a hug instead, trying to provide her with a little comfort. He knew as well as anyone what this job could be like, and he had seen how it could change people. The fact that Beth had left it behind after her injuries didn't make him think any less of her, to the contrary. It took strength to walk away from something you loved, to admit that it might have changed for you.
Beth sniffled into his shoulder, appreciating the gesture. She was about to say something more to him, but before she could, a knock on the door interrupted her, and pulled them apart.
“It's probably just Gabby checking in,” she said as she got to her feet. “You mind? I'm gonna go put some pants on.”
Kelly just nodded and went to open the door. He was expecting Gabby, or anyone else from 51, but he didn't recognise the woman on the other side of the door.
“Who are you?” she asked in a demanding tone.
Beth froze as she heard the familiar voice, instantly turning on her heel to go save Kelly.
“Mom! What are you doing here?”
She didn't answer, just looked Beth up and down with a disapproving look on her face while Kelly seemed as though he was a deer stuck in headlights.
“You know why I'm here,” mom countered, “You gonna let me in?”
‘No’ Beth thought to herself, but Kelly stepped aside to let the woman in. She pushed past them both, leaving her luggage in the hallway. Beth grabbed the suitcase and wheeled it inside before following her mom.
“It's smaller than I imagined,” she criticised as she looked around the apartment. When her eyes landed on her daughter, her hard features softened and she reached out to give Beth a hug. “I was so worried about you.”
Kelly came up to introduce himself. “It's nice to meet you Mrs. Andrews,” he said politely.
“So you’re Beth's friend?” she quizzed, actually making quotation marks around the word friend.
“Oh my god,” Beth exclaimed, hiding her face in her hands. “He's just a friend,” she pressed, pointing to the couch that was still made up.
“You always walk around half naked when you have friends over?”
“I just got out of bed, mom. And I've definitely not had enough coffee for this,” she added that last part under her breath.
“Have you eaten yet, or should I make something for you real quick?” She was already heading for the fridge.
And just like that Beth felt like she was fourteen years old again. “I don't have time for food mom, I have an appointment at the hospital.”
“Oh good. I wanted to talk to your doctor,” she chirped.
“No, mom. You don't have to come. Kelly is gonna give me a lift.”
“Nonsense. I'm here now. There's no need to put him out anymore,” Mrs. Andrews said sweetly, sending Kelly a tightlipped smile.
“No one is putting me out,” Kelly said politely. “I don't mind taking you both if that's alright?” he offered.
“Excuse us for a moment,” Beth said, taking Kelly by the arm and dragging him away. “I am so sorry about this,” she said with wide eyes. “I really didn't think she would just show up like this.”
“It's okay,” Kelly said with a chuckle.
“You should just go. Save yourself,” she suggested.
“I'm a big boy, Beth. I can take it,” he noted. “Besides, how bad can she be?”
“You’re gonna regret those words, Lieutenant.”
***
At least there weren't any awkward silences with Beth's mom around. There was a constant flow of words coming out of her mouth. Everything from complaining about the cold Chicago winter, to gossiping about neighbours back in New York, to bragging about Beth's brothers and their recent accomplishments. By the time Kelly pulled his car up to Beth's apartment, his ears were practically bleeding, and he was definitely excited about dropping them off. Beth on the other hand, was so embarrassed that she didn't have words.
She gave her mom the keys to her apartment and told her she'd be right in.
“Bet you regret not bailing when you had the chance,” Beth noted as soon as mom had disappeared through the front door.
“Just a tad,” he chuckled.
“I'm really sorry about all this. Is there any way I can make it up to you?”
He just shrugged it off. “So, what are your plans now that you have a clean bill of health?” he wondered, sticking his hands in his pockets.
“I don't know. Guess I have to ask my mom,” she joked, making Kelly laugh. Just then, Mrs Andrews stuck her head out the door and yelled something about them catching the flu if they stayed out there in the cold. Beth rolled her eyes and said she'd be right in. “You and Gabby be careful today, alright?” Kelly just bobbed his head. “I hope you find some answers.”
“Me too.” He closed the gap between them and placed a chaste kiss to her forehead before he started making his way around the car again.
“I'm here if you want to talk,” she called out just as he was about to get in.
“I'll keep that in mind,” he said with a smile. And with that he got back in his car and drove away.
Beth watched him until he turned the corner and then she took a deep breath to gather some strength before she headed back inside.
***
The next day was unbelievably cold, to the point that Chicago had issued a state of weather emergency and urged everyone to stay inside. Kelly tried to get out of his car, but didn't get very far before he sat back in and closed the door. He looked around for anything he could use to shield him from the cold during the short walk from his car and to the firehouse. A sweatshirt lay in the back seat, so he threw it on like a scarf and ran inside.
“Wow!” he exclaimed as he came through the door and almost ran into Tony.
“Pretty brutal out there today,” Tony noted.
“Yeah. I just saw a penguin. Crying,” Kelly joked.
Because of the weather emergency, everyone at the station knew that it was going to be a busy day. To top it all off, radio communication was down and the ambulance had starting issues. Kelly was in a good mood though. They had finally learned the truth about Shay’s death, and he really felt like that brought a little closure. His already good mood improved as Beth came through the door, carrying two full grocery bags.
Dawson greeted her first, taking one of the bags off of her hands. “What are you doing here? Didn't you catch the part about staying home?”
“I heard something about that on the radio on my way here. About the same time as I passed a crying penguin,” she joked.
Gabby looked from Beth to Kelly, chuckling as she shook her head. “Peas in a pod,” she muttered under her breath.
Beth turned to Kelly with a confused look on her face. “I made that same joke not ten minutes ago,” he explained, taking the other bag from her hands. “What are you doing here?”
“To make soup… and get away from my mom. Figured you'd all be pretty busy today, and cold, so.”
“I'm sure everyone will appreciate it,” he noted as they made their way to the kitchen. “How long is she staying?”
“I have no clue,” Beth said with a deep sigh. “She doesn't have a return flight and she keeps changing the subject everytime I ask. I hope soon though. She's taken over my entire apartment… even rearranged my cupboards - twice.”
“Wow.”
“Right!? I literally snuck out while she was in the shower.”
“And how many times has she called since then?”
“Just four. I call that improvement.”
Gabby came rushing through the doors, panic written all over her face, a small baby in her arms. “Someone just left her under the Safe Haven sign,” she breathed out.
“What?” Beth exclaimed as she hurried over. “People actually do that?”

When there's no one to hold you, I will still hold you down
A/N: The truth is, this story was born from grief. At the moment, I am uncertain whether there will be more chapters. However, I am planning to cross post to ao3 under the user Ink_and_Smoke when I feel it is complete. Right now, I am just trying to get a feel of sharing it. I do not give permission for my works to be reposted anywhere without my consent.
This story is dedicated to the best friend I lost: thank you for being my Leslie Shay. Always. 🤍
Warning: Major Character Death
Content: Angst, Domestic Fluff, Firehouse 51 Family, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Implied/Referenced Character Death, Flashbacks, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence
Relationships: Kelly Severide/Matthew Casey, Kelly Severide/Original Female Character, Slight Matthew Casey/Original Female Character
Summary: An in-depth look at how the death of Paramedic Leslie Elizabeth Shay shaped the lives of those she left behind.
1: I'll Be Your Lifeline
The call comes at 3 on Friday morning, just as it seemed like the firefighters and paramedics of Firehouse 51 would finally be able to rest. The alarms blare through the station, dispatch calls for all available units to be mobilized for backup at a structure fire in the Near West Side; Kelly had just laid down. He pushes himself from the mattress, digs his feet into his shoes so he's not walking across the station floor in his socks, and exits his quarters.
He stifles a yawn with his fist, pulling on his turnouts in what feels like record timing, and climbs into the front of the Squad rig. He goes through the motions of radioing into dispatch and letting them know that Squad 3 from House 51 is en route, checking over his shoulder for the exhausted faces of his crew. He knows that no matter the state they find themselves in, they'll show up and give 110%; he feels lucky to be leading these men in the field. He catches Tony's eye and the two share a nod of understanding: get there fast, get there safely, but get there fast.
Static crackles over the open channel on Kelly's radio and he hears Matt's voice echo his call to dispatch, "This is Lieutenant Casey. Truck 81 en route to Near West Side structure fire." He finds himself smiling despite the knowledge that they're heading into the unknown, at least they're going together. He's lost count of how many calls they've been on, how many saves have gone down to the wire, how many times he's held his breath before Matt comes walking through thick walls of smoke. They may be on separate teams, but no one has ever been as in sync with him as Matthew Casey. He wonders if Matt is keeping score, too.
When Tony pulls the rig to a stop behind Engine 51, Kelly's the first one off and heading for incident command. A quick debrief reveals that the fire originated on the first floor and is now making its way up to the additional floors, two neighbouring firehouses are already working on evac but they're short-staffed. Kelly nods his understanding and turns to the members of his house, his brothers and sisters in arms.
"All right--Dawson, Brett, you two get set up in triage and help with emergency transportation as needed. Squad, Truck, I want teams of two to fan out and help check the remaining units for any survivors, radio if you need assistance. Engine, post up with the other crews and provide coverage. We attack this thing head-on, we need to be in and out as quickly as possible before this building comes down. Let's move!"
Between them, Kelly and Matt dispatch their men--one from each team--into the burning building (Herrmann and Matt stand by on RIT). Over the years, an unspoken rule within 51 was that the two Lieutenants go in together and no one said a word against it. But that was before their daughter was born. Roan Shay Elizabeth Severide was the moon that lit up the night sky, the star that guided each of them home. And she was named after the one person they would trust to take care of her if anything happened to them--Kelly's best friend, Leslie Shay. One day, they will tell her all about the woman she got her name from.
This time, Kelly was going in with Mills. Kelly gears up and waits for him at the back of Truck; he locks eyes with Matt who sends him a quick nod. To anyone else, the gesture is simply a silent communication between the two lieutenants. But Kelly knows better, and that nod is Matt's way of saying that he's got his back. That he's with him, that he'll follow him anywhere. It's Matt's way of making sure Kelly comes out alive.
"All right, Mills, let's do this," he says, turning toward the building.
"On your mark, Lieutenant," Mills confirms, putting his full faith and trust in Kelly Severide.
One last glance at Matt, and Kelly is returning his nod with one of his own. There is no one else either man would have at his side, at his back, than each other. But this is how it is now, Kelly would be damned if both of them were in immediate danger from the jump. They have too much on the line. Two in, two out takes on a whole new meaning when it's said between them, a promise to always come back.
Time feels like it's dragging on, though the minutes are ticking by quickly. Side by side, Kelly and Mills go down the hallways, breaking in the doors and calling out for survivors. Steady on they go, clearing unit after unit. Then he hears it... it's faint, nearly drowned out by the roaring of the flames and the screaming of splitting wood and drywall. But he would know that sound anywhere, it sticks in the back of his mind, a core memory. The wailing siren of a baby's distressed cry. They have almost cleared every apartment on the fifth floor and this is the last one, with a baby--and God only knows who else--trapped inside.
Kelly doesn't allow his heart and stomach the time to switch places; he signals for Mills to breach the apartment and they enter. The fire hasn't made this rescue impossible yet but it's trying. He knows they have only minutes before they'll be ordered to evacuate, he's done rescues more dangerous than this with less. They're in synchronization as Kelly takes the Alpha and Bravo sides of the unit, and Mills starts along the Charlie and Delta walls. He also knows Mills's diligence is due to Matt demanding perfection from the young firefighter.
("Do exactly as he says, when he says it. No unnecessary heroics."
"Copy, Lieutenant.")
"Fire department, call out!" He hears Mills call behind him and he's grateful for his presence on this call. There is no one in their immediate vicinity, so he moves on.
He advances down the hallway to his left and finds those wailing cries growing louder. Who would leave something so precious alone? he thinks prematurely, he doesn't know the full story yet but his gut is twisting in rage anyway. He echoes Mills's question and waits for a reply when he hears that sound again this time on his right.
He switches gears, turns to face the door and sets his gloved palm against it. The door--for all the rest of the apartment seems to be contending with the fire--is cool to the touch. Kelly lets out a relieved breath and tries the handle, the door opens to him, and he's standing in front of a bathroom. The small room is swirling with tiny plumes of smoke, more so now that it doesn't have to fight with the crack under the door to get in. He finds the baby in the bathtub.
Everything blurs together after that. Somehow Kelly and Mills manage to make it out before the roof caves in and sends floors six through eight crumbling down on them.
Looking back on it later, he will remember the rush of adrenaline that surged through his veins, the look on Mills's face when he spotted Kelly exiting the bathroom with an infant clutched to his chest, and their ability to work in tandem without speaking. He will remember the relief that flooded his system upon reuniting mother and child, the unbelievably crushing weight of the realization that it could have just as easily been him or Matt or Hale and their daughter. And then, as he always does after a tough call, he will bottle it up and pack it away.
* * *
It's after 5:30 when Engine, Truck, Ambo and Squad return to the firehouse. Kelly's muscles are begging for a break, his skin itching for a shower. There are three hours left of this shift and he would like nothing more than to go home, crawl into bed, and not think about work for the next 48. He curses Matt for knowing him so well when he walks through Kelly's office door uninvited and without remorse.
He's sitting at his desk when the door opens, despite his annoyance, he leaves it unlocked for this exact purpose. Matt walks in silently, sits on the edge of Kelly's bunk and waits for him to be ready to talk. Sometimes all it takes is just being in each other's presence to turn a bad day into a good one. Kelly's eyes remain on the silver picture frame--a photo of him, Matt and Hale the day Shay was born. And something tells Matt it's not going to be that easy.
"Hey," he says, after giving Kelly ten minutes and realizing he's not going to say anything. "Come with me."
Kelly opens his mouth to protest, to argue that he's fine and doesn't need one of their routine cigar chats but Matt fixes him with a strong look that says the matter is settled and he can't weasel his way out. He exhales deeply, standing to follow Matt back through the door. "After you," he says, but it's the last thing he wants to do.
The sun rises slowly on the horizon, washing the skyline in burnished gold hues. The first rays of daylight invite them to sit among their coming warmth and work through their shared trauma. Kelly pulls the collar of his CFD jacket up around his neck and holds it there as if trying to shield himself from something other than the chilly morning air.
Matt doesn't say anything for a while, just sits quietly on the front bumper of Squad 3. He cuts the cigars and lights them, handing one to Kelly and keeping the other for himself. He fixes the cap he haphazardly threw on his head and settles back, his ability to wait out Kelly's stubbornness has grown in the last few years.
"You were a hero to that mother today," he says quietly. It's something to say, to break the tension between them but he means it all the same. He doesn't have to tell Kelly that to him, he's a hero every day, it's implied.
He isn't sure what Kelly needs to hear but he's okay waiting. He knows, deep down, the rescue--though successful--took a lot out of him. He can see it in the slight frown he wears, in the dim green of his irises that usually shine like gems, in the way he's retreated into himself in a desperate attempt to block out the world.
Kelly answers with an acknowledging hum, taking a drag from his cigar and watching the smoke he breathes out disappear into the air above him. He's grateful for Matt's stubbornness, even though he doesn't know where to begin articulating his thoughts and feelings. He doesn't want to think about the call, he doesn't want to think about the way his insides were rearranging themselves when he heard that little boy cry, he doesn't want to think about where his mind went for a split second before he snapped back into focus.
"Case, I can't―" He cuts himself off with a swallowed-down sob, tries not to fall apart at the words that are coming unbidden. Memories of the day they lost Shay had been fresh in Kelly's mind throughout the beginning of this shift, and he found himself struggling with the realization that she will never meet her namesake. "I can't stop hearing that baby's cry in my head or seeing Shay's face when I close my eyes. I thought― There was a moment when I thought it could be her, when I thought it was her... And I don't know what I would have done if it had been our daughter."
"But it wasn't Shay, Sev," Matt says matter-of-factly. He understands, now, Kelly's hesitation to let the child go. He understands why he's been so guarded since they got back, why he found him nearly shut down completely in his office. If there is anyone Kelly loves on this earth more than he loves Matt or Hale, it's their daughter. And they feel the same way.
"Yeah, but it could've been," Kelly says.
"But it wasn't," Matt insists. "You went in there, you did exactly what you were born to do, and you saved someone. Thanks to you, a mother gets to watch her son grow up. Sev, no matter how much your anxiety wanted you to believe otherwise, that wasn't Shay. And that little boy's mother wasn't Hale. They are both perfectly safe at home, waiting for us to return."
Kelly nods, he knows Matt has a point but his ability to rationalize has dissipated and all that remains is the heavy weight of fear and grief in his chest. Matt continues, "Kelly, you were amazing today. In a few hours, we will change shifts, we will say goodbye to this family for a couple of days, then we will go home. We will pay Christian who lives down the hall and thank him for helping Hale with Shay while we work and when all of that is done, we will crawl into bed and hold each other and our daughter close."
"I keep thinkin' maybe we should lay off the cigars. You know, while she's still so little."
"You say that as if we smoke them on a regular basis. The last time being when you told me Hale was pregnant. Which means there is something else on your mind, so, hit me."
"I don't know, I've― I've been thinkin' about switching shifts. So there is always one of us at home with Hale and the baby while the other is working."
"If this is about that call―"
"It's not. I've been considering this for a long time. Matt, that call this morning only confirmed that it's something I want to do, something I need to do."
Matt sits there quietly for a while, staring out at the sky and listening to the sounds of the morning as Chicago wakes around them. He considers what Kelly's said; it makes sense. He knows there's probably more that's bugging Kelly but he doesn't push him for answers, even getting him to talk this much is a feat rarely accomplished. He ponders Kelly's suggestion as he lets the last of his cigar burn out.
"Okay," Matt says finally.
"Okay?" questions Kelly.
"Yeah," says Matt. "I think you're right. I think we need to do this for all of us."
Kelly beams, that gem green light in his eyes that Matt loves so much has returned. The tension in his shoulders lifts. "Thank you, Case."
Matt can't help but smile back. There he is, the man he loves with every fibre of his being, fully and completely. "You don't have to thank me, Sev. I'm with you even when shit gets hard, no matter what."
* * *
The rest of the shift passes without incident and Kelly isn't sure they can get out of there fast enough. He decides to forego showering at the firehouse, too eager to get home to his girls. After completing the shift change and saying their goodbyes, Kelly follows Matt to his tuck. The drive back to their apartment feels longer than it is with Kelly's anxiety reaching its boiling point; Matt does what he can to ease his nerves, keeping a reassuring hand on his knee. The cloud lifts once again as the two climb the stairs up to their home.
Outside the door, Kelly is immediately in tune with the sounds coming from the other side. His movements falter and he takes a moment to compose himself when Shay's unhappy wailing sends his mind back to that call. Matt's chest settles at his back, his arms encircle Kelly's waist, and he guides the stressed and exhausted man through a series of deep breaths.
"Hey, hey. Shay's fine. She gets like this every morning we come home. Remember it's just her way of telling her Mama that she misses her Dada and Papa," Matt calmly explains, swaying them soothingly back and forth. He curses the few inches Kelly has on him, standing on the balls of his feet to press a soft, reassuring kiss behind his left ear and reaching around him to unlock the door. "Well, come on then, Dada. Let's go see our girls."
Kelly hums appreciatively, grateful that Matt sees Hale as his too, not just Shay. It happened quickly, organically--falling in love with both of them--but he never expected Matt or Hale to love each other as they loved him. Though, he supposes he got lucky in that department anyway; they were best friends before Kelly's feelings got stuck in the middle of things, and in a way that no one could explain, they were even closer now that they had. Kelly would have gladly traded his life for Leslie Shay's back then, but thanks to her, he has a life worth fighting to come home to.
