The move to Riyadh didn’t happen. After Connor got to Starling, after he saw it was true and how his brother was handling it, (Not well by the way. Not that anyone handled it well. But Tommy’s more destructive behavior was making an appearance while grief raged in him) Connor knew he couldn’t leave his twin brother alone. Couldn’t leave when Tommy just was struggling to get out of bed for the first week, after the funeral. So Connor once again donned the Merlyn last name. But not to be associated with Malcolm. But to be linked to his mother as he pulled on a connection to get an interview for a slot at the trauma residency at Starling General because someone dropped out.  “Connor Merlyn,” Janice Bowen welcomed him with a warm maternal smile and a tight hug that Connor returned. Dr. Bowen’s son may have been a prick but Connor had nothing but fond memories of the woman in front of him (Mainly of her keeping him and Tommy occupied when his mother was with a patient) So he returned the hug and forced a smile for her sake, even though a grimace threatened to make itself known at the mention of the Merlyn name.

In the short time Conrad had been in Chicago, he had charmed the nursing staff and he hovered over Sarah a lot...People were starting to notice. Namely, Natalie Manning who strangely kept trying to subtly push them together. (Which wasn't going to happen...ever for obvious reasons. But also because she was kind of seeing someone else at the moment. But that wasn't the point of this story)

"Why not Sarah? I know he wears a ring, but he told me he's widowed. Has been for six years now and he seems to like you." Natalie told her animatedly at Molly's that night. The other doctor was three drinks in. Natalie continued, but Sarah stopped listening

It was girls' night, per April's request because she fighting with Dr. Choi. So Sarah had been dragged along by both Maggie and April because they 'wouldn't let her hide because of everything that was being said about her because of Robert.'

Something that her brother-in-law heard and it set off alarm bells in Conrad's head, she knew because he was like cling wrap to her. If he wasn't with Dr. Rhodes in the hybrid OR, he was with her. Trying again and again to plead his case for her to move back to Georgia with him.

"Seven years," Sarah interrupted whatever Nat was saying. The other doctor stopped talking abruptly, "What?"

"Conrad's been widowed almost seven years now and I know this because his wife was my big sister. And he hovers over me because he has some delusion that because she isn't here, I'm his responsibility."

Reach for My Hand ('Cause It's Held Out for You)

The residency at Baylor never opened up. Sarah was stuck at Med following the Robert Haywood incident and she was right. After everything, people- all staff alike whispered. About her. Her father and what happened the night he collapsed. She did her best to ignore them though.

Her days were now spent avoiding Dr. Charles unless she had to talk to him. While she also avoided Noah Sexton following her rejection of him. She should have taken April's offer to talk to her brother to get him to ease up. But after the mess with her father, she was reluctant to accept help from anyone.

Her only reprieve was her friends in the ED. They kept her busy most of the time with consults so she didn't have to talk to Dr. Charles often. Months passed and she wasn't happy by any means, but she got used to it. Because it could always be worse.

Instead, her other safety net came in the form of her brother-in-law. Or was it former brother-in-law? Sarah wasn't sure what the terminology was with Nic now gone.

"Well, well, if it isn't little Sarah Reese: big shot resident," Sarah turned at the sound of the familiar voice and Conrad Hawkins' stared back at her with an easy grin.

"What are you doing here? You didn't tell me you were coming when I was facetiming with Gigi last month!" She exclaimed as she turned and wandered closer. Allowing her half-sister's husband to wrap her in a tight hug. Chastain had sent Conrad along to scout out the Hybrid OR.

"Okay," Conrad said, a week after he got there. She had been in line to get a cup of coffee when he appeared behind her. "There are dozens of rumors flying around about you. But I don't care about them because you're going to tell me what's actually going on."

When Sarah glanced back she saw a look that she had only heard about from her big sister. There was a narrowed focus light in his eyes with his mouth turned downward. He wasn't going to let this go.

"Let me get my coffee first." She relented with a heavy sigh. Then with a coffee to warm her hands, she pulled him into a corner. Then she started with her father and his bad heart. From there she moved to his personality disorder and Dr. Charles treating him for it. Everything else that came with Dr. Robert Haywood and the fallout after just came out from there. When she was done explaining everything, Sarah lifted her gaze to look at her half-sister's husband.

"I know Nic's gone, but when everything was happening, I picked up the phone so many times to call her because she would know what to say and what to do." She told him, with a watery catch in her voice.

"Why didn't you call me?" Conrad asked quietly, "Why didn't you let me help you?"

"What could you have done, Conrad? You have Gigi and you just started back at Chastain. You have a lot on your plate. You didn't need me to add to it with my family drama."

"Sarah, you're Nic's little sister. You're Gigi's aunt. You're my family. As for what I would've done, I would've suggested you come home." Conrad pressed, tapping on the table for emphasis.

"To New York? With my mother?" Sarah pulled a face, before she shook her head, "No, thank you."

"Not New York. Georgia."

"Georgia? Why would I go there?"

"Because you'd have family-me and Gigi and a job there."

"A job?"

"At Chastain. One phone call from me and you'd have an interview in no time; you know how much Nic always hated that you moved to Chicago to finish med school."

Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):

- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue

- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS

- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria

- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!

- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better

- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag

- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag

- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes

- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later

- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users

- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing

- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic
