#captain flint's reading list
Black Sails - update on Captain Flint’s reading list - quick thoughts
I’ve been working my way through what I’m calling Captain Flint’s reading list - or the key books he either owned or were key to the plot of the show.  To keep things fresh I have been reading more than one book at a time.
A few books were hard to find as e-books or based on the original formatting that has been maintained for the copies, I chose to purchase the hard copy.
Tumblr media
After getting my Covid booster shot, I popped into a bookstore and got a hard copy of Meditations.  I’d been getting tired of the free ebook with rather over the top language.  This copy is hailed as the first translation in a generation from 2003 by Gregory Hays.  I’ve been taking my time with it and find this translation to be more direct in its intentions.  It still keeps the true feelings of the text, but it does shy away from the more dramatic:
- You should be like a rocky promontory, against which the restless surf continuously pounds.  It stands fast while the churning sea is lulled to sleep at its feet.
which is what Miranda reads to Richard Guthrie as her favorite selection.
The Hays translation instead goes with:
- To be like the rock that the waves keep crashing over.  It stands unmoved and the raging of the sea falls still around it.
The ebook version has this variation from a translation by Casaubon, which is edited by someone who isn’t credited in the document.  It is clear though that Casaubon took liberties with the translation - including paraphrasing things for the current reader of 1634 or 1635:
Tumblr media
I have a feeling that some of these 17th and 18th century translations seem to have taken a rather loose interpretation of the text for their contemporary readers.  I’m now personally curious to go digging around for the original Latin text and see if I can clear out the cobwebs of my own Latin skills which have gone unused for over twenty years.   All in all, I’m starting to favor Hays’ translation which has that more exact vibe I recall from translating prose myself many moons ago.  Latin is always so clear what is going on with its over the top number of verb tenses and noun declensions, but damn, they do tell you exactly what it going on.
Leviathan - by Hobbes.  This is one that I’m still reading the ebook version since it would be pretty thick. Honestly, this was likely not the best -or- maybe the best choice to read around Midterm elections.  I could just absorb the Hobbes-ness of it and feel smug as the political theatre was turned up to 11.
Tumblr media
I love the transcriber’s notes on the text in the second paragraph - ‘and sometimes, it seems, just because.’  I can wholeheartedly agree with that statement.
My favorite parts so far are the oft quoted ‘of accidents of bread and cheese’ and his refusal to use consistent spelling of ‘we’ or ‘wee’ for ‘we’; sometimes using both spellings in the same paragraph!  Lastly, his spelling of corn as ‘corne’.
Joking aside, it is a very interesting read.  The first part goes about defining what is man, common sense, human nature, fighting against that human nature which would be a state of war and general crappiness.  The idea that people suck and will sink to their lowest level = conflict/war is pretty obvious.  It ties on the idea that uncivilized places would be in this state of war while a civilized commonwealth would not.  But anyone watching Black Sails knows that the longer the series goes on the more and more you wonder what is a civilization? What makes a civil society?  When is it justified to fight for your rights and wage war against an oppressive force?  The pirates of Nassau both wage war upon merchants (and each other) yet have democratic crews voting on leaders and choices and giving leadership to someone with their consent which is a great transition into part two.
The commonwealth where people put aside those natural instincts and surrender their rights to the commonwealth to maintain order and stability.  This commonwealth is led/cemented by the sovereign, who can drive all policies even if the people feel they are incorrect or flawed.  What reading the text really highlighted for me how loosely the concept of the social contract and the role of the sovereign are communicated in passing.  Multiple times Hobbes is quite clear that the ‘sovereign’ can be a single individual or can be an elected government of a collection of individuals.  Furthermore, if it is a single individual, he’s staunchly opposed to the idea of that power being hereditary since it would just make him a king.
Are we as viewers to see the juxtaposition between England being civilization where the people of the commonwealth put up with the government to manage them while the pirates exist in a more primitive state of nature?  Or is it through the process of removing oneself from the colonial naval complex where one is ruled by fear and punishment (that state of war/conflict) and by breaking free of this and forms a commonwealth where a crew democratically elects a captain and quartermaster, thus creating a social contract in a state of ‘lawlessness’?
Does Flint’s knowledge of Leviathan both feed into his belief that most men are dumb and would revert to that state of nature? E.g. Flint to Silver - “If left up to their own devices they’d eat it raw.” However, is it by joining his crew and his commonwealth, they escape that state of nature by forming a social contract with him?
I’m currently stuck in part three where he discusses the Christian commonwealth b/c well, he sort of has to address the geopolitical elements of the time and the power of the Church and the Church of England.  It is a rather dry part of the text but there is no way it would have been published without the religious element.  I’m not as excited by a man using Biblical text to back up his thesis that a commonwealth lead by a sovereign is key to advancing society and government. La Galatea - by Cervantes (Gyll translation).  I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book.  It is stated to be a pastoral romance - an excuse to have lots of poems in homage to the man who really solidified the genre - Virgil.  The idea that it is a single romance is misleading - it is all sorts of romances between shepherds and shepherdesses as well as a few cavilers and more noble ladies.  The book introduces the famed Galatea, a beautiful shepherdess who has two men very much into her, Elicio and Erasto who happen to be best friends.  I found some of the more exciting stories of Timbrio and his horrible luck in all of his travels.
The worst part is that the book ends with Elicio going forth to try to “rescue” Galatea from an arranged marriage by her father.  And then Cervantes ends it with a statement that if the book is received well and his patrons give him some money, he’ll write book two.  However, there is no book two!  We’ll never know what happens.
For Black Sails, this means that James gave Miranda a book where the two boys never get the one girl!  The prose is interesting and the poems are pretty much entirely about all sorts of romances/love/rejection/lust but there is no way to know how this ends.  I have to admit, I wanted to know what happened! However, if Flint read the beginning where it describes Elicio as the more sophisticated shepherd and Erastro as the overly educated and eloquent but of the proletariat with a lovely lady who has their attention. . . . Well, he likely saw it as representing Thomas and himself.  Two very different men (strange pairs in Thomas’s words) with a single woman between them, Miranda.  Or are we to feel terrible that Miranda was given a book which didn’t reveal what happened thus her stuck with her ultimate fate while James and Thomas remain?
After talking with a friend, I was told to give Don Quixote another try.  She’d also complained she struggled with it previously, and that I should seek out the Edith Grossman translation.  I’ll see if I go down that path in the near future. Lastly, I’ve started Hugo Grotius’ De Jure Belli ac Pacis - with a harder to find edition of the second English translation by William Evats.  I’d originally gotten a version from a right wing publisher in Indiana which annoyingly split each book up into an individual version as a part of their ‘Natural Law and Enlightenment Classics’ and references a 1738 version of the translation after the end of the series.  I found the Evats’ translation from a law book publisher which dates back to 1682 and completely replicates the original text, odd printing format and all.  Plus, it includes all three books in one volume.  The language is quite similar to reading Hobbes with the need to define what is right, war, nature etc.  But that makes sense since it was published in 1625 and Leviathan in 1651.
This will likely become more interesting as I get further into the book as it defines when war is justified, if the law applies in war and all sorts of other issues that are always swirling around in the series.  The index references piracy several times where it concludes that robbers and pyrates do not = a civil society despite their equity among themselves.  I was a little eager to see what Mr. Grotius had to say on the issue and I’ll see how it fits into the context of the greater work soon-ish, when I get to book III.

10 Best Black Sails Fics I Read in 2023
In honor of Black Sails' 10th anniversary, here's a list of my top 10 favorite Black Sails fics I read in 2023, in order from shortest to longest. Most Black Sails fic rec posts I've seen are now around 2 or 3 years old (though not all, bless @jaynovz and your #jay's esoteric rec lists tag) so nearly half of the recs in this list spotlight newer fics. It's amazing to see fantastic fics still being written and updated years after the show ended - y'all are keeping this fandom alive!
I didn't read that much Black Sails fic this year, comparatively speaking, so I'm sure there's plenty of newer gems that I missed. All the fics in this rec list are Silverflint unless otherwise stated.
1 - Gone To Port Royal by Apetslife (G, 3k) - a delightful oneshot from Gates' POV where they all go to a pirate afterlife. every scene is perfect. endlessly re-readable and never fails to make me smile.
Definition of Valhalla 1: the great hall in Norse mythology where heroes slain in battle are received 2 : a place of honor, glory, or happiness: heaven
2 - i’ll be seeing you by youatemytailor/@annevbonny (NR, 19k) - this is THEE post-canon Silverflint reunion fic. the anguish, the rage, the quiet jokes, the tenderness, it's all devastatingly in-character. particularly the chapter 5 climactic unspooling leaves me in awe upon every reread.
Silver is out of his chair and across the room before he knows it. He has a grip on the barkeep’s shirt before he knows it, and he’s pulling him up, hauling him eye-level, only to head-butt him to the ground again. The barkeep’s mouth is thrown open in a wail, but there’s no sound, Silver thinks, no sound at all, save for the blood rushing in his ears as he looks at the other man on the ground, watches him roll to his side with a groan. Flint, Silver thinks, and nothing else. It beats around the knife in his gut like a drum. Flint. And then Flint is looking at him.
3 - The Dark Lord Proprietor by Amiril/@runawaymarbles (M, 19k, Silverflintham) - a fuckin hysterical supervillain AU. Thomas has amnesia, Flint is pining, Silver tries to get them back together. what could go wrong? could not stop cackling.
A year ago, James Flint was in a stable relationship and was within spitting distance of taking over London. Now he’s single, with a dubiously loyal henchman, a lairmate determined to learn his every weakness, and a Secret Past with the new supervillain on the scene. And thanks to a new government program, it’s all a race to the bottom.
4 - the cross dimensional nassau bar of getting izzy hands laid by FortinbrasFTW/@fortinbrasftw (E, 19k ~WIP~, Flint/OFMD Izzy Hands) - a Black Sails OFMD Flint/Izzy Hands crossover. the very best kind of smut-as-character study. funny, gripping, and endlessly re-readable.
The first thing Izzy realizes is he looks absolutely fucking furious — which yeah, alright, fair enough. He’s got shorter ginger hair. A beard like Izzy’s but kept neater. Earrings like Izzy’s but worn simpler. Bleeding like Izzy but, well, maybe a bit less. And he’s handsome. Izzy realizes it suddenly and slowly somehow all at once. Bit like a bloody painting even. The kind you saw up on walls in rich folk’s houses. Only, well, no painting had eyes like that, did it? You’d have to be mad to keep a painting with eyes like that in your home. They were bright and clear and looked — honest-to-fucking-Christ — ready to set the whole damned world on fire. Izzy's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad night takes an interesting turn thanks to a completely different sort of pirate captain.
5 - frail and fragile bars by Ajaxthegreat/@francisthegreat (E, 21k) - Silver realizes, post-shark date, that he's in love with Flint. an instant, iconic fave fic. SO many delicious scenes and quotes that live rent free in my head. just read it, you won't regret it.
“I think you fuck,” Silver says. By which he means, with great intent: I think you are human. I know you are human. I see you.
6 - the whole estate of mortal man by Amiril/@runawaymarbles (T, 43k) - Creature Silver AU where he'll grant wishes in exchange for souls. first read this fic in 2020 and cried. reread it this year and cried again. the nature of the AU intersects so cleverly with Black Sails' themes, and the end result is devastating.
Silver has a limited memory, an unlimited lifespan, and a need for human souls. He spends months trying to buy Flint’s.
7 - our feast is but beginning by x_etoile_x/@etoilesombre (E, 55k) - Flint teaches season 1 Silver how to cook. they're definitely not dating. no, really. this writer writes dialogue so in-character that it cuts like a knife. features sensual cooking, Flint being a queer mentor for Silver, fun genderfuckery, and Them Being Real Tender.
Flint should walk away. Silver can figure out how to feed the men, it isn’t his problem. But roasting a pig is so easy, and when was the last time he had a hand in creating something rather than destroying it? Anyway, what else is he doing, with Billy taking the crew in hand with such annoying competency? He absolutely does not think about why he is reluctant for this interaction with Silver to end. “Go get another pig,” he says before he can reconsider. “Do exactly as I say.”
8 - With Strange Aeons by Amiril/@runawaymarbles (M, 60k, Silverflint + Flinthamilton + Jackanne) - Came for the Silverflint, stayed for the Silverflint but also for holy fuck Jack and Anne are sent to Savannah and break out of there with Thomas to battle literal Cthulhu. How can you NOT read this. I don't typically read Flinthamilton, but by god Thomas is amazing in this.
After the disappearance and presumed death of Captain Flint and Long John Silver, Max smuggles Jack and Anne to Oglethorpe’s plantation. Thomas learns that not only do the three of them have a friend in common, but he is not the only one whose dreams are haunted by a strange city and a terrifying name. Meanwhile, Flint and Silver try to escape an island trapped in time, impossibly built and impossibly old. Along the way they’re forced question reality, each other, and themselves. And in his house in R’lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.
9 - The Salt and the Sea by x_etoile_x/@etoilesombre (E, 60k) - a between season 2 and 3 recovery fic. i still remembered months after reading that chapter 4 in particular left me undone. a harrowing journey into the ruins of post-leg loss Silver's mind, plus exquisite hurt/comfort.
John Silver was always able to make the best of a situation. If this particular situation had started to feel complicated, well, a vast fortune ought to prove clarifying. Whatever he might have imagined he’d seen in Flint, the reality was they had used each other. And he had been set to walk away on top. Except now he couldn’t. Now he was trapped.
10 - the straight walk home by vowelinthug/@vowel-in-thug (E, 73k, Silverflint + Jackanne + Maxanne + Billy/Vane) - A western AU and one of the best long fics in the fandom. Excellent comedy, amazing AU twists on our favorite characters, found family vibes, nail-biting action, and a fucking fantastic climax. Also, I can't believe this fic got me invested in Billy/Vane.
Let me tell you a story, about a vaquero named Vasquez...

a bit silly, but if you had to fill an Avengers roster, who would you pick?
Wooof, oh me oh my. Let's lay down some ground rules before I do this. 1). Only people who have been Avengers at some previous point in time. Doesn't narrow it down a LOT but this list would be a jigsaw of my favorite Z-Listers otherwise 2). Limiting it to seven people. That's the magic number with superhero teams and it gives me a reason to stop
Tumblr media
Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America: Sometimes you just cannot beat a classic and when it comes to Avengers line ups there is no one that I think is more integral than Captain America. The pathos that he brings to the table no matter what character he is interacting with is palpable and reading through his first big volume has given me a deep respect and love for the character. He's our leader for sure, the axis of solid, steady service I can hang my weirder picks on.
Tumblr media
Dr. Walter Newell AKA Stingray: You all saw this coming and don't act like you didn't. One of my favorite if not my FAVORITE Marvel Characters of all time. He's a doctor with an interesting specialization. His "I'm only a part time superhero" hangup is even funnier and more interesting if forced into the limelight on THE hero team. Not to mention he comes with his own swanky Hydrobase we can use for an HQ and with his wife and four kids running around underfoot we have the kind of domestic adorability I think any good team needs.
Tumblr media
Miguel Santos AKA Living Lightning: The first time I can ever remember reading about a comic book hero being gay, as just like, part of who they are. A tiny detail in their rich inner life. Not to mention the less respect a character gets the more I want to lift them up on my shoulders. He could be the sweetheart with a little chip on his shoulder from not getting the respect his objectively awesome powers objectively deserve.
Tumblr media
Angelica Jones AKA Firestar: Something you may not know about me. The first piece of media that really opened my eyes as to the potential and depth and scope of the Marvel Universe was Spiderman and His Amazing Friends. It was cheesy, it was cheap and yet Angelica was the first character that I felt SPECIAL for knowing and caring about. She's happy, she's passionate, her simple classic costume kicks ass and the New Warriors need their goddamn respect. 'Nuff said.
Tumblr media
Sersi, Just Sersi: What little I have seen of this character fucking FASCINATES me. This woman is chaos incarnate. It's like she is actively making on the fly decisions with everyone she meets whether she's going to kill them, screw them, turn them into a small mammal or some combination of the three. She's *Instant Plot Complication Just Add Water* because she saw a butterfly and that somehow translates to her blowing the entire team's cover.
Tumblr media
Dane Whitman AKA The Black Knight: I love everything about him. I love his vibe, I love the fact that his backstory is built partially around recontextualizing the lore of a mostly forgotten Atlas fantasy comic. I love that he has a wickedly evil cursed blade that comes with the side effect of basically holding him hostage to a heroic moral code. And on top of that he's a dorky intellectual who can't see a social cue if it's blaring at him from oncoming traffic.
Tumblr media
Jennifer Walters AKA She-Hulk: ...I do not feel the need to explain or justify this choice. YOU know Jen is awesome. *I* know Jen is awesome. She-Hulk does not need justification. She shows up in stories and makes them better by existing. Also yes this is the bodytype I'd use. Yes, I have an addiction. No, I don't feel the need to explain that either. RESERVISTS: Characters I really like but either don't know enough about or don't think they make good Avengers
Marc Spector and System AKA Moon Knight: One of my favorite dudes but does NOT play well with others. Was interesting for about 10 seconds as a member of the West Coast team but I'd prefer he never touch the ranks again.
Flint Marko AKA Sandman: Marvel did Sandman fucking dirty by never letting him fully reform and be the good guy. I want Sandman to be the good guy dammit
Maria de Guadalupe Santiago AKA Silverclaw: I know literally nothing about her outside of reference books but her powers are dope and I dig her vibe.

i'm nominating this fic for most apt use of the ao3 tag "Belligerent Sexual Tension" SERIOUSLY oooooough
Hal Gates is a man of moderation. He is not prone to impulse or hotheadedness. So why is it that this all goes out the window when it comes to a man named Flint?

rated E. De Groot/Dr. Howell + unrequited Howell/Flint.
absolutely masterful portrayal of Howell's unrequited affection for Flint shifting to a requited friends-to-lovers situation with De Groot. (with bonus background silverflint)
"Welcome aboard." De Groot lowers his voice to a near-whisper. "Don't mind the captain's disgruntled mood. He may be a capricious bastard, but he's damn good at his job. The best, I'd say. You get used to his ways."

Silverflint “In Peril” Fic Rec List
Hi guys! I got an anon a few weeks ago requesting Silverflint recs with the prompt: “one of them being in danger/peril/kidnapped (or anything akin to that) and the other going just above and beyond to save him. something with the vibe, if you hurt him i'll kill you.”
There were hmmm not as many as I thought with the EXACT getting rescued parameter but I compiled some similar ones as well. Enjoy.
--
Affinity by Magnetism_bind
Summary: Silver spends his time while captured by Hands thinking of Flint and ignoring his feelings for the man.
It's a little harder to do so after Flint rescues him.
Notes: Oneshot, 4.6k, definitely the best and most faithful example of the prompt as submitted. Silver is held hostage and brutalized by Israel Hands and Flint rescues him.
Another Way by x_etoile_x
Summary: Silver doesn’t get the chance to turn back and attack the Spanish soldiers when he and Flint are captured on the warship, so he needs to come up with a different plan. Things get out of control. A retelling of their time on the warship at the beginning of S2, in the aftermath of this.
Notes: Long fic, 29k. Fantastic story on many levels. For the list, first chapter has a direct fulfillment of the prompt--Flint is in danger, Silver goes above and beyond to save him.
Fifteen Men in September by ballantine
Summary: Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!
A Black Sails origin story for the song.
Notes: Long fic, 34k, just a fantastic read. There is a pivotal scene where Silver kills a man on Flint’s behalf and then further scenes of both of them in peril, Silver gravely ill. Very much the “going above and beyond” and “if you him I’ll kill you” vibe.
we were never meant to survive (but what if we did) by explosiontimothy, inwardphae
Summary: Since you still haven’t told me your name, I shall call you Jonah. You are so obsessed with sea and water that you’d make a home out of the belly of a whale if only it meant not to touch foot on solid land ever again. What if you get stuck there? I’d be forced to make my way to you and drag you out, cut the whale’s skin with my knife like a shark with its teeth and carve my shape out of it. And yours. There are two fighters, on opposite sides of the time war. They have never met but they know each other's names. But names are powerful, untamed things when they are spoken out loud. So they don’t call each other by their names, ever. Until, one day, they do. The Silverflint Time-Travel AU no one asked for, but you're all getting anyway.
Notes: Long fic, 46k, big concept sweeping crossover with the book This is How You Lose the Time War. Without spoiling, this story very much embodies “going above and beyond to save him.” Top tier.
darkness in his fingertips, eyes just the same by Jaynovz
Summary: A desperate fear is welling up in Silver. Flint, injured? How grievous a wound must it be to keep Flint from a battle? To prevent him from heading up the rescue party? Flint, who Silver had seen take a warship with a shot shoulder, Flint, who shrugged off injuries from raids with an annoyed grimace as if they were minor inconveniences. Silver’s heartbeat is too fast and too slow at the same time, ice creeps around him from all sides at the stark reminder that Flint is mortal. The man who would sneer at God, who would sail straight into a tempest, who seemed to control reality with his demons… Silver has seen Captain Flint bleed, yes, but it’s never mattered like this, never truly hampered him.
And on the heels of this fear is something far less enfeebling, something Silver embraces: a dark vortex of rage.
Notes: Oneshot, 4.3k. A reaction to in peril. An alt canon take of early s4 where Billy injures Flint at the Underhill Plantation. After Silver returns, he murders Billy for the insult. “If you hurt him, I’ll kill you” exactly.
frail and fragile bars by Ajaxthegreat
Summary: “I think you fuck,” Silver says. By which he means, with great intent: I think you are human. I know you are human. I see you.
Notes: Long fic, 21k. A very excellent story overall, and for this list specifically, it features Flint taking a sword to protect Silver in battle and Silver murdering the man responsible.
how we could be brought here by love by mapped
Summary: A 4x03 AU where Flint receives a minor injury in the battle of Nassau Town and Silver is very shaken by it.
Notes: Oneshot, 3.7k. Not a rescue so much as Silver’s intense reaction to Flint being hurt. I think it fits the vibe.
in over our heads by Jaynovz
Summary: Set at the end of 2.1.
The remaining Walrus crew want Silver flogged.
The experience creates some altogether unexpected outcomes.
Notes: Mid-size fic, 13k. Silver is flogged, Flint is very affected by that, takes care of him after, and they both learn a lot about each other ahem. “If you hurt him I’ll kill you” vibes definitely feature.
please do not let me go by natlet
Summary: Vulnerability, it turns out, is a blade that cuts both ways.
Notes: Series, 5 stories, 39k words total. An overall excellent series of Silverflint fics, however the one I’m thinking of for this list is the fourth, all pale and panting, where Flint is gravely ill and Silver goes above and beyond to take care of him.
--
As always, let me know if you have a suggestion for an inclusion and I’ll give it a look. Thanks.

Oh boy... OH BOY... I was reading through comments and tags under that Flint vs. Stede post (and before that in Silver vs. Oluwande post) and OH BOY RANT INCOMING
Feel free to ignore. No, I'm prickly about this.
I LOVE how people are like "Black Sails fans are so mean why are they like that T.T ?" in the tags and comments.
LET ME TELL YOU.
So we have this show that has been marginalized and has been pushed to the side for years. A show that has excellent plot, wonderful intrigue, magnificent representation and well-written, 3D characters that are complex and relatable. You get your edgy queer men (whether you want to characterize Flint as gay or bi, doesn't change the fact that he likes dick whichever way), you get your edgy queer girls (Anne), you get your flamboyant whatever-the-fuck-Jack-Rackham-is (<3), you get sweet gays (Thomas), you get confused bisexuals (Eleanor, Silver), you get straight sweets (Miranda) and straight angery dicks (Woodes Rogers), and competent, edgy straights (Vane). Oh! A competent, master-of-the-house lesbian? Check (Max). You even have asexuals, or that is what I shall forever classify Billy as. You have a f/f sex scene in the first damn episode, ffs. You get threesomes (sexual, romantic), you get couples, you even have Silver in a brothel orgy.
But sexual representation is not ALL! You get goofy pirates (Jack Rackham), you get serious pirates (Blackbeard), you get balls of rage (Flint), you get chill, laid-back sea dogs (Gates), you get competent little weasels (Silver), you get incompetent rats (Dufrense). You also have marvelous extras and side characters (Beauclerc the marksman, Captain Fruit-Fruit, Idelle... OHMYGOD IDELLE <3333).
There's the political plot that's historically accurate, the story's plot that's Flint's big gay rage, there's the sociological context of being painted as a monster, there's the gold hunt, there are ships correctly operated by crews of more than five fucking people, there are guns, blood and realistic injuries. You get quotations and allusions to Shakespeare, Cervantes, Julius Caesar, Marcus Fucking Aurelius, a metric ton of other classical writers. You get so many tropes done right it's astonishing and too effing long to list them all here.
On top of that, there is the picturesque landscape, absolutely gorgeous ships and very accurate portrayal of how life looked back then.
We had to defend that show when it first came out, the actors had to fucking fight homophobic assholes upon the airing of season two (IMAGINE THAT), people who loved it had a hard time going around, although admittedly it's a "fandom" hard time, not a "real life" hard time. We persisted, we persevered, and now we're here, clinging to what's left of our fandom, because we are admittedly all over the place and we don't have "troops" on any one social media, which makes our numbers small in comparison to other fandoms, and makes fandom interactions very limited.
Now imagine that there aired a show... a pirate show promising a lot. And then the show turned out to be an office-type comedy with no lesbian/bi women representation (I may be wrong, but I did watch it out of curiosity, didn't see any, just guys). A show that the whole plot of is just a rendition of the Beauty and the Beast for pirate times with so many historical inaccuracies (couching your crew like a bunch of office workers? Plz. The way they speak and the concepts they talk of that weren't there? It's like they were sitting around a fire, holding hands and singing kumbaya). And don't get me wrong, there's place for those shows as well, and maybe it works for you (and great for you too!).
We tried to ignore it, really we did. We basically gave it the eyebrow-raise-huff-ignore thing that you do on the internet when you want someone to enjoy their stuff and are not interested in it yourself.
But you know what happened? Suddenly there were people on twitter tagging everyone and their dog from Black Sails with renditions of Flint/Izzy (Izzy who comes across as an extreme asshole at best and a homophobic shit at worst and you can't fault people for reading it like this). Let that sink in - our fandom babe Flint, who had his whole life ruined due to homophobia and homophobic assholes is suddenly being shipped with a guy who suspiciously fits the description a bit too much for our tastes. Wouldn't you get angry? Of course you would, we're all very protective of our babes. We are, you are, everyone is. We asked you not to do this, and while I admit that hurling curses your way might not have been the most polite way of asking you to stop, the message was clear enough. What does OFMD fandom do? They all double down. Double fucking down on fanfiction and tagging everything in BS again, pairing Flint and Izzy together, writing things way out of the realm of any possibilities because most of the writers didn't watch BS (I did read their comments on that. They weren't even sorry). If you take such character and throw him into a work of art that can and will be seen as controversial, you should at least have the decency to do your homework on the original work he comes from. Otherwise, to our eyes, you're taking the most wronged man from our beloved show, wronged due to his sexuality, and throw him together with a literal asshole just to see them fuck because they would look pretty (and that's an actual comment from one of the artists, I shit you not). Wouldn't you feel a bit angry about that? I bet you would.
What's worse, people loving Black Sails and not liking OFMD usually point out how narrow the representation is, how improbable the show is and how they're not remotely invested in the plot. It's a cheesy show for your average Sunday afternoon, don't make it into something it's not. It's not a political statement any more than Guess The Tune is.
What's more, when I've seen attempts at people pointing out the obvious flaws in plot, in logic (how many people crew that ship exactly? How is he not dead after being stabbed clean through with a sword?), all we've gotten was "Oh it's not that type of show, OBVIOUSLY", "it's just a comedy, duh" and my personal favorite "you just DON'T UNDERSTAND IT BOOMER". (I'm a late Millennial, thx). Every attempt was chucked out the window. What got me most, tho, was the high praise of OFMD IS THE FIRST SHOW TO [insert whatever queer thing it did supposedly]. No, it's not. There was even a post on twitter that debunked all those claims one by one. I get it, you're happy that you got your gay pirates, good for you. But give credit where credit's due, otherwise you're gonna piss off a lot of people. People who watched our show struggle and crawl so that your show can run today and be fine and accepted widely.
And personally, I felt disappointed watching it because of the lack of representation. Disappointed that Ed turned out to be just as rainbowy as Stede. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against rainbowy, ultra-sweet characters that are big softies. I love them. But not everyone in the lgbtq community is like that. Actually, it's the minority. There are your sweets, there are your glittery rainbows, but the majority is on the more... inconspicuous part of the scale. And there are edgy people (like myself) who don't like glitter, pink, feathers, fluff and a shitton of other things this show had in abundance. You know what made me wince while watching? When I realized that the only person who I could remotely like for the way they weren't so glittery-rainbowy-sweet was Izzy, and I hated him because he was an asshole. Even Jim got the fluffy af oranges arch. So not my (and others') cup of tea.
So yeah, our recent anger and rabidity is not based solely on one post about an insignificant poll (that you're winning only because our fandom is significantly smaller and most people are dispersed between different sites). It's all those things combined and it's the result of them.
And no, I'm not going to finish it with a "please forgive us if we seem a bit angery, we're coping". Flint wouldn't.

I really cannot make it clear enough that the only people who think Izzy Hands has a massively outsized following in the OFMD fandom are people who aren't paying attention and probably get annoyed by every positive mention of Izzy Hands.
Those of us who do post about him / read fics about him / enthusiastically ship him / whatever are far more likely to quip about how there are whole dozens of us in our corner because that's a hell of lot closer to the reality. But if plain statistics on fics or repeatedly pointing out that tumblr notes are the same people hitting that same reasonable average of double digit reblogs... Idk. Maybe a more descriptive exercise would make this clear?
I'm sorting AO3 by most kudos, looking at OFMD fics with Izzy's character tag (aka the one place he really outstrips the other side characters in numbers). A few observations:
Izzy's name appears in a fic summary for the first time on Fic 6, with "...and Izzy getting disrespected several times." Not much of a mention.
First Izzy/OC ship is Fic 7 (Hell or High Water - a title I recognize but have never read)
First Izzy/Other Character is Fic 17, with Izzy/Lucius, which also appears to be the first Izzy focused fic
Fic 22 is the first appearance of BlackHands as part of a SteddyHands fic
46 Fics in we get the first one Not Technically Ship Tagged with BlackBonnet (a Lucius/Izzy with a "background blackbonnet" tag), and at Fic 63 we get the first Actually Not Ship Tagged with BlackBonnet (a Stizzy fic about bonding over hating Calico Jack).
I think Fic 215 is the first mention of Sam Bellamy? I'm trying to find something specific and it's taking a while...
Oh wait there it is! 216 Fics by Kudos into the "Israel Hands" character tag (out of 7785 total) we have the first BlackHands fic that doesn't have Stede involved. Prior to this there were a lot of BlackBonnet fics, and notable numbers of SteddyHands and Izzy/Lucius. Hell we even hit Izzy/Frenchie and Izzy/Captain Flint before getting to this point.
I'm just really trying to illustrate here that for all the snide accusations and defensive worrying I see about all the sinister Izzy fans trying to make the whole show and fandom about him, "Izzy" content (which this ought to demonstrate is hardly all about Izzy) is just not that overwhelming. Izzy content that excludes or ignores the Revenge crew even less so. Like, run this exercise with any side character and you'll get pretty similar results - seeing as the dominance of BlackBonnet above all else is still ridiculous by fandom standards - but that's kinda the point.
Izzy is a popular side character, which is a thing that tends to happen when side characters get speaking time, characterization, camera focus, exploration of their current and potential relationships (conflict counts), etc. You know, things that Izzy gets a bunch of as an antagonist? Izzy having more content than Oluwande is not really more weird than Oluwande having more content than Buttons or Wee John? I'm not going to pretend that fandom spaces don't drop the ball on content for characters of color pretty often, but the tagged content breakdown in this fandom is not far off from what you would expect by character descriptions alone.
Like the list goes Cool Protagonist / Love Interest -> POV Protagonist -> Live-In Primary Antagonist -> Side Fun Guy with a Death Cliffhanger / Fanfic Gap Ending -> Side Pirate Assassin with a Subplot -> Assassin's Side Love Interest... I mean, maybe Lucius is a bit higher than Jim even for what "Lucius in the walls" fics can account for, or Lucius / Izzy have a bit bigger of a lead than they would without white identifying bias, but that's like? Unprovable speculation at best???
Not remotely comparable to, like, "Star Wars Sequel Trilogy" where Kylo Ren is 46.3% of fics while the two non-white protagonists are only in 35.7% (Poe) or 29% (Finn). Like Poe is technically behind Hux's 35.9%, which is absurd for a secondary antagonist no matter how fun I found his blatant evil. It's like if Chauncey Badminton was neck and neck with Jim or even Edward. That is a content percentage you should question, and the numbers might be worse in "Star Wars - All Media Types" (though Kylo does at least lose to Obi Wan).

TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME
Tagged by @santabarbara-skies, aaayyyy! I hardly get tagged so yaaaaaay!
Also this is kind of hard, but I’ll try (and like Em, I’m adding explanations, sort-of-kind-of, but not fancy formatting because I’m lazy).
The West Wing. Still my all-time favorite. Is it idealistic? Sure. Is it preachy sometimes? Yeah. But does it make my bleeding liberal heart glow and hopeful? You bet. Do I want to hug a pillow whenever someone says, “A guy falls in a hole...” or “What’s next?” or “Babies come with hats.” or “He loves teams, I love him so much” or almost-anything-CJ-or-Sam-says? Almost always. So, yeah, it’ll always top my list.
Tumblr media
Psych. Burton Guster, my beloved. I started this show for two reasons: Dule Hill was in it and I just finished the West Wing and needed to keep that connection going; and it a Sherlock Holmes adaptation-sort-of, and I am basically on board for almost anything that is loosely modeled on Holmes. But I stayed for, oh, god, all of it. The two idiots at the center of it all, for Shawn and Juliet, for Lassie, for the bond between Lassie and Juliet, for everything. It is just an absolute delight, come on, son, jerk chicken, Pluto, suck it, meeeeeee, incarcerated in a blueberry, TT Showbiz, MC ClapYoHandz, I would rather fill-in-the-blank, pineapples, Banana as in Bananarama, you know that’s right.
Tumblr media
Friends. Another one that’s definitely dated and contains plenty of sexist, fatphobic, homophobic, and other problematic content. But I have a huge soft spot for this show and would still be one of my desert island shows, if not my #1 desert island show, because it makes me laugh every. single. time. It’s not my favorite show, but it’s the one that makes me feel the most, I don’t know...home? Like I’m going back to this place that isn’t perfect, but somewhere I grew up and so it means a lot to me. And a lot of it really is still funny and adorable and heartwarming, you know?
Tumblr media
Ripper Street. Another one that has Sherlock Holmes vibes, but also includes my favorite handsome man, Matthew Macfadyen. Plus, period drama goodness, with an excellent cast overall, great acting, good writing, and a great ending that’s bittersweet but fitting and satisfying. The character arcs are just fabulous. There are lots of hats and vests. And dry dark humor. And moments that will break your heart to pieces. But others that will give you life. Probably one of the most underrated shows on this whole list, if not the most underrated. Plus the fandom is (still) lovely. Seriously one of the nicest, best fandoms I’ve ever been a part of.
Tumblr media
House MD. The one that started it all for me, and by “it all” I mean my leap into internet fandom communities. So it’s quite special to me. I was one of the only House/Stacy fans on the planet, I think, but that’s how it goes. And more importantly: the friends I made because of this show! The fics I wrote! (Eden in particular, still one of my favorites I’ve ever written for any fandom.) The fics I read! Plus the show itself is my cup of tea, being yet another Sherlock Holmes-esque (Holmes--Homes--House) story on this list. Hugh Laurie just kills it every damn time (although, much like Macfadyen, I just...can’t get used to and actually really hate his American voice/accent, just no, please stop, please just speak in your normal voice, please). The only downside is that it doesn’t have a ton of rewatch value for me, but maybe one day I’ll get back to it again.
Tumblr media
Black Sails. Another awesome period drama that was/is criminally underrated and under-watched. This. Show. Y’all. If you haven’t seen it, just see it. It’s got everything. The characters, so deliciously flawed but sympathetic and layered! Jack my favorite sassy ratboi captain. Flint, everyone’s favorite murder husband. Tits! Fruit! Oh, the production value is gorgeous, the ladies are badass, and it’s just a romp. Watch it.
Tumblr media
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Heeeey, another period piece, dramedy this time, though. And one of the more female-centric shows on my list. It’s hilarious, plain and simple. Jewish culture is everywhere in it, which I adore and appreciate. Tony Shalhoub as Abe Weissman and Alex Borstein as Susie Myerson are nothing short of brilliant in it. I love Lenny, but only because I love historical shows that weave in real people (I’m not a Lenny/Midge fan, sorry; I was rooting for Benjamin, even though I didn’t think it would pan out). I can’t wait to see how the series ends. I’ve loved every minute of it.
Tumblr media
The Mindy Project. My guilty pleasure show, and I shouldn’t feel that guilty about it. A show about a successful doctor who struggles to find love and herself in the big city? Yes, please. It’s sweet. It’s absolutely hilarious. Mindy Kaling is so relatable sometimes it hurts (in a good way). I wish I had her entire wardrobe, it’s amazing. Even the supporting cast is adorable and endearing and you just want to hug all of them and tell them they’re doing great, sweeties. It’s a super-sweet pick-me-up show, just a joy.
Tumblr media
And I tag...whoever. Here are a couple: @houseocats @olivelune @scienceoftheidiot @deelaundry @hondagirll

As a fellow lover of books and black sails, do you have any book recommendations that give off black sails vibes or just seem like something a person who loves the show would love to read? Thank you either way!
Yes!!!!!
First of all, last year I actually made a whole page/post of exactly this, so definitely check that out! (That's two different links and I suspect you'll have better luck with the first link on desktop than mobile, but it's the same stuff in either place.)
Then here are some books I've been meaning to add to the list since then and hadn't gotten around to:
A Clash of Steel by C.B. Lee – a total reimagining of Treasure Island as a queer romance about Chinese and Vietnamese girls and women. I loved this book! Two particular characters from the original were merged into one character which never would have occurred to me and it was SUCH a good reveal.
The Last Smile in Sunder City by Luke Arnold – It’s by Luke Arnold.
When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill – About women (especially queer and otherwise nonconforming women) in the 1950s refusing to be silenced and controlled. And they’re dragons.
The Arabian Nights – I recommend the new(ish) version translated by Yasmine Seale and annotated by Paolo Lemos Horta, which is enormous but really interesting. This is a really foundational text that has consciously or unconsciously influenced a lot of other stories over a long time, and I don’t think it’s a leap to guess that Treasure Island, Black Sails, and some of the other books on my list are among them. Plus, here’s a quote from the introduction that might give off some familiar vibes: “Every story in the global canon of fantastical literature is in some way a vessel shipwrecked on the rocks of its misinterpretation… Assessed in these terms, One Thousand and One Nights is perhaps the greatest and most sprawling ruin of them all.”
Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown – Some poor bastard finds himself stuck as the cook on a pirate ship, gets his leg amputated, and falls in love with the ruthless captain. Hmm.
A Conspiracy of Truths and A Choir of Lies by Alexandra Rowland – Explores the roles of storytellers in society through the misadventures of really fascinating unreliable narrators.
And the recent reads that prompted the post I think you're responding to were The Drowning Empire trilogy (beginning with The Bone Shard Daughter) - a very compelling fantasy series which I initially picked up primarily because the covers look kind of like the Black Sails intro sequence - and Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco, which yes! I did look at entirely because it had Silver in the title. It's a vampire book and it has some weaknesses BUT it's a polyamorous romance which counts for a lot. Plus I've been resisting reading Flint and Mirror by John Crowley which. has Flint in the title.
Hope this helps!

This month’s list features books where the sea plays an important role.  I tried to include a variety of books that felt different in their tone and genre. So I hope you like it! And thanks to someone in last month’s survey for suggesting this topic :)
As always, please vote for which one we should read next using the link at the end of this post.
The Sea, the Sea - by Iris Murdoch
Tumblr media
Charles Arrowby, leading light of England's theatrical set, retires from glittering London to an isolated home by the sea. He plans to write a memoir about his great love affair with Clement Makin, his mentor both professionally and personally, and to amuse himself with Lizzie, an actress he has strung along for many years. None of his plans work out, and his memoir evolves into a riveting chronicle of the strange events and unexpected visitors--some real, some spectral--that disrupt his world and shake his oversized ego to its very core.
Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson
Tumblr media
Following the death of bloodthirsty buccaneer Captain Flint, young Jim Hawkins finds himself with the key to a fortune - he has discovered a map that will lead him to the fabled Treasure Island. But a gang of villains, wild beasts and deadly swashbucklers stand between him and the stash of gold. Not to mention the most infamous pirate ever to sail the high seas . .
The Summer Book, by Tove Jansson
Tumblr media
An elderly artist and her six-year-old granddaughter while away a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. Gradually, the two learn to adjust to each other's fears, whims and yearnings for independence, and a fierce yet understated love emerges - one that encompasses not only the summer inhabitants but the island itself, with its mossy rocks, windswept firs and unpredictable seas.
Solaris, by Stanislaw Lem
Tumblr media
In Solaris, Kris Kelvin arrives on an orbiting research station to study the remarkable ocean that covers the planet’s surface. But his fellow scientists appear to be losing their grip on reality, plagued by physical manifestations of their repressed memories. When Kelvin’s long-dead wife suddenly reappears, he is forced to confront the pain of his past - while living a future that never was. Can Kelvin unlock the mystery of Solaris? Does he even want to?
The Salt Path, by Raynor Winn
Tumblr media
Just days after Raynor learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their home and livelihood is taken away. With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall. They have almost no money for food or shelter and must carry only the essentials for survival on their backs as they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. Yet through every step, every encounter, and every test along the way, their walk becomes a remarkable journey

Black Sails - Captain Flint’s reading list.
Books are a key point of the storytelling in the first two seasons of Black Sails.  They help to reveal various aspects of characters and their relationships.  Being the nerd that I am, I decided to create a reading list based on Captain James Flint’s key books.
Tumblr media
Not only did I bother to compile this short list, but I’m actually reading the books in the list.
The list in sort of the order that they are introduced to the viewer.
De Jure Belli Ad Pace - tr. On the Law of War and Peace by Hugo Grotius.  Published in 1625.  This is the first book Silver sees in Flint’s cabin.  Grotius was a well rounded Dutch intellectual who contributed to many fields but this piece in particular laid down a clear framework for [western] international law.  It is pretty easy to find used copies of this but it is split it up into three books and annoyingly not all online booksellers label it well.
Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes.  Published in 1651.  One of the two books on Flint’s desk that are partially illuminated by the lantern.  Important modern philosopher, interesting spelling inconsistencies (dude, decide if you want to say ‘we’ or ‘wee’) and clearly doesn’t have a great opinion on humanity but has great random quotes.  Like ‘of accidents of bread in cheese’.  However, holy crap, if you think what James struggles with in regard to war/civilization/pardons/human nature.  Yeah - spot on for Flint’s excellent character.
Free as an ebook or easy to find used copies or new.
The Republic by Plato(n).  ~375 BC.  This is the book underneath Leviathan and took me way more time to figure out than I’d like to admit.  Mainly, I could only make out the letters of ‘ton - he - public’ for each line on the spine of the book with the crappy lighting and not enough time from the camera shot to get a better look.  I wondered if the public was part of something else but thrown off by the ton in the author name until I figured out that Plato went by Platon and then I knew it had to be a translation of The Republic.
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Published 167.  By one of the most famous Roman stoics and Emperors.  James’ most precious book due to who gave it to him and how it likely helped him try to take perspective in situations.
It is easy to find free ebooks, though I’m reading one of the older English language translations to be closer to 1715.  Overall, a very enjoyable read.  I may seek out one of the newer translations. La Galatea by Miguel de Cervantes. 1585 tr by Gordon Willoughby James Gyll in 1867.  This is the only English version I can find and describes it as a ‘pastoral romance’.  Miranda gave James the original version of Don Quixote to read and this book is his way to apologize to her when he left Nassau angry at her.  It takes some digging around to find the English version of this - Spanish copies are much more numerous and I couldn’t find an English ebook.
I’m not including Don Quixote b/c I just can’t seem to read that book.  All my previous attempts have failed so I’m not going to use it to understand Thomas Hamilton.  I also don’t know which Middleton play James gave to Miranda - he just said, “Middleton, I thought you’d like it.” and then smiled all proud of himself while bandaged drinking tea.
So there you have it.  Captain Flint’s season 1 and 2 reading list.

Wrote a response to a fic prompt, "write this in your style" from @breannasfluff prompt, "Purah's List" if you want to check it out.
This fic is also on AO3! It'll have the collections link as well, so you can check out the other fics people have written, along w/ the original prompt from Breanna.
It's a bit lengthy, so I'll put it under the read more. Please let me know what you think :)
I wrote from the Champion's point of view, but there's a bit of foolishness from the others at the edges.
It’s late morning in Hateno, the nine swordsmen circling around Purah’s table in the tech lab.
“I need all of this by sundown. All of it, from all nine of you. It’s a matter of life and death.” Purah says, with utmost seriousness.
They take turns looking at the list of items, and looking at each other, as they pick and choose who’s bringing back what.
Wind peeks at it, sarcastically asking, “Yeah? So what happens if we’re late, we die?”
Purah fondly rolls her eyes, as she’s standing on the table so she’s taller than him. “Oh please, I’d bring you back.”
Wind’s eyes widen, smirking and calling her bluff. “Oh, so you can just give someone life after death?”
Warriors snorts, commenting as he stretches his arms. “Pfft. Life after death is as improbable as sex after marriage—oww!“ his sentence gets cut off by Time, giving him a glare, and Twilight swatting the captain in the back of the head, with the sailor laughing in the background.
So they all take their pick from Purah’s list, getting themselves ready for their challenge.
The door of Purah’s lab swings shut behind Wild, as he ambles past the warp circle, digging a pen out of his travel pack. He hears the soft creeeak…thump as the old heavy door opens and shuts again, the sound of old boots softly crunching gravel behind him.
“Sixteen potlids, huh…” the Rancher starts, in his easygoing drawl.
Wild looks up from scribbling his list of ‘Goron spice’ and ‘Chuchu jelly’ on the back of his hand, to glance at him. Wild gives him a look, knowing he’s about to say some choice shit. He hears the rancher continue, a teasing lilt to his words.
“…Do you even have that many in the population to—“
Wild cuts off the rancher’s words by swatting Twilight on the arm, “Oh shut up, go off and sniff some grass or something!” The champion retorts back, making him howl in laughter.
The champion swats him again, going for a playful kick in the calf, when Twilight catches him, ramming into his torso, arms gripping him and pushing, with the strength of his goats back home.
Their brief arm-swatting-turned-schoolyard sumo wrestling tussle gets cut off by the Veteran walking out of the lab next, squinting at the sun, and then them, before shaking his head as he keeps walking.
“What’d you have to get, Vet?” Twilight asks, still smiling as he follows Legend down the hill path, holding Wild’s head and neck in a chokehold under his arm, taking Wild with them down the road.
“Ah—uh. Three flint stones and one...luminous stone?” He trails off in his answer. “Purah was saying there’s a Talus by Ginner woods….wherever that is.” He finishes, brushing his pinkish hair out of his eyes, fixing his hat back on over his blond roots.
“Oh! Yeah! Ginner’s not even half a mile out the village, on your right, just go a bit past it, in the…north west-ish…direction. There’s a talus there…dunno if it’ll have luminous stone though. It might.”
Wild explains, through a slightly strained voice, still in Twilight’s chokehold, wriggling and pushing the bulkier man to his best efforts, to no success.
The veteran laughs at the sight, giggling as he walks down the path ahead of them, his Pegasus boots giving him the slightest bit of a faster stride.
Twilight finally lets go of Wild, yelling after Legend with “Don’t forget the Chuchu jelly!” getting a friendly middle finger in return, making his heart warm with the beloved jackass behavior.
Wild composes himself, checking his hand to make sure his list isn’t smudged, as he purposely steps on the back heel of Twilight’s boots as they walk downhill, getting one last shot in.
He fixes his long hair back into a loose tail, redoing his hair tie, as he speaks. “…Anyway. You should be able to find some good amount of lids here. If not, there’s most likely some at the monster camps outside town, or Kakariko’s like…not too far away, on four legs.” Wild advises, turning back at the lab, seeing the traveler and their blacksmith come out next, the traveler swinging a bucket in his hand, and Four tying his hair back, looking mildly perplexed.
They make it to the bottom of the hill, Wild getting an encouraging pat on the back from Twilight, before splitting ways.
Just a couple things to grab. Easy. Wild could do all this in his underwear, and only a rusty axe and a tree branch on him. In fact, he probably has.
Wild taps his fingers rhythmically on his thigh, idly and mindlessly alternating fingers in a fast tempo, as he laps around Hateno a couple times. He asks around about the merchant caravan, using his usual intel source of Nebb and Karin, though the two kids don’t know anything. He does get shown a cool iridescent worm that Karin found though.
He spends five minutes poking and playing around with the worm with the two kids before he remembers he actually has some responsible shit to do, and excuses himself, waving at them as he keeps walking.
Unfortunately, either the gossip circle at the laundry basin was wrong, or that merchant caravan from Eldin is quicker than he would’ve thought. The caravan isn’t here, and Pruce from the produce store didn’t get any spice.
The champion blows out a puff of air in frustration, leaning against the beam of the Hateno main gate.
He doesn’t have his slate, still being repaired by Purah. So he can’t just warp somewhere….
But it’s a risky gamble if any nearby merchants would even have Goron spice, this side of Hyrule….he may have to get it the hard way…
…Shit.
The champion does one last desperate search around Hateno, with the same results. He even digs through his shelves and cabinets in his house across the bridge, hoping to the three spirits that he’s not just wasting his time.
….He wasted his time, he found nothing.
Wild heads out of his house, locking his door, when Bolson calls out from his lounge spot by the cooking pot, lounging in the shade.
“Looking for Zelda, dear? I think she said she was traveling to the Domain for a few days, she left a day or so ago.” He says, his tone lilting and floaty, squinting at Wild under his eyeshadow.
Wild waves him off. “No Bolson, but thanks for letting me know why she wasn’t home. I’m actually looking for spice but we don’t have any.”
Bolson, quick as a whip, answers back as Wild starts to cross the bridge.
“Well you’ll have to talk to your lady about that—“
“What…?—wait—no! No, that’s— Bolson!” The champion sputters, caught off guard by Bolson’s teasing dirty joke, as the older man cackles, tilting back in his spot on the grass. The older man adjusts his position, waving him off as he continues lounging in the shade, as Link’s house has the best of it.
Wild, red and flustered, speed walks his way back to Hateno’s main gate. He waves to Thadd as he exits, spotting Sky a bit away, peeking around a tree, looking at a beehive a few trees away, squinting like he’s going to snipe it. Or trying to mentally control the bees….Whichever, Wild has faith in him.
Wild’s getting his breathing ready to start the run to Eldin until he can grab a horse, when hears the faint sound of the earth falling apart, with tremors under his feet.
The veteran must have found the stone talus. He doesn’t hear cussing yet, but he does hear faint sounds of battle, so he figures Legend is okay. It’s not one of the senior taluses, or anything elemental, so it should be nothing more than a workout for him.
He sends a mental wish of luck to him, and gets moving.
The champion’s running at a good pace, controlling his breathing, wondering how he’ll get Goron spice in time before sundown. He stops before the monster fort camp near the hill, catching his breath.
He watches the moblins and bokoblins stalk around, some on some patrol path, others looking like their squabbling over a stack of boxes.
…Wait. Maybe…
Wild checks his shield’s condition. A little banged up, but it should work…if he gets it right on the first couple tries. His bow and arrows are sturdy on his back.
He takes a deep breath, and gets climbing up the near rock hill, staying out of sight of the camp.
He checks the sun, guessing the rough estimate of time. He faces the right way, seeing his shadow doesn’t point towards noon yet, so he’s not doing too terribly on time. He crouches, his eyes following the red moblin, as it circles and stalks closer…and closer…almost…
There. Now!
Wild takes one last breath, and sprints, drawing his shield. He gets good airtime, planting his feet on the straps of his shield, drawing his bow. It feels like time slows as he aims for contact on the Moblins left shoulder, pointing north-northwest.
Perfect.
He feels his boots and shield drop against the shoulder of the moblin, monster screams and snarls with indignance and offense as Wild gets bounced off.
The bounce gets him good airtime, sending him far as he reaches the highest he’ll get, snapping his paraglider open, the champion’s shoulders flaring in protest briefly as the fabric and wind resistance yanks and pulls.
He takes time to laugh like a madman, yelling “I still got it!!”  as he glides past Necluda towards Eldin.
Wild thankfully has enough energy today, and got enough height in the air to make it to Foothill stable, crashlanding and dragging his feet, faceplanting into the dirt. If he remembers right, there should be a Goron salesman, or someone around here carrying Goron spice…
He asks around and searches for about half an hour, sitting and resting a bit, drinking water. Today, it seems, the world must have it out for him. No one has any, after checking with Ozunda at the counter, then Beedle, then any poor traveling merchant unlucky enough to make eye contact with him. He probably sounds like he’s losing it, asking for Goron spice like it’s his lost child.
“Hey! Ozunda, anyone come by with Goron spice?”
“Nah, S.O.L buddy, I’d tell ya if I knew, though.”
The champion heads into the stable, towards the den area.
“Damn it…Beedle, any Goron spice?”
“No, my friend! Just arrows and fireproof horned lizards….you want your usual stock of arrows though?”
“Damn…no, I’m good, thanks though.”
“….Are. Are you sick…?....You don’t need more arrows…?” Beedle asks, looking at him with a raised eyebrow, silently calling his bluff, holding his bag open like he knows Wild is going to cave.
Then Beedle starts again, sounding nice, but with the vibe of a viper before it strikes.
“…You always need more arrows, Link…”
Wild buys more arrows, wiping the sweat from his brow and shaking off the chill from his spine.
He leaves up the Death Mountain trail, snagging a fireproof elixir with his remaining rupees, waiting until absolutely necessary to drink it.
An hour’s hike finds him hauling ass past the dismantled guardian remains up the trail, panting and sweating, already feeling the sunburn on his cheeks and back of his neck.
He gets to a stopping point, hands on his knees, trying to bring air into his dry throat, coughing as it’s almost too dry to swallow. Wild grimaces as he licks his lips, tasting sweat from above his upper lip.
He pops open the elixir, drinking it, hoping it’ll last long enough to get in, buy the Goron spice, and leave. Or combust into flames, whichever happens first.
He drinks it all, ignoring the texture, and ignoring the fact that multiple people, several times, have told him ‘Link, that’s a topical cream!’ or ‘Link, don’t drink it, it’s for your skin, I think it’s toxic to be consumed—‘
Haters, all of them. If it works, it works, he thinks.
He runs and hikes up the mountain pass, the next hour feeling like it’s being stretched out, and the heat making his body feel like it’s being pulled towards the earth. His steps getting harder and harder to pick up. He’s starting to fear that elixir wasn’t strong enough…
Finally, finally. He gets to Goron city.
Wild stumbles up the path, skin and clothing drenched in sweat, near falling onto the store counter, panting.
“Please….please….sell me something…Goron spice…”
The Goron merchant watches him for a second, his eyes wide like he’s witnessing something of terror. He grabs a scooper, filling a jar Wild hands him with the spice, as Wild sells a few chunks of rock salt and amber, to pay for the amount of spice sold by weight, along with having some rupees of his own after getting shaken down by Beedle. He buys two more fireproof elixers, downing one, and storing the other, checking the duration first. He heads back down the trail, heat-dazed, red-faced, and damp from sweat, his hair frizzy and partially undone from the gliding and running.
The champion dips his fingers into the hotspring nearby, to help tame and redo his hair, sighing as he still feels himself bake in the sun, but it’s more of a bask now, rather than feeling like someone buttered him up and threw him on a grill like a stalk of corn.
He’s ambling down the path when he snipes a Fire Chuchu with an arrow, for looking at him wrong. He almost leaves the remains be, when he remembers he needs Chu jelly as well, cussing and stomping as he scoops it into another jar. To add onto it, he isn’t careful enough and the jelly almost spills, flaring to burn his arm.
“Hhhsss---ooww—fuck!” He hisses, shutting the jar tight.
If Purah has any issue with it being not plain, she can deal. It might even be cooler than what the others find.
It’s late in the afternoon, almost evening, as he gets back to Foothill stable. He takes out his fastest horse, a constantly antsy appaloosa mare. Her hooves are already trotting and kicking in place, waiting for Wild’s go ahead. He barely finishes his signal when she takes off down the road like lightning struck her, Wild holding onto the reigns, choking out a curse.
Thankfully, she doesn’t like following paths, similar to her rider, bolting through the Lanayru wetlands soon enough. And if Link didn’t know any better, he’d say she ran that Lizalfos over on purpose.
He pats her flank, hoping at least the others had an easier time getting their odd items on Purah’s scavenger hunt from hell.
Wild steers his horse into Hateno just in time, reigning in her manic energy, petting her and calming her as he guides her into the pen by his house. He fills the troughs, and triple locks the gate, only because he knows the horse won’t jump the fence, but she likes to try and kick the lock and break it out of spite, even if she doesn’t leave. His mood is lifted a bit after just being on his horse, and from the fact he was able to find what he needed, still technically before sundown.
Wild shuffles up the path of the tech lab, his boots crunching the dirt up the hill, sunburnt like a lobster, and the burn still stinging a bit on his arm. He runs into Legend and Four, walking with them into the lab tower, trickling in with the rest of the group.
Purah has them set their things down, the champion thunks down the Goron spice on the counter with a grin, and the jar of the red Chu jelly. He elbows Twilight in the ribs in good nature, seeing the full count of sixteen potlids. Though he does have to cover his snort when Twilight all but body slams a still living Chuchu out of his wolf pelt.
“What, did you make friends with it or something?”
“Oh shut up, you look like you cooked yourself and forgot the seasoning.”
“Yeah and you look like you got a nice right hook in the eye, did you try and flirt with it or—“
“Alright, alright, settle.” Purah hollers at them, going down her list of the rest of the items. Each one of them surrenders their burden, and piles the Chu jelly collection onto the lab table, on a collection tray to prevent any from rolling or spilling off.
Poor Sky and Hyrule look like they stung, soaked, rolled in leaves, and then steamed over a low heat. Wild decides not to ask. It’ll come up over dinner later.
The captain looks….oh Din have mercy is that goat sh—
“It’s mud.” Warriors says, bluntly, looking no one in the eye.
The old man looks like he fought a whole hen house. He probably did. Time places the egg, pristine, no cracks, gently onto the table, stepping back, shifting his weight, looking like he just moved a chess piece that would decide his life or death.
After all is said and done, Wild finds not only is his Sheikah Slate not even recalibrated yet, but their nonsensical scavenger hunt was just errands.
‘Just like old times’ All the Links think at once, thinking of their past sidequests on their respective journeys.
The champion looks to Purah, internally wanting nothing more than food, a bath, and a story of what the hell Hyrule and Sky were doing, when he speaks.
“…So what’s this all for? What’s important…?”
Purah looks up over her glasses, tinkering with his slate.
“Oh, I didn’t say? Impa’s visiting tomorrow.”
It takes every ounce of Wild’s willpower to not ask what in Farosh’s green earth what all this stuff is for in relation to Impa. He wants to. So badly.
A loud fwump is heard through the room, as Legend sits heavily on the ground, throwing his cap off and resting a short staff on his lap, looking like he just did an eight hour shift in a fighting ring.
All nine leave the lab, with a promise from Purah that the slate will be fixed before they have to leave, as they shuffle down the hill, to hopefully end their night.
It’s quiet, and peaceful, despite their appearances and general presence as they all stagger through the village.  The cool night air coming from Mount Lanayru, and the breeze from the coast of Hateno bay act as a soothing balm on their skins.
Until the sailor pipes up, in middle of their group.
“…So…you think miss Purah would mind if a couple of those dynamite sticks were missing..?”

10 First Lines
Thanks for the tag @eveningalchemist! (I added rules from the game as I've seen it before)
Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (or however many you have) posted fics and see if there's a pattern!
There were few things that would draw Captain Flint ashore to the colonies, once the war had begun. (If It Was You)
“‘We’ stopped being a thing of any relevance about an hour ago,” Silver snaps, more harshly than he intends. (What Lies Beneath)
Silver has all but lost count of the number of times he’s saved Flint today, and he can’t help but feel that a bit of gratitude is in order. (Princes of the New World)
The first time Flint saw the princess with a familiar-looking book, he let it go. (By Faith of my Body)
Marcus doesn't think of the other man in the room when he touches himself. (The Smoke of Their Torment) [fandom: the exorcist TV]
At first, after Silver talks his way back onto the crew of the Walrus as Randall’s caretaker, he is just thankful to be alive. (Gentille Alouette)
Flint rides away from Miranda’s house faster than necessary, full of barely repressed energy. (Spit-Roasted)
John Silver was not hiding. (It Only Made Me Real)
I thought I knew what hunger was, before I left Weatherly. (announcing your place in the family of things) [fandom: fetch phillip archives]
Silver watches the Spanish lieutenant carefully as he unrolls the bundle of cruel looking implements he’s brought. (Another Way) [the first-first line of this was show dialogue with nothing added so i didn't count it]
In terms of patterns - With a few exceptions, I tend to start with a broad declarative statement; something that touches on themes, and/or sets the stage a bit. I know the current done thing is to start in the middle of action or dialogue, or with quite specific description, and then back up. But when I read I like to start at the beginning and be oriented to what is happening up front, and I try to write as I like to read.
I didn't include the kinkmeme ones on here because they're still anon, but they fit the pattern lol.
No pressure tags @queer-crusader @posallys @frau-kali @jaynovz @francisthegreat and open tag for anyone else who wants to participate

Clarifying q, is Captain Flint meant to be from Treasure Island or Black Sails? I only ask because the post with the names all listed out says “James Flint” as he’s named in Black Sails, in Treasure Island I *think* he’s only referred to as “Flint” (and is not a character so much as someone referenced).
I'm not sure I understand well what's the source of the confusion here
Captain Flint is for Treasure Island, as I specified on the very poll and also in the tags ? Indeed, I couldn't remember him being called James in the book (but I wouldn't have bet on it). There's also a pic of the book to make it clear.
In the list, which is about characters with several submissions which doesn't have to go through the prelims round, I wrote James Flint for the Black Sails' character to separate him from the Flint he's inspired by but I can precise that.
I haven't read Treasure Island in a long time (truth is, I've never enjoyed it even if it's probably not the right place to admit that) but I side with you - Flint is more of a legend than anything else in TI. Whether it disqualifies him or not is your, voters, choice.
If something's still unclear, please feel free to message me again. I've opened my inbox for that kind of stuff

Silverflint Bathing Fic Rec List
So I realized I had most of this rec list already compiled because I really like reading about the Pirate Lads getting squeaky clean. So here ya go!
--
All Our Yesterdays by trill_gutterbug:
Summary: “It might do you good to stop wallowing in your own filth,” Flint replies. “Although just as likely you’d dissolve completely.”
Silver shakes his head. “If you haven’t, I certainly won’t.”
Flint opens his hand invitingly. “Come find out.”
Silver regards him thoughtfully for a long moment. “We won’t fit.”
Flint adjusts himself, sitting up straighter. He lifts one dripping leg onto the edge of the rim, opening a vee of space in the water. “There’s room.”
Bathed by twofronteethstillcrooked:
Summary: An itch had caused him to reach back to scratch. His fingers came away red as the pain shot like cannon fire across his shoulder.
Silver went pale as he rushed nearer. “You told me you weren’t injured.”
Flint shrugged. “I didn’t think I was.”
Silver seemed to be clenching his teeth hard enough to crack rock. His nostrils flared. “We should see to it before you head much further inland.” He sounded like someone Flint did not want to test on the matter.
what the water gave me by youatemytailor:
Summary: "Captain," Silver says, firmly, like this is the most important discussion they have ever had, "Come here now and let me smell your goddamned hair."
Aftermath by Thiebes:
Summary: It had only been days without Silver in front of him, but Flint couldn't take his eyes away.
Flint gives Silver a bath after being captured by Israel Hands.
I wish for once we could stay gold by jaynovz:
Summary: Madi has discovered that pirates truly are a grimy bunch, but her two have managed to keep fairly clean the last few months when they had access to fresh water.
The governor’s mansion is filled with bustle, men scurrying about, seeking answers from both Captain Flint and their new King, but there is time enough to steal them away. Time enough this evening for some respite, to cleanse the grief and violence from the last few days alongside the dirt.
the only way out is the way back in by samedifference61:
Summary: And Silver obviously means to further agitate Flint’s state when he says, “Do you know what she said to me this morning? She said, ‘I cannot understand why the two of you have not been intimate yet.’”
a shared bath, a conversation about death, and a promise
A State of Undress by mycapeisplaid:
Summary: It's not everyday you get to undress your Captain.
Note: Specifically chapter four for the bathing, but the whole series is great :))
from whence we came and to where we shall go by princesskay:
Summary: Only a starving man could be this hungry -- this recklessly wanton.
Our Longed-For Bed by mapped:
Summary: Flint wishes for something he may call home again. Perhaps Silver is that something.
Surety by Magnetism_bind:
Summary: After Silver's finally returned from the sea Flint has to deal with his feelings.
Here there is liberation by frau_kali:
Summary: The water was cool against his skin, making him shiver, probably visibly. He touched the sponge against the area around his stump, doing his best not to wince. The water always helped, always lessened the pain.
“I'd be careful not to waste a single drop of that, if I were you,” Flint spoke up from his desk, making notes in his log. He hadn't looked at Silver since his quartermaster had removed his clothing. Probably too distracting, Silver thought, with a twist of newfound pride. - In which Silver teases Flint, is teased in return, and begins to discover a thing he didn't know he wanted. Oh, and also hair washing and pulling :)
Princes of the New World by x_etoile_x:
Summary: “This is your plan?” Flint sneers, looking at Silver like he’d expected no better. “Hiding below decks like a rat?”
“Now Captain, that’s unkind,” Silver pouts, trying to hide his hurt behind teasing reproach. All day he has tried to match Flint, to fight alongside him though he is ill-suited to it, and it has earned him nothing but disdain. Now it’s time to do things his way for a while. “Like a stowaway, at least.” --- After they have taken the warship and been cast out of the crew, Flint and Silver are forced to contend with each other and the nature of their relationship.
Note: Bathing specifically in chapter 4, but the whole series this belongs to, our feast is but beginning, is top tier, highly recommend.
--
As always, hit me up if there is a fic you think I’ve missed! <3 <3
