a bit silly, but if you had to fill an Avengers roster, who would you pick?
Wooof, oh me oh my. Let's lay down some ground rules before I do this. 1). Only people who have been Avengers at some previous point in time. Doesn't narrow it down a LOT but this list would be a jigsaw of my favorite Z-Listers otherwise 2). Limiting it to seven people. That's the magic number with superhero teams and it gives me a reason to stop
Tumblr media
Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America: Sometimes you just cannot beat a classic and when it comes to Avengers line ups there is no one that I think is more integral than Captain America. The pathos that he brings to the table no matter what character he is interacting with is palpable and reading through his first big volume has given me a deep respect and love for the character. He's our leader for sure, the axis of solid, steady service I can hang my weirder picks on.
Tumblr media
Dr. Walter Newell AKA Stingray: You all saw this coming and don't act like you didn't. One of my favorite if not my FAVORITE Marvel Characters of all time. He's a doctor with an interesting specialization. His "I'm only a part time superhero" hangup is even funnier and more interesting if forced into the limelight on THE hero team. Not to mention he comes with his own swanky Hydrobase we can use for an HQ and with his wife and four kids running around underfoot we have the kind of domestic adorability I think any good team needs.
Tumblr media
Miguel Santos AKA Living Lightning: The first time I can ever remember reading about a comic book hero being gay, as just like, part of who they are. A tiny detail in their rich inner life. Not to mention the less respect a character gets the more I want to lift them up on my shoulders. He could be the sweetheart with a little chip on his shoulder from not getting the respect his objectively awesome powers objectively deserve.
Tumblr media
Angelica Jones AKA Firestar: Something you may not know about me. The first piece of media that really opened my eyes as to the potential and depth and scope of the Marvel Universe was Spiderman and His Amazing Friends. It was cheesy, it was cheap and yet Angelica was the first character that I felt SPECIAL for knowing and caring about. She's happy, she's passionate, her simple classic costume kicks ass and the New Warriors need their goddamn respect. 'Nuff said.
Tumblr media
Sersi, Just Sersi: What little I have seen of this character fucking FASCINATES me. This woman is chaos incarnate. It's like she is actively making on the fly decisions with everyone she meets whether she's going to kill them, screw them, turn them into a small mammal or some combination of the three. She's *Instant Plot Complication Just Add Water* because she saw a butterfly and that somehow translates to her blowing the entire team's cover.
Tumblr media
Dane Whitman AKA The Black Knight: I love everything about him. I love his vibe, I love the fact that his backstory is built partially around recontextualizing the lore of a mostly forgotten Atlas fantasy comic. I love that he has a wickedly evil cursed blade that comes with the side effect of basically holding him hostage to a heroic moral code. And on top of that he's a dorky intellectual who can't see a social cue if it's blaring at him from oncoming traffic.
Tumblr media
Jennifer Walters AKA She-Hulk: ...I do not feel the need to explain or justify this choice. YOU know Jen is awesome. *I* know Jen is awesome. She-Hulk does not need justification. She shows up in stories and makes them better by existing. Also yes this is the bodytype I'd use. Yes, I have an addiction. No, I don't feel the need to explain that either. RESERVISTS: Characters I really like but either don't know enough about or don't think they make good Avengers
Marc Spector and System AKA Moon Knight: One of my favorite dudes but does NOT play well with others. Was interesting for about 10 seconds as a member of the West Coast team but I'd prefer he never touch the ranks again.
Flint Marko AKA Sandman: Marvel did Sandman fucking dirty by never letting him fully reform and be the good guy. I want Sandman to be the good guy dammit
Maria de Guadalupe Santiago AKA Silverclaw: I know literally nothing about her outside of reference books but her powers are dope and I dig her vibe.

Concept for a Namor solo movie:
To reference the character’s original name in the comics, there’ll be a scene where Namor and his ally (let’s say that it’s Walter Newell aka Stingray, look him up on the wiki) are in a mall and are trying to blend in. At some point, they’re stopped by a police officer who is looking for someone with Namor’s description. The officer asks for ID, which Namor doesn’t have. The officer then asks for Namor’s name, leading to this exchange:
Namor: My name is K’ulk’ukan. But to others, I am known as Namor.
Officer: …uh, okay. Just Namor?
Namor: It means “El-“
Walter Newell: -McKenzie. His full name is Namor McKenzie.
Officer: …okay, wait right here then, Mr. McKenzie.
Namor: (stares at Walter, confused)
Walter Newell: (shrugs)

Though Stingray often works with Namor, he has also come into conflict with Namor.
Marine scientist Walter Newell first appeared in Tales to Astonish 95, but his superhero alter ego, Stingray first appeared in Sub-Mariner 19.

Avengers #262
The Avengers interrupt Namor’s date with Walter Newell AKA Stingray and Diane Arliss-Newell.
Of course he’s feeling “terrible sorrow” Monica, y’all ruined his angling for a threesome.
But to be fair, who wouldn’t want to be part of this:

Submariner Summer 29
Hola hola, todo bien? Lets do #SubmarinerSummer part 29, Tales to Astonish #95: The POWER Of The Plunderer! Got Banner/Hulk and the High Evolutionary on the cover. Go Go Go HULK! Also, Marvel really loves using "A World He Never Made" as a title or tag line
Tumblr media
On the Title page, we catch up with Namor and Dorma still on their way back to Atlantis. And apparently, there's a new underwater city that's popped up! Popped down? A *surfacer* city (eww)! Got Thomas and Raymond Marais on script, and Mr. Everett himself still on art, here inked by Colletta
Tumblr media
Namor is angry at the unmitigated gall of coming to Atlantean territory and just setting up a city...a colony, if you will. Full of white people. 😒
Dorma tries to be the voice of peace...but Namor knows what those people mean when they say peace.
Tumblr media
Namor demands to speak to their leader, but, well, the guards don't actually seem all that interested in talk or peace, actually. But surfacers forever undestimate Namor, so *that* doesn't go well for them.
Can you imagine being that far underwater and mouthing off to the Namor??? When Namor then moves to leave, the surfacer leader finally shows up
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The weird sub belongs to the surfacer leader, Dr. Walter Newell (1st appearance; note it!). He tries to tell Namor the guards weren't really hostile (🙄), and acknowledges he set up his city in Namor's domain, telling him he's there to...take his resources for the surface world 😬😬😬
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, it gets better. When Namor asks why Atlantis should get robbed, Newell replies: the surfacers will definitely offer trade for the natural resources! 😱 Bro literally trying the blankets and beads bit on Atlantis. 💀 Namor though isn't having it, and leaves, rejoining Lady Dorma, when a new player arrives
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Its The Plunderer, a Ka-Zar villain, and true to his name he demands the city surrender and be plundered. Newell tries to intervene in his craft, but it goes terribly wrong, and his city's dome is cracked, the water rushing in. Namor is philosophical, but aloof. Let 'em drown.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then Plunderer starts attacking escape-craft. This makes Namor angry; it is, after all, his turf Plunderer is war crime-ing in. So he attacks Plunderer's sub, and gets let inside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plunderer tries to shoot Namor with his fancy vibra-gun but Namor is too fast for him and makes him pay. However, Plunderer's men are after Dorma, which distracts him long enough for Plunderer to get a shot in
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dorma gets caught in the current of water rushing through the dome and into the city. She's almost crushed, but Newell saves her. Plunderer tosses Namor out of his sub when he realizes he survived the vibro-gun, and he gets to work living up to his name plundering the city
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Namor sees that Newell saved Dorma, and takes her back, expressing gratitude but telling the surfacer to let her go and get lost in no uncertain terms. He takes Dorma to the depths, while Newell gets a ship to rescue his people. Then Namor vows to get Plunderer for what he did after taking Dorma back to Atlantis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So ends this issue, a high action story with a real Silver Age sci-fi vibe in the designs, especially with the subs. This was quite the first appearance for Newell, who we haven't seen the last of and was clearly written to be sympathetic, but wow the colonialism runs deep.
Be that as it may NEXT Submariner hunts the Plunderer and on the way swims into his past in Tales to Astonish #96: Somewhere Stands...Skull Island!

Stingray, A Soft and Simple Shanty
Tumblr media
“Dr. Richards wants that data.” Diane said to me, short dark hair barely falling past the backs of her ears. She was dressed in swirling psychedelic patterns, a base of deep sea green with crescents and reaching coral limbs of red and pink and blue.
“Dr. Richards will get that data. If he wants to find a better way to get a reading of strange mineral deposits several miles down and three hours sail off the coast of Oahu then he can do it himself. Until then, he'll take the time table I give him.” I said, standing up tall.
Diane stopped, a smile kinking up the right side of her lips.
A stark white bodysuit and crimson shorts, boots and gloves. A red strike up the center with a starburst taking up most of my chest and a helmet tucked under one arm with no facial features save for a curved arrow pointing down. The suit's “cape” or “wings” extended down from each arm, segmented with long stripes like the feathers of some titanic sea bird.
“What?” I asked her, smiling as if I didn't already know the answer while she approached me. She set down the clipboard against the bolted down table on the deck of our research boat. She pushed herself up on her tiptoes and kissed me.
I sighed, closing my eyes softly and wrapping my arms around the small of her back. Cursing the suit's environmental seal for not letting me feel her warmth on mine.
“Just thinking about how dashing a figure you cut, Stingray.” She said, taking the helmet out from under my arm. She fitted it over my head gently, clicking both latches shut in one motion. With a shrill little beep the helmet's HUD flashed to light in a squint inducing shade of red that wouldn't be lost against the ocean backdrop.
“'Stingray' is for when I'm doing something unwise around people with guns or who can toss trucks like footballs. Now what you CAN say is that Dr. Walter Newell, savant oceanographer and inventor cuts a dashing figure. Stingray is a part-timer.” I said, sweeping her back up into my arms and getting close. “Your husband is here for every second.” One of my gloved hands reached down over her forearm and laced my fingers into hers, running the tips of my fingers along the gem of her wedding ring. A teardrop of aquamarine in gleaming silver. Yes, Aquamarine. No one can ever accuse “us” superheroes of not being blunt as battering rams.
“When you get back from your day job, Mr. Part-Time. I'd like to take you up on that…” She said as I stepped up on the edge of the boat.
“Mmm, careful. Bad for the ecosystem if I start turning sea water to steam on contact.” I said and thrust my arms out to either side, wings snapping up, glittering red in the sun.
(Here it issss~)

Walter Newell is a character we'd love to see in the next MCU movie about the oceans. We'd also, of course, love to see him in #MCOC @MarvelChampions

the white and red guy hero
That's Stingray, he is a hero and ally of Namor, it's good to see he made it into a game. I haven't played this one. Yeah, Marvel isn't great with showing Namor in other media, but hopefully that will change soon.

however let us not pretend like Namor is perfect to his friends... as we see Stingray stop him right here just to ask Namor what is up... and Namor just straight up wrecks his shit... and remember Stingray isn’t super powered... he is just a scientist in a suit... and he hits that ground HARD.
