After viewing Wakanda Forever again, I think Namor says his catch phrase "Imperius Rex" twice. I could be wrong. But he yells something before throwing the water bombs at Ramonda and the caption just says "speaking Mayan" but I think it's the same as at the end with Shuri.
Can anyone who speaks Yucatec Maya confirm or deny?

Friendly reminder that in the cómics US explorers showed up destroyed Namor's people & homes robbing them of a generation. Raised to want revenge, continued predation of the oceans fuels the rage Namor feels for the surface. It is a prototypical indigenous experience.
That is ultimately the core of Namor.
Wakanda Forever softens the actions of the US and shifts to Spanish colonial genocide, but ultimately the indigenous experience, the rage, is the same. This is worth acknowledging and remembering today.

“I have many names. My people call me K’uk’ulkan, but my enemies call me Namor.” The King of Talokan, reveals himself to the surface world! I loved Namor in @blackpanther #wakandaforever! It was a powerful introduction to a hugely important character that also shines a light on Mesoamerican culture in much the same way that the original showcased African culture. @tenochhuerta absolutely owns this role!
Fingers crossed we see him with the X-Men down the line 🤞

What does Imperius Rex mean?
What does Imperius Rex mean?
Tumblr media
IMPERIUS REX! is a made up battle cry/catchphrase.
Tumblr media
I broke it down a while back:
Imperious & Rex are both latin words and some of Namor’s inspiration is from some Roman-Greek Aesthetics; Bill Everett used Roman > Namor. Ankle Wings based on Hermes. Later on more Roman-Greek Aesthetic would be added in the Silver Age comics by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby.
Imperius is not the correct spelling. However it is spelled this way for most of time, the O was added and then it was dropped again in the 90s, sometimes writers wrote it as Imperius and other times as Imperious. However Imperius is the original way it was written and is widely used.
The first time that we see the now famous catchphrase it was not said but written out in very small letters in Tales to Astonish (1959) #70 published (1965):
Tumblr media
The very first time that the words Imperius Rex were said it was not by Namor but by Lord Vashti in Tales to Astonish (1959) #77 published (1966)

Then in the same comic, by Namor for the first time:

Then by Lady Dorma.
Tumblr media
So they all used to say it as this Atlantean Phrase.
The definition of Imperious is: befitting or characteristic of one of eminent rank or attainments; marked by arrogant assurance; commanding; domineering.
Also this word is close to Imperium which is defined as: the right to command the force of the state in order to enforce the law; a nation having or exerting supreme power; superpower; sovereignty; empire.
Rex is latin for King.
So when Namor and his people say Imperius Rex they are basically uttering a war cry of ‘For the Empire and King’. At least that's how I see it. It's a battle cry, it's a state of being, and it's one of Namor's titles. He's called the Imperius Rex.

Óscar Jaenada would be Leonard McKenzie, Namor's father. A colonizer who falls in love with a native woman and decides to abandon everything to live with her, until he is killed for leading native rebellions against colonizers.
