5 + 1 Fic Friday Roundup: On Campus
One of the things that April is an awareness month for is community college. So, have some fanfic with student//teacher characters or a school setting.
Mahogany (AO3) - "Shepard and squaddies are students at the elite Galactic Training Academy. (Think Starfleet meets Hogwarts. In space.) Reapers have been dead for hundreds of years, but there are still plenty of baddies out in the galaxy. Shepard-in-training rises to the occasion, with the aid of her squad and a certain snarky flight student. Currently Rated M for language and mature situations."
The Night Will Come but Not to Stay (AO3) - "Jazz is excited about going to Gotham University for college. It's halfway across the country from Amity Park and anyone who knows about her weird family or ghost nonsense. Finally, she can pretend to be a normal woman who just wants to go into psychiatry. She meets a cute guy named Jason, and they seem to be getting along great."
Form 23-C: Application for a New Roommate (AO3) - "After battling ninjas, aliens, madmen, mafiosos, other heroes and death itself, Jason was about to face his most unknown foe yet: a normal life. It's fine. He'd always dreamed of going to college and for once reality sort of lived up to expectations. He loves the classes, he can handle the workload and his cases too. His roommate is a total douche, but whatever. Jason's fine, he's got this. Then he meets his roommate's brother. Jason totally doesn't have this."
Holy Romantic Overtures, Batman! (AO3) - "After the heist of a lifetime, henchman!Jason decides to go legit and enrolls in college. The last person he expected to see there was Robin, and he certainly didn’t expect to fall for him either. But somehow it all works out. Maybe it’s all the labels?"
campus cryptid vs. future valedictorian (AO3) - "Mara Glass did not care about "weird hot guy," the supposed "campus cryptid." She had heard of him her first couple years and had him pointed out to her by a classmate once, but what was there to notice? Okay, he was probably thirty, a nontraditional student, so what? There were a number of those around. Apparently he was hot--well congrats to people who were into people, they could keep him. And if you asked Mara, from her extremely objective perspective, those Disney-green eyes were doing a lot of heavy lifting. There was nothing particularly noteworthy about a thirty-something guy who didn't talk about himself to twenty-year-old classmates. He probably had, like, a real life. There were rumors he was married, although Brittany noted that the only reason people thought that was because one time someone heard him finish a phone call with, "You light the candles, I'll bring dinner. I love you." None of that was remotely interesting to Mara. He sounded like a normal person, and she wished people would shut up about him. Then in third year, she had a history class with weird hot guy."
Bonus: Scholastic Nightmare (AO3) - "Nara Sayuri, a religious studies major from a traditional household, would be hard pressed to come up with a worse nightmare. It was her first time presenting a paper at a conference and apparently her paper was so wrong that one of her ancestors - a deified ancestor, the Shikabane-hime herself - came down from the heavens specifically to point out how off base Sayuri was."

♡Heart Shaped Sun Glasses♡ ♡pt 1♡
♡Book fair♡
Key words: Y/N-you're name L/N-Last name H/C-Hair color H/L-Hair length B/N-Book name
Paring: Damian Wayne x !fem!reader
Summary: Ever since Damian transferred too Gotham Academy there was this girl who always had the same classes as Damian named Y/N L/N
Song Inspired by:
♡Heart Shaped Sun Glasses♡
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Ever since Damian transferred too Gotham Academy there was this girl who always had the same classes as Damian named Y/N L/N, Y/N would always wear these Heart sun glasses on her head, Y/N was always sweet, caring and kind, mostly everyone in their class is friends with her, Damian had confusing feelings for Y/N, he would always get annoyed when she sat next to him but in the same time, he didn't mind it
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
It was Saturday, 7:05 A.M, Heavy rain was pouring as Damian, Bruce and Tim ate their breakfast, Damian didn't really like Saturday's because Jason and Dick visits on Saturday, and there isn't any school on Saturday, so Damian wasn't able to see Y/N, Damian ate his cereal while watching the heavy rain pour
"Damian, are you even listening too me?" Bruce asked as Damian snapped back to reality
"I am sorry Father, please repeat" Damian said softly while staring at his cereal as Bruce sighed
"You're school said there will be a book fair next Saturday, they were asking if you would like to join" Bruce said while drinking his coffee as Tim fell asleep on the table
"Hmm, depends on who will join the book fair" Says Damian while taking a bite of his cereal
Bruce sighed "Brooklyn Bay, Maya May, David Yearwood, Lucy Willow,Marcus Baker, Dorcas Meadows-"
Damian huffed while listening to all the names
"-Y/N L/N" Bruce said as Damian stared at Bruce as his cheeks start to heat up as his eyes slightly widen
"That's all the people, so, would you like to join Damian?" Bruce asked while reading his news paper
"Y-yes, Father, I'd like to join, thank you" Damian said softly while staring at his cereal. After Damian finished his cereal he went up to his room as he closed the door and face-timed Jon Kent
"Oh, Hey Damian!" Jon greeted through the phone
"Hello, Jon do you have any experience with girls?" Damian asked
"well, no sorry..... But maybe Jason or Dick could help you with that" Jon stated as Damian softly nodded
"Okay, thank you, see you soon Jon" Damian said softly while hanging up and went downstairs to find Jason and Dick
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Time Skip: Damian found both Jason and Dick in the living room of the Wayne Manor
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
As Damian walked into the living room Dick and Jason stared at him
"oh, hey Dames!" Dick said happily "Do you need something?" Jason asked "I need some advice, Jon said i should ask you guys" Damian said coldly while taking a seat on the couch
"Advice for what?" Dick asked as Damian's face start to heat up from embarrassment not wanting to admit
".... G-Girl Advice" Damian mumbled as Dick's eyes widen and Jason smirked "Uhm, sure, what about?" Dick asked "there's this girl, i like but i don't know how to tell her.... And every time she sits next to me i push her away, but she stills hangs out with me.... And I'm planning to ask her out next Saturday, at the book fair" Damian said softly
"Book fair?, that's a pretty boring place to ask a girl out" Jason said as Damian glared at him
"Y/N likes books, that's why I'm going to the book fair next Saturday, Father said she'll be there" Damian said coldly "speaking of Bruce, does Bruce know you have a crush?" Dick asked "W-well, no... Not yet" Damian mumbled "wait, how old are you again?" Jason asked as Damian sighed "I'm fifteen, Y/N is also fifteen, but I'm five months older then her" Damian said while Dick softly nodded "Okay" "That's a bit specific" said Jason
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Time Skip (because i have no real advice on how to ask someone out) : at the book fair
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
As Damian searched for Y/N in the book fair, but failed until... He saw a girl with H/L, H/C wearing heart sun glasses as Damian's face start to lit up and Damian starts to walk up to Y/N
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
"H-hey, Y/N" Damian said softly while walking up to Y/N as Y/N softly smiled at him "oh, Hey Damian" Y/N said while getting a book and reading it "w-what are you reading?" Damian asked while staring at the book "I'm reading B/N, it's really good" Y/N said softly "oh, cool..... Can i ask you a question?" Damian asked "uhm, sure, what is it about?" Y/N asked curiously as Damian's face start to heat up "uhm....are you free next Friday?" Damian asked softly while trying to hide the blush on his face "yeah, i think so, why?" Y/N asked confused "well, there's this new cafe that just opened..... I was wondering if you'd like to go to the cafe, with me" Damian mumbled as Y/N slightly blushed "L-like a date?" Y/N asked while blushing "Y-yeah, like a date" Damian mumbled while blushing as Y/N smiled "sure, I'd love to go with you" Y/N said softly while putting the book on a shelf "R-Really?" Damian said softly slightly shocked "sure!.... I'll see you Next Friday?" Y/N softly said "uhm, yeah sure see you next Friday" Damian mumbled as Y/N left......
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Hiiiii, there will be a part two, where Y/N and Damian goes to the cafe but I'm currently working on other of my drafts so it might take long

Dick Grayson’s Nightwing suits, Part Two
Tumblr media
The return of the fingerstripes, design by Bruno Redondo, 2021. (First seen in Nightwing vol 4 # 88)
Tumblr media
Dick’s original Nightwing suit in a version where he could zip up the deep v-neck and with a wrist-band firing tech. Tales of the Teen Titans Annual # 3. Writers Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, art Gorge Pérez and Dick Giordano. (1984)
Tumblr media
Nightwing as an action figure and in a tv and comic cartoon. New Titans # 93. Writer Marv Wolfman, art Tom Grummett, Adam Hughes and Al Vey. (1992)
Tumblr media
Elseworld Nightwing in New Teen Titans Annual # 10. Written by Marv Wolfman and Louise Simonson, art Scott Lee, Martin Griffiths, Kevin Conrad and Dan Davis. (1994)
Tumblr media
Rebirth suit with glider wings. Nightwing vol 4 # 6. Written by Steve Orlando and Tim Seleey, art Roge Antonio. (2016)
Tumblr media
Nightwing vol 4 # 39. Writer Sam Humphries, art Jamal Campbell, Phil Jimenez, Matt Santorelli. In a flashback, the first version of the “discowing” suit is made of Dick’s old workout gear. (2018)
Tumblr media
Which artist doesn't love to be able to make new suits for their heroes...? At different times in future-timelines of Future State, Dick was shown wearing several different models.
Future State: Nightwing # 1. Writer Andrew Constant, art Nicola Scott. (2021)
Tumblr media
The Future State: Teen Titans story takes place a few years after Nightwing, but there's also a flashback with Dick in a suit that looks a lot like his current, but with a T on the belt. Future State: Teen Titans # 1. Writer Tim Sheridan, art Rafa Sandoval and Jordi Tarragona. (2021)
Tumblr media
Teen Titans Academy # 1. A prequel title for the Future Staten Teen Titans that, honestly, I don’t expect will ever come to pass because I don’t believe a comic book company will or can tie their main comic book line to a future set in stone...
But anyway, it’s pretty much the current (2021) suit and the same as seen in the Furure State flashbacks. The old Titans have a T on their ordinary suits. Writer Tim Sheridan, art Rafa Sandoval. (2021)
Tumblr media
The Man who Flies. in Batman Black & White (2021) # 5. Story and art Jamal Campell. A version of the Rebirth suit with glider wings – and it's probably those wings which gives the suit stripes on the side of his torso in a lighter colour.
Tumblr media
Titans United # 1 (2021), a comic tied to the tv- show Titans.
Tumblr media
Nightwing in the Fanon-friendly Webtoon Batman: Wayne Family Adventures (2021). Episode # 7. Writing CRC Payne, inks Starbite, flats & rendering C M Cameron.
Tumblr media
Young Justice: Phantoms, season 4 (2021).
Tumblr media
In the Fantasy AU comic Dark Knights of Steel (2021). # 1, writer Tom Taylor, art Yasmine Putri.
Tumblr media
Nightwing in the 2021 animated Injustice movie, where he of course dies and becomes the new Deadman.
Tumblr media
Nightwing dress uniform in Teen Titans Academy # 9 (2021).
Tumblr media
Nightwing in the third season of the animated Harley Quinn on HBO Max, with Harvey Guillen as voice actor. (2022)
Tumblr media
Batman: Gotham Knights – Gilded city # 2 (2022), a tie-in prequel comic to the game Gotham Knights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A number of costume options for Nightwing in the Gotham Knights game (2022).
Tumblr media
Matching biker jacket in Nightwing vol 4 # 93 (2022).
Tumblr media
Another version with glider wings in Nightwing vol 4 # 94 (2022).
Tumblr media
Nightwing vol 4 # 104. (Dick gets a temporary new suit when he is tempted by a bad guy with the powers of Superman.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Batman Superman: World’s Finest # 21 (2023), main universe Batman and Superman visits Earth-22, known from Kingdom Come where Dick was called Red Robin. Here, he is called Nightwing and the artist Dan Mora wrote on X/former Twitter that this takes place before Dick became Red Robin. So there appears a retcon of Dick’s history on Earth-22 has taken place.
Tumblr media
(At least, it would make his daughter’s codename Nightstar more logical, if her parents were Starfire and Nightwing rather than Robin/Red Robin. And in the comic The Kingdom: Nightstar from 1999, a younger Dick is seen with a Nightwing-like suit.)

Alright so Batgirls. *sigh*
I can’t remember if this was mentioned when they first announced Batgirls but this book is very clearly meant for a younger audience. I’d say 12-14 y/o girls is the demographic they’re trying to appeal to, maybe younger. And there’s nothing wrong with that. There definitely should be more content for that demographic and this is a great book for that demographic. The issue is that existing fans of the Batgirls, especially the most passionate ones, are not a part of that demographic. And that makes the creative decisions they made very frustrating.
The Batgirls (especially Cass (and probably Babs. i don’t read much of her. Steph is in the same boat as Tim to me)) constantly fall victim to de-aging in main canon and to have Cass and Steph now be written as 13/14 years old (the writers certainly didn’t “misspeak” in that interview. they are clearly written and even drawn to be that young) which is younger than Damian is in main canon, is just insulting to both their fans and these characters. Cass’ fans in particular have been voicing their concerns about Cass not being taken seriously and what de-aging her means to her character for years. Batgirls doing this to Cass on top of what Birds of Prey did to her, on top of what Young Justice did to her, is just sad and doesn’t allow for anyone who hasn’t read a lot of Cass content (specifically her Batgirl run) to understand who she is.
I think what writers and publishers and all those people who decide what kids want to see, fail to understand is that kids are fully capable of understanding stories with older protagonists and serious themes, and that stories with older protagonists can be silly and lighthearted. So instead they choose between having a fun story with a child protagonist for a younger audience or a serious story with an adult protagonist for adults. This disconnect from child, young adult and existing audiences obviously leads to backlash from that existing audience because the characters they’ve invested themselves in, characters who already rarely get any solo content, end up drastically changed by the decision to cater to a younger audience. (I’ve noticed that DC has struggled with this for many Batman related books. Many of them struggle to decide if the demographic they’re trying to appeal to is teens or adults but that’s a whole other thing.) I recognize that young heroes are important for young demographics so that they can see people like them going through the same struggles as them and whatnot, but these where the wrong characters to use because they all should be adults by now. If DC wants to use Batman characters to get a young audience to read their comics, Gotham Academy would have been a great team to bring back! Hell, make Maps a Robin! She would be a great character for this audience to grow up with. At the very least Batgirls should not be in the main canon and instead be treated like the YA graphic novels DC has been doing.
Now that that’s out of the way I’ll move on to positive things.
I liked Batgirls #1. I often gravitate towards works for audiences younger than I and so far this is a great book for that audience. It’s fun and the visuals stand out against what we’ve been seeing in most ongoing comics. I love the art. The only thing is I’m not sure if one of the girls is narrating in the purple text blocks or if there is an actual narrator. I’ll have to read it again. I just had a really good time reading this issue and it’s filled a hole that Lumberjanes left last year. I plan on continuing my original plan of buying each issue until the first arc is done and then buying TPBs because I still want to support Cass and Steph content. Voting with my feet and whatnot. I probably wouldn’t recommend this book to Cass and Steph (and Babs tbh) fans unless they share a similar mindset to what I have reading this. I would recommend this to people who just want to read a fun book though.
But yeah. Writers should read preexisting characters’ books. Reading comics shouldn’t lead to me writing 1000 words about one issue.

Maribat promt, MariDamiJon where they new each other beaver the leave and the oder were kinda friends but they were rivals. So they met again when mari moves and goes to Gotham academy. And there like oh your alive cool beans.but inside there like "thank God yeah"because they was a tension(as much tension there can be with 10 year olds.)So now they are both aggressively trying to seduce jon who in the middle of this is trying to figure out who likes who and which one he likes (its both)
Yeah so, this is a bit long. It took me a long time to write this so sorry, anon.
Chapter 1/3
The moment the caped community hears about the new protégé that Wonder Woman took under her wing, everyone holds their breath. The moment Ladybug is introduced, tiny and too serious for her age, money exchanges hands.
And when she meets both Superboy and Robin, the whispers start.
Apparently, the League has some needs for new blood and everyone – and by everyone, she means heroes and villains alike – is calling them the Tiny Trinity.
“Maybe if you aren’t that lacking in height, they wouldn’t have called us that,” she drawls while Robin stalks the hallway of the Watchtower and Superboy is floating along while their mentors are busy with a meeting.
“Silence,” Robin hisses like a ruffled cat, “Everything was fine before you forcefully inserted yourself between us.”
Robin is around her age, right? He is only shorter than her so throwing hands with him is fine.
“You know what you should have done?” she huffs, chin titled up, arms crossed in front of her chest and planting herself against the door, “Go and cry to daddy Bat about how having a chaperone ruins your play dates with Superboy.”
“They aren’t play dates!” and “Who is the chaperone?!” overlap and Ladybug sighs.
-
Ladybug disappears one day. There is almost no trace, nothing to suggest that she ever exists. Nothing aside from the reports.
“She has personal matters to resolve,” is what Wonder Woman tells the League.
And as suddenly as she disappeared, she appears in Paris alongside with a boy in a cat suit. There are whispers of magical jewels and butterflies but no one can make head or tail of it.
And then, the whole caped community is banned from Paris.
-
Gotham is… soothing. Which is a word she never thought she would use to describe this city.
After everything with Hawk Moth, Gotham looks almost like a break. If a break comes with high chances of a) being held hostage at gun point, b) being cornered in an alley or c) kidnapped.
-
The first time she runs into one of Gotham’s vigilantes, Two Face has a gun and a coin and every visitor at Gotham Museum is being held hostage. The big bad boss is making acquaintance with the G.C.P.D and Marinette is busying huddling in a corner while the henchmen stand over their hostages.
“We have to do something,” Tikki hisses into her ear, tucked inside her hoodie and curls up into the back of her neck, “If this holds up any longer, you’d be late to your interview.”
“I doubt there is going to be an interview,” she whispers, keeping a wary eye on the trigger-happy henchmen, “Seeing as, you know, the people doing the interviewing are stuck in this mess too.”
There is supposed to be an exhibition next weekend at this very place and they are posting announcements and looking for volunteers. It is not like it is paid work but there would be a certificate of participation.
You know, just brownie points for college.
“Besides,” she starts, glancing toward Two Face as he starts his own monologue, “Ladybug has no business in this city.”
It is well-known that Gotham is under the Bats and Birds’ jurisdiction. No one in the caped community would stray inside its borders while wearing a mask.
It is a rule that has been kept and maintained for years.
“Let’s just sit tight and wait for rescue,” she says, leaning back against the wall.
And it should have ended there. Everything would have been fine and everyone would continue on their merry ways.
Except, Two Face turns to them with a manic grin.
“And as a little motivation for our friends,” the man leers toward the camera that one of his own henchmen set up a while ago, “One of these hostages will have the honor of being handpicked as the bargain chip.”
And just her luck because he is look at her.
Two henchmen haul her to her feet and she sighs, shagging in their hold as they drag her forward.
There is a black collar. One that she is familiar with from the olden days of listening in on League’s reports while Diana walked her through the mechanics of things.
“This thing here is an inhibitor collar,” Two Face grins, unlatching it with a click, “Of course, these babies are used on metahumans but I, for one, love the addition benefits.”
She has to fight to keep the frown off her face when the collar settles around her neck and clicks shut.
Two Face holds up a switch and there are two buttons and she really does not want to know what they are for. Fortunately, or not, Two Face continues, never mind about anyone’s comfort.
“Every five minute that my demands are not met, I am going to press one of these buttons,” he says, almost conversationally, “What happens is either a little bit of electric or a bomb and this little girl goes boom.”
“So you just go through a hostage every five minutes,” she piques up, glancing back at her fellow hostages, “How long do you think we would last you?”
There are around forty or fifty people gathered in the room, either huddling together or trying to melt into the wall.
“In the worst case, you would only have around four to five hours before you run out of hostages,” she explains, “After that, what will stop the G.C.P.D from storming the place?”
Two Face smirks, all white teeth and something like a threat in the curl of his lips.
“You are quite new here, aren’t you?” the gun settles under her chin, the metal cold against her skin, “Good old Gordon is a bleeding heart and he knows that I am not joking.”
She has to tamper down the urge to scowl when he leans closer with a leer.
“You better pray for good luck, little girl. Heads or tails; either you die or you don’t.”
With that merry words, the countdown starts.
And at the fourth minute since the countdown starts, there is suddenly a smoke bomb. Then, there is a whisper of bullet and a dart stabs into Two Face’s neck.
“You-“ the man sways on his feet, face murderous, the hand with the remote trembling.
She takes that chance and kicks, watching with relief as the remote flies out from his grip. The accompanying groan is just a bonus that she takes pleasure in hearing.
The comfort soon fades when she sways on her feet.
Oh… Smoke bomb… Probably something with paralyzing effects.
The ground rushes toward her and there is suddenly a black and blue blur at the edge of her vision.
-
It is kind of surprising that there is no little bird after her after the museum incident.
That is almost considerate of them, if she had not known better. Well, she does know better so the thought is dismissed with a shake of her head.
After all, the daddy Bat did teach his birds to only ever going in with concrete evidences.
“You did grow up, Marinette,” Tikki says, nestles in the little nest of clothes that she made for her, “They probably did not recognize you.”
-
The second time she runs into one of the birds, it is a coincidence. And the one she runs into does not really consider himself a bird anymore.
She is not looking for trouble. No, sire, no trouble-looking at all.
Except, trouble finds her when a band of thugs corner her in an alley.
“Come on, pretty girl,” one of the fuckers leers, slamming his fist into the wall by her head, “Just a little private time, you, me and the guys.”
She can feel Tikki’s touch through the fabric of the hoodie’s pocket.
“How about you let me through and we pretend this never happens?” she smiles, shoulders relaxing and placing her hands on the wall, “No harm, no foul, right?”
The thugs wilt and by then, she knows that they have seen it” the Red Hood insignia that is pinned into the hoodie, just directly above her heart.
“You aren’t one of his girls,” the one whose fist is still a little bit too close to her head for comfort, and apparently the one who does not possess any gray matter, speaks, “Your accent isn’t Crime Alley’s.”
Well, so maybe he does have a bit of a brain.
Luckily, she does not need to say anything because a gun goes off somewhere just above them. And then, one of the thugs hits the ground, whimpering as he cradles his shattered kneecap.
And Marinette slinks past the trembling thugs as Red Hood lands in the alley.
She kind of want to feel guilty but she cannot find it in her to care.
The fuckers had it coming. Whatever Red Hood does to them is just karma.
-
“You need to be more careful,” Tikki frets, floating in a circle as Marinette collapses on her bed, “It could have ended up worse, Marinette.”
“Yet it didn’t,” she murmurs, “Everything’s fine so let it go, Tikki.”
“Wha-!” Tikki sputters somewhere above her prone form, “Marinette, you can’t just rely on your luck forever!”
She reaches for a pillow and buries her face into it and let Tikki’s words floods over her.
“For the sake of everything good and holy! Marinette, take better care of yourself!”
She really is tired.
-
The first time is happenstance, twice is coincidence and thrice? Well, then there is no coincidence, is there?
After all, there is no such thing as an accident when masked men stormed into the café that she usually visits after work. Yeah, the one just on the edge of Crime Alley.
They have guns. There are other customers crouching under the tables and the staffs are hiding behind the counter.
“We are looking for a friend of ours,” the man who seems to be the leader says, hefting his gun and finger slipping dangerously close to the trigger, “Ms. Dupain-Cheng, would you mind coming out for a chat?’
Yeah no. And it is not like they know how she looks like, is it?
“Tick tock, Ms. Dupain-Cheng,” the man clicks his tongue, “Come out by yourself or I will have my men drag you out. And believe me, you will not like that.”
Ok, now that sounds threatening.
“Tikki,” she whispers, “What should I do?”
“I don’t know,” Tikki murmurs into her ear, hidden in the crook of her neck, out of anyone’s sight, “I really don’t know.”
Except, the choice is suddenly torn away from her grasps when the window shatters and a familiar blur of red, green and yellow rushes in.
Fuck, says her brain as she watches Robin disarms her would-be kidnappers and resolves the situation in less than five minutes.
The Boy Wonder turns to her direction the moment he finishes tying the last of her would-be assailants.
Well, out of the frying pan and into the fire then.
-
Gotham Academy falls into a hush when Damian Wayne shoulders his way through the crowded hallway. And Marinette is in the direction he is heading toward.
“Yeah so,” she grabs her books and slams her locker close, a bit too forceful but who cares anyway when Wayne – no, Robin – is heading her way with murder in his eyes, “I think I should go…”
Maps – sweet, dear and an absolute devil – bounces on the ball of her heels and clings onto her.
“Wait,” the girl squeals excitedly, “You two know each other?!”
Well…
“Come on, introduce us!” Maps whines, eyes already glimmering with whatever schemes she is cooking up, “He’s going to make a fine addition to our team!”
Marinette does not even have the time to get a word in before Wayne is looming over them. And by looming, she means the Boy fukcing Wonder is now taller than her.
This is so unacceptable! She is so going to riot if Jon is taller than her too!
“So this is where you disappeared to,” Wayne says in lieu of a greeting – as rude as ever, then. “I did not think you would have the guts to show your face in front of me, Dupain-Cheng.”

Adrichat Craziness plus Miraculous/Batfam Crossover
In light of this new trend I had an urge to do this. This is a Miraculous/Batfam crossover. I'm sorry.
Imagine Damian, Marinette, and Adrien are friends.
How they met and all that backstory stuff is up to you.
Maybe Damian was sent in on a League mission or maybe it was an exchange program.
Maybe Adrien went to a gala with his father or Marinette's parents was catering a party in Gotham or something.
The important part is that they know eachother.
They could all be in a poly, just friends, cult members, secret relatives, a couple and a third wheeler, whatever.
Oh! And they know eachother's identities.
That's important too.
The great thing about this relationship is that no one knows about it except for the tree of them.
It's been hard hiding it from their family and other friends but they already have secret identities.
Lying and making excuses is easy for them.
They have weekly video chats, online movie nights, group chats, revenge plans, black mail, all that good stuff.
They know eachother better then they know themselves at this point.
So one day Damian is at Gotham Academy just scrolling through Tumblr when he finds this gem on #1 trending.
Adrichat.
There are adrichat memes, adrichat fanfics, adrichat comics, ADRICHAT.
The reaction is instant.
He bursts out in laughter, scaring everyone in the vicinity.
The Ice Prince LAUGHING?!?
Either the world is ending or it's the Joker.
Cue the panic and screaming.
Everyone is either running out, looking for places to hide, frozen in fear, or something else along those lines.
After a bit everyone has calmed down a bit and their has masks on they start to notice things.
Wait, where's the henchmen? The rumbling ground? The crazed laughter?
The only laughing that can be heard is Damian's.
Now as they look around they realize that there's no gas seeping out from the windows, under the doors, or through the walls either.
What is happening??
The Batfam arrives and observes from the shadows for a bit.
The cafeteria is full of people but non of them are really reacting like they normally do in some sort of villain attack.
Wait, why is everything just standing around awkward? Where's the henchmen, the guns, the JOKER?!
After a few minutes they come out and start questioning people.
The students and staff just sorta point to a corner of the cafeteria where they are greeted at the sight of a hysterical Damian on the floor.
After the shock of seeing Damian LAUGHING wore off, Nightwing instantly went into panicking mother hen mode and gave him the Joker laugh gas antidote.
It didn't work.
He's still laughing.
WHY IS HE STILL LAUGHING!?!??
At this point the rest of the fam snaps out of it and tries to figure out why the antidote isn't working while panicking. (Well they weren't outwardly showing it so that the civilians could see but they were.)
Through his laughter and tears-wait. TEARS?! Damian tells them to get his phone and call someone called Angel?
Confused Red Robin picked up his phone from off the floor (he dropped and kicked it away during his fit) and looks through Damian's contacts.
As he scrolls through he sees them, Jon, and someone called 'Banana Sunshine Boi' before coming across "Scary Pastry Angel".
He calls them, puts them on speaker, and is surprised when he hears a accented tired female voice say "Dove? *groan* Why in the kwami are you calling me in 2 in the flipping morning?"
From where he is on the floor clutching his stomach, he makes a grabbing motion with one of his hands.
Once the phone is passed to him and he brings it to his ear he wheezes out "M-Mari."
Now panicked Marinette says "Omg are you crying?! Or are you laughing? It's hard to tell?"
"It's b-both actually. But t-that's not what's imp-portant here. Have you *wheeze* c-checked tumblr y-yet?"
"No? I literally just woke up. Wait, Lemme jussstttt......."
After that there was a long pause.
They thought maybe he accidentally hung up when the mystery person whispers through the phone.
"I... I can't... is this for real?"
"Yep."
"........... Heh.... Hhehe. Ehheeheheh. HehEHWHHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAH!"
Slowly the voice on the other side delves into uncontrollable laughter, triggering Damian to laugh harder as well.
He drops the phone again only for it to be caught by Red Hood before it hit the ground.
"What the hell are we supposed to do now? What even HaPpEnEd?!" Asked the anti-hero as he turned to his brothers.
They all just sorta look at eachother before Damian tells them to add Banana to the call.
"Excuse me. WHO?!?" Asked Jason before the phone was snatched out of his hand by Tim.
He does as Damian tells him to and after a few rings another tired accented but now male voice is heard.
"Guys why are mew calling me so early? What's happeting? Mew know I have a furto shoot in the meowning."
'Even half asleep he's still punning.' thinks Damian as Marinette answers his question.
"We c-called because ppttt C-can you check t-tumblr please. I-It's important."
"Umm. Okay?" Was the reply.
They all waited for a few moments before Adrien's voice was heard again.
"Is this real?"
"Correct."
"So I'm actually trending on Tumblr?"
"*wheeze* y-yeah?"
"And hundreds of people are writing fanfics, making memes, and drawing comics about me dating myself?"
"Yep."
"........."
"........."
"Dang. I never though about me and Chat like that but I guess we do make a cute couple. After all, the dashing royal and the smooth knight has always been one of my favorite tropes."
"bwahahWHAHAHHAAHAHAHHAHAH!"

Tumblr media
The world was a strange place. It had always been that way, even before the world had been graced with legendary heroes. The earth had long been an oddity throughout the cosmos and not for the reasons you may think. No, it wasn't the masked crusaders like Batman that made the Earth stand apart from any other planet. It was the strange little words etched into the wrists of every newborn babe.
Soulmates. A phenomenon that graced each human, Atlantean and Amazon. Someone the fates above craft to be your other half, a friend or a family member or a lover. A person your life is bound to, the little name on your wrist. Or rather, one of your wrists.
See, Y/N didn't hate the soulmate system. She despised it with every ounce of her being. How was she supposed to know the difference between the two names etched onto either wrist? One was her mortal enemy and the other was her perfect match in every way. So why the hell did both say the exact same thing?
"Be patient Paidi mou, (My child)." Y/N's mother always insisted. "It will all make sense eventually."
That was easy for her to say, she didn't know what was written on either of Y/N's wrists. In fact, no one did, only Y/N, her soulmate and her enemy could see the delicate script. Not to mention the fact that until she met them, she couldn't utter the surname permanently etched into her skin. But the girl's soulmate was the furthest thing from her mind right now.
"What's up with you?" Damian Wayne frowned as he jogged to Y/N's side. "Don't tell me you're nervous, fatatdhahabia. (Golden Girl)."
"Still don't speak Arabic, Wayne," Y/N grumbled and bumped her shoulder against her friend's. "Besides your one to talk. You called me at least five times this weekend asking if we could just wait another year."
The ex-assassin gave her an annoyed expression, "And why can't we? Let's take a gap year and graduate next year instead."
"Damian you've taken three gap years already," She gave him a side glance, "At this rate, you'll never graduate. Plus no offense but unlike you, I want to graduate with people my age."
Damian Wayne threw a vulgar gesture over his shoulder at her and raced off to find someone else to annoy. Y/N chuckled to herself as the rude boy shoved his way through the crowded hallway. It seemed that even after years of living outside of the League of Assassins the boy still had some lingering views. She couldn't exactly blame him, her family had trained her similarly and they'd thrust more than a few odd customs upon her.
If only they could see her now, braving the harshest test of all, the final year of high school.
***
"So what did you get done in for?" A familiar voice hissed in discontent as a bag was ungracefully thrown onto the desk beside Y/N's. The girl snorted softly and raised an eyebrow as if to say; What do you think?
"Bad mouthing the teacher again?" Damian guessed with a bemused eye roll.
"Bad mouthing the teacher again." She chorused. "In French this time. You?"
"Chinese."
Y/N watched Damian plop down beside her with a large huff. He dug through his book bag pulling out a large textbook and his exercise book. Y/N examined the books finding an array of Greek letters scrawled across the cover. The girl gave a chuckle at the boy's interest in her first language. The boy raised an eyebrow when he realized she was staring.
"I'll help you with Greek if you help me with Russian." Y/N whispered as the teacher tasked with watching detention entered. The balding man, Mr Raneth, was infamous for his bad hearing but that didn't mean the H/C haired girl was willing to risk another week of detention on top of her sentence.
"What makes you think I know Russian?" He grumbled leaning his chair against the classroom’s back wall. She gave him a look as if to say; Well don't you? "Fine. But only if we can go where I want for the weekend."
"I'm not going to Paris again," Y/N deadpanned at the boy and then shrugged. "If we stay in the general area, I'm all for a weekend trip."
"'Ana 'ukrihukum(I hate you)." He groaned but complied. Thus commenced a long hour of back and forth arguing in several languages.

Damian Wayne x Reader: Bully Part 2
Thank you anon for requesting! Requests are still open, and I’m really sorry for not getting a lot of these out sooner!
You can find Part 1 here
Requested: Yes
Warnings: Swearing. (Captain America is so disappointed in me… oh wait, wrong fandom)
Pairing: Damian Wayne x Fem!Reader
Word count: 1,135
Things you probably wanna know, for all you ‘x reader’ illiterates:
(Y/N): Your Name
(H/C): Hair Colour / Color
(E/C): Eye Colour / Color
(B/F/N): Best Friend’s Name
***
You hummed quietly to yourself in front of Gotham Academy. It was finally the end of the day, and you intended on waiting on Damian. Your class was let out early today, so you weren’t too fussed with reading your book quietly. Taking a seat on one of the wooden benches under a tree, you let your eyes scan each word.
A few pages in, the bell rang, officially signalling the end of the day. Packing your book back into your bag, you began the search for Damian. Or, maybe you didn’t need to. Before there was even a minute to search for him, you felt a slight tap on your shoulder. You spun around to see Damian with an unamused look on his face.
“Are you ready?” He asked, raising a perfect eyebrow.
You nodded cheerfully, taking his wrist. “Come on! Cold Stone is this way!”
Five minutes later, you were seated in Cold Stone, ice creams in front of the both of you. Damian decided to go with a Batman ice cream (it was really a blueberry and vanilla ice cream) while you went with a Robin ice cream (basically banana and strawberry smoothie flavoured). You tried your hardest to connect with Damian; after all, he was like you! Dismissed, rejected, publicly humiliated… you definitely knew how it felt. But Damian’s answers were restricted to “yes”, “no”, and “maybe”.
Ever since then, your presence in Wayne Manor became known. You befriended all of Damian’s brothers and you always stayed over at the Manor during the weekends. It was your safe spot, after all. You and Damian would spend the day lounging around while playing video games, either going to the ice-cream store or a walk around the harbour.
You made it your number one goal to befriend the Wayne heir, and sometimes you were so close to breaking down his walls. But every time, he seemed to realise it and build them back up again, shutting you out once more. It wasn’t until it was your turn to be saved did you get any progress.
It was three years later when both of you were 15. You were walking back home after taking over one of your friend’s shifts because she was sick. Your parents were away on a business trip all the way in Metropolis, so they couldn’t pick you up, and your grandmother didn’t even have a drivers licence.
You walked down the streets, a sharp chill washing over you. With every step you took, you felt as if you were being watched. Taking out your phone, you discreetly turned it onto camera mode, using it as a way to see behind you. Sure enough, there was a dark figure slowly advancing towards you. Panic overwhelmed you and you quickened your pace. The bus stop was in sight and you couldn’t wait to get into the vehicle. But before you were even close to the bus stop, a hand covered your mouth, drawing you into an alleyway.
You tried your best to scream, but the person prevented you from doing anything. Man, you were screwed. Thinking quickly, you bit down on the person’s hand, and they quickly jumped away from you.
“You bitch,” the man swore, his gruff voice filling the once silent air. “You’re going to pay for that.”
“Actually,” A voice said. The voice was modified to sound more robotic and scratchier, but you could still make out what he was saying. “You’re going to pay.”
A small thud sounded from behind the man and he stupidly turned around. He was met with a sharp punch in the face, knocking him out completely. Fear flooded your senses and you tried desperately to back away from the hooded character.
“Please, leave me alone,” you begged, bringing your arms in front of your face. “I didn’t do anything bad!”
A hand wrapped around your wrist, and you flinched, pulling your arm back. “I’m not going to hurt you.” You looked up at his words, realising that he was the infamous Robin of Gotham. “What are you doing this late?”
Lowering your hands, you shifted your gaze to the unconscious man behind him. “My friend wasn’t feeling too good so I took over her shift.”
Damian closed his eyes from under the domino mask. ‘Dammit, (Y/N),’ he thought to himself as he brought you out of the alley, ‘your kindness is going to get you killed.’
“Thank you for saving me back there,” you murmured before turning your attention to the man on the ground. “What’s going to happen to him?”
“The police are on their way,” Robin said through gritted teeth. “I’m going to take you home. I hope you’re not afraid of heights.”
You unlocked the door to your parents’ apartment before turning to your saviour. “Do you want to come inside? I can make tea… I’m sure I can find a few bandages if you’re hurt…” you rambled, wincing at how lame you sounded.
“It’s fine.”
You gulped, your (E/C) eyes on the floor. “Well, thanks… I guess.” But when you looked up, he was already gone.
***
Walking into Gotham Academy was one of the most tedious tasks you were ever met with. After all, you were faced with bullying for at least 5 years. Ever since Damian had a major ‘glow-up’, his popularity skyrocketed. Because you were his friend, your popularity was brought up with him. But you didn’t want the popularity. You just wanted Damian to be your real friend.
Clutching your bag strap just a little bit tighter, you walked to your locker. Before you even knew it, Damian was standing behind you, his signature smirk on his face.
“Hey, Dami!” You smiled, looking up at him. Ugh, you hated how tall he was sometimes.
“Good morning, (N/N),” he addressed, opening his locker beside yours.
You eyed him curiously. “Damian, are you okay?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“You’ve never called me that before.” Were you finally getting somewhere? After 3 years of persisting?
“Grayson didn’t want me to scare you off. He gave me a lecture about how I wasn’t making an effort with you as a friend,” he dismissed casually. You frowned, strangely deflated. “Come on, we’re going to be late for English.”
“Right, yeah. Um, Damian, we’re still on after school, right? We are going to the harbour, aren’t we?”
“Of course we are. But maybe… the art gallery has a new exhibition they opened yesterday. Perhaps we could go there instead.
It might have the way your eyes lit up. Or how you began to walk with a hop in your step, or maybe it was the way you let out a laugh. But Damian Wayne was certain of one thing and one thing only; he was falling in love with you.

(Part Two)
Another volume, done. God, I feel like I just survived a whirlwind. To say that this has been a very eventful volume of RWBY would be a /huge/ understatement. We had so, so much happen. New characters, uncovered truths, political battles, murder and chaos at every turn, just… a lot. But we once again made it to this point folks. We made it to the end and we can take it easy as we await Volume 8. But with the volume now over, how did it fare? Was it a success? A failure? Or somewhere in between? And how does it measure compared to the previous six?
We have a lot to go over folks. So much that I had no choice but to make this a two-parter. Yeah, that long folks. The last two-parter I did was twelve pages long, so… yeah.  In this section, we will cover Animation/Visuals, Audio, and the first half of the Character section (mainly the Atlas characters and villains). Part Two will cover the rest of the Characters (RWBYJNRQO), Story, Volume Stats, and my Final Thoughts. Everyone got all that? Good! With that said, let’s conclude this year’s RWBY Reviews with the biggest one of all: the full Volume Seven Review.
Animation/Visuals
Tumblr media
Perfect as always. The design work once again proves perfect. CRWBY described Mantle and Atlas as based on different industrial ages, and it shows. Mantle is a big, but worn down city. It has some major New York vibes. Heck, maybe even some Gotham City with how bleak it is. The people are down-trodden and the place just looks dirty. It is a relic of the past, while Atlas represents the future. Clean, shades of blue and white to show how pristine it is, fancy locations like Atlas Academy or the Schnee Manor. Atlas is the future. A representation of the greatness that humanity can achieve… at least it looks that way. The two cities contrast so much, and it’s just so well done. When you compare to how we sadly saw so little of Mistral in comparison seeing this much with Atlas was a real treat.
Tumblr media
Character stuff continues to be great. All of the new outfits of the heroes look fantastic. Even Jaune’s dumb hair ended up better in actual animation than it did in the still they showed at NYCC. Every character looks fantastic. Expressions are once more on point. One of the best cases is Ironwood. You can see how worn down the man is at every single turn, but also the steely determination. You can just look at him and you get the sense of strong authority, yet plain exhaustion all at the same time. In Chapter 11 when he goes from exhausted relief to full-blown horror, you feel it. Oh God do you feel it. You feel what all of these characters are feeling. Ruby’s despair in Chapter 11, Blake and Yang’s confliction in Chapter 7, Nora’s growing rage about Mantle all throughout the volume. How broken Ren feels in Chapter 13. The pure coldness from James form the same chapter when he shoots Oscar. The character animation was just on point.
Tumblr media
The effects are also well done. I mean the Salem apparition in Chapter 11? Horrifying. Fria’s Maiden-charged blizzard was the best though. Powerful, yet somehow haunting beautiful. There have been some updates as well, like Neon’s rainbow trail and Neo’s Semblance look a lot better. Some new Grimm designs like the Saybers and the pterodactyl thing. There’s kind of a dinosaur/Ice Age theme with the Grimm, which fits with the Antarctica-esque environment of Solitas. The fight scenes were very well done, especially in the final chapters. The Ironwood vs Watts fight was freakin’ excellent and we finally got to see the Anti-Gravity biome! RWBY vs Ace-Ops was amazing on all fronts, both with the choreography and on a symbolic level. The best fight imo though is Cinder vs Penny and Winter, especially when it gets taken out into the open air. Pure epicness. Seriously, every fight was freakin’ fantastic, even minor ones like JNRO vs FNKI or the Bees vs Robyn. Even some that I wasn’t into, like Tyrian vs Qrow, CLover, and Robyn were fun to watch~
Overall, the animation and visuals were excellent~ Five starts!
Audio
Tumblr media
If I went over every voice acting performance, we’d be here all day. Every actor was excellent. The regulars were excellent. The newbies were excellent. Everyone was excellent. We get people that we haven’t heard in a long while, like Taylor McNee (Penny), Elizabeth Maxwell (Winter), and Jason Rose (Ironwood). None of them have lost their touch. Taylor still captures Penny’s innocent charm beautifully, and her performance when Penny is just broken after being framed was heartbreaking. Jason was /especially/ good. He still carries the General’s strong authority while adding more weight, but when he becomes utterly unhinged? He did a masterful job with the performance. We also let Chris Sabat and Josh Grelle do more with their characters and it’s wonderful. Josh as Tyrian has always been great, but getting to hear Chris do more Watts? Excellent. I’m so used to him being the brute guy, like Vegeta in DBZ or Zoro in One Piece. But he does the calculated egomaniac very well and you can tell that he’s enjoying every single scene. Excellent job sir~ Jessica Nigri ended up stealing the show though, giving by far her most insane performance as Cinder yet and she 100% killed it.
We got some new people as well, and they were all great. I was so happy to see Cristina Vee getting cast and she does such a good job as Robyn. Playful but also determined. The Ace-Ops cast was good with Chris Wehkamp (Clover), Anaris Quinones (Harriet), and Mick Lauer (Marrow) being the stand-outs. Caitlin Glass got one episode as Willow, but she did an excellent job portraying how broken she is but also has just a spark of fight in her. She only got like… three minutes, and she did it perfectly. David Fennoy was a surprise to hear considering he was already in Grimm Eclipse, but it was a wonderful surprise. He perfectly portrays Pietro as this Gepetto-esque father figure who I fell in love with immediately. Then, of course, we have Jason Liebrecht as Qrow. To say that the guy was put into the not so flattering task of taking over due to the circumstances with Vic’s firing is putting it mildly. But he pulled it off. By the second chapter alone, I was already sold. He did an excellent job portraying Qrow and imo, already surpassed Vic. Like everything in Chapter 12? Jason /nailed/ every single emotion right on the head. I’m greatly looking forward to hearing more of him in the future~
The main cast as I said, were excellent. Some got it a bit easier this year, like Miles, Arryn, and Barbara. They still did great, but they took a bit more of a back seat and we’ll go more into that in Character. Neath and Aaron, while their characters stuff is more subdued, did an excellent job with their respective character’s viewpoints. Sam Ireland /finally/ got to do more with Nora outside ‘bubble and energetic’ with Nora’s anger about Mantle and her conflictions about Ren. She did it beautifully. Kara got much more with Weiss compared to last year, and she portrays all of Weiss’ worries and conflict perfectly. Especially in Chapter 4 when she tells her father off. I cheered so much. Lindsay with Ruby was perfect. She got a lot more serious moments with hr compared to the past, but she handled them all excellently. She goes through so many emotions in Chapter 11 alone and she hits every single one right in the head. She and Sam are tied for the standout among the mains, but all of them did an excellent job as always.
Tumblr media
Then what’s RWBY without its soundtrack? Once more, perfect work. The scores were all excellent. Penny’s letimotif, instrumentals of songs like The Path to Isolation and Trust Love, the haunting violins at the end of Chapter 9, even the three-second bit of Indomitable in Chapter 10. Alex Abraham once more does an amazing job. I still remember the kickass guitar during the first fight in Chapter 1 and I was immediately pumped. Every score added to every scene and added so much more to them. But they also knew when to just let scenes be quiet, and it added so much weight. Once more, quality sound work.
But then we have Jeff Williams. What do you want me to say that I haven’t been saying since Volume 1? The man is a genius. He did amazing. Casey did amazing. I got nothing new to add. The songs this volume were freakin’ excellent. The opening, while kind of a tone contrast to the volume, was an excellent song and perfectly expresses the themes of the volume. Then we have things like the uplifting rock ballad Brand New Day, the badassness of Hero featuring Caleb Hyles, and the credits song as per usual. Speaking of Caleb though, it was nice to hear some new vocalists with him, Santi C, and the quartet in War, though of course, Casey remains flawless as ever. I loved all of the songs. IDK if it tops V6’s soundtrack yet, but it’s up there. Now, of course, my favorites will likely change when the full tracks are out, but here is the current ranking:
War (Chapter 12)
Hero (Chapter 11)
Fear (Chapter 13 Credits)
Trust Love (Opening Theme)
Brand New Day (Chapter 5)
Until the End (Chapter 13)
Touch the Sky (Chapter 3)
Let’s Get Real (Chapter 6)
Celebrate (Chapter 6)
Audio-wise, the volume was great. Great voice acting. Great sound effects. Great music. Just great all around~
Characters, Part One (Villains and Atlas)
There are… so many characters this volume. So, so many. Hence why I had to divide it up. We’ll cover the villains and Atlas characters here, and we’ll focus on the mains in Part 2 of the review. Since the villains won’t take too long we’ll start with them and go from there.
Tumblr media
Not too much to say about Tyrian. He’s as terrifying and crazy as ever, and even moreso after Chapter 12, but it was nice to get some more details on his history before Salem. Him being a serial killer makes sense, as is his undying worship of Salem since she both saved him and she’s the manifestation of every twisted thing that he believes in. I think Chapter 12 also helped re-ignite his threat level with his brutal murder of Qrow, which reminded me even more than Chapter 6 of how terrifying the man is. Still, he was just there to be cray and murderous, and he did so. Watts thought was more interesting. We got some more background, like how he was a former Atlesian scientist who created Mantle’s security network and he joined Salem essentially because he felt like Ironwood put him down and he got jealous that Pietro’s project was chosen over his. It’s petty, but all the villains are petty. It helps him stand out though and he’s certainly one of the more interesting of Salem’s cult due to it. We also see that he does have some combat still, which is nice. No idea what happens with him now, but he served his role in this volume very well.
Tumblr media
But then we have Cinder and Neo. Neither of which I was expecting anything major from this volume. Well, guess I was wrong. Cinder as of late has attracted a lot of hate… I mean yeah we /are/ supposed to hate her, but people just hate her as a character. The main thing seems to be how we don’t know Cinder’s motivations, and I get that. But really? I think that she was excellent here. Unlike in Mistral, she is once more in control and thus her smug personality is back in full. She’s only in four episodes, and she uses that time masterfully to turn everything on its head. The way she broke Ironwood alone with just a glass chess piece. She clearly learned from Salem well. I mean the way that Salem broke Ruby by just mentioning Summer’s fate? That is some master class psychological warfare. Something that Cinder has clearly mastered and when she isn’t running off rage she can pull it off excellently. But of course, at the end, she again failed to get the Maiden powers. With how she became more and more insane throughout the fight, I fear that she’s going to become even more callous than ever before.
I’m also really starting to grow fond of Neo. She started off as an overhyped character (imo) that was brought back for mere fanservice, but they are clearly trying to use her as best as possible. And I think that they’re doing a great job. Neo has an agenda against Ruby and knows that Cinder can easily obliterate her, which is the only reason why Neo is dealing with this. You can tell that unlike Emerald and Mercury, she is not happy following Cinder’s orders. She’s only following her to both get at her target and to live, not out of gratitude or feeling like it’s all that she has due to her upbringing. It’s nice to see someone who Cinder has no control over, yet Cinder can still over-power her so she has to go with it for now. But it helps give Neo a character and compared to before where I just didn’t get why she existed, I’m legit excited to see what happens with her next.
Tumblr media
Now we can cover the Atlesian Military. They are… a complex bunch. Fitting, considering who their general is. James Ironwood has always been a very complicated character. On the one hand, we’ve seen through volumes 2-4 that he is genuinely a good person who wants to protect the people and do what’s right. But the problem with him has always been that he makes all the wrong choices. He didn’t heed Ozpin warnings in Beacon about showing off his military might, and it leads to the Fall and Atlas being made out as the villains. He hasn’t gotten any better. If anything, he’s gotten worse. He’s still well-intentioned, but as the old saying goes  “The pathway to Hell is paved with good intentions.”, and Jame is the living embodiment of it.
We see that James did genuinely want to trust the heroes. He gives them the Lamp back, he gives them their license, he has them train with his best. He was sincere and he just wants to protect people. But his own paranoia and flaws as a person have overwhelmed him. His TSD has deteriorated his mind and since he isn’t getting proper help, it’s making him lose it. He’s terrified of Salem, so much that once he saw that Black Queen chess piece and doubt was placed into his mind, he snapped. He went from taking RWBY’s secret-keeping well and keeping focused on what was important, to turning on them and leaving a city that he is just as responsible for as Atlas to die. It’s a truly tragic tale. You /want/ James to do the right thing. He’s not a bad person, and you can see the logic with all of his decisions. But they are the wrong decisions not just on a logical level when you really think about it, but especially on a moral level. You can see that he knows what he’s doing is wrong and that he isn’t happy about it, but he still does it and now hundreds will die because of it. He has gone from a flawed but heroic man, to no better than Salem herself which he seals by shooting Oscar with no hesitation. It is a sad tale, but it is a well-done arc and just shows how excellent of a character James is. I am very pleased with his character here.
Tumblr media
The Ace-Ops are decent additions. We don’t know a lot about them, but they have personality. Clover is the nice guy leader, Harriet is the confident and competitive second-in-command, Marrow is the out-going rookie, Elm is the out-going bruiser, and VIne is the calm, logical one. On the surface, they are heroic people… but like with James, it’s more complex. None of them are bad people, Marrow especially considering his Faunus status and he is fully aware of Atlas’ bigotry/messed up class system. But they were trained to not care about emotions or relationships. Priority Number One is obeying the general’s orders without question, and if they do, to go against those urges. It’s harsh because you can see that the five are good and friendly people, but once Ironwood lost it, that conditioning came into full effect.
You can tell that RWBY’s ‘betrayal’ hurt them. Harriet, despite saying that none of them are friends, clearly felt hurt and enraged. Same with Elm, though unlike Harriet who was practically going for the kill, Elm seemed to be trying to force herself to do so. Vine tried to solve it peacefully, clearly not wanting to fight, but no one else was willing to follow. Marrow was the biggest example. His heart was not in the fight, and I think he honestly did agree with RWBY. He tried to push himself otherwise, but it failed. Then Clover, who has stood by James’ side throughout even if he seemed unhappy with it, tried to arrest Qrow on the spot even when Tyrian re-entered the fray. That blind devotion sadly cost him his life… and I wonder how this is going to affect Ace-Ops. Despite what Harriet said, they were still all allies and I can see this messing them up. It either makes them want payback or see the light. Regardless, they were a good bunch of side-characters and I look forward to seeing what happens next.
Tumblr media
A bigger, and much sadder, example of this Atlas conditioning is Winter. She is loyal to James because due to him and the military, she got out of her abusive home and a shot at a better life. But the sad reality is that she's really in no better position than she would have been otherwise. She’s been groomed to become the Winter Maiden and despite her choosing it to make it her own, it's still pretty much someone deciding her life for her. She internalizes her feelings and continues to obey James, despite knowing and feeling that it is wrong. Just like she was trained to do. The only person that she makes an exception for is Weiss, which seeing how much she cares and is proud of her sister and even taking her to the Winter Maiden facility was super sweet. But even then not only does she still keep a composed demeanor around Weiss, but she still stood by James even after Weiss became wanted. But hopefully, with the Maiden destiny not off the table and Weiss a fugitive, this will give Winter the chance to accept her own emotions and begin to carve her own destiny. One not chosen by anyone but herself.
Tumblr media
But of course, the one we can blame for Winter’s state, along with James, is Jaques Schnee. I didn’t think I could hate him anymore than I already did, but I got proven wrong. The man is ambitious, willing to do anything to keep his business (well… the business he stole) running and himself in power. He runs for Council pretty much just to get rid of the embargo and takedown James. He’s despicable and I hate him and I hope he rots behind jail. Whitley doesn't really have anything new, just a bit more hammering down that he is the way he is due to the abuse and his sister’s leaving him behind. Willow though? She gets one episode, and I feel horrible for this woman. While her shutting down pretty much ruined her kids' lives, you can see why and feel sympathy for her. His is a woman worn down, and while the smallest spark of fight is in her as she gives Weiss the key to burying her father, it’s so clear that she’s broken. It’s going to take a very long time for her to recover if she does. As for Whitley, his father may be gone. But the control he had over his son is likely still firm. Which can only mean bad things for Weiss.
Tumblr media
Opposing Atlas is Robyn Hill, Mantle’s Hometown Hero. She is very much the anti-Ironwood. She’s devoted to Mantle and wants to do what’s best for them, even if it means breaking the law. But she’s not unreasonable either. She was very friendly to Clover and Marrow, only becoming antagonistic after Penny got framed for murdering her supporters. And even then, she listened to Blake and Yang and was willing to give Ironwood a chance. One that he blew sky high. But Robyn comes off as a good person who sees the injustices with Mantle and once making a change the legal way became impossible, she resorted to the illegal route. And even then, she and her Happy Huntresses never hurt anyone and were trying to help the people that James was making suffer. Just as her inspiration of Robin Hood. She’s a very likable, inspiring character though I do wish we got some more backstory for her. But hey, she’s a good person who didn’t fall into Atlas’ conditioning trying to help those who need it, and you don’t need a motivation to do the right thing.
Tumblr media
This brings us to Penny Polendina and her father Pietro. I’m so, soooo happy to have Penny back. I have some issues with her return, mainly in that she and Ruby never talk about what happened, But that’s more for when I get to Ruby. But aside from that, Penny was excellent. She’s still the same quirky, sweet girl that we met back early on, but we get much more of her this time. She’s been made Mante’s protector, and it is a duty that he is full-heartedly devoted to. She wants to understand feelings more, like how to balance the things she wants to do with her duties and is confused about how Winter can shove her emotions aside to do what is clearly wrong. Penny may be a robot, but she is by far the most human of the Atlesian cast. It made how broken she was when framed by Tyrian and Watts hurt so much, as well as Ironwood’s comments about how she’s under his control. He talks as though she’s just another robot soldier, and you can see how much that hurts her. But at the very end, she proved how goodhearted she is when she calms/comforts Fria in her final moments, and due to it, Fria chooses her to be the next Winter Maiden. A title that she absolutely deserves.
We can probably thank Pietro for Penny being a good person. He’s just as lively as she is and clearly loves her with all of his heart. I mean he’s given up chunks of his Aura in order to bring her back. That is love, people. While I wish he had more of him (and Maria for that matter), Pietro was so much fun and a welcome addition to the supporting cast. He’s a genius responsible for much of Atlas’ technological achievements, but he also takes time to help those in Mantle. He wanted to create a savior with a soul, which I think says a lot about him as a person. While I wish he and Penny had more interaction, that loving father/daughter bond is there and it helps them both stand out among a cast slowly losing their humanity. I worry for them, especially with Salem having Grimm Monstro on her side, but doesn’t change how happy I was with them here.
Then we, of course, have our main cast… but that is something that we shall cover in Part Two. Stay tuned~
