hello! its paper. been a while hasnt it? i keep meaning to send an ask just to say "hi! im still here!" but i keep forgetting. so i figured id send one now! i do have a sort of question tho. i havent been too aware of your recent interests but the newest one, team starkid i think it is, does seem cool. theyre like musicals right? so im asking if theres like a specific one i should start with first or if i can just go to whatever basically. bonus points for summaries of the plots :]
PAPER ANONNNN ITS BEEN SO LONG ITS NICE TO SEE U AGAIN!!!!!!! hope ur well!!! u caught me at the perfect time actually i am in the exact mood to activate Infodump Attack
SO !! team starkid !! they r a group who writes & performs original musicals. these range from parodies like Twisted (Aladdin, but from Jafar's POV) to the thing theyre most known for- the Hatchetfield universe
Hatchetfield is the name of a town on a fictional island in Lake Michigan in which this series/these musicals take place. Within the Hatchetfield universe there is TGWDLM, Black Friday, and Nightmare Time. Everything in the Hatchetfield universe is best described as horror comedy, and it does get quite dark at times.
TGWDLM (which stands for The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals) is where I would recommend you start. It's the easiest for a new Starkid viewer to understand, is almost entirely self-contained (bonus lore from other content is FUN but not at all NEEDED or important to understanding anything). It tells the story of Paul, the titular Guy Who Doesn't Like Musicals, and what happens to him when a meteor crashes into Hatchetfield and causes everyone to start singing and dancing! I would honestly recommend it anyways just because it's a really fun watch regardless. Warnings: guns, character death, [fake] blood & guts, body horror, mind control. Also, a song near the beginning has very explicit (sexual) lyrics.
Black Friday is best viewed as a sequel to TGWDLM. It gets a little more into the lore and sets up more of the overarching world. I honestly like Black Friday better than TGWDLM, but it is also even darker & more lore-heavy. Also it can be confusing on your first watch. It follows various citizens trying to buy a new toy called a Wiggly for Christmas, and the subsequent events that causes. Warnings: death, [fake] blood (not a ton! Less than TGWDLM), what could easily be seen as mob mentalities/near mind control, guns, what could be seen as stalking/hunting people.
Nightmare Time is best seen as a series of podcasts/seperate "episodes." You can listen to just the audio if you want, you won't miss anything important (although the actors are AMAZING so I would definitely say watching it is worth it). There are two seasons, which have 3-4 episodes each. They elaborate a LOT on the lore/world of Hatchetfield. If you need individual tws, they should be in the video descs. I will warn you the Hatchetfield series is very dark. I love it and it is a LOT of fun though! Latte Hatte is the #4 cause of my homosexuality (/silly). also nb rep that i as a nb person very much enjoy!! also more of lauren lopez being iconic. also a KILLER theme song.
Also recommended outside of Hatchetfield are Trail to Oregon & Firebringer. I personally don't love the amount of toilet humor in Trail to Oregon, but it's still a fun musical and the acting is phenomenal as always. Firebringer has iconic songs, a HILARIOUS narrator character, leabians, and Lauren Lopez as the lead. there is literally nothing more you could ask for. it's perfect. Gods I love Lauren Lopez she's so iconic.

one thousand and one nights with you (is not enough to spend)
note from kin: the title is from that song in twisted by starkid, but that’s about as far as the similarity goes
anyway you’re visionless and basically run a little witch shop in mondstadt, with flowers and cool gemstones and mysterious powders and potions and stuff. albedo gets a lot of his alchemy ingredients from you (also he’s dating you but not a lot of people know that)
fandom: genshin impact
character(s): gn! reader, albedo, plus a surprise venti cameo
pairing(s): albedo/reader
warning(s): i don’t know albedo that well so he might be ooc? also this is so cheesy it’s a little ridiculous
genre: fluff
Tumblr media
“I’ll be going now, boss!”
You smile and return your assistant’s cheery goodbye wave as he disappears off into the night outside, freshly-filled coin pouch jingling at his hip. As the door swings shut with quiet click, your surroundings fall into quietude.
The candles keeping the room lit are beginning to burn down to stumps, throwing most of your shelves into shadow. You take a sip from the steaming cup sitting on your counter, then stand up to begin taking inventory and closing up shop.
The silence is comforting after such a long day. You’re not entirely sure what brought on the sudden increase in customers, given that your shop is tucked away in a quiet little corner of Mondstadt that not many tend to linger around. That had been a deliberate choice, and so was the lack of advertising - your speciality is the individual, not the crowd.
Still, you can’t say that it isn’t nice to have the increased income. More profit means better wages for your assisstant - and more Mora to buy even more cool things to stock.
You pass about an hour ambling around your shop, rearranging your products and making sure that everything is in order. Then, just as the bat-shaped clock on the wall chimes one o’clock, the bell above the front door jingles, and you hear quiet footsteps enter.
You don’t pay it any mind at first, instead focusing on rearranging the little bottles of various dusts and extracts on one of the ingredients shelves. A hand settles on the small of your back, and you feel the new arrival’s presence come to a stop beside you.
“We’re out of powdered lizard tail,” You say without looking at him.
A pause. Then a quiet chuckle. “That’s how you want to start the night?”
You smirk. “The night started a good while ago, darling.”
Albedo sighs as you turn to face him, though his soft smile betrays his faux-exasperation. “I did tell you I’d be late today.”
“You tell me that you’ll be late every day,” You reply, sliding one final bottle of powdered crystalfly into place, then move over to sit on your front counter. He follows, settling just beside you.
“I have a lot of things that need attending to,” He shrugs, leaning over and snatching your drink without asking. You shake your head, but let him take a sip from it anyway.
His eyes flicker up to look at you over the rim of the mug. “...though, of course, you’re the most important one.”
You laugh and bat at his shoulder. He doesn’t make any effort to avoid it, eyes twinkling as you smile. “Why not come round more often if I’m so important, huh?”
“Do you think I wouldn’t if I could?” He asks with a scoff, setting down the mug and gently nudging you in the side. “We both have jobs, [Name]. We need to actually do them.”
“Oh, I know that,” You return his nudge and hop down from the counter again. Albedo sighs a little at your restlessness, but follows as you swipe the keys from your drawer and open the door again. “But it doesn’t hurt to take a day off every now and then.”
“I’ve already taken far more in the last month than is reasonable,” Albedo says with a shake of his head, stepping out into the street at your indication and waiting as you shut and lock the door. “Grandmaster Jean will get suspicious.”
“Psh,” You dismiss, waving a whimsical hand about and nearly knocking the sign off of your door. “Why is it that you’re not telling her about us, again?”
“She doesn’t exactly like you,” He says, absently linking his hand with yours as the two of you begin walking aimlessly in no direction in particular. He’s removed his gloves, you notice. “You did set up shop without permission when you first got here.”
“Ah, right…” Now that you think about it, you seem to remember her shooting you a rather nasty look when you passed her in the street last week. Why she continues to hold a grudge is lost on you - after all, you did get the necessary documentation and everything eventually… though, to be fair, the method you used wasn’t exactly legal. “...well, forget her.  What do you want to do tonight?”
“Hmm,” He swings your linked hands about for a moment. “I saw a lot of dandelions growing just outside the walls earlier. Why don’t we go pick some seeds?”
“If you want to pick dandelion seeds, why not ask Sucrose?” You ask as he begins leading you in the direction of the main gate. “She’s the one with the Anemo vision.”
“Sucrose?” Albedo repeats, turning his head to look at you. His irises almost seem to glow in the darkness of the night, brighter than any of the stars above - it’d be unsettling if it wasn’t so beautiful. “Why would I want to go seed-picking with her?”
You raise an eyebrow. “...well, I’m assuming you need them for an experiment, and Anemo-blown sunflower seeds are always far more effective in that area.”
“If I needed them for an experiment, I’d just buy them from your shop,” He shakes his head. “This isn’t an ingredient hunt. This is different - it’s special.”
“Special how?” You question as the two of you walk through the gate. Albedo guides you over to a particularly thick cluster of dandelions just a few feet away, nestled in a lush copse of grass.
“Special… like you.” He cups both his hands around one of yours, the one that he’d been holding just before, and guides it over to one of the tallest plants. “Go on, show me that trick again.”
You laugh a little at his almost childish inflection, but do as he requests anyway. Albedo pulls his hands away from yours and watches as you carefully pluck off the head of the dandelion without disturbing any of its fluff-topped seeds, allowing it to rest on the tips of your fingers.
“There’s no trick to having a delicate hand,” You say as he watches your every move with the utmost concentration. “It just takes practice.”
Carefully securing the little bit of stem left at the bottom of the dandelion head between your index finger and thumb, you slowly raise your hand so that it’s suspended just above Albedo; he ducks his head a little, closing his eyes as you bring up your other hand to ever-so-gently flick the seeds from the head. The seeds drift about in the still night air for a brief moment before landing in Albedo’s blonde hair; their white colour is barely distinguishable against it.
He opens his eyes again as you pull your hands down again, lifting his head slowly so as not to disturb the little decorations you’ve added to it. “...so what did you grant me this time?”
“A good night’s sleep,” You say playfully. “As the seeds are carried away on the wind, so too will all your worldly burdens be blown away.”
He shakes his head, and several seeds are dislodged by the motion, vanishing quickly into the night. “If only it were that easy.”
“Hey, it worked last time,” You counter, sitting down in the grass. Albedo follows suit, reaching out and plucking a dandelion of his own - though with a lot less deftness than you did.
“That wasn’t the dandelions,” He says plainly, blowing lightly on the dandelion and watching the fluff disperse and disappear into the dark. “I just sleep more soundly when you’re beside me.”
You chuckle. “Sweet talker. So you’d sleep like a baby if I was around all the time, then?”
“Perhaps I would half the time,” He answers, smiling in a way that tells you that he knows exactly how sappy what he’s about to say is. “But I wouldn’t sleep nearly as well for the other half. I’d be too busy looking at you.”
Despite already knowing that it was coming, you can’t help but feel your heart flutter slightly at his proclamation. “I could say the same about. Bet you’ve broken a good few hearts with looks like that.”
“Then so be it,” He shrugs, eye-lids falling a little as he gives you a devilish little smirk. “Yours is the only one I care about.”
“When did you get so charming?” You flick him in the nose, effectively wiping off the smug look on his face. “Have you been studying love poems or something?”
“Love poems aren’t really my area,” He says, drawing back and rubbing at his nose a little reproachfully. “But Lisa and Kaeya have been giving me plenty of tips on my… 'romantic endeavours’, as they say.”
“Those two…” You shake your head. Kaeya and Lisa managed to find about your relationship with Albedo almost as soon as he’d confessed to you, though luckily they’d agreed to try not to mention it around Jean. “Have those tips been working?”
“Isn’t that a question for you to answer?” He picks another dandelion and blows it directly at you. “Is your heart being stirred?”
“Not while you’re blowing seeds into my face, it isn’t,” You shield yourself with one hand, pushing it in front of Albedo’s face to obscure his field of vision. “Quit it!”
He does drop the dandelion at your request, but, unusually, doesn’t give you a verbal response. You’re just thinking that he must be planning something when he suddenly leans forward and kisses the centre of your palm.
You immediately pull your hand back, feeling yourself heat up. Albedo leans forward, cocking his head to the side with a smile. “What about now?”
“You’re insufferable,” is your only reply.
Albedo’s smile turns into another smirk. He knows exactly what he’s doing. “I’m yours.”
“Mine, now? How nice,” You say, still trying to act unbothered. You can tell it isn’t working, though.  “Am I allowed to get a refund if you don’t work as expected?”
“Would you ever want to return me?” Albedo counters. You can’t exactly say yes - that’s both mean and untrue -  so you just sigh and shake your head. He smiles, clearly pleased.
You’re about to say something else when you hear a series of uneven footsteps coming from the gate. It doesn’t sound like a Knight of Favonius on patrol - in fact, it sounds more like a drunkard.
Albedo shuffles a little closer to you as a figure stumbles out of the gates. It’s someone you vaguely recognise by their green clothes - the bard who often plays in front of the statue of Barbatos. He’s holding a bottle that’s already half-empty, and you have a feeling that he’s already had a lot more before it.
The bard looks over at you and Albedo, and while you doubt he can recognise your faces what with both the darkness and the distance, it’s obvious enough that the two of you aren’t just a pair of good buddies hanging out. He raises the bottle in your direction with a hiccup.
“Wonderful night to meet a lover!” He calls, voice ringing so loudly that you’re sure that he just woke up a few residents of the city. “May your relationship last long as the wind blows!”
He doesn’t wait for a response before beginning to stumble his way across the bridge. As he goes, he exclaims to no one in particular, “The air is crisp tonight! Such good wine - what a wonderful city!”
He quickly disappears into the darkness. You exchange looks with Albedo. “...how much do you think he drank?”
“Far too much,” He replies amusedly. “He’ll regret it come morning.”
“And it isn’t too far off now,” You say, checking your pocket watch. “Will you be heading back to headquarters tonight?”
He considers, then shakes his head. “I don’t have anything that’ll need attention tomorrow morning. So, if you’ll have me…”
He doesn’t finish, but you already know what he’s asking. “There’s always room for you to stay over - you should know that by now, shouldn’t you?”
He smiles a little bashfully at that, and nods. “I suppose so… thank you.”
“You might as well move in at this point,” You comment, shifting slightly on the spot and patting at his arm. He holds his hand out obligingly, and you thread your fingers through his. “You’ve left at least three sets of pyjamas over already.”
Albedo opens his mouth to respond, and you shake your head, placing the index finger of your free hand to his lips to shush him. “Yeah, yeah, I got it, Grandmaster Jean’ll get suspicious…”
He blows on your finger to get you to retract it. When that doesn’t work, he pretends to bite at it, which is a lot more effective. “...I will tell her eventually. Just not now.”
“While you’re on the rocks,” You say with a nod, squeezing his hand. He sighs and nods as well. “But I still don’t think she’d fire you over who you’re dating.”
“Maybe not, but I don’t want to get any more on her bad side,” He mumbles. “She’s still annoyed about that floor I melted.”
“Didn’t you tell her that I was the one who made you drop the potion?” You ask, thinking back to that particular day - when you’d learnt that Albedo is very susceptible to your flirting when he’s in the middle of an experiment.
He shakes his head with a chuckle. “I didn’t think you’d appreciate me tattling. Besides, it isn’t like she punished me.”
“Well, you’re basically untouchable at the end of the day,” You comment, lying back in the grass and pulling Albedo with you. “It’s them who need you, not the other way around.”
“I wouldn’t say that,” He says, adjusting himself so that the two of you are pressed flush against each other. “If I hadn’t started working for them, we’d never have met.”
“We would have crossed paths eventually,” You say, smiling coyly when he turns his head to face you. “Though better sooner than later, I suppose.”
“Far better sooner,” He says, returning your smile with a much softer one. “I’m glad we did.”
Another dandelion seed drifts out of his hair and lands in the grass as you look at him. You'll be keeping this one for a long time, you decide. Probably forever. You like him.
You think he likes you, too.

✨Ranking of Black Friday songs✨
17- Monsters And Men (Reprise)
Rewatched Black Friday recently while this one is still good, I just feel like McNamara didn't need another song. The ending with the scream overlap is nice though!
16- Wiggly Jingle
Tumblr media
Do I need to say anything about this one? I get it's meaning in the context of the show but I shit you not when I first watched Black Friday I was unsure if this one was meant ironic or not. I was a little scared the whole show was going to be like this at first. I don't really like the song itself but the choreography is great!
15- Monsters And Men
Tumblr media
Haven't really gotten into this one yet, I realize that it's good but it's just not that catchy to me as of now. The ending is pretty great though.
14- Adore Me
Great acting on Lauren's part. A bit slow for my taste and short but ut was supposed to be longer so I get why they cut it. Also really funny ending. Love the choreography.
13- Califor.M.I.A
Always great when that song starts while your mom is around. Anyways. I like the energy of this one, while the letter part is a little long and I wish the "that's not how cameras work babe" part would have been included on the cast recording, it's still pretty good. Also relatable.
12- Wiggle
Tumblr media
I was a little sad that Lauren didn't get any great songs in Black Friday, but I've come to like her songs quite a lot lately. Especially the dance break at the ending of this one is pretty cool. I am not a fan of the stylistic singing choices on Lauren's part if I'm honest but to give her credit the song is pretty much the lowest she has had to sing.
11- Deck The Halls
Really catchy and funny to watch if you've seen way too many Christmas/holiday movies, but I kinda dislike that the entire dialogue was kept on the cast recording. But sidenote, I love the fact that they included this movie so well in the show and also referenced it in NMT. A bop overall and even funnier because of how straight it is played.
10- Made In America
Tumblr media
Yes I got into this song not so long ago but Joey is (I know I have said this way too many times on this list) low key terrifying. He did a great job though. Also I skip the Wiggly part because it still feels weird to me. Joey really flexed his wagon on fire muscles here.
9- If I Fail You
Tumblr media
I feel like this one is very similar to What Tim Wants, not only because they are sung by the same character and are about the literal same topic, they're also quite similar in melody because the second part is a reprise. Either way, it's a good song (if not a little long). Also considering I love What Tim Wants, to me it gets considerably better when the melody transitions to the second part.
8- What Do You Say
Also a great song. That's it. A little slow but really cute and it has a well timed ending. All the group numbers have a special place in my heart because the cast is so fucking talented. Also this one is very funny too.
7- Our Doors Are Open
Tumblr media
Also a little slow for my taste but I love that Corey had a chance to shine here. The more I listen to it the more I appreciate the song.
6- Black Friday
Tumblr media
Jesus. There have been many different interpretations of this song, and I still like the overall "I'm going to die, fuck you all" vibe. And while it is about her near death experience and I relate to it for that I think everyone can relate to the hopeless feeling of having to give up before you even had the chance to try something. The song is sad as fuck.
5- Do You Want To Play?
At first I thought this one was boring but the harmonies... Besides the fact that the song deeply terrifies me, I have to say that the part where they suddenly start screaming/laughing (u know the part) is chilling and sounds amazing at the same time.
4- What If Tomorrow Comes
Tumblr media
Overall this is a good finale and especially the ending gives me chills every time, but I feel like it repeats itself. Starkid finale songs tend to be very loud and dynamic, but in this case I feel like the seriousness of the show is matched better with a cautious song like this one.
3- Take Me Back
Also listen to this one on repeat. The actors' voices match well and this song has a strong emotional core and yes I have belted this when I was home alone.
2- Feast Or Famine
Tumblr media
I mean the hunger games character of this one is just overwhelming. Honestly this song describes the whole show, and it's super fun to listen to.
1- What Tim Wants
I get this is a controversial opinion but this is 100% the best song. I feel like Dylan is great in this one and the relationship between Tim and Tom is delivered perfectly. Usually solos rank low on my lists by default because I like change within the songs and group harmonies and that stuff, which proves how great this song is even more. Love this one, no notes.
Do you agree? Love to chat about Black Friday so feel free to dm/comment!

Are there any fairly obscure books, movies, plays, historical events etc. that haven’t been made into musicals yet that you would love to see made into musicals?
Well idk if they are obscure but I have TONS of things I would like to see as musicals. Honestly this question is so exciting.
First off I was gonna include "Como agua para chocolate" de Laura Esquivel but I found out throughPlaybill that is gonna happen so I am super excited to see how that turns out.
So yeah here is my list:
BOOKS:
"Mas rápido que el deseo" by Laura Esquivel. (This is a beautiful love story told from a dying father to her only daughter, and the way sound is used in the book always made me think how beautiful it would be to see it as a musical)
"Aura" by Carlos Fuentes (this one made me think how few "thriller" musicals we have and Aura would be incredibly easy to produce cuz there are very few characters and you wouldn't need a big production. It tells the story of a young man who comes to leave with a Window and her niece with whom he falls in love only to discover a reeaaaally creepy secret)
"Amor en tiempos de cólera" by Gabriel Garcia Marqués (This one is an epic and long love story, I think it has the potential to be as legendary as Le Mis or Phantom)
"Leonora" by Elena Poniatowska (this is the novelization of Leonora Carrington's life, she has a lot of contact with diverse artist of her time such as Miró, and deals w her struggles w mental illness)
"Duerme" by Carmen Boullosa (this one is about a young woman during Colonial era in México, she dresses as a man is quite unconventional . It's historical background is also super intresting )
"Northanger Abbey" by Jane Austen (according to Google there has been a musical adaptation but I would like it if this was given more of a SIX or &Juliet approach, I mean c'mon Catherine is pretty young and has these wild fantasies cuz she is such a bookworm they would be so funny to see on stage)
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden (this would be kinda hard to adapt but I just think it would be visually gorgeous)
"Middlemarch" by George Elliot (I think it has so much potential to be an amazing musical i just imagine the selfrighteous Dorothea singing about how she wants a pious and intelligent men who guides her and opposes her ideas at the beginning of the musical and then a reprise trying to pretend she has got her way in marrying Casaubon. Kind of like a "Thank Goodness" moment.)
"Foul is fair" by Hannah Capin (this one is quite a recent book, it's a retelling of Macbeth and it blew me away. It would be more of an edgy musical like Heathers, but the message is more about rape culture )
"Like a Love Story" by Abdi Nazemian (this one tells the story of 3 teens meeting on 1989 and bending through Madonna while fighting for LGTBQ+ rights. Ofc this would have to be a jukbox musical and honestly I can't think of a better way to make a musical w Madonna songs)
"The Queen of the Night" by Alexander Chee (maybe a bit too on the nose, cuz it already has a musical element, but honestly the story is just amazing and pretty dynamic)
"Space Opera" by Catherynne M. Valente (again quite a recent book but it draws so heavily from the Eurovision song contest, and it's fun and campy. Also why aren't there more Sci-fi musicals???)
MOVIES
"Ladyhawke" (I used to love this movie when i was younger and would love to see it as a musical)
"10 things I hate about you" (why isn't this a musical already??? The movie is iconic, it's a fun Shakespeare retelling, would have such fun songs)
"The lost boys" (ok so I know vampire musicals haven't fared well, but I think that's cuz the approach is waaay to serious, honestly this would make for a campy fun musical with some amazing costumes)
"Rocketman" (C'mon this writes itself. Like it would work perfectly for a stage adaptation)
"The corpse bride" (it already has a couple of songs and honestly it would be so cool visually)
"Twilight " (HEAR ME OUT!!! This one should only be made by Starkid cuz it shouldn't be taken seriously it should be a fun parody of the YA literature at the time with lots of selfawareness, and sarcástic humor. I put this one on the movie category cuz let's be honest the movies had some killer soundtrack)
"My Best friend's wedding" (I mean the Pretty woman musical was ok i guess but this one already has an iconic music scene, and I think the story work better for a musical)
"Dirty Dancing" (again c'mon why isn't this a musical but Ratatouille got so much hype on tiktok???? Like this would have gorgeous dance numbers, humor, heartbreaking scenes)
"Dangerous Liaisons" (I know there is a musical based on the modern adaptation "Cruel Intentions" but this movie was amazing! Like i think this version would work better for the stage)
PLAYS
"A Streetcar named desire" by Tennessee Williams (so there is an opera and that hillarious Simpson's episode but I really would love to see this one as a musical )
"El burlador de Sevilla" by Tirso de Molina (I am a fan of Don Juan Tenorio, but I think El burlador would work better for a musical, the ending works better and it's female characters are waaaaay more intresting and fleshed out)
"La casa de Bernarda Alba" (I think this would be amazing, I picture Bernarda as an alto the story is super character driven and there is a lot of internal monologues that could translate perfectly into songs)
"Turandot" (so this is an opera but I think this one would be an amazing option for a musical, the main themes of the show are love an revenge , ofc it would have to be re worked as much of the names and settings reek of Orientalism , like idk what Puccini was doing giving characters names like Ping, Pang, Pong but yeah it has the potential)
"Machinal" by Sophie Treadwell (this is one of my favorite plays, it's set on the 20's and I think it would make a great musical with a tragic ending we all see coming)
"Uncommon women and others" by Wendy Wesserstein (this is about a bunch of woman who reconect at a lunch and they start talking about their time as college students during the second-wave feminism and how they discovered themselves through it )
"Awake and Sing!" By Clifford Odetts (first off the title rocks so fitting for a musical, then we have the story of Jewish immigrants on the Bronx pursuing the American Dream)
HISTORICAL EVENTS
- I would love to see a musical about the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, like most productions back then were musicals and it would reintroduce to the world iconic mexican actors such as Pedro Infante, Silvia Pinal, Jorge Negrete, Dolores del Río, etc etc.
-A musical about the artists of the Italian renaissance. I would do this in the style/tone of Something Rotten!
-A musical about Leona Vicario .
-A musical about real pirates like Madame Cheng
-I know it's a Biblical story so maybe not true but I think it'd be cool to see a musical about King Ahasuerus, Vashti and Esther .
And that’s all I can think of the top off my head.

The Haunting of Villa Diodati
I get to watch Doctor Who on my TV. Yay! First time in weeks there isn’t a Super Bowl or award show.
I literally forgot Cyberman were even coming to this season until I saw commercial advertising the rest of the season that played just now before the episode is starting. But that’s not until the finale I guess.
COSTUMES. PERIOD. COSTUMES. God I love historical episodes. Lord Byron!?!?!?! MRS. SHELLEY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? YESSSSSSSSS Oh I am just so happy right now. At first I was like “Oooohh Northanger Abbey vibes” but no it’s like actual gothic novelists not a girl obsessed with them. Oh Fam. CAN’T SEE THE (ok I don’t know what I started typing here, the next line got me too excited and I forgot to come back to this one) “Because it is a truth universally acknowledged” AHHHHHH. I LITERALLY SCREAMED. IT WAS PROBABLY MORE OF A SQUEAK/SHRIEK THAN A SCREAM BUT STILL. GRAHAM. A MAN AFTER MY OWN HEART. “And nobody snog Byron.” I can’t. AHHH COUNTRY DANCING. Guys. Guys. GUYS. Is this episode made specifically for me!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Well, I’ve never read any Byron or Shelley, but regency era?!?!?! I completely adore it. This poor butler. “How about writing the most gruesome, spine-chilling ghost story of all time?” Doctor. Try to be a bit more subtle.
*Something coming out of the painting* Me: *Thinking of the Kasavin* No... *Something small breaks out of the painting* Me: Oh ok Skeleton hand: *Crawls* Me: NO.
Noooooo there’s a disappearing lady. Oh no Graham’s in a loop. NOOO THERE’S A CHILD. This is like actually creepy. “His answers only increase the enigma” “I know someone like that.” Cue the screams of every Doctor/Yaz shipper ever. Annnndddddd there’s the hand....
This episode. Is like. Everything I want. Period costumes, Regency specifically. Ghosts. Skeletons. Jane Austen references. Country Dances. Love love love love LOVE.
Oh and of course the Doctor gets to wear another outfit, or at least a new vest. Which I love. I want to see what the detailing is. Oh no. Oh NO. BYRON DON’T YOU DARE HIT ON THE DOCTOR. NO. “But she always said there’s no reason not to try.” Awwwwwww. Yeah, how have we met both Ada and Lord Byron in the same season... there’s gotta something there.... Oh Fletcher. He’s so annoyed. He’s either evil or the best person here. THANK GOD FOR FLETCHER. Oh Doctor don’t taste that oh Doctor baby no.... I love/hate Byron being in love with the Doctor. I love it so much but I hate it so much. See. I don’t know enough about Byron. But I vaguely knew he was like... super creepy. And... keeping a 300 year old skeleton from a battle is definitely creepy. “One hand gone.” “Both hands gone.” OH GREAT. DON’T. DON’T EAT THINGS GIVEN BY GHOSTS. OR IS IT FAERIES? EITHER WAY. NO. I mean I guess Graham has no clue. BUT STILL. They’re in a loop too. Byron, stop looking at her like that. Stop it. I refuse. Everyone’s in a loop. Annnndddd that’s a ghost. WAIT IS THE BABY ADA?! Oh no wait never mind it’s William. And yeah ok that’s a person over the lake. NOOOOOOOOOO. NOOOO HE DID NOT JUST WALK THROUGH A WALL. I SAID NO OUT LOUD. Like a dream? Was Poli asleep earlier when Graham got lost? Are they in his dream or something? Did Byron just hide behind her? Oh you coward. Not worthy of my Doctor. “May just say you are quite lovely in a crisis?” OH SHUT UP. A PERCEPTION FILTER?!!?!?!? Yeah ok that’s not fun. A skeleton in the place of a baby. That’s messed up. I feel like so much has happened, but it’s only been a half hour. There’s still 40 minutes, we’re not even halfway through. Where is this going? Also, I’m enjoying it a lot. This isn’t a TARDIS is it? Will the Master pop up? This isn’t like Hide is it? A traveler who we think is evil but is just lost? NOOOOOOO. OH NOOO. I JUST SCREAMED “NOOOOOO” IN COMPLETE AND UTTER FEAR. ANYTHING BUT A CYBERMAN PLEASE.
I didn’t think we’d see the lone Cybermen until the end of the season. I literally rationalized myself into being shocked. If I hadn’t seen the promo, I would have forgotten we’d Cybermen at all, but then I convinced myself we wouldn’t get them yet, and it surprised me.
So. Not like Hide. Definitely evil.
“I will not lose anyone else to that.” OH GOD WHY MUST YOU REMIND ME OF BILL. IT’S BEEN ALMOST 3 YEARS AND I’M NOWHERE NEAR RECOVERED FROM THAT PAIN. DOES HE HAVE A HUMAN EYE? HE’S TRULY UNFINISHED. WAIT THAT’S HALF A NORMAL FACE. NOT THE BABY. This nanny is like the best person ever. I appreciate her trying to save the baby. She did not deserve to die. Oh god it has one human hand. He tried to kiss the baby?!?!?!!? Yaz my girl no you don’t. Don’t look for loopholes. Oh spoilers from the closed captions I guess. It said “Ashad: Funny” so I’m guessing its name is Ashad, and that that’s going to be revealed at some point. I just remembered that the Cyberwoman was also a Chibnall story. Is this his patrially-converted-Cyberman redemption? Yeah the writing on the wall is creepy... Someone get Shelley some help. Who plays the Cyberman? Imagine if we get one of those Cyberbeast things from the Next Doctor. That’d be fun. Maybe I just want to see them again. Oh not Fletcher. “Guard him well.” Soooooo is Byron now a guardian of some sort... Oh cool, Shelley can fight back a bit. Oh great it’s in him. That’s great. That’s fun. Fantastic. Was it Jack who sent it back? Or maybe the Master? Oooh the Doctor is going off on Ryan. That’s some anger. “It’s a mountain. With me in the summit, in the stratosphere, alone. Left to choose.” Oh GOD Doctor. She’s just letting it all out. “A composite of parts?” Oh ok so there’s that inspiration. I was wondering why he hadn’t take the baby with him. I guess he did spare him. Well that sucks. He’s a lone Cyberman, what ship does he have? “We are inevitable.” THE APOTHEOSIS???? Sorry, had to make a StarKid reference. Doctor. Doctor. You had ONE job. Jack told you to do ONE THING. Ok well at least the Doctor’s like “Oh no I am well aware what I did was dumb but I will fix it.” She’s truly learned since she became the Time Lord Victorious when he didn’t care. I’m Mr. Poli half laughing as Miss Clairmont roasts Byron. I had forgotten about the lady and the child for a while though... I did wonder at one point how they fit into all this... and then forgot to keep wondering...
So that was a REALLY fun episode! I am happy with it!
Loved the costumes especially, but that’s just me nerding out.
This episode had me screaming “NOO” out loud multiple times so that’s fun.
I just checked IMDB to look at the cast since so many people looked familiar to me. And I realized that Nicholas Briggs was apparently playing the Cyberman voice again. That makes me so happy.
Update: I actually started proofreading this, then realized the ice cream place near me was closing in a half hour. So I stopped, left and got ice cream, and now i’m back. Yay! Doctor Who and ice cream! And I have the day off tomorrow!
Anyway. Yay! A better partially-converted-Cyberman story! IMDB says Chibnall didn’t write this one, but it’s in his era so I guess we can consider it like a half-redemption.
(Also I don’t even hate Cyberwoman as much as other people do. My biggest complaint with Cyberwoman was her design since they put her in a bikini and heels. The bikini could be justified that it uses less metal and conserves resources, that I can almost accept, but the heels have no justification.)

SPOILERS: Aladdin (2019) - Review/Thoughts
So I just watched the new Aladdin at the cinema where I work (yay for free tickets, am I right), and I just wanted to do what I usually do and discuss some of my thoughts after seeing it.
Just as background, I of course grew up watching the animation; while it wasn’t my favourite Disney film, it was still one that I watched often and knew well. When they announced that they were remaking it, I was very apprehensive because obviously no one can beat Robin Williams’ Genie - no one. He improvised a lot of his stuff and there was hours of content that were unused because of how brilliant he was. So in that sense I’m a bit biased, but I’m not such a hardcore fan that the slightest deviation from the story makes me mad.
Anyway, moving on!
!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I’m honestly glad they didn’t just remake the original frame for frame - I always feel that remakes should at least try to improve on the original, or try to change a few things just to keep it more original.
Naomi Scott as Jasmine...I mean WOW. We are blessed. I was so thrilled to have a slightly more active feminist Jasmine - obviously in the animation she’s pretty feminist but in this they made her more so in all the right ways
Mena Massoud did pretty great as Aladdin to be fair, though I was surprised Aladdin was way more awkward at certain points in this film
The soundtrack is so good, to be honest - I’m not as familiar with the songs in Aladdin as I am with other Disney movies but I still think all of the songs had a nice charm
“Speechless” — I LOVED BOTH TIMES THIS SONG WAS SUNG, I AM SO GLAD JASMINE HAD HER OWN SONG
I am very curious about what happened to Jasmine’s mum?? They say that she was killed but never expand on it - I was half expecting to learn that Jafar offed her or something
I feel like they tried to imply a backstory to Jafar...but all I got from it was that he was tired of being second best and that he wanted to be all powerful
I mean, Marwan Kenzari wasn’t a bad Jafar, he just didn’t come across as scary or threatening as he probably should have
Oh god I love Abu 🐒
Shoutout to the Magic Carpet for making me think it was really dead at the end, oh my god my heart stopped
I wasnt quite sure how I felt about Jasmine having a handmaiden in the film since I’m the original the point is that she’s alone and has no one but Rajah to talk to. But I actually really liked the addition of Dalia to the film in a weird way
I KNEW right at the start that the Genie had married the fucking handmaiden and had kids with her, they didn’t show her face but I KNEW, IT WAS SO OBVIOUS
The scene where Aladdin is trying to impress Jasmine while pretending to be Prince Ali? Fucking hilarious 😂 JAMS
I said this before but Princess Jasmine fighting against the men who tell her to know her place? Who tell her to be seen and not heard? I STAN A SULTAN QUEEN
The nostalgia was too real in this movie to be honest, like I feel that if you have never watched the original, you probably wouldn’t feel the same as someone else watching who HAS seen the original
I can’t believe they had Aladdin practically break dance and do back flips in this movie
Other than that, the dancing sequence at the party was pretty cool
JASMINES OUTFITS WERE FABULOUS THATS ALL
I really had to refrain from thinking Twisted/Starkid jokes during the film, I’m so sorry but it’s true
At one point Aladdin is asked to point out on a map where his fake country (Ababwa?) is and the Genie puts Sleeping Beauty’s castle with the name “Fantasyland” on the map - this is so clearly a Disneyland Parks reference 😂 It literally looks exactly like it does on the map for Disneyland Paris
Also, I love that when they showed drawings of the Genie (on the map/hierarchy chart I think) they used a drawing of the animated Genie 🧞‍♂️
“A Whole New World” was very pretty - not quite the caliber of the animated version but still very nice. Obviously there’s more limits with live action than animation, so that makes sense I guess
Iago was SO FREAKY OMG WHY WOULD YOU MAKE HIM THAT BIG EVEN FOR THREE MINUTES
Also way too many shots of Iago flying - like it looked awesome at first but after a while it’s noticeable and tedious :/
RAJAH. THE GOOD BOY. GOOD KITTY. GOOD TIGER. MY BOY 🐯🐅 I LOVE HIM TOO MUCH
Rajah literally nearly took someone’s fucking arm off, I LOVE HIM
Now obviously everyone’s probably wondering about the Genie and like...okay, that deserves its own section because I have some stuff to unpack.
To be fair to Will Smith, he did NOT have an easy job. It was going to be difficult for any actor to play Genie after Robin Williams. He really had a difficult job, and there will always be comparisons being made. I feel for him.
I still prefer Robin Williams’ Genie, but Will Smith wasn’t bad. He was clearly trying to make the character his own whilst still paying tribute to Robin Williams, so I can’t fault him for that.
There were quite a few moments he made me laugh - the scenes where he stands with Aladdin and makes little comments are the best, they had me choking on my Coca Cola!
“I’ve spent 2000 years trapped in a tiny lamp - and this is worse.”
I feel like my only issue with this Genie (other than constantly comparing him to the 1992 Genie) was that he’s such a big character and really over the top - and then the rest of the film is nowhere near as OTT. It feels almost like two different films at times.
I honestly didn’t hate him as the Genie like I thought I would - he’s not Robin Williams but he does his best to make his own Genie and I can respect that.
So would I recommend the film? Sure! It’s not the best Disney film ever made, not even the best remake, and I’m sure lots of people will trash it. It isn’t the best film it could have been either, but as a fun family movie with nostalgic feels, it’s still a good watch. I think people are so prepared to bash it already that they’re not giving it any chances - like I said, it’s nowhere near as good as the original, but it’s still a nice film.
And now here’s a gif of my boy Rajah who wasn’t even a real tiger but still stole the whole movie

✨🏳‍🌈!
I’m gonna answer this with two different fandoms if that’s alright, cause I’m kinda at that point when I’m starting to hit another hyperfixation other than tgwdlm/starkid
✨ for tgwdlm: I took one look at the concept and knew I would fall in love. Sci-fi and musicals are both my absolute favorite genres, plus the mix of comedy and horror that Starkid pulled off was phenomenal. The conflict in being excited every time a character would sing but also knowing that it meant the Hive was winning and taking over the population was really fun. Plus I also am a complete sucker for the shivers of a well pulled off twist ending.
✨ for Star Wars:
(I watched and fell in love with Star Wars around before Force Awakens came out, and my fixation on it is coming back strongly now that the fandom’s been revived by ROS)
I mean I’m sure the majority of people know what’s interesting and fun about it, but again Sci-fi! Space Battles! Blasters! Laser Swords! The Force is such a cool concept, and I also love the idea of the internal conflict between Light and Dark being something that everyone faces and that you can always return to the light and repent for your mistakes, no matter how far gone you think you are.
🏳️‍🌈 for tgwdlm:
Definitely the Paul being autistic headcanon. I gravitated so much to his character even before I thought about it that way, and when I first saw the headcanon everything just fell into place. I really held on to him as a comfort character because of that.
🏳️‍🌈 for Star Wars:
I haven’t been back to this fandom in a while and I can’t remember many headcanon as I had that I was really overly attached to. Honestly I’m quite open to exploring the fandom’s interpretations. I do like the idea of Luke being ace/aro a lot though!

sneak peek; just words - side story
honestly this stupid thing is gonna wind up stupid long this is the break up fic, okay, and it starts off right before the end of ch2 and then carries us into ch3 tho it’s not necessary to read but ANYWAY here are a couple of richard/shiro heavy scenes to apologize for the really stupid long wait??
Of course, it wasn’t that easy. Nothing was, not when it was important and worthwhile, and maybe that was another point against the concept of soulmates. There had to be a reason why the whole world made such a big deal out of it -- couldn’t leave well enough alone; had to make it complicated, and messy -- because that was the real world, real love.
With spring coming in fast basketball practice become longer and even more grueling, and what time Shiro had left was taken up by his advanced classes -- papers and problem sets and readings and oral examinations and extra time in the flight simulators whenever he could squeeze it in -- and the end result was that nothing changed. Richard and Shiro met up here and there throughout the week; an afternoon on Saturdays, sometimes, or a quick hello in the library, strained smiles and stilted conversation and a hesitant holding of hands before it was back to the grind, back to life and its impossible, sweeping current, carrying them along.
But when February hit without pause and all Shiro got for Valentine’s Day was a headache and a B- on his pop quiz in Physics 202, Shiro decided he had to figure out a way to stand firm.
Fight for it, Isaac had said.
Shiro had thought that he was -- that all this time he had fought for it; refusing to give up, to listen to the dark and frightened thoughts that told him he wasn’t good enough to have this; stubbornly holding on to Richard and hope and a possible future that wasn’t preordained. But he hadn’t been. It wasn’t enough just to choose. He had to put in more effort than that.
He had to push. He had to try, even if the possibility of failure was terrifying.
*
| this isn’t doll anymore, Richard | he sent, and then cursed violently and hunched around his phone and added, | cool* i hate autocorrect so much omg |
| you are actually adorable | he got back a moment later, his phone pinging with Richard’s special text alert.
| i’m serious! i didn’t even get to see you on valentine’s day |
He didn’t get a reply to that for four minutes, and after staring between the waiting screen and the slowly changing clock at the top of it, Shiro bit back an unhappy growl. | i’m getting lunch | he finally sent, heart pounding. | and if you don’t want to SERIOUSLY piss me off then you’d better come join me | Then he fumbled the phone, hands shaking; shoved it into his pocket and hurried across the courtyard, heading for the commissary.
He listened for the text alert, but it didn’t come. He went blindly to the shortest lunch line, waiting, but told himself he couldn’t hear the alert over the chatter of the other cadets in the dining hall. He bought his food without registering what he selected, and sat at a table off by the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the courtyard and ate without tasting anything, his phone quiet in his pocket. Shiro was afraid to look.
When he only had an apple left, Shiro forced himself to pull his phone out, thumb it on, and see --
| study group until 1300 hours, starkid. what are you wearing? |
Shiro choked on his bite of apple.
| excuse you |
| babe | sent Richard | i hate study groups you gotta give me something or i’m just gonna expire of boredom and misery | and then, quickly, | i wish i was with you. i’m sorry about vday you know why i couldn’t make it |
| because iverson’s an ass | Shiro agreed, and then he realized that he was relaxed -- the painful tension in his shoulders releasing, his spine curving, his elbows on the table while he bit into his apple and half-smiled at his phone. This felt nice. Even with everything going on they’d at least always been able to do this -- banter back and forth via text like nothing was wrong, for as long as they had the time to spare before their attention was inevitably pulled away.
| soooo what are you wearing |
Shiro grinned, and ducked his head to hide it from any passerby. |  what do you want me to be wearing? |
Then he finished his apple slowly. But there was no response by the time he finished, and he sighed before tucking his phone back into his pocket, gathering up his book bag. Slinging it across his shoulder, Shiro tossed his trash and put away the tray, trying not to be disappointed at the long silence he was receiving but unable to stop himself from moving slowly, taking his time, lingering, like that might make some kind of difference.
Study group, Shiro reminded himself. People surrounding his boyfriend, demanding his attention. Work to be done, lessons to be memorized. There was a time and a place for everything, and sometimes even sexting had to be put on hold, surely, even when it had been nearly two weeks since the last time Shiro had gotten more than a half-distracted make out session and --
A breeze brushed against him; it wasn’t cold, but it wasn’t warm, and Shiro shivered to feel it. The trees groaned, mostly bare this early in the year, and Shiro looked up at them and the way they cut across the pale blue sky beyond, making constantly shifting shapes, never quite willing to settle.
(-- fight for it --)
Shiro pulled out his phone, checked the time, and sent | my room at 1330 or there will be dire consequences Montgomery |
Forty minutes later his phone finally dinged with the alert that made his heart skip a beat, every time.
| sir, yes, sir! |
*
“Hello, Commander,” Richard grinned, leaning against the wall outside of Shiro’s door. He looked tired; shadows beneath his eyes, skin thin and paler than usual; even his hair seemed limp. But still, he waggled his eyebrows suggestively even as Shiro rolled his eyes and stepped aside, letting him in. “Reporting as ordered. What do you -- whoa!”
Shiro had him up against the door, nearly nose to nose.
He knew what he wanted to say -- what he had to say, maybe. He had practiced in front of the mirror on the back of the door, the very same one that Richard was leaning back against that very moment, shifting so that the frame didn’t dig quite so annoyingly into his shoulder. We need to talk, Shiro would say, because I deserve better than this and I refuse to let you give up on us.
“Don’t leave me,” he blurted out, uselessly.
Richard blinked, eyes wide. And then his whole face softened. Shiro had jerked back a few inches in embarrassment at his outburst, face flaming, so he could see the transformation. It looked kind of painful, or maybe that was just the way Shiro’s heart felt, twisting at the sight of such open tenderness.
“Hey,” Richard murmured, and his fingers slipped over Shiro’s hips. “I -- Shiro, you don’t -- you don’t have to worry about that, you know? I love you.”
Shiro breathed unsteadily, watching him.
“Don’t -- God, Shirogane, your eyes should be illegal. Do you have any idea how weak I am to you? C’mere.”
Hands drew him closer, tugging. Shiro let them, not understanding why he was hesitating except for maybe because of how much he wanted this. Was desperate to fix it, to make it work and succeed, to have what he wanted and be certain of it. Richard tipped his forehead against his; they were of a height, now, and Shiro just breathed for a moment, feeling Richard breathe with him.
“I do love you,” Richard whispered, eyes closing. “I think that -- I think I get scared of that, sometimes. How much I love you and how much it’s going to hurt when you leave me.”
“What --”
Richard shook his head; a minute shake that Shiro felt as a pressure against his forehead. His own hands were tight on Richard’s shoulders, now, and Richard was distracted and tense enough that he was holding Shiro’s hips hard enough to bruise; painful, but grounding. A mark on Shiro’s skin that he would actually welcome, for once.
“I’m allowed my fears,” Richard said. “Don’t -- Don’t worry about it, all right? C’mon, just let me love you, okay?”
“You haven’t been doing a very good job of it, lately.”
“True.”
That was all he said -- no actual apology -- but the thing was that Richard sounded like he regretted it, and -- that’s enough, thought Shiro, heart fluttering. You’re forgiven, you were always forgiven, it’s fine it’s fine it’s fine. A tentative happiness -- an even more tentative feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction -- began to wind through him, dizzying.
“I love you, too. But Valentine’s Day still sucked, even if it wasn’t your fault.” This whole semester has sucked, he thought, privately, and even if Valentine’s Day hadn’t actually been Richard’s fault, a lot of the rest of it had been -- but he was happy to let it go. To release that frustration and move on, past it; to cling tight to this moment, instead. Shiro dared to ask, voice a low tease, “Are you going to make it up to me?”
Richard grinned, and now his fingers were rubbing little circles against Shiro’s hips, edging down toward his butt, the touch light and teasing. “Thoroughly,” he promised. “And repeatedly. You gonna let me eat you out?”
“Hng.”
Shiro blinked rapidly and wanted -- desperately -- to say something more coherent, like Oh, well, if you insist, or even, fuck yes!, but was entirely too turned on to manage. By the time the blood stopped rushing quite so loudly in his ears and he might have been able to articulate his enthusiastic consent, Richard already had the door locked behind him and was tumbling Shiro onto the bed with bright, warm laughter.
*
Spring break that year was in March, which Shiro knew, but hadn’t actually managed to factor into the scheme of things. “Sorry, babe,” Richard said, mouth pressed right up against Shiro’s hairline so that the words came out soft and moist. “We’ll miss you at the lake house.”
“Okay,” said Shiro, narrowing his eyes at the ceiling even though he felt loose-limbed and incredible. “Now you’re just being mean. Watch it, or I’m going to have to come up with a proper punishment.” He wondered if this was what make-up sex felt like -- intense and barely controlled; the deep relief of not only getting off, but feeling closer and more intimate with his significant other than he had in months.
It was a good feeling. He was maybe reveling in it.
That it wasn’t, exactly, make-up sex had more to do with neither Shiro nor Richard actually acknowledging a specific fight.
Fight wasn’t even the right word for what it had been -- months of increased tension, snappishness, frustration building and building without anywhere to go. But Shiro was still pretty happy about the resolution, regardless. Somehow, he had managed not to fuck this up just yet. He thought maybe there was nowhere else to go, now, than back to what they had been -- happy together.
“Oh, no,” Richard grinned, stretching showily against Shiro’s side. “That sounds terrifying. Consider me appropriately threatened. I shall now be on my absolute best behavior, scout’s honor.”
“What do scouts have to do with anything?”
Richard snorted and then flopped onto his back, one leg falling off the side of the bed. Immediately, Shiro felt the loss of his warmth and tried not to tense. Their clothes were only half-removed, rumpled wildly and sticking in places. Regretfully, Shiro began to put himself in order. Pants pulled back up, zipped and buttoned, shirt tugged down to hide his skin. Conditioned reflex, and no matter how he hated it he did it anyway; breathed relief when Richard, as always, let him have his boundaries without pressing, or prying.
He thought briefly of Josie, and felt both sorry and overjoyed that he had a partner who did not push, who respected him and his limits.
“I would have liked to see you in a swimsuit,” Richard said instead of answering, a little wistful.
Well, mostly he didn’t push.
Richard scratched at the dark blonde hair that grew in an unfortunately tempting line down from his navel, leaving that sentence up in the air for Shiro to do with what he liked. Shiro stared helplessly at the flat planes of Richard’s stomach, at his hips and his big, bony hand now languidly drawing meaningless patterns on his honey-pale skin, pressing his tongue to the back of his teeth and trying to remind himself that they had literally just achieved orgasm five minutes ago.
Shiro said, “You could send me pictures of your swimsuit,” because he didn’t want to sour the afterglow with guilt about his lack of nudity. Thankfully, Richard only hummed thoughtfully, and then grabbed the waistband of his opened trousers with both hands and slipped them down his hips, toward his knees.
“I think I might,” Richard grinned, kicking his pants off and then twisting up, straddling Shiro. “Now grab the lube. We have two more hours before Sasha gets back and I really want your fingers in my ass, Shirogane.”
“Mission accepted,” Shiro gasped against Richard’s mouth, heat blooming anew within him.
Apparently, unofficial make-up sex for the kind of not-fight the two of them had been having for the last half a year required multiple rounds. Shiro was absolutely not complaining.
*
Rather than March 1st they celebrated his birthday on February 28th. It was more or less everything Shiro wanted -- not perfect, but perfect enough. Richard had gone to him late, near lights out, and kissed him so sweet and slow that Shiro had felt overwhelmed just from that. From a warm mouth and slick tongue and Richard’s hands greedy at the base of his neck, curled around his jaw. “Happy birthday, starkid,” Richard murmured, sliding cheek to cheek for a moment, nuzzling at the base of his ear and the heat between them was slow and dangerous for being so tender.
“Thanks,” Shiro had gasped, ragged, falling. It was dizzying, and he’d said a little stupidly, “Guess I’m legal, now, huh? We can finally have sex.” but it wasn’t too stupid, apparently, or maybe Richard was just stupid for him, because his boyfriend had just laughed, helpless, and kissed him again.

My Review of the Solve it Squad Returns
I am lucky enough to be able to attend Starkid’s shows in Chicago every year and normally just write a short review on here for people who can’t go. (I’ll also give you some info on what other starkids attended the show, along with some pics and maybe some secrets!) Fortunately, this summer, I was also able to attend the Tin Can Brothers’ The Solve it Squad Returns! written by Joey Richter, Brian Rosenthal, and Corey Lubowich. This show was in LA and had a short run of 2 weekends and I am positive I’m not the only one to say it is tragic it didn’t have a longer run. While there are rumors floating around that this show might have a revival in the works, I’m sure as hell glad I was there opening weekend because the energy was phenomenal. I was so glad to be able to talk with my friends and congratulate them on another incredible show.
Tumblr media
(Production photos from tincanbros.com )
Now for the actual review. This show was, without a doubt, the funniest play I’ve ever seen. It follows a parody of the Scooby Doo crew after their dog is brutally murdered (by the way, *SEMI-SPOILER* when the dog is murdered during the opening number, the entire audience gasped, yelled, and busted out laughing at the same time. Truly one of the best uses of black comedy I’ve seen in a while). The band has to get back together on the 10-year anniversary of the dog’s death to solve one last crime and bust the bad guy. Joey Richter, Lauren Lopez, Brian Rosenthal, Ashley Clements, and (new to TCB and Starkid-type operations) Gabe Greenspan form a downright HILARIOUS cast that is also capable of delivering quite a few heart-touching moments in scenes.
Tumblr media
Rosenthal takes a turn at doing what many Starkid fans will equate to the role Richter played in The Trail to Oregon; that is to say quickly and comedically alternating between a dozen roles during the show. While some of this might be haphazard at times, it all plays into the silliness of the show overall, and doesn’t detract from the laughs his lines receive. Richter would be considered the lead, and does a great job— again, not surprising to Starkid fans. What is a nice change of pace, however, is that Richter plays the straight man in this performance instead of the usual goofy dreamer-type he is so well known for. Richter’s character is the one responsible for bring the team back together, which is made difficult by the situations each of the other members are found in, years after their dog sidekick dies. This brings me to Lauren Lopez, who plays the equivalent of Velma. When found ,*SEMI-SPOILER*, Lopez performs a HYSTERICAL pantomimed montage of her character’s drug-filled morning routine. It showed that Lopez has serious physical comedy skills and completely brought the house down. Clements’ character is a parallel of Daphne, and she becomes a celebrity-wannabe with a failing book line. There’s a particular joke that she really nailed, involving Siri that I absolutely loved. Greenspan plays what people would recognize as Fred, the jock and designated hot guy of the group. I mean it sincerely when I say that he stole the show. Greenspan delivered what seems like thousands of jokes with impeccable comedic timing as a gold-hearted, well-meaning, high-spirited, lovable guy and I truly hope we see him in more projects soon.
Tumblr media
As I emphasized before, it seems like there were literally thousands of jokes squeezed into this show’s short 90- minute run time. Many of which flew by so quickly that the audience didn’t even have time to properly laugh at every one. Trust me, I’m not complaining about that. It was awesome. And while the ending was a little predictable, I don’t think anyone really cared because of how much fun the ride to the finish was.
Tumblr media
The set design, done by Robert Manion, is perfect for the show. It is simply comprised of brightly painted doors on flats and a couple tables and chairs. The rest is up to the actors to make obvious for the audience. However, one of my favorite aspects of this show was the sound effects. They were expertly timed and they aided in almost every scene, whether they be seagulls on a beach, creaky doors, or ominous thunder, as well as simple car doors opening and closing… Stuff like that. The amazing June Saito is back with awesome costumes again. Saito has created simple, colorful costumes that go excellently with the show. Corey Lubowich has done an outstanding job directing this show, really bringing the audience into this world of sincerity and hilarity.
Tumblr media
While Starkid fans and even Tin Can Brothers fans might be expecting a musical, don’t be! This show includes one opening number and a closing reprise that are extremely catchy, but that’s all you’ll get as far as original songs. This may dishearten some, but more music would only detract from the wonderfully well-timed show they have created.
Tumblr media
That’s about all I have to say about the actual show, other than if it does make a revival season, GO SEE IT if you can! Also, once it is released on youtube, watch it there too.
Another thing that I really liked was that Starkid fans are honestly the nicest kids in the world. Everyone wants to talk with each other and is sincerely so kind.
One thing you’ll know if you’ve seen starkid shows live in the past is that there are almost always other starkids there watching, especially opening weekend. When I was at the show, Jaime Lyn Beatty, Julia Albain, Nick Lang, Brant Cox, and many Starkid parents were there (for the diehard fans). We sat next to Brian’s mom, whom I hadn’t seen in a long time, so that was nice! Diane also made an appreance (for those of you who know who that is)! My little sister has just recently become a fan and she was basically paralyzed when they all walked in, and even more paralyzed when they were talking to me; it was hilarious. She got to meet every single cast member and every starkid that was there. I also got to catch up with my bff Nick, which is hard to do after a show usually because of the insanity, but we were actually able to talk again, which was awesome.

I learned some cool secrets from talking with my buddies in starkid that I won’t post outright on here, but if anyone wants to message me off anon, I’d be willing to talk!
Long story short: I’m insanely proud of my friends. See Solve it Squad if you can!

Musical Theatre Themed Ask
Okay, I’m gonna answer... all of these! (Because I have a paper to write and zero motivation. And also: musicals.)
Oh, and by the way, I’m going to assume that every “Broadway” is a “Broadway/West End” because Tumblr is a free platform.
1. What was the first musical you saw?
Mary Poppins, West End, 2006 (not 100% sure about the year)
2. What musical got you really  into theatre?
Les Misérables - saw the film, started stalking the actors, you know how it goes.
3. Who was your first Broadway crush?
Aaron Tveit (he’s the main one) and Samantha Barks - like I said, stalking the Les Mis actors...
4. Name three of your current Broadway crushes.
Um... still Aaron Tveit? Plus Rob Houchen (Les Mis London) and Cleve September (In the Heights London and soon Hamilton London) - Also, I get “talent crushes” not physical attraction crushes.
5. Name four of your dream roles.
Only 4? Natalie Goodman, Enjolras, Maureen Johnson, and HERCULES MULLIGAN!!
(I can’t sing, act, or dance, nor am I a man, so...)
6. Favourite off-broadway show:
Heathers and The Last Five Years
7. Favourite cast recording.
Gotta be Hamilton, it’s just such a well-produced album. Bonus points for including nearly the entire show.
8. 2013 Tony opening number or 2016 Tony opening number?
2012? The Book of Mormon thing is just pure gold!
9. Favourite show currently on Broadway.
Broadway: I guess Hamilton - There are way too few that I actually know.
West End: Les Misérables forever!
10. A musical that closed and you’re still bitter about. Rant a bit.
In the Heights London! Though I can’t really complain, they extended their initially run several times and now they’ve cast my amazing Sonny as Laurens/Philip, so... But it was just so good!!
11. Best stage to screen adaptation?
Les Misérables. Controversial, I know, but I usually kind of hate movie musicals. With this one they did something new and different and I think it works. The Last Five Years is pretty good too, though it lost a lot in the adaptation (couldn’t be avoided).
12. Worst  stage to screen adaptation?
Rent. I’m sorry, I love the show, I love the cast, but it all feels so staged and wrong and meh. Also, they cut Goodbye Love and left in fucking Santa Fé which adds exactly nothing to the plot!!
13. Favourite #ham4ham?
Gotta be the Schuyler Georges, but there have been so many great ones...
14. A musical you would love to see produced by Deaf West?
Oh, tricky... Maybe Next to Normal? That has a lot to do with people holding things in and failing to see each others’ struggles.
15. If you could revive any musical, which one would it be and who would you cast in it?
Not exactly a revival, but bring Next to Normal to the West End already! That show’s got a sodding Pulitzer. And London’s only a 2 hour flight away from where I live, not a transatlantic one, so I might actually be able to go see it.
Oh, and give Spring Awakening another chance, West End. Maybe adapt some American Sign Language into British Sign Language and...?
Also, maybe revive Rent, Broadway? (And cast Aaron Tveit as Roger... please?)
16. If you could go to a concert at the 54 below, who’s would it be?
That list would be waaaaaayyy too long...
17. Do you watch broadway.com vlogs? Which one is your favourite?
I’ve seen a few, but I don’t really watch them on a regular basis, so no favourites...
18. Make a Broadway related confession.
I really, really hate South Pacific. It was part of our American drama syllabus, as an example of a musical. Quite apart from the fact that I think it’s a godawful, sort of racist and sexist show (it’s from the 40s, go figure), it displays LITERALLY EVERY cliché about musicals!
19. What do musicals mean to you?
Hard to say... Apart from hours and hours of ALL the emotions, some awesome internet buddies (looking at you, @frei-und-schwerelos), I’ve got generally more interested in and knowledgable about theatre, which is a great asset when you study English. Musicals have also introduced me to a wide range of music I wouldn’t normally listen to and so many talented people I wouldn’t have known about otherwise...
20. Express some love for understudies and swings!
Okay here goes: I went to see the West End production of Memphis because of Killian Donnelly and then he unexpectedly wasn’t on that night - bummer. But then Jon Robyns just knocked it out of the part (and I only ever listened to Avenue Q and Spamalot because I watched clips of him when he was in those shows).
My first Thénardier was Adam Pearce and his version of “It was me wot told you so...” is the funniest one I’ve ever heard (he kind of went “No? Sorry, fair enough.”).
The second time I saw the show Adam Bayjou was Valjean and his Bring Him Home was one of the best I’ve ever heard (effortless high notes).
Also, Charlotte Kennedy was Cosette that time (she’s principal Cosette now) and her performance was so incredibly sweet! (She also brought some brunette power into the sea of blond that were Marius and Éponine.)
And Jordan Lee Davies was Bamatabois both times and he was great!
Oh, and my Christine from Phantom was the wonderful Lisa-Anne Wood.
21. Best Disney musical:
Mary Poppins - My first ever musical, fond memories, I still wear the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious shirt my dad bought me (11 years ago... didn’t fit then, fits now).
22. Which Disney movie should be made into a musical?
Uh, I don’t know. Tangled’s funny...
23. Which musical fandom has the funniest memes?
Hamilton and Les Mis. I mean, the Les Mis/Mean Girls crossovers alone...
24. Name a character from a musical you would sort into your Hogwarts house.
Well, the test sorted me into Hufflepuff (great house), but I know that I am a Ravenclaw (and, as we know, the hat listens to you). Okay, Ravenclaw... maybe Melchior from Spring Awakening?
25. Name a Broadway star you would sort into your Hogwarts house.
Ugh, that’s even harder! Sorry, no clue.
26. Best on stage chemistry?
Hmm from what I’ve seen live, Rob Houchen and Carrie Hope Fletcher were pretty darn amazing together.
From what I haven’t seen live, Jennifer Damiano and Adam Chanler-Berat, and Justin Johnston and Michael McElroy seemed fantastic.
27. A Broadway duo you love.
I’m gonna say Jonathan Groff and Lin-Manuel Miranda, but I’m not sure I understand the question...
28. What book, tv show, movie, biography, video game, etc. should be turned into a musical?
Umm... I don’t know. Supernatural sort of is a musical... A Lord of the Rings musical in the style of A Very Potter Musical might be fun. The Fellowship of the Sing? I’ll show myself out.
29. If you could make a jukebox musical, what artist or genre would you pick?
I doubt many people know her but: Vienna Teng. For three reasons (aside from me liking her songs): 1. Her songs tell stories. 2. She often writes from the perspective of “characters.” 3. Her songs are actual poetry!
30. Favourite role played by _________________?
I don’t get it. What am I supposed to put here?
31. What musical has made you cry the most?
I don’t actually cry often at musicals (internally I do), but It’s Quiet Uptown from Hamilton got me bad the first time. And I once listened to Next to Normal when I was already feeling like shit - bad idea! (Don’t listen to There’s a World when you kind of want there to not be a world, kids...)
32. What musical has made you laugh the most?
Probably Avenue Q and Something Rotten
33. Current showtune stuck in you head:
Well, you just put Hard to Be the Bard in my head!
34. A musical that has left you thinking about life for a long time or deeply inspired you.
Les Misérables... I haven’t spent a single week without thinking about that show (or, indeed, the book) since early 2013.
Next to Normal also gave me a lot to think about.
I keep discovering new little bits of genius in Hamilton lyrics. Also, I’m writing a paper on the early US for the second time in under a year and characters from Hamilton (otherwise know as historical figures) keep popping up. Seriously, I’m writing about the Whiskey Rebellion and every time I read Hamilton’s name my brain goes PAY YOUR FUCKING TAXES!
I’ve also thought quite a bit about Heathers and The Last Five Years, because both of them have had productions where they genderbended (genderbent?) a main character, which made me think about how it changes the story and why.
35. If you could perform any ensemble number , which one would you pick?
“If you could...” Are you implying that I don’t?! Come on, any theatre geek who claims never to have done a solo rendition of One Day More is definitely lying! Oh, and I rapped myself all the way through One Shot the other day and made only one mistake - one that Lin’s made before, so I’m proud!
36. Name a musical you didn’t like at first but ended up loving.
I don’t think that’s really happened... There have been shows where I thought “What in the holy hell is this?!” and ended up loving it. I mean, what in the holy hell is Avenue Q?!
37. What are some costumes you’d love to try on?
Give me that red vest! Also, let me play Enjolras! Yes, I know I’m a woman and can only hit that low “foooorm” when I’ve got a really bad cold, but fuck all that!
I’d also really like to try on Elphaba’s Act II dress, because it’s epic!
38. Favourite dance break.
Hmmm... I don’t really have one? The one in Cool and the ballet in Somewhere where they sort of replay what’s happened are pretty amazing (both West Side Story).
39. Favourite Starkid musical:
A Very Potter Musical is the only one I know... Sorry...
40. What’s a musical more people should know about?
Well, where I live, most people have heard of Cats, Phantom, and Mamma Mia and that’s about it.
But in general, I’ve never met anyone who’s even heard of Assassins (although many people who have met me have now heard everything about Assassins - I’m that kind of person).
41. What are some lines from musicals you really like?
Okay, this is gonna take a while...
"Can you remind me of what it was like at the top of the world?” (In the Heights)
“Oh, my friends, my friends, don’t ask me what your sacrifice was for.” (Les Misérables - internal Niagara Falls!)
“Here, put some hail into the chief.” (Assassins)
“But the sky’s gonna hurt when it falls. So you’d better start building some walls.” (Heathers)
“I’m not mad that you got mad when I got mad when you said I should go drop dead!” (Tick, Tick... Boom!)
“My God, in God we trust, but we never really know what God discussed.” (Hamilton)
“What doesn’t kill me doesn’t kill me.” (Next to Normal)
And just for fun: “Honest living, honest living, honest living, honest living,...” (Rent)
42. Name a Tony performance you rewatch and rewatch.
In the Heights, Next to Normal, Hamilton, and Spring Awakening (both versions).

Question time :) 1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to? 18. what’s your patronus? 29. three songs that you connect with right now.
Okay so this is why I am the world’s worst “writer” - i get too caught up in minutiae of answering a question before actually managing to answer it. same reason it takes me a week to write an article when others do it in a day. for this i walked around my house taking notes about all the books/dvds etc that i own.
1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
I really struggled to narrow this down from just STUFF I LIKE to stuff that was formative or really representative of my personality, has characters that hit close to home, etc. READ: All of Tamora Pierce, anything by the music journalist Rob Sheffield, anything by Nick Hornby, Meg Cabot, Philip Pullman, Oscar Wilde, or James Herriot, 84 Charing Cross Rd by Helene Hanff, I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith, Cool for Cats by Jessica Adams, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell, the Harry Potter fanfiction “The Shoebox Project, the Star Wars fanfiction “To The Sky Without Wings,” the Raven Cycle, and the complete works of Neil Gaiman. WATCH: Velvet Goldmine, The History Boys, Almost Famous, Eurotrip, Notting Hill, The Last of the Blonde Bombshells, Les Miserables, Inception, Torchwood, Avatar: The Last Airbender, House, the Captain America trilogy, the final three seasons of Buffy, Glee, Smash, every Ben Wyatt scene from Parks and Recreation, Anastasia, the musicals of Team StarKid, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. LISTEN: Ben Folds, The Libertines, Motion City Soundtrack, Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is…, “Aim and Ignite” by Fun, “The Weight Is A Gift” by Nada Surf, Franz Ferdinand, The Used, David Bowie, The Kinks, Jack’s Mannequin, Robbie Williams, One Direction, The Dresden Dolls, “Weathervanes” by Freelance Whales, “Moon Safari” by Air, a best of Crowded House cd, Les Miserables (sensing a theme?) Wicked, Godspell, and various other Broadway shows that I can’t pinpoint right now.
18. what’s your patronus?
Darren Criss. (honestly it is probably a horse - though a horse is not my daemon, if we’re switching ‘verses here. My daemon, or I guess animagus in potterverse, would be a cat. patronus, for safety and protection etc, would, i believe, be a horse. i used to ride a LOT.)
29. three songs that you connect with right now.
“Changes” by David Bowie - I’ve seen a lot of Bowie tribute concerts since his death in an attempt to deal with my grief issues (if someone I love dies, even someone IRL, I tend to cope, or not cope, with eliminating them from ever existing, which means never re-visiting their work, or stories, etc. It’s not good, I know. ) This was never my fave of his songs, just a standard hit, but recently it’s been like hearing it for the first time. The man was a genius and we need him back.
and these children that you spit on as they try to change their worlds are immune to your consultations, they’re quite aware of what they’re going through
“When I Say Fuck, You Say That” by Amanda Palmer - this is a new song she wrote for the Women’s March and it really stuck with me.
i used to think that progress was a single forward line, it’s 2017, god, what the fuck is going on?
“You Are In Love” by Taylor Swift - you know perfectly well why.
he says look up, and your shoulders brush - no proof, one touch, you felt enough
