I rewatched the second season of South Park and took so many notes that I had to split them into two parts. Like seriously, I took so. many. notes. And pictures this time. I started rewatching just in case I’d find some cool little facts to sprinkle into my fanfic but I went way too far and now there’s a million facts under this cut (including gay stan, a domestic violence psa, and craig fucking dying)
Stan doesn’t like hospitals, he finds them gross and he gets sick 🤮. Also the hospital in South Park is called Hell’s Pass hospital. Early seasons have the name as Hells Pass but it gets fixed later
Cartman has to sing all of Come Sailing Away by Styx if he hears a part of it. After he says this, Kyle sings the first part and Cartman has to sing the rest. Kyle does it again later, which is kinda mean
Cartman’s mom tries to abort Cartman, who is an eight-year-old child and thus cannot be legally aborted. Later, after she slept with Bill Clinton to change the law and make 40th trimester abortions legal, it turns out she meant adoption
Kenny sacrifices himself to turn on the generator to the hospital and save Dr. Mephesto’s life along with others. He says “I’ll fucking do it” then does it and dies, absolute legend
Cartman gets way too into his deputy role. He goes undercover, pretends to be a prostitute, says “Respect my authoritah!” a lot and beats people up with his police stick
Kenny’s brother first appears when Cartman responds to a call about a disturbance at Kenny’s house. Apparently there are like 10 adult family members in the house at that time. Kenny’s dad has a black eye because Kenny’s mom punched him. She says he can’t hold a job
Token sits in the classroom in season 2
Cartman starts hating hippies in this season, like a lot
Chef tells the boys that the right time to do drugs is in college
Ike’s name is Ike Moisha Broflovski and he was born in 1996, making him 2 years old in 1998 when this season aired
This is probably obvious but yeah Kyle and Ike are circumcised
Kyle says family isn’t just blood, it’s who you care about, and he says “That’s why you guys are more than just friends, you’re my family. Except for Cartman.”
Craig’s finally sitting in the classroom in S02E04
None of the boys like dodgeball
Clyde gets a dodgeball to the face and he cries :( and he’s the only one who cries by the way
Pip throws a dodgeball in Kyle’s face and breaks Kyle’s nose
When Kyle’s mom tells the boys about conjoined twin myslexia (which isn’t a real term) and says anyone might’ve absorbed their dead twin in the womb, Stan and Cartman run away screaming but Kenny and Kyle stay to listen. Kenny even leans in to look at the book “Freaks A-Z!” that Mrs. Broflovski is reading from, and when she leaves, Kyle grimaces and Kenny laughs
Stan’s mom (Sharon) calls Kyle’s mom (Sheila) when Stan is all freaked out and trying to put an icepick through his brain, and Sharon tells Sheila to get run over by a truck. Sharon is pretty mean in these early episodes
Mr. Broflovski doesn’t really listen to what Mrs. Broflovski is saying, bad husband >:(
South Park’s team is always called South Park Cows no matter the sport
The school nurse, Nurse Gollum, went to Colorado State University
I just realized Butters exists. I think he appeared before S02E05 but I didn’t notice but yeah he’s there with the dodgeball team, injured
Tumblr media
Here’s a picture to make up for my disgusting anti-Butters bias
Kenny’s dodgeball uniform number is 69 obviously. Kyle is 7, Stan is 4, Cartman is 325
Sheila smacks Gerald in the face so hard he falls off his chair, lots of violence perpetrated by women in this show. Remember, don’t do domestic violence no matter your gender, it’s not cool
I realized after this whole Butters thing that I should’ve made more notes about Pip, so I’ll make a note about his anger issues now. When people call him French, he gets angry and throws dodgeballs at them
The boys launch a jelly roll at Ms. Crabtree and make her crash the bus. They do it just for fun
The kids somehow go to China in the school bus
Cartman references Moby Dick, but he probably doesn’t know what he’s talking about
Kevin Stoley gets named in S02E05 and has his first speaking role when he says he has Chinese parents and after Cartman hears it he immediately says something racist. smh cartman, what a problematic fave
Cartman says “I love you guys 😊” but Stan and Kyle just stare at him and he goes 😐 “Eh, screw you guys 😠”
If Jimbo and Ned really fought in Vietnam, they youngest they could’ve been in 1998 is early forties, which means in the latest seasons they would be early sixties. Btw they met in Vietman
Jesus and Pals is a recurring TV show in seasons 1 and 2. Jesus just kind of lives in South Park
I just remembered that Terrance and Phillip are really old in canon, it’s so weird, like how can South Park canon still be changing, it’s been 20 years
Also the early seasons are casually racist who knew
Kenny flashes his ass on a tape the boys send to Jimbo and Ned’s TV show, which airs and at least 12 people see Kenny’s bare naked ass
Cartman really doesn’t like hippies in these early seasons. He throws a chair at Ned and yells, “Take that, hippie!” (Ned is in a catatonic state and did nothing to provoke this)
Jimbo and Ned live together I guess. Jimbo’s gonna take Ned home and show him some hardcore porn to snap him out of his catatonic state, good husband unlike Gerald Broflovski
Saddam Hussein is in hell and has a Canadian accent and is Satan’s lover in S02E06, I guess he died in Canada in the first episode this season but I wasn’t paying much attention since that’s the Terrance and Phillip episode that pissed a bunch of people off in 1998 because the audience wanted to know who Cartman’s dad is instead. It was kind of a boring episode so I understand why everyone was pissed, but it is funny that Matt and Trey did that so I’m not mad about it
Tumblr media
Aww look at them!!! We’ve got background Style, the vaguest inkling of Crenny, and Cartman/Cake
I’d take more screenshots but it’s a pain since I’m watching legally and stupid legal websites block screenshots so I have to find youtube videos instead ughhhh piracy is the answer kids
Apparently there’s a huge waterfall and canyon somewhere close to South Park, maybe? At least in Stan’s dream
Mary Kay Bergman was an incredible voice actor. How the hell did she voice all the moms, Wendy, Shelly, principle Victoria, the mayor, Nurse Gollum, and fucking Ms. Crabtree??? Holy shit what a queen
Kenny has some feelings about death. He reimagines the episode where death boops him to death and in his version, he beats death the fuck up, then has ice cream and is happy 😊 But again, this is in Stan’s dream
S02E07 kind of establishes that nobody remembers Kenny dying because when Cartman tells a story where Kenny dies, Kyle questions how Kenny could’ve died then when he also died just a few hours ago when a giant monster took him
Tumblr media
rip craig, he falls out the bus and into a canyon
But it’s okay because it was all Stan’s dream so everything in the episode is questionable. Everything after this is no longer a dream
Pip’s parents are dead and he has to go to summer school while everyone else is having a nice summer break
Officer Barbrady and the mayor are having sexual relations, I’m sure this is the most interesting note I’ve made so far. Idk I’m just writing everything down, this is how I enjoy things, I have no off switch
Tumblr media
Ew summer bus stop, cursed
Kyle casually sings little tunes every once in a while, how cute
This is pretty obvious but Kenny likes dirty jokes, he laughs when Cartman innocently says he loves Chef’s salty chocolate balls (which are chocolate candy). Nobody else laughs
Cartman says “Screw you guys, I’m going home” or variations of it a lot in this season
So Stan throws up when he likes someone, right? Well, he’s watching an indie movie about two gay cowboys who start making out and he throws up, which is either a terrible homophobic joke or confirmation that Stan’s a little gay. I know which one I prefer
Kyle says Mr. Hankey is his best friend after Stan. Like I know it’s definitely canon that Stan and Kyle are best friends but it’s still nice to see confirmation, it’s very precious. Also Kyle is best friends with literal shit, so cute 😊
Kenny deaths:
S02E02 Kenny sacrifices himself by connecting a generator wire, which electrocutes him but brings power back to a hospital
S02E03 A tree falls on Kenny and crushes him
S02E04 Kenny falls in a grave and the gravestone falls on him
S02E05 The Chinese dodgeball team throws a ball at Kenny and he gets splattered against a wall
S02E06 Two guys pull on Kenny and tear him in half, as in one has the head and one has the legs
S02E07 A big scary monster plucks Kenny out of the school bus and carries him away. Also in Cartman’s fake memory of Fonzi jumping over cars, the motorcycle hits Kenny and crushes him against a brick wall. Kenny gets smashed against walls a lot, doesn’t he?
S02E08 Flashback: Baby Kenny has a firecracker and it explodes, sprinkling little baby Kenny parts everywhere. Later in the episode, current day Kenny dies when a giant firework snake bumps him off a stage and under a fence, which then crushes him.
S02E09 Kenny is playing with a yoyo outside a movie theatre when a bunch of people come outside and trample him to death. They say “Oh my God, I found a penny!” and “You bastard!”
I’ll post part 2 of season 2 in a couple days. I’m having way more fun writing these stupid notes than I thought I would (also gnomes is coming up soon and i am fucking ready for tweek)

Would you ever get a tattoo? I would love to get one, and plans are definitely set for that. It’s just a matter of knowing when I’m finally finally FINALLY ready to have something permanent placed on my skin.
Can you live without your phone? Technically yes, but I would have a very hard time since I use it for a lot of things, if not all the things I do on a daily basis; and I imagine I’d grow cranky very fast.
What animal do you resemble? I’m not so sure about resemble...I can tell you my personality matches best with dogs, though. I always have a great time with them.
What is your best friend’s name? I have two of them, Angela and Andi.
What is/was your favorite subject in school? History, followed by honestly any social sciences course out there...geography, anthropology, political science, etc. I definitely hogged those classes in college as much as my curriculum allowed me to.

Do you like chocolate? Chocolate-flavored sweets, yes. Actual chocolate or chocolate bars, not so much.
What is your favorite word? Poignant always seems to hit me straight in the feels.
Have you ever done something really stupid? Erm, of course? I do it at least once a day.
What was the worst mistake you ever made? Y’all have heard it a million times by now, but it’s tolerating shit I knew I didn’t deserve. Also, touching a plugged clothes iron when I was 7.

How high can you count? Any number as long as money is involved, hahaha.

Do you like seafood? Looooooove seafood. I literally have 24 pieces of sushi right next to me right now; just a lil Friday treat for myself heehee.
What is your least favorite name? That seems a bit harsh. I don’t think I hate any name that much so as to call it my least favorite.
What do you want to name your child? Olivia or Mia is still on the table for me.
Do you like the color green? Just the olive shade. Otherwise it’s my least favorite color.
Do you have lots of friends? I would say I have enough to be happy. I don’t know what exactly ‘many’ means.
Are you listening to anything right now? Yeah, my friend group put up a Discord server just tonight and Jo proceeded to start a BTS playlist earlier. Everyone’s since hopped out for the night, but the playlist is still on so I’ll be staying around for the meantime and vibe. :) Just me, BTS, and my sushi haha.
What time is it? 10:04 PM.
Are you hungry? No, I’m taking bites every once in a while as I take this survey.

What part of your body do you wash first? Hair.
Do you have an innie or an outie? Innie.

What was the last thing you got grounded for? Low grades, which was really the only reason why I ever got grounded.
Did you go to a water park last summer? No, and I doubt anyone else did either...
What shoe do you put on first? Usually the right.
Finish the sentence: Girls... Are powerful.
Have you ever had a song or poem written about you? Poem, yeah. I don’t think I would particularly appreciate an entire song being written about me though, I think that would just make me cringe lol.

Favorite website? Twitter, probably. Or YouTube.
Worst thing that has ever happened to you? Losing two relatives I was close to in the span of four days to Covid. I am so fucking glad we made the decision to celebrate Christmas with extended family last year, no matter how ignorant it was. It absolutely sucks that I will never see them again.

The ability of fans to shape and change the art they enjoy is nothing new. In 1893, the reaction to Arthur Conan Doyle killing off Sherlock Holmes was so intense that he eventually resurrected him ten years later. Historian Greg Jenner, the author of the forthcoming book Dead Famous (a study of the history of fame), has even tracked the characteristics of modern fandom back to the 1700s when rival supporters of English theatre actresses would compete for dominance like Team Aniston or Team Jolie.
And to the 1920s, where fan groups would write thousands of letters to movie studios demanding their favorite actor be given better roles. “It was the same thing,” he says, “as Sonic the Hedgehog having weird teeth and people going, ‘No, that’s not the game I played as a kid, you need to fix it or I am not giving you any money.’”
The last decade or so has witnessed huge changes in the awareness, perception, and tools of fandom. In terms of television and film, the enormous successes of Game of Thrones and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have introduced geek culture – and its brand of participatory fandom – to the mainstream. At the same time, the internet – and more specifically social media – has amplified fans’ voices, while also breaking down the boundaries between them and the artists they love/hate.
Yet the extent to which the internet has changed the very nature of fandom is debatable. According to leading media scholar Henry Jenkins, whose 1992 book Textual Poachers is considered the founding text of fan studies, it has merely “increased the scope and scale of the fan community, allowed for ongoing interactions amongst fans, and made the entertainment industry more aware of the kind of fan responses which have been occurring all along”.
Case in point: in 1968, Star Trek fans – a group who essentially invented the framework of modern fandom – orchestrated a huge and successful letter-writing campaign to save the show from cancellation. Then, in subsequent years, they also popularised fan fiction as we now know it, publishing stories for each other in zines, and pioneering the homoerotic literary sub-genre of slash fiction (the term ‘slash’ literally derives from the punctuation between Kirk / Spock).
Now fans weaponize hashtags and online petitions to revive shows like The Expanse and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, or to take showrunners to task with criticisms of their blind spots and choices. One notable example is the teen show The 100, which sparked ire in 2016 after killing off one of the show’s prominent gay characters; an act that was seen by many to perpetuate the ‘bury your gays’ trope that has been prevalent in TV and film. And as for fan fiction? There is, most famously, E L James’ Fifty Shades of Grey series, which was inspired by Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight and originally posted on a fan website. But, beyond that, there is also the platform Archive of Our Own, which in 2019 won a Hugo award for its archive of more than 4.7 million fan-written stories.
“Fans engaging actively with the materials of their culture has improved our world in countless ways,” says Jenkins. “Television, as it exists today, is largely a response to modes of engagement that fans have modeled over the past several decades – [a form] where more attention is paid to backstories and secondary characters, where there is a greater degree of serialization and the core mythology is sustained across multiple media platforms, and which builds in space for exploration and speculation. And now, which seeks to be more diverse and inclusive in whose stories get told… Many of today’s critical darlings are following practices that were modeled first in fan fiction.”
Perhaps one of the most profound changes of the last 10 years is the extent to which the entertainment industry has begun to exploit the passion of fanbases for their own commercial ends. “The industry needs fans more than ever before,” explains academic Suzanne Scott, author of Fake Geek Girls, a study of the gender politics of fandom. “They need fans to ensure big opening weekends at the box office, they need them as promotional labor to create more ‘authentic’ excitement around a media object, or to distinguish one text from the glut of content that we are constantly choosing between as consumers.” Just take the techniques employed by Netflix, who have become masters of facilitating ‘organic’ conversation around their output.
On the more extreme end of the spectrum, they even rely on them as investors. A famous example being the 2014 big-screen revival of cult TV detective drama Veronica Mars, a sequel made possible only by the crowdfunding efforts of fans, and which subsequently led to a 2019 TV return on streaming service Hulu.
With the latter series, this equal partnership dynamic started to become complicated, however, with fans recoiling in horror when creator Rob Thomas killed off love interest Logan.
To quote journalist Constance Grady, writing for Vox: “Thomas, they said, had taken advantage of their desire to see Veronica and Logan together, using their investment as shippers to leverage not just their time and attention, but the literal dollars out of their pockets. In that case, didn’t he owe them something?”
Jenkins thinks it’s a fair question. “The sense of ownership reflects the way humans have always engaged with stories,” he says. “We use stories to make sense of who we are. We use stories to debate our values, fears, and aspirations. We display our attachment to stories in various ways and we define ourselves through which stories mean the most to us. There’s nothing odd about this. What is odd is the idea that corporations want to claim a monopoly over the storytelling process, resist input from their audience, and lockdown stories from further circulation and elaboration.”

Gambit Games chapter 1
(Hey guys, new project, its mostly smut and violence, you’ve been warned. this first chapter is just a bit of set up)
“It was a dark and stormy night,” Marlow spoke, his voice low trying to emulate a creepy voice. The flashlight pointed up at his face illuminating the old Elton john poster behind him. Yvette and Annie giggle at the cliché opening line and Smith gives a big huff.
Marlow grabs a pillow from my twin bed beside him and throws it at him. “Shut it, downer, I’m trying to set the mood.”
“Last time you did that it took you two hours just to tell us an “original story” that turned out just to be an alternative version of Animal Farm.” Smith catches the pillow and swiftly throws it back hitting the shorter boy right it the throat.
“Alright, fuck you!” Marlow chuckles playfully and tosses the red pillow at me.
I catch it easily, Marlow’s never been a good shot, it’s a surprise it even made it into my hands.
“Come on guys I kind of want to hear Mar’s little story.” Annie said between soft chuckles.
“Little?!” Marlow fakes a loud gasp, “I’ll have you know I’m this generation’s next great author!”
Smith moves to sit on the bed and throws my second pillow at him, “Sure, when whatever perv website you use to post your one-direction fanfiction I’ll believe you.”
Marlow shifts back, a blush coming across his face. I lean over him from my spot on Claude’s bed to ruffle his wavy hair. We haven’t stop teasing him about his written erotica since Smith saw his latest creation when he left his laptop open. We’ve known since day one that he was gay, it wasn’t really a problem for anyone but his ex-roommate Oliver, but Smith was a good man and traded rooms with him, the AC works better in his old room and anyone would want it over the other stuffy ass rooms on this floor.
“Aw leave him alone” Annie takes my third and finale pillow off my bed to support her back.
“No, keep it going, hearing about Marlow’s sexual fantasies is far more interesting than any of his books or plays that we’ve yet to read.” Yvette points out.
Giggles and laughter erupt from the group as Marlow shrivels up in his button up shirt. My freshmen year of college has gone much better than I thought it would. Its only September but I find myself in good company. In high school I’m not quite sure what I did wrong, I’m not mean to people, I’m rather smart and as far as I’m told I’m very attractive. But back in my hometown I never really had any friends. Classmates sure but outside of them asking to barrow my notes I didn’t really conversate. I spent most of my free time writing, I guess it paid off too because now I’ve got a free ride through the country’s best playwriting program.
The top four floors of the oldest building on campus is reserved for the theatre program students and the top floor is for the scholarship kids, which is us, and the other three floors hate us, which I love. I love the superiority of it all, I love being hated by the lesser it further proves my place above it all. Yvette flips her black hair over her shoulder, as she does this action, I realize what she’s wearing tonight, or lack of. Yvette has always dressed a certain way but her current assemble seemed to top a mental list I didn’t even know I was making. She’s wearing a tight-fitting black tank top that clearly is far too small and sweats that seem to hug curves I didn’t know she had. Huh.
“Psst.” Smith calls over the group to me as Marlow struggles to change the subject. He mouths something to me that I can’t really tell, the room is very dark. Then me nods to Yvette. ‘stop staring’ that was it, see, I’m smart.
As I start to tune in to whatever the new topic is my focus is ripped away by the door of my dorm slamming open and the lights flipping on.
“Why are you all sitting in the dark? Please tell me no one’s having sex on my bed.”
Claude stands at the doorway, his copper hair showing off its red shine telling me he hasn’t washed his hair in a good while. He’s tall, taller than me but not as tall as smith, but even then, Smith’s only six two. We’re not the most height-friendly bunch with most of us being below five ten.
“You wish I was.” Yvette follows her comment up with a fake moan.
Claude sighs and drops his bag by the foot of his bed and looks dead into my eyes; “What are they all doing here?”
Before I can answer Smith stands up from my bed and rolls his shoulders back, “Its scary story night, sweetheart, come on join us.”
The shorter boy puffs his chest out a bit and puts his hands in his jean pockets, jeans I now realize they are covered with an un-godly amount of dirt.
“No thanks, I’ll pass. But y’all need to relocate I’ve got a killer head ache and I’d rather be asleep right now.”
Smith looks him up and down, makes a show of rolling his shoulders back again. They’re squaring off at each other, they do it quite a lot, I don’t know if its because they’re the two alpha males of our group or what. Though, I wouldn’t say Claude is part the group, he mostly gets stuck with one of us for projects because he’s also a scholarship kid meaning the rest of the department hates his guts. At first I thought they did it because they wanted to fuck but neither of them wanted to admit to being a bottom, but now I know they’re both straight. Very much so in Claude’s case; he’s never even kissed a boy. Smith however tends to be a bit more fluid, at least from what I can tell.
Smith forfeits their fake fight first; “Tsk, fine. We can go to me and Marlow’s room.”
“Marlow and I.” the wavy-haired brunette corrects him as everyone starts to get unsettled from their spots.
Annie yawns as she gets to the door first, “actually guys I’m pretty tired, I’m going back to my room.
“Me too.” I chime in, “Y’all go on without us.”
Yvette scoffs at us, “Fine, more fun for Smith and Marlow.” She winks at me before stepping out of my dorm and down the hall.
Marlow flashes a confused face at Smith before the two of them leave. Annie picks up her phone from my bed’s edge and hugs me goodnight, she closes the door behind her and as soon as it clicks shut Claude starts stripping his clothes off.
“Why the rush?” I ask sinking back onto his bed.
“I haven’t showered in like two days and I’m covered in shit.” He says as he lifts his shirt over his head.
“Three.” I correct him. It his job that keeps him away at every free moment of the day. If he’s not in class or sleeping he’s at his mystery job that he refuses to talk about. I think he’s a janitor or something along those lines but that wouldn’t explain the weird hours or the dust and dirt, its not like bathroom grime its real under-the-grass dirt. Mud stains if it was raining that day.
As he slips off his jeans that are defiantly a size or two too big I ask him, “What’s with all the dirt?”
He grunts, “Work.”
“Very specific.”
He rolls his eyes and opens the door to our shared restroom and turns the shower on.
“I would like more details, please.”
“It was a long weekend, just worked more then usual, no laundry machines there so it’s not like I could wash my pants before you saw them.” He snaps.
“Just asking, calm down.” I decide not to push it, Claude is already a touchy person already, but I’m guessing he hasn’t slept much at all lately.
I change into a tank top and old shorts while he’s in the shower, waiting till he’s dresses and clothed till I go in there to take care of myself for the night.
“What time is your first class tomorrow?” He asks me.
“Ten.” I say through the tooth brush in my mouth, “That stupid English class they’re making us playwrights take. It’s the absolute worst thing.”
“So I’ve heard. That real flamboyant guy, William, he won’t shut up about it.”
I raise an eyebrow at him, “Non-scholarship kid? They talk to you?”
“No, but he’s loud enough during my dramaturgy class its hard to not to hear when he complains about everything.” He looks at me a moment while I spit into he sink. “Is he any good? At the writing stuff? He talks all this smack whenever Marlow or Oliver even walk by his vicinity. I just gotta know.”
“Ha, absolutely not, he thinks just because he was named after Shakespeare he’s god’s gift, but his shit is so “inspectorial” and “meta” I couldn’t tell you what a damn one was about.”
Claude nods, “A’ight, I’ll bring that up next time he calls Marlow’s play’s basic.”
“I’m surprised Mar’s doesn’t stand up for himself.”
“He’s taken after you,” He says walks to his bed, “just starting ignoring everyone that doesn’t matter. Which I suppose at this point is anyone who doesn’t live on this floor or teach one of his classes.”
“Smart kid.” I say turning off the light to the bathroom.
“Night Butch.” He says quietly.
“G’night Claude.” I respond turning off the dorm room light. As I slip into bed, I think about nothing, nothing at all.

okay but I'm still mad about love, simon not being shown in russia. I mean I got to watch moonlight in theatre last year. they even ran carol, although it was months after the worldwide release. but love, simon doesn’t even have a voiced-over trailer. it’s just the subtitled version on youtube some fans made. and it makes me so mad and it makes me so mad and it makes me so so mad.
there’s this law in russia. it’s called the gay propaganda law and it states that exposure to any kind of gay things will make children gay, and the law is there to protect the children. always protect the children. right.
gay propaganda means books and movies and news websites. information. resources that are quite often crucial for gay kids to survive. support groups. help lines. group chats. anything and everything where at least one adult shares the information and resources they have with lgbtqia youths will get that adult prosecuted. should I even mention gay prides. but yeah. gay prides.
people will tell me to calm down and not get so worked up over one small thing. it’s just one movie. right. it’s just one movie and it’s just queer activists being sued and fined and stalked and threatened and eventually get injured or killed or forced to leave the country. just one activist at a time, no biggie, right?
me? no, I’m not an activist. I got nothing to be worried about. nothing to be afraid of. right. I live on the tenth floor but I’ll give you one guess as to what will happen if I hang the rainbow flag off my balcony. come on. I’m sure you won’t be able to guess wrong. protect the children, remember?
thing is, I’m not an activist because I’m scared. and I’m ashamed to be scared of my identity, ashamed to be so scared that I won’t even reach out and look for an offline queer community. there’s this one I know is legit, but it’s in another city. so what do I do. stay at home and write angry poetry. make rainbow art and pretend it’s just rainbow, and hope for someone to notice. someone like me.
but everyone is scared. it could be a long wait, really.
I mean. what was I thinking. nobody would show a gay movie in theatres during the same month the entire country is supposed to go vote for the dictator people still call president. which has of course already happened. anyone surprised by that.

Chapter 4 of my gift fic for @blackwolfchimera. Honestly this might be my favorite chapter so far, I had fun referencing audition songs... Also think it might be the longest one...
Chapter 1 (plus explanation) | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3
The next few days were spent in a haze of bland routine. Go to class, be bored, rinse and repeat until he went home. The one thing that stood out was walking by that sign up sheet several times a day. He kept eyeing it, debating if he should write down his name. It wasn’t like he was that into theatre, but it’d please Winry if he at least tried. Get her off his back about it...
Yeah, that’s why he was interested in trying. It had nothing to do with vague hopes Roy was interested in doing it too. Or not much, anyway.
At lunchtime the day the auditions would be held, he was standing in front of the sheet of paper with a pencil in his hand, willing himself to actually write his name down.
“Ed? Why are you standing in the middle of the hall?”
Ed jumped about a foot in the air, dropping his pencil in the process and then, somehow, managing to put his foot in exactly the wrong position to have the pencil roll underneath it and make his foot fly out from underneath him, crashing to the floor.
“Fuck! Ow!” He exclaimed with a grimace, pushing himself up, “I’m not doing anything. Why do you have to be such a... Sneaky bastard?”
Roy laughed and reached down to help him up with a shake of his head, “Not my fault you’re a klutz.”
“I’m not a klutz, you’re an asshole! A... Too quiet asshole!”
Roy just laughed again at that. “So, going to tell me what you were doing? Or are you gonna lie to me again?”
“Well… I was… I’m gonna give auditioning a shot,” he admitted, his cheeks coloring pink as he tried to shrug it off and act like it wasn’t a big deal, “I thought it could be fun. At least it’d get Winry off my back about it.”
“Mm, not a bad reason, I guess...” Roy hummed, glancing at the sheet himself. His face was oddly unreadable again, but Ed thought he could see wheels turning. Maybe... Considering?
“Were you gonna do it?” he asked slowly, trying not to get his hopes up. It was hard not to, though, when it was starting to look more and more like Roy wanted to do it, too. Between the way he sounded talking about karaoke, and that look on his face...
Roy shook himself out of his thoughts and glanced over at Ed, opening his mouth to speak just as the warning bell rang.
“Shit, gotta go! See you later!” Ed called quickly as he took off down the hallway, a hopeful flutter starting in his stomach as he imagined himself at the auditions with Roy.
Later that day, after school was over, he walked slowly into the theatre and was a little surprised to hear Winry calling his name from where she’d crouched down in one of the aisles.
“Oh, hey,” he said, wandering over and blinking at her, “Why are you on the floor?”
“Oh, well, we’re not allowed to be working on stage during auditions,” she answered, gesturing to the piece of plywood she’s painting, which he guessed was part of the set, “But the sets are a lot more complicated than usual for this show, so we can’t just take the day off...”
“So you’re Ed,” the girl next to her said, smiling at him, “Winry told me about you, I didn’t think you’d show...”
“Wasn’t sure I was going to, but might as well audition...” he said, voice trailing off as the door opening again caught his attention, unable to help smiling as he saw Roy striding in, “Hey! Roy! Didn’t think you’d make it!”
“I got lucky, practice got canceled...” Roy said, coming over with a laugh, blinking in confusion when he came around and spotted the girls in the aisle, “What-”
“Working on something for the sets,” Winry answered quickly, “I’m Winry. Ed’s friend.”
“Oh! Right, he’s mentioned you...” Roy said, giving her a charming smile before turning to the other girl, “Are you a friend of Ed’s too?”
“Nah, we only just met...” she said, grinning at Roy in a way Ed really didn’t understand. It looked... Knowing.
“Oh, right, I forgot to introduce you!” Winry said quickly, “Ed, this is my friend Paninya, she’s in the same tech class as me...”
“Nice to meet you,” she said cheerfully, “Seriously... I hope you two are good, because we could really use some new talent around here. Maybe we can finally do our sets justice!”
“It can’t be that bad, can it?” Roy asked, frowning at them, “I thought the theatre department was good...”
“The tech department is. The actors... Not so much,” Winry explained, frowning back at him, “How do you not know that? Haven’t you been going here the whole time?”
“Well, yeah, but I... Never managed to make it to one of the shows...”
“People talk about it. All the time,” she said, giving him a skeptical look.
“I... Haven’t paid much attention to anything but basketball and class,” he admitted sheepishly after a long moment, mumbling as if he hoped they wouldn’t actually be able to hear him.
Both of the girls stared at him for a long moment before Paninya burst out laughing and Winry just turned to give Ed an incredulous look.
“Really Ed? This is what you’ve been flirting with?”
Ed immediately sputtered, turning red. “I haven’t been flirting with him!”
“Alright, everyone!” the teacher called out, cutting off their conversation before it could go any further, “We’d better get started... I hope you all put your name on the sign up form? I’ll be using that to keep track of your names...”
“Uh, excuse me?” Roy called out, “I didn’t put my name on... I wasn’t sure I’d be able to come...”
Mr. Garfiel gave him a displeased look that made Ed wince in sympathy. He was pretty sure the only reason Roy was spared any further wrath was the handful of other students making noises of agreement across the theatre.
“You’re all lucky I printed extras of everything,” he sighed, waving a hand toward the table set up at the front, “I put the sheet down there, hurry and add your names before we get started...”
Roy grimaced as he headed to the front with the handful of other students, and the teacher continued as if he hadn’t been interrupted.
“Now, the show we’re putting on this time is very special,” he said, beaming, “I’ve been trying to put on something like this for years...”
“Wait, why would he have to wait to put on a certain show?” Ed asked with a confused scowl, “Isn’t he in charge?”
“Ed, keep your voice down,” Winry shot back, keeping her voice low, “He is, but the administration still has to approve his choices. I don’t know if it was because he wanted to do a gay show or an original one, but they wouldn’t let him. Not until now, anyway...”
“He was gushing about it in class for a month before break,” Paninya commented, “Pretty much from the second he got approval...”
“Sounds kind of annoying...”
“Yeah, a bit. But mostly because we were supposed to be working...”
“Did I miss something?” Roy asked as he drifted back over to them.
“Just explaining something to Ed, don’t worry about it,” Winry said, waving a hand at him dismissively. He shrugged it off after a moment, leaning on the wall very close to Ed, who suddenly found it a bit hard to focus on what the teacher was saying. Not that he’d been paying much attention in the first place...
“I’d like to introduce our writer for this show, Mei Chang...” he said, gesturing to a girl who was absolutely tiny in every sense of the world and was glaring daggers at a boy in the front row, “She’s done an excellent job...”
“Yeah, if you don’t mind it sounding like a cheesy romance novel,” Winry snorted, not looking away from her work.
“I say fan fiction, personally,” Paninya commented mildly, poking up to look toward the stage, “And it’s not that bad, if it’s played right... Oh, the drama’s started up already. Great...”
“So that’s her cousin? Or whatever?” Ed asked, eyeing the boy she’d been glaring at.
“Yeah, that’s Ling,” Paninya hummed with a nod, “I really hope he doesn’t get the lead this time, for once. Sometimes I think it’s gone to his head a bit...”
“Wait, you two have already read the script?” Roy asked, leaning over to look past Ed at the girls.
Winry looked up with a frown. “Well yeah, it’s on the school website... Didn’t you? To prep for the audition?”
“We’re supposed to prepare?”
“Now if you could all take one of the forms on the table and fill it out,” Mr. Garfiel call out before anyone answered him, “It’s to provide more in depth information to help with my casting choices later. Previous experience, scheduling conflicts, that sort of thing...”
“Go on,” Winry said, giving them a sympathetic smile (which just left Ed dreading whatever it was she was doing that over), “Mr. Garfiel’s going to like you even less if you dawdle...”
“Right...” Ed sighed, following Roy over to the table, grumbling in frustration as people cut him off when he tried to grab a form.
“Hey Ed,” Roy called over from where he was standing, over to the side using the stage as a table to write on, “Over here, I grabbed a second one for you...”
“Oh. Thanks...” he said, wandering over and standing beside him, “You got a pen?”
“Yeah, just a second,” he said, frowning at the sheet in front of him, “You think I should put basketball practice on here? I mean, it’ll only be a problem until the game, then I’m free...”
“Uh... Yeah, just put it down to be safe,” Ed replied after a moment, glancing at the teacher, “I get the feeling we’re not going to be well liked around here, not for awhile... Better to not make it any worse, right?”
“Right,” Roy said with a sigh, scribbling it down before handing over the pen, “I think we’re getting in over our heads with this. Did you know we were supposed to prepare at all?”
“Not a clue,” Ed answered, shaking his head a bit and frowning down at his own page, “What do I even put if I have... Nothing?”
“No what?”
“No... Anything,” Ed said, gesturing vaguely at the page, “No experience, no conflicts...”
“I don’t know... That n-slash-a thing?”
“Yeah, I guess,” he sighed back, scribbling it down quickly and giving Roy back his pen, frowning at the almost blank paper in his hands, “This looks like shit.”
“No kidding,” Roy said, holding up his own sheet, which wasn’t much better, “At least you don’t have scheduling conflicts... So what now?”
“When you’re done, just put it in a stack on that table for me...” Mr. Garfiel called out a moment later, “Then take a seat somewhere near the stage, so you’re ready when I call on you...”
“Well, guess that answers that,” Ed said with a bit of a laugh, going over and starting the stack, Roy and a couple others following a moment later.
The pair of them managed to find seats at the front, falling silent as they waited. Not that it took long... It seemed like just about everyone was either heading up or heading back to their seats by the time they sat down. Apparently no one was taking that long with the form... Even Ling, who was the last one finished, was only a moment behind everyone else.
“Well, now that everyone is done with that,” Mr. Garfiel called out from his own seat, now holding the sign up sheet, “We’ll be starting with your audition songs. I’ll be calling on you in the order you signed up, please have sheet music ready if you want accompaniment...”
The teacher gestured to the piano on stage, and Ed looked over, feeling dread drop into his stomach. He hadn’t realized they’d want them to bring their own songs to sing. What the hell was he supposed to do?
“We’re supposed to bring music?” Roy said softly, echoing his thoughts and looking even more panicked than Ed felt, as they watched Ling go up and sing a song Ed didn’t recognize, “I had no idea we were supposed to bring music...”
“Me neither. Shit, what the fuck are we supposed to do?”
“I have no idea,” Roy replied as Ling was cut off by praise from Mr. Garfiel, and the next girl was called up, “At least it looks like we only have to sing a little bit of it...”
“Yeah, I guess that’s good...” Ed said slowly, making a face as the new girl started to sing, “Is she seriously doing that song from Frozen?”
“I guess...” Roy said, snorting as he glanced over at Mr. Garfiel’s much less pleased expression, “It looks like he’s not that happy with her choice...”
“Yeah. Probably heard it one too many times...” Ed said with a bit of a laugh, then shook his head, “Fuck, what are we supposed to pick that he will like?”
“I... Have no idea,” Roy replied slowly, watching the teacher sigh in exasperation as another girl came up and started singing that one song from Les Miserables everyone knew, “Guess not anything too popular...”
“The only theatre shit I know is the popular stuff!” Ed protested.
“I know...” Roy sighed, “I guess... Just try to sound good? He can’t hate it just on song choice, right?”
“Yeah, guess not...” Ed agreed slowly, “I mean... Everybody so far has kinda been only OK...”
“Right,” Roy said with a nod, “So try to sound good, and try to make a better impression with the rest of the audition.”
“Yeah... There’s got to be more than just this part, right?”
“Well, he did say we were starting with this...”
“Right,” Ed said, groaning a bit, “I still have no idea what I’m going to sing, though.”
“Neither do I...” Roy sighed, falling silent as they watched the other auditions, and the teacher’s reaction to them. There was one boy, a couple people after that, that seemed to be doing another of those stereotypical songs, but Mr. Garfiel’s face relaxed after his initial cringe, looking... Not really pleased, but at least satisfied. Ed immediately relaxed.
“I’m just going to sing whatever the person before me sang,” Ed said after a moment.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Roy asked, turning to frown at him.
Ed shrugged. “What else am I supposed to do? I don’t have sheet music on me. And everybody’s had the piano so far...”
“Good point. Probably look even more unprepared without it...” Roy sighed, “Still. What if it’s a girl? I mean, the song would be too high for us then, wouldn’t it?”
“Well... Just have to deal, I guess.”
Ed was called up a moment later.
“Well, guess it’s your lucky day,” Roy hummed after a moment, “Guess you’ll be singing Stars...”
“Right. Fuck...” he sighed, but stood anyway, giving him a halfhearted smile that verged on a cringe, “Wish me luck...”
He quickly headed up onto the stage, waving at the piano player, “Can you play that last one again?”
The girl blinked at him, surprised, but shrugged it off and kept playing.
Ed managed to make it through about as much of the song as the last guy had before the teacher cut him off, immediately wincing at his... Less than pleased tone. He hadn’t thought he’d sounded that bad, though admittedly he’d been more focused on trying to remember the words.
“What, was I awful?” he said as he sat back down beside Roy.
“I didn’t think so,” Roy shrugged, “I thought you sounded good. You were making a weird face though...”
“Was trying to remember the damn words...” he muttered, sinking down in his seat as he watched another girl, one of those that had added their names last minute, did a pretty damn good version of Part of Your World without accompaniment.
And when he glanced over, the teacher looked pleased.
“Well, I guess accompaniment isn’t as big a deal as we thought...” Roy said slowly as he watched the teacher’s reaction.
“Yeah. Damn it...” Ed muttered, looking irritated, “Guess at least you know that now...”
“Yeah...” Roy said, wincing as he was called up, “Guess I’m just going to have to do the first thing that comes to mind...”
“Good luck,” Ed replied, giving him a half smile as he walked up to the stage.
When Roy got up there, he just stood there for a long moment, looking almost panicked. Ed cringed in sympathy... Clearly he was having a hard time coming up with something to sing.
“Any time now,” the teacher said, sounding impatient.
Roy visibly shook himself out of it, hesitating a moment before singing a song Ed didn’t recognize at all. It... Wasn’t great. His voice sounded fine, of course, better than several of the others even, but the song choice was... Odd. And the look on Roy’s face, getting worse the longer he stood there, made it clear he was completely aware of this.
Ed was trying not to laugh at him. It wasn’t fair, not at the moment, but he just looked so... Uncharacteristically awkward.
“Well, I think that’s enough of that,” Mr. Garfiel interrupted briskly, noting something down.
Roy cringed and headed off stage, dropping into the seat beside Ed with a sigh. He paused for a minute, then turned to give him a look. “I can tell you want to laugh...”
“Sorry,” he said, the laughter slipping out as soon as he opened his mouth, “I swear I’m not laughing at you...”
“Yes you are.”
“No! I wanted to laugh at how awkward you looked!”
“That counts!”
“Well, maybe, but it was funny. Especially because you’re not usually like that...” he said, shrugging a bit, “What song was that, anyway? It was such a weird thing to sing...”
“First thing that popped into my head,” he mumbled, sighing a bit before he admitted, “It’s this... Opening to an anime. One of my aunt’s girls likes it, she was showing it to me yesterday, just sort of... Got stuck in my head.”
“Seriously?” Ed said, trying to fight off laughter again.
Roy turned to him with a halfhearted glare. “If you laugh again...”
“Oh come on, that one’s funny!”
It only takes a few more minutes to get through the rest of the songs, and then Mr. Garfiel cleared his throat.
“Well, that went... Well,” he said, “Now we’ll be moving on to dialogue... I’m going to pair everyone up based on their performance so far, and give you one of three short excerpts to do... One for two boys, one for two girls, one for a boy and a girl, that sort of thing. Just come up here to collect the scenes when I call your name, then take a few minutes to go over the scene with your partner and decide what you want to do.”
Then he started rattling off names, calling Roy and Ed up together toward the end of the list.
“I get the feeling we’re not doing well so far,” Ed commented as they sat back down to look over the scene, “He didn’t look pleased when he saw us...”
“No, he didn’t...” Roy sighed, flipping through the pages, “Wow, the girls... Really weren’t wrong about the way it sounds. Why is it so... Dramatic?”
“Well, it is drama...”
“Yeah, but... Look at it,” Roy huffed as Ed started reading and almost immediately winced, “Do people ever really talk like that?”
“Uh, not really...” Ed said slowly, “Though, I mean... Looks like it’s a fight? Those can get pretty dramatic...”
“Yeah, that’s true,” Roy sighed... frowning at the pages, “I don’t know what to do with this.”
“Me neither. I mean... What are they even fighting about?”
“Well they... Seem to be lovers? Fighting over... Something the one did. Or didn’t do...”
“Yeah, not a lot to go on... Guess we’ll just have to pick something to go with it. Who do you want to play?”
“I don’t know. Flip a coin?”
They didn’t actually flip a coin, mostly because neither one had one on them, but instead just picked at random. They read through the scene for a moment, both trying to decide what to do with it, until they were interrupted by the first pair being called up.
It was Ling and some other boy who hadn’t made an impression on Ed, and the scene was... Interesting. Ling spent the whole time laughing off the argument in a pretty over the top way, while the other guy... Well, he wasn’t bad, but he still didn’t leave an impression on Ed.
Other pairs went up, one by one, and they all started doing the same thing... Playing their scenes just as dramatically as Ling had, with mixed results.
After a couple pairs it started getting repetitive, and Ed tuned out. “We’ve got to figure out how to make this scene sound less stupid...”
“No kidding,” Roy sighed, shaking his head a little, “I don’t want to make it as dramatic as everyone else, but... I have no idea how. It’s a pretty dramatic scene...”
“Guess just... Try to make it sound like a real argument?” Ed offered.
They head up on stage a minute later, and as he’s walking up Ed still has no idea what they’re going to do. He ends up going for barely contained anger for his part... Because, well, every argument he’s ever gotten into has either involved him yelling or barely not yelling, so it seems like it would work. Roy sounds more pleading, like someone who knows he’s done wrong but is trying to make it seem like not that big a deal. Ed thinks it works... At least, it sounds more like a real, everyday argument then the rest of the scenes.
When he looks over at the table, though, his stomach drops. Mr. Garfiel looked, at best, unimpressed... The writer, Mei, looked a little bit happier with the performance, but she mostly just looked hopeful rather than actually pleased. It didn’t go well again.
“Well, at least we tried...” Roy sighed as they sat back down.
“Yeah. Winry can’t yell at me for not trying...” Ed said with a halfhearted little smile... He’d actually started to look forward to this. Or, well, he had started to look forward to the prospect of doing it with Roy.
“Well, that’s basically it...” Mr Garfiel called out a little later, after the last pair finished their scene, “The girls can leave if they want, but if I could ask the boys to stay just a little longer? I want to make sure our leads have chemistry, so I want you to pair up with the person you think you’d do best with and sing a bit of one of their duets... The song is attached to the scenes I gave you.”
Roy perked up a bit. “Last chance to prove ourselves?”
“Yeah, I guess,” Ed said, smiling a bit again, “You and me? I mean, we did well with the karaoke, right?”
“Definitely.”
They reviewed the song for a minute, and Ed felt himself getting hopeful. They could really pull this one off... Especially with how overdramatic Ling and his partner made it, and how everyone followed their direction. He and Roy could do this, not make it stupid, and stand out. He waited, anticipating one of their names being called, as each pair went up to sing the duet.
“Well, that went... Well. I’d like to thank you all for auditioning...” Mr. Garfiel called out, gathering up his papers, when everyone except them had sung, “I’ll be either posting a cast list or a call back list in the next couple days, depending on how the decisions go...”
“Wait, what?” Ed blurted out in protest as the other students started filing out of the theatre, “What about us? We didn’t get a chance to do the duet...”
“Mei, could you clean up these scripts and forms for me, take them to my office?” the teacher said pleasantly before rounding on them, looking at them coldly, “You two are out of the running. For anything.”
“What?” Ed said, gaping, “I mean, I know we didn’t do great, but can’t we have a turn too? We should get another chance...”
“It would be fair, everyone else went,” Roy added, though his voice was lower, almost like he was commenting more to himself or Ed than to the teacher.
“No one else was as big a disaster as you two,” Mr. Garfiel replied harshly, “I’ve never seen a worse audition. I already gave you another chance! Your solos went bad enough, but I thought, maybe you could turn it around with the scene, but no. You didn’t even bother reading the summary of the script, did you?”
“We didn’t know-”
“The sign up sheet said it was available on the website. Right at the bottom.”
“What, seriously?” Ed said, jerking around to look at the sheet, which was still laying on the table nearby. He could see text now, but... “Oh come on, that’s so small! I can barely see it!”
“Regardless,” the teacher said dismissively, “You were massively unprepared, and I have no room in this production for people who can’t work hard and take this seriously.”
“But we can-” Ed started, but Mr. Garfiel just huffed and turned away.
“I have no reason to give you two any more chances.”
The teacher left without another word, leaving both of them sitting in stunned silence.
“That... May have been the worst scolding I’ve ever gotten,” Roy said after a long moment, “At least from a teacher...”
“Definitely up there...” Ed commented himself, cringing as he shook his head, “Damn it. We should have been prepared, this wouldn’t have turned into such a disaster...”
“Neither of us knew what we were getting into...” Roy tried to reassure him, sighing and running a hand through his hair with a sheepish look on his face, “I’ve got to admit... I was really hoping we’d both get cast. Maybe... Get to know each other...”
He smiled back, just a little. “Yeah, me-” he started, whipping around when he heard a noise from the stage, the writer girl having tripped on something and sent papers flying everywhere, “Too... Hey, are you alright?”
The girl’s head snapped up as he came rushing up on stage, immediately giving him a weird smile he... Really didn’t understand in the slightest.
“I’m fine,” she said, “Some id- Somebody just left their bag up here, I didn’t see it with all these papers...”
“What kind of moron just leaves their things laying around in people’s way?” Ed huffed, starting to pick up the papers, “Here, let me help you with that...”
“Oh thank you so much!” she gushed at him, which seemed pretty over the top for something so simple, then proceeded to completely ignore Roy as he came up to them and started to help.
“To be honest... Might not be fair to call whoever it was a moron...” she admitted after a long moment, “I kind of wasn’t paying attention...”
“Why not?” Ed blinked at her, “I mean, kind of seems like you should on a stage, especially when they’re working on the sets already...”
“I know...” she said, ducking her head and looking embarrassed, “I guess I’m just... Upset at the audition...”
Ed winced. “Yeah, sorry about that...”
“Oh, no no no, not you!” she rushed to exclaim, dropping some papers again as she waved her hands, “Well, I mean... You two were kind of a disaster, but I’m not upset about that! It’s... Stupid, stupid Ling...”
“Yeah, my friend mentioned you two didn’t get along...”
“That’s not just it!” she complained, looking miserable, “I’d put up with him if I had to, but did you see what he did with the script? The song? He’s going to ruin my show! Even if we don’t give him a lead, and no one else was that good, he’d still ruin it just... Just by existing! You saw what happened, how they all copied him... He’s always gotten the lead, so everyone thinks that’s what you’re supposed to do, and- Oh, I worked so hard on this!”
“It was pretty overdramatic...” Roy hummed in agreement, eyeing her thoughtfully for a moment before continuing, “Just out of curiosity, what’s it supposed to be like? We couldn’t figure out what the scene was about...”
“Oh, right, you two weren’t prepared...” she said before getting this dreamy look on her face as she continued, “Well, it starts with this rich boy who doesn’t care about anything or anyone except himself... All he wants is to party and have fun, and his mother is desperate to get him to change, even just a little, so she hires him a new tutor. He’s irritated at first, because he thinks he’s too old for tutors and it cuts into his time for himself, but the man she hires is surprisingly attractive so he decides to have some fun and seduce him, then use that to get what he wants. The tutor resists his advances at first, but then succumbs, only by then they’ve started to genuinely bond and instead of it being purely physical like the rich boy wanted, they enter into a real relationship. A secret, forbidden relationship... And as they get closer and closer, the rich boy starts seeing commitment on the horizon and, panicking, tries to keep his tutor at arms length. It all comes to a head at the end of the first act, when they argue about it and the rich boy tries to dismiss his concerns, unaware that his tutor has gotten an offer to study at a prestigious institution far away he’s always dreamed about, and is torn between staying and continuing their relationship or taking the offer, and is just desperately looking for some reason to believe his lover really feels the same for him...”
“Oh. Wow...” Ed said, blinking at her... Enthusiastic description of the plot. “Yeah, I can see why you’d be upset, playing that scene like that would be all kinds of wrong... Though we played it pretty wrong too...”
“Guess that explains why Mr. Garfiel wasn’t pleased with what we did...” Roy hummed, “So, that duet... I’m guessing it comes after?”
She hummed and nodded. “Beginning of act two. The tutor moved away to take the offer and is trying to move on with his life, but regrets how it ended and wishes it could have been different, while the distance makes the rich boy realize his mistake, and his feelings, so he travels to see him and try to set things right...”
“Doesn’t seem like there’d be a whole lot of plot after that...” Ed commented, frowning a bit, “Definitely not half the story...”
“Well, the tutor started dating somebody else in the meantime, and is really hurt over what happened,” Mei said with a shrug, “The second act mostly deals with the rich boy trying to separate the two of them, and slowly realizing he wants to do it because the relationship is making his former lover unhappy, not just so they’ll get back together, and that he wants him happy even if it’s not with him... Though, I mean, they do get back together. I wanted a happy ending...”
“That’s... Pretty good, actually,” Ed said, giving her a bit of a smile (and wondering why she ducked her head at that... Was she shy about people complimenting her work or something?), “Wish I could see it done right...”
“Why don’t we give it a try?” Roy offered, “The duet, at least. We’re here anyway, it’d be nice even if it is just us...”
“Well, you two were my favorite pair who did that scene...” she said slowly, “I mean, it was all wrong, but at least you didn’t turn it into some stupid, awful-”
“Yeah, what the hell, let’s do it,” Ed interrupted before she could ramp up any further, “Think you could play the song for us, Mei?”
“Oh, well... I’m not as good with piano, but...” she said, getting up and going over to the instrument, starting to play the intro to the song. It wasn’t as smooth as the girl who’d been playing for the auditions, but it was good enough for their little impromptu performance.
Roy found the lyrics on one of the little scripts Mei had been carrying when she’d tripped, and they started singing it as they leaned on the piano, standing close together to both see the paper. And it seemed to go well... Now that they had some context, they seemed to fall into the roles naturally, the performance coming easily.
“Oh, you were so good!” Mei cried out as soon as she got to the end, “Why can’t we cast you two, you’d actually do it right!”
“I’m starting to think the same thing.”
Ed jerked around to see Mr. Garfiel standing behind them. “Oh, shit, we... Uh...”
“Were giving the best audition of the day?” he offered with a bit of a smile, then sighed and shook his head, “I’ll admit you two have potential. If you weren’t so unreliable...”
“We didn’t really know what we were getting into, sir,” Roy pointed out slowly, “Neither of us has ever done this before... We should have done a better job, but we had no idea...”
The teacher hummed noncommittally, eyeing them critically for a long moment. “Alright. I’ll give you another chance.”
“Wait, seriously?” Ed exclaimed, eyes going wide.
“Well, that was the best duet by far. I’ll let you come back for callbacks...” he said before pointing at them accusingly, “But you have to prove to me you can commit to this show. Be prepared, be reliable, willing to work hard and be dedicated... If you don’t convince me you are, I don’t care how good you are, I won’t cast you in anything. Understand?”
“Absolutely.”
“Yeah, of course!”
“Alright... I’ll see you at callbacks, then,” he said, picking up the bag from the corner and heading back out of the theatre.
Mei almost squealed in delight. “Oh, this is going to be great! I’m practicing with you both so you have the best call backs ever... Don’t you dare back out, either! I’m counting on you two to save my show!”
“Yeah, alright,” Roy said with a bit of a chuckle, “Just tell us what you want us to do...”

baby gay books.
Originally posted July 20, 2017.
I was back in LA for a month or so and one day I randomly had the urge to check out the library and renew my card. I was really pleased to see that LAPL was really promoting pride month with prominently displayed shelves of LGBTQ Young Adult books, big colorful spreads on the homepage of the website, and even a shoutout printed on all the receipts! It warmed my little gay nerd heart. I love the YA genre and all of its teen angst. Mostly because of academic burnout, I have a hard time making myself pay attention to fancy “adult” books. I get so tired of big words, and I like the instant gratification of tearing through “easy” emotionally saturated YA novels. I went back to my two local branches every few days and walked out with tall stacks overloading my arms. I wanted to write a lot about each one, but that makes me procrastinate on posting, so I'm just going to write a little blurb of whatever comes to mind! Happy to give more detailed recommendations if you want something to read though! (Heads up though, I pulled some of my favorite quotes that I had to mark down while reading, and they might contain spoilers!)
Tumblr media
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz (*****)
This is such a wonderful lovely read! Very tender book about summertime friendship. Does have some scary homophobic violence and hospital stuff, but it does not end in tragedy, at all! Both of the protagonists are Mexican American and they talk about their families.
I wondered what it was like to hold someone's hand. I bet you could sometimes find all of the mysteries of the universe in someone's hand.
Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
So cute! Especially fond of it, because a lot of it centers around rehearsal for Oliver. Pretty heavy public outing plotline. Not everyone is white! Simon, the protagonist, is in a virtual relationship with someone at his school, and it reads kind of like a mystery novel, but the payoff is so lovely and bubbly.
I don’t even know. I’m just so sick of straight people who can’t get their shit together.
You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour & David Levithan (*****)
THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD. I picked it out of the stack on a whim in my last few days in the city, and it was the best one I read. SUCH beautiful and diverse representations of queer relationships: crushes, friend groups, sudden best friends and mended old best friends, friends for dancing/laughing and for watching depression movies in bed all day. There was even a scene at a queer spoken word fundraiser, with all the poems printed out in full. Such beautiful angst. One of the poets was genderqueer and used they/them pronouns! In a popular published book! Seriously, go run and read this one, it's heart-warming and cute and real.
Mark: I look at him in his Star Wars T-shirt and anchor-print boxers, clutching a pillow on this bed we have spent so much of our time in, and what I realize is that somehow, without even knowing it, I have stepped out of love with him, and where I've stepped instead may end up being the better place. I have to step out of love with him, because the ground I've always wanted to be there was never really there. He is capable of giving that ground, but I am not the one he wants to give it to. Instead I have the ground we've grown all these years. I love him indestructibly, and I care about him at a root-level, but in this three-breath-long moment I can understand that the two of us will never be boyfriends, never be husbands, never be everything to each other in that way. I can let that go, and hold tight to everything else. It should feel like a retreat. It should feel like my love is diminishing and my feelings are contracting. But instead I have a sense that they're expanding. And they are doing it because they have to.
Mark: Katie smiles. "Yes--the heart is a treacherous beast, but it means well. That just about sums it up." "What they never tell you is that it's actually the friendship part that's harder. Kissing is easy. Kissing has its own politics, but at the end of the day, it's kissing. It's the real stuff--the being-part-of-each-other's-lives piece of it--" "--being close to twins without being twins--" "Yes! That is both the challenge and the reward." I look at Katie and know that sometimes it isn't all that hard, that sometimes you can just fall into step with someone and keep pace for a good long time. Again, it amazes me that a week ago we barely knew each other's names. Now we're on this journey together.
I have tons of other quotes, but I want to keep it fresh and special for you, pls read! :)
A Love Story Starring My Dead Best Friend by Emily Horner
“I’m not saying it’s right, you know? And I’m not saying it makes any sense that some people draw lines between musicals or flannel or haircuts and who you want to make out with. God knows if shoe shopping and makeup could ungay a person, I’d have had an easier time of things.”
This book is great! Content Warning: the protagonist's best friend Julia is dead, but that should be clear from the title. Jumps back and forth in time, between her road trip right after her friend dies and the current rehearsal process with the group of friends producing Julia's unfinished musical. (Yikes bit: the musical is about singing ninjas, played by mostly white kids who just love Japanese culture...)
“There was this girl,” I said. “I mean—“ All of a sudden I felt flustered and added, “we were just friends.” “No such thing.” “We were.” “Look. Despite what you may have heard, people have sex all the time with people they don’t love, or particularly care about, or sometimes can’t even stand. So why in the world do people say that it’s just friends, like it doesn’t matter as much, if you’re not having sex? Real friendship is true and forever and with all your heart. It’s not Relationship Lite.” (142)
So much good stuff about friendship and love in all its forms!!! I'M HERE FOR BOOKS THAT DEAL WITH FRIENDSHIP IN COMPLEX WAYS WITH JUST AS MUCH CENTRALITY AS ROMANCE NARRATIVES.
"Julia, well—Julia was my friend. I was careful to omit the just when I thought it this time. But I could hardly remember discovering her, could hardly remember her being new to me. I’d never needed to scrutinize her like I was scrutinizing Maggie, trying to figure out the vast sea of what I didn’t know from what was right in front of me. This was new—and I didn’t want to stop just yet.” (149)
Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel by Sara Farizan
I liked this one well enough. The protagonist is Iranian-American and she talked a lot about her family culture and language. Again, there's some horrible outing stuff--one of the characters is a really awful person and her dialogue was hard to read. There were also some questionable moments kind of belittling and making fun of theatre techs and stage managers (in awe of the coveted actors) that rubbed me the wrong way, but I still love books about gay teens doing high school theatre!
It astounds me that Tess is as brilliant as she is and still hasn't figured out I'm gay. I wish there was a manual on how to come out and what a young gay person is supposed to do. Like, is there a secret handshake I don't know about?
"No boy is harmless, especially around my daughters. We should have sent you to an all girls school." Ha! I would really never get any work done. (30)
None of the Above by I. W. Gregorio
The only book I read about intersex teens. I am not sure its reception in the intersex community, but it feels like a so-so book. It was written by a doctor who had an intersex patient and got /inspired/ which feels like a red flag. The main character struggles a lot with her "diagnosis" and has a lot of internalized self-loathing. A bunch of problematic ideology and slurs in some parts, but she also has great conversations with some other intersex girls through a support group. I am not qualified to know how well it portrays these topics--I have more community-based reading to do, however I will say that I'm not sure how well the author handled the topic of surgery.
Naomi and Ely's No-Kiss List by Rachel Kohn & David Levithan
I tried to start reading this one, but I didn't give it much of a chance. Not a fan of the writing or the characters. Apparently it got made into a movie though, with Victoria Justice!
Tessa Masterson Will Go To Prom by Emily Franklin & Brendan Halpin
Intense read, but the payoff was so lovely! It's one of those books where the first-person narration switches back and forth each chapter between two characters: gay Tessa who wants to bring her girl crush to prom in a conservative small town, and straight Lucas, the best friend, who realizes his love and extravagantly asks Tessa to prom. Most of the book is a pretty brutal homophobic uproar about this girl wanting to wear a tux and bring a girl to prom, but *spoiler alert!* it ends with mended friendship and a big gay party.
"You want to watch movies or something? I just got Bringing Up Baby! Katherine Hepburn!"
"Black-and-white and you going goo-goo about your crush all night? Can I ask you something? I mean, if you're attracted to girls and stuff, why can't we watch one of those videos where drunk girls lift their shirts up or something?"
"Lucas, I'm a lesbian. That doesn't mean I'm a man."
It's funny. When I imagined this--dancing with Tessa at Prom--it wasn't like this at all. First of all, in my imagination, she was wearing something that at least suggested that she has breasts. But also, when I imagined my hand on her hip, it wasn't just that I imagined something more satiny than a tuxedo under my hand, but I thought the touch would be electric, that it would be the moment when our friendship turned to love. Dumb ass. It was love all along. Just not, you know, that kind of love.
"Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna have a hard time finding somebody to dance with," Tessa says. She gestures at the scene. The dance floor is already full, and people are still streaming in through the front door. There's some up-tempo dance-pop number playing, and the floor is jumping with joyful dancing like I've seen. Tessa is not the only girl in a tux, but there are also girls in Prom dresses and combat boots, girls in regular Prom dresses, guys in dresses, guys in tuxes, and a fair number of people who are either male or female, but it's not clear from what they're wearing or who they're dancing with. And, at the wall, there are about forty girls giving Tessa that I'm-trying-get-up-the-courage-to-ask-you-to-dance look. She smiles.

Non-LGBT YA Books I've Been Reading:
Golden Compass and Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman
I was really excited to revisit this series from my youth. (I don't actually know if I ever made it past the first one as a kid though.) It didn't really hold up for me. Didn't even feel like reading the finale of the trilogy. Not sure how I feel about the intensely religious undertones and "soul" business. Also, I remembered Lyra as a badass girl protagonist, but she gets kinda shunted into supporting the ever-so-special boy, Will by the second book. Also, *spoiler!* throughout the books, the witches and other important adults are all whispering and obsessed with this important little girl Lyra, though they know her by another name. The big reveal: she is the new Eve, meant to be mother of all? Idk, man... Not into it.
Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick
So lovely and quick to read! Brian Selznick is a very inventive and moving author. (If you haven't seen his books before, they alternate between sections of text and series of gorgeous full-page pencil drawings. He wrote The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which was made into a lovely Martin Scorsese film with Asa Butterfield. Anyway, I really enjoyed this one, full of nighttime museum adventures, Deaf culture and sign language, wolves, and family reunions. Highly recommend checking this one out from the library! It's a heavy brick, but only takes a few hours to read. Ooh and apparently, it also got made into a movie, coming out this October! Looks good, and they cast a Deaf actress, Millicent Simmonds as Rose. Looking forward to it!!!

Every of numbered ask for the pride ask thing
Hey anon! I’m gonna assume you mean odd so here it goes.
1.  What is your sexuality?I identify as queer because sexuality is very fluid and I feel constrained by labels but lesbian probably fits best.
3.  How long have you been aware of your sexuality/gender?I realized that I was not straight in 8th grade, about five years and two months ago. I started questioning gender-y stuff around the middle of 10th grade, so about three and a half years ago.
5.  Share a positive memory about coming out!I received nothing but acceptance from just about everyone that I’ve ever come out to. My best friend my sophomore year was only offended that I didn’t tell her sooner.
7.  Do you participate in pride related events? Any other events?I wish!! I have never had the opportunity to, mostly because I’ve been playing softball on the weekends every summer since 2011. I really wanted to go to Cleveland’s events this year, but of course, I have tournaments. I’m involved with our LGBT Center on my campus though and go to a lot of their sponsored events. 9.  Do you feel pride in who you are?Yes! I have come a long way to accept my gender and sexuality as they are, and to accept my past identities as valid points in my life. I’m proud to be the cute, queer, confused kid I’ve grown up to be.
11. Tell us about your first crush? It’s kinda silly, but I’ve always had a crush on my high school band director. She was sort of the reason that I realized I was gay. But she is really cute, intelligent, sarcastic, hilarious in her own way, and really doesn’t give a damn what other people think about her. I’ve always admired that. And my lil (massive) crush on her was the reason that I joined all of the clubs and groups in high school that shaped my passion for music and theatre, so I really owe her a lot of my adolescence.
13. Have you come out to friends and family? All of my friends definitely know. Especially in college, I’ve learned to be really open about who I am, and being queer is a big part of who I am, so I let that be known. Family, not so much. My immediate family, mom, dad, and little brother know but don’t talk about it. I’m not very close with my extended family, so it’s just kind of something that doesn’t need to be talked about right now.
15. Do you believe there is a “closet” to come out of?The closet is just a metaphor for the compulsive and assumed heterosexuality that every human is chained to from the moment they’re born. Coming out of the closet is the act of breaking down the locked doors that society has configured around you. I wish that everyone could just express themselves how they want and fall in love with the people that they fall in love with and it not have to be a big deal but humanity isn’t quite ready for that.
17. What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to LGBTQ+ characterization in media?“Bury your gays” really pisses me off. I just want to see characters in TV shows and movies that don’t die or go through horrific trauma for shock value or entertainment. I also don’t always need a tragic backstory for every queer character in their coming out/coming of age story. Some people are gay. I was 100% chill with it from the morning I woke up and realized it. I started coming out to people right away because I had the privilege and confidence to do so. I want queer characters who are just queer and that be the end of it.
19. What did your teachers say about the LGBTQ+ community in school?Honestly, they really didn’t. I’m from a very small, very rural area where a lot of people just don’t really acknowledge that queer people exist or that they interact with them on a daily basis. We never learned about same-sex intercourse in sex ed, we never talked about gay themes in English classes (despite the HEAVY gay themes in tons of classic literature), and we never were told about the sexualities of some of the greatest leaders in history. I came out during a speech in my 10th grade English class, and my teacher couldn’t stop smiling, but we never mentioned it again. We just didn’t talk about it.
21. What’s an absolute turn off for you in the same/opposite gender?Well I really really hate people who are manipulative and will twist their words or make your feel guilty just to get what they want out of you. I’m gonna go with that.
23. How do you feel about LGBTQ+ clubs/apps/websites?I love spaces that are made for and meant for queer people. Straight people are exhausting to be around all the time. My gay group chats are honestly the best escape from the world around me, and they’re always beautifully supportive environments full of people that you know have gone through similar things that you have.
25. How does your country view the LGBTQ+ community?I’m from the United States so until Cheeto Voldemort seized control in his tiny hands, I thought we were actually getting somewhere and would eventually end up within a couple strokes of par for the developed world in terms of LGBT equality and trans rights and equal opportunity but alas.
27. Any tips for heterosexual and/or cisgender people on how to handle LGBTQ+ events/news?Know your place as a cis/het ally and do not make the news about you. Respect the lives and accomplishments of LGBT individuals. Raise them up, say their names. Honor them. Be a good ally, and teach others how to be good allies too.
29. How do you feel about receiving questions about your sexuality/gender?I love answering questions about sexuality and gender, be it my specific identities or otherwise. My identity is a big old jumble of who the hell knows what, so it’s fun to explain non-specific identities to people who are curious. I also spent a lot of time when I was in high school learning about a ton of different gender and sexual identities while trying to find a label that fits me, so I know quite a bit about lots of different things that span gender identity and sexuality. Also, generally people who are asking about my identity are also queer themselves and are curious, or they’re unsure of my pronouns, so they ask in a respectful way which I am very thankful for!!
If you’re ever curious about anything or you just want to talk, my inbox is always open! Thanks for this ask, anon. It was really fun.

New Post has been published on https://shovelnews.com/mum-was-and-still-is-a-very-funny-person-i-want-to-show-theres-another-side-to-dementia/
'Mum was and still is a very funny person. I want to show there's another side to dementia'
THE DYNAMICS OF my relationship with my mother have greatly changed over the last few years, as I’ve become one of her carers while she lives with dementia.
Our evolved bond has really opened my eyes into seeing how we as a society address our older generations and the illness. As a dancer, I’m well versed in supporting my fellow dancers in our movements – so I’ve created a show called Assisted Solo, where I want to explore and highlight how important it is that we all support each other to live our best ‘solo’.
The theme of dementia and working with my mum was something that happened secondarily – it wasn’t the initial idea. When I make my work I like to go into the studio and see what happens. Work surprises you – your subconscious surprises you.
I’m one of five siblings. I was looking after my mum and I thought this is what it is, I am assisting her in her solo. At the same time it is not always clear who is assisting who, because I am learning a lot from this experience.
‘There’s space for humour’
Luca Truffarelli
Often when I talk to people about my mum’s dementia they go “that’s awful”. It is, but it’s something gradual and it’s been happening gradually over the years. There’s space for humour, space for laughter. It’s not all doom and gloom. In my work I use humour a lot. Mum was a funny person and still is a very funny person. I want to show there is another side to this situation.
It sounds really weird but one of the experiences that I have had from looking after my mother, and I’m sure my other brothers agree: once you accept what is going on and you learn to live with it, there are positives in it. It feels with my mum my relationship has now gone full circle – I have gone from being the child and being cared for to being the carer and I know her as a more childlike person.
One of the beautiful things I notice is the essence of her is still exactly the same.
She doesn’t always know my name. She’ll randomly say names, and sometimes she’ll get it. And sometimes I could be her father, sometimes I could be her son, maybe her husband or her lover. She might not always be able to pinpoint who it is but there’s love there.
We filmed some footage for the show in my mum’s house. Suddenly we found we had all these hours of material and it became clear she was integral to the show. There was an overarching theme that connects what we’re doing in Assisted Solo.
The thing I’m trying to do is show: this is life.
A lot of people suffer from dementia in this country, and I wanted to show it’s not all terrible. It’s difficult to explain, but I think among the changes in my mum and the tough situations there’s also space for laughter and personal growth.

‘You have to find something beautiful in everything’
It seems like two or three years, but it’s actually six or seven years since my mum got sick. It starts in such a subtle way, there are so many ways of denying it. Oh, she’s just being like this, just being like that.
I was ill and feeling sorry for myself and I went to see her, and she cheered me up. When I went to her again the next day she didn’t remember. I realised oh God, chunks of her memoryare disappearing. Like my father’s funeral, she initially forgot my father’s funeral.
And they’re the tough moments, but once you face things and accept the situation I think you can still find beauty in your relationship. I love her so much, she is so beautiful – and there is so much to learn from her still.
One of the things that I’ve really noticed is that her filter has been removed. It means she’s incredibly open and this really comes through in the video material. It’s incredibly beautiful to watch and that’s why we decided to use it.
There is a moral dilemma around that. She can’t make the decision – I have to make the decision for her . I am very protective of her, I want to show her in a very particular light but I want to get the message across as well.
My brothers are understanding about the show. It’s so important to tell this story, it’s one of the most important things I have done.
I think it’s too much to say that people will come away thinking ‘oh dementia is great’, because it isn’t. It’s very difficult. But as long as there is love you can get through all sorts of things. Love conquers all: it sounds like such a ridiculous cliche but it is true.
My dance show is about the idea of dependency and being independent. It explores the concept of ‘solo’ and what a solo really is. The reason I’ve called it Assisted Solo is because even in my work, when I’ve danced solos in the past, you’re never really alone. There are all these people making it happen and supporting you and this is true in life.
Having someone dependent on you
Source: Luca Truffarelli
As a gay man, I don’t think I’ll have kids. The only thing I’m solely responsible for is my dog and the biggest question that arises from this situation is, ‘who will look after him while I’m away?’
With my mum I have come to understand what it is to have somebody completely dependent on you and the responsibility of having a person who needs you 100%. That’s one thing that has been really tough but beautiful.
It’s also broken an intimacy barrier. By keeping her in her own home, I need to deal with the everyday realities of caring for someone, like washing her and changing nappies.  This isn’t always easy but I know my family’s situation is a luxury, as there are five of us sharing the responsibility.
I also think about how caring for someone can have an impact on one’s own sexuality. How do you still manage to feel sexually attractive and in the mood for physical contact after caring for someone in this way? These are the things I also touch upon in the piece.
Caring for my mum has been a really beautiful experience. We can get so caught up in society worrying about intimacy and body contact, and thinking ‘oh that’s weird, that’s strange, I couldn’t do that with my own mum’. But why not? It’s just another human body and it’s a person who’s changed a lot of your nappies! I for one am very glad I’ve got to go on this journey.
Philip Connaughton is a contemporary dancer and creator of Assisted Solo, which will debut at the Dublin Fringe Festival from 7 – 15 September, followed by a performance at the Everyman Theatre on 22 September. For tickets, visit the Dublin Fringe Festival website.

so, how's life? It’s kinda in the middle. I bought gifts for my Gab’s family and I went from having P4000 ($80) to measly P250 ($5) but it’ll be SO worth it because I got them stuff that they really wanted. I don’t even regret losing that much money because I found it fulfilling to be buying gifts for a family that I do love.
[huge, pulsating trigger warning] On the other hand, I went into a panic attack and started hyperventilating when my mom scolded me the other night. She mocked my breathing the entire time and told me–in the middle of my panicked breathing–that I was crying over something small. She also tried to wrestle my phone away from me and I have claw marks on my arm from that. So life at home is preeeetty fucking good, if you ask me. how many hours of sleep would you say you got last night? I think I made it to six. what's the last book you read, was it good? I don’t remember the last book I read, dude. what color are the walls in your bedroom? White. do you have pictures of your friends, and family in your bedroom? Friends, yes. ‘Family’ fuck no.
do you have posters of celebrities on the walls in your bedroom? Yeah several. who is the last person you said "just leave me alone," to? I think it was my mom. Ugh I hate having to call her that can I just call her abusive grumpy woman who lives under the same roof? ever had a really bad sunburn? When I was a kid yeah. The ones on my shoulder hurt theee most. I don’t get sunburns at all anymore. who is the last person to ask you out? Gab but that was like a year ago. what is the last amusement park you went to? Legoland in Malaysia, four years ago. I’m not too big on amusement parks. do you think a lot before you go to sleep at night? Sometimes. Riverdale Recap and Review - Season 1 - Chapter 8 - The Outsiders by Andrew Buckley
There quite literally is not one happy marriage happening in Riverdale. Maybe it’s the water, maybe it’s the maple syrup, maybe it’s the disturbing amount of redheads . . . but relationships are not meant to survive in that town. Tensions ran high in this episode with double crosses and back alley deals happening all over the place. Riverdale is a dangerous place to live. But they do have Skeet Ulrich, so there’s that. Let’s get to it . . .
How many times can you reference abortion without actually saying the word ‘abortion’? I counted five times, but I may have missed one. I’m assuming it’s a CW censorship thing, but I was surprised they had to avoid the word as it’s absence made it all the more obvious, but I suppose that was the point. This week, Mr. Cooper became oh so much darker than just some guy who breaks into the Sheriff’s house to steal his murder wall. He’s harboring such a hatred for the Blossoms that he actually wanted his daughter to abort the baby. The guy is certainly carrying enough hate to push him over to the darkside, but his banishment from the Cooper household says a lot more about Alice Cooper (the blonde chick, not the guy who used to bite heads off chickens on stage) than it does about him. Mrs. Cooper has always seemed so controlled in her insanity, however we certainly saw some cracks as she tries to deal with the Blossom family now trying to steal her daughter, while also revealing her own shadowy past, also at the hands of her husband. There goes another Riverdale marriage.
Polly herself is still severely lacking as a character and I think it’s partly due to us not really knowing her. The reason we care so much about who killed Jason, and not about Jason himself is because we never got a chance to know him. All we really know is he had terribly fake-looking red hair and apparently he was a mute. The same almost goes for Polly. We met her at the mental asylum where she was hysterical and she hasn’t really calmed down since. Okay, so the father of her child was murdered, her dad tried to have her abort her baby, the father’s family want to keep the baby, her parents sent her to a mental asylum, and now she’s back, there’s a power struggle over this child who will undoubtedly have fake-looking red hair. Okay, fine. She has every right to be hysterical. Unfortunately, her lack of grounding as a character is making it really hard to sympathize with her. Maybe that’ll change now she’s a member of the Blossom household. By making the choice to join the Blossoms, she’s effectively shunning her own family. And who can blame her?
Speaking of the Blossoms, let’s take a moment to appreciate just how awesome Granny Blossom is. Come on, that crazy old lady is great. Part horror story cliche, part gypsy, part crypt keeper. She keeps getting better and better.
Fred Andrews and his business woes seeped throughout most of the story this episode. With the Blossoms wanting to buy the old movie theatre land, and Mr. Lodge being the secret buyer, and Hermione knowing this but not telling Fred, we can clearly see another relationship is about to go down the toilet. It all makes for interesting TV though, so who cares? Fred confronting Clifford Blossom was a nice scene but it felt a little empty with Fred not really having a good threat to come back with. Too bad he doesn’t have a biker gang working for him . . . oh wait.
It was a touching moment when Archie and his pals came out to work for his dad, even more so when Fred and Archie have their heart to heart in the kitchen later. While I didn’t love this episode as much as past ones, I did love this scene. And it wasn’t just Luke Perry’s sincere delivery, it was the balancing out of Fred and Archie’s relationship. While Archie’s legacy speech was a bit on the flawed side, the messaging was still solid and the Andrews boys still represent a united front that doesn’t appear to exist anywhere else in town. This is of course after Fred tries to solve the problems he’s experiencing himself, and Archie walks into a biker bar. We’ve yet to see Mary Andrews but we know she’s coming (bring it on Molly Ringwald), so we’ll likely see that balanced father/son relationship shaken again very soon.
Skeet freakin Ulrich as Jughead’s dad is fast becoming one of my favourite characters. After we saw all his misgivings in the last episode, it was nice to see him find a bit of redemption here. His volunteering information to Jughead and Betty regarding Jason and then rounding up a crew to help out Fred proves that Mr. Jones isn’t all that bad of a guy. Well, except for him having Jason’s jacket, and that he uses teenagers to sell drugs, oh and he’s the leader of a violent biker gang, and that he has Joaquin (who I’m still saying is Jason’s murderer) cozy up to the delightful Kevin . . . so yeah, never mind, he’s a bad guy.
STORY FLAW ALERT! - Mr. Jones tells Hermione that it was likely Mr. Lodge who had people disrupt the construction site and beat up Moose. He blames it on Hermione getting frisky with Fred and someone ratted her out (Veronica, clearly Veronica) and that the incident was part of a jealous attack? On property he owns? Disrupting the building of his weird hipster community housing? Where he stands to make a lot of money? And didn’t Clifford Blossom all but admit to being the culprit in order to bleed the owner of the land dry? Something isn’t adding up there but maybe it’s all a bunch of red herrings. Or trout. Or whatever fish happens to be native to Riverdale.
This was a setup episode, inserted so we can get from here to there. The Jason story got moved along with Mr. Jones and Joaquin (the murderer) hiding the jacket. Polly moving in with the Addams family effectively destroys the ‘Stepford Family’ archetype that the Coopers had been trying to project. Fred and Mr. Jones getting the band back together means it’s being setup to be broken apart again later. And the looming threat of Mr. Lodge stretched its shadowy tendrils a little bit further.
Next week sees the return of Ethel (finally!), though it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting an answer to the burning question on everyone’s mind: Where is Hotdog?
Until next week . . .
STRAY THOUGHTS OF AWESOMENESS . . .
- Valerie was there, but . . . not really there? True, there wasn’t much room for development of Varchie? Valerchie? Archerie? (we’ll need to work on that) Hopefully we’ll be able to see more of that relationship over the coming weeks.
- Same goes for Bughead. Not the best way to start a relationship, amid a murder investigation and a crazy pregnant sister, though we’d still like to see some development happening here. And more than just ‘yeah, my Dad’s a biker’.
- Sheriff Keller - Absolutely terrible at his job. Fortunately for him, he appears to be the only law enforcement agent in all of Riverdale so he’s got great job security.
- Was anyone else hoping that Moose would lay some smack down on those two guys? I mean, c’mon, he’s Moose!
- Archie and Jughead’s ‘bro moment’ was underwhelmed by the lack of conflict. Archie got a little angry, Jughead got a little sad, and then all was well again.
- I kinda love how much Kevin loves the Lodges. From his awe over Veronica’s party invites to complementing Hermione’s shoes. Yeah he’s a walking gay stereotype, but he’s adorable.
