Details from Richie’s death that break my heart
(Really specific because NPMD has been in my head since September the 15th and I think that scene is HEARTBREAKING)
Also MAJOR THANKS to @jensen-frackles for the gifs 🫶
-this
Tumblr media
-how he sort of colapses in the stairs while trying to run away from Max + his reaction when Max “closes” the doors
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-the fact that he was on the floor when he begged Max not to kill him + through the whole “who will pray for me” part
Tumblr media
-the way Jon closes his eyes when he sings “when my body’s gone” for the second time
Tumblr media
-he was forced to ask himself WHO WOULD PRAY FOR HIM WHEN HIS BODY IS GONE?!?!
-The fact that Max tells him “this is the consequence for what you’ve done” when “what they did” was try to stop him from bullying them non stop which led to a tragic accident
-“I’M NOT A LOSER!” (+ again the fact that Jon sings this through closed eyes)
Tumblr media
-the way everyone is sort of like a witness to his death in the back idk the real symbolism but it gives me chills
-that he begs Max by his name in the end (“no, please, Max”) @jensen-frackles
-the fact that NOBODY notices he isn’t around after he dies (when they go to school the next day)
-very specific but, the first lines Richie sings are: “I’m dead, the blood is all but draining from my head, (…), my pulse is certainly dropping, and my life is hanging on by a thread.” And that breaks me because the thought of Richie, alone, scared and in pain, bleeding out on the floor, while a football match is going on outside is too much
-Finally, the way he shrinks himself down 😭

Nerdy Prudes and the Colors of Love
One of my favorite Nerdy Prudes design details is how all of the couples are color-coordinated with each other. Like, we've all gone feral over Lautski both starting out with green before transitioning to red at the end. But it's not just them! Mark and Karen Chasity are both in pink/purples and tans. As their daughter, Grace wears some spots of pink, but on the whole shares her own color scheme of blues, whites, and grays with Max. Kyle and Brenda are also in those colors, though in their case it's a more specific match-up of Hatchfield High School athletic uniforms. And then Jason very specifically matches with Grace at the end (RIP).
On a similar note, it's kinda' fun that Steph and Max, noted bigwigs on campus, wear deep, bold shades of their signature colors, whereas Pete and Grace, their respective nerdy, unpopular love interests, are in much more muted palettes.
Just a couple of things I noticed and thought were interesting. I love costume design so much and June Saito knocked it out of the park!

I finally watched VHS Christmas Carol Live last night, and I loved it! I wanted to give some initial thoughts:
The music SLAPS! Like, so good! I'm not usually much of an 80's pop person, but honestly it was bop after bop the whole time. Bah Humbug, That Scrooge, Christmas Electricity, and Priceless were all highlights for me. I think what sold it for me was how lyrically tight it was, and how strong the emotions were. Telling a story entirely through song is no easy feat, but they absolutely nailed the structure and pacing.
Speaking of the emotions, Christmas Carol has been adapted so many times, that it's really important to hit all the emotional beats to sell the spirit of the story, and VHS delivers. I feel like many adaptations go all in on the misery, regret, and sorrow of the story, and only really bring the cheer and warmth in at the very end. VHS really embraces not only the somber parts of the tale, but the joyful parts too. Fezziwig's Chistmas party, Fred's party, and the Crachit's family dinner all really portray the joyfullness of the season and how that joyfullness can come from many places. It really strengthens the message of the story in a way that adaptations focused only on the bleak aspects miss.
In terms of actual story decisions, VHS really sticks to the classic story very closely and does it really well. Actual story changes are few and far between, but the ones they included I really liked. I loved the addition of the couple who are thankful that Scrooge died because it relieves their debt. It really highlights that Crachit and his family are not the only people affected by Scrooge's greed. Many adaptations either like to forget he's a landlord, or don't unpack the ethics of landlords, so it was nice to see some sort of acknowledgment of Scrooge's less direct and more systemic impact. I also really liked how Scrooge delivered the turkey to the Crachit's in secret, and didn't give Bob his raise until after Christmas instead of barging in unannounced. I had never really thought about it before, but in most versions he does just kind of barge in on their celebration and make a big production of giving Bob a raise. I like how he let them have their celebration in peace and spent more time with Fred.
The performances were all killer. I know it kinda goes without saying at this point, but everyone in the cast in Starkid shows are always so talented. Special mention to James Tolbert, because I feel like he doesn't get enough recognition for what a talented actor, dancer, and choreographer (and director) he is. This was also my first time seeing Janaya Mahealani Jones in anything, and her Belle really blew me away. Other stand-outs for me were Dylan Saunders' Scrooge, Lauren Lopez and Joey Ritcher's Crachits, and Jaime Lyn Beatty's Ghost of Christmas Past, but really everyone knocked it out of the park.
June Saito's costumes! The 80s themeing was outstandingly executed, and the quick changes were really impressive. I've gotten used to the more realistic and toned down costumes that fit the Hatchetfield shows' setting (which are also fantastic, not trying to minimize those), but between this and the LiB's in NPMD, it's wonderful to see June Saito get to really go over the top. Special mention to Marley's costume (silver chain pants? silver chain pants!), the 3 spirit's silver and blue color themeing, and that sequined suit jacket Scrooge wears at the end of the show.
Overall, really good. Might pay for the VHS Carols digital ticket later today and watch it.

okay so i just noticed something and it’s kinda adorable
jemilla’s anklets match schwoopsie’s bracelet, and jemilla’s frill on her top matches schwoopsie’s skirt
and schwoopsie’s anklet matches jemilla’s necklace
and as we know they’re married
so now i’m wondering if couples in the tribe start to match each other when they get married
and i’m also wondering if jemilla adds purple to her ensemble after she marries zazzalil, and if zazzalil adds turquoise to hers

slowpez8: 🚨WEDDING DUMP PART 3 OF ????🚨 Happy 2024, these are from July 2023, which is actually perfect. We’re moving on to the most important part of the night: DANCE. My question is: how many pics of our hot friends meeting God on the dance floor can you handle? Because I have about 500 more.
1) Dancers. 2) & 3) @mellowchihuahua & @thedeedsdonovan blessed us all this night. Joey and I wanted to make a version of the Cha Cha Slide that forced everyone to do a bunch of inane miming. We asked Nick to write it for us and he enlisted Denise to lead all the choreo/miming for everyone. They did the most incredible job! Having everyone on the dance floor committing so hard to this stupid dance was one of the best moments of my life!!! Thank you Deans!!! 4) - 9) Hot people meeting God! 10) The amazing DJ Dani from @dartcollective who kept the dance floor fuckin’ packed allll night and was a champ about the 3 million “must play” songs we gave her! Thank you Dani!!!
I’m panicking because I have so many more pics and everyone looked so good and I’ll never be able to post all of them, it kills me!!!! Amazing 📸 by @annielesser !

Baby doodles
Tumblr media
Done a couple of drawings of whenever the kiddos were younger
This is of all four of the main fankids as babies
Tumblr media
This is a thing of baby Anni spending time with her mother Pomni
I’m thinking of possibly making more characters to add into this
Maybe OCs that are humans that get trapped in the digital circus and end up getting adopted by some of the other canon characters..? I’m not sure yet but I’ll figure everything out as I go

something else of interest from "la di da da day"- jeff's got a letterman jacket with "j" on it. considering peter's in this song in his costume and they had nerdy prudes must die written pretty early on, i wonder if they were considering jeff for playing the jagerman at this point?

Also totally just realized that Kim’s Nibbly wig having PIGTAILS was likely a direct reference to all the pig imagery both spread throughout Honey Queen and generally associated with Nibbly, and my mind is BLOWN.

Empty Movement's 2023 Revolutionary Girl Utena UPDATE
Tumblr media
Fashionably late? As always. 2023 was a HUGE year for Empty Movement, so much so that to confess, we did a big fail in actually keeping up with sharing the stuff we did! OOPS. So finally, we proudly bring you: all the Revolutionary Girl Utena content we dropped in 2023. Essays, artbooks, CD information, you name it. Click below for the entire site update, or get it at the source, as always, at ohtori.nu.
In Analysis (Fan Essays): • seebee's essay The Power of Living an Embodying Narrative is about more than Utena, it's about the fandom--including us. We were both interviewed for this piece, and the result is an absolutely beautiful essay that has helped inform how we do Utena stuff going forward. Thank you so much for letting us be part of this! • seebee's VIDEO essay FILM CUTS BACK | transfeminism in utena absolutely blew our minds and it's so good we're listing it. Look at the title. Just go watch it, it rules. • Nicole Winchester's essay No Choice But To Become Witches: The Bishōjo-Demonic Phallic Mother Dichotomy in Revolutionary Girl Utena catches you up to speed on the academic discussion around what might best be described as the shoujo manga iteration of the Madonna-Whore complex. Then, naturally, it finds plenty to say about Utena. Great work that was well worth the coding!
------------
In From the Mouths of Babes (Translated Meta/Creator Content): • Cross X Talk, A Round Table Discussion Commemorating the Second Musical Utena GOGAI FUCKIN' GOGAI. Nagumo and friends bring us the final untranslated part of the 2019 Black Rose Musical's program guide: the monster interview with Ikuhara and the director of the musicals, Yoshitani. INCREDIBLE content here that 100% lives up to the first musical's similar encounter! A must read!! • The Rose Apocalypse's Ei Takatori Interview The director of the mysterious 1999 musical (yes the machine gun one, and YES WE HAVE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT IT COMING) interviewed in The Rose Apocalypse book. This...is that. Thank you so much to iris hahn for translating, and I can't wait to bring you more of this mythology!!! • The Utena Dossier Animage Magazine's June 1997 supplemental, this 36-page Utena tome has ben translated by Nagumo with editing by Ayu Ohseki. Because so much of the content is in its visual presentation, I worked the translation into the original scans! Check it out! (PS. Yes that is an entirely different gallery on the emptymovement.com domain, no this won't stay there, yes it has been a weird couple years.) The Dossier includes two long interviews that are also worked into html pages for easy viewing! The Auspicious Joining of Manga and Anime: Saito and Hasegawa For Whom the Director Smiles: Ikuhara and Kitakubo
-------------
In Historia Arcana & The Bibliothèque (Untranslated Resources): • There are a lot of changes happening in this arena!!! How and where to place different materials has been a moving target, so I'll do my best! The sites don't quite reflect this yet, but Historia Arcana will be for cover to cover Utena media, including special magazine publications. Something Eternal's gallery, the Bibliothèque, will be for magazine articles, clippings, and other things. Major artbooks will likely be in both places, cross referenced. New books in Historia Arcana: • The Rose Spiral: Reflections on the Mythology of Utena While not strictly official, this is a fan published book of in depth analysis of Utena, circa 1998! Yep, cover to cover. • Revolution Dictionary (OST 1 First Press Bonus) Cross-referenced from Audiology, this is the bonus dictionary you only got if you grabbed it early! Cool! • Revolutionary Girl Utena Making of Visuals Book Art of UTENA I am mentioning this for completions sake and because I already uploaded it, but this is a cover to cover high resolution, uncleaned scan of the 1999 Art of Utena artbook. I am going to clean the scans, and ultimately be posting the official artbooks elsewhere. • Revolutionary Girl Utena Photobook: Rose Memories This special Animage bonus could be purchased for 700 yen, and back then, was probably a great way to keep the anime in your pocket! It's entirely shots from the TV series, though, so there's nothing specifically new. But I scan it all, baby. New books in the Bibliothèque: • Chiho Saito's 1999 Revolutionary Girl Utena Original Illustration Collection HI THIS IS A VERY BIG DEAL. Read more about why when you visit! TLDR? Here's some of the best artwork of Utena, rescanned and remastered by yours truly to be the best big big scans of big big beautiful Chiho Saito Art. This is a feast. I even made myself a calendar! (Note that the price is such that I don't make a profit on these, so if you're looking to donate, definitely go by other routes, haha.) You will find multiple ways to obtain the scans, and in more than one size. Either way you soak up the rays, enjoy 'em! New articles and clips in the Bibliothèque: • H! Rockin' on Japan Magazine Saito X Oikawa This fashion music magazine's July 1999 article has ALREADY BEEN TRANSLATED? Like, I am going to add the translation officially to the site of course, but holy hell Nagumo is amazing!! This article is actually the origin of a Saito art piece that uh, well. Now we know she went to a love hotel with movie Akio's VA. Cool! Anyway check it out! • Comickers Magazine, August 1997 This absolute monster find is an industry-focused magazine with this gorgeous spread and interview with Chiho Saito. It gets into how she does things. The making of Utena. All kinds of stuff. I'd LOVE to know more about this one!! • Comickers Magazine, June 1998 Again, an industry-focused publication, this time it's exploring the manga and the anime and how they compare. Again looks like a tasty meal!! • Volks Magazine, Spring 2022 YEP SCANS OF THE BOOK OF THE DOLLFIES. For a lot of us, this is at close as we get to these ludicrously gorgeous dolls. I included a few extra pages because they were just fuckin' cool and felt relevant. • Sega Saturn Magazine, December 1997 One of two grabs I got recently on Yahoo! Japan! This appears to be the first look announcement of the 1998 Utena video game! (Yes we have more on it, yes we will eventually post links.) • Sega Saturn Magazine, April 1998 This feature brings attention to the voice actors, who are all returning for the game! • Dengeki G's Magazine, January 1998 Another gaming focused magazine, with frankly a more adult edge, cheaply lets the readers know about Utena. These three game magazine moments are just a bizarre reminder of how we did things before the internet, LMAO
---------------
In Audiology (Music and CD Information): • Complete information about the STAR CHILD - Girls Character Song Best album! You also definitely can't grab the two new remix tracks there. • Did you know there was a first press bonus dictionary for the first OST? I DIDN'T UNTIL RECENTLY. Now I know all about it, and so can you. Check it out! Obviously, scans available, both here and in Historia Arcana. • I FINALLY acquired a complete set of the Utena CD singles!! Check out complete track lists, scans, and information for ALL FIVE Utena singles. Yes. Including the movie Akio guy's one.
----------------
In The Doujinshi Gallery: • Several dozen dounjinshi were uploaded earlier in the year, and can be found listed on the Site Update archive here.
---------------
That's all for now, folks! There's so so so much coming. I have the episode 18 and 20 (!!!!) storyboards to scan, as well as a fully translated scanlation of The Duelist Bible. We're planning to do something for Anthy's rare LEAP YEAR birthday coming up, probably a musical stream or something! Love!

the npmd costuming is awesome pt 2 (the lords in black!!)
ok ranting about the lords in black costuming (in no particular order)
pokey- absolute SLAY. the feathery collar, reminiscent of a feather boa, the shimmery/sparkly jacket, the beret with the little tuft on the top- AND THE MASK. oh my god do i love his mask. like it’s obviously meant to be the face on the pokey doll but it also resembles the comedy/drama masks?? and it looks for like the drama one which is *chefs kiss*. also not about the costuming but when he said “what do you want steph?” I ACTUALLY STARTED SCREAMING THIS SHOW IS SO GOOD
blinky- obviously there’s the hoodie with little patch of magenta fur which i adore. but the sunglasses!! the way they both cover AND accentuate the eyes??? it is a look and blinky is serving.
nibbly- how i be looking with he/him in my bio. lmao but honestly i just really like how they used the visor and lipstick to draw focus to the mouth, cause obviously you can’t make someone into a giant mouth (probably). and of course the giant lollipop also make you think of a mouth
tinky- tbh i don’t have too much to say about tinky. i like the fur and the hairstyle, very goat-like. the goggles also make me think of horns, but idk if that was intentional
wiggly- oh. my. god. june saito (the costume designer) ABSOLUTELY understood the assignment. the wiggly backpack? the hair?? the spots on the jacket that are based off of the spots on doll wiggly’s face??? ofc we gotta talk about the crown too- even in human form wiggly can’t help but remind us who’s in charge. also once again not sure if this was intentional but something about max thinking he’s basically god and he’s wearing his letterman jacket all the time… and then human wiggly wearing a letterman jacket… idk there’s just something about it
also i know many people have talked about this but i ADORE how the lords in black are very neon and campy compared to the other characters. it’s a very jarring experience /pos. it also reminds me of like frogs or bugs being bright colors to signal that they’re poisonous. overall the costumes slayed and i love them sm
