It's a Welsh breed! Pair of breeds, actually - the little cute one from Pembrokeshire that looks like it belongs on a twee greetings card with a duckling on its head, and the big Carmarthenshire one that looks like it is straining every second of every day not to hunt down a cow and slaughter it. Funnily enough, America has gone feral for corgis, but here in Wales you don't often see pet ones. They don't have the temperament for pet life. I assume it's maybe a working-line Vs pet-line thing, but here their reputation is that they are snappy and aggressive if they aren't very, very carefully raised and handled.

The correct plural is corgwn, btw. Enjoy this knowledge.

Other Welsh breeds with Welsh names:

Llamgi Cymreig - the Welsh springer spaniel. 'Spaniel' is actually Sbaengi, meaning 'Spain dog', so cognate with the English, but llamgi is 'jumping/springing dog'.

Daeargi Cymreig - the Welsh terrier. Daeargi means 'earth dog', because of the traditional chasing things into setts and warrens thing. The Sealyham terrier is daeargi Sealyham, so same thing

And, Ci Defaid Cymreig - the Welsh sheepdog, pretty literal

And then non-Welsh breeds are varyingly named along similar lines. Sbaengi adara - the cocker spaniel (lit 'bird Spain dog'). Sbaengi hela - the English Springer (lit 'hunting Spain dog'). Sbaengi Siarl - the King Charles spaniel (lit 'Charles' Spain dog')

Ci defaid is generically used for collie or sheepdog.

Terriers there are many! I pulled these off of Bruce:

Black-&-tan terrier - daeargi melyn a du (yellow and black earth dog)

Bull-terrier - daeargi tarw

Cairn terrier - daeargi byrgoes (shortleg earth dog)

Fox terrier is fun, it gets DIALECTS. Daeargi/ci codi llwynog (fox-raising earth dog/dog) in the North, ci codi cadno (fox-raising dog) in the South

Irish terrier - daeargi Gwyddelig

Maltese terrier - daeargi Melita

Scotch terrier - daeargi Albanaidd/Sgotaidd

Skye terrier - daeargi Heledd (who is Heledd???)

Toy terrier - corddaeargim (dwarf earth dog! The 'cor' is the same as in corgi)

Yorkshire terrier - daeargi Efrog (York earth dog)

Let's see, what else... Um, adargi is 'retriever' - bird dog, literally. Golden retriever is adargi melyn (yellow bird dog)

Poodle is just pwdl. Cymricised transliteration, innit

And that’s why I’m just going along with that girl from ABBA [Agnetha Faltskog] who chat-show people criticize for being off on an island these days and out of touch with the music business. One fellow on television actually said, 'She had a beautiful ass but now she is an ass!' It was so nasty, can you believe it? But she’s probably much more spiritual, much more content, and just a better person to her family and friends. Did you see that movie made for Handmade Films called 'How To Get Ahead In Advertising'? It was written and directed by Bruce Robinson, who hated the Thatcherism going on at the time he made the picture. It’s about this bloke in this advertising agency who’s under heavy stress to have this campaign for pimple lotion done by Monday. He ends up getting a big boil on his neck and the boil gets bigger and bigger, and it manifests into this face. One day he looks in the mirror and says, 'The bastard looks just like me!' He’s getting sick of the lies and the bullshit of this industry, saying, 'They won’t be happy until every fucking one of us is crouching in some hatchback on a motorway,' and he’s trying to withdraw from it. But the boil, this head is his bad side, and it’s taking over. He goes into the hospital, and they lance the real head, and it’s the boil side that comes back to work! Lenny gets selected for the Kennedy Center Honors

“Ladies and Gentlemen…Midge Maisel!”

The music swells and Midge smiles widely as she steps out onto the stage at the Kennedy Center, looking out at the crowd.

“Good evening, everyone,” she says. “For the little kids in the crowd, my name is Midge Maisel - or that dirty lady comic whose records your parents wouldn’t let you listen to. And I am, in fact, Mrs. Lenny Bruce. Normally, as the spouse of an honoree, I’d be sitting behind him right now, but I’m too much of a troublemaker, and Joann Woodward was concerned about my proximity to Paul Newman. So instead, I’ll be your MC to honor my husband.”

“I met Lenny in the back of a squad car on the way to jail. He got arrested a lot in those days. The cops and the government really had it out for him, because he was saying the things no one was saying in public. He was talking about interratial coupling, and religion and the half truths our newspapers would tell us. He talked about social problems. Racism. All the things that exist in the world that are broken. He pissed off a lot of people. They called him a ‘sick comedian’ for saying the things that made people uncomfortable, and being the first to do it on a stage in front of a room full of strangers. But in a way, he was predicting the future of entertainment. These days you can’t get away from talk of sex and violence and race and inequality and all the things that made the good people of America clutching their pearls back in the fifties and sixties. I couldn’t even say the word pregnant on stage at a club, and now Jerry Springer is shouting “YOU ARE NOT THE FATHER” every weekday afternoon on television”

She grins as people laugh.

“And without Lenny, we wouldn’t have any of it. Someone had to kick open the door. That was Lenny.” Midge gazes up at him, beaming proudly. “My life would be far, far worse without you, even if a good chunk of it has been spent in courtrooms and bailing you out of jail. And the world wouldn’t be the same without you. So without further ado, the whole sordid tale.”

The voiceover - Midge’s that she’d prerecorded for the show - sounds as the audience applauds, and images are played along with it, detailing Lenny’s childhood, early years and war service, into comedy, and writing. His arrests, convictions and appeals. The Broadway play he’d won a Tony for, the documentaries he’s produced.

After the short summing up of his life, comes the tribute. An array of comics come out, dressed in their best mock-ups of Lenny’s signature black suit and tie. Steve Martin sings All Alone. Whoopi Goldberg does the differences between Jewish and Goyish. Robin Williams comes out and does the Christ and Moses bit.

When Eddie Murphy comes out with the drumset, Midge rushes onto the stage (as planned). “Eddie, Eddie, Eddie, we can’t do this bit, it’s being televised!”

“What?!”

“It’s still too dirty for television,” Midge explains. “We can’t do it. The president of the United States is sitting right up there, he’ll have a stroke and die.”

Eddie still looks bewildered. He’s great. “Why the hell,” he says loudly. “Did Lenny Bruce get picked for the Kennedy Center honors under a Republican President?!”

“I think they’re worried he’ll die soon,” Midge says factually.

Eddie still looks confused. “Lenny or the President?”

In the box, Lenny is laughing with his face in his hands.

“Take your pick.”

The audience laughs.

“I’m really sorry,” Midge says apologetically. “We just cannot air To is a Preposition, Come is a Verb.”

Eddie grumbles to himself, throwing down the drumsticks. “I practiced and everything damn standards and practices this is bullshit, whatever, fine.”

The audience keeps laughing and Midge turns back to the audience as Eddie storms offstage. “Sorry about that, folks. Just a…a little miscommunication.” She looks around, miming nerves, before she takes the microphone. “Let’s see, let’s see, what do I- Oh! So in the fifties, my first husband took me on a date to see Lenny at a strip club and he did this!”

And she starts the airplane glue bit. Once she’s done, and the audience is in stitches. Once she’s done, everyone comes back out on stage to thunderous applause, and they all gesture towards Lenny, as the audience stands to applaud him.

Lenny, for his part, shakes his head, a hand over his mouth as Kitty’s arms wrap around him from behind him.

Bruce Springer runs the Sylvanian Cricket Club and is also the captain of the team. Depending on which team wins the toss of the coin he either opens the batting or begins the bowling. His finest hour - and it did only take an hour - was when he bowled out the entire second eleven for only twelve runs and then opened the batting for his team and hit each of the first three balls for six. What a win!

Shelia Springer is a great all round sportswoman and is especially good at netball. She is often found at the netball courts either playing her favourite position of goal defence (GD) or coaching one of the junior teams. She works hard at all her sports, encouraging her children to do the same.Winning is not everything, beating your PB (Personal Best) is! she claims.

Joanne Springer, like the rest of her family, is sports mad. Her favourite activity is running; to be precise, long distance running. She trains very hard at this, getting up at six clock every morning in order to run around the fields, having a quick shower before she dashes off to catch the school bus.

Baby Joey Springer loves to play bat and ball with his father, Bruce. He usually misses the ball with the bat, which makes both him and his daddy laugh.
