reading for fun
reading is such a wonderful way to escape into different worlds, learn new things, and relax, but sometimes it can feel like a chore. here are some tips to help you rediscover the joy of reading:
Tumblr media
find what interests you: start by exploring genres, authors, and topics that genuinely pique your interest. whether it's mystery, romance, fantasy, or non-fiction, there's something out there for everyone. don't be afraid to try new things and see what resonates with you.
set aside dedicated time: carve out time in your day specifically for reading, whether it's in the morning with a cup of coffee, during your lunch break, or before bed. by making it a regular part of your routine, you'll be more likely to stick with it and enjoy the process.
create a cozy reading nook: find a comfortable spot where you can curl up with a good book and immerse yourself in the story. add some soft blankets, fluffy pillows, and ambient lighting to create a cozy atmosphere that invites relaxation and focus.
ditch the guilt: let go of any pressure to read certain books or meet arbitrary reading goals. reading should be a source of pleasure, not stress. give yourself permission to read at your own pace and savor each page without worrying about finishing quickly or keeping up with others.
join a book club or reading community: connecting with others who share your love of reading can be incredibly motivating and enriching. join a book club, participate in online forums, or follow bookish accounts on social media to discover new recommendations, discuss your favorite books, and connect with fellow bookworms.
mix it up: don't feel like you have to stick to traditional novels or lengthy tomes. explore different formats, such as short stories, graphic novels, poetry collections, or audiobooks. variety is the spice of life, and experimenting with different formats can keep things fresh and exciting.
embrace the power of rereading: revisiting old favorites can be just as rewarding as discovering new ones. reread beloved books from your childhood or revisit classics that have stood the test of time. you may be surprised by how much you enjoy rediscovering familiar stories and characters.
remember, reading is all about pleasure and personal enrichment, so don't stress about meeting quotas or reading the "right" books. focus on finding joy in the process and allowing yourself to get lost in the wonderful world of words. happy reading!

What I Didn't See and Other Stories by Karen Joy Fowler was a solid short story collection with a few excellent gems.
In "The Last Worders," two twin sisters are invited to a poetry slam that's "to the death," and are trying to decide who gets to date a boy that they both want. "The Mariana Islands" is a nostalgic family story with a faint mood of the absurd, with a hippie grandmother and an inherited homemade submarine. And "Halfway People" is a really lovely, pretty retelling of the fairy tale about the brothers who turn into swans.
I didn't expect a few things about this collection, but the main one was that there would be not one, but two stories about John Wilkes Booth—in one, his brother, also an actor and one of the best Hamlets ever performed, deals with the consequences of his brother's actions; in another, it's a young girl has a big crush but has no idea what Booth, or her mother, are involved in.
Overall, I enjoyed this collection. It had a lot of unexpected turns and tales. Most of the stories were good, and one or two were really excellent. Fowler is a writer I've enjoyed in the past, and I hope to read more of her in the future as well.
Content warnings for psychological torture, domestic abuse, violence, claustrophobia, n-word, animal cruelty/death.

My ranking of agggtm books from least favourite to favourite
WARNING!! SPOILERS!!
#4 - Kill Joy.
I still haven't finished this book tbf I'm only 75% through but I could live without finishing it. It's only a prequel but if you're looking to get into this series PLEASE READ AGGGTM FIRST 🙏 10x better. It's alright like a murder mystery party set in the 1920's so it's not as thrilling as an actual murder mystery, and idk I found myself skimming through the pages more than actually reading them so it all got so confusing, especially when Pip is revealing who the murder is, but then again that's probably just me. Cara is 100% the best character in this book.
#3 - Good girl, bad blood.
Ok this is the second book and its still good, just took me forever to finish. I was kinda ok by the child brunswick idea the first time round but then I thought about it and idk. it's so random in the last part of the book it's not like u could use any of the clues to predict fucking CHILD BRUNSWICK 😭 also I read a lot of reviews saying how Stanley forbes was like a racist in bk 1 but I didn't pay attention to him tbh soo I literally don't care he died xx
#2 - As good as dead.
Maybe just recency bias but I liked this book. I read a lot of reviews saying they didn't like how Pip killed him and yea its a bit random but it was an interesting twist. And I get its very very far fetched that they managed to actually pull all that off with literally no traces or evidence, and didn't Jason's wife see her going into the house that day? idkk and it's shitty Pip got her friends involved and cut off everyone in her whole life at the end but it was such an addicting read bc I've never read anything like it before! I love how it shows her like after the death of Stanley and all bc it like gives her a reason butt how was she like unfazed when Charlie got caught umm anyways ik it seems like I'm complaining abt this book but I was about to not get it im so glad I did. AND IM SO GLAD EVERYTHUNG COMES FULL CIRCLE like that was so well thought out.
#1 - A good girls guide to murder.
Obviouslyyy such a good book I'd reccomend this to anyone. Just when u think it's over there's another twist. I love pip sm in this book and ravii omg. Literally what else can I say abt this book the hype is so deserved!! BUT BARNEY DYING LITERALLY MADE ME CRYY WHYYY. I was looking back on my noyes and some of my suspicions were actually alright and max Hastings is a fugly bitch. I love how details from this bk are used in the 3rd like andies diaryy omg.
ANYWAYSS SORRY FOR THE BAD STRUCTURE 💋 I LOVE THESE BOOKS SM and I'm omw to finish the prequel.

I have a problem. I have a genuine problem. Okay so for Christmas, I got the 3 agggtms and the new heartstopper.
I've almost finished all of them (Heartstopper and the first two agggtms), so I bought 5 books from Amazon (One of us is lying trilogy, Killjoy & 5 survive).
I went shopping with my friend today and tell me HOW THE FUCK I left with 6 new books? The first 5 Shatter Me's and They both die at the end? I now only have like 10 pounds in cash.
ELEVEN BOOKS IN UNDER A WEEK? WHAT THE FUCK?!

A friend asked if I have ever wanted to become a writer. I said I did. When I was me, an uncorrupted, all-believing, naive ol' me. The me who wanted to express everything I've felt. From joy to love. From sorrow to pain. Everything. And I did. I did write. Before I had my first heartbreak. A wall around my heart put a block on my writing. More than a decade later, after so many torn single-word and single-sentence pages, I think I have finally found a place to call my own to express myself. No, it's not a person. It's just an online platform. As heartbreaking as it sounds, random people will read about my joy, sorrow, love and pain but not the people who truly matter.

Hey, it's the Vladimir Tod anon! The fandom is so small and if you don't write for it, that's fine, but I am seriously craving some tickle fics, especially that of the uncle-nephew kind (aka Otis tickling the crap out of Vlad), especially since there's so many moments for it: revenge for the attitude Vlad gave him in the first book, ESPECIALLY in the fourth book when Otis is like "I can think of many other ways to do you in", (or even Vikas the family friend training Vlad to fight)!! You can disregard my other ask if you'd like!
Friend, you don't even realize the absolute GIFT you just dropped into my inbox. Vladimir Tod is such a comfort character for me- younger Squiggily is soaring right now at the chance to write for him! :D Consider your request accepted!
I'm glad you sent this one- I was just about to screenshot it and flail around ajajekrajkerkja
General announcement: Since we're on the topic of books (and I've been rereading/discovering new faves lately), I wanted to include some new book fandoms in my blog- something more then just Heartstopper, you know? I'm gonna list a few books/series I'm willing to give a shot at for writing tickle content below- if anyone is interested in a fic for them or even has some recommendations, please feel free to send in an ask! If I've read the book I can most certainly try :D (No HP though)
**: Vague memory- might have to reread
The Chronicles Of Vladimir Tod
Six Of Crows/The Grishaverse (Still reading KOS)
Red Queen Series
Song Of Achilles**
The Mortal Instruments/Shadowverse (Have not read beyond The Dark Artifices- working on that...eventually)
Royal Bastards (Only read the first book oop-)
Hearstopper
The Cruel Prince** (Read the first book- need to read the rest of the series)
Simonverse (Love Simon, Leah On The OffBeat, etc.)**
An Ember In The Ashes series
The Raven Cycle** (Read the first book- rereading and planning on continuing it soon)
Throne of Glass**
A Court Of Thorns and Roses**
Curseworkers (I highly doubt anyone has read these but if you have I am in love with you (platonically))
Those are the books that immediately come to mind; again- if anyone has any recommendations or wants any requests/HCs for these, please feel free to send them in! :D Gentle reminder that requests are still open and will be closed November 1st.
Thanks for asking! :D

📖 The Woman Who Fell From the Sky: Poems by Joy Harjo
Giving Joy Harjo the respect she deserves as Poet Laureate, I finally got one of her books from the wonderful Birchbark Books and Native Arts. This collection is filled with poetic stories filled with cultural significance and beauty. Harjo is part of the Muscagee Nation and writes firmly about her experiences, but also brings in stories and traditions from friends in other tribes in North America.
It’s hard to choose a favorite poem, so I’ll choose two:
The first one is “Who Invented Death and Crows and is There Anything We Can Do to Calm the Noisy Clatter of Destruction?”
I liked this one so much that I didn’t underline/highlight anything because every word was powerful. As many can relate, the poem starts simply: “What a hard year.”
My second favorite would be “Fishing”. After each poem/story Harjo has an explanation of why she wrote it or her inspiration for writing. The explanation for this poem, wanting to go fishing with a friend, then finding out he passed, is very personal.
My late grandfather loved fishing. It was one of the many things we had in common and one of our last conversations was about fishing and which lakes and lures he liked best. So this poem, “Fishing”, really resonated with me and the explanatory note touched my heart.
