when i said that mha ripped off naruto (which i said only to piss off mha stans anyway) I didn't mean to sound like i was praising naruto. it was actually more like a sigh of disappointment, a reaction to seeing that all the problems that naruto had as a show transpired trough mha too and i was tired because watching naruto was enough for me but then i realized that my problem actually is that i can no longer stand watching shonen anime and i chose not to tire myself by cringing at the repetitive tropes and cliches anymore
#demon slayer falls under the same category sadly#actually it was more a combination of these 2 that made me realize that i had enough of this genre#me judging other shonen having as reference only naruto#but look! i watched both mha and demon slayer and my personal point was proven that i would get bored by them#(with the exception of some rare moments that were really good in mha but the bad and cringe moments made me forget abt them)#like i remember crying bcs this dude who trained deku died but then i remembered that a few episodes earlier he ''punished''#one of his female students by tying her up a ledge and tickling her with a feather :|#LIKE WHY DID YOU NEED TO PUT THAT IN THE STORY? HORIKOSHI OR WHATEVER THE MANGAKA'S NAME IS#WHY YOU FELT THE NEED TO ADD THAT IN???#and then you tried to make me feel sorry for the guy too?#that was such a jiraya death moment like they were playing it a sad but all i could think abt was ''rip bozo''#not saying that other anime don't have cringe moments. even moments that i had to skip because of how gruesome they were#but they sorta make sense in the big picture of the story? but other characters experience it too not just a category of people? idk#also it's funny how pissed mha stans get for having their show insulted like#when i tell ppl that my fave anime/manga are evangelion; black lagoon#and berserk they look at me like i deserve to be put in an electric chair#like they are right but at the same time i find it funny and i rly don't care#but these guys always go bananas if you insult their fav show as if you broke the geneva convention#i'd say that it's because the majority of the fans are children but i know for a fact that they are not 😭

If there's any two constants i can rely on no matter the manga, it's ladies with huge tits, and racist caricatures so blatant they may as well change every line of dialogue to the n word.

Children's media can absolutely and does radicalize kids when written correctly,it's just that shitty bigoted adults in fandoms deliberately misenterpret their messages and trick them into believing they're canon and that's how we got here.Bleach had Ichigo be a goth punk dude who's a fantastic older brother and choose his female love interest because she's his best friend and he finds her weirdgirlness to be enchanting which is good rep for us because being punk is about nonconformity and so is the fact that he never joined the military system his species was largely a part of because he didn't give two shits about them but over half the fandom is convinced the mangaka is a 'sellout' and 'pandering' for not making him essentially a paranormal cop for the sake of pairing him up with the fem mc that he has a familial and queerplatonic relathionship with as confirmed by the aformentioned mangaka
Pjo had Percy hate the gods as much as Luke does and act on it too but directly TO them instead of grooming younger halfbloods to work for him as soldiers and in fact he basically adopted every one of them he came across as his siblings and pseudo-kids and this is explicitly framed as why he's a hero and Luke's evil but you see nonstop erasure of his anti-corruption and anti-authority mentality and direct action despite being his core character traits to make him more palpable as an 'average fantasy protagonist' when the point of him is that he's not normal in any way
The Owl House had 3/5 of it's mcs be poc with the two white ones being an autistic and ocd lesbian and the other a disabled boy with zero conventionally physical traits that're never made out to be ugly and the protag is an inmigrant afrolatina girl while the big villain is a puritan colonizer and every single ship on the show is queer including the m/f one and the token white boy has almost all the important characters to his arc being black and the only one who isn't is a fat asian girl who's also disabled but the HUGE amount of positive rep in the show is deliberately taken out of context for bad faith critisism by a bunch of 20/30/even 40 year olds who've never written actual good stories themselves and this includes them adoring and gushing over the colonizer guy while dismissing the poc and women in the cast as irrelevant
Across the Spiderverse had an EXTREMELY black in every way character literally named SpiderPUNK who makes his beliefs clear in every single one of his lines and isn't all talk for a single second but he's reduced down to 'annoying edgy older brother figure' and made to listen to Taylor Swift and go to Hot Topic and called 'obviously a skater boy' and every other poser punk trope in the books
Atla had Aang and Katara be a gnc boy of a lesser known type of asian race and Katara a brownskin native girl that reclaims femininity for herself with their character drives being to save the world with Zuko's arc hammering it in again and again that while he always had good in him,he WAS evil,he DOES have a lot of bad traits and that made him do a lot of bad things and THAT'S why he needed a redemption arc to be a hero but Aang gets called racist for following the buddhist belief that in-universe he was sole remaining follower of that killing humans is bad,Katara gets adultified and stripped of her actual personality to make her just 'hashtag relatable teen gurl' and Zuko gets infantalized and upholded as the least problematic character in the whole show
And my last and not quite like the rest example is Harry Potter, including the spinoffs and fanon.Everything in it is neoliberal bs and the fandom just made it worse-Oh,the house that's a metaphor for fascism and white supremacy legacies? They're just misunderstood little babies and every minority-coded🥺The lower class family who canonically were Jkr's best attempt at good people that still flopped?Awful homophobic bastards😡All the female characters?Perfect slay 'You can't sit with us' girlboss, precious little baby angel who can't tie her shoes without her reverse harem's help or manipulative self-obsessed hyperfemme pick me,those are the only three categories they can ever fall in.Marauder's Era not only existing but being very,VERY popular is nothing but whiteness-What is there for you to be attached to there exactly? With the canon cast i can least see why you'd have nostalgia but M Era is literally nothing. You just CHOOSE to pick a franchise that's violently bigoted towards basically everyone and who's creator actively influences and helps caused that hurt irl oppressed groups instead of making ocs since you're already building them from scratch anyway
It's not the fault of actual good creators and especially not kids in fandom that grown ass bootlickers couldn't accept that their precious 'escapist comfort media' isn't apolitical at all instead of absorving it's messages like they should have since they have no care for other people despite insisting how kind and unproblematic they are

What is happening in the Twst Manga: Episode of Savanaclaw?
Q: Who is the new Yuu and how did they retcon the story to make a new protagonist make sense?
A: The new protagonist is Hirasaka Yuuka. Whereas the previous protagonist, Yuuken, was a Japanese high school student who did kendo, she is a Japanese all-girls high school student who does judo.
She chases an abandoned cat that she was trying to help into a street and wakes up in Twisted Wonderland.
(When the cat runs into the street we see a car coming, but when Yuuka goes after it, it becomes the black carriage that goes to Twisted Wonderland, insinuating that Yuuken might have been hit by a vehicle when crossing the street as well though we never saw the vehicle in question.)
Like Yuuken, Yuuka also wakes up in a coffin that leads her to the Hall of Mirrors during the opening ceremonies. Yuuka explains in narration that she was given permission to live in Ramshackle Dorm with Grim, just like Yuuken had been, and she also experienced the Heartslabyul incident and Riddle’s overblot, off screen.
Q: So what happened to Yuuken?
A: There is no mention of him having ever existed, so this seems like an alternate timeline?
Q: Is Yuuka hiding the fact that she’s female so she can be half a student with Grim in the all-boys school?
A: It’s not specified! Grim probably knows she is female, but there is never―at any point―any mention, whatsoever, of what her gender is or isn’t. Given Leona’s canonical “Women need to be properly respected” mindset from the game it is likely to factor in later on, but as of the first chapter there is no reference to anyone's gender at all :>
Also, the mangaka has changed from Kowono Sumire to Oda Suzuka  (Toboso Yana explains in this tweet that she participated in the drafting and character design herself)
Tumblr media
Q: Why did they change artists?
A: We don’t know! But this is a pattern with Twst, first with the publishing of the Art Gallery book (Twst art by various illustrators) and then the anthology books (short comics by different illustrators), so this just seems to be their thing, possibly as a compromise as it would probably be very difficult for Toboso Yana to do the entire Twst manga while also doing all of Twst ,plus her own series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Q: So will they change mangaka with every new arc?
A: We don’t know! We will have to wait and see :>

People really trying to refute one of my examples of fatphobia in Dunmeshi that was a fat character's weight being very rudely insulted (plus that fat character being portrayed as greedy, gluttonous, and incompetent) and there being zero examples of any fat characters being complimented on their weight to counterbalance the insult by pointing at Chilchuck complimenting Senshi or Laios complimenting Zon's wives (which is from a fucking extra) which doesn't fucking work as examples.
Those don't work b/c:
Chilchuck complimented Senshi on his masculine looks not his weight.
Laios complimented Zon's wives on their well-structured faces, nice racks, and round butts. Not their weight.
Furthermore, the mangaka didn't go out of her way in the art books to specifically point out that in spite of their looks the orcs and dwarves are not actually fat. They're *litterally* just big boned with a diagram and everything and notes that they have low body fat percentages for their visible size.
Instead of lying to people that Dungeon Meshi isn't fatphobic and trying to gaslight the fat fans pointing out that it is, don't do that shit.

Like, our major dwarf characters aren't fat. They aren't. They're just dwarves. Not even fat for dwarves. (Didn't grab a pic of tallman!Senshi b/c beard obscures his neck.)

Controversial take, but after thinking about it,I genuinely believe a lot Shonen mangas have great women. Starting with all the Shonen written by women, they all are great! But also have a cursed with anime adaptations that are incomplete or bad/a reboot can help (except for two);here is the list:
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Kimetsu no Yaiba
D.Gray-man
Magi
Ao No Exorcist
Noragami
Pandora Hearts/Vanitas No Carte
Jibaku Shonen Hanako-kun
Kuroshitsuji
Inuyasha
And the men mangakas can do it too!
Gintama
Hunter X Hunter/Yu Yu Hakusho
Mob Psycho 100
Shingeki No Kyojin
Tokyo Revengers
Chainsaw man
Yakusoku No Neverland
Spy x Family
Black Clover
Those are 21 mangas. Then there are others that their female characters are more of a hit or miss like:
Jujutsu Kaisen
Boku No Hero Academia
One Piece
Bleach
Jojos
The problem ,I think,is Naruto. Naruto has such a big impact on pop culture and Shonen that it is the first one that comes to mind of most people when one thinks of Shonen. And yeah, sadly women in Naruto suck,so the general impression is that most Shonen have terrible women. And there are, but I think there have always been great mangakas who know and care about writing women properly, and lately it is getting better and better

"The usual critics I've seen who've come down so much harder on shows like cw Supergirl are suddenly so forgiving of MAWS."
Not the other anon but is it because the main character is a guy or at least passes for a white man? That seems to be a trend I've noticed. People around me keep insisting it's not a thing but it happens every time there's a show/film made for girls or women. It feels like pandering and talking down to the audience in a "here, now get off our freaking backs about a film for you so we can get back to the real stuff" and then surprise surprise if there's harsh words about it suddenly "oh we won't be making another one since no one liked it" "but we di-" "NO ONE LIKED IT".
There's definitely a double standard happening for shows with female leads compared to shows with male leads. I distinctly remember the gross sexist response to the premiere of Supergirl and people comparing it unfavorably to a rom com (what's wrong with a superhero rom com?? That sounds great?) and then suddenly when it's MAWS people are celebrating the MAWS crew flexing how they get to draw Clark getting a magical girl transformation and getting to draw "shojo mangaka" Clois moments.
Supergirl wasn't perfect by any means, and critics were rightfully critical of things like Black Jimmy Olsen being sidelined- but then those same critics are totally fine with Black Jimmy Olsen getting sidelined even more so in MAWS? Like geez at least be honest about lowering your standards! It's a mix of that and Superman fans at large being burnt out over Snyderverse so they'll settle with MAWS.

This seems false, what do you think about it?
I find it highly unlikely. Unless someone gives me a legit link to it, I wouldn't consider it. Lots of fake interviews of Kishi are doing rounds in this fandom. And Kishi would never say something like this given how he has treated Sakura's character for 700 chapters and beyond. This part is from his 2010 interview (at Jump Fiesta Tokyo-Japan) :
Tumblr media
When the interviewer asked Kishi about Sakura, and called her a detestable girl (most people can see how Sakura's character is written as a detestable character, can't speak for delusional people), Kishi replied in a very convenient manner - "Realistic girls are like that..."
Lol. Once he calls his character realistic, what can one say? Realistic characters are never black and white, they stand in the grey area. So you can get away by saying - "Oh, she is realistic", without expanding on it.
Shounen characters are generally larger than life type characters to create a large impact since they serve a pedagogic purpose for its target group. People who are from the good guys camp, are generally taken as good, people who are from the bad guys camp are generally perceived as bad. So of course it would confuse people when Sakura is from the good guys camp but acts like a total douchebag. And naturally they would ask questions about it. But Kishi totally avoided to take the more controversial position by saying - she is realistic.
We know Sakura's character can be realistic, many women are the way she is. But is she a good role model for women of any place at any time? No. She doesn't really serve the pedagogic purpose other characters do. She is a negative person, selfish and immature. We know that. But Kishi cannot say it explicitly in his interviews because it would lead to all the other kinds of controversial questions, and would potentially open a can of worms for him. First question would be - If she is from the good guys camp and remains till the end, why did you write her as negative, even after she got so popular? You could have used her character's popularity with the girls to say something inspiring, something kind. So why didn't you? Any other writer would have jumped at the chance. Writers are supposed to work off the popularity of characters in a medium such as commercial serialilized manga.
Kishi kept writing her as detestable. If he could, he would have told them - I wrote her that way because I needed plot device for Naruto and Sasuke's romance which I was writing in the disguise of ninja manga. Team seven is about S and N. It's a love story about them and Sakura doesn't figure anywhere in their relationship and I want to make it clear by showing why.
And I have a feeling quite a lot of Sakura's characterisation comes from his personal experience of women. Of course he couldn't say all that. But he can be indirect about it. Although when you are indirect about something so many times, with context it becomes quite direct. Hehehe
Just look how Gege responded when he was asked a difficult question from Kubo. Female characters are not given much weight in shounen given its target audience. Most female characters in shounen aren't even given half the character development male characters get. And look at Japanese society, it's so patriarchal, who's surprised their representation of female characters is so backward? I doubt most of these mangakas get out very much, to actually put some effort in knowing how women act and why.
Look at Kubo's interview with Gege. Gege's female characters are kickass, as strong as men, as smart and well developed. They have agency, self worth and esteem. Their characters don't revolve around male characters. But female characters like these are beyond Kubo's imagination lol. Look at the female characters in Bleach hahaha. So this is what he asked Gege.
Tumblr media
Kubo finds Jjk women formidable because he cannot even fathom independent women, women who don't depend on men for everything. Lol. They can walk shoulder to shoulder with men, they aren't less than men, like they are in most shounen. But of course, Gege cannot tell Kubo these things. Hehe. Kubo is his senior, and the Japanese have a whole set of etiquette on how to behave with one's senpai. Gege won't say anything even remotely offensive to Kubo, so the best way to deal with such things is to be vague and use self deprecating humor, so as to not appear confrontational, it's a communication tactic. I also use these kinds of tactics when talking to difficult people or people in high positions I don't agree with. I have interviewed hundreds of people in my work. So I understand that one needs to be subtle even in their disagreements.
In Shippuden, later on, Sakura was written with heroine like qualities. So what this means is that Kishi doesn't have a very good opinion on either women or women in shounen. She does get some footage in the manga, where other characters praise her skills, like one would expect a heroine to get. She confesses to Sasuke and Naruto both. Never mind the rejection from both. But it's clear that Kishi would never have made Naruto end up with Sakura who treated Naruto this badly. Kishi is not a fool. He plainly says that she comes off as detestable because that's how she was written. Lol.
Lots of rumours have been doing rounds about Naruto's remake or live action film etc. but as far as I know, nothing such has actually materialised. So I wouldn't worry about it either.
I think it's high time that SS, NH and NrSk accept the reality and move on. It's been years. Sasuke is gay. Naruto is gay. Was established as closeted gay in both parts one and two. He would not suddenly defy his character traits and become straight just because NrSk can't keep it in their pants. So pathetic tch. Guys, there is nothing for you in Naruto except heartbreak. Grow up and move on.
SNS at least have legit reason to still be hopeful. The het shippers have nada. Zilch. Zero. Hehe. But well, who can fight desperation? Not these peeps.

Damian The Mangaka
Word count: 5,855
Relationships: Jonathan Samuel Kent/Damian Wayne
Characters: Damian Wayne, Jonathan Samuel Kent, Lois Lane (briefly), Maya Ducard (Briefly)
Tags: I Was Sick When I Wrote This, Fluff, Getting Together, Coming Out, Manga & Anime, Middle School, damian is in 8th grade while jon is in 6th but they get together when jon is 14 and damian is 16, Birthday Party, Shopping Malls
Read on AO3
Excerpt under the cut.
It’s 6:30pm and Damian has already completed all of his school assignments as far ahead as his teachers would allow him to. He’s exercised in the morning and he will go on patrol tonight. He’s caught up on the anime list Jon recommended to him, and he’s read a great deal of Shoujo Manga in class after finishing his work. So Instead of doing any of those activities he might normally do to occupy his time, He goes to his drafting table and takes paper, his pens and ink and brushes and pencils, and a ruler, and starts making panel boxes.
His plan is this: He first draws the panels on the page, then he writes what happens in the panels on the page, then he draws the speech bubbles, then he draws the characters and backgrounds, inks, shades, expertly writes the text legibly, and scans it in.
First, though, he has to know what he’s going to write. He wants to write Shoujo, because it’s a great way to theorize about and study human behavior. Definitely not because it’s a nice daydream. Damian is confident that he is too mature for things like that. He turns on his phone and searches for common japanese names for his character. The female lead will be named Chiba Nakano and the male lead will be named Murata Haruto.
Nakano, the surname of a famous warrior. Her parents expected great things from her, and for her to perform their traditions with the greatest respect and diligence. She is well practiced in martial arts and ikebana. She makes ink paintings when she longs to feel free, like her own person.
Damian sketches out his design of the girl. She’s short, with sharp eyes that when resting look a bit bored, her mouth is naturally downturned at the corners. Her jaw is wide and her cheeks are chubby. She wears eyeshadow and lipstick and is beautiful. Her hair is cut short, similar to Damian’s, because he has the best reference for it and he is going to be drawing her a lot. She wears a school uniform and outside of class she wears skater skirts and baggy tops that drape over her shoulder. She acts brusque and pushes people away when they get close, but she gets the most angry when the people she likes don’t give her attention, so you can tell that she does care. She will make flower arrangements inspired by those she loves and gift them away. She likes animals and goes to the park every day to feed the ducks corn.
Haruto. A name that means light, sun, clear weather, and to fly or soar. A cheerful and sweet character like this should be perfect for slice of life. He should have messy black hair and glasses, be tall and the kohai of Nakano. He should have a dazzling smile. He’s so excitable that it scares most people off, but most are friendly towards him because he is friendly with everyone. They wind up in the same friend group and that is how they meet.

8-Man vs. Cyborg 009 - Volume 2
Love a good 2 volume, short read every now and then. Unlike BGOO Parts, this one didn't outstay its welcome. Nothing ground breaking here, just some crossover fanservice like in the Devilman crossover. Fun times. Interested to see what's next for these franchises.
Ch. 7
8-Man tells Joe and Francoise about his past romantic drama with his secretary Sachiko. Francoise apparently "saw" Sachiko's presence when they were in 8-Man's office and wanted the tea lol.
If they're not gonna let Francoise fight, like ever, can they please introduce another female fighter or something? I'm getting really fed up watching her smile blandly on the sidelines or be a damsel in distress. Like if she's a pacifist, fine! But she's also the only girl cyborg so it feels insulting.
The two page spread of the demon God statue was a good jump scare. Let the final showdown, begin!
Ch. 8
Lol I guess the manga heard my complaints because they finally let Francoise shoot a gun at least. Also, her heightened senses finally did something useful. Alright, fine. You win this time mangaka...
Wait, what the hell!? Pyunma's back to his old racist design! THIS MANGA CAME OUT IN 2020 WTF??? (Good thing I didn't pay for this one lol).
Honestly, it seems ridiculous that Skull would just ignore the other numbers cyborgs. There's no way they wouldn't come after their kidnapped friends...just makes him look really stupid.
The Black Ghost minions were drawn all cutesy in like a chibi form. They look like they could be villains from a Mario game or something lol. Not very intimidating.
Ch. 9
Yaaay 008 pointed out the 8 thing =D lol. Glad he gets to contribute to the battle even though there's no water around lol.
Francoise has a weird bonding moment with Dr. Daemon because he saw her in a ballet once. He's definitely the chiller of the two evils but he's still actively working towards world domination and perpetual wars? I don't think this is really a "there's good in him" moment...
8-man sure loses his arms a lot. Guess they're just trying to emphasize his mechanical body.
I swear they used the EXACT same tactic to topple the demon God statue that they used to topple the Atlas-type robots in BGOO Parts! (006 digs a hole and then 005 pushes the big enemy over). Felt weird to see that used back-to-back in manga published so close to one another. Both times they emphasized it as some kinda ingenious strategy.
Ch. 10
Awe, I really liked this finale. They wrapped everything up in a nice, neat bow and sometimes that's all you want.
So Dr. Daemon was actually playing the long game and never allied with Black Ghost at all! Rather convenient lol. Does they mean the gang wouldn't have been able to defeat both enemies at once?
I completely forgot about Joe's juvenile delinquent backstory. Why do I feel like that doesn't fit his character at all? He's such a bland do-gooder now...Anyway, having 8-Man explain that he was a cop on the scene at the time of Joe's escape attempt was a clever way to tie the two series worlds together in a believable way.
So I guess Dr. Daemon is still not a great guy but not that evil either? I don't know enough 8-Man lore to make a conclusion lol. He seemed pretty okay with the heroes dying earlier, so I guess he's just all for himself.
This chapter got all Ghost in the Shell-y with the reveal that Skull isn't a real person, just a robot with implanted memories. Pretty brutal that he decapitated his own lackeys to prove a point what the heck...what if they weren't robots!?
So Black Ghost is dead "for real" now...riiiight. Until they inevitably get resurrected again for some future manga.
I was kinda shook to find out that Joe's hair is a wig (or maybe it's actually implanted into his scalp? IDK). It doesn't actually make any difference, I just never realized that was the case.
Dr. Gilmore and Dr. Tani being science bros was cute. Also enjoyed seeing Ivan (and his one eye) very briefly.
Nice picturesque ending with Joe and Francoise dropping 8-Man off at Sachiko's house and validating his humanity. Wholesome cyborgs supporting cyborgs.
Omake - Duel
A closer look at some 8-Man/Dr. Tani lore. I kinda wish they didn't include this tbh because it ended this volume on a depressing note.
Damn, if I was Ken I'd probably resent my dad too! Ken was like "you only love 8-Man!" and Dr. Tani was like "that's not true!" but then the second Ken dies Dr. Tani's just like "meh, at least I have 8-Man" lol. Poor Ken!
Speaking of poor Ken...that's one severe widow's peak. On top of having a craptastic life, he's also balding? Oh the humanity!
Dr. Tani acted like Ken being a cyborg with a human brain was a revelation of some sort? Sooo...if Dr. Tani wasn't the one to turn Ken into a cyborg, who did?
Ken's hero suit (or villain suit, I guess) literally just looks like he sharpied some fake pecs on lol. What a weird design choice.
As far as 1960s manga go, I think I prefer Cyborg 009's art style because it's more over-exaggerated and stylized. I think this allows it to hold up more. 8-Man feels more traditionally drawn (more proportional characters).
I'm kinda glad I got a glimpse into the authentic, OG 8-Man for greater context, but I'll also probably just read this again someday if I ever get to that part of MAL haha.

🍐 and 🫐!
🍐 is there anything in canon that you absolutely hate and love to fix in fics? a wrong choice made, a fuck-up in characterization, a misunderstanding never cleared up, a conversation never shown onscreen, etc…
answer 1:
the last fandom i sat on the fringes of was star wars. as you may well be aware, its canon is an overcomplicated, top-heavy, redundant mess after the first three films, and george lucas spent way too much time no one asked for in 'fixing' what wasn't broke in the first place. i wasn't even aware of fandom as a community at the time, or in a good headspace to let myself play in that way. so it never occurred to me to patch any of those holes myself with writing or art. were i to travel back in time, i'd merge the prequels with my favorite bits from timothy zahn's heir to the empire trilogy (AKA the thrawn trilogy). i'd purge all the weird ethnic stereotypes like watto and jar jar. and i'd give anakin more meat on his bones as a character. as written, padme's sacrifice for him still makes no sense: i have no clue what she saw in him. as for mob psycho 100, the origin text of my current fandom? i don't find it lacking in any major way i want to fix, really. though i do wish it had more girls; ONE is quite good at writing them. (it is a shōnen series, after all... sidelining female characters seems like a contractual obligation when writing for that demographic /s). i'm a huge fan of the mangaka's approach to characterization in this particular story, too, and the ending is just so damned satisfying. actually no, i take that back. i'd either lose takeuchi or not make him a weird ethnic stereotype. little black sambo all grown up as an indian holy man in a sparkly gold robe? whyyyy. no, he doesn't read as 'black' to me just because he's dark-skinned. look at his hair. (by the way, the illustrations in 'little black sambo', whom he does appear to have been patterned after, are racist caricatures of southern indians that were eventually co-opted to ridicule dark-skinned peoples in general. it's still a beloved children's book in japan.) he's still offensive AF and largely forgettable on top of that. but the easiest fix is to treat him like he doesn't exist. he appears in exactly 4 fics on AO3, and is a POV character in only one of them. tldr: well-drawn characters are my lifeblood, so i tend not to fall hard for stories where i have major bones to pick with the character writing. mob psycho 100 is the first story i've loved deeply enough to write or draw for.
answer 2:
game of thrones deserved an actual ending; GRRM himself will die before he finishes its source material. don't hire me to write it. i will never have enough energy to fix that.
🫐 what’s your favorite underrated thing in your fandom? (a ship that only you seem to write for, a character there’s almost no fics about, a trope that criminally hasn’t been written yet, etc.)
relatively well-adjusted thirty-something kageyama shigeo poking his way around a mild existential crisis, whom i have attempted to write and draw, and shoumob, whom i haven't but absolutely adore @inkedberries' fanart for.

With the first episode of Bucket list of the dead, it is expected that one would think the anime is about the toxicity of Japanese worklife culture. And to an extent, the first episode very much is- we see Akira Tendo's gradual descent into an uncomfortable life working at a black company, which is a reality that Japanese OL workers know all too well. It's no secret that their work life, social hierarchies, and leisure time are tightly restricted. Employees usually need to hang out with each other after work to the extent that they are not seen as social outcasts or losers. They are also made to work excruciating overtime often falling asleep or even sleeping at the company. Many employees, even women, are sexually harassed by their bosses with nobody to report to. And last but not least, employees are verbally harassed and abused by their bosses resulting in a high turnover/suicide rate.
When I lived in Japan, I enjoyed riding the subway to and from school every day. I also found the gates in front of the train itself endearing, because I thought it was Japan's considerate way of keeping their elderly, children, and unfortunate out of danger. Based on what I read online, these gates are actually meant to prevent suicide. At first, I was shocked, because the gate was not that high and easy to jump over. So naturally, I questioned its effectiveness. While watching the anime I realized it does stop people- the tired, zombie-like workers who stumble to and from work every day. It's easy to break the monotony of your life with a simple 3 steps forward, but not with a jump and a hop.
The show definitely did have a message (or rather an attempt at a message)- You can do whatever you want, and you should not submit to authority just because they are there. Rather, you should find somebody you trust or work for yourself. At the end of episode 7, Shizuka tells Akira that the future is open to endless possibilities and you can 'be whoever you want to be'. Which I believe to be the general theme of the show, freedom of choice.
Now, onto what I didn't like.......
Fanservice I found it funny that Akira's first love was a woman who was sexually abused by her company because the show immediately turns around and sexualizes her during her death scene- which is kinda redundant, no? The framing of the scenes in which female characters exist is often sexualized as well. There is no reason to add SWEAT BEADS to Shizuka's chest when they cannot even get the shading on her Jacket correct. The image below was like an 8 second still. I seriously laughed. Also, so many sexualized female zombies?? Even in death, women can't catch a break from horny animators. One last note: You might be inclined to argue that just because you can see an exposed part of a woman's body, she is not sexualized. And that is true! However with the framing of the scene, overabundance of BRA shots(!??!) and comments made specifically about female's bodies.... it's easy to see that the mangaka dont gaf....

2. A whole lot of nothing
in the sense that the show tried very hard to shove the *point* down your throat instead of letting you analyze and find it out yourselves... It's clear the author wants you to experience freedom of choice for a better life, but we only really get that through endless monologuing and the "bad" characters doing things that scream GRAHHHH I'M SO BADDDD!!! GRAHH
3. High-Key Unrealistic
My suspension of disbelief was affected greatly by company meetings still going on OUTSIDE during an apocalypse, Shizuka's dad immediately putting down her dog for no other reason than being the "bad guy", and still having electricity during an apocalypse, etc.

So I have a new obsession idea!
Yona of the Dawn is an amazing read. (If you've never heard of it before) The anime unfortunately only has one season but the manga is absolutely worth it. The story is amazing and the romance will leave you kicking and giggling like a middle schooler. It's so good. The characters are also EXTREMELY well written and the mc is one of the best female protagonists to exist.
Also the guys are very nice to look at ;)

(The middle one actually has black hair, it's just the way the mangaka colored it and it's v pretty)
Never heard of it! I'm not one for romance stuff, I prefer shounen and seinen cause those characters usually fit my taste better, haha.
Though I must say I had enough tragedy for a while so I may check it out... thank you for the recommendation!

thoughts on soul eater manga so far after reading it for two nights at work (currently around the middle of after Arachnophobia reforming)
TL;DR: i might keep reading but i'm not sure (i'm getting burnt out from it 100%), but right now i'd say it holds up pretty well - and would recommend it if not for just how fucking frequent and insistent the creepy voyeur shit is. I get it dude. you think its funny and definitely not creepy to have jokes about dudes pulling up girl or female-presenting character skirts.
(full thoughts under the cut because i typed So fucking much):
really good story and fun dynamic and aesthetic that is hampered so fucking much by Classic Shitty Mangaka trappings ie girls getting their underwear exposed, obsession with girls that want to Get Married, women in skimpy outfits, the usual kinda shitty stuff.
Lots of great characters. Aside from the generic/stereotypical Bad quirks (Wants to get married, desperately wants to ask somebody out, Embarrassed because she's Not Sexy and Buxom), there's a lot of really fun personality in all of the characters.
It's actually a bit more of a comedy than i remembered. it's surprisingly pretty consistently funny
the story is oddly breakneck which is both a blessing and a curse. It's entirely possible it's because i was basically binging it, but as soon as medusa freed it feels like it hasn't let up. It's good because i feel like there's always something new or interesting, and Ohkubo (the mangaka) is great at drawing really impressive landmarks and setpieces, but it feels weird that the school basically turns into an afterthought
It's kinda surprising how so far both Crona and Death the Kid have their mental illnesses portrayed really respectfully. With kid it's always a bit of a joke, but his OCD feels very genuine in a way that goes beyond "haha every now and then he gets too upset because things aren't In Order", especially the bits where Liz and Patty have to basically keep him from spiraling into a depression because of it. Crona is obviously a knock-out-of-the-park, but I am amazed at how much focus is put on their issues with being raised in an abusive upbringing and trying to escape from it.
On the other hand - it feels like the characters that aren't Maka, Soul, and Black*Star don't get any character development, and it has the issue other popular shounen manga has where instead of trying to develop the already large cast more, Ohkubo keeps throwing more one-note characters in. It kinda works in his favor - Kilik especially kicks ass and I'm glad he becomes a Notable character - but it's easy to get tired of the same characters going through the motions
Mifune is easily the best character in the entire series so far, but Free is a blast and I enjoy him whenever i see him, especially his dopey werewolf form and whenever he chants "wolf wolves wolf wolves"
