In no particular order, here are my least favorite AtLA/LoK half-baked fan theories:
- The old lady who heals Korra after she washes up on the beach is actually Azula (she looks nothing like her wtf?).
- Sokka is Suyin’s father... no. Just no.
- P’Li / Ming Hua is Azula’s daughter.
- Asami is Azula’s granddaughter.
- Lin Beifong must be a lesbian (you know, because she can’t just be single and childless, there has to be a “reason” for it).
- Ty Lee being part Air Nomad.
- Autistic Zuko / Azula.
- “Azula has [insert heavily stigmatized mental disorder here] because I read a Web MD article about it.”
-  Ozai had Lu Ten killed.
- 8 year old Azula murdered Kya... somehow. (Yes, this is a real take).
- Azulon actually told Ozai to kill Azula, not Zuko.
- Azula “slept her way to the top”.
- Iroh is Azula / Zuko ’s biological father, not Ozai.
- Azula knew Aang was alive from the very beginning and purposely took Zuko home with her so that she could set him up to be the fall guy (in which case, why did the conversations in her bedroom and by the turtleduck pond even happen???).
I’m sure there’s more but these all came to mind lol

I'm thinking about why it looked like Zuko didn't have any friends growing up and why he either was with his mother or with his sister's friends, or even playing by himself.
I tried finding information on this, while Azula went to the Royal Fire Academy for Girls where she met Mai and Ty Lee, there's no information if there was a Royal Fire Academy for Boys, let alone if Zuko went.
But what if there was, but Zuko wasn't allowed to go or socialize with other kids as punishment by Ozai? Zuko was always berated and ridiculed by his father for lacking in his skills and training, so it could be that having time to play and socialize with kids was a reward for Azula for excelling and far exceeding her peers. He might have only gotten time to spend with Ursa, Iroh, Lu Ten, or Azula outside of studies and training at Ursa's insistence or Iroh taking Zuko away for tea when he could.
Ozai was totally ashamed of him the moment he was born, saying Zuko lacked the spark in his eyes that is common for firebended, so he could have also kept him locked up in the palace for fear that he would bring shame to the Royal family by not being a prodigy like Azula and making a fool of himself if he was in a more public area like a school. It would have been embarrassing for the prince to not be the top student.
(He's also definitely autistic and the few boys his age he would have tried to play with might have thought he was weird and avoided him on top of it all 😢)

Okay so has anyone done like a DinLuke Anastasia AU? Because honestly I was listening to the Anastasia Broadway soundtrack (again) instead of my usual DinLuke playlist and like all I can think is this au.
Like Padmé and Anakin are King and Queen of Naboo, with the royal twins Luke and Leia. Don’s parents are servants who moved to Naboo from Aq Ventina and got jobs in the palace. Din is like only a few years older than Luke in this as opposed to their cannon age gap. Because of this they often hang out (I doubt Padmé or Anakin would have issue with him being friends with the hired helps kid just given who they are) Luke is Din’s best friend, but Luke’s beat friend is forever and always his twin sister Leia, though Din is a close second. Both have a crush on each other, but neither voice it.
Then when Luke is eleven and Din is like fourteen, not quite a full on revolution but enough people are unhappy with things that a group of them Storm the palace and kill Anakin and Padmé. Leia escapes with Bail Organa and is adopted by him, but Luke isn’t as lucky. Din helps him into the servants quarters, but Luke drops the music box his mom had made when he and Leia were babies. Din goes back for it, but witnesses his parents being executed for refusing to give up the twins location causing him to black out and stay separated from Luke. Luke meanwhile escapes, but falls down a hill and hits his head losing his memories. The next day a kind old lady finds him and offers to help him find somewhere to stay.
“What’s your name child?”
“I think it’s Lu…. Lu… Luka?”
“Very well Luka, let’s find you somewhere warm for the night”
Fast forward ten years, things have gotten worse, Luke is struggling to find and keep a job, Din WAS a Mandalorian, but they aren’t very welcome around Naboo anymore after one of them was involved with the murder of the King and Queen and disappearance of the Prince. He has Grogu still, but he’s a human in this au because I say so. He’s mute and likely the Star Wars equivalent of a nonverbal autistic. Grogu doesn’t like the helmet much either, he doesn’t like not seeing his dad’s face, so the helmet (and the rest of the armor) goes.
Greef and Cara come up with the plan to fool Leia, who is offering a reward for anyone who can return her brother to her. (She knows he’s alive because she can sense him in the force) Din wants no part in it, but is struggling with money and affording to care for Grogu and the amount of money offered, even split between them, would be life changing. So he, reluctantly, goes along.
The group eventually meet Luke, hoping to get off world and find his family, and agree he looks just like the missing prince (no duh). Greef and Cara are elated that Luke has no memories and just wants to find his family meaning no extra split in the reward. Din on the other hand feels bad for taking advantage of someone who looks just like his best friend. Luke for his part, recognizes Din, but can’t figure out how he knows him, or how he knows his name.
The group begins making plans to leave Naboo. Din is left with Luke and Grogu. Luke asks Din if they could have met when they were kids because he feels like he’s met him before. Din confesses he was very close to the prince before he went missing and how he was his best friend. Luke asks if he believes he’s really the prince and Din admits he doesn’t know. He doesn’t want to believe his best friend would have forgotten him. Luke reminds him that he can’t remember anyone or anything from before he was eleven. (Cue in my dreams sequence) Luke accidentally floats some things making Din believe he might just be the prince. (Force users are rare and even rarer would be someone who looks so similar to Luke with force sensitivity)
After months of traveling via shuttles (no one has a ship) Din, feeling guilty eventually confesses everything to Luke, who he’s started falling in love with. Luke confronts Greef and Cara about using him to get a reward and trying to con someone who is just looking for her brother. Luke agrees to continue with them, but only to see if Leia is his sister and as he doesn’t trust Greef or Cara anymore he doesn’t want to see them afterwards. Din promises to help Luke find his family if Leia isn’t his sister and the two end up spending the night together.
Meanwhile Bail convinces Leia to give up the search, at least temporarily for her sake.
Stuff happens, Luke and Leia reunite, Luke gets his memory back, Din realizes Luka and Luke are the same person when talking with Luke results in him remembering the time Luke convinced his parents to let Din ride in the parade with them. Someone tries to kill Luke and Leia, Din stops them. Din and Luke get together, Luke adopts Grogu and the three decide to live a quiet life though Luke remains close to Leia.
I might have to write this actually.

okay you reblog a lot of albums ive never heard of and am curious about but it’s hard to get myself to sit down and listen to a whole album so please please, Top Ten-ish Songs To Get To Know You kind of list? pretty please?
i literally daydream about people asking me stuff like this LOL. so this is hardly a comprehensive list of all my favorite songs ever but here are some songs that are really important to me!!! this got REALLY long so i put it under a read more
1. meet me in the woods by lord huron
my absolute favorite song Ever like of all time. means everything to me. i could listen to this every single day and never get tired of it. INSANELY fun, incredible vibes, makes me want to go outside and shoot a beam into somebody. lord huron is an Experience. all their albums are concept albums and there’s actually a fair amount of lore going on. on the physical CD for strange trails it actually has the characters’ names next to their respective songs
Tumblr media
for meet me in the woods, it sounds very upbeat and happy, but listen closely and you’ll realize it’s not quite as it seems… in-universe, it’s narrated by a woman named francine lu, and the song has the same chords as the first track of the album (and another of her songs) “love like ghosts”. she also narrates “the night we met”, easily LH’s most famous song. francine lu is not having a normal one. what’s her problem? listen to find out…..
2. crystals by of monsters and men
this was my favorite song ever for about 6 years until meet me in the woods ranked just a tiny bit higher. sooo fucking fun, itches a part of my brain that’s only accessible via icelandic stomp & holler. makes me very happy and always cheers me up! of monsters and men was the first new (at the time) band i ever really discovered on my own without hearing about from my parents or other people, and i’ve been listening to them ever since (almost 13 years!!) they are incredibly important to me and i highly recommend all of their albums
3. sunblind by fleet foxes
relatively new but became a favorite as soon as i heard it. this is also one of the most Me songs i can think of on top of just being so fucking gorgeous and raw and heartfelt. this song is a tribute to deceased musicians who influenced robin pecknold (the lead singer and songwriter for fleet foxes) and how their music is pretty much the reason he’s even alive today. my favorite lines are “only way that i made it for a long time / but i’m loud and alive, singing you all night”. this entire album is sincerely a masterpiece and i highly recommend listening to it all. fleet foxes have really beautiful and unique lyrics, they remind me of mitski’s lyrics in that they’re very poetic and personal and emotional but still subjective enough that you can connect them to your own life
4. this must be the place by talking heads
specifically the stop making sense live recording, which i still half-refuse to believe is a live recording because it’s just THAT fucking good. whenever someone says david byrne can’t sing i direct them here, because he does sincerely have an incredible voice and he simply Chooses to sing weirdly bc he’s a quirked up white boy with autistic swag.
this is just a really sweet and romantic song from a band that otherwise stays far away from love songs and it works extremely well. this entire album is fucking incredible and easily the best live album of all time. half of them are BETTER than the studio recordings, and you can also watch david byrne leap straight up backwards like a full 4 feet
Tumblr media
highly recommend watching stop making sense just the entire film
5. vein of stars by the flaming lips
back in 2014, i watched a very beloved streamer play a game called “space engine”, in which you explore as much of the universe as we’ve theorized to exist. this was a little before copyright laws got so fucking strict on youtube and twitch, so mr. vinny vinesauce could play any music he wanted while planet-hopping. one of those songs was vein of stars, and it’s been one of my absolute favorites ever since.
the flaming lips are definitely an acquired taste. wayne coyne does Not have a very good voice and it can get extremely grating, especially to someone who hasn't heard them before. but when it works, god it works. this song is so pretty and nostalgic to me, always calms me down whenever i’m In A Mood. it’s nihilistic but not in a depressing way, more like “yeah maybe we aren’t here for any particular reason, maybe there’s nothing after this life. there’s nothing we can do about that, so why worry?”. very peaceful. REQUIRED listening when stargazing
6. good old-fashioned lover boy by queen
one of the first songs i ever truly hyperfixated on. unfortunately i listened to it SO fucking much it kind of ruined it for me, but i still do really love it. i may not listen to it that often anymore but i felt obligated to put it here bc it had a Profound Effect on my developing brain
7. too much time by john vanderslice
the year is 2012 and you're halfway through the newest episode of the hit podcast welcome to nightvale. cecil announces the weather. little do you know that you will carry the next 3 and a half minutes with you for the rest of your life. this one is just absurdly nostalgic to me (and not to mention incredibly vash the stampede coded). beloved song!!!
Tumblr media
8. waltz for zizi & the real folk blues by the seatbelts & mai yamane
well it’s no secret that i think cowboy bebop has the greatest anime soundtrack of all time and one of THE greatest soundtracks of all time Ever. this is just an objective fact actually.
i believe this is because the seatbelts and specifically the composer yoko kanno studied real jazz, blues, and bebop to make the ost. like it's not just "jazz-flavored", there is genuine, deep respect and you can hear it in every single track. waltz for zizi gives me physical goosebumps every single time i listen to it, it's absolutely perfect. i've made it a ritual to listen to every time i visit the shore at night and go stargazing. sincerely transcendent experience
9. cuckoo song by cosmo sheldrake
hhhhhrrr this entire fucking albummmm hhhhhhhrhhhhrhhhaauuuuUUUUOOOGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
back during my final semesters of college, i had to take a course for art degree seniors. we’d pick something we were passionate about, make art for it, and it would be hung up for a week in the exhibition room. i chose birds of course, but wake-up calls inspired me to shift that choice to something more important than just random funny bird drawings. i focused on bird species that have gone extinct within the last 60 years because wake-up calls is made almost entirely out of endangered bird songs.
i’ll be honest i can barely listen to this song or anything on the album because i WILL literally start sobbing like in real life. cuckoo song in particular just makes me start crying every single time i listen to it, it’s like a magic spell. it’s not even necessarily sad but just viscerally bittersweet. the art for the album is made by flora wallace. here’s the spotify canvas i made a gif just for you 👍
Tumblr media
10. take you back by orville peck
and finally………….. the song that made me realize that i actually DO love real country music a lot, and that the derivative “bro country” sub-genre that developed in the early 2000s has absolutely destroyed any positive opinion of country music in society. we NEED to go back, and orville peck is more than doing his part. this is the first song i ever heard by him and it's just so goddamn fun. i am completely unable to not sing along to this when it comes on
not only do i highly recommend orville peck but also any country music from the 50s and 60s, especially marty robbins, charley pride, conway twitty, and of course mrs. dolly parton. and later country rock/folk rock bands like america and creedence clearwater revival. it’s SO good i’m so serious
orville peck is the only modern country singer i can think of who's not afraid to bring back the harmonicas and whistling and steel guitars and whip cracks and yeehaws. it's fantastic. he's also gay and an outspoken trans ally. i believe this gives him the power to revive country music from the dead 🙏

HOOOO BOY LETS GO—
so for the last month I’ve been severely plagued by the idea of a space pirate/android au, and here’s what I’ve managed to come up with, which is a rant accompanied by sketches :)
The setting is vaguely futuristic. “The Revenge”, a custom ship with solar sails, is captained by a wannabe space pirate Stede Bonnet fleeting from his past. His crew consists of both humans and androids, who are free to fall in love without prejudice and harassment. Lucius (lu-spr199s) is a construction designer robot who instead chose drawing dicks and polyamory as his hobbies (both not programmed by his initial settings). Pete is just some guy engineer who conveniently likes the ideas of 1) polyamory and 2) having his dick drawn.
Tumblr media
Jim (cuz I’m tired of the alien/robot/eldritch god enby sterotype) is a human. They are a street kid, good with tech and violence, very agile and competitive. Frenchie (fr3nn4) is a tad glitchy. He stutters, stumbles over words, makes repetitive motions and sometimes gets distracted/spaces out. Yes I made him into an autistic android. No I will not take criticisms. Others that I might sketch later are as such: Roach, Oluwande, The Swede are androids. Ivan, Fang, Wee John are humans. No one knows what the fuck Buttons is.
Tumblr media
I imagine Stede’s ship to look something like this (not my artwork sry):
Tumblr media
On the other hand, there is “Queen Anne”, ruled by the most wanted man this side of the galaxy, Edward Teach. His First Mate, Izzy (iz-1701), is a former battle android that was set out to be deconstructed after four decades of missions. Ed accidentally acquired him when raiding a transporting vessel, and Izzy has been in his service for ten years now. He completes logs and maintenance around the ship and also fixes himself up when needed (although it’s becoming increasingly difficult due to the age of his model — the company stopped producing details for him long ago).
And this is how I approximately see Queen Anne, inspired by the concepts of Nemo’s Nautilus:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the wake of Stede’s crushing into their lives, Izzy struggles with overcoming his programming and breaking the three laws of Azimov: do not harm a human being, do not resist orders, protect own existence if it’s not against the first two rules. Stede, meanwhile, also has some skeletons in his closet that are bound to be discovered. And Ed is just along for the ride.
Will Izzy finally admit to having emotions? Will Ed stop perceiving him as a mere object and not a person with opinions? Will Stede help bring about the necessary changes and insights?? *whispers* remains to be seen…
Also if you want to have a grasp on what inspired this idea and what I see this au’s Izzy as, listen to The Hoosiers’ “Goodbye Mr A”. I think it captures the essence of Izzy’s internal conflict quite well. Also also, I have some plot ideas but I am seemingly unable to sit down and write a cohesive multi-chapter fic, so bear with me as I post updates to this insanity :>

Can we have more autistic zuko headcanons? Thank you 😊💓
i will always write autistic zuko hcs! i hope you like them!
You know that kid in elementary school who learned all about Greek or Roman or Norse mythology? Yeah, that’s 100% Zuko. At first, he picked up the book of Fire Nation mythology because Ursa wanted to get him into reading and the book looked shiny, but as soon as he started reading, he was enthralled. He knew about all the different fire nation spirits and looked for any book with anything related to them. It was because of this that Ursa took Zuko to his first play. There was an amazing theater troupe in the capital that was putting on Love Amongst the Dragons. Zuko loved it and often asked if they could see it again. Ursa said yes and they saw the play on Ember Island. Zuko absolutely hated it. His was over stimulated the entire time and desperately wanted to leave. The acting itself was bad, but the sound and feel of the seats they were sitting on was just too much. Ursa took him back when he started crying ten minutes after the second intermission.
Zuko thought there was something wrong with him because of it. He thought that it was something he could just get over if he tried. He forced himself not to stim and to try to make it through situations where everything was too loud. This... didn’t work and he just ended up more and more uncomfortable and unhappy.
Zuko loves animals. Like loves them. He went to the zoo with Lu Ten one day and saw all these amazing animals and wanted nothing more than to take one home. He begged and begged Ozai to let him have a pet. But Ozai said no, he didn’t want one and thought they were messy. So, Ursa let Zuko start feeding the turtleducks with her. And, whenever Lu Ten was around, he took Zuko out to the zoo or circus to see more animals. Before Lu Ten left for Ba Sing Se, he bought Zuko a dragon stuffed animal. It was bright red and really soft. He told Zuko to hug it when he missed him. Zuko adored the dragon and even named it Lu Ten. While Zuko liked stuffed animals, he usually didn’t like the fabric they were made of, but this one was perfect. It was always perched on Zuko’s bed and Zuko slept with it every night. When Lu Ten died, Zuko carried around Dragon Lu Ten all the time. However, Ozai told him to cut it out and to stop calling the Dragon Lu Ten because Zuko could anger his cousin if he ever said something rude to the dragon.
Eventually Zuko named the dragon Ame for the rain because the rain also reminded him of his mother. There was no reason for him to think of his mother when he thought of rain, but he did.
He takes Ame with him when he gets banished, when he goes home, and when he joins the avatar. By that point, Ame is dirty and old, but Zuko will never part with it. Once, right after Lu Ten died, one of the servants took Ame without Zuko’s permission and he threw a tantrum so big the servant was not allowed near him again.
Out of everyone, Katara is the first one to find out about Ame.
She’s going through his stuff at the Western Air Temple because she’s doing laundry. She makes a face when she feels something fuzzy and pulls it out. She sees this cute stuffed dragon that’s been worn with love and time. She never really thought of Zuko as a stuffed animal person, but she wasn’t wholly concerned about it.
Zuko walked in on her looking at Ame and got very angry. It was the only time that Zuko yelled at her. He was so enraged that she was holding it that he hit his arm on the stone wall. While he barely flinched, Katara got upset. She wanted to heal him right away. Zuko insisted he was fine and it really didn’t hurt but Katara forced him to let her heal him.
Zuko made Katara promise that she wouldn’t tell anyone and she smiled to herself: seeing Zuko as no longer an enemy, maybe even a possible friend.
sorry this got kinda long and became about zuko’s attachment to a stuffed animal but i think it’s accurate. i hope you liked it bc i liked writing it! feel free to send me more hcs i love them!

Iroh accepts, mournfully, that it's going to be a long, long time before Zuko ever feels safe again.  If Zuko ever feels safe again.  Because of that, because Iroh thinks he already knows the reason for his nephew's silence, he doesn't look closer at just how quiet Zuko has been since waking.
Iroh should have noticed.
He wonders, later, if this, too, is his fault.  If something he said while his nephew was still drifting, barely aware of his surroundings, had struck deeper than he meant it to.  If even something as simple as a well-meant shh, Zuko, shh had a hand in this.
If Iroh had somehow taken his original mistake and deepened it, rather than trying to make up for it.
(If this is the shape of the scar that Iroh left on his nephew).

What would be autistic!Azula's special interest? Bonus points for thinking beyond firebending and military stuff.
You send me the best asks, @eshusplayground.
So this is partially me being a dork, but I once found an amusing number of traits Azula seems to share with Zhuge Liang, one of the most accomplished strategists of ancient China. (This mostly came when I realized I think she uses most, if not all, of his Thirty-Six Stratgems at one point or another) He's a fascinating figure, very much in the "warrior and scholar" vein. One of the non-strategy accomplishments attributed to him are various improvements to the bolt crossbow.
So, riffing on that...I am weirdly into the idea of small!Azula being really into clockwork mechanisms. Extremely tiny mechanisms precisely made that need to be in their correct places to make incredible movements. Things that moved on their own when she gave them the right set of inputs.
And maybe she took things apart to see how they worked. (Meaning people who didn't understand just saw her destroying things)
Maybe she really was fascinated by little clockwork men, figures that could move on their own. (It would make Iroh's gift extra tragic. He thought they were dolls. But when he sends something that cannot move, that only exists to sit and look pretty, something maybe more "appropriate" than the soldier men he's seen her play with...
It almost hurts worse, to get something that not only wasn't what you wanted, but taunted you by being so superficially close to the thing you did)
But working with her hands is not "appropriate" for a noble lady or for a princess. Azula earns looks of disapproval when Ozai or Ursa catch her with grease on her fingers. Her mother doesn't understand. Ozai would only tolerate the interest if Azula turned it towards the military.
Lu Ten maybe is the only one who accepts it. He doesn't understand it, but it's the thing his baby cousin is interested in. And so one year, as a gift, he gets her a small clockwork dragon. It can flap its wings and twist its head from side to side. There's even a tiny spark wheel in the back of it's mouth, allowing it to spit tiny sparks. It's the one thing Azula refuses to take apart, despite how she'd spend hours staring at it, trying to figure out how it moved.
When Lu Ten dies, the dragon does too. Azula is hurt and angry and doesn't understand her own feelings, and maybe in her grief, the little dragon gets...broken too. And then, when she's forced to open it, desperate because she didn't mean it, she didn't want this, she can't break this because she couldn't control herself...
Azula opens the metal skin with trembling hands and sees loose gears and twisted springs. Tiny bars bent and useless. She doesn't know how to fix it.
(And maybe, years later, she takes that little dragon into much more careful hands. And in the quiet of her room, her demons silence themselves as Azula's steady and deft hands patiently put something that had once been broken forever back together again.)

Great,” Aang says. “Finally, all of my friends know each other now!”

I love Juxtaposition! You writing Lu Ten as a completely spoiled and rather oblivious teen is so good! He’s so full of himself and it’s fantastic because it’s so realistic. That’s something I love about your writing too! You’re not afraid to dive into darker themes (rape, abuse, etc). All of your stories are great, but I’m just really excited to see where you take Juxtaposition. Also, I’m curious about Zuko’s struggle with food. What is your thought process behind his slow eating/sensitive stomach?
Thank you!! 😊 I'm really glad my writing feels authentic. ☺️
So, I based Zuko's food struggles in this fic on my own childhood issues (write what you know, the lazy writer's excuse to do less research 😂) with food. I'm autistic, and there are some foods that I just do not vibe with. When I was a kid, my mom would put a plate of pork chops in front of me, and I would chew a tiny piece for like over a minute before spitting it out because it was too tough. Eventually all of the pork chops were too cold and I didn't want that grossness in my mouth. She. Was. Pissed. Now I'm a vegetarian. Problem solved (not really). Hooray!
I have a very sensitive stomach and am a VERY slow eater. It definitely annoys a lot of people. It can be hard for allistic people sometimes to understand an autistic person's behavior. They'll just assume we're "being difficult" or trying to annoy them. 🤷 So yeah, I'm using a lot of those experiences for inspiration. Plagiarising my own life, one might say. 😂
Thanks for the question and and for your lovely, kind words!

OKAY SO, it hit me the other week, like. thematically, right? zuko + regaining honor.........dishonored. hello???
but i had to go deeper and holy fuck did i ever??????
so for starters, it’s defs one of those au’s where instead of like a creative split of media, it’s just. “dishonored but the main characters are the atla cast instead of corvo and them”.
the outsider has taken an interest in our royal fire family. he acts as if the affairs of humans mean nothing to him, but if anyone bothers to do the research, you can see he’s marked others in the family tree.
azulon, notably, was not marked.
sozin was, and used the powers of the Mark to start this setting’s take on the 100 year war. i have a background lore HC that he also marks a lot of the ‘airbenders’, and that the concept of an ‘avatar’ is something only they have, and it has to do w/ being marked. (the windblast power is clearly a placeholder for airbending, yfm?)
anyway.
iroh was marked for a while, secretly. he went from being a normal commander to suddenly The Hero Of The Nation thanks to it, and no one aside from himself, the outsider, and his son knew.
lu ten’s knowledge of his father’s mark is what got him killed. overseer’s mistakenly thought he was the one with the power due to his knowledge, and they murdered him for it.
iroh killed about half of those responsible before he realized that not only is it not going to bring his son back, it’s also only going to reinforce the views the overseers have.
he piled his runes and his bone charms at a draped altar and sat in the candle light smelling burning chamomile until the outsider showed himself, and he renounced him.
he gave up the mark, and the power, and he was the first human to ever do so.
meanwhile, ozai has been watching his brothers successes from the sidelines and growing ever more frustrated with being unable to match it.
one night, he awakens to a world balanced on end and awash in blackness, and the outsider taunting him by asking what would you do if you suddenly had the power to achieve your goals?
he hides his own mark, for a time. he’s unable to completely hide it from ursa, and she is unable to accept it. she is unable to truly accept that the outsider is real and not a children’s fairytale designed to make kids behave, and she agrees not to involve overseers in exchange for ozai ‘banishing’ her and releasing her from a life she never really wanted. (she loved him ((because fuck what the comics say)) yes, and she loves her children moreso, but she never wanted to be royalty.)
they swear to each other one day, they will reunite. perhaps not as partners, but maybe as free souls. and perhaps friends.
he promises to care for the children.
it is the first promise he breaks.
ozai is plagued by the outsider.
tortured.
every time he closes his eyes, the black eyed bastard is there.
is this all you can do with my gift? he asks.
you were a dark soul all along, you just needed the proper push, he says.
ozai suffers for years from exhaustion. he is unable to stop the outsider from visiting his dreams, and when destroying every shrine his soldiers find does not help, he resorts to refusing to sleep.
it drives him mad, and will eventually lead to his downfall.
at the height of his father’s madness, zuko is banished for speaking out of turn at a war meeting. his father holds him down into the smoldering embers of a fire in his office, and banishes him from the lands.
the second night of his banishment, zuko awakens to a word balanced on end, and awash in blackness.
“this is not the first time i have been with your ilk,” says the outsider.
he marks zuko in spite of his protests, and it is here zuko learns that his uncle once carried the gift.
“he calls it a gift,” says iroh sadly. “but really, it is a curse. i am sorry he has paid you visits.”
iroh is now the one that begins to lose sleep.
the outsider’s mark did not turn him into a maniacal tyrant, but he knows he chased the glory of being the dragon of the west because of it. he knows without the mark, he would not have slaughtered dozens of men in a blind rage.
he knows the mark turned him into the worst version of himself, and he loses sleep with abject terror of what the worst version of his nephew could possibly be.
in the end.
he had no reason to worry.
zuko turns out to be the one who should have been marked the entire time. the one who can turn the curse into a gift.
among his journey, zuko discovers that while the outsider can visit whomever he chooses, and invade the dreams of mortals,
so too can his family line.
there is something inherent in this royal family, they can wander into the void when they sleep in the way that others sleep walk.
ozai drove himself mad thinking the outsider was tormenting him, when in reality, he was the one trespassing in the other’s living room, and getting mad at the outsider being present.
ozai’s control over, and power with the mark wanes the more mad he drives himself.
zuko’s strengthens with every lesson he learns about the magic that enriches his lands.

4, 9, 13, 15 fic writer asks
4. Something a commenter did point out that you wish they hadn’t.
Unsolicited concrit is the only thing that comes to mind right now. I can’t think of a time when someone’s noticed something or guessed something ahead of time that made me go “Aw, come on”
9. What’s your fandom’s most overused trope?
Honestly I have no idea. I know many tropes are used a lot, but I can’t think of any that are overused, or at least none that are overused specifically in OP fanfics.
13. What do you need to work on most?
Whatever my current WIP is, which at this moment is a Law//Lu story I’ve been trying to write for a few years now (I’m on chapter five out of maybe ten)
15. We all project onto our characters. Where has your personality or life choices leaked onto the page the most?
Even when trying to write dialogue in-character (which I think I’m pretty good at), sometimes I’ve phrased things in a way I would say it, but that that character definitely would not. I also tend to project uhhhh identity issues, depression, and anxiety on a few characters, and I hc more than one character as autistic or having ADHD (of which I am both).

‘Rustig, schat.
