Q: If I had to compare Clark Evans to another work, what would I?

A: I’d have to say, Message in a Bottle by Nicholas Sparks and A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis.

Q: Every story has a piece of the author. Which parts are most you?

A: Clark Evans and Kat McNamara are each a little part of me and a lot of and a lot more a combination of people I’ve met along the way. I will say, the parts of the story that are me can be seen in the musical choices of the characters (Sinatra) and the interactions of the characters being like that of an old movie.

Q: What’s your favorite part of the novel?

A: The relationship between Clark and his daughter. I knew when I was fleshing out the characters that Clark and his daughter were going to have the characteristics and bond of a loving, supportive father-daughter relationship. The kind every little girl wants to say at the end she had with her dad.

Q: Was there a particularly tricky part of the novel for you to write?

A: Yes. I had to do several re-writes on the part of Kat’s secret. It was too difficult for me on a personal level to include, but it is also an integral part of the story that it remained.

Q: How did you decide the characters names?

A: Clark Evans is a combination of one of my favorite actors of all time (Clark Gable), and Evans is the town I grew up in. Katharine McNamara was named after my favorite actress (Katharine Hepburn). .

Q: What would you like the reader to walk away feeling?

A: I’d like the reader to walk away, knowing they’re always loved. That no matter if you’ve lost a loved one, parted ways with friends/family, the bits and pieces of them that you hold dear is a part of you. And because of that, whether you can adequately convey their impact on your life or the grief of their loss, they will be in you for all those who meet you long after to experience. .

Today, we have the honor of having with us Ms. Shelly Miller (@shellymillerwriter). She is the author of Rhythms of Rest: Finding the Spirit of Sabbath in a Busy World. I find that rest is a topic many of us haven’t mastered. True rest has so much to do with trust, pausing and releasing control, even in the face of uncertainty. Despite how difficult it may be, however, God has commanded us to rest and remember His sovereignty. I am excited to look at this topic of rest more closely. Q&A with Author Alice Kuipers Part 1

1. What does your writing space look like? Are you an office person, or a laptop and anywhere kind of person? - I work anywhere. I have a laptop with headphones, which are a crucial tool for me. When I put music on, I can switch off the noise and the world and get writing. I have four small children so being able to tune out the noise they make is very useful. But I do have an office space too. It's in the basement at our house, which is nicer than it sounds, and I love to settle down there with our family dog, Bamboo, put on headphones and write. Often, however, the kids come in and want to start drawing or chatting with me, so I tend to grab my laptop and go to cafes to work. 2. What is your writing process like? Outlines and rough drafts for days? Or let it flow from chapter to chapter and worry about story structure and editing later? - I have learned over the years that I write better with some structure. I used to just let it flow, but now I have a mixture of rough outlining and crazy writing binges where I write a thousand words in an hour. I have to do a lot of editing later either way, it seems. Tons and tons of rethinking and rewriting. I'm very lucky to work with some great editors. I've attached a photo of one set of edits for your readers to peak at -- often an editorial letter will have hundreds of these comments! All the sections you read in these edits have been cut from the final book. It's a lot of work to rewrite a book but it always gets me closer to the story I'm trying to tell. ** photo will be part of part two** 3. Do you enjoy reading reviews and thoughts from bloggers? If so, do you feel their thoughts change your ideas for your next work? - I love getting feedback from readers. Reviewers make me nervous because often they are spot on with their comments, but it's too late to change the book. I wouldn't say that comments from readers or reviewers change my ideas for stories, but they certainly help me to become the writer I want to be. And they do this by being honest and open about what works and what doesn't. Some things I can't change -- my tendency to be interested in emotional relationships can feel sentimental to some readers. But I try to learn as a writer and make each book stronger than the one before, and astute reviews are a great place for me to learn.

And what does it mean to you? . A: Poetry is art. Art is beauty. Beauty is subjective. Subjects are chosen. Choices are imbibed. Thus, poetry is what I have chosen as a medium of my artistic expression. It is how I picture life. There is beauty in everything. Every little creation is a gift. A joy. And art is how we define this beauty. There is Nature's art in serenity of the hills, and human art in advancement of the metropolitans. We can heal others with written words of kindness and the dexterity of a doctor's scalpel alike. Cooking is an art. So is music. All of us are artists celebrating our choices. Likewise, poetry has been mine. . Q: Who is that author, you admire and why? . A: I wish I had a template answer to this. I get asked many times about favourites. Truth be told, I have none. Yes, I do appreciate the work of a few of them. Yet whenever I read a book, a poem or a story, whoever is behind that product, and invested in it with his heart, mind and soul, becomes my favourite for that while.
