#as someone who won't interact with a fandom because of bad vibes

Could you please tag your hazbin hotel/helluva boss posts for blacklisting? Thank you
Tumblr media
i can do my best. all things with this bean will have the ;;niffty tag, which i can absolutely recommend you blacklist. she's the only one i intend to play from the series and i refuse to get involved with darker plotlines here, so there won't be anything too intense.
lots of stabbing, though.

AITA for unfollowing someone on Twitter without warning?
Ok I know this is silly, it's low stakes but here goes.
I unexpectedly became fairly popular in a smallish fandom after some of my art was shared on Twitter. I don't like Twitter for fandom but it really boosted my audience so I joined up. I mostly stayed quiet over there because there was a lot of infighting and I just generally didn't feel "safe". It felt like if I expressed any opinions at all I'd run the risk of being cancelled. So I'd post my work and periodically engage but I didn't really make friends.
There was this one poster who had gotten pretty big in the fandom on Twitter. We interacted through DMs a few times. We were friendly but I wouldn't say we were friends. I didn't get very personal with them. I liked some of the things they made, but they were younger than me and I didn't really match their vibe.
This person was involved in some things that I personally found distasteful, but weren't exactly wrong. I won't go into specifics but it was fairly low stakes "rude" behavior that I just didn't like. I didn't feel like I should "call them out", first because we weren't really close and second because none of it was really that bad. I try to be a live and let live sort of person.
I've been on Tumblr for a long time and before the update that shows you in notifications if someone is your mutual, following/unfollowing wasn't that big a deal here. It was basically impossible to tell if a specific person had unfollowed you and me and most of the people I know here pretty much ignored Tumblr follow counts and never paid attention to who was coming and going.
This person on Twitter was starting to annoy me every time I saw their icon on my TL. again, they hadn't done anything "wrong", I just wasn't vibing.
So I unfollowed them. I just didn't want to see their stuff anymore.
They immediately noticed and posted about how nasty it was to unfollow someone without telling them why (Twitter showed me their posts about it bc someone else I follow was replying to them) and how I could have at least softblocked them and how it was a misuse of my influence as a BNF (which I never thought I was or claimed to be).
I didn't know what softblocking was I didn't know I could mute somebody. I thought it was just follow or unfollow and I thought they'd never notice.
I saw that they were upset but I felt going to their DMs to say that I unfollowed because I didn't like their vibe would be more upsetting than just leaving it alone. They clearly disagreed.
So AITA for unfollowing and not saying why?
What are these acronyms?

/728286197798076416/ - this is me. Before tumblr the sites I hung out in are socmed sites that have a friend system and not a follow one. I got a bunch of friends through those sites forums and seeing how some people interact with their mutuals here reminded me of those times so I thought that's how they become "friends" on this site when there's no friend system (and by that I meant like an online acquaintance you'd interact with a lot and not actual friend-friend unless you two actually got close).
It's also just been at least a year since they followed back. I have interacted with their posts with mostly likes and some reblogs (sometimes with added commentary since I like their posts) but aside from a like or two when they followed back, they haven't done anything else. A random follower who hasn't liked or reblogged anything from me even from the start doesn't bother me but I've seen people here make a big deal of being "mutuals" with someone and some of them have made posts about how their mutuals are important to them/their friends which fits how they talk to their other mutuals on posts but doesn't apply to me. It's what confuses and bothers me about why they decide to follow back cause it doesn't make sense based from these stuff.
I read the replies on my original ask and I guess I really just shouldn't think much about this. It's just so strange to me so it bothers me.
--
...
Nonnie, I was there for the whole Livejournal era, starting in 2002 before most of fandom was even on it.
I can say with certainty that calling the following function "friends" led to plenty of wank but no actual increase in how much it meant that you were a friendly acquaintance.
Some people have always used sites this way. Some just follow you because they meant to keep track of your account and go check it later. Did they actually go check it later? Questionable.
Most likely, these people talking about "mutuals" in that manner don't derive the friendship from being mutuals. They follow back people they're already friends with for other reasons. They may also be thinking only of the mutuals who talk to them a lot in ways they find amusing or notable.
One thing we cannot control is whether other people like our writing.
I get more than the usual share of replies. Some commenters stand out to me because I like how they phrase things. It's usually the people who sound like they read a wide variety of genres and as though they have a similar vibe to mine. I'll usually notice the Spanish speakers (if they mention it) because that's of interest to me, but I'll still probably only click with the ones who are pretty good at English in a way that sounds nice to my ear. Honestly, that's hard to quantify because it's different form how native someone's grammar is. I have a bunch of regular rebloggers coming from a variety of languages who are a pleasure to read despite copious grammatical errors because they're funny or sound colloquial despite that or because their content is so interesting. Some people sound stiff or convoluted despite having zero technical errors. (And that's true regardless of native language.)
If I find you painful to read for EFL reasons or bad writing skill reasons or humor that reads as tryhard instead of funny to me or excessive hostility or some other thing, we won't click.
Neither I nor the other person has any significant control over those reactions.
Now, I haven't observed your mutuals and have no idea what kinds of things you guys post, but I have observed a common pattern, both on tumblr and back in the day on LJ, where someone interacts a little but not enough and their comments are okay but nothing special. If the people they're interacting with are busy or already have a zillion friends, sometimes, they just get missed.
I also think performative posts about ~my mutuals~ tend to be hollow bragging about being popular. When they aren't, there's an implicit sense that they're talking about a particular subset of mutuals.
There's not really that much of a contradiction here. You were just taking those posts at face value, and you shouldn't.

I love your commentary on every show you watch! I have started watching several shows because of it :) I have a question: how do you handle a show not going the way you anticipated? How can one react to it and not be swept away by the online fandom breaking down? (It's ok if you don't have any answers, it was just something I have been thinking about after being a mostly a bystander in fandom for several years. I hope you are having a nice day 😊
Thank you for taking the time to read my silly little thoughts. Sometimes a show brings out a lot of big ideas in me, and sometimes I'm just giggling at little stuff. You can tell when I'm tired and watching a show, because my commentary might be a bit pat.
I think the healthiest way to deal with a show not going the way I anticipated is to question my base assumptions in the first place. I ask if the show ever promised me something I was hoping for, and then I'll ask why they chose to go some other way with it.
I think the most recent example of me breaking with the primary online reaction was with I Promised You the Moon. I understood that Oh-aew and Teh were not a perfect couple, and that Teh's fundamental insecurity was an intrinsic part of his character. I also appreciated a story about a couple that was always going to struggle. So, when I see fans deeply upset by the drama that unfolded there, I appreciate that they're connecting with the characters and aching with and for them. I focus my feelings on what's next, and hope that those fans can see the mistakes Oh and Teh made, and hopefully avoid them or manage them more effectively in their own romantic endeavors.
I think it's also important to build my own fandom niche of perspectives you can appreciate and enjoy. I think the KP fandom is too broad to reasonably be part of the entirety of it. It's the same with big fandoms like superheroes, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. They're too old and too popular for me to allow mass frustration or mass praise to color my experience too much, because I don't know exactly where everyone is coming from. I interact with fans who are vibing the same way I am, and avoid talking about things I know I'm not vibing about with fans. This happens with people I've known for years. Someone who is ride-or-die with me on one show may have a hard line about another show that isn't a line for me.
Right now we're seeing some of that with The Eclipse and Love in the Air. There are a few distinct approaches to those shows that will inherently color the viewing experience. With the Eclipse, I find that one must engage directly with the politics of the show to appreciate the relationships because these characters represent much of the political action happening in youth protest culture in Thailand.
With Love in the Air, I've approached the show as work from a survivor and a kinkster who is working through things in her writing. It allows me some emotional distance, and so I treat her characters like I might a stage play rather than real people; they are meant to fill a thematic role in the conversation being had. So, I think it's okay to reject the core idea that "people who have built up walls after trauma need someone to break them out of it" as well as the idea that "good relationships can have bad/terrible starts."
For me, I think I judge a work based on its execution of its core premise. I don't ask romcoms to be super serious, and I don't ask psychological horror to be slapstick. So, if a show is frustrating me, it's usually because of genre-blending not going well, or some latent cultural theme I'm not fully connecting to going over my head. When that happens I'll do some reading about what the intent may have been, or just politely drop the show. There's enough entertainment that I won't let a few disappointing shows define my experience online.
Also, the filter button is strong. I will not watch TharnType for a variety of reasons, and so I filter it. I have never once said that I think TharnType is bad. I just know it isn't for me. Being able to look at something a lot of people are saying is really good or really bad and saying, "Ah, I don't think that's for me," and then going about your life is extremely liberating as a fan. I don't need to moralize my tastes.
Thank you for your question. It gave me a bit to think about, and I am glad I took the time to write out vaguely how I engage with fandom.

Can I be really selfish for a second? Because I hate when something leaks related to their personal lives and it might affect how they deal with fans in the future. Every time something happens, they withdraw from social media and don't really interact with anything or anyone - and I'm not saying it's a bad thing! Good for them for not coming online, because truthfully they do not owe us with anything regarding their personal lives. But what pisses me off is that often stalkers are still considered fans and they are the ones who make it impossible for us to enjoy whatever content the tannies give to us. Jungkook was coming to do weverse lives so randomly and he enjoyed those and he liked talking with us, and then someone stalked him to his gym and started sending him food and now he disappeared. And now he can't come online to talk to us because of some random person who can't differentiate real life from some fantasy in their head. The same with all the other boys; Jimin used to update us on random things, but every time he breathed, he got hate for no fucking reason. I don't know if he sees it, I genuinely hope he doesn't (or only a little). Tae used to come and share his playlists with us or just vibe for a minute or two with Yeontan and then end his lives. And now he definitely won't show up for a while after what happened. Regardless if it's really him or not, media has jumped on this like hyenas, so I truly don't blame him if he's just IA for a few months... But the sad part is that they enjoyed talking with us and there are so many normal people in this fandom who enjoyed seeing and interacting with them. And because of stalkers and people who find their homes and threaten them etc, normal fans can't enjoy anything. The tannies can't enjoy anything. We can't have something nice together without these people ruining it for us.
Is it really being selfish? I mean, as fan is only right for you to enjoy the little or big interactions we have with them. You're not forcing them to do something they don't want for your own entertainment, that's what makes it special. These situations are bad for us but also for them, because it makes them feel uncomfortable doing what they love. And this situation is midly bad, but what happened to JK is bordeline psycho and uncomfortable for them as well as for us.
That being said, we'll see what happens now. Hopefully, Tae will feel at ease enough to share things with his fans, since seems like they were at least partially aware of the pictures taken.

Thoughts on solackson..... because for me its just as bad as percico or jasico because age gap :/
Also thoughts on the opposite? Like will and percy rivalry
Because i have seen so many posts about it but will give a little "let it goooo" vibes
Will he hold on to the grudges?
Okay, so I'll preface this with a general blanket thing about me and shipping: usually, with a few exceptions across a few fandoms, I'm not an active shipper. My stance is usually "is this couple canon? Yes? Neat" or "is this couple canon? No? Okay, I don't really care about it". I very rarely actively ship characters who are not canonically together, and for the most part I accept canon couples as being canon and acknowledge their existence but give them no more of my mental facilities than that. I also almost never see any point in splitting up canon couples unless they split in canon; I'm largely a stickler for canon so aside from the occasional toxic relationship I see presented as "this is fine and normal look how adorable they are", I functionally ship canon ships and dismiss non-canon ships that break up canon ships to happen.
(Solangelo is the first canon couple in a while I have been more than just passively "okay that's neat" about; the other Riordanverse ships very much fall into that category for me and while I'll acknowledge their existence in my fics, I won't go out of my way to specifically write that ship. I'm far more of a platonic or familial relationship fan).
With that in mind, I automatically don't ship Solackson because it's a) not canon, and b) in order for it to happen, both Percabeth and Solangelo need to be split up, so even just on those grounds... no, I don't ship Solackson.
That being said, I do have other reasons why I don't ship it beyond the bog-standard ones. One, as you say, is age. I more don't ship Percico or Jasico because I view their relationships as being more familial, but the age gap there is also a bit eh, considering how young they are in general (an eighteen year old with a fourteen year old is urgh. A twenty-four year old with a twenty-eight year old is not so bad, for example, and the older the involved characters get, the less it bothers me), and of course Will is approximately the same age as Nico (about five months older, if we ignore the casino and use the fanon birthday of 23rd August for Will). Another is their lack of interaction in canon. Now, that isn't always a no-go for me in fandoms (I have a ship where the characters are never seen together in one fandom, although they canonically would have known each other), but in this fandom it feels odd - especially as Percy is the main character and our main narrator for the first series.
(Non-canonical main character shipping is, as a general rule, something I really tend to steer clear of, because they get shipped with everyone regardless of chemistry or care for keeping them or the other character(s) in character and it honestly bores me.)
But even when we compare Will and Percy in general... I can't see it. Will has the stubbornness to handle Percy, that's true, but Percy doesn't have the stubbornness to handle Will where Will needs it most - calling him out on his own self-esteem issues, forcing him to stop and rest instead of working himself to the ground. It would be like the worst Solangelo takes I've seen - Will functionally acting as the healer/caretaker but getting no healing or care in return (there's a word for this and it's unhealthy. Toxic is also applicable).
And then there's the elephant in the room - Michael's death.
This links into your second question as well - how do I feel about their rivalry? Honestly, I can't see Will holding a grudge over it. For one reason, holding a grudge is not like Will - he will call someone out, he will make his displeasure known, but once it's been aired he lets things fall by the wayside because it's over and he sees no point in beating a dead horse (if grudge-holding was something Will struggled with, Solangelo would never work because that's Nico's fatal flaw and they'd clash horribly, but that's clearly not the case because TOA shows us a lovely, healthy relationship dynamic between the two of them).
Another important fact to remember about Michael's death is that while, yes, it was the act of Percy breaking the bridge that resulted in him falling, the entire situation was Michael's choice. Michael is the one who stood his ground, Michael is the one who told Percy to break the bridge. There is no canon evidence that Michael even tried to run - and Will, at the end of the bridge, would have seen this. Will would know that Michael chose not to run, that Michael died to stop Kronos' advance and save them, that it was Michael's decision, basically, to die there.
I cannot see Will blaming Percy for Michael's own decision. I can see Will being devastated by Michael's death (he must have been), I can see him potentially being upset that Percy dragged him off to heal Annabeth rather than letting him keep searching for Michael (although it was Will's duty to heal if he could, and as the camp's top healer, he had to put his duty before his heart then anyway), but I cannot see him blaming Percy or holding it against him.
That being said, I don't think Will and Percy are particularly close. For one thing, in Percy's narration he almost always calls Will "Will Solace" when he's thinking about him or describing what he's doing. There's a distance there between them that suggests they don't interact, like with Michael, who is almost always referred to as "Michael Yew" in narration, but unlike the likes of Silena and Beckendorf, despite also being single-book characters with not much more page time (and while Nico is the same in BOO, we then get TOA where they're - obviously - much closer and the surname thing has been dropped. We never get that from Percy at all). For another, Percy spends very little time at camp and doesn't seem interested in socialising much at all anyway - while his narration calls a bunch of characters "friends", this is very much telling, not showing, and the showing doesn't support this at all (and then we have the Castor Incident, where despite being at camp for two years, Percy never even bothered to learn his name). As Will likely spends a lot of his time in the infirmary, and Percy seems to prefer using water to heal, there's also not much indication that they'd overlap anyway.
So, overall - no, I definitely don't ship Solackson, I don't believe they have a rivalry/Will secretly hates Percy, I think they're just two demigod acquaintances who know who the other is but as a general rule don't hang out that much, but are perfectly fine around the other on the occasions when they do interact.
Neutrality is a very valid dynamic!

About engaging with things you know will annoy you, I think it sometimes just makes more sense for some of us, cos if you want to know what's happening in general and it's a wierd and complicated thing like this cartoon, if you only read about it, you only read about the terrible stuff. And if you actually watch or read it, you experience the whole thing. Problematic things sometimes look slightly better in context and won't leave you as dejected, and you will also have fun for the three seconds that Dick is being a dork. At the end of the day, you will also have experienced some joy before throwing yourself into denial
I am, however, writing this from an apparently privilaged perspective of someone who has not had a chance to see the latest episode and has no clue what y'all are on about
(just want to link the context)
But yeah! Absolutely there with you for basically all of that. Like, in general, if there's one thing I've learned interacting with comics fandom across multiple social media platforms, it's that people WILL take & talk about things out of context, and the context can change a whole lot. I am just someone who always wants the full context to make my own judgement calls.
And also like... there are aspects of the YJ cartoon I enjoy. YJ cartoon is what got me into comics. I know most of what I end up posting these days is about things that annoy me in the show, because I am a big fan of Bitching About Shit, but it's not like I spend every single moment in misery when I watch it. I laugh and smile as well as roll my eyes and groan. I point at the screen going 'OMG THEM' when one of my faves appears in a background for 0.5 seconds and take a million screenshots. I have a groupchat of some irl friends who watch it too and we all have a good time discussing shit and theorizing after each episode. i'm definitely having fun with it too, and that aspect would be missing if I only got all my info about goings on in the show secondhand.
And like... wanting to keep up with it and know what's happening even when there are many aspects I'm not enjoying isn't something I would do with a series I wasn't already invested in. If I started a new show and wasn't vibing with it I wouldn't force myself to watch all of it or whatever, but with something like this cartoon that I first got into literally like 8 or 9 years ago... I've got history with it, it's always gonna mean something to me and i'm always gonna be at least a little invested.
And as I mentioned in the tags on the post I linked above, I feel similarly with like... when there are comic runs I think are bad in the main comics continuity. If I'm already attached to the characters involved, then to me it's worth going through to get the context and form the 'I think this is bad' opinion myself. Like if I hear a run is very bad and no character I care about is involved in it, unless it somehow connected to some other thing/event I was reading, I likely would just never get to it, and never talk about it. But yeah, I made myself go through Teen Titans Vol. 4 & 5 because I wanted to know what the fuck the whole New 52 deal was for the core four, and now when I complain about it I can be specific.

was that kathryn newton? oh no no, that was just tress, a canon character from the cosmere series. they are twenty one years old, use she/they, and are aware that they are not actually from washington dc. too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
how long has your character been here
i'm highkey saying she just showed up
what is your character’s job
i'm unsure. i think any shops that need someone to employ could be a cool plot for tress, but otherwise i'll probably have her wind up at a bakery or working on one of the boat tours in dc. also they're slowly taking some part time college classes
where has your character been pulled from in their fandom
right now i'm in the middle of the book, so in the middle of her journey to try and save charlie. she recently entered the crimson sea, and isn't sure how they got from there to here, but there's enough magic in tress' world that they have a variety of ideas for what might have happened.
has any magic affected your character
nope!
any other info
technically her given name is glorf. this isn't really important cause they exclusively go by tress but i had to share that knowledge.
okay so! gonna do a small lore dump without too many spoilers just need to know basis
the world building in this book is wild. tress is basically from a planet with twelve seas and twelve moons (i think it's twelve lol) and all of the moons release different spores
the spores make up the ocean, not water, hence why she lives on an emerald sea
when any form of water interacts with these spores they have some sort of effect, like growing into vines, or crystals, or shards, or exploding air. sounds cool, except like humans have water all over their body, and when i say the spores interact with water i mean any water
so essentially they're very dangerous. everyone lines their hours with silver or salt cause that kills the spores
suffice to say tress is going to be pretty stressed seeing their first rainfall here.
she's from an absolutely tiny island where no one is allowed to leave, and snuck onto a ship after finding out charlie, the boy she was in love with, was shipped off to an evil sorceress
she basically accidentally joins pirates, a bunch of shenanigans occur, and now she's here.
she basically became the person who worked with the spores on the ship and she's got some with her here in washington though very carefully sealed they're just for emergencies considering they're the main way she's capable of fighting i wanted her to have some
okay!! now one tress as a character
i understand her implicitly. she would rather risk her life than potentially inconvenience someone else and that is a vibe
she loves cups!!! collects cups!! is very excited to be in a new place with a lot of new cups!
pretty naive to the world, though open to learning.
she trusts so easily though it's pretty rough, and always wants to see the best in people. i wouldn't say that she's easy to take advantage of, because tress is pretty practical and smart, but she is the type to given seven thousand second chances because she wants people to be good so badly, and will find even the smallest good trait in people when she shouldn't
smart but that doesn't mean she regularly makes good decisions it just means she will rationalize stupid shit. and so stubborn!!!
very much an overthinker. a great listener but it takes tress a minute to figure out how to talk to other people.
plot ideas
collector buddies: anyone who collects anything please. tress would happily look out for their stuff in exchange for cups and i think it would be cute
in that same vein someone to go to different antique stores with her, again for cups
a roommate. tress is easy to live with and would offer to cook meals
maybe a more difficult character for her to befriend, although tress can handle someone having some bad traits she won't just let you be an asshole to her so we'd have to feel out the vibe
anyone to help her adjust to this world. their island was so small tress can't even fathom the idea of a place where you can't see the ocean no matter where you go. this is all going to be extremely weird to her. she's a good cook. will exchange baked goods for assistance.
as mentioned up above anyone who has some sort of shop and needs an employee this could be cool
school buddies she is going to need some help
a bad influence ig? not for like full crimes but this is someone who's barely even gotten drunk before someone make her have some fun
bisexual, down for a ship, probably on the wholesome side

guide to ao3 tagging
by someone who has used ao3 enough to develop tagging pet peeves
ok so i'm going to kind of walk through a process for tagging your fic, aimed at anyone who feels confused or uncertain about tagging or has ever added "i'm bad at tagging" to their tags (because i presume if you have you would benefit from my little guide)
to start off with, what are the purposes of tagging? i think there are two: to tell a potential reader who has found your fic what to expect, and to help someone who wants to read your fic to find it easier
so. i'll breeze through characters and relationships just because i think additional tags are where people have the most issues? this based on zero concrete evidence
step 1: character tags
characters are probably the easiest part. who's in your fic. write them down. you don't have to add them in order of most significant to least significant, but it can be a nice touch if you feel like it. if you're thinking, "this character is briefly in my fic/is talked about a lot but not actually there, you probably shouldn't tag for that character. people filtering for or against that character will find or miss your fic when they don't want to, and it's not going to affect anyone else.
step 2: relationship tags
slightly more involved than characters, and very much a topic of debate. my advice: start by identifying your main relationship. the shorter your fic, the more likely it is to focus on one ship or relationship dynamic above others. tag that first. then any additional ships, if applicable. any ship tagged should receive a considerable amount of focus within the fic, eg the characters have to interact in some way. background ships should most likely not be tagged, as you can add an additional tag for background (that ship) instead, letting people who have found the fic know that it will feature minimal amounts of that ship. ao3 will filter anything in the relationships section as that ship's tag. just because you added "background" or "a tiny bit of" or something, your fic will still show up under searches for that ship, which most people consider annoying and/or misleading, to a degree.
moving on to the additional tags section: this is something that can be tricky to figure out. bear in mind that if you have a short fic, you probably won't need to use that many tags, which is fine. people will still find your fic if they would be interested in it. overtagging can make your work look suspicious, if the word count seems unreasonably small compared to the number of tags. similarly, undertagging a long fic can make it hard to know what will happen to make it worth the word count.
step 3: themes
once you've got all your characters and relationships sorted, consider the main theme or themes of your fic. it is a character study? focused on two characters getting together? a fix it? add probably one to three (ish) tags for themes, depending on length and complexity. this is for the general genre of your fic, and is going to be really crucial for helping people find your fic. if your fic is a relationship reveal but you don't tag it as such, someone reading only relationship reveal fics is not going to find your work.
step 4: vibes
what is the main mood of your fic? the longer the fic, again, the more moods you're likely to go through. so, an 800 word drabble is probably going to just have one vibe, but a 50k slowburn is going to go through several different phases with different moods. this category is for more abstract tags like fluff, angst, humor, crack, etc.
step 5: tropes
did you just write a fic utilising one or more tropes? add them as tags. people love tropes. people are going to filter for specific tropes. tag your tropes. tropes include: character in specific job role, character exhibiting specific personality trait, "peter parker's field trip to stark industries". often the tropes will be fandom specific, unlike themes and vibes. utilise ao3's tag search capabilities to check if your trope is an existing tag. still add it if it isn't, and it'll get wrangled appropriately. (shout out to the tag wranglers, who do god's work daily)
step 6: anything else important
look it's a catch all final step wow. is there anything else that features significantly in your fic that you think people should know about? add it. add anything that is significant and could be a trigger, a selling point, or a hard pass. a good way to think is if you were trying to find the fic you just wrote, what would you filter for to find it? add that.
hope this helped someone out, i am by no means an expert so add anything you feel is relevant. i know tagging is a bit of touchy subject sometimes but i think i've kept this general enough to do more help than harm.

Since you’re an old soul on the World Wide Web that is currently on fire.
Have you meet someone online that you interact with that ended being pretty neat despite you starting off the wrong foot or that you two were so different?
i guess you're looking for some advice? i'm not exactly sure here. i'm not the best internet aunt to ask. this might be completely not what you wanted.
when it comes to differences, i can't think of any such situation. i have some rl friends, though not very close ones, who are very different from me but we get on okay.
but online i'm not sure of course what you mean by being different. because online i mostly meet people through my interests so we do have a lot in common especially that having some experience in fandom i block really liberally if anything ticks me off.
like for instance i have online friends who have children and i'm very not into that lifestyle so they are very different from me in that respect. but we vibe very well in terms of our interests and we have a lot to talk about so like it doesn't matter that our lives outside of the online sphere are quite different.
when it comes to starting off on the wrong foot... it's hard for me to say anything because i don't know your situation. but my personal experience is that usually there's a reason why people online start off on the wrong foot. that either they just won't vibe well or because there's something much more unpleasant hidden underneath. so if you're asking about a real situation, i'd think about what is in it for you to put effort into building a relationship with that person.
one encounter i remember quite vividly was an interaction with a person who came to my dms, condescended on me while wanting something. when i told them not to talk to me like that because it's rude but also mildly triggering to me, they first tried to gaslight me that they thought we were friends because i liked and reblogged their posts before - we weren't mutuals, they never even liked or reblogged my posts. and when i was wtf you are talking about, we're not friends we don't even know each other, they instantly changed their tune to telling me that they've always though i was hostile towards them - i disagreed with some of their fandom takes in the posts i reblogged. after that interaction in the dms i tried to remain civil with them in the fandom. i didn't block them because i was new to fandom back them and they were kinda a name in the fandom, i was aftriad that i'd antagonise everyone if i block them. end of the story was that i blocked them and they blocked me some months later anyway because their fandom behaviour got worse and i called them out publicly. the moral of this story is i should've blocked them during that conversation in the dms, before they even got to the friends part, when they tried to tell me that being condescending to me in their first message was actually ok and i shouldn't have had a problem with them, and especially how dared i tell them that their behaviour towards me was triggering because that made them feel bad.
so like yeah. if it's not something that's really bothering, like if they don't have the hallmarks of being an awful person and the starting off on the wrong foot was just a misunderstanding then i think it's possible to build a relationship. just talk about stuff that interests you both, maybe do some fandom events together and you'll get there. but if there's anything about their behaviour that's off, that makes you uncomfortable... you don't owe that person anything.
ps. fandom events are the best way to make friends online in my experience, that and exchanging meta together.

How To Interact With Beta Readers - for Fanfic Authors
I wanted to make posts both for fic authors and beta readers, because I realized in several recent interactions that some helpful unwritten rules of fandom seem to have become lost to people who are new to it.
This isn't meant to be a call-out post against anyone to say 'you did it wrong!' (really, how could anyone be mad if you just didn't know any better), and there aren't even any definite rules for anything - but I just thought these things might be nice to know and helpful to share around. This first part will be @ the authors, the second part is @ the betas.
Asking for a beta reader
When you want someone to look through your fic, whether you ask in a tumblr post, @/helper in a discord server, in the notes of an already posted work or anywhere else, it's important to state both a) what the work that you want betad is and b) what you want from a beta reader.
The facts about the story.
The first most important facts about the story are a) length (in wordcount, as that is the most-used measurement for fanfiction - you can see it below the tags of an ao3 draft, or at the bottom left of a Word document), and b) rating and warnings. No, please don't just ask 'i have a fic for xy ship to beta' - that's nice information, but not helpful for someone who needs to decide whether they a) have the time to work on the length of fic and b) are willing to be confronted with the kind of content you have written.
In addition to that, you should of course also write what fandom, characters and dynamic it is about, because most beta readers are only willing to beta stories they would also usually read for fun. To make sure that the right people find the ask for a beta reader, you best target the post to them, so tag a tumblr post with the fandom and ship etc, and on discord share the request in a server or channel for the fandom, not an unrelated one.
What format is the draft in?
A word document you can send them via e-mail, a copy-pasted text in a direct message, link access to a google docs? Not everyone is comfortable with all of these methods, and you need to figure out one that works for the both of you.
Also, do you want the changes made directly in the text, in comment functions of the document, or as messages to you? If for example you send someone a Word document, and don't want them to change anything directly in your text, but they aren't comfortable working with the comment function there and end up writing you separate messages telling you what page and line the edits are one, that's going to be a lot more work for you to look through than you might have liked, so make sure to communicate it all beforehand and figure out a way that works properly for everyone.
What do you want from your beta?
'Well, to look over the story, duh?' but it's not that easy. Do you want the beta to:
- Only check for spelling and grammar mistakes in comments next to the text, No other suggestions at all because they would make you feel bad about your work/you don't have the time or want to spend the time on editing anything but honest mistakes/ any other reason?
- Grammar and spelling checks but also suggestions for word flow, repetitive words and phrases that could be changed and stylistic things like adding paragraph breaks (which are always nice to have for mobile reading)?
- [same as above] and also point out possible logic flaws and places where you might want to move a scene forward or back, or suggestions to things you could add to the story, with explanations as to why?
- [same as above] and also give suggestions for text you could cut that is unnecessary to the story or interrupting the flow of a scene in the opinion of your beta reader?
- Include nice messages as to what the beta liked best of the fic, or stay completely objective?
- Point out things they subjectively didn't like and would change about the story if they wrote it themselves, or not?
- Make corrections directly in the story, so afterwards you barely need to look at it anymore before you can publish it, or only give suggestions in comments or messages?
All of these are things some people welcome and others find incredibly annoying and/or hurtful! So make sure to communicate exactly what you are looking for. You don't have to do so in your initial public request, but once you have found a potential beta, you should text them the details before giving them access to your fic.
Do not be afraid of cancelling on a beta if you don't think it is going to work out! Whether because they aren't comfortable using the format you like to use, are a language teacher who can't stop correcting the long sentences you choose to keep as a stylistic choice, or just someone you don't vibe with, whether it's before or after they have started beta reading - be kind, but let them know that it just isn't working out, and that you would rather stop now before either of you wastes any more time and effort. If they want you to, you can tell them what you would have liked them to do differently, but don't ask someone to change how they are, and don't give unsolicited criticism, no, not even to a beta reader.
Decide on a time-frame
When are you going to send them the fic? Chapter by chapter over the next days, or the entire work? When do you want or need the work to be beta read? Is it for a challenge or gift exchange and needs to be finished on the same day, or can they wait for the weekend? Even if you don't have a specific deadline, when do you want them to send it back at the latest?
Working with a beta reader
After - or, if you are in for example a google docs at the same time, while - your beta reader does the corrections, you should look at them and decide which corrections you want to keep, and which to disregard. This is entirely your decision, it is your story, you don't need to feel bad if you don't take all of the suggestions for your work, even if you end up only correcting the spelling mistakes and ignoring everything else, it's your decision and this is fine.
If your beta gave suggestions for additional scenes or sentence changes, you can let them know once you have new text for them to correct, but keep in mind that they might no longer have time or energy to beta now, and don't be disappointed if they tell you this or don't reply. They already helped you, and you can always look for a new beta if you feel that your story still needs it.
Crediting your beta reader
Where are you uploading your fic, and how does your beta reader want to be credited? You best talk about this beforehand as well, as some betas only want to work on something when they will get the credit on a platform they are also on.
When posting on tumblr, it is usually expected to @ the person who helped you and write their url or tracked tag in the #s as well, but make sure to ask beforehand, as maybe they don't want other people to know they beta because they don't want to get swamped in work requests/ they don't want their url associated with for example explicit work/ they want you to tag a sideblog for the fandom instead of their main url.
On ao3, you can link to another author's dashboard or profile page (ask which one they prefer) in the notes by first going to the work text - rich text, writing their name, clicking the link symbol, pasting the url, going back to HTML text and cut-pasting the code to the note you want to have it in. You can do the prep work in a new work instead of your actual draft so you won't accidentally cut any of the work text. Again, ask the person beforehand whether they want to be linked there, or just want a nickname or their tumblr url credited.
You can also gift people works on ao3, and while this is in no way a requirement and most beta readers won't ask for it, just about everyone is happy to receive ao3 gifts! You can ask them beforehand if they want that, but as people can accept and refuse gifts on ao3 themselves, you can also let it be a surprise.
If your beta put a lot of work into your fic and wrote parts of it themselves, you can also make them a co-creator of the work on ao3, but only do this if you know and trust the person, as they will gain access to the fic and will be able to edit everything just like you.
Let me know if I missed anything, and I will update the post!
Tips for beta-readers themselves here!

Ok hot take (and besite I’m not coming for you here at all bc I know a lot of the time you dont talk about their drama or personal lives unless its something serious but) no doubt over the past few months greta blew up lol not a bad thing its just a fact. Before they went viral on tiktok for their snl performance a few months ago they had a fan base but nothing like this. To put it in perspective almost every show they did was like the troubadour. And like I said nothing wrong w new fans or more fans. Music is a universal experience and I’m glad they’re getting recognition. But I’ve noticed a lot of new fans (not all) are #1 younger and a little bit immature and #2 overly interested in their personal lives and the gossip and they take it waaaaaaaaay too far and that kind of behavior is what makes bands stop sharing their personal lives all together like pretty soon all the gfs are gonna have to be as private as jita and they arent going to talk about anything personal. For example, I cant say exactly how ik bc I dont want to get clocked but I’m a close friend of a good friend of the significant other of the girl who was walking out of gretallica with sam and the fandom really embarrassed themselves with that. Shes been a longtime friend and shes in a very healthy happy committed relationship and she actually had to take down photos of the guy shes with off her ig because people were harassing her so much and commenting stuff like “see she has a bf” and making tiktoks and some fans even went as far as to dm the guy and make him and her super uncomfortable and its not like she can delete her socials or go private bc shes a musician and publicity and social media is important to her job. But regardless of that situation (and it shouldn’t even matter if he WAS with her) do fans like that not think she doesnt say something to sam or the rest of the guys and they dont find out about that? And how weird it is? And how embarrassing it is for them when fans are acting like that to friends or loved ones? All I’m saying is ik a lot of new fans are young and excited and theres nothing wrong with that or being curious about the personal lives and relationships of famous people you like but there’s definitely a line and its been getting crossed A LOT lately and I just wish people would stop. Ive been a fan for years and them getting bigger is awesome, bigger shows, more followers, more people loving their music and their message. But a lot of it is bad too like this situation and some similar situations like when people thought josh was dating paige like sometimes the digging and harassing is too much and as a long time fan I can tell you honestly I can tell it’s starting to take a toll bc their vibe and how they interact with fans is starting to change a little bit and it’s disappointing to see and disappointing that fans who arent crazy dont get as good of an experience because of shit like that. My philosophy has always been like its ok to wonder but if they arent sharing it with you outright theres a reason so wonder all you want but dont dig, ask, harass, or make people uncomfortable to find out.
I agree. This is really starting to get out of control. I saw someone on tiktok who commented "What if hannah left that pic of her 'bf' up to cover up the fact she's dating sam now" and I even told that person that they were reaching and rumors like this can really damage her relationship with her bf if they're still together. I'm really disappointed with how the fans are treating people in the guys' lives. They won't want to interact with us anymore and it's gonna suck so much. We really need to just chill out and not make every little thing a problem. It's gonna burn us in the long run

Okay, so I would like help understanding how people think? I guess you could say that I am pretty practical and somewhat naive (my friends tell me that, but idk lol). I am also really really non judgmental. I don't get squicked by anything and I just float along in life, which is perfect for me because I am a big ball of anxiety and awkwardness. Sigh, love that life decided to put that shite on me. Anyways!
Now, I recently got Twitter (newish to fandom as well) and I have enjoyed it so far. However, I happened upon people who have edited JM out of a shot (I even saw someone completely black jimin out and ask if JK and Tae enjoyed that JM was gone. That gave me chills) and put whoever they want in that place with JK. They say that the photo had no romantic vibes, but then they put the person they ship with JK in JM's spot. Why and how do people think that way? Like I literally cannot understand how hypocritical they are being without realizing it? And trust me, I am trying to understand, but I don't know what to think about it.
I also would like to ask something about ITS? I have watched some episodes and I have heard people say that KM didn't interact a lot during this show. However, I noticed that this "vacation" of sorts seemed to be the boys trying to reconnect and get over some walls that had built up with time? And maybe because KM's relationship was great (and still is) during that time, they didn't really need to reconnect or tear walls down. If that makes sense? And that's why they may not have appeared together a lot on camera? Don't get me wrong, I think that they still interacted quite a bit (especially since they are know as the late night friends. I think with how they were, from what little I saw, always the last to wake they probably stayed up with each other. Doing what? Who knows and I won't speculate lol. I just think it's pretty freaking cute.) and their interactions definitely had a different vibe from the other interactions. Maybe I am seeing what I want to see but well I thought it sounded nice in my head. And just wanted to put it out there!
Have a nice day and stay healthy everyone 💜
Tkkrs (and all other ships) want what Jikook have even though they claim over and over again its bro shit. You will be hard pressed to find a jikook moment that hasn't been edited to fit another ship. They claim over and over again that there is nothing going on for JKK but as soon as they want to create a romantic photo for their ship... well you know who's photos and moments they use. Soooo can we all agree they think JKK does romantic things together then too? Because.... lol tkkrs are especially bad with the edits... such as all these that were originally jikook pics... lol someone I follow on Twitter does cursed edit Fridays and I snagged these from them 😂
Tumblr media
Which BAFFLES me because they have ALL these moments that are precious as heck and recent that they can use and fawn over!! The difference I think is that the vibes of the photo are different. One is romantic and one simply isn't.... they want what Jikook have and they simply are getting it from their own ship
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Jimin or Jungkook X BP members ones are pretty bad with the edits too... just block or mute accounts who do it if you don't want to see it anon... they will always be there unfortunately.
As for in the soop.... i think what we got was more than we what we didn't get....
Tumblr media
Jikook had many quiet and in the background moments during that show.... for example...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like you said, this trip was about them relaxing and bonding as a group and for duos who needed/wanted to air things out or spend time together when they hadn't been, for them to do that. Jikook spent nights together playing and cuddling and spent their days bonding with the rest of the members. They don't need to be forever attached at the hip in order to be "real" and you can't convince me that they didn't sneak into each other's cabins more than we saw.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They were so soft and sweet with each other that entire show. I loved it. Hopefully all the soft jikook ITS moments lets you all forgive me for starting this off with cursed tkkr edits!!! Lmao

do you ever get discouraged by social media? like the fact that a lot of interactions can never go beyond the surface level since you won't get to meet a lot of people irl or the fact that numbers seem to matter so much to how others perceive you? hope this isn't too heavy, just curious to hear your thoughts
hey, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this! but yes, i definitely know what you mean. social media can be a strange and disheartening space to be in because it's all about perception and not often about truly knowing someone. we all kind of have a version of ourselves that we put out there for the world to see, and it's not necessarily a completely false image, but it's also not the full picture, you know? and in a fandom space like this one, it's mostly built around a single interest or group of interest, which is great for surface-level bonding with people but not necessarily for a deeper relationship. so it can feel hard to build truly meaningful friendships sometimes.
i've been fortunate tho to meet some amazing people online that i now consider some of my dearest friends and closest confidants. it started with bonding over a shared interest, but then we found that we had more in common and started sharing things outside of that one interest and talking about our lives and supporting each other in both our hard times and good times. i feel really blessed and lucky to have these friends in my life, whether we ever get the chance to meet in person or not.
i'm not sure if you're actually looking for advice about this, but if you are, mine would be to just be kind and positive and enjoy interacting with people, and that may naturally lead to deeper friendship. that's how it's worked for me, at least. kinda depends on what your vibe is and how you prefer to interact online but i've made friends by sending asks/messages to people to let them know how much I enjoy their work and by hanging out in discord servers to chat about fandom stuff as well as general-interest stuff. might be a good place to start!
and as for numbers, yeah, that can be frustrating too! i'll be totally honest—i used to care way too much about numbers. at one point it lowkey became an obsession for me 😩 i'd be constantly checking to see how many followers i had and how much attention my posts were getting and i got too invested in watching the numbers go up and too frustrated when they would stagnate and most of all just too focused on comparing my following with other people's. it was especially bad on instagram bc everyone's follower count is on public display and art tends to get a lot more attention there, so i grew way faster and i also watched other people grow at like breakneck speed and leave me in the dust and i would get jealous,,,woof.
but there came a point when i realized that my focus on numbers was not healthy or enjoyable for me and it was making my fandom experience stressful and bitter rather than fun and chill. so i took a little break for a few weeks and really tried to gain some perspective with it all and it helped loads!! i mean i won't say i don't care about numbers at all anymore haha but they definitely don't have the same hold on me. my growth both here and on instagram has slowed down a lot but i honestly don't mind at all and actually may find that preferable haha. idk im just satisfied and comfortable where i am and what i find most fulfilling in fandom is my friendships and my interactions with other fans, not really the individual attention that I get. it's been nice to take the pressure off myself and not worry about performance and instead just kinda vibe lol. like i used to stress when I didn't post new art for a week, but now i just make stuff when i want to and let myself take my time and post when i'm ready instead of rushing out of some self-imposed sense of obligation.
i totally get people's desire to grow a bigger platform, especially creators who have professional ambitions, and it's awesome to celebrate with them when they hit milestones. but i hope that no matter where any of us are, we remember that our worth is not determined by our online following. and also that we are all just regular people with blogs! I think there's a tendency to treat bigger names in the fandom as like pseudo-celebrities or something (i've definitely been guilty of that ), but at the end of the day we're all just big nerds who like talking about a cartoon lol. it's nice when we can all just support each other and share content and discuss ideas and stuff without making people feel unduly pressured bc their following (like putting them on a pedestal, demanding a greater output of content, etc.) or making them feel lesser because of their lack of one. fandom is about community, not competition, and your contributions are valuable even if they get less attention that someone else's!
ok i feel like i've just rambled a lot, sorry lol idk if any of this was actually meaningful/helpful to you but i wish you the best and hope you feel less discouraged about this! 💜

An iconic duo sharing a moment while people IT'S TIME TO TALK ABOUT SEASON 3.
Tumblr media
As many of you may assume, this is definitely a Quidditch stan account. I adore the storyline, the characters are liveable and funny, Orion & Murphy & Skye are the true definition of "iconic", the dialogues are catchy, definatly my gallery is going to kill me one of these days for that and even if it's not free from the infamous plot holes and (in)famous presence of questionable people inside I'm fine with the final product.
So fine that I decided to restart again just for the Quidditch.
Lies, I have four account. Felix won't kill me if I spend most of my time with the Slyterin route in a Quidditch camp instead of, you know, earning house points.
The first two seasons had their strong sides (such as the characters's structure, a genuine good plot and an impressive mature way to talk about really huge things) such as their weaks (Ethan Parkin, Ethan Parkin, Ethan Parkin, way too much drama, SKYE, Rath'a logic that sometimes went on a vacation on the Maldives, Murphy and the zoom, Orion and his murderous Orionism and of course Penny that is everywhere at anytime) but season 3 is a big interrogative.
Is it good or bad?
Well, let me tell you: well but not so well?
Starting from the fact that this was supposed to be the season in which it is essential to test yourself to achieve a purpose and how SKYE HAS STOPPED BEING THE MANIAC OF THE VILLAGE(SCREAM!)
There are some weird stuff (no sense could just be a good synonymous but it fits better "boring") and honestly they are making me turn up my nose.
A lot.
The premises were objectively excellent and I will tell you, although they recycled the mechanics of "atomic bombs did much less damage than Erika Rath's bludgers" it must be said that the plot pretext was used well (hitting the captain it surely is a best plot twist than Skye's rips, it gave me a better impact and surely is a practical way to showing at the player what you are going to focus this year) because when the poor Orion made a presumably fatal fall (but it's the magical world of Hogwarts Mystery so let's avoid serious considerations) we could see that yes, Skye's development was a little bit too fast (with that genre of father with a certain mentality clarly the matter deserved a more concrete action on the material level of events but Skye remains human and the way of managing all that emotional tangle that the dear daddy had kindly offered her is justifiable since the method with which things are lived changes from individual to individual. Whatsoever if we consider that a conversation like the same that MC had with both father in daughter it's the deus ex machina of the TLSQ, show must go on, staying another second hearing Skye's existentialism's crisis could have ruined the mental stability of the palyers and we needed to move on for delevelopments it's fine. Rushed but fine. For who is Skye it can work) but effective thus allowing a relaxation on his part both towards Erika (best girl since forever) and towards Orion (some of their interactions are pure GOLD, the scene of the infirmary is one of these).
Above all seeing the team falter was a touch of class.
Funny how for Orion's sake everyone was ready to murder someone from the Rath's team and dying for the motherland while when the same thing happened to Skye nobody cared.
AT LEAST WE KNOW WHO IS THE TEAM'S FAVOURITE.
Good also the disciplinary measure from Madame Hooch (GO AND DO THE RESPONSIBLE ADULT THAT IS MISSING IN THIS GAME YES), nice to see Erika and Skye in the Great Hall doing the chores for detention "cinderella's style", good the secret-not-secret (as everything in this game DUH) and good that MC has embarked in his journey to obtain the leadership with your favourite partner in crime.
They give me "Mark Antony & Octavian" vibes.
Speaking of Skye and MC and since only now Murphy is remembering having a spoken role, let's not forget the former absolute protagonist of the scenes!
ORION AMARI.
Although the season had started in tragedy Orion in the lower chapters was the same good looking guy with an Italian surname, the most piercing of eyes and an enigmatic aura.
But since "enigmatic" perfectly rhymes with "problematic" it's been 7/8 chapters yet he disappeared with his superpowers and comes back just for doing screen time and for the fandom with all of his mysteries.
What happened to him?
Now, THAT was sa good point to start. Because you know everything about Skye, Murphy isn't exactly a closed book and Erika speaks for herself, but Orion?
What we know about him expect the old "I'm parent free?".
The fact that he lost hus spark and that maybe this could be a new opportunity to discover something else it's intriguing. He was never an authoritarian leader BUT aware and responsible of his position. And this made him perfectly functional to his role. Because he was the original guide of a team that needed someone who would put some limit on Skye and managed well all the dynamics that have happened in the span of 2/3 years.
Guys, he faced Ethan Parkin (a little parenthesis but IS ALWAYS AT HOGWARTS? That is, sooner or later he will start to work or do they get stuck in the air and bludgers in the ribs?) he and Rath had had babysitting Skye for the whole second season while MC was there like "MIND MY OWN BUSINESS, MIND MY OWN BUSINESS, MIND MY OW- OH DAMMIT!" and now things are getting complicated because we don't have many chances to talk to him and his rather arcanic tone does not help to clarify.
How MC will arrive at the objective (presumably to be a captain) is important. It's personal grow and characters NEED this. But Orion too is growing in a completely new direction. Don't overshadow him for ANOTHER Skye' drama prototype please.
What happened to him is not up to us mortals but we can do some hypothesis.
Orion, dear, WHAT HAPPENED?
You have a crush for Skye and you're thinking to visit a doctor? Did Snape attacked you? Ethan Parkin is (sadly) real? They served you some pineapple pizza? Italy won the Euro 2020 but you cheered for England?
DID YOU NOT RECEIVE THE SALARY?
Hopefully the triology of "yeah let's make a deja-vu and let's show to the players that we remember the whole 'heart/mind' stuff and that we are COHERENT' will end soon and we'll move on. Again.
Sigh, for now they were two pretty boring chapters.
Or should I say, the training with Andre, MC under the guide of coach Erika that singed "I'L MAKE A MAN OUT OF YOUUU" between a near death from fatigue (as if we were in The Sims), Skye doing what Skye usually do so screaming at people for (YOU HEARD THIS SCOMING) reasons and MC trying the hero pose as he/she was in Miraculous Ladybug were nice sketches.
BUT.
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ORION'S CENTRIC.
Give me a joy JC, and I'll may forgive you about all the messes that YOU crated in ALMOST four years.

@grippingtraverse Hello! Thanks for these wonderful asks!
Simplified, short answer: I don't think so! Not really. The framework and coherency of 'Person/Character of color' collapses when applied to Dabi (a fictional Japanese character in fictional sci-fiJapan, as written by a irl Japanese author and published in irl Japan) in context of the work, within the story and outside of it. There’s maybe something to be said about how Japanese manga characters are seen in America and how they’re treated by Americans, whether it’s believing them to be “white because they don’t look Japanese” or as part of treating a foreign work with Orientalist lenses in general, so I can understand a bit of the sentiment; but I was focusing on the in-universe context of the story, a watsonian perspective.
Plus, by those standards, Spinner is a 'character of color' as well. I'm not so much relating to him because he's a 'lizard/furry/scalie', I'm relating to him because he's also a 'character of color' - esp. because of how his hikkikomori/depression is portrayed in a way that I feel is different from American depictions - who's being further discriminated against for another trait. Of course, that's all my personal projection and reading; but I think I'm allowed that?
You've nailed it though! All you said about as far as the fantasy story is concerned, Dabi at the very least isn't discrimination against for an all-body animal mutant quirk. Maybe people think he's still a heteromorph of sorts because of his burns - I wouldn't be surprised! - but that's not an experience of his that's been shown, and the most someone had described him is someone with a 'patchwork face'.
As for Japanese fandom...! From what I've seen on twitter, they see what Spinner has experienced as discrimination, and have likened it to the racism that exist in our world, but *insert disclaimer about it being fictional*. As I do, when I call Dabi a *fantasy*-racist.
Not so much about the interaction between Dabi and Spinner, but related: What has been most surprising to me is the significance some in the Japanese fandom get from Chapter 302's Touya being on the computer, and the things he says. I hate to reveal it like this and not in a proper meta post, but that chapter gives them vibes that 13-year-old Touya, lacking parental attention, has been on the internet a bit too much looking for answers, and have wandered into a few questionable message boards.
Apparently the stuff Touya says about modern heroes and enlightenment books sound like repetitions of stuff he's read online which has a sort of 2ch/4ch feel to them lol. "Words of a 13-year-old who has surfed the net." There's one tweet that jokes he's been on woman-bashing threads; another that says Touya reminds them of a 'net-uyo' phase; yet another that wonders if things had gotten worse, he would've joined the CRC. This is, of course, their interpretations as well; but we can't all be making shit up when there's implications in the story that gets a bunch of people thinking this. These were the vibes I got well, though from a different angle.
(I'd link to the tweets, but given how I've apparently really pissed some people off with a mostly tongue-in-cheek 'headcanon' so much things got like this, I cannot trust people not to go harassing these twitter users, waking up one day to people yelling at them in a foreign language. I don't want to think it'll get that bad, but. Better not risk it.)
**I feel bad. I feel it's pretty low of me to use all this *vaguely gestures above* to try to fend off anime-fandom accusations that I'm racist, or I'm making shit up because I hate Dabi (I don't, actually) so much I need to, or that I'm a crazy shipper doing all this for fucking ship; but even if people won't listen, I don't think I can stand people thinking I'm weaponizing my real life identity that I already get stressed out over enough from navigating this absurd world, for character hate. I had to at least say my piece?
...This derailed towards the personal towards the end, and I apologize for that! But thanks again for the asks - they were super thought-provoking and I still had fun answering them, despite everything. Please have a good day! And Happy Halloween!
