“Wayward: to wander, to be unmoored, adrift, rambling, roving, cruising, strolling, and seeking. To claim the right to opacity. To strike, to riot, to refuse. To love what is not loved. To be lost in the world. It is the practice of the social otherwise, the insurgent ground that enables new possibilities and néw vocabularies: it is the lived experience of enclosure and segregation, assembling and huddling together. It is the directionless search for a free territory; it is a practice of making and relation that enfolds within the policed boundaries of the dark ghetto; it is the mutual aid offered in the open-air prison. It is a queer resource of Black survival.

“Waywardness is the practice of possibility at a time, when all reads, except the ones created by smashing out, are foreclosed. It obeys no rules and abides no authorities. It is unrepentant. It traffics in occult visions of other world and dreams of a different kind of life. Waywardness is an ongoing exploration of what might be; it is an improvisation with the terms of social existence, when the terms have already been dictated, when there is little room to breathe, when you have been sentenced to a life of servitude, when the house of bondage looms in whatever direction you move. It is an untiring practice of trying to live, when you were never meant to survive.”

Good Omens, Our Flag Means Death, Russian Doll, The Sandman, What We Do in the Shadows, Midnight Gospel, Jessica Jones, Reservation Dogs, Gentefied, and oddly enough iZombie - all shows that have kept me sane in an insane world. I especially love watching the support from Neil Gaiman himself for the writers strike. Everyone has those shows and movies that have kept them going, given them new perspectives on life, and even helped them understand their fellow humans better. Supporting working artists in all genres is important. Even those who claim to not be into art or books or film will still have some form of entertainment that shook their soul- or gave them hope at some point in their journey. Art matters. So do living wages. And we can have both.

The sun was aghast.

Right in my eye.

Sweat on my cheek.

My hair wild.

You said it was perfect.

If the dead can dream, I wonder if you sometimes dream of that night.

Where nothing but the new moon was our common companion.

Sometimes I wake up in that field by that back road where the dust never settles.

My research attempts failing me again.

The early sun always shining too deliberately.

I swear the four wheelers have tripled.

You would have hated that.

I crack open a can of coffee and set to work.

My research was always different from yours.

You researched life.

I researched grief.

Ever curious how much sadness the human heart can carry before it gives out.

How I never realized how deeply your own griefs had settled.

So I carry on alone in the desert, observing and watching.

I write and I wonder if any of it adds up in the end.

And how I wish I had one more chance to argue about the the difference between corvids.

How the crows still follow me.

And the ravens still taunt me.

How my heart will never quite settle.
