Spent 4 and a halfish hours creating an anki deck for @jpn-langblr ‘s あつ森 (Animal crossing) posts. It’s gonna help me play so much better in Japanese. So thank you so much for those posts!!
I’m also trying to figure out a way to mass send them to jpdb.io. I’m loving that website. If I can learn more, the more I can use that site to get media recommendations I’ll be able to understand well. I’m so excited.
I also decorated my anki and did more tweaking to my desktop today. Starting to look nicer all the time.
I was also watching Japanese AC videos yesterday. This girl is so sweet and makes such pretty islands. You should check her out! Her name is せなくまチャンネル
TFW you struggle with the meaning of a word until you *look* at the definition in 日本語…
減らす 〖 へらす・herasu 〗
from dictionary.goo.ne.jp; my own translation.
1) 数・量や程度を少なくする・suu/ryou ya teido wo s'kunak' suru・to reduce the quantity, weight or degree of ~.
2) 人をけなす・h'to wo kenasu・to disparage, belittle or dismiss someone... to reduce them.
compare with the english definition from takoboto.jp:
to abate, to decrease, to diminish, to shorten.
*sighs heavily*
i took one look at the most common meaning in goo's dictionary and understood instantly what kind of reduction was meant, just from the kanji:
数・number, quantity;
量・weight, mass (this one can also mean 'quantity', but i have already seen it in so many words related to weight);
程度・degree, grade, standard;
少・little, few.
moral of the story: once you've absorbed enough kanji to make sense of japanese-language dictionaries? use those for a clearer sense of word meanings. thank you for coming to my TED talk.
note: i first saw this kanji in reigen's line to hanako in chapter 1 / season 1, episode 1. with other kanji, it's read げん (gen):
『…本気のCコースだと霊を99%削減することをお約束します。』
...honki no shii kousu da to rei wo kyuu-juu-kyuu paasento sakugen suru koto wo oyak'sok' shimas'.
...and the all-out course C, which guarantees a 99% reduction in spirits.
My first post on this blog was about 4 years ago on July 12th, 2019! That's also around the time I started consistently using Anki. I still review flashcards on Anki nearly every day, but a lot about how I make my cards has changed.
Fields:
Front: The word/phrase, in simplified characters.
Traditional: At some point I decided I wanted to improve my recognition of traditional characters, so I added this field. If the simplified and traditional forms are the same, I leave this field blank.
Back: The definition, written in Chinese and/or English. I try to use Chinese as much as possible, but sometimes I have to resort to English or mix both languages. I didn't start using Chinese definitions until a couple years ago, so my older cards only have English definitions.
Example: Example sentences or phrases that I usually get from Pleco or some other Chinese dictionary source. I replace the word/phrase in question with underscores because I used to mimic cloze deletion-style cards. Now I mostly do it this way out of habit.
Pronunciation: The pinyin with numbers for tones (since that's easier to type on my laptop). I also include variant pronunciations. Above I have both the Mainland Chinese and Taiwanese standard pronunciations.
Alternate: If I notice in the dictionary that there is some alternate form of a character or word, I'll often include it here.
Card front:
Here's how the front of the card looks. I use a cursive-style font called Swim the Wolf to hopefully improve my ability to read others' handwriting. It also forces me to slow down and focus on the example sentences.
This template is configured so that if there is text in the traditional field, the card will be displayed with a "/" separating the simplified and traditional text. If the traditional field is empty, the "/" separator will not be displayed.
Card back:
And here is the back. When I started using Anki, I actually had the definition on the front and the word/phrase on the back. That was back when I only wrote the definitions in English. I would try to guess the Chinese word/phrase based on the English definition and Chinese example sentences (thus why I had to use underscores in the examples). At some point, it got unmanageable, so I switched to word/phrase on the front and definition on the back.
Here's the back template:
{{FrontSide}}
{{Back}}
{{Pronunciation}}
So there we have it, my Anki set up! My method for making cards has changed so much over the years as I've learned more about what works for me and as my goals have evolved. I don't use any add-ons or extensions (unless the added font counts), so you definitely don't need to do anything fancy to get a lot out of Anki. I hope you can glean some inspiration from this!
it's incredible the amount of grift you'll see in med student circles with every third douchebag running ads on "high volume high density notes.... our new service.. subscribe now" and instagram influencers with "i used to study a lot until i learned.. *base drop* two mind method suckem sluckem spaced repetition anki grind tuki technique... want to learn now? subscribe to m-"
you all provide no value to society and should seriously consider suicide. stop showing me these ads!!!!
Studying Vocabulary with Kanji Study app and Anki app
Hi everyone!
I just want to share with you this feature in Kanji Study app.
So recently, I started to incorporate studying vocabularies with using anki app. But the thing is, I just found out that you can directly add it to your anki app from Study Kanji app!
Select the vocabulary, and then click the + button on the upper middle part.
It will pop-up a choice in which deck you want to add the vocabulary. Select your preferred deck. (I want share a clip for this, but Tumblr only allows 1 video).
And here is the awesome feature...... As you study your vocabulary on your anki, you can click the vocabulary so it can redirect you back to the Study Kanji app!
This is very helpful feature, as you can study the Kanji, meaning, stps in writing, and also to check the example in a vocabulary or in a sentence.
It took me a long time to get here because of two things: being extra lazy, and university, but honestly laziness was like 90% of the reason. Anyway, I finally got back to studying and yeah, I now know a bit over 4 500 words, which may sound like a lot, but I still feel like I don't know enough, probably mainly because of me not actually practicing the language in any way other than Anki. I really need to start talking to people. Screenshots below. (Different this time as I'm on my laptop)
December 13th. Haven't been able to catch up with my planning yet, but I'm making good progress nonetheless. According to my planning I want to have finished lesson 30 by the end of the year, I finished lesson 23 yesterday. I did leave room for delays in my plan, but not too much. That way I have more reason to work on this course as much as I can so I can finish it on time. And remember, strive for progress, not perfection.
So frustrating that memrise is apparently removing community courses for good soon. I've spent hundreds of hours creating courses, one of which has had over 1,000 users, and a few that are just for me, and I've spent thousands of hours studying there.
I've exported everything I'm studying or have studying to anki. But man, I've been here before (when smart.fm got rid of user courses like a decade ago), and anki just isn't it. It's fine for basic vocab, but I've stared at the instruction for how to put pictures/videos/audio back in for ages and still not getting it (will try later when brain not fried.) Adding new cards is more of a pain. Massive courses (which was a lot of my courses) which I often reviewed in parts are more of a pain too - I think there is a way to separate them out but I haven't figured it out yet either.
Especially frustrating because I've just been getting into using it more again after not for awhile - partly because it's basically the only place to study Slovenian, and partly because I'd been working on a course for my profession with the idea I'd use it to review for the rest of my career.
hi!!! i went on a trip this week, but now i’m back on the grind :) i had planned to study on my trip, but that didn’t end up happening lmao. i don’t have classes until tuesday so i’ll make up for the days i didn’t study
i’m making a few anki decks for my histology class, so we’ll see how that goes! i’ve never used anki before but i’ve heard people say it’s good, hopefully it works for me too!
I want nothing more than to wear my favorite sweater and spray on my favorite perfume in ludicrous quantities and layer all my favorite lip glosses and go (equipped w an apple and a water bottle and a clear conscience) to my local library and sit outside w my textbooks laid out in front of me and study for hours on end while the nippy air shivers along my skin and reminds me I am alive breathing blood lumping able to engross myself in this moment. Then once I’m done studying I’ll take a walk through the park trail and sit on a rock by mossy tree roots while tight-knit canopies dapple the leaf-strewn ground around me and take to my notes app and journal about my feelings and goals and just life in general. When the shadows grow long and the warmth wears thin I will drive back home and curl up in bed and continue reading A Paradise Built in Hell by Rebecca Solnit to imbue my soul w much needed warmth. Also deep-conditioning my curls while studying tomorrow bc my curls need love. November will be kind to me I am so determined
