any headcanons / favorite things / silly ideas you have about dimivain? 👀👀 either romantic or platonic or everything in between, it's just always a delight to find a fellow connoisseur who loves these two trucks
[I'm gonna cite some cute little dialogues between them from Three Hopes, so tread gently if you're trying to go into the game absolutely blind.]
Okay these two make me deranged. Like as individuals they fucking rot my brain. Self-destruction in different genres; unwavering loyalty that's bone-deep; a view of themselves that's so damaged that there's no choice but to follow through on behaviours they think suit the worst they have to offer--and then they get SLAPPED TOGETHER and HOO BOY do they hurt!! Oh god the lads!! The dudes!! Agony!
I very much like to read romances that are devoted in nature. They're smitten, they're gone on each other, wrapped around each other like a braid of distinct colours; still their own entities, but woven together in a way that lets them both shine. These two? Oh boy. It's them. It's the dudes.
Because like. Hear me out here. Sylvain flat-out loves Dimitri. I take no criticism on this because there has always been evidence to that effect. And what's great about them is that it's just. Sort of always there? It's quiet but it's always there, showing in little ways the great way they care for each other. So allow me to compile a list of all my favourite dimivain moments.
Spoiler. It's all of them.
Dimitri before the Lions fuck off to tell Miklan to get good: "House Gautier is Sylvain's home. It would be nice of you to check on him as well."
Sylvain while everyone is trying to parse out Dimitri's breakdown: "I knew he'd been carrying the burden of that tragedy. I understand his thirst for revenge. His family and closest friends...all massacred right in front of him."
Dimitri feeling safe comfortable enough to say, "Will you never let that rest?! It was many years ago! Perhaps a good knock on the head will help you to finally forget about it..." and not have it be an outright threat/ruin the mood with Sylvain.
Sylvain being the one of Dimitri's only friends to use his name regularly (interchanged with "Your Highness")
And it's so goofy but like the fact that their dynamic shows in part in their support when Sylvain is all "Relax, Your Highness. Relax. I'll sort this whole thing out, real easy. [...] You just wait right there, and I'll fix everything."
and the VINDICATION i feel whenever I think about their Three Hopes interactions. Oh god. Spoilers are in tiny text
Sylvain, post-chores: "See, even I can be useful sometimes! I probably could've gotten away with doing less, actually ;)." Dimitri, post-chores: "I've never once doubted your utility, Sylvain :( Do not be so quick to belittle yourself."
Sylvain, in-battle: "That's our king! ;) Wherever you go, we'll be right there with you." (THIS ONE . . . HOO BOY IT FUCKED ME UP. I had to pause the battle and set down my damn controller.)
Also the sheer difference of Dimitri's Sylvain introductions between Hopes and Houses gljdflkgj like "He's a good person, even if he's a bit of a whore" and "he's a slut, and he's smarter than all of us combined. i would know" is just such a wild range for talking about someone for the first time that I'm forced to confront how well Dimitri really does know Sylvain.
Sylvain reminding Dimitri to stay calm when they march on Enbarr <//3
The AGONY of "Striking down the Empire is my offering to His Highness."
Everything about the Tailtean Plains to be honest. Like getting to Dimitri inherently means going through Sylvain first. Sylvain is a Gautier, at the end of the day, and he does it well; the crown doesn't walk into hell without a Gautier watching their back, picking off the threats that aren't close enough to be an immediate danger.
And, of course, my favourite: "I don't feel like I can just forget all the awful stuff he's done...But if His Highness is owning up to his past, and trying to move forward...I figure I can give him that chance. We've been friends since we were kids. I'm gonna be there for him all the way to the end." (i teared up reading through this on the datamine. they're fucking insane. i love them.)
I mentioned this in the tags of my recent post, but the dynamic between House Gautier and House Blaiddyd is an untapped gold mine, at LEAST as far back as Lambert (though that may be expanded upon with Three Hopes, if word on the street is to be believed). Gautier's responsibility is to protect and defend; Blaiddyd's duty is to bear a crown worth protecting. They're so tightly woven that it makes me dizzy. Sylvain, for all intents and purposes, is a defender. He's cited to have come in in clutch and saved his friends over and over again, and that combined with his complex relationship with his destiny as margrave/his destiny that's only as awful as he lets it be lends itself to a man that fights for one thing and one thing only: what he loves.
What's also wild is that like. Plonk them into any AU and it simply works. Tortured souls in the form of overly empathetic gentleman and self-deprecating clever manwhore is just so universal. Organized crime is a personal favourite of mine; I'm also partial to a sugar daddy AU. Absolute TRAVESTY that there seems to be only one fic per each of those AUs for these two. I will be rectifying this personally. Like they're so elegant in their own ways but they're so STUPID that I want to see them love the worst and best in each other.
These two have such intimate understandings of each other that jealousy is just. not a factor at all. Sylvain will make some dumb flirtatious comment and Dimitri will just wait patiently for a tender cheek kiss he knows is coming. An apology, an I love you, a thank you for not turning away at the hard-to-break habits. Sylvain reads books whenever Dimitri wakes them both with a particularly bad nightmare. Sometimes he'll read them aloud; others he'll be utterly silent so Dimitri can focus on things like their breathing and the wind.
It's less that they're little and big spoon and more . . . interwoven forks. There's never a night where they don't want to both hold and be held, so limbs are all over the place and faces are buried into whatever warmth they're closes to, but it's so good. It's so them.
Dimitri calls Sylvain beautiful--thanks him for trusting such careless hands with a heart so tender. Sings his praises and kisses him softly and fumbles the cheesy romantic stuff, but it's so much sweeter for it. Sylvain cries sometimes, but it's a good cry.
Sylvain does not leave Dimitri's side, even when his psychosis eats up the better part of his week, or the stress of trying to negotiate peace wears him down. Dimitri will try to bury himself into Sylvain's very soul, because that's always where he'll feel safest. Sometimes that manifests in sexual intimacy; sometimes it's just Dimitri pressing them together, head to toe. Their similar heights and builds are good for it.
Dimitri wears an eyepatch whose stitching is Gautier-teal. Sylvain accepts a gift from the blacksmiths specially employed by House Blaiddyd to craft weapons to withstand their strength; a promise that everything in Dimitri's power will be used to protect Sylvain as Sylvain's protected him. It's peacetime now, but a child of Faerghus knows a weapon better than most know the pen. It's a lovely gift regardless, and a little better than a dagger with the rising sun.
Byleth marries them, and the ceremony is limited to the Lions and whichever of the Academy's students/staff are free. Sylvain cracks jokes the whole way through, even when they both start crying, and Dimitri is so annoyed and so in love and when they tie together little ribbons of their regions' colours, cutting the newly woven rope in two to tie around their wrists, he whispers a quiet vow only for Sylvain's lips, his heart.
Once it becomes public knowledge that the Saviour King and his margrave are more than allies and friends, they decide to adopt a pair of siblings who were orphaned by the war. Neither really thinks themself incapable of being a good father, but they both have a fair deal of hangups over it. Sylvain knows he has to usher in peace, but teach their children when it's right to refuse to budge. Dimitri imparts to them the knowledge of both bodily and mental strength, all without forfeiting their heart.
Anyway. It's 4AM. I've been thinking about them for three hours. I'll probably wake up with more thoughts of them but this is all the dimivain word vomit I can manage in one go. Thank you so much for the ask though! I love thinking about them in any capacity.

Hi! First, i love your writing🥺 Now to the point. How about felix, sylvain and dimitri pinning after the female reader? We are basically yeeting ingrid and placing a fem reader instead😂 Like, they are childhood friends and the three of them have had a lovestruck for her since they were kids? And now they just end up fighting for her love or smth? Either hdcns or an scenario is fine! You can pick whichever you wish! However if you dont want to write this req please dont feel forced to! Love u🥺
Thank you so much!! 🖤 And yes, you got it! Bye Ingrid LMAO 😎😎 I write pre timeskip wayyy better so I’m gonna just say that reader is 18 (i don’t write NSFW or anything but age is still a thing lol) so that they’re in between the ages of Dimi + Felix & Sylvain and it works out, hope you don’t mind! I love you too anon 🥺
- Dimi is probably the first one to catch feels when they’re kids! Felix does too but he’s kinda just like wtf is this??? until someone teases him about it. Sylvain is quite ✨special✨ with romance but I think he’d be inclined to trust you a lot more because you’ve known him since you were teeny tiny before you even knew wtf a crest was! So he probably also catches feels when you’re kids but then he goes through his whole girl phase SIGH
- None of them realize their predicament until they all see you again at the officer’s academy together. I wouldn’t say they’re super obvious about it, but they’re teenagers (well Syl isn’t but shhhhh) who all like the same person so they’re going to pick up on each other’s crushes while reader remains ignorant. It’s not an issue that needs to be addressed immediately, but they’re all watching each other cautiously.
- Syl would have a massive head start on flirting with you, but he’s faced with the big issue that you don’t believe he’s being genuine and brush him off. Felix is constantly challenging you to duels to get close to you and also have alone time with you, although the other 2 will occasionally ruin his plans and insist on joining. Ah man bby Dimitri would probably come across as a little overbearing because he’s very protective of you and is constantly offering to do things for you. He’s just a mother hen that’s whipped for you and doesn’t know any other way to express it!
- When it comes to the 4 of you sitting together at lunch or in class, Sylvain is the worst. He’s very aware that his competition is far less bold than him, and so he’s making sure he’s always closest to you. Will squish as close to you as humanly possible HE WOULD DEADASS PUT YOU IN HIS LAP IF HE COULD 😭 If he puts a hand on your thigh or an arm around you it’s a wholeass declaration of war.
- Felix will likely become much more protective which may cause a lot of yelling at you for being careless or weak, but really he’s just so worried! To ease his mind, he’ll help you correct your mistakes himself (which has the added bonus of getting really close to you and occasionally lowkey holding hands when he adjusts your grip). Around other people, especially Dimitri and Sylvain he’ll be evidently sweeter to you to get the message across. A blended mix of jealousy and concern will make him very protective of you around the other two. Dimitri is not getting within 5 feet of you while guard dog Felix is around.
- In the Blue Lions the tension in the air is so thick you could cut it with a knife everyone is thoroughly confused but frankly just sick of it lol. Felix glaring at Dimitri? That’s totally normal but Dimitri is doing it back AND Sylvain is added to the weird stare off- wtf happened?? Byleth would have to talk to them after class and be like guys what in the goddess’s name happened 😭 They’ll all give a vague answer that doesn’t give away that it’s about you and each one of them has a jab at the others to shift the blame..please find your chill lads !
- At this point everything gets a little bit needier because they’ve all had this pent up yearning but have been blocked by the others. (If you’re ok with it) Sylvain will just randomly peck you on the cheek or your forehead when he sees you and you’re just like LOL ok ✨typical Sylvain✨ But when you sit next to him at lunch or in class he’s started very tenderly holding your hand under the table and you’re like huh ok that’s a little odd. If Dimitri is on the other side of you he will carefully take your other hand in retaliation. Felix will probably give in and do the same but he’ll snatch your hand a lot more aggressively and look away from you with a scowl and a blush.
- Dimi and Felix are both touch starved AF and would very much appreciate cuddles or any physical contact. If you’ve reacted positively to everything thus far, Dimitri will slowly start to bite the bullet and initiate affection because he wants it so bad. Any time you touch Dimitri, he gets sappy and lovey af and will express his adoration in hopes that you’ll keep giving him affection. Felix would never upfront ask for affection but he just kinda sits really close to you and glares at you with a little pout and you will have to realize that this is Felix language for ‘it is a crime that you aren’t cuddling me rn’.
- Obviously Sylvain gets lots of physical contact with women but I don’t ever see it as holding affection yknow?? Like yeah he spends a night or two with chicks after them crest babies™️ (i cannot take myself seriously this sentence is so funny-), but I don’t really think that they’ve done actual cuddling or casual displays of affection like petting someone’s hair because they likely don’t care too much for Sylvain and will just do the bare minimum. So in a way, Sylvain is also starved of affectionate touches and he would very much appreciate the little things that no one else has done for him. It’s new and scary for him to actually seek romantic attention, but he’s still pretty bold, just not very tactful when it comes to you lol. If you’re sitting by yourself on a bench he will not hesitate to sprawl himself out on top of you with his head in your lap and stare up at you with an innocent grin. Is also lowkey not embarrassed to whine or pester you?? His reputation is pretty hopeless at this point so what does he have to lose by sitting behind you in class and poking you while dramatically whining about you not paying attention to him?
- Attention is a huge deal to Sylvain. It’s one of the main things he’s looking for when he randomly flirts with people at the monastery. He can’t handle being ignored and that leads him to often seek many girls at once so that he always has attention when one is busy. But when it comes to you he finds himself in deep shit because once he’s gotten a little bit from you, everyone else seems minuscule and with others he only receives a mere fraction of the satisfaction he gets from being with you. So he’s gradually allotting more and more time to you until he hardly talks to any other girl. But Sylvain is used to being the one that everyone wants more of, so when he finds himself in the shoes of the smitten women that piss him off, he’s plagued by the worry that you’ll think he’s overly needy. So he comes to seek validation from you too. If he can just get you to comb your fingers through his hair or give him a kiss on the cheek then he can renew his confidence in trying to court you.
- Dimi is somewhat similar but for different reasons and in different ways. Dimitri has practically no experience with romance so he’s extremely smitten and has an overwhelming desire for the affection you give him that he’s never had. But he’s painfully aware of how extreme his feelings are in comparison to any other couples he may have seen at the monastery, and he’s terrified that he’ll scare you away if he expresses exactly how much he yearns for you. So Dimitri is always very visibly holding back much like he often holds back his strength. Dimi will do anything for you or with you, but you have to initiate it so he can be certain that he’s not smothering you. On days where he’s extremely lovey and never wants to let go of you (which is kind of often lol) he will constantly ask if you’re sure that he’s not bothering you. He is just so horrified at the thought of messing up whatever it is you have.
- Felix will be very easily overwhelmed by you, so it’s much better if you wait to cuddle up to him until you can both go to one of your rooms. It’s not that he doesn’t want to be touched, he does, but his feelings for you make him way too vulnerable for his liking, so he’s not going to want anyone else around. Felix is still Felix and he goes off to take out his feelings in the training grounds every free day, but has started occasionally coming to your room when he’s done for the day and receiving his required cuddle time away from prying eyes. He may have accidentally fallen asleep with you a couple times..
- You’ve probably snuck in to sleep in Dimi’s room on occasions when he’s dangerously sleep deprived. The man, the myth, the legend Dedue would definitely help sneak you in because he knows it does Dimi a lot of good. Dimitri is able to fall asleep with you practically on top of him in his grasp. Feeling your heartbeat close by and your hair beneath his head and hearing you breath peacefully is enough to ground him from his fear of losing you too. He’ll still have nightmares, trauma is a bitch, but when you’re there you can bring him back down and he’ll eventually be able to fall back to sleep (which he typically can’t do alone). It’s not a perfect night’s sleep, but it’s enough to keep Dimi functional and that’s what you’re there for. He’ll thank you a million times and unnecessarily apologize for the inconvenience, please do what you can to reassure him that he’s not a nuisance to you.
- SIGH Sylvain, this god damn silly little goose, is extremely distressed by his feelings for you and even moreso by his developed neediness. It honestly kinda scares the shit out of him to realize he’s whipped for someone and at a loss for a way to ask you out. He’s used to having that power, to have someone’s feelings in the palm of his hand where he can do anything he wants. Genuinely trying to figure out how he would court someone is a frightening new thing for him and he’s suddenly on a playing field where he doesn’t have his experience or his power to shield himself with. So he reverts to his old ways to try to get a handle on his fear and have his confidence boosted back up. But of course, Syl still wants all the attention he can get from you so you so he spends all of the day with you, then does his other girl bullshit at night! It doesn’t go as smoothly as planned though..Sylvain is used to being yelled at by crying girls, but it hasn’t gone unnoticed that he ignores them all day and drops by whenever he feels like it, and he ends up getting in some pretty nasty arguments that do not help his already vulnerable state. So it’s like 2 AM and Sylvain’s feeling like a sorry sack of potatoes and just wants to be held by someone and talk until falling asleep in their arms. And there’s only one person who Sylvain wouldn’t mind being open with and who could provide him genuine comfort..and you’re the lucky winner of the ‘Sylvain on your doorstep at 2 AM’ lottery!! Unless your sleep schedule is wack you’re gonna be all groggy like hey uhh wtf Syl??? And that is how the occasional nights that Sylvain falls asleep in your room happen!
- If the 3 of these scenarios interfere with each other ummmmmmmmm no they didn’t 😳
Ok! That’s where I’m leaving off because I don’t want to try to write endings with you picking one of them it just makes me kinda sad LMAO. Bro omg it’s the return of the ridiculously long Allister fics she do be goin a little insane though 😳 But for real I’ve been gradually adding to this for like?? a week? And I just kept picking cute relationship milestones or whatever in my walnut brain and writing a point for each of them so that the 3 of them are equally written. So it might not line up perfectly but I hope you like it!!

Further Notes: And the long awaited chapter is here! Four chapters after this are left, are you ready?
You watched Sylvain from across the room. You had told Mercedes, who came to check up on you, that you weren’t feeling too well that day and was going to skip classes earlier today and she simply agreed and wished you a happy rest. None of the other Lions were particularly concerned about Sylvain’s absence, it wouldn’t have been the first time this semester when it occurred after all. But now that your hands were free from their snares, your mind wandered back to the night before only more often, and it drove you insane.
What did he mean by that?
Well, of course you knew. It wasn’t the first time you’ve heard him say it, but for some reason it felt different. You weren’t dense. You knew that boy caught feelings for you, and he caught them hard. But you truly didn’t feel the same—
Wait, actually?
You relaxed in your seat in the classroom and watched him yammer on to Felix. Would being in a relationship with Sylvain be that bad? Then you watched as another female student blew him a kiss, to which he winked back at her as if it was just a reflex and you scoffed to yourself.
“What was I even thinking?” You rolled your eyes and opened your book. But some strange thought compelled you for a moment and you shut your book and looked back to who you thought was your older brother figure and your best friend and huffed slightly. “Well…”
You knew Sylvain, you knew him well. If you looked past the obvious flirt, he’s actually a very deep person with very deep insecurities. He’s a lot smarter than people chalk him up to be, and truthfully you don’t think he’s be a bad boyfriend, but he would have to be as hooked to you as you are to him, otherwise you’re just set up for heartbreak.
Now you know Sylvain’s got it bad for you, you didn’t miss the way he blushed, you just elected to ignore it, but at the same time that’s just Sylvain. He gets hooked on one girl, then it dies out like a flame in the rain. You’re very close with him, that much is fact, and you’re really not sure if risking your near sixteen years of friendship is worth a relationship. But there lies the possibility that he is that infatuated with you, but now it’s the argument of is it love or is it infatuation, because both are two very different things, to your understanding. If you were to ask him, truth be told, he’d probably say they’re the same thing.
Now for a brief lesson on the whims of love, as presented by Professor Byleth to his colleagues. The origin of ‘Love’ and the origin of ‘Infatuation’ do stem from the same roots, they start in the heart, but it is where that feeling travels to that differentiates the two. As many might protest against, infatuation travels to the head, while love travels to the rest of the body. Infatuation is to be defined as the being obsessed with the simple idea of being in a relationship, and in this case that is a majority of Sylvain’s feelings in general. Where as love is something that encases one whole, it is the simple deciding factor that allows you to put the other before yourself when necessary, but at the same time to prioritize yourself when you must.
To bring this back to your situation, you know Sylvain enough to know that the boy is constantly hooked on the idea, but never on the truth. You trust Sylvain, you really do, after all, it is him you go to before the others most of the time, he has the best insights once he drops his dumb-jock facade and decides to become an actually decent guy.
“Um… (Name)?” Dimitri tapped your shoulder and you are pulled out of your in-depth analysis.
Dimitri.
Whenever you think you’ve gotten over him, he just has to show his dumb face in front of you in his dumb school uniform with that dumb blue cape and his dumb blue eyes and you feel yourself falling for him all over again. You feel bad for Sylvain, he had to sit through you talking about Dimitri over and over again for years, you thought about apologizing, but whenever you gave a hint to, Sylvain would reassure you that it was fine.
Dimitri is such an enigma, let that be known. You had known him for years, thanks to your mother, and you have seen his rises and falls and everything in between. But the question now arises, is what you feel for Dimitri love or infatuation?
“Oh, hey, Dima, what’s up?” You force a smile on your face and he eyes you suspiciously.
“I was wondering if you could help me out with bow training?” He asked.
Oh, you almost forgot about that. Dimitri’s strong proclamation of switching to bow skills, one you wouldn’t have seen coming from a mile away, but one that wasn’t a horrible surprise. You nodded.
“Sure, I’ll try to get you a silver bow so it doesn’t break again,” you laugh. And there’s another thing that was on your long list of ‘WHY I LOVE DIMITRI.’ It’s the honesty, the way you could read his feelings on his face. The first thing you noticed was how the tips of his ears would turn red first before the rest of his face did, then he would do that nervous side glance that would send your heart racing. Sometimes you were afraid that people would be able to tell how whipped you were for the young prince because, truth be told, the odds of you and Dimitri being end game were short, very short. He’s a prince and you’re a commoner who just happened to be lucky enough to be a part of the lives of nobles, it was just not meant to be.
You would describe your story as a complicated romantic plot. But the boy behind you would describe it as a sob story. As frivolous as he seems, Sylvain is in no way an idiot. He knows your feelings for the Prince, and he knows Dimitri’s feelings for you, there’s no way he could ever stand a chance against the crown prince of Fhirdiad, and in your heart, your relationship has plateaued at ‘Sibling-Like,’ a placement he wasn’t happy with, but one he was willing to maintain.
“Honestly, Sylvain, look at you, you’re pathetic,” Felix scoffs. “You’d might as well just tell her how you feel so you could stop looking like such an oaf when she does as much as breathe.”
“It’s just that we’ve been friends for so long, I don’t think I should say anything,” Sylvain kept his carefree smile on his face, but his words were somber. “Plus, her and Dimitri have a bond we could never have.”
“I don’t think so, but alright,” Felix shrugs. “I’ve had enough of your moping, take action or I will for you.” Sylvain blew a piece of his hair out of the way and slumped his shoulders.
“Yeah, I hear you, Felix,” he groans. The door to the classroom opens and Byleth walks in, tomes and papers stacked in his hands. He tosses them on the table and turns to the class.
“I hope you’re all ready for your first mission as students. Bandit removal, make sure your weapons are ready and repaired, we move out in a few hours,” he instructs. The class affirms his questions collectively and next thing they knew it, they were at the drop-off location, getting in formation.
This wouldn’t be your first time going against enemies, which is sad enough to say. But the life of a commoner isn’t one of luxury. When you weren’t with your mother in the castle, you were with your father at home, home being a small cottage in the middle of the woods since your father was a paranoid maniac.
It sounds cruel, but there’s no other way to put it. From a young age you had to do things for him, and that included making sure people who were hellbent on killing your father, claiming that he was “cursed” or whatever new word they cooked up for him, weren’t a problem. When did it start again? You had to have been ten at least, right?
Oh, goddess above, you just realized how bad that sounded.
Let’s set something straight, you’ve never killed anyone! Gods no. You just scared them away, is all, enough for them not to come back to hurt your father.
Now the person who taught you how to use your sword in the first place was your father, before the “Goddess please take my life away as well as my wife and child” blubber he spouted out, in fact, he was also involved in the Monastery’s defenses, until he was untimely “retired” as Seteth put it.
Another unknown fact to most, actually you didn’t recall ever telling your friends either, you had connections in the Monastery even before you were admitted to the Officers Academy, mainly for fear of being disparaged since you were technically only let in because of “connections,” and goodness how you hated using that word but it was all that was there to use. As far as your classmates know, you got in because of good grades.
Which you believe would have been right, if only you actually went to school.
# Commoner Things.
Regardless, Dimitri and Ingrid’s books always kept you as educated as you had to be.
But let’s get back to the story.
“(Name), I want you and Felix to work together for this battle,” Byleth instructs. “You two should play off of each other well, focus on bow skills.”
“Right,” you nod. You link your arms with Felix. “Guess you’re stuck with me, Lix.”
“Great, now I have to babysit while I’m in battle,” Felix rolls his eyes and you smile.
“I feel like I never partner up with you anymore! What’s the worst that could happen?” You shrug.
“With your luck? Murphy’s Law is your best friend, (Name).”
“Don’t be like that, don’t worry, I have your back!”
That exchange was ten minutes ago.
You and Felix have been pushed back and essentially cornered by the enemy bandits, and the rest of the class was on the whole other side of the battle field.
But it wasn’t your fault! Felix was the one who was cocky enough to think he could handle the west side by himself, and you had to follow him because otherwise Byleth would have failed you. So now the both of you were hiding behind a rock, out of Vulnaries, and on the brink of exhaustion. And since the Professor wanted you to focus on your bow skills he may or may not have confiscated your sword, and Felix was being a dick and not letting you use his.
“How many arrows do you have left?”
“Uh… six.”
“How many enemies are left?”
“Uh… also six.” You hold your bow close to you and Felix holds both of your shoulders.
“Look, (Name), I always make fun of you and say you will never amount to anything because you are a commoner—“
“Geez, Lix, I get it, I’m worthless, chill out.”
“But right now this is me telling you that you can and you will one shot all those enemies because otherwise we will both die out here.”
“Well maybe if you gave me your sword—“
“It’s broken, (Name), you really think I’d give this to you and toss you out there? If Sylvain doesn’t kill me, Dimitri will tear my innards out.”
“Right. Okay,” you nod in tiny. “I dunno, Lix, my hit rate is one to six.”
“You can do it, I know that better than the others,” he shakes you slightly.
“Okay, okay, but if I die I am so convincing the Goddess to let me come back down so I can strangle you.”
“Deal. Now go kill those bandits.”
“Right, okay, right,” you nodded your head again.
Quick reminder, you’ve never killed anyone.
Also quick reminder, you don’t specialize in bow.
Also another reminder, last time you killed a fly you cried.
Okay, good luck, (Name).
You stood up and drew your bow back, focusing on the closest bandit, taking a deep breath in, you adjusted your stance, remembering Claude’s words, and as you exhale, you release the arrow, following it’s trail and hitting the enemy, leaving him out of commission.
“Oh gods, I did it. I actually did that… I am so sorry, I am so so sorry,” your expressions shifted dramatically. Felix poked his head out from behind the rock.
“See what did I tell you, (Name)? Go fuck some shit up!”
“Watch your language, Frauldarius,” you draw your next arrow, a new found confidence setting in you, and aim for your next target. Maybe you’re imagining it, but there was something different about how you were using your bow today, something more intense, to put it simply. Did arrows really fly that fast? And was a wooden bow really that strong enough to eliminate the enemies in one hit?
All questions for later.
Finally there was one last bandit and, using the same technique as the previous bandits, you took your shot.
And missed.
“You missed?!” Felix ran both hands through his hair.
“I told you I was a beginner!”
“So you miss your target the one time you shouldn’t miss?!”
“Oh shut up, Felix, you’re lucky I got the first five!”
“You two are really arguing, at a time like this?” The bandit halted in his tracks.
“Yeah we are, fuck off,” Felix grumbles. You glare at the bandit, grab Felix’s broken-ass sword, and drive it into the bandit’s chest.
“Don’t fucking interrupt me!” You growled. “Anyways, I don’t understand why you’re so unreasonable, Felix, you don’t see me complaining about your attitude 24/7.”
“That’s because you’re weak.”
“Say that again to my face!”
“I did!”
And the argument continued for the Goddess only knows how long and it finally ended when the Professor found the two of you and explained that the battle had been long over, then after a thorough scolding for worrying the entirety of the class, the two of you just decided not to talk to one another. Although you did find some joy in seeing Ingrid nag Felix about his broken sword, going off about how he should have checked before their very important first mission. But then your joy ended when she turned her anger towards you and lectured you on how you should have some respect for the people who were older than you, and also how you shouldn’t argue in battle since it’s “distracting” to the other classmates, but how could it be “distracting” if it was only you and Felix?
Either way, you had a bitter attitude for the rest of the week, and none of the Blue Lions were brave enough to go up to you and even make small talk.
And it wasn’t until Friday night when Felix decided to man up and go up to you.

sylvain + his s/o taking a hit for him
anon asked: “sylvain if his s/o took a hit for him on the battlefield?”
a/n: himbo sylvain hours boys... i guess this is me making up for killing byleth in the last sylvain hc OOP !!! --mod touko
[wakes up in a cold sweat] sylvain/byleth/felix poly.... [goes back to sleep]
ailell was hell on earth. the molten lava across the grounds made it hard for people to traverse, and on top of that you were surrounded at all sides by the kingdom army who now allied with the empire. you tried to carve a path with your creator’s sword to get to the general, perhaps that would put a stop to this grotesque battle, but no openings were to be found. it seemed there was to be no respite, until judith arrived with her forces, and you silently thanked the goddess.
that thanks was quite short-lived though, as you glance across the battlefield and see sylvain and felix, taking on way too many enemies for the two to handle. you curse to yourself, no doubt felix had led the two into the fray and sylvain followed, not wanting his best friend to be hurt. sylvain casts healing spells for felix and magic spells against the enemy until he’s exhausted, only then does he pull out the lance of ruin. you rush to their aid, knowing that if sylvain was out of healing magic they would soon be overwhelmed.
you shout for sylvain over the sticky heat and loud sounds of metal scraping against metal on the battlefield, but he doesn’t seem to hear. continuing to fight your way over to his side, you see a lance cavalier barrel towards the two. your feet work on muscle memory, ducking and jumping over both friend and foe to save him. as you reach him, the cavalier throws a spear steady and true towards sylvain’s back. reacting fast, you jump up off the ground, whipping the sword of the creator at him. it pierces through his chest, felling the enemy in one hit. it’s only when your feet hit the floor and you collapse that you realize the spear has also hit you too, piercing through your stomach through the little armor you wore there. you gasp, coughing up blood, and finally sylvain sees you.
he dismounts his horse quickly, and yells for help, gods he wish he hadn’t used all his magic on felix, he was such an idiot. your eyes flutter shut, head lulling back weakly as he fights the urge to pull the spear out. thankfully, it didn’t pierce all the way through, but it was still deep enough that you could easily bleed out. no, this wasn’t the time to think about that. sylvain forces the bile that was rising in his throat and starts to work on patching you up without magic, anyone that came near the two of you instantly being cut down by felix.
it had been a few days since you had been admitted into the infirmary. after the battle, sylvain and felix had carried you limp body to the wounded cart, setting you down gently as mercedes and manuela worked quickly to remove the spear and to stop the bleeding. you were still out cold, despite all the wonders of healing magic you had still lost a lot of blood, and there were still other complications that could come from a gruesome injury like the one you had sustained.
sylvain crawled his way beside you, holding your hand and whispering you reassurances that everything would be okay. it was more to reassure himself of that fact, however.
they had kicked him out of the infirmary as soon as they realized he wouldn’t be any help because his magic was drained. he felt utterly useless, slumped against the wall as hot, angry tears rolling down his face. he was weak, it was because of him you were hurt. he was supposed to protect you and now?
sylvain didn’t move much for three days, only getting up when ingrid would drag him to the dining hall to eat something. no one had ever seen him look so dull, the mask of youthful carelessness shattered as he was forced to face the reality that you might be dead, and because of him no less.
“still blubbering like an idiot?” felix jabs, looking down at sylvain who is still slumped against the wall. “you know they’re alive in there. quit acting like they’re dead already. it’s pathetic.”
“thank you, felix for your kind words.” he says bitterly, and felix crosses his arms.
“i’m not going to take pity on you,” despite his words, he does feel sympathy for his friend, otherwise he wouldn’t have been here. he had never seen sylvain look as lost as he did these past few days. “they’re strong, if you think a spear could end their life, then you’re more stupid than i thought.”
“yeah... i know all of that.” sylvain swallows his anxiety, “the moment it happened i just couldn’t stop thinking about the worst. what if they died and it was my fault... felix what would i do then?” sylvain casts his gaze to the wall, “i can’t live without them.” his voice is small and sincere. felix, for a moment, is taken aback, sylvain had never been serious about anyone before, so this confession made him wonder if he was hearing things right.
before he got the chance to answer, manuela walks out of the infirmary, looking more worse for wear than when sylvain had found her blackout drunk that one time.
“the professor’s fever has broken... it seems they’ve endured the worst of it,” she looks to sylvain, who is already on his feet. “they’re going to need more rest, but if you’d like, i’ll allow a visit.” sylvain thanks her, and then felix, before rushing in.
there he saw you, laying on your back and a small smile on your lips as you tilted your head up to see him. sylvain was at your side in an instant, kneeling by your bed and grasping your hand, kissing it over and over until he heard quiet giggles escape your lips. sylvain then finally looks up at you, noticing how you glowed a little bit less than you usual, but that smile was so alive sylvain can’t help but think that you look more beautiful than ever.
“i was so scared,” his hands clutch your own so tightly, like he’s trying to feel that you’re really there. “but... you’re alive! goddess, i’ve never been so happy. i might just faint!”
“please don’t, love, we don’t need the both of us down for the count.” sylvain chuckles, placing another kiss to your knuckles. a moment of tender silence passes, the both of you basking in each other’s presence is the only thing needed at that moment.
“i had been so intent on lecturing you about not risking your life for me but... i can’t. i can only thank you,” he looks at you tenderly, “i know i’m supposed protect you, that i should be here because of my carelessness but the past can’t be changed. but i swear on my honor... no, my life that from now on you won’t need to protect me ever again.”
“sylvain, i don’t want your honor or your life... i want you.” your tired voice rasps, and he feels his eyes start to water yet again. “let’s just both protect each other, watch each other’s backs. how about that?”
“yes, that sounds wonderful. especially if it means getting to be beside you in battle too.” you nod sleepily, squeezing his hand tight as to make a vow. “i hope i don’t get too distracted, sometimes watching you fight makes me want to--”
“i was going to invite you up here with me but after that comment...” you tease, rolling your eyes at his comment.
“ah, it was merely a jest, my love.” you scoot over nonetheless, slowly and carefully as to not open up a fresh wound, and he joins you, kicking his boots off and wrapping his arms around you. he feels so warm, and with the quiet thrumming of his heart, you’re quickly lulled into sleep. sylvain smiles, kissing your forehead, before nodding off as well.
later, when mercedes comes back to check on you, she finds you and sylvain both cuddled up and sound asleep. she can hardly stand how cute the scene is, sylvain holding you against him, your head on his chest.

me before playing blue lions: haha I’m not like ~other girls~ I don’t like Dimitri and I think he’s boring and basic.
me after playing blue lions: I will die for Dimitri.
I finally finished Azure Moon!! Can’t believe it took me 4 damn months to finish this route. Just like with Crimson Flower, I decided to do a very long write up of my thoughts of this route after letting my thoughts marinate for a bit. There will be spoilers for both Azure Moon and Crimson Flower. Also disclaimer: these are just my personal opinions.
Tldr: this route was so fucking good!!!! I jumped ship from being team Edie/BE to team Dimitri/BL faster than Sylvain jumps girlfriends because I enjoyed this route more than Crimson Flower in almost every way possible. The Blue Lions are my KIDS and I will die for each and every one of them. Blue Lions may not be my first route/house, but this is where my heart rightfully lies.
I guess the first thing I should get out of the way are the negatives. While this isn’t really a complaint about AM specifically and more so the narrative over the entire game... the conflict between Edelgard and Dimitri seems really stupid and contrived. In other games, war happens because the villain is evil. In this game, war happens because the villain is fucking stupid. Basically, I still ain’t convinced that Edelgard’s war was ever necessary LMAO. She straight up nuked the church’s authority and relevancy out of orbit the chapter before the time skip, so she technically already accomplished her goal; why she still feels the need to go on a savage conquest alludes me.
Speaking of nuking the church’s relevancy out of orbit, that’s exactly what happened to Rhea LOL. Despite all the church goons clamoring every .5 seconds about how they gotta save Rhea, we literally never see her again at all after the time skip, even at the end of the game. It makes no sense why Edelgard would keep Rhea imprisoned and not kill her, especially when Rhea seemingly served no greater purpose to Edelgard and became completely irrelevant in the war phase.
Edie says some mumbo jumbo of “I weighed the victims of this war against the victims of the world and I deem that there will be less victims of war” like bitch, how??? How do you tangibly quantify “victims of this world”. If she means “people who had a shitty life because of shitty society”, then those people are always going to exist because every society has its flaws. Even if you change society, you aren’t decreasing that number because you’re only solving problems by creating new ones (Edelgard’s specialty). Also the mental gymnastics you have to do to be tortured by an evil organization only to team up with said evil organization to take down another organization that, unless I missed something, isn’t even directly responsible for the death of all your siblings??? In both CF and AM, Edelgard comes off as incredibly thoughtless and illogical in her actions and I can’t help but feel that if she had been just a little bit more diplomatic, then maybe, just maybe, she could have found a better solution without starting a bloody war.
This brings me to the god forsaken chat between Edelgard and Dimitri. Dimitri demanding to know why Edelgard started the war only for her to go “it was the only way” has about the same narrative weight as “Riku why did you become one with the darkness?!” “Because I’m the worst”. Instead of bitching about whose ~ideals~ are better, how about y’all sit down and actually discuss what each person wants to accomplish and maybe figure out a way to accomplish these goals without murdering each other over it? Not that I think Edelgard would accept anything BUT murder, but jesus, this is why you don’t leave diplomatic matters to actual children.
Speaking of why you don’t leave diplomatic matters to children, god that Gronder battle. I get that it’s supposed to be an epic showdown between the three houses that mirrored the mock battle pre time skip but... the Kingdom had literally NO reason to fight the Alliance!!! The reasons they provided to justify why the Kingdom and Alliance couldn’t team up at Gronder was so fucking dumb, especially when two chapters down the line, Claude is knocking at our door begging for help. I will say tho, I never knew how much I appreciated himbo in distress Claude until now lmao.
Rodrigue's death was also really poorly done imo. As much as I liked having Dimitri’s father figure be the one to snap him out of his insanity, (I love found father/son relationships...) how on earth are you guys so fucking incompetent that you let this tiny little girl kill Rodrigue??? It doesn’t help that the exact same thing happened with Jeralt and Monica. This... just ain’t it, chief.
I think the biggest bone I have to pick at AM specifically is... so what the fuck is the truth behind the Tragedy of Duscur LMAO??? They literally blue balled me by dropping the bomb of “Dimitri’s step mom may have conspired in it” ONLY TO NOT DO ANYTHING WITH IT. I assume that the full truth behind the Duscur tragedy will probably be revealed in VW (I hope) because it involves the slithers but it’s highkey ridiculous that the BL goons... never actually find out what really happened, and why. And I get that the story is about them moving on from their trauma and the past, but they should have at least figured out the actual truth behind it so they can get the closure they deserve???
Despite the gripes I have with some of the writing, unless VW or SS is mind blowingly amazing, this route will easily stand as the best route for me, because.... it is kind of is mind blowingly amazing. I wholeheartedly love character driven stories, and this route absolutely delivers in that respect-- the character writing is amazing and is essentially the heart of this story. To think Dimitri and the Blue Lions were the lord/house I was least interested in at first. Even after hearing people talk about what the BL goons and Dimitri’s character arc was roughly about, I was still blown away by just how damn fucking good it was, and this route exceeded my expectations in every way possible.
When playing CF, I struggled to connect with a lot of the beagles; I didn’t have that problem at all with the BL goons and the route does a phenomenal job at making me actually give a shit about these characters and their problems. Childhood friend squad (+Marianne and Ashe) are easily my favourite characters in this game by a landslide, and the dynamic between not only the childhood friend squad, but all the BL goons, was just so, so amazing. Watching these characters that are seemingly joined by a single tragedy, rise above all their suffering as they grow, heal, and overcome hardship together is just so... MY KIDS... MY HEART..... I really got the sense of not only their shared pain, but also shared intimacy, care, and friendship. Their support conversations with each other had everything; from goofy and fun, to soothing and nurturing, to painful and harrowing.
The connections that the BL goons have to the pre time skip missions gave part 1 story so much more meaning, and it only gets better after the time skip. I really appreciate that the BL bean boys actually feel relevant to the main story, and that their input and opinions actually mattered. The cast’s struggle to come to a consensus on the best course of action during the war phase made them feel like actual people with opinions, unlike in CF, where everyone was just a mindless passenger to Edie’s not so merry joyride. This also made Dimitri’s arc way more impactful because the narrative actually holds him accountable for the consequences that his behavior/poor decisions had on others. What I also really liked about the war phase is that you could just feel how war torn the kingdom was and how much everything went to shit after the time skip. I felt really strongly to the characters’ sense of hopelessness at fighting a losing battle as they struggled to keep their home land in tact while everything just kept spiraling out of control and deteriorating further.
So to see the BL goon beans slowly, one battle at a time, turn the tide of the war and push back against the corner they were backed in, was SO fulfilling and rewarding. The battle of Fhirdiad is probably my favourite battle in the entire game because it felt like all the suffering and toiling that the BL goons went through was finally worth it, and just watching the kingdom slowly heal after being liberated was just such a good feeling. This kind of payoff is something I think CF sorely lacked, since tbh, I struggled to celebrate Edie’s victories with her. Though I do appreciate how Edie’s a much more threatening antagonistic force than either Dimitri or Rhea were in CF too bad Edelgard’s boss battle was pathetically easy and Dimitri shredded through her armor like swiss cheese... at least Rhea put up a slightly challenging fight.
I could gush about the characters all day, but Dimitri? He makes this game, 100%. This truly felt like his story and he was the star of this route. On a superficial level, I’m a basic bitch as well as a slut for angsty boys who have trouble talking about their trauma because I want them to rail me. I fucking loved his feral personality it was just so fun to watch and interact with LMAO 10/10 would let him use me until the flesh falls from my bones. His dialogue in this state is just so demeaning, belittling and raw that it somehow comes a full circle and becomes charming I promise I’m not a sick masochist.
I’m also a degenerate and dimileth is my otp. The way the relationship between Dimitri and Byleth develops over the game truly felt like a bond forged over time. The way Dimitri admits that he couldn’t trust Byleth at first because he was put off by the way they could “kill without batting an eye”, to being so elated when he sees them smile for the first time that he’s completely mesmerized when they starts expressing emotion... oof, talk about otp material. I think what really sold me is the way he’s their anchor after Jeralt’s death; their emotional support both in a traditional sense, but also in a darker sense when he declares he will kill anyone so they desire it because their enemies are his enemies. Character A declaring they’d die for character B? Soft shit. Character A declaring they’d kill for character B? A+ romance right there, boys.
On a non superficial level, Dimitri’s character arc of his fall from grace and subsequent redemption was absolutely phenomenal. Just seeing how far he sinks, how far he goes, only to see how far he climbs his way back up after hitting rock bottom, was such a roller coaster and I loved every minute of it. I also probably like revenge stories more than I care to admit. Dimitri has everything; blood lust, cruelty, obsession, but also empathy and compassion so extreme that it’s his very own innate kindness that drives him into insanity, which is what makes him such a compelling character in my eyes. The extremity of his psychosis was absolutely heart breaking, but despite everything, him making the conscious decision to change for the better and rise up to fulfill his role as king was just astounding to watch.
I will say though... maybe I have a screwed up moral compass but tbh Dimitri brutally killing imperial soldires didn’t really upset me because... this is war??? That he didn’t even start?? Everyone is killing everyone??? Even if he never went feral, he’d still be killing because his bloody kingdom is being invaded?????? But I digress.
While I think just how damn avoidable everything was kind of detracts from the tragedy of his relationship with Edelgard, I still really loved how steadfast and unconditional his love for her was (after he stops going feral), and you can tell just how much she meant to him every time he spoke of her. I also love how the dagger kind of becomes a symbolic motif throughout the story, and Edie throwing the dagger at him in the final cutscene as a sign of her wholehearted rejection of him was just fucking depressing, but also very fitting of her character.
I adore the whole overarching narrative and themes surrounding grief and death, befitting of a war game. How, as tempting as it is to constantly keep the memory of the dead alive, there comes a point where you have to move on and not let your life be ruled by those no longer around. The way that the characters react to the death of loved ones and grieve so differently was a huge highlight of the BL squad’s characterizations, which just makes them feel more alive and human. Honestly, no words can really describe just how incredible of an experience Azure Moon was.
Anyway my order from favourite to least favourite BL goon bean boys are: Dimitri > Ashe >/= Sylvain >/= Felix > Ingrid > Mercedes > Annette > Dedue. (I love Ashe/Sylvain/Felix almost equally LOL)
tldr my experience with Azure Moon:
Tumblr media
tfw my second best girl is childhood friends with all the best boys in the entIRE GAME and she settles for a guy with a dead wife, daughter, and most likely triple her age :|.
I’ll be finally playing Golden Deer next, which I’m gonna do on NG+ Maddening so.... hope that goes well!!

Ships: Claude x Byleth, background Sylvain x Mercedes

---------
The first thing Claude thought was: “Did anyone get the number on the bus that just hit me?”
“Sir!? Sir!? Are you alright!?”
The second thing Claude thought was: “...Oh...”
He stared up at the bespectacled blue haired woman looking over him with concern on her face.
“Sir! Do you need me to call someone? Do you know where you are? What...”
Claude groaned as he finally sat up and gave the woman a carefree smile.
“I’m fine, I’m fine. No need to call somebody and if it’ll make you feel better, we’re at the Garreg Mach Public Library.”
She sighed in relief and smiled back.
“Good.”
The blue haired woman offered her hand to Claude and helped him up. She then turned to a group of young kids. Guess she must have been a teacher or something.
“Kana?”
One kid in particular, a young boy with messy silver hair stepped forward and stood next to his teacher.
“Now Kana, what do we say when we bump into someone?”
The boy looked up at Claude with big fat tears in his eyes.
I’M SORRY MISTER! I DIDN’T MEAN TO! I GOT EXCITED AND...”
“Hey, hey no need to shout little guy, we’re at the library. And don’t worry, I forgive you. Just make sure you listen to your Teach okay?”
The boy let out a sniffle and an “Okay.”
He went back to his little group and took the hand of a red-haired girl a couple years older than him.
The teacher looked back at Claude, “Once again, I am so sorry for my student...”
“Come on, you don’t gotta apologize too. Believe me, if you want to hear some horror stories about hyper kids, just ask my mom about my childhood.”
She gave a small chuckle and Claude felt a slight heat in his cheeks.
“Nonetheless, they are my responsibility. So I shoulder some of the blame.”
“Don’t worry, I’m fine. You should get back to your job instead of worrying about me.”
She nodded and turned back to her group, “Alright everyone, now where we?”
Claude watched with a smile as the kids and their teacher walked off to the library’s kids section.
He quickly returned to what he was doing before and yet as the day went on, he kept thinking about the blue haired woman.
She seemed nice, hells nicer than some of the teachers he grew up with. Those kids are lucky to have her.
Not to mention, if Claude had to be honest, she was kind of cute and that laugh…
Claude shook his head, what was he doing? It’s not like he was going to see her again.
...Though he wouldn’t mind that… maybe get to hear her laugh again…
“...I picked a bad time to realize I have a thing for girls in glasses didn’t I?”
===
Telling Dimitri and Edelgard about what happened was probably the dumbest thing Claude could have done.
Dimitri’s reaction wasn’t too bad, supportive and was even willing to help out if needed, but Edelgard… Claude can’t remember the last time his friend laughed this hard.
“...You done?”
Edelgard’s laughter started to slow down and she finally took a few breaths.
“M-my apologies, Claude it’s just…hahaha... it’s just funny to think that you, Claude “I don’t believe in hokey stuff like Moon Signs and Soulmates” Von Reigen of all people would fall in love at first sight.”
“Hey I did NOT “fall in love at first sight.” I’m just curious about her and want to see her again. Get to know her better you know?”
“That… sounds an awful lot like love at first sight.” Remarked Dimitri the Traitor
Claude glared at them both as he took a swig of his drink.
The blonde smiled and continued, “To be honest, it all does sound rather romantic.”
“Except for the part where you were knocked over by a toddler.” Added Edelgard
“I did not get knocked over by a toddler… I think the kid was in kindergarten.”
At that, Dimitri let out a laugh that he tried very hard to hide. Claude said nothing as he went back to his drink.
“All joking aside, what was her name? Perhaps you could look her up online...” asked Edelgard
At that, Claude nearly choked.
Shit! He never got her name!
Claude smacked his head against the bar and even though he couldn’t see them, he could feel the disappointed expressions on Dimitri and Edelgard’s faces.
...Well okay maybe disappointed isn’t the right word but they are judging him.
===
At some point last night, his friends did actually give Claude some good advice.
Most of the local schools had photos of their staff on their websites and without knowing her name, this seemed like the best and “least likely to get the cops called on him” way to find her.
So he grabbed his phone and a notepad and sat down at his favorite coffee shop. This shouldn’t take too long right?
...Too bad no one told him that there was a whole lot of elementary schools in Garreg Mach. Claude knew this place was a big city. He’s lived here for a good few years now and he swears he keeps finding new old places.
But did this city really need this many elementary schools!?
“Not really how I pictured spending my afternoon” Claude muttered as he scratched out Saint Cethlean Elementary & Middle School off his list. At this rate, Mystery Teach will have retired by the time Claude found out where she worked.
After scratching out six or maybe seven more schools from the list, Claude took a glance around the coffee shop; the place was starting to get a little too crowded for his liking. Maybe he should head out and take a break. Maybe do some people watching near the old Monastery.
However just as he stood up, he spotted a familiar someone at the counter.
“Here you go Ma’am, have a nice day!” “Thank you, you too.”
No way… there was no way…
Except there was no mistaking that blue hair or her voice.
...Claude wasn’t exactly a religious man but he couldn’t help but mentally thank whatever god or goddess seemed to be listening to him.
He waited until she stepped out of line before taking a deep breath, putting on his most charming smile, and approaching her; being very careful not to startle her.
However before he could reach her, the crowd in the shop seemed to shift and Claude found himself stuck.
“Hey! ‘Scuse me! Tryna get through!”
Claude tried his best to get through the crowd but some people were just way too stubborn and pushy for their own. Before long, Claude found himself falling forward out of the crowd.
‘Okay I’m taking back the thanks to any god or goddess listening, cause they’re obviously jerks and are laughing at me.’
Claude stood back and tried to look for around for the woman. Soon he spotted her through the window, walking away and chatting with a short haired blonde woman. The blonde seemed familiar somehow to Claude but he couldn’t put his finger on it.
As for who she probably was, she was likely Teach’s co-worker or just a friend… or even a girlfriend.
It was that thought that made Claude realize: What the hells was he doing?
Is he really so desperate that a smile and some basic human decency is enough to make him act like an idiot tripping over himself?
He didn’t even know her name, for gods’ sake!
Claude sighed as he picked up the things he dropped and headed out of the coffee shop.
====
Claude had hoped to spend a nice quiet evening hanging out and drinking with Dimitri and Edelgard.
Unfortunately this was not to be because when he arrived at their usual spot, Edelgard looked like she was ready to strangle someone and Dimitri was in a friendly(?) headlock by a loud drunk with bright red hair. It took Claude a minute to recognize the guy as Sylvain, one of Dimitri’s friends.
He took a seat next to Edelgard and shot her a sympathetic look. “Long night?”
“It’s only been an hour.”
“So what brought Sylvain here?”
“Apparently he’s getting married to Mercedes.”
If Claude had a drink, this would be the point where he’d spit it all over the counter.
“Wait. Sylvain is getting married. OUR Sylvain?”
“Do we know any others?”
“...So...”
“Dimitri called Mercedes to come pick Sylvain up. She was just getting off work when he called so hopefully she’ll be here soon.”
Claude looked at the thrilled drunk redhead and could hear him gushing about his fiancee and how she’s one of the few people who could see the “real him.”
Meanwhile poor Dimitri is just nodding along and adding the ocasional “I know” and “I’m very happy for you.”
“Never thought Sylvain of all people would get married.”
“Well I suppose this week has been one for miracles. Speaking of: how is your search for your true love going?”
Claude decided to ignore the “true love” comment and explained to Edelgard that he gave up.
“Give up? That doesn’t sound like you.”
“Yeah well, I didn’t realize how many schools I had to look up and I kind of had an epiphany that I was acting like a creepy idiot.”
“I see.”
After a few more minutes of trying to talk to his friends over Sylvain’s ramblings, Claude heard the sound of the bar door opening. He looked over and his eyes widened.
“Mercedes? I almost didn’t recognize you.” remarked Edelgard
The blonde giggled as she showed off her short hair.
“Do you like it? It was starting to become a bit of a hassle to take care of it and I thought it was time for a change.”
THAT’S WHY SHE SEEMED FAMILIAR, Claude just didn’t recognize her with the new haircut.
Upon hearing Mercede’s voice, Sylvain released his death grip on Dimitri and stumbled over to her.
“BABY!” he shouted as he fell into her arms
“Hello to you too dear.” Mercedes said with a smile
She then turned to the three, “I hope Sylvain didn’t give you three too much trouble.”
“N-not at all. He merely wanted to let us know about the engagement and celebrate. Congratulations by the way.” said Dimitri
“Let us know when you figure out a wedding date alright?” said Edelgard
Mercedes nodded.
“We will, thank you. I’ll be taking him home now. Good night everyone.”
As Mercedes started to walk towards the exit with Sylvain’s arm draped around her shoulders, Claude stood up.
“Hey wait Mercie!”
“Hm? Oh, Claude. What is it?”
“This… might be a weird question but… do you… happen to have a co-worker who’s a… woman with blue hair and glasses?”
===
“Okay so let me get the story straight. You were at the library, one of the kids that Mercie watches over knocked you flat on your ass and you fell in love with her co-worker when she checked on you?”
Claude glared at Sylvain, “Aside from the “falling in love part,” yeah you got it down.”
So it turned out that Mercedes was co-workers with Mystery Teach in an After-School Program. After Claude explained his situation, Mercedes offered to let Sylvain drive him to the school that she worked at to meet her co-worker, Byleth.
Gods did it feel good to FINALLY have a name to work with.
“You know… since I’m picking up Mercedes, if both girls are up for it, we can do a double date right away.”
“Just shut up and drive.”
The two stayed quiet for the rest of the ride (though not for lack of trying on Sylvain’s part) until they finally arrived at the school.
Claude could hear the kids further down the hall, guess Mercedes and Byleth weren’t off the clock just yet. Thus he and Sylvain sat down on a nearby bench.
He chuckled and Sylvain looked at him curiously.
“Oh just… sitting out here kinda makes me think of my own school days. Like I’m waiting for the Principal to come out and lecture me for releasing a stink bomb in the gym.”
“Whoa, really?” Sylvain asked with a laugh
“In my defense, it wasn’t supposed to go off at that moment; the casing was just badly made.”
The two made small talk as they watched parents come in and out with their kids.
Claude always liked people watching but he’d never seen such… interesting characters.
Like the guy who looked like he stepped out of a comic book, his wife who looked like she could bench press DIMITRI, and their kid who looked like the dad’s sidekick.
Then there’s the father+daughter duo wearing toy fox ears and making, he’s assuming, fox noises as they went down the hall.
A few more minutes passed by when a little voice shouted out, “Hey Mister!”
Claude turned to the voice and saw that same silver haired boy who ran into him.
“Oh well look who it is. You doing alright kid? Listening to your Teach, I hope?”
The boy, Kana, he thinks Byleth called him, nods and smiles.
“Uh-huh. Are you here to see Ms. Byleth?”
“Heh, aren’t you a smart kid. Yup, just here say hi to her.”
“...Are you marrying Ms. Byleth?”
Claude’s eyes widened as he let out a choked noise and Sylvain let out a laugh.
“Kana!”
Approaching them all was a friendly looking guy with silver hair, a woman with red hair that Claude could only describe as “fluffy,” and a slightly older red haired girl.
“Hi mama!”
The little boy rushed into his mom’s arms and was lifted up. The woman sighed and faced Claude and Sylvain.
“I’m sorry, I hope he wasn’t bothering you.”
“N-nah, it’s… it’s fine.” Claude said, trying to hide the red on his face
The redheaded woman nodded and started to walk away with her family while the boy waved good-bye to Claude.
“Bye-bye Mister!”
As soon as that family was out the doors, Sylvain shot Claude a shit-eating grin.
“Smart kid right?”
Claude said nothing as he glared at him.
A couple more families came and went and Claude was starting to nervously tap his foot on the floor. The longer the two waited, the more chances Claude had to overthink.
Did Byleth even remember what happened at the library? Would she just stare at him blankly if he tried to explain who he was? Would she think he was some stalker?
Thankfully before Claude could further give himself a panic attack, two women stepped out from one of the rooms.
Mercedes… and Byleth.
Sylvain of course practically jumped off the bench and ran over to greet his fianceé while Byleth stood to the side and watched the two in amusement.
Well… now or never. Claude stood up, took a deep breath, put on his most charming smile, and approached her; being very careful not to startle her.
“Hey Teach.”
Byleth turned to him. At first she looked confused but a spark of recognition quickly lit her eyes.
“Oh, it’s you, the man from the library. Are you doing alright? No bumps? No dizziness or anything?”
“I told you before, I’m fine. You don’t need to call a doc or anything. The name’s Claude by the way.” he replied with a laugh as he offered his hand
“I’m Byleth and sorry about that. The double checking’s become a force of habit. My roommate can tell you plenty of stories about me slipping into what she calls “Teacher Talk” to her.” She said as she took his hand and shook it
“Heh well maybe if you got the time, we can sit down for a drink or some coffee and you can tell me all about it?”
Byleth gave him that same smile that he couldn’t stop thinking about.
“I’d love to.”

Unorganised thoughts on Silver Snow:
When I finished Golden Deer, I said that it had felt like a more traditional Fire Emblem story than Blue Lions. Silver Snow is that but even more so (though GD is still the most trad-FE cast, IMO)
Having already played those two routes, it felt very much like a whirlwind tour of them both, plus another battle thrown in at the end - a battle that probably should have been harder, but I (completely accidentally) built the bulkiest Byleth imaginable, especially resistance wise, plus high magic - and so, by pairing high defensive stats with Nosferatu, I tanked every attack that came my way
Gaming, for me, is just doing whatever the hell I feel like, stumbling into good results, and then pretending that I did it on purpose
I spent the whole battle with the Dragon Tales theme song stuck in my head. Kind of killed the mood
I really enjoyed that after wrapping up both the Edelgard and TWSITD plots, they basically Persona 4 you by trying to convince you that the whole game’s done now and all that’s left is to chat with everyone - though unlike in P4, there’s very obviously something left to do because they give you a whole month of prep time, rather than just one day
I felt the same way about this on Golden Deer - none of the characters are appropriately shocked by Rhea’s highly questionable actions
Also - she says she’s going to explain the whole truth! And she doesn’t! Only the Byleth creation stuff! The other revelations from Golden Deer are missing! Rhea! Why! Are! You! Like! This!
This is actually a problem I have with this game as a whole - they want to keep certain lore and secrets exclusive to certain routes, but it results in every story feeling in some way incomplete. Like, Fates gets a lot of crap, but at least you did get a full story from your half (third? never played Revelation) a game for the price of a whole one. Blue Lions gets the worst of it, I think
Plus, when you know some of said secrets, it makes characters who refuse to share them in other routes seem weirdly (and sometimes, contrivedly) cagey about things they really do not need to be cagey about. See: Claude refusing to tell Dimitri and Byleth in Azure Moon that he wants to End Racism, and instead vagueing about ‘achieving his dream’. This is not Edelgard wanting to conquer Fodlan and dismantle the entire social structure, Claude, your ideals really are not so controversial that you need to be this coy. Dimitri and I are cool, we getcha
My one sentence review of the whole game is basically: Great characters, great world building, great gameplay - but really, really frustrating plot structure
I’m also really upset that Seteth does not have a dragon form
Speaking of Seteth, I married him this time around. I mostly decided to do it for laughs, but while Byleth/Dedue is still my number one Byleth pairing, I came to really, genuinely like them together. Seteth is one of my favs, now more than ever
It helps that romancing Seteth feels a lot less... creepy than romancing most of the students. I like Linhardt, but romancing him felt very weird to me because I couldn’t get over Byleth having first known him as a 16 year old under their care. Dedue, for the record, doesn’t elicit this response  because he doesn’t really feel as much like a student to me? Role-wise he feels a lot closer to the knights, and it’s just that he's been enrolled as a student for convenience’s sake, which makes him and Byleth feel more equal than they do with most of the other kids. Helps that he’s also on the older end
Anyway, Seteth and Byleth would be the nerdiest couple ever, is the impression I got from their ending. The confession scene made me laugh in how ‘oh we’ve got a lot of work to do - btw wanna get married? - sweet, now let’s get back to work’ it was. Mark Whitten is a gem
It’s also the the first time I felt like the game was actually shipping me with a main lord (Seteth taking that role in the absence of the box lords on this route). Haven’t done Crimson Flower yet, so no opinion on the Edelgard/Byleth relationship yet, but regarding Claude and Dimitri my (pretty damn controversial, possibly a bad idea to put out there) opinions on them with Byleth are that
Claude and Byleth are platonic bros, regardless of Byleth’s gender. I just don’t get any feeling of romance from their relationship at all, and so pairing them off feels weird (to me, personally - I don’t hate the ship or anything, though)
Meanwhile Dimitri 100% had a crush on his teacher at school, but after more than five years of enduring trauma after trauma, and then half a year of beginning to heal (whilst fighting a war culminating in the execution of his step-sister), Dimitri is nowhere near ready for a romantic relationship. And when he is, I wouldn’t want him with any of the main cast, Dimitri x Village Girl OTP. I guess if it has to be anyone, I’d be okay with Mercedes, maybe Marianne - hell, maybe even Claude - but really, I just want him to get a fresh start. I think that’s the healthiest option for him, in the end
I do think it’s a pairing that could work in an AU where Dimitri doesn’t have any of the experiences he has in canon, though
And again, this is just my personal reading
I’ll also admit that I may be influenced by the fact that his two most popular pairings are with Byleth and Dedue, who I greatly prefer with each other. Mostly because I love Dedue with all my soul and his ending with Byleth is by far his happiest, in my eyes at least. It’s the only one where he puts some distance between himself and Dimitri and evens out the power balance in their relationship, which makes me happy because oh boy, the Dimitri/Dedue relationship is super interesting and compelling, but also (again, by my reading) all kinds of unhealthy as it’s presented for most of the game - power balance issues like I say, the fact that they tend to indulge, even encourage, each other’s worst instincts and behaviours, mutual guilt complexes - like I say, it’s fascinating, but damn screwed up. IMO, they’re one of the best examples I’ve seen of how unhealthy relationships aren’t always the result of one bad person, and how two good people can end up being very bad for each other
Though it is, again, a pairing I can see working (and actually being incredibly cute) in an AU where they’ve lived less horrible lives
And it’s not like I don’t want them to be friends, I just want them to also develop healthier boundaries and equal levels of respect
oh my god none of this has anything to do with silver snow what am I doing
But hey, speaking of Dimitri - I flip flopped on whether I thought his death was handled better or worse here than Golden Deer. It was given, I felt, more appropriate gravitas, but again suffered from ‘Dimitri’s dead! No, Dimitri’s alive! Oh wait, now he’s dead again’ in like, three successive scenes. And then you see his... ghost? I guess?
Dimitri really seems to get the short end of the stick on routes outside his own. Claude’s non-Deer roles were, in both cases I’ve played, much stronger and more fitting, and Edelgard is Edelgard
Maybe he’ll be good in Crimson Flower. Please. I miss Dimitri mattering. He’s probably my favourite of the three
There’s a point - obviously I don’t fully know Edelgard yet, but from what I got from the White Clouds section, above anything else she strikes me as an incredibly realistic depiction of a slightly edgy, extremely idealistic, but also highly naive and short-sighted teenager
Her whole goal, it seems, is meritocracy. She hates the crest system and the nobility, and she wants to create a system of equal opportunity. I can get behind that, but I really hope she’s prepared to accept the fact that true equal opportunity is basically impossible without recreating The Giver, as inequality is always more complex than one single factor being to blame for everything. Has Edelgard considered other limitations that make true meritocracy difficult to achieve? Has she been working on, say, a comprehensive benefits system? Or is she more of a libertarian type, and so primarily all about negative freedom and removing direct oppression? I hope Crimson Flower goes into detail on this, I’d be genuinely interested to know
I also find it interesting that she gets very angry about the fact that people hurt her and her family as a means to their own ends, so she decides that her own ends are to eliminate the system that lead to that happening - and she doesn’t care who she has to hurt in the process
This isn’t a CinemaSins *ding* plot hole observation, I genuinely think it’s interesting, and not actually that unrealistic
I also suppose her goal is no less naive than End All Racism By Being Nice To People, but Claude isn’t killing and persecuting people in attempt to achieve that, so it invites less scrutiny
I do wonder if I would have felt more strongly positively about her if she’d been my first playthrough. I do believe she’s a person that sincerely means well, and she’s certainly sympathetic, but - hmm. I’ll make my mind up when I finish CF
Anyway, paired endings. A few that I got include Raphael and Bernadetta (by far my favourite Bernie ending so far, seriously, what is that Caspar ending), Shamir and Leonie, which was cute and goofy (as Leonie’s endings tend to be, I notice, I do like that girl), Felix and Dorothea (not my favourite for either, but cute), Sylvain and Mercedes (the same but even cuter), Cyril and Petra (which felt wrong, partly because I love Cysithea a hell of a lot, and also because despite knowing there’s only about a year between them, Petra looks so much older pre-time skip), Ferdie and Marianne (super wholesome and sweet), and Linhardt and Caspar (my boyyyyssss that I refuse to ever separate again)
Not sure what I’m going to aim for on CF aside from keeping those boys together and also Ferdie/Hubert, as I’ve Heard Things
Flayn and Manuela have an A support so I figured they had a paired ending and it turns out they do not, which means Manuela was alone forever and Flayn ran away because apparently she hated having Byleth for a step mother I guess, rude
My Byleth (Myleth?) was prepared to be the best step mother in the history of the world, so offended
I realised ‘Javelins of Light’ is one of my absolute favourite tracks in the whole game. Mostly because it sounds like something out of Danganronpa, which made me nostalgic
I also like ‘Guardian of Starlight’ for somehow managing to sound like a Danganronpa/PMD: Explorers crossover track
I love how out of nowhere the Immaculate One fight is. It really does just feel like they needed something to distinguish the route from Verdant Wind outside of Claude not being around, so they just had a map that was less cool in every way except for the dragon
Is there an explanation for why Nemesis doesn’t show up on this route?
Also - I didn’t mention this in Golden Deer thoughts but I also found that final battle way, way easier than it was probably meant to be because I’d made everyone into a flier and so the floor damage hazard was meaningless
Which I totally did on purpose and not so I could make a stupid joke post about my all-wyvern team
Anyway, in conclusion, Silver Snow was a good route, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would (I’d kind of thought it was just going to be GD without Claude, which isn’t... totally wrong, but it’s got some other stuff going on too), I liked Seteth getting to have a bigger role, I thought it had the best final boss (if not the best final boss map), and I liked that I got some more Dragon Lore (never a bad thing)
please don’t yell at me for my controversial shipping opinions

what about one where they kees
First Kisses and Much More To Come
When the chaos had all died down and Kepler was left to lick its wounds and rebuild, the folks at Amnesty Lodge had found themselves in an interesting place. Their secrets were out, but now most of the townfolk had supernatural secrets of their own, with tales of fighting demons pouring from the rifts of the Quell into the streets told amongst themselves.
Everyone had a lot of catching up to do, but Barclay and Agent Joseph Stern especially so. Stern had stuck around to aid with the rebuilding, the pair often working together when they could. If the remaining residence of Amnesty lodge noticed the warm, longing glances between them and how frequently they made excuses to hang around one another, they didn’t comment. Whatever those two had going on, they’d have to figure out on their own.
Barclay knew they needed to talk. Talk about the fact he was bigfoot, yes, but also talk about all those moments they’d shared long before Stern knew the truth about him. Those moments of brushed fingers and tender words that he’d ultimately made sure didn’t lead to anything out of fear of being found out or letting himself get to close. Things that didn’t matter anymore.
So a conversation was definitely in order, but he just couldn’t find the time to do it, with Joseph being in and out, and how busy he’d been as well. That was, at least, until a quiet winter night when everything had finally slowed down. It had been snowing heavily, forcing everyone to take a break from their rebuilding, so many of the residence had opted for a quiet night inside.
Barclay was cleaning up after dinner, many of the residence retiring to their rooms. It was quieter with Aubrey and Dani gone, their absence felt keenly, but according to Mama being able to communicate with Thacker through his old crystal, he knew they were alive and well in Sylvain, doing good work to rebuild as well.
Finishing with the washing up and hanging up his apron, Barclay made himself a cup of tea and had a seat in front of the fireplace in the now-empty lounge area, letting out a contented sigh. Snow was still falling outside, flickering in the outdoor lights surrounding the hot springs as he lost himself in the warm glow of the hearth.
However, it wasn’t long before he heard a pair of footsteps behind him, the sylph craning his next to peer over the back of the sofa to see who it was. Joseph noticed him watching, smiling warmly as he padded towards the table where they kept the coffee maker and electric kettle for the guests. He was dressed down in a comfortable sweater and jeans, his sleeves pushed up to his elbows. He had his glasses on instead of his contacts, which Barclay always thought looks good on him.
“Ah, hello Barclay. I see we both had the same idea tonight.” The agent chuckled, making himself a cup of tea. Barclay knew exactly how the other man took it, watching with amusement as the man dumped at least three spoonfuls of sugar into his drink. It didn’t matter if it was coffee or tea of any variety, Agent Joseph Stern took his hot beverages very sweet. He had to assume the man brushed his teeth well, considering he’d never had anything but a dazzling white smile.
“Guess so, good night for it.” He nodded, scooting over on the sofa as Stern came over to join him, mug in hand. The agent sat beside him, perhaps closer than one normally would with someone who was just a friend, Barclay feeling him sink into the cushion beside him. “It’s weather like this that does a good job in reminding everyone to take a break every once in a while, y’know? Gotta stop all the rush and slow down to mountain time. At this rate, I reckon we’ll be snowed in for a day or two before they can get a plow up here.”
“Goodness, I hope that won’t be too dire of a situation.” Stern glanced at the falling snow out the window with concern, but Barclay waved his worry off.
“Naw, we’re pretty well stocked on food, and even have a generator if the power goes out. Barring a medical emergency, we can keep going for a week up here, especially considering that most of the folks here don’t even need to eat, as long as we have access to the hot springs and I don’t imagine it’s going anywhere. I’d like to see the weather try and freeze that thing over.”
“That’s good. I suppose it’s really just myself and Ms. Cobb that require physical sustenance then.” Barclay had a sip of his tea as Joseph nodded, the cryptid almost able to see the gears turning in his head. He always got like that whenever he got new information on the slyphs, always looking like he was itching to get out a notebook and write it all down. “If you don’t mind my asking, why do you eat, if you don’t have to?”
Barclay smirked, shaking his head fondly. He loved how curious Stern was about everything, eyes bright with excitement in learning about the creatures he’d been trying to find for so long. It seemed like his goal had never truly been to hunt them, even though that was his original pretense; he just wanted to learn.
“Why do people do anything that has no functional purpose? It’s fun and it’s delicious, simple as that. My love for cooking stems from just how interesting it is, and how much I enjoy it. Hunger might not factor into it for me, but that’s even more reason to make sure a dish tastes good if that’s going to be the only thing I get from it.”
“That makes sense. It’s more entertainment than anything then, and humans certainly enjoy their own forms of entertainment just as much.” Joseph nodded, leaning back against the cushions.
“For what it’s worth, we enjoy those forms of entertainment too.” Barclay mused, eyes sliding over Joseph’s form as he wet his lips. “We enjoy a lot of things that humans do.”
Joseph met his gaze, a dusting of pink rising to his cheeks from the attention Barclay was giving him. “I see. What um.. What sort of things do you enjoy then?”
“Oh, all sorts of things. Food, sports, books. Good conversation. Spending quality time with handsome FBI agents.” Joseph blushed more brightly, a ruddy hue coming to Barclay’s cheeks as well. Apparently, he was feeling bold and just a little cheeky tonight, but they’d spent so long dancing around each other, he just felt ready for this to go somewhere. “Though that last one might just be me.”
“Barclay, I…” Stern put his cup down, their knees bumping together. The agent bit his lip as Barclay followed suit so he could give Joseph his full attention. “I like spending time with you too. Very much so. All this time, I thought you.. I thought you redirected my interest in you because you didn’t feel the same way, but.. in retrospect, it makes quite a bit of sense why you did. God forbid I discover your secret, no doubt.”
“Yeah, something like that.” Barclay rubbed the back of his neck, sighing softly. “I didn’t think we could be a thing, even though I really wanted it to be. Despite being someone who claimed to be literally hunting me, you’re sweet and charming and after getting to know you all these months, I can’t help but… not have feelings for you, y’know?”
“I feel quite similarly. Admittedly, despite my hinting, I wasn’t sure if a relationship with you should be something I should have been pursuing, what with my work and how I thought I’d eventually be leaving. But, considering my new orders, it seems I’ll now be around for the foreseeable future.” Joseph hesitantly reached down, taking Barclay’s hand.
“Seems that way, yeah.” Barclay jumped when Stern took his hand, not expecting it, but didn’t pull away, running his thumb over Joseph’s fingers. “So.. the whole bigfoot thing doesn’t bother you then?
“Bother me? Goodness, no.” Joseph’s face was aflame, but he was grinning, having to look away with how flustered he was, perhaps a little overwhelmed. “If anything, it’s an added bonus. Here I am, having hunted bigfoot for most of my adult life, only for me to accidentally develop feelings for him without even knowing it. It’s like something out of a fairytale. Trust me, Barclay, this is hardly a hardship.”
“Good to know.” Barclay chuckled, the two of them grinning like love-stricken fools. Another pressing matter came to mind however, Barclay’s smile faltering slightly. “In a similar vein, um.. that’s not all you don’t know about me. And I’m really hoping it doesn’t matter to you, but it’s.. something you need to know if we’re gonna go anywhere with this.”
Joseph blinked, brows knitting together in concern, nodding slowly. “Alright, I’m listening, though I doubt there’s much you could tell me, short of you being a murderer that would make me think less of you.”
“Not a murderer, despite what you seemed to think about me when you got here and didn’t know I was bigfoot. I have a pretty good idea for where those missing persons reports came from, but that can wait until later if that’s alright.” Joseph grimaced sheepishly as he seemed to recall why he’d come to Amnesty in the first place, clearing his throat in embarrassment.
“I’d love to hear it, but you’re right, that can wait until later. What was it you wanted to tell me?” He met Barclay’s eyes, expression open, and understanding. Barclay shrugged, trying to calm his nerves.
“I’m um… I’m also trans? It’s not really a big deal in Sylvain since it’s really common among animal sylphs, but I know humans kinda put more stock into that sort of stuff.” He looked away, struggling to keep eye contact. However, he felt a gentle hand on his cheek, Joseph nudging him back to looking at him. He was smiling, eyes full of affection.
“Barclay, that doesn’t make a difference to me any more than you being bigfoot does. You’re perfect just as you are, and I wouldn’t change anything about you.”
Barclay felt tears prick at the corner of his eyes, overwhelmed by joy at Joseph’s words. Without wasting another moment of time, he leaned in and kissed the man, heart rejoicing as it finally got what it had wanted for so long.
It was the first of many wonderful nights ahead of them, the two men wrapped in each other’s arms as the world outside was blanketed with snow.

Hi! May I request a fic (or headcanons) about the childhood friend squad where Dimitri, Felix, and Sylvain are all pining after Ingrid and competing for her affection? Feel free to pair her someone in the end or leave it ambiguous :) Thanks! 💕
oh yesss i got you covered anon. I’m putting it under a cut cause it’s a lil long ~ mod claude
It was summer in Fodlan. The snow that normally covered the ground in Faregus was replaced by a brilliant green. Grass sprouted up from the ground, flowers speckled in among the sea of green. For the citizens of Fargeus, it was finally time to bust out their summer clothes and hide beneath the shade of the tall evergreen trees.
Dimitri, Sylvain, and Felix were some of the few who were hiding in the shade. They stared out into the grass, watching as some of the noble girls worked with the herd of Pegasus.
Though, each of them were fixated on a certain blonde haired individual. A long golden braid and bangs that framed her face too perfectly. Piercing yet soft green eyes and a smile that shined brighter than the sun.
They all observed her for a while, watching her movements with the Peagsus as though they were the ones about to ride. It wasn’t until what felt like an hour had passed did one of them speak up.
“I’m going to do it.” Sylvain stood up from his spot, hands resting on his hips, “I’m going to ask her out.”
“What?!” Dimitri’s head turned to Sylvain almost too quickly. He cleared his throat, “I mean, uh, you’re going to ask her out?”
Sylvain nodded, looking down at the prince, “Yeah why?”
“Oh, uh…”
Sylvain’s eyes widened, jaw dropping, “Wait. Dimitri, don’t tell me… You also like Ingrid?”
Dimitri scratched his chin, a blush tinging his cheeks, “A little.”
“Count me in on that too.” Felix sighed, head resting on the palm of his hand.
“Wow. That’s the most shocking.” Sylvain said, “I thought you didn’t like chivalry?”
Felix shrugged, “I stand it when it comes to her. Besides, she can match me with spicy food.”
“What a simple man.” Sylvain shakes his head. “Either way, we can’t just allow for one man to go after her. We need to let her heart decide who she wants out of us three.”
“Sylvain… What are you suggesting…” Dimitri asked, eyebrows knitted. He was a little concerned with extravagance of his friend.
“A friendly competition! We each get one chance to woo her. Whoever she picks, that’s who gets her.” Sylvain nodded, a smile on his face. “I personally volunteer to go first.”
“This is stupid, Sylvain.” Felix frowned, dragging his eyes away from Ingrid and to the red head. “What if she chooses you first?”
“First come first serve. Would you like to go second, Felix? Our very princely prince has the highest chance of success--other than myself--so he should go last!” Sylvain smiled.
“I um guess that works.” Dimitri replied.
Sylvain waited a day to prance up to Ingrid. He spotted Ingrid sitting underneath a tree, eyes scanning over her latest book. She looked so pretty with her blonde hair tucked over her shoulder.
Sylvain put on a large grin, marching up to her and pushing his face into her view.
“Hello Ingrid~” He sang.
Ingrid looked to him and with a shake of her head, started to read her book again.
Sylvain sat down next to her, just a little closer than normal. “Oh ever so cold, I see.”
They sat there together for a while, Sylvain’s hand gently inching closer to Ingrid. Sylvain whistled a tune, letting it be carried by the wind. Sure, it was soothing. But god, was it drawing Ingrid away from her book.
Ingrid sighed, closing her book. “Sylvain what is it?”
“Well,” he took a deep breath, hand resting gently over her own. Ingrid glanced down, but allowed him to continue. “You see, for the longest time I have had a crus-”
“Oh, no.” Ingrid stood up, brushing out her skirt, “You. A philander. Actually genuinely having a crush?” she shook her head.
“Wha- No I’m being serious!” Sylvain shot up, “I-I do like you!”
“Yeah yeah,” she waved her hand. “Just like how I like extravagant people.”
Ingrid chuckled, walking away from Sylvain who stood there slack jawed.
The next day, Felix and Ingrid had ventured out into town. It was a summer festival that day, so stalls lined the streets. Each had food, clothes, or fun games to try out. Though, Felix and Ingrid were looking for one thing in particular. The spiciest food there was.
They stumbled upon a stall which had large red letters painted above it. The Spiciest Meat Around.
“At least it’s straight forward?” Ingrid said.
“And it’s what we want.” Felix eyed the booth in front of him. He glanced towards the people who had just ate. Some of them had sweat starting to brim at their forehead. Though he couldn’t tell if that was from the heat or the food. Others were fanning their mouths and others were chugging water.
The two walked up to it, each ordering a meat skewer. They stepped away from it, tapping their skewers together and both taking a large bite.
Felix admitted, it was spicy but not chugging water spicy. He still enjoyed it though, finishing it up with one large bite.
When he finished, he finally looked at Ingrid. Her face was red. Ingrid was obviously trying to power through the burn with slow chews. But it came a point where she couldn’t handle it anymore. She shoved the skewer towards Felix, dashing towards a water barrel and all but shoving her head underneath it.
Felix couldn’t help but let out a laugh as he watched her.
As the day came to a close and the two were about to part, Felix attempted to make his move.
“You know,” he said, gulping down the lump in his throat. “I really like hanging out with you.”
Ingrid looked to him with those wide green eyes, “Oh. I love hanging out with you too! You’re a great friend!”
Felix’s smile faltered, “Ah.”
Ingrid tilted her head, “What’s wrong?”
“Well.” Felix scratched his neck, “I uh didn’t... well, i meant- uh... Look.. I like you...”
“Oh.” Ingrid cocked her head to the side, “I mean I like you too.”
“You do?”
“Yeah. You’re one of my best friends.”
Felix sighed. “Yeah okay.”
On the last day, it was Dimitri. He found himself with Ingrid inside the stables. They were taking care of their horses, so maybe the setting wasn’t the most romantic but that wasn’t exactly on his mind.
Dimtiri liked to watch her as she worked. The way her hands hands glided over the horses mane. How her lips quirked up into a smile every time the horse brought it’s head closer towards her.
He could watch her for hours.
Ingrid glanced to her friend, “Something on your mind?”
“You...” Dimitri said. His eyes widening at his words, “...’re.. technique.”
He mentally smacked himself for that one.
“Technique?” she laughed, “With brushing a horse?”
“Yes.” Dimitri nodded, “You’re just so uh, elegant... when you uh brush.. a horse...”
Ingrid smiled, “I do work with them a lot. But so do you. You do amazing with the horses in stable as well. You seem really happy around them.”
“Well.” Dimitri stroked the horse in front of him, “I do love them.”
“I can see that. she said, “You’re really good with animals and kind to others... Any woman would be lucky to have a man like you.”
“What?”
“I’d hope to have a man similar to you in the future!” she said.
“Why not just have one now?” Dimitri said. Why must his mouth move faster than his brain!
Ingrid sighed, “It’s not that easy to get a man, Dimitri.”
“N-no I meant like...” he sighed, hand clenched at his side, “Any man would be lucky to have you as well.”
“You really think?” she smiled.
“I know so.”
The boys reconvened after they had all spoken to her. Each of them looking just as dejected. They all sat down underneath the same tree as before, watching the girls tend to the Pegasus.
“So. How’d it go for everyone?” Sylvain asked, leaning his back up to the trunk of the tree. “I failed. Miserably.”
“Same.”
“Same.”
“Great. Glad to know we all sucked.” Sylvain said. “But I don’t plan on giving up. I don’t know about you guys.”
“Never said I would.” Felix said, “I still like her.”
Dimitri nodded. “Neither did I. So except the worse.”
Sylvain turned to the prince, “Does the worst means you crash and burn? Or we lose? That statement can be taken many different ways.”
The girls by the stable always noticed Dimitri, Sylvain, and Felix sitting underneath the tree. So finally, one of them walked up to Ingrid.
“Hey Ingrid. Why do the boys always sit over there?”
Ingrid glanced over at them, well aware of how they came to watch her work.
“Oh.” Ingrid sighed. “I think it’s cause they all like me.”
“They... what?”
“Yeah I know... A tough choice, right?” Ingrid took one last look at the boys.
She really did love them all.

Extended Three Houses Thoughts
I’m about two chapters from the end of the Blue Lions route but I do have some extended thoughts on the game that I wanted to type up and share before I get back to it. Spoilers below the cut, in case that wasn’t obvious.
So first off I want to say that I have far more positive things to say about this game than negatives, but I do think this game has some negatives. These aren’t in any particular order I just kind of typed them as I thought of them.
I feel like a lot of what this game does was in direct response to Fates. There was a lot of swinging the pendulum back in very noticeable ways, and for the most part I think that’s a good thing.
The seriously slimmed down cast, for one. I was kind of surprised and a little worried when I first picked up the game and I found out that each house only had about seven core characters, but I like it. Fates had too many characters, and most of the time they ended up being redundant. You had, what, eight fliers in Revelation including children, with at least five more characters potentially able to become fliers through their normal promotion paths? When, at most, you probably needed three. And some were significantly better than others, so obviously you went with those and the rest kind of rotted away in your barracks.
With Three Houses each character feels important. Since you can now train basically any character to be anything it also means you can have some fill specific niches. You can have Sylvain be a sword cavalry unit, and Dimitri be a lance cavalry unit, and Ingrid an axe cavalry unit if you want, drop their breaker skills on them, and they can all be useful and important on the same team.
The supports also feel more meaningful. Don’t get me wrong there’s still a lot of re-hashing of already covered territory (basically all of Dedue’s supports involve either cooking or the fact that he’s from Duscur, most of Ingrid’s revolve around wanting to be a knight or marriage contracts, etc.) but the fact that there’s less of them makes this feel like less of a problem. And it’s nice that, now, they don’t try to force every conversation into a C-B-A-S format. Some characters only have C-B, others have C-B-A-A+, etc. I think it makes sense. Not every character will be as close as others, and not all support conversation threads need three parts to be meaningful and impactful. Some need more, some need less. Trying to squish them in or stretch them out always hurt more than it helped.
That said, I’m a little disappointed there’s no match-making to be had. Everyone in this game gets brother-zoned/sister-zoned so fast it’s kind of comical. There are a few A supports that hint at feelings but you can’t actually make them S-support. Also, a character might indicate feelings for more than one other character in their A supports so it’s not definitive. Maybe there’s more once the game is finished, but within the actual main story there’s nothing.
Don’t get me wrong, it makes sense to me. As young teenagers in school there wouldn’t really be any reason for any of them to get married. I thought that might change after the time skip but it doesn’t. I don’t necessarily hate that it’s gone, it’s just a feature I enjoyed fucking around with in Awakening and Fates (and I was looking forward to, hopefully, more gay representation. I was really hoping that they might allow characters to be gay for each other and not just the Avatar character, especially since they included so many lesbian options this time around. But alas, maybe next game).
The exclusion of child characters was a good call. Barring the fact that the exclusion of S-Supports would automatically exclude child characters, I still think it was a good call. Unless the game had a significant time skip (15+ years) then they just wouldn’t have made sense. They worked in Awakening because the central narrative included time travel, but they didn’t work at all in Fates. The narrative only had tentative connections to the “multi-verse/multiple realities” thing. And, let’s be real, it’s fucking weird to have kids walking around that are the same damn age as their parents (and parents that didn’t look a day older than 17). In Fates they’d just needlessly ballooned up the cast of a game that was already way too big anyways. If they did it then they needed to do it like Genealogy, where the main cast was essentially replaced by their children instead of strapped onto the game alongside them.
I was worried that Fate’s poor handling of them meant the series was doomed to include them regardless of relevance. Glad I was wrong on that one.
The calendar progression is pretty cool, as is walking around the monastery. It was pretty fun to run around and figure out where each character liked spending their time, which characters interacted with which, etc. I’m always a fan of a little flavor text and having each character say a few lines about current events was really cool and helped give each one a little more personality. The more structured pace of things makes sense for the school environment. Though it does take out some of the urgency when the mission is “FIND FLAYN IMMEDIATELY” and then you have to wait until the end of the month anyways to do it. But for other things, like a mission to march on enemy territory, it makes sense (your entire army isn’t ready to go immediately, there’s preparations that need done).
The designs of the characters themselves were pretty well done. I especially appreciate how they toned down a lot of the sexualization that Fates became pretty famous for. And considering basically all of these characters are between 15-18 all I can say is THANK GOD. Even their aged up versions don’t seem too bad, though I’ve only really seen the Lions (because I was dumb and didn’t recruit very aggressively).
I’m still NOT a fan of this “silent” protagonist thing. It just makes some of the cut scenes and dialogue sections feel really disconnected and awkward. From what I can tell a lot of your dialogue choices don’t particularly matter, anyways. You only have two options, and for the most part they have the same meaning (”You shouldn’t talk that way!” versus “I wish you would calm down.”)  and the character you’re talking to responds the same way regardless of your choice. Or you pick between two different options (”Tell me about the officer’s academy” and “Tell me about the church”) and the characters proceed to explain both anyways.
I think the biggest issues I have with this come from the fact that the game itself is fully voice acted. I think Three Houses fell into the same problem that Breath of the Wild did. Dropping a character that never speaks aloud into a cast of characters that are fully and beautifully voiced feels unnatural. I think they had two options here: Either go back to what they did with Fates (No full voice acting, just some lines spoken here and there) or they needed to have Byleth fully voice acted. After Echoes did full voice acting I really don’t think they would have been able to go back without some serious backlash.
Personally I would have preferred it if Byleth were fully voice acted but they got rid of some of the dialogue “options”. They don’t feel like a meaningful feature, it’s just a thin veneer so they can say they had dialogue options, because that’s what every other game on the market is doing. Part of me wonders if they did this as a response to the Corrin hate after Fates. It’s hard to hate a character when you pick all of their dialogue, right? If that is the case, then they clearly didn’t understand why people hated Corrin so much.
Overall I don’t really feel any connection or attachment to Byleth. That might just be me, though. The three “lords” of the game are clearly meant to be the main focus, especially when it comes to character development. Maybe I’ll change my mind on that after I beat the game.
That said, thank fuck they toned down the avatar hero worship. Circling back a little bit, I just feel like the character of Byleth is handled much better than Corrin. It’s kind of unfortunate that Awakening, Fates, and Three Houses kind of have this avatar hero-worship vibe to them but if we’re going to have to live with it then I guess I’ll explain myself.
In Awakening the hero worship worked. Robin was, essentially, a brilliant tactician that brought a lot of success to Ylisse’s army. There were at least a few characters that were initially wary of Robin, but they were treated respectfully by the story and it’s presented as though they are just exercising a healthy amount of caution.
In Three Houses the hero worship works. It feels much less like worship and more like genuine respect and admiration. Byleth is a professor and a mentor to these young people so it makes sense. There are a few that were initially skeptical of him/her (which is totally justified in the story because Byleth appears to be barely older than them with zero teaching experience) but they come around after Byleth’s skill is demonstrated to them throughout Part 1. The only character I’d say seems to blindly worship Byleth is Rhea, and that’s justified because she clearly knows something about the main character that no one else does.
In Fates the hero worship was excessive. Corrin as a character is nothing really special. He/She isn’t particularly intelligent or particularly skilled at anything. The most you could say is that Corrin is probably supposed to be charismatic (since every character falls at their feet the second they meet) but Corrin doesn’t feel charismatic to me. They have multiple characters that seem to exist for the sole purpose of worshiping the ground they walk on (Camilla, Ryoma, Sylas, Jakob, Felicia, etc.), to the point that I felt it ruined otherwise interesting characters (Camilla mainly). Any character that doesn’t immediately worship Corrin is either forced to come around, brainwashed by the big bad and turned into a villain, or just wanted to love Corrin so much but circumstances made it impossible so they had to be evil. I could make an entire post about how much I hate Corrin but I’ll stop it here since this is supposed to be about Three Houses.
So considering where they were coming from... Byleth is fine. I don’t know if I like them more than Robin, but I definitely like them more than Corrin. I’ll feel more definitively about them after I’ve finished the game and played some of the other routes.
They re-use maps in this game. A lot. I noticed it pretty quickly about five chapters in, but IMO it’s a serious problem that this game never quite seems to shake. If the battle is in a city, they pick one of two city maps. If it’s in a forest they’ve got one of three forest maps. And I’m not complaining about Auxiliary battles because I only did a handful of those (and they always reuse maps for those, even in Fates and Awakening). I’m talking about main story and paralogue mission maps.
Sometimes they have a unique map (like the tomb/catacombs) but it invariably comes back later for a paralogue or another main mission. Sometimes it comes back less than two chapters after it first appeared (the monastery fight right before the time skip and then defending the monastery two chapters after the time skip.) I could understand if they re-used maps across different routes (because Fates did the same thing), but so far I’ve only been in one route and it’s the same maps over and over.
Finally, I have no idea how I’m going to survive playing this game two (three?) more times. I mean, I like it. It’s fun. But it took me like 40 hours just to complete one route I have no idea how I’m going to do all three (possibly four, since I’ve been told the eagles route can be different depending on if you side with the church or not).

i... i do not know how to feel. i feel heartbroken, on a level i can't describe. i always... in the back of my mind, i always hoped all the pcs would make it to the end, even though i didn't always like everything they did. i always thought they would pull through. but this... it was heartbreaking. and it was beautiful. and it was redemptive. and it fit into the narrative arc of ned's character and his life so well. ned was my least favorite of the core three, but now... he's a fictional character and i feel bad for not appreciating him while he was here. and its a testament to the power of clint's acting, and griffin's writing, and the entire mcelroy family's ability to suck me so deep into a narrative that i feel like i'll be grieving ned chicane for the next week or two at least. there's still about 23 minutes left and i don't know how i'm going to make it though any of them.
... oh god that's why the sarcophagus fell apart isn't it
the level of jocularity implies to me that they filmed this long before clint's scene and i'm still so upset, duck and aubrey still don't know yet
what is this place? oh my god what is this???

Okay so I finished the Blue Lions route, with a Gilbert S-Support
Rambling with spoilers under the cut ! So go in it at your own risks (SERIOUSLY there is Blue Lions spoilers under that cut !)
The disappointing : that Gilbert S-Support. I got knightzoned. Dude. I wanted to go out with you :( I genuinely got very attached to Gilbert during the story, and I hoped it would be a cute second chance romance for him. I didn’t have any info on how his S-Support would end.
Considering this is one of three mlm S-Support option, and that Alois is not romantic either, it only leaves Linhardt as a romantic mlm option, and I feel genuinely disappointed and robbed.
Especially since Gilbert S Support CG is genuinely super cute, and I think there was potential for an actually cute romance. Maybe a bit awkward with Annette but I think it could be fun and genuinely something possible and well written and well, I got... knight. Yay.
Also it’s clear there are some part of the story that is stuck in other routes, but I hoped it would at least be mentionned by the characters. Y’know. Since it’s. Quite weird. No one really question why the fuck there is monsters and how the fuck the Empire creates those monsters. I know they were focused on something else, on a more personal story, but still.
No Rhea talk also at the end, I found that a bit disappointing. Also no Patricia ?? I expected to see her somewhere, at least ??? Especially after learning her role is the Duscur Tragedy ! I feel like this part needed a bit more closure, even if we do learn what happened in general
The “I knew but honestly why” : considering the chemistry between Byleth and Dimitri, I should be able to S Support him as a guy !!! I !!! genuinely !!! can’t understand !!! This was a missed opportunity, especially since these two have one of the most amazing chemistry I’ve seen. The end cutscene, with Edelgard, and how Byleth gently guides Dimitri out, so he does not linger and look too long at her corpse ? For such a dark scene, it’s so soft. I ! Should ! Be ! Able ! To ! Marry ! Dimitri !!
The good : wOW the body horror of that transformed Edelgard ?? fucking violent, so fucking good, her monstruous appearance was genuinely unsettling, especially when she actually has her softer expressions.
The last map (classic difficult) was not the most challenging end map I’ve ever played in a Fire Emblem (I will give it to Conquest end map), but it was a pretty intense succession of maps with interesting use of long distance fighting. Too bad Dimitri and Felix were an absolute beast of a power couple in my team, bc they just ripped the map in two. Dancer Felix is a blessing.
The paired endings are quite cute, I would be interested in trying to get specific one. The two I am really happy about are Dimitri and Dedue, which was genuinely so, so, so cute, and Felix and Sylvain, who are also really cute. I got surprised by some, tho, because I got Ingrid and Seteth paired somehow ?? :’) but it was ?? cute ?? ;’) and I don’t know how Annette and Linhardt got paired together either. jflqjfqmfk. But I am glad to see those personnalized paired endings coming back, I missed them. The ones from Fates were not as satisfying.
THE WHOLE CHARACTER ARC OF DIMITRI WAS SO SATISFYING !!! Like. So. so satisfying ;----; My boy. My man. My charred sweet cinnamon roll. And I love how this path explore the notion of sin, guilt, the weight of family and of the past, redemption and justice, and not just via Dimitri’s story, but also via Felix, Ingrid, and Gilbert. There is a very strong theme of redemption and guilt in this path, and I think it was one of the really strong points of it. And by the gods did I enjoy that.
Also small but I really like how the story of Ingrid, Felix and Dimitri is weaved via Glenn, and how they all react to the same event and how they deal with it. That was really interesting and I was genuinely so invested in them going through that.
Also, just, in general, Dedue, an absolute sweetheart, an absolute amazing part of the route, plz everyone love Dedue, this man should be loved, I love him, and he should be loved and treasured, even if he wasn’t my best unit in the end. I love how all the house, post-timeskip, is just so happy to see him around and want to share stuff with him, how they want to learn about Duscur, and about him, and ahhh, it’s so cute
OH AND JFKLDJFD I love how Dimitri just gets the whole continent unified when he clearly was just focused on wanting to get his kingdom back, like, HFDLJFLSK when Claude just goes “HEY DUDE the Alliance doesn’t exist anymore, we wanna get back into the Kingdom”, like, it’s clear Dimitri just really didn’t fucking expect that, he was just here to kick imperial ass, the plan was only to kick imperial ass, how the fuck did he become king of the whole continent, help teach, that was not the plan, the plan was only to kick imperial asses, wth
In conclusion : Blue Lions are my babies and I feel like I am betraying them by doing the Black Eagles route

A,E,F,G,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z ;o
Okay *cracks knuckles* let’s go! F, M, and S have already been taken from this list, so feel free to send in... B, C, D, or H, I guess. Yeehaw. This is really fucking long.
A: How did you come up with the title to [TMWCIFTC]? -- It started, as many things do, as a bad pun. The novel The Spy who Came In from the Cold was a cold-war spy thriller, about a British spy who goes over to East Germany as an apparent defect, except he’s actually there to spread misinformation and fuck shit up. He falls in love, becomes disillusioned with his superiors, and is shot dead over the corpse of his lover after climbing over to the east side of the wall. Needless to say, this is nowhere close to what happens in TMWCIFTC. I chose it early on because of the literal meaning: there’s a moth(man), he’s coming in from the cold WV weather, boom shaka laka, we have a title. Over time, though, it’s evolved into another meaning. Indrid himself is coming in from an isolated, lonely existence: he’s rejoining the family that cut ties with him, he’s in love, he’s warm and safe. The moth sure did come in from the cold, and hopefully he stays that way.
E: If you wrote a sequel to [TMWCIFTC], what would it be about? -- Hm. Considering my entire TAZ fic career is a tangled hairball of sequels and prequels, I kind of have this base covered. At the moment, TCOS - aka The Children of Sylvain, the sequel to TMWCIFTC - is about three things: a Pine Guard road trip race against time and the feds, the Spanish Sylvan Inquisition That Nobody Expected (least of all Jake and Hollis, who have to set aside their differences and past conflicts to save Kepler - and who knows, maybe they’ll fall in love along the way), and Alexandra the Interpreter getting woke to Sylvan politics and doing what she can from the inside to change them. In other words, it’s going to be a massive sequel that is the finale of the Amnesty alternate universe I’ve created. It’s this series’ Endgame. (That reminds me, I need an actual title for this collection of stories I’m writing. The “Tin Cinematic Universe” doesn’t quite have the ring to it that I’d like.)
G: Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order? -- eh, it kind of depends. It’s like a buffering bar on Youtube videos. I outline what I can until I run out of ideas, then start writing, then add outlines to the end, until the outline is complete and I just have to keep writing.
I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)? -- I don’t have one for reading, but for writing, I fucking love structuring chapters around songs. Classical or otherwise, I love music. All my stories play in my head like a movie screen, and I just do my best to describe what I’m seeing in my head with an accompanying score. It’s not so much a guilty pleasure as it is a writing process. Frankly, I don’t think I actually have a guilty pleasure; the act of writing itself is all the happiness I need.
J: Write or describe an alternative ending to [insert fic]. -- An alternate ending for The Devil Went Down To Georgia would be... interesting. It ended with Boyd-as-Jersey-Devil scaring the pants off some poor broke college kid, who stole his worthless fiddle; then he changed back, and he and Ned went on their merry way to go break into Aubrey’s house and send everything down the drain. If there was one thing that I could change in there, it would be how fast Ned ran. If he ran a little faster, he would have seen the alley; he would have witnessed Boyd turning into the Jersey Devil, or at least turning back into himself; and he’d get a very rude awakening as to what Sylvans are and that his partner (in crime, and everything that mattered) was a fucking cryptid. God, that’d be a fun AU to write. Who knows, I might go do that someday.
K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with? -- At the moment, the only angsty idea that I’m actually conceptualizing is a Hollis/Jake angsty breakup for TSG. (Spoilers, I guess.) I once wrote a very grimdark ending to TMWCIFTC where everyone fell through the ice and drowned. It wasn’t fun. I’ve also mentally killed off each Amnesty protagonist and NPC in various ways, but I never felt comfortable writing them down. I only write angst with a happy ending because those are the kinds of stories I need to hear.
L: How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting? -- 9 times out of 10, I just throw it into the void. I write as much as I can in big chunks, and then kind of hope for the best. TMWCIFTC, for example, is a completely unedited, unbetaed vomit draft. I usually do a quick reread of my oneshots to catch grammar and spelling errors, but other than that I just trust myself that it’s fine.
N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you? -- Can I get some kind of resolution for To the Edge of Night? Can I please get some kind of resolution for To the Edge of Night??? I was 14 chapters into that bastard before I a) became a more casual MCU fan and b) discovered TAZ. It was such a niche fic with such a niche structure - LOTR as galactic Asgardian propaganda to cover up Odin’s mistakes - that at some point I lost interest in it. I just saw Endgame though, so now I might get some inspiration for stuff to bastardize.
O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters? -- Characters. When coming up with character backstories, I can usually find ways to slot their lives together that necessitate a plot. I love character-driven stories, where their actions actually do shit and their words actually mean something, in favor of getting dragged along behind the plot like tin cans behind a car.
P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an “architect” or a “gardener”? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?) -- I’m definitely an architect, but in a really messy way. My friends can attest that I do an insane amount of planning for each story - often in their DMs, sorry about that, Fae, Cro, Indy and Aline 😬 - and all that usually ends up in a stream-of-consciousness rant outline on Google Drive. Knowing where the story is going helps me a lot, but the planning I do is definitely just building flower beds in which to sow seeds. Or building a greenhouse. I plan the bare bones of a story, and things get really wild within it, but it does follow a logical plot structure.
Q: How do you feel about collaborations? -- I have a lot of respect for the people who can successfully pull it off, but idk if i’d ever want to do one myself. I get really possessive of my stories and ideas and like to be the one in charge of their execution. That being said, some collabs have produced amazing stories. I don’t mind reading collab fics, but actually being in a collab grates on me more than it should.
R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence? -- I’m definitely influenced heavily by Neil Gaiman. I read American Gods and Good Omens a lot while I was trying to write TMWCIFTC; not only was it a good brain break, but I was able to pick up a lot of tips on scene pacing, concise yet expressive language, and character interactions. My creative wriitng professors have always told us to read so we know what to steal - not in terms of content, but in execution.
On the fanfic side, @miamaroo is a huge inspiration for me. I’ve been reading Northern Migration a lot recently, and I love how its canon divergence is so worldshaking and so complex, but is still familiar in nostalgic yet terrifying ways. I read it back in October, went, “Huh, I wanna do something that wild. And if miamaroo can do it then I sure as fuck can too,” and I started planning TMWCIFTC during that one month dead zone the McElroys took last year. Northern Migration is one of the best, most coherent, most stunning, and most incredibly written TAZ Balance AUs I’ve ever read, and if I hadn’t read it, I wouldn’t have been inspired to take the fuckall huge plunge into TMWCIFTC.
S: Any fandom tropes you can’t resist? -- Bed sharing and cuddling, hand kissing, wrist kissing, whump, sympathetic villains. Canon divergent AUs are my absolute favorite things to both read and write. Anything that would turn me into Charlie Kelly slamming his finger on a bulletin board screaming, “CAROL,” is a fic I would give my life for.
T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand? -- Not a fan of a) woobification and b) flat villain characterization, to the point where the story is riding on villain tropes instead of an actual person or plot. Character nuance is always something I look for when I read. I don’t usually get bitter about tropes, though; some stuff, when subverted, works really well. I fully subscribe to don’t like, don’t read, don’t write, which is why I don’t write anything that warrants AO3 content warning tags or an Explicit rating, in favor of focusing on plot. Every author has a reason for what they write and how - be it their level of experience, personal preference, or simply the joy of writing something and getting it out there - and I respect that. Within reason, of course.
U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much. --
@miamaroo, for reasons I’ve already discussed. My favorite TAZ Balance author hands down. Read Northern Migration and give it the love it deserves, or I’m replacing all the faucets in your house with silly straws.
@transagentstern. Fae has a bunch of absolutely incredible fics and an amazing grasp on characterization. We come from the same place with AUs, in that canon is but the bare planks on which we put the drywall of our plot an characterization. They structure AUs and character backstories from the ground up in believable and emotionally raw ways. Also they have great music taste. I especially like their interpretation of Indrid in Moth to the Flame; he, like all the other characters in the story, is far from perfect, and his character arc is explored in relatable ways that I love to read.
@keplersheetz. Aline - theneonpineapple on AO3 - researches like a motherfucker and has a wealth of knowledge/experience/viewpoints to draw on, making author-author interactions with her an absolute delight. She’s also doing the lord’s work with rarepairs. Spin a wheel, find a ship, and she’s probably written for it or at least conceptualized it. Reading her character studies and stories of the old Pine Guard - aka Mama’s original crew, before the current PCs joined - is always a delight. I’ve also hashed out a lot of details for The Children of Sylvain, especially for Mr. Boyd Mosche, guilt-wracked Jersey Devil extraordinaire, with her help.
V: If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose? -- Not gonna lie, I’m fine with a lot of stuff that’s out there right now. It’s been a hot few months since I’ve actually stopped to read fic, but from what I recall, most of the fics I’ve read have done a good job of keeping things intact.
W: Do you like more general prompts, or more specific ones? -- The vaguer, the better. With really specific prompts, it usually feels as if the story’s been written for me already; with vague, general prompts, I have more agency to explore my own ideas. Some accompanying detail is usually nice, though. For example, the coffee shop/college/flower shop AUs that @transagentstern wrote are my ideal prompt for drabbles: premise, a little bit of open-ended detail, clear explanation of what’s going to happen while leaving the rest up to the imagination. Good stuff. If it’s for a long-form piece, though, I prefer full agency, or even just some time to lie facedown in the dirt and wait for an idea to strike me.
X: A character you enjoy making suffer. -- Yes.
Y: A character you want to protect. -- Tim.
Z: Major character death–do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate? -- I do read lots of major character death, yeah, though not always for TAZ. There’s something cathartic about seeing a character die, but sometimes it sits wrong with me in ways that I don’t like. As for writing, I’d rather kill a character for a reason rather than for shock value/for the Feels, though said Feels can accompany the reason.

~
“Look, Dimitri, look!” Juliet hopped off of the couch and ran up to the TV. “Can we watch this? Pretty please?” Dimitri looked at the screen.
“Mulan?”
“Yes! It’s one of my favorite movies!”
“I though you said Beauty and the Beast was?”
“I like that one too!”
“Oh, well, alright then,” Dimitri picked up the remote and clicked on the movie, waiting for Netflix to load while Juliet pranced around the apartment.
It’s been a few months since the incident in Discussion, and since then you had agreed to move in with Dimitri in his apartment and boy was Juliet overjoyed. Now, she was really expecting more of a castle rather than a two bedroom and one bathroom apartment, but according to Dimitri his real house back where he came from was huge, so Juliet settled with this. On the topic of you, you happened to be stuck in a group study with Sylvain and Felix, so you wouldn’t be home for a few more hours. In that time, Juliet’s mother called you to ask if you could take care of Juliet, and fortunately, Dimitri happened to be home.
Juliet was practically rocking back and forth in her seat as the movie played, and Dimitri could tell how ecstatic she was, what with her singing every song that came on and with her expressive emotions throughout the movie.
“Oh! Oh, I love this song!” Juliet chimed. Dimitri chuckled.
“Let’s get down to business, to defeat, the huns…” he sang. Juliet turned around.
“You can sing!” She jumped off the couch and sang with him, trying to do the same stunts the others did in the movie. Dimitri, truly, couldn’t mask his laughter at the small girl hopping around. And once the song finally ended, she skid to a stop in front of Dimitri, wearing that oh so familiar determined look in her eyes. She took his hands, and whilst her face remained resolute, she said, “You are the Perfect Disney Prince.”
“Yes, I believe we established that,” Dimitri says, his face reddening as he remembers her very loud proclamation.
“So that means (Name) must be the Perfect Disney Princess.”
“Well, of course.”
“Are you sure?”
“I am quite certain, yes.”
“10000% Sure?”
“Uh, yes.”
“You hesitated.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“Yes you did, don’t worry! I have a plan to make (Name) the Perfect Disney Princess!”
~
“Claude, I have no clue as to why you’re making me do this with you,” Dimitri frowns, watching as Claude rolls a strike.
“Just for good times with a good friend,” he smiles. Claude brushes off his letterman jacket and hands Dimitri a bowling ball with one hand. “Come on, unless you want to show us that Dorothea is a better bowler than you?”
“I’ll do it because you offered,” Dimitri pouts. “I hope you know that I skipped discussion for this.”
“Oh, I know,” Claude smirks. Before Dimitri could press further, Ferdinand wails behind him, something about his bowling ball stopping half way through. “Don’t worry, I’ll get you back before class ends, just relax a little.”
“Fine, fine,” Dimitri grumbles, walking up to the alley.
~
“Okay! Here’s the game plan!” Juliet stood on a stool while pointing to the blank board. “Mr. Ashe is going to draw for me since I can’t reach.”
“Hello!”
“Okay. When Ms. Byleth walks back in with (Name), we will begin station one! Miss Ingrid is going to focus on cleaning her up. Station two! Mr. Felix and Mr. Sylvain are in charge of hair!”
“Why do I have to do it?” Felix scoffs.
“Because your hair is always so nice! And Mr. Sylvain is there for moral support.”
“That’s right!” Sylvain winks.
“Next is for Ms. Annette and Ms. Mercedes who are in charge of makeup!”
“Yes! We are so excited to do that!” Annette smiles, holding her brushes up.
“And, by the time they’re though, Mr. Dedue should be back with the jewelry that I asked him to buy and we’ll be set!” Just so you know, Dedue is currently at a mall right now showing various jewelers a crude, but adorably drawn picture of a necklace.
“Once the finishing touches are done, then Mr. Claude will bring Dimitri into the room and everything will be perfect!” Juliet smiles.
Just as a quick note, let’s talk about how Juliet convinced the whole class plus Byleth to go along with her idea. She, at first, went to the teacher before class started, catching them while they were at the school market, and since you and Dimitri were busy figuring out what to buy, Juliet wandered up to them easily. Once she got their approval, Byleth emailed the other students of the class for an earlier meeting to explain what had to be done.
Now, why Byleth agreed to this? Simple, since Juliet showed up the overall class average skyrocketed. And the other classmates said yes primarily because they love Juliet, but they would also pay good money to make Dimitri embarrassed honestly who wouldn’t?
But, as the door creaked open, it became clear.
It’s show time.
“What is this?” You gasp, the entire discussion room turned into a makeshift Salon. A curtain is drawn around you and Ingrid presents you with a few wipes and perfume.
“Just go with it, (Name),” Ingrid laughs. You smile.
“Did Juliet put you up to this?”
“Yeah, but we figured, why not? We just finished midterms and we’re all tuckered out,” she explains. She finishes cleaning you up and pulls back the curtain. “Good luck with those two,” she says.
Just as she said that, Felix sat you down on the chair and pulled out a comb.
“If this hurts, suck it up and deal with it.”
“You can do it, (Name)!”
Needless to say, Felix was a lot better at styling your hair than you thought, or at least you’re assuming, Juliet didn’t want you to see the final product until you were fully done.
In no time at all, Mercedes was applying foundation to your face as Annette got to work on your eye shadow.
“What’s this all about?”
“Oh, you know Juliet,” Mercedes giggles. “Don’t worry, it’s all in good faith.”
“Oh geez, does this have something to do with Dimitri?”
“Maybe,” Annette smirks. She finishes your mascara and the two of them step back, giving each other a quick high five. The door opens and Dedue walks in, holding a small box.
“You actually found it?” Ashe asks. Dedue shook his head.
“No, but I did have it custom made instead,” he says. “The jewelers didn’t understand the picture,” he whispers. He hands you the box and you open it.
Inside was a simple but elegant necklace with a small lion charm attached to it. It was the lion’s head, specifically, but the spaces inside were filled with a glistening sapphire.
“Dedue, how much was this?” You ask.
“Don’t worry, I took it out of Dimitri’s (Name) fund.”
“His what fund?”
“No questions!” Juliet rushes up to you. She tugs on Ashe’s hand and he helps you put the necklace on. “Wow… you’re so pretty!” Juliet beams. She runs over to stand next to Byleth, who is wearing a soft expression.
“Ready for the big reveal?” They ask.
“Sure,” you say. They pull the cloth aside and your eyes lock with a familiar blue.
“H… Hi,” Dimitri musters out.
“Hey,” you smile. He looks over to Juliet, who is smiling expectantly.
“You really want me to say it, don’t you,” he slumps his shoulders. Juliet nods enthusiastically as Dedue walks up next to Dimitri. Sylvain snorts, trying to hold his laughter in, and Felix scoffs.
“Just do it already!” He says. Dimitri takes a deep breath in.
“(Name), you are a…” Dimitri stops for a second, the ever so noticeable pink rising higher in his expression. “A Perfect Disney Princess.”
Silence.
You’re processing his words.
“Oh… my… god!” You double over in laughter. “So that’s what all this is about!” You walk over to him and Dedue hands you a paper.
“While I was out I took the liberty of reserving dinner for you.”
“Thank you!” You tug on Dimitri’s sweater. “We’ll drop by the apartment to get him fixed up and we’ll head over,” you say.
Then it became painfully obvious that while you were dolled up, Dimitri looks like he just finished hibernating for the winter and his embarrassment only grew.
“Goddess above…” he mumbles.
“We’ll watch Juliet!” Ashe calls.
“Yes! You two have fun,” Mercedes waves at you.
“We will!” You wave one last goodbye and you shut the door. You and Dimitri look at each other. Finally, you spoke up. “Mulan?”
“Mulan,” he cracks a small smile.
~
Juliet looked up at the two students in front of her, in her hands was a large lollipop and in the hands of a certain black haired student was another.
“You remind me of Yzma and Kronk!” Juliet laughs. Edelgard gasps.
“How dare—“ Hubert is appalled, to say the least. Edelgard holds him back.
“Wait, let her speak,” she says.
“Can I have that lollipop, Mister?”
“Finish the one you have first, little one,” Hubert snaps. Juliet pouts.
“Can you tell us about the green haired people?” Edelgard presses.
“The one with really long hair?”
“Yes, her.”
“Oh! Okay,” Juliet smiles. “She kind of reminds me of Mother Gothel and Maleficent all rolled into one.”
“Yes, and why is that?”
“Because—“
“Juliet! That’s where you are!” You walk over to the trio. “I see you met Edelgard and Hubert.”
“Mmhmm! I like them a lot,” Juliet smiles. Edelgard’s mouth hangs slightly ajar and Hubert scrunches his eyebrows in slight confusion.
“Well, say bye to your friends now, we have to get you home.”
“Okay! Bye, Ms. Edelgard! Bye, Mr. Hubert!” You pick up Juliet and walk away, the little girl waving at the duo until they were out of eyesight.
“That little girl knows something.”
“That she does, Hubert, that she does.”

Hi everyone,
This is Ginny filling in for Sam. She does the work every week to make sure this site looks beautiful, and she’s gonna be away from her computer (which is a well-deserved break)!
Sam’s Update:
I got a lot of reading done this week, it was Booziebookathon, Dewey’s Reverse Readathon, AND NEWTs.
What Sam finished this week:
– NEWTs A-level DADA: Waking Gods by Sylvain Neuvel: This is the second book in the Themis Files. I listened on audio and it’s fully casted which is fab. I forgot how much I loooove this series. Can’t wait for the last book.
NEWTs A-level Transfiguration: Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera: this is a story about a newly out Latina on an internship in Portland, OR with her white-lady feminist. She’s gotta figure out who she is. I’m def writing a full review for this. I loved it.
Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad: book club book, can’t say too much until after book club.
What Sam’s reading now:
NEWTs E-level Transfiguration: Age of Legend by Michael J Sullivan: This is the 4th installment of this series and I fucking love them. I am about 150 pages in and remembering how much I love my sweet Rhunic children.
NEWTs O-level Transfiguration: Lady Smoke by Laura Sebastian: this is the sequel to Ash Princess. I was surprised by the first one and am equally surprised by the second one. Let’s see how it goes.
Ginny’s Update (Aka Reads-with-the-wind):
Hi Everyone, hope you’re feeling well. I had an interesting week and this weekend has about knocked me flat. I get the feeling there’s going to be a very early bedtime in my future.
Currently Reading
Visions of Heat by Nalini Signh: Man, I really love Nalini Singh. This is the second book in the Psy-Changeling series and I am ready. I’m waiting to get more into the meat of this book, I’m still really early in it.
The Ten thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow: I grabbed this book from bookcon and I am so looking forwarding to reading this. I love a good portal fantasy and boy is this book delivering.
Finished
White Hot by Ilona Andrews: Well, I had been a little worried about the consent issues and boy did I not need to. The protagonist spends the entire book basically letting the heroine know that she had to set the pace. Also the book was, yet again action-packed. Neva is figuring out how to use her ridiculously powerful powers. I will admit, the relationship itself could feel surprisingly bland for the build-up, but the plot kept everything moving!
Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond: Wow was this book both painful to read and completely wonderful. I live in a bubble, DC in so many ways is sheltered from a lot of what happens elsewhere, and I’m only in the parts of the city that aren’t really affected by extreme poverty. Matthew went and talked to both landowners and tenants to try to get a very realistic picture of how poverty and eviction affect Americans. Honestly, not sure how much I can say other than the fact that this book was really powerful, bleak for quite a while, but ultimately hopeful that there are ways to fix the vicious cycle of poverty leading to eviction leading to poverty, etc. 5/5
Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire: Surprise suprise, Seanan McGuire is back on my read list. This is the first book in the InCryptid series, and I”ll probably write a post. Basically Verity is a monster-hunter who has eschewed the actual hunting, but is now dealing with disappearing women and a representative of the mysterious monster-hunting cabal who fall on the more intense side of “assume guilty unless somehow proven innocent.”
The Candle and the Flame  by Nafiza Azad: Yet again, this is a book for book club. Sure I’ll talk more later.
Minda’s Update:
No update this week.
Linz’s Update:
pfffft minimal reading got done. I’m trying to finish my cosplay and Magicians rewatch before DragonCon. Also I joined an online-based Filipino book club so I’ve been doing a lot of Interneting and tbr adding.
What Linz read:
Tumblr media
The Revisioners by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton: This forthcoming novel (and the last of my Booziebookathon reads) jumps between two women, Ava in the present day and her great-great-etc-grandmother Josephine, a former slave. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t quite what I was expecting.
What Linz is currently reading:
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern: Bless ALA for the chance to get an ARC, but it’s really killing my productivity to read this.
Secondborn by Amy Bartol: Bless Amazon’s three-month Kindle Unlimited trial. This scifi-fantasy YA is about Roselle, a Secondborn in a society where Firstborns rule and her class is assigned to serve the government (really, the Firstborns). I’m having a really hard time getting into it; it might hit my DNF shelf
The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Asad: whoops book club is creeping on up!
Until next time, we remain forever drunkenly yours,
Sam, Melinda, Linz, and Ginny
Weekly Wrap-Up: August 4 – August 10, 2019 Hi everyone, This is Ginny filling in for Sam. She does the work every week to make sure this site looks beautiful, and she's gonna be away from her computer (which is a well-deserved break)!
