Nowwwwww, I facetiously mentioned at the bottom of this post about the Halo: Reach achievement:
Tumblr media
To do that, you have to go under or close to par time on pretty much each level ON LEGENDARY.
I have beaten Reach on Legendary but it probably took me closer to 30 hours than 3 because I did my slow, methodical strategies to get through. I did the par time achievement by running past everything I could on Easy. Can I combine the two successfully?
I decided to give the first level "Winter Contingency" a try (after watching some Youtube vids on getting this achievement, of course 😉). Par time is 15 minutes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That was my third try, the first was 16 and some minutes, the second got it to 15 and some and then that one got under the par by 32 seconds! I should note that this is considered one of the easiest levels to do on Legendary and the guide I watched by the ever-awesome Halo Completionist did it under 12 minutes and you're going to need every spare second you can scrap together to give you a buffer for some of the long, difficult levels. But still!
Tumblr media
It's silly, I know, but I feel so proud of me! I'm an old lady (well, middle-aged, if I'm being generous 😜) playing Halo with shaky hands but I made under par time on Legendary! 🥳🥳🥳
PS - Tried it again and got 13:55!

Tumblr media
you wake up to a wanda-less bed, the room cool without her to warm it. you sigh into your sheets and slowly wake up, letting your body ease into it. not rushing. golden light breathing life into the room, soft and hazy through the under-layer of curtains. wanda must have opened them.
eventually, you're awake enough that you register the savoury smell in the air. it fills the house with the warm smell of hand-crushed spices and roasted vegetables. you recognise the scents as one of wanda's favourite breakfast meals: zacusca¹, polenta ², and franzela ³. one of the dishes her mother had taught her when she was young. (pietro said it was overrated but still gobbled it down whenever wanda made it.)
as you make your way to the kitchen, practically cartoon floating towards the smell, you hear wanda softly humming the sweet little love song she'd been into lately, 'ce bine ca esti' ⁴ and smile adoringly to yourself at how cute your girlfriend was.
when you enter the room, wanda is a graceful flow of movement, floating around the space. her hands cutting vegetables adroitly before dropping them ceremoniously into a sizzling pan. she always refused to use her magic in the kitchen, she thought it tainted the beauty of it. right now, you understood just what she meant.
she looks like art with her hair pulled away from her face, frizzy from the heat and her movements confident. her skin warmed by the sunlight that gave everything a golden glow, especially wanda. its enchanting, really. you observe from the entrance, taking note of the sweatpants she stole from you last night during your movie marathon. the one that ended with you both cuddling and eventually asleep by movie three. what? day jobs are draining.
when she turns to grab a mug full of a coffee so pale it's almost ghostly, she spots you. an ardent smile growing on her face that has you wanting to lionize her forever. "good morning, моя любовь*. ce mai faci în această dimineață?" *
you hum a, "fine," padding towards her leisurely and preening at the affectionate greeting, "smells amazing in here."
she hums back and smiles, "thank you. i was gonna wake you but you just looked so peaceful, i couldn't possibly. do you want anything to drink? food's almost ready." you nod your head and move in to hug her. hugs from wanda never felt uncomfortable, they just felt safe and warm. they had an effect like no other. "i missed you." she says, whispering it like a prayer she only wanted you to hear. "missed you more." you reply, letting every muscle and thought relax into her. you can tell she's doing the same.
when you both let go, she reaches out to your face, cupping your cheeks and running her thumbs along the apples of them. the sunlight behind her giving her a halo, you wonder what your past self did to deserve an angel. whatever it was, you'd try to replicate it, so you'd get to spend all your eternities just like this. "ce am facut sa te merit?" * she says dreamily, voicing your own thoughts while taking in every inch of your face. you used to feel exposed and embarrassed by it, but now you just feel enveloped in wanda's love. she may be the scarlet witch but the magic you felt with her was different. it was like being on a different celestial plane everytime she looked at you.
"you're asking me?" she chuckles and leans in, mumbling "shut up," against your lips. you both melt into each other, you lean into her body, hands sliding onto her waist, and by the time she pulls away, you're both practically hugging. she gives a few more short kisses that have you both grinning and giggling like fools. it's such a beautiful moment, you find yourself memorising how this feels. trying to keep it safe and locked away from anything that could ruin it. there's a beat where she stops kissing and just looks at you, her eyes so tender and loving your stomach really does feel butterflies "what?" you whisper. "shh," she says, "i'm observing." that gets a giggle out of you, "observing what, exactly?" still smiling, she says, "perfection, of course."
after another moment of wanda's "observations", she pecks you on the cheek once more, putting her attention back on the meal. she asks you to grab as many pillows and blankets as you can while she finishes up. you pile the blankets until you're satisfied with the fluff, smoothing it down until it's nice and full. then, you toss on the pillows, a little less particular but keeping in mind how much wanda loves to sink into them.
when wanda strides over, steaming plates in hand, you take a deep, reveling breath, "mmm that smells amazing, wanda." she smiles and crosses her legs as lowers herself to the ground. "only the best for you, my love." she says leaning into your shoulder.
after what felt like years of gentle arguing over what you'd watch, you decide on a sitcom wanda had seen an episode of and adored. your legs are tangled together as you lean back on piles of pillows. you laugh at jokes and wanda laughs so hard at one of them that she almost chokes, which only makes you both laugh harder. it's a sweet and filling morning. the two of you just absorbing the loving energy you'd created.
proceeding the meal, wanda dumped any scraps and rinsed them and handed them to you to scrub with a kiss on the cheek. you finished and headed back to the couch where wanda was curled up against the pillows, giggling at a joke one of the characters made. you make your way down to her and get as close to her as you can, she smiles as you adjust yourself. "good?" she says when you finish, "mhm!" you say smiling up at her. she gives a smile back before facing back towards the tv. you see the content set of her face and your heart swells just a bit. lazy days with wanda were always so perfect.
Tumblr media
AUTHORS NOTE ; hi! so i tried to be really sensitive to wanda's ethnic background and also to you! the reader! some things were described in detail and others were left to your imagination!! if you have any requests feel free to absolutely fill my asks because i find this kind of stuff really fun! if you see any errors or ways i could improve, again, feel free to tell me!!

¹ zacusca: Zacuscă can be eaten as a relish or spread, typically on bread. It is said to improve in taste after some months of maturing but must be used within days of opening. Although traditionally prepared at home, it is also commercially available. Some Bulgarian and Middle Eastern brands are available in the United States. In the Orthodox Christian majority countries, it is sometimes eaten during fasting seasons due to the absence of meat, eggs or dairy products.
² polenta: Polenta (/pəˈlɛntə, poʊˈ-/, Italian: [poˈlɛnta])is a dish of boiled cornmeal that was historically made from other grains. The dish comes from Italy. It may be served as a hot porridge, or it may be allowed to cool and solidify into a loaf that can be baked, fried, or grilled.

I would just like to take a moment to talk about how the Bungie era of Halo games are a fantastic lesson in environmental storytelling.
Most players will often blast through the campaigns, as the gameplay typically comes first and the abundance of enemies and mission objectives gives the player a sense of urgency, but that’s not a bad thing. Humanity is fighting for its life, after all. However, the games actually reward you for taking your time and paying attention to the world around you, unlocking incredible story details that nine times out of ten will leave you with a chill running up your spine.
The level 343 Guilty Spark in CE (classic, not anniversary; the new graphics are a sin to that level) is obviously the most famous example of this - the level constantly builds up atmosphere and tension, and it is so cleverly designed that many of the small details are actually difficult to miss.
And then you have other examples (some more subtle than others), like the footprints surrounding the human bodies in the first level of Reach, the Mausoleum of the Arbiter visible in the distance from a room near the end of Cortana in Halo 3 (which is coincidentally where the Arbiter then drops in to help you if you’re playing solo; some nice hidden foreshadowing), and even the factions warring with each other on Gravemind in Halo 2.
However, I’d like to turn your attention to ODST, where the environmental storytelling is arguably at its most abundant.
Recently, I have been replaying through each of the games with the intent of doing the aforementioned: taking my time, exploring the levels, and resisting the urge to rush ahead. While doing so, I’ve noticed many things that consistently evaded me in the past, like neat little conversations between the troops or alternate pathways that lead to unique weapons or enemies, things that just add to the replayability of these games.
However, on my replaythrough of ODST, I stumbled across a tiny detail that, in the grand scheme of things, is no surprise if you know the plot of Halo 2, but the way it was intergrated in the environment is what made it so impactful and made me appreciate it that much more.
Now, the entire premise of playing as the Rookie IS to explore the environment and find out what happened to your squad via clues left behind, so naturally his levels are filled to the brim with detail. Everything around you from the damaged buildings and vehicles to the various messages left on walls by civillians paints a clear picture of what the carnage in New Mombasa was like - but upon looking closer, you end up discovering a darker side to the conflict, hidden away in shadowed corners and behind walls.
In Halo 2, your most prominent enemy fighting through the streets of Old & New Mombasa are the Elites - they appear in every single encounter either commanding ground troops or piloting vehicles. They’re everywhere, and there’s not a single Brute in sight.
But as soon as you drop into ODST, it’s the exact opposite: the Brutes are the ones leading the charge and doing the heavy lifting, and there’s not a single Elite to be seen fighting alongside them. So, what happened to them? Where did they go?
While travelling to a supply cache, I noticed an interactable door that I didn’t recall entering before, and inside was a familiar sight: a dark interior with scattered bodies of both human and Covenant, an expected battle zone. Upon reaching the other end of the building, I discovered another door, one that led out into a courtyard, something else that wasn’t unfamiliar to me. However, I was immediately greeted by this sight:
Tumblr media
Two Huragok floating in the vicinity, but strangely by themselves. Instinctively I retreated back through the door so I could check the map for the placements of the other enemies - except there were no other red pings. Confused and on guard, I inched back into the courtyard to scout it out myself, certain that this would be some kind of ambush and the enemies would spawn after the Huragok spotted me...but nothing came. Seeing as the Huragok weren’t doing anything to me, I let them be and got a better look at what they were circling: a ring of stone monoliths covered in glowing glyphs.
Now, anyone who has played the game will notice these glyphs popping up very frequently, often as markers to help guide the player to important places, and they are accompanied by symbols in each third.
Tumblr media
Anyone who knows anything about Huragoks will know that these symbols are a part of their language, designed to tell “stories”.
But, upon first inspection of the glyphs on these monoliths, they were devoid of any symbols, and it felt eerily...empty.
And then I got closer, and I saw the first body.
Tumblr media
At first, I almost brushed it off, because Covenant bodies are not exactly rare. But then I stopped, and remembered that I hadn’t seen a single Elite this whole time. And if the first one I’ve found is already dead, what about the others?
Well, remember how I said “first” body?
Tumblr media
The other was lying not too far away, also accompanied by the empty glyphs.
In the quiet ambience, things started to click for me. It was easy enough to deduce that the empty symbols must mean death, or at least something related to it, but why for some random Elites? What about the thousands of other bodies that littered the city? At first, it didn’t seem like I would get an answer, but then I noticed something odd on the stone above the second Elite.
Tumblr media
Snaking up the monolith was a rather brutal breadcrumb trail, and behind it, the only symbol present in the entire courtyard.
Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that large-scale events are happening elsewhere in the galaxy. ODST takes place several hours after the Prophet of Regret flees Earth through the slipspace portal, and with the knowledge of Halo 2′s story progression in mind, ODST gives us a glimpse into just how early the Great Schism was actually planned by Truth. With Regret gone, it wouldn’t have been long before Truth gave the order to the Brutes to kill all the remaining Elites on Earth.
The Huragoks, slaves to the Covenant, witnessed this betrayal first-hand, and were subjected to even worse treatment now that the Brutes were in charge.
So, they gathered around the fallen Elites...and gave them a memorial. These deaths were not accidents, they were not collateral damage; they had meaning, a story, one that deserved to be seen and remembered. So the Huragok would mourn them - including Virgil, whose symbol is the one we see on the monolith. This memorial is a message.
A message to the humans that they are not the only victims of the Covenant.
And this isn’t the only Elite memorial site either - it wasn’t long after stumbling across that one that I found another:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one shows that it was ALL Elites that suffered, not some random minors who didn’t have the skill to defend themselves. There’s a major and an ultra lying amongst these bodies, and I’m sure there are other sites like this hidden throughout the map too.
Like I mentioned before, the Elites being betrayed are no surprise, we been knew about this since Halo 2, but the way this is revealed in ODST does an exceptional job of making you feel for these Elites all over again, and Arbiter’s presence wasn’t even required. It just goes to show how talented Bungie is at doing so much with so little.
Anyway, this ended up being much longer than I expected, but I really just wanted to gush about how much I fucking love the detail in these games and the experiences they give.

Now that Halo Infinite has fixed a lot (but not all) of its problems with progression and monetization, I’ve been able to focus more on the problems with the game itself. While some, like bad netcode or hit registration, can be fixed with time, a lot are fundamental to the game, and it’s a shame seeing how flawed the foundation is.
There’s a few problems that, while massive, are also simple. Things like no player collision or friendly fire are a big one, and that tied in with the light, floaty vehicles and movement make the game feel like it has no real weight. Things just kinda move around and through each other and it feels inconsistent at the best of times.
I think my biggest issue is with the gun design though. While part of this is aesthetic (a lot of the new designs are ugly and don’t fit halo at all,) the design philosophy for weapons has made the core game way less satisfying.
There’s been a broad shift away from hard-hitting weapons with downtime or risk to weak but consistent streams of damage.
Let’s look at vehicles first. The rocket hog in Halo Reach was perfect, it did a large volley of missiles and then had a long cooldown. The normal, chaingun variant warthog also could overheat and had windows of more burst damage that were offset by cooldown time. Now both are just a consistent damage stream with no downside, there’s no reason to ever take your finger off the trigger.
The weapons have fared even worse because the weapon pool has been flooded with new additions that mostly just water down the game and are frustrating to see on the map because there could always be something better there. The worst offender is the shotgun, which now shoots faster but does way less damage, and it makes it useless against the energy sword or gravity hammer, when it used to stand on equal footing. There’s some new good guns, like the redesigned BR and the Skewer, but so many just lack identity or purpose and only water the game down.
This has been a problem since CE and only Reach ever went back to the original design philosophy of every gun being good in its own right and having uses. Dual wielding in 2 and 3 ruined this because it meant most guns had to be extremely weak so they couldn’t be overpowered when used together, and I was hoping Infinite would double down reach’s course-correction, but instead it only has leaned further into Halo 4 and 5’s path of flooding the weapon pool with more content that didn’t matter
The fundamental flaw is that they’ve tried sanding off the biggest highs and lows to instead create a consistently boring experience. So much of the game lacks impact and feels hollow.

The Avenger's Initiative, Chapter 27

Thor’s POV
"Can you believe it," she smiled, laying on the healer's stone. She looked up into my eyes as the healer nodded along, "Thor we're going to be parents."
"I'm going to get your doctor," she said quickly, excusing herself, "one moment."
Danielle looked at me. Her eyes went from excited, to nervous.
"Did she sound nervous to you?"
"Danielle-"
"Thor," she asked worriedly, "the babies...what if something is wrong."
Before I could answer she shot up and hunched over, hissing in pain. My eyes went wide, "Danie-"
"DOCTOR!"
I rushed to the hall where the healer in training had disappeared, "My wife. She is in pain."
Another healer came up to me, walking into the room at a quickened pace, "Mrs. Odinson. How are you feeling?"
"I-" she started, but she stopped herself as a scream came past her lips. I rushed up to her, trying to keep her calm, "the babies. What-"
But she stopped herself again when, yet another scream tore itself from her throat.
"What's going on?" the healer asked as she came into the room.
"Mirrored heartbeat," the assistant called from behind her. When she noticed Danielle hunched over in pain, she looked at the healer, "this wasn't happening a second ago."
"Danielle, we are going to need to take you to surgery!" the healer claimed. Danielle looked at me. Her eyes held fear, "The pain you are having as well as the racing heartbeats are telling us the babies may be in distress. Since there is a murmur there is a chance that something is wrong with the baby’s hearts."
"What?"
"We'll do what we can to fix it when we are in there, but we need to rush," she began, "we need your permission to do the surgery."
"Do whatever you can-" she hissed, "save the babies."
The healer nodded, calling for a wheelchair so that they could take Dani. She reached out and grabbed my hand, and I followed, unsure of what else to do.
"We're going to do an emergency cesarian," the healer told us as we walked down the hall. She turned towards a desk that had other assistant healers, "CALL THE OR. I'M COMING WITH AN E-CES!"
I looked at my wife. Her body lifeless on the table as the doctors had pulled a third child from her womb. I couldn't stop the tears from flowing as I looked between my first and second sons, then to their sister.
I thought everything was fine. The healer put her in the room, and they gave her drugs. Danielle was calm. Docile. Even through the terror of it being an emergency.
"If something happens to me," she called as I held her hand, "remember the names we agreed on and had said. Our baby boys are to be named as such."
"I know," I said nervously. I felt anxiety rise in my chest as I thought about the names my mother had told me long before Ragnarok, and their meanings.
She was strong and coherent when they brought Magni into the world. He was strong as an ox, and she cried happily as they told us 'baby 1' a healthy baby boy. He had eyes as blue as mine, and little blond wisps making it look as though a halo surrounded his face. Danielle cooed, saying that he was a mini version of myself.
The drugs had begun to make her loopy. But she was still coherent.
But baby 2 was where the problem was. He was living up to his namesake. Modi, an angry boy was a vengeful infant. His cries sent her into a tailspin, where her heartrate had spiked. She gasped as she looked at him. He was beautiful, but in a way that chaos causes a beautiful destruction in its wake. Modi was like a human tornado, tearing through everything he could for the sheer sake of being its source.
My wrathful son caused something in her that made her heart stop beating. I tried to reach out to her. I begged my soul to find hers. But there was nothing. I saw the life fade from her as her hand lost its grip on my own.
Her lifeless eyes held unshed tears as they considered using paddles to shock her. To somehow bring her back to us. I almost did it myself, until the healer announced that there was a third hiding in the corner of her womb.
There was no medical emergency.
The assistant to the healer was wrong when she scanned Danielle.
The murmur they'd heard was our daughter.
She had been evasive her entire pregnancy, but now she had decided to show herself. Now she wanted the world to be aware of her.
A small, pale version of my wife, her eyes held the same twinkling glint as hers had. She had copied everything to my wife's look. Her mini-self.
I cried as they handed her to me.
As I looked into her eyes.
How would I ever explain to her that her mother was gone?
I placed our unnamed daughter against my wife's chest. She was calm. Almost as if she knew who her mother was outside of the womb.
And when she cooed, I swore I saw the heart rate monitor beep.
And then it beeped again.
My daughter's hands held a small white glow as she pawed at her mother's chest.
The heartrate came back.
Danielle gasped as if she couldn't get enough oxygen into her lungs. Her arms instinctively reached to her.
To our little goddess of power and protection.
"Prudr," my wife whispered, kissing our daughter's head. She cooed and I swore I saw a lazy smile perch on her tiny lips, the cupid's bow of her lip pursing as if to say 'told you so.' My wife looked to me her eyes searching for answers...but I had none, "her name is Prudr, my king."

Halo: Combat Evolved (2001) Retrospective
When I was younger my experiences with shooters were limited. Outside of attempting and failing to clear the first stage of 'Shogo Mobile Armor Division' most of my games were of the platformer or fighting variety. The first shooter that really caught my attention, that made me want to buy a console just to play it was Halo.
During the early aughts I was knee deep into gaming news between a subscription to GamePro and infrequent access to G4Techtv, all singing the praises of Halo 2. It was talked about so much that I felt like I was missing out, that I had to play it for myself. I'd constantly read articles and go to the ilovebees arg site. Unfortunately I lacked an Xbox at the time, I had written off the console before then as none of it's early titles really appealed to me.
There was no way my parents were gonna fork over money for a third console (we already had a PS2 and Gamecube) but I managed to get one put in layaway. However there was one caveat. You see I wanted Halo 2, but my mom noticed it had "language" in the ESRB rating on the back. Halo 1 however did not have a pottymouth so that's what I ended up with. After a few months of allowances and probably my parents just paying the rest anyway, I got my Xbox.
Halo CE's title screen is the definition of iconic. A panning shot of the titular ring and the theme plays, I can't help but let it play for a bit before starting a new playthrough. The story does a good job of letting you know what's going on without over explaining lore details. I love how the games opening level goes out of it's way not to show you any of the covenant before one jumpscares you after opening a door.
I can't say much about the core gameplay aside from shoot gun feel good. It's as simple as that, Bungie nailed the control and feel. There are few pleasures that rival feeling the controller vibrate in your hands as you unload an assault rifle clip into an Elite.
The weapons give you a good selection of options on dealing with enemies. For example the Jackals have a sheild that can deflect bullets. You can either overload their sheild with a charged plasma pistol, lob a grenade at them or just run up and beat them.
The stages start off varied and unique, with my absolute favorite being "the silent cartographer". Unfortunately around the halfway point you can tell the devs were crunched for time. You start seeing the same environments from previous levels popping up and run through the same copy pasted room again and again.
Combat also becomes less varied when the flood are introduced. The parasitic enemy mainly consists of infected who charge towards you and little spores that try to jump you. The game basically locks you into using the shotgun to 1 hit kill the big guys and the assault rifle to pop the spores.
The final stage sees you racing in a warthog against the clock to evacuate before your ship destroys the ring. I still remember the first time I playing, I was extremely tense and struggling hard against the vehicle controls. I was kinda dumb as a kid and didn't usually beat games so I felt really proud of myself as I watched Halo go boom, even if I was playing on easy.
Despite the flaws in the later portions of the game, I was hooked. I was officially a Halo megafan, constantly replaying the campaign and playing multiplayer with my friend and cousin. And ofcourse it only made me want to experience Halo 2 even more. The e3 trailers were included in newer printings of CE and I'd watch them constantly.
Eventually I'd finally get to play it but that's a story for another time. Tl;dr Halo's fucking good.

Features that we should see in Halo 2 Firefight
With the new updates of Halo MCC’s firefight, I think now is a better time than ever to point this out. For those who don’t know, MCC has added the ability to use boons in Halo 3 ODST’s firefight. Boons include the ability to fight alongside AI allies such as marines, police officers, and spec ops elites. Halo 3 ODST also now has a flood firefight mode where players take on waves of flood.
Tumblr media
When MCC first came out, a lot of people were hoping for a Halo 2 Firefight mode. There was a firefight mode for Halo CE Anniversary, but I must admit that the Halo CE firefight wasn’t quite what I was looking for. I noticed CE’s firefight was just another version of Reach firefight. The mode had ODSTs that had reduced health and were effectively useless as allies and only one map. It also included Reach AI and mechanics which made it feel nothing like Halo CE.
In my opinion, the CE firefight should have included multiple maps and CE AI to battle against. Allies should have been a squad of traditional CE marines. However, that time has passed and Halo 2 has a chance to fix the mistakes that were made before. The chances of something like this happening may not be high because the AI system used in Halo 2 is very specific, but it’s worth a try to ask.
When I was initially thinking about this thread, I wanted to make a post about why Halo 2 Firefight should be added. But I’ve instead decided that I can better explain that by just mentioning the features that should be present in such a firefight mode. By looking at these features, people can see why this firefight would be awesome.
1. Friendly AI
While I think that a squad of ODST AI would be the most fitting Halo 2 marines could also make good allies. Characters like Sergeant Stacker are entertaining and have unique dialogue lines that make them stand out as useful allies.
Players can get a squad of five marines or ODST (depending on the map) as allies at the beginning of the match. Friendly Ai consist of one allies with a variety of weapons (one with a shot gun, one with a sniper rifle, two with SMGs, and two with battle rifles). The players can get three AI to assist when reinforcements come.
Tumblr media
2. Maps
There should be at least five maps. Maps could be entirely new or modified versions of original Halo 2 locations. Ideas include:
-Gravemind (the first place where you fight)
-High Charity (the last place where you fight or one of the open battle areas before then)
Tumblr media
-Cairo Station (where the mission initially starts or one of the large open areas you fought in later)
Tumblr media
-Outskirts (based on where the mission began at)
Tumblr media
-Delta Halo (where you first defended against phantoms)
Tumblr media
-Regret (where you fight the Prophet)
Tumblr media
-Uprising (outdoors)
Tumblr media
-Great Journey (Indoors)
Tumblr media
3. Obstacles
Below is a list of several obstacles we could enjoy.
OUTDOORS (Uprising, Delta Halo):
-Ghosts
-Phantoms
-Wraiths (are a lot less annoying than the ones in Halo 3 ODST firefight)
-Banshees (are incredibly annoying)
-Jackal Snipers (yikes)
INDOORS:
There shouldn’t be any obstacles in these modes, but infantry will be more overwhelming in these versions (because you’ll have to fight them in close range). Enemy AI will travel through doors.
4. Map Differences
In outdoor battles players can use certain things that they can’t indoors. But players may get higher varieties of weapons indoors (rockets, sniper rifles). Things that players can utilize in outdoor matches are listed below.
Outdoors:
-Mounted Machinegun Turrets
-Warthogs (With standard or heavy anti-vehicle turrets)
5. Spawned Weapons
In this mode characters can spawn with basic weapons like a submachine gun as the primary weapon, a battle rifle as the secondary weapon, and two frag grenades. Keep in mind, players can pick up weapons from enemies they defeat.
6. Health System
Unlike in Halo ODST and Reach firefight, this would be the only Halo Firefight mode with a classic Halo health system. The biggest difference between Halo CE, 2, and 3′s classic health system and the ones in some of the other Halo games is that your health is almost entirely based on shields. Once your shields go down, your health is practically nothing. But shields can always recharge.
Whereas in ODST you don’t have shields, but your health can still regenerate if it doesn’t take a certain level of damage.
7. AI Waves
This is the most special part of the Halo 2 Firefight mode and brings the most value to the mode.
PATROLS:
Elite patrol: Elite minors, majors, and ultras with grunt minors, majors, and ultras. Elites use plasma rifles, needlers, and carbines.
(Elite ultras have stronger shields than other elites and can switch to energy swords in close combat. Ultra grunts throw grenades more frequently.)
Tumblr media
Brute patrol:
Brute minors, majors, and captains with grunt minors, majors, and ultras. Brutes go beserk when their allies are killed. Beserk mode makes them difficult to defeat in close combat.
(Brute minors can be headshot more quickly because they don’t have helmets. Majors and captains have helmets and captains often have brute shots which are deadly grenade launchers).
Tumblr media
Buggers:
These are flying creatures that many people mistakenly think came form Halo 3. In reality, they were first used in Halo 2. Buggers use a combination of plasma pistols and needlers in battle. They are particularly overwhelming in combat. Some buggers could be given plasma rifles in firefight to enhance gameplay.
Tumblr media
Brutes and Buggers:
Brute minors, majors, and captains as well as a wave of buggers.  Elites use plasma pistols, needlers, and plasma rifles.
Elites and Buggers:
Elite minors, majors, ultras, and buggers to assist them.  Elites use plasma rifles, needlers, and carbines. Buggers use plasma pistols, needlers, and plasma rifles.
Elite Rangers:
Elites with jetpacks and plasma rifles (most will have single plasma rifles and a few will have dual plasma rifles).
Tumblr media
Hunter Assault Team:
Two hunters (heavy Covenant fighters), grunts, and jackals.
Tumblr media
Elites and Jackals:
Elite minors, majors, and ultras and jackal minors, majors, and snipers working side by side.  Elites use plasma rifles, needlers, and carbines.
(Halo 2 jackal snipers are particularly special because they are incredibly accurate on legendary and have quick reflexes).
Tumblr media
Jackal Snipers:
As stated before, Halo 2 Jackal snipers are legendary. this wave consists of jackals with carbines and beam rifles.
Tumblr media
Stealth Elites and Grunts:
These elites have brown armor and are invisible in combat. The same is true for their grunts. Stealth elites use plasma rifles, carbines, needlers, dual plasma rifles, and energy swords. Stealth grunts use plasma pistols and needlers.
Tumblr media
Spec Ops Elites and Grunts:
Elites with purple armor that throw grenades frequently in combat. These elites use a combination of plasma rifles, needlers, carbines, beam rifles, and energy swords. Spec ops grunts use grenades more frequently and also have purple armor. Spec grunts use plasma pistols, needlers, and fuel rod guns.
Tumblr media
8. Boss Waves
ZEALOTS: These elites have gold armor. Zealots use a mixture of energy swords (like in campaign), dual plasma rifles, and dual needlers. The dual plasma rifles and needlers is a natural fit for zealots because their AI automatically shoot faster than normal elites. With dual weapons, they would be overwhelming in combat. Zealots have more aggressive tactics than normal elites.
I was thinking eight zealots in total. Two with energy swords, two with dual plasma rifles, two with fuel rod guns that are modified to switch to energy swords in close range, and two with dual needlers. Zealots switching to swords makes them more similar to Field Marshals in Halo Reach but it also works because we’ve seen Halo Reach add some slightly different variants of Elite Generals in Firefight (Generals with plasma cannons which aren’t in campaign).
Tumblr media
BRUTE HONOR GUARDS: This makes sense because they’re often the leaders of brutes in campaign. This can include honor guards with brute plasma rifles, shot guns, brute shots, and carbines.
Tumblr media
REGRET: The Prophet Regret could be a bonus boss. He’s someone you fight in Halo 2. He can be killed by boarding his vehicle and shoots laser beams at his opponents. Regret has several grunts and elite honor guards that assist him. Regret’s honor guards use plasma rifles, energy swords, dual plasma rifles, and carbines in combat.
HERETICS: The heretic leader has dual plasma rifles and a jetpack. He has grunts with needlers as an escort. He also has elites with carbines, energy swords, and beam rifles as his escort.
Tumblr media
TRUTH: This could be a bonus boss. He’s a reskinned Regret with the firepower of a ghost instead of using a laser beam and different dialogue lines. Truth could have brute honor guards and jackals as a defense team. The jackals use needlers and plasma rifles while the brute honor guards use plasma rifles, brute shots, carbines, and shotguns.
TARTARUS: Tartarus will be weaker in firefight. In this mode he’ll have the same health as a brute honor guard (which is similar to a shielded elite major), but he’ll also have shields on top of that which are equal to an elite major. That would make his health in total being about the same as an ultra but with half of it being rechargeable shields and the other half being heatlh (while most ultra resilence is in shields and not health).
Tartarus has a high damage output but limited range and is a bit slower than elites. However, Tartarus can dive after his enemies in combat. Tartarus will have several brutes of various ranks by his side (two minors, two majors, two captains, and two honor guards). The brutes with him will use a mix of brute plasma rifles, carbines, shotguns, and brute shots.
Tumblr media
ELITE STRIKE TEAM: An elite strike team will consist of one zealot leader (who will either have an energy sword, dual plasma rifles, fuel rod guns with a modified sword beserk ability, or dual needlers). Although halo 2 zealots have less health than other variants, I would not underestimate halo 2 zealots with dual needlers or plasma rifles because zealots actually shoot faster than the other elite variants (as well as rangers and spec ops elites). The zealots also fight more aggressive which would make them overwhelming with those weapons.
The strike team will also include two ultra elites, three elite majors, and three minors.
9. Skulls
Skulls are gameplay modifiers that make AI different and they can also change a player’s abilities. The skulls would be the same as the typical Halo 2 campaign ones.
Notable skulls:
-Anger (faster rate of fire)
-Grunt Birthday Party (grunts die in explosion of confetti)
-Feather (change in physics mechanics, similar to cowbell in Halo 3)
-Mythic (increased enemy health)
-Catch (enemies use more grenades)
-Scarab gun (guns cause extra damage when fired)
-PInata (enemies drop grenades when meleed)
-Thunderstorm (all minors and majors become ultras, ultras have extra health and switch to energy swords when enemies get close).
10. Zealot Buff
I described how some of the zealots would use different weapons than in campaign (where they only use energy swords). But there is another buff that would be added to them. We notice in Halo Reach that zealots can take about 25 standard shield shots before they go down. With the highest health (along with Generals and Field Marshals) of all the elite ranks. In Halo 2, Ultras get around 35 standard shots before they drop.
The best solution would be to either give zealots 25 standard shield shots (between halo 2 major and ultra health) so that they can be a new unique challenge. While they have less health than ultras, they fight more aggressively and can be more overwhelming with the health they do have. Zealots also seem to be a bit faster than other elite variants, but their paper shields in the halo 2 campaign wouldn’t do them much justice as bosses (though they are always cool to see).
A different option would be to give zealots 20 standard shield shots. Which is a bit over a major but is below what their health in Reach. It is exactly equal to their health in Halo CE. The Zealots could also have a 200 percent shield recharge rate and could get 200% health (10 shots instead of 5 before death). This would make zealots even more distinct from other elite ranks in how they function.
The second option would also zealots operate a bit more like stealth elites. Which have slightly weaker shields but more health than elite minors and a faster recharge rate. It often works for them because they fight more defensively and have active camo. However, the zealots could benefit from this style because it would allow them to recover more quickly from intense fights and adjust during prolonged showdowns while sacrificing some resilience (which is more useful during initial fights against players).
CONCLUSION:
So let’s make it happen. This mode would be so fun. They could add it as a DLC for $5-$8.
With friendly AI, it would be just as fun as campaign and players could keep replaying it. Players could have up to four friends to fight with at a time, which would be nice because you can only fight with up to two players at a time in Halo 2′s CO-OP mode.

Okay! All done with "Fallout: New Vegas"!
I min-maxed my character too hard and accidentally optimised all the fun out of the game! Whoops! My bad!
(I did it twice, in fact! Got bored with my first Guns/Explosives sneaky guy, so I made a new character in hardcore mode and restarted the game to play as an Energy Weapons/power-armor guy)
((when will I finally learn to play a video game without having its wiki open on my phone the whole time? Scientists are unsure!))
This was my first hardcore-mode playthrough, and it was also the first time I ever learned that you actually CAN have two companions at the same time in New Vegas! it just has to be one humanoid and one NON-humanoid!
So I no longer had to choose between Ed-E, my beloved; or Arcade Gannon, my Doctor Boyfriend; but could have both of them with me together at the same time!
Which was lovely!
But the game got even more ridiculously stupidly easy from that point.
Because as much fun as it was to have Doctor Boyfriend and I tromping around the countryside in our matching suits of Remnants Power-Armor with our beloved pet Eyebot by our side, doing an Indomitable Antifa Genocide while also caving in the skull of an Old World billionaire with a golf club for funsies on the side...
...it wasn't THAT fun.
Once you can vaporise any enemy in the entire game in under a second, everything just kinda loses its allure.
Even hardcore-mode stopped being hardcore role-playing and just started being an extra set of menu-clicking chores. No thoughtfulness or tough decisions required.
Was absolutely drowning in caps from all those Legion hit-squads that kept manifesting themselves for Gatling Laser Target Practice, too.
"the kAiSaR has marked you for death!"
Oh word? Pretty brave talk from some dorkass cosplay loser armed with naught but a few pointy sticks against the supreme pinnacle of the Old World's military might. World War 4 technology versus World War 3 technology? Get vaporised, idiot. 💥
But yeah, only level 29 yet most of my skills were at level 100, my DT was 46, and my primary weapon could throw out like 510+dps or something ludicrous like that.
God mode.
Might as well just explode random ragdolls in a level-editor at that point. 🤷🏻‍♂️
---
And speaking of exploding ragdolls, next up I'll be playing through the Halo franchise for the first time!
Picked up CE Anniversary, 2, 3, and 4 from pawn shops over the last two weeks.
I played CE on a borrowed gaming PC back when it came out, but was too poor to be a console gamer for the rest of them, so I never got to experience the rest of the story or the series' gameplay developments.
I did play a 2d fan-game prequel tho. That was pretty fun! Forget about that entirely until just now.
Probably will have to wait until after this weekend's heatwave passes though. This old 360 really starts chugging once it heats up. Every time New Vegas crashed or glitched out, I'd feel the side of the Xbox and sure enough that thing would be running a fever 🥵
I think while I wait I'll open up the 360 and see how much dust I can clear out of its cooling system. I expect there'll be generous amounts up in there...

congrats on the legendary clear!!
Thanks!! I beat 3, ODST, and Reach on legendary a few years ago without much trouble, but it took me forever to finally git gud at CE. Treating the plasma pistol as a primary weapon was honestly a game changer because that thang was an absolute BEAST in that campaign (especially with my new Elite controller's hair trigger setting which made it easier to rapid fire) and it carried me through some really rough sections. But the biggest help was going into it with the right mindset; I've matured a lot as a person since the last time I attempted that legendary run, so it was a lot easier to be patient and learn from my mistakes (with only a *little* bit of raging this time.) Now we just have to see how long it takes for me to develop the mental fortitude for Halo 2 and its Jackal snipers lol

I still can't launch Mass Effect: Andromeda without my computer going
💀No thanks💀
but at least the MCC can still launch and play (most of the time 👀). So I've been working on some solo achievements that I didn't think I would be able to get, namely the par scores. I went through and tried some of my favorite levels of Halo 2, 3, and Reach (sorry, 4, there is no level of you that I enjoy playing to that degree 🤷‍♀️ and I already have the ones on CE and ODST that I wanted to try for) and was actually able to get them! 🥳🥳🥳
And then. I realized I had 5 of the 9 levels of Reach, by FAR the most par scores than on any other game. And so I decided to try for "We'll Be Back" Beat the par score on every Halo: Reach level.
If you've ever tried this, well, either you're going
Tumblr media
or you're just a much better player than I am, lol. Par score means you have to beat the par time but on a higher difficulty with tougher enemies and you can't just run by everybody, you've got to take 'em out to get the points.
"The Pillar of Autumn" was one that I'd struggled to get the par time on before (and that was on Easy so... 👀) but I got the par score on the second try. 🥳 That was a total shock!
I thought I'd get stalled on "Long Night of Solace" but I've gotten much better at the sabre section and blasted my way to victory after a few tries. (It was actually the fight on the Covvie ship after that that kept delaying me until the par time ran out and then your points begin frickin' to roll backwards to practically 0, ARGH.)
But then: "Exodus" and "The Package."
If those two levels just brought fear to your heart, then yeah, you've tried this achievement before.
ZOH MAH GUH. These levels are sooooo long *that's what she said joke goes here* 😜 and require stupidly high amounts of points: "Exodus" 20 minutes par time, 30,000 par score, "The Package" 20 minutes par time, 65,000 par score.
Tumblr media
I didn't even get remotely close to par time or score my first dozen attempts at both of these levels. I tried different combinations of Normal + a bunch of skulls to raise the difficulty and Heroic + fewer skulls. I finally went with Heroic + fewer for "Exodus" annnnd after many, many times jetpacking my way to absolute failure trying to do the mid-level fight skip, I would make it to the last battle and my score would drain out because I went past the par time.
😑
That was legit my expression.
But then, I kept working at it, got better at doing the skip. Figured out how to jetpack up the building to do another skip (there's a trick to briefly stopping your jetpack halfway up, then starting again that will - eventually after much trial and error, falling to your death and cursing like a sailor 🤬😇😉 - let you get up to a higher place than you technically can in one jetpack burst). Then it was a matter of optimizing that final fight section where you have to activate two switches, then a final third. I died SO MANY TIMES trying to get to that last switch. Then I discovered you can jetpack up the outside of the room, go through the window, try not to get ABSOLUTELY OBLITERATED by the Hammer Chieftain Brute waiting for you, and hit the switch! I finally made the par score, woo-hoo!!!
And that left "The Package" and its monstrous 65,000 par score.
Playing on Normal with almost all of the skulls, despite seeing Youtube guides of other people managing it easily, just didn't work for me. I couldn't get nearly enough points. So I finally had to go with Heroic and almost all of the skulls on. That was painful but better than trying Legendary with no skulls and then I'd get my face melted off in the first section with the two turrets, the sniper Jackal with the focus rifle, the two fuel-rod Grunts and the 2 Grunts in the Ghosts. MY ABSOLUTE WORD, FRENS. My face got melted off SO MUCH. 😑
I learned speedrunning tricks I'd only heard of before and never thought to even try. I figured out how to run up the frickin' center support columns and do weird curving crouch jumps to 2 platforms just to avoid fighting a ginormous bunch of Jackals. I did the bounce trick where you sprint onto a sculpture, bounce up to a higher point on it, then jump for the window, crash through it and get to the Halsey's lab firefight without having to fight the camo Elites and that one Really Annoying General Elite™ with the concussion rifle.
(GAHHHHHHH, that dude blasted me SO MANY TIMES. And if throws a plasma grenade in your general direction? GOODBYE. HE DOES NOT MISS.)
You lose the points from those fights but if you're struggling for par time and you're already at about 50k points or so going into the firefight section, it was worth it.
youtube
I can't record but here are the 2 tricks at 3:46 and 4:36 (I had to jump to the higher level of the sculpture and crash through the window more to the left, I couldn't do it in one jump like Vodred does but I still could eventually make it about 3 out of 4 times, depending on if a camo Elite spawned standing RIGHT IN MY PATH. 😑)
I finally made it through to the Halsey's lab section at under 10 minutes. The following firefight is almost impossible to speed through at less than 10 minutes on its own because you have to wait for each wave of enemies to come in before you can clear them.
(I saw the world record holder do some amazing speedrun tricks to destroy the Phantoms as they come in to bring the enemies but, yeah, it was taking so long to try to learn that, I finally figured it was faster just to figure out how to fight them more efficiently.)
I did learn to reliably hijack a Banshee in mid-air thanks to my cool new jetpacking skills learned on "Exodus," at least. 😉
And then I got shot out of the sky SO MANY TIMES by those dang Jackals and Grunts and their overcharged plasma pistols. MY WORD. I worked a few different strategies, changing the Banshee for the Wraith and finishing the level like that or choosing to destroy the Wraith for the points and stay more maneuverable in the Banshee. I honestly thought the second strat was going to be the one that worked for me but MY STARS THOSE OVERCHARGED PLASMA PISTOLS ARRRGH.
I would get an enormous amount of points - once over 120k! - only to watch it drain to 16k because I couldn't finish the level even close to the par time. I was so sad on that one, frens, I can't even. 😭😭😭
But then, last night, I decided to try one last run before I went off to try to become a slightly more productive member of society. 😜 And I fought my little heart out, doing a combo of speedrun tricks and stand-and-fight to get points. And I out of the corner of my eye, I saw the timer at 19 minutes and change and the last wave was just dropping. 😱 I had over 110k points at this time but would start losing them quickly once we reached 20 minutes.
I was in the Wraith, which is powerful but moves slooooowly, down at the bottom of the map to take out the first of the last 3 Phantoms. I mortar bombed the other Wraith just as it was dropped off. I sped as fast as my Wraith could go - approximately the speed of molasses sliiiiiding down a hill in the sunlight 😑 - back up the map. I mortar bombed THE HECK out of everybody in the middle, trying desperately to be not only fast but to catch them grouped together for the multi-kill bonus points I knew I was going to need to inflate my score as high as possible against the going over par time penalty.
I see the timer hit 20, then 21. I stop looking and decide just to finish the fight™ (Master Chief John-117 😇😉) and see how close I could get.
I hear Dr. Halsey say, "Well done, Spartans. I'm opening the laboratory door," which is your cue to go and push the button (why the rest of Noble Team, who are STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE BUTTON can't do that on their own, I DUNNO). I have an Elite dancing around my mortar bombs as I'm Wraithing my way slooooowly towards the door. I glance down and see I have 90K POINTS LEFT, ZOMG. I do this stupid panic jump out of the Wraith without killing the Elite.
He starts shooting me. I JETPACK INTO THE SKY for some reason because I apparently forgot I have the jetpack on and not the sprint, lol.
He's still shooting at me. My shields are lighting up. I'm awkwardly jetpacking straight at Carter, mentally begging my beloved Noble One TO SAVE ME.
I land behind him and he provided accidental cover for me, actually getting shot by the Elite in my place.
Tumblr media
Carter, my beloved.
ANYWAY, I'm doing this SUPER AWKWARD jetpack bursting hop thing towards that dang button because I again have forgotten I DON'T HAVE SPRINT RIGHT NOW, GEEZ. I hear the enemy Wraith on the platform behind me launch a mortar bomb and know that it CAN HIT ME WHERE I'M AT.
Ask me how I know. 😑
But this time, my awkward jetpacking meant I got to the button before the mortar got there and YES YES YES!
Tumblr media
🥳
Tumblr media
Annnnd here are the other par scores I got since I started trying for them last month. (And yes, when I can't sleep, I play Halo. 👀 Don't be an insomniac if you can help it, frens. 😴😉)
So, now I feel like I've accomplished something pretty special, even more than just getting the Legendary achievements because... Wait.
Tumblr media
I wonder...? 🤔🤔🤔 I mean, Reach on Legendary is no party. *points up to that part where I mentioned getting my face melted* This would be a Legendary speedrun but I've learned a LOT of speedrunning tricks and there are a lot of really good guides out there...
Tumblr media
Hm, maybe not. 😑😂
If you read all of this, thank you. I just mainly wanted to share my happiness at having gotten that achievement and since I couldn't include fun GIFs or video clips of it, I had to just be wordy. 🤷‍♀️
Have a cookie, from my heart to yours.

All of my Doom posting (hehe) has actually been relevant.
Because I played through Doom (2016) again recently on Nightmare and drove myself insane.
This was a lot more challenging than I remember, and it made me realize I dislike some of the new lore added into it and Eternal.
Around the halfway point, I decided to try the House of Pain mission from classic Doom remade into 2016. It took an hour and drove me to never want to touch a classic map again.
It was fun, it was challenging, but that was worse than Halo CE’s The Library as far as difficulty goes (mostly due to the Cacodemons camping by the doors about halfway through)
The standard campaign had the right challenge level, even if I died a lot. Though a lot of my loading screen time was attributed to me grinding weapon mods and mission challenges.
Maybe it is Eternal’s influence (way easier), but 2016 demons seem way tankier. Those are guys I can believe could slaughter an entire facility of people. Eternal’s demons? Mmm… don’t see it. Not with those blatant weak points.

cocoa.
| regulus black x reader | fluff |
anon requested. drinking cocao while doing sleepy talk
cw: slightly steamy, no actual smut, smoking
Tumblr media
“Oh, pretty baby, now that I've found you, stay, and let me love you, baby,” your soft singing soothed Regulus as you gently combed your fingers through his hair.
His head rested in your lap, the boy curled up on the floor between your legs, hiding in the limbs as if it would protect him from fright.
He’d come into your room a mess. Overwhelmed and in tears, but you’d managed to calm him down to a sedated state of peace. His breathing had evened out, and he sat completely still as he listened to the song you sang him whenever the feelings grew to be too much.
“Baby, can I make you some cocoa?” You questioned softly, pressing a kiss to his forehead, right along the line of worry that had found its home among his gorgeous features.
“I’ll make it,” he tipped his head back to accept a kiss, his tongue sliding against yours in the messy, lazy movement.
You sank back into the couch as he stood, pulling the blanket over your tired limbs. You watched as he started the kettle on the small stove, only a few meters away in the small studio apartment. You hummed softly, the song still floating through your mind.
He listened to you as he made the drinks, watching you change for bed, into your usual sleep attire of just one of his t-shirts. Really, it was an old band shirt stolen from Sirius, but he always admired it more on you.
Regulus exhaled a deep breath as you wrapped your arms around him from behind, kissing his spine through his thin white tee and murmuring something incoherent.
“Qu'est-ce que vous avez dit?” Regulus hummed softly, asking you what you said.
“I said that I’m sleepy,” you yawned, making him smile as he poured the drink into cups.
“Mon amour,” he smiled against your lips, kissing you tenderly.
“Go get in bed, then, I’ll bring it to you.”
You peeled yourself off of his body, crossing the room to crawl into the fluffy bed, pushing the extra pillows onto the floor. He set down the drink in your hands once you were settled, sitting down near your feet and lifting the chocolate to his lips.
“Have you got class tomorrow?” Regulus asked, watching you lick the chocolate from your lips.
“No, I’ve got the day off,” you shook your head.
“Might have to spend it with me.”
“I’d love to.”
“You’ve got a little,” he gestured at your mouth, indicating there was chocolate smeared over your lips.
You frowned, and he leaned in and gently kissed it off of your skin, every movement of his so soft. You blindly set your drink aside along with his before swinging your leg over his lap.
Regulus lowered down to his back, pulling you to lay on top of him, your lips still moving in slow, lazy sync. His long, slender hands slid up the backs of your bare thighs, coming to squeeze your bum. You moaned, allowing his tongue to slide into your mouth, warmth blooming through you.
Your drinks were quickly forgotten as you lost yourself in him, melting into his body and allowing him to fill your senses. You were so in love, and everything was soft, the heady atmosphere melting into pure pleasure.
.
His curls formed a dark halo around his head as he dropped back against the mattress, you still comfortably curled up on his body. He reached into the bedside table, one hand still resting on your back, his fingertips tracing the dips in your spine.
He pulled a box out and popped it open with one hand, pulling a cigarette out with his teeth before dropping it back in the drawer. You glanced up at him with hooded eyes, nearly asleep as you curled up tighter on his chest.
“Y’alright?” he asked, taking the lighter and snapping the flame, lighting the end of the cigarette.
You nodded, relaxing as his hand moved to your head, gently ruffling your hair and massaging your scalp. He tipped his head back and blew rings of smoke into the hazy air, watching them dissipate as his nerves calmed.
“No, they’re bad for you,” he scolded gently, fingers brushing over your face when you asked for a drag.
“Regulus-”
“Darling,” he put it out, pressing his lips to yours and exhaling the tangy smoke into your mouth. It was just enough to sedate you and get you to hush, and he spent the next half hour lulling you to sleep with fingers tracing your back.

Spartan II and III: Thoughts on Scarring
After reading this post made by @ladywolvesbayne answering an ask regarding Spartan facial scarring, every still-functioning center of my brain lit up like a switchboard and I was driven on pure instinct to write this. I kind of love discussing this topic, and as someone who likes to draw many scars on Spartan faces, I’ll offer that I tend to give S-IIs and S-IIIs heavier facial scarring for several reasons and considerations. ‘ U ‘
Fair warning: just beneath the cut is a long post with lots of lore discussion regarding augmentation, armor usage and some brief history, as well as plenty of my own extrapolations and personal ideas on the subjects! (If only my fics could come to me as shockingly easy as this did!) I definitely got carried away in laying out all my thoughts for this, but I do have very many of these thoughts, and this post had me quite excited. ; U ;
(tw: for mentions of grievous injury, scarring, and some medical discussion.)
For the S-IIs, I think it’s very easy to forget that even after they were given MJOLNIR, the Gen IV they were wearing didn’t have any energy shielding until around the last couple years of the Covenant War. Shields are so ubiquitous and commonplace in the Halo landscape that I think that detail always goes forgotten. It’s wild really, knowing the S-IIs spent over two and a half decades with no insurance policy, running high-risk engagements against overwhelming Covenant forces who fought with weapons and tech the UNSC just wasn’t prepared to defend against. The continuous injuries they were suffering were more or less handwaved in the long run though, since the alternative without MJOLNIR at all would have been death, augmentations be damned.
Stepping backward from the war, like @ladywolvesbayne mentioned, the S-IIs have been surrounded by physical stress and combat in one form or another since they were 6 years old, and were routinely getting hurt during their training days. Following that, they spent several years in the field running ultra classified missions wearing what was basically a hardened techsuit. Spartans were the secret weapons used by ONI for making big plays during conflicts with the Insurrectionists, and these slimmed down hardsuits offered them more silence and concealment than they did physical protection. In the short Fall of Reach film adaptation, we see that these suits are easily penetrated by small arms fire, when John takes a bullet defending Sam.
I also like to use character’s canon injuries as a base, and work alongside those to figure out where I’ll add additional scarring if it feels appropriate to me. Fred’s large scar over his scalp is pretty characteristic to him, though it’s from an unknown incident. Whatever caused it though was significant enough to open the tissue to such a degree that even decades later the scarring remains wide and ragged. That suggests that the front and side of his head was pretty dramatically opened at some point, and not at all cleanly; possibly the result of extreme blunt force trauma at velocity, or partially explosive ballistic damage. Speaking of awful head wounds (and plenty of those run in the Blue Team family), Linda is likely sporting immediately visible evidence of head trauma from the events of Reach Station Gamma, where her skull was penetrated by plasma fire punching though the backside of her helmet and boiling away tissue. The injury landed her in a state of clinical death that she endured in cryo-suspension until her recovery after the events of Installation 04 (Halo CE). Beside my own imaginings, John has some notable scars that I like to include - from the place at the back of his neck where a Flood infection form had tried to assimilate him, to the childhood scar on his chin. Most else I tend to either add from my memories of his experiences through the books, or just what I feel like is fitting for all the insane misadventure that man has found himself in. Kelly has suffered some significant injuries that are detailed in the books, though nothing too specific to her face that I can recall (certainly plenty to her limbs - often her arms - and chest). Who knows, maybe this is actually a credit to the Hermes helmet she favours! Causing more incoming fire to glance or splash away, and to give her a more forgiving intrusion space between her face and the faceshield itself.
With regard to the S-IIIs, they’ve had less service time than IIs of course, but when you consider the brutality and desperation of the missions they’re deployed to (or were being prepared to handle) it’s almost inevitable that - if they survive - they will be coming home with plenty of horrible wounds to scar over. Unfortunately, not many survive. When you consider Operations like PROMETHEUS and TORPEDO, with their near total fatality rates, it seems almost petty to worry about the physical scars more than the mental ones. Though I have no doubts the physical wounds were many.
Gamma Company S-IIIs weren’t subjected to the Covenant War, but they did suffer the Onyx Conflict, with most members of the Company ranging between the ages of around 9-12. None of them had ever experienced true live combat before then, and their lack of experience funneled into many severe injuries and losses. Though again, it bears repeating, that the trauma they endured most significantly was once again mental; effectually losing yet another family and home.
Gammas are also the only Company of S-IIIs to receive the illicit mutagenic neural augs, identified as: 009762-OO. This mutagen created organic changes to the Gammas’ frontal lobes, allowing them continued combat function through the biological effects of hypovolemic shock after grievous injury, or potentially triggered by rapid and overstimulated adrenaline (Possibly all other forms of shock as well, but I think they’d be less likely to face them). Worse yet, in this state the Gammas display hugely increased strength and endurance metrics, since they’re in no way restricted by pain responses or the damaging strains of their own bodies - they’ll snap their own bones and not stop. The hyper-aggression they experience during these “blood rages” is basically blind, leaving them even more vulnerable while they make no meaningful attempt to defend or protect themselves. Death is the common outcome. If the opposition doesn’t kill them first, the raging S-III typically faces multi-system organ failure and/or excessive volume blood loss. The survivors however, wouldn’t come away clean, and probably wouldn’t know how they’d suffered until mentally stabilizing.
Another factor for heavy scarring on surviving S-IIIs could be related to their use of SPI armor, instead of MJOLNIR. SPI is not outfitted with energy shielding, nor does it provide any of the physical enhancements offered with MJOLNIR - it’s not equipped with the same motorized joint system, and not operated in tandem with neural connectivity; so no amplified strength, speed, or reaction time. They’re running on their own ability. This is because SPI isn’t intended for extended use, but for short term ‘shock’ assaults that rely heavily on maintaining the element of surprise. In Ghosts of Onyx, Ash gets quietly reprimanded by Kurt for taking his helmet off for a brief moment in a conflict zone. Nylund reminds the reader of how ragged Ash looks in the moment, he’s coated and dripping in sweat and worn to the bone. SPI just doesn’t have the same durable livability that MJOLNIR does, and this leads to exhausting it’s wearer more quickly, dehydrating them and leading to reduced reaction times or poor awareness - all vectors for increased risk of injury. So what on earth is the benefit of SPI at all? Well, it’s still more durable than ODST gear, and they still have a liquid nanocrystal ballistic layer to absorb some impact, but it’s main draw is it’s lightness and covert capability. SPI has a rather advanced camouflage system of photoreactive panels to render the wearer nearly invisible. Long story (inside of a long story) short: the use of SPI wasn’t helping these kids to avoid cuts and bruises and the scars that would inevitably follow. In the current timeline, it’s noted that the remaining in-service IIIs have been transitioned to MJOLNIR GEN2, except for the Ferrets, who still use SPI.
Funny enough, the scarring I don’t tend to bring too much attention to when I draw S-II or IIIs are their surgical scars, despite that they’re numerous. For the S-IIIs, they underwent mostly similar surgical augmentation, though some procedures were eliminated for redundancy, and they’d receive more chemical and genetic alteration overall. Their surgical augs were also far improved in safety and success of integration than those given to the IIs, thanks to general improvements in tech and the (blood soaked) research gained from the successes and failures of the S-IIs. These improvements could have very well lent themselves to accelerated healing and reduce visibility of surgical scarring.
For the S-IIs, I tend to not draw these surgical scars into my lineart because they’re incredibly old, and surgical scarring tends to be much more clean and precise, so they heal much less visibly. Also, not to gloss over the fact that we’re discussing complex medical procedures some 500 years in the future, in a universe that exists in an era of medical prominence that has eradicated cancer from the modern social memory, and made things like fully-integrated cybernetic prosthesis a reality. Standardized surgical tenants in our modern era already include pretty general methods of preventing long-term presence of scarring, so seeing improvements to that post year 2500 doesn’t seem that far-fetched to me. Add to that the S-IIs improved overall healing, their bodies being maintained at performance standard, and simply time itself - it’s been over 30 years - and you’ve got scarring that, in most places, is probably not terribly visible on a casual glance.
Granted, what was done to them was still extensive, even by their era standards, and was all wildly experimental. I’d think it would be reasonable to assume that anyone who gets close enough and takes any meaningful time to view the S-IIs bodies more intimately would be able to see the actual magnitude of scarring well enough. Specifically in places where a lot of tissue was displaced or manipulated, like the thighs and trunk (chest and back), and in places that required several repeating incisions, like the hands and feet. That said, I don’t colour my work too often and I’d only be inclined to include evidence of surgical scarring by using faded lineless colour to show it. So take that as you will. I do however personally enjoy seeing people draw these scars onto Spartans though! It’s really a humbling reminder of the horrors these people endured at the hands of their own. Not to mention the social cost. It’s a wonder in and of itself that so many IIs display such an enduringly polite, patient, considerate, and gentle nature. Something so frequently juxtaposed to their large and brutally scarred appearances, and oft overlooked as the majority continue to view them as machinery or monsters or idols. = n =
Back on topic! - Probably the most repeatable theme in my work, is that I like to add scarring to eyebrows and lips. I tend to focus on these parts of the face because the skin is very thin in these places, and also difficult to heal without leaving visible reminders. Scarring over eyebrows inhibits regeneration of hair follicles, and trauma to the vermilion of the lips, with how delicately they transition into the flesh of the face and the constant movement of the mouth, can cause fresh tissue damage to continually expand in ‘runs’ into the face (like tears in stockings) until the primary lacerations are sutured and resultant fissures are allowed to fully seal. No matter how well fitted or advanced a helmet is, with the kind of forces Spartans are routinely subjected to, they’re going to be taking damage to their heads and faces; these are usually concussive (blunt or explosive), crushing, or intrusion forces. The thinnest parts of the face are just bound and determined to suffer first - eyebrows, cheekbones, lips, nose bridges, chins, ears, and temples. Recurrent damage to these places would make healing difficult too, though not all wounds would wind up scarring.
Lastly (thanks for hanging in there! ; U ;), I honestly just like to add scarring that I think “makes sense”. Everything written above sort of creates the sum total of my considerations when I’m designing my own sort of personal versions of how I see the characters: development, years of service, equipment use, noted experiences, canon details as a foundation, time, and weighing the averages. Anything beyond that, well…sometimes it’s just a design element I liked! In the end, everyone has their own sort of ‘visions’ of what each character looks like and I think that’s one of the most beautiful aspects of a well-loved series! When people display such a closeness and affection to the characters, enough to have these personal interpretations of them, that’s a kind of love that I think is very special and meaningful to experience! Nobody should ever feel compelled or bullied into adhering strictly to the canon, or to anyone else’s personal interpretations. That said, I think its totally fine to adopt another person’s interpretations because it’s similar to what you see yourself, or because maybe you just like it! It’s never a bad idea to let them know you think so too! I’m sure plenty of people would enjoy hearing it! ‘ w ‘ The canon is fun to discuss and learn and play in - it drew us all here in the first place. But, at the end of the day, it’s just the scaffolding for the many other stories we want to tell and create. ‘ U ‘

Hello! Whenever you’ve got a moment to spare, may I humbly request an info dump about non-traditional storytelling mediums? I’m a bit of a storytelling nerd myself, but I’m still at the “learning as much as humanly possible” stage, so your knowledge would be much appreciated.
One of the things that fascinates me the most about the Dream SMP is that it’s essentially a pick-your-protagonist storytelling model, which I have never seen before (and perhaps has never been done before?). The dynamics and story structures that are created due to this unique format are super interesting to me, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
yes!!
i feel like storytelling is one of the most human things, we're always trying to tell stories, no matter what.
personally, some of my favorite non-traditional storytelling methods come from china. from opera masks that tell the history of a character through color and design to daoist robes like this one from the qing dynasty:
Tumblr media
or this one:
Tumblr media
there's also storytelling through tattoos, like ta moko, which tells the personal history of the bearer! they're considered tapu (sacred) in maori culture.
or stories that are only told at certain times. ojibwe stories are saved for long winter days and nights when the weather was too harsh to go about daily life, especially for kids. my grandpa would tell us kids stories in the winter and it was such a fun time.
but when it comes to modern mediums and methods, my favorite is collaborative storytelling through video games!
one of the biggest examples of a series that basically pioneered this idea was roosterteeth's 'Red vs. Blue'. it was literally just a story told using Halo of all things. it grew later on, of course, but the root of the show was a game, a group of friends, and a story made solely with whatever was in the game.
you want to talk about body language? this where we can see the application of using game mechanics to show mood.
using only the base mechanics of a game that's currently twenty years old, they were able to show at least base emotions like confusion or annoyance, etc.
despite all its flaws, red vs. blue in the first few seasons where they use Halo CE as the story vehicle genuinely helped pave the way for using games as a medium which is honestly one of my favorite non-traditional methods for storytelling.
i don't know where i was going with this, but i adore storytelling and especially when people get together to either share a story with those they meet or to create a story with their friends, building a world as they go.

I think Thel goes through the five stages of grief
Okay because of my "five stages of grief but they're sangheili" post, I started thinking and realized this (probably not too original of an interpretation but whatever I only just now noticed it so I'm sharing it).
For context: I'm referring to Thel's arc of realizing the Covenant is full of shit. Also even though I'll be describing the stages in order as they're usually listed, I don't think Thel goes through them in that order.
Now, it could actually be argued that the denial stage lasts longer than not only the Gravemind cutscene, but long before Halo 2. This is due to The Cole Protocol, when is faced of the possibility of being killed by the Prophets just because they made a mistake and have to cut off loose ends. His friend, in the face of this realization, defends himself by trying to kill them; but Thel sticks by his faith and kills his close friend. It's this action that rewards him with keeping his life, but by the end of the book, it can be seen that that whole situation has still shaken him. Yet despite that, he continues to serve the Covenant loyally. He denies that anything could be wrong, even though he just faced evidence of that heresy. Another moment in canon that could be considered a challenge of his faith is his struggles to cooperate with the Prophet assigned to his fleet during Halo CE/Halo: The Flood, partially leading to the failure he alone had to answer for at the start of Halo 2.
Anger is a bit more straight to the point: he's impatient with the Gravemind and he's still noticeably upset with the Chief.
Next is bargaining. The most obvious is the alliances he makes in the last few missions of the game: first with the Gravemind (a bit unwillingly) and then with Johnson. He also attempts to talk Tartarus down rather than immediately take him out.
Depression, I feel, is either kinda zig-zaggy with Thel or constantly present in his journey. At first he's mopey inbetween his trial and his ascent to Arbiter. He's also kind of self-loathing and suicidal throughout the game - most notable in his first two playable missions. I also feel there's a bit a sadness present during his conversation with Tartarus and even as he enters the "acceptance" stage.
Acceptance starts with the line: "Tartarus...the Prophets have betrayed us." Despite his goal of stopping Tartarus from firing the Rings, it's never stated until now that his motivation is that he's realized the truth about Halo; it can easily be assumed he simply wants revenge. Here he finally puts into words the realization that's slowly been building up since the Gravemind cutscene. From this point on, he doesn't follow any Forerunner-based religions and even quickly changes his opinions on things that the Covenant drilled into him (ie: humanity).
I don't have any idea how to neatly conclude this post besides goddammit how I love this character.
