The Olympic Village Beijing, China

Her heart wouldn't stop its erratic thump-thumping. As she got out of the bath, wrapped herself up in a fluffy white towel, and threw herself onto the downy comforter, she couldn't help but try to trace her footsteps back; take deep breaths and try to calm herself down.

It was to no avail; the post-Olympic high was still going strong, and there was nothing Y/N could do to calm it down. She didn't know if she wanted to, even if the rapid breathing was getting annoying. She didn't know if she wanted to forget a moment more of this experience.

It had been such a wild ride, coming to Beijing. Y/N had never expected that something like this would happen to her. She'd never even predicted it in her wildest dreams. This had been something Cassie had always longed for, something Cassie had worked her whole life for, and somehow, the opportunity and the medal had been handed to Y/N. It didn't make sense.

She felt guilty for usurping that chance from her best friend, even if it was for sure that Cassie would make it onto the Olympic team in 2026 (It definitely wasn't for sure, but Y/N had to tell herself something to stymie the overwhelming contrition that flooded her every time she thought of Cassie getting fourth place at Nationals). Furthermore, she felt guilty for being where she was now, with so much less experience than her competitors.

Most people started ice skating at five or six. That was when Y/N had gotten her first pair of skates too, but she'd abandoned the sport until she was sixteen; until Cassie had graduated from the junior division to the senior, and had started seriously competing. Y/N had only started doing it as a joke, as a way to release tension from schoolwork and AP tests, but it had evolved into something else. Slowly, she'd realized that she actually enjoyed it, that skating on ice was akin to floating, or even flying. And then it became her passion, and - eventually - her job.

Y/N was here now, in Beijing. She had an Olympic bronze medal, a team gold medal (if the doping investigations would ever conclude), and a new fanbase who were eager and willing to be influenced by her, which was terrifying, to say the least. She had all of this, along with an F1 driver sliding in her DMs and inviting her to races - she had everything Cassie had ever wanted.

It was all so amazing, so good... But why did it feel so bad?

OKAY!! kydizzy with clinging!! the sweethearts deserve a bit of desperate contact methinks

Unfortunately I took 'desperate' and probably took it in the wrong direction. Uh, apologies if you wanted this to be fluffy, I guess it sort of is in a way, just not the usual. I'm digging up the pre-overture era stuff because that offers so much for protective Dizzy

Leo had come back with nothing to show for it but a heavily bleeding arm, prompting panic among the people who had been waiting for him.

“Y-your majesty?” One of the castle staff covered their mouth in horror. “Good lord, what happened?”

Daryl quickly intervened, trying to keep the peace. “Someone will escort you to the infirmary immediately in order to stop the bleeding.”

“Gah, of course, of course, Daryl, I’m not so thickheaded that I would just let this bleed.” Leo huffed back at him.

“...I take it that your discussion didn’t get very far?”

He hung his head. “She won’t listen. I tried to explain, but either she can’t understand like this, or she just doesn’t want to hear it.”

“Your majesties, will we be moving on to firepower as an option?”

”Absolutely not.” Daryl immediately shut the man down. “Barring any concern we may have for it also harming the First King, it is likely that it will only aggravate her further.”

Someone in the back muttered to themself. “This is what we get for having a Gear as a queen.”

“Pardon?” Said Leo, looking for the individual among the group. “Would someone like to say that louder for us?”

Daryl shook his head. “Leo, don’t. Focus on yourself right now. Ellsworth, escort King Leo so he may receive some kind of medical treatment before he passes out.”

“Yessir.”

“For now,” he turned back to the rest. “I will attempt diplomacy of my own accord. No disrespect to my colleague, but I feel I could offer a more careful form of negotiation. We all want the same thing, after all.”

Several of them looked hesitant, but nobody could bring themselves to contradict the remaining king. They only watched as he headed down the same hallway that Leo had returned from, breath held in the hopes that this time wouldn’t involve more bloodshed.

Daryl was always good at putting on a stoic front. That wasn’t to say he was frightened, but negotiations with Gears wasn’t something richly illustrated in the history of debate. This wasn’t quite a hostage situation, but it wasn’t much of a pleasant chat, either. He simply hoped it would be over fast.

The castle started to show its damage as soon as he rounded the corner. Nobody had been able to remove the door yet, so it remained firmly lodged in the wall opposite of where it should have been. The remaining doorframe jutted out like a splintery flower. It had all been pushed back by one strong blow, and the carpet was scorched, decorated with a hearty blood spatter.

However, Daryl never thought he would say it, but the horrible mess would have to go ignored for now. He did his best to give off the air of politeness and calm, and stepped into the doorway.

“Miss Dizzy?

In the darkness, a pair of scarlet lights snapped to face him. A shiver ran down his spine. He tried to stifle it.

“We have spoken before. I am Third Ki-”

A spike of ice soared past his head, missing by little more than an inch. While he winced, Daryl realized it had been intentional. A warning shot. Just speaking to her had been enough to get that response. This was worse than he had thought.

Ky was still passed out in her arms, shivering and pale. When he stopped to look, it was obvious now- the thinness, the shaking, the vigor vanishing from his body- of course, nobody had thought to care until Dizzy decided that they were going to, and very quickly. That was the funniest part of this whole thing, if he could dare to call any of it funny. Despite the half-mad bioweapon he was currently in the hands of, Ky wasn’t in any sort of danger whatsoever. She had made that very clear. Dizzy was protecting him from everyone else.

Daryl reminded himself of that. Dizzy wasn’t a monster to be subdued, he was supposed to be there to coax a truce.

“I’m sorry,” he ventured, careful but pleased to see her not immediately go on the offensive again. “We all are. Truly, so very sorry. We want to help him. We can’t give him the help he needs here. If you let us bring him to-”

He was cut off by a sharp, catlike hiss. “YOUR FAULT.” Her pupils narrowed further into slits. “IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT.

He nodded. “I know. We made a terrible mistake. I understand that now. You have helped us to understand. Please, let us do what is right now.”

“NOBODY ELSE WILL PROTECT HIM. I WILL. I MUST.” Her tail lashed at the air, showing off its razor teeth. What he had thought was a shadow at first was a dark stain on otherwise-immaculate white. Daryl knew it could extend, but he wasn’t sure by how much. He could never assume full safety here.

“I know.” He said again. “You just want what’s best for him. I admire that. I want to help him, too.”

Dizzy stared him down, teeth gritted. Now there were two separate sets bared in his direction. “NO. NO YOU DON’T. YOU NEVER DID.”

“Miss Dizzy-”

“DON’T LIE TO ME!” She roared, the walls shaking from the force. “LEAVE BEFORE I MAKE YOU!”

This was treading on very thin ice now. Daryl didn’t want to throw in the towel just yet. “You can’t even consider?”

“NOBODY ELSE WILL HELP HIM. LEAVE.”

Her long tail lashed out at him, forcing a retreat. He squeezed out into the relative safety of the hallway, looking himself over for wounds he may not have noticed. Dizzy hadn’t left a scratch.

A complete and utter failure. He hadn’t gotten anywhere with her. Maybe he hadn’t deserved to. For all her inelegant rambling, she hadn’t been especially wrong.

After waiting several minutes, Daryl hesitantly peered into the room. He expected Dizzy would attack him properly as soon as she saw his face again, but she didn’t even look up. Through the low light, he could see her carefully wrapping Ky up in a quilt, butting their foreheads together and clinging onto him tightly. If he strained his ears, he swore he could make out a soft, sniffling humming.

I ALSO WANT TO BOOP HIS SNOOT! <3 I picked some good ones for this ask methinks- 🚩 What makes your selfship ‘dark’? Is it the dynamic? The way they met? A specific element of the relationship?: My ship with Jin is dark because of the entirety of who he is- he's a eugenicist with a god complex who delights in hearing the screams of his subjects during tests or the process of Compleation, whereas my self-insert is a powerful Planeswalker- one that someone like Jin would literally KILL to turn into a pawn or soldier for his cause and couldn't fight back against him on their own. The tension, the dynamics, it all screams, "dark, forbidden romance", if you could call it that. 🦄 Why do you choose to have this relationship darker instead of fluffy? Do you feel that it could be fluffy if you wanted to write it that way?: It's darker because it HAS to be- there's literally no possible, plausible, proper way to write a fluffy relationship with someone like Jin-Gitaxias; it doesn't fit him in any way and wouldn't make any sense. It can have elements of something there that might break through that darkness, but at its core, it's not fluffy or sweet in the slightest. 💕 Do you think that your f/o and s/i love each other? Why or why not would you use that word?: My S/I (aka me) is pretty sure they're in love with him, and while Jin can't exactly process emotions and almost certainly cannot and/or will not admit love of any kind, he refuses to let anything bad happen to me and will not allow anyone to hurt me- so long as I remain by his side in the Surgical Bay. 🏥 Is one of you fixing the other or making the other worse?: Both, in a sense- he's converting me more into voluntarily assisting him in experiments and such in the bay to the point where I'm almost enjoying it, and I'm basically breaking through small bits of his rough outer shell (literally and figuratively) to where he can show some form of care for someone else in a semi-positive manner. ⛓️ Is your f/o protective or possessive? Why one over the other?: Jin is VERY MUCH borderline possessive-protective over me- mostly for good reason, as if Elesh Norn found out about his refusal to Compleat me and even hide me from her knowledge in my current state, she would definitely kill me, and possibly kill him as an act of treason. So because he knows that any hide or hair of me going outside of his layer of New Phyrexia would mean death, he almost is forced to confine me to the walls of the bay. I understand why he does it, and I don't feel trapped against my will, but being able to explore more of my safe haven would be nice...

what if albedo does manage to revive you but at the cost of his soul? the second when you awake, there is a heavy feeling present in your chest as it weighs you down. you breath, but it feels wrong.

the pain that struck your body, the forlornness you saw on his face that day as he held you. no, you're not supposed to be here.

you're not supposed to be breathing, you stopped a long time ago. so, why are you alive? the way your heart thumps inside your chest feels like a dream.

"you're awake."

you glance to meet those very same teal eyes you've stared into so many times before. albedo, you want to cry out and embrace him but you can't find the strength to lift your limbs.

he extends his hand to your cheek, "shhh, it's okay. welcome home, [Y/N]." a soft caress but his hand lacks warmth, it's strangely cold.

your intuitions scream at you; they begin to claw at you from the inside. something is off and you can't place your hands on it as you rack through your hazy mind. so many questions you want to ask, so many things you want to say — until the moment your gaze drifts down from his mesmerizing eyes to his neck.

the diamond marking.

it's not there.

'albedo' smiles, "what's wrong, hm?" oh-so innocently he does but you're not comforted by it, not one bit.

fear paralyzes you by storm but you manage to inch away from him. no, he is not your albedo.

growing weak has its disadvantages but to bring you, albedo is willing. yet, at the same time, one of those disadvantages includes a predator hiding in hindsight, waiting for the right moment to pounce. now that the oh-so perfect subject has let down his guard, it's time for the discarded one to shine now.

tldr: albedo has grown significantly weaker after reviving you and primodial albedo uses this exact situation to his advantage, overempowering the original and replacing the place he should've gotten.

hm, what happened to the original? that's only for him to know. after all, it's thanks to you and the original's blind devotion that he finally got to take his rightful place. ha, foolish lovers.

It has now been a week since prompts were released. Ideas already coming to you or do you need some help to get the ball rolling? Today, I will explain why I chose each prompt and how they could tie into a possible idea.

Mod Merry

Flowers: An easy pick for them both as they both have flower motifs. This prompt opens up plenty of easy low stakes scenarios like buying a bouquet for their anniversary, doing gardening together or higher stake ones too, like hanahaki or gardenverse. Its a very versatile prompt, I think.

Stars: An easy selection! Ryoken is the stardust boy after all. It can be taken in multiple directions, too. Not just star gazing but if you want to do metas on their astrological signs go for it or maybe an AU where they are movie stars, rock stars, any kind of star.

Manmade Technology: this prompt might prove a little tricky but the inspiration was found in Vrains' setting and of course the birth of the Ignis so mediations on either of them would be appropriate. Of course, if you wanted to get inappropriate, then things like sex toys are manmade technology, too. It was also chosen to evoke the Borrels/Rokkets so if you wanted to explore what if they had a personal connection to Ryoken akin to the Sunavalons, then you have my blessing.

Natural Wonder: Chosen to complement manmade technology and evoke the Sunavalons. I also inexplicably associate the song Seven Wonders by Fleetwood Mac with them so deal with it. Regardless, if you are in the mood to draw something with an epic background, this could be the prompt to excise that mood on.

Dragon: Evoked in honour of Ryoken given his deck. There's also dragon related tropes too for any tropers who want to make gifsets. This prompt is meant to run wild with canon mediations and fun AUs, good luck!

Ghost: Named in honour of Spectre. There's plenty of potential for fun visuals, interesting metaphors in this prompt, methinks. Can be either fluffy or angsty. Casper The Friendly Ghost AU? Sixth Sense AU? Buzzfeed Unsolved AU? Plenty of potential in this prompt

Following Behind: Ever notice that Spectre is (usually) portrayed behind Revolver/Ryoken in scenes they're together? I chose this prompt based on this visual.

Moving Forward: This prompt was inspired by the theme of the final episode, so its meant to open up possibilities on post-canon but of course, there are plenty of things either of them could move forward on or from.

Courage: Chosen to pair with cowardice, Ryoken exemplified courage as a child when he ended the Incident. I think this prompt opens up a lot of potential for angst, particularly on Ryoken's side, or could be taken in a different direction for Spectre if you wanted to complete or alter his character arc. In a completely different vein, its also a Digimon Crest so, Digimon AU anyone? I think a lot can be done with it.

Cowardice: Chosen first in this pair, I thought of Spectre's most negative trait haha and as such, it might be tricky to convey but another of the ample opportunities for angst if that is one's forte.

Dead Asleep: Inspired by all the comatose states that Spectre's been in over the course of Vrains.

Wide Awake: Chosen to complement dead asleep. Good luck. But there are definitely songs which include wide awake within their lyrics so that could open up potential for AMVs.

It was totally innocuous, the first time. You’d barely even shivered, really, before the Host was divesting himself of his coat. “Here, you can wear mine,” he had offered, wrapping it around your shoulders. It was well into spring, then, but the air had been determined, apparently, to stay chilly. You two hadn’t even interrupted your after-lunch walk around the grounds as he shucked the garment, as you easily slid your arms into the sleeves. It almost wasn’t worth mentioning, how it fit you. Comfortable, maybe a bit bigger than you would have thought, but definitely comfortable - like a well-thought over memory. You’d chuckled and thanked him, then continued on as if nothing had happened. Which it hadn’t.

Until it kept happening. Which definitively moved it from ‘innocuous’ to ‘a pattern,’ one you couldn’t un-notice once you’d seen it. Chilly? Here, you can wear mine. Tired? Here, you can wear mine - folded up like a pillow or draped over you in place of a blanket. Even if he didn’t directly offer it to you, especially as the months progressed and the weather warmed, you could somehow always find it conveniently draped nearby. Which also meant he was wearing it less overall, altering your mental image of the man from one robed in tan to the darker color of his dress shirts. It made the blonde streak in his hair, the dark, faded bloodstains of his bandages stand out more. His face stood out more, without the heavy lapels of his coat swallowing up his neck and shoulders all the time.

Now you could see how, unlike the others, his cheeks didn’t apple up so much when he smiled or laughed, careful of his empty eyes. How his jaw loosened even when he was doing the most intensive work around his garden - how describing his surroundings and the pull of his muscles and tasks before him soothed him like little else could. How he looked at you when you pulled the thick, cotton weight of his coat across your lap, around your shoulders. As if he had no expression at all, and never had - which was a tell all its own, belying the multitude of emotions that might have roiled under his surface.

Apart from that particular expression…

Cliché as it may be, it was as if the Host had peeled off some shell, letting you see better his expressions, his body language - himself.

Which was a quiet realization all its own, emerging as you found yourself reaching for the coat even when you weren’t sure why. It felt nice to have it close. Something to turn into and rest on on an otherwise hard garden chair. It was natural to have it nearby. Always available, always offered.

You were happy to wrap yourself in it.

“Here, you can wear mine.” You undo your scarf and, before the Host can protest, wrap it firmly around his neck. Folded so it knots over itself and cozily encircles his neck, you tuck the loose ends into the front of his tan coat. The Host’s mouth is flapping a bit like a fish on a dry dock, his complaints coming out half-formed. In the shadow of the evening, you can still make out how his expression has warmed.

“But. You’ll. You’ll get cold…”

“I’ve got a hood on this,” you dismiss, tugging your own jacket’s hood up and over your head, snuggling down into the fluffy garment. He doesn’t seem convinced, lips progressing from pointlessly opening and closing to pressing themselves together in a thin line. “Too late. You’re wearing it now. Come on, it’s freezing, but I want to get our walk in.”

The Host looks resignedly at the wooded path before you both. “Yes, yes, all right. Let us be quick, Dark will never forgive me if you catch your death.”

“Oh, please, it’s not like I’m some delicate Victorian,” you laugh as the two of you crunch through the dead leaves. “Besides… it’s nice, right?”

He takes a moment, tucking his chin. His face becomes mostly bandages and your scarf for a moment as he snuggles in. His velvet voice carries a bit of sheepishness when he finally admits, “… yes. It’s very warm.”

Even as the air nips your cheeks and chaps them slightly, you can’t help how they stay split in such a wide grin.

Backtrack Post!

What happened in 2020? Whatever it was, it ignited a spark in me and spurned me to new levels regarding my writing output! This is a backtrack post to have one last look backwards at what I managed to generate in 2020, before we successfully move with big steps towards 2021! :D Enjoy~

Now, without further ado, a bit of a review of the year in terms of my fanfiction writing! :D As per usual, you’ll find it under the cut, folks interested in the statistical side of things! I’ll also include a bit of a cautious prediction as to what 2021 will hold in store for you, dear readers, so, for those of you curious enough to go on: have fun reading! Cheers!

I gotta say, in 2020 I’ve been productive with my fanfiction-writing like I haven’t been in all of the five years before!

My obsession with the One Piece fandom has successfully stuck with me, it’s in its second year and going strong, still! :D On top of that, I’ve lately started branching out due to various Challenges and Gift Exchanges to involve other fandoms in my writing.

In total

In 2020, I transferred all of my fanfics from ffnet over to AO3 (and tried to do vice-versa for some, although that’s tapered off quickly when I saw how much more effort that was... XD I’ll finish transferring Celebramus Vitam sometime in 2021, but that’s all that ffnet will see of me any longer, methinks...), getting my whole word count logged on AO3 for all of my years up to 404.461 words. WOHOOOO!!!

All in all, I’ve written and put online 223.371 words for all of my different fandoms in 2020 alone (I subtracted the # of words for my transferred fics there, but added the ones that dragged over from 2019 - see my reasoning for that below, those were: A Gamble in Time and An Older Brother’s Plight). Predominantly, I’ve spent my time in One Piece fanfic-land, with Yuuri! On Ice following close behind. In third place, there’s both Magic Kaito and Asterix in a tie, having each gotten one more fanfic published for their fandoms.

2020 was the year that I created a few Series to better organise my fanfics and had fun participating in Challenges. I remodeled both my Series as well as my Tumblr a few times and restructured the plot of a few of my stories as I went along. Things changed, happenings had to be changed to accomodate different outcomes and new characters made themselves known.

First and foremost, my obsession with Portgas D Ace’s character has opened the way for me to explore more characters in the OP universe: Sabo’s now a close second favourite character of mine, with Buggy as well as Shanks sharing the third place in my personal rankings. Funnily enough, Buggy has quite literally bowled me over with his charm and charisma, thank you very much @stereden, for nudging me into that one’s direction. XD

My participation in the Women! Wanted Zine (which shall be out in 2021 and which I am super looking forward to physically holding in my hands soon~ thank you @womenwantedzine for keeping the anticipation alive!!!) made me aware of how little the female characters of OP are being talked about and thus, a Shiny New Series for them was born that I try to keep adding to every now and again.

I have also taken part in Nanowrimo 2020, and, while doing that, managed to break a personal record and arrive at writing 1k+ words in 15 minutes, whenever the mood hit! That was awesome to see spelled out by the sprint bot, seriously.

Yuuri! On Ice

I wrote three fanfics for this particular fandom that I’m quite proud of, especially seeing as I wrote one within two week’s time for the Heart Attack Exchange: it’s called Theirs is a magical kind of love and it’s got 10k+ to its name. This one’s just as fluffy as the one whose name I still to this day can’t pronounce correctly (forgive me, Russian-speaking folks!): от надежды родится вечность. (copy and paste are heavenly tools sometimes XD)

Tallying the word count of all three fics I wrote up, I arrive at 36.600 words having been written for this particular fandom and I gotta say, I’m quite proud of those.

Also: don’t worry, folks, I’ll keep coming back to “IT support, how can I help?” sometime this year - it won’t be finished this year I don’t think, but it’ll be continued, for sure. ;) As of this post, it’s got 22.681 words and I have grown quite fond of the thing, all in all.

One Piece

If we count both A Gamble in Time (12734 words thus far, with chapter four in the workings already) and An Older Brother’s Plight (15333 words) to the mix (they did start being written in December of 2019), then we’re at 175.051 words written in the One Piece fandom in 2020 alone.

My most prolific writing phase of 2020 has involved my longest fanfic, Through Troubled Waters. With its 77k+ words, it is at the same time my longest one. Having that one stay a 51-chapter-fanfic is still my most ambitious project, although if things keep going as they are, I don’t see why I won’t manage that. (#famous last words)

Altogether, I wrote 44 fanfics for the One Piece fandom in 2020 alone, most of them 100-word-drabbles that nevertheless were awesome to write.

I wrote a couple of longfics and a few oneshots-that-didn’t-stay-oneshots. XD

My most popular fanfics of 2020 in this particular fandom were also the ones I kept alternating between and working on the most: An Older Brother’s Plight is at the top and already finished with 15.333 words to its name. In second place, we find Through Troubled Waters (77.048 words at the time of this post). Third place occupies Dead Man Walking with 24.034 words to its name at the time this post was written and published and fourth place goes to A Gamble in Time (12.734 words).

Most of all, I had fun, engaging with the fandom, with like-minded people, throwing lots of plotbunnies around and prompting as well as enabling people to keep creating the most amazing pieces! Seriously, the people you get to know sometimes... couldn’t have written half of all of those fanfics without you - you know who you are!!! ;)

Predictions for 2021

Currently, I am very much immersed in writing for and finishing all the still-missing chapters for Dead Man Walking, which shall be done and over with by the end of January 2021, at the latest, I hope *knocks on wood*. Once that is done, I’ll be free to look at other things again and focus on the rest of my stories, once more. Moreover, I shall polish up the whole story of Dead Man Walking and edit it to include the missing bits (there is at least one for Chapter 11 that I will not spoil for those of you patiently waiting for it!).

For anything else, I will not be making any clear-cut or detailed predictions as to when I’ll update what, I’m afraid. 😅 I’ve learned my lesson with that one...

What I can already tell you about is the following: two side-stories/spin-offs to Through Troubled Waters are already in the workings and have been since November 2020. Together, once they are finished, they’ll have about 60k words to them. Potentially, (make that very potentially. Maybe. Hopefully,) they shall start to be posted in April, seeing as then would also be the first anniversary of the main story’s fic... although they do depend on particular chapters having been published before, so, who knows? 😅

On top of all of that, I’m still working my job, I’ll be finishing as well as pursuing another degree starting in January and living my life (and keep doing other hobbies I have along with keeping up my social contacts and having fun) while the pandemic is going on. Sooooo. Not a lot of free time at all, eh? Fanfiction writing is atm my go-to for relax time and I’m hopeful it’ll stay that way in 2021.

Considering I’m doing all of this writing for free? Publishing more than 223k in a year’s time while doing all that other stuff besides? That’s a whole lot of awesome output, I’m going to pat myself on the shoulder for managing all of that while a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic is still ongoing. *pat*

So, for those of you wondering when I’ll update the next chapter to any of my fics: it’s reasonable to assume I’m either writing or taking a well-deserved break at the moment. ;) I shall keep writing fanfics, though, no worries there.

Its funny i felt somethings going on with Richie Rich and Catflap and i'm like awww cute but I felt something happened with Richie and Filthy and I'm all ewwww gross. Ratflap is oddly sweet but Richie and Filthy would make for a very uncomfortable darkfic. I felt some hostility between Catflap and Ralph which I reckon is because deep down Catflap is protective of his Richie boy and doesnt like this sleazebag calling him darling so much.

When I was once doing an ask game about characters, which involved questions like OTPs and NOTPs, when I was given Richie Rich I put Richie X Ralph down for the NOTP. If someone does ship them, that's fine! And, like you said, I could definitely see it working as a darkfic... I just don't think it's something I'd ship myself, because usually I ship stuff I think would be cute. I think I only really ship darker stuff if the relationship feels balanced and the two just happen to be immoral. 😂 But that's just me.

Ralph is one of the dodgiest characters of this bunch (only topped by the likes of Alan B'Stard), and he's already shown to be taking advantage of Richie professionally. So yeah, would definitely be a darker relationship methinks. I would be interested to read a darkfic actually (just like I'd be interested to read a darker fic about CoolPoet/Mike X Rick, as I think it's a chance to explore the characters learning and growing as a result of the relationship), but I'd never pair the two of them up for fluffy stuff. I very much think Richie and Eddie are the duo of FR&C. Ratflap ftw!

Ship Ranker

I'm ranking my fleet of ships! The list will span fandoms, so bear with me and wave from the piers (or jump aboard 😏) while I organize my fangirl ravings into some semblance of order. Ranked from greatest to least, with honorable mentions.

Note: I use the words "pairing" and "ship" to differentiate two things. A "pairing" is a couple of characters with some canonical relationship (could be anything). A "ship" is a romantically or sexually involved couple that does not have to be canon.

The Fleet

Galleons (OTPs)

Yes, I know there's technically only supposed to be one ship that's your One True Pairing, but I've got several and choosing between them is like choosing my favorite child. (My list, my rules.)

1. Tendershipping or Stockholmshipping (Bakura Ryou/Yami Bakura, Yu-Gi-Oh)

This ship is divine. It really has it all -- gothic themes, horror elements, toxicity with the capacity for romance -- and has captivated me for as long as I've been a Yu-Gi-Oh fan. It's probably what influenced some of my more interesting predilections (coughcough number 13 cough).

2. USUK, Special Relationship, or Joker (America/Britain, Hetalia)

I mean, it's basically canon.

But pissing off antis aside, it's great seeing this relationship develop and witnessing them being really intimate (meaning knowing each other well, not the other thing) in the show/comics, so how could I not? Plus, as an American I'm all too familiar with the Special Relationship.

3. Spamano or SpeRo (Spain/Romano, Hetalia)

Ditto, number 2. Except this one might actually be canon. Seriously, I'm preeeeetty sure Himaruya & Co. have long since discovered the fandom's love for this ship and have peppered it as slight fanservice. (Exhibit A: the April Fool's Day OVA.) My favorite refrain when it comes to this ship is, "Could you really see them with anyone else?"

Battleships (Top Ships)

Ships I'll fight for.

4. Bronzeshipping (Marik Ishtar/"Yami" Marik, Yu-Gi-Oh)

This ship haunts me. It's dark and lovely and the pairing deserved way more attention in the show. My love for this ship stems from the observation that Yami Marik was created expressly to comfort and protect his lighter half, and despite wanting to excise him later, he still tries to carry out Marik's plan (i.e. kill the Pharaoh) despite no longer having to. Methinks there's some subconscious need drawing them together, and I stan.

5. AmeriPan (America/Japan, Hetalia)

I've recently fallen for this one. It's fun to write, even more fun to read, because of the sliding spectrum from angsty to fluffy. It started with the series pairing them off to demonstrate their friendship, then a realization that they're the paragon of "opposites attract." A large part of my love comes from @heta too, so kudos.

6. Yoreki (Yogi/Gareki, Karneval)

C'mon, just look at them. They're in love, your honor.

On a serious note, the manga goes out of its way to demonstrate the growing bond between these boys to the point of having significant consequences for the plot (in other words, their friendship fucks and then unfucks a lot of stuff). Do I think Tōya will actually ship them? No, but I can dream.

7. Starshipping (Yuki Jaden or Judai/Fudo Yusei, Yu-Gi-Oh)

Speaking of dreaming, I don't even know if this ship is allowed because these characters have never canonically met. Still, within the context of Bonds Beyond Time alone, they make the perfect pair. I'd have watched the entire movie with just the two of them, or better yet, a buddy-cop, scifi, action-adventure, card-game-playing movie where they have to save the world before prom.

On a serious note, their personalities balance each other out perfectly, and as @entamewitchlulu expertly demonstrated in "Hourglass of Stars," they can even exorcise each other's demons.

8. Stein/Spirit (Soul Eater)

No one can convince me that these two didn't have some intimate relationship beyond friendship. At the very least, Stein is attached to Spirit, so much so that he anchors Stein in his bouts of Madness. Plus, they snap back into partnership far too easily for two people who spent any amount of time apart not thinking about each other. All of that with a potential for toxic romance? Sign me the fuck up.

And I can't pretend tastewithouttalent didn't utterly convince me of their own canon.

9. Klance/Leith (Keith/Lance, Voltron: Legendary Defender)

They're in love, your honor.

Once again, a series goes out of its way to explore an intimate relationship between two, like, really compatible characters. So how could I not? (Also Leith is a way better ship name.)

10. Drarry (Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter, Harry Potter)

Because I'm basic and love a good rivals/enemies to lovers trope. Plus the fanfic has matured and refined over the years.

Cruise Liners (Fun Ships)

Ships that I ride for the hell of it.

11. Tokitatsu/Tsukitachi/Hirato/Akari (Karneval)

This is just pure joy. I love the idea of the two of the people Hirato finds most annoying hooking up and dragging him into it. Same goes for Akari. Plus, this foursome is made up of two quality pairings (Tsukitachi/Hirato and Akari/Tokitatsu) as well as fan favorite ship Hirato/Akari. So fun for the whole family.

12. Drinnarry (Draco Malfoy/Ginny Potter/Harry Potter, Harry Potter)

Speaking of poly ships, this new love of mine is inspired by Cursed Child. Because did you really think Ginny was going to let Draco be lonely? Plus, Drarry is always fun.

P. S. I'm very proud of that ship name I just created.

13. Genkaku/Nagi (Deadman Wonderland)

Flashback to when I said I loved toxic ships:

It really has it all -- gothic themes, horror elements, toxicity with the capacity for romance [...]

This one is pretty bad, and I know it, and I adore it. The penchant for violent, possessive "love" in literature and fandom resonates with a deep part of my soul, and Genkaku's obsession with Nagi fits perfectly, like a fishook in an eye.

14. Jay/Dick (Jason Todd/Dick Grayson, Batman)

This was the ship that made me break my incest rule (Incest Rule: Don't Ship It). Technically they're adopted so it isn't incestuous, but it still feels too close. Still, Jason and Dick are, like, really good foils of each other (intentionally so, DC didn't want a second Robin who was just like the first), which leads to fantastic angst, resentment, violence, and humor. Throw some sexual tension on top and you're ready to set sail.

Tugboats (Necessary Ships)

Ships I need to survive but don't think about often.

15. Destiel (Dean Winchester/Castiel, Supernatural)

Canon? Either way, this pairing has a famously tortuous build up, and I fell for it. My love for it peaked in Season 7, when Dean throws the Connect Four game off the table because he has Had It and wants Cas back to normal. The look on Castiel's face 😩

16. Marie/Azusa (Soul Eater)

Azusa clearly has a thing for Marie, and you can't tell me otherwise. Besides, my Stein/Spirit ship works out a thousand times better if this ship sails.

17. Dick/Kory (Dick Grayson/Kory'andr, Teen Titans)

Ironically, I hated this pairing way back when (even as a Teen Titans cartoon fan) because I wanted Dick and Barbara to get back together. However, DC's live action show Titans showed me the error of my ways. Of course, now I'm stuck hoping they get (back) together in season 3.

18. Scorbus (Scorpius Malfoy/Albus Potter, The Cursed Child)

I saw Cursed Child and just, like, adopted this one. It's kinda like Spamano -- probably not intended by the creator but makes waaaay too much sense to unsee.

19. Cyclops/Rogue (Scott Summers/Rogue, X-Men Evolution)

Old but gold. Probably one of my first ships, and appropriately for one of my favorite shows growing up. (X-Men Ev is easily the best X-Men series, don't @ me.) That field trip episode did it for me, as we see them finally open up to and trust each other. It's also fun to think about Scott chasing good girl Jean while infatuated with bad girl Rogue. We love irony.

20. Nightcrawler/Scarlet Witch (Kurt Wagner/Wanda Maximoff, Wolverine and the X-Men)

This was an okay series with really interesting premises and adaptations, not least of which was Magneto's Genosha, a mutant-only island nation. Kurt and Wanda just hit it off in their episode and I wondered if they could have depended on each other during that rough time. Lo and behold, I found out much later that they have a child in an alternate timeline in the comics, so maybe this ship holds more than ballast.

21. KagSan (Kagome/Sango, InuYasha)

I got it in my head one day and now it won't leave. I don't prefer it to the canon ships, but it's nice to fantasize about.

22. Sookie Stackhouse/Eric Northman (True Blood)

Eric was my favorite vampire (closely followed by Pam), and his fascination in Sookie pressed all the right buttons. Imagine my delight when they finally hooked up, and then my dismay when Sookie subsequently swears off vampires.

23. Violetshipping, formerly known as Puppyshipping (Seto Kaiba/Joey Wheeler)

I hate that I love this ship so much, so bottom of the list it goes. Still, it was the first one for which I wrote fanfic, and this pairing is canonically significant to the themes of the series. And what lit critic can resist that pull?

Ships I admire but don't actively write or read. These are not ranked.

Kim Possible/Shego (Kim Possible)

In other words, When I Should Have Known I Was Bi.

Daryl/Carol (The Walking Dead)

Spawned from their bonding during and after the search for Carol's daughter. They've been close ever since (at least through season 7, which is where I stopped watching).

Amexico (America/Mexico, Hetalia)

Yes, I made up this ship name, too. First off, Mexico deserves to be a country in the show (although they were named in an episode, and I suppose that's progress). Second, this one is weird because it involves my headcanon for Mexico: a passionate woman who won't back down from a challenge and has a love/hate relationship with America. They bicker and pretend to hate each other but need one another for commerce and are sometimes very similar.

Accelerator/Misaka, (A Certain Scientific Railgun/Magical Index)

Call me System of a Down, I love toxicity. This pairing in general has the potential for a good complex relationship that helps them both mature. And should I sprinkle some possessive romance in there on Accelerator's behalf, I'm sure you'll forgive me.

Arc Three: Chapter Eight

(AO3 counterpart here.)

Mistface was grateful when the sky started to turn orange in the north. There were more clouds on the horizon, but in this brief holiday from wet weather, his fur had dried and the implication of sunlight arriving already warmed him up considerably.

Nothing had come their way so far, save a doe and her fawn, who peered curiously at the fluffy grey creature before stumbling through the mud and grass after his mother. The Runagate had vanished hours ago, leaving Mistface alone to gaze out at the valley and ponder if the deer were just as much victims of StarClan as the cats were.

At last, though, someone did shift in the grass. Mistface didn’t look at them, though his ear did turn towards the sound. He watched the stars fade out, one by one, until the cat started sniffing and walked up to his side.

“Nothing after us, I hope?” said Darkpelt.

Mistface made an ambiguously toned noise. “Leaders must’ve made it to the Clast by now. But they ain’t here yet, no.”

“Anyone else?” He didn’t have to look to know Darkpelt was giving him a very pointed, yet friendly stare. “Because I thought I heard talking before I fell asleep. You haven’t sold us out, have you?”

Mistface didn’t bite. He merely lowered his gaze a little. “Runagate visited.”

“Get outta here.” A grin in Darkpelt’s voice.

“Serious.” Mistface glanced at her – yes, she was grinning, and her eyes were even wider than usual. “Fella’s real tired. Hopeful, though, that somethin’ can be done about… all this.” He contemplated the sky again. “I still don’t know what to think, but that one showin’ up and talkin’ to me one-on-one leans me towards ‘Greyleaf isn’t insane’. Thank the st- the Aspects.”

“He never was.” Darkpelt sat down beside him. “Neither was Redheart. Like I said, this is too insane to be real and yet too sensible to just be made up on the spot. If the Runagate talked to you, then I’m willing to believe it all.”

Mistface hummed. There was silence for a moment, before Darkpelt spoke again.

“Well, my lad, what do you plan to do now?” Her grin faded into a thinner smile. “You going to run and tattle to the leaders? Flee the Territory?”

As usual, the answer was obvious. Mistface smiled a little thinly himself. “Wherever my brother goes, I’m goin’. If he wants to do somethin’ about that monster, I’ll be happy to help.”

“Good.” Darkpelt fully beamed. “That’s the right answer. I’m sticking around, too.”

Mistface gave her a sidelong look, slightly amused. “The leaders’ll be right ticked with you.”

“That’s their problem.” Darkpelt stood up and stretched. “Now, what’s the time?”

“Right about dawn. Little earlier. Sun ain’t out yet.”

“That’s enough time for you to get some sleep yourself, methinks.” Darkpelt winked. “Don’t worry, I’ll take watch, and I’m very good at it.”

Mistface opened his mouth to make the immediate obvious response about her sight, but it occurred to him an instant later that she wasn’t going to have any trouble hearing something coming. He simply got up with a muttered “thanks”, walked to where his brother was curled up, and laid down beside him.

He could barely get a good look at Darkpelt sitting back down with her tail curling before his eyes shut on their own and he felt himself slip away into sleep. He, thankfully, dreamed of nothing.

He woke up last of everyone else in the morning to silence. No one spoke to each other. Prey was caught (and none of them had white marks) and eaten without a single comment from anyone. Mistface observed that they weren’t even looking at each other – everyone’s eyes were on the ground or on their prey, chewing slowly with a nauseous expression.

Alright, he thought. Up to me.

“So,” he said, and all eyes jerked to him. “Runagate stopped by.”

Greyleaf stared. “You saw them?”

“Talked with ‘em, actually.” Mistface internally smiled at the shock on everyone’s faces. He recounted the conversation in its entirety to a stunned audience, concluding with, “So I don’t know what y’all plan to do, but I’m thinkin’ I should help you two-“ he turned to Greyleaf and Redheart “-with whatever action you decide on.”

Redheart blinked and nodded gratefully at him. Greyleaf gave him a genuine, if exhausted, smile.

Flyfang looked somewhere towards the south. “I was thinking of grabbing my sisters early and running as far as we can go, honestly. But…” She looked around the group. “I’m sure I’m not alone on that.”

“I’d love to get all of Hillock out of the Territory,” Littlepaw said quietly. “I don’t think they’d believe me, but I have to try, at least.”

“It would be nice to get everyone out,” Laurelclaw said, anxiously shuffling, “but I was thinking about it earlier – even if we got the entire Clan away from here, what if it follows us? What if it can move along with the Clan?”

Redheart sighed. “The plan was to scatter the Clan’s members in all directions so that, in case it is able to follow, it has so little food in one area that it’d get hungry and move on somewhere else. Then we would ideally get to return here.”

“Oh…” Littlepaw’s eyes were wide with distress. “I don’t know that I’d like to just…send it off to go eat other beings.”

“I don’t think there’s anything else we can do, really,” Flyfang replied, sounding like she was trying to be gentle but coming off as exhausted and frustrated. “That’s probably our only option to save everyone else here.”

Darkpelt’s ears twitched and her eyes narrowed a little. “Let me get back to you on that, Flyfang.”

Flyfang looked at her, more frustrated now than exhausted. “What, do you have something?”

“Not yet,” Darkpelt said lightly. “But when we don’t know everything, there’s usually a solution we can’t see.”

“That’s bold, Darkpelt,” Redheart said. She sounded like she meant it.

Darkpelt smiled and waved her tail. “As for me, I’ll be joining you and the Brothers Grey. I think I can do a lot more if I’m with you all.”

“Who knows for how long, though,” Greyleaf said. “The leaders are probably on our trail as we speak. If we’re going to do something, we should do it now.”

“Let them catch up to us, perhaps,” Beetlefoot growled suddenly.

Everyone looked at him, surprised. He lifted his head and glared at Redheart.

“You’re still wanted by our authorities,” he said. “We already risked ourselves being arrested by following you. If anything, we should keep you here until they arrive.”

“But we’re not going to do that, are we?” Darkpelt tilted her head, blindly staring right at him.

“Probably not, but we should,” Beetlefoot grumbled. “After everything she caused-“

“It is not her fault some idiot got careless, Beetlefoot,” Greyleaf snapped, bristling. “She didn’t tell him to kill Striderfoot, and it was entirely on accident!”

Redheart’s tail touched Greyleaf’s side, and he fell silent. To Beetlefoot, she said softly, “I hate that she died, Beetlefoot, believe me. Knowing everything I know – everything you all now know – it destroys me when anyone is killed, or gets sick, or ages away. If I could, I’d bring her back. But I can’t. No one can. All I can do now is try to rectify that death by saving everyone else.”

Beetlefoot met her eyes defiantly for a long moment. Then he looked away with a scowl.

“Much as you talk as you do, you won’t be following through on getting her in custody,” Darkpelt said. “Because of two things. One, you know at least a couple of us aren’t going to let you just walk away and tattle. Two, you’re just as keen to solve this problem as we are.” Her smile broadened. “Aren’t you?”

Beetlefoot said nothing, but when he lifted his head Mistface immediately caught the terror he was desperately trying to hide behind his surliness. He opened his mouth, trying to form words, before giving up with a sigh.

“Thought so.” Darkpelt gave a self-satisfactory nod and turned her head this way and that. “Now, what about the rest of you? Will you be staying on?”

“I will,” Littlepaw said immediately.

Flyfang looked at her with an aggrieved sort of affection. “And I’m still staying with her, so I guess count me in.”

“It’s the right thing to do, I think,” Laurelclaw said. “Eight heads are better than four. Or-“ he looked to Beetlefoot “-is it seven?”

Beetlefoot shut his eyes and took a breath. When he opened them again, he was much calmer. “It’s eight. At least until we have a good solution.”

“Atta boy,” said Darkpelt. Laurelclaw smiled at Beetlefoot and Redheart looked relieved.

“Then we best get movin’,” Mistface said, standing up. “Already wasted enough time sittin’ around talkin’.”

“Where do we go, though?” Littlepaw tilted her head. “I don’t know any part of this area myself, and we might run into strangers.”

Greyleaf’s eyes squinted just a bit as he thought. He swiftly perked up and stood up too. “If you all don’t mind mist and mud, I’ve got an idea.”
