Today is an unusual sight for the usually hectic police department in Raccoon City. The office is adorned with balloons, garlands, and laughter, celebrating not just the promotion of a well-loved officer, Leon S. Kennedy, but also his farewell as he relocates to a new precinct.
You should be happy for your boyfriend – and you are – but part of you will miss watching over his figure from your desk, casting flirtatious grins back and forth in attempts to distract each other from the rigorous paperwork.
A banner suspends between the light fixtures, observing the lopsided words ‘CONGRATULATIONS’, strings twisted into the knot. The culprit of this handiwork, Chris, puffs out his chest proudly, while Rebecca looks at him in disbelief.
“Chris, leave the decorations to Rebecca, please.” You break apart the squabble forming between them. Rebecca smirks as Chris descends the ladder, defeated. “Don’t forget everyone, this is supposed to be a surprise.”
“Claire, where is the card?” You interrogate the next person in your line of sight, who happens to be Claire. All whilst you signal Rebecca to tilt the banner slightly upwards. “Has everyone signed?”
“Yep. It’s just you left.” She hands over the card, before resuming to the case files on her computer.
The card scrawls with heartfelt blessings from your team, a lot of ‘good lucks’, ‘we’ll miss you’, and nostalgia when he was just a rookie. He worked hard for ten years to be a sergeant, and you know he deserves this.
You pick up your pen – contemplating the words to express how amazing he is, how you will love him forever, how you will miss the sneaky make-out sessions in the work janitor’s closet.
…Marvin will be so proud of you. Yours, ....
The vibration in your pocket cuts you off mid-sentence – Jill. She is supposed to be on the case with Leon for another thirty minutes. You read the text out loud.
“I can't hold him back much longer, we're on our way. ETA in five minutes!!”
The floor scrambles in panic to finalise their positions. Rebecca quickly secures the banner with some tape. Claire is passing party poppers. Chris is putting away the ladder to the storeroom.
As Jill enters the space with Leon following behind, all the confetti releases at once.
The rainbow plastic ribbons catching in his hair like stardust in sand. You catch a glimpse of surprise in his reaction, following with a light on the corner of his lips.
Tumblr media
“To Leon!” your team lifts their glasses high in the air, sipping beers and cocktails all night. Leon is the star tonight – you can barely talk to him without two other people buying him drinks all night along.
You catch him a whole two hours later in the circle booth, after some of the crowd has dispersed, his cheeks redden from the many drinks consumed all in a few hours. You squeeze yourself through three different people to sit yourself next to Leon.
“Having fun?” You try to get his attention by nudging at his forearm. “Don’t get too drunk though, I have to take you home.”
Leon lifts his gaze, when he sees you right by him, a grin tug at his face almost immediately. His cerulean eyes somehow more glazy than usual.
“Thank you for doing all of this. You are so good for me.” Despite the scent of beer merging with his breath, the grin on his face remains childlike. One that you only see in his drunkenness, which he lets down his guard to show more of his emotional side.
“Everyone helped. Not just me.” You are thinking how cute Leon looks when he’s drunk. “You are well-loved in here. I’m just the facilitator.”
“How about you work for me?” Leon brings the back of your palm to his lips. “I can pull some strings, now that I’m sergeant.”
“Sergeant Kennedy, using your influence for personal goals? It’s not even your first day.” You quip with a slight chuckle.
“And what if I am?” He peppers kisses from your palm to your fingers, the faint heat from his lips sizzle through your nerves. “Sure you’ll enjoy less time on the field, and more time in my office.”
“Well, if that’s the case.” You decide to let this banter go on a little further. “I expect to be well-compensated for my extra duties.”
“That will depend on your performance.” He raises a sassy eyebrow, pulling you closer until your noses touch.
“Good thing I always hit my KPI’s.”
“I do like a hardworking employee…”
Eyes fluttering shut slowly, you smile into the kiss. His lips lay gently on yours, sucking slightly at your cupid’s bow. Your bodies move closer, so close that you rests your hand on Leon’s thigh for support. The kiss deepens further, sloppier, tongues intertwined until…
“Ahem.” Chris clears his throat loudly, snapping you back to the present.
You open your eyes to find the whole table staring at the two of you. Your gaze finds its way to Jill, which she immediately, most awkwardly, rolls her eyes to the ceiling as if there is something to see there. Claire is nonchalant, sipping her beer and simply enjoying the scene.
You retract the tongue that is still shoved in Leon’s mouth. A hint of pink is running up your cheeks, you don’t need to see it to feel it. Leon, however, is unphased by the attention from his coworkers. Perhaps it’s the alcohol, perhaps it’s knowing that he won’t be seeing these guys next Monday.
“So… next rounds on me. Who’s in?” Chris attempts to diffuse the awkwardness, which earns a few curt nods from the table.
Leon holds you by the hand, picking you up from the seat. “Sorry Chris, we’re gonna call it. It’s been a long night. Thanks for the party, everyone.”
You two shuffle past Chris and Jill out of the booth, after a round of hugs with everyone, you can practically feel Leon sprinting out the bar.
“How ‘bout we continue where we left off at my place?”
Your cheeks turn a deeper red. It seems like he will be the one to take you home tonight instead.

Joey B Blurbs: Drive My Car
Tumblr media
————————————————————————-
Summary: You still haven't learned your lesson… and are back with a Joe prank! Now it's calling your poor husband to tell him about your discovery of “Christmas gas”.
Warnings: Fluff, slight illusion to smut
Pairing: Joe Burrow x reader
Imagine universe: Into The Mystic
————————————————————————-
December 12th, 2023
I still don't know how Joe isn't tired of me and my tricks yet. After all of the pranks I've pulled on him I just keep finding more.
Bored in bed since Joe was gone, I found a prank I could do on him over the phone and immediately got down to business.
He was at his parent's house helping his mom build a new dresser like the amazing son he is while I stayed at home with Tyson and Miles. They weren't awake yet so I could put Joe on speaker while recording with his iPad.
After making my hair look decent I pulled Joe’s contact up and called him.
In usual amazing husband fashion, he answered in less than two rings.
“Hey Joey.” - you
“Hey, Mama. What's up? Do I need to step outside for this.” - Joe
Even though I loved Robin with my whole heart, I really didn't want her to think I was a ditz who thought diesel was “Christmas gas”.
“Uhm, yes.” - you
“Okay gimme a sec.” - Joe
A few moments later you could hear the back sliding door shut and Joe told you to keep going.
“Okay so the other day I saw this TikTok about this thing called Christmas gas and I wanted to try it. So I did. Now my car barely even got home and it was making a weird sound.” - you
“Baby… what? What the fuck is Christmas gas and where did you get it?” - Joe
“The gas station we always go to! It's just gas that's supposed to smell like pine wood for the holidays.” - you
I had to mute myself because I was dying laughing. Joe sighed and groaned out of pure annoyance before clearing his throat to speak.
“You actually put it in your car?” - Joe
“Mhm. Should I have not of?” - you
“I don't know, y/n! I've never heard of damn Santa gas or whatever the hell!” - Joe
“Christmas gas! It’s a limited edition!” - you
“Limited edition… baby why would they have limited edition gas?” - Joe
“I don't know. It was like three more dollars a gallon though and didn't even smell like pine wood.” - you
“Oh my god. y/n, was it coming from the green nozzle?” - Joe
“Yes! You have heard of it!” - you
“y/n, that's diesel babe! Did you put diesel in your car?” - Joe
“No, I put the Christmas gas in.” - you
“The green nozzle is diesel, y/n. That's why it was 3 more dollars than the regular gas, and why your car isn't working, because you put diesel in your gas car!” - Joe
“Are you sure? The gas station was decorated for Christmas and the green pump even had lights on it.” - you
“Yes, I'm sure! I'm gonna have to call the mechanic and take your car in when I get home later. Hopefully, your engine isn't ruined.” - Joe
“Is my car going to be ruined, Joey?” - you
“I don't know baby. You have to stop doing those stupid TikTok trends, y/n.” - Joe
“I’m sorry Joe. If my car’s ruined don't feel like you have to get it fixed.” - you
“That's BS. Imma get your damn car fixed. Just promise you won't do stuff like that till you run it by me because it might be a scam.” - Joe
“Okay, baby. I love you.” - you
“I love you too, just don't use your car till I get home. If you need to go somewhere before I do just take one of mine.” - Joe
“Thank you, just one more thing to tell you before you go.” - you
“Please tell me you didn't get your oil changed with reindeer piss.” - Joe
I busted out laughing and Joe giggled along with me, proud of how he was quick enough to make a funny joke.
“No! But… this was a prank.” - you
“Oh my god y/n! So your car is fine?” - Joe
“Yes. I haven't even left the house… or even the bed yet today.” - you
“Shit babe, you had me worried for a minute. Well, I'm gonna go. I love you.” - Joe
“I love you too! Kinda sad I won't get to see you play sexy mechanic though.” - you
“Pregnancy hormones?” - Joe chuckled
“They’re through the roof.” - you giggled
“I’ll help when I get home.” - Joe
I could practically hear his smirk in his lust-laced promise.
“Bye, Joey.” - you
“Bye, Mama. Don’t be buyin’ any gasoline from elves ya hear?” - Joe
“Yes, sir.” - you laughed and Joe hung up
That gorgeous man is a saint for putting up with me.

but seriously, i can't believe how far i've gone. and how i should be really proud of myself.
11 years of never-ending pain, of learning how to ignore and endure it, how to look and act "normal".
then my first shitty canes (they're pretty but completely unusable). first steps. first shame. how i was afraid to show up at work with it.
after that, i ordered a custom cane. and then another one. i decorated them. made them vibing. i started taking it to work, still afraid to use it around my colleagues.
then i got three house canes (first and second ones got chewed by my beloved dog lol) and started using it at home as well.
and now i use it everywhere i go. when i walk my dog, when i go to my lunch break on work, when i get around my apartment.
i got forearm crutches and learned how to use them. i decorated them too! they're yellow, covered in flowers stickers.
today i started saving up for my future rollator. i believe i'll be able to actually order it by june.
it all happened too fast, i still have impostor syndrome, i still feel self-conscious, like i'm not actually disabled and don't belong to cpunk communtiy and i'm a faker etc etc etc... but one thing happened: i improved my life. (even if i'm a faker lol) i got less pain every day, less fatigue, i stopped being ashamed at least of my canes.
my best friend was a big part of this journey, without her support i'd never get here. love her so much.

Classic Fall Fun
Tumblr media
my mind is empty. i bought a halloween squishmallow and decorative pillows for fall. so i wrote a blurb about it. enjoy!
"Baby...What...?"
"I can explain!" you blurted, rushing over to your fiance.
"I hope you can," Harry murmured as he picked up a throw pillow from the couch. "I can hardly see the sofa under all these."
"There was a sale," you began. "I was only going to the craft store for puzzle glue because I finished my puzzle this morning and I wanted to hang it up, but then I saw the Fall and Halloween section and..."
"And you turned our living room into Halloweentown," Harry said.
"You remembered!" you said, trying to shift the subject off all the Fall decor that now lived in your home.
You really didn't mean to buy all the decorations—the throw pillows, the blanket with pumpkins and candy corns and warm toned leaves on it, the welcome mat that said, Hocus Pocus!, and all the little decorations that were perfectly arranged on the kitchen counter. You'd been proud of how perfect your home looked, how everything tied together so nicely. Now that Harry was here, though, you worried you'd overdone it. Or worse, he'd make you take it all back.
"Course I remember," Harry said. "You've only made me watch it every year since we've been together."
"I—I know it's a lot," you said, trying to hide a stuffed vampire holding a little pumpkin spiced latte behind you and out of his eyesight. "But you know I love decorating, I mean I did the whole house when we moved in—very tastefully, I might add—and I love the holidays an—and themes, and—You're laughing at me."
Harry shook his head, chuckling softly. He took your face in his hands and kissed your forehead. That was definitely not the reaction you were expecting. Some light teasing? Sure. Insisting you take at least some of it back? Probably. But you mentally crossed your fingers that you could keep it all. Right down to the mummy mugs and ghost candle holders.
"I've been waiting for this day, if I'm honest. I'm surprised it didn't come sooner. Starbucks changed their menu two weeks ago."
Blushing, you held Harry's hand as it rested on your cheek. "Do you hate it? If you hate it, I can scale it back."
"I love it," he said. "And I love you."
He led you to the couch where he took the same stuffed vampire you tried to hide and held it against his stomach. You took the blanket that rested on top of the couch and draped it over yourself and Harry, snuggling up close to his side. You kissed his cheek a couple times, stomach flipping when you felt his grin beneath your lips.
"No Halloween movies yet, because it's not October, but..."
"Way ahead of you," Harry said, reaching for the remote and firing up Netflix on the TV.
"I knew you liked the show as much as I do," you said with a grin.
"You realize it's actually quite hot out, right?" he said, but pulled you closer anyway as he made himself more comfortable.
You shushed him as the theme song played. You'd thought of that already, and the air conditioning was already pumping through the vents to make it the perfect temperature for hiding under the fluffy blanket. And drink warm drinks. And cuddle in bed with the twinkly lights you put up earlier while listening to music.
"I know it's silly. I know it's...a little over the top, but—"
"Hey, I think it's cute how excited you get over the holidays," he said. "And, just because I know how much you love Autumn, so I got you something."
"Autumn," you repeated, imitating his accent. "What did you get?"
"An appropriately themed seasonal puzzle that we can complete together."
Your eyes lit up immediately. "You bought us a puzzle?"
Harry kissed you repeatedly, his fingers holding your chin lovingly. "I happen to like this season too, you know. Not as much as you, but I do. And puzzles. And you. Easy math."
You sighed and rested against his chest, kissing him over the soft material of his shirt a few times. Harry said it was fine, but you could admit that your love for this particular season was a little intense. But you loved putting a room together, making it feel warm and inviting and festive. And each item you put in your cart was part of a vision you had, and once you had said vision, you had to make it come to life. It was how you ended up putting all the rooms together in the house when you and Harry moved in. He had input of course, but he knew you had a knack for decorating and trusted your judgement.
And you couldn't help but think of the future too. Yours and Harry's. You wanted to do this for your kids, to raise them in a home that was cheery and fun. It was something neither you nor Harry had yourselves growing up, so you wanted something new. New traditions that you could start together.
You couldn't wait to share a lifetime of feeling cozy and cuddling festive pillows with Harry. You couldn't wait to watch movies and do puzzles and make pumpkin flavored baked goods with him for the rest of your life, or sew costumes for your kids because what they wanted couldn't be found at the party store. You wanted all of it, and you wanted it with him.
"I really do love this show, you know. I'd never heard of it, and now I can quote it," Harry mumbled. His eyes were trained on the show playing in front of him while his fingers traced patterns on your arm idly. Then, he looked down at you and smiled. "Our first real tradition, don't you think?"
Your heart squeezed with delight. You knew Harry loved you, that was never a doubt in your mind. But hearing him say that, knowing that he had lofty visions of the future too, made you hold him just a little bit tighter.

drunk | arthurtv
hello!
here is my long awaited arthurtv fic number two for you guys. the last one got so much love and i'm so glad it went down as well as it did - panic set in soon after i posted it because i thought it was going to flop rather dramatically so thank you for all the love and comments made; it meant so much.
currently ill with the worst blocked ear/ear infection and i've had to wait for a long while to get myself a doctors appointment so i've had plenty of time to write this current fic and dabble in a couple of other ideas i've had over the last few days.
enjoy! x
--- reader note; mentions of sick, slight hints of sex, drunk arthur, heavy public displays of affection ---
*
At two in the morning, YN was glad that the train station had an open Costa coffee kiosk.
One; to help with the tiredness she felt from having to stay up so late because she was prepared and ready to fall asleep and get, at least, a few hours of sleep before Arthur stumbled through the door in the drunken state she expected him to be in after being on the drink all day. And two; to help with the chill in the air because it was almost zero degrees and the wind was biting at the skin beneath her hoodie every time a train left its platform or every time there was a breeze that blew through the constantly open doors of the station. Her eyelids felt heavy and the chill in the station bit at her exposed cheeks, her nose running and she was forever sniffing, so her fingertips would have definitely gone numb without the much-needed Costa cup of coffee she was nursing in her hands.
She was one of the only a small handful of people waiting at Paddington; but then, given it was almost 1am, she expected nothing but quiet and emptiness in contrast to how it would have been a few hours prior to arriving. The train from Cardiff was one of the last trains to come into London for the night and she couldn’t imagine it would be chaos to try and find her boyfriend and his two friends amongst the hustle and bustle of those clambering off the train. There was a young man sitting on a bench in the distance, hood over his head and his headphones over his ears, as he kept a close eye on the boards above. There was a couple who must have been in their mid-fifties, or so YN presumed, who seemed to be waiting for one of their children to come home, given what was written on a small banner they’d decorated for their arrival - proud parents, she thought, because she wouldn’t have dared tell her own parents about getting a train home that was to dock at almost one in the morning. And there was a security officer walking around, making sure no one was causing any problems, wearing a thick coat that YN was extremely jealous of because she could imagine how warm he was.
She heard them before she saw them.
“YN!”
George was the first to greet her, arms open wide as he engulfed her into a hug, his green hoodie tied around the waist of his shorts because he was clearly susceptible to cold air that London had to offer that night, not a care in the world to the goosebumps rising on the surface of his skin. Although, she could vouch for him because the weather was beautifully warm when they left for Wales that morning. His hat placed backwards on his head and he could barely walk in a straight line in her direction, shoelace undone and she kept a close eye on him to make sure he didn’t trip and fall flat on his face. Everyone knew what a typical Platform Roulette filming day entailed - plenty of drink, plenty of shots, plenty of piss-taking and plenty of fun - so she expected nothing less than what was standing before her.
“Thank you so much for this,” he hums and she could smell the beer on his breath. His chin rested upon her shoulder and she would be lying if she said she wasn’t basking in the warmth he was radiating, “you’re the best.”
“I didn’t really have a choice, did I? Couldn’t leave you three stranded in the middle of London in the freezing cold, drunk out of your minds and wandering around without a clue on where you were going,” she snorted, patting him on the back as she pulled away from him, taking a long sip of her coffee to keep the feeling of heat running through her body, “you’re welcome, though. Nice knowing that you’ll get back safely. And it’s a free trip home so you’d be three fools to turn it down.”
Arthur Hill was the next to give her a hug and he clearly wasn’t as drunk as George seemed to be so she was intrigued to know just how well her boyfriend had handled his drink that day. He whispered a thank you, pressed a kiss to her cheek, and pulled away from her before following George towards the station exit where they disappeared around the corner.
“Baaabe,” Arthur smiled, slurring the term of endearment incredibly heavily and YN knew she was in for a long, long night when they arrived back at her flat. His eyelids were sunken, his cheeks were rosey-red and he had a silly smile upon his face that she only saw when he’d sunken more pints than he could handle, hair messed upon his head, hoodie tied around his shoulders in a makeshift cape hanging down his back, “I missed you today.”
He draped himself over her in the tightest hug he could muster, almost knocking the two of them to the floor in the middle of Paddington station, and she could feel eyes boring into the back of her skull as people watched the two of them - anyone would think they’d not seen each other for months on end and it was a reunion for all to see. His hugs were invigorating and she’d take his arms over anything comforting. He was her safety net and seeing him after a day of not hearing from him, it made her feel soft and ready to melt at his feet.
“Are you drunk? Or are you drunk drunk?”
“What’s the difference?” He grinned cheekily, swinging his arm around her shoulders and pulling her into his side, pressing the sloppiest and wettest kiss against her temple as they started their walk towards the exit, “m’just a little drunk. Only a little bit.”
The beer stain on his trousers and the strong smell of sambuca and the faint smell of beer on his breath said differently but that was a conversation for when he was sober and could almost remember everything that happened that day. Which she was in major doubts about. Because it seemed like he couldn’t remember how to walk, let alone walk in a straight line, and she guessed she would have to wait for the Platform Roulette video to be posted online before she got the full rundown of his day.
His hands kept wandering across her body as they stepped foot closer and closer to the exit of the station; his arm occasionally wrapping around her waist and his hand brushing against her bum, his fingers tickling across the expanse of her chest when he laid his arm across her shoulders, and as humorous as she found it, she didn’t fancy being groped (playfully, might she add) in the middle of the train station where there were eyes watching the two of them.
“Stop it,” she warned him in a hushed tone, “save it for home.”
“But you just look so good-” a hiccup interrupted his sentence and he swallowed back a burp before she carried on, “you look so so good in my clothes.” And it came out as a whine, like a child not getting what they wanted, one foot tripping over the other as she tried her best to keep him from falling flat on his face.
“First thing I could find in my room after you texted me to come and pick you up.”
“Well, you should wear more of my clothes. Suit you better than me,” they stepped foot outside and she felt his arm tighten around her shoulder, pulling her closer to his side to keep the two of them as far out of the cold as possible, and she really couldn’t wait to get back home. Back under the warmth of her blanket, back under the bedding she had on her bed, and back with the hot-water bottle she had resting behind her back before she left, “or you could just wear nothing at all. I love it when you’ve got nothing on, more than I love you wearing my clothes.”
“Cheeky as per usual, mister Television,” George cackled as he overhead the last little bit of their conversation, wiggling his eyebrows in his direction, “we best get home quick so Arthur can get his-”
Arthur charged for him and covered his mouth, shaking his head, “there is a lady present,” he looked in YN’s direction and she rolled her eyes, “besides, she knows what we’re gonna be doing later.”
She snorted at his comment and begrudgingly wiggled from underneath his arm, her car keys sitting heavy in the pocket of her hoodie as she fished them out, unlocking her car door to allow the three of them, who seemed to already be fighting over who got the front seat, to clamber inside.
*
“Are you in need of a sick bucket tonight?”
She walked into her bedroom, with a glass of water in one hand and two paracetamol tablets in the palm of her other hand, and saw Arthur tucked up in her bed. His blue t-shirt chucked on the floor in a heap of cotton and his beige trousers left at the door as a reminder to put them in the wash the following morning, his rucksack hanging on the back of her desk chair and his shoes kicked off next to the fluffy slippers she kept beside her en-suite bathroom. A tea light was lit under the wax burner she had upon the shelf above her bed, emitting the smell of cinnamon and gingerbread around her room, the flickering flame adding a sense of sensual comfort to the room, casting shadows in her room and upon his face.
“I can handle my liquor,” he stated and shook his head, snuggling a little further down upon the mattress and patting her side of the bed with his hand, “I told you I’m only a little drunk, I promise. Now come and lay down with me.”
“I just want to get everything ready before I get settled,” she insisted as she placed the glass of water and the paracetamol on the bedside table that was closest to him, ready for him to take in the morning, “and I need to make sure you’re set for any headaches or whatever.”
He watched as she flitted around her bedroom, making sure the bathroom light was off and that his shoes were placed a little neater than how they’d been left, kicking his t-shirt towards his trousers so neither of them tripped over the items when they needed a wee in the middle of the night. She threw a couple more pillows on the bed, because she hated laying flat when she slept, and he helped out by placing them where she would normally have them, which she felt incredibly grateful for. And, as she stepped closer to the bed, he reached for her hand and gave it a gentle tug - enough was enough and he felt she was spiraling in her tired state.
“You look after me so well,” he smiled softly, dropping her hand and grabbing her waist, pulling her onto the bed, the duvet slipping from his chest and exposing his nude upper half for her eyes to divulge. She situated her legs either side of his, hands on his shoulders, fingers combing through the hair at the nape of his neck and her eyes couldn’t leave his, “I love you so much.”
“I love you too,” she hummed, pressing a kiss to his cheek as he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer to his body, shuffling around into a more comfortable position, “it’s lucky we’re not doing anything tomorrow because I’m getting the feeling we won’t be sleeping much tonight.”
“That’s cheeky,” he smirked, hiding his face in her neck and pressing a litter of kisses across her collarbone, “but you’re so correct, baby.”
*

Cowboys are frequently (secretly) fond of each other.
Tags: Dean Winchester x Cowboy! Reader, fluff, flirting, male reader, soft romance.
Warnings: possibly OOC, no use of Y/N, implied violence toward an animal, references to “taking someone home” (I’ll let you interpret that how you want.), romantic-ish interactions between dean and reader toward the end.

Walking into the bar, I see heads raise.  I try not to pay them any mind.  I know what kind of impression I give off.  I’m tall, shaggy hair that barely kisses my shoulders, dressed like I just wandered off the set of a Clint Eastwood movie.
I know what kind of expectations I'm supposed to fulfill.  People look at me and they see a cowboy.  A man’s man.  A straight man.
I shake my head, trying to rid myself of that entire train of thought.  My dad taught me that if this was the way I was going to live my life, I needed to stop worrying about what others thought of me.  I walk over to the bar and order a beer.  The bartender hands me a frosty bottle.  I put my ring under the cap, tilt the bottle and push.  The cap pops off and I take a swig.  I put my beer on the bar, wrapping my hands around it like it’s a mug of hot coffee.  I look around the bar, watching the people.
It’s a habit I picked up.  Me and my dad would go to a bar, and he’d order me a Coke and point out all the small details that a quick glance couldn’t catch.
The woman at the bar had just been divorced, the tan line on her ring finger.  The couple in the booth are cheating on each other, seen by the way they sit.  The man at his table is waiting for his friend, he’s fallen madly in love with him.
I smile for a moment.  It’s been a few years, but I'm out.  My dad didn’t like that I wanted to leave, but he’d understood.  I got an honest job working at a ranch.  The hours were long, and the work was hard, but I felt like it was a job I could be proud of.
The doorbell rang and a gust of summer air blew into the bar.  I look over at the door.  In walks the most stunning man I've ever seen.
He was dressed in a suit, with brown hair that almost looked like gold in this light.  Eyes that may have been green, but I couldn't tell from this far away.  Freckles and stubble decorated his face in a way that complemented each other.
I clear my throat and look away.  A man in a bar like this dressed like that was here for a girl.  But, no.  His posture suggested he was here on business.
I turn back to my beer.  I didn't need to find a man to glance at for the rest of the night.  I look down at my drink, trying to clear my head.  I sit like that for a moment, savoring my beer.  Someone settles into the seat beside me.  I look over, and he’s smiling back at me.
My face burns hot, and I hope that the lights are dim enough that he can’t see me.  I turn back to my beer.  I hear him order a drink, his voice strong and deep.  He turns back to me, beer in hand.
“You’re ____, right?”  Dear god, how does he know my name?
“Special Agent Hammett, FBI.”  oh. That explains it.
“Yeah, I am.  Why do you ask?”
“We’re investigating the cattle deaths that are happening at your ranch and we wanted to know if you’ve seen anything strange.”
“Strange?”
“Cold spots, weird smells, crop failures…”
“No, just the cows.”
“And what would you say happened?”
“I just… went into work one day and there was a bull ripped to shreds.”
He nods.  “Could I see it?”
The next day, I was showing Agent Hammet onto the ranch.  The way the sun hit his eyes was one of the most beautiful things I've seen.  Like seeing the way the light hits the trees for the first time.  I look away.  I need to focus on why we’re here.
I led him toward the barn.  Inside a cooler, the bull’s body was resting.  The agent pulled on some gloves and started looking through the body.  I look away from the corpse and try to suppress the urge to vomit.
Eventually, he pulls out a small tooth.  Small and pointed, it was very scary looking.  “It looks like a fang…” He turns to me.  “Is there anything that lives around here that might leave something like this?”
I shake my head. “No, not that I know of.”  He puts the tooth into a tiny bag and pockets it.
He looks up at me, and he must see the sick look on my face, because he stands up and says, “Let me buy you a drink.”  We both climbed into his car, a nice-looking thing.
“I can’t believe the FBI lets you drive this car around.”  He just smiles, still looking at the road.  “They do.”
I shake my head, a goofy grin stretched onto my face. “I don’t know, seems a little conspicuous.”
“You’d be surprised.”  I looked over at him.  His smile is gone, looking at the road lost in the thought.  When I look at him, I just want to reach over and-
I look out at the road.  I can’t entertain that thought.  I refuse to.  I glance over and I find him looking at me.  He turns his eyes back to the road.
Eventually, we found our way back to the bar.  Walking inside, it was deserted.  We chose the same seats we picked last time.  Ordered the same drinks.  We settled in, sitting in silence for the longest time.  It's not uncomfortable, just quiet.
He watches me.  I can feel his eyes in all of their silent intensity.  I want to look back at him, but I know if I do, he’ll break his gaze.  “So, what do you make of this, cowboy?”  I laugh to myself.  “What?”
I finally look back at him.  “The last person who called me cowboy, I ended up taking home with me.”
He gives me a soft smile.  “Who says I wouldn't want to go home with you?”
I look away, my eyes wide.  My face is a bright burning red.  He throws his head back and laughs.  I put my face in my hands, trying to make my face normal again.  He places a hand on my back, and I startle.  I groan to myself.  Jesus Christ, this man is making me act like a teenage girl.
I look over at him and he’s still watching me.  We fall into another silence, this one not uncomfortable like the last.  Peaceful, like the answer to everything was in each other’s eyes.  He reaches over and tucks a few stray hairs behind my ears.  My breathing began to slow, my heartbeat decreasing.
I slowly place my hand on his face.  A few of my fingers gently touched his jaw.  I watch his eyes dart around my face, maybe doing the same thing I did last night.  Searching for micro expressions, any type of indicator that this was too good to be true.  I realized something.
I pull my hand away from his face.  “Are you...?”
His brow furrowed in confusion.  “Am I what?”
“Are you a hunter?”
His eyes widened for a moment.  His chest begins to go up and down a little bit more.  He was breathing heavily.  I’d caught him.
“How do you know what hunters are?”
I look up and watch as my father enters the bar.
“We have a lot to talk about.”

christmas eve - rafe cameron
SUMMARY: spending your first christmas eve with rafe
WORD COUNT: 1.2k
WARNINGS: none
a/n: started this in december and JUST remembered it and finished it today. enjoy! also check out my most recent rafe fic
You hung the last ornament up on your Christmas tree just as Rafe entered your living room holding two mugs of hot chocolate. "Finished decorating?" he asked you. You looked at him for a long moment. He was wearing the red and black plaid pajamas you'd got him as an early present paired with a plain black sweatshirt, identical to the outfit you were wearing.
You nodded, taking one of the mugs from him and sitting down on the couch. "Do you like it?" you asked him, almost nervously. It was the first Christmas that you would spend with Rafe in your shared apartment, and the quality of the decorations was very important to you.
He examined the tree, pretending to give his answer a lot of thought, "it's perfect," he said eventually, a proud smile on display and leaning down toward you to press his lips to yours.
"Can you believe it's already Christmas Eve?" you asked him, taking a sip of your hot chocolate.
Rafe shook his head a little, sitting down next to you and stretching his legs out, resting his feet on the coffee table. He wrapped an arm around your shoulders, leaning into you a little, "you know, I've never looked forward to Christmas until this year."
You gave him a funny look, "really? Why's that?"
He shrugged a little, "I don't know, I mean Christmas with my disfunctional family was never really all that enjoyable." You played with the ends of his hair as he talked, listening intently, "growing up, my dad was never home for Christmas, and Rose certainly wasn't the Christmas spirit type. It was just like a regular day really, we just opened a present alone in our rooms and then...went on with our lives."
You frowned, "Rafe, I had no idea," you said softly and he shook his head and shrugged his shoulders, dismissing it. "Well, this is all the more reason to make this Christmas perfect," you added with a smile and a kiss to the side of his head.
Rafes eyes lit up a little, and a smile developed on his face, physically unable to not show his excitement. "Can we make cookies?"
You chuckled at his enthusiasm, "we'll do anything you want, baby," you pressed a kiss to his lips.
"Anything?" he said with a smirk you knew all too well.
You hit his arm lightly, shaking your head, “you know what I mean. Christmas activities.”
"Fine," he huffed, but the smile didn't leave his face. He hopped up off of the couch and reached out for your hand, "cookies now?"
You took his hand and he practically dragged you to the kitchen excitedly. He began to take out ingredients, bowls, and different trays, immediately starting to measuring out ingredients. You watched him in awe, a confused look on your face, "you don't need a recipe?"
He looked up at you, "oh, I um- I used to make cookies with Wheezie every year for birthday. She wasn't a big fan of cake, so.." he said sheepishly, a slight shrug of his shoulders.
You smiled at his confession. Every day you learned something new about Rafe Cameron, and everyday you fell in love with him a little more. "That's adorable, Rafe. That's the kind of thing you put on an online dating profile," you said with a laugh.
"I'm never going to need one of those. I have you," he said matter-of-factly, flicking a little flour in your face.
You turned on your speaker in the kitchen, putting on a Christmas music playlist and helped Rafe with the cookies.
4 batches of cookies and 2 flour fights later, you were both sitting up on the kitchen counter waiting for the cookies to cool off.
"Tell me about your Christmas growing up," Rafe said, turning toward you and sitting with his legs crossed.
You mirrored his position, touching your knees to his, "well, we lived in New York for a long time, so most Christmases were cold and snowy. Which is just how I like it. It was always just me, my mom and my little sister. We would pick out a tree together and decorate it while we watched a Christmas movie. On Christmas day, my whole moms side of the family would come to town and we would open presents together and eat dinner. Ooh, and me and my mom would always make the most amazing Christmas pudding together. One year, after dinner we decided to take a walk around central park, and that became a tradition."
Rafe smiled at the way your eyes lit up when you talked. "That sounds like the perfect Christmas. You really liked it in New York, didn't you?"
You nodded a little, "I really did," you said softly. Looking back at him, you noticed the ever so slight frown on his face, "but I love it here too. You know why?"
He smiled, very clearly knowing why, "hmm no, why?"
"Because here, I have you," you said with a big grin on your face, pulling him closer by the back of his neck, kissing him softly.
Your timer on your phone went off, interrupting your sweet moment with Rafe. "Cookies are cooled," you said, pecking his lips one more time before hopping off of the counter. "Now, we frost them," you said with a grin as you grabbed the icing from the fridge.
You both sat down on the chairs at the counter, icing your cookies and listening to the music, occasionally smearing a blob of icing onto the others face.
"I'm dreaming of a White Christmas."
You turned your head at the sound of Rafe's soft singing with a smile on your face. His singing was off key in every way possible, but somehow it was the most beautiful sound you'd ever heard.
You put the cookie you were decorating back down on the counter, standing up and placing yourself behind him, "dance with me," you whispered into his ear.
He turned around in the chair, getting up and following you to the middle of the kitchen. Rafe wrapped his arms loosely around your waist, pulling you close to him. You interlocked your hands around his neck, smiling at the butterflies you still got around Rafe.
Your eyes stayed glued on his face as you danced to White Christmas, watching as his eyes sparkled in a way they only did with you; with nothing but love.
You rested your head onto his shoulder, breathing in his scent. He leaned his head onto yours, rubbing circles onto the exposed part of your back. "Hey Rafe?" you whispered.
"Mhm?"
"This has been the best Christmas Eve I've ever had."
He leaned back to rest his forehead against yours, a grin on his face, "me too, baby."

Aizawa x class 1-A reader when he finds out reader is also doing vigilante work? I’ve always wondered how he would feels about that
Icl I feel like he would understand tbh like he was probably doing the exact same thing before his career took off. He has a very strong moral standpoint so I figure he would place justice above legality but hes still a teacher and would have to disapprove but he wouldn't be like angry??
I feel like this was portrayed in the anime but it's been a hot minute since I've watched it - what do you think? :D
𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 <3
Check out my kinktober!
𝐀𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐰𝐚 𝐱 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 (𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜) - 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dark circles decorate your eyes as you sit slouched at the desk before class starts. Sleep had eluded you as you spent the night with your parents, helping them feed into their warped, self-indulgent sense of justice by doing vigilante work.
Usually, you'd consider yourself to be at a strong, good moral standpoint, focused on doing good by the people rather than focusing on legality and logistics. But to be quite honest, this self-righteous act of "freeing the people" is starting to become exhausting. It's actually getting on your nerves, really.
You love your parents, but they can be very, exhaustingly eccentric at times, and sometimes outright smug. It's absolutely infuriating. It's so difficult to watch that it hurts, and the more you think about it, the more bitter you begin to feel.
Or maybe this is just the exhaustion talking. Who knows?
It feels like you're just sacrificing little pieces of yourself at this point, giving your body and soul to some 'vigilante work' and your training to persue your career as a hero.
Aizawa is the first to notice the change in your attitude. He is the first to realise that you may be burning out, and he's the first to genuinely worry about you.
As your teacher, and considering the amount of security hazards your class has been subject to in the last year, Aizawa is well within his right to keep tabs on all of you and your home lives. He knows your secret.
After class ends, you're pulled aside by your teacher.
Part of you wants to cry. What is it this time? A failed test? Maybe a lecture on missed homework.
Apparently not. And judging by the look on his face, it's much more serious than a missed assignment. He looks... genuinely concerned, which is an expression you've gotten to see far too many times than you should have to. Wow, you think. The poor guy deserves a break.
"I know what you've been doing every other night, so don't bother trying to lie. I want to say that I'm proud you're taking your hero work so seriously, but don't you think you're overdoing it? Maybe even just a little? You're exhausting yourself, and pretty soon you're going to burn out. Did you even sleep last night?"
Oh, like he can talk about sleep and burnout of all things.
And really, he can. But the brewing bitterness and hostility inside of you is starting to bubble, and you can feel in the back of your throat that a breakdown is imminent. God, don't cry. Please, not now, of all times.
Shiny, salty tears start to collect at your waterline, and the tired teacher lets out a defeated sigh, placing his hand on your shoulder. It's an oddly comforting gesture, really.
"I-... I just want to help... My parents will go out with or without me- and they're not very experienced- so I just worry that if I'm not there, something will happen..."
"Look... The first part of helping is knowing how to best help yourself. Look after yourself, or you might not live long enough to see yourself become the hero you've always wanted to be... Youre a hero, not a martyr - the self sacrifice isn't necessary yet."
Wise words from a man who's seen it all.
He looks disappointed in you, at the very least, but there's a spark of pride in his eye for his tryhard students who do the best they can, and even if you don't see it yet, you will soon enough.

Ok I have a request idea. It’s the readers first time meeting Mattys Mom/family. It’s like Christmas or something. It’s all cute and then they fuck in Matty’s childhood bedroom lmao
Family Christmas
Tumblr media
Summary : You go over to Mattys childhood home for Christmas, and finally get to meet his family. And also mess around a bit in his old bedroom
Paring : Matty Healy x afab! reader
Warnings : Smut, alcohol mention?, meeting the family.
Notes: This is such an adorable idea! i hope i did you proud anon!
Tumblr media
"Matty, are you sure it'll be ok? I don't want to intrude on your family christmas" you say as matty packs both his and your suitcases in the trunk of his car. "Baby I'm positive, plus my mum is dying to meet you" he says, before slamming the trunk door shut. "Ok" you whisper, before slipping into the passenger seat. Matty quickly hops into the drivers seat and starts the car, before pulling out of the driveway.
You spend most of the car ride looking out the window, too much in your own head to talk to matty.
His hand being placed on your thigh is what snaps you out of your thoughts. "Y/n, baby it'll be ok I promise" matty says, trying his best to calm your nerves. "I know, but what if they don't like me?" you say, and turn to face him. "Baby they're going to love you, my mum couldn't stop telling me how excited she is for you to join us" Matty says, looking over at you quickly before focusing back on the road. "Ok, Sorry about all this, its just I've never met the family before so this is big '' you say, "I know baby, it'll be fun though I promise" he says, gently squeezing your thigh to comfort you.
After about an hour, you both arrived at his childhood home. "Wow this is beautiful" you say, as you admire the old victorian style home, "Isn't it? I always loved it when I was a kid, I'm excited to show you around!" he says, as he puts the car in park and turns it off. He turns to face you, the smile never leaving his face as he sees how excited you are to be there. "Ready to head inside?" he asks, "Ready as I'll ever be" you respond, before both of you get out of the car.
Matty grabbed both of your bags out of the trunk, while you carried the bag of presents, and the two of you walked up the gravel path to the front door. Matty carefully set the bags down and knocked on the door. You heard a voice shout "coming!" from inside the house, and a second later the door swung open to reveal his mom. "Hello My dears! Happy you made it here safe!" Denise said, before pulling her oldest son into a hug. Once she pulled away from Matty, her eyes met yours. "Ah you must be Y/N, wow matty she's even prettier in person!" she says, which causes you to blush. "It's a pleasure to meet you" you say, "You too dear! I'm so happy you were able to join us" Denise said, as she sent a warm smile your way, you could tell she wanted to hug you but couldn't since you had the bag of presents in your hand. "Now come inside before you freeze! I'll make some tea for you both while you settle in" she says, quickly ushering you both into the warm house.
" I'll show us to our room" Matty says, and you quickly follow him up the staircase. He opens the door to his childhood bedroom, and you smile as you take in the old decor. "Wow" you say, your eyes slowly scanning all the old rock poster he had hung up on the walls. "What?" he asks, "You were definitely a nerd for rock and roll weren't you healy" you tease, before placing the bag of present down on the floor. Matty looks over at you with a fake hurt expression, "Hey! Am not" he says, causing you to chuckle. "Are too" you say back, laughing at the childish exchange you guys are having.
Before you know it he's tackling you onto his bed, his hands going to your sides to tickle you. You giggle and squirm as he continues his tickle assault on you, "Ma-matty stop" you giggle, "Not until you apologize and say I'm the sexist man alive" he teases. You roll your eyes at him, "F-fine I'm sorry" you say as best as you can, while still being tickled. "Thank you baby but you're missing the last part" he says, you roll you eyes again and say "You're the sexist man alive", and with that he stops tickling you. "Glad you finally admitted it" he teases, still hovering over you on his bed, "You're so full of yourself Healy" you joke as you look up at your boyfriend. "Yeah but you love when you're full of m-" he says but you cut him off, "Matty!" you scold, your face going bright red at what he was about say. "What it's true" he says, before leaning down and kissing you. "Come on we should probably head downstairs before your mom thinks we're having sex" you joke, gently pushing him off of you and getting up from the bed. You reach you hand out for him to take, which he does, and the two of you make it back downstairs and to the kitchen where you see Denise preparing the tea.
"Oh Y/N, now that you don't have a bag in your hand I can finally give you a hug" she says, before wiping her hands on a towel and pulling you into a warm embrace. "I'm so glad you were able to join us" she whispers in your ear, which causes you to smile. "Thank you for inviting me" you say as you both pull away from the hug. "Of course! You're part of the family now Y/N, you're always welcome here" Denise says, before going back over to finish preparing the tea.
"See I told you she'd love you" Matty whispers in your ear, as he comes up behind you and wraps his arms around your waist. "But not as much as I love you of course" he says, before kissing your cheek, you smile and turn your head just enough so you could place a quick kiss on his lips. "I love you too" you whisper as you pull away from the kiss and smile.
After dinner, the four of you, the fourth being Lincoln, Denise's husband, who arrived a little before dinner, decided it would be a good idea to call it a night since tomorrow was going to be a busy day. "Good night My dears! Sleep well" Denise says as she gives both you and matty a kiss on the check and a hug goodnight. "Goodnight" you both say in response, before heading back to Mattys room. The two of quickly get changed into your Pajamas, before cuddling up in Mattys old bed and falling asleep.
The next day you were woken up by the familiar smell of bacon, you were about to elbow matty awake, but realized he wasn't beside you anymore. You quickly got out of bed and got dressed, before making your way down the stairs and into the kitchen.
"Good morning my love" matty says in a sing songy voice, as he walks up to you and kisses your cheek. "Goodmorning baby" you whisper, "I hope you're hungry dear because we have a full breakfast" Denise says from behind Matty. "I'm starving and everything looks and smells delicious" you say as you look at the array of breakfast foods on the kitchen counter.
After breakfast, you and matty spent the rest of the afternoon helping Denise cook and decorate for dinner tonight. "You know you're my favoirte of all of mattys girlfriends" Denise says as you both scoop out cookie dough onto sheet pans. You blush at her compliments "You're too sweet" you say, "I mean it, I've never seen him this happy before" she says, before placing her completed cookie sheet, as well as yours, into the oven. "I've never been this happy before" you say as a smile forms on your face, "He's my bestfriend and my boyfriend, what more could I ask for? I mean I never knew love like this could exist till I met him" you finish. "Aww young love" Denise coos as she pulls you into a quick hug, "I'll clean up here if you wanna go find Matty" she says as she picks up the dishes, "No, let me help, after all I did make half of this mess" you joke, but Denise shakes her head "I insist dear go find Matthew" she chuckles as she nudges you out of the kitchen.
You make you way up the stairs, knowing you'll probably find matty in his room. And sure enough as soon as you get to the top step you hear the soft strumming of his guitar coming from his childhood bedroom. You slowly make your way to his room and carefully open the door. "Beautiful as always" you say as you lean against the door frame. Matty stops playing, and turns to face you, "Why thank you my love" he says and places his guitar down, before walking up to you. "Did you have fun baking cookies with my mum?" he asks, his hands finding their way to your hips and pulling you closer. "Yeah it was alot of fun" you say, and reach up to brush a few stray curls from his forehead. "I'm excited to meet your brother and the rest of your family tonight" you say, "Me too, it's going to be fun but you let me know if they ever get too overwhelming ok?" he says, you nod your head before he places a soft kiss to your forehead.
It was now late in the evening, the events of the night were already underway. Most of mattys immediate and extended family was stuffed inside the house, all ready to celebrate the holiday together. For you however, it was hard to focus on what was going on at the party, because you couldn't stop staring at your boyfriend, who looked incredibly stunning.
You watched from afar as he effortlessly conversed with one of his cousins. You felt your heart speed up as he made eye contact with you, quickly sending a wink in your direction, before going back to the conversation. You don't know what had come over you that evening, maybe it was the wine you had been drinking or maybe it was just matty, but every bone in your body wanted him, no needed him.
You decided to slip away from the living room and make your way up to his bedroom, hoping that maybe not seeing him would help you cool down just enough so you could return back to the party. But as you laid down on his bed, staring up at the ceiling which was littered with tiny glow and the dark stars, you couldn't help but imagine all the things you wanted him to do to you in that moment.
Just as you were about to slip your hand under the waist band of you skirt, you heard the door open. You quickly pulled your hand away and sat up to see who was there, "Matty?" you say, recognizing the familiar silhouette. "Hey baby" he says, the words roll of his tongue effortlessly, making the urge to squeeze your thighs together for relief even stronger. "Wh-what are you doing up here?" you ask as you see him gently close and lock the door behind him before walking over to his bed. "Well I went to go see if you were ok, I saw you slip away upstairs and came to check on you. Now i see you were ok, just horny" he teases. You blush furiously as you realize you have been caught "How can I not when you look like that" you say, motioning towards him. He chuckles lowly, before kicking off his shoes and hovering over you on the bed. "I do look pretty hot don't i?" he says, gently pushing you back down on the bed. You roll your eyes and giggle "Way to ruin the moment Healy" you tease. He smirks at you and slowly runs his hand up your thigh, stopping it right over your soaked panties. "Mm your body says otherwise baby" he whispers and slowly applies pressure to your clothed core, causing you to moan in pleasure.
"Shh baby don't want anyone to hear how good I make you feel" he says, before hooking his fingers in the elastic of your underwear and slowly pulling them down your legs. You gasp as the cold air hits your naked core, "Please matty" you whisper, desperate for his touch. "What do you want baby?" he whispers, slowly placing hot open mouth kisses to your neck. "You" you whimper as you feel his hand make its way back up to your core. He chuckles lowly "you want my cock darling? Is that it" he teases, as his finger slowly rubs circles on your clit. You have to bite your lip to hold back your moans. "What me to fuck you like the slut you are baby? My familys down stairs and you're up here just begging to be fucked" he taunts. "Please matty, I need you" you beg, your hands reach out and unbuckle his belt. He watches as you slowly unzip his black dress pants, and groans when he feels you palm him over his boxers. "You got a condom?" you ask, desperate to have more than his fingers inside of you. He quickly removes his fingers from you and gets off the bed in search for a condom.
After finding one in his old sock drawer he comes back to you. He slowly pulls his boxers down just enough to reveal himself to you. You watch closely as he gently rolls the condom on himself and goes back to hovering over you. "Remember be quiet baby" he whispers, before lining himself up with your entrance and slowly pushing in. He captures your lips in his, swallowing your moans as he quickly sinks deeper inside of you. He gives you a minute to adjust before gently rocking his hips back and forth. Your fingers find their way to his curls and quickly tug on them as you hold back your moans.
"You take me so well baby" he whispers in your ear, as he speeds up his thrusts. "Matty" you moan, not being able to hold it back as you feel him hit a deeper spot inside of you. One of his hands makes its way up to your neck and applies a bit of pressure "Shh or they're hear baby" he scolds. The  pressure on your neck and the way his cock is continuously hitting the sweet spot inside of you begins to become to much, causing you to feel the familiar tenison build in your stomach.
Matty catches you by surprise, when he flips you guys over, his back now on the bed and you straddling his lap. After a second to adjust to the new position, you quickly rock your hips back and forth, having to hold onto his chest for support as the pleasure begins to become to much.
All it takes to make you finish is matty to thrusting up into you every time you rock your hips forward. You collapse onto his chest as your orgasm washes over you. You feel him thrust into you a few times more before he stalls inside of you. You look up at him and send him a dopey grin "I love you" you whisper, before you lean up and place a kiss on his lips. "I love you too" he says, before gently helping you off of him. He places you down on the bed, before getting up and disposing of the condom.
"We should probably head back down before people come to look for us" you say, carefully getting off the bed and going to retrieve your underwear. "If they ask us where we went i'll just say how needy you were for my co-" but you elbow him before he can finish. "If you say that I'll punch you" you joke, as you fix the collar of his shirt, so it doesn't look like you just had sex. "Aw come on you love me" he teases, "True, but would rather not have your family know about our sex lives" you joke, as you go to fix your hair and outfit in the mirror. "Come on lets head downstairs" you say, as you grab his hand and lead both of you out the door and back down to the party . Everyone had been so drunk or distracted that they didn't even notice that you both had been gone for 15 minutes, and that there was a hickey forming on your neck.

hi dear! could you maybe write bucky x short!reader and he teases her for it? just cute fluffy teasing you know ~ if u decide to do it, thank you!
Hi lovely, ty for this request!!🥰 I hope this is okay. Honestly, being a short queen would be great with Bucky🤧, warning: fluff, pet names, (0.6k)
It is no secret, that you are very short. And over the years, you have learnt, that sometimes it can be a problem.
Like it is right now. The light went out in the bedroom, more specifically the light that's hanging from the ceiling. And you don't want to not change it now in case you forget about it and later, when you will need it, have a problem.
Usually you'd have Bucky change the light bulb, but he isn't home yet, so it is up to you to do it. As you examine the height of the ceiling, you know you'll need a chair or two.
So the next thing you know, you are standing on top of a stool, that's on top of a chair. It's definitely not the smartest decision you've ever made, but what can a girl do?
In the middle of your 'mission', Bucky comes home. And when he finds you on that wobbly thing, his heart almost gives out.
"What the hell, sweetheart?" he immediately comes behind you, hand gripping your thighs to steady you.
"Hi, Bucky," you greet him, not really paying attention to his worried voice. And as you go on your tiptoes, the stool with the chair wobble dangerously. It is all it takes for Bucky to lift you up and put you safely on the ground.
"Hey...-," you frown at him, "why'd you do that?"
"You mean saving you from a fall, before you could break your neck?" he rolls his eyes, clearly annoyed by your lack of worry.
"I was changing the light bulb and I almost had it," you scowl at him, "and it is perfectly save, I've tested it out."
"Why didn't you just wait for me, doll?" he groans, he doesn't want to come home to you doing this kind of dangerous stuff.
"Because I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself," you respond, as you try to climb onto the chair again. But you are not even one leg up on it, before Bucky is manhandling you away from it.
"Sweetheart, you are seriously trying to bring me a heart attack right now," he sighs and takes the new light bulb from your hands. It's a quick work and before you know it, the light is working again.
"Here, it's done," he announces with a proud smile.
"Don't be so smug about it, it's not my fault, that the ceiling is so high," you complain.
"It's not high...," he smirks, " you are just too tiny, sweet thing."
"I'm not," you protest, even though you know, you are, " the ceiling is just too damn high."
"Right, you aren't short, that is not the case at all, huh?" He teases you, hands squeezes your hips.
"Nope." You lie, trying to fight back the smile.
"No?," he raises his eyebrows," how come I need to get you everything from the highest shelf in the kitchen? Or how come I need to wipe the dust away on the higher bookshelves? Or how come i need to lift you up every damn year to help you decorate the higher part of the Christmas tree? Or how-"
"- fine Bucky, I give up, i think we both know the point was made," you frown some more at him and try to take a step back from his smart-ass.
"Oh come on, baby. I was just messing with you," he instantly pulls you closer with his hands on your back, "I love that you are short."
"Really? And why is that?"
"Because," he grins at you," I can easily do this." He kisses your forehead, he basically just starts to attack your face with kisses. And it is enough to bring a huge, warm smile to both of your faces.
If being short means, that Bucky will kiss you crazy, you can definitively live with it, and pretty happily, may I add.

Night at the Museum (part of my Christmas list)
Glittering decorations, festive cocktails, a beautiful string quartet. Even though you'd insisted that this did not fall under you job description when Donna practically forced you to plan the staff Christmas party this year, you couldn't help but feel a little proud of how well you had pulled the little soirée together. Now there was just one final step to your plan, the reason you had accepted the task in the first place - talk to Steven.
The gift shop employee had caught your eye from the first conversation; his bright passion, his brilliant mind, his obvious sweetness inside and out. After a couple of months curating a new exhibit for the museum, you had come to the conclusion that as beautiful and kind as the man was, he was clueless when it came to picking up the signals you were clearly sending out, and if you wanted to be more than a colleague, and then more than a friend, you were going to have to take matters into your own hands.
---
"I know I usually hate Christmas but I can't miss the party!" Steven muttered under his breath, trying not to think too much about the fact that he was confiding in a stuffed hippo from his little counter, because he couldn't talk to his goldfish until he got home. "You know exactly why I want to go - for (Y/n)." He sighed, resting his head on his hand and his elbow against the counter with a smile as he watched you walk through the grand foyer, seemingly unaware of his longing stare as he racked his brain for any excuse to go talk to you. As if you felt his eyes on you as you moved, you glanced over to him, giving him a smile and wave as you continued your march to Donna's office, needing her sign off on yet another tedious matter for the party. As he tried to return your wave he forgot he was using his arm for support, lifting it to wave and letting his face fall right onto the counter with a thud. Steven almost didn't want to raise it again in his embarrassment, sure you must think he was an absolute idiot for the way he always managed to make a fool of himself around you, but as he glanced up he was glad he did, the blushing giggle he could see on your cheeks worth the slight knock to his. As soon as you disappeared around a corner, he went back to his goddess-themed plush toy and their conversation, "So now you see why I've got to go to this party! But I keep looking like a numpty every time they come near me, so I've got to make a plan. What do you think I should say?" He paused as if the toy was going to give him an answer, disappointed when his thoughts were the only thing he heard,
"Well I can't just say I love you to a colleague I've never even asked on a date! I'll look insane! No, I need to play it cool."
---
Steven felt decidedly less than cool as he walked into the almost empty museum that night, closed to the public for the staff party, giving him less people than usual to hide behind when it came to the sea of judgemental eyes. He pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind, tugging on his slightly ill-fitting suit and focusing instead on his objective for the evening - talk to you.
You could feel your heart jump a little bit as you heard your name called out over the festive melody filling the air. Steven always said your name like it was filled with excitement and wonder, not like someone he went to work with day after day.
"The museum looks amazing tonight, you did a great job party planning!" He said happily, leaning forward as if he was going to greet you with a hug before doubting himself and settling for a small wave instead.
"Thanks Steven, I'm really glad you came." You replied sincerely, relief that he had actually come tonight boosting your confidence more than a little.
"I never miss a party, me." He lied, frowning as the words came out of his mouth, searching for a new topic before you could follow up on his fib, "I heard your exhibit getting expanded, congratulations! Ancient gemstones right?" he questioned, ignoring the voice in his head suggesting he offer you a diamond then and there.
"Thanks, I can't wait for the new artifacts to arrive, there's jewellery in there dating back to some of the first human civilians." He nodded happily along as you described your plans for the exhibition, thrilled to see you speak with such devotion, proud just to know someone like you, "I always think there's something beautiful about the fact that as long as humans have existed, they've wanted to sparkle." Steven grinned the sentiment, almost captivated by the joy with you approached your work and your life, the happiness that seemed to fill him whenever he got to spend time in your presence.
"Well you certainly do." He offered sweetly, eyes widening in panic as if he hadn't quite realised a compliment was leaving his lips before it was too late. Not wanting to risk sticking around to watch you shoot him down he quickly excused himself, desperately hurrying to a quiet corner to pull himself together. You watched in confusion as he stepped out for some air, mumbling to himself and wringing his hands together as he went, his chest rising and falling intensely as he brought his heart rate back to a safe level, unsure whether to be proud of himself for finally (almost) flirting with you, or kick himself for running away before he could see the fall-out.
You let the party continue to pass, keeping an eye on Steven as he finally plodded back in, reluctantly listening to a rant from Donna and correcting a few people on his name, looking a little bit downtrodden by the end of it,
"Steven. Pst." You beckoned from behind him, leaning against the corner of a long stretch of corridor undisturbed by party goers. He pointed up at himself as if there was anyone else you could be talking to, only taking a few uncertain steps forward when you nodded and used one finger to gesture him towards you. "I wanted to show another Christmas decoration I put up for the party." You explained, the curve of your smile making Steven's heart beat harder against his ribs, grateful and terrified to actually have a moment alone with you. You took a few slow steps backwards as you beckoned Steven towards you, finally coming to a stop and pointing up at the ceiling, hand struggling to hold still with the anticipation.
"Oh." Was all Steven could breath out as he saw the little green branch with its white berries hanging over him - Mistletoe. The first thing you'd dug out when you agreed to plan the party, hiding it far away enough from the foyer that you wouldn't be disturbed. Steven didn't dare move a muscle as you stood toe-to-toe, sure he must have misunderstood, certain you couldn't be thinking what he was thinking.
"You know the tradition for the two people under mistletoe right?" You prompted, the crimson colour spreading across his cheeks as he began to lift his trembling hands enough to make you sure this was something you both wanted.
"To - to kiss." Steven stuttered out, short of breath as you nodded, leaning slightly forward until the tip of your nose brushed softly over his as you did.
"Do you want to kiss me Steven?" You almost whispered, faces barely an inch apart, feeling the heat radiating from him as he nodded, bringing his twitching hands to cup your cheeks as his lips finally closed in on yours. It was soft. Tentative. Like part of Steven still didn't think this could be what you wanted. You brought your hands to his waist, slowly snaking around to pull him closer, encouraging him to apply a little more pressure the kiss. You leant into it, opening your mouth slightly and tilting your head to feel more of his soft, plump lips, slightly wet as his tongue seemed to hover just shy of yours. He let one hand brush over your cheek and fall to your neck, holding the nape of it as if terrified you might disappear if he couldn't feel you, and taste you anymore. You let your tongue lightly brush his, feeling him eagerly respond to your movements by deepening the kiss again, lips moving against yours like he'd never need to take a breath again, surviving solely on the feel of your mouth against his, the perfect fluttering building in his chest.
Finally you pulled away, leaning back just far enough to notice Steven's frantic breathing, the awestruck look in his eye as his gaze danced around your face looking for any sign of rejection before staring back at your lips, the only thing he could picture himself thinking about for a very long time. And then you smiled, and he was sure his heart was going to explode then and there, the affection as you rubbed his lower back and held him close the sweetest thing Steven could ever remember feeling.
"Happy Holidays Steven." Otherwise at a loss for words at what to say to this man looking at you like maybe there should be a museum dedicated to you alone, like you had single handedly hung every star in the sky along with the festive decoration above you.
"You wouldn't be free on New Year's Eve would you?" He asked, attempt at joking betrayed by his utterly pleading tone and the pure elation in his eyes when you nodded. Maybe Steven didn't hate Christmas anymore.

Lumine's Harem (If Aether allows it) - Heizou
Tumblr media
Summary: There is a case of serial robberies that has the detective stumped but luckily, he has the twins to help. But when they manage to find an important clue, how far will they go to help the man solve the mystery? Disclaimer: This chapter contains incest, exhibitionism, public sex, filming/photography (with and without consent), blackmailing.
The new chapter of the series is up on my P&treon! The link is in my bio if you'd like to read it (and many other stories) and support me and my writing <3 here's a sneak peek!
Misaki double checked that the cookies was secure in the box, a smile on her face as she was quite proud of her baking skills. Closing her front door, she quickly started to skip over to her destination: the neighbour’s house. All day she was watching furniture and luggage be brought into the newly bought house and from what she gathered, a married couple had moved in. There was finally a pause in the moving to break for lunch and so she thought it would be nice to go over and say hello with a fresh batch of cookies.
Definitely not for any other reasons. And definitely not for some juicy gossip.
She rang the bell once she was by the front door, having weaved through boxes and furniture that was yet to be placed into the house.
A handsome young man opened the door, his looks taking away Misaki’s breath. With short layered black hair, his eyes a deep blue and a piercing on his left eyebrow, he was easily one of the more handsome men to live in the neighbourhood. But what stunned her the most were his arm tattoos. The sleeves of his Yukata were bunched up a bit, his body a bit sweaty from moving, and it showed off his various tattoos. Misaki could barely make out what was on him but it looked like a mix of different things. From words to art- his arms stunned her, having never met somebody with so many tattoos.
“Hello.” he said, breaking her out of his trance, “May I help you?”
“Oh! Excuse me-” Misaki said cheerfully, a bit embarrassed by her silence, “My name is Misaki. I’m your next-door neighbour! I saw you moving in and thought I'd come by and introduce myself.”
“How thoughtful of you.” the man said with a kind smile, “Just one second.” he turned around towards the house before calling out:
“Sweetheart! Come here for a second.”
A woman’s voice immediately responded: “Coming!”
The two of them waited as the sound of footsteps got closer, the third party quickly joining them. Misaki once again felt her lungs stop working as she came face to face with a beautiful young woman. With chocolate brown hair decorated with small flowers, plump pink lips and wide, adorable green eyes, all complimented by the pink and flowery kimono she was wearing- she looked like a walking angel. Her appearance and demeanour were the complete opposite of the mans and yet, they looked even more attractive next to each other. “This is my wife, Eri and you can call me Nathaniel.” the man introduced as the woman bowed, his hand gently placed on the small of her back, “Sweetie, this is our neighbour, Mrs.Misaki.”
“Oh, hello!” Eri responded, “It’s nice to meet you. Thank you for coming by.”
“Likewise.” Misaki responded, getting a hold of herself as she bowed as well. “Here, I've made you some sweets.” she said, handing over the box to Eri, “I’m quite good at baking if I do say so myself.”
“Thank you so much!” Eri said, gratefully accepting the box, “My husband and I have big sweet tooths. We’ll enjoy this a lot, I'm sure.”
“We don’t have many people in this neighbourhood who aren’t Inazuman locals. Are you perhaps from Mondstad?” Misaki asked, looking at Nathaniel.
“I am.” the man responded with a nod, “I moved to Inazuma once we got married.”
“Oh, how romantic! So, how long have you two been together?”
Eri giggled, gracefully covering her mouth with her sleeve, “I’m sorry, I'm afraid we’re still quite busy with setting up our home. But perhaps, once everything is finished, I can invite you over for some tea and we can get to know each other?”
“Oh? Oh! Yes, of course.” Misaki laughed, a bit embarrassed by her need for some gossip, “I’ll leave you two to it. If you need help with anything, I live right next to you so feel free to call me.”
“We’ll keep that in mind.” Eri smiled with a bow. With another goodbye, she gently closed the door, the sound of the lock latching audible to Misaki’s ears. She stood by their doorway for a second, blinking before she started to giggle.
She couldn’t wait to get to know them better and share all of the gossip!
On the other side of the door, the couple waited until they heard footsteps retreating from their front yard before they let out a sigh of relief, some of the stress leaving their body.
“...Do you think she bought it?” Eri- or rather- Lumine asked, looking over at her ‘husband’.
“I think that was good.” Nathaniel- or rather- Aether responded, giving his sister a nod.
Lumine let out a loud sigh, hand on her chest as she released her breath she didn’t realize she was holding. “It’s been a while since I’ve needed to act like this. I forgot how nerve wracking it is!”
“Don’t get cold feet now. We’re going to have to sell this for a while.” Aether reminded.
“I know, I know.” Lumine said, waving away his concern, “I’ll be alright. Just need to get used to it.”
Her brother gave her back a reassuring pat, “Come on. Let’s continue unpacking.”
“Sure.”

3.53 New digs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sophia gently grasped my hand and led me into my new residence: our home. As I looked around, I couldn't help but smile as I recalled my earlier thoughts about her during dinner: simple and elegant. The naked walls and bare essentials confirmed the theme yet again. Was there room for me in this tiny house? I didn't have much, but how could I live here without disrupting the flow? That was a thought for some other time because she stole my attention as she emerged from the bedroom, dressed for bed, beckoning for me to join her in the dimly lit room. I followed cautiously, minding my desires and not wanting to presume anything. She slipped under the covers, so I spun into my PJs and nestled beside her.
"Hold me," she whispered softly.
I obeyed and refused to let go. How symbolic. The first time we hung out, I refused to hug her because I knew if I ever got her in my arms, I'd never let go. And now, there I was, laying there with her in my arms, promising I'd never let her go again. At that moment, I had everything I needed and fell asleep content and satisfied, experiencing the most restful sleep in a while.
Tumblr media
In the morning, I woke up, and she was gone. I got a chuckle out of thinking about how she escaped the vice grip I had her in while managing not to wake me. That took talent. I checked my messages, hoping to find one from her but not intentionally looking for one. I knew she went to work, but I just loved hearing from her. Sure enough, a message had arrived two hours prior stating she had left for work, would return around 3:00, and that I should make myself at home. Not that I expected anything different, but I loved how eager she was to make me feel welcome. I replied saying I'd go home to get some stuff but would be back before she got home.
Tumblr media
With that out of the way, I surveyed my new home to gauge its vibe and figure out how we can merge our lives in this cramped space. Despite being the most decorated room, the bedroom still fell in line with the minimalist theme. At least it had curtains. The patio door left us exposed, but the massive boulders behind the house shielded us against potential peepers. Anyone who was desperate enough to climb up there to see us deserved a show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She didn't have many clothes, so I could put a few items on the racks. The empty nightstand was a perfect place for toiletries and small personal items. She used the second room as her office. Despite its limited space, it had the best potential to not only put some of my things but to create a space that was ours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd already seen the living/dining/kitchen space, but now I could get a good look at it. The kitchen was perfect. Almost too perfect, as if it never got used. I guess she was right about not cooking much. The idea of cooking for her regularly excited me. I wanted to take care of her without disrupting her autonomy, and that was the perfect way to do it.
After my self-guided tour, I took a shower and was glad to see her bathroom was nicer than the ones at Dad's house. Once I was ready, I headed to San Sequoia to break this crazy news to him. He was watching TV and smirking at me when I walked through the door.
"Another night of fun?" he joked.
Tumblr media
"Yes, but not how you think."
"Ohhh. Well, that sounds promising."
"Uhhh...yeah, maybe..."
His eyes were laser locked on me, blinking rapidly and waiting for clarification.
"Okay, so... This is gonna sound really crazy, and you might be disappointed, but here goes... I kinda agreed to move in with Sophia."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Dad? What do you think?"
"Are you sure about this?"
"Honestly? I don't really know. But what I do know is I've been too afraid to take risks. I feel like I can't grow as a man being afraid of what might happen. Plus, I really really like her."
Tumblr media
Dad grinned from ear to ear.
"I think you more than like her. I'm so proud of you. That's a very big thing you've realized about yourself. It takes maturity to get there. You've always been thoughtful and have good judgement, so if this is something you feel you need to do, I support it. I'm happy for you."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That went waaaaaay better than I imagined. Dad wasn't someone who got upset much, but I imagined him being triggered by his own experience and being dead-set against it.
"So...I guess you're here to get your things, then?" he asked.
"Just the essentials. Her house is super tiny. Like...Copperdale tiny."
"Oh. Yikes. You gonna be alright with that?"
I shrugged.
"I guess we'll see."
"Alright. Well, don't let me keep you."
"Hey, Dad? Thank you...for everything. I don't think I could have made it here without your guidance."
He nodded.
"That's the job, son."
"I know, but... I don't know. You've been, like, really cool about it. You make sharing things really easy. I've enjoyed being here with you. I mean...I knew I needed you when I decided to move in with you, but I didn't know how much. And I... Well, forget it. I don't really know what I'm trying to say, heh."
"Come here," he said and stood. "I love you. You're always welcome here. You and Sophia."
Tumblr media
"Thanks, Dad... Oh, and if you tell Mama about any of this, The Book of Luca will be closed. I know you two still talk about me."
He laughed.
"My lips are sealed."

Popping in to say Hi! 👋
I know it's been a little while since I posted. Had some real life things happening that prevented me from being at my desk. I'm not totally back. Going to make it official and be on semi-hiatus (so nothing's really changing because I think that's what I've been doing lol.) I'll try and answer all my messages over the next week or two now that I have access to my computer.
In Jan/Feb I started planning to remodel the upstairs of the house. Started in my office and my Mother-in-law got progressively sicker with her COPD. We went through bouts of hospital and nursing home stays. In and out about 5 times (could be more, but I honestly lost count). Anyways, she went into hospice 2 weeks ago and passed last week at 85.
So...finished up painting most of the office and put the furniture back in. This is the good side of the room in pictures. lol. Still need to decorate the shelves, my desk and hang some art. (Now I gotta do the other 4 rooms) I did learn how to hang picture molding by myself. Sorta proud of myself. Coco being my little helper. :P
We still have to close up and take care of MIL's house. (That's a task and a half itself) Maybe by the end of summer (after we finish the upstairs remodel) I can get back to playing some Sims. I miss it. There have been such amazing mods and CC come out that I can't wait to try out.
Hope you all are doing fantastic and I'll talk with you guys very soon!

Ice Pop 🍃
Aaaah, Happy Birthday, Danelle! I hope you're having a wonderful day! I honestly didn't think I'd be able to get anything done to celebrate this year with how busy I've been, and I felt terrible, but luckily being at home for the last week has given me some time on a night to whip a little something up. It's not the best, or the most exciting, but hopefully it can somewhat make up for my months of radiosilence, and bring you a little joy today. 🥰
Now, this can pretty much be considered a standalone AU one-shot, but it was supposed to be a section in the third part of ASDO - yes, I know I haven't even finished the second part yet, I'm working on it lol - however, due to changes in timelines and things, it's not going to be able to work like this anymore. Still, I wanted my idea for two certain characters meeting for the first time to have some sort of a home, even if it is no longer canon. And who knows? Maybe it'll help for their appearances in other stories haha. But yeah, if you're wondering about the context of the rehearsal it's centred around - that's what it's for 😂
Anyway, enough of my rambling! I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you have a great day however you end up celebrating! You're the best internet friend a girl could ask for, so you deserve it! Happy birthday, Danelle!! 🥳

"Ugh, she just gets prettier every time I see her."
As rubber sneaker soles met blistering asphalt, Vivien couldn't help but giggle. Swinging the door of the sky blue convertible shut, she turned to face Carrie, affectionately rolling her eyes as she saw where her gaze, and flattery was aimed. Proudly plastered across the side of Sound Stage 4 was a colossal banner advertising the newest season of Find Your Voice, decorated with the gigantic heads of eight of its core cast members. And off to the left hand side, beaming down the camera lens over the top of an advanced geometry textbook, was the very same blonde as the one standing there admiring it.
"And Miles wonders why he can't get Royce to stop calling you vain," Vivien sarcastically teased.
Reluctantly tearing her gaze from the studio's prime position billboard, Carrie settled the younger brunette with a contented smirk. "I don't care; it's true," she said, holding back a giggle of her own as she swung her car door shut. "And besides, a little self-love's healthy."
"A little?" Vivien snorted with a raised eyebrow.
Carrie didn't have a comeback for that one, instead just laughing along with the teenager as she locked up her Mustang and rounded the car to join her. Bidding the oversized version of herself a final goodbye with a proud grin and a mock salute, as a way of thanking her for her contributions to their show's ever-growing ratings, Carrie began leading Vivien out of the studio parking lot.
Jogging a few paces to match the blonde's brisk walking pace, Vivien soon returned to scanning her surroundings like she'd just set foot in Munchkinland after a tornado. By now she had thought she was somewhat familiar with the movie world her extended family lived in, or at least the portion by the beach where they all resided. But exploring the downtown area brought that same giddy novelty of her first visit flooding back to her. It was like the whole city had a filter over it, turning up the saturation of the colours in the brickwork or shop signs, and bringing out their warmth to match the sunrays kissing the freckles up and down her arms.
Once she'd finally regained control of her childlike wonder, and had stopped gawping at the buildings lining the street they were strolling down as though they were exhibits at a science museum, her attention returned to the same question that had been plaguing her since Carrie had ushered her into the passenger seat of her car. "You know, you still haven't actually told me where we're going."
"I'm taking you to the venue."
Despite her nonchalant tone, Carrie's revelation made Vivien's breath catch in her throat. "Already?"
"Well yeah," Carrie replied, seemingly confused by the panicked squeak in the girl's voice. "I thought you'd want to get some practice in first."
Melting into a smile with a relieved sigh, Vivien let her shoulders relax and her feet be guided by the clunky, patterned platform boots parading her down Sycamore Close. Acting as a rather effective tour guide, Carrie gave her a walking tour of her and Miles' weekday stomping ground - she pointed out the mechanic shop where he worked, where their favourite sandwich shop was, which place did the best coffee, which place did the worst coffee - she even pointed out the laundrette Miles almost flooded after an unfortunate lunch-break run-in with a meatball sub, and threw in the anecdote that went along with it for good measure. There was the florist shop, the record store, the pharmacy - the whole street looked like it could have been plucked straight out of a movie set. And, in a way, Vivien supposed it had been. But as they rounded another corner, the pastel awnings and inviting smells disappeared.
It was far from a dump; palm trees still sporadically lined the road, and storefronts held haphazard displays of their products to entice the sparse crowds of customers. But the trashbags sitting at the curbside, and the uneven sidewalk slabs, made this part of town feel a little less polished than the rest. Just as Vivien finished reading the intricate chalkboard sign hanging outside a local bookstore though, and she turned back to follow Carrie's lead, a cloud of smoke obscured her view of the path ahead.
Thankfully, the haze had dispersed by the time the girls approached, but the stench of weed that replaced it made Vivien's nostrils itch. Scrunching up her nose, she slightly quickened her pace, hoping to get to a bakery down the street that could drown out the smell before her eyes started watering. But in the seconds that followed, she didn't know what surprised her more: the fact that Carrie was acknowledged by the stoner responsible for the smoke show, or the fact that she actually stopped to talk to him.
"Heyyyy, Carrie-oke! What the hell are you doing here so early?"
"We're down a drummer, so we need an emergency rehearsal with our stand-in," Carrie replied, a hint of amusement colouring her tone - whether that was due to the circumstances, or the fact that she sensed Vivien's utter confusion was a mystery to the brunette though.
"You lost another one? What happened? She didn't-"
"Yeah, Amber dumped him… Again."
"Fucking hell," the guy snorted, taking a quick drag on his joint and blowing the smoke out of the corner of his mouth, away from the girls, which Vivien appreciated. There was something about his entertained grin that drew her interest - or maybe it was that mischievous twinkle she spotted in his dark, albeit bleary chocolate brown eyes as he lifted his round sunglasses onto the top of his head. Either way, her intrigue towards the young man was making the weed smell more and more tolerable with each passing second. "Two drummers in four months? Is she trying to set a record or something?" he cheekily continued.
"I don't know," Carrie sighed with an eyeroll at her friend's expense. "But she definitely made the right call with that last guy; he was a total deadweight."
"Was that the coupon guy?" he checked. And once Carrie nodded her confirmation: "Oh yeah, he was a fucking moron. She can do so much better."
"Exactly," Carrie replied, throwing her head back with a hearty laugh at the brunet's earnest response. "But, yet again, her commendable level of self-respect has left us without a drummer less than eight hours before doors open. Hence the emergency rehearsal."
The deeply pensive expression, pulling the guy's eyebrows together, had Vivien biting the inside of her cheek to stop herself from giggling, especially when he revealed what he'd been thinking so hard about.
"Hence…" he mumbled, through a mouthful of the BLT sandwich he'd picked up from the plate balancing precariously on the windowsill beside him. "Gnarly adverb... Respect."
Carrie just shook her head with another amused grin. "That stuff's hittin' good this morning, huh?"
"Oh yeah," he chuckled with a contented nod of approval. "You want a hit?"
Whilst the offer itself wasn't too much of a surprise to Vivien, the length of time Carrie appeared to consider it for certainly was. For a moment, she even thought she saw the blonde's arm twitch, as though instinctively moving to accept, before she caught herself and shook her head. "No, I can't-"
"Oh come on, just a little one."
Again, Carrie almost appeared convinced, before her better judgement won out. "No, I- Look, maybe later," she eventually compromised, taking a step towards the propped open, painted brown door beside them to prevent any attempts at further complaints from the stoner. "I already told you, I'm not here to just hang out. We've got to rehearse."
"We? What are you talking about? Who's-?" But as Vivien followed Carrie's lead, inching towards the doorway, she looked up to find that set of bleary brown eyes fixed on her for the first time that conversation - any traces of an end to his question completely falling out of his head the second he spotted her.
Now that she'd actually been acknowledged by the guy, Vivien took the opportunity to fully take in his appearance: fascinated by the fact that such a creature even knew Carrie, let alone spoke to her like a friend. His dark, taupe hair fell in half-hearted curls by his shoulders - more in limp waves than anything, which were pushed away from his face by the arms of the scratched, round sunglasses balanced atop his head. His scrawny frame was hidden by a baggy denim jacket that looked as though it was about four sizes too big for him, with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows, and a shirt beneath patterned so intensely she couldn't look at it for long without seeing spots in her vision. Old, flared, brown trousers; scuffed, but clearly well-loved, maroon boots; and a jumbled collection of leather bracelets, fabric wristbands, and peace sign pendants completed the look - a look she could only think to dub: dishevelled bohemian. If he'd have been on the cover of a history book about the hippie movement she wouldn't have batted an eyelid. And yet here he was, standing right in front of her, looking at her as though she'd just been beamed down from a spaceship.
Apparently her very existence was all it took to stun him into silence; his brain clearly needed all the energy it could get to process what he was seeing. She could practically hear its cogs spinning on overdrive as he searched her face for some recognisable quality. And just when they were starting to sound like her old laptop loading up The Sims, he tore his gaze from her and fixed it back on Carrie.
"…Who the fuck is that?"
The genuine confusion riddling his expression amused Vivien to no end, having to catch herself before a giggle escaped her lips as Carrie, evidently more familiar with his antics, simply replied: "It's Viv."
But the explanation made absolutely no difference in that empty, freckled head. The guy still looked as lost as ever.
"It's Vivien," Carrie tried again. But when she was met with a further, if not slightly more irritated, blank stare, she let out a frustrated scoff and turned so that she was fully facing the airheaded brunet again. "Vivien O'Brian-"
"You say that like you expect me to know who she is," he cut in with an incredulous scoff of his own.
"You do know."
"Then who the fuck is it?"
"Vivien," Carrie fired back with great exasperation - the kind that could only come from years of friendly, pent-up frustration. "She ice skates. She reads books. Miles talks about her like once a fucking week!"
Ethan's eyes lit up like a Roman candle. "Yoooo, where is Miles?" he asked, all inquiries about the brunette forgotten in an instant at the very mention of that all-important name.
But his eager grin was met with a look of disapproving disbelief. "I don't know," Carrie snapped, left floundering for an answer thanks to the stoner's inability to hold a properly structured conversation. "At work, I assume."
He looked about as satisfied with Carrie's answer as she had with his question though, tipping his head up to the sky and letting out a frustrated groan that would have given a sulking six-year-old a run for his money. "You seriously didn't bring him with you?" he checked, quirking an eyebrow at her out of the corner of his vision - clearly hoping this was just some dorky prank set-up.
"No, I don't think he gets off 'til 5," Carrie flatly fired back.
"Ughhhhh." There went that stroppy groan of frustration again. "That's fucking forever away. What am I supposed to do 'til then?"
"You could help us set up for our rehearsal," Carrie suggested with a smirk. "You know, like any respectable entertainment coordinator would."
He just rolled his eyes. "It's gonna be so boring without him though," he whined, scuffing his boot along the sidewalk as he dejectedly kicked a pebble against the side of the building.
Now it was Carrie's turn to roll her eyes as she let out an incredulous scoff. "Need I remind you, we were friends way before Miles came into the picture?"
The stoner levelled her gaze for a beat before a knowing smile tugged his lips into that same mischievous grin from before. "Yeah, but from that point on, nothing else really mattered, did it? Let's be real," he chuckled. Despite the ribbing, and obvious penchant for a certain mechanic, there was a glint in his blood-shot eyes that revealed his fondness for the blonde after all though.
And the feeling was clearly mutual since she was still willing to continue the conversation - she couldn't even successfully stifle her smile back as she shook her head and muttered a quick: "You're such an idiot."
The brunet made no attempt to argue - in fact he let out an amused snort of agreement as he reached for the rest of his half-eaten BLT.
Seizing the opportunity to take control of the conversation again, Carrie attempted to steer it back on track with an exaggerated, "Anyway." Tugging her guest closer, and dramatically gesturing to her, she continued, "That Vivien we talk about all the time: this is her."
The guy nodded thoughtfully. "Vivien…" he mumbled through a mouthful of bread - still playing that oh-so challenging game of connect-the-dots.
"Yes, Vivien," Carrie confirmed, as though encouraging a kindergartener. "She stayed with Miles and his brothers last April."
"Mmm," he nodded, finally showing some evidence of understanding. "She's dating that other mechanic guy - the one Miles lived with for-"
"No," Carrie cut in sharply over Vivien's incredulous laughter. "That's Mick and Butchy."
"Well how the fuck am I supposed to-?"
"Viv's dating Royce," Carrie explained, cutting off his complaint before he could derail the conversation any further.
"She's dating Royce?" he questioned, half-mumbling to himself as he fought through the disbelief the new information carried. His eyebrows scrunched in incredulity, his lips curled into a sort of confused grimace-
But then it finally clicked - the force almost popping his eyes out of his head in the process.
If the sudden change in the stoner's expression hadn't already set Vivien off to laugh harder, the sharp gasp that followed, and sent what remained of his mouthful of sandwich flying into the back of his throat, certainly did.
"Holy shit!" he eventually managed to choke out between the hacking coughs to help dislodge the piece of bread. "That was actually real?" he went on to ask once he'd caught his breath again, staring at Carrie with tear-stained eyes and a look of utter stupefaction. But she just nodded and chuckled as she handed him a bottle of water from her purse. "I thought Miles just made that up so I'd stop thinking his brother was a lame-ass," he continued, pausing to gulp down the offered water and rid himself of any remaining evidence of his mini choking fit. Holding the water bottle out to its original owner with a heavy, contemplative sigh, he levelled her gaze and lowered his voice to ask a dubious: "You're definitely sure it's real then?"
"You do know you can talk to her yourself, right?" Carrie checked, raising her eyebrow as she took back the bottle and gestured to Vivien yet again.
The guy paused, mouth slightly agape, as the realisation steadily dawned on him. Shifting his gaze to the brunette, he instead posed the question to her. "...You're actually dating Miles' brother?"
"I am indeed," she replied, smirking through poorly stifled giggles at the caricature of a guy's reactions.
"And they're definitely not paying you to say this?"
"I wish I was getting paid," Vivien snorted. "Easiest buck I'd ever make."
A thoughtful nod followed, as though impressed by the girl's honesty. And then came another bite of that BLT as he mulled over the revelation a little more. "Well, shit," he eventually settled on, with an amused smirk of his own. "Good for him… And you, I guess," he added, with a vague nod in Vivien's direction.
And then there was silence. It seemed as though he felt his role in the conversation was over now if the way he engrossed himself in inspecting the limp piece of lettuce sticking out the side of his sandwich was anything to go by. But Carrie had other ideas.
"Is that it?"
"Is what it?"
"That's all you have to say?" she raised an eyebrow and pressed.
"Well what else do you want me to do?"
But Carrie's disgruntled eye roll told Vivien she wasn't about to spell it out for him. "You have the social skills of a fucking garden snail," she muttered, before turning to the younger brunette with an almost apologetic shake of her head. "Well, since he's not gonna introduce himself - Viv, this Ethan. I had other, cooler friends I wanted you to meet first but, unfortunately fate had other plans."
Ethan still frowned despite her teasing tone. "I know you don't mean that, Cole," he protested, to which Carrie just smirked and rolled her eyes again.
Vivien felt like she was constantly on the brink of laughter watching the pair interact, caught between genuine amusement and utter disbelief. "So you two are like legitimately friends then?" she asked, feeling the need to check since her brain still didn't feel ready to process what her eyes were telling her.
Matching mischievous grins graced their faces as Ethan nodded and Carrie stifled another chuckle. "Don't look so surprised," she added after clocking the girl's reaction.
"No, I just-" Vivien floundered, struggling to articulate everything her brain was trying to process into a proper sentence. But after several failed attempts, she let her straight-to-the-point inner voice take over talking duties, with a spluttered laugh to join it. "How the hell did it happen?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well I just- I thought I had an idea of what your friends would be like…" Vivien trailed off, again at a loss for words.
"And this isn't it?" Carrie asked with mock-surprise as she jerked her thumb in Ethan's direction, just as he took another hit of his joint.
"...Well, we call you Barbie for a reason," Vivien teased. "I just didn't expect Little Miss Perfect to hang out with…"
"Someone who looks like they crawled out of Fraggle Rock?" Carrie offered with a smirk that quickly set the girl off to laugh.
Luckily, Ethan started laughing along with them - but not for the same reasons. "Yooo, they call you Barbie?"
"That's what you took from that?" Carrie checked in disgruntled disbelief.
"That's so fucking good," he mumbled as another amused grin settled on his lips.
But Carrie just rolled her eyes and turned her attention back to Vivien. "I swear you kids think I'm some sort of saint," she chuckled before teasingly adding, "You're not the only one who can have cool, weird friends, you know?"
"I never said I was," Vivien argued through a laugh. "I just don't know where you two could have ever crossed paths. Where did you guys meet?"
"He works on the sound for Find Your Voice and a couple of other shows on the lot. So I've known him ever since I booked the part," Carrie explained whilst Ethan worked on finishing what was left of his BLT. "He was just another part of the crew at first, but, because I talk to anyone and everyone all the time-"
"'Cause she loves the sound of her own voice," Ethan cut in through a mouthful of bacon, cheekily licking mayo off his thumb.
Carrie silenced him with a withering stare - but his lingering smirk told Vivien that he wasn't phased in the slightest. Still, Carrie was able to finish the rest of her explanation uninterrupted. "-I started to talk to him between takes, you know, since he was always there with the boom mic. And then one thing led to another, and before I knew it, he was sacking off lunch with the other tech guys to come and raid my dressing room for cookies."
"Oh come on," Ethan frowned at the light ribbing. "Don't pretend you wouldn't do the same for your mom's snickerdoodles."
"You ate crumbs out of a trash can."
"And I'd do it again," Ethan shot back with an earnestness that just made his and Carrie's sibling-like bickering even more entertaining. "You can't talk anyway; you ate that piece of pizza Miles spat out into a napkin the other week."
Ethan's accusatory frown, paired with Vivien's grimace just made Carrie's attempts at a justification even harder to come by. "Listen, I was not…" she began, eyes darting to the brunette on her left as she tried to phrase this in a way that wouldn't tarnish her reputation any further. "...of sound mind that evening. Plus, he's my boyfriend - I've tasted worse than saliva."
As if the first part of the confession hadn't shocked her enough, Vivien jerked her head back in reaction to that last line. "Eww, Carrie!"
Ethan's loud bark of laughter was a completely different response though. "Hey, I never said there was anything wrong with it," he eventually chuckled. "I'd have probably eaten it if you didn't."
"And I bet you'd have loved it too, you freak," Carrie fired back with a smirk despite her nose wrinkling in disgust.
Ethan's proud grin was all the evidence she needed to know she was right.
Once Vivien had recovered from her future sister-in-law's nausea-inducing revelation, she was able to continue with her inquiries about the scruffy stoner she'd become so fascinated with. "Wait so you know Miles too?"
"Know him?!" Ethan squawked.
His reaction sent Carrie's eyes to the heavens as she tipped her head back in despair. "Don't get him started, Viv," she wearily warned.
But Ethan didn't even give the brunette the chance to question any further, seizing the opportunity to talk about the mechanic with both hands, and a lovestruck smile. "Miles is my soulmate; my cosmic chaperone - we're spiritually bound by the very threads of our existence."
The edges of Vivien's smirk twitched, dying to let the guffaws it was holding back free as she raised an eyebrow. "That close, huh?"
Ethan gave the girl a solemn nod. "He's the ketchup to my mustard."
"Well shit," Vivien deadpanned, matching the guy's energy perfectly. "You can't get closer than that."
Shaking her head at the pair, and the situation in general, Carrie went on to explain: "The second I brought Miles on set it was game over. He asked Ethan some dumb question about a song on the radio and he's been following him around like a bad smell ever since."
Both physically and metaphorically.
"It was Money by the Rolling Stones, and we still say it's our song to this day, thank you very much," Ethan cagily retorted, as protective as ever over his friendship with Miles, before adding a slightly more in character: "That guitar line is gnarly."
"'Our song'?" Vivien questioned with a snort. "Are you guys gonna use it for your wedding or something?"
But the teasing remark bounced off Ethan like a rubber bullet as he mulled over the proposal with a mellow grin. "I could dig it."
Again Carrie just fondly shook her head, at both Ethan's response and Vivien's reaction. "Believe me, Viv," she went on to say. "They'd need no encouragement. I mean, you'll see it for yourself later, but they're inseparable when you get them together. Like, think of the biggest bromance you know, then times it by four…and you might be getting close."
"They're really that close?" Vivien chuckled in disbelief.
Carrie nodded intently. "They're like fucking limpets."
"I can't believe Miles has been hiding the fact he's got a best friend from me for all these years," Vivien said with cheeky incredulity. "I'm never letting him live this down. I didn't think losers like him were capable of having best friends."
"Well believe it, because he's not going anywhere," Carrie snorted. "Believe me; I've tried."
"Protest all you want, 'oke. You and I both know you'd be lost without me," Ethan said, slinging his now free arm around Carrie's shoulder and pulling her towards him, before affectionately squidging her cheeks together in a way that immediately had her trying to squirm out of his grip.
"I'd have one hell of a mopey boyfriend, that's for sure," Carrie compromised with an affectionate roll of her eyes as she finally somewhat relaxed into the awkward embrace. "And a pretty boring social life."
"Exactly!" Ethan said, that same mischievous grin from earlier making its fateful return. "Who else would you have to go and play midnight mini golf with? And who'd you get to play ice tag with you on set?"
"Isn't it called 'freeze' tag?" Vivien teasingly questioned. "And why are you adults playing freeze tag at work?"
"Uh, we're 22, we're not dinosaurs," Carrie retorted. "And it's not 'freeze tag', it's 'ice tag': a Carrie and Ethan original."
"Well if it's not freeze tag then what is it?" Vivien laughed.
"Duuude, it's so fun!" Ethan enthused. "You've gotta sneak to one of the craft services ice buckets, grab a couple cubes, then pick your victims. If you get one down the back of their shirt - or pants - without them noticing 'til it's already down there, and without it melting, you get a point - and they then have to be the next one to go get the ice."
"The camera guys hate it," Carrie laughed. "But it makes long filming days so much more fun. We've got like half the cast and crew playing now."
"Yeah, the scoreboard in her dressing room's insane," Ethan added.
"So you've built an entire friendship around a game about ice cubes?" Vivien questioned with an amused quirk of her eyebrow.
"Pfft, no, we hang out all the time!" Ethan said.
"Yeah, believe it or not, Miles and I do voluntarily hang out with him when we're not running around after you guys," Carrie chuckled.
"To do what?" Vivien snorted.
"All sorts. We've had a few good movie nights lately 'cause we found out Ethan's got like the weirdest taste in movies ever; he's seen shit like 'Attack of the Crab Monsters', but not The Wizard of Oz."
"Well I have now, but it was fucking weird, man," came Ethan's review. "The scarecrow guy's face looked like it was melting off." Directing his next point at Vivien in particular, he departed his first bout of wisdom on her. "Not one to watch high, dudette, trust me."
"Noted," Vivien acknowledged.
"So yeah, we've had a couple of rogue movie nights if Ethan's been in charge of securing the projector reels," Carrie continued. "But other than that it's just like general, everyday stuff. At least for us, anyway. We don't really get much chance to properly plan stuff out - it kind of just happens. Like the other day, after work, Amber started trying to teach us all how to do one of her crazy yoga routines - we'd never have suggested that until we did it, but it was some of the most fun I've had in weeks."
"Yooo, I was so fucking good at it. I might get her to show me some more stuff next week; I really felt like I was tapping into something powerful with it."
"Oh it was powerful alright," Carrie acknowledged with a giggle. "Miles couldn't believe it - I haven't seen him laugh that hard since he watched you take 20 minutes to make that packet ramen."
"Look, I just have other skill sets to most people," Ethan retorted with a resigned sigh. But a fleeting memory soon had his confidence racing back. "You've gotta admit I was a key player in helping you wreck Eric's car though."
Vivien's jaw dropped to her purple sneakers. "I'm sorry, you did what now?"
The guilt was written all over Carrie's pretty little face. Knowing she had no leg to stand on if she attempted to deny it, thanks to Ethan's unending honesty, she caved with a sigh. "Ok, yeah, so we may have totaled Eric's sports car-"
"Fuck, it was so fun!" Ethan exclaimed. "Me, Amber, and Carrie went to town on that thing. And Julie-"
"Anyway," Carried quickly cut in, trying to change the topic of conversation.
But the disbelief glittering in Vivien's emerald eyes wasn't about to let her get off the hook so easily. "Oh no, I'm not going anywhere until I hear this story," she grinned eagerly.
Letting out a defeated huff, Carrie compromised. "Alright, fine, I'll tell you later. But not a word of it gets back to Miles, ok? Because he has no idea we were the ones responsible for that - and we need to keep it that way."
"Oh come on, why can't I hear it now?" Vivien asked, sticking Carrie with her classic puppy dog eyes for extra, black-mail-y effect.
But unlike her other half, Carrie wasn't so easily won over by the pleading. "Because we need to go practice," she fired back. "We've wasted enough time talking to this bozo already."
"It's not been a waste," Ethan indignantly replied. "I've had a great time."
"So have I," Vivien agreed with a chuckle.
"And I'm very pleased for you both, but that doesn't change the fact that we need to rehearse. So hurry up and unlock the function room for us, tech boy," Carrie bossily snapped back despite her affectionate eye roll.
"You see how she speaks to me?" Ethan snarkily muttered to Vivien as though behind the blonde's back.
"I thought he was the sound guy for your TV show, what does that have to do with us rehearsing here?" Vivien asked, scanning the outside of the building for some sort of clue as to what the place even was.
"He is, but he's also the entertainment co-ordinator here, which means he's in charge of all the live music equipment, and the emcee for the night," Carrie explained as he stamped out the end of his joint with the toe of his boot. "So we're stuck with him all day, I'm afraid."
"I'm also your number one competition, so you'd better be fucking good," he retorted with another mischievous grin. "'Cause you've yet to beat us once."
"You've got a band too?" Vivien asked.
"Yeah - me, Miles, Donny, Rizzo and Desky. Don't let Carrie brainwash you about her bogus trio though, 'cause she can talk all she wants, but she knows she only put it together 'cause she was jealous of ours."
"You're so full of shit," Carrie retorted.
"Oh yeah? Then how come you've lost the crowd favourite vote to us every single time?" he cockily shot back. And when, for once, she didn't have a snapback at the ready: "That's what I thought. Fucking. Poser."
"Brag all you want, but we're gonna make you eat those words tonight now that we've got Viv on our side," Carrie coolly replied, sparing the brunette a smug smile.
"Oh shit, yeah," Ethan said, his competitiveness vanishing once he remembered the reason for his new friend's visit. "You're filling in as their drummer, right?"
"Yeah," Vivien confirmed, trying to hide the fact that her stomach did a backflip at the very thought. "At least that's the plan."
"Gnarly," he acknowledged with an impressed nod. "Where'd you learn to play?"
"My brother Riven taught me back when we were kids."
"Nice, you ever done any shows before or-?"
"Hello? What part of, 'we need to go practice', do you not understand?" Carrie cut in with a pointed glare in the stoner's direction.
"Uh, we're having a conversation here," Ethan countered, totally oblivious to her frustration.
"We actually have a band of our own with two of our friends that we've played a couple of shows for, yeah," Vivien carried on with a giggle at Carrie's expense.
"Oh really? No way!" Ethan exclaimed, seeming genuinely excited by the prospect.
"Yeah, and we write all our own songs."
"Seriously? That's so-"
"Guys!" Carrie tried again - one more stall away from stamping her platform go-go boot on the ground and throwing a toddler-style fit. "Come onnnn."
But yet again, Ethan wasn't bothered in the slightest by her rising irritation. In fact, he was rather irritated himself by her impatience. "Carrie - can't you see I'm talking to my new friend here? She has great knowledge to bestow, and I have much to learn - so quit interrupting; we're having bonding time. You're being rude."
"You can't pull the 'friend' card on me with Viv; she's like my little sister-" Carrie tried, but her indignant protests were drowned out by more of Ethan's senseless rambles.
"So, we'll circle back to the band thing later; I need to do some mental collage-work first, 'cause your canvas is feelin' a little blank, dudette," he began, leaning back against the brick wall and closing his eyes, as though to better visualise the 'memory version' of the brunette before him. Pressing a couple of fingers to his forehead, in an attempt to strengthen their cerebral connection, he continued, "We'll lay down some basics first. Quick-fire: name, birthday, last bone you broke."
Vivien had to bite back a laugh before responding: "Vivien O'Brian, August 22nd, and it was my wrist when I was 10."
Ethan's eyes peeled open, shining with intrigue. "No way, you've actually broken a bone?"
"Why are you so surprised? You asked," Vivien chuckled.
"'Cause most of these losers I ask don't do anything exciting enough to risk bodily harm," he snorted back, with a smug glance in Carrie's direction, relishing the steam that was practically rising from the top of her head. "How'd you break it then?"
"My skating partner dropped me," Vivien said, luckily able to look back on the memory with a more optimistic view than the other participant.
"'Skating partner'?" Ethan mused.
"Yeah, we're figure skaters - my friend Riven and I; the one who taught me to how to play the drums," she explained, catching on quickly that the more context clues she offered, the sooner they'd get to the point.
"What, like roller skating?"
"No, ice skating," Vivien clarified with a giggle.
Ethan's eyes glazed over in understanding. "Ohhh, right. Like ice hockey."
"No, not like ice hockey," Carrie cut in with an exasperated sigh, trying to break it down as simply as she could. "Figure skating. It's like ice dancing. Think the winter olympics - lots of twirling - little dresses-"
"Ohhh, no way! You do all those crazy jumps and shit?" Ethan exclaimed - finally catching on.
"Yeah," Vivien acknowledged. "At least three times a week, usually."
"At the olympics?" he asked, genuine amazement coating every word.
"No, we're not at olympic level," she chuckled, deciding to forgo the explanation that the olympics, at most, happen 3 times a decade. "Not yet, anyway. Our coach is working us towards it though, so who knows? Maybe one day."
"Holy fuck, we're talking to a future olympian, Carrie," Ethan enthused, bumping the blonde's arm in an attempt to share the excitement with her. But when she just rolled her eyes, yet failed to hold back her smile, he continued. "Do you do other competitions and stuff though? Or do you just like practising and doing it for fun?"
"No, we compete. I've got like a whole shelf of trophies in my room," Vivien said, poorly stifling a laugh as Ethan's eyes grew wider still. "We're the reigning national champs for our age bracket."
"Woahhhh, far out, man," he breathed. "That's awesome!" Thumping Carrie's arm again, this time a touch harder to coincide with his growing excitement, he gave her another aside, "Yo, Carrie, we're talking to like a legit celebrity here."
Vivien didn't know what she ended up laughing harder at, Ethan's genuine awe at her achievements, or Carrie's deadpan look of resignation. Those blue eyes of hers looked like they could have melted steel.
Snorting out a laugh of his own at the blonde's expression, he turned back to Vivien with a smirk. "That never gets old," he grinned, evidently well-versed in teasing Carrie about her level of fame. "Anyway, enough about her; she gets more than enough attention. What other cool, hidden talents are you hiding under those glasses?"
"I don't know, I don't think anything else really counts as a talent," Vivien downplayed. "I've taken a few archery lessons, I like going and exploring abandoned buildings-"
"Woah, woah, woah, 'abandoned buildings'?" Ethan questioned - bloodshot eyes once again sparking to life. "What the hell? You're so cool. She's so cool," he said, turning to see if Carrie was sharing in his bewilderment too. "How the fuck did you end up dating Miles' lame-ass little brother? No offence, but like-"
"Ethan," Carrie scolded.
"No, come on, not in like a mean way; he sounds great - I'd protect him with my life - but like, all I ever hear from Miles is that he fucking reads nerdy library books," he attempted to justify.
"Well I like reading too, you know," Vivien countered with a teasing smirk.
"Yeah, but you still seem to have a life," Ethan retorted, with all the social graces of an ox. The hearty laugh Vivien let out in response soon had him back to grinning like an idiot though. "Yo, why's Miles kept us apart for so long? You're awesome - we've got such a good energy going here," he chuckled.
"Yeah, why has Miles kept us apart?" Vivien agreed, looking to Carrie for some sort of explanation.
Begrudgingly rejoining the conversation, she explained with a teasing smirk at the stoner's expense. "Because you're a terrible influence - I speak from experience. He's gonna kill me when he finds out I've introduced you two without his supervision." But then she turned her attention to the younger brunette. "And because the second you see them both together, his cover as the somewhat responsible adult looking after you kids is gonna be blown out the water."
"Oh come on, how bad can he be?" Vivien laughed.
"It's not bad, necessarily - it's just that when they're together, and you're not around, all responsibilities go out the window, and the 22 years of pent-up stupidity are unleashed," Carrie explained with a laugh of her own.
Grinning mischievously, Vivien said, "In that case, I can't wait for his shift to end."
"Yeah, which is gonna be soon if we don't hurry up and get our asses inside," Carrie said, shooting Ethan with another pointed look.
"Huh? D'you hear something, Viv?" Ethan asked his new protege, intentionally blanking the steadily seething blonde.
"Ethan, come onnnn, please," Carrie pleaded, bouncing on the balls of her feet like an impatient child. "You can continue this while we're setting up."
"Weather's pretty nice this morning, huh? Not too humid, not-"
"Fine, I'll just have to kick the door down," Carrie resigned, hiding her smirk behind his back. "I hope no one's left their guitar lying around where it could get damaged if-"
Whirling around with a look of pure horror, Ethan muttered a sombre, almost warning, "Don't even joke about that; you know she's my baby."
"You play the guitar?" Vivien questioned.
"'Play's putting it lightly; I think I can noddle away on that thing better than I can talk," Ethan snorted.
"Like that's hard," Carrie teasingly retorted before continuing. "As much stick as I've given him this morning, he is really good on that guitar," she went on to acknowledge with a genuine smile. "Riven, Miles, and Butchy can talk all they want, but they're not a patch on this guy - I think if he wasn't so mentally stunted he'd be considered some sort of prodigy or something."
"You know, you can just give me a genuine compliment," he said, frowning slightly at her friendly jab.
"I know… I'll start when you start," she retorted with a smirk he soon reciprocated, before shaking his head and letting out another snort of laughter.
"Ok, we'll stick with this; we've got a nice thing going here, why ruin it?"
Grinning at the pair of old friends, and the way Carrie squeezed him into a hug from the side, Vivien's ever-active brain started formulating a new idea - one that would hopefully get her in the good books of both cartoon-cliches come-to-life. "Well, if you're this good on the guitar I've obviously gotta hear it for myself," she prompted, drawing the brunet's attention back to her.
"Shoot, of course, I'd love to play something with you - you know any-?" Ethan began to gush, shoving Carrie away from his side in favour of chattering away to the brunette again.
"Don't we need to get into the function room first though?" she asked, sparing a quick glance at a suddenly very excited Carrie.
"Oh shit, yeah. You shoulda just said, Viv. I'll go unlock it for us," Ethan chuckled as though the concept was entirely new - sending Carrie's eyes to the heavens again.
But the blonde's groan of frustration was drowned out by Vivien's optimistic giggle, as she teasingly mumbled under her breath, "See? That wasn't so hard."
"You two are really gonna make me regret introducing you both, huh?" she said with a weary chuckle of her own as Ethan disappeared into the building.
"On the contrary; I think we're gonna have more fun than ever," Vivien laughed back. "I need to see more of this 'wild' side he brings out of you. First I find out you're bi. Now I find out you smoke weed and could go down for criminal damages to your ex's car with that…thing. I feel like I barely even knew you before."
Carrie just chuckled to herself at the teenager's amazement. "I did try to tell you I was more than just Miles' girlfriend."
"What else are you hiding now? Surely there can't be more," Vivien demanded. "Are you gonna introduce me to your secret three-year-old or something?"
"Eww, no," she laughed. "Just be patient, you'll find out when you're ready," she smirked with a confident mystique Vivien could only have dreamed of. "I've gotta keep at least some of the mystery alive."
Before Vivien could press the older girl for any further clues though, a bedraggled head of shoulder-length brown hair appeared in the dark doorway. "Come on, Ice Pop. It's all unlocked."
Vivien looked from Ethan to Carrie and back again, perplexed. "Ice Pop?"
"Yeah, Ice Pop," Ethan simply confirmed, with a dopey grin.
"Nicknames are kind of his thing," Carrie explained, her voice barely above a whisper as she leaned in to inform the brunette. "It's just how his little pea-brain works. And once he's settled on one for you, you're kind of stuck with it - unfortunately," she added, thinking back to the months of convincing it took to get him to stop calling her 'Coleslaw'.
"Why 'Ice Pop'?" Vivien questioned - as amused, and fascinated, by the guy's thought process as ever.
"'Cause you ice skate," he explained as though it was obvious. "And you're wearing purple - you've actually just got like a purple vibe."
"What does purple have to do with ice pops though?" she asked.
"Well the purple ones are my favourite, and you're my favourite ice skater, so…" he replied, miming the fusion of ideas with his hands for added effect. "Ice Pop."
Poorly holding back her flattered, yet still slightly amused grin, Vivien tried to protest. "You've never even seen me skate."
"Minor details," he dismissed with a wave of his hand. "You're the only one I know by name though - so, you don't have a lot of competition. But that still makes you my favourite."
All the skating talk was lost on Carrie, but there was something about the conversation that caught her attention: "The purple one's are your favourite? They taste like ass."
"Probably why they're my favourite," he snorted as Carrie just wrinkled her nose. Not wanting to delay the imminent jam session any longer, he quickly turned back to Vivien though, managing to catch her attention between her hearty laughs. "What do you say then? You like it?"
"Yeah, I like it," she grinned, warmth spreading throughout her chest as she watched the stoner's eyes glow with appreciation.
"Sweet," he breathed, holding her gaze for a beat before beckoning her towards the wooden archway in the brickwork. "Come on then, Ice Pop. Welcome to The Grapefruit."
Following a nod of approval from Carrie, who promptly trailed behind her, Vivien let Ethan lead her through a bead curtain and into a dimly lit, oak-panelled hallway. The floor almost immediately dropped into a stairwell, lined with black and white photos of musicians, and prints of various fruits in the same assorted shades of orange, yellow, and green from the beads at the entrance.
As they descended, Vivien, as talkative as ever, especially now that she was more at ease around the guy, decided to start probing Ethan for more details. "So if I'm Ice Pop, and Carrie's Carrie-oke - does Miles have a nickname?"
"Nah, you can't improve upon perfection," Ethan sighed, grabbing the railings of the staircase and launching himself down the last four steps. "I do have a 'government name' I call him though when he needs me to talk some sense into him," he continued after landing with a thud in front of a two-way corridor.
"Which is?" Vivien prompted as they turned to the left and reached another door.
"Miles per Gallon, Miles per Hour, Miles from Anywhere - there's a couple variations," he replied as he pulled a bunch of keys from his back pocket and started working on the lock. "Just depends on my mood."
"Oh my god, I can't wait for him to get here," Vivien giggled. She didn't know what she was laughing harder at: Ethan's nicknames for her honorary big brother, or what she imagined his face would look like when he realised she now knew about them.
"Well, in the meantime, make yourself comfy. 'Cause it sounds like you're gonna be here a while," Ethan chuckled as he pushed the door open and stepped aside to let her enter first. "Behold: your performance space for the evening."
As Vivien stepped into the room, that same surreal feeling she got the first time she set foot in the Wet Side Story world flooded through her - it felt like a dream, like everything would disappear in a puff of smoke if she touched it. But as her sneakers met scuffed, wooden floorboards, she stayed very much in one piece - as did everything else around her. The wood-panelled walls continued into what she now understood was an underground bar - but, despite the lack of sunlight, it was far from dingy. The overhead lights bathed everything in a soft, golden light, which complimented the room's colour scheme perfectly. The same shades of rust orange, mustard yellow, and olive green from the beaded curtain at the entrance clung to the upholstery and decorations - and yet brighter pops of colour, in line with the bar's citrussy namesake, made the whole room come to life. The earthy tones, mismatched furniture and clashing patterns made it feel so quintessentially 60s, but that just made Vivien love it even more - even if it did smell vaguely like stale beer.
"Hold up, how old is she? D'you think I'm allowed to have let her in here if she's not 21?" Ethan asked Carrie as the pair followed Vivien into the function room.
"It's not like you're gonna serve her any alcohol, she's just here to perform," Carrie said, brushing off his concern with ease. "And besides, if she wants anything she can just sneak some of mine," she added with a mischievous grin the stoner quickly shared.
"Yeah, what am I even saying? Since when did I start giving a shit about following the rules?" he snorted, pocketing his keys and crashing onto the nearest, faded leather couch.
"Alright then, Viv," Carrie continued, stepping up behind the teenager, who was still gazing around the room in wonder. And yet it wasn't until the blonde put her hands on her shoulders and steered her towards the centre of the room that she even noticed the sprawling stage - complete with mic stands, a dusty piano, several guitar amps and that all-important drum-kit. "You ready to take her for a spin?"
Vivien's first instinct told her 'absolutely not', but there was something about the warmth in Carrie's hopeful smile, and Ethan's earnest encouragements, still fresh in her mind, that gave her pause. Maybe she could do this after all; they certainly seemed to think she could. And she wasn't going to get over this stage fright without trying, so she might as well give it a go with a supportive audience - a rather unconventional, supportive audience; but one that, given her newfound fondness of the pair, and their apparent abundance of love for her in return, one that she wouldn't have traded for anything.
