hi there! i recently finished final fantasy xvi (16), and i'd love to write in the universe! i'd prefer to write in a canon-divergent au of some sort.
anyway! a few things about me you may find handy to know:
18+ f!writer with many years of rp experience; only looking for 18+ partners.
i don't shy away from dark or nsfw topics; not necessarily looking for nsfw/smut heavy threads by any means, but i can tell you right now i probably won't mesh well with someone who has to fade to black :c sorry.
i'll write over email, in gdocs, or via a discord server. i can't say i have much of a preference for any over the others; i'm also down for ooc over discord and the actual writing thread elsewhere.
given how recently the game came out and i finished it, i've not written for this fandom before. i certainly don't mind taking any constructive criticism if you think i've misrepresented/misconstrued a canon character.
i'm comfortable with canon/canon pairs and canon/oc ones of any genders/dynamics/orientations (m//, m/f, f//, trans + nb inclusive). if we can agree on a canon/canon pair, then i'm happy to leave it at that. if you'd like to go the canon/oc route, though, i do require us to double; like most everyone who's ever dabbled in fandom rp i won't be stuck writing the canon for the original without a little reciprocity.
i like long posts. how long is long, you ask? i like to stay at least around 3 paragraphs, though i can -- and do -- write more than that. all in all, i'm a mirror poster who enjoys fleshing out details and delving into characters' thoughts/feelings/motivations. my sweet spot is 4-6 paragraphs, but i'm more than willing to write novella/generally longer posts if you're game!
i don't do rapid-fire or one-liners or short, measly little single paragraphs. they make me sad and tend to indicate my partner's lack of interest or effort. that said, if your motivation is running dry and you need/want to stop, that's completely fine! honestly, if you ghost i won't chase after you, though i'll admit to a slight preference that you give me a chance to try and fix things up?
at the very least one post a week; i'd prefer around 3 a week, personally, but ofc irl stuff happens.
everything has to be in third person; absolutely no first or second. i default to past tense, but i'm perfectly fine with present if that's your preference!
beware spoilers below if you haven't finished the game!
so! i'm honestly not super sure about pairs, but i'm more than happy to talk them through with you? i have off the top of my head, i know i'd be interested in things like:
dion/joshua (it doesn't have to be in the terms of dion's perceived debt to joshua, but there's just such a nice familiarity there, especially after twinside and dion's drowning in guilt; maybe even bringing in memories of them meeting when they were younger)
hugo/benedikta (my favorite amoral duo who both just need to fuck off from dhalmekia and waloed and do whatever tf they want; also, hugo turning benedikta away from barnabas? his actual affection for her takes her by surprise; this dude doesn't actually just want to exploit and use her for his own ends? say whatttttt?)
dion/barnabas (i'm a terrible person; it's fine! :c but the whole dark v light theme? waloed v sanbreque? barnabas' whole crusade to kidnap bearers/dominants?)
benedikta/jill (mayhaps cid comes too late to save jill and benedikta absconds with her from the battlefield? i think they'd be able to relate to one another relatively well tbh, and plus i'd love to see jill a little more assertive/proactive)
cid/benedikta (purely platonic; i'd love to explore that dynamic, flesh out their background more; tbh, it'd probably be set in the background of an actual pair)
cid/barnabas (iā€™d loooooove the opportunity to explore their dynamic before cid up and left waloed; maybe cid even confided in barnabas at one point until barnabasā€™ loyalty to ultima comes out and cid feels betrayed? add benedikta into the mix and ooof. lots of drama potential, i think.)
clive/barnabas (especially in the context of clive having just lost to barnabas in a fight? won't master ultima be so pleased with you, mr warden of darkness? but then... wait. why won't you hand over mythos? clive somehow turning barnabas around? you love to see it)
clive/dion (bc, letā€™s be real. i feel a little cheated that they didnā€™t interact more after dion was taken to the hideaway. iā€™d love the opportunity to flesh it out better, especially since joshua cares so much and clive would be curious about that. maybe we could even bring in the harpocrates quest for the wyvern tail flower?)
*** Incest *** clive/joshua (shhhhhh. clive literally saying they've become one is just so darn platonic i can't even com pre hennnnnnd. i'd argue clive shows more emotion over joshua than anyone else in the game, and i'd be remiss in not exploring that further)
please note i have zero interest in writing clive/jill :c they're more of a brotp for me. sorry! i'd at least be willing to hear out other canon/canon pairs, but please don't be offended if i don't want to write them :c
one of the main plots iā€™d love to explore is all the dominants convening together? preferably in an ultima context but potentially something else? iā€™m absolutely open to other plots (even plots that more or less follow the game with tweaks and alternate bits and/or original characters thrown in), and iā€™ve got more in the wings you can definitely ask about!
i'd also be incredibly down for some canon/oc shenanigans, and ofc i'd happily double! gonna be super basic and ask for my partner to write clive for me tho; could absolutely be down for poly (cough with cid cough) but that's not necessary at all. also, ngl, i'd love to write a leviathan oc (for whom i already have a great deal of ideas...) i know, i know, the medicine girl is who everyone kinda suspects to be leviathan but, shhhhhhh ;o au for a reason, yeah? it's not confirmed anyway.
i hope i've managed to pique some interest, and if i have, please like this post! I will reach out! šŸ”„

(reread anon) One of the things that bugged me the most was Tolya, unfortunately. In the books he's so quiet and serious and devoted and in the show he's this comic relief and I did not vibe with that at all. And then that they took plot points from all the five books and mashed them into one season. That Nikolai already is infected but that it was a Volcra and not punishment from the darkling. That Alina didn't lose her powers and that Inej's Story and trauma was not explored or explained enough. wesper, I didn't like how "smol" they made wylan, it made me a bit icky and how they didn't make him smart or clever in the show. I could go on but you've already mentioned most of the things already haha
noooo you're so, so right about tolya. like what did they do to his character?!?!? i am almost done with my siege & storm reread and there is barely any overlap between book!tolya and show!tolya. in the books, he's such a sternly calm yet imposing presence and he's very devoted to alina & his faith. in the show, he's just kind of there, trying to recite poetry and swinging his katana? idk it's very weird for sure ((also, the thing they did with him and inej???? HUH???)). ((and don't even get me started on tamar and the tamadia neglect lmaooo. so bad.)). godddd, they really randomly picked plot points for this season, didn't they? it truly feels more like a disjointed highlight real than a coherent story. and then the scenes don't even hit because they lack necessary emotional build-up and characterisation because there is no proper narrative set-up šŸ˜šŸ˜ in this fictional universe, it simply doesn't work to take storylines out of context and mess with the timeline like this. ((yes, i am still VERY bitter about the pekka rollins stuff............)). you're right, my boys, nikolai and wylan, suffered so much as well. their characterisations ranged from reductive to one-dimensional to kind of okay to feeble to downright stupid. nikolai is more layered then the show even tried to show. i know the writers said they are were not interested in exploring the nikolai merzost infection in any physical way, but i personally think that's such a missed opportunity. the entire thing of transforming into a monster and dealing with that and how that trauma affects your psyche and your self-perception is SO INTERESTING. it's also a great metaphor in an of itself, later on as a physical reminder of the pszchological trauma as well. and ofc the whole king of scars thing is just kind of šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø now. and as you mentioned, having a nichevo'ya (?) infect him is just..... less powerful then it being retribution from the darkling. it kind of takes from both their storylines and developments. alina not losing her powers (and sun summoning powers not emerging in the other people) was SUCH a disappointment. literally did not want This Kind of "girlbossification" of alina, but here we are. making her a shadow summoner was...a Choice for sure. this entire last episode was a Choice. and not a particular sensible one. ngl the inej thing is probably one of the things that makes me angriest. they have such an interesting and well-rounded character to work with and instead of exploring inej as a (main) character in her own right they choose to make her a supporting act in the kaz-brekker-show. it's just so frustrating. and yeah, wesper were quite a let-down. i get what you mean about the dynamic feeling weird. it's just not really wesper to me, you know. and, like i mentioned earlier, wylan's characterisation is so ??????? i don't understand why they even went this "smolification" route. he's a cunning little bitch and instead of leaning into that they chose to take it and throw it out the window??? another writing decision in this show i simply do not understand. like, WHY DID THEY FEEL THE NEED TO DO THAT???!! TBH WHY DID THEY FEEL THE NEED TO DO ANY THEY DID???!?! even now that i have had time to sit with the season for a bit, i am still baffled by so many choices. most of the changes they made were either boring or weird or just unnecessary, and quite frankly, make me angrier the more i think about them. their narrative decisions literally only took from the story while adding nothing of value.

Ask Answers: May 15th Part 2
And hereā€™s the next part of the long answer set of the day!
When will OL: N&F take place? Beginnings and Always took place during summer breaks, will now and forever take place during a fall break or will the characters be going to school at the time of the events we play through?Ā
It takes place over all of the fall season, so school will be happening in OL2. Some events do take place in school, though many times events only start after school is already out for the day, haha.
Hey!! I have kind of a weird question?? Iā€™m sorry if itā€™s been answered before and I just havenā€™t seen it but is OL 2 taking place during the same years as OL 1? Iā€™m just curious, thank you for such amazing games!!!ļæ¼Ā
Itā€™s a similar time frame, but not 100% exactly same.
Do you have any idea when the demo for now and forever will be available?Ā
Hopefully this fall! But thatā€™s not a guarantee.
Okay the crime show in Step 2: Growing up. Long blonde hair, police station, crime series? Was it The Closer? Because Iā€™m the same age as MC and Cove and my mom was constantly watching that when I was 13. šŸ˜‚Ā
Haha, yeah! The Closer and, to a lesser degree, Medium were the kind of shows I was referencing there. My mom also used to watch those back in the day.
Hey um this might be an odd question but if the setting of OL: N&F is Ā fall/autumn, what country or city will it take because my mind tells me it is either Poland or Canada. Also I can't wait for the game I am hypedĀ
Itā€™s set in the USA again. Weā€™d like to be able to have cameos and thatā€™s easiest to do if the OL games take place in the same country.
Is it possible for the PC of OL to have non-seriously dated other people in the in between years even if theyā€™ve had a consistent crush on Cove?Ā
You can causally date Baxter in Step 3 if you get his DLC and then ultimately choose Cove in Step 4. If you mean off-screen people, it doesnā€™t really come up, but you can certainly headcanon that. The game never says Cove is the only partner youā€™ve ever had.
Is there going to be a Kickstarter for Now and Forever as well? For like voiced names and stuff again? Didnā€™t find B&A until after it was released and Iā€™d really love the opportunity to hear my name in the game šŸ„ŗĀ
Yeah, we are gonna have a Kickstarter with getting a voiced name as a reward! Though, it will be more expensive than it was for OL1. I feel bad to raise the price but we realized too late the first time around that it was being super undersold for the amount of work it took, aha.
Do you know how much the remaining DLC for OL will cost? (Step 4, Derek, Baxter)Ā
Step 4: Free
Wedding DLC: $2.99USD
Derek DLC: $4.99USD
Ā Baxter DLC: $4.99USD
Has an artist for the new position been picked yet?! I'm super excited for the new game!Ā
We did fill that spot. Thank you so much for taking the time to apply!
hmmm what would it take to get each of the XOXO jerk squad to feel the need to hug you?Ā
Theyā€™d have to first like you a fair amount, otherwise the most youā€™d get is maybe a pat on the shoulder. If they were attached, they might hug you if you broke down crying or if you gave them super good news.
Unless itā€™s Shiloh, of course. If you want a hug you only have to ask!
May i ask how the Derek DLC will work? I believe that there arenā€™t any memories in step 4 and doesnt derekā€™s dlc take place during that step? So will the dlc add memories? Thank you!Ā
Derekā€™s DLC will add five Moments to Step 2 (a new page will appear on that screen if you get the DLC). Then in Step 4 youā€™ll have to choose between playing the default epilogue or going through the Derek romance story.
Is the pc version on itch,io different from the steam version? Like an offline one or something?Ā
Steam has achievements, but thatā€™s about it. Both can be played offline, if you prefer.
I've been wondering this for awhile, what determines if cove winds up with a ponytail in step 3? I've done multiple runs with different MCs with varying hairstyles. Or does it have to do with a particular moment in step 2?Ā
Iā€™m afraid I canā€™t say exact choices that determine things. But generally itā€™s preference based options in the Step before that decide those things.
Any Floret Bond updates?Ā
No, the artist had to leave the project and itā€™s been on-hold. Iā€™m not sure if I want to try working just with what we have or replacing it all entirely. The design is a bit too specific for us to easily find someone who could mimic it. Hopefully weā€™ll work things out later, though.
In step 3 is Cove's plan always to stay in sunset bird?Ā
Yeah. He is never ready at 18-years-old to make a big life change.
I love your content! If it's alright to ask, you answered in a previous ask about how Jeremy was too particular with what he likes his types to be romanceable with just any MC and it's sort of got me wondering.. What /are/ his types and/or preferences and such? Sorry if it's a lot!Ā
Jeremy likes stubborn jerks and will not date someone whoā€™s sweet or even generally a decent person, haha.
uh, excuse me if you said this somewhere before, but how will step 4 be actually? Will it he like an actual step and have moments and dlc and all? Or will it be more like a long epilogue of some sort?
Will the step 4, the wedding and extra routes dlcs be paid too? Im just confused, sorry if im asking too much
Step 4 is only an epilogue, so itā€™s just a long series of scenes one after the other rather than a collection of Moments you can choose from.
The Step 4 epilogue is free, the wedding DLC, Derek DLC, and Baxter DLC cost money.
iā€™m not sure how much of the wedding dlc you have planned already, or if this would be to spoilery, but what kind of wedding traditions will be included? i keep thinking about how flustered cove would get over a garter toss & was wondering if weā€™d see a scene like that haha. obviously no worries if itā€™s not included, iā€™ll enjoy literally anything cove relatedĀ
I donā€™t know for sure yet, haha. Right now weā€™re focused on the parts before the big day. Weā€™ll see how many scene alterations we can include for the wedding itself later on.
Hello! Firstly, thank you for creating such an amazing game like OL, and I couldnā€™t be more excited for OL2! Out of curiosity, are you looking for any writers to come on for OL2 or are you all pretty much set in that department? Just thought Iā€™d shoot my shot haha but Iā€™m still excited regardless ^^!Ā
We will be hiring writers for OL2 later this year! Thank you for the interest.
Will we be blessed with a spin-off Yandere Cove, like XOXO Blood Droplets?Ā
Sadly, no. Itā€™s a shame but thereā€™s not enough time to keep making OL1 bonus/spin-off content.
How is Q pronounced?
Iā€™m afraid Qā€™s full name hasnā€™t been publicly announced yet so I canā€™t answer here (Q and T are the first letters of the names for the new LIs in Our Life: Now & Forever).
Question; is the steam version getting a Mac update? Ā I purchased the dlc there thinking it had Mac support without realizing it and just wondered if Iā€™d need to refund it to purchase on itch.io šŸ˜Ā
Iā€™m really sorry, you will need to get a refund from Steam. We do hope to have it there for Steam eventually, but have no idea of when itā€™ll happen. Apple requires special notarization to be an officially accepted app for their devices. We donā€™t have that. Steam requires having that, Itch will let you release it as an non-notarized third party app. Thatā€™s why Itch is the only place that has the Mac version right now.
would you mind posting outfit sheets for Cove in every step? it would make things a lot easier for us artists. it would save a lot of time spent looking for referencesĀ
I think we did do the earlier steps when they were finished way back in 2019 (this game took a long time to make, aha), but we can probably repost them sometime!
In our life n&f, will we be able to get into qprs/will there be more options in regards to having deep platonic relationships with the love interests? Because as an aroace individual, it would be great if there could also be emphasis on platonic love so that it's more aspec inclusive.Ā
Itā€™s a little hard to say at this point. There may not be things like a wedding DLC for OL2 and so the relationship for platonic and romantic feelings might not go as far as it did in the first game. Weā€™ll kind of have to see how much we can do based on timeframe/budget constraints that will only be set near the end of the year. But we will be keeping things like that in mind at least.
hi! i really really like your game and im absolutely in love with it! i cant wait to try your other games like xoxo droplet and future OL NF :))
during the step 3 erands moment i got curious, which fudge flavor is his favorite? it seems like he likes all of them, but which 4 do you think he would like best?
also i noticed that in some playthroughs cove would let me give him a piggy back ride, and in some he wouldn't, how come?
how does your choices affect cove's interests or looks? i replayed the game without changing any choices but i got cove to look different, is it just random?
thank you!
Coveā€™s favorite flavors are ones with nuts and that are fruity! But he appreciates them all. Whether or not you can give him a piggyback ride depends on if your MC is fit/large enough to hold a muscular 6-foot-tall beach boy, haha.
Coveā€™s appearance does depend on choices and itā€™s generally tied to choices that are preference based rather than emotion/action based, such as which key chain you pick in Step 1.
Is it possible for cove to reject MC's proposal at the end of step 3?Ā
Nope. Heā€™ll always accept.
hi! i was wondering how heavily the side characters will be featured in the our life wedding dlc? obviously it'll be cove & mc focused, but i was thinking it'd be sweet if we could take lizzie dress / suit shopping or dance with cliff at the wedding or something.Ā
The side characters are there about as often as they are in normal events. So, itā€™s clearly focused on Cove but heā€™s not the only person you have any meaningful moments with.
When will responses be sent out to applicants?Ā
Iā€™m afraid we donā€™t send responses out to all applications, only ones weā€™re interested in offering the position to. Not everyone likes rejection emails and the amount of applications is too high to contact them all to say weā€™re not hiring them. We post updates on the job page when a position has news. Right now weā€™ve filled every role that was open.
Is there also going to be the option to keep your relationships with the love interests platonic in Our Life: Now and Forever? That's something I really appreciate in Our Life: Beginnings and Always
Yeah! OL will never force you to end up in a romantic relationship with someone.
I was wondering, in the Step 3 Happiness moment, what are the different fishes Cove can compare MC to? I got "you'd be a paradise fish, because being with you is paradise," but my friend got "you'd be an angelfish." Are there more variations?Ā
He says paradise fish if youā€™re a couple, angelfish if heā€™s just crushing, and then a royal dottyback/queenfish/emperor tetra (based on your gender) if he likes the MC platonicly.
Hello! So, in one of the Step 3 DLCs, Cove's arm was gone. I think it was to show him putting his arm behind his back. But if that wasn't the case, did it get yeeted?Ā
Thanks for letting us know. That was an error we tried to fix a little while back. When did you make the save file you were playing? If it was older that might be why it happened. Or maybe the error wasnā€™t fully fixed after all.
Asking for your opinion, but do you think Cove would at all be into ABBA? Because all I could imagine during the car trip in step 3 was him and the MC belting to Mamma Mia.Ā
Haha, yeah, thereā€™d definitely be some ABBA songs he was into.
So throughout the game, Cove can develop different interests depending on the playerā€™s choices; does this mean that he can have different careers in Step 4? Or his is line of work in adulthood never mentioned at all?Ā
He can have different career paths in Step 4!
Hi!! I'm so so sorry if this has been asked before but I just acquired knowledge about the so famous nsfw dlc for OL and nearly chocked on my bubblegum šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€ So, my real inquiry is if that specific moment will have any kind of impact at some point of the fourth step OR if it will just be treated as a side-story-ish ā€œwhat ifā€ scenario. Also, is there any chance there'll be something similar for Step 4? Haha jk,,, unless šŸ˜³Questions apart let me thank you profoundly for making the best visual novel I've ever played šŸ˜ Really really looking forward the epilogue and OL2 šŸ’• Have a nice dayĀ
Itā€™s just a bonus side story thatā€™s fully separate from the main game.
It would be nice to have one for Step 4 too, but I sadly donā€™t see us having time to actually do it. I donā€™t know, if people are still asking for more OL1 content several months from now it might be doable and worth doing.
I'd just like to ask, when is Baxter's birthday :0 -- I'm really curious esp with their zodiac signs so ;w;Ā
I donā€™t know, haha. Maybe Iā€™ll come up with one someday.
Please help!! I bought the Step 3 DLC but I still have no idea how to get to where you can propose to Cove - any tips?Ā
&
How do I get the option to propose to Cove at the end of the game?
You can click HERE for a discussion on that.
I love that Miranda and Terry are getting together! I'm curious if you have canon sexualities for them? Also just wanted to say how much I love OL and how much joy it brings me everytime I play it <3Ā
Terry likes ladies and Miranda likes dudes!
ngl Step 4 Terry's design reads like y'all see trans guys as their assigned gender more than you see them as men to me (a trans guy)... like maybe if he isn't heavily dysphoric, I could see it, but everything you've said about him doesn't line up with that. Even then, immediate warning bells go off in my head looking at him. I wouldn't have touched the game if I saw him ahead of time.
Iā€™m sorry you arenā€™t comfortable with the way the design looks. The situation with Terry is that heā€™s now open about who he is, but the body he was born with is still physically the same. He only came out recently as an adult and hasnā€™t gone through any treatments/procedures yet (his chest is flatter because he wears a binder). However, even though his body hasnā€™t transitioned at the point Step 4 happens, no one treats him as anything other than the guy he is. Having a trans character whoā€™s identity is supported/respected from the start is what weā€™re going for in this case. But what weā€™re doing with Terry isnā€™t the only trans content weā€™ve ever had/ever will have in the future.
how would baxter react to bae pyoun and vice versa? and can you please detailly explain both love interests personalities from our life 2: now and forever? i was just curious, sorry for dumb question!!Ā
I imagine itā€™d be pretty opposite experiences, haha. Bae would initially think Baxter is pushy and thoughtless, but would quickly realize, oh, heā€™s instead a soft, considerate boy. Very cute. Baxter would first be struck with the impression that Bae is charming and gentlemanly, but then would realize that, no, heā€™s a sarcastic asshole. And Iā€™m afraid we canā€™t reveal the personalities for the next game yet.
Sorry if you've already answered this, but I have a question about the patreon exclusive moment you're working on. I was wondering if it's mainly going to be CGs or if it's mostly character sprites + backgrounds with some CGs.
Either way, thank you for doing the Lord's work and not only making Cove, but making this bonus moment as well šŸ˜ŒšŸ˜ŒšŸ˜Œ
Itā€™s mostly sprites/backgrounds with two CGs!

the general cop out of TFATWS
Saw this fantastic thread pop up today but since this post would be talking about everything else apart from Bucky, I thought I'd start another post.
TFATWS brings up very complex issues and some very dark themes. Unlike Black Widow which by and large does it well, TFATWS does not give these issues the complexity they deserve. It wants to be a political show, but it shirks away from actually giving those issues the gravity and depth they deserve.
1) Racial injustice
My particular issue with the racial injustice theme is that the MCU does not actually align with the real world. I mean half the world has just come out of non-existence, that messes up the social psyche in major ways - so this is not the same as the post-Floyd US we know in the real world. Especially to people living outside the US, we're going to need a little more than a bank and a police scene to show us exactly how racial injustice pervades the MCU America to the point that Sam/Sarah denounces the country multiple times, particularly as it had never been established as an issue before this series (again, only lightly touched on in Black Panther). It is also a missed opportunity to actually educate people outside of the US why racial injustice in the US is a problem that needs the world community's support. Go hard and go deep. Make it without a doubt that Sam could've gotten a loan if he was white - just need a passing comment that someone else in the same situation easily got a loan. Make it clear that in the MCU world, there are also unjust deaths in custody which preferentially affects BIPOC, and this problem has become bigger because the lack of resources has driven up petty crime. Talk about BIPOC being passed over for opportunities, which are going to be massively limited in the post-Blip world. Talk about how people can't get jobs, can't go to college, can't go to school because the colour of their skin pushes them down the list of priorities. Which brings me to...
2) Post-Blip mess
This is criminally glossed over in the series, with a lot of handwaving lines about "the GRC" and "things were better before the Blip". Again, show/tell us the horrors. There won't be enough food and water. There won't be enough housing or accommodation. Don't show us refugees living in clean European mansions. Show us overcrowded, poorly constructed, unhygienic refugee camps (see below picture from Syria). The world's population doubled overnight with no increase in infrastructure. You're going to have a LOT of displaced people literally on the streets. Crime will soar, deaths and illness will soar, and overall dissent will soar.
Tumblr media
3) Resource allocation
Even in a world that hasn't had to deal with half the population disappearing then returning within a short time frame, we are having issues with vaccine inequity. Here's a recent JAMA article about this very issue:
Approximately 1.2% of the global vaccine supply has been received by low-income countries and just 14% by lower-middle-income countries, which account for nearly 40% of the worldā€™s population. In contrast, more than half the US adult population is fully vaccinated (...)
Vaccine inequity is driven by insufficient supply and unfair allocation. Powerful high-income countries prepurchased sufficient doses for their entire populations, sometimes twice the number needed. In contrast, COVAX, a global initiative to procure and equitably allocate vaccines, failed to secure enough doses even for its modest goal of covering 20% of lower-income country populations this year. Pfizer, for example, agreed to sell COVAX only 40 million doses, and had delivered just over 1 million by mid-May.
Now extrapolate this across all resources, including food, fuel, medicines, materials, manufacturing machinery etc. For example, recently parts of northern Chinese cities went dark for days in the middle of a freezing winter because the power grid didn't have enough coal to run. This is going to be made so much worse when the population had suddenly doubled. Greedy corporations will want to capitalise on the sudden surge in demand. Large numbers of people will be dying from all of these reasons, and if the GRC is driving the inequity by unfair allocation of resources, people are within their rights to protest or push for change.
4) Police/Government corruption
It's a fine line that separates a terrorist from a revolutionary, and TFATWS shied away from portraying the gritty reality that would have made Karli a real heroine in this post-apocalyptic world. This is a particularly missed opportunity because Karli's story isn't even set in America, and even as someone who doesn't keep up much with world news I know there are ongoing issues of military/government driven brutality going on throughout the world, which would be many times worse post-Blip because the population will become more expendable.
For anyone interested, here's China's forcing sterilisation/contraception in Uighurs. Here's Myanmar military shooting young people posting Tiktoks of pro-democracy songs. Here's China (again) arresting staff at a pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong and driving it into closure.
Get into the dark side. Tell us how the GRC is colluding with corrupt governments. Tell us about the slavery that has shot through the roof because human labour is now so cheap. Tell us how governments are banning their own people from having children because of overcrowding concerns, and how the GRC plays into that propaganda. Tell us how corrupt powers try to censor these issues from getting to the media, and how the GRC's musclemen (like Walker) are unknowingly or intentionally used to silence people who are trying to fight for their right to live.
5) "I believe we can do better"
Maybe because I'm more a doer than a talker, but I'm still trying to recover from the cringe caused by that speech. Again, I don't blame Sam for either this speech or his talk with Bucky in episode 5, I can only lay the blame at the writers who clearly weren't interested in any of the practical ramifications of what they're writing.
Firstly, establish what they were doing wrong (see above, and there's lots more that could be added with just a cursive research into world affairs). Second, "The only power I have is that I believe we can do better" is a terribly avoidant reply when someone is pointing out rightfully that the issues are complex. This is a time when people want solutions, not just nebulous ideas. I mean, who doesn't want things to be "better"?? But you haven't established the why or what and now you're just handwaving about the how.
Point out what they're doing wrong. Talk about equity in resource and opportunity allocation. Tell them how their policies are driving crime and death and corruption in lower income countries. Offer to be on the Council as a representative for the layperson. Sure, committees might not seem very superhero-like, but other heroes have sat in on international meetings with politicians with success - Nat, Tony, T'Challa to name a few.
I know it's easy to use the excuse that "they tried to pack too much so they can't address all this" and I agree to an extent. But by taking the handwaving cop-out route with these heavy issues, it undermined several scenes that should have held more emotional weight.

Part 3 of P5R review: Akechi
Next up, my favourite part: Akechi! Also mostly likely the last part since I donā€™t think I missed anything else. Feel free to hit me up though if youā€™re wondering about anything I havenā€™t mentioned
Akechi was undoubtedly, and still is, persona 5ā€™s most hotly debated character. From what Iā€™ve been seeing people who even loathed Akechi are starting to become fans of him, or at least donā€™t hate him anymore. Royal expands on his character in a way that fans of his love because it confirmed so many of their suspicions of what heā€™s really like but also just adds more depth to him. I could even understand why people who played vanilla only saw him as ā€˜boy takes things too far cos daddy issuesā€™ cos, well, without deeper analysis that is what atlus was presenting. There was a lot more to his character in vanilla but I donā€™t blame people not looking into him because what they saw on the surface didnā€™t interest them enough... though that being said the abuse and torment given to his fans was super uncalled for.
Letā€™s start with his confidant and take it from there- itā€™s special, itā€™s fun, itā€™s emotional and itā€™s so layered I could watch it a million times and Iā€™d probably still miss something from it. Itā€™s special because itā€™s the only confidant where Ren just gets to hang out with someone, with nothing expected in return. All Akechi wants is a conversation and to play billiards with him. All of the other confidants want your help in something, want you to solve their issues without any regard for what they could do for you in return. Of course when Renā€™s in jail they help him out then but itā€™s only when heā€™s facing the worst-case scenario. Interestingly enough, Akechi goes to jail for Ren at the first opportunity he gets and in that world none of your confidants ever return the favour of Ren changing their lives. To nail this point further, his confidant does have some requirements for social stats, but itā€™s the only instance where itā€™s made clear that itā€™s for Renā€™s own comfort, not for someone elseā€™s. Akechi says he needs someone charming and knowledgeable because heā€™s genuinely concerned for the abuse Ren might get if his fans didnā€™t consider him worthy of their idolā€™s presence.
Itā€™s unexpectedly fun too, youā€™d think that an Akechi confidant would be just about rivalry or him talking to you about his Tragic Backstory but you get quite a few moments which are justā€¦ fun. The first one has them playing billiards and uncovering that heā€™s ambidextrous, and while it is a set up for their rivalry itā€™s still just them playing billiards like regular teenagers would. Thereā€™s the cafĆ© date where silliness ensues and funnily enough you end up finding out more about Ren in that interaction than you do Akechi; about how Ren too hides from the public and has his own mask (glasses) that help him cover up who he really is.
But of course, itā€™s also emotional, like the bathhouse scene where you finally get to know more about Akechiā€™s past thatā€™s not just a random info dump, thereā€™s him clearly crying for help in the final billiards rank where he talks about the game as if it were his own life and even asks you if youā€™d help him (even though he doesnā€™t let you help regardless of what you say).
Term 3 Akechiā€¦ well heā€™s everything I hoped he would be. Sarcastic, sardonic and all around Done With This Shit. He never holds back anymore, both on the battlefield and real life and he doesnā€™t care what the Thieves or anyone else thinks of him anymore. Heā€™s done with the detective mask and the charade and can finally be himself for once, and I absolutely love it. Heā€™s gone from a character I can only theorise about being rude in my writing to one whoā€™s everything I hoped for and so much more.
Now to the shuake stuff: Oh my god its so gay.Ā
Yes a lot of it is regular friendship stuff but also if you canā€™t be friends with your boyfriend then thatā€™s just casual sex, not a relationship. And Iā€™m not talking about the bathhouse scene. Actually, whatā€™s interesting is what happens after which is when Akechi specifically says that no ones ever seen that part of him, Renā€™s the only person who heā€™s been able to open up to like that. Thereā€™s the jazz club, which you find out later is a special place for Akechi to the point that the owner says heā€™s never brought anyone else there. Ren is clearly special in Akechiā€™s eyes, heā€™s the one person he can be around and be his true self.
You even see it in term 3 when heā€™s sarcastic and sardonic around Ren but still continues to put up a faƧade around human Morgana, Futaba, Sojiro Wakaba and later Kasumi, at least until they see him for who he really is inside the palace and heā€™s forced to show his true self. The writers make that so obvious that Akechiā€™s face visibly changes when heā€™s talking to Ren and when heā€™s talking to everyone else.
And Akechi is equally special to Ren. Ren doesnā€™t wish for his criminal record to disappear or to be a Phantom Thief again, he wishes to keep the promise he made to Akechi even with the knowledge that the other was going to kill him. Weā€™ve seen him mourn Akechiā€™s death in p5a proof of justice- the OVA that was so clearly meant to set up royal considering how many similarities it had with that more so than the original game. For a silent protagonist and a self-insert Ren shows more feelings towards Akechi than he does any other character.Ā
Even down to their showtime, everyone else has these elaborate plans that they have to explain to each other then to Ren and hope that the wishing star will make their wish come true and yet Akechi and Ren are just able to improvise it completely on the spot, staying completely in sync. Interestingly enough if you compare it to Jokerā€™s only other one- Sumireā€™s, sheā€™s leading him into the showtime, sheā€™s the one who has to have him follow her, but with Akechi, heā€™s equal, theyā€™re in sync, all it takes is Ren shouting ā€˜Crow!ā€™ for him to jump at the enemy without further instruction. Just as their showtime says, theyā€™re two sides of the same coin.
Thereā€™s a reason that somehow, despite never having spoken about Akechi to him, Maruki knows thatā€™s what Renā€™s biggest wish would be, he knows that itā€™s the only way he might be able to stop Ren and the Thieves from infiltrating the palace, and in one alternative, the dream ending, it is enough for him to dangle Akechiā€™s life in front of him for Ren to fold. He insists Akechiā€™s life isnā€™t just something small that he can sacrifice once again.
Our Light is even further proof of it, itā€™s a love song, not to Kasumi, or not from her, it could clearly not be more obvious thatā€™s itā€™s from Ren to Akechi. The song describes missing someone whoā€™s gone in such a romantic way that seeing it as Sumire to Kasumi is borderline incestuous, and seeing it as Ren to Sumire or vice versa makes no sense either since theyā€™re just a train ride away and even speak about seeing each other soon. Itā€™s unlikely to be about anyone else either since yeah, Ren can just go and visit them any time and for that to be the ending song of a remake where the only character whoā€™s made more important than he was previously is Akechi. It wouldnā€™t make sense for the song to be about that one girl out of 10 that you can romance but doesnā€™t really change the plot as significantly as he does.
In this way, P5R does a great job of showing, not telling. There are frequent comparisons of Maruki and Rumiā€™s situation to Renā€™s and Akechiā€™s (not direct ones but itā€™s obvious the two are similar) and if they were a het couple that romance would be unquestionable. At the end of the day, persona is and always will be a game about choice where the protagonist is mostly a self-insert which is why theyā€™ve never been able to outright say ā€˜this is the canon romance routeā€™ but honestly, if it were to be anyone, itā€™s so painfully clear itā€™s Akechi.
Especially when you remember the directorā€™s words of this being a love triangle. We know Sumire has a crush on Ren but doesnā€™t seem to have an interest in Akechi and outside of being a possible conversation partner, Akechi clearly isnā€™t interested in Sumire. So then if theyā€™re a love triangle the only logical conclusion is that theyā€™re both vying for Renā€™s affection. From Renā€™s perspective, the player can choose if he will romance Sumire but regardless of what Ren says to Sumire, he always ends up having Akechiā€™s life dangled before his eyes and can always choose to have him by his side.

It's pretty much a given that Dr. Brenner will be returning. Do you think he's in the states still trying to track down El? I always suspected that he may have ran away to Russia so he could continue his experiments and research (maybe that's how the Russians knew about the Upside Down). I've been trying to avoid any BTS photos that could provide any major spoilers so there could be news I missed.
From the way that you contextualized your question, I believe you might prefer to avoid spoilers and any Stranger Things 4 leaks or rumors.
I am going to offer you two answers: one which is in the first part of this blogpost, and one which you can choose to read at your own risk which is below the ā€œread moreā€ divider and that takes into account my current thoughts on a few leaked photos and rumors.
I donā€™t believe that Dr. Brenner or the Lab was necessarily trying to track down El throughout seasons 2 and 3. Even though the Lab assured Nancy and Jonathan that the people who ā€œmade mistakesā€ in the past are gone (presumably they are referring to Dr. Brenner) the Lab and Dr. Owens seem to have a few different mysterious arrangements with Hopper. What these arrangements might entail have been implied but never openly stated. We do see Owens giving Hopper a birth certificate for Jane and telling him to ā€œgive it a year.ā€ We see Hopper getting into cars and having shadowy interactions with people that we can only assume are affiliated with the Lab. But now that Hopper is gone and presumed dead (as of the end of season 3) is it possible that the mysterious arrangement that Hopper had with the Lab and/or with Dr. Owens would be nullified and that El would become the target of the Labā€™s interest again? Itā€™s quite possible. And perhaps Dr. Brenner, if he is alive and still doing experiments and research, might return and look to find El again.
Iā€™d like to discuss a second hypothetical reason why I expect we could see Dr. Brenner in season 4, too:
In my opinion Elā€™s conversation with Kali in season 2 foreshadows the return of Dr. Brenner, or perhaps it foreshadows the return of someone who might represent Dr. Brenner in some way.
"Now you're faced with the same choice, Jane: go back into hiding, and hope they don't find you. Or fight, and face him again."
"Face who?"
ā€œThe man who calls himself our father.ā€
Dr. Brenner was conspicuously missing from seasons 2 and 3, but we are led to believe that we havenā€™t seen the last of him yet. (Dead? Not dead? MIA?)
I theorize that Dr. Brenner will make a return appearance in season 4 because I have been waiting for the writers to reveal the secrets behind El and Willā€™s shared mysterious connection to each other that is implied to involve (among other things) the Lab and Dr. Brenner.
I believe that El now living with Joyce, Will, and Jonathan sets up the opportunity for this intersection of Elā€™s and Willā€™s storylines to finally be explored and revealed to us.
I have considered a few very hypothetical ideas regarding what we might see in season 4 based on a few alleged Stranger Things 4 rumors and leaks. Keep in mind I treat all leaks as inconclusive information that is highly unreliable, and I try to avoid making many theories based on rumors and leaks. But! I cannot stop my brain from thinking about the information and ideas being passed around the fandom, and I do have a few ideas and hypotheticals that Iā€™m happy to share with you.
Potential spoiler alert! For the rest of this blogpost I will be talking about a few rumors and alleged photo leaks that have been discussed by fans online over the last few months which influence my thoughts and ideas:
There were photographs leaked of alleged Stranger Things 4 filming in front of a movie theater that listed movies from 1982 such as The Dark Crystal. (1982? Yes! 1982.) This would mean that we might get flashbacks or scenes set before the events of 1983 when Will went missing and El escaped from the Lab.
Tumblr media
If we will be seeing events that took place prior to season 1: it is very possible that we could see Dr. Brenner again in flashbacks that are relevant to either El or Willā€™s history with Dr. Brenner and the Lab.
Could we see Dr. Brenner in the present-day? Maybe, maybe not. El told Kali ā€œPapa is dead.ā€ But perhaps he either A) isnā€™t actually dead B) will still be a relevant character from Elā€™s past within the story and we will get to see her or other characters interacting with Dr. Brenner in the past.
I believe that season 4 is going to focus heavily in addressing the mysterious connection between El and Will and I also suspect that Dr. Brenner is involved in that in some way.
To refer to the alleged leaked photograph of the movie theater again: the theater name suggests that it is located inĀ ā€œLincoln Square.ā€ There is a Lincoln Square in New York City and there is also a Lincoln Square in Chicago. We have characters who have connections to both Chicago and New York City in the series, and so itā€™s hard to determine the precise location of this movie theater. Regardless: we can say with greater confidence that, assuming these leaked photos were of filming for season 4, that this scene they were filming might take place in 1982 and show us events from charactersā€™ pasts. Iā€™ve considered the possibility that since Kali and El pursued a Lab employee (presumably living in or near Chicago in season 2) that it is possible that the Lab might have offices in that city as well as Hawkins. This is one reason I lean towards the possibility of seeing scenes set in Chicago at some point either in season 4 or season 5. (But who knows?)
In season 2 Will expresses his dislike for doctors and tells Joyce ā€œNo doctors. You promised!ā€ and Hopper also asks Joyce, while sheā€™s stressing over what to do about Will, whether she wants to ā€œtake him back to Chicago.ā€ One can assume from the context of that conversation that Hopper is referring to medical treatment that Will had in the past.
Could Will have been a former patient of Dr. Brenner or another division of the Lab prior to his appointments with Dr. Owens?
I think itā€™s quite likely.
Iā€™m not convinced that Dr. Brenner is who we think he is, however. I think thereā€™s more to Dr. Brennerā€™s role in the story than we officially know (yet.)
To return to El and Kaliā€™s conversation again:
"Now you're faced with the same choice, Jane: go back into hiding, and hope they don't find you. Or fight, and face him again."
"Face who?"
ā€œThe man who calls himself our father.ā€
If, as I suspect, Stranger Things is about a DID System and Will and El are both part of it: I have been wondering for a while whether the reason Dr. Brenner has all the Numbers refer to him as their father is because he is in fact actually their father in a more literal sense than simply being the mad scientist raising them to learn to control their powers.
If El is indeed an alter in a DID System, then perhaps ā€œPapaā€ is actually an NPC or persecutor alter in the DID System based on whoever ā€œreal dadā€ is. Maybe Elā€™s memories of being isolated and abused at the lab is a trauma memory that she experienced as an alter, and Kali is another alter who had similar traumatic experiences.
Maybe when we meet ā€œDr. Brennerā€ again he wonā€™t be who he was before, but embodied by a different character who is chillingly familiar to El.
As I mentioned in this recent answer to another Ask: I am curious how El might react if she ever met Lonnie and whether she would recognize him as someone she knows or not.
I realize that my thoughts about Brenner might be a little bit hard to follow: this is because I donā€™t have any clear-cut expectations for when and how we will see Dr. Brenner again. What I described above is purely speculative and I wouldnā€™t even consider it a theory. Itā€™s simply a few ideas. :) Iā€™m a lot more comfortable analyzing what we already know about the series and finding hidden connections within the episodes and content that we already have available. When it comes to speculating about super-specific future plot-points I see it as a less exact science and (for me, at least) it can easily become fanfiction. I might have an opinion on the general trajectory of certain character relationships based on foreshadowing that we have been given, but the specific way that they will manifest themselves in the story is beyond what I can say.
Thank you so much for your Ask! Dr. Brenner is a fascinating character and thereā€™s so much that we still donā€™t know about him. Discussing hypotheticals about Brenner always interests me even though I donā€™t feel especially confident in any one possible route the story might take and I relegate most of my thoughts about him to the ā€œmaybe?ā€ section. But I do think weā€™ll see him again.

Pokemon Journeys Episode 46. Letā€™s review:
1. The little Pokemon World introduction done at the beginning of the episode by Professor Cerise was a nice little callback to the movies! Plus... TAPU KOKO!!! I know it was only a Mew Transformation, but PLEASE writers, let Ash see his second Alola father soon!
2. Oh, hi, Chloe! Nice to see you again! Now hereā€™s to hoping the writers will give her more screen time starting with this episode so that her character and personality, as well as her relationships with others, can further develop and oh, nope. There she goes.
3. I honestly wonder if Gohā€™s captures of Mankey and Krabby are deliberate subtle references to Ashā€™s Primeape and Kingler from the og series. Kinda makes you think. Though, if Ashā€™s Primeape is any example to consider, that Mankey is gonna tear the closest personā€™s face off next itā€™s released.
4. I really love how, well, wild the Pokemon are in this episode. Itā€™s quite interesting to see Pokemon behave in their natural habitats and honestly something I wish was seen more throughout the entire anime series.
5. I also like that Goh is actually using his Pokemon (that are not Cinderace and Sobble) for useful means other then for a glorified collection. Good on ya, bud!
6. Gohā€™s regular Pokeball actually failed on a non-Legendary mon? Freakinā€™ FINALLY!!!
7. Mewtwoā€™s floaty entrance was a nice callback to its movie. The classic music was also a nice tough as well.
8. Okay, so Ash and Pikachu recognize Mewtwo.... but Mewtwo doesnā€™t? Okay, knowing Mewtwoā€™s nature and personality, this is a good possibility it also remembers Ash and Pikachu, but chose not to say anything as there wouldnā€™t be a need to bring it up. And yet, going all the way to the Best Wishes series, when Ash and Pikachu are confronted by Giovanni during the Meoletta Arc, it didnā€™t really appear the two remembered him (while Gionvanniā€™s own memory of Ash was erased at the end of Mewtwo Returns), leaving it kinda unclear whether or not Mewtwo Returns (the last instance where Ash and Giovanni interacted before Unova) is canon or not. Look, I know canonicity isnā€™t really the animeā€™s strong point and all, but it would still be nice to have a little consistency across the series.
9. Sorry fellow Goh fans, but I LOVED the part where Mewtwo called out Goh on his goal of catching every Pokemon to lead himself up to Mew. Questionable canonicity aside, itā€™s a good callback to Mewtwoā€™s own development from the movies, in that Gohā€™s goal of collecting Pokemon might be off-putting to them, as it would be him just using mons as some sort of huge collection in Mewtwoā€™s eyes. And while Gohā€™s counter speech was a bit forced, he did get his point across that he still wishes to understand Pokemon and be friends, which Mewtwo understood to an extent.
10. Writers, if youā€™re gonna let Goh capture Legendaries, GIVE. HIM. LITERALLY. ANY. POKEBALL. THATā€™S. NOT. A. REGULAR. ONE.
11. Okay, Ashā€™s speech of wanting to fight the strongest Pokemon literally came out of no where and ignore a lot of Ashā€™s own experiences from past regions. Like, well, yā€™know, TAPU KOKO.
12. Sure, Ash. Use the Pokemon whose offensive moves are all fighting-type, the type thatā€™s NOT VERY EFFECTIVE against psychic-types.
13. Sarcasm aside, the battle between Ash, Goh, and Mewtwo was pretty well done. Ash and Gohā€™s mons pulled in their greatest effort, only to get absolutely curbstomped by the legendary angry kitty. Lucarioā€™s Double Team-Aura Sphere was also a real beauty, almost like something you would see in Naruto. Mewtwoā€™s giant Shadow Ball finisher was additionally an awesome callback to the Pokken games.
14. Gonna be honest, itā€™s a little off-putting for Cinderace to no longer be outside of his ball almost 24-7.
15. As I read on Bulbapedia, the Pokemon Mewtwo was protecting on the island were all a reference to real world animal experiments. And with Mewtwo stating that these particular mons have been abused by humans, it really leads to some fridge horror that Iā€™m sure many fans would get a kick out of. Letā€™s just hope Peta doesnā€™t get word of this because fuck peta.
16.Ā ā€œYou are frail, fleeting, immature....ā€ Oh-no. Please donā€™t tell me theyā€™re making it seem Ash and Goh are technically equals to each other again, despite OBVIOUS evidence saying otherwise?
17.Ā ā€œYour journey... has only just begun.ā€ Ugh.... Seems like they are...
18.Ā ā€œYeah. Weā€™ve still got a long way to go.ā€ Yep. Looks like they are going that route. Sorry, writers, but LITERALLY NO. Yes, Mewtwo is a ridiculously strong Pokemon who rightfully stomped Ash, but think about it, would anyone else literally fare any better from what weā€™ve seen? Iā€™m 99.9% confident Champions like Leon and Cynthia would struggle against Mewtwo because, well, itā€™s Mewtwo. And if Ash used other mons instead of glass cannon Pikachu and fighting-type move only Lucario, he probably wouldā€™ve still lost (remember what happened to Charizard, people?), but probably couldā€™ve lasted a little longer than he did with Goh. Seriously, Ash has been through more adventures than Goh could count and is a REGIONAL CHAMPION! Yes, Ash is certainly not on the levels of the likes of Leon and such, but he is CERTAINLY and OBVIOUSLY way over Gohā€™s league! Please writers, you have the perfect opportunity of giving Ash a proper mentor role and youā€™re WASTING IT. ok rant over
19. Lucario and Cinderace carrying their respective trainerā€™s backpacks was cute and I live for that.
Overall, a solid episode with its little mistakes. The action was great and it was awesome for Goh to finally use his other mons for a change. The biggest problem, though, is the anime trying to emphasize that Ash and Goh are both only beginning as trainers, which is just blatantly wrong, but meh. Even if the anime tries to further dumb down on this, Iā€™ll still enjoy it nonetheless. As they say, you canā€™t love something and not see a reason to criticize it. Nothingā€™s perfect, after all. Other then that, there were some missed opportunities of Ash and Mewtwoā€™s relationship as well and some lines of dialogue were forced/shoe-horned, but thatā€™s really a common anime troupe that this series has done before, so Iā€™m gonna hold it back because of that. Iā€™d give this episode an 8/10. A couple of dumb character mistakes, but the action and world building made up for it.
Now letā€™s get prepared for next weekā€™s episode! Which looks like to be..... filler! (again, just because itā€™s filler DOESNā€™T mean itā€™s bad)

Hi it's that Donald Blake au anon, and I agree I don't like Donald in general it's weird and sometimes in the comics he has a stick that he's always holding onto then he bangs it and somehow becomes Thor, idk. But the au is something that really interested me cuz it has so much potential, like is Thor an Avenger in this au, does he have to wait til Loki is not looking to go and save the world? Or is he not worthy yet and somehow choosing to reveal himself to Loki the real way to be worthy?
OH HAI AGAIN, ANON. THANK YOU FOR RETURNING
Tumblr media
Yeah, Iā€™m kind of glad the writers and directors decided to leave out the whole ā€œmild-mannered human aliasā€ from the Thor franchise. Really, so many superheroes already have alter egosā€”Peter Parker is Spider-Man, Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool, literally every single one of the OG Avengers except Thor has another nameā€”that for once itā€™s nice to just have Thor be Thor.
But as far as that brilliant idea you pitched, in the first couple drafts of my answer, I actually started to rewrite Thor (2011) to make your idea fit with canon. However, after getting stuck a couple times, I started thinking it might work better away from canon (specifically Earth 616), more like a true alternate universe, no Avengers or Thanos or anything. Or, to make things simpler, it could just be a Porn With Feelings deal where the story is driven by characters and drama (and, of course, porn).
Tumblr media
For the PWP approach, Thor masquerades as an MD on Earth because he genuinely likes to help people and having a human form helps him escape detection, or possibly keep his powerful electromagnetic radiation field from harming humans. In any case, Loki is unaware of his brothers super-secret human identity.
Somehow Loki bites off more than he can chew or pisses off the wrong supervillainā€”itā€™s practically his hobby, isnā€™t it?ā€”and ends up getting his ass beaten and thrown to Earth. Miraculously, Thor (as Don Blake) is there to help him, and Thor canā€™t risk getting his cover blown, so he just plays along while Loki regains use of his limbs and/or powers (a perfect opportunity for some hurt/comfort whump sickfic type tags). Thor brings Loki to his apartment until he can fully recover, and in that time, Loki finds himself bonding with this disabled and good-natured human man who reminds him so much of his brotherā€¦ and thus begins the forbidden romance and angst-ridden relationship drama.
...okay, so the PWP setup actually has a lot more plot than your average smutfic. (But just think of all the opportunities for medical kink in this one. Like Loki pretending he feels hot and achy and insisting that Blake give him a thorough, private examā€¦ on the kitchen tableā€¦ with stethoscopes and tongue depressors and lots of poking and prodding and pelvic exams. Anyone? No? Just me?)
The actual canon setup is the one I tried (unsuccessfully) to write out, but hereā€™s a bullet list of the basic plot (get comfortable, this gets kind of long):
After defeating the frost giants in Norway in 900-something, Odin secretly makes a deal with Laufey to raise Loki as his own son, then marry him off to Thor so they can establish everlasting peace with Jƶtunheim (just like Odin and Frigga did to stop the Ɔsir-Vanir war). Thor and Lokiā€™s children will be heirs to both royal houses. Upon Thorā€™s ascension to the throne, Odin will then return the Casket of Ancient Winters to its rightful place, and Jƶtunheim will flourish again with Asgard as its protector/ally
Loki is a lot more autonomous and independent than his original cinematic depiction, traveling the realms to learn seiĆ°r and be an ambassador (and cause mischief, naturally, but nothing that canā€™t be fixed or used to his advantage). Heā€™s always held a secret torch for his brother but knows thereā€™s little/no hope of it ever being reciprocated, thus he stays away from Asgard as much as possible
Thor loves and misses his brother (perhaps too much). Their parents would surely disapprove of their relationship, gods or not, and besides, Loki is too much of a free spirit, a wanderer, content with his own company. Asking anything more of him (like a grounded, committed relationship) is something Thor could never do
Loki returns to Asgard on the eve of Thorā€™s coronation with gifts and smiles, and Thor embraces him with deep affection. They almost confess their feelings to one another, but shy away at the last moment (damn!)
Meanwhile, Malekith the Accursed (comics version Malekith, who is a lot sexier and generally more interesting/diabolical than his MCU counterpart) doesnā€™t like that Laufey is planning to make peace with Asgard and sever his alliance with Svartalfheim, and somehow breaks into the Vault on Thorā€™s coronation day just so he can frame Laufey and sour the arrangement with Odin
Tumblr media
Odin decides not to act, sure that something else must be going on. Loki decides to take the intellectual route and do some investigating while Thor and his warrior companions sneak into Jƶtunheim to kick some ass
Thor accuses Laufey of wrongdoing, just as Malekith wanted, and almost incites a war with the frost giants. Odin banishes him to earth to live as a disabled human man until he can learn some humility
After much screaming at the sky and manly weeping, Thor finally accepts his fate and his new human identity
Enough time passes (months? A year?) that Thor eventually learns to be humble and considerate, helping other humans physically and emotionally in the medical field (I imagine him becoming an orderly at a local hospital since being a doctor requires years of education and money. Also, being thrown to Earth without a penny to his name will help Thor work through some of his entitlement and privilege issues. I headcanon he was aided by some good-hearted humans who were able to find employment for him and a place to stay, help him get on his feet, basically)
With Thor out of the way and the royal family torn apart, Malekith begins preparing for his attack on Asgard
Loki doesnā€™t know that Thor is trapped in a human form, only that he was banished and all contact forbidden. Loki is suspicious of the frost giants and goes to Jƶtunheim alone, where Laufey reveals everything to himā€”including Lokiā€™s betrothal to Thor
Loki is stunned at first, unable to believe that the thing heā€™s wanted most was always meant to be his, and he hurriedly leaves Jƶtunheim
He tries to sneak to Midgard without using the Bifrost, but Malekith catches him en route and they fight. He throws a binding spell on Loki to render him powerless and then beats the living daylights out of him
Loki crash lands on Earth not far from where his brother was banished (he had been following the last known path from Asgard to Midgard), and is rendered temporarily powerless and amnesiac, not remembering anything about his fight with Malekith, Thorā€™s banishment, or why he was on his way to Midgard
Loki wakes up in a hospital bed with a kind human man looking after him. After an unsuccessful escape attempt, he settles in and finds himself comforted by Donald Blakeā€™s presence. Itā€™sā€¦ soothing, somehow familiarā€¦(maybe itā€™s the drugs talking)
Thor instantly recognizes his brother but he cannot reveal himself, either because heā€™ll look insane/lose his job or maybe Odin made it so heā€™s unable to even speak the name ā€œThorā€ until heā€™s worthy again. In any case, Thor decides it wonā€™t hurt to beat Loki at his own game just this once (Loki has played this prank on him more times than Thor can count). He ends up taking Loki back home with him once heā€™s discharged from the hospital
As his memories and powers slowly return, Loki is surprised that Blake listens to and believes everything he claims to be, and soon grows to trust and even like the man. Heā€™s never really had a true friend beforeā€¦ except for his brother, Thor, of course. Blake reminds him so much of Thorā€¦
While things gradually heat up between Loki and Blake-Thor, Malekith disguises himself as Loki (just as he did in the War of the Realms comic arc) and returns to Asgard. Odin and Frigga learn that Loki had indeed traveled to Jƶtunheim and confront their ā€œsonā€ about what he might have learned there
Not knowing itā€™s actually Malekith they are speaking to, they reveal the truth about Lokiā€™s parentage and upbringing, and the reasons for his betrothal. Malekith is shocked, then amused at his good fortune. He decides to use this information to his own advantage
Malekith plots to bring Thor back to Asgard and insist that they be married at once. Thor will be crowned king, and when Thor finishes swearing his oaths, Malekith will steal Gungnir and kill Thor with it (and the entire royal family of Asgard). He will then steal the Casket of Ancient Winters, return to Jƶtunheim, kill Laufey and all the rest of his clan, and then head to Midgard to finish off the last of that bloodline: Loki. Then, with the power of Gungnir, Mjƶlnir, and the Casket of Ancient Winters, nothing will be able to stop him from bringing war and chaos to the Nine Realms
My brain is smoking and on its last cylinder right now, and I know this post is already decades long, so Iā€™m gonna cheat and skip the whole part where Thor and Loki somehow learn about Malekithā€™s plot (maybe the Warriors Four come to Earth to warn them), and Thor becomes worthy again, revealing himself to a stunned Loki, and they all go flying back to Asgard, beat Malekith in an epic battle, and save the day
Once the dust has cleared, Thor is crowned king to an audience of Ɔsir and Jƶtnar, followed immediately by his and Lokiā€™s wedding. Everyone cheers, Volstagg weeps and uses Fandral as a handkerchief, and Malekith gets a tiny slice of the wedding cake down in the dungeons
The end šŸ°

Bog
Imagine Creature from the Black Lagoon but made by the creative (for lack of a better word) team behind The Giant Spider Invasion. Ā Thatā€™s Bog.
Bog Lake is the type of little nowhere town that looks as if it ought to have a local cryptid, like the Flatwoods Monster or Mothmanā€¦ and sure enough, tourists who come to fish in the lake are getting drained of blood by some creature with a chitinous proboscis! Ā The police are baffled, the locals are buying guns, and the coroner straightfacedly suggests it might be Count Dracula. Ā The only person who seems to really know whatā€™s going on is The Old Hag of the Woods, and she claims that the swamp monster is some kind of ancient god. Ā Once awakened, it must feed on blood before it can return to the slime at the bottom of the lake and sleep for centuries more. Ā At this point, the viewer is probably expecting something like the Giant Leeches crossed with Cthulhu, but the truth manages to be even cheaper than a Corman film and, unfortunately, infinitely rape-ier.
Why does this movie remind me so much of the works of Bill Rebane? Ā The main reason is probably the 70s soft focus and the midwestern accents, but there are quite a few points that spark specific memories of The Giant Spider Invasion. Ā The movieā€™s heroes are two people in at least their forties, in which the woman is a more qualified scientist than the man. Ā The married couples we see are totally dysfunctional and dissolving in booze. A shotgun-wielding mob forms and chases the monster towards the instruments of its demise. Ā Thereā€™s even a middle school chemistry classroom that stands in for a laboratory (I particularly enjoyed the fact that this, which presumably represents a room in the town morgue, has a map of the moon on one wall) and science that starts out grounded in reality but then dives headfirst into bullshit while hollering ā€œcowabunga!ā€
Tumblr media
On the other pedipalp, there are also ways in which Bog is notably better than The Giant Spider Invasion, most of which have to do with the characters. Ā Admittedly, these do not get off to a good start. Ā The first people we can really be said to meet are two assholes who have come for the camping and fishing, and their wives who have come to complain. Ā The couples clearly hate each other and we canā€™t imagine why they ever got together in the first place, and each individual is kind of an idiot. Ā I wonā€™t complain too much, though, because the crabby wives get eaten almost right away and the asshole husbands fulfill their plot function by bringing it to the attention of the authorities and then follow their spouses out of the movie. Ā Good riddance.
The real characters are the Sheriff, Ginny the Coroner, and Brad the Doctor. Ā None of them are exactly likable but they come across as the sort of very ordinary people youā€™d probably meet in your day-to-day life and while theyā€™re not your close friends, you donā€™t dislike them. Ā Ginny is of an appropriate age for her position of authority, and her colleagues treat her with the respect she is due. Ā Her romance with Brad is clearly something thatā€™s been going on for a while now and doesnā€™t suddenly develop over the course of a weekend, and the two of them are close in age. Ā All three of these characters behave in a professional manner and seem to have good working relationships, which is a breath of fresh air. Ā Far too many movies try to insert unnecessary drama by having characters who hate each other for no reason.
The best of the three is actually the Sheriff, who is one of a very few small-town movie sheriffs who actually seems to take his job seriously. Ā Aldo Ray used to be a real actor, and you can tell ā€“ he plays the Sheriff a with nice everyman quality and a great deal of integrity. Ā This unfortunately makes it all the more puzzling when the character suddenly runs off to fight the monster with fisticuffs and gets killed for it. Brad says it was in the Sheriffā€™s nature to do this but it doesnā€™t seem to match the sensible and down-to-earth characters weā€™ve seen so far.
Tumblr media
I got the impression, actually, that the Sheriff was what was keeping the movie sane because after he dies it starts getting weird. Ā Ginny does some scientific tests that consist mostly of pouring coloured liquids into Erlenmeyer flasks, and determines that the monster is made of cancer and molybdenum. If either of these facts have any effect on the plot I missed it, although I did imagine Crow deciding the monster was his long-lost relative. Ā Then we get into how it reproduces and things go right off the deep end.
You see, thereā€™s only one of these monsters, and itā€™s a boy. Ā Fauxilla got around this through hermaphroditism, but the monster from Bog prefers the Humanoids from the Deep route. Ā If youā€™re lucky enough not to have seen Humanoids from the Deep, its fish monsters have decided they need human genes to speed up their evolution. Ā The monster in Bog does kind of the opposite, devolving humans to make them compatible with itself. Ā It does this by injecting a dose of its own blood into the victim and the result is a huge clutch of transparent spawn that Ginny describes asĀ ā€˜not really a seed, not really an eggā€™, whatever that means.
Tumblr media
This, we later learn, is how the Swamp Hag knows so much about the creature ā€“ sheā€™s apparently been its mate for hundreds of years! She dies attempting to warn the monster that itā€™s walking into a trap, which leads Brad and an ichthyologist to conclude that one effect of this infusion of monster hormones is that ā€˜the victim becomes willingā€™. Ā That is icky and I hope it doesnā€™t reflect the writersā€™ feelings about real-life situations of sexual assault. Ā The idea is intended to add urgency to the need to rescue Ginny from the creature.
Creature from the Black Lagoon never did give a reason why the titular monster was interested in kidnapping human women. Ā It was obvious enough that the Creature was supposed to be a sexual threat, but its quest was clearly doomed and it was not apparent why the women were attractive to it. Ā Humanoids from the Deep appears to have arisen from the brain of somebody who spent way too much time thinking about these questions and trying to come up with answers to them. Ā Bog decided its monster simply didnā€™t have any choice ā€“ there arenā€™t any other bipedal things around for it to mate with. Ā What neither of these movies realize is that the questions didnā€™t need answers to begin with.
There are things movies need to be explicit about, and slimy swamp creatures raping women is not one of those. Ā A lot of times, horror works better when the details are left to the viewerā€™s imagination, and the fact that Creature from the Black Lagoon doesnā€™t understand that it cannot get what it wants from its captives actually makes it worse. The writers of Saturn 3 did something similar with Hector the robotā€™s crush on Alex and while Saturn 3 was not a good movie overall, that aspect worked fine. Ā Going into the details just gives the audience an opportunity to think about how stupid it is.
It is worth noting that neither Creature from the Black Lagoon nor Saturn 3 felt a need to use the words the victim becomes willing, either.
The monsterā€™s silhouette resembles a man in a fish costume he probably bought on Amazon, and it sounds like it doesnā€™t want to get up in the morning. I suspect that hidden in the poor lighting is something that would be a shitty movie monster classic on the order of The Giant Claw or the spidermobile from The Giant Spider Invasion, if only we could see it. Ā There are very few things I enjoy more than movies that are loud and proud of their abysmally cheap monsters, but sadly Bog doesnā€™t want to show off.
This is doubly a shame because a lot of this movie just drags. The bit with the scuba divers takes way too long for the payoff it gets. Ā Brad and Ginnyā€™s makeout scene lasts way after weā€™ve gotten the point, whether or not it bothers you that the people doing the kissing are middle-aged. And anything with the two fishermen and their wives is not only slow, but annoying. Ā The movie is at its Giant-Spider-Invasion-est here, when everybody on screen is a repulsive caricature of a human being and you canā€™t wait for them to die.
Tumblr media
There may be a slight 70ā€™s Natureā€™s Revenge angle to this film, in that the monster is apparently awakened by some idiot fishing with dynamite, but Black Lagoon is evidently the primary inspiration. Ā Unfortunately, all the things that made that movie enjoyable are missing here. Ā The monster doesnā€™t look particularly realistic or well-adapted to its environment. Attempts at suspense are just boring and the movie is unnecessarily explicit about things that should remain implied. Bog is not a complete write-off as bad monster movies go, but itā€™s not all that great either.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tuesdayā€™s Zoeyā€™s Extraordinary Playlist season premiere. Proceed at your own risk!
Zoeyā€™s Extraordinary Playlist showrunner Austin Winsberg is well aware that some viewers are not fans of needlessly endless love triangles. So instead of drawing out the titular heroineā€™s Max vs. Simon conundrum, Tuesdayā€™s Season 2 premiere found Zoey making a choice between the two handsome men. After watching a recorded video message from her late father, encouraging his family to continue on with their lives following his death, Zoey finally had a talk with Max. The past six weeks had given her plenty of time to think, and now it was time to ā€œcarry onā€ā€¦ by kissing Max!
Below, Winsberg explains why Zoeyā€™s decision was a bold choice for the show and what it means for Simon, the fella who lost out on Zoeyā€™s heart. The EP also talks about bringing back Peter Gallagher as Zoeyā€™s beloved father and previews how Max and Moā€™s new business venture will impact their friendship. (And for scoop on whether Lauren Grahamā€™s Joan will be back, click here.)
TVLINE | Zoey, seemingly, makes a decision when it comes to Max. So what is their relationship status moving forward? Are they officially dating now? Certainly seems as if they are going in that direction.
TVLINE | ā€œSeems,ā€ as in looks are deceiving? [Laughs] No. I think that they are definitely making a go at trying to be together.
TVLINE | What made now the right time to pursue things with Max? The messaging that she gets from her father in Episode 1, itā€™s just this idea of moving on and carrying on and having to make decisions in life, that you canā€™t just stay in neutral. I felt thatā€™s kind of also true about our love triangle, in general. I felt like we had to make some choices in terms of the love triangle. I just feel like Zoey, herself, feels like, ā€œI canā€™t keep being flip-floppy with both of these guys. I need to make the choice.ā€ And so she makes the choice. And then weā€™ll deal with the consequences.
TVLINE | Was there a lot of debate in the writersā€™ room about it being too early in the season for her to make a choice, or about which guy she should pick? When I was coming up with the pitch for the season, when we first started talking in the room, [we discussed] how much time did we want to go back and forth between, ā€œShould it be this guy, or should it be that guy?ā€ There were a lot of strong feelings in the room that Zoey is turning 30 this year on the show, and that a lot of that kind of behavior could feel very young. And also, just sort of reading the Twitter boards and all that, thereā€™s definitely a faction of people out there that donā€™t like love triangles. [Laughs] I just felt like, at a certain point, whatā€™s real, you know? If one person keeps stringing two people along for a long period of time, it could be one or both of those people, eventually, sort of being like, ā€œYou know what? I donā€™t want to do this anymore.ā€ So I just felt like it was a bolder choice to make the choice than to keep living in the indecision.
TVLINE | Where does this choice leave Simon, who is still carrying a torch, if that Jet song number is any indication? Simon has been doing a lot of his own self-growth and has gone through a lot of his own therapy. There was, unfortunately, a scene that we had to cut, where he talked a lot about this in Episode 1. Simon is very much trying to ā€” and we hear this from him in Episode 3 ā€” support Zoey in whatever Zoey wants to do. He knows what itā€™s like losing somebody, and he understands the challenges of that, and he doesnā€™t want to pressure her into something. So he just wants to be there to support her on her emotional journey. And so even though he might not be thrilled that Max is the one she picked, he is also trying to be respectful of what Zoey wants.
TVLINE | Will he be moving on, romantically? Might there be a new love interest for him? Thatā€™s something we will definitely be exploring, moving forward.
TVLINE | I loved the way you were able to incorporate Peter Gallagher into the premiere. Are you finding other opportunities to bring him back occasionally? Yeah. I was very reluctant to kind of go down the Dexter or Six Feet Under routeā€¦ We already have a magical idea on the show with the musical numbers. I thought to add another big idea that she could sort of have these conversations with her dad all the time mightā€™ve been like one magical idea too many. So itā€™s just about being creative in the ways in which we bring him back.
TVLINE | The way you staged the ā€œCarry Onā€ number, with some of the actors sort of freeze-framing, was very nice. Thank you. That was definitely a tricky one for [choreographer] Mandy [Moore] and me to figure out. How do we keep everybody in the frame? And also, we just liked the symbolic idea that everybodyā€™s sort of been frozen in time, in a moment, with what happened with Mitchā€¦ That song, ā€œCarry On,ā€ is very thematic of what we go through the whole season of the show, which is everybodyā€™s stuck in different ways, everybodyā€™s coping with death in different ways. But we have to all figure out ways to carry on, regardless of the tragedy that weā€™ve just been through. Once we kind of cracked that frozen idea, it definitely helped us create that number.
TVLINE | And how is Max and Moā€™s new business venture going to work out for the two of them? Is mixing friendship and business a good idea? Itā€™s one of the major story points of this season that we will explore through all the episodes. I think youā€™re right ā€” what is it like to work with friends who have two very different personalities? One is very right-brained, the other is very left-brained. How does that creative, artistic mind mesh with somebody who is very business, logic-oriented? Weā€™re going to see a lot of growing pains between the two of them as they try to navigate starting this ambitious restaurant idea together.

Lonnie
I donā€™t have much else to do and Iā€™ve seen some mostly friendly discussion on this topic so I wanted to throw my hat into the ring. A welcome distraction from less interesting fandom debates.
Lonnie Byers. Dead beat, absent father of Jonathan and Will. It seems from the very getgo, Lonnie and Joyceā€™s relationship was on the rocks and yet somehow he got her pregnant. Twice.
In some ways.... Lonnie is very representative of my own family situation. Constant arguing, kids being put in the middle of the conflict. Mom raises the two kids all on her own (in my case, we had government assistance). I donā€™t have a volatile relationship with my dad like Will and Jonathan though. Heā€™s never laid a hand on me, he was just... EXTREMELY absent and I have accepted that many times in his life, Iā€™m sure he wished my brother and I didnā€™t exist. (people do change though, my brother and I kinda chose to keep our dad in our lives and itā€™s generally worked out and much better now that weā€™re grown so my parents donā€™t have to talk to one another)
But, I can tell. Lonnie is NOT like my father. Lonnie appears to have more issues than just being absent and a toxic relationship with his babies mama.
It seems to me, Lonnie is irresponsible with his money and constantly put his familyā€™s financial health at risk. It seems like he has/had a drinking problem or possibly something more (drugs). But one of the most OBVIOUS things to me is, I think Lonnie was physically abuse to go along with the emotional kind.
There is no picture perfect definition of abuse. It manifests in various ways. Do I think Lonnie beat his family until they were black and blue with constant blood and scars? No, that pretty obviously isnā€™t the case.
Lonnieā€™s physical abuse seems to manifest as:
Pushing his family around
ā€œWrestlingā€ which is actually just pinning them forcefully and pretend to be playing around
Corporal punishment. I was going to say this is a given, it was the 80ā€²s. Even I got ā€œwhoopinsā€. But I know thatā€™s probably not as common as I used to think
Physically imposing/threatening. Even if he doesnā€™t touch them, Lonnie was/is bigger than all of them. (Even with Willā€™s growth spurt, if heā€™s only the same height as Jonathan, Lonnie is still bigger and stronger)
Obviously, none of these are the intense stories you hear about abusive dead beat dads. You could almost say it was tame. Some would say none of these classify as physical abuse, but I think it does.
You can see it in the show.
Lonnieā€™s first appearance in the show is shoving Jonathan hard against the wall and then complementing his ability to finally push him off. Which means in the past, he has probably pinned Jonathan to the wall or the floor or whatever before many many times and Jonathan wasnā€™t strong enough to push him off. Note, Jonathan was 9 years old when Lonnie left and Will was 5.
When Joyce and Lonnie are arguing in the house, he technically doesnā€™t put a hand on her, but it does tower over her quite a lot. Maybe in the past that wouldā€™ve gotten to her (my mom is even shorter than Winona and she comments a lot about how much she hates how some taller people use their height to get at her. I honestly donā€™t think most people do it on purpose though. Lol)
Joyce uses a hammer to force Lonnie out of the house. When Hopper later comes to tell her sheā€™s right, sheā€™s literally prepared to use it to attack. I donā€™t know about you but we know Joyce and itā€™s not really her style to threaten non-threatening people with weapons. No matter how much she and Hopper argued in season 3, she didnā€™t pick up a knife to make him do what she wanted.
And then, weā€™ve got Will. Sadly, we never saw the two interact on screen (love me some family drama and trauma!). Will is the most timid kid you ever did see. I explained my family situation to you guys early for this very purpose, Will is trying to do what me and my brother did.
When I was younger, I was terrified of rejection from my dad. I did whatever he wanted to do to ā€œhave funā€. I watched what he watched. Went where he went. Never raised a major complaint to his face always afraid heā€™d disappear again or say aloud he didnā€™t want me. People pleaser to a fault.Ā
That is Will, but worse. He probably took on these traits not only because heā€™s afraid of rejection from his father (which has happened his entire life), but also doing or saying the wrong thing resulted in backlash from said father. Was it physical? I donā€™t know, I do get the feeling Will did not get nearly as physical as Jonathan and Joyce though.
Now that Iā€™ve said all this, does this make Joyce weak? Does it make her a bad mother?
No! I donā€™t think so. Even if Lonnie sometimes physically abused her, it doesnā€™t mean she sat there and took it. Joyce is a small tiger. Despite her size, she will fight for herself and her kids and Iā€™m 100% sure she did, which is why Lonnie ā€œleftā€. (I have a headcanon that Joyce gave him an ultimatum and his punk ass couldnā€™t take it so he left thinking Joyce would come crawling back to him. Which maybe she did once or twice because she was desperate for financial stability)
Joyce needed Lonnie at some point for financial stability. Thatā€™s the only reason she kept him around at some point. When she didnā€™t need that anymore, she was done with him and the constant battles. Toxic relationship for sure for sure.
When people say Lonnie was a physical abuser, it isnā€™t to make the Byers seem weak willed or even to say they have to be protected. Itā€™s an explanation as to why they are the way they are (Joyce and Jonathan are fighters, Will is a bit more timid). It doesnā€™t mean they laid down and took the abuse. It doesnā€™t mean we need to handle them like fragile sculptures.
It means the Byers are tough. If Lonnie is reintroduced, it would certainly be an antagonist force, but he would be met with suspicion and antagonism. Lonnieā€™s only route back into their life.... is people pleaser Will.
This is why I kinda want Lonnie back. Joyce and Jonathan are already firmly in the ā€œscrew you, Iā€™ll fite youā€ camp, I want Will to be there to. The writers just need to give him the opportunity....

abandoned Star Wars fic #1
This was an AU I started a while back (2014) based off the pre-Disney Buyout version of the Expanded universe. Itā€™s basically justĀ ā€œwhat if Luke did join the Empire like he was discussing with Owen and Beru back in A New Hope?ā€
My original plan was for the fic to be a trilogy, following the same main events of the original trilogy. I abandoned it because I got discouraged (for the same reason I always get discouraged when writing fic for a fandom thatā€™s been around since the dawn of time), because the Star Wars fandom is so big and there are so many amazingly talented writers in it that this AU has probably already been written, and probably written better than I could ever write it.Ā
So, I never even posted it.Ā
Until now...Ā
(Oh! Also, it was gonna be a Luke/Mara ship. All my Star Wars fics are Luke/Mara.)
...
[ImpPilot]
Chapter One:
"I'd like three quarters of my pay to go to this account, please. If I can do that." Luke asked.Ā
Even heading strait to the Fleet's financial office immediately after his graduation ceremony instead of going out to celebrate with his bunkmates, it still took an absurd two and a half hours before he could see an actual officer -nothing more than a glorified accountant, really.Ā
"You'll meed to fill out form 6-23-A." Without even looking up from his personal terminal, the financial officer passed Luke a data pad with the blank form already open on it. "You're not the first boy wanting to send money home to his silver-haired mommy. Be sure all the routing numbers are correct and specify whether or not its a savings or checking account, or if its a business account. For business accounts you'll need to fill out an additional form."
"Uhā€¦ I think its a domestic checking accountā€¦" Luke said. More thinking out loud than actually speaking to the officer. The moisture farm was, technically, a business, but he didnā€™t think Tattooine was sophisticated enough for business accounts. At least, not reputable ones.Ā
"There's a terminal in the lobby you can use if you need to call home and ask. Regular holo-net fees apply -which this office will not compensate you for." Once again, the financial officer did not look up from his desk.Ā
Right. As if Uncle Owen would even answer. Neither he nor Aunt Beru had answered any of his calls since he left home and signed up with the Fleet.Ā
But they just didn't understand. Luke couldn't spend his life in the day to day routine of moisture farming, watching the rest of the Galaxy turn around him. He wanted to get out and get away. See the world beyond the backwater dust-ball of his childhood and explore brave new worlds in his adulthood. But the Lars hadn't have much money and it wasn't like Luke's late parents (of which very little was spoken of) had seen fit to leave either him or his guardians any money or property of value, there were little avenues or opportunities open to him to get off world. In fact, there were only two possible ways for a poor desert brat like him to get off world.Ā
Join up with a pirate or smugglers crew. Or sign up with the Imperial Space Navy.Ā
So, Luke chose the lesser to two evils.Ā
He signed up for the navy.
At least it was legal.Ā
He went out early the morning of his sixteenth birthday after his mind was made up. Sneaking out of the farm house and into the garage, Luke intended to take the speeder into Anchorhead. Owen was waiting for him in the garage. Intent to stop him. Apparently, his sneaking wasn't too stealthy.Ā
He gave a speech about the stupidity of what he was about to do. That it was foolish and he was just fixing to get himself killed. That he was just like his father -he was a damn fool too!- and that he would just end up hurting everyone else who cared about him. Luke ignored everything his uncle had to say though. His mind was made up and there was nothing Uncle Owen could do to stop him.Ā
Aunt Beru was a bit gentler with him, but still just as disapproving. She met him outside the garage, as he was trying to maneuver the speeder around the complex. She brought him a sandwich lovingly wrapped, as if he were just going out to do maintenance on the vaporators. She asked Luke not to think poorly of his Uncle, he was just trying to protect him. There was a war on and the reason why the Fleet was so eager to lock new recruits into contracts was because they needed more and more bodied every day. That's all he would be to the Navy, just another body to throw into the war.Ā
That time Luke did pause. He placed his hand over hers, resting on the side of the speeder. He assured her that this was something he had to do and that he wouldn't die the death of a nameless soldier. He couldn't explain how or why, but he could feel it. This was something he had to do, and he would not become just another body counted in the war. He would be something.Ā
Perhaps that was the wrong thing to say, because a shadow of fear crossed her face. But it was there and gone in the space of a second. She turned her hand, resting under his and grabbed his wrist, stronger than he thought she was capable of. "Don'tā€¦ don't use the name Skywalker." She said suddenly. "Its a common name out here on the Rim, but it's a dangerous name to have closer to the Empire. Don't enlist under Skywalker. Use our name. Use Lars."
Luke blinked at her. "Why?"
But she didn't answer and he was in to much of a hurry to wait and pester her.Ā
That was the last he ever heard from either of them. Neither his aunt or uncle either called him or returned any of his calls during his time at the Academy. There was no reason to assume they would answer the comm for him now. In fact, Luke wasn't even sure if they would take his money now that he would actually be earning some. But they had raised him. And the farm wasn't easy or cheap to maintain. Maybe with the extra money, his uncle could hire a few more hands to help them out.Ā
Luke just filled out the form the best that he could and handed it back to financial officer.Ā
"Alright, Lars, your request should be processed in another eight to ten standard days. Everything should be in order by the time for first earning statement is payed." He said looking over the datapad. "Oh, and you forgot to fill out your pilot designation."
"Oh. Right, sorry. Its DS-42-6."
The officer began typing as Luke spoke, filling in the missing information on mental auto-pilot. "Dā€¦ Sā€¦ -Wait? DS? Death Star? They assigned a green kid like you to the Death Star!?" He gaped up at the kid, actually looking at him for the first time.Ā
"Top pilot in my graduating class." Luke said, not at all ashamed of the pride that seeped into his voice. Being the top flight student was a significant achievement and not even Uncle Owen could deny that. "I guess they wanna deploy their best people on the most important postings."
"What was that number again?"
"Squad forty-two, pilot number six." He answered.Ā
"Well, Luke Lars, I imagine you going far.
ā€¦
Most of Luke's bunkmates went out to celebrate their graduation almost immediately after the ceremonies. That meant that they all had a few hours head start on him and would probably be to faded to be good company when he did arrive. But that still didn't stop Luke from stopping in at the tapcaf they agreed on for their after grad party.Ā
As to be expected, of the twelve men Luke had shared a barracks with for the past two years, only three of them remained when he walked through the door. One of them was just paying his tab, a woman Luke had never seen before under one arm.
"I'm telling ya, baby, I ship out tonight." He was saying to her. "Oh, hey Lars, ya made it! A bit late. Maybe you can scoop Vard and Ika up off the floor."
He left.Ā
Vard and Ika were leaning over a table against the back wall. With a sigh, Luke crossed the tapcaff to assess them. Of the twelve bunkmates that Luke actually got along with, Ika was probably the closest one he would come to calling a 'best friend'. They weren't nearly as close as Luke had been with Biggs, but then, Biggs had to go off and desert on his first tour and place Luke in an uncomfortable situation with ISB right at the start of his second year at the Academy. Some great friend he turned out to be.Ā
But Luke wasn't gonna think about that now. This was the eve of his graduation from the Imperial Naval Academy. This was a happy day. Even if he was about to spend it taking care of his two drunk bunkmates that -in all likelihood- he would never see again. With a conscious effort, Luke pushed Biggs from his mind.Ā
Ika seemed to be past out on the table. A disposable coaster his only cushion against the hard plasteel and vinyl of the tabletop. Vard was at least sitting mostly vertical, but by the looks of it no less drunk. He used one hand to prop his face up while the other shot into the air in an unnecessarily showy greeting. He flailed spastically. "Hey! Look who made it!"
"A bit late, I think." Luke said as he slid into the booth next to Ika.Ā
"Nah. I's cool. We'll just get a new bottle." He flagged down a serving droid. "Another round for me and my buddies. And make the late arrivals a double -to make up for lost time."
"Belay that." He said to the droid. Luke just shook his head. He was in no mood to get drunk tonight. The fact that he was to report for transport and deployment absurdly in the morning or risk missing the boat aside, he just had a feeling it was in his best interest not to get completely sloshed. "We'll have a round of caff instead. And make their's a double."Ā
Vard scoff. "Ya know, Lars, for a guy who never had a daddy growing up, you act an awful lot like my father." With no small amount of effort, he pushed himself to his feet and jerkily maneuvered out of the booth. "Forget this. I'm going to finish cleaning out my bunk."
Staggering mildly, he made his way to the door, where he flagged down a transport. Well, at least he would be safe taxieing back to base.
Luke turned to look at Ika. He should probably call a transport for him too.Ā
Standing, Luke crossed to the public holo-net, passing a very pretty red-head on his way and he lamented the fact that he had to take care of his drunkard friend. She probably wouldn't want to stay and chat with someone who associated with rowdy or irresponsible soldiers like them. Suppressing a sigh, he dialed the public transport company's number that had been very boldly posted over the terminal's key-pad and ordered a taxi to take Ika (and probably him too) back to base.Ā
It didn't take long for the transport to arrive and when it did, Luke helped the driver carry his passed-out friend into the back seat. But Luke didn't feel much like going along. He had come to this tapcaff expecting a party -it was the eve of his graduation, after all- he felt he was entitled to at least some form of celebration. Luke payed the transport driver and went back into the tapcaff.
It was only after he sat back down at their table that the serving droid appeared with their three cups of caff.Ā
Luke's face fell into the palm of his hand.
The pretty red-head by the holo-net terminal gave an amused laugh.Ā
Luke looked back at her and their eyes met over the empty tapcaff. Her eyes were brilliant, and deep, and very very green. The bottom dropped out of his stomach as he felt a wonderful and glittering feeling of exhilaration at the fact that a pretty girl was looking at him with a smile. That glittering feeling was quickly scrubbed away, however, when Luke remembered that he had no idea how to talk to girls.Ā
Back home, he'd hung out with Fixer's girlfriend. But that was always in a group setting and besides, she was already in a relationship with someone. There were a few female cadets at the Academy. But you didn't talk to them like girls unless you wanted to get punched in the dick. Luke really didn't wanna get punched in the dick by the pretty red-head.
Perhaps he hesitated a little to long after their eyes met because the red-head picked up her own drink and crossed the room to sit at his booth. "You gonna drink all those, Cadet?"
Oh, crap. The pretty girl was talking to him. What should he say? Should he make a joke? Or play it strait? Did girls like funny men, or strait forward men? Well, whatever he said, he better say something soon. Luke suddenly realized that his silence was stretching on into awkward territory. "Uh, uhā€¦ I, uhā€¦ Its 'Pilot'."
"What?" She blinked at him with those deep, sparkling, emerald green eyes.Ā
"I'm not a Cadet anymore." I explained quickly, his ears coloring self-consciously. "I graduated today. Now I'm a Pilot."
"Oh. I see. A pilot." She gave one of those smiles people give when they're humoring a small child and Luke suddenly felt like he had already messed up with this girl. The flushing of his ears spread to his cheeks. She must have noticed the blush (then again, how could she not?), because she took pity on him. "You're not very good at this, are you?"
Luke blinked. "Uh, not good at what?"
"Flirting." She said as if this should have been obvious. "Chatting up women. Attempting to entice them to leave with you. Shore leave doesn't last forever and you can't afford to waste time. I assume you're shipping out tomorrow?"
"Y-yes." He nodded.Ā
"So you've got, what, maybe seven hours before you have to report to your transport."
"Well, yes, actually." Luke had to pause. She knew an awful lot about military logistics. But then again, this was an Academy town. The locals must be used to young soldier-boys coming and going and trying to pick up their young women in between.Ā
"Well, Pilot, I've got even less time than that." She informed him, running a finger over the rim of one of the untouched caff mugs. "Ya see, I just came here for a quick job and now that the jobs done, I've only got a couple hours before I have to be lifting off and flying out."
"Oh, do you work for a shipping company?" Luke asked. Work was a polite subject to discuss, right?
She just shook her head, her red hair cascading round her shoulders in elegant waves. "No, no, you're getting this all wrong." She said. "Listen, Pilot, I have to ship out soon, you have to ship out soon. You're cute. I'm hot. And we're both lonely. You can't take me back to your barracks, and I won't take you to my ship. So, I was thinking of maybe one of those pay-by-the-hour places down the street from the port. We share a couple hours together, then go our separate ways. I don't tell you my name, you don't tell me your pilot designation."
Luke just blinked at her. Itā€¦ it sounded like she was trying to proposition him. The blush on his face colored to almost scarlet. Oh, the things Aunt Beru would have to say if she heard this. "Iā€¦ I'm sorry, Ma'am, but I don't do that sort of thing. I, uh, I wasn't brought up that way. Butā€¦ if you like, I'll treat you to dinner."
With a sigh, the woman leaned back in her seat. "I don't suppose I've got the time to hunt down a better deal. Alright, Pilot, a chase little dinner date it'll be."
Finally feeling balanced for the first time since she sat down, Luke flagged down the serving droid. "Two menus, please."
She learned forward, resting her chin in her hand. "Well, Pilot, you're the first man to ever refuse my offer. So, either you're a perfect gentleman -which thought were just creatures of pure myth- or else I'm not your type of company."Ā
"Oh, I know I'm not a perfect gentleman." Luke assured her. He was idealistic and given over to fantasies and delusions of grandeur. Definitely not perfect. "But my aunt did raise me to be respectful."
"Good aunt." She took a sip of one of the abandoned cups of caff.Ā
"Soā€¦" Luke began awkwardly. "If you don't tell me your name, and I'm not allowed to tell you my pilot designationā€¦ what are we gonna talk about?"
"Good question." She nodded, tapping her bottom lip in thought. "What made you decide to become a pilot?"
"I was a little short for a Stormtrooper." He joked. "But actually, I always wanted to be a pilot. My father was a navigator on a spice freighter and a navigator is basically a co-pilot."
...
AND THATā€™S ALL SHE WROTE!
That was Mara Jade sitting with him at the tap caff, BTW. Luke wasnā€™t gonna see her again until after the destruction of the Death Star.Ā
Vader was gonnaĀ ā€œsense a ripple in the Forceā€ once Luke arrived on the Deathstar for his tour of duty. But he wasnā€™t actually going to take note of Luke specifically until Obi-Wan, Han, and... BIGGS DARKLIGHTER break onto the Deathstar to rescue Leia.Ā
In this AU, Biggs lives. Heā€™s the one who makes the shot that destroys the Deathstar.
Luke and Vader are the only survivors.Ā
After their fighters (Vaderā€™s TIE Advanced, and Lukeā€™s shitty regular live-1 TIE fighter) are picked up by another Imperial ship, Vader confronts Luke face-to-mask.
Lukeā€™s all likeĀ ā€œI wanted to be a pilot because of my father.ā€
To which Vader repliesĀ ā€œOwen Lars has never been, nor will he ever be, a pilot.ā€ (Remember: Luke enlisted under the name ā€œLarsā€.)
Luke should be confused by Vader knowing so much about his uncle, but Lukeā€™s also kinda dumb. So he just assumed Vader read his personnel file. He getā€™s all self-conscious and confesses to enlisting under a different name. Owen Lars is actually his uncle, not his father. His fatherā€™s name was Skywalker.Ā
Vader doesnā€™t visibly react, but behind his mask heā€™s just like,Ā ā€œOH SHIT!ā€
And thatā€™s where theĀ ā€œA New Hopeā€ volume of this AU was gonna end.Ā

[Countdown to 2021] Top 5 Kdrama of 2020
This past year of what was undoubtedly an absolutely horrendousĀ year of 2020--for a variety of reasons--I can honestly say that one of the reasons why I stayed sane was because of Kdrama. Being at home all day, even for an extreme homebody for me, can get harrowing because the choice of going out or not was taken from me when my area went into lockdown.
And so....to Kdrama it is. I think that 2020 was one of the very few years that Iā€™ve seen nearly all of the Kdrama that aired on MBC, SBS, KBS, TvN, and jTBC...which is....a lot, Iā€™ve come to realize. That brought me to think--which would I consider my top 5?
Hmmm.....Well, here I go.
Please note that my top 5 are not in any particular order. Each one that made it to my top 5 is beloved for a completely different reason. I also donā€™t go down the critic route and pick apart the direction, the story, yada yada. I just made this list purely on how much I enjoyed them and how much theyā€™ve made an impression on me.
(SPOILERS AHEAD.)
#5 -- The Tale of the Nine-Tailed
Starring Lee Dong Wook, Jo Bo Ah, Kim Beom, Hwang Hee
Tumblr media
I like Lee Dong Wook as a Grim Reaper, and I like Lee Dong Wook as a gumiho/nine-tailed fox. What can I say?
That being said, The Tale of the Nine-Tailed was really about Kim Beomā€™s character Rang. He started as a villain (sort of), then became a reluctant ally (sort of), and then met his end with a smile. He redeemed himself throughout the entire drama, and I shed a lot of tears in the final episode, because he finally was afraid to die because he had something to live for, but his desire for his brother to come back was so strong that heā€™d gladly give up the remaining time he had, stolen as it was, to give his big brother a final gift. His sacrifice made an impact more with me than any other character because it was so out of character for him, and yet not. His choice wasnā€™t unexpected, and yet I felt like a train wreck when I finally saw it on the screen.
#4 -- Half of a Half/A Piece of Your Mind
Starring Jung Hae In, Chae Soo Bin, Lee Ha Na, Kim Sung Kyu
Tumblr media
Or....known as the drama that is known for being tragically cut short. Let me tell you, I lovedĀ this drama. Itā€™s not an epic romance drama by any means, but the tone of the drama was really calming and healing, which is basically the premise--two lonely souls grieving find solace in one another.
I do wish that they didnā€™t drag the mystery ofĀ ā€œWho is the husband?ā€ for so long, but I enjoyed the dynamics between Moon Ha Won and Ha Seo Woo so much that I really didnā€™t mind it. I really wished that they wouldā€™ve kept the original run of 16 episodes instead of slashing it to a mere 12, because it really limited the writer and directors to wrap up the story, but I also do think that if they went with the 16-episode route we would definitely have the noble idiocy trope inserted, some way or another, instead of the really lovely way that Seo Woo wanted distance from a devastated Ha Won, to get over her sadness and fear of happiness, in order to run to him.
#3 -- The Flower of Evil
Starring Lee Jun Ki, Moon Chae Won, Jang Hee Jin, Seo Hyun Woo
Tumblr media
If KairosĀ was a suspense drama, The Flower of EvilĀ was definitely a thriller teetering on the edges of horror. My God, this drama scared the living daylights out of me. Lee Jun Ki as a (alleged) sociopath I could see, considering that he acted a similar role in the drama-that-must-not-be-named, but in the flashbacks his serial killer fatherā€™s eyes was enough for me to shut my laptop and just breathe.
....And that was before the introduction of Kim Ji Hoonā€™s character.
Lee Jun Ki is the main lead, and the story focuses on him, but the one who shone in this drama was definitely Kim Ji Hoon. Iā€™ve watched Kim Ji Hoon over the years, and I am somewhat convinced that his sudden appearance as a very psychopathic killer will jump out at my screen and strangle me in my chair. Itā€™s very different from his usual roles and, my God, I am looking forward what heā€™ll choose for his next project.
#2 -- The King: Eternal Monarch
Starring Lee Min Ho, Kim Go Eun, Kim Kyung Nam, Woo Do Hwan
Tumblr media
Ah, the epic modern-Korean monarchy...but with a twist of parallel universes, and more! (Letā€™s sprinkle in time travel while weā€™re at it!)
I think that this is the one drama in 2020 where I was simultaneous satisfied that it was finished, and yet still full of unanswered questions. Like, how does a cross-universe couple happen? Especially with doppelgƤngers?? And why can only certain people remember what happened??? What happens now????
Putting that aside, The King: Eternal MonarchĀ had one major flaw: Lee Rim, played by veteran Lee Jung Jin. I felt that they completely his potential as a very potent villain in the interest of creating an epic love story. I did love the Lee Gon-Jung Tae Eul couple and chemistry (which they did, contrary to some peopleā€™s opinions), and it was the characters that really stayed with me--i.e. Jo Young/Jo Eun Sup. Woo Do Hwan really outdid him in both his characters. He nearly convinced me that it was two different actors play two characters!
And...now to #1.
#1 -- Do You Like Brahms?
Starring Park Eun Bin, Kim Min Jae, Kim Sung Chul, Park Ji Hyun
Tumblr media
OK....I said that I loved each drama differently, right? Ahahaha....yeah, all lies. If I were to pick just ONE drama of the year, itā€™d be Do You Like Brahms?Ā
How many ways can I wax poetic about this one? I am still obsessed with this drama, and so very happy that Kim Min Jae and Park Eun Bin won the Best Couple Award for this drama at this yearā€™s SBS Drama Awards. I have my gripes about the drama, but they donā€™t in any way outweigh the highs.
I just loved the respect and communication between Park Joon Young and Chae Song Ah, both before as acquaintances/friends/comrades in respective unrequited loves, and afterwards as the giddy, heart-fluttering moments as a couple. They understood each other, and accepted one another, as two people experiencing the same pain. They didnā€™t try to sugarcoat it or hide it behind a smile, which they did towards everyone else. Even with Joon Youngā€™s missed opportunities to communicate, Song Ah tried her very best, when she clearly told him that she didnā€™t appreciate being in the dark, and that she wanted to lean on him. I also loved how in the drama, their words and actions mirrored one another, in the way that they confessed their feelings, and asked the other to wait--not a rejection, but for an opportunity to catch up.
Honorable Mention -- Forest
Starring Park Hae Jin, Jo Bo Ah, No Gwang Sik, Jung Yeon Joo
Tumblr media
I really like Park Hae JIn, and I really like Jo Bo Ah, so put them together? Yep, we have Forest--a drama that mixes romance, mystery(?), and the proverbial forest. The drama did fall kind of flat, which was a disappointment, considering how much news Iā€™ve heard about it, and the villains didnā€™t get as much development they needed to seem as ā€œevilā€ they should be.
One of my favorite lines of the drama I think will stay as one of my favorites is a line made by Park Hae Jinā€™s Kang Sang Hyeok in the final episode (yes, I know): ā€œThe reason why Iā€™m acting like this now...is solely because of my personal revenge--the sacred sense of duty that you think I have...I donā€™t.ā€ He acknowledges his wrongdoing and is making amends, but he doesnā€™t apologize or try to coat his actions as anything but self-serving. Heā€™s not someone who immediately changes due to the power of love, but takes it slowly.

Bottom Ten Three Houses Characters
I decided after a while that I couldnā€™t fulfill an anon request to do a top 10 list for the whole series, because it would overlap too much with ones Iā€™ve already done - lord privilege is a thing that exists, and Iā€™ve ranked those before -Ā and because itā€™s really difficult to compare so many characters (~600 if weā€™re being thorough) across so many different games.Ā  Instead I decided to go negative with it, although around 2/3rds of these ought to be totally uncontroversial at least in my corner of the fandom. Starting from the one I dislike least:
(Dis)honorable Mention: Anna, for putting in such a lackluster showing that she doesnā€™t deserve a spot on this list despite technically being in the playable cast. Itā€™s not only the lack of supports, although that hurts, but also how obvious it is that the writers have no new material for her. Annaā€™s gimmick worked fined when she was an NPC and perhaps for the space of a single game as a playable character, and Fates originated the meta idea of making her paid DLC so you have to shell out real money to use her, but thatā€™s the extent of her here too. As a unit sheā€™s far from spectacular, and her paralogue isnā€™t even good for much but a ton of (mostly mediocre) drops and a tiny bit of context for that PallardĆ³ guy from non-CF Chapter 13. Hereā€™s a revolutionary idea: for the next original FE it might be good to have Anna back to being only a wacky dimension-hopping NPC shopkeeper.
#10 Constance - It pains me that sheā€™s on this list, more than anyone else by far. I really wanted to like Constance, and at first glance sheā€™s right up my alley as a haughty impoverished aristocrat coping awkwardly with her diminished status. I like the dark flier class sheā€™s built around, and her default personality is an even louder pre-timeskip Ferdinand whom you know I love. However, itā€™s thatĀ ā€œdefault personalityā€ bit that sours me on her, because sheā€™s got two of them. What could have been an interesting take on Constanceā€™s struggles with identity and self-esteem in the wake of her familyā€™s disgrace is presented in such an over-the-top comedic manner that itā€™s impossible to take her very seriously. Itā€™s more reminiscent of FE13ā€²s Noire than anything, and at least she has the excuse of a mother who performed dark magic experiments on her and fractured her psyche. Constance also supports Jeritza and yet somehow they do no more than lightly allude to their personality issues which is as much a missed opportunity as you can get with such a terrible character (see below), opting instead to try softening Jeritza with his fondness for roses. Lovely.
#9 Leonie - Fandom exaggerates her Jeralt fixation, although it does pop up at the worst times (see: her Byleth support right after his death). As Iā€™m not very concerned with Bylethā€™s nonexistent feelings though this placement more comes down to general indifference. Leonie feels completely disconnected from the rest of the Deer, and although sheā€™s a supposed reflection of the houseā€™s more egalitarian bent thereā€™s nothing connecting her to the politics or larger culture of the Alliance until you learn about her student loan debt. She really is best understood as a Jeralt fangirl first and foremost, which is why perhaps the most surprising thing about her is when reality comes knocking in her endings and it turns out she picked up her mentorā€™s vices as well. Jeralt himself would be even further down this list were he playable, but as he isnā€™t Iā€™ll have to settle for side-eyeing all of his adoring fans. Which brings me to....
#8 Alois - Remember that dating sim Dream Daddy that people were talking aboutĀ a few years ago? The one that willfully misunderstands what the termĀ ā€œdaddyā€ means in gay male spaces to write fluffy dad joke-laden romances intended for a presumably not-gay audience? Alois is the spirit of that game personified as an FE character, which is not something I ever would have thought to know that I didnā€™t want. Heā€™s got some funny lines here and there, but thatā€™s the most you can say about him when otherwise heā€™s just passable midgame filler (of a unit type each house including the Wolves already has one of) standing in Jeraltā€™s imitation Greil shadow. I donā€™t even mind the platonic S support all that much because itā€™s still only Byleth, but it occurs to me that just about the only thing that would have made Alois memorable would be if his S support was romantic but he remained married to his wife. I canā€™t think of a time when this series has allowed the player to indulge in adultery, so even if it had been limited to an option for f!Byleth it would have been a fascinating option.
#7 Cyril - This isnā€™t about his devotion to Rhea, which is fully understandable given his circumstances. Nor is it about his performance as a unit which in my experience at least is actually rather good for a Donnel/Mozu-style villager archetype. No, what gets me is that heā€™s a self-righteous workaholic which makes for quite the grating personality trait. I understand that he finds meaning in his work and that heā€™s got some entertaining supports calling other characters to task for their terrible work ethics or ignorance of the lives of commoners (VW should have really dug more into his back-and-forth with Claude), but the lectures on not interrupting him or telling Byleth to get back to work are as tiresome as they are frequent. Itā€™s petty I know, but one can only hope he grows out of it eventually. At least he doesnā€™t wear a pot on his head....
#6 Mercedes - Like Constance, sheā€™s the type of character I wanted to like from the start. Sheā€™s pious pseudo-Catholic clergy, with a quirky thing with ghosts and some quiet lesbianism with her BFF that I can take or leave but that I know some people really enjoy (and also sheā€™s bi-for-Byleth, but no one talks about that). Unfortunately as I touched on when talking about Marianne in my Top 10 characters list, Mercedesā€™s appealing points are sharply contrasted against her more annoying ones. The breathy voice acting I can mostly get used to, but her backstory is unnecessarily convoluted - three families and two flavors of evil adoptive father - and as is also true of Constance her association with Jeritza drags her down a fair bit. To this day I still have no idea what weā€™re meant to make of the Lamine siblingsā€™ dynamic, but Mercedesā€™s eagerness to overlook her brotherā€™s crimes and unrepentant bloodlust so she can coo over what a sweet boy he is deep down say some pretty odd things about her personal moral code. Maybe it was implied all along with the paranormal fascination that sheā€™s not as orthodox as she appears to be, but the dissonance is real especially in CF where she gets a support line with Jeritza that tries to woobify him and affirms how much she loves him...and meanwhile in monastery exploration sheā€™s wringing her hands over how much she hates the idea of fighting Faerghus and the church. Thereā€™s no through line here, and as justification for characters siding with Edelgard go this one is pretty flimsy.
#5 Gilbert - Similar to Cyril, I donā€™t dislike Gilbert for the reasons that most of the fandom does. Yes, heā€™s a crappy father, but as Iā€™m pretty indifferent to Annette and to father-child bonding in general I can appreciate the fresh spin he places on the archetype of the devoted knight. In short, heā€™s a knight who wasnā€™t devoted and ran away from his duty, and his arc in AM is all about making up for his past failures both to his family and to his liege. This is an angle to knighthood FE doesnā€™t delve into often, and it makes him an explicit foil of Dedue as explored in their supports. The reason that Gilbert is on this list though in fact has more to do with that opposition, because I am painfully aware that had AM not killed off Dedue by default in service of self-insert romance Gilbert would not have had to be scripted as Dedueā€™s replacement both as a unit and as a retainer figure. Itā€™s not hisĀ ā€œfaultā€ of course, insofar as one can ever blame fictional characters for the actions of their writers, but whenever Iā€™m running AM and have to take those randomized supply run quests from Gilbert instead of the routeā€™s actual retainer Iā€™m reminded of how we were robbed of power couple Dimidue (in AM anyway - CF of all routes delivers on this point). Gilbert could have been father of the year to Annette and freely given Byleth his (grand)daddy dick and it still wouldnā€™t overwrite the fundamental problem that Byleth screwed over all three AM-exclusive characters in different ways. As to that, well...look at #1.
#4 Raphael - Itā€™s hard to describe just how much wasted potential there is to this guy. Along with Ignatz and Leonie he could have illustrated the greater social mobility of the Alliance and the increased opportunities non-nobles enjoy there, but all three are mostly side characters. Heā€™s repeatedly positive in the face of tragedy and remains motivated by his love for his remaining family, but 90% of his dialogue revolves around either eating or training to the point that heā€™s arguably the closest FE16 comes to gimmick character writing (something almost every FE is guilty of, but that has come under heavy scrutiny in recent years because of how much Awakening and Fates used it). He has a sweet friendship with Ignatz with even a bit of chemistry that sits in good company with the kind of simply affability he has with almost everyone he supports, but they have a no homo ending involving one of the gameā€™s eternally offscreen characters. He supports Dimitri, but the bara content is thin on the ground and their line stands out as easily the least substantial of the house leadersā€™ cross-house supports. Even as a unit heā€™s lackluster, in the same repetitive category as Alois with nothing that makes him really stand out from the other axe-and-brawling guys. Highest HP growth in the game...whee. Iā€™ve seen arguments that Raphaelā€™s simplicity is the source of his charm, and while I can sort of see that he feels like he belongs in a game like the GBA or Tellius titles where characters have a much smaller amount of overall content to their name. In a game like Three Houses the sheer torrent of lines about food and training wear thin quickly.
#3 Bernadetta - see #8 here. To sum up, sheā€™s annoying, her sex appeal falls flat with me and is frankly just kind of confusing, it bugs me that a significant portion of the Ferdibert fandom headcanons her as Hubertā€™s bestie when the man clearly does not do besties, and the most positive thing I can think to say about is that based on her habit of befriending known murderers among other things she might be a bit of a sociopath. Thatā€™s not very flattering, but at least itā€™s somewhat interesting. Oh yeah, and Edelgard setting her on fire at the Gronder rematch is good for a meme although I suppose that isnā€™t technically attributable to Bernadetta.
#2 Jeritza - Jeritza sucks. Everyone, apart from the small number of fans into Bylitza for some reason, is aware that he sucks. Heā€™s a bloodthirsty serial killer weā€™re meant to like because he killed his father to protect his sister and also because he likes ice cream and kittens...and because heā€™s clearly mentally ill in some way and Edelgard is weaponizing his illness for her war which means all the murder is okay, I guess. Jeritza is like FE7 Karel if he was somewhat important to the plot and that instead of a redemption arc between games he got Karla and some other characters swearing that heā€™s really sweet deep down and also he can romance the male self-insert - yay. I love the line of thinking sometimes espoused in anti circles that M/M Bylitza is the only non-Problematicā„¢ Byleth ship because heā€™s their only gay romantic S rank partner whoā€™s not one of their students, a loli, or Rhea who is obviously the most evil character in the game. As Iā€™ve mentioned above Jeritza also makes other characters he supports worse by association, although heā€™s not quite as bad in that regard as #1. Do I even need to bring up the painfully affected voice acting? Itā€™s ironic that the vocal director for the English localization turns in unquestionably the worst performance among the named cast, and I have to assume he picked the role for himself solely because he sounds like an imposing Death Knight and not because his voice is at all suited to the troubled twunk underneath the armor. Just about the only thing that would have salvaged Jeritza for me would be if he and Hubert got to have an epic competition to determine once and for all which of them is more evil. Hubert would wipe the floor with this poser.
#1 Byleth - see here at the bottom. They fail as a self-insert, they fail to be a properly realized character even more than previous Avatars, they damage other characterizations and arcs all over the place, and Three Houses overall would have been vastly improved if they didnā€™t exist or at least werenā€™t the PoV character. In that previous post I listed just two reasons why I still prefer Byleth to Robin as an Avatar, one being that their significance to the plot is set up before the game even begins and the other being that their lack of a voice makes f!Byleth a less obtrusive presence when it came time for me to have her S rank all the guys to fill out the support log...not enough to where I could treat her as a self-insert, but any amount helps. I do however have to add a third small bit of praise for Byleth, in that they apparently drive antis up the wall for the most asinine of reasons which is always entertaining to witness. I recall when this gameā€™s school setting was first revealed that everyone in the fandom nodded their heads and made the easy prediction that there would be teacher/student sex because thatā€™s just how FE rolls, but somehow still thereā€™s outrage over it. Even so, Byleth is horrible by every significant parameter, and itā€™s a shame weā€™ll only be able to imagine what FE16 would have been like had the developers not felt the need to write the whole thing around an Avatar.
