Big Mouth, Episode 16 (Finale)

Is Chang Ho becoming the kind and just Big Mouse that Mi Ho wanted him to be...or more of a villain? I thought that the drama showed Chang Ho’s descent? into darkness in a very subtle way, in the way that he drives into the tunnel, and the lack of lights inside flickering on and off his and Mi Ho’s wedding picture. Mi Ho’s death, tragic as it was, changes Chang Ho irrevocably, perhaps not in the way Mi Ho wished him to be. We see him becoming the head of an organization instead of leaving it as he says he would back in Episode 14. The black-and-white tones of the final scenes becomes telling into what kind of Big Mouth Chang Ho may become.

Yeah, the headcanon that Vincenzo, in one of his few visits to Korea, gets married to Cha Young in a courthouse ceremony using his Korean name while avoiding the authorities will live rent-free in my head.

One of the reasons why I love, absolutely love, the Chayenzo pairing is their dynamic with one another. Neither seeks to change the other; both support and understand one another. [Day 6] Tell Us Your Headcanon/AU/Crossover Ideas

Oh ahahahahahaha, the ideas I have.

Headcanons

1. Vincenzo is always the first one to rise--Cha Young likes to sleep to the last possible second, hitting the snooze button a few times before grumbling and throwing herself out of bed. But once, once she manages to wake before him. She lays there, watching him wake, to be greeted in Italian: "Buorgiono, caro."

2. Each time Cha Young leaves Pagliuzza, one of shirts disappear from Vincenzo's wardrobe. It's always returned the next time she comes back, only to have a different one disappear with her. (She never tells him why, that she sleeps better with his scent.)

3. (Recycled from one of my previous posts) It's not often, but sometimes, packages mysteriously show up on Cha Young's doorstep--one time a silk scarf, another time a beautiful jewelry set. The packages never have a return address, as if delivered by hand, but all contain a single note inside in the same loopy handwriting: To my sweetie.

AU/Crossover Ideas

1. (Doom at Your Service AU) Reeling from the death of her father at the hands of Babel Group, Cha Young drunkenly invokes the name of Vincenzo, the God of Doom, and summons him from the darkness. He comes in a form-fitting suit and a blaze of fire, with a smirk on his face. "You called?"

2. (Descendants of the Sun AU) Cha Young is fired from her law firm after pissing off the wrong client; in desperation, she takes a position as a human rights lawyer and is shipped off to Uruk, a war-torn country desperate for help. It is there that she meets Captain Vincenzo Cassano, leader of the special forces team on a peacekeeping mission.

3. (Magic AU) Many know that Cha Young's gift is fire--it's in her fiery temper, her loud-as-life personality. Many also assume that Vincenzo's also the same, because he always carries a lighter, and because fire is his favorite method of inflicting damage; only a select few have seen Vincenzo use his gift of skewering his enemies on spikes made of ice.

4. (Lawless Lawyer Crossover) Bong Sang Pil and Ha Jae Yi are breaking down the aftermath of the Babel Tower case when they come across two interesting names: Hong Cha Young, former star lawyer of Wusang Firm, and a foreigner Vincenzo Cassano, suspect in the kidnapping of Wusang Firm lawyer Choi Myung Hee.

5. (Healer AU) Vincenzo Cassano, the rumored Healer who will do anything for the right price, is commissioned by Babel Group to take out Hong Cha Young, the former star lawyer of Wusang Firm after she gave crucial evidence to prosecution in revenge for her father's death. He goes undercover as an intern, but never expects to fall in love with her in the process.

[Day 5] Favorite Character(s) in the Show

Besides my favorite Chayenzo...

I would say Jang Han Seo? In Vincenzo, Han Seo was one of the characters that had the most character development, and I greatly enjoyed watching his metamorphoses throughout the show after I'd initially written him off as an idiotic but largely ineffective enemy.

I think that the audience's perception of his character has to do with the way Kwak Dong Yeon portrayed Han Seo, more so than the writing. We see a loud, unsympathetic villain who is really a dunce and a puppet to a boy in an adult's body constantly afraid of the monster that torments him and craving for any scraps of affection. The change is so gradual and subtle that at some point we all root for Han Seo's victory over his older brother, with Vincenzo behind him.

[Day 2] Favorite Scene of the Show

All of 'em. All of the Chayenzo moments.

...is what I want to say, and would say, but if I were to pick my top three, they would actually be....

1. The scene in Episode 10 when after drinking makgeolli, Cha Young and Vincenzo take turns watching each other sleep. It's a quiet scene, with no words involved, but everything that needs to be said is conveyed through the way they look at one another. In the animal kingdom, sleeping is considered to be a vulnerable state, which is why animals always find a safe place to rest, sleep with one eye open, or take turns guardian their companions' sleep. Cha Young and Vincenzo allow themselves to be vulnerable in front of each other in an implicit show of trust.

2. The scene in Episode 17 where Hwang Kyu, one of the two watchdogs, bombs himself at the Babel Tower event. The scene is one of my favorites because of the way Cha Young and Vincenzo interact with one another. I love the way the drama depicts Cha Young as not one of the normal candy heroines we often see, the kind of heroine that influences the hero to be morally upright and fight the enemy "the right way." Cha Young is not that kind of heroine. Despite her initial horror and recoiling at what Vincenzo had planned, Cha Young thinks about how her father was killed, and the promise that Vincenzo had made to her--that those responsible for her father's death would pay--and she jumps right into the darkness with him.

Vincenzo also shows how much he respects Cha Young as a person. He knows that despite her unconventional methods and willingness to bend the law to get what she wants, she inherently does not have the capacity for cruelty, a lesson he learned as a consigliere. That's why he is the one willing to push the button, to absolve her of that guilt. (Also, did anyone else catch his little gesture of clearing her seat on the couch when she sits back down after deciding not to stop him?)

3. The hospital scene in Episode 20.

You cannot convince me otherwise that Vincenzo and Cha Young, at this point, are in a committed, established relationship. We see a lot of brief, fleeting touches between Vincenzo and Cha Young throughout the series, but his stroking her hair and wiping away her tears in this scene is one of the few times that his touch is deliberately intimate.

[Day 1] Favorite Vincenzo Episode

OK, super late to the #VincenzoAppreciationWeek, but spotted a number of posts on this when I just decided to look up recent Vincenzo posts on Tumblr, and leaped onto the train. (I have a feeling that all of my submissions will be Chayenzo-centric, though.)

Favorite Vincenzo episode? Episode 19. (Though, in reality, can't really choose one.)

Why Episode 19? Because it was Vincenzo's answer to Cha Young's confession words in the previous episode.

Throughout the drama, we're given numerous reminders that Vincenzo and Cha Young's love language towards each other isn't words. It's in the color-coding in the way they dress, in the way that they both are willing to go through the unconventional route to get what they want, in the way they stand side-by-side against a common enemy, in the way that they're irrevocably partners.

It's also in Episode 19 that we, for the first time, see Vincenzo fearful. Vincenzo, true to his name, is the victor that constantly outwits the enemy by being one or two steps ahead--but nothing prepares him for the reality when Cha Young uses her own body to shield him from being shot. After losing his mother, Vincenzo is truly afraid of losing someone he loves.

OK, can we now cue for just OTP sweetness for the final episode? is that too much to ask?

Translation-wise, this wasn't as difficult as the previous one. Myul Mang's answer to Dong Kyung's shell-shocked questions is "손자비" which is translated to "a person who hands a hand," but the meaning behind it is that the original Korean likens it to a role/job, like that of a doctor or a bus driver. Myul Mang's Kim Saram's purpose in life is to hold onto Dong Kyung's hand.

The umbrella also holds significance, not just unique to the story, but mostly as a romantic trope. Umbrellas have been used as a symbol of a fated love, more commonly known in the Japanese ai ai gasa ("相合傘") translated as "to share an umbrella" or "love-love umbrella.

Seo In Guk's "행복하지?" is translated as "Are you happy?" but the meaning behind the question is to confirm if she is happy, not asking if she is. It's the subtle differences in the way that the characters speak that speaks volumes to what they're trying to convey.

But besides that, I hear that tissue boxes are needed for today's episode. ;______;

Just....leave me be.
