translation: bokura no hikari (our light)
Tumblr media
Wow it’s been a few years since I translated a song lolol. There are a few translations of this very popular AND FUCKING TRAGIC one out there already, but because the grammar gets a bit convoluted I’m sure this won’t be the last. Put it like that.
This translation draws heavily on prior art at the SMT wiki and by /u/JLazarillo on reddit.
夢を夢と気づいた夜 君を見つめ瞼を閉じる yume o yume to kizuita yoru, kimi o mitsume mabuta o tojiru The night I realised this dream was a dream, I closed my eyes as I looked at you,
温もりも重ねた手も声も 目覚めれば微睡みへと消えて nukumori mo kasaneta te mo koe mo, mezamereba madoromi e to kiete The warmth of your hand in mine, and your voice - if I awoke, the last of them would disappear,
.
僕らが二度と会えなくても 過ぎた時が痛みに変わっても bokura ga nido to aenakute mo, sugita toki ga itami ni kawatte mo Even if we never meet again, even if the time we had hurt in the end,
その痛みでね導いてよ 僕を照らす夜空の星へと sono itami de ne michibiite yo, boku o terasu yozora no hoshi e to It's that pain that will guide me towards the stars in the bright night sky.
.
甘い甘いおとぎの国 君と会えた歪んだ世界 偽りの幸せでもいいと告げる口 君がそっと塞ぐ amai amai otogi no kuni, kimi to aeta yuganda sekai itsuwari no shiawase de mo ii to tsugeru kuchi, kimi ga sotto fusagu You silenced me when I told you it would be fine: the fake happiness of that sweet, sweet fairyland, of that distorted world where I could meet you.
.
思い出の始まる日になる 君が消えた自分で決めた道 omoide no hajimaru hi ni naru, kimi ga kieta jibun de kimeta michi [lit. it's become the day my memories of the path you, who disappeared, chose yourself begin.] Now it's the day my memories begin, of you disappearing, choosing your own path for yourself,
歩くのさずっとせつなくても 僕の目指す明日の星へと aruku no sa zutto setsunakute mo, boku no mezasu ashita no hoshi e to [lit. even if it's painful, I'll always walk towards the stars of the tomorrow I'm aspiring to anyway.] Even if it hurts, I'll always keep walking toward the stars I'm reaching for, the stars of tomorrow.
.
目覚めて現実が来る昨日と違う悲しみが大切だから明日を生きてゆく mezamete genjitsu ga kuru kinou to chigau kanashimi ga taisetsu dakara asu o ikite yuku [lit. the pain that's different from the yesterday when the reality I awoke to came is precious, so I'll live on into tomorrow] I’m glad the pain’s better today than it was yesterday, when I awoke to this reality, so I'll keep going until tomorrow.
.
僕らが二度と会えなくても過ぎた時が痛みに変わっても bokura ga nido to aenakute mo, sugita toki ga itami ni kawatte mo Even if we never meet again, even if the time we had hurt in the end,
その痛みさえ超えてゆくよ 流す涙乘り越えより高く sono itami sae koete yuku yo, nagasu namida norikoe yori takaku I'll leave that pain behind far more easily than I will my many tears,
.
そして掴むよ 澄み切った空 永久に浮かぶ僕らの光を soshite tsukamu yo, sumikitta sora, towa ni ukabu bokura no hikari o And I'll seize that starry sky, that will remind me of our light forever and ever.
---
errata
2023-02-23—second-last line, took another look at yori takaku 2023-02-23—last line, tsukabu -> ukabu 2023-04-28—jibun de kimeta michi: this is an almost direct Akechi quote, and jibun is "yourself", here (telling someone else's story). also that is the last time I paste dialogue from the wiki. 2023-05-14: various minor wording changes. 2023-05-19: turns out nukumori and kasaneta te are often linked, and it means the warmth of the hand you're holding.

What kinds of fanfiction does the YGO cast write?
unironically a phenomenal ask, thank you
Yuugi: tooth-rotting fluffy hurt/comfort or dark fic where he whumps/punishes the characters he hates, with no in-between.
Anzu: very romantic and swoony, but also somewhat unhinged, shippy stuff.
Kaiba: deeply thoughtful and introspective character-forward fic, but it's about exactly one character and he's intensely possessive about the character and hates everyone else's characterization of them on principle.
Atem: the most likely to project onto the character he likes best, not in the "I'm giving this character my traumas" sense but "i want to be this character" sense and "tests" them out in various AU or what if? scenarios to see how they act/react or change depending on the situation. Clearly he's working some things out for himself.
Jou: remember in the manga when he gave Yuugi a porno VHS? pwp, but it's surprisingly sincere and heartfelt.
Honda: cute gen things but you'd NEVER know it was him.
Ryou: utterly terrifying vore.
Otogi: writing insanely amazing things for a fandom no one else cares about.
Mokuba: an incredible and talented fan artist that everyone kisses up to but he never takes requests, he can't be commissioned, and he draws fanart for kaiba's fics ONLY.

" . . . You do realize this means you'll be spending heaps of money, right? " Ryou would remind his friend, head only lightly tilting at the absurdity of his challenge.
He'd gotten used to this sort of thing. With Otogi, some form of new game or CHALLENGE was bound to come up at almost every interaction - Ryou knew, and even admired, that - despite his occasional protests over the exertion of effort they would sometimes entail.
Tumblr media
His concerns this time, however, were more directed towards the mild intimacy of the dare - a HUG prompted some form of physicality, one he didn't particularly MIND but had not often found reason to do; and thus was never really quite used to.
" Oh please. Like you'll go around hugging the entirety of japan or something. "
Ryou fell quiet.
" I doubt you can even get one in, Ry. " the dice-roller would double down, now leaning against the counter - as he often did - and TWIRLING a lock of his hair. All, of course, matched with a wide grin which tugged tightly at the corners of his lips; the man knew full well that Ryou had been more provokable than he liked to let on.
" What if I do? "
" Like I said: you get a figurine. " A shrug.
" Limited edition? "
" Mhhm. "
" . . . in perfect condition? "
" Of course. " a brow cocked in dramatically feigned offense. " What do you take me for? "
" I'm just making sure I understand the terms. "
" Jeeeeeeeeze, this isn't a business deal, y'know. I'm not about to draw up a contract and slam a dragon-with-a-heart stamp on it. "
" Right. " He would've very much liked a contract though. " Do I get one for each hug? "
" Yeeeeep. It's starting to sound like you're procrastinating. "
" Because I am. "
" HAH! Called it. " proud of the obvious - yep, that was Otogi. Ryou failed to find within him even an ounce of surprise. " So what'll it be? Do you accept my - very kind, one hundred percent generous, totally adorable beyond compare - challenge? "
" . . . fine, ok. "
" Now let's see you actually live up to it. " he'd muse, attempting to imagine each and every scenario that could possibly spark from this. He figured a hug from Ryou would, in most cases, come as a SHOCK - whether it be pleasant or not. He'd also conclude that - from the one he'd had during their singular, failed, week of dating - it wouldn't be very warm; and would lack the right degree of TUGGING that really gave a hug its intimacy.
.
.
.
He'd find himself gravely mistaken.
It did come as a shock - as he'd managed to predict. Even as Ryou looped behind the counter; even as he came in closer. - for some reason the gesture never registered until Ryou's form realized Otogi's own - hands looming over his waist in an awkward manner before finally settling with a TIGHT ENGULF. The height difference would leave soft, white fuzz brushing lightly against the lower portion of Otogi's cheek, right down to his shoulder. Ryou could never really manage to tame his hair - its UNRULINESS grew particularly recognizable as it reached through every space between them. Every bit within its range, it touched.
It wasn't warm. Physically, it wasn't warm; Ryou must have been some sort of reptile in disguise or something with skin that cold. But it did carry within it a level of emotion Otogi may not have been ready for - if Anzu was here, maybe she'd find the words to describe it - call it something like the ultimate display of friendship.
Otogi, however, would describe it more as a strange token of appreciation; and, partially, a way of proving him absolutely wrong. - a way of WINNING this telepathic game they'd apparently been playing.
It would end as abruptly as it started - with Ryou pulling out and somehow managing to teleport behind his friend.
" That's one figurine. " he'd monotonously declare - lacking the ability to thrown in a smug demeanor.
" I- " Otogi couldn't help but squeeze out a chortle. " Way to find the singular loophole! " he'd commend, now completely relaxed. " Ok, ok, you got me. But let's see how many more you can put in, whitey. "
" . . . I can find people. "
" Well then go forth, soldier. "

Thief King for the ship ask 😁
Send me a character and I'll tell you (<- Still Accepting)
**Just a warning, I accidentally wrote 1000+ words and probably more then half of them are slightly off topic
My NOTP for them
If I had to choose, probably Ryou Bakura/Yami Bakura but only because I write him (Thief) as 32/34 and them as 16/18 and as his little brothers. So I can’t see them in a romantic light, which is a shame cause I had this cool fic I was writing back in 2016/17 that I can’t finish cause I write Thief so differently these days. But as found family they are absolutely the best group you could imagine!!! (Thief virtually is prepared to sign adoption papers for them in most things I’ve been writing lately. Hideki doesn’t mind letting his sons have an extra sibling so it’s all good.) In saying that I still adore when others draw them (mostly cause I know they draw a different Thief King to me)
My BROTP for them
Mai Valentine, I mean they’d gossip about girls and boys all day and go shopping maxing out Thief’s budget constantly and never even leaving a dent in Mai’s. They stay up late watching trashy tv with the most sarcastic remarks and they try on perfume together. They have loads of fun, Ishizu still isn’t overly keen on Thief but still her GF loves him, what she gonna do? It confuses people sometimes since Mai on odd occasions refers to Thief as Big Brother and Thief refers to her as Big Sister. They don’t know why they can’t both be the oldest sibling.
My OTP for them
Atemu!!! (Pharaoh Atemu, not Yami Yuugi-I count all Yami’s as completely separate people to their host or past selves) but I love enemies to lovers and the amount of times Thief has tried to kill Atemu until it turned into crappy flirting and plus while he was trying to murder the guy, Atemu still felt compelled to help bandage him up if any of the attempts backfired like when Atemu moved in with Yuugi for a while to figure life out and Yuugi smashed Thief with a chess board. Yeah… he kinda kept breaking into Atemu’s places to fight, Solomon set up a curfew and battle hours because Yuugi needs his sleep.
My second choice pairing for them
Hmmm, honestly not to sure. I kinda been stuck on the he’s married to Atemu thing for a few years now? maybe if I wrote him younger, Otogi? but honestly I made all the ancient peeps a lot older then the main cast, I just can’t think of anyone from that era for him as a second choice pairing. But I mean him and Otogi can sit around playing with dice and looking fabulous. Plus I think Thief would 100% support his dice game, anything to show up duel monsters just cause he knows how important it is to Atemu and co. The only issue with this pairing would be that Otogi and Malik’s relationship can be iffy and Thief would probably be one of Malik’s besties if they were the same age -_-
Actually!!! I changed my mind, but like a platonic ship if thats fine, I mean Otogi was sorta platonic anyway so I doubt it matters. But Kisara. I feel like she could kick his ass and he’d be totally amazed by that, plus she looks flawless and moves so swiftly when she kicks him in the cheek to stop him stealing her lunch. He also likes that she’s sorta deceiving cause no one expects her to stand up for herself and he smirks, takes a step back as she tells off whatever jackass was being rude to them. That and they can share jewellery and stuff, probably have things in common about lost and found family, young deaths, unjust deaths. Fire… I honestly don’t know a lot about Kisara but this old RPer (they’ve sadly deactivated) wrote her really well and I’ve read one or two short fics about them and thought they were cute!!! ((still leaving my above answer just cause))
My fluffy pairing for them
Atemu… I know it’s enemies to lovers, but like image when they get to the lovers stage. They’d be so cute and fluffy half of the time. I bet Thief would love to snuggle up to his husband and probably bite him at random yes… but still! I love writing random domestic stuff too and they’re so cute. Thief cleans their place and if Atemu tries, Thief just redoes it claiming he did it wrong. Where as if Thief cooks, Atemu has to recook it since it’s all basically raw. Atemu is supposedly Thief’s control tower to stop him doing stupid stuff, but honestly Atemu can get distracted from time to time and find himself in the middle of it instead -haha >u< ((Yeah for people who didn’t know, basically all I write about is casteshipping already married or engaged. It’s like my second or third favourite yugioh pairing - I say that cause currently two are tied for first, otherwise it’d be second for sure))
My angsty pairing for them
Mahado / Dark Magician. I’ll admit I’ve never written or drawn them romantically and Mahado’s aromatic and not very interested in a relationship let alone one with Thief, but I do like their dynamic. In all honestly I feel like there’d be a lot of difficult feelings between them, different to how Thief would be with Atemu. Atemu he blamed for a massacre his uncle did and his parents hid. Thief may never forgive Atemu for this, not completely but he can come to terms with it, it wasn’t his fault and they were both messed up kids by fate and the Gods.
Where as Mahado, he fought along side Atemu and I do believe him and Atemu are best friends, but theres a lot of difficult feelings between him and Thief that I don’t think either would want to address or bring up so they’d put it off until you could cut the tension with a knife somedays. It’s complicated.
Thief doesn’t overly hold many hard feelings toward Mahado in a general sense, not for the things that happened in their first life, if anything he’d probably be the one to form the crush first. But Mahado, Thief killed him. Thief threatened the life he knew, everything her cared about was threatened because some misguided child waged a war against his childhood best friend over something he didn’t even do. Mahado has trouble seeing that Thief has changed, that things are different now, he more so tolerates him. Which pisses Thief off because he’s worked hard on himself and it hasn’t been easy putting his entire past behind him when it was apart of him for so long, and he thinks Mahado can still be a ‘Self sacrificing coward with no will of his own. Pathetic.’ If they dated I’d say they’d break up, but I do enjoy the dynamic and the idea.
My favourite poly ship for them
And despite the above statement, most likely Atemu and Mahado. Mostly cause I think Atemu would be interested in a three way, while he admits it’d most likely be a very hate filled three way, he’s curious. Thief and Mahado took a hard pass.
My weirdest pairing for them
IDK, most of the things I do with Thief revolve around him being married to Atemu, Mahado checking in on him to make sure he’s not fucking things up ((the gods assigned Mahado to do this)) Thief adopting Ryou and Bakura cause Hideki’s always working and Amos and Amelia are dead. He plays big brother a lot of the time, and I say he’d like guys only so IDK between everyone being too young for him in the universe I’ve created in my head and I’ll be honest I got sorta off track with canon and non-canon when it comes to ages and siblings and family and everything else. Also Zorc is trapped in another dimension and he calls him his uncle when people ask and Diabound is just Diabound, his protector and guardian angel. Basically watches over him…

As Yugi goes through his papers, Seto observes with rapt attention. There is a lot of material to go off of already, which is good. They won’t have to do too much in the way of building mechanics.
He leans in a little to get a better look. His eyes aren’t terrible, but he needs a good visual to get a decent grasp on what they’re going to need to construct. He nods.
“Despite my personal relationship with Pegasus, we still work seamlessly with Industrial Illusions and have rights to most Duel Monsters cards and data.” He reaches over to turn to the previous page so he can go over it again. “From what I’ve gathered, Otogi had licensed DDM to the company, so there was no copyright issue there.”
He can feel the heat radiating off of his companion, they’re so close. It’s beginning to take up part of his attention in a way he wishes he could suppress.
“There shouldn’t be an issue.” A small smile pulls at the corners of his lips. It doesn’t come as a surprise that this would be related to Duel Monsters in one way or another. “I’ll need to make some copies of most of these pages to have on hand.”
He pushes himself to his feet again. He strides over to his desk and scoops up his laptop. He opens up Altium and drops back onto the couch.
“Let me see the sketches of the board again.”
Honestly, Yugi had expected a lot more pushback about something or another where the game was concerned. But the fact that Seto seemed to approve of what he had so far and was rolling with it was a really big ego boost-- It would have been a pretty big ego boost even if he had not found himself twitterpated by the CEO.
As Seto sat back down beside him with his computer, Yugi gave a nod, first flipping back to the pages with the sketches he had done of his proposed battle map and said, "I wanted to have a hard copy, of course, but I also put all of the notes on a USB and they are saved on my computer at home. So you can actually just keep this folder and here is this."
From his pocket, he withdrew a little flash drive with a cartoonish Dark Magician printed on it. He offered it out to Seto and said, "Thought that probably a digital record was more your speed, you know?"
He then did his best to focus down at the spherical drawings and ignore the feeling like his heart being caught in his throat. He only vaguely managed it.
"These are the basic idea of what I was thinking. I am open to tweaking them as needed, but I thought that having the battle map randomly generate at the beginning of every match would be really cool. Never being able to anticipate the layout or where resources will be, or even where your starting point will be. Make you have to think on your feet. Some matches may position you at complete opposite ends of the map, allow you to build up defenses and resources, but other times you spawn directly beside one another and have to go hard out the gate," he chuckled and gave a shrug and asked, "What do you think?"

Hi! First time requesting so I’m a little nervous. Could I please get dating head cannons for Qi? The man doesn’t get that much love...
dating qi: headcanons
[𖤐] hello hello anon! thank you so much for requesting this! don't be nervous to request; i'm at your service for writing :)) [and qi is totally underrated so i loved this] writing qi is so fun because he's literally so relatable to me, since i'm extremely lazy, and he is as well! also, i just need to say that they really did him justice in the anime like whew...ahem...aNYWAYS hope you enjoy these!!
Tumblr media
❧ masterlist
--
✗ this man will always be using you as his shield against liang and upa, because he knows that they would never be able to hit you.
✗ “(y/n), please help me, they’re bullying me again.” “qi!! you can’t run to (y/n)-san all the time for your problems! be a man!!”
✗ he’ll encourage you to come hang out with him and skip training, but upa and liang will tell you that should train your body for any future events. if you choose to train, he’ll be so mopey, and will pretend that he’s not ever going to talk to you again because he feels betrayed. if you choose to slack off with him, upa and liang will merely sigh, and mutter to each other about how guys are probably meant for each other.
✗ if you ever ask him about any sort of plants, he will literally be able to talk for hours and hours about all sorts of cool things that one could do with plants. he’s also really happy that you asked him about what he’s passionate about, since nobody had ever really done that before. he’ll remember it, and will ask you a lot about what your passions are, (because he wants to see your eyes light up, but also because he loves to hear the sound of your voice).
✗ he’ll try to get you to convince upa to let him water his cactus, and upa agrees to only have you be able to touch the cactus directly. you failed your mission partner.
✗ run your fingers through his hair, he literally loves it so much, and will untie his hair for this specific moment.
✗ qi will sometimes take his glasses and put them on you entirely for the reason that you get so suddenly confused, (if you wear glasses he’ll snatch yours and replace them with his).
✗ dude will literally use up all of his energy for the day to tackle you if he feels like you’re pushing yourself too much with training. he’s a lazy person, but he’s fairly strong because upa and liang have made him train in the past, so his grip on you is probably a lot stronger than you might have first expected. (not mentioned: will yeet you back into their cell and ask inori to lock you in there until training was over).
✗ he will not let anybody touch you when you’re sick. he’s the only one that will be taking care of you, since he trusts the power of plants and medicines. he’ll constantly be by your side in the infirmary until you’re better, (otogi will be grumbling about how qi isn’t letting him do his damn job). you’re going to get better really quickly because of how amazing his medicines are, so you’ll only be in bed for 1-2 days.
✗ he’ll teach you how to recognize different medicinal plants in the wild if you ever need it, and will make little drawings of them on flashcards to quiz you.
✗ having qi as a boyfriend can be pretty difficult sometimes, and not because of his annoying habits, but because when it comes to something big, he will always choose to act alone. he doesn’t want to put anybody important to him in danger, so he will only tell you about his reasoning after the fact.
✗ he usually thinks a lot about his past and what he could’ve differently when he’s supposed to be sleeping, so he’ll savor your presence next to you. if you wake up for a moment, he’ll gently pet your hair to lull you back to sleep; he doesn’t want to burden you with his heavy thoughts, so he probably won’t say anything about it at first.
✗ after a while, he might open up to you a bit more about stuff that he’s done in the past. he wasn’t completely transparent with you at first because he was afraid that you would get scared by him and would leave, so he had to take time to accept that it could happen. when he saw that you didn’t care, you gave you a hug, and you could’ve sworn that you felt some wetness on your shoulder where he had buried his face, (he most definitely cried a bit).
✗ he’s pretty chill with pda, so the two of you will do “couple stuff”, (whatever that’s supposed to mean) but it won’t get to the point where it’s uncomfortable for others to watch, (upa will complain no matter what, so there’s really no helping that). he’ll probably keep an arm around your waist or your shoulders, or give you kisses on the top of your head.
✗ he’s a bit difficult to get flustered when it comes to physical looks, (i mean, he does read 18+ magazines with inori LMFAO) but if you brush your lips right near the shell of his ear and whisper something to him, (it could literally be a deez nuts joke) man will literally burst out in red, and walk away because he needs to take a walk.
✗ you’ll probably yell at him and inori more than a couple times for reading those mf porno magazines.
✗ you will get questioned a lot by upa and liang about your relationship with qi, and “how are you able to put up with that trash?” (you know they don’t actually mean it).
✗ qi will always be telling you about how you need to be careful around other guys, because you never know what they could be up to, (even though he’s literally a guy himself like??). because of this, he’ll be fairly protective of you whenever you guys are around people who he doesn’t know, but when you’re just around the guys from building 13 or the guy from building 4, he trusts that they’re good people, (jyugo, uno, rock, nico, musashi). he also trusts you, and knows that you wouldn’t do something like flirt with somebody else while you’re in a relationship, although he will step in and play the “super scary and intimidating chemist who will kill you with poison” card if he sees somebody bothering you.

ahh it feels so refreshing to be writing consistently after not writing for such a long time ^^

Leaving The Party [Joukai Fanfiction] - Joukai Week 2022 Day 5
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! Rating: M* Prompt: Truth/Dare Summary: they have a “public decency” rule for drinking games. It doesn’t mean things can’t get out of hand in different ways, or in different places. Warnings: copious amounts of alcohol Length: ca. 3.000 words
*It gets spicy but it’s not smut. See my comments at the end.
Tumblr media
King’s game was absolutely fucking stupid, and only a bunch of children or drunkards would agree to play. It made sense that it was happening then, for this was already the second party of the night, and they had all been spending more money on booze than food. It worsened matters how, after many years of trying, Kaiba had finally become a regular thanks to Yuugi’s insistence and endless reassurance. These were good news, sure, up until the point where it meant there was now someone in their group who didn’t flinch when something was put on his tab.
Speaking of him, was he doing fine? He seemed…
They had all taken bets a long time ago about what Kaiba was like when he went a little hard on the alcohol. Yuugi thought he’d get chatty because he usually didn’t say much. Anzu said that he had a lot of issues, so maybe he’d be more of the sad type. Honda said it would be Peak Comedy Night if he was the kind to laugh at anything. Otogi had said he came off as repressed and that he wouldn’t be surprised if he started hitting on someone. Bakura was already hungry again worried he’d find competition for the food. Mai wasn’t around, and she didn’t bet, but she’d said she wanted pictures. Jounouchi had bet they’d be getting into a fight the first time it had happened.
Nobody had bet on him getting sleepy before he could actually get drunk. And since he didn’t want to stay anymore (because he needed his bed) and since Jounouchi didn’t want to either (because he wasn’t a fan of seeing people get even more wasted) they had ended up leaving together.
As it turned out, Kaiba was also great for not having to worry about the way back home. Jounouchi had somehow managed to get a fist bump out of him that first time, in the back of a car. He didn’t remember the details. Just because he hadn’t been drunk, it didn’t mean he hadn’t been more than a little buzzed.
And what would you know? Kaiba was falling asleep, as usual. It looked like it wouldn’t be too long until they called it a night. Jounouchi had to elbow him in the ribs whenever he looked too close to his shoulder.
“Wake up.”
“… ’m not asleep…”
“Like hell, you’re not.”
“What, is he done already? We’re not even halfway through.” Honda said.
“Give him a break. He’s trying his best,” Jounouchi said, and he got pushed to the side by Kaiba for his defense that also happened to offend. He giggled in response.
They began to draw sticks soon again. He had to tell Kaiba to pay attention. He definitely looked like they were done for today, but Mokuba would kill him if he let his older brother return in too bad a state. They’d have to endure at least one more round of the game.
“Waitress! Can we get a glass of water?” He called out as he picked a stick with the number four. He swallowed.
“Stop nannying me,” he heard from beside him.
“Oh, you would know about that, right bocchan? What number did you get?”
“I was never called that. And I’m not telling you.”
He took a bite of meat from the grill in the center of the table, just as Otogi pronounced himself king. One problem with that was that Otogi was the asshole king after three glasses, and he’d had four. That was too many number fours for Jounouchi’s comfort. They had eight people at the table too. That was twice the fours.
He shook his head. It was time to stop drinking.
“Otogi, keep it sane,” someone interjected. He wasn’t sure who, but he seconded it. They were a group of friends. Making things awkward between friends didn’t seem like the way to go. Neither was messing with the concept of public decency.
“Sure, sure. Whoever got number four” —he knew it, he knew these many fours were bad— “pour your drink over number eight’s head. And do it slowly.”
That was just mean.
“Dude, I bought this with my money!”
Kaiba straightened out, suddenly a lot more awake than before.
“You’re dead to me, Otogi,” he said.
The table went nuts. There was screaming, someone slammed the table repeatedly, a glass was knocked off. From another table, some guy yelled at them to shut the fuck up, which most of them did with nervous or expectant laughter.
“The King’s orders are—”
“Absolute, yeah, yeah…” Jounouchi interrupted.
He wasn’t sure. They could use the “we’re leaving” excuse. But neither he nor Kaiba wanted to end the night being the ones who ran away.
“Get it over with, I don’t care.”
He totally did, though.
“Apologies in advance…”
He lifted his glass. This was goodbye to his lager. Kaiba kept his eyes closed, his fingers gripping the border of the seat, his legs in a position that revealed that he was ready to get up and leave the table once it was done. His eyebrow twitched as he looked from behind his eyelashes. Hurry up, he seemed to be saying.
Without any pomp or ceremony, Jounouchi poured the content of the glass over Kaiba’s head. The rest of the table reacted in every possible way: with laughter, both amused and nervous, upset at Otogi, with expressions of secondhand embarrassment, and in one case, not at all. Jounouchi felt all of it as well. This was probably too much. He didn’t like doing this. Had this happened months ago, he would have been ecstatic, but not anymore. It kind of hurt now.
The glass was completely vertical.
“Done,” he announced.
Kaiba immediately stood up, wobbling just a little, and grabbed his jacket. He pointed at Otogi.
“You’re paying your own drinks tonight.”
He turned away and clumsily walked towards the bathroom. Jounouchi stood up as well, also just now feeling the weight of the alcohol in his feet.
“W-wait!”
Leaving a mess of comments behind, he followed Kaiba, who by the time he got there, already had put his head under the running faucet.
“Your shirt. Before it drips further down. I’ll wash it.”
Taking his head out of the sink, Kaiba squeezed some water out of his har.
“How am I supposed to dry it?”
“The hand dryers. It’ll take a while, but leave it to me.”
Grabbing it from the back of his neck, Kaiba took it off and plunged it into the sink. It was a little too late. Some of the beer had found a way on his side, down to his thigh. At least it wasn’t denim. The fabric looked thin.
“Go into a stall and take those off too, I’ll handle it.”
Kaiba almost sent the door of the stall flying with how harshly he opened it.
“I appreciate it.”
He caught the pair of trousers midair and got to work. As he did, he could see Kaiba in the mirror, peering over the door of the stall, with his jacket covering his shoulders.
This was the first time he’d seen Kaiba this uncovered. He didn’t seem to mind it. He shook away a mental image that had been probably summoned in part thanks to the beer he was still processing.
Still, that was dangerous.
“Don’t fall from there.”
“It’ll be fine. Do you think the smell will come off?”
He sniffed the wet cloth. The smell of the booze would most certainly not go away, but the cologne was stronger.
“It won’t be too noticeable.”
“Too noticeable.”
“I mean…”
“Whatever. I didn’t plan to stay for the third party anyway.”
Someone entered the bathroom. Kaiba jumped down from his vantage point.
“Hey, Jounouchi,” Honda called, not fully stepping into the bathroom, only enough to get a look at the situation. “We’re leaving for the next place. Do you think you’ll be…? Where’s Kaiba?”
He felt a sense of responsibility over this. This might have been Honda, Jounouchi’s old buddy from middle school, but he wasn’t Kaiba’s, and he doubted it was right to involve him.
“Do I think I’ll be what?”
“Too long. Did he already leave? Did he have a change of clothes or something?”
At least Honda was too tipsy to realize who’s clothes Jounouchi was wringing.
“Uh, let’s see. I can catch up with you. Where are you guys going now?”
“Haven’t decided yet. But we can wait for you.”
“Nah, don’t worry. I’ll call you when I’m done and I’ll get there.”
“Cool. Did you bring anything with you?”
“Just what’s in my pockets.”
Alright. I’ll see you there, then.”
He would not.
Jounouchi went to dry the fabric. The noise from the dryer was too loud and they were too inebriated and overwhelmed by the volume of it to hold a conversation from such a distance. Between breaks, they exchanged a few words.
“You’re going to the third, then?”
“That was a lie.”
It took a while for the trousers to dry. In the meantime, whenever there was a break, they exchanged a few words. Did Jounouchi want a ride home? Of course, he did, what kind of stupid question was that. Taxis were expensive. Did Kaiba need the shirt, or could he make do with the jacket? The pants were taking long enough. The jacket would do. Kaiba felt like his hair reeked, and it would. Water alone wasn’t going to wash it. Could they stop by Jounouchi’s place?
He paused at that.
“Why?”
“You poured beer on my head. I feel entitled to a shower.”
“It wasn’t my idea,” he shot back. “But sure, suit yourself. I don’t mind.”
No admission that he was a little nervous about the idea.
His apartment was a mess. He hadn’t expected to return with anyone that night. The pile of jackets he’d left on the table as he was picking one for the night was right there, front and center, and his shoes were scattered all over the place. He hadn’t done any dishes. The window was still wide open, and the entire place wasn’t much warmer than the street had been. Good thing this wasn’t a hookup situation. He didn’t care for impressing Kaiba. It was probably impossible to do anyway.
Right. He wasn’t about to get his hopes up.
“Bathroom’s over there. Leave your clothes in the basket by the door and I’ll take care of them. Imma go find you some threads to wear in the meantime. You can take a bath if you want, too.”
Kaiba appeared to be slowing down. He dragged his feet. It was no surprise. The exciting part of the King’s orders was already over. Now they dealt with the aftermath.
When Jounouchi went to grab the basket, he figured that, actually, this was kind of embarrassing. He could be a creep about it, but out of respect, he wasn’t. With beer clothes in the washing machine, clean ones in the bathroom, and Kaiba in the shower, he turned the TV on, set it to RCA, and started an RPG.
The offer to take a bath wasn’t taken. Kaiba was back soon with a towel over his shoulders.
“Was the shower any good?”
Kaiba hummed and then sat on the couch. Jounouchi turned around to look at him.
“You didn’t dry your hair.”
“It stinks of honey and chamomille now.”
He playfully pushed Kaiba aside.
“Don’t insult my choice of products.”
“It’s going to raise suspicion.”
“Of what? You think anybody’s gonna think twice about you coming here after what happened?”
Kaiba was getting comfortable on the couch. Jounouchi was surprised that the sweatpants and shirt fit him. A little short on the arms, but it looked intentional. The neckline was a little low. He swallowed.
“It won’t last that long.” He went on. “It’s cheap stuff. Do you want a blanket by the way? I’d turn on the heating, but it’s broken.”
“In the middle of winter?”
“It’s been broken since last year. The landlord won’t fucking fix it and I got tired of asking.”
“You still sound bitter about it.”
“I’m cold about it… I’m gonna go get those blankets, hold on.”
While looking for them in the closet, it had occurred to him that he hadn’t offered Kaiba anything to eat or drink. All he had was tea. Coffee this late was bad. There was some beer in the fridge, but maybe that was a bad idea? This wasn’t a separate third party now, was it?
When he returned, Kaiba hand claimed the remote and the entirety of the couch. Not just that. He was messing with his party setup.
“Put that controller down. That’s my save.”
“I know it’s your save, but it pisses me off. You’re supposed to junction fire to strength.”
“I use elemental spells with her. I don’t want a debuff every time I do.”
“She’s the worst character for spells.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s Zell.”
“Zell has MVP status. Don’t you dare insult him.”
“Does it matter? It’s pretty customizable,” he said, handing Kaiba one of the blankets. “Do you want something to drink? I have tea.”
“Not in the mood for it.”
He was extremely focused on the game. At this rate, he wasn’t going to leave soon, and Jounouchi wasn’t going to get sleep until it got pretty late. He thought about it. They could keep going. It was impossible to know how this was going to end up if they kept drinking. Hopefully not with them passing out.
They could always stop if they overdid it a little.
“More booze? I have a twelve-pack of beer in the fridge.”
Kaiba looked at him.
“I thought you weren’t a heavy drinker.”
“It was a present.” He looked at the screen. “Thanks for ruining my save, by the way.”
“I’ve improved it. And I’ll accept the drinks.”
The washing machine beeped. He ran to take the clothes out and put them in the dryer. Only about ten more minutes, in theory.
An hour had gone by, in reality. Jounouchi never regained control of the game, and he didn’t want to. He was happy to drink, happy to watch Kaiba play, happy to see him start messing up his favorite character Limit Breaks a little more after every sip, and more than happy to be a little shit about it.
“You can set it to auto, y’know.”
Kaiba also seemed happy to be there, pressing the wrong buttons and all.
“Oh, fuck right off, like I’d stoop so low,” Kaiba replied, taking it surprisingly well that he’d ruined the combo again. “I still have Aura. It’ll work next time.”
Which it did, but he also failed it the one after that, which evened things out.
“We’re gonna be here a while,” Jounouchi teased.
“Oh, sure. Can you do it faster?”
With a grin and a thumbs-up, Jounouchi replied.
“In two turns.”
Kaiba reset the game and handed him the controller back.
“Go for it, then.”
He really could, if he was lucky. Kaiba scoffed at his party members, and question how he barely prepared for the encounter. But he had to know what Jounouchi was planning. There was one way to end this fight with only two actions. It was a one-hit-kill that relied entirely on luck.
Jounouchi got it right on the first try. He was about to celebrate it when Kaiba pushed his head down.
“That doesn’t count!”
“No, no! It does! You were using Limit Breaks too!”
Fed up by the laughter, one of the neighbors hit the wall three times and told them to shut the fuck up.
“You and your paper-thin walls,”
“Sorry, sorry…”
“It’s cheating.”
“It’s a feature.”
“Give me that back,” Kaiba said, stretching his hand out for the controller again.
Having fun with an old RPG in this company was not how he had expected the night to go, but damn if he wasn’t glad. What cold? He didn’t feel it. Kaiba was supposed to be home? Why? Mokuba was asleep anyway, who was going to notice he wasn’t there yet? For all everyone knew, they were still hanging out with the rest of the group.
He threw his head back, feeling content. This was alright. He opened his eyes, to see Kaiba’s face as he did his best to overcome the dizziness and focus on what was happening on screen.
Visibly about as inebriated as Jounouchi was, his guest blinked slowly. His reactions came through for once. There was an emotion when things happened. That was nice to see. Jounouchi was glad he’d found out. And it made him want to see more.
Did he dare be truthful about what he’d been secretly hoping would happen since they got here? He felt warm from the alcohol. Encouraged. All it took was Kaiba biting his lower lip in frustration, and moderation was a thing of the past. He didn’t care that his eyes were already essentially undressing who had beside him.
“Hey. King’s Game round two.”
“Again with that? It’s just the two of us.”
“I don’t care. I got the King stick.”
“I don’t see it.”
“You have to believe in it.”
An explanation didn’t seem necessary. Kaiba took in his gaze and understood it. They could see it. They could smell it in their breaths, feel it where their hair tickled against each other. He paused the game.
“Alright. What’s the order?”
Jounouchi leaned in and whispered into Kaiba’s ear. It was crass, it was vulgar, and if it earned him something terrible in response then too bad. Kaiba had asked. Jounouchi wanted it out of his system, all of it. All the things he wanted to do, for how long he’d been wanting to, what he thought it would be like, how he wanted to finish, what he’d love to see the most, how many times. Each little description elicited something: a little bemused laugh, a shudder, an appreciative hum.
Absolutely amazing. If this worked, he’d do it again in the future, if only for the honest reactions.
“That alright with you?”
Kaiba’s eyes were full to the brim with some of the dirtiest promises he had yet to hear.
“I could add a few things, but for now, it sounds good.”
Tumblr media
OK, look. I touch on mature themes a lot on this blog, but smut is not something I want here. This isn’t a family friendly place by any means, but some of my irl friends have this url, and... no. There’s things they don’t need to know about.
This one goes on a bit longer. The full version will be up eventually, but for now, I need to keep going. I can’t stop by AO3 right now. It’d take me like two whole hours to do that; I’m that slow doing anything in there.
Yes, they’re playing Final Fantasy VIII. I love Zell’s stupid DPS ass. That was 100% self-indulgence. Fight me.

First Lines Tagging Meme
I'M SO HAPPY TO BE TAGGED IN THIS TWICE!  Thank you @ink-flavored and @clyde-side !! (I almost just did this on my own too because I love babbling about my own fics...)
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line.
Now pinned and under a cut because it became a really long, really good introduction to me and my stories!
Hello!
Unnecessary and overly wordy introduction/personal musings: I love opening lines so much. When I worked at a bookstore, I used to open books and hardcore judge them on their first lines. I had barely any free time to read at that point so if it didn’t grab me in the first line or two, I put it back. The first Harry Potter book is actually in my pile of really good openers. “Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.” (Subtle alliteration, HELLO??) So I'm super excited to see if my own first lines come even close to the standards that I apply to other people lol. MY OWN MONEY IS ON NO. I have the feeling that I'm so frantic trying to get the story down on paper before the good words disappear from my head that I'm not actually paying attention to the first line. BUT LET'S SEE, SHALL WE.
So just straight up going backwards, I've written and posted TWO BRAND NEW THINGS after being away from fandom almost entirely for 10+ years! They're drabble length but they're shiny and new! <3 (All available fics are linked!)
1. Tango:
She teaches them to dance so that they can dance with her but when Atem gets that mischievous smirk on his face and pulls Yugi into his arms, their bodies spark and the dance floor smolders at their heels.
(The fic is so short that this is a full 1/5 of it but actually, I think I crammed all the good stuff right into that first line. This already might be my favorite. Like it says there in the line itself, Puzzleshipping.)
2. No Betting:
Anzu sat at the kitchen table writing carefully calculated answers onto sticky notes before attaching them to a fourth-grade math worksheet.
(Peachshipping! This one doesn't pop off until about line five so here's the rest of that bit:)
She had the same arrangement with her spouse as most parents had. When the kids were good they were hers. When they were bad, they were his. And when they were winning at games because they picked up rules with uncanny speed and read their opponents with more insight than ought to be available to a child, they were definitely, definitely his.
3. If you wanted honesty that's all you had to say (working title):
When he realized that the figure sitting under the game shop display window and smoking wasn’t Ryou, the physical body response was as though it had discovered a coiled snake not two feet away.
(This one! It's a NEW half finished(?) WIP. I actually started this one before the drabbles but wanted to finish before posting it. Then it got out of hand, then work got out of hand, then I started a couple more projects and well. I keep putting words on it though and eventually there will be a Kleptoshipper that turns into Puzzle and Tender for your reading enjoyment. Also, fair warning - don't use song lyrics as a working title. Every time I look at the document I get the song stuck in my head.)
Now we have polished up reposts of old stories for their move to AO3, where I'll basically keep my master archive. Not full re-writes but I fixed a bunch of typos and awkward sentences and they're much stronger for it. Most of these are from a pairings contest way back when so LOTS of different pairings and lots of AUs!
4. Human:
It was like a bad noir, the thought crossed both of their minds.
(Scifi AU, Rivalshipping. That one's not bad for a first line. Actually no link at the time of writing cause the re-edit is going up in like, a half hour? an hour? a half day? It's my next project after finishing this, finishing up the edit and posting it on AO3. Now with link!)
5. Blood:
Fingers through midnight black hair, whispers in his ear, touches that sizzled along the skin, awakening nerves and senses.
(Dungeonshipping, Pegasus x Otogi, vampires AU. Oh that’s a nice first line! <3)
6. Crazy for You:
The keys are too large and too heavy for the doctor more used to more modern facilities but she doesn't say anything, just follows the orderly as he pulls the large door open.
(Manipulashipping, Anzu x Marik, Psychward AU. Still one of my favorites from that era. Big bold warning though, THIS ONE CONTAINS NON-CON)
7. Finality:
“What are you doing here?”
“Saying goodbye.” Bakura’s translucent arms swept across the graveyard. “Is this not an appropriate place for it?”
(First two or so bits of dialogue as the first first is a generic question. You can tell this is one of the really old ones just by that but it's a sweet, sad little Tendershipper that still has a special place in my heart.)
8. Pieces of You:
Glitter caught the light, leaving shimmering trails in the air as it got everywhere.
(Glittershipping, Anzu x Kisara. Another one that's special to me. Kisara is my girl and my first writing muse. <3)
9. Cambodia:
“It was summer of fifty three...”
“Wait a minute, wait a minute, it can't have been fifty three. You might be that ancient but I'm not. It must have been sixty three.”
(Jiishipping. Yes. Sugoroku x Arthur. HEY, IT CAME UP IN THE RANDOM DRAW FOR THE SHIPPING CONTEST OK. And my writer's brain hasn't backed down from a challenge yet... Another one that takes 4 lines to pop off but it's a good start. Actually, here's the rest of the bit just because I cannot get enough of these two bickering:)
“What do you mean it must have been sixty three? You don't even know what story I'm trying to tell.”
“Am I in it?”
“What?”
“So you're deaf now as well as daft? AM I IN IT?”
“Of course you're in it, y'old coot. Don't know why I'd tell a story without you in it when both grandkids are sitting here.”
10. Coffee and Cigarettes:
"Cigarettes and coffee? That's not a very healthy lunch."
Mana crossed her legs and took a refined sip of her own coffee even as her company was not.
(Mischiefshipping, Mana x Thief King Bakura. Oh this one I'm actually sad that it doesn't immediately sparkle in the first line cause it's one of my absolute favorites of everything I've written. And I think it's the only time I've ever written Mana but I LOVED IT AND HER. Oh no! I lied, I've written her at least one other time though I don't think that one quite captures her sheer chaos energy like this one does.)
11. A Million Missed Chances:
Somewhere along the line, someone made a choice.
(This one. THIS ONE. I think this is by far the most epic idea I've tackled. I still don't know if the sheer scale of the thing came across in the actual fic but in my head it was massive and I remember pounding away at my teeny tiny laptop late at night because the whole thing hit me maybe a day or so before the story was due for the pairings contest. We only had a week to write each fic and my really good ideas never came to me before the very last minute. T.T Conquestshipping, Mai x Valon.)
12. A Fear of Falling:
She drove.
Like she always did when something bothered her.
(Oh the first chapter on this is also one of the really ancient ones. Like one of the very first things I wrote. That first chapter really shows its age and is a little shaky but the others are better and the last one is what fits into the chorological order here. Polarshipping, Jou x Mai. One of my very first ships. Probably THE first actually <3)
13. What Our Creators Make Us:
"Well, well." The match flared, scattering dark shadows until it was blown out and the only light that remained was the red glow from the cigarette end. "I didn't think I'd ever see you again."
(Psychoshipping, Marik x Spirit of the Ring Bakura. With a bit of Bronze, Angst and Tender in the follow up. Old but I'm ridiculously proud of it, hence it's place in the master archive. Ahaha you can tell how old it is though by how clever I think I am. I thought it was funny to make my audience figure out who was talking and not reveal the characters for a good fourth to third of the fic. Ahhhhhhh. Sorry about past me.)
14. A Revolution of the Spirit:
It wasn't fair.  It just wasn't.
That they were close was understandable (you don't get much closer than sharing headspace) but that even now, after deals were made with gods, endless arguments, compromises and the ultimate guilt trip that he had only been a teenager when he willingly sacrificed himself for all of humanity, things she had only half seen and only partly understood even though they had all been there to witness, that even now Atem continued to invade Yugi's personal space as though he belonged there got on her nerves.
(Woah Nelly! That third sentence should probably be three, four and five. Even if I just split it in half we'd continue the pattern of things popping off in the fourth line. I think that's one pattern that's emerging! A really good bit takes me about four lines to set up and deliver! Oh, the challenge was Revolutionshipping, Anzu x Atem, but the fic is actually Spiritshipping, Anzu x Yugi x Atem.)
So confession time, I haven't been out of fandom completely, I just hadn't written my own standalone stories in a very long time. There are a few (ok ok more than a few) long-running rps that @miss-moberg and I have been adding to on and off over the years. I can't resist throwing in a couple of these.
15. Cafe!
The door shut behind them with the soft click of the latch and the exhale of a breath long held.
(This opening line was from December of 2020 when we rebooted a very old Prideshipper and that is a damn good opening line if I do say so myself. I can definitely see the difference now between the newer works and the older ones. I've gotten better, she's matched me pace for pace and eventually something will be finished, I'll work up the courage to ask permission to post it and the whole internet will get to see how brilliant the two of us are together.)
16. Treasure Hunt!
"Ryou, I think you're going to regret letting me tag along on your adventuring this time."  Yugi didn't bother turning away from the airplane's tiny window to see if his seatmate was paying attention.  He was more thinking out loud with his friend playing the role of a convenient sounding board.  "Because I think this trip is the only thing I'm going to talk about ever again."
(One more from RP because it's got that fun, four line punch that we've discovered is a pattern for me! Opening entry is from 2017.)
Also, in truth, my count is a little off when I say I'd been out of fandom 10+ years. I've been away from YGO for that long but I did spend a brief stint in Homestuck where I read a ton of fanfic, flirted with a couple group RPs and even wrote a tiny bit. 9 years without writing a new fic isn't as impressive as saying ‘over a decade’ but it is a little more accurate.
17. What You Will:
In the land of fair Illyria, along a small, sandy stretch of its rocky shore, a ship has come to ruin and one lone woman lies still as death among broken wood.
(The beginning of a Homestuck/Twelfth Night crossover that I'm still determined to work more on someday. It's only got a single chapter but it's magic though now I'm concerned about not being able to recapture that. Not a bad first line though. The style is so different it took me reading it a couple times before going, oh yeeeeeah, that's pretty good!)
18. Relentless:
You pull him to the deck and then across it by the remains of his shirt. Let him say one last goodbye. His ship pillaged, his crew murdered, his hands bound behind his back and at your mercy.
Funny word, that. Mercy.
(The first line is pretty decent but there's that four line combo again! Five but I could basically fix that with a comma. Featuring the troll ancestors Mindfang and Dualscar because every time Hussey introduced new characters they were instantly my favorite.)
19. Black:
There is dark and there is dark and there is dark and then there is black. She is black. Licorice and coal. She is hate and resentment and everything that tastes bitter, the kind of black that coats the tongue like oil, drips down the back of the throat and keeps going.
(Oh wow. Am I allowed to say that about my own work? A Terezi/Vriska drabble that I'm putting as much here as I think I can get away with because it's so good that it fucks me up a little going back and reading it.)
And here it gets tricky because I think the more recent of the old, old fics are in the Drabbles and Shorts collection on ff.net and I can't see a post date. So I'll just pick a good one to end on.
20. Two Princes:
It was inevitable as the rising of Ra's chariot after a long night, as the flooding of the river banks every spring, and Atem always knew that Yugi's kiss would be as warm and gentle as the evening breeze in the summer that brought relief from the scorching day. It was.
(How about the final honor going to more Puzzle/Blind? This probably has the strongest first line of its era. Actually I'm not sure when it was written. It was just hanging out in my writing folder and, thinking about it, I probably wrote it when I was fading from fandom the first time around but still trying to hang in there. No wait! That’s too sad, we can’t end on that! Lets add one more to the list for the sake of personal narrative!)
21. Linger:
The world doesn't need him anymore. It doesn't need his sword and it doesn't need his pen.
(A tiny Princess Tutu afterward that I wrote for myself. Nice one-two punch in the opener. Also it rounds out the personal story that accidentally developed here with a line later in the fic, "Words, however, never stray far from a good writer..." Like, wait, stop. Past me, how did you know T.T)
Did that take a sudden emotional turn for anyone else or was that just me. Can I offset that a little with an honorable mention? Let’s do that while I collect myself. Here’s one more.
Honorable mention: Ryou and the Thief
There was a storm gathering and too much magic in the air. Much more than occurred naturally and magic at this level was never a good thing.
(I can’t have a list of things I’ve written without having Ryou and the Thief on it. If you click on this one though, BEWARE, it’s old, it’s silly and it has a ton of explicit gay sex that… would be written very differently if we were handling it today I’m sure! This is the first RP @miss-moberg and I ever did together and our excuse to Gemship and Puzzleship turned into us running the boys through a whole adventure based on the Osiris myth. It’s the longest thing I’ve ever completed and I’d still consider it kind of my legacy.)
And that’s the last 21(+1!) stories that I’ve written!
The clear winner of best first line for me is 15. Cafe! It’s short, elegant and manages to contain a whole mood even without the context of what’s going on and who’s involved. (Spoilers: It’s Seto and Mokuba making an AU escape from Gozoboro.) Close second is Tango, the most recent story. It’s neat to see just how much better I’ve gotten and also really cool to see that even if the first line itself doesn’t contain a punch, it’s usually because there’s a nice, strong idea being set up and delivered in the first four lines (or so). What a pleasant surprise!
AND WOW, this whole tag thing didn't need to be so long! Or personal! Seriously, if you get this tag from me the challenge is only to list the first lines to 20 stories and maybe try to draw one or two conclusions from them. You all thought I was joking when I said I loved talking about my own writing! But actually, I guess it’s fine like this as I ended up using it as a way to re-introduce myself. Like, "Hey, I used to live here a long time ago and oh my god I love what you've done with the place!" Rather than being someone who's just popped up out of nowhere a few weeks ago to creepily bother all your best of the best creators so....
^///^ Hello!
Thanks for letting me ramble!
Tags! I think I've seen most of the authors I follow do this already but on the off chance you haven't been tagged yet: @elexica (checked your blog to see if you'd already done the tag and saw that you're another person returning to writing fanfiction after 10+ years. Same! Hello!!), @danieco, @draconicmaw, @nedjemetsenen (has someone tagged you already?) and two shots in the dark, @miss-moberg and @edmondia (I'm so sorry you two. T.T Please feel free to block me forever.) And please, anyone else who wants to babble about their own writing! Do this, it was so much fun. <3

F, H and I from the Fanfic Ask Meme, please.
Sure, thank you!
F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.
Y'all know me. :v Thanks for giving me an opportunity about my favorite thing again.
I'll go with something from Occult, another fic I'm still pretty proud of.
Otogi was stranded, floating aimlessly through a conversation that had no clear beginning, middle, or end. He couldn’t just walk away. “He’s, um. He’s coming by later. Honda, I mean.”
“Of course he is.” Bakura shoved a tin box of cards back so hard it banged against the wall of the shelf.
“Excuse me?” Otogi stepped back and struggled to keep from raising his own voice. This was not the interaction he expected from one of Yuugi’s crew.
“… never mind,” said Bakura. “It’s nothing.”
“Are you sure? Because if there’s a problem...” Otogi frowned.
Maybe Bakura held a grudge over Yuugi and Jounouchi. He could wrap his head around that, but no one else seemed to care anymore – least of all Yuugi and Jounouchi themselves. Then again, those two would probably befriend the snake that bit them if it only apologized afterward. It was charming.
There was no time to ponder it further. Bakura began to laugh – softly, under his breath, but his body quivered with each burst of it. “Of course there’s a problem,” he said. “There are all kinds of problems.”
Otogi folded his arms. “Could you tell me what they are, then? I thought I’d say hi to a friend of a friend, and suddenly you’re pissed at me.”
“I-” Bakura’s hand flew to his head. He wasn’t laughing anymore. Neither was Otogi. “I’m sorry. I thought I’d try talking to you, but I guess I’m just not in the mood.”
“That much is obvious.” Otogi started for the counter. “I didn’t want to embarrass you before, but… maybe you’d like to know. Honda said he worries about you.”
“Oh.” Bakura pressed the hand into his forehead, digging the heel into his temple. “Sometimes I think he’s the only one that does.”
I really like the awkwardness of this exchange: one only seems to reach out when the other pulls back. They’re never quite in sync. Otogi offers information while Bakura tries to brush off the whole thing. Bakura can’t resist expressing amusement at Otogi suggesting there might be “a” problem, which draws Otogi back in, but Bakura won’t illuminate things any further. Otogi starts to leave, but he can’t quite do it without saying a little more.
Passionate arguments and spry banter are a lot of fun to write, but so is blunt, clumsy grasping.
H: How would you describe your style?
My style, huh...
Zoomed in moments, finite spaces, small pockets of time. Relatively spare prose, fluid dialogue, and the occasional extended metaphor, all interspersed with snatches of sensuality.
Not sensuality as in sex, though (I rarely write explicit fanfic... I save that for my OCs :P). Imo, my skills and instincts for poetry are far more developed than for prose. I write them pretty differently, but this is the one quality I feel crosses over a lot. I tend to connect one sense to another and use language that invokes multiple senses at once. I'd also make a vague guess that I describe sight the least and touch the most.
I: Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?
Hmm, I don't know if I'd call it guilty, since I more or less lack shame, but one is definitely characters falling asleep on each other. I will write and read untold amounts of this.
I guess that also relates to the more general guilty pleasure of furious, self-indulgent projection. :v I have a particularly intimate and complicated relationship with sleep. It’s immensely gratifying, if slightly embarrassing, to pour some of that part of myself into familiar characters. The same could be said for a lot of other topics, like depression, trauma, gender and sexuality struggles, etc.

What are your thoughts on the Serenity/Seto ship from Yu-Gi-Oh? 😊
I would’ve done a fandom ask post for this, but I’m not a fan of this ship, so I’ll just write a quick explanation why.
Tumblr media
To me, Kawai Shizuka (or Serenity Wheeler, in the English dub) is never given the amount of development owed her in the series. At first her characterization starts off very promising – we get to know her as Jounouchi’s adorable, sweet little sister who was separated from him as a kid and so grew up in a much more stable home than he did, but nonetheless loves her older brother with all of her heart and is likewise adored by him, who fights his hardest to get the money needed to make sure she doesn’t lose her eyesight. I’d actually been excited to see her develop and grow further when she became a more regular character in season 2, especially after she got that great moment of saving Jounouchi from drowning, but…yeah, because of the focus on Duel Monsters, she really just sort of stagnated in the background. The most she contributed to the story was moral support for Jounouchi and to be one side of a pretty unappealing love triangle with similarly marginalized characters Otogi and Honda. Although I never disliked Shizuka the way I did Anzu, I still felt like Shizuka really didn’t get the amount of development she deserved, especially compared to her brother. Jounouchi was always such a strong personality, and the show could’ve really developed him and Shizuka as two sides of a coin – two people who suffered a mutual trauma as young children, but were then separated and grew up in two very different worlds. Jounouchi was forced to rely on street smarts and his fists – Shizuka could’ve been forced to plaster on a smile and soldier through that way – and the series could’ve shown that both of them take off their respective masks around each other, as they are each the one person who will always support the other, no matter what. Shizuka could’ve shared some traits with Jounouchi, like a hot temper, while also contrasting him by expressing her anger through passive aggressiveness rather than the more active aggressiveness Jounouchi uses. But instead, because Shizuka isn’t a professional duelist and the series chose to focus so much on the card games that it often neglected any emotional character development that didn’t relate to them, we never got any of that, and so Shizuka never came into her own as a distinct, memorable character the way characters like Yugi, Pegasus, Marik, Mokuba, and most notably Jounouchi did.
Because of my feelings regarding Shizuka’s character development, I can’t ship her with anyone in the series, especially if that character is one of those who got a lot of development, like Mai or Kaiba. Putting her with any of those characters would invariably result in a very lopsided relationship, with Shizuka being too passive in comparison to these stronger personalities. You would either need to write the stronger character as much more lenient and coddling than they would be normally or write Shizuka with a much stronger personality in order for it to work, and since the series canon wouldn’t support either interpretation, both brands of writing would be OOC without a lot of extra character-developing build-up written in. I reason that the main draw for people who ship Shizuka and Kaiba would be imagining Jounouchi getting all hot under the collar about it…but I’m sorry, anger from a third party isn’t much to go on for a romantic relationship. I see no possible chemistry between Shizuka and Kaiba that would justify it, whether in canon or just in their individual personalities. Even with ships that don’t have as much canon material, there is usually a little more to go on. Over time, I’ve developed a real soft spot for post-series rivalshipping (Yugi/Kaiba), for example, because not only do the two have a lot of similar interests and history, but also they have some good contrasting points that could develop both of them into better people, and I feel Kaiba’s character arc of learning to accept help and love from others would be very well capped off by him finding companionship in someone he once considered below him and now sees as a true equal. (This is also part of why I like puppyshipping/violetshipping, a.k.a. Jounouchi/Kaiba, too.)

I have been planning a YGO rewrite that’s so incredibly indulgent and full of things that I wanted to see and explore with the YGO canon and lore. I have so much stuff I wanted to do, but to no surprise to anyone, the main thing I wanted to do was increase the presence and significance of female characters. That isn’t to say that I’ll be cutting out any of the boys (quite the opposite, since I have plans for the lads of YGO in my rewrite as well), but I really wanted to explore the potential that a lot of these ladies could have.
For starters, Anzu Mazaki. I love my girl and I wanted to see her more in the story. She’s fierce, strong, and caring, so she’s getting more love in this rewrite. I’ve toyed with the idea of Anzu being into dueling, too, and I wanted to see her develop as a duelist. She’s still ultimately pursuing her dreams of being a professional dancer, but she’s also dueling because she likes to have fun. She starts to hone her dueling skills, however, since she realizes that there are plenty of dangers she and her friends could face, so it pays to be prepared.
Next up, is Miho Nosaka. Not going with the Toei anime, but instead, the manga personality, where she’s shy. She and Anzu talk a bit when Anzu goes down to the library, and they’re friends, but Miho keeps her distance from the rest of the group because crowds make her nervous. One thing I decided to add for her: she can see and communicate with spirits. She knows about the spirit of the Puzzle, but she senses dark energy around it (since Yami was, y’know, kinda trigger happy with the penalty games and all). She’s also intrigued by Ryou because he also has an item, but she senses that same negative energy and avoids him. She sneaks onto the ship during Duelist Kingdom and follows the group so she can try to learn more about the mysterious Millennium Items. She and Ryou become friends, and make a deal to try to find out stuff about the Millennium items together (since she wants to understand them like he does). She basically helps cover for him when the spirit takes over and she uses her knowledge of the occult to keep him in line when he acts up. She’s... kinda complicated and her morality kinda falls in the gray area in some areas down the line, especially when she and Ryou start to help the spirit of the Ring recover his memories and they learn more about him and the history of the Items.
Also, there’s Mai Kujaku. I didn’t really... change anything with her, to be completely honest, save for the fact that she also plays a part in Millennium World. Also, I kinda... changed some stuff with the Orichalcos. Instead of Mai and the others involved being involved with the rise of the Leviathon, I decided to change them to a secret society of magicians and individuals who wanted to ensure that the Pharaoh never returned or was destroyed (the name for them is the Servants of the Dark One). They’re avid followers of Zorc and Mai ends up getting roped into them while she’s recovering from Battle City. After she turns back to the side of good, however, she works with the others to try to stop Zorc from returning.
Then, there’s Kisara. I know it’s weird for her to be so early in the list, but she’s getting a modern incarnation because I said so. Essentially, she was orphaned at a young age and she developed amnesia. Unbeknownst to her, however, she grew up with a hidden society of Magicians who kept the art of summoning one’s ka alive, but her home was attacked and while fleeing, she was injured and lost her memories in the process. She was young and hadn’t fully mastered the ability to summon her own ka, but it still brews in her. She was found by a local village and they took her in. She didn’t remember her family, but she would have vivid dreams of the world where Duel Spirits (which were born from the ka of Magician’s past) and she started to draw them to try to understand what they were.
During one of his visits to Egypt to learn more about the Shadow Games and gain more information for his development of Duel Monsters, Maximillion Pegasus finds Kisara. He sees her drawings and recognizes them as the creatures on the stone tablets in tombs, and he realizes she has a connection to these creatures. He adopts her to see if he can get more out of her, but ultimately ends up adoring her because of her artistic talent and passion. Although he’s not much older than she is (since he’s not even a full decade older than the rest of the teenage cast), he becomes a father figure to her. She’s the one who designed all of the duel monster cards related to her past life, including the Blue Eyes White Dragon (Pegasus already had designs in mind, but Kisara was insistent upon making them accurate to what she saw in her dreams). When Industrial Illusions and KaibaCorp become partners, she oversaw the integration of her artwork into a digital media. She doesn’t appear until the gang arrives at the castle at Duelist Kingdom, and she becomes a recurring character throughout the rewrite. She ends up moving to Domino City after Duelist Kingdom to work with KaibaCorp at their base of operations and is the representative of Industrial Illusions. She also helps with the Battle City event and takes part in it as a competitor.
Mana is also gonna be in this rewrite, and she’s getting a modern incarnation too (alongside Mahad and the other priests, but shhhh). She also grew up with a society of magicians and she actually grew up with Kisara, as both their families were close. After getting separated and losing her own family to the attacks from the followers of Zorc, she was trained with other orphaned magicians (like the other magician girls, shhh). Mahad, Mana, and the other magicians show up to Domino City after Battle City, when they saw the Shadow Games broadcast and recognized it as dark magic at play. Mana ends up saving Anzu from one of the Servants of the Dark One and then later meets Yugi and the gang through them.
These are some of the bigger ones, but I do intend to include others down the line, like Shizuka, Rebecca, and even some of the moms, too. Mrs. Ishtar, Mrs. Bakura, Mana’s mom, Kisara’s mom, and even Seto’s mom will be making appearances through flashback sequences that reveal that they had more to do with the destinies their children were meant to take part in, alongside many others. There are also gonna be developments for male characters, like the modern incarnations of the priests, Otogi, Honda, and... well OK I’m basically giving everyone character development, OK.

Snippet: Prince Yugi/Bodyguard Atem AU 7 - The Temptation
Sequel to “Another Ball”
For a complete overview check the contents page
If you saw this post you already know about this AU of mine. The title basically says it   all. Prince Yugi, body guard Atem, forbidden love, drama. ;D
Last time we all concluded that Atem is a frickin DUMMY for rejecting Yugi like he did. But luckily someone else is there to cheer him up...
Another alarm for @spiritualpuzzleshipper and @yamisonarbtleh!!
Yugi adjusted the sleeves of his white shirt.
“It feels so strange not wearing two undershirts after all these months”, he said. A maid helped him into a dark blue vest with floral embroidery and buttoned it up.
“If it stays this warm the snow should be melting away within a week or so. Some even say they saw the first crocuses on the palace grounds”, she said.
“Already?”, Yugi said, not sure whether to be sad or happy. While he was looking forward to spring it’d also mean that soon he’d have to leave Dareia, his home country, and travel to Kallias. No specific date had been set yet but he and his mother had agreed that he should be on his way by the beginning of spring.
While the maid tied his cravat knock sounded.
“Yes?”, Yugi said and a servant entered and bowed.
“Excuse me for interrupting, my prince. But I have a message from Royal Protector Sennen. He says he can’t come to your appointment in the library in the evening. He’s not feeling well”, the servant said and his words sent a sting through Yugi’s heart. Atem had been skipping their reading sessions and rides for over two weeks now. Yugi gulped, gritted his teeth and decided that this was the last time Atem rejected him like this.
“Well, I have a message for him too. He doesn’t need to come up with any more excuses because all our regular appointments are from now on cancelled”, he said. Both the servant’s and the maid’s eyes widened. Yugi never used such direct and harsh words, not even with people he disliked.
“I will deliver it, my prince”, the servant said and withdrew. The maid finished the knot and Yugi sat down on a chair, arms crossed, while she helped him into his shoes.
Since the last ball all Atem did was exercise at the gym. He had never been particularly sociable but he had at least spent time with Yugi and a few of the royal guards. Yugi had tried to approach him twice but Atem had mumbled things Yugi had barely understood and upon asking him to repeat himself, he had just walked away. Yugi had hoped that Atem would come around himself but if he decided not to, Yugi had no intentions to be pushed away every day over and over.
Had his request to teach him that special Kallian dance made Atem realise how little he actually cared for Yugi? Had Yugi misinterpreted how much Atem enjoyed their time together over the past three years? Had he guessed that Yugi was in love with him and now things could never return to the way they had been…? The thought gave Yugi a cold shiver.
Once the maid was finished, he checked himself in the mirror, grabbed his notepad and dictionary from a chest of drawers, and left the room. The usual morning scents of tea, bread, and marmalade were still wafting through the corridors as he walked. At least he’d get to spend the morning with Lord Otogi who was the exact opposite from Atem: welcoming, open, and charming.
While the thought of Atem made Yugi want to hide under a blanket, Lord Otogi made him laugh, sometimes even feel warm and fuzzy inside when he gave Yugi another compliment about his beauty or intelligence. He felt lighter already when he approached Lord Otogi’s chambers and saw his red-haired maid waiting for him. She curtseyed.
“Welcome, your highness”, she said with a smile that made her look even more gorgeous. “Please follow me.”
While the rest of the palace still smelled of breakfast, Lord Otogi’s chambers had the usual fresh but sweet fragrance. The maid lead Yugi into the same drawing room as always. Lord Otogi was spreading a map over the low table before the couch. When he saw Yugi he stood up and greeted him with open arms.
“My prince! So good to see you again!”
“It’s only been one day”, Yugi said with a smirk but actually happy about Lord Otogi’s enthusiasm. After placing his notepad and dictionary on the table they touched each other’s upper arms and pecked each other’s cheeks. Yugi enjoyed the Kallian greeting by now, especially the rush of excitement that came with it. The rest of the palace would no doubt be scandalized but it was their little secret…
“What’s today’s lesson?”, Yugi said as they sat down. The maid poured them cups of tea and withdrew.
“I would like to teach you about the different regional dialects of the Kallian language. It can be a rather confusing subject, even for native speakers, but there are a few things you should know”, Lord Otogi said. He began to talk while pointing at Kallias’ different islands but Yugi couldn’t concentrate.
Was Atem exercising as usual? How would he react when he received Yugi’s message? Would he be sad? Angry? Relieved? Had Yugi’s words been too harsh after all…? But if Atem cared about their appointments he’d try to talk to Yugi one of these days! Right…?
“My prince?”, Lord Otogi said and Yugi turned his head. “Is everything all right? You look worried.”
Yugi gulped. Atem always said something similar when Yugi was upset, even if the hints were so subtle no one else picked up on them…
“Yes…well…it’s something personal. I don’t want to burden you with that.”
“I wouldn’t mind. And I can assure you that everything you say will stay between us.”
Yugi chewed on his bottom lip. It would be inappropriate to talk about something private with his teacher. But weren’t they pushing the boundaries of what was appropriate for Dareian standards with every lesson already? Besides, Yugi had no one else he could tell this sort of thing…
“Well…it’s…it’s Atem”, Yugi said and played with his cravat. “He’s acting so different since I’m preparing for my mission in Kallias. He doesn’t even want to spend time with me any more. We used to be so close and all that rejection…it hurts…”
“I see”, Lord Otogi said, leaned back, and crossed his legs. “While I can’t claim to know Atem better than you he strikes me as a rather protective man, which makes him perfect for the position he’s in. But I assume that since you spend most of your time here at the palace he feels rather…useless. Maybe it bothers him so much he doesn’t feel deserving of spending any casual time with you.”
“Y-You don’t think there’s more to it…?”, Yugi said, his voice hardly louder than a whisper.
“What more could there be?”
Yugi looked to the other side.
“I…I don’t know”, he mumbled.
“In any case, I don’t think he has any bad intentions. I’m sure once we leave for Kallias and Atem can do his usual job everything will turn back to normal.”
Back to normal… Did Yugi want that? And if not, what did he want…?
“Don’t look so sad, my prince. Look, spring is almost here. Maybe we can take a ride one of these days and search for crocuses?”, Lord Otogi said.
Oh…yes, that’s a lovely idea”, Yugi said without meaning it.
“I must admit I’m not used to spring coming this early. Is it always like this on the continent?”
“Yes, this is actually pretty nor…” Yugi said but stopped when he turned back to Lord Otogi. He had rolled up his sleeves, taken off his cravat, and opened the first three buttons of his shirt.
“I didn’t know. I should have dressed differently today. But anyway, back to our lesson. About this region…”, Lord Otogi said and bent towards the map. But Yugi couldn’t stop staring. His fingers were digging into his pants, his posture perfectly erect. “Is something wrong, my prince?”
Yugi flinched.
“I…uhm…you know…men here on the continent…we usually don’t show…anything below here”, Yugi said and tapped his neck. Sure, women now and then wore ball gowns that were cut lower but men? Never!
“Really? Then what do you do in summer when it’s really hot?”
“We…uhm…sweat?”, Yugi said with an insecure laugh. His breath stopped and his temperature rose when Lord Otogi placed an arm on the backrest behind him and moved closer.
“Say, is this making you uncomfortable, my prince?”, Lord Otogi whispered and his voice danced down Yugi’s spine.
“W-Well…not uncomfortable…but this is rather…new”, Yugi said, trying to look at Lord Otogi’s face but his eyes kept darting back to the elegant arches of his collar bones.
“I’m afraid you’ll have to get used to it, my prince. When it’s warm in Kallias men wear their shirt open all the time. On particularly hot days some men might not even wear a shirt at all.”
“What?!”, Yugi said, both in shock and fascination.
“But the latter only applies to commoners who have to do hard work. You won’t see so many shirtless nobles”, Lord Otogi said.
“Oh…all right then”, Yugi said, not sure himself if he sounded relieved or disappointed.
“You know, my prince…I wouldn’t mind if you took a closer look in order to get used to the sight. After all, I can’t have you be all distracted and confused should you meet with a Kallian noble on a warm day”, Lord Otogi said and chuckled. Yugi smiled awkwardly and tried not to stare immediately at the area in question. How smooth and silky Lord Otogi’s skin looked…even a small part of his chest was revealed…and under his shirt collar a black line peeked out.
“Is that…a tattoo?”, Yugi said and pointed at it.
“Oh, yes. It is”, Lord Otogi said and tugged on the shirt collar to uncover an ancient symbol.
“Oh!”, Yugi said and added at Lord Otogi’s confused look: “I…I’m pretty sure Atem has the same tattoo at the exact same spot. What a coincidence!”
The last time Yugi had seen it had been in his office when they had talked about the blue, little book. But Yugi had seen it multiple times before when Atem had scratched his neck.
“It’s no coincidence at all, actually”, Lord Otogi said with a smirk and turned back to the map on the low table before them. “I’ll tell you another time. Now back to the lesson, yes?”
Yugi frowned at Lord Otogi’s evasive reply and decided to press for a clear answer at a later point. That idea was forgotten quickly, however.
He found himself unable to resist staring at Lord Otogi’s exposed skin. Lord Otogi didn’t seem to mind at all and just continued with the lesson. Yugi pinched his own arm for his lack of control several times. He had a mission, a mission! But what did a few looks matter…? Yugi’s inner tingled with a type of hunger he didn’t know.
That circle of fascination and restraint continued throughout the other subjects Lord Otogi talked to him about. But whatever Lord Otogi taught him about certain holidays, traditional songs, and the old temples, Yugi didn’t remember any of it. He was either memorizing every spot of Lord Otogi’s neck and chest or scolding himself for trying to do so. After a while, Yugi too felt like his clothes were too warm.
“It seems you’re not all that concentrated today”, Lord Otogi said and closed a book with illustrations of old temples. Yugi looked away and played with a strand of blond hair.
“I-I’m sorry”, he mumbled. Of course his distraction was more than obvious! It could only have been worse of he had been drooling!
“Don’t be. We all have such days. Maybe a more practical lesson would be more suitable?”, he said, stood up, and stretched a hand out to Yugi. “We could practise your dance skills.”
Yugi’s heartbeat quickened at those words. Getting even closer to that alluring body of Lord Otogi? He should decline, say he needed a moment to cool down, resist the temptation! But instead he took Lord Otogi’s hand and rose.
They walked a few steps to the area before the fireplace. Yugi had to suppress a shiver when they got into the starting position, which was almost identical to that on the continent – only much closer. Their upper bodies almost touched.
“Let’s start with the Mirage, shall we?”, Lord Otogi whispered and Yugi could only nod. Even though it was a slow dance Yugi’s breath deepened after a few minutes. He tried to focus on the steps but made many mistakes and apologised several times. His cheeks were burning with shame but Lord Otogi smiled.
“It’s no big deal, my prince. Just focus on me”, he said and Yugi bit his bottom lip to keep himself from saying:
“But that’s the problem…!”
Now the revealed parts of Lord Otogi’s chest and neck were even closer and so were the strong arms that held him. Because of their difference in height Yugi was even on eye level with the naked spots.
His hand clung to Lord Otogi’s shoulder in order not to lose his balance…but wouldn’t it be easy to let his fingers brush over the exposed areas and make it look like an accident…? Would that even be necessary? Would Lord Otogi just let him…no, what indecent thoughts!
Yugi felt dizzy and shaky but he didn’t want to sit down. He had never been this close to another person and never felt this much excitement crawl over his skin. They weren’t even doing the real dance steps any more and just swayed to the left and right.
Yugi didn’t know how but Lord Otogi made him trip but before he could fall Lord Otogi pressed his body against the wall. Yugi’s heart drummed against his chest, his fingers digging into Lord Otogi’s shirt. That helpless gesture of clinging to his only source of balance even revealed more parts of Lord Otogi’s chest and Yugi gasped at the sight.
“Goodness, how clumsy we are today”, Lord Otogi whispered. His forehead almost touched Yugi’s and his black bangs brushed his face. Yugi tried to answer but all words were stuck in his throat.
He had never been this close to that handsome face…those emerald eyes…those beautiful lips… One of them would need to move their head only a little forward…
But before Yugi could think any further, Lord Otogi glanced at the clock on the mantelpiece and said:
“Look at the time. Our lesson is over already.”
“Wh-What?”, Yugi said.
“I know. How quickly time passes when you enjoy yourself”, Lord Otogi said and gently let go of Yugi.
Yugi grabbed onto the mantelpiece in order not to fall. While Yugi was still struggling with standing straight, Lord Otogi grabbed his notepad and dictionary from the low table and handed them to Yugi. They felt a lot heavier than earlier.
“Don’t worry, my prince. We will continue right where we left off”, Lord Otogi said with a wink. “So, would you like to go search for crocuses one of these days? Maybe we could take a ride and you can show me the outer garden? I heard it’s really beautiful.”
“Y-Yes. I’d love to”, Yugi said with a nervous chuckle. “I’ll go check my schedule and tell you when I have time.”
“Wonderful”, Lord Otogi said, placed his hands on Yugi’s upper arms and pecked Yugi’s cheeks. Heat sizzled through his body yet again. Yugi’s knees wobbled when Lord Otogi whispered into his ear: “I’m really looking forward to taking a ride with you.”
Yugi somehow staggered out of Lord Otogi’s chambers, through the corridors and into the royal wing. Yugi closed the door to his bedroom behind himself. Was he having a fever dream? He was feeling hot and dizzy and what just happened couldn’t have been reality.
Maybe Yugi had misunderstood it all! Maybe none of it would be considered inappropriate in Kallias! No, not even in Kallias could it be normal to press another person against the wall and look them in the eyes like that… Unlike Yugi, Lord Otogi had been perfectly secure and relaxed, as if he had done this sort of things a dozen times already.
Yugi’s inner leapt at a realisation. Lord Otogi had done this sort of thing a dozen times already. Maybe even more! Nobles in Kallias didn’t have to wait until marriage to… Goodness, Lord Otogi had already…spent the night with someone! Several people! Lord Otogi had to be an expert on the matter! Surely a night with him would be…
Yugi turned the key behind him, placed his dictionary and notepad on a chest of drawers beside him, and dashed towards his bedside table. In the bottom drawer he found the blue little book.
He sat down on his bed and opened it with trembling fingers. He turned to the third section, which was between men only. He drew a sharp breath at the page he landed on. It showed one man on his back, his legs spread with the other one between them.
He held the book as close to his eyes as possible without the picture becoming blurred. He couldn’t help but grin as he imagined what it’d be like to be the one on the bottom. He lay back, dropped the book, and clumsily opened the buttons of his vest and shirt. His hands ran over his skin, his eyes closed.
If only someone else’s fingers could explore his skin…! His shoulders, chest, stomach… Yugi spread his legs and imagined another man right between them, just like in the illustration… Their naked bodies rubbing against one another… Waking urges in Yugi he thought he didn’t have… Making him feel so hot he believed to be melting…
Yugi’s hand slid inside his pants and he had to bite his lip to suppress a moan. He moved his hips up and down in a way that was so new but felt so natural. Waves of hot and cold swept through him as he squirmed beneath that imaginary man…
Another man…tearing Yugi’s clothes apart in his desire…kissing him everywhere…his neck, jaw, and finally his lips… Yugi would open his eyes and see…
Yugi shot up and almost fell from the bed. He was panting and believed his heart had stopped. He hadn’t seen Lord Otogi’s face in his fantasy. He had seen Atem’s.
Now that he thought about it… He had imagined the skin of other other man darker than Lord Otogi’s. The body had been slim but muscular and Yugi knew few diplomats who were well-trained.
Yugi’s bad conscience made his intestines turn into stone. How dare he include his bodyguard in his sinful dreams?! Surely Atem would be disgusted! The thought of Atem’s revolted face drove any aroused heat out of him like a sudden snowstorm.
Yugi stood up and washed his hands in a bowl of water in a corner. Now he was glad he had cancelled his and Atem’s library appointment earlier. He wouldn’t have been able to look him in the eyes anyway.
Yugi dried his hands with a towel and cursed Lord Otogi for awakening these feelings in him in the first place! But as Yugi buttoned up his shirt and vest he knew he could only blame himself for being so susceptible to Lord Otogi’s advances.
“I am the prince of Dareia”, Yugi said to himself when he was fully dressed again. “That’s the path the gods chose for me and I can’t allow myself to deviate from it. Ever.”
He walked back to the bed and took the blue, little book from a pillow. He had been in perfect control of himself before he had smuggled it into the palace. It was the source of his sinful desires and without it his mind and soul could be clear again. He should burn it or throw it away.
But instead he stuffed it back into the bottom drawer of his bedside table and shut it.
“The gods forgive me”, he mumbled with a heavy heart. “Even though I don’t deserve it…”

FIVE CORPORATE EXECUTIVES ALL WEARING THEIR FRIEND’S BODY AT ONCE LIKE A HORSE COSTUME (they get to take turns being the metaphorical “front half” of the horse)
And we get to watch ANOTHER DUEL wow
The member of the Big Five who “won” Honda’s body (while still losing the duel) is pissed off that these other, slightly more losery losers are here to share his loser-prize
Tumblr media
This wouldn’t be happening if you hadn’t made such terrible choices in literally every aspect of your adult life to this point, just sayin
Yugi bows out to Yami, and Yami’s like, sure, whatever, I’ll fight you all, bring it
And then Jou is like WAIT A MINUTE
Tumblr media
Jou: “Five on one??”
Big Five: “No we’re all just playing, like, as one person who keeps switching”
Jou: “Not fair, I’ll play too, then it’ll be five on TWO”
Big Five: “But then you’ll have two decks and two sets of lifepoints and we’ll only have one! If you each get 4000 LP, we should get 8000!”
Jou: “Fine!”
Yami: “Um Jounouchi? YOU’RE the handicap.”
Tumblr media
Me:
Tumblr media
Yami is actually pleased to duel with Jounouchi, because Yami possesses infinitely more patience than I do. Honestly, I wouldn’t duel these fuckers at ALL, but then I guess Honda would be sad...
Tumblr media
otoh Honda is a grade-A creep, a grade-B idiot, and a grade-D cheerleader at best and how many cheerleaders do we really need for these CARD GAMES anyway....?
Actually Jounouchi is more or less on the same page as me re: Honda being barely worth saving, as he flashes back to the ahem ACTUAL PLOT and the person who’s in danger for reasons that are not her own stupid fault...
Tumblr media
It makes total sense that Jou is thinking about Mai and I’m glad we’re making an effort to remember her, but god, splicing in the real, actually interesting plot in the middle of the Big Five bickering about their STUPID fucking virtual reality kidnapping jape just throws into sharp relief just how low-quality this filler arc is and how it’s really just coasting on the actually interesting shit from Kaiba’s backstory.
Just how low-quality am I talking?
Tumblr media
BOOM knockoff Yami figurine and his Black Magician who IS the shape of a skinny, muscular man in a pointy hat but casts a shadow in the shape of an airplane wing for some reason
Jou chooses Flame Swordsman for his Deck Master, just to make doubly sure this rehash duel dueling the same fucking losers over again is as boringly same-y as possible.
What about the Big Five?
Tumblr media
oooooooof course you will (seriously why did Yami and Jou agree to this??)
So (and sorrynotsorry I do not retain any of the Big Five’s names reliably) The Artist Formerly Known As Seamonkey Fashionmodel goes first and plays Big Fuckin Wave Floods The Whole Area field magic card
Tumblr media
He also plays Legendary Fisherman and I can’t decide if I’m annoyed they just play cards we already know, which is BORING, or if I’m relieved the terminally uncreative writing team didn’t try coming up with new cards here, because they would definitely be half-assed to hell
Then...
Tumblr media
Okay so Seamonkey Fashionmodel has like, half a personality trait (he sometimes, but not always, alludes to historical tactics, that’s like, barely a quirk). Penguinfucker has SO MANY quirks, but lest we forget, one of them is introducing everyone by full name and age!!!
And another one is SEXISM
Tumblr media
THIS! IS! NOT! FUN! THIS! IS! NOT! FUNNY! THIS! IS! NOT! NECESSARY! I! AM! SO! FUCKING! TIRED! OF! FINDING! NEW! WAYS! TO! COMPLAIN! ABOUT! THE! CREEPTASTIC! AND! UNNECESSTACULAR! AND! SEXISTABULOUS! FOCUS! ON! TEENAGE! GIRLS’! BREASTS!
So this sexist creepy shithead is like “Now I will defeat YUGI MUTOU!!! and co I guess” and unexpectedly, Jounouchi snaps
Tumblr media
... well he IS the King of Games and the reigning champion and shit, like, damn son, being overlooked is what you get for entering the same competitive sport as your incredibly gifted friend...
Jounouchi vows to defeat them, which Honda is very much in favour of. Shizuka has graciously granted him the ability to speak again (via the button on the back of his head that he never uses except accidentally?), but his speech is slipping...
Tumblr media
This is pretty hilarious to me because they keep using “ooh” in the subtitles but actually the monkey noises he’s making are like “kiki” (Monkeys in Japanese are descibed as saying uki uki / ウキウキ  or kiki /  キキー)
Jounouchi draws Harpy Lady and Harpy’s Feather Duster and uses them to clear the field of the fucking entire ocean (look at how much water there is in that previous screenshot!!)
Tumblr media
“Who knews that the professional duelist with the well-balanced deck would have such great cards?? These cards are way better than the random gambling cards I rely on! There’s probably a lesson here... Nah.”
Drunk on the heady overconfidence of a single decent move, Jounouchi lunges in for an attack on a face-down card
Tumblr media
says YOU Mr Oh Look A Trap I Better Trigger It To Find Out What It Is
Sure enough, the face down card allows Penguinfucker to return Flood Everything Lol to his hand, and Jounouchi is suitably chastised...
Tumblr media
Yami: “No fucking shit.”
Penguinfucker takes this opportunity to gloat and the writers take their own opportunity to underline that yes, Penguinfucker does know what age these teenagers are and does acknowledge that they are yet children, so all his creepery on the girls is 100% knowing. He says children like them...
Tumblr media
idk buddy if you’re really such an intelligent adult how come you don’t have a physical form to inhabit that’s adulting 101 right there
Anyway, Yami isn’t having any of it...
Tumblr media
whaaaaat
Tumblr media
WHAAAAAAT
Tumblr media
THE TENSION. SHE IS UNBELIEVABLE. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BELIEVE HOW TENSE THIS CARD GAME IS. DO YOU KNOW WHY?? WHY DOES OTOGI BELIEVE THAT THE TENSION IS BEYOND BELIEF???
because no one has lost a single fucking life point yet.

On Animation
Tumblr media
These are mostly some personal views and experiences, you are welcome to read but don’t hold high expectations. In the last 2 years or so I didn’t watch as much anime as I used to, probably because I don’t find anime as entertaining as before. My interest in sakuga and Japanese animators was the first time I found value in animation itself, regardless of other aspects such as the story. The sheer expressive power of Ohira’s drawings, or Kanada’s unique timing, all brought me joy and still do.
Yet even this joy I find in sakuga won’t last forever, and I can say that rarely does any scene amaze me like my first contact with works from not only legendary animators such as Ohira and Kanada, but even Ebata and Tanaka. I didn’t lose my interest in commercial sakuga that’s for sure, most what I watched lately were obscure shows I wanted to see what X animator or X director did in them. It’s just that I’m looking for something new, and I knowingly didn’t experience basically anything the wide medium of animation has to offer.
I think the majority of anime fans, animation fans in general even, just watch animation because it’s “anime” or maybe “Disney”. If an anime with a somewhat good story and almost still good-drawn images was to be produced, I bet it would gain some following and popularity among non-japanese fans at least. I also bet such a thing already happened. This reminds of a funny phrase I heard from a friend: “people think that animation isn’t important in animation”.
But then, everyone is free to prefer whatever they want in my opinion. I just think that people who have this view don’t see the real merit of animation and its real beauty, to a big extent at least. Works with outstanding stories and fascinating themes such as Ghost in the Shell receive praise mostly due to that aspect only, the story and themes, with maybe mentioning “good and smooth” animation as a side point. But such works exhibit what really makes animation what it is and takes of advantage of the capabilities of this medium, just look at the Hollywood adaptation to compare(regardless of the fundamentally different execution).
Maybe the main approach of commercial animation takes most of the blame here. Ask any random person “what is special about animation?”, and probably the answer would be something along the lines of “unlimited imagination” or “fascinating imaginary worlds”, referring to Disney’s princesses or Ghibli's fantasy. Yet live-action movies are capable of creating such worlds thanks to modern and even kinda old technology(if we ignore the ongoing controversy regarding the definition of these works), while other more realistic animation works such as Satoshi Kon’s show animations’ features and perks, the features that are the reason why he famously prefered to use animation in all his movies despite being more of a live-action director in nature. What I’m trying to say is this: animation isn’t just a container with the sole purpose of conveying a story or a message, nor is the importance solely in the content conveyed, but in the way it’s conveyed. That’s why a lot of people who work in animation refuse the idea of mimicking live-action, for example.
After sakuga my interested shifted towards independent and experimental animation especially the japanese ones, like Koji Nanke and Youji Kuri. The story of independent japanese animators is a long one, better covered here. Watching their works made me realize more and more how diverse animation is, and the different exciting ways to transmit an idea through animation. You may say that everything I said till now was just cretesizing commercial animation and praising independent/experimental animation because I love them, yet I didn’t deny that Ghibli and Disney(2D) movies, which are commercial for sure, are some of the best animation works from a technical and artistic standpoint. What I’m criticizing is the narrow outlook on animation, even among the commercial works. Animation isn’t only hand-drawn or 3D, you have collage and stop-motion and puppets and others. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the former Association of Japanese Animations(AJA) president, the late Kihachiro Kawamoto, never drew anything, he was but an amazing puppet animator. Before Kawamoto was Tezuka, a person who plainly hates commercial mainstream animation and whose experimental works probably outnumber his commercial ones. Kawamoto’s successor, the current president Taku Furukawa, is a renowned independent animator and one of Youji Kuri’s students. Movies such as Isle of Dogs getting a wide positive reception makes me happy.
A famous use of collage was in Madoka Magica’s labyrinths, which Gekidan Inu Curry duo handled. It consists of Shirashi Ayumi(former Gainax) and Anai Yosuke(former defunct studio named Tanto). Their participation in Madoka Magica and many other Shaft shows came probably due to their relation with the director Yukihiro Miyamoto. I went a bit off track, but all this was to say that I enjoy Kihachiro Kawamoto’s collage works especially such as The Trip(1973), although he is better known for his puppet works, that are great nonetheless. This isn’t because I don’t enjoy puppetry, Jiří Trnka amazes me- for example. I bet that his magnum opus, The Hand(1965), would astonish any animation fan not only in its visuals, but in the way it handles and presents its themes as well, which led to banning this movie that obviously opposes the communist occupation of Czech.
Tumblr media
from right to lefr: Madoka Magica, The Trip, Kenju Giga.
Now that I mentioned Czech, it’s one of the richest countries when it comes to animation and animation history. Many other east-european countries as well. Trnka is enough on his own, but even with other animation arts it’s a region that has a rich and old history of experimentation and early works. Tezuka’s inspiration for his short Jumping(1984) came from none other than a hungarian short called The Fly(1980). The animator behind Jumping, Junji Kobayashi, reminds me always of a fun fact about Tezuka. Kobayashi himself has a deep passion for insects and wildlife in general. Alongside being a member of multiple insect societies and organisations, including The Japanese Association for Insects, he wrote a book on how to animate animals based on Mushi/Tezuka Pro's principles. But if there's a bigger insects nerd than him, it's Tezuka, who deliberately added the kanji for insect(虫) in his pen name(same reading to his original name). Tezuka also has some books on insects or animals, in a fictional or realistic depiction. The last book I want to mention, the most interesting probably, is Kobayashi's "Osamu Tezuka That No One Knows - The Mess of Mushi Pro", an interesting title especially when you consider that Kobayashi is one of the oldest Mushi Pro members, having spent about 23 years with Tezuka till his death. Kobayashi joining Mushi Pro in the first place may have been due to Tezuka sharing him his insects passion, as "Mushi" is the same "insect 虫" in Tezuka's pen name after all.
Anyway, what I was trying to say is this: If you are looking for something more than just "brainless fun", try watching different kinds of animation, the world of animation is vast and diverse. Some works that I like(not necessarily a good start for everyone):
Aru Machikado no Monogatari(1962, Mushi Pro)
The first project by Tezuka's Mushi Pro. He tried different styles in this movie, demonstrating his intentions from the beginning. Directed by Eiichi Yamamoto, whose start was in another experimental studio named Otogi Pro, with animators such as Gisaburo Sugii, it is one of the best works the studio produced. It contained a variety of interesting and beautiful styles, even limited animation was used although there is no economical constraint here, what makes me think that it was an experiment before going all limited with Astro Boy later. A great movie overall.
Jumping(1984, Tezuka Pro)
There is a nice interview about this short and experimental works in general with Osamu Tezuka here.
Machikado no Märchen(1984)
The Hand(1965, Jiří Trnka)
Tabi(1973, Kihachiro Kawamoto)
Kenju Giga(1970, Kihachiro Kawamoto)
The Fly(1980, Ferenc Rofusz)

Nanbaka OC Week Day 1: OC Introduction Day!
All credit goes to my close friend @itsdraconia for drawing Naomi’s sprites for me! 💕
I believe some of my followers know about my OC or have read about her already but I realized that I haven’t created a proper post describing her bio so here it is! Enjoy!~
Gender: Female
Name: Naomi Hyakushiki 直美百式
Name meaning: The name Naomi means “above all” or “beauty”, while Hyakushiki means (Hyaku) “Hundred” and (Shiki) “Command”.
However, her name is also a play on the word “Oni”, which is a supernatural demon that appears in Japanese folklore. Most notably, in the story of Momotarō.
Family/Siblings:
Momoko Hyakushiki (older sister);
The Man with the Scar (adoptive father).
Age: 17
Ethnicity: Japanese
Blood type: A
Hair: Azure with a mix of light blue. She has natural wavy hair. She also has two flyaways sticking out from each side of her hair that often annoy her due to the fact that she can never get rid of them no matter which product she uses.
Eyes: Imperial red, with light flecks around the bottom of the iris.
Bust size: 32D (32E in Japan)
Height: 5'4" (163 cm)
Weight: 105 lb. (47 kg)
Date of Birth: April 1
Sign: Aries
Sexuality: Pansexual
Education/Job: She finished high school at the age of 10 and then entered university in Germany. She decided to come back to Japan after “finishing school” and is currently working as Kazari and Okina Otogi’s assistant in Nanba Prison.
Favorite colour(s): Sky blue, Cream, Pearl White and Silver.
Favorite food: Prinsesstårta and Cream puffs.
Hobbies: Playing video games, writing, reading, researching…and all the other hobbies that will help her gain more and more knowledge in different fields. However, she also likes to cook in her free time (but admits that she isn’t that good at it).
Personality: She is a very kind, selfless, determined and compassionate young woman who strives to help anyone in need. Naomi is considered to be a child prodigy as she is incredibly intelligent (enough to even finish high school at the age of 10). She is often seen as an angel in other people’s eyes due to her benevolence and altruism.
However, her cheerful nature hides incredible insecurity and desperation to be considered a good person. She chose a career that helps others for the sole purpose of gaining other people’s esteem to an unhealthy degree. This likely stems from her having been denied the esteem of her parents as a child, as they were strict people who only valued physical strength above all that only her older sister had. In her innermost self however, she is a melancholy, empty shell of a girl. Her kindness is genuine, but tainted by her serious issues.
Love Interest: Jyugo
However, I have considered the possibility that Zakuro has a crush on her, but she's oblivious to his advances.
Curious facts:
※ She is ambidextrous.
※ She is currently fluent in 18 languages.
※ She has a strange habit of cleaning and keeping things in order when she’s feeling anxious.
※ She often stays up late because of her job which messes up her sleep schedule.
※ Playing video games is a big hobby of hers. Most notably, “simulator games" that she and Kazari have created themselves.
※ She has a pale complexion.
※ She is a polymath.
※ She has impressed both Okina and Kazari with her brilliant deduction skills.
※ While she is good at figuring a situation out, she is surprisingly oblivious to the fact that many of the inmates have a crush on her.
※ She is aware of Momoko’s crush on Hajime.
※ She once made Rock a variety of Japanese foods while he was getting better in the infirmary and he immediately took a liking to her cooking.
※ Naomi has a fear of bugs and insects. She finds them utterly disgusting and can’t stand to be in the presence of one.
※ She has a masochistic side.
※ She is a vegetarian.
※ She has a one-sided crush on Kagu-8. However, she considers her more of a friend since she often helps her out in the laboratory.
That’s all for now! I will fully write her backstory later on but that’s something for another day! Thank you for reading and I look forward to seeing everyone else’s OCs as well~ (´∀`)♡
