im unsure how i feel about toa as a series so far but by god does riordans writing amuse me
#trials of apollo#i dont like toa as much as i did hoo because it feels like a slight downgrade#because hoo was such a GRAND STORY that it would be hard to top like they literally schismed the gods. went to rome and greece#to HELL AND BACK#found A MYSTERY OF THE WORLD#and had to defeat the EARTH ITSELF#so toa is like a massive downgrade in scale like apollo is human and he has to overthrow capitalism TT like ok#and i dont find the characters as endearing im mainly talking about meg#shes growing on me but shes not really a character i care so much about#and also the way that hoo was written from multiple perspectives i think riordan really shined#i dont like riordans first person povs as much as i like his third persons#also i feel like the target audience age went down again so that may also be why#the books are a lot shorter and apollo just isnt as endearing as percy jackson yet#who was down to earth and funny despite some of his main graspable personality in the first couple being like haha one liner#i domt like apollo as much esp in his introduction but im sure it was the point#its just that its hard to like a character when you go from like 7 really endearing teens with interesting struggles to like#Literally a Stuck up god who cannot help self flagellating like every 3 words in the first chapter#hopefully i like it better by the end of this one (2nd book) cause i wasnt really into hoo until the end of son of neptune#and mark of athena and house of hades my beloved 🥺#AT LEAST LEOS IN THIS BOOK !!!!

Things I enjoyed about writing my Crocodile/female!OC smut, in no particular order:
If you had to imagine the walking, talking embodiment of all Buggy's insecurities (imo), I feel like you'd get Sir Crocodile, and that's pretty much how I went into writing him. I set out to absolutely maximize Buggy's: "Oh no, her ex is (insert self-deprecating qualifier) than me". You know, tall(er), confident, masculine, accomplished, infamous, intimidating, actually scary, redundantly rich, pretty conventionally attractive and the scar just adds to the sex appeal. He has a voice like that, and no doubt a way with women? He's even near perfected his control over his devil fruit powers! Absolutely aces the whole Bounty Hunting business thing. Rolls in and out the Grand Line like it's his backyard. He's even better at being Disney-levels of evil! Complete with a better villain laugh. How dare. How dare he absolutely nail most of everything Bugs covets? Poor Buggy. The fact that his girlfriend is technically still married to the jackass is just an extra kick in the gut while he's down, tbh. Basically, if Bugs were a piniata, this is currently my stick of choice to go at him with. I just keep finding new aspects for Bugs to be insecure about and it doesn't matter how often Shivs tells him not to worry about it.
As you know, I wrote the whole thing first in three sits, ignoring most of the limb logistics. And then I went in and revoked hand privileges. That sucked? But it was also kind of fun to then try and either make it work with one hand and/or integrate his hook. Some of the instances actually got far better with it: neck pulling, ahoy! is a big one, hitching up clothing for a close second, but also being casually threatening for no apparent reason (and then for a really apparent reason, omg). Croc seems to lean towards preferring to use his hand, and sometimes he misses having two of them for this and I tried to show that. I mean, I get it - hands have tactile sensation. Plus, we wouldn't want to kill her. Not at this point in the timeline.
God tier banter, if I may say so myself. I specifically enjoy writing (sexual) banter, but I feel like I've outdone myself here. Their beats are also pretty even-handed and so well attuned to eachother, like this isn't their first verbal rodeo, this is the end stage mega evolution of years of practise.
The way Shivs walked into her ex's office with the intention of manipulating him with sex, but did so while explicitly and recognisably wearing her current boyfriend's clothes. Balls of steel, this girl. But, she knew who she was confronting. If he turned out at all amenable to her scheme, he'd want her out of these rags stat. And that was five free steps in the direction she was meaning to go. In addition, I am a firm believer of him being a high-key closeted bisexual and we all know what they say when boys excessively pick on you. All it takes is squinting just right and imagining her with a different hair colour, and that just made me chortle. I am probably the whole target audience for this, but yolo.
The way his pet name use corresponds to his emotional headspace, apparently. I wasn't doing this intentionally, but I noticed during editing. He says 'doll' a lot (a grand total of 14 times, jfc), uses it the way guys tend to use 'babe'. I felt doll suited him, perhaps because I strongly associate it with Noir films, older Bond & Mafia movies, and crime bosses in general. Showing my age there, maybe. Then he also uses 'sweetheart' quite a few times (9 iirc), and I am pretty sure he does so in an endearing manner. Lowering those emotional walls a teeny tiny bit as fondness seeps through. And then, like, once or twice, he uses 'honey'. And, again, I feel like he uses it in an older manner, the way stereotypically a husband fondly refers to his wife. It feels intimate. Like he briefly forgets all of this is dust? I think about that a lot.
Did you notice how she doesn't use any terms of endearment? I did wonder if she had any, but I felt like she wouldn't use them. Not at this point. Not any more. She loves Bugs. She did slip up once though, did you notice? She is the queen of mildly awkward nicknames.
It may not seem so at first pass, and it's certainly not super obvious, but it seems to me like he's trying pretty hard to put Shivs' relationship goals bar somewhere on the roof. He wants nothing and no one to be able to even remotely compare to him, especially not the clown. So he throws everything at this that he can? Which, arguably, is mostly material because that's in his nature and fundamentally how he interacts with and relates to the world and people around him. But you saw how fast he was to gtfo that couch the minute she alluded to any part of this being cheap (Mediocre? Sub-standard? Blasé?). Does he genuinely not want to cheapen the whole thing? Or can he just not stand the idea of her thinking this whole thing is cheap? Or both? I suppose these aren't mutually exclusive.
I like that she can make him laugh, and vice versa. They've got really solid chemistry, dammit.
Two people that just really enjoy smoking. Like, they are Smokers with a capital S. That's a whole relationship dynamic unto itself. I am really pleased with how I managed to actively integrate it into their shenanigans. It was a lot of fun and something unique to them.
The way he just repeatedly fails at trying to engage her in a little girl dynamic. Was that a thing in the past? They had (and have) a fairly notable age difference (7-8 years, give or take). And he takes it so well when she just, doesn't play along or only does so for like five entire seconds, or blatantly wields it against him. Poor guy. Just spank her already, I know you want to.
The way Shivs goes from being mildly nervous and quite determined to: 'Oh fuck, I'd forgotten how good this actually used to be'. Like, been there, done that, didn't end well. But man, it's a mood.
Press F in the chat for the fact that she only had one orgasm in this whole thing, and it barely took the edge off. Jerk knew what he was doing. It's a power play, of course.
Sneaking in background information and then doing absolutely nothing with it. Like the comment he makes regarding both their facial scars. But also every time either of them alludes to their past relationship but doesn't actually tell us anything.
Mihawk is a wine aunt. Even Crocodile seems to think so. I am sorry, I don't make the rules.
The part where he just happens to have things on hand that she either likes (i.e. that specific brand of cigarillo's his company makes) or that fit her way too precisely (i.e. that outrageously swaggy negligee). This dude is not OK. My man, if you still know your ex' dress sizes this well after several years, you need to do some introspection. And maybe see a therapist.
The infamous fancy panties were originally a gift from him, and she evidently kept them these past years? I am not sure what makes me frown deeper: the fact that she still has them, or the fact that he immediately recognised them. I don't think she was necessarily wearing them on purpose? She does really like them and wears them often. RIP those undies. I think she's way more upset about losing them than she lets on. I wonder if she'll accept new one(s)? I suspect she may, something about gift horses. Maybe he figures? Maybe that's the point. A renewal of something. A visual reminder of the casual control he can exert over her when he wants to. It may seem insignificant (she will definitely not overthink it), but underwear is very private and intimate. He's staking a claim even without particularly saying so. But I am sure every other man in the room will figure that one out. (Counting on Mihawk to say it out loud in that bored drawl of his. The Bisexuals Straights Are At It Again.) Doubly so if they're particularly prone to feeling insecure. Poor Bugs. Just take this one lying down, you silly clown. She wants them because she thinks you'll like them and she knows neither of you can gdamn afford anything remotely like it.
Did you notice she isn't truly naked at any point? Partially undressed, yes. A little exposed, also. But not naked. Meanwhile, he's stomping around in his bare ass half the fic. I like how he gave her something nice to wear and then didn't take it off.
At this point, I feel like he gets pants problems the minute she calls him 'sir', no matter the context. Some things just get sexy tainted forever, and there's no going back, lmao.
The unnecessarily expensive details. I had so much fun with those? The layout and details of his office and bedroom, for one. Both their smokes are implied to be well out of Shivs paygrade. Any brands come to mind? Or take the wine, for example. Can you guess which one I am referencing? And the lace - I am from a traditional lace-making area. Handmade lace was and is hella expensive. Don't even start about lace featuring custom tailored designs. There was absolutely no need to throw this much Beli at the nearest wall. But he did it anyway, because he does it all the time.
The way he keeps verbally reminding her of how different things used to be. For the better, in his opinion, of course. Like, are we casually trading favours here, or are you trying something?
On that count, did you notice how often Shivs is actually thinking about Buggy in this? At no point is he far from her thoughts, it seems.
I didn't set out with this mindset, but based on how the whole thing came out - I think Crocodile might miss her (or the idea of her) ? At any rate, I don't think he's OK. You stupid dick. You self-marooned on this island of misery and now it's too late. No changies, no takebacksies.
I came up with the title post-fact. Maybe it's his thoughts, not hers?

My neighbor totoro
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However this movie spends an hour on children and then realizes something needs to happen as for the story to have some sort of tension by the point where you'd have ingrained the target audience into your brain and know everything's gonna be alright. Quite frankly, there's a lot of things intended for kids that are sweet, innocent and whatnot and have a point in their story, even if simple and meant for children to understand and teach them good values. Yes, and why would I watch something solely meant to display that. What do you mean "so what?", that's the point of the movie? The movie piles on a lot and a lot of scenes together for artistic value and to continuously display how innocent a child is. Why? Because it is mostly comprised of the children fucking around and showing off how well designed everything is, as well as put focus on what they're trying to display in the movie. Yes, despite the amazingly looking visuals that occasionally made me so impressed I forgot all about how bored I was for a short while and despite being 100% on board with what the movie has displayed, I still was bored. To the point where adults can watch it to feel like a kid again and children can watch it to be amazed by the movie's world.īut here's where my praise stops and my gripes with the movie starts. But I have to add, since its audience seemed to have been children, it has build an impressive world with imaginative designs in a realistic looking manner. But the reason it also has to be captivating it is because it's trying to display the innocence of children, which is the artistic goal of the movie. And I assure this was artstyle was very impressive if it still is today back then. Yeah, sure, anything has to be captivating, but in this situation, you have to keep in mind, the audience was intended to be children. You see there's a point to the art actually being this well animated and that is that its goal is to be as captivating as anything can be.
Tumblr media
Anyway, up next I'm gonna talk about, more of the art, and rather, its significance in this movie. Ok, now the movie so far was 10/10 children cry real. The range of emotions displayed in a few frames was done as right as anyone could ever do them and I can't imagine someone outdoing this kid. It may seem a ridiculous thing to pick out the level of detail for animation, but that's what I found most impressive. All down to the point of starting to cry silently because she was upset then up to the outburst of emotion, screaming and bawling as soon as she was given attention again the way children do when they are given attention in these situations. However, in Totoro, when the child started crying I could see the range of emotions she went through and react realistically, the same way any child of that age would. Most people don't even put any effort into the way they display someone crying and see it as something simple and easy to portray. However, watching a child cry in this made me realize something. Have you ever seen someone cry in an anime? I will assume that most of the time, depending on what you watch of course, crying doesn't rise any red flags. As an example there will be some scenes with children crying.
Tumblr media
The animation has plenty of small details throw in that makes each frame look lively and realistic. While the obligatory "for its time, it looks incredible" compliment must be said, I'll do one more and say that for our time, I wish people would pay as much attention to detail in animation as was done in Tonari no Totoro and would look at least half as good. Starting with the movie's strong suits, the artistic side of it is outstanding. So all I can present is what factored into my experience only a 5 with what the movie has had done and has not done. Tried to do because it was succesful in what it did. In this case, I don't have a lot to criticize on what the movie actually I usually prefer to criticize a show for what it tried to be but failed while presenting every factor I deemed important about the movie and why eventually it was only an average experience for me. Before the "what the fuck is wrong with you, a 5 on a ghibli movie, kill yourself" settles in, I want to assure you that the movie did everything that it set out to be outstandingly and if I was from that target audience, I would probably consider it nothing short of a masterpiece.

“On behalf of the royal family, I would like to extend my utmost support for the Anti-School Violence campaign for all students to have a safer and more meaningful learning environment.” You proudly announced to the board of officials alongside other influential individuals in Korean society.
Being the only princess in the current royal line may have its pressures, but holding a strong, direct impact for a brighter future for the people motivated you to take advantage of your platform for the better. As the image of pure innocence and revamped women empowerment, you aimed to accomplish all the things your mother wished she could before her untimely death alongside your personal aspirations.
Expressing genuine joy with the campaign, with a tinge of desire to annoy the old-fashioned and closeminded officials, your prying eyes were more enamored by a certain man in the back clapping by the ballroom doors. You can’t help but act flustered whenever he witnessed you in a state of success and satisfaction.
This man went by the name Jeong Jaehyun, your trusted bodyguard since you were in your early twenties. 3 years later, he still stuck by your side and helped you endure all the darkness as a royal.
Back then, you went through a rebellious phase that was ruining the image of your family. Clubbing almost every night, drugs, skipping school, you even managed to get all assigned bodyguards to quit! The media ate up all your tricks, turning them into scandals. That was the plan, of course. You desired your own freedom from all the royal obligations because you didn’t ask to be born into that lifestyle. To all of your peers who wished to be in your footsteps, you would’ve impulsively passed your title to them. There’s so much deception that lies behind the glitz and glam of it all.
This unexpected change in your former untainted attitude came to the point that your father, the king himself, stepped in and personally assigned one of his men to get you in check. He figured that appointing a guard nearest your age may lessen the tension and mend you back together.
In the start, you absolutely despised him. There was no way to fool him when you were up to no good. He easily found your alcohol and drug stash which he disposed of on the spot and stood by your bedroom door every night so you wouldn’t sneak out past curfew (which your father also strictly implemented).
One big turning point in your relationship was when he rushed you to the royal hospital when you drank a cocktail that went unnoticeably spiked. To think that this was a typical social gathering with other royals and officials, you’re a constant target to many. You didn’t wake up for a few days, and the entire time, Jaehyun willingly stood by your bedside and outside your hospital room.
Since that and more instances your father insisted you get involved in royal affairs, you softened up. As cliché as it was, the more time spent with him, the more you knew about him and vice versa. He was the one that got you to fully open up about your grief towards your late mother, encouraging you to seek help. Turns out you weren’t as different as you thought despite your differing ranks in society when he also had a void for a missing parent. In his case, it was his father, who ditched his family for his mistress. Silently, you helped each other recover from your traumas alongside therapy. From dreading his presence, you started treating him more casually. Your father’s tactic of assigning a bodyguard around your age admittedly worked.
Oh, how time flies.
This campaign was the last thing on your weekend agenda, so you had the entire late afternoon and evening to yourself. Bowing one last time to the audience, you stepped down from the platform and accepted the soft hand of your bodyguard, who quickly made his way to you despite the flashing cameras. It was something he got used to as it is part of the job.
Once he successfully ushered you out of the ballroom, his hand still held yours. Nothing new, except this event was quite public and you didn’t want anyone to get any wrong ideas. Strolling down one of the many hallways in the palace became a pastime for the both of you, where no one can catch you. It was a safe haven within the destructive life of the Park kingdom.
“You did phenomenal as I expected, your highness.” Jaehyun complimented, recalling your panic the night before as the stage fright hit strong when you were reciting your speech to him over and over again.
“We are in private, Jaehyun. Must you really use those formalities with me?” You taunted, bobbing your head sideways mockingly. With him could you felt like a normal young adult, and you wouldn’t have it any other way. Jaehyun loved being frisky with you, catching you get irked up. And he was up to do it again.
“Hmm last time we strolled these halls, Yuta caught us making out after a successful meeting with the Prime Minister.”
You gasped at his statement, conscious of whoever may be in the vicinity. But before you could refute, your hand that was interlocked with his were mightily slammed against the white wall. You lost your breath for a moment, his warm body closely on yours. His free hand freely roamed up and down your covered waist. His lips were dangerously near your neck, where you’re sensitive. Your hips naturally grinded against him to release the pent-up tension.
“Something tells me you want to do it again, princess?” Now he’s just using your title as a pet name, but you couldn’t complain. It just hits differently when the situation was set up like this.
“I deserve it, don’t I? Got a lot of those hell-driven officials on my side for this round.” You raised both your brows cockily, licking your lips.
“Hell yeah, you do.” Finally, he rids of the tension and plants open kisses on your bare neck. Your throaty moans were uncontrollable, and you could care less.
“My princess,”
Kiss.
“So intelligent,”
Kiss.
“So benevolent,”
Kiss.
“So helpful,”
Kiss.
“But,” He changed his pace and direction, swollen lips near your ear.
“But?” You question naïvely. He scoffed, smirking at your antics of playing dumb.
“But a total slut for her bodyguard.” He dominantly planted his lips against yours, one of his veiny hands gripping on your waist and the other by the arch of your butt. He was hungry, needy even. Due to your shared schedules, it’s been a constant struggle to have proper alone time from the snooping eyes of Korean society. After all, it wasn’t in the norm for a princess to fall deep for her bodyguard. Nor were you sure you would be accepted by anyone. Yuta, the bodyguard of your oldest brother, the crowned prince Jinyoung, finding the both of you at that time was a total shock but didn’t care either.
All that mattered was that your feelings towards each other are real and strong. Accepted or not, you had each other.
All this lust put you in a daze, wanting much more than another smooch fest in the hallway. Tugging on his belt, he squeezed your butt tightly. You emitted a moan, which allowed his tongue access. No way could you keep your hands to yourself, touching his upper body and the flexing of his abdominal muscles from his button-up. You felt his now hard member poking through.
Analyzing your area, you were on the other side of the palace. Farther to your bedroom where numerous rendezvouses were made, one kink you’ve considered in the past amplified your mind. Considering this area was also the king’s side, and he was abroad for royal affairs, this was your chance.
“I have an idea, my love. You up for it?” You rose a brow at your lover, challenging him. Not one to overpower this man in bed, but always suggesting a way on how to spice it up.
“And what exactly does your feral brain want to do with me, princess?” His finger lifted your chin so you meet eye to eye. You can just see the fire still burning, and oh how you were ready to intensify it.
“The main ballroom, where my father and late mother’s throne rest, are a few doors away.” Your fingers signal him to lower his stance as his tall height was difficult to reach. With a sneaky smirk,
“Let me ride you in the king’s throne, my love.” Your lips brushed over his and sucked his bottom lip, tugging him by his belt. He groaned, squeezing your butt. “It’s a royal order.”
“Nasty, your highness. Insanely nasty, you are.” His hands hoisted your waist, boosting you up in his arms. You gasped with profanities, ravenously cut off by his lips again. His nails digging deep in your bare thighs, your legs naturally linked themselves around his torso while your arms passionately intertwined his broad neck.
In between kisses, he carried you to the said main ballroom. One of your wildest imaginations, just a second away. This room remained to be the only place without any guards stationed technological advancements or updated interior designs to preserve its traditional beauty. Dated as far as the 19th century, only special events were held and the highest of the high were allowed inside. Spacious, surrounded by gold linings majestic paintings of angels from above with a huge crystal chandelier right above the center. Right ahead, the original thrones that your ancestors, grandparents, and parents sat on when they were throned in its pure glory.
Pushing your lover on the king’s throne, the gold sun-like rays plastered behind the headrest, he cockily leaned back and manspread his legs for comfort. He rubbed his hands before patting his thigh, waiting for your submission. But you weren’t going to give in just yet.
Not when you prepared a mini-show just for him underneath your designer silk dress.
Jaehyun’s solemn eyes marveled over your gorgeous figure as you stripped down one strap after the other. Due to its silk fabric, it effortlessly dropped down to your figure to reveal a new set of black lace lingerie from your previous trip to Paris. Ages ago, Jaehyun unhesitatingly ripped your favorite ones during his birthday, so you decided to get a mature version of it. A version where your bra lifted your breasts more and undies hiked up to your waist to elongate your legs. Only for the eyes of yourself and the man in front of you, establishing that you were a powerful woman who can be absolutely anyone she can be. Princess, a normal young adult, or his slut, it’s up to you how you see yourself.
Jaehyun mumbled all the profanities he could think of at the moment. Looking like a divine angel when the sun from outside shuns behind you, his slacks tightening so much more than a while ago.
“All this for me?” He ogled shamelessly, undoing the buttons of his dress shirt and untying his necktie. “What did I do to deserve such regal treatment?”
You sneered at his comment, stepping out your dress in your heels and stationing right in front of his luring lap. “You’ve always been there for me, thick and thin. I think you deserve a reward, don’t you think?”
Lowering yourself to straddle him, his breath hissed when your damp core collided with his crotch. Distracted and caught in your trap, “I don’t think you answered my question, my love.”
Rather than a verbal response, he roughly pulled you back in for a kiss. His hands scattered to explore from your back down to your waist. Your hands messily ran through his hair, tugging on some when your body got too sensitive to his wild touches. The thrilling sounds of the two of you drowning in your fiery romance bounced throughout the ballroom, not minding if anyone passed by the hallways outside. It was a private room after all, and whatever happens here, stays here.
Rolling on his crotch while his lips trailed down to your collarbones, the quick snap of your bra wires echoed. The tight lift lessened as Jaehyun’s fingers dropped the straps, unveiling your bare chest covered in his marks.
“Enough playing, princess. Let daddy have some real fun with you.”

Wilbur Soot- MCC
Request: Can u make a part two of MCC when ur on ur period I would love to see Wilbur! Also love ur HC!
Warnings: female reader implied, periods and cramps mentioned
~ I have been looking forward to this MCC since it was announced because I finally get to be in the same team as my boyfriend we have both won separately and the people we are teamed with are also really good so expectations are pretty high which has me nervous. I've been training extra hard as well to try and make my weaknesses less obvious so that the rest of my team won't have to carry me on certain games. All of this training however has made me super tired because I stayed up practicing and streaming last night which was kind of stupid of me but I can just drink a red bull or something to wake me up.
Wilbur has been super excited too because he has wanted to be on a team with me for a while and has been begging Scott to let it happen and he must have finally gave in. I love that he's excited to team with me and not have to be against me but I feel like there is more pressure because he really wants us to win together but its so hard to tell if that will happen. I would love to be quietly confident but there are some really strong teams although we do have George and Phil as well who are both pretty good (did I just make an elite team like imagine adding Dream as well) so we may have a good chance.
He pulled me up in the afternoon after I had been trying to catch up on my sleep to go on a walk before we will be stuck in our offices for ages. Wilbur has his office in an office building but I have mine at home because I like being able to just watch tv or get a snack when I'm working but its kind of good because it means there will be no echo from the both of us talking at the same time but we won't be able to celebrate together if we win.
On our walk my back started to really hurt as well as my stomach and immediately I knew what was up, I'm starting my period. I knew it was due but I was hoping it wouldn't be today because my performance will be even worse if my stomach hurts the whole time which I know it will. Wilbur could tell there was something wrong with me when I moved my hand over my stomach and walked quicker to get back home and sort everything out.
"You ok there?" He asked
"I'm good just cramps" I said
"Aww I'm sorry do you want to go home?" He asked
All I had to do was nod slightly and we were on our way home and Wilbur had an arm around my waist proving a bit of warmth to sooth my cramps a little bit. He has seen me doubled over with pain and sometimes get nauseous with how bad they can be so he knows that MCC tonight is going to be a struggle hence why I don't ever stream when I've got cramps because I will just curl up in a ball in pain if I do. We got home and when I had been to the bathroom Wilbur was waiting with painkillers and a heating pad to make it a bit better and he cuddled with me on the sofa until he had to leave to go to his office.
Once he was gone I needed a distraction so I started my stream to get a bit more practice in while just talking to my chat, they were concerned when I kept wincing after a wave of pain but I assured them everything was fine and I just wasn't feeling my best. Soon enough Wilbur joined the team vc and we interacted on stream for the first time in quite a while, the other joined soon as well and we headed into the main server for the start of the event. MCC is one of my favourite streams to do because everyone gets behind the whole team and cheers us on plus its a good chance to interact with new people, the viewers also love it each time which keeps me going even when its a game I don't like.
Half way through we were doing pretty good sitting comfortably in second place which is right where we wanted to be but next is ace race which is Wilbur's least favourite game and I'm not very good either plus with the new map we are all struggling. Getting into the game I was so nervous because I've been doing really well so far and have been sitting on 4th overall for the past 2 games and I would love to stay there but that probably won't happen. Phil is pretty good at ace race so I tried following him around but I quickly lost him and was going round with Wilbur instead both of us swearing when we couldn't make it through a particular part or our elytras were playing up.
"Fuck sake I hate this stupid jump pad" I said
"You bastard" Wilbur said
If anyone was hoping for a swear free stream then that went out the window very quickly, the combination of me, Wilbur and ace race is not a good one for no swearing. I can't even count how many times we both swore throughout but I imagine it was a lot although in the end it was worth it because I finished in 7th which is the best I ever did and Wilbur was 10th so we did really well. Coming out of ace race I went straight to the build with the leaderboard to see how I was doing and I'd moved up into 3rd in the overall so of course I took a million screenshots and got Wilbur to join some of them.
"You are doing so good I'm so proud of you" he said
"Thank you you're doing good too you're in 8th" I said
The last game soon came and finished and the nerves as we went into the hub to see our final placement were sky high especially because I did awful in survival games because my cramps started to get worse again and I just couldn't concentrate. We all loaded in and looked at the leaderboard and we were still in second, that means dodgebolt which I'm normally pretty good at but its just not going to happen today.
I'm so excited because we could actually win like Wilbur and I wanted but this is the hard part and with me not at my best I don't know how well it will go, people often target me too because I'm good at dodgebolt so I might get knocked out pretty easily. Wilbur was texting me during the break to see how I was doing and was reassuring me through discord that we could do this, he was also ready to come home right away and told me to stay streaming so we could celebrate together if we win and if not just to give the viewers a bit of content.
Dodgebolt got underway and we won the first game with a bit of ease so my confidence was rising as my cramps were getting worse. Game two started off badly when me and George got knocked out pretty quickly with Wilbur following not long after but Phil pulled through and won us the tournament.
"Well done everyone you all did really well" I said
"You did great too" Phil said
"Great job everyone but I'm gonna go home, y/n I'm coming for you" Wilbur said
With that he left the call and was on his way back while the rest of us celebrated and talked to friends on other teams or people who joined our vc to talk. It's been a while since I've won MCC so it was nice to feel that sense of achievement again and my chat are happy which is what I always want. I had a lot of Wilbur's viewers too as they joined to see him when he got back but honestly we share a lot of the same audience so it didn't feel bad only having this amount of viewers because of him because they are kind of my viewers too.
Eventually Wilbur got home and burst through the doors to my office arms wide open wrapping the round me and the back of my chair before giving me a chance to get up and let him sit down. I sat on lap and we talked to chat for a bit while he had his hands on my stomach slightly massaging it to help my cramps which was much appreciated. We celebrated our win together and promised to show off our coins when we get them before ending stream and climbing into bed.
When in bed I laid on top of Wilbur because it was comfy and he was warm while he rubbed up and down my back soothing me until I fell asleep while whispering cute things in my ears.

Changbin - Hybrid AU! (part II)
Tumblr media
part I
here you are again buying a ticket for the circus
you barely slept after last night, the thrills of being a volunteer to a fire act still keeping the adrenaline running through your body
and, of course, him
Spear B
you were excited to see what kind of fiery tricks he would pull off tonight since he promised you something special
as soon as you entered the tent, you sat on the second row in front of the stage
this time you wouldn’t hide yourself
kids and parents filled the place once more and you felt nervous
nervous to see his reaction once he spots you in the crowd
and nervous to see him again
you can’t deny that he bursted your heart’s doors and took a place in it in less than 24h
he was really impressive and mysterious, someone you’d like to know better
hopefully tonight you’ll be able to talk more
the lights suddenly went out and that same circus song began playing
funny how yesterday you were terrified of it, but now it made you excited because you know he is coming
the attractions were the same as the day before, nothing much changed except for the audience’s reactions
the kids were more hyped than yesterday, and you can’t deny you’re too
especially when the ringmaster appeared to announce the special act of the night
you can feel your own heartbeats resonating in your chest and your hands starting to get clammy
“ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages! You’ve laughed with our clowns, you’ve been thrilled by our acrobats, you were amazed by our jugglers…” the ringmaster spoke
“but now it’s time!” drum rolls filled the arena, just like it did yesterday
“it’s time to be mesmerized by our main attraction of the night!” the spotlight moved around the arena
oh lord… it’s now… he’s coming...
“brace yourselves because it's gonna get hot in here! Make some noise for Spear B!” the kids screamed their lungs out and you held your breath once he got on stage
he was so different, holy shit!
he had an undercut and his hair was styled to show his forehead
his right eyebrow had an X on it, which was quite charming, and he was wearing a tight red shirt
goddamn, you weren’t ready for this!
Spear B bowed to the crowd and as soon as he lift his head, the entire stage caught on fire
you were taken aback by the sudden heat, and the flames were so tall that you couldn’t even see him anymore
a hype song began playing and you saw some balls on fire moving in circular motion above all the flames
Spear B walked to the front of the stage, and you saw that he was juggling the balls amid the fire
the kids screamed, but you couldn’t do anything except to be mesmerized again by him
Spear B threw one ball at a time so high it almost reached the peak of the tent
when they all started to descend, he somehow created with his own mouth a thin stream of fire aimed directly at them and blew them up one by one like tiny fireworks
you smiled seeing his amazing pyrotechnic performance
you still had no idea how he did it, but it was absolutely extraordinary to witness it
he snapped his fingers and immediately the sleeves of his red shirt caught on fire
the flames quickly reached his shoulders, but with a strong clap of his hands he put out all the flames, including the ones that were still burning on the stage
the trick not only made his sleeves burn completely, but it also revealed the huge muscular arms you had no idea he had
geez… you’re twice as hot now
the lights suddenly went out and the song stopped
you held your breath once again, not knowing what to expect next
after about twenty seconds, a sudden brightness illuminated the arena, making your eyes shut involuntary
once you opened them again, you saw the same wooden target from yesterday, the same one that you were bound to while he threw spears on fire at you
but this time the edges of the target were lit up in flames
“and for Spear B’s last act, he had chosen a brave soul to come up on stage and be his victim” the ringmaster’s voice echoed through the arena
you smiled in the middle of all that hot craziness once his eyes found yours for the first time that night
he only motioned his head towards the stage and you already knew what to do
so you followed the staff and got up on stage once again with him
“ready?” he smiled and you felt your legs shaking seeing him so confident and so good looking and so, so close to you
you swear you felt heat radiating from his body
“yes” you answered trying to remain cool
“yesterday you promised an unforgettable performance, so I’m counting on it” you provoked him
“don’t worry, Spear B never disappoints” he winked and you wish you could just grab him right here and now
but the staff came in and placed you safely on the wooden apparatus in the same Vitruvian Man position with your arms and legs wide open
you could feel the heat from the flames surrounding the target tingling your skin, and it made your heart beat faster
this was already different from the day before
you saw him picking up four spears and putting one on his right hand while the others he kept on his left hand
he turned his back to you and a staff came behind him while the crowd cheered loudly
you couldn’t quite see what they were doing, but as soon as he turned around again you regretted coming tonight
he was blindfolded
WHAT?!
“are you kidding me?” you asked almost screaming
“this isn’t even my final form” he mocked smiling, and it hurt to see that his smile was even more prettier with his eyes covered
the spear on his right hand caught on fire out of nowhere and you felt your stomach trying to get out of your body through your throat
but to make it even worse, you felt yourself moving
the staff was spinning the wooden circle with you attached on it
FREAKING HELL!!!!
you could only scream, even though you weren’t spinning too fast
the fact that you’re stuck with a blindfolded guy aiming a flaming spear in your direction made your life flash before your eyes
you led a beautiful, yet monotone life so far, but with no regrets
except for tonight
you shouldn’t have come back here
you’re so dead
you closed your eyes when the crowd began cheering
a loud thud was heard and your heart felt like it dropped to your belly
one down, three to go
Lord have mercy!
you pleaded silently, praying to the universe to allow this to finish soon
another thud and loud screams, but you were sure no one was screaming louder than you right now
you felt your consciousness slowly slipping away, this was taking too long for your liking
two more loud thud and the wooden target finally halted its movement
but you didn’t have enough courage to open your eyes
“give it up for Spear B!” the ringmaster shouted while the staff untied you from that wheel of hell
your legs were wobbling, but you were able to keep yourself straight with the help of the spears stuck on the target
when you slowly opened your eyes, you saw Spear B with his arms open in front of the crowd receiving his well deserved applauses
he took a few steps back, and out of the blue huge flames engulfed the stage again, just like he did in the beginning of his act
you shut your eyes quickly, afraid of the sudden fire so close to you
you also felt remarkably hot with drops of sweat running down your spine
“scared?” Spear B’s voice was soft near your ears
you opened your eyes and almost lost control of yourself
he was right in your face, protecting you with his body while the flames were still burning hot behind him and the circus song played loudly
it was overwhelming standing so close to him, especially with his huge arms next to your head and his taunting lips within your reach
“was this unforgettable enough for you or should I try again tomorrow?” Spear B gave you a smirk and you didn’t even know how to react, you felt like putty right now
“I’m sweating” was all you could say, and it made him laugh wholeheartedly
the flames on the stage disappeared once he snapped his fingers and could breath a little better now
“you still haven’t answered me” Spear B raised an eyebrow
“are you out of your mind?” you asked feeling all the rush of adrenaline hitting you at once
“YOU TIED ME UP, SPUN ME AROUND AND THREW SPEARS BLINDFOLDED ALL WHILE THIS THING CAUGHT ON FIRE” you screamed staring at him
you took a couple of deep breaths, using your back of your hand to wipe the sweat from your face
“so… I guess this is a yes?” you gave him an angry look, but his expression caught you off guard
he looked a little nervous, and even though you wanted to kick him for doing this without any heads up, you couldn’t actually blame him
you’re the one who accepted going on stage, and you’re the one that was expecting a mind-blowing performance from him
he delivered it, you can’t deny it, so you really didn’t have to be so mean to him
“I was just trying to impress you, I’m sorry” he apologized with his head down and your heart shattered like it was made of glass
“don’t apologize, you were great” you smiled a bit seeing his lifting his head to look at you
“you think so? I scared you” he placed his hands behind his back, and although his arms flexed lusciously, the fear in his gaze was all you could focus on
he asked you if you were scared, but now you know he’s the scared one
“you didn’t scare me, you just took me by surprise, that’s all” you gave him a comforting smile and he nodded, seeming to regain his confidence back
“may I know your name or should I just call you Spear B?”
“my name’s Changbin, but you can call me cutie if you want to”
“Changbin is fine” you laughed
“Then I’ll call you cutie” he winked, making you blush a little
“this is my first time visiting your city, can you show me around?” Changbin asked
“is this your smooth way to ask me on a date?” you teased
“it was just my way of asking you out, I know it wasn’t smooth at all” he placed his right hand behind his neck and let out an awkward laugh
“it wasn’t, but I liked it” you replied “this is a small town, but I can show you some fun places”
“I’ll get changed real quick and be back, you can wait me outside” Changbin said cheerfully and ran backstage
you laughed at the situation and got off the stage
you didn’t even noticed everyone was gone because Changbin fogged your mind with his presence
you went outside and sighed in relief after breathing the fresh night breeze
there were still some children with their parents taking pictures and chatting with the hybrid performers, and you thought of Changbin
he was able to play with fire so easily, but was he also a hybrid?
there were no records of hybrids that can control fire, so what was he?
“psst” you turned your head to see Changbin’s head peeking from a small spot near the tent and you smiled walking towards him
“shall we?” Changbin put on a black cap matching the rest of his black outfit
he was just in regular loose clothes, but he looked so good it was unfair
the two of you began walking away from the tent, bodies so close that your hands were slightly rubbing together
after a small silence, you decided to speak
“I’m sorry if this sounds rude, but I need to ask… what are you?”
“I’m a hybrid” Changbin told you
“yeah, I figured that out” you replied “but I still don’t know what kind of hybrid you are”
“can’t you tell?” he opened his arms so you could take a better look at him
damn, he was fine
“no, I mean.. you look like a normal human being”
“no, I look like a hot human being” yeah, you couldn’t deny it
“and how are hot human beings created?” you asked raising your eyebrow
“crossbreeding with fire-breathing dragons, cutie” he winked
“what?!” you laughed aloud in the middle of the street, he was totally messing with you
“c’mon, please, I need to know, I’m dying of curiosity”
“I’m serious” he said laughing as well
“ah, stop it” you lightly pushed him to the side and continued walking
“why do you think I can control fire?”
“dragons are mythical creatures, they don’t exist” you stated
“tell science that”
“then how? how are you possible?” you pointed at him
“my grandpa was an experiment, his lab was trying to create legendary hybrids for selected people to own”
“the scientists somehow managed to encode a fire ability into a lizard-like gene and ta-da! my grandpa was created”
to say you were in shock was an understatement, but he continued explaining anyways
“my grandpa was the only one who survived, his brothers and sisters all had weird mutations and faced horrible deaths”
“but he didn’t show any signs of being a hybrid, he wasn’t immune to fire, he couldn’t control it, he didn’t have scales, he just looked like a normal boy”
“and that’s why the scientists tried to kill him, cause he was flawed and reminded them of their failure, but luckily he managed to escape and found refuge in the circus”
“he was just a regular juggler until puberty came, then black scales grew on his torso, arms, and neck, fire could not harm him and he could not only control fire but produce it as well”
“then my grandpa knew the lab had succeeded creating a dragon hybrid, but they never knew”
“he became the main attraction of the circus and everyone everywhere came to see him. Some people even tried to buy him, but the circus is a huge family and we don’t sell our own”
“he made a lot of money and the circus was thriving, those were happy days as they tell me”
“my grandpa met my grandma, they had my mom, but she didn’t had the dragon gene”
“my grandpa was disappointed that he couldn't pass on his abilities, until baby Changbin was born” you laughed of the way he said this
“I mean, I didn’t come out of my mom’s womb spitting fire, but I was never burnt, so my grandpa thought that I must be special like him, and he was right, but we only found it when I hit puberty as well”
“yeah, I’m a man now, you can tell that, right?” he wiggled his eyebrows making you laugh again
“my grandpa taught me all the tricks he knew and here I am, trying my best to build my legacy as a legendary hybrid too”
wow… you’d never guess this is his family’s story
“is your grandpa alive?” you asked
“yeah, and he’s still performing” he smiled proudly “he’s with the main circus in another town, this circus is actually a side one, he says I need to practice in front of people and there’s no better way to practice if not in front of someone special”
“you didn’t practice in front of me, you practiced with me” you laughed
“but I did alright, didn’t I?”
“yeah, you did” you gave him a fond smile
“here we are” you smiled seeing the bright neon plaque of the only ice cream parlour in your town
you both got inside, and since the owner knew you too well, he promptly began preparing your order
“this is really small, but I swear they have amazing flavors” you said “but if you want to stick to the traditional ones, they have it too”
“here you go” the owner handed you the single scoop of chocolate ice cream with melted chocolate on top and your mouth watered
“thank you, can you put it in the tab, please?”
“I can pay” Changbin reached for his back pocket, but you stopped him
“it’s okay, I have an open tab here, I’m a regular” you explained
“you won’t have anything?” you asked already tasting your ice cream
“no, I’m cool” Changbin quickly replied “can we…?” he pointed outside and you nodded, even though you thought his behavior was a bit odd
you both resumed walking and you began sharing with him some funny stories about the ice cream place
“I’ve never had ice cream” Changbin confessed unexpectedly and you stopped on your tracks
“why not?!” you were confused
“it’s too cold, I can’t eat it”
“really?”
“yeah, it hurts if I drink, eat or stand too close to something extremely cold” Changbin sounded a bit disappointed
now it made sense why he was so eager to leave the ice cream parlour, he wasn’t feeling well
“so you have no idea what is like to have ice cream? seriously?” he nodded
you had to show him somehow what ice cream tastes like, so you got closer to him, holding his neck tightly and pressing your cold lips on his
Changbin let out a bit of smoke through his nostrils, making you laugh and breaking the sweet kiss
“I was just regulating my body temperature” his cheeks were reddened
“I’ll take that as a compliment” you smiled
he licked his lips and smiled too
“chocolate ice cream is really good, by the way” Changbin said “but now I wonder what strawberry ice cream tastes like”
“why don’t we find out?” you smiled even more, intertwining your fingers with Changbin’s, pulling him back to the ice cream shop
thankfully, there were many flavors for you to show him tonight

birthday with the company headcanons!
☆ a birthday gift to two wonderful people, @trxblemaker and @rowandor whose birthdays are on the 13th and 14th respectively!
☆ (platonic!company/reader)
☆ takes place after BOTFA, everybody lived!!
☆ kind of angsty at the beginning but dON’T WORRY THERE IS MUCH COMFORT AND FLUFF TO MAKE UP FOR IT!!!!
☆ target audience- teen reader
☆ (y/bday)= your birthday
☆ (y/n/a)= your new age
you were slowly but surely getting settled into erebor, your new home
shortly after the battle, you found yourself adopted by EVERY MEMBER OF THE COMPANY
you now wore braids with handmade beads in your hair, one for each family
you lived in erebor, obviously
and all the other families, lived in rooms in the same hallway
you spent most of your time exploring
and the company weren’t the only ones you spent time with
dís had taken a liking to you quite fast, proving to be a much appreciated maternal figure in your life
tauriel was like a sister to you. someone you could prank kíli with, but also go to for advice and a listening ear
so basically you never had to worry about being lonely
things had been pretty quiet and uneventful for awhile
until, on one ordinary day, you made the mistake of bringing up your birthday
you were walking aimlessly around erebor, simply exploring and enjoying the view
when kíli bounded up to you, a smile lighting up his face
“company supper coming up! you will be in attendance, right (y/n)?”
“it’ll be great fun,” he continued. “we’re planning to head to the library after and tell stories while enjoying a few drinks.”
“no drinks for you though, little sister,” he added as an afterthought, ruffling your hair playfully
kíli now looked at you expectantly, waiting for your response
“oh that sounds great,” you answered after a pause. “what day is it planned for?”
“(y/bday) at 6:00!” kíli answered
you responded without thinking
“oh that’s my birthday! i’ll be turning (y/n/a). huh! with the quest and the battle and everything it must have slipped my mind! anyways, of course i’ll be coming, i can’t wait!”
you looked at kíli to see him frozen in place, a pained expression on his face
“kíli?”
you waved a hand in front of his face “earth to kíli?”
he jerked to life, flashing you a quick smile that looked more like a grimace
“terribly sorry (y/n), but i must be off! i think i heard uncle calling!”
you stared after him for a few more minutes, feeling confused
you definitely did not hear thorin calling
well that was weird
brushing it off, attributing it to kíli just being kíli, you went about the rest of your day as usual
oddly, you didn’t see much of the company that day, or in the rest of the days following
you didn’t see bilbo, dís, or tauriel either
and you usually spent time with at least one member a day
but now they were nowhere in sight
and if you did see them, they would make an excuse and quickly dash away
so by the end of the week you were feeling a little down
you didn’t know what you had done wrong
and you missed spending time with your family
you wondered if maybe dwarves didn’t celebrate birthdays? but even so, they had never avoided you like this before
some unfortunate thoughts came to you
‘maybe now that the quest is over and i can’t be of service in any way, they don’t care about me anymore? maybe i don’t fit in here in erebor?’
your sadness soon mingled with anger, and your anxiety remained
creating an uncomfortable knot in your stomach and a lump in your throat
what did you do to deserve this? they could at least tell you why
you had saved their sorry butts so many times
and when you saw them again, you planned to kick their sorry butts all the way to next tuesday for avoiding you
the day of the company supper (and your birthday) finally came
and despite your anger and confusion, you still decided to go
for multiple reasons
mostly because you wanted to confront them and ask why you had been ignored all week
and you also heard that bombur was making his famous apple tart with raspberry jam
evening came sooner than you realized
you saw that the clock read 5:45 and readied yourself as fast as possible
you quickly dressed yourself in your favorite outfit, pulled a cardigan over it, and ran a brush through your hair
you rushed down the long halls of erebor, keeping your pace quick
you finally turned the corner and came face to face with what had been dubbed as the “company room,” for all the time they spent in it
you felt your hand shake slightly as you grasped the cool metal handle
slowly, you opened the door, preparing to be met with the high, stone walls and rich velvet furniture
but you opened the door to find... nothing?
you squinted your eyes, trying to see into the pitch black room
“hello,” you called out. “thorin? fíli? kíli? is anyone here?”
all of a sudden, the candles and lanterns were lit, and people jumped out from behind furniture and under tables
“SURPRISE,” they yelled. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY (Y/N)!”
you didn’t say anything for a few seconds
you could only stare, dumbfounded, at the people in front of you
everyone was there. the whole company, including bilbo, dís, and tauriel
“w-what?” you tentatively asked. “what is going on?”
kíli piped up, a large smile on his face
“it’s your birthday party!! don’t you like it? we’ve spent all week planning it!”
you took quite a few seconds to look around the room
it was decorated with streamers made of beautiful fabric, and banners hung from the walls
a large pile of wrapped gifts lay in the corner
and in the center of the room was a huge table with a feast fit for a king
as the clocks on the wall continued to tick, you heard dís mutter “kíli if you got the date wrong i swear to mahal...”
you spoke up, “no, no. he’s right. it is my birthday. but... i don’t understand. you guys did all of this... for me?”
bilbo stepped forward, thumbing his suspenders, “why of course! it’s your birthday! we wouldn’t miss a chance to properly celebrate our girl’s birthday.”
“so you guys weren’t avoiding me all week because you think i don’t belong in erebor?” you asked
the room exploded with yells of anger, confusion, and outrage
“why in durin’s name would you think that?” thorin asked after the chaos died down, furrowing his brows in confusion.
“well you guys were avoiding me all week. i didn’t know what to think.”
dori hurried over to you, draping a blanket around your shoulders and steering you towards the couch.
“yes dear, come this way, and we will explain everything. don’t you worry, sweetling,” he soothed.
everyone gathered to find seats around you
kíli shifted uncomfortably on his feet and bit his lip. “i’m so sorry (y/n)! when i found out your birthday was coming up, i felt terrible that we didn’t know sooner, so i hurried to collect everyone and devise a plan.”
ori interjected, a worried frown on his face, “we were all so excited to plan your party, we must have forgotten to keep you distracted.”
“we meant no harm by it,” fíli added.
“aye,” said thorin. “and about that complete and utter nonsense you were spouting earlier: you belong in erebor just as much as any dwarf here. you are our family. and we wanted to celebrate you today.”
of course, you burst into tears
*cue panicked company*
“oh mahal, what did we do now?”
“i bet thorin said something wrong” “shut up dwalin”
“oh no lass, please don’t cry!”
through your sobs, you somehow found your way over to thorin, seeking cuddles
he scooped you up and sat you gently in his lap
you buried your face in his chest, clutching at his tunic with your hands, allowing his scent of smoke and pine trees to wash over you
his large hand rubbed soothing circles on your back as he mumbled assurances
bilbo held and stroked your hand gently
and you felt others reaching out with their own soothing touches
you eventually found yourself at the center of a huge group hug, not that you minded at all
group hugs did seem to be inevitable in this family
through tears, you explained that you were relieved, and so very thankful for the party
you apologized for jumping to conclusions and overreacting, but everyone insisted you had nothing to apologize for
after you eventually calmed down enough, bofur spoke up
“well i think you’ve done enough cryin’ this evenin,’ now haven’t ye’ lass? it is your birthday after all. i say we start the party!”
everyone agreed
as you all found seats at the table, you allowed yourself a moment to admire the spread
bombur had truly outdone himself this time
the table was full of food of all sorts. salted pork, mince pies, all kinds of cheeses, potatoes, biscuits, sausages, meats, and stews.
oh and don’t forget the ale- and lots of it!
you sat and ate until your stomach could handle no more
all the while listening to and telling stories, and laughing as bilbo reprimanded the dwarves’ bad manners
then came dessert
the company insisted to do by “your people’s traditions” and sing you happy birthday.
they were completely off key and didn’t know the tune at all
but it was perfect. it was more than perfect.
you dug into a few small slices of your favorite flavor of cake
fili may or may not have smashed kili’s face into his cake, leading to a wrestling match that had to be broken up by dwalin
after cake, came presents
once you saw all of the boxes, you protested vehemently, insisting you didn’t need all of this
which led into many more speeches preaching that you deserve all of this and more
so with a light blush staining your cheeks, you opened the gifts one by one
they were perfect
- forged by thorin: a sword with various gems emblazoned on the hilt (“so you can properly threaten any suitors you find yourself approached by in the coming months”)
- from bilbo: a handmade handkerchief embroidered with your initials and your favorite flowers (“well this would have come in handy earlier, now wouldn’t it?”)
- from fíli: one of his lucky knives (“see here, you can strap it on your thigh for easy access”)
- from kíli: a poorly knitted bear with one eye sewed on haphazardly (he made it himself, and he tried his best) because you had mentioned missing your stuffed animals before
- from tauriel: miruvor that she acquired from rivendell (for emergency’s- just in case)
- from dís: a quilt with the lonely mountain embroidered on it (“to keep you warm and remind you of home”)
- from balin: a collection of classic dwarven stories in a thick, leather-bound book
- from dwalin: a fluffy fur coat and a pair of gloves (“a wee lass like you will freeze in these winters without proper protection”)
- from ori: a beautiful portrait of yourself
- from nori: hair pins that also function as lock picks (“s’no harm in being careful”)
- from dori: your favorite tea (“a warm cup of tea is both the perfect way to start the day and the perfect way to end the day”)
- from bifur: a beautiful bouquet of flowers, hand picked and arranged by him
- from bofur: an intricate wooden carving of your favorite animal
- from bombur: a bountiful basket of honey cakes, carefully wrapped for future snacking
- from oin: fancy haircare and skincare supplies
- and from gloin: a necklace with a beautiful stone pendant
it was entirely too much, but, as you have come to learn, your family doesn’t do simple
especially when it comes to you
you thanked everyone many times, not knowing how to fully express your gratitude
the night, as kili had promised, followed with many stories and much laughter
and lots of ale
you tried to sneak a sip of thorin’s
AS A JOKE
a joke that he did not find very amusing
you spent the rest of the evening listening to tales of old, your head drooping to rest on tauriel’s shoulder
you recall the night getting darker, the fire slowly burning out, and the laughter becoming quieter
the gentle pressure of a coat being placed on you
and strong arms wrapped around your small frame, pulling you to a warm chest
helping you easily drift off into a peaceful sleep
you woke up in the early morning next day, before the sun had even risen
apparently everyone had become so tired and it was so late that they decided to just sleep in the “company room” for the night
no one had any sense of personal space while they slept not that you minded
you felt arms wrapped around you and draped over your stomach, hands brushing yours, feet propped up on you, and more
all were asleep, save yourself
you sat up slowly, careful not to disturb the others, and took a look around
to soak it all in
to enjoy the moment
snoring dwarves
a hobbit, curled up in a cocoon of blankets
an elf, hugging a pillow close to her chest as she slept
and you, right in the middle of it all
you gave a small smile as you eased yourself back onto the couch
this was peace
this was contentment
this was home

'He probably gets comments like that all the time "my mom loves you" 😂 Same thing happens with Keanu. Their "franchises" are "older" therefore they tend to attract "more seasoned" women. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. There's nothing wrong with that at all. We all age but sometimes keep our younger crushes. Especially if they age like fine fine 😂 these guys have a younger fanbase as well but I liked that he gave a cheeky nod to his older fanbase.' saw that on another blog have a good day.
I combined all the recent anons I got about this and they're a lot so if you sent one and want to read, they're all under the read more. I don't want all of these on my dash and I'm sure others feel the same.
So here we go
First anon: Thank you for that other perspective! If that was the intention of that sketch, it fell completely flat for me personally. I did not get the feeling of a nod to an older fanbase at all.
more surprised in the skit/sketch that david mentioned keanu but not surprised he mentioned a toxic mfer like mark harmon ( btw one of his ncis co-stars called him for years of being abuse by Pauley Perrette and she's been open about it too )
Him possibly being a toxic co-star is in no relation to him dating someone age-appropriate.
also i dont see why we, as people would get this talk of dd's sketch/skit on kimmel as a drama ? or start it as a drama really? i mean yes people don't like the skit, i do not like it as well, the keanue and mark harmon ( even though harmon is problematic as fuck ) mention was bizarre as hell. but no matter what DD does even if it was intentional or not he'll still be hated tho just my two cents.
I don't consider this drama. I have an opinion, other people agree or disagree. It may seem like drama to others, I don't know. I wish people would just comment on existing asks instead of sending new ones that basically say the same as the others have before. I didn't like the sketch and thought it was in bad taste. I don't recall saying I hate him. If someone in a comment said it, please talk to them.
my two cents here with the skit of DD is that as the anon said he probably was reading it from the cue cards couldn't do shit about it, yes he could have said no but they were recording the entire thing and how we'd know what went down there truly? we're just audiences to the whole thing. yes the skit/sketch is bizarre and weird bc he never have been close to both actors that he mentioned there. it is the show's skit/idea not his people.
It was scripted. He probably just read out loud what was given to him. I have no idea how much input artists give, but the whole interview was also so scripted - as it always is, with everyone - that there must be some kind of conversation and understanding what can be discussed and what not. Cause otherwise why does no one ever ask him about his love life?
weighing on the DD doing that skit/sketch thing on kimmel, y'all know that he didn't really thought of that sketch right? pretty sure that's all about the show making him do it and the show and sketch is also recorded?? not live?? also my two cents here is that he's not jabbing at keanu or mark dating someone appropriate lol
Pretty much answered this in the ask right above.
doing a skit on Jimmy Kimmel disparaging men who are in relationships with age appropriate women when you're doing the complete opposite of that and trying to hide it is not a good look by any stretch of the imagination. but watch his older female fans trying to defend it, even though they were targeted too
Most of what I saw were either people finding it funny or not liking it at all. There seems to be no middle ground. Then again I haven't seen that much. I was surprised how few people were actually talking about it. Not just the sketch, the fact that DD was on Kimmel at all. Maybe it's because of who I follow.
I have to disagree with you when you say we all do weird things. David isn’t just doing weird things he is pry of a societal problem that makes it okay to objectify young female bodies. And many give him and others a pass because they are charming Or because of prior things they did. Not holding men responsible for their toxic behavior is the problem and even worse is that women are among those apologists. And I like your blog and I know that you don’t like to be controversial but at one point someone has to have a clear standpoint without giving passes to the patriarchy system that only see value in a woman’s appearance and youth instead of her education and achievements
I meant that more in general terms. I think I've been pretty clear and outspoken that I don't care about his relationship with MP - or any large age-gap relationship in general. I am constantly begging for stories about middle-aged people.
I just got around to watching that interview because of the Drama on your blog and WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!! who ever thought that was a good idea?? he just made fun of really talented people and he embarrassed not only his fanbase but also himself. I wonder how he looks his daughter in the eyes after a shitshow like this (pardon the language but im really disappointed) :((
Cursing is allowed on my blog, anon :) I really wonder who wrote the sketch and why they thought it was a good idea. For DD or anyone. Humor is a touchy subject and there's no agreed-upon definition on what is and isn't funny. I'd think West doesn't care much about it. She knows her dad better than any of us here.

________
“So, what do you think?” asked the man in the suit on the other side of the conference table. You looked to your left, your dad looking over at you.
“It is a good offer, Mr. Hamilton, but unfortunately we can’t accept,” you said. He balked at you before looking over to your dad.
“She’s the boss, not me,” he said. “It doesn’t sound like we have a deal.”
“Mr. Ackles-”
“Are you disrespecting her because she’s a woman or my child? I’m not quite sure which one it is,” said your dad with a smile. The man’s face went blank and you kept a smirk off your own. “I am here as an owner. If this is how your grocery store deals with heads of distribution for breweries then I’ll tell you right now, never call us again,” said your dad. You gathered up your papers and slid them back in your portfolio, the man taking a deep breath.
“What if we did 5% better than the number on that page?” he asked.
“No,” you said, your dad echoing the sentiment.
“That’s an amazing deal,” he said as he stood up. You clenched your jaw and shoved your portfolio in your bag as your dad leaned back in his seat.
“Actually, Mr. Hamilton, it’s not. You offered the least desirable shelf space, a very small amount of shelf space at that, placement in your outer region stores, not in the city or suburbs surrounding Vancouver, and you wanted an absurd percent of profits. People in this area want our products and we are more than happy to find a seller that suits our needs,” you said. You nodded and your dad stood up. “Thank you for your time, Mr. Hamilton.”
Mr. Hamilton grumbled as you walked out of the conference room, your dad smiling wide as you walked through the hall.
“Alright. I’m impressed. You more than earned that promotion,” he said.
“Negotiating distribution deals is strangely a lot like college,” you said. “But easier.”
“These guys weren’t even your first choice,” he said once you were in the elevator alone.
“Nope but they didn’t need to know that,” you said. “I wanted the other deal as soon as I saw it.”
“Well let’s send it out to the lawyer to review and then we can sign the paperwork,” he said.
“I already did,” you said with a smile.
“You did huh. What if I wanted to go with this guy?” he asked.
“You may be the head owner but I’m head of distribution. I want your input but if you’re going to second guess me, I don’t want that job. I told you that when you gave it to me,” you said. He nodded and leaned back against the wall. “What?”
“S’nice to see you confident is all,” he said. “You know what you’re doing.”
“I really don’t. I just kinda try my best and hope it works out,” you said.
“Pretty much the definition of being an adult,” he chuckled.
“Does that feeling ever go away?” you asked.
“Well, I’m fifty one and I don’t feel much different than a twenty year old kid if I’m being honest. You learn not to sweat the small stuff as much I suppose but not really,” he said.
“Like you getting gray hair,” you smirked. You earned a headlock for that comment, your dad only releasing you from your noogie when you got to the lobby. “Hey, at least you have hair still!”
“You are being such a little shit,” he laughed.
“I won’t tell anyone you dye it,” you said, humming as you headed for the exit.
“I do not! It’s a few specks and that’s it. Plus mom thinks it’s hot so I see no problems with it,” he said, pulling you into another noogie once you were outside. You fixed your hair, getting a peck on the temple. “Alright, alright. I got my audition I have to run to. You want to head back to the hotel and change and I can meet you back there later before I take you out for dinner?”
“Actually, could I go with you? I’ve never seen one of those,” you said. He winced and cocked his head. “I can go somewhere else, that’s-”
“It’s not a problem, munchkin. It’s just...it’s kind of an intense audition. It’s a drama. It’s a pretty dark scene,” he said.
“I’ve seen all of Supernatural though and the movie. I even read the other movie I wasn’t supposed to know about yet and that one goes way dark,” you said. He bit his bottom lip and you smiled. “It’s cool dad. You need to do your audition thing anyways.”
“You sure?” he asked. “If you want to-”
“Probably a better idea for me to wait until the movie,” you said. “I’ll meet you back at the hotel then?”
“Sounds like a plan, kiddo.”
“So how’d it go?” you asked when your dad walked in the hotel room three hours later. He sighed and you frowned. “You didn’t get it?”
“Oh, I got it,” he said, plopping down in the chair. You raised an eyebrow and he smiled. “I turned it down though, took a different part in the movie.”
“But why would you turn down the lead?” you asked.
“You know how I said it’s supposed to be dark? But there’s that bit of love story?” he asked.
“Yeah. That’s what was cool to you about it you said.”
“Yeah. I met the lead actress who would be my romantic interest,” he said.
“She not so great?”
“She was very lovely,” he said. “She’s also nineteen years old.”
“So...thirty two years age difference?” you said with a wince as he nodded. “Who thought that was a good idea?”
“Hollywood is...I am very happy you never wanted to be an actress, let’s put it that way,” he said. “Now I’m playing her dad in the movie. I would have walked completely but my manager is gonna kill me as is for walking from a lead roll,” he said.
“Do you really need it though?” you asked.
“No. I wanted to try out something new and interesting though,” he said. “That story was different.”
“Yeah but I see red flags all over it. Who’s even the target audience besides pervy old guys?” you asked. He laughed and nodded, getting to his feet.
“You have a very good point,” he said. “Besides, I got another album I want to work on in the meantime and there’s plenty of other stories out there.”
“Told you so,” you said. “Now where are we going for dinner cause last time it was that really fancy steakhouse downtown and-”
“Pack up your bag and we’ll head up,” he said with a smirk. You narrowed your eyes and he padded into the bathroom. “Oh, we’re staying somewhere else tonight. Maybe we can go visit the canyon-”
“I love the canyon park!” you said, hopping up from the bed. “Are the winter lights still up?”
“Yes,” he said with a big smile. “We got a three hour drive up there and then we’re gonna have a nice dinner and then we can go check it out before we fly home tomorrow. How’s that sound?”
“It sounds like, really nice. What’s the occasion?” you asked.
“No occasion other than to see you get all excited,” he said. “You know mom and your brother are off having a fun little weekend together while your sisters drive TJ insane. I figured we could have one night of fun.”
“Are you kidding me? They love him. He texted me that they ordered a pizza each for themselves for dinner,” you said. “They were gonna stay up late and watch rom coms apparently.”
“You found a pretty good guy,” he chuckled, as he walked back out of the bathroom and stuck his small bag in his backpack. You gave him a quick smile and nod, your dad returning it. “You two doing good?”
“Yeah. I just…” you said, starting to pack up. “I don’t know.”
“Something going on?” he asked. You shrugged and put your heels in your suitcase. “Y/N.”
“You know how his parents were in town last week?” you asked. He nodded and you took a deep breath. “Well, Allie was doing something she wasn’t supposed to and his dad was watching her and so we said timeout time was what we do and everything was going fine and then she comes running in from the playroom crying cause he’d tried spanking her.”
“TJ doesn’t strike me as the kind of parent that would be okay with spanking. It doesn’t do any good,” he said.
“Yeah, well, it wasn’t just spanking. It was you know...old school spanking,” you said.
“With…” he said, pointing at his belt. You nodded and he rolled his eyes. “No offense but his father is a fucking idiot. I’ve always thought so.”
“Well, if you thought I was pissed, you should have seen TJ. I’ve never seen him that angry before. He got in a huge shouting match with his dad. I took the kids outside to the park and then his parents were gone by the time we got back. They’re not speaking at the moment,” you said. “I was just...why doesn’t his dad just talk to him? Talk to his grandkids? I know you guys would never do something like that and...I just don’t understand some men and their need to be the tough guy and the asshole all the time.”
“You grew up with a couple of those yourself,” he said. You finished with your clothes and gave him a glance before he grabbed some more relaxing clothes to change into. “If I knew why, I would tell you. Strength doesn’t belong to men and emotions don’t belong to women. I pity anyone who thinks experiencing their life fully is weakness.”
“Mom told me once, when I first came to the house that you were a bit closed off when you were younger,” you said.
“I was. In a way I still am. I always will be. I’m like you in that way. I always felt things but it’s scarier to show it. You feel like you have to be strong, you don’t want to bother other people, you think it goes away on it’s own,” he said. “Then you fall in love and then you have children and you realize there is nothing more badass than playing princesses with your daughter and knowing that you are part of the reason why she has pure happiness at that moment. I only ever wanted my family to felt the love that I did. It’s a pretty decent way to live. If somebody out there doesn’t think I’m man enough, that’s their problem, not mine.”
“TJ thinks of you as his real dad, you know. He says you’ve never put him down or belittled him. He’s never questioned what you think of him.”
“Why would I hurt some innocent kid, especially one that’s one of mine?” he asked. “You know better than anyone, kiddo, blood doesn’t make you family.”
“No, it doesn’t. Go change so we can get on the road. I’m starving already.”
“Did you get lost?” you asked two and a half hours later as your dad drove the SUV he’d rented for the weekend.
“No, I’m not lost. The hotel is just a few miles up the road I think,” he said. You stared out the dark window, rain coming down hard on the January night.
“If you tell me the name I can-” you said, a hand reaching out in front of you before you crashed head on into something. You suspected the SUV had flipped but it was too hard to tell, especially once you hit your head on something and went out cold.
You woke up a few seconds later, gaining your bearings, turning to your right and finding your dad upside down and covered in blood.
“Dad,” you said, undoing your seatbelt. You shoved on him but he was still, his jacket turning a crimson color. “No, no, no.”
You dropped down and undid his seatbelt too, catching him as he slipped. You kicked away the glass in the broken windshield and dragged him outside into the rain. You felt pain in your back but ignored it and got him out where you could see in the headlights. You glanced past the truck and saw what looked like a dead moose in the middle of the road.
“Dad,” you said, laying him down. He had a cut on his head in his hair, his chest was soaked  and his left leg looked funny. You tugged up his shirt and got a face full of blood for it, falling backwards and wiping it away.
You stared at him before you put a shaky hand against his neck. There wasn’t anything there and you moved your fingers again, over and over and over.
“Dad, no,” you said, shaking him, unable to find a pulse. “You promised me. You don’t…”
He didn’t move and you sat back on your heels, looking around for help but there were no other cars, nothing around but trees and a wet road. You reached a hand into your pocket for your phone but it was shattered, pieces of metal and glass falling out. You found his in his back pocket but it was broken and wouldn’t turn on.
“No, no, no!” you shouted, throwing the phone against the truck. “No! You don’t get to die! You don’t die...you promised. Dad, you promised. You said 102. I can’t...I can’t, please I can’t. Please wake up. Please, please, please, dad. Please. I love you. You can’t go yet. Please, daddy, please, wake up.”
You tried for a pulse again but there was nothing and the rain was beginning to stain the ground pink. You stared at it long enough for your stomach to swirl. You ran over to the side of the road and threw up, slowly coming back before you fell down to your knees. You looked at him, a heaving sob leaving you as you clenched your fists.
“What did I ever do to you?” you shouted at the dark sky. “What did I do to you! Stop killing my parents! I never did anything wrong! Why do you keep hurting them! Why!”
You turned to your dad and you could barely see you were crying so hard.
“Wake up,” you said. He was motionless and you took your fist, beating on his chest hard. “I said wake up!”
You slammed it down again, over and over until your hand was throbbing but you didn’t care. All you wanted was for him to be okay.
“WAKE UP!” you screamed, bringing your fist down hard.
“Y/N!” he said as he shot up, gasping for air before he plopped back down. You scurried next to him, your dad taking a few deep breaths as he looked up at you. “You okay, tall munchkin?”
“I’m fine,” you said, putting a hand on his head. “Dad, don’t move. You’re really hurt.”
“I feel really hurt so can do,” he said, shutting his eyes.
“Stay awake!” you shouted, his eyes flying open.
“No closing eyes, understood,” he said. You squeezed yours shut and took off your jacket, shaking the phone piece away before you balled the thing up and pressed it against his stomach. You threw his hands over top of it, and took off your flannel, folding it up and tying it around his leg. You sat back at his head again, taking over for putting pressure on his stomach. “Y/N, look at me.”
You glanced down, finding a look on his face you’d not seen since he found you on the highway, walking in the rain the night of your seventeenth birthday.
He was afraid.
“Did you think I died?” he asked. You couldn’t speak but nodded, trying to stop the tears that were mixing in with the rain. “Oh, honey. Honey, I’m okay. Dad’s okay.”
“You didn’t have a pulse,” you choked out. “And our phones are broken and there’s no one out here and you can’t move and now I have to watch you die.”
You cried hard, sobbing as you tried to get a hold on the bleeding.
“You’re hurt,” he said, a stray finger tracing over a cut on your arm.
“I don’t care!” you shouted. “I can’t fix this. I don’t want to watch my dad die again. Don’t make me do that again, please, dad, please.”
“Y/N, breathe, kiddo,” he said when you felt yourself gasping for air. You shook your head and felt him reach a shaky hand up and wipe off your face. “Honey, it’s gonna be okay. No matter what happens.”
“I don’t want to be alone again. Don’t leave me here by myself,” you said.
“I’m gonna do my best,” he said but he was looking even paler and you winced. “But you’re a smart girl. You’re an amazing young woman and I know you don’t want to hear this right now but I don’t...I don’t feel right inside and I don’t think...I don’t want to die, munchkin. I’m not done with you yet either. But odds are, I’m not making it off this road and if that happens, you’re gonna promise me you’re gonna go be happy and have a really great life and I’m gonna be upstairs watching your back okay?”
You nodded, not even bothering trying to not cry anymore.
“I love you so much and I’m so proud of you and I’m really happy we got to a place where I know you love me back just as much. Oh, and there’s boxes in the storage container for all you guys. Letters. There’s one for this too. Just read it. It’s gonna sound a hell of a lot better than whatever this blubbering mess is.”
“Stop crying,” you said to him.
“Can’t really help it at the moment,” he said, pursing his lips.
“Can I make you feel better?” you asked quietly.
“Just stay...maybe don’t tell mom about the crying,” he said with a laugh and a wince.
“Okay,” you said. You took a deep breath, spotting your purse nearby. You stared at him and back at the bag.
“What?”
“How much do you trust me?” you asked.
“With my life,” he said.
“Hold this,” you said. You put his hands on your jacket again, feeling him put less pressure than before. You reached over and grabbed your purse, dumping it on the ground and picking up your hand sanitizer. You squeezed it all over your hands and rubbed them together, taking a deep breath. You moved his hands away and took a deep breath. You grabbed your hat from your bag on the ground nearby and rolled it up, shoving it in his mouth. “Whatever I do, don’t yank my hand away, okay?”
He nodded and saw you peel the jacket back quick to get a look.
“I really hope you pass out from this,” you said. He gave you a thumbs up and squeezed his eyes shut before you moved the jacket away and shoved your fingers into the tear in his torso. He shouted into the hat, your fingers trying to find the spot inside that was gushing the blood out. You shuddered when the sound escaping him turned into some kind of scream you were positive he shouldn’t have been capable of making. The hat fell out of his mouth and he threw his head back, squirming as he grabbed your arm.
“Stop, stop, stop,” he said, gritting his teeth.
“I’m sorry,” you said. “You’re gonna die right here if we don’t stop the bleeding right now.”
“Stop!” he shouted, body tensing up, his voice quiet. “Please, stop. Please, Y/N.”
“Almost,” you said, his hand tightening around your wrist but never pulling away. You felt something different inside and pinched with your fingertips, your dad trying to get away from it. You peeled up the jacket from around your hand and saw the blood was much slower, stopping to a trickle eventually. “Hey! I think I stopped it!”
“Great,” he winced, slamming his hand against the pavement. “Everything in me wants to just rip your hand out of my insides. God, you have no idea how badly I want to do that right now.”
“S’kinda how period cramps feel,” you said. “This is a little more extreme though.”
“I would hope so,” he said. You leaned over and looked at his leg but it looked decent for the moment. “So, we’re just gonna sit here then until a car comes.”
“I think that’s the plan considering either of us moves and you’re dead,” you said.
“Okay. Good plan,” he said. He rested his hand on your arm and pushed up your short sleeve. “Is you shoulder dislocated?”
“Yeah,” you said. He frowned and you laughed. “Dad, I’ll live.”
“You’re hurt.”
“Yeah but you’re way worse so I’m in charge. It’s pain. I’ve dealt with it before. I can deal with it now,” you said. He leaned his head back against the pavement, looking up at the sky. “Don’t go and die on me now.”
“I’m okay. The searing pain is keeping me awake,” he said. You looked around for a car but saw no headlights in either direction. “If a car doesn’t come, it’s okay, munchkin. You’re giving me a shot I shouldn’t have right now.”
“I’m not letting go until I pass out or you’re...a car will come,” you said.
“Honey, be realistic. I’ve lost a lot of blood,” he said. “Odds-”
“I get it. You’re very likely going to die. Now stop talking like that and tell me you’re gonna be fine,” you said.
“I’m gonna be alright,” he said with a smile. “So. Anything on your mind you want to talk about?”
“I wish I went to med school but no, not really,” you said. He chuckled, shivering a bit when he stopped. You leaned over top of him, the rain hitting your back and giving him some relief from it.
“You don’t have to do that,” he said.
“Are you always this grumpy when someone tries to take care of you?” you asked.
“Quite possibly,” he said. “Well, while I have you as a captive audience, I might as well tell you now.”
“Tell me what?” you asked.
“I had no idea what I was doing most of the time when it came to you. We made it up as we went,” he said.
“You knew exactly what to do,” you said.
“I slept outside your room once. I was afraid you’d try running away again,” he said.
“Dad.”
“I didn’t even want this many kids and then we had the three and it was all good. You were never in the picture,” he said.
“Why did you want to adopt?” you asked. You were freezing and hiding the shake in your body, your dad not looking so hot himself.
“There was this young guy at the brewery at the time. He went on and became a lawyer I think. He um, we were talking one day and he told me he grew up in foster care during his teenage years. I got the jist that it really sucked. It wasn’t really even that big of a deal and I thought it over at home that night and I looked around the house and thought, we got the space. We have the means. We could do something good,” he said. “It was just an idea for a while and then one day I said to De, let’s do this and that’s how we started.”
“I’m glad you did,” you said.
“Me too,” he said. He pushed up the back of your shirt and you knew he saw the blood you felt there. “Let me see.”
“No, I’m fine,” you said, twisting your body farther away.
“You need to get help for yourself,” he said. You shook your head and he scoffed. “I wasn’t asking.”
“Make me. Oh wait, you can’t.”
“I know I can’t,” he grit out. “If something happens to you because you were trying to save me, I can’t live with that.”
“It’s a cut! I have lots of cuts and my shoulder is killing me and I know I have a concussion and my whole body hurts and I’m freezing but it doesn’t matter. Why do you not-”
“If you were where I am right now and Allie or Colin was hurt, more hurt than they’re letting on, barely keeping you alive, you think you’d tell them to save you over themselves?”
“No,” you said quietly.
“Then you know exactly why.”
“But I’m not a parent right now. I’m the kid in this situation and I am terrified. I feel like that ten year old girl that watched her parents die slow and in pain and she couldn’t help them. All I did was get bigger. I didn’t learn a damn thing in case it happened again,” you said.
“Y/N. I’m alive right now because you are saving my life. You pulled me out, you got me breathing again, you wrapped up my leg and you quite literally have your hand inside of me piecing me together. You’re doing all of this in the middle of winter, trying to keep me warm and getting hypothermia yourself, pushing through wanting to fall apart all while you are very, very hurt. You want to know what you learned?”
“What?” you breathed out.
“Even if it’s hard and it hurts, you don’t give up. What have I always said? Just try for me. It’s all I wanted. I am more than okay if this is it for me because right now, when it’s probably the hardest it’s ever been for us, you’re trying. You’re trying harder than I’ve ever seen you and that’s all you gotta do the rest of your life. Just try and it’ll work out how it’s supposed to.”
“You’re not supposed to die,” you said. Your head got dizzy and your stomach churned, your dad staring up at you. “I’m gonna throw up.”
You turned your head away quickly, avoiding him and getting the pavement beside you. Thankfully most of it was clear after you’d emptied your stomach before.
“Concussion,” he said as you got your bearings back and took the brunt of the rain again. “Y/N.”
“I’m okay,” you said, taking a deep breath. “I’m okay.”
“I think you’re in shock.”
“Probably but you’re in it too,” you said. You were shivering harder now and you saw your arm start to shake. You grabbed it with your free hand, steadying it as best you could.
“Get in the car.”
“No.”
“You’re going to freeze and go into shock if you don’t get out of the rain. Get in the car.”
“No.”
“Get in the damn car!”
“You’re a fucking idiot,” you said, his face in a scowl. “I’m not leaving, you goddamn idiot. I never was. Get that through your thick fucking skull!”
“Why won’t you get in the fucking car!” he shouted. “You fucking little shit, just get in the car. Don’t make me beg you. Get in the car. Please get in the car!”
“No. I’m not giving up on you. I’m not saving myself. I’m not and you can barely lift a finger. You don’t get to choose. I do.”
“You’re going into shock. You’re gonna die if you don’t get warm right now. Get in the car,” he said, closing his eyes. “Please, tall munchkin. Please. I can’t watch you die either. It’s not how it works. Don’t make me watch that.”
“Yet it’s perfectly fine for me to have to?”
“Because kids are stronger than their parents you dumbass,” he said. “Go. Please. You did your best. You still saved me. Why won’t you listen to me?”
“Because I was the person screaming and shouting on the side of the road on a cold rainy night once. I was the person that pushed and pushed and tried so hard to get you to go away. But you wouldn’t give up on me. You were never going to give up on me. It’s a decade later and now it’s your turn to learn that I was never walking away from you either. I don’t care what you want. I don’t care if this is scary for you. I was terrified of you and I believed you. For a split second I let myself believe you and that was the start for me. So you can be as scared as you need to be because I’m not giving up on you. Trust me. Please.”
“Okay,” he said quietly, nodding his head. He was silent for a beat, nothing but sniffles in the air. “I’m gonna wait as long as I can but the next time I ask you to get in the car, will you get in there?”
“Yes.”
“Are you lying?”
“I don’t know,” you said.
“S’okay.”
He gave you a smile and you tried to return it, focusing on keeping your fingers clamped tight around the artery.
“I wrote you a song,” he said. “It was gonna be on the album.”
“You want to sing it?” you asked, another round of tears hitting you.
“I’m getting kinda of tired, kiddo,” he said, closing his eyes again.
“Dad,” you said, a light flickering off the pavement. You looked behind you and saw headlights headed your direction. “Dad! There’s a car!”
“Love you,” he mumbled.
“No, you don’t,” you said, pinching his insides tighter, getting a small wince from him. “Awake.”
“Trying to,” he mumbled again. You heard the vehicle slow down and drive around the moose, stopping when it saw you. Someone got out of the pickup, another door opening up.
“Shit,” said the one guy, running over to you. He looked at you and your dad, staring at your hand. “Okay, there’s a hospital like five minutes from here. Tony! Get my snowboard!”
The other guy grabbed a board from the back of the pickup, rushing over with it. You got what he had in mind and moved aside as best you could, the two men rolling your dad on top of it to use as a makeshift stretcher.
“Up on 3. 1, 2, 3,” said the first guy. You groaned as you stood up, your back killing you but they were walking to the back of the truck bed, having you carefully climb up as they pushed him in. Tony climbed in the back with you before the other guy got behind the wheel and took off.
“You okay?” he asked you.
“Not really,” you said, Tony holding the board from moving as best he could.
“I’m Tony. That’s Ray. That your dad?” he asked.
“Yeah,” you said. “I’m Y/N. Please tell your friend to hurry.”
“Ray! Floor it!” he said through the back window. The truck went far faster than it should have been going but soon you saw lights and civilization again, the truck fishtailing around into a parking lot. Your dad grunted which you took as a good sign.
“We need help right now!” said Ray as he ran out of the truck and over to an entrance. A few people in scrubs came rushing out with a stretcher, Tony jumping out of the way as they got a backboard under your dad.
“You need to move, sweetie,” said a doctor but his eyes quickly went down to your hand and back up. “Get on.”
“What?” you asked.
“Straddle and get on the board,” he said. You climbed over top of your dad, someone holding your shoulders and making you yelp as you were moved backwards onto a stretcher.
“What happened?” asked a nurse as you were pushed inside.
“We hit a moose,” you said, nearly throwing up again when you saw him in the light of the building. He was covered in blood and you caught your reflection in the glass, sporting a similar look. “He was out cold for a while. I couldn’t find a pulse so I hit his chest real hard and he popped up. I think his leg is broken and he had a cut on the side of his head and his torso was gushing and he lost a lot of blood, like a lot, and I couldn’t stop it so I shoved my hand inside and that was kind of working but he’s not talking anymore.”
“Okay, people let’s focus on that torso and get some blood in our friend here. What’s his name, sweetie?” asked the doctor in charge.
“Is that Jensen Ackles?” asked one of the nurses. You nodded and she dropped her jaw. “Oh my God. You’re Y/N. That’s his daughter.”
“Okay, Y/N,” said the doctor as someone wrapped you up in the world’s warmest blanket. You sighed and smiled for a brief moment, the doctor snapping his fingers. “Y/N, I need you to pay very special attention to me.”
“Okay,” you said, the blanket peeled away as someone started cutting off your shirt. “Excuse me. Buy me dinner first.”
“I’ll take that as a good sign,” said the doctor, your eyes going to a bag of blood flowing into your dad. “Whatever you do, do not unclamp your fingers inside of him, understand? I bet it’s getting painful and you might start cramping. You gotta hold on a little while longer for us, okay?”
“Not a problem,” you said. You felt a table be moved behind you and you were guided to kneel back on it. They started cutting off your dad’s clothes and you shut your eyes. “A little warning would be nice.”
“Keep ‘em closed,” he said. You were too worried to notice much when you felt your own clothes go, a gown tugged and buttoned on you. “Alright.”
You opened your eyes, a blanket over your dad’s lap. The main doctor examined the wound your hand was in, some other ones looking at his leg and head. You saw your dad flutter open his eyeballs, jerking his whole body when he looked around.
“Jensen. I’m Dr. Bradwick. You were in an accident. Your daughter, Y/N, is right here with us and she’s helping us help you right now so let’s keep the moving to a minimum and he’s out again,” said the doctor, your dad’s eyes closing once more. “Y/N, climb back on if you’re able to. I want a scan and then send these two up to the OR. Y/N, you’re going to have to go into the operating room like this and when the surgeon tells you to remove your hand, that’s when you do it, not a second before, understand?”
“Yes,” you said.
“You have some extensive injuries yourself. You’re in shock right now which is why you’re not feeling them. Your shoulder is dislocated, you’ve suffered blood loss yourself and have signs of a high grade concussion. When you let go, you’re going to get put back on a stretcher and then we’re going to take you for a few scans yourself, alright?”
“Is he gonna die?” you asked, wrapped up in the warm blanket once again, one tossed over the bottom half of your dad.
“We’ll do our best,” he said. You nodded and after a few bandages were slapped on the two of you, you went down a few hallways, someone on either side of you keeping you steady. The shakes in your body were dying down as you warmed up some and you took your hand away from your wrist and gave one of your dad’s a squeeze.
It was small but you felt a finger move slightly.
You smiled to yourself as the blankets were taken away and someone put a big lead vest on you, covering most of your body and neck. You heard a buzzing and they took a picture of his torso, taking a few more of his leg and head too before you felt one of your shoulder be done.
“Alright, let’s send these two up,” said a nurse that stepped out. Five minutes later you were sat in the middle of an OR, people hooking up leads and things to your dad as he got more fresh blood in him. He was pale still and you squeezed his hand, not feeling any response. You scrunched up your face but a nurse directed you to look at a monitor. His heart rate and breathing were slow but they were still there.
“Good evening, everybody,” said a woman in a pair of dark blue scrubs. A pair of gloves were snapped on her and she smiled as she walked over. “Nice, cold, gloomy night out. So you must be the smart cookie, Y/N. I’m Dr. Bradwick.”
“I thought he was downstairs,” you said as she went over to a set of scans on the wall and started looking them over.
“That’s my husband,” she said with a hum. “Freddie, how’s the leg look?”
“Clean break,” said a younger man in light blue scrubs. “Needs to be set, a think a few pins and a stitch will do.”
“I agree. Bleeding?” she asked.
“Under control,” he said.
“Good. Once we have Jensen’s torso available, you can take lead on fixing the leg,” she said. “Head wound is superficial. We have a severed artery, right side of body. Let’s open, clamp what we can and then give Y/N’s hand a break,” she said. She wandered back over to the operating table, examining the wound. “Did you have any hand injuries?”
“Scratches was all. I put hand sanitizer on first if that helps,” you said.
“It actually does some. Y/N, you’re gonna sit right there until I tell you otherwise, alright? It’s probably gonna be a little bit longer but hopefully we can get your dad feeling better,” she said. “Let’s put him under.”
“What are his odds?” you asked. “Honestly.”
“The amount of time you’ve been holding him together, the previous blood loss, the lack of blood flow...real talk, it really depends on how much of a mess he is in there and how much he fights for it. He’s in the beginning stages of hypothermia which may hurt him or may help him. The human body is tricky. We will do what we can but I can’t guarantee he gets up from this table. He’s still awake. If you want to say anything before he goes under, say it now,” she said.
“Remember when I said I didn’t want a dad? But I’d take a Jensen? I wanted one. I was afraid. But then I wasn’t, because I tried, for you and for me. If you can’t do this dad, it’s okay. If I don’t, if I don’t talk to you for a really, really long time again or ever again, it’s okay. All you have to do right now is try. Just try to stick around as hard as you can. I love you,” you said. The room was quiet and you sniffled, giving the doctor a nod.
“Alright. Let’s get to work.”
Twenty minutes later your hand was shaking, cramps rippling through it, the doctor giving you a sideways glance.
“Y/N. In a moment I’m going to have you release your hand,” she said. “When that happens, I want you to remove your hand as quickly but gently as you can. Don’t touch any of the other clamps. Owen and Derren here are then going to move you onto the table right by my right side. They’re going to move you away quickly and then you’ll be taken to the OR across the hall to repair your injuries. Understand?”
“Yeah,” you said, squeezing your eyes shut. “I’m dizzy.”
“I know. One more minute,” she said. “Everyone in your positions.”
She looked around for a moment before looking up at you.
“On three, let go. One, two, three.”
You unsqueezed your fingers and pulled your hand out, wincing at the sudden pain. You felt yourself get moved and collapsed onto the table, your head swimming. The last thing you caught sight of was the floor before you were passing out completely.
When you woke up, you were in a room, a doctor writing something down on the chart at the end of the bed. You were alone aside from the other empty bed, your arm in a sling and it felt like you were laying on a wad of bandages.
“I wasn’t expecting you awake so soon,” he said. He took out a flashlight from his pocket and held up a finger. You followed it and he smiled. “Good. Your concussion appears to be doing better.”
“I passed out,” you said.
“From exhaustion, not a head injury. Your shoulder was put back in place and we discovered a few deep lacerations along your back that required stitches. You were treated for hypothermia, shock and a concussion as well. You got close to the hairy edge, Y/N,” he said. “You need extensive rest.”
“Where’s my dad,” you said.
“He’s recovering from surgery in the ICU. He’s quite weak,” he said. You sat up and closed your eyes. “You can see him later.”
“Buddy, I’m seeing him right now,” you said, swinging your legs off the edge of the bed.
“No, you’re not. He’s not even conscious at the moment.”
“Where’s Dr. Bradwick?”
“In the ER.”
“The other one. The surgeon,” you said. You tried to stand but he put his hand on your shoulder. “Buddy. Back off.”
“Dr. Kappers. A word,” said Dr. Bradwick as she popped in the door. She left with him and returned after a moment, giving you a smile. “Sorry about that. He’s not known for his bedside manner.”
“Can I see my dad?”
“I’ll do you one better. We’ll get you set up in his room,” she said.
“Thanks,” you said. You sat back on the bed and she undid a few things, soon pushing you out of the room and over to some elevators. “Is he okay?”
“He’s not great but surgery was a success. He’s going to need to take things slow for the next while,” she said. “You saved his life you know.”
“A physician’s assistant came to my school once to talk about careers. He told us a story about clamping an artery shut with his fingers. I guess I kind of remembered,” you said.
“I think Jensen owes you one for that,” she said, pushing you inside. She hit a button to go up and smiled. “How are you feeling?”
“Okay,” you said. “Tired.”
“Those men that brought you in showed the police where your vehicle was. I believe your belongings are at the local sheriff’s office,” she said. “Oh and we were able to get your father’s contact information. Your mom was called and she let your husband know. They’re both on their way up from the states,” she said.
“Oh God, TJ,” you said, running your hands over your face. “He’s gotta be a nervous wreck right now.”
“Nothing wrong with having a husband that cares,” she said, the door dinging open. “Alright, I know you’re gonna jump out of bed and go over to your dad the second I leave the room but I don’t want you sleeping in a chair tonight. Got it? I will send my husband to come check on his lunch break if I have to.”
“I maybe promise?” you said.
“I like you,” she said, pushing you down the hall, pausing outside a door. “He should look a lot better than last time you saw him.”
She moved the bed inside a room, your dad asleep in the bed by the window. He had a cast on his right leg and a bandage around his head, a lot of leads and tubes running from him to machines close by but the blood was gone and he did look a lot more alive now.
“Thanks, Dr. Bradwick,” you said.
“I was in a car accident with my dad when I was a kid. I get it,” she said. She plugged in a few things for you and said a nurse would be in soon to get an IV in you. You hummed when she left, getting out of bed and grabbing a chair by the window, pulling it over to him.
“Hey, dad,” you said, grabbing his hand. “Mom’s on her way and TJ too. They’re gonna smother us. That’s okay. I’m gonna stay right here until they get here though.”
For a moment you felt extremely tired and rested your head down on his unharmed leg. You used your good arm as a cushion as well, closing your eyes. Something tickled your head and your turned, seeing his hand trying to move on top of it. He didn’t open his eyes but you moved it for him, a brief smile crossing his lips.
“S’okay. Go back to sleep, dad.”
He half hummed and you felt yourself drifting off, a small gasp of air above you occurring.
“Not dead?” he murmured.
“No, not dead,” you said.
“Good.”
He was out like a light again and you smiled, a nurse walking in. She shook her head and got you up to your feet, helping you back in bed.
“Can he have an extra blanket?” you asked as she stuck the needle in. She went to a closet in the room and took one out, spread it out over him lightly, finding another one and putting it over you. She pressed a button on the little machine for the IV and you felt the pain meds kick in, sending you to sleep quickly.
When you woke up, it was morning and your leg felt very hot. You blinked a few times, spotting a black tuft of hair curled up by it. You blinked again, recognizing the navy henley and the way the hair stuck up in the back. You smiled as you ran your hand over his head, TJ slowly waking up before jolting upright and giving you the biggest hug he dared.
“Hey, babe,” you said with a quiet laugh. “Miss me?”
“Never do that again,” he said. You cupped his cheek and smiled, a wave of relief crashing over him.
“I’ll try,” you said. You looked to your right, your mom sitting by your dad’s side, watching him sleep. She got up when she saw you awake, walking over and hugging you. “Hi, mom.”
“TJ’s right. Never do that again,” she said.
“We’re fine,” you said. “It looks worse than it is.”
“The doctors told us what happened,” she said. You turned away, smiling at TJ.
“Where are the kids?” you asked.
“JJ watched them last night and the Pads were taking them today,” he said. “Zepp flew home. Jared picked him up at the airport.”
“Sorry for ruining your guys trip,” you said, your mom shaking her head.
“It’s fine. We’ll go on another one. I’m just glad you two are still here,” she said.
“We’re fine.”
“He should be dead. Maybe even you,” she said. “Please do not say you’re fine.”
“Mom. Last night was quite possibly the most traumatic thing that’s ever happened to me. I don’t even know how to describe...I’m not gonna tell you everything that went down or was said. Dad is alive and so am I. We’ll get better. I’ll be better really soon even. It’s all there is to it.”
“They said you had your hand in him,” said TJ.
“Yes, I did. Not as exciting as it sounds,” you said.
“Hurt like a bitch though,” you heard chuckled from the bed nearby. All three of you turned towards him, getting a sleepy smile in response. “I’m starving. We never got dinner.”
“I will go find you guys some food, pronto,” said TJ. He gave you a kiss before he left, your mom returning to her seat and staring at your dad.
“I’m fine,” he said, getting a hug and kiss from her.
“Don’t go yet,” she said quietly.
“Not going anywhere, honey,” he said. He looked over at you and smiled. “Not if I can help it.”
Two Months Later
“I’m going to grab another beer,” said TJ. He got up from his seat around the fire pit in the backyard and you waved a finger, your dad giving one as well.
“De, mind grabbing some stuff to make hotdogs?” he asked.
“Not at all,” she said. They both head inside the house, your dad quiet as you both watched the fire. He scratched his stomach and you saw him lift up his shirt, glancing at the red line across his abdomen.
“You could get a tattoo,” you said. “To cover it up.”
“It doesn’t bother me,” he said. “What does bother me is the fact you risked your life for mine. You have children.”
“So do you.”
“Y/N. You’re young. You have your entire life ahead of you.”
“Adults have feelings, dad. You don’t get to love me more than I love you. You don’t get to put a cap on that for me. I am a parent. I do understand where you’re coming from. I do. But abandoning and giving up on you was not going to happen.”
“Why the hell not?”
“Because you didn’t give up on me.”
He looked down to his lap, pursing his lips.
“I hope we’re never in that kind of situation again but dad, I can’t promise you how I’m going to act. I know it’s your job to protect me. Don’t be mad at me for doing it back every once in a while is all.”
“I’m not mad, kiddo. I just want you safe.”
“Me too,” you said. He gave a quick smile, slumping down in his chair. “You busy tomorrow night?”
“No. Why?”
“I’m gonna take you out for our dinner we never had,” you said.
“Just us?”
“Just us,” you said. “That okay?”
“Yeah. I’m looking forward to it,” he said. You tucked your feet up under you, closing your eyes briefly. “Thanks for saving me.”
“You did it first,” you said.
“There’s my sap,” he chuckled.
“Shut up, dork,” you said, rolling your eyes.
“You’re still smiling,” he said, hearing the backdoor open. “You good, kiddo?”
“Yeah. I’m good, dad.”
You smiled and looked down, spotting a big looking bug by your feet. You jumped out of your chair and he laughed, getting to his feet and stepping on it with his shoe. You looked around for any more, a grin spreading across his cheeks.
“What?” you said, brushing yourself off.
“I still got it,” he said, taking a seat and pulling you down into the chair with him. “No creepy crawlies over here.”
“There better not be,” you said as TJ and your mom returned.
You weren’t too hungry for a hotdog but you took a bite of TJ’s after he’d cooked one over the fire. After a little while the four of you grew quiet and a few crackles of the fire filled the night air.
“I’m exhausted. I’m going to head up to bed,” said your mom with a yawn.
“Night,” you said.
“We won’t keep Jensen up too long,” said TJ.
“Rascals,” he said. “I’ll be in soon, honey.”
Your mom hummed as she headed up into the house and TJ slumped down in his chair, watching the fire. He wiped at his face after a moment and started rubbing his eyes. You shifted a bit to get a better view but he kept rubbing.
“Get some ash in there?” asked your dad. He just shook his head and you sat up.
“Babe,” you said as it hit you. “He’s crying.”
“Am not,” said TJ, his voice giving him away.
“Hey,” said your dad. “Come here.”
TJ shook his head and your dad got up, dragging TJ over to the other side of the oversized chair. You turned to your side, TJ looking out to the yard.
“Hey,” said your dad again. “If you won’t look at me, at least look at your wife.”
TJ sniffled and turned his head over to you with a swallow. He looked at your dad quickly before settling back on you.
“What’s wrong, buddy?” asked your dad, putting his arm around his shoulders.
“It just hit me right then that if that truck hadn’t shown up, neither one of you would have been in that chair and I’d...you guys can’t leave De and me alone like that. We’d be wrecks and there’s no way my parents would ever...my dad would be yelling at me for crying right now,” said TJ, wiping off his face again.
“It’s alright,” said your dad, giving him a hug. TJ started to calm down and you cleaned off your face, finding TJ’s hand and giving it a squeeze. “Boys...guys...there ain’t nothing manly or tough about not crying. It’s healthy. Don’t be embarrassed, TJ. You never have to be afraid to do that in front of me, okay? I love you kid. We like to rag on one another but we love each other too. You have an amazing girl. She’s stronger than she looks. You’re stronger than you think you are too. So if it ever went bad, you’re gonna be okay. I promise.”
TJ nodded and your dad moved his other arm back around you, pulling you both into his sides.
“You feel any better?” he asked.
“Yeah,” said TJ. “Y/N’s been telling me it’s okay to get upset over the accident. I should have listened.”
“Normally it’s a wise move to listen to your wife,” he chuckled. “Thomas.”
He looked up at that, your dad’s face a little more hard.
“Are you still not speaking to your dad?” he asked.
“Not really. He asked if you guys were okay about a month ago but that was it.”
“TJ...I think it’s time you, me and your dad sat down and had a talk.”
“Why?”
“Because somehow he helped make you and a part of me has to believe that if he’s half as good as you are, it’s worth having a hard conversation.”
“He’s not like you,” said TJ, shaking his head. “He won’t be happy.”
“It doesn’t matter if he’s happy or not. I will make that very clear to him. You want to disagree with your child, that is okay. But Y/N, she’s not afraid to talk to me. A long time ago, before you were around, she was. She was afraid of me and I was afraid of her. There was a lot of crying and a lot of hard conversations, TJ. But that is why we got to the place where we are. You and I had one of those once and after that, things started to change between us, didn’t it. We’ve had conversations since about the big stuff and the little stuff. I am happy to be your dad, TJ. I am and I’m proud to be that to you. But as a dad, we’re going to have that talk with your dad, the three of us, and we’re going to give him an opportunity that he might not understand that he needs with you right now. Understand?”
“Yes,” he said with a nod.
“Good boy,” he said, kissing his temple and giving you one as well.
“I can’t imagine what he was saying when you guys were like, dying,” said TJ. You looked at your dad and smiled, getting one in return.
“Oh, we were totally cool,” he said. You rolled your eyes and rested your head on his shoulder. “Weren’t we?”
“Oh, totally,” you said.
“Liars,” said TJ. You laughed and heard him let out a quiet chuckle.
“Okay?” asked your dad. TJ nodded and you heard him shift, your dad leaning back in the seat. “TJ.”
“Hm?”
“Go take your girl to bed. She’s worried and wants to cuddle you,” he said.
“Dad,” you said.
“It’s true.”
“In a minute,” you said, giving him a hug. TJ reached over and gave him one as well, you dad ruffling both your heads.
“I love you guys too. Now shoo,” he said. “It’s pretty late.”
TJ hopped up and took care of the fire with your dad. He helped him slowly make his way up to the house while you held the door open.
“How’s your leg today?” you asked.
“Glad to be out of the cast,” he said. “I gotta start a running plan next week or something to work the muscles back up. I’m so not looking forward to it.”
“I bet you are,” you said. “Night dad.”
“Night kiddos,” he said. “Y/N.”
You held back as TJ headed for your old bedroom, your dad grabbing a book off the coffee table.
“Have TJ read this. It’s for a spouse when their partner goes through a traumatic event. Spouses can get a form of PTSD without realizing it,” he said.
“You think…” you said, nodding back.
“I’m not sure. I got it for mom and it made her feel a little better. It might help him too,” he said.
“Thanks,” you said. “Dad.”
“Mhm?”
“Go let mom take care of you, hm? Maybe not be a grump about it?” you said.
“Back at ya,” he said. “Night, tall munchkin.”
“Night, dad. Love you.”
“Love you too, kiddo.”

semi-translating/summarizing some things p’boss said on the hardest brief podcast. putting it under the cut because it ended up being wayyy longer than expected. also, my thai knowledge is that of a little kid who left her country very young so i probably missed some words/references, sorry!
(i got lazy and skipped the last part where they talked about the props and the colors (red = oh-aew, blue = teh, purple = tarn) but i feel like enough folks on here have done the color/visual analysis so we should be good):
he had this story he wanted to tell about two childhood friends and also knew he wanted to cast pp and billkin, but to make it work they had to pull from pp and billkin’s personalities to make sure that the characters they ended up creating would mesh with who pp and billkin are as performers; in writing the script, they sometimes asked pp and billkin to talk about their experiences as teenagers and adapted it to the series, so for example the storyline where teh and oh-aew meet each other again at afterschool chinese class and start out not liking each other, comes from pp and billkin’s real life when they first met and didn’t like each other
the interviewer asked p’boss to talk about how the itsay team has balanced representation in terms of gender and sexual orientation, and p’boss said it was important to have a team that understands the human experience and can draw from life experiences from multiple perspectives, which led to diversity in gender, sexual orientation, and age
when asked whether itsay is a Y series (BL), p’boss said his intention is to tell a story about the relationship between two boys, so it depends on how you define what counts as BL, LGBTQ, etc.
the interviewer and p’boss had this conversation about what characterizes something as BL, and the interviewer said after asking around it seemed like BL is about relationships between boys but more from a fantasy lens and tends to be different from gay couples in real life, and focuses on scenes between the two male leads, scenes that make you “pinch your pillow” (op: like scenes that make you squeal), but not so much on other moments outside of that; p’boss’s response (approximate translation): “i’m not sure myself, but from what i know, BL series seem to be about relationships between boys, but from the perspectives of girls, since that tends to be the target audience. so it tends to be what makes girls happy, what entertains them, that ends up being the content of BL.”
p’boss on lgbtq series: “i think it looks deeply at the real lives of people who are lgbt, it might be more realistic. it might be like, this is a real thing, but when you tell it in a series it becomes dark, but it’s real. in terms of itsay, in the beginning i didn’t know how to classify it, but when a lot of people started calling it lgbt, i thought, okay. [...] it’s just the story i wanted to tell, and i wanted to tell it with as much humanity as possible. i don’t want to limit viewers, i want as many people to see this as possible, so we can call it whatever they want as long as they watch it and it makes them happy.”
this is his first series focusing on lgbtq characters, but in hormones he wrote goi and dao’s characters (op: i didn’t know this?!)
with itsay, p’boss said it was important to him to have slower pacing to explore the intricacies of the emotions in each scene (different types of anger, different ways of sulking, different types of happy, different types of crying), making it somewhat different from my ambulance where things had to move more quickly to keep up with the speed of a tv drama
the interviewer asked “how does having two male leads change how you work?” and p’boss said there’s nothing different in the way you build chemistry between the two characters because you would just pull from their personalities, but the difference is in the conflict of the story which involves confusion and questioning about sexual orientation which a straight couple wouldn’t go through
p’boss: “when we think about how teh is the kind of person who doesn’t say what he’s thinking, or how oh-aew is the kind of person who’s upfront, anyone can play those roles--women, men, gay people, trans people can all have these roles.”
the interviewer said “itsay seems to be expanding the scope of lgbtq narratives by presenting it as easier for the characters to come out and say they love someone of the same sex. for example, especially compared to love of siam where the kiss scene between mario and pchy was considered something shocking, or in hormones, with the relationship between march and tou (phu and thee) where the characters spent a lot of time fighting with themselves about who they were attracted to. but in itsay, oh-aew was totally straightforward in saying he liked bas. do you think that’s because it’s easier and more open today?” p’boss: “i think the content changes depending on the generations, and oh-aew is really of today’s generation. it’s not that there are no longer kids who are confused about their sexual orientation or afraid to come out, even if ten or twenty years pass there will probably still be some kids who experience that. but there are people who are open and happy about how they live their lives. oh-aew is the type of lgbtq character that’s like, ‘i’m gay, and i’m proud to be who i am.’ [...] and it’s very positive that he sees himself as equal to straight people, because when we’re born, we can love anyone. if you’re a man, you can love another man and that’s a normal thing. that’s oh-aew’s attitude: i’m lgbtq, i’m gay, i’m proud, my parents accept me, and i can tell anyone confidently who i can love. i think a lot of people in this generation already see this as something normal, and we really need to make it something that’s equal. oh-aew represents that equality.”
p’boss on teh: “teh is a character who seems to come from older societal expectations where he’s a man, and he has to love women. but there are people who do still think this way. for teh, it’s hard for him to accept that he might like boys, but when he finds out oh-aew likes boys, he’s totally fine with it and sees it as normal. i feel like society needs to progress to this point, and beyond it, because it all has to be seen as normal. a lot of people when they talk about gay people they say there has to be a top and a bottom, but in reality anything can work, love can happen however. one day i could date someone who’s a trans woman, that’s possible, because it’s about feelings. or a woman who has always loved men could one day date a woman, that’s possible too. there’s a lot of freedom, and i want the characters to show that.”
they talked about how in the scene where teh pretends to hit on oh-aew in front of all their friends, the friends are shocked not that teh is attracted to guys, but they’re shocked that teh likes someone in the friend group. and that goes to show that it’s normal for someone to like someone of the same sex, whereas 20 years ago maybe the characters would have reacted in confusion or shock.
p’boss talking about what was challenging about making this series: “in terms of writing the script, we had to think about how to tell the story in a way that shows the characters’ emotions at all times. for example in episode 2, we explored the restlessness that teh feels when he’s confused about he feels jealous or possessive of his friend. when we say it like that, it’s relatable to people who know what it’s like to feel possessive of their best friend, but how to execute that on the screen is a different matter.”
why phuket? p’boss: “when i decided to tell a story about two boys, i wanted the atmosphere to be romantic. even if the story isn’t romantic, like two boys who are best friends eating together, but i wanted the visuals to be romantic that it looks like it could be a romance film. it intrigues the viewers and adds a certain sweetness to it. i wanted a good environment, so i searched in a lot of different provinces. at first i went to ayutthaya, mae hong son, chiang mai, chiang rai, songkhla. but when i talked to the team, one person wanted to go to the mountains, another wanted to go to the cape, another wanted to go to the beach. even if there’s a beach there has to be a city. we wanted everything, and phuket has it all. old town has a city feel, but there’s also the beach and mountains, so we decided to go to down to phuket while we were writing the script, to confirm whether it would actually work. i’m from hatyai, so i’m from the south, but i rarely ever went to phuket so i wasn’t sure if it would work.”
p’boss said filming the underwater kiss was difficult because there needed to be sunlight in order to capture everything in the way they wanted, but when they got to the island, there was no sun and it was about to rain. so they looked up the color of luck/success for that day and it was purple (op: i don’t have context for this so i can’t explain further lol), so they told everyone to wear a purple shirt. the day they went to film the scene, they all wore purple shirts, but when they got to the site it looked like it was about to rain, so p’yong took off his shirt and hung it on the boat, and as they were filming, every time they said “action” the sun would come out and every time they said “cut” the sun would go away, and p’boss said it was magical and that’s how it came out to be the scene we saw.

I just realized I didn’t post that 2007 Rolling Stone article I posted about here.
Billie Joe Armstrong
The Green Day leader talks Bush, Britney and being a middle-aged punk for our 40th anniversary.
DAVID FRICKE
Posted Nov 01, 2007 8:19 AM
You have two young sons. What kind of America will they inherit?
This war has to finish before something new blossoms. There's no draft — that's why none of the kids give a shit. They'd rather watch videos on YouTube. It's hard to tell what's next — there is so much information out there with no power to it. Everything is in transition, including our government. Next year, it's someone else in the White House. There's no way to define anything. It's Generation Zero. But you gotta start at zero to get to something.
Is there anyone now running for president who gives you hope for the future?
Barack Obama, but it's a bit early to tell if this is the guy I like. I get sick of the religious-figure thing. People don't question their rulers, these political figures, just as they don't question their ministers and priests. They're not going to question George Bush, especially if he goes around talking about God — "I'm going to let God decide this for me. He's going to give me the answer." The fear of God keeps people silent.
When did you first vote in a presidential election?
In 1992. I was twenty. I voted for Clinton.
Did you feel like you made a difference?
Yeah. The Eighties sucked. There was so much bullshit that went along with that decade. I felt like Clinton was a fresh face with fresh ideas. There were times when he was dropping bombs, and I'm thinking, "What the fuck are you doing?" But he became a target. We have this puritanical vision of what a leader is supposed to be, and that's what makes us the biggest hypocrites in the world. We got so inside this guy's sexual habits. Now we have a president going around, killing in the name of what? In the name of nothing.
What did you accomplish with your 2004 anti-Bush album, "American Idiot"? He was re-elected anyway, and the war in Iraq is still going on.
I found a voice. There may have been people disenfranchised by it. People have a hard time with that kind of writing: "Why are you preaching to me?" It does sound preachy, a bit. I'm a musician, and I want to say positive things. If it's about self-indulgent depression or overthrowing the government, it's gotta come from my heart. And when you say "Fuck George W. Bush" in a packed arena in Texas, that's an accomplishment, because you're saying it to the unconverted.
Do you think selling nearly 6 million copies of that album might have an effect on the 2008 election? A kid who bought it at fifteen will be voting age next year.
I hope so. I made it to give people a reason to think for themselves. It was supposed to be a catalyst. Maybe that's one reason why it's difficult for me to write about politics now. A lot of things on that record are still relevant. It's like we have this monarchy in politics — the passing of the baton between the Clintons and the Bushes. That's frightening. What needs to happen is a complete change, a person coming from the outside with a new perspective on all the fucked-up problems we have.
How would you describe the state of pop culture?
People want blood. They want to see other people thrown to the lions. Do audiences want rock stars? I can't tell. You have information coming at you from so many areas — YouTube, the Internet, tabloids. Watching Britney Spears the other night [on the MTV Video Music Awards] was like watching a public execution. How could the people at MTV, the people around her, not know this girl was fucked up? People came in expecting a train wreck, and they got more than they bargained for.
She was a willing conspirator. She didn't say no.
She is a manufactured child. She has come up through this Disney perspective, thinking that all life is about is to be the most ridiculous star you could be. But it's also about what we look at as entertainment — watching somebody go through that.
How do you decide what your children can see on TV or the Internet? As a dad, even a punk-rock dad, that can make you conservative in your choices.
I want to protect them from garbage. It's not necessarily the sex and drugs. It's bad drugs and bad sex, the violence you see on television and in the news. I want to protect them from being desensitized. I want them to realize this is real life, not a video game.
The main thing I want them to have is a good education, because that's something I never had. Get smart. Educate yourself as much as you can, and get as much out of it, even if the teacher is an asshole.
Do you regret dropping out of high school?
Life in high school sucks. I bucked the system. I also got lucky. My wife has a degree in sociology, and there are conversations she has — I don't have a fucking clue what they're talking about. College — I could have learned from that.
But I was the last of six kids. At that point, my mother was fifty-eight, and she threw up her hands — "I'm through with this parenting thing." Also, I could not handle authority figures. But I wouldn't say I'm an authority figure for my kids. I provide guidelines, not rules.
What is it like being a middle-aged punk? Isn't that a contradiction in terms?
It's about the energy you bring with you, the pulse inside your head. I want to get older. I don't want to be twenty-one again. Screw that. My twenties were a difficult time — where my band was at, getting married, having a child. I remember walking out of a gig in Chicago, past these screaming kids. There were these punks, real ones, sitting outside our tour bus. One girl had a forty-ouncer, and she goes, "Billie Joe, come drink with us." I said, "I can't, I've got my family on the bus." She goes, "Well, fuck you then." I get on the bus, and my wife says, "Did that bitch just tell you to fuck off? I'm gonna kick her ass right now." I'm holding her back, while my child is naked, jumping on the couch: "Hi, Daddy!" That was my whole life right there — screaming kids, punks telling me to fuck off, my wife getting pissed, my naked son waiting to get into his pajamas.
There's nothing wrong with being twenty-one. It's the lessons you learn. At thirty, you think, "Why did I worry so much about this shit?" When I hit forty, I'll say the same thing: "Why did I worry about this shit in my thirties?"
What have you learned about yourself?
There is more to life than trying to find your way through self-destruction or throwing yourself into the fire all the time. Nihilism in punk rock can be a cliché. I need to give myself more room to breathe, to allow my thoughts to catch up with the rest of me.
Before Dookie, I wasn't married and I didn't have kids. I had a guitar, a bag of clothes and a four-track recorder. There are ways you don't want to change. You don't want to lose your spark. But I need silence more than I did before. I need to get away from the static and noise, whereas before, I thrived on it.
Are you ready for the end of the music business? The technology and its effect on sales have changed dramatically since Green Days' debut EP — on vinyl — in 1989.
Technology now and the way people put out records — everything comes at you so fast, you don't know what you're investigating. You can't identify with it — at least I can't. With American Idiot, we made a conscious effort to give people an experience they could remember for the rest of their lives. It wasn't just the content. It was the artwork, the three acts — the way you could read it all like someone's story.
Is music simply not important to young people now the way it was to you as a kid?
People get addicted to garbage they don't need. At shows, they gotta talk on their phones to their friend who's in the next aisle. I was watching this documentary on Jeff Tweedy of Wilco [Sunken Treasure]. He was playing acoustic, and he ends up screaming at the audience: "Your fucking conversation can wait. I'm up here singing a song — get involved." He wasn't being an asshole. He was like, "Leave your bullshit behind. Let's celebrate what's happening now."
We need music, and we need it good. I took it very seriously. There's a side of me where music will always send chills up my spine, make me cry, make me want to get up and do Pete Townshend windmills. In a lot of ways, I was in a minority when I was young. There are people who go, "Oh, that's a snappy tune." I listen to it and go, "That's the greatest fucking song ever. That is the song I want played at my funeral."
Now that you've brought it up, what song do you want played at your funeral?
It keeps changing. "Life on Mars?" by David Bowie. "In My Life," by the Beatles. "Love," by John Lennon.
Those are all reflective ballads, not punk.
I disagree. They are all honest in their reflection. The punk bands I liked were the ones who didn't fall into clichés — the Clash, the Ramones. The Ramones wrote beautiful love songs. They also invented punk rock. I'd have to add "Blitzkrieg Bop" to the list.
What is the future of punk rock? Will it still be a voice of rebellion in twenty years?
It's categorized in so many different ways. You've got the MySpace punks. But there is always the subculture of it — the rats in the walls, pounding the pavement and booking their own live shows. It comes down to the people who are willing to do something different from everybody else.
You are in a different, platinum-album world now. What makes you so sure that spirit survives?
I'm going on faith — because I was there. Gilman Street [the Berkeley, California, club where Green Day played early shows] is still around. And that's a hard task, because there is no bar — it's a nonprofit cooperative. It's like a commune — this feeling of bucking the system together, surviving and thriving on art. Punk, as an underground, pushes for the generation gap. As soon as you're twenty-five years old, there's a group of sixteen-year-olds coming to kick your ass. And you have to pass the torch on. It's a trip to have seen it happen so many times. It gives me goose bumps — punk is something that survives on its own.

Unsolicited Book Reviews (n5): Wife to theKingmaker
Rating:
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
Even before I had an account I had a tendency to go to tumblr to see people’s opinions before buying a histfic novel. Certain books are either severely underrepresented where I feel like there needs to be something on them, whereas others that are talked about enough - something more can still be said. So for my quarantine fun, I had decided to start a series where I review every medieval historical fiction novel I read. Hopefully, it will either start interesting discussions or at least be some help for those browsing its tag when considering purchasing it.
TL;DR: Ok swear to god this book was written by two different people. The ending was actually heart-wrenching, but so much had annoyed me throughout that I swore to myself to never again touch this genre for my own health. Twas an odd tale, and tbh the fact that it was odd probably elevated it from the 2 stars (or hell maybe even 1 if it was going to get any more richardian) to 3. Honestly, quite glad I read it in the end. Not the most historically informative, but some of the character arcs were actually quite neat (however extremely farfetched). Spoiler Warning: I’m going to divulge a lot on here because I know no one who follows me is going to read this book.
Plot: Ok, the plot... It was only after I placed my order that I realised this is the Sandra Heath Wilson of ‘Cicely’s King’ fame. I cringed and didn’t know what to do. For all you innocents out there... her Cicely series is a saga wherein Cecily of York pretty much bangs everyone who is male and from the house of york (minus her father and uncle George) and Even Henry VII(!!). She then has this kid by Richard III, calls him Leo and the rest is history(this is what I gleaned from goodreads). Nevertheless it had already shipped and honestly I had it coming; the synopsis does say she has an affair with her brother-in-law John Marquis of Montagu. Whatever, I couldn’t resist buying the only novel about Anne Beauchamp, and since it was published in the 70s/80s I knew it would at least be flamboyant and go all out. It delivered enough for it to have been worth reading.
So the novel follows Anne Beauchamp!(Nan) from when she is a 13 year old girl to 1478 when she finally leaves Beaulieu to go live at Middleham with her (as you guessed it- favourite) daughter Anne and her oh so belovéd son-in-law Richard Duke of Gloucester - You see? Since now finally the Great Other (Mr George) is finally vanquished England has its peace. Of course this is not true, Nan historically left the abbey in 1473 for Middleham and while I wanted a possible explanation from the author (who I would assume is better researched than I) for whether she went to Middleham out of her own volition or simply because the King trusted Gloucester better than Clarence... alas I got none. It was all pinned on the fact that the evil George (who as per usual alternates between omnipotent mastermind to absolute drunken himbo at the turn of a page) would not have her free for as long as she lived (for whatever reason). I really think the real historical explanation was because Edward trusted Gloucester - because after all Warwick Castle was Nan’s patrimony not Middleham. I doubt Nan had a choice in the matter but, the point is, Isabel was alive in 1473 and since there’s zero historical record or suggestion that Nan and Anne had ever seen her again, it would have been nice to have had a depiction of the conflicted feelings or a final meeting written for the three women. I’ll let it slide I guess, after all, one needs to cut some slack when it comes to books written pre-internet age by non-historians. And unlike Sunne in Splendour, this book does not purport to be completely accurate or a representation of the truth.
Christ some sub-plots were truly unexpected. One that made me groan at first was the whole arc between Nan and her niece Eleanor Butler. In this book she’s her ward (not historically true) and little Eleanor is all sweet and innocent and virtuous and, hell, at one point we get more Nan-Eleanor interaction than even between Nan - her own daughters (particularly Isabel who would have been the right age and a better substitute for Eleanor in their dialogue, but alas, who cares about Isabel right?). Eleanor even is the one to accidentally discover that Margaret of Anjou slept with Edmund Beaufort, siring Edward of Lancaster.
Ok. You’re probably thinking, god how trite eugh the Richardians are at it again, right? Yeah ok the Richardians are at it again, but it turns into something really neat at the end. Essentially, as I said, Nan has an affair with John Neville Marquis of Montagu (long story that I will expand on in characterisation) and she and him come upon Edward and Eleanor (overhearing them nothing more). So Edward and Nan then have this mutually assured destruction between them, because Edward divulges that he saw Nan and John years later when Nan confronts him (by this time he is married to Elizabeth Woodville) that she knows about the pre-contract with the intention of telling him off. He tells her that if she dares tell Warwick about the pre-contract he will tell Warwick about John, so she then agrees (also because she promised her niece that she would keep it quiet for the safety of her son by Edward). Years later when they meet again, Edward realised how much is at stake for Nan (especially since it turned out she loved Warwick all along and Edward figured that out), and so, during the period of John’s back-and-forth loyalties (we know he was disgruntled by the loss of the Northumberland Earldom)... Edward returns and tells Nan that if Montagu abandons him he will out her to Richard and cause a massive division between the brothers (militaristically speaking as well) and he knows he can do that because he figures out Nan will not out him because she blubbs about her promise to her niece. This madness then becomes bittersweet when (as history would have it) Montagu does end up fighting for Warwick, nevertheless, Nan is releaved during the whole time because there’s nothing in Warwick’s letters that give any indication that Edward ended up exposing her. Warwick dies in the battlefield, Nan is deeply aggrieved but happy he never found out at least. But then... years later when Edward comes to Beaulieu (1478 as this story would have it) to inform Nan that she may depart for Middleham, he tells her that he in fact did expose her to Warwick... but that Warwick didn’t believe him and laughed in his face because he thought there was no way she could be unfaithful because he knew she loved him. This sounds silly but it got to me a bit when I read it. Of course, we also have Edward saying he regretted his handling of the pre-contract affair because apparently Elizabeth Woodville had since lost interest in him and he’s hurt by how she shows no reaction to him having mistresses and he’s kinda given up, whereas Eleanor would have been more of a lapdog. This was essentially the centrepiece of the plot.
Look, I don’t really read these types of novels as a habit so I don’t know if bizarre plot lines like this are commonplace. Not going to lie though, it threw me and it was pleasantly enjoyable. This is basically what is to be said about the plot... the rest goes into characterisation. Nevertheless, this novel too often fell into the exposition trap (like telling us what is happening politically instead of showing us). While I appreciated the refresher of what happened 1445-1461 and I understand that the target audience of this book aren’t Wars of the Roses experts, I’ve seen it done more smoothly in many other more literary novels (eg Hawley Jarman’s or Lytton-Bulwer’s Last of the Barons). I’ve often said Sunne in Splendour was terribly dry and exposition-heavy, but at least it had historical detail so I could sometimes switch off and treat it as a non-fiction account for battles and character locations. But with this one I a) don’t have faith that the author paid attention to detail; see what I said earlier about the years 1473-1478, so I won’t take this as information and b) know that if she had done this with the years I know more about: 1461-1478, I would have gotten annoyed because of my familiarity with those decades.
Characterisation: Well we have lovelorn saintly Dickon here - always a pet peeve of mine. Look, I don’t have strong opinions about the man but it just innures me how whenever Richardianism rears it’s ugly head the plot suffers massively and it’s always favourite figures of mine that suffer the most. George Duke of Clarence... oh god, what can I say? Wife-beater, alcoholic, is disgusted by his wife when she is ill (you know, unlike the historical Clarence who had resided in the Abbot’s home near the infirmiary for the last months of his wife’s lying-in and after to be close to her and thereafter stuck with her until she passed away and two months after that as well), is stupid yet somehow still devious, is the indirect cause of her death... the list goes on. Welp, at least this Clarence unlike the Sunne in Splendour one has an elegant bearing, sense of fashion and is a great dancer. The Sunne one had NOTHING. It’s also odd that they make his attitude towards Isabel undergo a complete 180 as soon as he realises this marriage will no longer make him king. This makes no sense as the book has them want to marry for love, like YEARS before 1469, so this sudden attitude change makes no sense. Authors really need to be reminded that crown or no crown that marriage would still have made him the greatest magnate in England. There was also a ridiculous handling on the circumstance of his death, and this was the most factually wrong part of the book. Between Ankarette being aged down by 4 decades and the whole shmaz with Stillington, I don’t know where to begin. I bet most of you can guess how it was handled. Isabel is as per usual constantly depressed and without a personality because, well, we can’t have her compared to our shining heroine Anne Neville. 3x more beautiful, 5x more vivacious and 20x more significant than her doormat of a sister who complains all day- that is when she isn’t crying. Gahhh. Of course Anne Neville also cries but it’s for her beloved Dickon who she pines for constantly. Look, I have no qualms with romanticising this pairing, but authors need to keep in mind that Anne was like 13 at most when she became estranged from Gloucester. You. Need. To. Stop. Writing. Her. Like. A. Woman. . I don’t care what anyone says, no matter the time period, you can’t make me visualise a 13 year old that could feel romantic love of that deep a devotion and maturity and not send me laughing across the floor. But want to write a strong childish infatuation coming from a place of deep friendship? Fine by me.
Ok, onto more positive characterisation points: I liked Nan, quite a lot actually (I mean blatant daughter favouritism aside). A lot of authors attempt to write the proud noblewoman and great lady character but few pull it off. This is always how I have seen the real Anne Beauchamp and I’m glad to see it here. For a novel so insensitive towards certain figures, the author wrote Nan with great empathy. She was very intelligent but not in that artificial girlboss way, she loved her daughter(s) but in that medieval mother type of way (so no baby brain here), she may have not gotten along splendidly with all the women around her but there was none of that demeaning cattiness. About that, I want to say I was shocked by what a turn her relationship with Margaret of Anjou took. Since the whole Somerset-bastard child plotline was a thing... Nan was initially revolted and lost all her respect for Lancaster, but when the two women find themselves joined by fate they gain this strange mutual respect for one another. They butt heads a bit initially but Margaret of Anjou rises above it for her son’s sake and eventually strikes up an agreement with Nan on when they are to set sail. Margaret first won’t listen to Nan because she thinks she’s a fool but when she eventually slips by to tell Nan that she had thought about her plan and that maybe she’s right, she doesn’t apologise and Nan doesn’t need her to and it’s this weird telepathic understanding from then on and I certainly did not expect to see something like this in this novel. After the landing in England and news of Warwick’s death reaches the party, Margaret doesn’t gloat but diplomatically relays the news and when Nan says she wants to take sanctuary because she lost all heart and can’t fight on, Edward of Lancaster gently says something like: well if you come with us, you’ll at least get your revenge and that’s at least something (paraphrase). You could just tell this was Edward’s way of offering condolences, the type of way a child like him raised through war and promises of vengeance only could, and it was oddly powerful. Shame it couldn’t have happened as Nan and Margaret and Isabel all travelled at seperate times. The whole theme around Nan was that she wasn’t very partisan but only followed her husband as a magnate and then as a man, which I believe and it was great to see Team Lancaster understood Warwick was a seperate entity from York, and for all intents and purposes they were all in this together. Cool-headedness is much needed in this genre I realise, god how low flies the bar ~
Now onto the characterisation most people are wondering about. What of Warwick? He was the saving grace of the novel. He has the common touch yet he is sophisticated, he is idealistic yet he is shrewd, he is impassioned yet collected, he is dramatic yet subtle, he is ... I can go on and on. What is all the affair plot point about then? It doesn’t diminish the bond between the two main characters; to tell you quite truthfully the relationship the author wrote was bizarre yet still really touching. They used to hate eachother because Nan thought herself above him (after all the Warwick earldom was far more valuable than the Salisbury one- remember it was briefly a dukedom at one point), but then she sees what he made of himself and becomes proud of him and falls in love with him. However, he starts to get carried away with his ambitions, gets all-consumed by the legend of Warwick that he had cultivated and essentially becomes impersonal without wanting to (and realising). Nan feels she has lost him to the people of England (which are apparently all hypnotised by his presence, which ok is a fact grounded in history) and because of her wounded pride she starts seeking comfort in his brother (although, it makes little sense how this would work as I would gather he would also be away, especially at the Scottish boarders). When he refuses to support Warwick over Edward later on, she loses all feelings for Montagu and thinks him a coward, and when Warwick apologises for being amiss she realises that this whole time it was him she loved all along and is racked with guilt. I found this exploration of what it is like being wed to a man of such public standing quite interesting, the idea of losing him not to another woman or such but to his cause (which in this book is a mixture of belief in the french alliance, the common weal and subconsciously his own wounded pride brought on by an extreme adherence to inflexible chivalric values on his part and Edward IV’s actions), I confess, is not something I saw portrayed in this particular manner anywhere else. I mean it’s not like I’ve been searching for this particular motif, but this was a refreshing depiction of a medieval couple and it was a poignantly written relationship which the author had me invested in. The relationship was heartfelt because it was very distinct, Nan and Warwick weren’t just some stand-ins for a cash-grab but some consideration was paid to the real historical figures. The John plotline, sure I would in principle protest against something like this but it seems to have had two plot purposes: To illustrate the strain caused by the aforementioned issue and to kick off the whole Edward-Eleanor Butler-Montagu-Nan arc, which bizarre and unbelievable as it was, kept me on my toes. I’ll let it slide. Also, Edward IV was portrayed as quite a chilling villain in this, beholden of this weird mix of indifference, charm and wickedness.
Prose: This is what made me briefly wonder if this book was written by two different people. It failed to engage me in the first half, the descriptions were trite (except for the natural scenery bits), there was very little variety in sentence structures which gave it the stilted heaviness that thus afflicted The Sunne in Splendour (and most modern literature). There was a lot of redundancies eg the type of stuff like ‘whispered quietly’ or ‘yelled loudly’ and the author’s misunderstanding of certain period fashions drew me out eg references to bodices (not a thing then), calling the henin veil a silk scarf etc. She didn’t pull a Penman: exposit emotions to us, making me feel like I walked into a therapy session, but it was often heavy-handed. It first felt very much like an uninspired debut novel. A bit try-hard and I was wondering if this was the way of the bodice ripper... I wouldn’t know, I never read one before (though I’m unsure if this qualifies as it’s really not graphic and the focus is really not on sex nor is there much of it).
However, out of nowhere, the prose suddenly changed a little before half of the way in; colours, emotions, thoughts and the like started to blend masterfully. The sentence structures started varying to convey the way Nan was feeling. It became very show don’t tell, and it drew me in emotionally a bit (I must confess). Of course, that’s also around the point the plot had sort of started redeeming itself. Nan’s grief at her husband’s passing was particularly well conveyed - how she became a husk of her former self... I could read fifty pages of that. Her realisation that it had been him all along was also well written, and you could feel all the urgency and regret she felt at all the time she had wasted disregarding him as the plot grew nearer to Barnet. The mutual longing was also subtle yet strong, and it really was down to the effective use of sentence structure and waylaying of inspired thematic details. The mingling of past memories with present day in her later years was also very well done and with flow, and the adjectives etc used were no longer becoming distracting as before. My favourite part by far was the very last scene when she rides ahead of her escort to Middleham and she imagines a horse riding beside her caparisoned with the Neville standard; you can really feel how this is the first time that she had felt joy in years and she lets the ghost follow her.
... In Conclusion, this novel gave me very mixed feelings. I don’t know if I would have enjoyed it as much as I did had it not been for the fact that I entered it with a massive pre-formed love for the figures. It’s a bit like my experience with ‘Death Be Pardoner to Me’ (review #2 on this tag), was the book actually good or do I just have an affinity for the protagonist (Clarence in that case)? As such, I don’t think I would reccomend it. Indeed I wrote this spoilerish review because I was sure no one would fly off to Amazon after seeing this post. I can’t say if it’s above commercial historical romance in standard as this is the first time I’ve ever read a book from this genre. I think I’ll take a loongg break from historical fiction (after I finish with Jarman) because the Clarence portrayal was a bit of a nail in the coffin for me and I don’t want to continue upsetting myself for no reason. As I have now truly lost hope in reading a balanced depiction of him and if the literature isn’t absolutely expemplary why bother? Nevertheless, Warwick’s portrayal was a saving grace and made it impossible for me to give it two stars - it wasn’t perfect but still the best I’ve read (minus Last of the Barons Ofc). This is also a bit sad when you think about it, Warwick is also due some fictional justice. Even scholarly if you ask me.
The experience was educational as I learned a valuable lesson in what to avoid and include in my writing, what pitfalls/clichés not to fall into etc. I think I can draw another valuable lesson from this: Dear Histfic authors, if you happen to not be historians, heavily-researched in this time period, objective or literarily talented etc don’t take yourself seriously by publishing some tome of a work but just go nuts like this novel. At least this way you’re not sharing misinformation, inducing people into error and your work still gets to be engaging as opposed to a repetition of the previous amateur historical novelist. Yeah. For all the Sunne in Splendour’s superior quality, I must say I prefer this one better.
Tagging @pythionice who I have recently discovered has also read this book! Welcome fellow fan of Warwick <3

Shōnen Anime Through The Feminist Lens
Tumblr media
During quarantine, there has been a significant rise in the popularity of Anime; this wave of new fans brought back memories of when I first started exploring anime and how I came to love this media. Anime is a confusing word: In the western world, anime a separate genre of animated shows and movies from the typical western cartoons (ie. SpongeBob, Tom and Jerry, etc.) while in Japan, it refers to any animation in general. But for the sake of simplicity, I will refer to anime as a type of animated show or movie that uses signature aspects of Japanese-style animation.
Usually, a person is recommended mainstream shows from the shōnen genre when introduced to anime. Shōnen anime and manga are marketed towards boys between the ages of 12-18, but a lot of people outside of that demographic enjoy this genre as well. I find myself watching and recommending shōnen shows because of how exceptionally written the plot, the character development, and worldbuilding are. However, problems with female representation stem from the misconception that shōnen is only for boys or that girls don’t enjoy these types of stories. It is frustrating to see how little action and development female characters are given compared to their male counterparts and how often they are sexualized for the sake of comedic relief or fan service.
Tumblr media
NARUTO and NARUTO SHIPPUDEN
The Naruto series follows the journey of Naruto Uzumaki as he achieves his dreams to be acknowledged by the village he lives in and become the Hokage (the leader of the village). It’s a story about saving the world, protecting your loved ones, and believing in yourself.
Almost every person who has watched more than 3 years of anime has seen Naruto; those who haven’t still can recognize characters, references, and general plot points. Yes, it is THAT popular. I knew about the show but, I put off this anime for so long because of the silly reason that Naruto was an annoying brat at the beginning of the series. It took me a few months to build up my courage to pick up the series again— and wow! I was glad I did! I restarted my journey about two months ago and, as of today, I have less than 50 episodes left to watch to finish the series (keep in mind that the complete series has about 700 episodes). I got attached to the characters for their development and their compelling stories. I saw Naruto grow from being a troublemaker to a dependable hero, watched Sasuke go down a dark path for the sake of revenge, and learned about Kakashi and Itachi’s heartbreaking childhoods. But the girls? Where are the girls?
Tumblr media
As well written as the story is, girls in Naruto are viewed as support-type characters for the boys; their stories aren’t touched upon and remain the same throughout the series. The lack of development of the girls is best highlighted by Sakura— the main female character and the most hated person from the series, and dare I say, all of anime. At the beginning of the series, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura train together to become ninjas with their teacher, Kakashi. Sasuke was a prodigy and excelled in every task, Sakura was known for her intelligence and chakra control, and Naruto lacked skill yet impulsively charged headfirst towards his enemies. As the show went on, Naruto and Sasuke’s skills have grown on par as they continuously try to learn new powers to one-up the other. But Sakura stayed the same. Even though she gained super strength and trained to become a medical ninja under the Fifth Hokage, her abilities and progress are constantly shadowed by her teammates' flashy powers (look at the picture above). This gap is even more prominent after the time skip in Shippuden where she becomes a “damsel in distress” which annoyed a lot of fans. She had so much potential to become a great character. Even if she was not the strongest ninja, the show could have taken steps to make her valuable in some way even if all they did was make her an efficient support character to Naruto and Sasuke instead of making her seem like she is always in their way. The unbalance caused by the lack of active female roles in Naruto leaves the female audience unrepresented. The female characters' underdevelopment implied that the girls are incompetent and therefore don’t get to make an impact in the story.
Tumblr media
ONE PIECE
I can talk about this show for hours. With 950+ anime episodes and 1000+ manga chapters, One Piece is synonymous with art; it follows the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, on an adventure to find One Piece. Unlike other shōnen stories, One Piece immerses the audience into a mysterious world that is complex, dynamic, and feels real. Every single character is well developed— each of them have insanely detailed backstories, memorable personalities, and compelling motivations making them feel human. The story also tackles unconventional topics such as slavery, racism, the justice system, and classism. I could go on and on listing reasons as to why I love One Piece or why it is worth catching up to the 950 episodes, but I feel like you should let One Piece in and find that out for yourself.
Unlike Naruto, women take on significant roles in One Piece and are often admired as role models. However, the lack of body diversity and the over-sexualization of the female characters leave a rather unpleasant aftertaste.
Tumblr media
As seen above, they all suffer the same-body syndrome— large breasts, impossibly tiny waists, and skimpy clothing. I get that these are common types of fanservice but, there are plenty of questionable design choices whenever fanservice is prioritized over logic (ie. the top-left girl is supposed to be a gladiator but her outfit does the very opposite of protecting her as it leaves her vital areas exposed). Another issue I have is with Sanji and his behaviour around women. He is the prime example of what the internet would call a ‘simp’ where his perverse tendencies and chivalry clash whenever he is near a female character. I feel like his overprotectiveness toward women and his willingness to die for them is counterintuitive to the powerful portrayal of women in the story. I understand that fanservice isn't going anywhere but the girls’ unrealistic designs and their treatment dilute their complex characterization to mere pretty and delicate objects.
Tumblr media
CONCLUSION
From a feminist point of view, Naruto and One Piece have their own shortcomings when it comes to the inclusion and depiction of girls. I particularly chose to talk about them because they are the central faces of the shōnen genre, both of them depict common issues with female representation in most shōnen stories. It is understandable to a certain extent as to why the authors chose to draw/develop their characters, however, the lack of active female characters in shōnen stories fuels the ” shōnen is for boys, therefore, don’t expect female representation” narrative. It would do no harm to write stronger and more complex female characters in these stories, in fact, it would make the stories much more interesting as there is variation in perspectives and experiences— especially now because of the strong societal push toward feminism and the growing female audience consuming anime media. The fact that shounen does target boys is perhaps the most important reason to feature complex, active female characters in these stories—not only as supportive figures or dream girls, but as someone they can relate to and look up to as well.
EXTRA: NEW GENERATION SHŌNEN!
Naruto and One Piece have been in the anime scene for decades, but as societal values shift, many New Generation Shōnen are trying to tackle the inclusion of feminism in their stories. Here are some:
Tumblr media
Boku no Hero Academia, one of the primary faces of New Gen Shōnen: A superheroes story where superpowers or quirks rule the world.  Physical advantages male characters may have during fights is insignificant as the winner is decided by their ability to use their power at its full potential and their compatibility with the opponent’s quirk. Women are shown to have different body types, breaking the skinny hourglass stereotype with healthy and muscular bodies. Read more on how BNHA is breaking the moulds here: https://www.animefeminist.com/feature-hero-academia-confronts-shonen-sexism/
Tumblr media
Mob Psycho 100: A supernatural shōnen where the main character, Mob, struggles with masculinity, battles for self-improvement, and desires to just be an amiable and helpful person. His story breaks the typical toxic masculinity tropes in shonen stories and instead focuses on Mob’s emotional journey to being comfortable with who he is. Read more about this here: https://www.animefeminist.com/anime-feminists-top-25-anime-of-the-decade/
Tumblr media
Demon Slayer, another progressive main face of the New Gen Shōnen: A historical supernatural story where women are given major roles and are never looked down upon by their male counterparts. As demon slayers, their attire is unique to each individual yet fit for their job and is not compromised for the sake of fanservice.

Megastar shippers are mad again :o!! big shocker
TW ed // abu$e // Megastar clearly // a$sault  // $elf H@rm
So it’s been made clear to me I was ‘exposed’ on Twitter for hating Megastar here's the main thing. none of yall expose me, I'm open about hating this toxic abusive ship, I don’t hide it and I never once have. You don’t need to censor my name in fact, I prefer you don't. I never said or would ever to say to a victim, I have no regard or sympathy for what they went through especially not as one myself through multiple abusers. What I DONT have sympathy for is disregarding other victims for your arguably coping strategy. I would take away anyone's abuse if I could, but when you choose to ‘cope’ by promoting, fet!shizing, and romanticizing the awful terrible experience that is abuse, I will tell you to your face the damage you do to others.
I’ll start with the big argument, it’s a coping mechanism, but coping doesn’t mean good and it is VERY dangerous to think so. One of the many I coped with the abuse from my longest abuser was starving myself and not taking my medication. It made me feel strong, and feel like I was in total control, but that did not make it good. Especially being chronically ill, I was quite literally abusing MYSELF. When it comes to a much less physical way, I coped by making fun of others when I was around 13-15 especially ‘SJWs’ I made fun of kids that are autistic (knowing I was myself but not wanting to admit to that mentally) I made fun of people really who just weren’t like me, furries, band kids, scene kids. It was a lot of self-hatred and it did in a way heal me and do what I wanted it to do a coping strategy but it wasn’t okay, it wasn’t good, and importantly it was intensely unhealthy and worsed what I went through in the long run. Heres where Megastar shippers may be shocked I did megastar. Not long, but I did, around the age of 11-12. I idolized it, and I listened to the fandom really, I said it made me feel good and it made me happy hell I even said I wanted a ‘Megatron’ in my life. Boy did I get one. and because of the ship at that. I met a much older girl and we would DM on Insta, she sent things I shouldn’t have seen and audios I shouldn’t have heard. She said outright I was her ‘Starscream’ and that Megatron did ‘he had to’ to keep Starscream as his own and that he did what he did out of pure love and I ate it up. If being abused love I wanted to be abused, I just wanted to belong. But looking back the fandom's idea and admiration for megastar was very bad on my 11-year-old mind. KEEP IN MIND the show is not for adult audiences, I was a targeted consumer and I listened and learned from the adults, from the fandom, as any child does. So when I saw both the fet!ishzation of MLM and of abuse. I learned that to be normal. And from that, I learned that to be how I should COPE when I’m sad, I should be just like them because everyone says they are happy. I'm not the only, though other people's stories aren't my to tell, I can say they mention a$sault, physical abuse, mental, etc. I shouldn’t have to explain to mostly 15-25-year-olds, why that's not true and why just because you cope with something doesn’t make it healthy.
A second big ‘argument’ I see is, ‘fiction doesn’t affect reality’ ‘it’s fictional’ ‘its a cartoon’. I don’t understand this ‘debate’ because we have seen SO. MANY. TIMES. OF. FICTION. AFFECTING. (guess what) R E A L I T Y. Take, for example, finding Nemo and both the mass flushing of pet fish and also the mass abuse of Clownfish because every child wanted a ‘Nemo’. We see this again when we look into dinosaurs actually! In mainstream media the idea of dinosaurs being scaly, reptile-like, etc. that's not true and we’ve known it's not true! Dinos are ‘speculated’ to be feathered and colorful hence why they came to be BIRDS. But that idea, because we saw in movies, stuck. And most people who don’t research (and that's most people) only saw the fictional version, that version is what stands out in their minds, to them that is a dinosaur. After 101 Dalmatians so many, I mean SO MANY, kids wanted a Dalmatian. They are amazing dogs but the thing is they need a little more training, well parents didn’t want a real dog they wanted a movie dog, a cartoon dog, and so they got puppies. When those puppies grew and became ornery and no effort was put in place to train them, they were given away in mass. We KNOW fiction affects reality, we know human brains can’t process some fictional characters (especially in anime) as cartoons. We cry over fiction, we laugh over it, we learn from it, we put morals in it for kids, I don’t get why some people still argue it doesn’t happen and I’m not going to argue with ignorance.
Essentially here's the points. You CAN cope with Megastar, but you shouldn’t, it provides no actual help it can actually soften you to abusers, it warps the idea of abuse, it romanticizes it, (a big part of it is YOAI which is fet!shizaton of MLM) and it NORMALIZES it by being commonly consumed and a large part of the Transformers, and TFP’s specifically, fandom. Fiction DOES affect reality what you do online, say online, show online, especially to minors, is heavily altering to a mindset and to people in correlation with what's being shown. You can hate me all you want, censor my name all you want, but no one is arguing besides ‘I like it and I said so’ you can say so, I can’t silence you and I wouldn’t, but when you neglect and turn down what is blatant problems and obvious issues in front of you? That is no problem of mine :)
You ship abuse and if you are gonna keep doing it, at least own up <3
(also you guys can ship abuse without it affecting reality but I can’t make a joke hrm hmm)
edit: for context for the last part I made a joke about STARSCREAM killing megastar shippers. I said killing yes but how is that death wish did yall really think i was like. bout to summon the guy I’m confused by you guys make it make sense.
Edit 2: in the future i WILL clarify jokes better ill put that slash thing i think its /j. To me and my friends it was and still is obvious but i understand the concern. Ive gotten multiple ACTUAL threats of being doxed, assulted, etc. so clarifying wasnt a need in my head and ill be better at doing so next time i totally get how to some people specially those with truama it could have been seen as scary and im sorry i didnt clarfiy as i should!

Part 1  Part 2  Part 3 Part 4  Part 5 part 7
Finally you were moving from the mountain, Itachi had appeared in your room just when it began to get dark and ordered you to follow him, you didn´t know where and to top it off he had not allowed you to see where you were going down from the mountain to the forest.
The trees covered the little sunlight that was left and you were not used to moving through that space so you clung to Itachi's robe, who advanced in front of you without signs of the slightest effort.
"This is pathetic," you thought as you watched your clenched fists around the cloth the man was wearing, but that was the situation you were in and you couldn't escape, there was no way for an escape in that forest, without chakra and having Itachi as an opponent it wouldn´t turn out well, also you didn´t know where Kisame was, he could be anywhere prepared in case you tried to escape. It was still a dead end situation until you came up with something that could help them find you, the clothes you were wearing were new, so it still didn't smell like you. It was clear that Itachi had thought that you could try to leave a trail, so he had made you change to a new and clean haori before leaving the mountain, but very carefully and without releasing one of your hands from him, you pulled several hairs on your head, dropping them to the ground, if they were looking for you, any trace you could leave no matter how small it would do.
Going a little further you let go of Itachi and taking advantage of a rock that he had just dodged, you stumbled scraping your leg and leaving blood on the surface.
Itachi noticing that your grip had disappeared, turned just at the exact moment when you fell forward, making you collide with his chest -Be careful- he said and took you by the shoulders, separating from you and taking your hand.
During the whole way he kept the sharingan active, you might think that it was because he wanted to stay alert but the use that Itachi gave him was not habitual and that was something that kept you thoughtful, after what happened the previous day you had an idea of the reason why he used it so much, but you needed to check it.
-We have arrived- He said, taking you out of your thoughts, you looked up and found more forest and some hot springs.
-What are we supposed to do here?
-Bathing -he replied simply and threw you a cloth bag, you opened it and inside there was a towel and clothes, you were confused. Uchiha Itachi had just taken you to a hot spring? You looked at him not knowing where to start to ask.
-Is it some kind of  test?
-No, I thought you would like to take a bath.
You nodded looking at the clothes in your hands and then at him, you didn´t understand Itachi´s intentions, who seemed to notice your doubts and smiled, with the same smile that you had seen the first day-It´s my apology for what happened yesterday.
"You don't have to apologize" was going to automatically come out of your mouth but you bit your tongue and nodded again-Okay, it's the least you can do after attacking me.
-It wasn´t my intention- He replied calmly, without a slight smile leaving his lips. -You surprised me- He finally admitted, and climbed into one of the trees closest to the waters.
-Aren't you going to take a bath?- Itachi denied and settled on the branch.
-I'll stay here, don't worry, I'm not going to look.
"Okay," you murmured and away from him, you undressed and entered the water, the hot water felt so good that for a moment you closed your eyes, relaxed, forgetting where you were and who you were with.
When you opened your eyes again, you looked at the branch where the man was sitting, from there he could see you perfectly, but he was not looking at you, he had lost sight in front and his eyes were normal, that did not make sense, you swam towards the shore and you leaned on it, drawing the attention of the man in the tree.
-Itachi-you called him and when he heard your voice and looked at you his eyes turned red again.
-Are you okay?, your face is red.
-It's the steam -you answered somewhat embarrassed to find yourself in that situation with him, it was so strange that you didn't know how to feel about it -I've been thinking -you said trying to find the most appropriate way to say what you were going to say -Are you losing your sight? -You asked finally and it seemed that you had been right, because surprised, Itachi looked away while the Sharingan disappeared from his eyes.
-Why did you notice?
-You use the Sharingan too much, I know it spends energy and chakra and you are not the type to do unnecessary things and when i saw you the other day ... you didn´t use it and you seemed not to see what was around you.
The man closed his eyes and sighed, resting his head on the trunk of the tree, he seemed so human, so innocent and gentle, if you didn´t know what he had done you would think that it was impossible for that man to be a ruthless murderer, you wanted to be afraid of him, you wanted to be cautious, but every time he was near you,  you forgot about it.
Your gaze on him seemed to bother him as he tried to distract himself by playing with a kunai in his hands, was he really a murderer?  you wondered without looking away, even Sasuke was more intimidating than him. You really wanted to find its limit, where its murderous and ruthless side began, because so far you had not found it.
You enjoyed the hot waters in silence for several more minutes and when you decided that it was enough, you went out, making sure that Itachi was distracted and didn´t look at you, you dressed in the clothes in the bag, it was a shirt and shorts, both white , like the Haori. When you finished you went up to the tree where Itachi was sitting and observed the waters in which you had just bathed, the fireflies began to occupy all the space around you, giving the place a magical appearance.
-I never thanked you-you said without looking at the man next to you.
-It´s not necessary, it was the right thing to do- he said, dismissing it, but from his quick response it seemed that he remembered it exactly the same way as you.
-You skipped the mission and it took us two more days, I never had the opportunity to thank you.
-After that I left -he said looking the other way, of course he was gone, after assassinating his clan and you were wondering why he had done it, despite everything you knew or thought you knew about him, nothing corresponded with what you were seeing of him and what little you remembered of the man.
-You look like you´re 10 years old- said the man satisfied, the makeup you were wearing made you look more childish, like the pink kimono that they had put on you, in your hand, a lollipop and various children's jewelry adorning your hair-perfect.
You looked at the boy dressed in black who was standing next to you, Uchiha Itachi, he didn´t look at you, he only looked at the man in front of both, listening to the orders he gave you- Okimura Shiro is your target, he likes kids, he will receive the location of the weapons tonight, your mission you know what it is, as soon as you get it you must send it to Itachi, he has his own orders, understood?
-Yes sir-You both answered and your paths separated.
The house they took you to was more luxurious than you expected, there was a woman and several girls, all of them arranged to attract the male audience that walked the streets during the afternoon and night, you couldn't help but hear the murmurs of some of the girls seeing you go by "Poor thing" "She is so young" "That means Mr. Okimura is back, I'm glad i´m not her" with only 13 years old, you were already part of ANBU and you had killed people, but you couldn't avoid getting nervous with all those murmurs, they had promised you that the message you had to intercept would arrive before that filthy man could approach you and you hoped that it was so, you prayed for it, but your prayers didn't seem to have been heard.
-Oh, how old are you? -You heard the voice of a man when the door of the room you just entered closed, to your surprise Okimura Shiro was not at all as you expected, he was not even such an older man, perhaps he was only between 30 or 35 years old.
-10 sir-you lay quietly without leaving the door
-Come here, don´t be afraid, do you want to eat something?- He said as he extended his hand towards you, you approached slowly and carefully, you felt a strange cold running through your legs and stomach. Was it fear?
When you were close to the man, his hand fell on you and it didn´t leave your back at any time, you felt disgusting heat right where his hand landed, you felt that it burned you, you wanted to jump away from him.
-You know why you're here? -You refused and looked at the food, the man smiled and stroked your hair, you wanted to vomit.
"Didn't your parents tell you anything?"
-My mom just told me I could come to dinner here
-Oh, that makes it more interesting- her smile widened and he didn't stop touching your hair, after that you would cut it -And your dad?
-I don't have ...- The man's hands rested on your waist and he sat you on top of him, surprised you looked at him without knowing what to do, but he just left you sitting there on his lap and continued stroking your hair, while he gave you to eat.
-Then today we can pretend that I am your dad, I will take care of you, what do you think? -You agreed disgusted, wanting the message to come already, but when you thought about it you realized something, your mission was to intercept the message, but if you were going to do it you couldn't leave the room without fighting with the man, so why bother getting into that room, dressed like that to play that role with that man? Were you just a distraction? yes, it must be that.
A cold sweat seized you, when you felt how that guy's hands lowered the fabric that covered your shoulders to one side -Why don't we make you comfortable my little doll?
-No ... no, I'm fine-you said walking away and returning the cloth to its place, but the man didn´t give up, he grabbed your arm and drew you to him, you tried to let go, but his hands were digging into you-RELEASE ME -you shouted trying to avoid being undressed, you kicked and ran to the door, but he grabbed your hair and threw you to the ground, if you used any technique, you would reveal what was happening and the mission would be completely ruined, but if you were quick and killed him, nothing would happen.
Before you could act, the window was smashed to pieces, giving way to your mission partner, who in less than a minute killed the individual and dragged you out of the house, before anyone realized what had happened.
You didn´t speak, you were forced to find the weapons on your own, disrupting the entire original plan and endangering the mission, earning the anger of your superiors, you didn´t speak because you had no words to describe what you felt, triaition, you had been used and betrayed, if you had not noticed, if Itachi had not skipped the original mission plan ... what would have happened? But you could never thank him, the day after returning to Konoha the Uchicha clan massacre happened and you never understood it.
-I know what you're thinking -he said looking at you , his face seemed relaxed and his hand rested on your head affectionately -don't waste time thinking about my motives, i did it and that's all you need to know.
-I'm not the only one thinking about your motives.
-Are you talking about Sasuke?-At the mention of his brother's name, his gaze drifted away from yours again.
-You want him to kill you ... that's why you let him live, it's cruel to him, you know? but I guess I'm not in a position to give advice, this is a kidnapping after all and you are my kidnapper.
The man denied and stroked your hair with the hand that still remained on your head. "You have too much faith in me," he commented almost in a whisper and he jumped down from the tree, staying turned between the lowest flying fireflies, with his hair. long, his black clothes and red eyes, it was a beautiful vision, you did not know if he had come from paradise or hell.

Rise of the Guardians: Is it as good as we remember?
(Oof! I’ve been working on this one for a long while! Buckle up buttercup, this is gonna be a long one!)
(Before I get into this, I want everyone to know that I’m not claiming anything to be fact. This is just my personal opinion).
Back in November of 2012, we were greeted with Rise of the Guardians. This movie, based on the books entitled The Guardians of Childhood, written by William Joyce, gave us a new and unique take on our favorite childhood characters. This included Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost, and more.
Tumblr media
While it didn’t do so well at the box office, it seemed to explode in popularity. It spawned a fandom fairly quickly, even spawning a couple fandoms that branched off of it. For a long while there it seemed that, wherever you looked, you saw cosplays, fanart, tribute videos, fanfiction, etc. Loads of people seemed to absolutely love this movie, and I, as a twelve-year-old at the time and thus a part of the target audience, was no exception.
Even now eight years later, I still claim to love this movie. Even though I haven’t seen it in a long while, it left a huge impact on me as a writer and artist, which is why I am sad to see the fanbase slowly dwindling away. So I went back and watched it again, and as I sat there ready to press the ‘play’ button, I began to wonder.
Will this movie be as good as I remember it?
And the answer? Yes and no.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I still really like this movie, and I still stand by it being one of my favorites. But just like everything else in life, nothing is perfect. And while still amazing, this movie does indeed have some flaws.
And as I like to save the best for last, I’ll start off by diving into some of the movies flaws.
Flaw #1 - Pacing
Tumblr media
The pacing in this movie can be a little awkward from time to time. Nothing super jarring, but enough to make me go, “I’m sorry, what?”.
Some scenes seemed to just jump from one to the other without much warning. Either that, or the transition from one scene to the next seemed a little off. One example of this is when North, Bunny, Sandman, and Jack Frost set off to the Tooth Palace. There was nothing inherently wrong with these scenes, but the transition between the two seemed a little awkward. One minute we were having a nice, calm moment between North and Jack, and then all of a sudden we get a quick, action-like sequence with the sleigh.
Another moment that felt awkwardly paced was the introduction of the movies villain, Pitch Black. It seemed like there should’ve been more buildup to him. We got a bit, but moments of buildup seemed quite few and far between. When he was introduced it felt almost a little random, him just appearing for a few moments and disappearing just as quick didn’t seem to work or do him justice.
There are other scenes, but I won’t go over those now, as I guess I’m probably already bugging some hardcore RotG fans.
Flaw #2 - Unexplored Questions and Backstories
Alright, before I get people shouting me down about how, “If I want backstory and questions answered I should read the books”, hear me out.
When you make a story, whether it be in the form of a movie or book, you’re going to want it to make sense. You’re going to want everything to tie together. It’s true that the original books do this, but it’s not seen in the movie. So for those who watch the movie, they may walk out confused about some aspects of it. The two parts I’m going to focus on here are Pitch Black’s backstory, and how Sandman came back to life.
Tumblr media
Every story needs a good villain, and Pitch Black is certainly a well-defined villain. But here’s the problem. We get no backstory or explanation as to how he came to be. We do get a quick flashback to Pitch during the ‘Dark Ages’, which gives us his motivation as to why he’s doing what he’s doing. But that’s it. We get no other real backstory to how he came to be. Actually, we don’t get that for any of the other Guardians besides Jack Frost. But again, the other Guardians lack of backstory could be forgiven, as none of them are the main characters. But it’s important to tell a villains backstory because it gives the audience something to connect with.
Onto the next question. How exactly did Sandman come back to life?
Tumblr media
This is a question that’s actually been on my mind for a while now. How exactly did Sandy come back? In the movie we clearly see him die, so how did he come back from the dead? The only lead I got is that maybe the kids somehow brought him back. During the final confrontation with Pitch, Jamie touches some of the black nightmare sand and it turns gold. It’s later on after that that he looks to the other kids and says, “I know what we have to do,” and they run offscreen for a little while, only for Sandy to show up soon after. Did Sandy come back through the kids believing in him again? Did they preform some sort of ritual to call him back from the dead? Who knows. It’s a dumb nitpick, I know, but I still wonder.
Well, now that I got that out of the way, and the RotG fandom is probably coming after my head, I’ll go over the strengths of this movie. And trust me, these really help the movie stand out.
Strength #1 - The Characters
Tumblr media
All the characters in this movie are phenomenal! But to be honest, Jack Frost was the reason I originally wanted to watch this film when it first came out. Growing up I never really heard any stories about Jack Frost, and the only Jack Frost I ever saw in the media was of a withered old man. So seeing him portrayed as a teenager seemed pretty interesting. And the character was handled and written very well. His backstory was intriguing, he had a fun and enjoyable personality, but that’s not all.
One thing that was really great about Jack Frost’s character was his struggle throughout the story, and it’s actually a pretty relatable struggle as well. In the story, Jack Frost starts out not knowing who he really is or why he’s even alive. Not only that, but it seems that no mortals can see him, effectively making him invisible to the entire world. The story follows him as he looks for answers to his identity.
This can be a very relatable situation, especially for preteens and early teenagers who are still trying to figure themselves out. And most all of us get to this point. We reach a time in our lives, often in our youth, where we start to wonder exactly who/what kind of person we are. Along with the desire to discover ourselves, there is also the fear/feeling of being invisible and isolated, not understanding where we exactly fit in. Again, everyone reaches a place like that as well, where we feel invisible to the world. Just a passerby. Like we have something amazing to share, if only we could get someone to see it.
The other characters don’t come off as deep or complex as Jack, but that doesn’t make them any less enjoyable. Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and Sandman were all very creatively designed and portrayed. A lot of the fun from this movie actually came from all these strong, drastically different personalities clashing with and bouncing off of one another. It made for some fun dialogue and hilarious moments which had me laughing off and on throughout the beginning of the film.
Strength #2 - The Villain
Tumblr media
Pitch Black is, without a doubt, one of my favorite DreamWorks villains. I loved everything about this character. From the voice, the design, the aesthetic, it’s all wonderful! But the one thing that set this villain up above many others was that he straight up killed an important character onscreen.
Reminder, I was twelve when this movie came out, and up until then, I wasn’t often exposed to death scenes like this in animated films. I grew up majorly on Disney animated movies and shows, and when a character died, it was usually offscreen. And on the occasion it was onscreen? The villain only indirectly killed a character. For example, in the Lion King, Scar pushed Mufasa into a gorge where a stampede was taking place. Scar killed him indirectly, as he’s the one who put him there, but the stampede is what really did the work.
But in this case it was much different. It’s not like Pitch took Sandy off to the side and killed him there. No, we legit saw this whole scene happen and play out on screen. When I first saw it, it blew my mind! This was actually kind of new for me! We saw Pitch take that shot at Sandy, and we actually saw Sandy’s final moments as he died. When you have a villain physically kill off a beloved character on screen, it sends a message. It sends the message that this villain isn’t all talk. That this villain really does have great power of their own, and that they are serious about getting what they want. That they aren’t going to let anyone get in their way. They mean business. And that was perfectly executed in this scene. (No pun intended).
Strength #3 - The Creativity and Art
Tumblr media
I think it goes without saying that this movie is unbelievably creative! Everything from the locations, animation, and the characters themselves in both personality and design are just bursting with creative energy! The animation is incredibly detailed, and for DreamWorks as an animation studio, I think this has to be some of their best work. The colors, textures, details, and everything in between are just so beautifully done. In terms of creativity, two of the locations I want to talk about are the Tooth Palace and Pitch Black’s lair.
When it comes to the Tooth Palace, the artists and creators were given a lot of creative freedom. In media there is no set idea of a place where the Tooth Fairy lives or operates. We all know Santa lives in a workshop, and it makes sense to think that the Easter Bunny lives in a Warren, but no one really knows what to expect when it comes to the Tooth Fairy. When we saw the Tooth Palace, we were treated to some highly detailed and stunning imagery, all with a lovely color scheme of soft pinks, purples, and blues with accents of gold. Not to mention the design of the structural design was a spectacle itself to behold.
Tumblr media
And then we have Pitch Black’s lair. As a lowkey goth at twelve years old in the early 2010s, the aesthetic here made it one of my favorite parts of the movie. This set here is similar to the Tooth Palace in that, the creators had a greater level of creative freedom, as we never really think about where exactly the Boogeyman lives. I mean, we know he kinda lives under beds, but that doesn’t sound as cool as living in a spooky, gothic underground secret lair. (But in all honesty, I do really enjoy the detail of the entrance of his lair being under an old, broken down bedframe. It’s a very good nod to the old stories).
It’s like a maze. A labyrinth full of shadows, and looks like the interior of an old, gothic castle that’s somewhat tilting into an abyss. It’s color scheme is predominantly full of grays and blacks, and the surprisingly elegant-looking cages hanging from an invisible ceiling really helps to establish a more gothic look. And since the lair is very dark and shadowed, it fits and aids Pitch black perfectly, in that he can morph in and out of shadows as he pleases. This gives him plenty of places to hide as he’s making an effort to mess with and get into Jack’s head.
Tumblr media
The last piece of creativity I want to touch on is how the characters are presented. And holy crap after this movie this is the only way I can view Santa, Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, etc.!
They take these beloved characters that we are already familiar with, and, while still somewhat showing them as we know them, present them in an entirely different way.
Tumblr media
We all see Santa Claus as this huge, lovable man with a big belly who’s always jolly. And while that is what we get from this Santa, or North, as they call him, it’s very much flipped on its head. While still jolly, North is very eccentric, high-energy, and is strong-armed, duel broadsword wielding Russian warrior with tattoos. Seriously, who thinks of a Russian warrior when they think of Santa?! Well, now I do! Also the fact that he’s not always super happy like other incarnations of the character. We get to see that he’s very capable of getting both upset and frustrated. It’s a pretty interesting way to humanize such a beloved character.
Tumblr media
We then have the Easter Bunny, who is played by Hugh Jackman. Say that out loud. The Easter Bunny is being played by Hugh Jackman. Growing up, me and many other kids saw the Easter Bunny as a small, cute little critter who hopped around the world leaving baskets and painting eggs. Not a tall, boomerang wielding fighter from the Australian outback. Not only that, but giving him a small rivalry with North was interesting, and snot something I ever really thought about. As well as the idea of a the Easter Bunny having somewhat of a temper.
Tumblr media
In terms of character design, I feel like both the Tooth Fairy and Sandman had the most creative freedom. We don’t see these two characters often portrayed in media, so they were able to receive some really cool and unique-looking designs. Especially the Tooth Fairy. Did you ever think of the Tooth Fairy looking a like an elegant cross between a beautiful woman and a hummingbird? No, of course you didn’t. But Rise of the Guardians gave us just that, and it truly set its place for it’s own individual take on this childhood legend.
Tumblr media
Pitch Black is a fairy creative villain as well. When you hear about the Boogeyman, you don’t get very scared. The name actually sounds a little silly when you say it out loud. And even then, because of the success of The Nightmare Before Christmas, you usually think of their incarnation of the character when you hear that name. But this version of the character is actually much different. He’s not this weird, in-your-face kind of monster. He’s a very subtle, yet terrifying character. When I first saw the movie in theaters, there were kids in the room crying at moments when Pitch Black came on screen. It’s also interesting the way his powers work. We all grew up knowing the Boogeyman as someone who just hid under beds. We had no idea what magical powers he may or may not have had. So giving him the ability to morph into the darkness and into shadows was a pretty cool concept, but also solidified that he had a weakness. Light.
So, In Conclusion...
Tumblr media
As I have gotten older, I admit that this movie does look a little different to me now, versus when I saw it as a preteen. I’ve noticed some interesting flaws here and there, but I’ve also been able to remember why I fell in love with it in the first place. It’s a very different kind of movie, but that’s part of what makes it so much fun and interesting.
The characters are delightful, the villain is intimidating, the story, while awkwardly paced, is still pretty solid, and is all tied together with a great lead character. And as you get invested in the story, you’ll find yourself getting really into the all artistry that went into creating this movie.
At the end of the day, it makes me sad to see the fanbase for this movie slowly dwindling away. But I feel there are always going to be people out there who enjoy this movie. And you know what? You never know what the future holds. Perhaps there will be a movie in the distant future. Or more likely a animated series on either TV or Netflix. And for the hardcore fans, go and read the original books.
All I can say here is that, every now and again when it starts to get a little nippy outside, I’ll sit in my living room with hot chocolate and give this movie another watch.
