anyway episodes that sam's psychic powers should have come back during. imagine him arguing with this 'i'm a real psychic' guy and then yanking his gun out his hand with his own powers. fully on accident but it happens.

now see there's some drama for him and dean! that would work! sam tried to hide his hallucinations but couldnt. but theoretically he could hide this. and he should! because his brother literally just went and killed a woman for being a little too on the monster side for his liking. for being so evil that she couldn't possibly change. and so if sam's powers came back now? sam's powers? that he has because he has demon blood? he would be so fucking sick with stress trying to hide that from dean.

because. you know. if dean's already jumping for a reason to 'deal with' sam because he's hallucinating, a thing he can't even control. then what else is sam supposed to assume will happen once dean knows about this?

In the original draft of this chapter, Wolf stays a, uh, wolf until like the 4th update. Instead of actually managing to get his teeth on the master sword, Loft threw him off immediately. The Deku Tree still said the line about all three of them being heroes and Slate is like. “Including the fucking dog????!” I thought it was very funny but a) it made some scenes later down the line a huge pain and b) I was tired of drawing wolves ALDKDKD

You may have noticed Wolf’s scowling in the bg of almost every panel. That’s kind of just his face, but also right now my guy is nursing the world’s biggest migraine from popping the shadow crystal out of his skull. He can stay wolfmode for a while, but it’s still technically a curse. It’s not consequence free, and there’s an upper limit for how long he can spend in that form. Anyway, cut him some slack if he’s a little prickly for a bit.

There were a lot of comments about Loft being strong enough to toss a wolf over his head lol. My hc is that he’s one of, if not the strongest Link sans any magic items like power bracelets or gauntlets. He’s actually not even as strong now as he was during his quest. Wolf maybe has him beat now, but he can still get tossed lolol

It might seem like Slate’s really taken everything that happened at the end of ch1 in stride, but don’t worry. He’s simmering. Loft is grateful for the opportunity to get distracted by something else. Maybe that’s why he was so willing to approach the wild animal he’s never seen before lol

This maybe goes without saying based on the events of the last two updates, but Slate never had wolf link with him during the events of botw. He doesn’t recognize Wolf.

I’m really glad ppl seem to be liking the colors bc I struggled with them so hard on both updates 🫠literally days of me turning to my roommate and going “I think I’ve never made anything worse” and them going “it looks good stop being dramatic” WKDJDK I have this thing where if I had an idea in my head for what an update should look like, and what I produce doesn’t meet it somehow, I start seeing in fucking. shrimp colors. Posting always gives me a confidence boost back lol.

these pages were cursed in general bc like. this doesn’t usually happen but I think I redrew every panel in this update at least 5 times each. that’s part of why it ended up being late SKDJF

I REALLY like the idea of being in the presence of the Triforce and having access to its power being this eldritch, divinely horrifying experience. The sort of thing that is impossible to explain to anyone and also haunts you forever. Loft spends a lot of time actively trying not to think about the Triforce. Just, like, remember that about him.

Like how tears in reality are shown through holes in the literal comic panels, I tried to show the concept of reality bending in the form of a panel stretching and twisting like a ribbon ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ I hope that came across. Triforce lore varies a bit from game to game, but I’ve come up with my own internal logic for bonus links that combines all the ideas I like lolol. We’ll learn more about it in due time!

I also really like this parallel :D I intentionally set up the panels so past and present loft would line up like this. i love getting to draw flashback links it’s so fun to think of ways to convey what they used to be like, and how their quests might have gone for them. Past Loft’s not having a great time by the time he reaches this point lol

Can I ask who's side you were on from the Ember bonus chapter? Or are you kind of neutral on it?

Oof this is so complex, anon. This is going to be so long. And I doubt that this conversation will be settled any time soon.

I wouldn't say that I am neutral because I have Thoughts and Feelings, but I think Rhys and Nesta both had good points and did dumb things. I know this post leans in Nesta's favor, but it's not anti anyone. It's more my thoughts about how complex the situation was, and why I think people did the things they did, what was motivating them. Let me explain:

Should Nesta have consulted someone about giving the mask to Bryce, even just to borrow it? Yeah, I think she should have. I knew that she had done that prior to having read the bonus chapter, and in the back of my head I thought it was so... weird for her to have given this important object of power to Bryce without asking for anyone else's opinion? I felt like I was missing some context, like why does Nesta just hold onto these objects all the time and do with them what she wills? Guess my unease was right, because other characters do NOT like how she handles the trove.

The stakes from Nesta being wrong about this were insanely, astronomically high. And "astronomical" isn't even a metaphor in this case, it's literal. She wasn't wrong, but that is a huge, gigantic, ridiculous risk to have taken. Everyone in acotar knows that the Daglan/Asteri are the beings who oppressed them thousands of years ago, and now they have proof in Bryce's arrival that the Daglan are still up to their old tricks. For the Daglan to then have these objects of immense power, potentially?? OOF. And Nesta is newer to the fae world, she may not fully grasp the gravity of the situation, so she probably wasn't working with complete understanding of the implications.

I mentioned that the group chat has been ACTIVE on this topic, and @areyoudreaminof (I think it was Kelsey, if not correct me) said that perhaps Nesta was thinking that by doing this, she could help humans in some way. Maybe not the humans she grew up with, but somewhere, Nesta thought, maybe she could do something good for other people who are effectively powerless. So I understand why Nesta did it. This was also after she had spent a bunch of time with Bryce, they learned about each other's worlds, and I think they had attained a sort of understanding.

Also side note, but people didn't trust Nesta with Made objects in acosf either and that was condescending as fuck - maybe she didn't want to be just as shitty to Bryce as everyone had been towards her. I get why people don't trust them with these objects, but in a way it comes down to underestimating them and not understanding their intentions.

Was Rhys right to have lost his mind about the mask going to another world? Absolutely. The Night Court is his responsibility, which means that everything that happens there ultimately falls to him. His fears about the Daglan invading again have been real since he saw Aelin falling through the sky. He's been thinking about these very real threats for a while. Merrill is researching other worlds and although this hasn't been confirmed, I feel like she was brought there for that reason? To give him answers? Whether or not that's true, Rhys is the High Lord and the fact that some of the most powerful objects in their possession were off galavanting in another world without his knowledge, in a way that could literally lead to the destruction of their world - Rhys being understanding and nice about it in this situation would be totally unrealistic.

Rhys has also Been Through It in terms of war, court politics, fae bullshit. He has a much better grasp of what the consequences could be if Made objects get into the wrong hands. His fears aren't hypothetical, they are very real.

HOWEVER - was Rhys right to have treated Nesta the way that he did? Absolutely fucking not. I am honestly so sick of him being a dick to Nesta just because of shit she's done to other people. Not to him. It was so hard to read descriptions of Nesta's body language when they came back into the scene, after their fight. "Nesta's shoulders tensing, her head bowing". For Nesta to have been so thoroughly chastised by someone who already has a history of treating her like shit, it made me so mad. For Nesta, who has gone through so much growth and made so many strides to not hate herself, to regain confidence and better awareness of herself, to have been made to feel small - it makes me so, so mad honestly.

The thing is, we don't actually know the content of their argument, what Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel said to Nesta. All we have gotten thus far is the aftermath. Maybe Rhys tried to be tactful and then Nesta pushed his buttons, as she's done in the past. All we know is how Nesta acts afterwards, which doesn't make me feel charitable in terms of how Rhys handled it.

I think - and again I'll need to read more of the context of this fight which I assume we will see in acotar5 - but I think that one of the main reasons Rhys was pissed off and reacted the way he did was because of his ego (and fear, even if it's justifiable). He's so used to calling all the shots, to having everything under control, that I think he's not used to anyone else having power on the same level as him. Power in this sense refers to authority, the ability for other people to make these kinds of decisions without consulting him. He's used to being the Big Man in Charge and Nesta is clearly a threat to that. This is all my headcanon/assumptions about how he's feeling, but... I'd be surprised if I'm off the mark, based on his past behaviors and the way he makes executive decisions without consulting the IC, who ostensibly exist in order to support him.

Basically, I think that Nesta was on shaky ground in letting Bryce borrow the mask even though it did turn out okay in the end, but Rhys was wrong for acting out the way that he did.

This is only somewhat related to your actual question, but I think that this is one of the scenes that we will see in acotar5, made possible by having Azriel's POV, him as the main character.

More on the Vatores' complicated relationship with Vlad to come, but for now I will say that settling in Forgotten Hollow despite hating his guts was absolutely a (petty) power move on Lilith's part. Vlad doesn't have any qualms about killing humans. In fact, he has little interest in the affairs of humans at all. But what he doesn't care for is Lilith's ostentatious style. He's very old-fashioned and set in his ways regarding how a "proper" vampire should behave and doesn't like when they draw too much attention to themselves because he believes it puts vampires as a collective at risk. He once hoped to mold Lilith in his image, but that obviously didn't work out, and he now finds her indiscreet, disrespectful, and lacking manners, and he finds Caleb a wimpy annoyance who should have never been turned.

I also wanted to explain a bit more about vampire telepathy in my universe. There's a psychic link between sire vampires and their children that allows them to communicate internally (as we've seen Lilith and Vlad do before - and we'll explore the circumstances of her turning in the future!) and also to probe each other's thoughts/memories (which, for example, is what allows Caleb to track down Helena). Physical distance weakens the link, and stronger vampires can establish barricades against intrusion (like Caleb is trying to do now with Lilith). It's also not a constant thing. It's an active choice to enter another's mind. Caleb is considerate (yes, even with his sister), so he does it sparingly and accesses only the information he needs. Lilith and Vlad couldn't care less, so they'll shamelessly dig for secrets. Most vampires are also able to wield telepathic powers over humans, although obviously this takes skill and practice. Humans' minds are more vulnerable and as such more susceptible to hypnosis. This allows vampires to control humans for feeding and other purposes and also to erase or alter their memories. I don't think any of this greatly deviates from what you would expect, and I've tried to imply most of it through the storytelling, but I just wanted to explain it all in one place.

Caleb: [stiffly] Straud.

Vlad: It seems you’re out and about these days more than your sister is. How is Lilith anyway? I can’t imagine she's finally come to her senses and decided to practice moderation for once in her life.

Caleb: Why don’t you rummage around in her thoughts and find out for yourself? She picked up that habit from you, after all.

Vlad: She’s learned how to keep up her guard against me. [pointed look] As I’m sure you’ve learned your own tricks against her. No matter. There are things in that girl's head beyond description. I’d rather not get mired in her depravity. Surely you know what I mean.

Caleb: I never acquired a taste for extracting people’s secrets without their permission.

Vlad: Of course not. You’re a peculiar creature, aren’t you? I warned her you wouldn’t be suited to this life. Well, in this case, you’re likely better off. Maintaining blissful ignorance is undoubtedly more pleasant than holding the eternal knowledge of all she’s done.

Caleb: [impatiently] Is there something else you wanted to discuss?

Vlad: That man - what is it, Benali? - and his charming little book… It’s not going to cause trouble, is it?

Caleb: I haven’t seen any angry hordes yet. This is your town, old man. There’ll be no trouble so long as you don’t let it in.

Deity of the moon and oceans. Do not be fooled by her elegant and beautiful appearance, for she's an energic goddess that will bend bodies of water to her emotional will.

The moon is often associated to calmness, feminity, such things, but I decided to go with an other approach. The moon is small and fast. She turns around the earth every day of the year, and is responsible for the tides. The closer she is, the bigger the tide ! That doesn't sound that much calm to me. In this AU Julie appears calm only because Sally insist that she has to dress "regal" for their very important deity jobs. Isn't that silly ?

Julie will have alternate outfits depending on the activity she wants to do at any given moment, switching from pants to dress !

Sally Starlet

Deity of the Sun, stars and fire, she is the calm one, most of the time. Warm, but also a little stuck up sometimes, Sally likes when things are in order and go her way. She sees their deity roles as important ! The fiery goddess also gives her blessings in the arts, especially theater art which she favors

The sun doesn't move as much as the moon, but it is big and powerful and at the center of our solar system. I like the idea of reversing roles a little, having the sun being the calm one for once

Home

The deity of death is a kind and compassionate fellow. He doesn't talk much, but listens very well, and will help souls pass to their afterlife with all the compassion in the world. He is also the patron of living spaces, as he wants to make sure beings live well, safe, sound and happy, before he comes to take them away.

I like it when death deities aren't cruel but instead very kind and comforting. Home will have a lot of little helpers ! Although, note that Home is the deity of death as in he's the reaper. There is other deities ruling over the concept of death ! Home is more of a psychopomp in this AU ( psychopomps are the "reaper" deities. It includes Valkyries, Ankous, Shinigamis, Grim Reaper, etc)

The deity of life ! He creates and gives in abondance, whenever he can. He may not be particularly smart, or doesn't pay that much attention to his creations past their conception and first breath, but he means well and is still learning. He's a fairly new deity, replacing the previous one. Home is there to kindly help guide him to his new duties, along with Barnaby.

He's just a silly trying his best with great powers. Life is pretty mysterious, and not easy. The path is long and full of hardships, after all... but I don't think what gives the first breath of life is cruel for it. Life is still beautiful and should be cherished

I would like to ask if recently or in the past, you have received unpleasant comments saying that we are wrong in what we believe in addition to adding insults, etc. How have you learned to deal with it and if at any point have they hurt you emotionally?

aw heyy thanks for saying that!

oh yeah over the years i’ve had my share of flack and insults in my inbox or maybe i’ve had an altercation here or there, and sometimes you can put a bandaid on and go about your day but usually it’s still a cut you can feel. i guess the tl;dr: would be, i think that over the years ive learned to find the right blend of environment and outlook that sets me up to have it hurt less. also i think being able to contextualize hate dismantles its power greatly.

the big thing that youve got to have the ability to laugh at yourself. this is such a wild situation to be in! embrace it. a little self deprecation goes a long way. if you let go of the need to be understood by everyone and you recognize how wild of a situation it is that we are in, and if you can laugh about it, it cures most things imo.

next you have to keep the context of the hate in mind. a lot of things i’ve had said to me just dont hurt because i know the people saying them just don’t understand what they’re talking about 😆 maybe this comes with time.. like maybe if you hang around long enough it will click, but people from different parts of the fandom are speaking from completely different languages of meaning and beliefs and so i’ll see a comment and just be like wow that’s so fascinating how this person got compelled to compose that and say it with their whole chest. couldn’t be me!

another thing is just, it has a lot to do with where we are at and what i believe or what other like minded people do. to us, we have kiiinda already reached a kaylor win condition. i know people would disagree and i get why, but to me, in the grand scheme of things, i don’t feel the need to argue or defend because we’re already there. we’ve already made it! all the rest is a bonus to me. and so what this outlook does is it makes any hate seem really really quaint. like don’t care if rude people don’t understand. why would they deserved to? 😆 they should stay right where they are.

i think hate can hurt more when you at a point where you are less confident of what you think or if you want to listen to everyone and make sense of everyone as a way to uphold ‘fairness’ or a sense of a greater community but, when you are around long enough and get a better sense of each groups’ different motivations, you come to realize that your good intentions to involve and convince everyone is a bit of a fool’s errand because at the tops of each group is a core that will never move from their position. in the end it’s just more about a personal journey, i think. and i think usually you pick a lane or a group and just stick to it and most of the drama feels different because when you stop feeling the need to litigate, hate becomes confrontation for confrontation’s sake, and then the hate stops being about you, and you can see it as a part of a bigger thing.

also one key thing… i think it’s eons easier to avoid everyday conflict on places like tumblr than on twitter. it’s easier to curate what you have on your blog and its not a very public facing platform so things are more quiet and don’t spread to the general public. this filters out a ton. and there’s less eyes on your stuff and like people can screenshot and bitch on their own space but it’s not a quote tweet so you don’t really have this sense if you’re being talked about. you can block and even block individual IP’s, or on the flip side you can monitor activity on statcounter and see patterns of where messages come from and it kind of dismantles the mystique of them. tumblr makes it a lot easier to just do your thing. it’s not always in your face. and i would have a different persona and talk differently if i was on a different platform.

and i think people in general are better at staying in their lane here than on other platforms. over the years we have all sort of found our pockets and in general we stay in them, i think! so the stuff i do get is just always worded and delivered in the same way so i know its from the same people so it’s a little bit like kramer popping in on any given episode of seinfeld. it’s just part of the routine at this point 😆

•I feel like Kaldur would love his s/o no matter what body type they are. In fact I think he enjoys having a plus sized s/o!

•I think naturally because he is atlantian he is naturally cold blooded so he's Cold all the time. He can mostly handle the coldness but sometimes he just really needs the body heat. Thankfully your there to provide him that (⁠◠⁠‿⁠◕⁠)

•I think he would be confused if you ever told him you were insecure of your weight (or looks for that matter) because he naturally finds you perfect and doesn't see anything of you that you should be insecure about (although he doesn't get why people would get insecure of something that's apart of them anyway) so he remind you of how perfect you are and it shouldn't matter what other people think. Then lightly scold you for thinking negatively of yourself.

"Kaldur? What are you doing?"

Kaldur looks at you from his position next to the fireplace. He blushes slightly from embarrassment of you catching him trying to warm up while having a heavy coat and warm sweatpants on. "Sorry. I was just trying to warm up." You chuckle at his apology and pat the spot next to you on the couch. "Come here, love." He shyly comes up next to you on the couch. He sits and you immediately pull him into you, wrapping your arms around him into a tight warm snuggle.

He tenses at first, but slowly eases into you and your warmth.

He wraps his arms around you and rests his head on your chest, taking in a deep breath and releasing as all the tension and aches in his body dissipates from all the missions he's had to do recently.

•Conner I don't think would even notice that you were plus sized because he really doesn't focus on appearances. As long as you accept him, he'll accept you.

•I think it would take him a couple of months into the relationship to realize that you get insecure about your weight mostly because he doesn't know a lot of things to begin with and is honestly new to most things in this world.

•So it would probably take him finding you crying in your room and you explaining why to him to figure this out.

•At first he wouldn't get why you would be insecure in the first place before realizing that this is similar to how he felt when Kent rejected him for being just a clone of him instead of accepting him as family (I resented Kent for awhile because of this(⁠눈⁠‸⁠눈⁠) )

•He would then comfort you by holding you and telling you you're perfect and you shouldn't change for anyone. Of course there are times you would do this for him after an encounter with Superman but that's for another time.

"s/o? Are you in here?" His eyes widen when he hears the cries and sobs of his partner coming from her bed. Immediately he rushed to the bed and pulled the covers from over you thinking that you were hurt.

He looks at your disheveled face and his heart breaks. He scans over you to make sure you're not hurt while you try to hide yourself from him, not wanting him to see you like this.

He sighs in relief not seeing you hurt anywhere. However, that doesn't calm his racing mind of why you're upset.

"S/o what's wrong? Why are you crying?" He asks in worry, cupping the sides of your face so he can look at you. As he waits for you to answer he wipes your cheeks as the tears slid down them. Nervously you avoid eye contact and instead focus on the big S on his shirt. "I-I just…… it's just so hard. Everyday I go to school I get picked on for my size and I just can't help but look at the mirror and see how right they are about me. I can never fit certain clothes and some clothes that are supposed to make you look and feel good it just…. Doesn't" you stop as the tears well up and slide down your cheeks again, another sob threatening to come from your throat.

Conner's frown deepens as he hears this and it hurts to see how lowly you think of yourself when you're like a goddess in his eyes.

He can't help but see the similarities between you and him about being accepted. Whether by society or by someone close to you.

He slowly crawls into bed with you, gathering your sobbing figure inso his arms and bringing you under the covers with him. You instinctively curl into him for comfort and you feel his fingers brushing through your hair soothingly.

"You are the most beautiful person I have ever known. It doesn't matter what size you are, or what your skin color is, or what clothes you wear. All that matters is that your you and you should never change yourself for someone."

You sniffle as a blush comes to your face from the compliment. "Thank you, my love. You don't know how much this means to me. I love you."

•Listen, listen. Your big spoon. Now there is no secret that he wasn't exactly tall nor very muscular and there's no doubt that you were the tall one in the relationship (until he hit his damn growth spurt) but I would feel like he would try to be big spoon but give up and just let you hold him.

•I feel like he would spoil you rotten with gifts, whether if it's comfortable clothes, snacks, or desserts he would get it for you.

•He's very perceptive and smart so if you were feeling insecure or sad about how you look or about your weight he would know way before anyone else. He would listen to you rant and would try to do something about how you feel. If it's because of someone talking down on you then he would use the power of being a Wayne to his advantage. Full on pulling up at your school in those black van things and having Alfred come along (Because Alfred loves you because you always compliment his cooking and even give him pointers on things.) And put on a big scene of how you're his partner and if anyone messes with you he won't be afraid to do something about it.

•But if it's because it's how you're feeling on your own then he'll offer to do something like sparring or going on a jog with you to help you blow off steam and see if you wanna keep doing that.

"Hey sweets!" You turn at the sound of your nickname. Only one person calls you that…. "Dick?! What are you doing here?!" You question him as he casually strolls up to you and wraps his arms around your waste. "Oh nothing! Just wanted to pick you up today and take you on a date." You look at him, your eyebrow twitching with annoyance once you realize what he's really doing as you watch him side eye the girls and guys that were picking on you for your weight the other day.

"Dick!" you whisper harshly, trying to scold him for using his fame and popularity to intimidate and scare your bullies. And what's worse. Is that it's working.

You roll your eyes as he leans up and kisses your cheek before pulling you back to the car that he pulled up in. Alfred steps out and opens the door for you both. You then notice he is also eyeing your bullies. You feel yourself flushing red from embarrassment but don't have time to indulge on that as Alfred greets you before Dick pulls you into the car.

The door closes and you watch Alfred head to the front of the car. You turn your head to the little maniac you call your boyfriend and sigh.

"You know you love me." You can practically hear the smirk in his voice.

"I'm starting to question it now…" you pause. "But this is why I love you, dork" you chuckle.

He smiles lovingly at your smile and laugh and responds back.

"I love you too, sweets"

THE OFFICIAL (WELL, UNTIL I NO DOUBT ALTER ALL OF THIS COMPLETELY) GUIDE TO WRITING CASTIEL TOWNSEND BOFA TOWNSEND(????)

alright :) so.

first of all, i refer to him quite frequently as ‘cas’ in this. technically, its not a good move on my part, that, considering every iteration of castiel technically has a name that shortens to ‘cas’, and so if i go around taking about ‘cas’, i could mean, basically, uh… anyone. but through this guide alone, every reference to an entity called ‘cas’ is the one and only ‘castiel townsend(???)’ from the title of the text. that’s the guy in question. got that? great!

this focuses primarily on his dialogue and actions during said dialogue, in five sections ive labelled 'vocabulary', 'amount said', 'accompaniment', 'style', and 'tone', but that's just because he talks a whole bunch. anything additional about how he thinks and acts is in a last section called 'additional' (self explanatory name, innit) but i will probably add to that bit as we go!

so. without further ado, because this is already long enough:

VOCABULARY

cas's vocabulary is... like i've said, a weird mix between normal, comprehensible, though millennial-esque slang and more archaic or nonstandard terms and words. he's a big fan of 'remiss' and 'brogue', but will in exactly the same breath, call someone a boomer. the archaic side of his vocabulary leans more to the shakesperian, but anything poe-esque is absolutely not off the table. just go ham. sprinkle the longest and most complicated words you know into his vocabulary, and you'll be set. don't even worry about using them correctly.

he also uses lines like 'the jig's up' and then immediately gets bullied for it. as he should honestly.

he is also...frequent with his amount of pop culture references. basically, anything you know, you're absolutely entitled to make him know too. go wild. bonus points if it's a shit piece of media. books, films, tv shows-- whatever! go for it.

oh that's another thing. frequent user of 'whatever'. 'whatever' traditionally means 'this thing is impacting me but i can shrug it off enough to ignore it'. he's 'whatever'd murders. and the existence of the compound. basically, unless it causes him to break down on the spot, it's 'whatever'.

you can never use it too much. go wild.

he also uses a LOT of british terms. he's not a 'luv' kind of a man- he's not reached that far- but 'lawks' (exclamation of surprise? ish? somewhere between surprise and oh god) and 'git' and 'goit' and 'wanker' (all insults. we brits are an contentious bunch.) are very much on the table lmaoo

honestly anything goes! he is actively abusing these terms, so don't worry abt getting anything wrong you got this!

AMOUNT SAID

a lot. all of the time.

cas talks like its an olympic sport and he's going for gold. if you're ever sitting there thinking 'is this enough castiel dialogue??' the answer is no. write more. he rambles, he elaborates, he doubles back, he goes off on tangents- and it's ten times worse whenever he's nervous, which is more than he usually lets on. nervous? him? he'd never be nervous. not at all. honestly, it's ridiculous you'd think that. why would he be nervous? what would that possibly be about? don't be silly. he's never been scared a day in his life. except for that one time. with the crocodile. and that had really just been a log, so that one didn't count. <- like that. but ten times more.

oh, that's the other thing! he frequently trails into random stories about his past that have just. never come up before and never will again. make those up as you will. be wild! his backstory up to the age of 18 will never be fully ironed out i think, so you have total free rein.

cas will and does abruptly switch to very...clipped dialogue- like, 1-2 words max. this is a powerful tool, because its an indication that something is Very Very Horrifically Terribly Wrong. this is when he's terrified out his mind, or exhausted beyond reason, or has been through something absolutely abysmal. it is traditionally very rare, and a Very Bad Sign. unless you're trying to get him to do what you want, in which case this is the ultimate way of indicating that you're well on the way there.

this is the reason why fully docile compound cases will maybe say 1-2 words a year if they're feeling particularly chatty-- and the reason why that's a very big thing.

ACCOMPANIMENT

castiel is a man who cannot and will not stay still for long, particularly when talking. sometimes he paces, sometimes he gestures, sometimes he unscrews things or tries flipping items (books, knives, pens- anything in reach really) with varying levels of success. sometimes (if hes behaving or acting more nonchalant) he'll just go 'okay whatever' and go on tumblr mid-conversation. point is, even if you tied him to a chair, he's not staying still, particularly with his hands. go for it. make him do whatever. i will cheer you for it.

STYLE

when I said that 'he elaborates, he doubles back, he goes off on tangents', i meant he often does so m- i mean- thaaaat he often stops himself partway through a word or an idea just to start a new one. or he'll stop mid sentence just to-- just to reconsider the sentence and then continue going with it.

his mouth moves faster than his brain, and so often he'll say something like a lie or a comment or an analogy and have to decide whether or not to try and go back on it or stick with it to the end.

as i described it once to my good friend @heshemikey, 'if he's in a situation where he needs to not joke or not lie he'll often joke or lie and then immediately double back on it he can't ?? not say things? if you get what i mean??'

which is basically. just. cas in his purest form tbh.

TONE

i left this one til last because its the most(??) variable of the lot?

there is constantly a nonchalance, a lack of caring, a projection of being in control to what he says. he's not scared, he knows what he's doing, he's in charge. those kind of vibes. even though its highly unlikely any of the three are true, especially all at once. but depending on where he is in the timeline- where he is in his life, even- the actual terms of that can differ quite a bit. early cas- pre wbg cas-- honestly, pre OVER cas-- does this by acting like a little bit of an arsehole. he's not exactly a touchy-feely guy, he's not exactly open with his affections (though he does have them, and does show them. in his own ways.) and tends to act anywhere from a manipulative asshole to just a dude who Does Not Give A Shit Abt What You're Saying.

as my dearly beloved friend @felixcosm (expert of the early stages of cas) points out, when i say hes 'acting like a little bit of an arsehole', what i mean to say is that he is an extremely bratty, petulant kind of guy. he is…very frustrated, at w.bg, at his husband, at himself, and everything he says mirrors that. the manipulation he exerts is his own attempts to grasp some kind of control over his situation. though when that is inevitably not enough, or it slips through his fingers, he's prone to being a pissy little bastard about it <3

he argues frequently with a wide variety of people (particularly his husband, though anyone who opposes him is probably going to get an earful)- a little hot-headed, a little overconfident, and a lot in denial about it all.

i can feel him in the back of my brain denying it right now. that's how in denial he is. he's constantly in denial and he never stops– at any point in his life, really. if in doubt: make him in denial. great trick. works every time.

through OVER (which is where he's actually quite awkward, especially around people who're nice to him, like hunter) and experiences with the compound, and the flinchites- this begins to transition into the other end of the scale. which is a part of his life i call the pw era. pw era cas is... completely opposing. he's smug, he's amused, he's constantly finding things that Are Not Funny to be funny. he doesn't take anything- or anyone- very seriously.

he's also very, very touchy. he frequently puts his arm around people's shoulders, or pats them on the back, or offers to keep them warm at night, or basically anything that could border on being annoying or discomforting. that's the other thing- he- pw era, especially- delights in causing people discomfort. not horrific amounts, but anywhere from annoyance to pure upset is somewhere he's willing to stoop to. if he thinks something is going to hurt someone's feelings, he'll say it. there's a possibility, depending on their reaction, that he might double back and apologise, but first and foremost he's going to come out with the smugly snide comment in question

i think he's constantly trying to get under people's skin? if he causes them to have a flat-out breakdown, then he'll tune his annoyance levels down quite a bit, but his main goal is still always to get under the skin of the person he's addressing, and he'll stop at nothing to succeed.

ADDITIONAL (yayyy!)

so. this is a little about how he behaves, a little how he thinks and acts. ive been reading through how i write him and realising i really? do not dwell on those much? but let's see what we can do here :)

okay. so.

one of the first things you're ever going to know about cas is that he has a crap marriage. this is never not true, and he will never not bring it up if he finds an opening- honestly, no matter what point in his life he's at.

it gets to the point where he will follow various comments- 'they were not exactly being punctual', and 'the fact he might have been lying didn't once occur to me' are the two i can think off the top of my head, but it's a frequent occurrence- with 'story of my marriage', or something of the sort. sorry. that was dialogue again. point is, he's never not really thinking abt his marriage and how crap it was. you can ALWAYS make it abt his marriage. yippee. no matter how wild the line previous is, chances are he'll compare anything to his husband. he's like a character from a boomer comic but slightly less divorced. not by want of trying, though.

certain details of said marriage are things i still need to iron out but uhh. come to me for more on that baby. or ask felix. whatever you will.

in the same vein, he regularly fidgets with his wedding ring. never takes it off, no matter what- no, he'd sooner lose the whole hand than the ring itself- but he's a constant fidgeter. all of the time. he probably does it in his sleep to be honest.

that being said: VERY deep sleeper. usually goes to bed at a stupid hour of the morning and can't actually be woken until. noonish?

and i mean, like. deep. deeeppp. capable of sleeping through an entire tornado kinda deep.

he also drools :). funfact. probably snores too. loser.

OH! also. pw era cas especially has…weird levels of what he considers a friend (or, for that matter, a romantic partner). like. if you converse with him civilly for about three seconds, you're his best friend and he'd die for you. if you're someone who's skin he wants to get under (whether he succeeds or not), its about on the same level as a marriage proposal. that, and a few other factors. he's once offered to marry enigma simply because he didn't murder castiel in his sleep- the bar is like On The Floor Here.

he also defines marriage as a platonic ideal too. like he's fully capable of having a platonic relationship with someone and being like hey we're married now actually <3

basically? you have free rein on that one too. i don't know the exact standards of how he develops this relationship or why or what the difference is between who he considers a friend and who he considers a Possible Spouse. uh.

go nuts. show nuts. whatever. don't show nuts, actually. put your nuts away.

has a knife on him. at all times. always.

okay, he doesn't have a knife on him at certain points, but we don't count those. just presume he has a knife on him. amazing. i keep presuming he has a knife on him and then realising he probably doesn't and having to hope nobody notices my mistake. so really you should be all good.

does not frequently shower. sorry. he's a bit of a greasy mess at any given moment. somewhere between it not being his top priority and not having enough money to pay for the water bill involved. SAD!

actually i will bribe you; whoevers reading this? please god make a fic in which he gets forced to shower. he won't listen to me and someone needs to get his ass in line here.

please. i'll give you my lifes savings. a whole twenty pence.

on that note (there's been a LOT of notes, hasn't there? sozzles.) he will do pretty much anything for money. if you can pay him a living wage, he'll stick with you. whether that involves the risk of bear attacks or, like, human experimentation or whatever, just offer him a couple of quid an hour and he'll probably go along with it.

there's rent to pay, man. you gotta.

sorely lacking in the moral compass department. freaks out about killing people, freaks out while killing people, but acts like he's totally fine with and good at murder- almost well enough for it to be convincing. the freakouts are more about the act of having to watch someone die over the implications it has on his moral standing, anyway.

okay, hes not sorely lacking. he's actually kind of a morally upright guy, if you ignore the murder and the being an asshole.

he doesn't steal, he doesn't, like– what's another crime? he doesn't do a lot of crime. that's the point.

he doesn't care, he's not morally impacted by any choice he makes, but he doesn't do illegal shit without a real, actual, genuine reason about it.

likes kids. unironically. he's a little awkward around them, but he's kind of a little awkward around everyone. definitely the kind of guy who speaks to and treats kids like they're just adult human beings, and honestly doesn't do too bad a job of it either.

he's actually never interacted with a child in canon yet. goddamn. right, another twenty pence for whoevers willing to do that. oo and it's a lovely shiny twenty pence too ooooooooo

he's canonically good at sleight of hand! mostly it's just stupid little tricks he's taught himself when bored- like vanishing coins, or cards, or anything small enough to realistically do that with- but he's proud of himself for getting so good at it, and honestly? so am i. maybe someday he'll learn how to do a whole magic trick. we can only imagine.

basically, i'm realizing i've written an imposing amount of stuff to remember- none of which is really necessary, mostly just small details!- and it’s kind of going to feel like a right task now to put it all together.

not to fear though, because my most amazing companion tumblr user @heshemikey (who I constructed this guide at the behest of, though they know how to write castiel technically better than myself and do an amazing job of it (and are generally just a wonderfully cool dude!)) has been so kind as to provide me with examples of their depictions of pw era cas, which i’ve been able to annotate with comments about how much i love their ocs- er, i mean, pull apart to show some of these qualities i’ve been discussing and how it all fits together.

note the colour coding :). now. i am a lil colourblind, so you might have to correct me if i get any of these wrong, but let’s see…

orange is a quality i didn’t bring up yet, which is his tendency to place emphasis on more words than technically necessary– to make his words sound a little more dramatic, or flourishing, or emotional.

or, particuarly in the early days, to get a point across (fig 1. & 2.)

astounding. shut up, castiel.

moving on! light?? blue???? you’d call that a light blue, right?

that’s actions specifically to do with body and limbs– because castiel is very expressive with those, frequently when speaking- usually, almost more notably than he actually is facially. he isn’t a man to do anything by halves, yknow? he doesn’t stay still often, and he makes a point of the fact.

green is his weird, nonstandard terminology, or extended vernacular. like heshemikey says, he’s the kind of dude who ‘knows a lot of super obscure fancy words that he uses in normal conversation’, which is honestly so true. look up a list of fancy words and just sprinkle em in and you’re set.

PINK! pink is blatant denial of emotions. it’s not a pw cas fic without it! basically, every time he feels an emotion that isn’t ‘being a smug bastard’, he’s actually never felt that feeling before, never will again, and frankly, is not feeling right now. emotions? he doesn’t do emotions, babeyy.

teal is for his ramblings, his tangents, his going off-on-a-little-spree-iness. if you’re not sitting there writing his dialogue and going oh my GOD castiel shut the HELL UP!! then you’re probably missing a tangent or two down the line. they’re fun to write! they’re just also A Lot.

gray-bluey-purple is ‘whatever’. if someone ever writes castiel dialogue and uses the word ‘whatever’ i let out a little whoop whenever i read it! like YEAH thats his thing!! its a very important word x3

red is also something i haven’t brought up before, which is his habit? occasional frequent practice? of asking questions- whether that’s at the other person, himself, or the universe in general. he’s, uh, basically a big fan!

i WOULD pull apart a piece of text from his pre-wbg, pre-pw days, but alas i don’t have a snippet quite big enough or right enough to do this with– trust me, i’ve checked x(

Duna: Unlike Raptin and Dynal, Duna really just regards the humans at first with indifference instead of like... active malice, which I find interesting. She was just doing her job. In the trio of Hunter, Rosie, and Duna, Duna has the braincell. Actually, even between the dinaurians she has the braincell. Kinda funny since shes like 14. The fact that she chooses to defy her entire species to help humanity after Hunter saves her, knowing the consequences, is really brave of her. She's quite compassionate, even if she's not as outwardly emotional, and her being more calm and logical is a nice contrast to rosie's energy and short-temperedness.

Raptin: Ah the angry raptor man. Like Duna, he was just doing his job, and tried to see it through to the end. His undying loyalty to his kind cannot be overlooked, even if he was a total bitch to humanity. That's probably why he's an Elite in the first place. He loves his people more than anything and will do anything to ensure their survival. Like yeah he fucks up majorly and I think Rosie should get to maim him (she should get to maim many people honestly), but I still like him lol. Nothing will justify that ugly ass green he has though, like the devs could have chosen any other shade of green?

Dynal: I've already mentioned him trying his best for his people (he and Raptin are similar in that regard) after the whole Guhnash ate their planet thing. Another thing I like is just his presence throughout the story. Everytime he shows up you get this feeling of "oh shit, that's a guy you don't wanna mess with". He exudes power and elegance, and this comes across pretty well in his battle form too. He even outsmarts the protags, disguising himself as Richmond to trick them into assembling and handing him the missing sub-idolcomp, raising the stakes and really showing off how much of a threat he is. Dynal means business, and he has no problems letting everyone know it. But even then, he has a high sense of honor and believes in a fair fight. I still find it kind of funny that one fight earned his respect (it didn't earn Raptin's) and losing the fight would not have stopped him from pressing the button, but he was just like "oh humans are cool now, guess I don't wanna make them extinct after all". Also I just really like his design and theme.

ALSO his stupid little evil laugh he does when he plots to get the sub-idolcomp back. Literally boo ah hahaha levels of cartoonish evil lmao

BONUS MINI RANT ABOUT THEIR APPEARANCES IN CHAMPIONS BECAUSE BRUH

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?? Duna seems like herself, so I won't really talk about her.

One thing to note is how they all refer to humans as mammals in a more demeaning manner, and how every human runs from them. I refuse to believe EVERY human, especially in the world of fossil fighters, that they came across ran from them.

Raptin... bro... I get that you're a bitch but you had your arc last game. LIKE... he seems frustrated because people keep running away from him (he brings up the fact that humans look too greasy for him to EAT?? HELLO??), but Dino/Dina approaches him, and he's just mean to them. Probably why they run, Raptin. He does tell the protag that if they're lucky, Dynal won't eat them. Bro. Maybe don't spread rumors about your king EATING HUMANS? YOU KNOW, THE BEINGS YOU AND HIM SHARE A PLANET WITH NOW? Common Raptin L

I love power dynamics in ships, and people who absolutely should not be together. I love people who could destroy one another if they chose to. Whose family or society would be horrified they are together. Bonus points if they are definitely fucking each other up, but continue anyway.

Dongfang Qingcang/Shangque - Love between fairy and devil Ghostship

I love the idea that Shangque is this ancient, powerful dragon but is utterly devoted to Qingcang, knows all his habits, looks after his little mood swings, let's him feel like he's in control even though he probably knows rightly how to manipulate him if he wanted to. Qingcang is the definition of cringefail edgy villain who tries not to show that he's squishy in the middle but only for the right people.

VegasKim - Kinnporsche Ghostship

I really don't care at all about the cousins angle here. When you take a step back and think, our weirdness about that is rooted in concerns around genetic risks and that's uh, not really an issue with same-sex stuff, y'know? Anyway, no, the bit that does it for me is that both families would be outraged, and that they are both utterly tough and unhinged about the family business and absolutely could destroy one another. And they are definitely fucking up each other's lives, ambitions, and self-identity.

Gahan - The Devil Judge main co-stars

Kim Gaon and Kang Yohan are so clearly into each other. So much fascination with each other, how the others operates, what motivates them, the grudging respect. But also just really hot for it. The roaming eyes on both sides when shirts are off. The moments of softness Yohan allows to slip out, the moments of brokenness and anger that Gaon suffers Yohan to witness, how they betray each other but are inexorably drawn together again anyway. I love the moment Yohan risks discovery to save Gaon. I love the moment Gaon risks his life to go down with Yohan. I love both gradually realising the other will come to rescue them, no matter what the risk. I love the age gap. I love how different they are, and how they are two broken pieces which fit together perfectly nonetheless. It's messy and beautiful.

Honorable mentions: WangXian ults, obvs. But I can't put them in every single one of these so I'm trying to branch out.

I'll say it.  At this point, there is no reason Master Fairs should not start receiving grid expansions.  They deserve it.  Especially the earlier ones, who were, barring a few, mostly kept in check by limitations that would be unconscionable by modern standards.  So with that, I'm aiming to solve the Master Fairs.

With 3/5.  Yeah, I feel like the tradeoff needs to be better application of expansions.  DeNA is a business first and foremost, and everything comes down to what gets people to pull, but you have to cultivate good will and plan the long game too.  3/5 cultivates good will.  People who invested get a nice bonus, people who didn't have a bit of incentive to try and pull or break out the candy as needed.  The 5/5 is what happens when the PokeFair cash stops flowing. Which I expect to be a while given current rates of "Sometimes we just didn't make any."  Still bothered, by the way.

LEON Sp Atk +20, Speed +20, Maximum Super Powered 5 (5), MAX Countdown 2 (5), Sharp Entry 1 (3), Trainer Move: Ferocious Moves (3).

Leon is relatively easily solved, thanks to the recent upgrade with Max Moves. Those...really salvage a lot for our boy.  My solution here is to provide something that emphasizes current events: greater power for move and sync damage while on-type.  His multipliers as they stand are...well, they're not good.  But they function.  Burn Synergy is about as strong a multiplier as one could hope for with DPS that high.  I think aiming for on-type, as a Master Fair with three types being covered and near-top DPS in all of them, is valid.  Specifically, we are copying Bede right now, with Maximum Super Powered 5, for a 50% bonus to move, sync, and Max Move damage.  "Isn't that a bit much?"  Yep!   It's a goddamn Master Fair, you're gonna look at SST Red and C!Marnie and Ash, and tell me Leon getting 80% move damage on Inferno is too much?  They let Alder have 60% on Hyper Beam for god's sake.

MAX Countdown 2 is for fast-ramping applications.  Any other user of Head Start can now access a full turn saved.  I like to envision that his 5/5 grid would give TM: Propulsion so he can do it himself.  Sharp Entry saves a little bit of buffing needs, while Ferocious Moves applies another +1 to both offensive stats. Simplified.

His grid would demand you give up either Scorching Sync 5 (sane) or Burn Synergy 3 (I guess if you want), but you can easily acquire all of them.  I would expect 5/5 to offer TM: Propulsion, Solar Sync or Solarize, a more standard sync buff, and a skill that auto-recharges his Trainer Move by 1MP, or Ferocious Entry 3.  These would come together to make a devastating damage dealer with a metric ton of power behind his attacks.

MAXIE HP +40, Atk +20, Sunny Disposition (5), Healing Sun (3), Haymaker (5), Charging Sun 3 (3)

Maxie is still decent, being quite good in CS but kinda meh in Gauntlet, so an expansion isn't as needed for him.  But also I feel like he does need it because good lord with the Gauntlet issues.  I feel like his damage is really good already, both for Solarbeam and Precipice Blades.  The main issues are his survival in Gauntlet, his pitiful sync, and lack of utility.  Haymaker fixes a lot about his sync nuke, legitimizing Solar Sync.  Sunny Disposition blocks the debuffs from his own setup, while Healing Sun gives needed sustain in Gauntlet.  Charging Sun is additional DPS, only under Sun.  Possibly unnecessary, but my rationale is that, when it comes to Gauntlet, you will run out of Sun, and then DPS drops off a cliff.  You really, really want Sun active.  And since he already extends, and only gets one activation, I think aiming to speed up the DPS is a legitimate alternative.

Maxie's kinda tough to shop for, because any improvements to damage just wreck CS harder than he already did, while all he really wants is more Sun application in Gauntlet to keep up pressure.  It's tough for me.  I'm not sure what's best.  Also they're getting Primal Reversions, right?   It's so weird that didn't happen.

ARCHIE Sp Atk +20, Speed +20, Stormy Disposition (5), Refreshing Rain (3), Brainpower (5), Furious Brain (3)

Inverse of Maxie, who has the same issues.  Not going to dwell.  The main issue for him is just the presence of Moltres, who he does not appropriately counter.  At all.  Which, to make that work, you really just need to be able to halt weather changes.  I think there's a skill from the co-op Flannery fight in the CS area, where she blocks weather changes after setting Sun.  I think that's what Primal Reversion should have.

ANNI LILLIE Sp Atk +20, Speed +20, Brainpower (5), Crit Strike 3 (5), Recuperation 2 (4), Fast Track 9 (4)

I'm still kinda pissed about what they did to Lillie.  Brain Sync 3, fuck off. Anyway, Brainpower is going to fix that shit right now.  And we're giving her Crit Strike 3, because she is owed.  It's a consistent multiplier that doesn't rely on high gauges with a four-bar spam and like no gauge control.  Fast Track 9 helps with her gauges, allowing her to more reliably fire off attacks.  Recuperation 2 aims to recover a bunch of HP in one blast.

For sync-based grids, where you actually can use it, you can take Soften Up, MGR on Moongeist Beam, Power Flux 3, both sync damage tiles, both multipliers, and either Fast Track or Recuperation depending on need.  For the Gauntlet stages where sync doesn't bypass reduction, dropping Power Flux will allow you to take Crit Strike, Recuperation, and Fast Track all at once, neglecting Brainpower as an unnecessary skill, while maintaining Healthy Healing and Potion MPR.

ANNI N Sp Atk +20, Speed +20, Noble Roar: Double Down (5), Sharp Entry 1 (3), Hostile Environment 3 (5), Trainer Move: Precision Pals (3)

N is really hard to shop for, because a lot of his tools are already really strong. But there are a few I think make good sense.  The obvious being, give the man Double Down.  Come on.  There is no reason for debuffing that slow.  I am setting it to just Noble Roar, in case the idea of AoE -2 special defense on a major attack is considered too much (it is).  Sharp Entry eases his self-setup tremendously as well.   Hostile Environment 3 allows him to hit guarantee with the other HE1, while Precision Pals is a bit of team support for accuracy, as well as the much-needed extra point for himself to start firing after one use.

The main issue with N's grid is energy.  Full sync multipliers leave 18 energy, and that way you can afford this stuff.  But I actually like Pep Rally a lot better when it comes to Gauntlet, and while you have 16 energy left, it only works if you're giving up Piercing Gaze.  Which is why I placed so much emphasis on accuracy.  Latias as a threat needs to be neutralized, and this aims to take care of it.

ANNI STEVEN Atk +20, Sp Atk +20, Rising Tide (5), Pinpoint Entry 2 (3), Ferocious Entry 2 (5), Ramming Speed (3)

Steven's DPS is actually solid, the problem has always been his sync, and the decision of whether or not to use it.  Rising Tide is the best possible multiplier, factoring in his natural need for a bunch of stats, and a higher multiplier than usual.  Pinpoint Entry 2 is mostly here for some added unusual damage that instantly fixes Draco Meteor's accuracy, while Ferocious Entry 2 grants a bit of firepower right away, that doubles up when he mega evolves.  Ramming Speed is the move damage multiplier as needed.

Now.  Steven's sync grid actually permits both Clear Sync-Up and two power nodes, with all of these traits.  His DPS builds can easily accommodate the adjustment as well, taking Fleet Feet and Ramming Speed without issue.  While it's close, he is able to squeeze in Weather Wipe as well for Moltres.

SS LUSAMINE Sp Atk +20, Speed +20, Bedazzle 2 (5), Furious Brain (3), Healthy Healing (3), Recharging Strike 9 (5)

Alright, let's talk serious business.  SS Lusamine exists on a could different axes.  Her sync is tremendous, but mostly only on-type, due to the horrid uselessness of Hide and Sync.  Her DPS is thus her main source of excitement when off-type, but due to the nature of it, her single-target damage for Gauntlet isn't ideal.  What we need is something that salvages her weakest traits.

Bedazzle 2 drops accuracy two stages on entry.  As a transforming Pokemon, this is a guaranteed -4 just from entry skills for Hide and Sync.  Now it's at least somewhat viable.  Furious Brain offers a serious multiplier for her move damage, making it more effective for Gauntlet stages.  Healthy Healing allows her to recover some HP per action, which is nigh-invaluable in Gauntlet contexts.  But the most important angle is Recharging Strike.   The -1 speed hurts, and Lusamine would desperately like to have access to Recharging Strike for a guaranteed gauge recovery at minimum.  These options fix pretty much every issue Lusamine has.  The only alternative I considered was Propulsion on Trainer Move, but that felt like a 5/5 skill given how ridiculous full self-ramp is.  Technically C!Marnie got it, but at full cost in an awkward spot that gives up other tools, so that feels like the balancing act to play.  I did consider Obscuring Power 3 as the move multiplier as well, but there are quite a lot of stages that can boost accuracy, and I was admittedly worried about her multipliers vanishing over it.

RENEGADE CYNTHIA Atk +20, Sp Atk +20, Mind Games 9 (5), Defense Crush 9 (5), Ghost Wish: Catalyzing Infliction (3), Brainteaser (3)

One of the great tragedies of Renegade Cynthia is how awkward her general kit is.  It's not bad, it's just not allocated well.  Her main grids leave literally nothing available.  MPR on her Zone pretty much always gets dropped.  So, with that in mind, what do we do to make Cynthia ridiculous?

In CS, her issue is gauges.  Plain and simple, it's the lack of gauge control for a team that is usually slow and demanding.  Gauge Acceleration on use of Ghost Wish would allow her team to maintain much more reliably.  Defense Crush and Mind Games are the consistent breakdown, that accomplishes two things: more precise multiplier activation, and saving 21 energy by dropping On a Roll 2. Seriously, there’s nothing else over there, and it costs a minimum of 21 energy to reach.  The last is just added DPS. Shadow Ball really isn't all that impressive at a baseline, so I feel it's justified.  Let it activate on lowered special defense, give her something faster acting.  While I considered Ghost Zone Extension, I feel like a Master Fair should have rank 5, and that feels much more like a 5/5 kind of skill, down near the MPR.

I'm obsessed with the latest popcast episode about Harry Styles. Jon Caramanica talks about Lindsay Zoladz in the first half about Harry's music and then Kaitlyn Tiffany come on and they all three talk about fandom (and their experiences of 1D concerts) and everything about it fascinates me.

I always love Jon Caramanica's takes on Harry Styles, from the legendary "Liking Harry Styles music is a symptom of liking Harry Styles". To his very on-brand plot twist that he actually likes Harry's House (and Cinema in particular - although he thinks it should have been about Cinnamon). And he upped that, when he was read the Sony leak powerpoint about the 1D members 'Beautiful, Cheeky and Adorably Slow' he said 'well that person deserves a raise, because they nailed 2022 Harry's persona'. But his takes were only the bonus.

What was endless fascinating to me, is how they kept returning tothe gap they very clearly identified. Lindsay Zoladz was about how much he wants to please and hold up his female listeners and says that she loses a sense of his perspective, and Jon Caramanica says it's the totality of his perspective and she replies "I feel like there has to be more there." And there was this massive space where the elephant may or not be and it was just left there.

And I'm not like 'critics responses to Harry's music proves he's closeted'. But what I do think it proves (to paraphrase Jon Caramanica in a different context) is that what we are noticing is real, that doesn't mean we're right - but it does mean we are responding to something that actually exists.

Although they also compared him to Shawn Mendes and Lil Nas X - and part of me was just like: "Oh come on! Can you acknowledge the spade when you're actively digging with it" (which of course they can't and they absolutely shouldn't - but it shows the impossible bind of the closet).

Jon Caramanica's comparison to Lil Nas X was fascinating - he said that both Harry and Lil Nas X were very good at being a celebrity, but there was something missing in their music which was the pretence of them being celebrities. And Lil Nas X was trying too hard, and Harry wasn't trying hard enough. Which I thought was a fascinating commentary on both queerness as spectacle, and the way queer artists are understood.

And then they brought on Kaitlyn Tiffany and things got even more interesting. I'm not going to go into great detail about Kaitlyn Tiffany's understanding of 1D and the line she seems to walk when presenting herself as a fan and fandom to people she sees as grownups.

What absolutely blew my mind about the episode was that Jon Caramanica asked Kaitlyn Tiffany: "Did fans forsee Harry's interest in fashion and his gender presentation, and if they did did they help make that happen by their interest?"

And her reply was: "The fashion thing did come as a surprise, because 1D dressed quite bad"

I've no idea what was going on for her there. Was she telling the truth, and within the fandom she knew nobody was noticing the nail polish that had been cleaned off, or the signs of exploration in 2014 and 2015? Was she deliberately prevaricating and avoiding the question, because she can't acknowledge what that would mean about fandom dynamics.

I was struck again about how incomprehensible 1D and its fandom are, unless you have some curiosity about Larries. Kaitlyn Tiffany is quite extreme in her investment in presenting Larries as illegitimate. But that perspective has permeated wider discourse about 1D. And it's worth noting that the idea that a group of fans are illegitimate and therefore curiosity is not appropriate is very odd within wider pop culture discourse. And I think it's worth thinking about both the cause and affect of that.

Twisted Wonderland Impressions So Far

- I was initially annoyed that I didn’t get assigned a house, but I love being stuck in the shithole Ramshackle dorm building with a demon cat. I love that everyone acknowledges I am a prefect of this dorm and also that this dorm is shit.

- I love that I technically have 1/2 an enrollment to the school because I have to share it with the demon cat. We are, by our powers combined, one full student.

- I was ALSO initially annoyed that I had to be paired with Ace and Deuce for like the whole first book, but they’ve grown on me! I love how he and Deuce went from strangers to bickery-but-inseparable friends like INSTANTLY.

- bonus points for Ace’s frequent “don’t give us a couple’s name” + “we’re not ALWAYS together” complaints, and meanwhile Deuce does not apparently give a single shit if other students think he’s dating Ace. (Or if he does care, I haven’t gotten to those scenes yet.)

- I don’t know how I feel about this, but Ace says shit like “cool beans” and “excuse us, king.” Cater might be the Instagram kid but Ace for SURE has a tumblr. Feels weird, man.

- Deuce is delightful: he knows exactly one spell, he loves his mom SO MUCH, and he is SO SERIOUS about being a better student and son. 100/10. He has a whole scene where he talks about bargain hunting/sale shopping with his mom and then rescues a classmate from a crush of students all trying to buy sale-price novelty pudding. What a darling.

- Also, the sale-shopping scene was the scene you get when you unlock his PE-uniform card? Like, everyone else’s PE scene is them actually in PE class or doing sports or something; Deuce puts on his PE uniform to better navigate the school sale.

- Kalim and Jamil are lovelyyy. Kalim is so bright and sweet and kind (and he’s one of the only students who has a light-themed attack? I think?), and Jamil is so patient to put up with him? And he so clearly loves Kalim even if Kalim does actively make bodyguard duties as fucking hard as possible.

- Another student is like, “You know, why don’t you just let him die? I would. He’s so much work,” and Jamil’s response is 100% “Don’t ever talk to me again, you sick freak.”

- Just the AU of the sultan and Jafar from Aladdin being childhood best friends and genuinely fond of each other is so surreal and delightful

- Love that the Maleficent house is 1/2 actual students, 1/2... ancient fae beings??? who have decided to attend high school?? One of them is I guess a dragon?? I’m FASCINATED. This house is WILD. Weird vibes all around, I feel like none of them should actually be at this school.

- Love the jazzy music that plays with when the Ursula house students show up. They look like they run a speakeasy. They dress like they’re in The Godfather. They sell one of their classmate’s eel-skin mucus as a skin cream. 100/10.

- #1 Eel boy Jade SEEMS nice and sweet and soft-spoken, but I’m pretty sure there’s an “I sold your soul to Satan for one corn chip” moment coming up.

- Apparently no one in my Potions class is allowed to go on class walks outside because we won’t stop trying to eat the poisonous mushrooms we find in the woods

- the inter-house friendships are very cute?? I haven’t encountered very many of these yet, but I love it when students from different houses are close friends with each other. Kalim being a big brother to Ortho is adorable.

- opposite end of that: Rook being an absolute weirdo to EVERYONE who isn’t human. Big “planning to pull a Most Dangerous Game with his classmates” vibe. BUDDY WHY.

Oooh, that can be a rather loaded and tricky question actually! DMC story is excusively all about the characters, but the thing about them is that they are NOT forward with their emotions at all, and much of their motivations and reasons have to be guessed/theorised. Another obstacle here for me is that the only DMC game I`ve played is 5 (for reasons, I'm unable to purchase any game right now, and frankly, 5 is the only one I`m interested in playing), so I know the story from a mix of youtube lore masters, wiki and fanfiction. This ranking is very much affected by my history with the fandom, so it may differ greatly from other fans. I will also include a small summary of what I consider to be the story of said game, and is ultimatively what I was ranking.

My ranking of DMC games (+ anime) goes:

DMC1

Dante meets Trish, fights and kills Vergil, is betrayed and later saved by Trish, fights and wins over Mundus with the power of Sparda

The Drama of this game is literally the foundation of the series, and I believe it fully deserves the #1 place on this list. This game has: arguably te Endgame villain of the series, the third and the darkest moment of the twins`s conflict and trauma. This was the perfect start point for the series and a great foundation for it. It also gets a bonus from me for the Nelo Angelo theme which features church organ sounds and I love that.

DMC5

(be prepared for lots of Vergils) Vergil is alive after escaping from Hell, he follows the only familiar power call of the Yamato, which leads him to cut off Vergil Son`s arm. Vergil comes back to his destroyed family home, looks at the family portrait, and decided to cut out his pain, which backfires significantly. Soul part of Vergil decides he cannot defeat Ass Vergil, so he goes to Vergil`s Brother for help with dealing the Ass Vergil, also requesting help from Vergil`s Newly One-Armed Son to deal with this. Ass Vergil summons, or uses the opportunity presented by a demonic blood tree to gain power and sits on his ass a lot. Vergil`s Brother goes to fight Ass Vergil, but underestimates him, which results in: Rebellion being destroyed by Ass Vergil; the ladies fading into the background of the story along with dreams of fans; Vergil`s Son is forever traumatized by the word ‘deadweight’, even more so than the loss of a limb; Dante ded. Vergil`s Son takes a break for a month, Vergil`s Soul tries out homeless lifestyle for the time. Vergil`s Son comes back with cool metal arms, wanders around and bonds a little with Vergil`s Soul. Vergil`s Soul finds the Legendary Vergil`s Father Sword, then finds Vergil`s Brother who, as it turns out, is not actually ded, but was somehow mistaken by the blood tree for Vergil, so it was actually able to revive Vergil`s Brother. Vergil`s Soul apologises to Vergil`s Brother by almost stabbing Vergil`s Brother with Legendary Vergil`s Father Sword. Vergil`s Brother is hurting and troubled by the possibility of Vergil`s Son being even more hurt, so he runs off to face the Ass Vergil again, and ignores Vergil Soul`s attempt at reaching out. Vergil`s soul is told by Vergil`s Mother Clone that ‘she is not his mommy’. Vergil`s Son tries to take out Ass Vergil himself, but fails and is saved by Vergil`s Brother, who used Vergil`s recommended method of demonic powering up of stabbing himself with cool swords. Vergil` Brother fights Ass Vergil, succeeds but Ass Vergil escapes. All Vergils chase Ass Vergil again, this time Vergil`s Brother finally beats him down. Vergil`s Soul is rapidly fading and Vergil`s Son saves him, which gives Vergil`s Soul some closure with his trauma. Vergil`s Brother does not want to handle any more Vergil-killing weight and lets Vergil`s Soul pretend to finish Ass Vergil off, but everyone is tricked by him and actual V e r g i l emerges. Vergil`s Brother is sick with Vergil`s behavior and runs straight into the fight. Vergil beats him away, challenges Vergil`s Brother to a duel in good health, and leaves Vergil`s Son behind with a ‘thank you’. Vergil`s Son is confused, Vergil`s Brother is enraged and this results in Vergil`s Son learning he is Vergil`s Son. After the revelation Vergil`s Brother beats Vergil`s Emotional Support Demon Pets and duels Vergil to the death. The duel is interrupted by Vergil`s Son who wants his family to stop fighting, and stops them from fighting by fighting Vergil instead. Vergil concedes the fight to Vergil`s Son, Vergil`s Brother notices Vergil playing nice, sees the opportunity to bond and Vergil`s go on a Hell vacation together, leaving Vergil`s Son to defend humans from demons.

The story of 5 is the best possible ending the series realistically could have gotten: Nero becomes more assured of himself and gets a Big piece of his lineage and identity he was missing; Vergil gets Dante back (for Nelo Angelo) by killing him; the main plot (and even some of the bosses, including King Cerberus, my beloved) of the game is copypasted 3 which WORKS because 3 is the first game in plot order, so it all circles back around, twins feel their deep need to recconnect with each other and have a repeat of The Fall together. 5 is very weirdly structured, has an overly long lead up (FIVE ASS VERGIL FIGHTS,Carl, F I V E) to its main hook, and it would not work in any other game. These characters have their own backstories, been throught a lot, and had their arcs already, which lets 5 be so weird and convoluded, and Work because the ending is everything the fans dreamed about, and it is how the story of twins was supposed to end from the start. 5 is a masterpiece in ending a game series and it`s great.

Also the entire game can be summed up by sony in a 5 minute trailer, which shows off all the amazing action and fun gameplay plus the emotinal core of the story, which was ultimately what inflicted me with the chronic and incurable DMC brainrot, and sold me the game. Dante learns Vergil is alive and kicking, kicking his ass a lot actually, Vergil gives Dante a very painful but essential for his continued survival power boost, Dante befriends Lady, teams up with Vergil for a fight, then they have epic final duel which Vergil secretly concedes and Dante wins, but Vergil falls into Hell deliberately, cutting his saving hand and leaving Dante alone and Dante names his agency after the incident

3 portrayes the conflict of brothers perfectly. If in 5 their relationship is at a point where both are too hurt by each other to see what they deeply, truly want (to recconect), and the only option left for them is to hate each other, in 3 we get to see exactly why the twins are so divided. 3 shows that both truly care for each other, even if seeing Vergils version of caring requires actual freaking scientific research, but their trauma and ambition drove them so much apart that they cannot reconcile anymore, and it is the point where their relationship gets shattered. The tragedy of twins is perfectly encapsulated in 3, and I imagine many fans will rank this game higher than I did for that reason. And, of course, I can`t rank 3 without mentioning Devils Never Cry - that song is a banger and is a beloved anthem of the series.

DMC Anime

Dante gets closure with his childhood trauma while on a job to protect a child from demons and bonds with her. He battles a huge demon, but is incapacitated during the fight, Patty gives Dante a moral support speech and he wins the fight. Patty leaves to live with her mother and anime ends with Dante missing her.

I really love the main story of the anime, and a huge Patty Propaganda Enjoyer. I lover her very much, and the closure she (unknowingly) gives Dante is very meaningful for him. This Dante is openly at his lowest point, and he really needed some connection in that moment (even if Pattys methods are unconventional). Her presense alone is certainly not enough to help him overcome the trauma, but it is a start. Another thing I love about the anime is the casual setting and small stakes episodes, DMC could use some more of that. Music bonus this time goes to Future in My Hands, which is a song that basically gets it own episode, and is, as far as I know, the only diegetic song in the series, which means that Dante himself actually listens to it and likes it. Also I enjoye the credits song I'll Be Your Home, which, yeah, DMC needed some chill female vocals song.

DMC4

Dante learns about Nero, together they fight cultists, then find and restore the Yamato, Dante gives Nero space to let him overcome his teen angst issues, but helps out when needed. Dante heavily implies they are family, but then immediately walks off into the sunset (probably to have a huge crisis)

Nero is a critical addition to twins story, however the overall story of the game is...not really interesting. Dante and Nero fight cultists, thats basically it. Other games or anime you can watch for the story, but in 4 the only standing out element is Nero. And he is an addition that was very needed, Nero is basically a happy ending at least one Sparda could have before DMC55 was a thing. 4 was quite an epilogue for the series, the thing I love about it is the hope it gives, which if wonderfully sung about in Shall Never Surrender. For all his trials, Dante always kept marching on, and after 4 he could have Nero at his side. Nero is the legacy of twins and he is the emboidiement of heart and hope of the series, and that is his greatest strenght. But, as I said, the crazy Fortunans plot is... not interesting, so I didn`t rank the game very high.

DMC2

Dante meets Lucia, battles demons with her, Lucia is revealed to be an artifisial demon, Dante goes on an expedition into Hell for a couple of years

I dont think this will be a surprise to anyone. The only interesting thing about 2 is Lucia, and while she is a nice character, she is not deep and not enough to carry an entire game by herself. Though I like her character and design, and wish she'd get back into DMC somehow. And the end where Dante kind of tricks Lucia into going to Hell alone is a nice detail.

As for other extended media, I am not very familiar with it. I read Before the Nightmare novel, but it didn't really do much for me (except Patty mention). I know people love Visions of V, but I cant say the same about myself. There were important bits about the twins childhood, some Eva, but otherwise surpsisingly little of Dante or the damaged relationship of the twins. Some panels were very nice though, and the imagery when Nero saved Vergil from Malphas got to me, as I never felt the impact of that moment in-game. But I also know that I have trouble feeling the same level of emotion, or even understanding whats going on in comics or manga, so this is just a me issue.

Too many to put down haha. These characters are perfect for the "enemies to lovers" trope. In canon they have such an antagonistic relationship on the surface but they have more in common than they realise and deep down they do care about each other.

What makes me happy about them

I love how different they are in complimentary ways. Jon is repressed and uptight so could learn a thing or two from Theon's "I do what I want" attitude but Theon is an irresponsible, insecure mess so he should really take a leaf out of Jon's book! They're not afraid to call each other out in ways I think are really beneficial for their development but they also understand better than most what the other is going through so there's a sense of mutual understanding there too.

What makes me sad about them

Well if we're talking about canon definitely the constant tragedy that plagues them both lol. I guess I'm also sad that they don't realise (yet?) in canon how similar they both are and how the things they hate about each other are actually rooted in familiar insecurities.

Things done in fanfic that annoy me

I hate when fanfic strips them of all their flaws (when that's literally what makes them so interesting!) to the point where they feel like totally different characters.

I also am not a fan of incest in fanfic and unfortunately it's pretty rampant in this fandom (for understandable reasons). I'm cool with other people shipping what they want but personally the moment incest comes up I usually stop reading.

Things I look for in fanfic

I am not someone who gravitate towards fluff or pre-established relationships. I love fiction which explores complex emotions and the messy reality of being a human being (especially one with a fuck ton of trauma and/or internal biases to work through)

Snowjoy isn't a particularly popular pairing (especially since the show ended) so I'll usually read any fic with them in lol. But my favourite tropes for them are slow burn, enemies to friends to lovers, fake dating and modern AU's.

I also love fics which explore or touch on mental illness, addiction, toxic masculinity, internalised homophobia and toxic friendships/relationships

Who I'd like them to end up with, if not each other

I truly do ship Theon with almost every character lmao. Theon/Robb, Theon/Jeyne, Theon/Patryk and Theon/Sansa are a few that come to mind. That said, in fic where he ends up with women I need him to have character development where he learns to respect women before I can root for them.

Jon I ship with fewer people but I can get on board with Jon/Satin, Jon/Ygritte and Jon/Sam.

In canon its hard to think of one that would make sense tbh.
