Now I'm curious WRT how 'Barbie' didn't hit for you.
I’ll say this first. If you liked the movie, I’m happy for you and I’m not here to tell you to hate the movie. I’m glad you enjoyed it and hope you continue to enjoy it.
That said… this movie was NOT for me and I did not enjoy its story at all. I loved the set design, costume design, the performances, the music, the dedication to creating the world, all that stuff was great.
The plot itself. It felt circular without actually purposefully dealing with the issues it tried to talk about.
The fact that Doctor Barbie, who is trans, is the one who is told to “go seduce Ken by telling him you feel don’t feel pretty” - as if this isn’t something that leads to violence toward trans women in the real world and also why her to be the one who doesn’t feel pretty? Wtf?
The Kens of Barbieland are basically all losers, are grossly incompetent compared to Barbie, treated poorly, and our main Ken (aka Beach Ken) has severe self worth issues… so naturally all the Kens become the villains and are able to overthrow all of Barbieland later on in the movie by doing …. they never explain how. Somehow a world full of, and built by, the most capable women ever are overthrown by like 20 dudes who they treated poorly and who aren’t very smart. Beach Ken’s root problems are only barely resolved and none of it feels meaningful.
Gloria and Sasha, the human characters who work with Barbie to fix Barbieland, are just as much caricatures and tropes as Barbie herself. Sasha, the daughter, is a mean Gen Z who just openly lashes out at Barbie (a stranger), and everyone else who is actually nice to her, for no reason. Gloria is “a sad mom who pretends to be happy” but they never explain why at all, it’s assumed that it’s because “she lives in a patriarchy”, but the only person who’s directly mean to her in the film is… her daughter.
Gloria gives a speech to each Barbie, individually, to snap them out of the Ken’s brainwashing (which like AGAIN how did that happen? It makes no sense at all and just confuses me) - the speeches are not empowering at all, they’re just about how women in the real world suffer a double standard on how to exist and SOMEHOW with all those depressing revelations thrown at them it… restores their self-confidence/self-worth and undoes the brainwashing?
Weird Barbie, whom everyone says is ugly and gross and they have violent “EW!!!” reactions to her face, is played by Kate FUCKING McKinnon. Meanwhile Stereotypical Barbie, while having an ugly cry breakdown about (again) not being pretty anymore, is played by Margot FUCKING Robbie. A fact that the movie points out as “the wrong casting choice to have this scene and cast Margot Robbie as Barbie saying she’s ugly.”
I heard so much about how it was a “queer positive movie” but there’s nothing queer about nor really in the movie. So it got to cling to the rainbow and scream “allyship” and everyone praised it for essentially doing nothing.
Everyone is like… mean? Everything feels so mean and mean spirited. It’s supposed to be very tongue in cheek, very snappy and quick, and everyone has a comeback for every situation but… it just really feels like everyone is just being mean for the sake of being mean and it makes moments where you’re supposed to feel sympathy for any character just drop immediately when they say the rudest shit ever for literally no reason.
They talk about Midge, aka the pregnant woman in the Barbie line, and then say “no don’t look at her anymore, she’s weird and creepy” … which AGAIN feels like that statement undercuts the point of women empowerment that the movie wants you to take away from watching the film?
It tries to balance jokes and seriousness in a way that undercuts the message of “society is kind fucked up and broken” that they’re trying to talk about. The “good guys” are also constantly mistreating other people, the “Barbieland bad guys” became bad by going to the real world and leaning “patriarchy”, the “Real world bad guys” literally do nothing except take up movie time for random gags and really don’t service the plot at all, and as much as it’s like “TAKE THAT MAJOR CORPORATION” at every turn… the movie was fully approved by Warner Bros Discovery AND Mattel… so it’s never actually going to say anything worthwhile about corporate greed and corruption without putting on kiddie gloves to do so.
The only person who I felt true sympathy for, understood their reasoning, and felt they deserved a happy ending was ALLAN, aka Ken’s Best Friend, who is treated equally like shit by basically everyone in the film. Allan points out that Barbieland and the Real World both kinda suck, how life is only just slightly more miserable there after the Ken’s took over, and how he just “wants to run away” and when given the chance does so, only to defend Sasha and Gloria from a bunch of Ken’s single handedly and telling them to “get out while they can”… and then is subsequently brought back to Barbieland by Sasha and Gloria to fix everything and… AGAIN none of this pays off because Allan’s purpose is dropped immediately when they get back to Barbieland. And Allan is played by MICHEAL CERA. I feel like I’m losing my mind at this point.
It feels like the movie wants to talk about the issues women face in all walks of life, but is never able to punch hard enough to make that message matter nor stick. It talks around gender issues, self worth issues, and problems in society without actually saying something real about them. The meanness of all the dialogue makes me really not care about pretty much anyone in the movie because… man I’m just so fucking tired of everything and everyone having to be “mean” in movies to prove a point.
The movie ends with a gynecologist appointment.
I dunno what to tell you. The plot is “not for me” and I didn’t really connect with anything.
The movie just made me sad and disconnected because of how much everyone praised it, saying it “made me proud to be a woman” or “it’s inventive, immaculately crafted and surprising mainstream films in recent memory - a testament to what can be achieved within even the deepest bowels of capitalism.”
And it didn’t feel like that for me at all.
Maybe it’s because of all the “that’s womanhood” talk throughout the movie. Because I’ve had so many women in power give me that speech after I came out as trans only to be abused directly by them in the same way that they said men abused them all while I was still ALSO being abused by the same men who abused them too. So like YIPPEE this fucking SUCKS and it was kinda trauma triggering!!
Maybe it’s because I’ve worked in the entertainment industry for 17+ years and know how stuff like this gets made and how many corporate approvals you need for it to make the “take THAT major corporations and CEOs!” jokes land like a dead fish on the floor. The people they are directly calling out said “yes, this level of joke at the expense of our richness and power is okay” and that’s the ONLY reason any of those moments are in the movie. So it doesn’t even really fucking matter, it’s all manufactured, it’s all there to make you feel like it’s doing something when the people with all the power just allowed it to happen. It’s not a “win” or a “heavy blow to their ego”, they literally don’t care.
So I DUNNO, this movie kinda just made me feel depressed and made me remember how badly I had been treated by people after coming out regardless of that person’s gender. The movie felt mean in a way that was too “on the nose” and real for me but then praised most of the characters for their mean actions or words.

I’ve been watching Barbie again, it’s been a day, and I’m gonna let myself get melancholy for a second.
Y’all remember Kate McKinnon’s ‘Weird Barbie’? Cause I fucking love and relate to her.
According to their Barbie lore, she was the most beautiful Barbie till a kid played too hard with her. Her hair was cut, burnt. Her face scratched and painted on. Her legs stretched to the extremes, till she’s almost always in the splits. As a result she was then ostracised from her community, from Barbieland. She lives alone in the mountain, she has no roles in the community, she barely comes down to town because as the Barbies said: you have to GO see weird Barbie, she doesn’t come over.
They call her ‘Weird Barbie’ both behind her back and also to her face. Stereotypical Barbie is derisive of her, she screams at the mere prospect of turning out like Weird Barbie. And then later on, she legit says “I’m just like you now, Ugly and Unwanted”, AT her. By literally all accounts she’s an outcast.
And you you what I fucking love about that? She doesn’t resent them. I’m fact, she doesn’t love them any less.
Much like how her being ‘Weird Barbie’ is common knowledge to the Barbies, It’s also common knowledge that when you’re malfunctioning or having trouble you go to Weird Barbie for help. They almost expect to receive it, which suggests she’s never actually turned anyone down from asking.
Then we see her interact with our Barbie, with Stereotypical Barbie and she’s no less loving. Margot arrives and she immediately welcomes her in, she listens to her problem. She’s kind and loving, uses affectionate terms (sidenote, she’s rekindled my love for the term BabyGirl), as well as actively using her knowledge and experience to help Margot full force. Also offers her the illusion of choice just to make the decision easier on Margot, more than once, to make the experience easier.
Even when Barbie screams in her face at the idea that they’d ever be the same or similar, she doesn’t get angry or defensive. She just frowns at the reality of others thoughts about her, but even takes the brunt of the blame from Margot “nah, I set myself up for that one”. Furthermore when they part, she tenderly holds Margot’s chin, wishing her luck, telling her “I Love You”.
She was worried, loved and believed in Barbie.
Then the Patriarchy happens and she doubles down. She goes full pink jumpsuit lesbian guerrilla warrior, she picks up Margot during her existential crisis and houses her, tries to help her, even if she couldn’t find an answer herself. Then America Ferrera, Sasha and Allen arrive and HOLY SHIT WE LEARN SO MUCH!
- She welcomes them in too, just as happy and without a hint of resentment or worry!
- She’s HOUSING THE DISCONTINUED TOYS! Sugar Daddy Ken! Magic Earring Ken! Skipper! Barbie Video Girl! Everyone else who’s been truly outcasted and practically exiled from Barbieland she jumped at the chance to house and protect!
- Even Nobel Prize winning Barbie she grabbed and tried everything she could to help her! To help all of them! The second the Patriarchy arrived she wasted no time to try and deprogram the Barbies and protect them from literal hell!
AND SHE DID! WITHOUT ANY EXPECTATION OF THANKS, OR APPRECIATION! She did so with the sole explicit hope of protecting a community of women she loved, irregardless of wether or not they loved her.
Ultimately she did get some of the desperately deserved attention she more than had earned, but she would’ve done it regardless. It leaves us with the character of a woman, who’s been hurt by extenuating circumstances way beyond her control (she was being played with), and who much like in real life, was excommunicated for the scars that said situation left. The movie doesn’t treat “being played with too hard” as trauma, but the parallel is there.
A woman who was hurt and scarred by her life experiences, which made her something different than what her society expected or accepted of her. She’s someone who’s learnt hard truths; Cellulite, nudity, pain, the patriarchy, etc. she is the wisest of them all in that sense, and who knows how much of that came from the trauma, or how much of that she learnt just to be able to help her community. Who knows how much she made her house, collected her knowledge, and built her maps and resources just to help other Barbies that might go through something similar, help them handle it better than she could.
I’m trying to verbalise it and it frustrates me that I can’t do it in a way that doesn’t feel circular but holy fudge nuggets is that both cool and heavy.
And while I can’t pretend I’ve suffered much, or been as blatantly and brutally treated as her, I do relate on some level. I’m in my early 20s (not gonna give specific age cause online) and I’ve always felt and been an outcast. Gay progressive atheist from a Christocatholic conservative Latin American country to start. Starting to build a life in my birth city and then moved at age 4. Everyone else’s families knew each other better, or longer.
Bullied ages 5 to 11. At the time it really didn’t register, and to some extent I still don’t let harassment get to me, but in reflection it was. Fuck I had to be sent on errands for the teacher once just so my entire class could get a talk on bullying and harassment and to not to. Guess who was the elephant in the room but not in the room. 7/8 year olds spill secrets easy. Then we moved again, 14k kilometres away.
Now it was a new continent, a new language. I spent 6 months in one school before moving to the next one, then another year and a half before changing programs from an English intensive program to just basic High School. Then Uni. And to add to all of that, while undiagnosed because it’s expensive, the odds I’m neurodivergent are a coin’s toss or better. And at every stage it’s felt like I’m just watching other people have friendships, through an invisible wall, trying hard to connect to them but somehow never managing.
I was the type of kid and am the type of person that’s very much touch starved, yet fucking terrified of initiating contact because if I do and it’s rejected, then It becomes clear I’m unwanted. So not doing so and keeping the mystery keeps up the hope. The type of person who sees and saw a birthday invitation as a gift in it of itself, specially if not everyone in the class was invited because then maybe I wasn’t a pity invite. Maybe then I was invited because I’m wanted, not because everyone’s invited and it would be rude to exclude me.
Yet who also is terrified of throwing a birthday party and hasn’t had one since I was 11 for a myriad of reasons: Maybe someone I thought was a friend isnt and they make it known then. Or maybe other people see the weirdo I am and leave. Or maybe because my family’s never exactly been well off, but most others were. And so I’d see other kid’s birthdays with balloons, custom cakes, party favours up the walls, games, etc. and yet who’s last birthday party consisted of a soccer ball, a grocery store cake, and bootleg video games (Latin America). And who now sees people my age throw parties in private hotel event rooms, with party buses, bar tabs in the 4 digits, tailor made cakes and special outfits for the day, while that alone would destroy my family financially. Doesn’t help that I managed to get into a Uni course packed with the loaded rich kids.
So there’s so much shame to everything, to being different, to being less, where there really shouldn’t be. So much fear of being seen, yet a desperate want to be held. And so much guilt to even make these feelings known to the people I care about because my emotional problems shouldn’t become theirs. My parents did and do that with me, but that’s a whole different rant. To the point I’m writing and posting this almost with the goal of screaming into the void where nobody can hear it, but with the hope maybe someone does.
And on the same note that I kind of relate to weird Barbie I also admire her. I admire her strength upon adversity, I admire her unconditional love to the other Barbies, and I admire how hard she tries to help everyone else. Another aspect I’m right now paralleling with my degree, hoping that maybe since I understand some of this pain, I can meet others with similar experiences and tell them all the things I wish someone told me. To give them all the things that I’m trying to give myself. That maybe if I am broken, I can make sure they’re not.
This post doesn’t really have a conclusion, just that Weird Barbie is fucking amazing and we all both need a Weird Barbie in our lives, but also remember that Weird Barbie has feelings too, and she deserves to be heard, deserves to be loved too.

“Barbie” (2023)
-a big budget, pop art, visually interesting film with a vibrant personality. I love it!
-also, easily the best use of Ryan Gosling since “Drive”
-I’m truly impressed with what Greta Gerwig got away with here.
+she crammed this with energy and made me hearty laugh the whole time
-the story is Barbie discovering sadness, the real world, clashing with the patriarchy, and just the wonderment of being a woman
-there’s a couple small details I want to highlight before the big stuff
-Kate McKinnon’s look is almost certainly inspired by the awesome cult film “Liquid Sky”, another tone poem of a film
-the small, tender scene of Barbie telling the old woman (at the bus stop) she’s beautiful, and said woman saying “I know” with a vicious smirk is magical
+it says just as much as the soon to be famous “being a woman is impossible” monologue in its own beautiful warmth
-the opening riff on “2001: A Space Odyssey” is the film personified; irreverent, playing with greatness, funny, colorful, and just a blast
-(after a man notes he is not part of the board) “I’m a guy with no power...does that make me a woman?
-I like how there are two matrix tributes; picking between two choices/shoes (original) and the at first mysterious Ruth being the Oracle (“Reloaded”)
-“after I found out the patriarchy didn’t include horses, I honestly lost interest”
-alright then, onto the big pillars
-here is a film saying, with all earnestness and actual thought, that we should approach our hearts with collectivism, bond over our shared yearns and desires and messiness
-(only a scold could say this film excludes love, a scold who didn’t actually watch the film and just wants any kind of attention)
-Margot Robbie nails every bit, from first thinking about dying, to discovering tears, to making Barbie’s naïveté to growth a journey of substance
-this film is unapologetic about being feminist (which shocked the fuck out of me) and does so with actual insight, not checking off a list (which is rad)
-note too, cause grumps will try to bury this, it asks men to not define themselves by conquering others, or stepping on necks, but by creating worth on their own goals and just being present in the moment. It asks them to free themselves from their own shackles
-there is a certain richness to male characters when female directors (and writers, etc) take over; new colors are displayed in the rainbow
-it is so immensely satisfying to see actual sets (practical, on camera) and vivid primary colors (after years of blurred muted-ness)
+its value in the aesthetic form and character of the film is immeasurable
-there isn’t a single false note in the “impossible to be a woman” speech, aptly delivered by America Ferrara. It simply presents itself with the courage of its convictions
-said being truly sucks and absolutely rules; the sheer inconsistency is its beauty and power. Neatness does not contain growth
-I like how the film emphasizes the under seen will truly change and save the world
-oh, I almost forgot to mention; I just about rolled out of my chair at the ribbing of zealots for the Synder cut of Justice League
-this is an artificiality to this film that is staggeringly authentic
-this is truly one of the best examples of just being the world and subverting the world in the 2020’s (and frankly all time); this will be studied and admired for years
-also also, the battle at the beach and the dance street fight among Ken’s is an all timer of a scene (it uses the past to power the present)
-I have a sneaking suspicion this may be the “Iron Man”(2008) to the upcoming Mattel cinematic universe; the vast number of following films will largely be less interesting, less full of the personality of its creators (with some exceptions)
-but this film is worth it; it is alive and joyful. It cannot be accountable for the world(s) that comes after it, only how it exists during its run time.
-and, truly, Gerwig has made something special here. It’s just going to make the lives of everyone who accepts it for what it is (love and color of form) many times better. It is a triumph

sending as anon, and you may be tired of talking about it but love how queerness, especially genderqueerness is only ever used as a punchline in the barbie movie rather than as anything that might yknow, contribute to a feminist message.
be it the gay men ogling ken, or singling out Kate McKinnon as the weird barbie (for looking the most dyke-y (but we need to make sure she also says the only overt heterosexual thing in the entire movie so that people know she's not gay!!!)), or Hari Nef being set-dressing at best, and being a subtle transmisogynistic caricature at worst, or the aforementioned haha penis and bagina stuff. it just feels like a "feminist" movie that is entirely averse to discussing queerness in any way shape or form.
i don't know how anybody is actually gunning for it to win any awards outside of set design lol
You know what this film feels like to me in the way it approaches feminism and queerness? It feels like 2013 feminism. Except it's 2023 and there's so much more progress made, I don't see any excuse for the surface-level "women! amirite!" and "women jajana and men snepis. #tuth!". It's kind of malicious.
Also in your list of stereotypes, I also want to raise Allan. I really liked the concept of the character on the paper, but what they did with him is a really pathetic in a way, just like how you talk about Hari Nef's role, is kind of homophobic at worst (HAHAHA look guys he is an EMASCULATED MAN next to the Kens he has to hang out with the Barbies like a LOSER).
I really wanted to give this film a chance but my worries started when Barbie said "HE DOESNT HAVE A PENIS AND I DONT HAVE A VAGINA" (how does she know that? Isn't she supposed to be naive about the real world??) and confirmed on the very last "JOKE" of the film. What a fucking mess.

Aww, I knew I celebrated a previous. birthday at a Ren Faire with a bunch of friends, all of us dressed as pirates. Forgot it was my milestone 30th. I rang in my 30s as a pirate & I'll be ringing out the end of my 30s as a pirate as well, cuz I am going to the Royal Feast this summer as a 39th bday treat! Hopefully this time goes smoother, because that was also the same trip where I got pulled over by a state trooper doing 72mph in a 55mph zone (I thought it was 65mph speed limit) and his first question to the car full of gals fully decked out in pirate looks was "you going to the ren faire?" Instead of saying NO for lolz, I said "um, yeah..." like a COWARD. As a "happy birthday" he didn't write me a speeding ticket but still wrote a ticket for my license plate frame because "you'd never get pulled over just for this, but it's technically illegal to have *anything* covering any part of your plate". The ticket was still ~$350 (thanks NYS surcharge). Anyways I got to feed a duck, ride a camel, and spend the day with some of the best people, so it was all worth it and I look forward to a repeat (on a slightly smaller scale, because I am le tired) for my 39th!

And while I’m at it! Putting this energy out there: #RenewOurFlagMeansDeath and cast Kate McKinnon as either Anne Bonny or Mary Read. They already gave us an in with Calico Jack whining he's been mutinied against 3 times recently and they ran with him historically. He’s also already out of the way so there’s no wasted time/boring love triangle drama and we can just have happy badass lesbian pirates co-captaining their own ship.

My #1 post of 2022
Re-posting this from my own Twitter thread: Oh shit! #OurFlagMeansDeath S2 prediction:  Ed is gonna shoot Stede when they meet again. It’ll be dramatic, Ed’ll cry thinking he killed him, etc.  But the half of the fucking petrified orange Stede's daughter gave him will stop the bullet & save him #RenewOurFlagMeansDeath Or Izzy will shoot Stede, but I think Ed would be more dramatic for the story/reunion and needing to really knock him HARD out of The Kraken.  Ed knows Stede knows how to take a stab, or maybe their sword fight will be a draw or with Stede thinking he won and Ed pulls the gun. Ed never used the gun in the show. Only threatened Stede (and started to load it at the party) OH GOD! Actually, Stede will probs just refuse a sword fight. Ed will want one & Stede will refuse & Ed will threaten with the gun (again). Will the shot be intentional or accidental? (Does it matter?) Stede should never have left but the clean break/forgiveness from his family is what will save his life in the end. After also setting him free to love with no doubts or guilts from his old life haunting him. Knowing he's not a curse or a monster.

how would you rank the ghostbusters movies?
Oh man this is really hard! I love them all for their own reasons but I think in terms of objective quality (as objective as i can be) from best to worst I'd rank them
Ghostbusters (1984)
Ghostbusters Afterlife (2021)
Ghostbusters (2016)
Ghostbusters 2 (1989)
But again I love them all so very much in their own ways. The original film is for sure a classic and a staple of 80s pop culture. Ghostbusters 2 in retrospect is very much like a last hurrah for the guys as it's the last time all four of them would be on screen together. The 2009 video game had them all reprise their roles, but Bill Murray recorded his lines in a separate studio due to a falling out between him and Harold Ramis. (Ok "falling out" is a bit of an understatement but I don't have time to get into it rn fhdjhdjdhd)
Ghostbusters 2016 is a good movie y'all are just mean. No but actually it's pretty good! Yes it has its flaws and the jokes don't always land, but I think the hate it gets is extremely overblown. It came out during a big antifeminist movement that spawned from Gamergate and sadly I think the timing really did the movie a disservice. But separated from that, I think it's a nice extension to the Ghostbusters multiverse (yes it is a multiverse). The characters are fun, it tries new things, and while there are a few forced references to the original movie, I think there are plenty of subtle nods to the other movies and even the video game that tell me the people working on this movie cared a lot about Ghostbusters. Also Kate McKinnon is a joy and a delight.
Ghostbusters Afterlife is truly a love letter to the series though and I think an excellent tribute to Harold Ramis. The dedication to capturing the spirit (pun not intended) of the original movie and bringing the series back is just so charming and heartfelt. I highly recommend watching Adam Savage's series on YouTube touring the set of Afterlife as he goes through the set design, costumes, props, and practical effects for the film.
I don't think any of these films are bad, but I put Ghostbusters 2 at the bottom just because it's really toned down from the original. I wish it kept those darker themes since y'know it's a movie series about dealing with ghosts like pest control. Kind of a morbidly humorous idea that the sequel almost completely abandons. Except that one scene in the subway tunnel. What the fuck was up with that.

Tim Scott and Mike Pence want this solved on a Federal level. Nikki Haley says they won’t have the votes. She is right. She seems to be the only one that claims climate change is real. Haley and Ramaswamy have already promised to pardon Trump. I won’t be surprised when they all come to blows. The crowd seemed poised not to listen to anything they had to think about. Trump supporters don’t seem to care how outrageous he is (whether he is there or not) and he does not care how outrageous they are. I loved Barbieland it was so gorgeous and colorful I didn’t really love the scenes in the real world America Ferrera did a fantastic job but they fell flat to me. Ryan Gosling was the perfect Ken and this is my favorite performance of his next to The Nice Guys Margot Robbie was really great and she gave Barbie a lot of depth my one complaint is that I wish they gave the other Barbies more screen time
AGREED. Barbieland was fucking perfect. Okay we are so on the same wavelength, I expressed some similar feelings in my last answers (in a less succinct way, lol). Too much at Mattel HQ for my liking and while the scenes with America (though she did a great job!) and the Barbie creator in particular and stuff were cool they just were too long and did not do it for me. (Meanwhile they're my sister's fave lol. All a matter of taste.) That's where the melodrama set in. But I agree holy shit, I really think Ryan and Margot are some of the best movie stars we have today. They were absolutely perfect in their roles. And YES. It made me want to rewatch The Nice Guys once again!! It's definitely amongst my favorites of his, I also enjoy him a lot in some of his earlier indie work like Half Nelson and then I'm a sucker for Blade Runner 2049 and La La Land. He's so good at comedy my god. (Love his dramas too just... an ActOr!) And finally, agreed. We really didn't get to know the other Barbies which is a shame. It was the Ken and Barbie and America Ferreira show. I'm glad we got a lot of Kate McKinnon though but she was easily the other Barbie with the most screentime. Oh well.

Barbie (2023)
This movie has made like half a billion dollars in its first week so odds are good that you've seen it, but in case you haven’t seen it, let’s get the plot synopsis out of the way (SPOILERS):
Margot Robbie plays Stereotypical Barbie, the tall blonde pretty skinny Barbie in a world of other Barbies who are slightly different (most notably Weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon)). Ryan Gosling plays Ken, surrounded by a few other Kens led by Simu Liu, and Allan (Michael Cera), a perpetually uncomfortable friend of Ken’s who seems to love the man deeply while also being very annoyed by him much of the time (don’t say Greta Gerwig knows nothing about male friendships).
During a girls’ night dance party, Stereotypical Barbie starts to have some unexpected and unprecedented thoughts about death, and wakes up the next morning to find that nothing in her home in Barbie Land is working the way it should. She seeks counsel from Weird Barbie, who tells her that she needs to go to the real world and find the girl her doll avatar belongs to and get her to stop thinking about stuff. That’s Gloria (America Ferrera), a somewhat timid woman with a murky career at Mattel and a caustic teenage daughter named Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt). So Barbie sets out to find Gloria, while Ken tags along and discovers the wonders of patriarchy. After a lot of zaniness, confusion, and pictures of horses, Stereotypical Barbie exiles herself from Barbie Land and joins forces with Gloria and Sasha to visit a gynecologist.
I debated with myself for a little while whether to try to approach this movie, because although I really enjoyed it, it’s very obviously not made for me and there’s no way I can understand it in the way someone who grew up playing with Barbie can understand it. It’s a story about what it means to grow out of the childish fantasies represented by Barbie and all of her friends and professions, and begin to confront the reality that there is no valid culturally approved femininity (or masculinity) to grow into anymore, which is a difficult situation that the Barbie concept simultaneously encourages, laments, ignores, and helped to create. I can speak to Ken’s bullshit here, but to some extent the interplay between Stereotypical Barbie, Gloria, Sasha, the CEO of Mattel (Will Ferrell), Ruth Handler (Rhea Perlman), and the world at large is unknowable to me because they are based on experiences and fantasies I’ve never had, stories about myself I’ve never been told. But in the end I decided I wanted to try, because the discourse around this thing has become so muddy and stupid it’s threatening to overtake the merit of the film itself, which is a real shame.
Obviously there is nothing to the right-wing idea that the movie is too feminist or anti-man, and those criticisms can be dismissed without a second thought. Right-wing commentators like to pretend that they’ve never actually met a man in real life, but the rest of us have, and we know that most men would, if given the opportunity, be absolutely thrilled to take up residence in a big stupid mansion and call it the Mojo Dojo Casa House. Every cis-het man wants to wear obnoxious clothes, sing songs with his friends, and cry. Not up for debate, sorry. As for the too-feminist angle, the primary goal of the women in this story seems to be to feel like they’re not doing everything wrong every minute of every day. If you oppose that, get fucked!
I’ve also seen a lot of pretzel-knot-logic thinkpieces and social media posts deliberating with excruciating self-consciousness whether Barbie is feminist enough, whether it’s too capitalist, whether it really understands itself. This is third-wave feminism masquerading as something modern in a time when even fourth-wave feminism is sunsetting. All of these concerns come second, and a distant second at that, to whether it’s a fun, clever movie that you can have a good time watching with your friends and helps you feel good about yourself. We don’t have time anymore for tedious, labored games of “Should I Be Enjoying This?”
More about that: Greta Gerwig’s real triumph here is not that she managed to get Mattel to produce a movie that’s openly critical of its product (while also selling it), or that she created something that can be easily imagined to be infuriating to bigots, or even just that she made a lot of money for a lot of people; it’s that she managed to use a plastic fantasy land to make an engaging movie about the lived experiences of multiple generations of American women where everyone is kind of stupid and cringe in equal measure, but each character comes out looking like some kind of hero if you think about them for long enough. That’s the triumph because that’s real life.
There’s an effort here to release us from the prison of constantly asking ourselves whether we are feminist enough, or too capitalist, or if we understand ourselves, by more or less taking the position that to an extent these questions are nonsensical to ask about your personal experience as someone who is growing and developing in a world that you didn’t create and can’t control. I’m sure there are plenty of Mattel products floating in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. You probably also played with a Weird Barbie when you were a kid. These things aren’t really spiritually related, and shouldn’t be. When Gloria, someone who lives an unremarkable life but spends her free time drawing pictures of Crippling Shame Barbie, delivers her tired (though still not wrong) speech about the contradictory expectations put on women in American society and then gets brutally shot down trying to pitch an “Ordinary Barbie” to the Mattel CEO, that’s not supposed to be the moment that ties the whole film’s message together; that’s a woman who has yet to learn that there can be no ordinary Barbie because there are no ordinary women. She is still growing, as is her daughter, as is Barbie, as are we all, and all this bone-headed discussion about whether Greta Gerwig has accomplished these granular yet amorphous feminist-labeled goals only serves to suppress that realistic and compassionate ideal in favor of yet another set of impossible-to-meet standards.
That said, I want to bring this back to Barbie visiting her gynecologist for the first time. Gerwig herself has said in interviews that her own memories of feeling ashamed of her body inspired her to include that scene, because she wanted girls in the audience to see Barbie happily taking care of herself and know that it wasn’t something that needed to be hidden. It also seems to be an important line in that much is made earlier in the movie of Barbie having no vagina (in one scene she says plainly to a group of wolf-whistling construction workers, “You should know that I don’t have a vagina.”), but here she is confirming that not only does she have one now that she’s transitioned to the real world, she has a human one that needs maintenance. She is real now. She is herself, whatever that might be. And as intent as some seem to be on robbing this movie of its authenticity, the singular characteristic of Gerwig’s Barbie that shines through is that for all of its silliness, it’s a genuine film with genuine heart, and that’s what it wants for its audience. Be genuine people, or do the best you can. Forget the rest.
P.S. I know I’m ignoring Ken’s storyline, which is a huge part of the movie. Suffice to say that Ken’s self-worth is completely tied up in getting a woman’s attention, and when that doesn’t work he tries to heal his wounds by fully investing in patriarchy, which also doesn’t work. So then he has to try getting a life. Tale as old as time.

the barbie movie was amazing
margot robbie is so talented in addition to being drop dead gorgeous and the costumes were incroyable and ryan gosling was so funny and i loved how barbie is so very asexual and cares so much about empowering women and being able to live a life of her own direction despite having doubts about her ability to "be" something but realizing that there's so much beauty and value in choosing and that sasha (i think her name is sasha) is a cool little punk who's skeptical and critical of the current situation but not jaded and is actively wanting to fight and change life for others and that ken just wanted to be loved and appreciated but also hated doing the performative things that got him what he thought he wanted. and ugggh kate mckinnon lesbian barbie being liberated from the patriarchy by having a lived a life already outside the norms and being the weirdo. like the movie was so lighthearted and gorgeous and funny without being demonizing to men (though the mojo dojo casas' excessive tv placement was such a fucking read on dudes) and so wonderful in trying to show that gender essentialism harms everyone and that community is needed to fight harmful ideology. ugggh perfect movie.
and we went a fancy theatre with big big recliner seats and had fantastic snacks and the charli song actually really ate and i 100% called that she'd be on the soundtrack.
and there weren't cheap shots about gay people, which is so often used to emasculate men and gah this movie is so important
and the fact it was so anticapitalist and despite the opportunity to make bank on toys and clothing etc, none of that shit is being pushed. greta gerwig, i owe you my lifeeeeeee.

Pt. 2 - Ok but anyways, Celeste Yim is like my absolute favorite writer, I think so much of what they do is brilliant. Bowen Yang might be my favorite cast member ever, he’s got such a spark that feels kind of… glamorous? Also this might sound wishy washy but it does feel awesome watching 10 years later and seeing how much progress has been made in terms of diversity. Obviously there can always be progress made but seriously, we used to have Nasim Pedrad and Fred Armisen playing every POC under the sun and the nuance just wasn’t there. Now there not only are there are multiple POC and LGBTQ members on the cast but the writing staff is more diverse and imo that really shows. There are sketches that you can tell are queer or tapped into a specific culture (I’m Latina myself was just dyingggg over Pedro pascal’s protective mother sketch and the Spanish class sketch with Ana de armas and Karol G. May have claimed Marcello as my son, nbd lol). And Molly Kearney playing men and women characters in different sketches is so fucking rad.
Chloe Fineman reminds me of Abbey Elliott if Abbey Elliott took risks and I appreciate that even though she gets featured a lot play she can play the straight man really well so it doesn’t feel too over saturated (I think they made this mistake with Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon during their respective heydays).
I’m lowkey fascinated with PDD as writers vs performers (and as people in general tbh but that’s a whole other ball of wax lol). I think they write GREAT sketches and I also LOVE their digital shorts but I think both should be kept separate… I hope they don’t become cast members. I don’t think combining the two would work.
It’s also so funny to me to see who people fangirl over. I think Andrew Dismukes is super funny and I love his writing (Toyota dealership ruled) but I am lowkey shocked he has such a following lol. And I totally agree with you, Michael Longfellow needs to be an update host. He’s got fucking awesome deadpan delivery and a subtle sardonic mischievousness to him that combined with those good looks I could see him becoming a new niche heartthrob.
I completely agree with you on Chloe and PDD. I absolutely love the rookies, especially Michael and Marcello have been standouts for me. I’m LOVING Ego, Sarah and JAJ this season + Rosebud Baker as a writer. I’ve always loved Celeste and Bowen, like Celeste is such a solid writer and Bowen as a performer shines every sketch he’s in but I’m not really into their sketches this season. I usually like the stuff that are coming from this pairing but honestly not so much in s48.
The thing about Andrew, we love him so much because he’s like TLI, Tim Robinson, Kyle Mooney and Will Forte combined in one person. Completely unhinged. He has a writer’s brain and type of sense of humor that no one really has (which is I think why he can’t vibe with current writers). This season should’ve been his breakout season… and yet… remains incredibly underrated.

I’m back, again? For like the 4th time?
Tumblr media
Hello, so I disappeared again for more than half a year. Sorry about that. But as usual life happened. I am currently living in France, finishing up my semester of Erasmus exchange (that sounds like it could be a good post) and I have been struggling with my mental health for like the past year, so that’s fun. I have like zero time for my tumblr, but I feel like it could actually help me feel better! Cause I love making posts and I love talking to you guys!
I would also officially like to thank you all for still following me even though I post three posts every six months.
But I’ll try to stay active this time!
I thought maybe we could do a little Q&A? You all probably forgot that I exist, cause I don’t post, but, if you have some questions you’d like to ask me anyway (about Erasmus, languages, maybe even my personal life... if it’s not too personal), you can send them into my inbox and I’m gonna try and respond.
Thank you all so much for sticking around!
Hope you are doing well today, and if you are not, that’s okay too <3

Prompt number: 18 “you don’t see it?”
Fandom: Saturday night live? Pete Davidson?
Paring: Pete Davidson x reader
Rating: T
Word count: 1.6k
Warnings: An asshole cheater. Mentions of Ariana Grande (yes that’s a warning- don’t come for me). Swearing. Mentions of slight sexting- just mentions boobs nothing graphic. Mentions rehab. Slightly angsty ends fluffy.
A/N: So I broke my one rule and wrote for an actual person. Pete Davidson is precious and doesn’t deserve the hate he gets. I was also almost hella basic because I was so close to titling this the king of Staten Island. Anywho, the cheating scum part of this story happened to me and I immediately thought Pete would never do this to me- so I wrote this lmao. I think my love for the Knicks seeped into this story a bit.
Tumblr media
You had been talking to a guy for close to three months now. You thought he was charming, and sweet, and he was built like a god! You’re friends were a little weary, none more than Pete, when you admitted you hadn’t met up with the man yet. Their faces would go from being happy for you to pitting you instantly. But you knew you weren’t being catfished, you video called with Henry multiple times a week. While Henry wasn’t your first choice, he never would be, you were starting to see a future with him.
But that vision went to shit with one simple text. You had gotten a new bra, maroon and lacy, and boy did it make the girls look good! Feeling a little flirty in your new bra, you texted a picture to Henry to be a little tease while he was at work. Almost instantly you got a text back, and it read; ‘shit baby, you’re tits are way better than my girlfriends!’ with multiple heart eye and drooling emojis to follow.
You had never felt more embarrassed in your life! And that’s saying something considering Pete makes jokes about you on SNL and in his standup routines, all approved by you beforehand of course. You had met Pete years ago, while he was scrawnier than he is now, had a lot less tattoos, and right when he was just starting SNL. You had bumped into him on the sidewalk while trying to catch a cab in the pouring rain, you expected to be yelled at with a thick New York accent for what felt like the millionth time that day, but it never came. Instead Pete hailed the cab for you but not before exchanging numbers and promising to show you around since you had just moved to the city for college.
After showing you around the next day, you were surprised when he continued to text you for the next month. To pay him back for his generosity you took him to see a Knicks game, lucky for you your dormmate had a fight with her boyfriend so she sold the tickets to you for dirt cheap. The seats weren’t great, all the way up in the nosebleed section, but you were in Madison Square Garden watching the Knicks! Pete was pleasantly surprised by you when you could name the players and you actually knew how the game was played, unlike girls he had dated. Of course before you left the arena you had to splurge and got yourself a Carmelo Anthony jersey!
Many years and Knicks games later you’re still friends with Pete. You’d call him your best friend, but you know Colson is his even if he claims it’s you when you’ve asked in the past. You’d be by Pete’s side every time he admitted himself into rehab- making sure you were there to pick him up when he got out. You had been there to pick up the pieces after Ariana- hell you were picking them up when they were still together. You were beside him every time he got bullied off his social media by stupid haters or little Ariana stans after they broke up. He made sure to be at your graduation, and he was there to rant to when you had a bad day at work. Pete was there to hold your hand when you got your first tattoo, which he wanted to pick out for you but you refused. Pete was there to pick up your pieces when a guy hurt you, like right now.
You’re in his basement, curled into his right side, his right arm slung securely over your shoulder, his fingertips making soothing trails up and down your arm. You had convinced him to watch an old episode of SNL- before he was on it, but new enough that Kate McKinnon and Bill Hader were on it together. You snuggle further into his warm side and let out a content sigh.
“You were too good for him, (Y/N/N),” Pete finally brings up the elephant in the room. You had hoped that watching an episode of SNL would put the ‘you deserve better than him, he’s just scum,’ talk Pete gives you every time you go through a break up.
“If I was too good for him, then I’d still be with him,” you murmur a line from the movie clueless into his baby pink sweatshirt covered chest.
“None of these guys deserved you, (Y/N/N),” Pete says sternly, you roll your eyes not in the mood for him to tell you how amazing you are but not make a move on you, yet again.
“Pete, stop,” you pull away from his chest, his arm falling off you as you scoot to the front of the cushion. “I really don’t want to have this conversation again, no matter how many times you tell me I still won’t believe you. I should get going, don’t want to miss the last ferry back to the city.”
“(Y/N), please, wait,” Pete’s skinny fingers wrap around your wrist as you stand and go to walk towards the door. “We just ordered pizza, just stay the night.”
“I can’t Pete,” you whisper, staring down at your sock covered feet, you had gotten Pete to take better care of his hardwood floors by convincing him to have a no shoe policy. “Give some pizza to your mom and your sister.”
“You’re off tomorrow, you originally planned on staying,” if you didn’t know any better you’d say his voice was laced with hurt and disappointment. “Why won’t you stay now?”
“I can’t keep doing this Pete,” loud laughing coming from the studio audience on the now forgotten episode of SNL only seems to be mocking you and your feelings. “Every time you tell me how amazing I am and you don’t- it’s just hard to believe when no one seems to agree with the sentiment.”
“You don’t see it?” his voice is soft, he stands from his seat, getting momentarily stuck in the blanket that was draped over your laps. “You really don’t see it,” this time it’s not a question, it’s a statement.
“See what Pete?” he lets go of your wrist to spin you around to face him.
“That I’m in love with you,” his eyes shine in sincerity, but they aren’t what you’re focusing on. “That I have been since that first Knicks game!”
“You don’t love me,” your voice shakes as you stare at the heart that was once Ariana’s bunny ears peaking out above his left ear. You reach up and gently trace your finger over the heart. “You’ve dated models, and movie stars. You were engaged to Ariana, even after you knew she didn’t want us to be friends. Because she didn’t trust me. You didn’t love me Pete, you chose her, and yet I was still there to pick up the pieces after you ignored me for months, because I love you. Because I didn’t care how much I was hurting, I knew I had to be there to make you feel better, to be able to see your smile again.”
“I was settling for Ariana!” he grabs your cheeks so you can’t look away. “I thought I could get her to warm up to you, I’ve never wanted you out of my life (Y/N)! You were with Eric at the time, it hurt like hell to see you that happy with someone that wasn’t me! So I proposed to Ariana because Eric bragged that he had a ring for you! But then you guys broke up and I couldn’t just break up with her right after I proposed.”
“Eric did propose, I said no and broke it off,” you smile sadly. “He, like Ariana, didn’t want us to spend time together, so I dumped him. All of the guys eventually realize they’re second to you, so they either break up with me or ask me not to see you anymore. And I was selfish every single time, I hurt them so I could be happy with you in my life.”
“Fine, you want the truth?” Pete asks, and you nod. “It wasn’t the Knicks game. I knew I wanted to date you that night. But the first time I knew I loved you was when you came with my mom to pick me up from rehab the first time after we were. You didn’t run far away from me, you still wanted to be around me and you put up with my shit. Everyone leaves when I go to rehab, they think I’m too much to handle.”
“Well I don’t! I never have Pete!” you’re crying by now.
“I know! Fuck, you’re too damn perfect for me (Y/N). I convinced myself for so long you were too good for me, that you couldn’t love me,” you don’t know how to verbally respond, so you do the first thing that comes to your mind.
You grab the back of Pete’s neck and pull him into a kiss, it’s all teeth and tongue. The passion sends jolts of electricity through your body, a wave of giddiness rolls over you as you realize that this is really happening. You’re really kissing Pete, he really loves you too. As the kiss continues it becomes slower and more gentle, both of you want this feeling to last as long as it can. When you finally pull back, lungs burning and desperately in need of air, the feeling of his lips linger on yours.
“I do love you, (Y/N/N). There’s never really been anyone else,” he caresses your cheek and gently brushes his lips on your forehead.
“I love you too Pete,” you lean in for a peck, which he quickly deepens. You pull away giggling, “so much.”

GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES: Top five sad songs?
FROM UP ON POPPY HILL: Tell me about an experience that changed your life or your worldview.
MARY AND THE WITCH’S FLOWER: What is the last movie you watched? What are your thoughts on it?
PRINCESS MONONOKE: What elemental sign are you? (fire, earth, air & water) - you can tell me your actual sign and what you think you are because that also counts @_@
<3
ooooh these are gooooodddd ones.
1. Oh! Just five? Ummmmm...A Bridge Over Troubled Water is the song, when i was in a toxic work situation, that i would play on loop during my 45 minute commute and cry hysterically to. The Parting Glass is legally required to be played at every Irish American's funeral. Danny Boy is...Danny Boy. My mom and I like to sit and sing together and this is always the last one. Please Take Me Home by the Bird and the Bee is very cathartic (that whole album actually). Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas straight up makes me BAWL every time I hear it. Because SOMETIMES THE FATES DON'T ALLOW. Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen--the Kate McKinnon version from Saturday Night Live was what got me through the Trump presidency. Is that five? More than five? Who cares.
2. Oh--lots of things. What springs to mind is being fifteen. And I heard the Bishop Tom Shaw preach about forgiveness. I still tear up a little when I think about him and the story he told. Especially because we didn't know it at the time but he had just been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and died shortly afterwards. That's the only change that has every been super immediate and not a process. Like I walked into that room as Person A and left as Person B.
3. Omg--I haven't watched many movies lately. Probably Coen Brothers' Tragedy of Macbeth. I am notoriously the only person in the world who really doesn't like the 2015 Fassebender Macbeth. ANYWAY this HEALED me. I thought the performances were excellent, the Witch(es) especially--extreme clarity of language, text-based directing choices (*side eyes 2015 Lady M sleepwalking scene*), quite traditional because we don't really need to dress up Shakespeare, actually. You could tell all the thanes APART. I thought the German Expressionist set design and lighting was AMAZING. I thought the role of Ross was a little uneven...but I like that they tried to do something different with the character. The more Shakespeare I see, the more I like interpretations that lean into the inherent theatricality of the plays. And that artificiality allows for the melodrama, for the over-the-top-ness that ultimately leads to emotional truth. Tied for first film adaptation with Patrick Stewart's 2011 (?) Macbeth.
4. Okay, I googled this because i didn't know what it meant. So apparently I'm earth so google says:
On a good day: Earth signs are grounded, loyal, and good at accumulating wealth. They tend to appreciate the finer things in life, such as good food and wine. They are sensual creatures. Earth signs are patient and practical.
On a bad day: Just as Earth signs can be loyal, they can also be stubborn and inflexible. It's often their way or the highway. Their love for material things can make them overly decadent and at times they can be lazy.
How to win them over: Give them food and wine. (OKAY THIS IS TRUE)
But I think I'm really more like water:
Theirs is the element of emotions. Water signs feel everything and can make wonderful artists because they are highly imaginative. They are very loyal and compassionate.
On a bad day: The sensitivity of water signs can make Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces easily hurt and they may take things too personally. They can also be moody and highly suspicious.
How to win them over: Tell them your darkest secret. (isn't this how we became friends?)
fuck this got long. sorry. WHAT ABOUT YOU?
