I'm kinda on two minds about this post, cause while I agree, I feel like it missed 2 points.
1. The main reason the redemption arcs worked as well as they did is because neither was actually evil. One is what happens when a child gets given endless power and knowledge, thus failing to grasp consequence. The other was someone holding a very justified grievance past it's expiration date. Neither of them was a terrible person, just kinda a dick either some times or all the time.
2. It also forgot to mention the best variation of this, and an episode about redemption which was Quick Whip's. Where the biggest lesson was to not discount a criminal and highlight the fact said behaviour is rarely a life goal. More a means to an end and usually born of desperation. How societal negativism perpetuates the problem by decreasing the chances of those that might need them most, and that if society created a program to actually rehabilitate petty thieves and petty criminals and helped them move on from that desperate past.
It particularly works because Lunela isn't trying to prosletyse to the criminals she meets, and the episode doesn't treat redemption as a given for anybody. Lu takes her time to trust Quick Whip, from not letting her out of her cuffs, to not giving her her bubble blaster, to actively trusting her and depending on her mid fight. It was a process of growing mutual honesty and dependability (and one that went both ways as QW was surprised when Lu acted like she was gonna turn her in. She also trusted Lu, believed she'd take a chance on her and that's why it hit).
Furthermore, there's a reason the entirety of Lady Bullseye and her kindergarten class showed up; they're people who're downright evil, choosing to be, and choosing to remain that way. QW asked for a chance, they didnt. QW wanted to prove they could be better, to leave the crime world, they didn't. And that's why QW got offered the second chances and olive branches, while they got carted into the nearest holding vehicle. It shows that the path to redemption is one that only the subject can start, that it's not Lu's or anyone else's responsibility to start someone else's positive change, but that they can help along the way and should be open to helping when they can, instead of defaulting to biases.
Not my proudest thesis, last minute, but yeah. MG&DD does understand redemption arcs well... enough. Better than most series do.
One thing that Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur does better so far than other animated series is redemption arcs.
I already mentioned this in my post about Molecular Man that in this series antagonists who get these arcs have motivations that are reasonable or make sense for their characters.
And when they realize their mistakes they apologize and try to make up for it or be better.
We see this when Beyonder appears in Wish-Tar and grants Lunella wishes to show that he is trying to be better.
Molecular Man when he uses his powers to fix the damage he caused in Lunella's home before he leaves to his planet.
I think that these are two aspects that make these redemption arcs have a more solid execution than other series that do it.

It’s my opinion that like if a white supremacist/Nazi is going to be reformed. They need to do so willingly. The only times I’ve heard of successful rehabilitation of fascists is when they made the conscious decision to no longer be one anymore and seek atonement. People who try to like hug and change fascists that don’t want to change are fucking morons

Hi, I hope you don’t mind me adding a few things.
Disclosure, not a professional, at least not yet.
I the reason why some therapists view porn as a way to abate dark urges is because they view it as a variation on the psychological defence of Sublimation; one of the 4 Defences considered “Mature”.
(They’re remembered via SASH: Suppression, Altruism, Sublimation and Humour). You’ve touched on the last of those Lily, calling self deprecation self harm, which is correct. They’re only called “mature” coping mechanisms because they’re conscious and voluntary, but that still doesn’t make them perfectly healthy.
The key with it is that these are still coping mechanism, they — alongside the body — aren’t designed to keep doing them in perpetuity. It’s why they can become maladaptive (like someone who puts others wants ahead of their own needs: Maladaptive Altruism).
The brain can’t keep doing this in perpetuity, they’re essentially a scab formation, trying to protect a wound until it has the right time and environment to be cleaned and healed. If the wound keeps getting cracked open, it never gets to that place and time and it’ll only make the wound grow deeper.
Now as for you Anon, if I could give you advice. Best I can reason as to why your therapist is telling you to lean into it — and I really fucking hope I’m right, otherwise I’ll be chilled to the fucking bone — is because Sublimation is the redirection of negative urges into more positive urges and behaviours. Akin to someone using an ice cube or hot water on their skin instead of more dangerous forms of self harm.
You’re stuck in a situation where, by keeping your brother around, it’s adding more fuel to a still raging fire. He is not allowing your psychological wounds to heal and adding more emotions into the matter that make it harder to unpack the trauma around him.
Like Lily, I’d urge you to wonder what value he has in your life. Urge you to ask yourself the reasons you still keep him around. “He’s family” should not be the only reason, “I don’t want to be Alone” shouldn’t be the only reason. Neither of those offsets the distress and negativistic feelings he causes in you. from what you said, he doesn’t seem to value your needs or feelings, putting his own physical pleasure above them. Being with someone like that is no different than being alone. If not worse.
As for your therapist, I implore you to take control of your own treatment. To challenge their views as well, they can only plan around what you tell them, and if you disagree that might just be the most powerful insight they could ask for.
If they don’t take kindly to being challenged, drop him faster than a child with a new phone. If this does happen, feel free to shop for therapists, not every therapist is perfect for every patient, and you deserve finding one who can empower you and help you to feel good about yourself and live your best life.
If I could make a non-professional, not-legally-medical-advice suggestion, is — if your therapist hasn’t already — to look into Psychodynamic therapy (To understand unconscious conflict that causes conscious symptoms and behaviours) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Using Acceptance and Mindfulness to increase psychological flexibility). Only you will know if they’re good for you, but I don’t want to pass up this chance to tell you just in case.
Lily, if you disagree with anything or want to add anything, I’m sorry and please do respectively. Anon, I’m still only learning, and haven’t gotten to practical stuff yet, so don’t take my word as more than just an attempt at advice.
(Also Pardon poor word choices and remember Anon, this is not your fault, but you have the power to heal from it)
I'm not sure if you want to answer this. Feel free to just delete. I've spent a decade hooking up with my older brother. He'll come around town, and he'll visit, and then we do the deed. I feel sick afterward, but I always do it, it's like the only way I feel like I even connect to him anymore. I know it's not normal, but I'm scared, and I feel like I can't stop. He gets really angry when I tell him we shouldn't. I have a fucked up porn addiction now, and my therapist told me that it's all normal and that I should just lean into it to see where it goes. He told me that I should cut out my brother, too. I can't even tell if this is good advice or not.
Tumblr media
Okay. Let's take this one thing at a time.
it's like the only way I feel like I even connect to him anymore
Given everything else you've said... why do you want to keep connecting to him? Why do you want him in your life? I'm not expecting an answer, and this isn't accusatory, it's just something I want you think about. Why do you want this man in your life at all, given that it seems like nothing about him brings you any joy?
If this were your boyfriend and not your brother, would you even consider staying in a relationship that is either "Sex or get yelled at"?
I have a fucked up porn addiction now, and my therapist told me that it's all normal and that I should just lean into it to see where it goes.
The human brain is magical in that while it is stubborn as a mule, it will eventually adapt to new things. There's a reason smokers always say the first three days cold turkey is the worst. Because after that your brain starts reconfiguring itself.
Some therapists believe that porn can be used to abate dark urges, but others disagree. Because the brain always wants more and more dopamine if it can get it, there's a contesting theory that using porn as an outlet only worsens a problem. In the same way that substance abuse or internet addiction works.
Psychiatry is a science, which means not all doctors agree on everything, and our understanding of psychology changes just like any other science.
I can't tell you if it's good advice, I personally would immediately walk out of any therapist who suggests porn as an outlet because I know it's not an effective therapy for me, but given what you've said it doesn't seem like it's helping.
If it's not making you feel better, then that's all the proof you need.
Like I said: All of this screams "Get a second opinion."
A professional second opinion, not mine.

What always gets me with this complaint is that the people making it missed the point. Yes this is kinda Feminism 101, The Barbie Movie was never going to be Greta Gerwig’s PhD on feminism, and the movie is designed around that.
Barbie’s story — and I hope this isn’t news or contentious — is quite distinctly a coming of age story; she in her own way hits puberty. Experiencing new and scary thoughts, being judged by others and feeling self conscious, being shaken by societal gender roles and having no idea where she fits in. Even at the end when she’s with Ruth she still asks for permission to be human. Permission to be a human. This is in some way mirrored by Sasha’s own perspective, someone who wasn’t bereft of society’s failings and also struggled with that.
The movie is talking to them, and to women like them.
America Ferrera’ speech is quite distinctly directed at Barbie in the midst of her development, and that’s a generally perfect microcosm to the movie itself. It’s for the 12 year olds who got their first crush, the 13 year olds who just had Aunt Flow’s first visit and can’t understand why their body hates them, to the 14 year olds being leered at for no reason in their freshman year of high school. To the 15 year old who settled for the first boyfriend, and the 16 that can’t understand why that boyfriend chose to scamper off with his buddies and left her hanging on their anniversary date. To the 17 year old thinking about what she wants to do with her life, in a school environment with counsellors that will discourage her, and to the 18 year old who’s just moving away from home for the first time, either for her first full time job or college.
The target demographic isn’t a social and gender sciences student doing their doctorate, but an attempt to reach the youth of today to become the PhD doctorates of tomorrow.
“The Barbie movie is like basic gender studies 101. It’s like the bare minimum for feminism”
YEAH SOME PEOPLE HAVENT TAKEN GENDER STUDIES 101 AND WOULDNT YOU AGREE WE ARE CURRENTLY AT LESS THAN THE BARE MINIMUM FOR FEMINISM?
things do not need to be perfect to be good. You cannot teach someone intersectionality if that person has not heard of bare minimum feminism. You might be on step 100 but just because you started earlier does not mean that everyone can jump to your level. They have to climb the stairs too. And the people at the top yelling down to the people at the bottom that being at the bottom is bad, they need to be at the top, IT DOES NOT ENCOURAGE THEM TO CLIMB UP.

Ok.
1) because Bruce is Bruce, the second he heard about scarecrow settling in gothomite suburbia with a bunch of kids, it took less than a day for him to buy the house opposite his as a safe house, and so now there’s a revolving door of bat kids going through it, excusing their casual involvement with Scaredad’s antics. Also they know each other’s identities, but because scarecrow has kids they agreed to all keep the collective secret. LIKE:
- Villain award dinner and Scaredad needs a last minute babysitter (not a crime as the bat kids would never), so Tim and Cass just show up, and it’s semi don’t ask questions. And the deal is that Bruce gets to be his not-date because Bruce needs to collect information on somebody, and because he and Scarecrow were college classmates, that’s their cover. But they can’t keep fighting like a married couple with scarecrow’s sabotage, until Scarecrow finds out the plan Batman’s trying to stop would endanger his kids, at which point he 180s and helps Bruce twice as hard.
Ironically he wins Best Supporting villain at the dinner, for his stint with Poison Ivy scaring the Gotham Republican Party.
As for Tim and Cass, they might’ve also had a bet going about where the skeletons in Scarecrow’s closet were, but we’re surprised to find dozens of family photos on the walls and school schedules on the fridge. Neither won, but they did have a massive game night with the kids where they got destroyed.
- Christmas time and one of the kids asked for the exclusive super toy of the year, but he’s still on his adjusting to becoming a nice dad instead of a shitty one, so he forgets/puts it off till it’s sold out. At which point he goes: well Gotham be damned if I’m not getting my children everything they want for Christmas, so he plans a heist, but of course the bat fam has to stop him. I’m thinking either Jason or Bruce, (probably Jason). And they do stop him, but they also let him escape so he can go back to his girls, but he does so extremely embittered.
Till next morning Jason shows up at the door with the exact present he wanted in hand, and a moral about how Jason’s had a revolving door of dads (bio, step, step’s correctional officer, adopted (Bruce), the one who brought him back to life (Ra’s), etc.) so he’s had a breadth of experience of good and mad dads, and he can tell Scarecrow wants to try to be good, but a good dad — specially a single dad — also needs to know when to ask for help. And he just leaves him on the porch with that.
- Child soccer league and it looks like none of the Scarekids are getting in, so instead of letting Scaredad threaten the PTA or kill the coach, Dick and Duke just show up, and alongside Scaredad and the kids have a full day soccer training session. Then the kid(s) get into the team and the end is at their first game goes great, in which Scaredad, Dick and Duke were all cheering.
- One where the Scarekids — and later on a small group of very bored but very chaos bat kids — get the wild idea to set up Scarecrow on a blind date… with Bruce. The girls saw him coming over a few times and got the very wrong idea, and the bat kids weren’t about to destroy their plans, so all the chaos ensues.
- an entire episode of grocery shopping, of Scaredad having to juggle the shopping list and the very many addendums from the girls and their antics at the store. And the last punchline is the bill which has him groan hard on his way home, having caved to most of the demands.
*Just a few morning ideas*
Im thinking Scaredad but its an 80s sitcom. Give me your best ideas

You know Lolo, this actually reminded me of one of my own university lecturers. Two memories of her in fact.
At an introductory lecture for a related Uni club, she had a bunch of 17 and 18 year old boys make highly sexual and intrusive questions at her. But she didn’t let them bother her, in fact, she’s clearly seen this far too often.
So part of my point here is that, yes, this is relevant as fuck and I’m loving this comic idea.
But then part 2 and the part id also suggest as a continuation:
At a writing event my lecturer mentioned something along the lines that she was one of the only like 2 black women teaching at a medical school in my entire country. Said she’d want to write a book about her experiences; professionally as in the difficulties with employment and publishing, and personally with some of the worst student behaviour I’ve ever seen. She hasn’t yet, and I really hope she does.
And… idk, your comic idea is great and had me thinking about that, because it’s still so critically relevant and happens to some of the coolest people. So uhhh… 10/10 idea I’m obsessed.
Pokemon Comic Idea
Sonia is starting up Pokémon biology seminars in Wyndon, but she notices people online are constantly talking about how hot she is and other misogynistic comments. At first, she shrugs it off as terminally online incel behaviour and blocks them, but the next day, Sonia encounters other women scientists in Wyndon who peer pressure her to dress more provocatively because itll get her more attention and they say that its a women's duty to look pretty. Sonia then tries dressing in shorter dresses at her next few seminars but as time goes on, hundreds of people online sneer that shes "not a real scientist" cos of what she wore. Sonia fears no matter what she talks about at her seminars, everyone will just jeer and treat her like an object, no matter what she does.
Throughout these past few weeks, Piers notices that Sonia's dressing weird and acting strange but Sonia assures him there's nothing to worry about. As soon as he saw the latest social media outburst at Sonia's seminar, he confronts Sonia herself before going onstage and tells her to stop trying so hard to. Sonia bursts into tears feeling that she'll never be taken seriously as a Pokemon Professor and thinks shes just a slut in a labcoat, Piers immediately hugs her tightly. He tells her that her knowledge and intelligence is the reason why she's the Pokemon Professor and that she shouldnt degrade herself to fit some assholes' ideals of what a female scientist should be. He puts on her labcoat and softly kisses her, Sonia snarks it must be a good luck to which Piers replies: "I would never give you a good luck kiss, cos you'll never need one."
He then watches amongst the audience as Sonia, with newfound confidence delivers a sterling speech about how her worth as a woman in the scientific community is not measured by her body, but her brain and thus continues her seminar as usual. To which the audience erupted in applause afterwards.
While there were some sneering comments from the women scientists Sonia met, she ignored them. And she was delighted to find that her seminar stream reached 2 million views and so many commenters online were saying how they were inspired by Sonia and want to take up studying Pokemon biology thanks to her.
Afterwards, Sonia and Piers snuggle up on the sofa watching history documentaries.

Fair fair, that line hit. Like many others. I was teetering on the verge of tears throughout till I cracked. It’s also remarkably funny. Also loved how the credits have pictures of the actual people, pictures of them with the actors that play them. That was a beautiful touch.
Thanks again!

I do like musicals! Of all walks of life! I was a theater kid in high school, it dripped a little into my college years, and it’s consistently something I at least fall back on on occasion. Some favorites in no particular are:

Reblogging this again cause... holy shit it had no right to be that good!
The way they managed a cast of like a dozen or so yet made it feel like it was a full freaking community, in what feels like a great nod to old Greek plays. The way you had so many stories intertwined, so much raw experience. The sense of community in that, the quintessential humanity.
Fuck... that was great! That song with everyone praying, in various religions yet harmonising beautifully, that was awesome! And then after they all get to leave and it gets painful. And then the mother says “he’s gone”, and suddenly I’m crying! And then it starts again on the 10th anniversary with the letters and the donations.
Thank you for introducing me to this, it was great. Title really does gain a new meaning by the end and it’s immaculate. It’s on the favourite’s list forever.

And P.S. we’ll save those “other ways” for Disney properties.

Oh my god yes!
Love Legally Blonde and Waitress. And I feel that Heathers comment; like, it’s not great, but sometimes it be like that.
One I feel gets slept on a bit is The Last Five Years. It’s not the best musical I’ve seen, but I do find it at least interesting to run through due to how it’s structured: Two stories told from opposite ends — anterograde and retrograde — about an ultimately doomed relationship, but also because of how much the creator of it reveals about himself, as it was not-officially inspired by his own divorce. So 🔥 if you have seen it/listen to it, and might be worth a try if you haven’t.
Also I just looked up Come From Away and now it’s my next movie night. Specially if I can find a recording of it.

Oh god... you’re right, I hate that you’re right but you’re right.
"the way people try to modernize the myth of Persephone and Hades without actually changing anything annoys me in general" would you mind elaborating?
So a lot of old and shitty romance is based entirely around some guy kidnapping someone. So Beauty and the Beast, Hades and Persephone, etc etc. They're pretty objectively shit, and in the case of Beauty and the Beast were literal propaganda.
The thing is... garbage het romance is the fetish of a lot of women. We all remember how every girl our age got really into the predatory stalking vampire books, and all those fucking serial killer groupies. And these things are awful. They're terrible. If this kink vanished tomorrow, the world would be better for it.
But where this is going is people will try to "modernize" these stories, but they won't change the part where the woman accepts her terrible position in life because that's the part they liked. They want to "modernize" it so their favourite romance can be called "feminist."
And in every single one of these cases, the modernizing is just the woman in question going "I'll have you know I am WILLINGLY accepting these chains!" or "I can fix him!" or "He can change!" or any other piece of actual garbage you'd hear from a 16 year old girl bringing home their drug addict boyfriend to meet the family.
You can't "modernize" a shitty story and keep the thing that made it shitty in the first place. Persephone is a more ancient version of Asherah in that regard. Her getting treated like shit is the entire point of that story.
If you're going to modernize the story, well... what if Persephone got tired of being treated like shit and just fucking kill him? What if the "modernization" was "Gunpowder and Lead"? But then you don't get Persephone and Hades being the Greek Mythology goth couple, which is the only reason people still cling to this story so much.

It’s always been a weird template to take, even beyond the whole “Greeks were misogynistic as hell”, and that’s for 2 parts.
1) it’s the story of Hades and Persephone... or Hades and Kore. Yeah... Kore means young woman, or girl, and in story Demeter — Kore’s mom — is grief stricken into absentia. Hence winter. So by all accounts this isn’t just kidnapping a woman, but a young woman, yes potentially even *that* young. Very much rings true to your last age gaps anon post. But-
2) There’s a reason as to why winter is relevant. Persephone is the daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, aka a seed. In the start of the myth and in other myths she is plenty depicted as a lover of nature and the world. Naturally, meet her mother. When Hades takes her to the underworld, and how it’s all tied with the coming of winter... this story if completely by accident ties a very close link between her marriage/relationship with Hades and her death.
When she leaves, her family suffers, the fields she cared for and nature she treasured suffers, she suffers. Her entire life withers and dies all for the sake of ending up with a man who kidnapped her and tied her to the underworld for x months of the year. It would be easier to just say “I hate women” at this point.
As likely as it is that the reason people glom to this myth is poor media literacy and even poorer kinks, it’s so disheartening to see this be one of the biggest takeaways from Greek myth. Specially cause as problematic as they were they still had some banger myths. Bad Bitch Atalanta taking pity on her sweet boy soon to be Himbo husband. Orpheus trying to overcome death out of love for his Eurydice. Eros and Psyche getting together and constantly one-upping her mother in law. Even Menelaus’ commitment to Helen is admirable, waging a 10 year war because you want your wife back would be peak lesbian- wait... is this what Sylvaina was doing?
There’s so much better out there, and as someone that loves and studied Greek Mythology it sucks to see people always choose this rotting and decaying pomegranate over the delicious ambrosia in Psyche’s hands.
"the way people try to modernize the myth of Persephone and Hades without actually changing anything annoys me in general" would you mind elaborating?
