Debbie Twice-Born
Tumblr media
“Enraged” © deviantArt user TheBoyofCheese
[This character was an NPC from my Age of Worms game, one of Filge’s undead minions after @canwefixitnoitsfucked took Filge from NPC to PC. Debbie’s name and personality were references to “Manos” the Hands of Fate; in that movie, Debbie is the poorly-dubbed little girl who gets turned into one of the undead. Debbie was much more of a joke character than a useful one, although Filge did keep her in a papoose to use her pale aura until she got too fragile to survive the kinds of AoEs they were dealing with. And since I brought Filge back as a weird mutant, I figured Debbie should get the same treatment.
The music box I refer to in the gear is new, but I think it fits well with the character. I assembled a whole huge soundtrack for Age of Worms, and both Filge and reality warping stuff were associated with Philip Glass music. Specifically, Filge’s themes were all taken from the Dracula score. So Debbie’s music box plays the theme from Candyman. ]
Debbie Twice-Born CR 16 CE Undead This young woman has a slight build with powerful and lean muscles, shorter than average but no less strong for it. Her hair is tousled and blonde, and her eyes are black pits looking over a mouth full of sharp, crooked teeth. She carries a bloodstained axe with practiced ease.
Debbie Twice-Born is Filge’s “daughter”. She is a slaymate, created from the daughter of a woman who Filge loved. The woman scorned Filge for his cruelty, and she and her daughter both died from a plague that Filge could easily have saved them from. Through Filge’s adventures, Debbie was quiet and distracted, complaining about the cold of death, and frequently looking for a lost puppy that may or may not have ever existed. When Filge was fragged by his own party, Debbie escaped, and wandered around Alhaster during the short lived Age of Worms on Oerth. When Kyuss died, the waves of powerful negative energy that suffused the region caused her to “grow up”, as it were, and advance from a child of about eight years old to a young woman of eighteen or so. Of course, she was still dead, and still crazy. But now much more dangerous.
Debbie Twice-Born spent a few months as a recreational serial killer before entering the Wormwarrens and finding her equally transformed “father” there. Filge now uses Debbie as his primary agent in the wider world, committing assassinations for him, gathering useful supplies and spying on his former allies. As her powers have grown, Filge has given her a longer leash, and she has made multiple excursions to alternate realities through the depths of the Shadow Plane.
Debbie’s latest excursions have brought her to Castle Xyntillian, where she is a guest of honor and mutually exploited. Debbie has considered merely butchering Aristide Malevol and stealing his role as head of the family, but knows that without finding and destroying his phylactery, that that would be a fool’s errand. Likewise, Aristide is happy to have a powerful pet assassin on hand who is ultimately disposable to him, but also wants to pick her brain about Filge’s exploits, powers and resources. Debbie is somewhat scatterbrained and never paid much attention to the technical details of necromancy, leaving such conversations a source of frustration for the Patriarch Lich. As far as actual friends within the family, Debbie Twice-Born gets along well with Hubert Malevol the Hunter, whose enormous kennels of mundane, monstrous and undead hounds give her plenty of doggies to play with.

Exceptional Resources (Ex) Debbie has the treasure of a 15th level PC, and has used some of that money to obtain and use a tome of influence +4. These advantages give her a +1 increase to her CR. Grown Up (Ex) As an undead child magically matured to adulthood, Debbie has a slightly different set of abilities than normal for the giant simple template. Instead of gaining a +4 bonus to Constitution, she gains a +4 bonus to Charisma, and a +10 foot increase to her land speed. Pale Aura (Su) A slaymate exudes an aura that empowers necromantic magic. Any necromancy spell cast within a slaymate’s pale aura gains a +1 bonus to the DC (if any) and is cast at +1 caster level. A spellcaster within the slaymate’s aura can choose to use any metamagic feat he knows on a necromancy spell he casts without increasing the casting time or spell level. Doing so, however, deals damage to both the slaymate and the caster equal to 5 x the level the spell would ordinarily be adjusted to. There is no saving throw to resist this damage. Shadowy Mist Form (Sp): At 10th level, a stygian slayer can transform into an inky black cloud of mist. This functions as gaseous form, except it also obscures vision as fog cloud. The slayer can use this ability for a number of minutes per day equal to his level. These minutes need not be consecutive, but must be used in 1-minute increments. This ability replaces the advanced slayer talent gained at 10th level. Spell Use (Ex) At 7th level, a stygian slayer is able to use spell completion and spell trigger items as if they were an arcane caster with these spells on his spell list: darkness, forced quietUM, modify memory, nondetection, obscuring mist, phantom steed, shadow walk , and wizard spells of the illusion school of spell level 0 through 4th. The slayer’s uses their class level as their caster level for this ability. This ability replaces stalker.

We're wrapping up the third installment of Age of Worms - moving quickly through the early parts of this adventure! This is a nice change of pace from the first two dungeon crawls, offering overland encounters and challenging players to chart their own path to peace through a complicated situation. There's also a small but real chance for it to be quite deadly, for reasons that are worth looking at.

This is an unusual update, but my Age of Worms party just passed another major boss and this is one I wanted to share because it's just so ridiculous. The Overgod is the physical avatar of a false religion, a created faith designed to pull worshippers from three other gods and repurpose them into useful tools. The followers of Kyuss have goals they want to achieve without drawing attention to themselves, so a triad cult acting under false pretenses can progress those goals. Everyone blames the Ebon Triad, and none are the wiser that Kyuss is the one benefiting.
In order to achieve this, high ranking members of Kyuss' followers penned a false religious book, claiming that the gods Hextor, Erythnul, and Vecna were destined to fuse together into one greater Overgod, who would bring down other gods and conquer all. They spread this information to vulnerable members of these faiths, luring away members who sought something even greater and driving them to any extreme action that they thought would achieve this impossible goal. A key need for this however was to ensure that the apostate clerics and paladins of these gods would maintain their divine powers, to trick them into believing that their gods still supported their goals. The Overgod was created for this, a fiend formed from the divine power of Kyuss to channel portions of the trapped demigod's power to these believers, replacing their true god with a proxy. This allows a small army of splinter groups to recruit and grow, following the writing of their heratical book to bring about events leading to the Age of Worms.
The Overgod is a three-headed, six armed monster. It towers thirty feet high, a powerfully built creature missing two of its left hands and one of its right. The figure seems to be made of some strange stone that looks almost like leather in places, and one of its three heads is missing an eye. The artwork above was created by Marq, a player in the game and OMEGAtri on Twitter for the session, when I complained that Paizo hadn't included any actual artwork of their super boss monster anywhere in the adventure that included it.
My party recently travelled down into the hidden temple that housed this Overgod, the avatar of the Ebon Triad (renamed the Warbound Triad in my home game because the belief was that this new Overgod created from three lesser gods would overthrow Bane, the primary god of war and tyranny), and found the Overgod. This was a rough fight for my level 15 party, dropping the barbarian to 18 hp, the fighter/rogue/bladesinger to 12, and batting the warlock/paladin off the wall of the chamber like a tennis ball. They were victorious however, even with the extra 100 hp I have the Overgod to face them. They're a group of 6 well optimized characters with lots of powerful magic items and extra features, they can handle a lot. I wouldn't recommend throwing this against most average groups, this is an absolutely ridiculous creature.
A few of the features within this are written in ways that don't necessarily fit perfectly within 5e's standards. I do a lot of stuff for my home games that I wouldn't publish normally, such as the way that the Overgod's Multiattack works. That was a feature where I knew exactly how I wanted to limit its attack spread, and writing it out was kind of a pain. The Overgod can't just claw-claw-claw-bite one creature, it has to spread its attacks around, as it's just too big and bulky to easily bring three clawed hands down onto a single Medium opponent. If you'd like to make the Overgod a bit more generic, you can change Blessing of Erythnul to Blessing of the Trickster, Blessing of Hextor to Blessing of the Warrior, and Blessing of Vecna to Blessing of the Magician, or swap the gods out for other appropriate ones. No 13th Age version of this particular stat block.
Originally from Dungeon Magazine issue 131, the Prince of Redhand adventure. This post came out a week ago on my Patreon. If you want to get access to all my monster conversions early, as well as access to my premade adventures and other material I'm working on, consider backing me there!
The Overgod Huge fiend, neutral evil Armor Class 20 (natural armor) Hit Points 287 (25d12 + 125) Speed 40 ft., climb 20 ft. Str 25 (+7) Dex 19 (+4) Con 20 (+5) Int 12 (+1) Wis 20 (+5) Cha 20 (+5) Saving Throws Con +11, Wis +11, Cha +11 Skills Perception +11 Damage Immunities cold Damage Resistances acid, fire, bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks Senses darkvision 120 ft., passive Perception 21 Languages Abyssal, Common, Draconic, Infernal Challenge 17 (18000 XP) Blessing Of Erythnul (1/Day). As a bonus action, the Overgod can separate splinters of itself off into separate beings. It immediately creates two copies of itself in empty spaces within 30 feet of the Overgod. Each of these copies has the same stats as the Overgod, except they cannot use any of its innate spellcasting or legendary actions, do not gain the benefits of Blessing of Hextor or Blessing of Vecna, any attacks they make deal half damage, and they have only 10 hit points, and they act immediately after the Overgod. They disappear after 1 minute or if they end their turn more than 60 feet away from the Overgod. Blessing Of Hextor (1/Day). The Overgod is driven by the battle fervor of Hextor. As a bonus action, it can enter a terrible fury for one round. The aspect immediately heals 44 (10d8) hit points, and has advantage on all weapon attack rolls and a +8 bonus to damage rolls while in this fury. Additionally, creatures targeted by Crush have disadvantage on the saving throw. Three Heads. The Overgod has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks, and on saving throws against being blinded, charmed, deafened, frightened, stunned, and knocked unconscious. Actions Multiattack. The Overgod makes four attacks: three with its Claws, and one with its Bite. It can replace each Claw attack with a Crush attack. The Overgod can't make more than two claw attacks against a single Medium or smaller creature, and it can't make Claw attacks against a creature it is grappling. Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target the Overgod is grappling. Hit: 21 (4d6+7) piercing damage. Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d6+7) slashing damage and the target is grappled (escape DC 15). The Overgod has 3 hands, each of which can grapple one target. Crush. One creature the Overgod is grappling must make a DC 21 Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 16 (2d8+7) bludgeoning damage, and is restrained until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, it takes half as much bludgeoning damage and isn't restrained. Swat. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d8+7) bludgeoning damage and the target must succeed on a DC 21 Strength saving throw or be pushed 15 feet directly away from the Overgod and knocked prone. Spellcasting. The Overgod casts one of the following spells at 5th, requiring no material components and using Wisdom as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 21, +11 to hit with spell attacks): At will: charm person, divine favor, magic missile, shield of faith, magic weapon, pass without trace, spiritual weapon 1/day each: crusader's mantle, dimension door, dispel magic, freedom of movement, polymorph, spirit guardians, dominate person, flame strike Reactions Blessing Of Vecna (Recharge 5-6). The Overgod gains advantage on a saving against one spell, or gives disadvantage to a spell attack targeting it. If it saves against the spell, or the spell attack misses it, the Overgod regains hit points equal to three times the spell's level. Legendary Actions The Overgod can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Overgod regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn. Cast A Spell. The Overgod casts one of its innate spells. Move. The Overgod moves up to half its speed. Crush. The Overgod uses Crush. Swat. The Overgod makes one Swat attack.

Danny is so, oh so very tired about the amount of marriage proposals that popped up in front of him. Not even a day past his announcement as Crown prince either.
He's thankful that neither of his four parents are pushing him towards accepting it, but it's everyone (besides his friends of course) else who either try and subtly suggest it or outright asks him if he's chosen a spouse yet.
He's only 14! He doesn't need a spouse! And they were probably far older than him too!
Even Vlad of all people took some kind of pity on him and just decided to be a normal (for a billionaire) guy who isn't trying to kill his dad.
...However, that doesn't mean he wants him to seduce him either!
(Danny: Stop trying to seduce my dad you low-budget vampire!
Vlad, calmly sipping tea: No.)
If he wasn't majorly burnt out from the number of proposals he has to sort through, he would most definitely throw him far across town, away from his dad and mom.
He needed to find a way to stop all of these letters that just keep coming, and fast. He doesn't know how much longer he could take of reading fancy script over and over and over again, his eyes already hurt enough.
He tried to ask his Father for help, his only response was to choose a consort that he saw fit to stand alongside him. Then he had to flee before he gushed about his pops.
He asked his pops, who only said that the answer would come to him in time. Which was of no help whatsoever.
He asked his mom, she at least tried to help somewhat. Giving him some equipment to ward off any ghost who would try and forcibly take him as a consort, which had a low chance of happening considering his strength, but he was happy about it regardless.
He then finally asked his dad, after making sure that vampiric leech isn't near any of his human parents. Surprisingly, he had a pretty good idea of what to do.
He was a halfa, wasn't he? Why limit himself to just ghosts? Surely, due to his half-human status he could choose someone near his age among humanity.
Well, not in those exact words, but it was a great idea regardless! Plus, they never did specify if he had to choose a ghost consort anyways.
Now he just had to decide who to pick, really. His two best friends are out of the option, they're close, but not in that sort of way. Plus, Sam is busy with Undergrowth and Tucker bonding with Technus who was apparently apart of his family tree somewhere along the line.
Then, when he was sorting through the letters and was sure his eyes were about to bleed from reading so many fancy words, he felt it. A tug in his chest, gently urging him somewhere, and you know what, it's way better than what he was doing now, so he answered.
He felt the clothes he was swearing in that moment fade into away into the outfit he wore for his coronation. A suit, a crown made of the coldest ice from the Far Frozen, a cape made from the stars along with various little knickknacks made from various gems and a veil hung over his face.
He looked pretty good, if he says so himself. Though he didn't and still doesn't know the purpose of the veil.
He appeared in what looked like an event for a high society party, most likely filled with various rich people. He floated up and quickly looked over the people and released a sigh of relief that Vlad wasn't here, say what you will, but he doesn't fancy meeting with someone who's actively trying to seduce his dad.
He folded his arms behind his back, trying to imitate the imposing figure of his father from his place in the air, looking down at the cultists(?) below who summoned him.
"Who dares summon me." He stated, rule number one, statements hold power, questions do not. The cultist below fell to his knees, either out of devotion or fear, he didn't know.
"Oh, Prince of the infinite, we called you today for the sole purpose of serving this world to one of your standing, please let us be your servants and spare us when you plunge the world into ruin!" Ah, devotion, then. His eyes bore into the woman (from the sound of her voice) below, his silence working well to unnerve her and the other guests.
"Hm." The reward was already stated, but he neither wants too nor will take over the world. "Denied." It was short, swift, and to the point in his books, he thinks he's doing well acting out Pariah Dark!
"B-but my liege, the king-"
"What the king has been known for in the past, has nothing to do with me. You dare to assume something about me, lowly human." The human below him was actually fully blown shivering, now, slamming her head down onto the floor and shouting out a number of apologies.
Rule number two, do not take back requests you have already denied.
Ok, now he feels bad, that probably hurt a lot. But he's already come this far so-
"Is that the only reason you have called me, or do you require something else. Much of my time is not something you can afford." The woman was most undoubtedly about to say something, probably more apologies, or maybe something else, but the sounds of fighting reached the room and the doors slammed opened, the body of a cultist(?) flying through the air and the appearance of what were most likely heroes.
"Well?" He let that question slide, the cold around the room descending around the woman below as a bunch of other cultists tried to fight off the heroes.
The woman seemed hysterical with worry, most likely not wanting to go to jail, perhaps. She quickly took her head off the floor and tried to stand up, almost falling back to the ground but managing to find her footing. "M-my liege, please help us!"
He tilted his head. "And as to what, would you give me?"
"The sacrifice, yes! The sacrifice!" The woman quickly pointed below him, and only then, did Danny realize there was a boy bound below him, only to be met with a glare.
Danny hummed. Yes. That will do. "It shall be done."
Danny waved his hand, ice sprouting from the ground to force the heroes and cultists apart and then blasting a hole through the nearby wall and to the outside, a path of ice leading down to the ground. "Go." He commanded, the woman nodding her head quickly and calling to the others and disappearing outside, he then blocked off the hole with ice.
He then slowly floated downwards, besides the bound human, ignoring the shattering of ice and footfalls of no doubt the heroes trying to stop him from what he was doing. He leaned over the boy- about his age- and asked one question.
"Do you wish to become my consort?"

She felt a momentary sadness.  She tapped her pinky with her thumb twice, and the embedded magnets noted the signal.  She’d recorded her own brain activity and movements when contemplating the Bonesaw clones, and it was this that she drew on, manipulating her own body much as she had manipulated Blasto’s. Her body language wasn’t her own.  Her smile, the way she walked, the gestures, all were fine tuned to match the Bonesaw of before.
Great tragedy of Riley that when she first came to comprehend that she's a bad person, or perhaps not even wholly in control of herself at all, when she found herself unable to act cheerfully the way she used to towards her atrocities, she didn't have anywhere to go or any idea of how to live in a way that isn't Bonesaw. She's been Bonesaw for so much of her life after all. So she reprogrammed her body to act that way for her and she halted her aging so she'd never be able to stop being Bonesaw, not in her actions, and not in the way she's viewed by others. Forever.

i’m gonna make a bold claim. i don’t think hua cheng should have reverted into a child for that one arc where he was conserving his spiritual energy. i think he should have turned into a worm or something instead. and xie lian should have made him a little enclosure and filled it with leaves and carried little worm hc with him through mount tonglu

We haven't quite finished the second installment of Age of Worms, but we're close enough that I wrote up my thoughts on it. Unfortunately, I must report that it's the most infamous segment of the adventure path, and I understand why; not only has the editing missed several mistakes in stat blocks and continuity, a few structural flaws transform it from a gritty dungeon crawl into a death trap if you or your players are unprepared. Let's talk about why.
