In Which the Archaic hits home, OR digitizing family recipe cards

Recipe for Poinsettia Bread, basically a fancy gumdrop bread at bottom

Thanks to the arctic freeze busting multiple pipes at my apartment/work, I am staying with my family while the pipes get contained enough so that i can have running water.

While at my parent's house, I got bored and decided to finally start digitizing all the recipe cards from my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother (around 100 years of history, possibly a bit more), it's fun to see how the location, historical context, and available ingredients has changed.

For context these cards come from women raised in the Ohio river valley area, think Cincinnati and Illinois in small town, lower income farm family. And covers basically all of the 1900's including the Great depression, and both world wars, and poverty levels that include sending the brothers to hunt squirrels and rabbits on the edge of town for meat.

I have come to realize a couple of things:

We are losing basic cooking knowledge. Most of these Recipes are simply a list of ingredients with volumes, usually the oven temperature, and sometimes the cook time and pan size. BUT NOT ALL. Some are just the ingredients and how much, no other information.

Some of these items were simply implied to be included. The most notable one is the utter lack of Blueberries as an ingredient in the Blueberry Muffins Good recipe, not once but twice, as two separate cards of the same recipe were in the box in two different hand writings.

If we don't take action, many of our cooking skills may go the way of some of the ancient cities. the "everyone knows were town such and so is, so why would we ever say where it is or even include it on maps" adventures.

Anyways I have had a grand evening deciphering some recipes with my mom, including almost an hour of deciding how the instructions and order of steps went for my great grandmothers Poinsettia Bread went, and how much flour should be in the recipe.

Esther Whannel’s Poinsettia Bread

Makes 2 breads

1 packet yeast (1 Tbsp)

¼ cup warm water

⅓ cup + 1 tsp sugar

¾ cup milk

1 tsp salt

⅓ cup butter

3 eggs

5 ½ cup + ¼ cup flour

Lemon Zest

Spiced gum drops, with some chopped for decoration

Chopped nuts

Frosting

Red sugar

Mix packet of yeast in ¼ cup warm water with 1 tsp sugar, set aside until active. Meanwhile, scald ¾ cup of milk, then add ⅓ cup sugar, 1 tsp salt and ⅓ cup butter, removing from heat once combined and let cool until tepid. Beat 3 eggs and add to milk mixture followed by the yeast sponge. In a separate bowl, mix lemon zest with 5 ¼  cups flour. Mix 2 ½ cups flour into wet mix then work in remaining flour until a workable dough forms, knead until smooth and let rest 1 ½ hours.  In the dry bowl, combine ¼ cup flour with chopped nuts and gumdrops. Punch down dough and knead in gumdrops and nuts. Divide dough in half. Using 1 portion of dough, shape a small round center for flower. Cut the remainder of the portion into 12 pieces for petals, shape into petals and layout in flower shape. Cover and set aside, repeat for other portion of dough. Let rise 1 hour, then bake at 375*F until golden brown. Frost while warm, decorate center with gumdrop pieces, sprinkle petals with red sugar. 

This recipe was not the clearest set of instructions, and so We spent a while trying to determine the most likely method. We based the above instructions on a Stollen bread. The ingredient list is also an estimation as well.

I love it so much, its unfortunately got some rough spots especially at the start with the character daiya. But as for the story at whole its really great

Its about a man who wakes up with no memories of you he is, where he came from, or why he was buried in the dirt. It's about the journey of this man as he discorves who he was to those around him before he lost his memories. It's about a man deciding who he wants to be in an ocean of perspectives of his character from others.

It's about family and the unbreakable bond with your mother no matter where you go and what happens. Even if that means doing things that no one else will understand or even hate you for doing.

watching the first 2 episodes of frieren last year shook me so bad i still can't get myself to continue it, but between what i remember of it and the nightmares episode of dungeon meshi i can't stop thinking about the ways laios would prepare marcille for his death. what would he leave behind to remind her that he (and by extension all the people she loved and who loved her) are still with her in spirit, even if not in body?

Thinking about how likely it is that BTAS Ivy grew old n spent all of that time fully believing that Harley died. That despite all her efforts and desperation to save her and get her away from Joker she didn't, she couldn't, and she lost her. That Harley died the same day that wretched man did and it became just yet another thing linking her to him for eternity.

Purity of Mind

Dora looked so innocent, asleep on her bed. The fresh white bandages binding her crown looked more like a mark of holiness than disaster. The doctor claimed she'd fallen from a balcony and hit her head upon a stair rail. Adam thought it seemed too suspicious an accident. A disaster on the one day he'd left the house? His sure-footed little wife wouldn't have stumbled like that--not unless she were nearly out of her wits. Perhaps fleeing from some great terror.

"She'll wake soon," the doctor assured him. "Her body's healed enough, but with a head injury like that, there's no telling what state her brain will be in."

The state itself, Adam thought, would be telling enough.

As if roused by the doctor's words, Dora's eyelids fluttered. She sat up, pale and trembling. Her gaze landed upon Adam, and she started to scream.

"Who are you?" she shrieked, gathering the bedclothes to cover herself. "What are you doing in my room?"

Adam had steeled himself for the usual accusations, but this left him off-balance.

Finally, he managed to say, "Dora, it's just me. Adam. Your husband."

"I have no husband!"

"We wed six months ago."

"Liar!" she shrieked. "I'd never marry a man with such an awful beard!"

Adam stroked his blue-black whiskers, neatly trimmed for his homecoming. A deep chuckle rumbled in his throat; after months of her tiptoeing around him, her frankness was amusing. "I paid your parents richly for the privilege."

Dora paused at that. The mercenary child of mercenary parents--the tale would ring true, no matter her objections to his facial hair. Yet the bewilderment didn't fade from her face. "I've never seen this house before."

"You've been mistress here six months."

"I don't believe you."

"Whether you believe me or not, it's true. You fell from a staircase and hit your head."

Her eyes were fire. "I'll bet you pushed me!"

"I was away from home. I only just returned." He would never have opted for such an impersonal death. It was much more satisfying to feel the life draining away beneath his fingers.

The thought brought him back to reality. No need to wrestle with her delusions; only one truth mattered.

"Dora," Adam asked. "Where are the keys?"

"What keys?"

"I left the keys of the house in your keeping. I'll need them returned."

"I never had any keys!"

Adam looked to the doctor, who said, "We've found no keys on her person."

Missing? Impossible. Adam stormed from the room and set the servants searching for the keys. Nothing in her wardrobe. Nothing in the rooms. Nothing in the gardens.

The door on the third floor was locked, with no signs of entry.

Adam returned to the sickroom as the sun was setting. Dora sat quietly on her bed, having been calmly convinced of her new reality, completely unaware of the turmoil she'd thrown his life into.

He could have torn her limb from limb right there, but he had no proof yet she was deserving of it. For the moment, his strategy was gentleness.

He sat on the bed beside her. "Dora, my dove, think. Can you remember where the keys might be?"

"I can't even remember you."

Adam examined her in every detail--the tips of her fingers, the whites of her eyes, the curl of her lips. No signs of deception.

"You truly can't remember anything?"

Tears glittered in her eyes as she shook her head.

She looked as innocent as a newborn babe. The timid little fool he'd married couldn't fake such total ignorance. If she'd peered behind the door, she'd lost the memory of what she'd seen. If she'd disobeyed, he had no way of knowing.

A new twist to the game--a second chance.

Adam left the room in a state of contentment. He could get new keys made. His secret was safe--locked away either behind the door or in his wife's blank mind.

And if her memory returned? If she had memories of that bloody chamber?

He could always kill her later.

Comic Book Saturday

Weirdly, I have not recommended anything Batman related since 2019. Yeesh... this one though. I was surprised when I liked this one so much. It originates on the Webtoon website, but I've been reading them once they're made into a Trade Paperback collections (there are two Volumes out right now in the Wayne Family Adventures, two Vixen NYCs, and one Zatanna). They are hilarious.

And, it is what is says in the title. It’s a bunch of short little adventures of the extended ‘Wayne’ Family (i.e. Bat Family). In the case of this collection it’s more of a web comic sort of storyline structure, not so much one big gigantic story, although there are connections throughout the book. It's a nice balance between story and funny quips and situations and stuff. And, did I say that it's super amazingly hilarious too.
