"chris?"
"phone charger girl!"
"the fuck is he doing here?" my voice boomed in the garage, causing nathan to flinch slightly.
"woah, you two know each other?"
"sort of." chris responded with that stupid smug smirk on his face.
"not at all, actually." i responded quickly, immediately shutting down chris' disgusting expression.
my heartbeat was racing. i couldn't feel anything but anger in every fiber of my being. i couldn't help but remember to myself earlier today.
i had been living in massachusetts for about three days now. very interesting place, very different from florida.
after my mom's drug addiction became a major issue, cps was informed and i was sent to my dad's in boston, where i was completely unfamiliar with everyone and everything.
my dad's side, they weren't complete strangers if checking his status on facebook counted as being close.
shortly after i was born, my mom took me and left my dad in boston while we fled to live in florida. and as i get older, i can't help but feel more hatred towards the woman. my dad was a great guy, never deserved the way she treated him. he definitely did not deserve his first child being ripped away from his grasp a few months into my life.
when my mom and i moved to florida, my dad met another woman and had a child with her, whose name is nathan.
he seems like a really cool guy, an awesome brother to have, so i was looking forward to this move a lot, more than i probably should have.
the feeling of fresh air was appealing to me and the feeling of finally being there to reassure my dad that i want to be with him was even more exciting to me.
nate and i clicked pretty quickly, talking about our music taste on the way home from the airport. we talked a lot about video games, and he told me he was involved in a small garage band and plays the drums.
"that's so fucking cool!" i exclaimed with a bright smile, and nathan nodded.
"yeah! we mostly do covers now, but i plan on releasing some new and original music soon."
i nodded as i stayed focused on nate as he spoke, playing with my hands in my lap nervously.
the fact that this kid was my brother was so mind blowing to me. i couldn't wait.
the doe family had left to go to an event they had only bought three tickets for. i reassured them over and over that i was okay with staying at the house and continuing to settle in. and with that they left.
i dug through my bag and frowned when i came to a tragic realization.
"fuck." i cursed under my breath as i stood up and slid on my shoes.
time to go to that one gas station down the street we stopped at on the way here from the airport.
i left the house through the front door and slid my earbuds into my ears, playing my favorite playlist as i walked down the street.
boston was a lot more close together than florida. it genuinely made my heart happy.
about fifteen minutes into my walk and i find the gas station, pulling the door opened and look at the employee at the counter, smiling faintly to greet him. his eyes were glued to his phone though, so i turned to make my way up and down the aisles and look for the phone charger that works for my phone.
"eighteen dollars is fucking bizarre." i muttered under my breath at the charging brick box that i now have between my fingers. i carefully took it off the bar and grabbed a six ft long cord, making my way to the counter.
this is great. no job, new place, and i was already burning a hole into my savings for a fucking phone charger.
i set the two boxes on the counter and began digging through my pockets to find my wallet, the boxes hitting the counter a little harder than i had intended.
"woah there, sensing some aggression from 'ya. boyfriend start an argument with you or what?"
i finally found my wallet, but my eyes shifted quickly to the boy at the counter. "excuse me?" i asked, my face flushed at the thought. "it doesn't-" i blinked a few times. this kid was insane. "just ring me out please." i sighed as i inserted my card in the cardreader.
"relax sweetheart, just yankin' your chain." he stated defensively, skipping through the prompts on his screen. his hair was a little longer than average, and fairly wavy. he had a silver cuban link bracelet on one wrist and a few small handmade ones on the other, a ring or two on each hand. he had silver hoops in his ears and a plain black t-shirt on over his blue baggy jeans.
i stared at him in disbelief before i put my pin into the pad, yanking out my card as soon as it beeped and quickly shoving it into my wallet. chris set the charger boxes into a small plastic bag, placing it on the counter between us.
"i'm not your sweetheart," i narrowed my eyes at the nametag on his shirt, sucking in through my teeth, "chris."
i gripped the bag and left the gas station, and never turned back to see chris with his arms raised, and that disgusting smirk on his face.
my music was playing extra loud in my headphones in a desperate attempt to drown out the sound of nate slamming the drums in the garage.
i carefully sat up, my hand moving to run through my hair as i slipped on my shoes and stepped down the stairs. i was just wearing some pajama shorts and an oversized hoodie, but who even cares, right?
my hair was thrown into a messy bun, and i had one earbud in as my eyes were glued to my phone. i turned the doorknob to the garage carefully before stepping in and lifting my head as the music came to a halt.
and with that, my eyes widened.
and that's how we got here. with a finger pointed to my face.
"the fuck is he doing here?" my voice boomed in the garage, causing nathan to flinch slightly.

"sort of." chris responded with that stupid, smug smirk on his face.
"not at all, actually." i immediately barked back, crossing my arms.
nate looked between us both and shrugged it off quickly before he pulled a chair beside him. "come listen, y/n. i think you'd like it a lot." he told me.
i couldn't say no. i really was curious to hear nathan play. "okay, sure. just for a bit though." i reminded him of the time, and he smiled brightly and sat down in his seat.
i felt chris' eyes burning into the back of my head the whole time, his shaggy brunette locks perfectly draping over his forehead, which was a bit damp, while his eyes shifted to focus on his guitar again.
nate turned to me with a bright smile, grabbing his drumsticks as he glanced to the other two, making sure they were ready.
i watched the three and smiled as they began playing.
they were really good, actually.
better than i had expected them to be.
with nathan slamming the drums with his drumsticks and the boy i didn't know yet playing the bass, chris actually knocked his part out of the park.
chris glanced up for half a second, where we locked eyes. my eyes widened as he turned back to his guitar and a small smile grew on his face.
i hate this kid.
the song came to an end, and i turned to nathan, applauding happily.
"you guys sound great, genuinely. have you guys worked on any original stuff?"
nathan chuckled and shrugged, glancing between the other two. "a bit. chris writes phenomenal lyrics. we're working on it."
i glanced to chris for a moment, who was now gently strumming the strings of his guitar. i gulped as i stared at his hands, then turned back to nate. "i'm excited for you guys. let me know if i can do anything to help?"
nate nodded happily, and i stood up.
"alright, i'm gonna try and go to sleep. good luck to you guys." i waved at the three, and smiled at nate, my eyes quickly glancing at chris who waved softly back, no clear expression on his face anymore.
and with that, i opened the garage door and shut it, before taking a deep sigh and leaning against it.
"dude, you didn't tell me your sister was bad as hell," an unfamiliar voice rang, which i assumed was the bassist.
"wh- ben, gross! shut up dude," nathan quickly stated.
i cringed at the boy's comment, shaking my head quickly as if he could see me responding or something.
"invite her more often." chris stated blankly, standing up from his seat as he adjusted his guitar strap.
nathan turned to chris and narrowed his eyes.
i quickly stood up and made my way back to my bedroom, laying flat against the bed and turning up the music playing in my earbuds.
chris playing guitar and writing some lyrics.
it made me genuinely curious about whether or not this guy actually wrote good lyrics.
i hated being curious about him.
but i needed to know more.

“Sorry I’m late.” you walked into lexis and cassie room. To find lexi, kat, and maddy sitting there talking but no cas? You knew Cassie has been sneaking around and you have your guess.
“Girl where have you been?” Maddy asked you.
“Oh I went to get in n out with fez. As soon as he dropped me off I rushed over here.” you explained to them.
“Fez? Like in fezco?” a smile creeped up on lext face. You nodded your head as you bit back a smile.
“I knew something was going on when I saw you at the party together!” Kat said “are you two dating now or?”
“What no” you answered quickly. “We are just friends.”
“Bullshit.” maddy said. “You’re smiling like crazy and I’ve never seen you like that over a boy so spill.”
“Nothing is going on, we are just friends. At the party he asked for my number so I gave it to him then he asked if I wanted to hang out today and i said yes.”
“But you like him right?” lexi asked
“Well yea. He’s kinda cool.” you grinned. “Soo.. where cas?”
“I don’t know she’s been acting hella weird lately.” Maddy replied. You looked at Lexi to see her looking at you and you could tell we were thinking the same thing.
“Hey, y/n can you walk with me to the corner store. I want some chips.”
“Yea sure. Do you guys want anything?”
“Naw,” Kat and Maddy said.
“Okay see you in a little bit.” The walk down the stairs was quiet. We waited until we were walking out of the door to start talking.
“Listen lex imma say something about your sister and i don’t want you to get offended she just has been acting weird and i have a guess of why.”
“I’m not going to get mad, i think we are thinking the same thing always.”
“I think cassie is fucking nate.”
“Me too! I think she is because she is always talking on her phone at night and texting. I heard her say nate on the phone and i know she wasn’t talking to maddy because she had a flirty tone to her voice.” Lexi explained.
“You told me she was getting up at like 4am like getting ready and shit but i notice how different she’s been dressing. Like she is getting ready for something or to impress someone. Rue told me she saw her get into his car but i don’t know how true this is because the drugs be making her imagine shit and-
“Wait? Rue replased!” Lexi asked shocked.
“I think so. I know the difference between when the rue is on drugs or not. But I think she stopped when she met jules. Then Jules left her at the bus station. She’s been acting differently since that night but I’m not sure so don’t take my word for it.”
“y/n do you actually think cassie is fucking nate?”
“I don’t know, I would hope not, that is so messed up and literally the unthinkable.”
“We can’t say anything to maddy unless we know that truth, i don’t want to assume things you already know maddy trusts cassie with her life.”
“I can’t worry about this right now. I literally have to go to fez’s house for the first time tomorrow.”
“So you guys are dating!” Lexi exclaimed.
“No lex, im helping his little brother ashray with his school work”
“So nothing is going to happen between you too?”
“I don’t think so, we might watch love is blind, i told him how obsessed i am with it and now he’s wants to watch it with me.”
“What!Don’t watch the new episodes without me y/n, that’s our thing.”
“Dont worry im not.”
Next day
The first thing you did after school was make your way to fez’s house. You knocked on the door and fez answered.
“Hi,” you said shly.
“Hey whats up.” he moved out of the doorway to let you in.
“Nothing much.” you said walking in looking around.
“Imma go get ash.”
“Okay!” you watch as he walks to the hallway.
“Hi” , you heard a voice say. You turned around to see this girl sitting on the same one from the store that fez told you not to worry about. You could sense yourself getting jealous but fez said she’s just a friend so it shouldn’t bother you but it did.
“Um hey? Im y/n”
“Your y/n? Wow fez was right you are really beautiful. Im faye.”
Fez said I was beautiful? What.
“I know your friend Rue, i met on new years she’s really cool.” she said slowly.
“Yup-”
“Hey y/n this is ash.” you turned your body to see a kid that looked no younger than 15 with tattoos on his face. Hold up this is the kid that did rues and jule lip tat. Holy shit when she said a guy I didn’t mean she meant a kid!
“Oh hey.” you gave him a friendly smile.
“Sup” his face remained the same, your smile faded a little bit. Maybe he’s just doesn’t like new people you thought to yourself.
“You wanna start now?
“Sure” you both walked over to the couch, Faye excuse herself saying she had to go do something. Everything was going good for the first 20 minutes but then Ash started asking questions about you and fez.
“Where did you two meet?”
“At the store that he owns.”
“Weird, I didn’t see you there. Are you guys dating?”
“Nope, we are just friends.”
“That’s funny because he acts like you guys are.”
“Wait what?!” you said confused and shocked.
“Anyways, are you talking to him because you want free drugs?”
“What? No, I have never done drugs in my life.” you answered truthfully.
“Are you sure about that? You seem-”
“Hey ash?” faye interrupted.
“What” he rolled his eyes looking at her. Jesus it seems like he doesn’t like her or something.
“I was taking out the trash and I saw this guy parked in the alley, it seemed like he was watching the house or something.”
“Shit.” he whispered under his breath. “Imma go check the camera. Be right back.” he said to you.
5 minutes later you saw ash go out the back door with a gun in his hand. “Fez what’s going on.” you watched as he grabbed a rope and a chair.
“Nothing don’t worry about it.”
What the fuck? How am i not supposed to worry they are acting like they finna kill somebody.
“Sit in the chair now.” you looked up to see ash had come back with a gun to Cal jacobs head.
“What the actual fuck.” you whispered.
“You know him?” Faye asked.
“Yea.” you watch ash tied Cal’s hands with the rope. Fez sat at on the edge of the couch looking at cal.
“So first you show up to my job asking weird ass questions. Now you show up to my house. The fuck are you doing man?”
“Your free to call the cops.“ Cal said calmly.
“What the fuck man? Why would i call the cops, what the fuck is up with your family are you all just crazy?”
“You beat up my son.”
“Well that’s because your sons a bitch and he deserved it.” fez said. You tried to not laugh but a little giggle escaped your lips. Fez, cal and ash turned to you.
“y/n? What are you doing here?” you were about to say hey to him but fez said something before you could.
“Naw bro dont talk her to her, i want answers why the fuck are you at my house.” Cal stayed quiet. Ash started hitting him with the gun until his head was bleeding.
“Stop”
“Im not fucking stopped answer the questions or imma keep doing it.” When Cal didn’t speak again, ash hit him over and over again. Fez had to say something for him to stop
“Alright ash chill, i think he got it.”
“Listen, I just want the disc.” he said.
“What disc?” Fez asked, confused.
“I know your friend and the blonde are trying to get me in jail and now they are coming after my son.” “What? Are you talking about jewel?”
“Listen, I didn’t know she was 17?”
“You had sex with jules?” fez asked shocked but clearly cal didn’t get that this was fez first time hearing about this because he kept going.
“Can i just get the disc of jules and i please.”
“Your record that shit?”
“I didn’t know”
“You didn’t know you were recording? Who told you i gave a fuck about this anyways?”
“My son” cal looked down.
“Your son? The ones that are in love with jewel.”
“Imma just go.” Cal got up but ash made him sit back down.
“Let him go ash but i swear to god if you come back to my house we are going to have a problem.
“ i won’t bother you again.“ Cal walked out of the house with blood dripping down his face. Ash said he was done with tutoring today and went back to his room. And Faye disappeared to go do something again. Fez hopped over the couch to sit next to you.
“You don’t look surprised, did you know?” he asked you.
“Yea, i basically know everything.” you told him.
“For real how?”
“By being the quiet friend. Nobody in my friend group can keep a secret. They at least have to tell one person , so I end up knowing everything because they know I wont tell.”
“You know who has the tape too?”
“Yea” you looked at fez to see he had an emotionless look on his face, hes so hard to read. “You okay?”
“Naw, still kinda shocked about what happened. Tell me one of your theories to cheer me up.”
You tried to think of one but one couldn’t come to mind. “I don’t know, I can’t think of one.”
“Tell me about yourself then.”
“Umm.. I like to cook and bake.”
“That’s whats up what do you make?”
“Mostly lasagna and cakes or cookies.”
“Shit i like that stuff, maybe you can cook for me and ash.”
“Of course.”
“Yo, you wanna watch that show about that marriage shit right now.” he smiled.
“Let’s do it.”

Teacher Appreciation Part 3 ~ Nathan MacKinnon (4+1)
Here it is! Part 3 (and last) of Teacher Appreciation! I'm so thankful for all the comments and love, thank you to everyone who has read it! Let me know what you think of this part! Shout out to @cozynightscandle for asking about a part 3 and providing some inspo, as well as @avsfans95 for always letting me bounce ideas off of her!
Also, sixth grade is still considered elementary in my district, so I kept it that way for purposes of the story!
Summary: The four times Nate surprised your class, and the one time your class and Nate surprised you.
Warning: mentions of the pandemic (not the main focus, just touching on how teaching was during that time as I spent the beginning of my teaching career pretty much online)

Your first year of teaching sixth grade was actually more successful than you would have thought. It was a different type of bond you were able to build with your students. Instead of having to tie shoes and clean boo-boos, you became someone that your students would come talk to if they were too stressed. They told you their dreams and aspirations; all the while still relying on you to calm their fears when math became overwhelming. Long story short, you absolutely loved it. Yes, some were taller than you, and on more than one occasion Nate would lose you among your kiddos when he would come to help in your classroom. Still, you built connections that you didn’t think were possible after always working with the younger kids. Nate loved seeing how excited you were, and loved when you would come home and tell him all about what your kids did that day.
And yes, home was now with Nate. During a bad snow one evening, you were panicking about having to get back home so you could change just in case school wasn’t cancelled for the next day. Nate, off-handedly, suggested that it would be easier for you to just move in, since you were over all the time anyways; his office half taken over with craft supplies already. You agreed with a sarcastic laugh, thinking he was joking, but woke up to him clearing out space in his closet. During winter break, you officially moved in. Now it was your second year in sixth grade, and a handful of your kiddos from third grade when you first met Nate were back in your class. And if you thought third graders were intrusive, they just got worse, especially when they already knew you.

“Miss Y/L/N, could you not give us homework tonight? I have practice,” Steven asked right after the morning bell rang and you were checking over last nights homework.
“Steven, I already don’t give you much homework and you have time to usually start it in class. Use your time wisely kiddo,” you said, stamping his paper as he groaned.
“But Miss Y/L/N…”
“But nothing, do your work,” you responded, making a face at him that caused the young boy to huff out a laugh. You had only been in school for a month now, but have been having a great time with your kids. Today, the Avs would be on campus talking with the fifth graders as they do every year about the presidential fitness test. Last week when your students caught word that the hockey team would be there, half of them pleaded with you to get the team into your classroom. Little did they know that you had a different surprise planned for them. During recess, Nate ran into your classroom as you gathered your PE supplies. “Do they know yet?” he asked, giving you a quick kiss and taking the kickball from your hands.
“Not a clue,” you giggled as he retreated to his teammates and you went to get your kids from line. Leading your students into the gym as you had PE after recess, they all started to shout and jump around when they saw who was joining them. You waved as Nate came into view, accompanied by the entire Avs’ line up.
“Hi Teacher Dad!” Alexa squealed over the commotion, and you swore your face was beat red. She hadn’t used that term yet this year and to be frank, you had forgotten about it.
“Alexa,” you started as the guys laughed.
“Hi Alexa,” Nate called out, smiling at you with a look that told you not to get upset. Looking back at the girl, she sent you a sweet smile and you just shook your head with a laugh.
“You know better,” you said and she giggled. “Alright, ladies and gentleman gather around please! Today we will be continuing our game of….”
“Kickball basketball!” your kids yelled, running off to their teams and taking their positions. “Wait wait wait. Before we get started, would someone kindly explain the rules of kickball basketball to our newcomers,” you gestured towards the Avs who looked completely confused at your fusion of the two ballgames.
“So one team pitches the ball like in kickball and the other team has to kick it. Then they skip around the perimeter of the basketball court and have to make it back home before the other team can get the ball and shoot it through the hoop,” Justin explained.
“There are also no bases so you can’t stop. You aren’t safe anywhere unless you make it back home,” Kalel added.
“This is really a game now?” Andre asked you and you nodded.
“And it is our favorite. So I have my kids playing odds vs evens based on their class numbers. I think you all can split up that way too,” you said, gesturing for the guys to join their respective teams. Nate watched as you settled the argument about who the pitcher would be between three of your boys, not handing the ball over till they figured it out diplomatically.
“She wasn’t joking when she said her students were taller than her, was she?” Andre laughed from beside Nate as he chuckled along. You stood on the sideline, cheering and calling out foul balls for the duration of the game. The Avs took it easy with your kids, just laughing and having fun. Your kids were ecstatic, being able to call some of the guys their teammates; getting high fives and being cheered on by the pro athletes. You PE time was about to end within another five minutes as the teams switched sides after the evens got three outs on the odds. You saw Isaac hand Nate the ball to make him pitcher, smiling as Nate gently rolled the ball to Kiely. After she kicked it and almost made it around, Steven was up.
“Miss Y/L/N, will you kick?” he called out to you, and your class started to cheer. It was no secret that you played PE games with your kids from time to time. A chant of your name was started as you laughed and put your keys and walkie talkie off to the side.
“Teacher Mom vs Teacher Dad, yaaaasss,” Alexa cheered and you shook your head.
“Alexa,” you called and she smiled sheepishly.
“Sorry!” Nate laughed and turned his attention back to you. He rolled the ball slower than you knew he could, but that didn’t stop you from kicking it with all your might. Your kids (and the Avs) on your side were cheering loudly as you skipped around the perimeter laughing, coming back to home a second before Tyson got the ball in the net.
“Evens win!” you called out, then made your two teams shake hands with each other and collect the equipment as it was time to head back to class. As your class was saying goodbye to the Avs, Nate walked over and bumped his arm into you.
“You know I went easy on you right?” he asked, ever the competitor. You laughed and smiled sweetly at him.
“You know you shouldn’t have, right?” you shot back, laughing as he rolled his eyes. “I’ll see you back home. Love you,” you whispered.
“Love you,” he whispered back. You gathered your class and ushered them out of the gym and back to your classroom. The rest of the day went well as your class was floating on cloud nine from their interaction with the Avs.

One Thursday afternoon before Winter break, you came home with several bags of potatoes in hand. Opening your apartment door, you walked in on Mikko and Andre watching a basketball game with Nate; your boyfriend automatically getting up and taking a few bags from you. “What’s with all the potatoes?” Mikko asked.
“We’re mummifying them tomorrow in class,” you answered casually, walking off into the kitchen as Nate sat back down on the couch while Mikko and Andre looked entirely confused.
“Did what she just said not phase you at all?” Andre asked Nate and the center shrugged.
“I’ve been hearing about this project for like 3 months now,” he said casually. You walked back into the room and sat on the edge of the couch near Nate.
“Mummifying potatoes?” Mikko asked, looking slightly horrified.
“Yeah, we’re learning about ancient Egypt. We’re going to wrap the potatoes in foil and decorate them with plastic jewels like they were death masks,” you explained in an excited tone.
“How?” Andre asked, now completely more interested in what you were talking about than the game.
“I’m going to cut large slices of potatoes so ever student gets a handful. Then we’re going to pour baking soda and salt on them to dry it out like the Ancient Egyptians would dry a body. Then we are going to wrap it in tin foil like a sarcophagus and decorate. When we get back from winter break, we’ll ‘excavate’ them by unwrapping the potatoes and see how we did with drying it out, documenting changes and what we see like archaeologists,” you explained. Nate smiled up at you as Mikko and Andre tried to figure out if the project seemed cool or crazy. They settled on cool.
“Can we help?” Mikko asked and you laughed.
“Nate’s coming in tomorrow to help. The two of you can come with him if you want,” you said and the guys nodded.
The following day, Alexa answered the door when there was a knock as you were starting to explain to your class what they were going to do with their potatoes. “Teacher Dad! You’re here!” She said quietly as to not get in trouble by you. Nate chuckled, nodding as Mikko and Andre planned on chirping him later for how comfortable your class was with him if they were calling him teacher dad like it was no big deal. It was one thing when they were younger, but took on a different comfort level as they were older.
The guys helped you pass out the materials and made their own sarcophagi as you circled the classroom making sure your students were staying on task and not just goofy around. A few of your sports obsessed boys clung to the hockey players and copied their every move, decorating their sarcophagi to look similar. You laughed, passing by Nate’s and adding an extra jewel because you wanted to make it more sparkly. He narrowed his eyes at you, but let you keep adding jewels until you were content and circled the class again to see how your kids were coming along. Mikko and Andre snickered; only you would be allowed to touch anything of Nate’s and not have him explode on you.
“Mr. MacKinnon?” two of your girls came up to Nate with little giggles. He looked at them confused, but answered.
“Yes?”
“You and Miss Y/L/N are dating right? Like you’re here all the time. Ever since third grade,” Audrey asked in a hushed tone while Cierra continued to giggle. Nate flushed, not sure how to answer them.
“You must really like her. Like, marry her like her,” Cierra added as Nate cleared his throat and his teammates started to laugh. Before Nate could formulate a sentence though, you were calling for your class’s attention, letting them know it was time to put their ‘sarcophagi’ on the back counter and clean up for the day. As you circled the room again, you noticed Nate looking a bit red with the two forwards trying to hold in their laughter.
“You okay?” you asked him quietly.
“Fine,” he shot you a smile, and though you were skeptical, you returned to your class.
“Yeah Teacher Dad Mackinnon. When are you going to make her Teacher Mom MacKinnon?” Andre chirped quietly, muttering a sorry when you shot him a look having heard his voice, but not what he said. Truth be told, Nate had already thought about it and had plans for an off-season proposal.

Campus was quiet on a Thursday after school. You had made copies and stapled a few packets together, graded math tests, and prepared a social studies test for Friday. One task led to another and you kept walking around your room hanging up new student work. Sitting down, you started working on going through your students work from the week to check for understanding and participation. As you were stamping and writing comments, you heard your door being unlocked. Figuring it was the custodian, you kept on plugging away. “Hi Ms. Kay,” you said cheerfully, before looking up and jumping in shock. “What are you doing here?” Nate looked at you incredulously.
“Why are you still here? Y/N I thought something happened to you,” he walked over to you and pulled you up and into a hug. Was he worried about you?
“No, I was just getting some things done. How did you get in?” you asked as he let go of you.
“Ms. Kay gave me your room key when I ran into her in the parking lot. Why the hell are you still here? I tried to call you like ten times,” Nate said, obviously worried, but you still weren’t sure why.
“I have bad reception in my room, I’m sorry babe,” you said, grabbing his hand. “Why are you so worried. Is everything okay?”
“You don’t know what time it is, do you?” Nate asked you, laughing humorlessly.
“It’s only like 4:30,” you said, looking at him confused.
“Hun, no,” he said, showing you his watch. “It’s 7:30.”
“Oh my gosh Nate. I am so sorry! One thing led to another and I wasn’t paying attention and…” you rambled.
“Hey it’s okay,” Nate tilted your chin up with his forefinger. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”
“I’m sorry,” you whispered, realizing you had worried him. Nate smiled softly at you, giving you a quick kiss before grabbing your backpack and keys.
“Let’s go home,” he tugged on your hand but looked back when you didn’t budge.
“Nate I have so much to do. I don’t know how I got behind this week but I need to get all their work together and sent home in their Friday folders,” you rushed out, starting to feel overwhelmed that you didn’t have all the time you thought you had.
“Then they can get them on Monday. You need to come home and get some rest,” Nate tried to reason patiently with you.
“Nate, they’re called Friday folders for a reason,” you said.
“And I’m sure if they get them late one week no one will riot,” he responded.
“You don’t know that.”
“I know your class adores you as their teacher. Now let’s go home and you can finish them tomorrow if you’re going to stress over it,” Nate started to pull you along.
“But…”
“Leave it.”
The next day you were running on pure caffeine and more thankful than usual that it was Friday. The unfortunate part, your schedule had no room for you to work on your Friday folders. Figuring you would skip lunch to get it done, you went about your day as usual. You were helping Noah with dividing fractions when there was a knock at your door. As you continued to help your student, Justin got up and answered. “Mr. MacKinnon!” he yelled and your head shot up.
“Justin, that is not an appropriate classroom tone,” you said as your class was all trying to get a better look at Nate. “Get back to work you guys. I’ll be right back Noah. Try number 12 by yourself,” you suggested, getting up and walking over to Nate. “Everything okay?”
“What do you want me to file?” he asked.
“What?” you asked, confused by his question.
“You were stressed yesterday about your Friday folders and they still look empty,” Nate gestured toward your hanging files on the wall with all the student’s folders in them. “I figured I would stop by to see if you needed help.”
“Are you my room mom for the day?” you laughed quietly and Nate nodded. Checking the time, you shook your head.
“You just got out of practice. I appreciate the help, but I’m sure your tired. Go home and rest,” you said, feeling guilty that you had worried him yesterday.
“I’m good. Where should I start?” he smiled.
“Please let him stay Miss Y/L/N. I love making my brother mad that Nathan MacKinnon spends time in our class instead of his,” Isaac said from behind you. Turning around, you laughed looking up at the tall sixth grader.
“Why are you up?” you asked.
“Oh! I need help on number 15,” he showed you his messy paper.
“We’ll go over everything right now. But did you flip the second fraction and then simplify?”
“No….”
“Ohhh, I would start there,” you smiled.
“Yes ma’am,” Isaac saluted you and went back to his desk. You laughed softly, shaking your head and turning back to Nate. “If you’re sure you want to stay, their work is all ready to be filed and it’s sitting on my desk. Thank you.” You smiled at Nate with a sigh of relief. He squeezed your arm reassuringly for a moment, then walked over to your desk to grab the stack he needed. “Alright my crazies, let’s go over our keep, change, flip.”

This wasn’t actually happening, was it? There’s no way this is real. These thoughts swirled in your head on a Friday in March. The school was closing for an extended spring break due to an outbreak. COVID-19 was closing your school. Nate’s season was just postponed, and now school. You went home in tears that day, not knowing what was going to happen next.
Over the next two weeks, you prepared Google Classrooms and work to do digitally as your school year was called. A month in a half online, then summer. Nate was getting agitated, not knowing what to expect with hockey and also worried for the both of you in the city. “I’m getting us a flight to Coal Harbor before they close the borders,” he mentioned one night during dinner.
“Nate, I can’t leave. What if I need to get back into my class? What if my kids need me?” you asked, your anxiety heightening.
“Then I’ll find a way to get you back here as quickly as possible. I just think we would be safer at home with more space, not an apartment in the middle of Denver,” he explained.
“I don’t have anything to teach there. At least here I have a white board, I can’t take that on a plane,” you rambled. Nate reached across the table and grabbed your hand.
“I already ordered you one for there. It’s being delivered tomorrow. You can turn one of the spare rooms into your classroom, or you can take my office and I can do things somewhere else. I just want to go back home, and I’m not comfortable leaving you here,” he said, wiping a tear off your cheek with the pad of his thumb. You weren’t sure if you were stress crying or worried crying at this point. He did have a point though, and you were online for the remainder of the school year. You nodded.
“Okay.”

Three weeks later you were laughing at a story one of your kids was telling you over Google Meet. You had to give it to your class, they were very resilient and working hard to finish the year off. Deciding that you wanted to do something fun for PE, you roped Nate into a low-key training session. You told your kids to come to class that morning in their favorite sports gear and be ready to move. Opening your meet, you appeared in your MacKinnon jersey. “Of course you have a MacKinnon jersey Miss Y/L/N,” Cierra said laughing. You looked at her shocked.
“Who else should I have?” you laughed with her.
“Crosby,” Kiely unmuted herself quickly.
“I heard that Kiely!” Nate yelled from somewhere in the hallway. Your kids started laughing and you smiled at them, thankful to have them all healthy and safe in front of you, even if it was through a screen.
“Okie dokie kiddies. I have something fun planned for us today. Are you all ready to meet our special guests?”
“We know Mr. MacKinnon is there Miss Y/L/N,” Steven unmuted himself and laughed.
“I said guests as in plural Steven. But if you don’t want to meet him, I guess I can just send him back home,” you shrugged, starting to turn around in your chair.
“No no no! Steven stop talking. Miss Y/L/N, who is it?” Noah called, practically bouncing out of his seat.
“Hey, be nice Noah. Alright ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. I would like you to meet your PE coaches for the day. Mr. MacKinnon you already know, but say hi!” your kids all unmuted themselves to say hello to Nate as he walked into the room. “Okay now, drumroll please! Your other PE coach, Mr. Crosby!” The screams of your kids had you pressing ‘mute all’ really quick. If only there was a mute all in real life. Sidney waved at your kids while Nate laughed as Kalel fell out of his chair in excitement. You saw parents running into the rooms of your students, all waving and excited themselves once they saw there was no danger.
After a 30 minute workout with Nate and Sid demonstrating and counting for the kids, you let them have time to talk with your class. They had been working so hard, you figured some time missed from learning to enjoy themselves in this hectic experience was needed. Friday was half day for you online, so after a math review and reading time, you said goodbye to your kids as they all started to log off. Waving till the last one left, you sunk back into your chair as you ended the call. Nate came into the room and placed a kiss on your forehead. “Thank you for doing that today,” you said, smiling at your boyfriend.
“Of course. I would do anything for you, you know that,” he said simply and you smiled. “I am mad at Kiely though. Why should you have a Crosby jersey?” Nate made a face and you giggled.
“She just wants what’s best for her teacher,” you teased him, leaning forward to give him a quick kiss and then standing up to head to the kitchen for a snack.
“Yeah sure,” Nate said, then comprehended what you just said. “Hey!” he ran after you, circling his arms around your waist while you laughed and tried to get away from him.

It was the last day of school for the year, and you were watching a movie with your kids on Google Meet. After the meet you talked about the summer and what they hoped to do if they could. You had them also talk about what their favorite part of the year was and what they look forward to in Junior High. “You guys know that I will always be here for you. I know you will all be awesome seventh graders and I can’t wait to run into you all at the grocery store one day and have you all tell me about it,” you said, starting to get choked up with having to say goodbye to them after such an insane year.
“I’m gonna miss you Teacher Mom,” Alexa unmuted herself and you almost broke. Even though you would get after her when she would call Nate Teacher Dad, you loved being her Teacher Mom.
“You’re going to make me cry,” you said, tearing up and laughing as your kids all started to unmute themselves to tell you not to cry.
“Miss Y/L/N, can you call Mr. MacKinnon into the room please?” Kiely asked softly and you nodded, figuring she wanted to say goodbye to him too. You called for Nate, laughing at a joke one of your boys told you while he walked into the room. Seeing him through the camera, you turned around in shock.
“What’s all of this?” you said to all the little presents and cards Nate was holding and placing down on the desk beside your laptop.
“We all wanted to get you something, so my mom emailed Mr. MacKinnon to plan how to get it to you!” Isaac shouted.
“Email?” you asked Nate, not knowing they had his email.
“Instagram,” he whispered. Your actual room mom DMed Nate.
“You guys! This is too much! Thank you,” you gushed, looking at the outpour of love from your class. “You’re all the best and I love you guys,” you said, not helping the tears that came to your eyes.
“Love you Miss Y/L/N!” a few of your girls shouted while your boys just laughed.
“There is also one more thing,” Nate muttered to you, rubbing the back of his neck. “You guys ready?” he asked your class, and you could hear the nerves in his voice. Why was he nervous? Your kids all nodded, big smiles on most of their faces. “Okay, hold them up.” You watched the screen as your kids held up colorful posters with different sayings on them. Confused, you started to read them.
“Teacher Mom + Teacher Dad”
“Congratulations!”
“Mrs. MacKinnon’s Class!”
“Say yes!” … Kiely’s had a picture of a ring on it. Your jaw dropped as your heartbeat sped up.
“Turn around!” Alexa yelled through the speakers. Spinning in your chair, you came face to face with Nate kneeling in front of you, a beautiful ring in his hands.
“I had a whole speech planned out, but I’m forgetting it now,” he chuckled and you giggled with him, more tears filling your eyes. “I know this time has been crazy, and I didn’t plan on purposing to you during a pandemic, but I didn’t want to wait any longer. I love you Y/N Y/M/N Y/L/N. I’m thankful everyday that those kids brought you to the rink that day three years ago. I love having crafts all over my desk because you need more space, and I love being Teacher Dad; more than I thought I would. But most of all, I love the peace and steadiness you bring to my life, even if you’re running in circles yourself. I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?”
“Say yes!” shouts came from behind you on the computer screen. You smiled, nodding your head.
“Yes, of course,” you said, tears falling. Nate smiled at you and slipped the ring on your finger, standing up and bringing you into a hug. He wanted to kiss you, but knew you would get mad that it was in front of your class. Cheers erupted from the meet, and you turned to see not only your students but their parents also. Laughing, you showed your class your ring quickly.
“Yay Teacher Mom and Teacher Dad!” Alexa shouted and you couldn’t get mad at her this time. After they all calmed down and you said your final goodbyes, you ended the meet and found Nate laying on the couch. You lowered yourself on top of him and kissed him.
“How did you get them to do that?” you asked, referring to the signs.
“When Isaac’s mom messaged me, I brought it up. She coordinated it all with the other parents,” he said and you laughed.
“I love you,” you said, kissing him again, Nate wrapped his arms around you, holding you close.
“I love you too, future Mrs. MacKinnon.”

99 Perspectives on a Single Love Story #54
A/N: The Story of Kurt and Blaine told through the eyes of everyone else but them. Each chapter is a different perspective in the ongoing tale of their love story.
I started something like this a while back - and now I’m taking the idea and really running with it. Each chapter is a ficlet of a different character at a different point in Kurt and Blaine’s life - documenting their love story. This starts in Audition, and each chapter will be paired with a different episode until reaching Dreams Come True.

A/N:  When I first started this project, I sat down and figured out who I wanted to go with each episode. This one had me stumped for along time. I mean - Burt I'm using elsewhere. :) And there isn't really anyone else in their story. So, I based this off a real life event that happened to my brother. He actually did propose to his wife at a skating rink - and these photographers, who were waiting for friends of theirs, caught their proposal on film by accident. An interesting serendipitous moment. And so, I had my inspiration for this chapter. Thanks so much for reading guys - happier times are afoot!

The Photographers (Glee, Actually) 
“This looks like a good spot,” Nate drops the equipment down next to him.  Shouldn’t take them long to get ready, and their view of the park is pretty spectacular.   Nate takes out his camera, putting it together, and aiming it at the skaters on the rink.  
“Doesn’t this job feel a little, I don’t know, weird?” His good friend Carla says as she helps him set up.  “I mean, normally both parties know when they’re being filmed.”  
“Hey, the dude wants his proposal on camera, but it’s supposed to be a surprise,” Nate argues.  “Besides, he paid double my normal rate, so we can’t really fuck this up.  I gotta pay rent.”  
“But you haven’t even met this guy,” Carla argues.  Nate knows she’s more annoyed that he dragged her out in the cold on Christmas Eve.  But it’s not like either of them had any actual plans outside of their annual turkey and stuffing dinner they get at the diner every year.  “How do you know we aren’t secretly working for the government?  Or the mafia?  Remember the Palmer job.” 
He winces at the memory.  “Look, the guy promised me he’s legit.  Just some dude excited to be finally asking his boyfriend to marry him.” 
“The gays don’t usually do this in public, you know,” Carla eyes him suspiciously.  “Seems fishy.” 
Nate side-eyes her before looking through his camera - scanning the crowd for his target.  A job’s a job, he figures.  He doesn’t care if the Queen of England decides to pose nude on top of a horse.  If it pays, he’ll take the job.  And right now, his job is to find a dark haired man who plans on proposing to his boyfriend in the middle of the ice rink.  Apparently, it had been their first date, and he’s trying to recreate that.  
Nate scans the crowd, not really finding anyone who fits the descriptions he had been given.  Until he sees a couple of younger guys, holding hands, skating together, laughing and giggling as they did so.  They’re a bit young - considering the message Nate was given said that the couple had been together for nearly a decade.  Hell, maybe they met as kids.  
Time passes slowly.  Carla shivers next to him, throwing him skeptical looks.  Nate follows the kids with his camera for a bit, taking a few candid photos mostly to fill the time.  And hey, maybe the couple will give them more money if they like them.  As midnight approaches, Nate wonders if this is even going to happen.  Maybe it is all a joke.  Or maybe the dude is chickening out?  Based on the ecstatic looks on the kids’ faces, he doesn’t see anything to indicate that they aren’t happy together.  
Eventually, the darker haired one of the two starts being fancy with his ice dancing skills, twirling around the other one.  There’s a bit of laughter as he eventually falls to his knees.  Thinking this might be it, Nate readys his camera - taking shot after shot as the kid looks up to the other one.  It’s a fast moment - he’s not entirely sure what is going on as the two of them seem to be talking.  He doesn’t see a ring, nor is there any jumping for joy moment, but the kid on his knees is helped up by the other one.  
And then something strange happens.  The lighter haired one sees him.  Looks directly at him with narrowed eyes.  
“Oh no,” Nate mumbles.  He shakes Carla who is sitting on the ground half asleep.  “I think they saw us.” 
“Isn’t that part of the plan?” Carla grumbles.  
“Based on their faces - I don’t think so,” Nate says.  
Nate barely has time to put away his camera before the boys come to the edge of the rink.  
“Hey!” the lighter haired one yells.  “Hey, you with the camera!” 
“Whadda ya want?” Carla snarls.  
Nate backs her down.  “Can we help you?” 
“Yes, I want to know why you were taking photos of us.”  The kid demands.  
The darker-haired one puts a hand on his arm.  “Kurt, calm down, I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation.” 
Kurt, however, looks incredibly upset.  “No - these guys were taking photos of us.” 
Nate gives them a confused look.  The darker-haired one doesn’t seem to know what’s going on either, but at least he’s more polite about it.  “Look, we were paid to alright?  You are Alex?  The guy who hired me to take photos of his proposal?  Said in your letter you’d be proposing to your boyfriend in the spot of their first date around midnight on Christmas eve.  Well, here I am - doing what you asked.”  
The darker-haired one, smirks.  “I’m so sorry, that is not us.” 
Shit.  
The lighter-haired one, Kurt, isn’t backing down either.  “Don’t you tihnk we’re entirely too young to be getting married?” 
“It was an honest mistake, Kurt.” 
“We’re not even a couple, Blaine.” 
“Well, the two of you fooled me,” Nate grumbles.  
Carla’s standing behind him - howling with laughter.  
“Well, I’m sorry for your trouble,” the darker-haired one, Blaine, says. “Maybe that’s your couple there?” 
He points across the rink to a couple of middle-aged guys with their arms around each other, both of whom look way closer to the descriptions given than these kids.  
SHIIIIIIIIITT!!!
 “Uh, thanks kid.  Sorry for the trouble.” 
Later… 
After he thankfully is able to save his own ass by capturing the proposal he’d been paid for, the darker-haired kid from early approaches him, this time alone. 
“Excuse me, I’m sorry to trouble you, but can I talk to you for a minute?” he asks.  
“Sure kid,” Nate says as he packs his equipment up.  Carla’s busy in the bathroom, so he has a few minutes anyway.  “What?” 
“Um, I know this is weird, or whatever, but did you actually take photos of us?” 
“Yeah - I’ll make sure they don’t get on the net or anything,” Nate says.  What a waste of film.  
The kid bounces in his place.  “No, actually, I was wondering if I could have them.  I’d be happy to pay you for them - I have a couple hundred bucks I could give you.” 
Nate eyes the kid suspiciously.  “Really?” 
The kid nods eagerly.  
“What the hell, why not?” 
“Thank you so much,” the kid says, his eyes wide and happy.  
There’s a quick exchange of information.  It’s been a weird night, but at least it’s not a total loss.  
The kid, however, lingers just a bit once they wrap up business.  
“What?” Nate asks.  
“I know this is a weird thing to ask but -- did we really look like a couple out there?” 
Nate gives a hearty laugh.  “Yeah.” 
The kid bites his lip, trying to downplay his excitement.  “Thank you.  Thank you so much.” 
“Merry Christmas, kid.”  Nate says.  I hope whatever it is works out for you.  Now, to find Carla and get out of this frickin’ cold…

Hiccup! Hiccup!
Warnings: lots and LOTS of fluff. Like, your teeth with probably be rotten by the end.
Pairing: Nathaniel (Nate) Archibald x reader
AN: this is just something I came up with earlier today and finished pretty quickly, I’m actually super happy with how it turned out? That’s a surprise to me lol. Hope you guys like it as much as I (think) I do 🤗.
You swiftly move around the crowd of Manhattans elite who are in the middle of some sort of gossip and walk to the table holding refreshments.
With a small sigh of stress, you grab a glass of water, chugging it back until the glass is empty.
Nate Archibald was smitten with you. Absolutely positively smitten. The two of you had been on a few dates after school hours and on weekends and holidays and suddenly you were absolutely inseparable. But this party was the first time you were meeting any of his friends from the Upper East Side other than Serena, who was always incredibly kind to you.
When Nate invited you to join him, you’d been absolutely ecstatic at first. But when you’d met all of his friends, the most they did was look you over up and down and had their noses turned up in disgust as they surveyed your outfit.
The girls had whispered, boys had snickered and the adults were all far too busy with their own problems to notice or care how their children were acting.
Even Nates own mother had absolutely no interest in meeting you, the person her son was clearly falling quickly in love with, after hearing all everyone seemed to have to say about you or where you’d come from.
It all felt like way too much at once for your laidback taste.
Once you’d excused yourself, you’d overheard Nate scolding them in a hiss, clearly angry with how they chose to treat his date.
You felt honoured but also like a burden, like he felt he was obligated to protect you and your feelings instead of actually wanting to.
You’d hidden outside for a while but then people decided it was a perfect time for a smoke break and the air began to reek of cigarettes and god knows what else so you slipped inside just before you let out a cough at the stench.
Watching the group nervously, you guzzle down another glass of water.
“Hey! I was just looking for you.” Nate says as he joins you at the table with one of his huge grins.
You smile back, ignoring the feeling of discomfort at where you were.
“Well here I am! You found -hiccup- me.” You say, promptly interrupted by a loud and embarrassing hiccup. You feel your cheeks warm in embarrassment, smiling apologetically.
A series of more hiccups escape your lips over the next few minutes, making you quickly smack a hand over your mouth.
“I’m so sorry Nate.” You mutter between jolts, tears not only from embarrassment but also from your eyes watering everytime your body makes a sudden movement with your hiccups.
“Hey, hey look at me.” He instructs, moving in front of you so he’s directly in your line of vision.
You reluctantly do as he says, meeting his eyes with your own.
“I’m -hiccup- ruining your fun.” You sigh, frowning down at your shoes in shame.
“No you aren’t. These parties are always a bore anyways. You’re what’s making it fun y/n.” He tells you, holding your hands in his own to try and keep them steady.
“Are you -hiccup- are you sure?” You ask, searching his face for any tell of a lie or fib. He nods his head, not breaking eye contact with you.
You could feel the judgmental eyes of all the teen heiresses surrounding you narrowed on the two of you, their noses crinkling even more in disgust at every hiccup.
“It’s not gonna -hiccup- it won’t embarrass -hiccup- you?” You ask, looking at him sceptically.
“I promise it won’t.” He says with a small chuckle when you smile up at him only to be stopped by yet another hiccup.
“It’s not -hiccup- funny!” You groan, leaning into him a little.
“No no! It’s uh... it’s not-“ He says unconvincingly, notably trying hard not to crack up. “It’s adorable.” He adds, placing a kiss on your forehead.
“It’s -hiccup- annoying.” You pout, crossing your arms over your chest with a hiccup covered sigh.
“Awwww.” He teases, smiling at you.
His facial expression changes suddenly, a sign that an idea is forming.
“I’ll be right back.” He promises, walking off without another word.
Before you have the chance to follow, Serena comes walking up to you with a friendly smile, tugging a brunette along with her by the arm.
“Hey!” She squeals, pulling you in for a hug of her own. You giggle between hiccups, smiling back as best you can.
“Blair, this is y/n. She’s/he’s/they’re here with Nate. You knew that right?” She asks, looking to the girl next to her for answers.
“Yeah. Hi.” The girl mutters, reluctantly offering you a hand to shake. You take it, shaking it out of curtesy but feeling overly intimidated the entire time.
“Nice to -hiccup- meet you.” You murmur, cursing the sounds escaping your lips for the embarrassment.
She gives you one last one over, nose high in the air before walking off to join yet another group.
“I’m sorry y/n. They’re all kind of... judgmental sometimes. But you’ll fit right in! At least when those hiccups go away.” Serena sighs, giggling a little as you nod with another hiccup.
She gives you a squeeze on the shoulder in sympathy and wanders off to join the group of private school girls chattering away, leaving you to your own devices.
“I’m back.” A voice says behind you as an arm wraps around your waist.
“ -hiccup- hi.” You breath, your ribs starting to ache from the amount of bouncing around your body was doing due to the hiccups.
“Here. Swallow this.” Nate says as he moves in front of you.
He holds out a literal silver teaspoon filled with sugar.
“Nate-“ You start but are quickly interrupted by yet another one.
“You know what, gimme -hiccup- it.” You grumble, grabbing the spoon and shoving it in your mouth.
You wait a moment and just as you think it actually worked, another one bursts through your mouth.
“Damnit.” You curse under your breath.
Nate sighs, looking at you with his brows furrowed in concentration.
“Oh! Try swallowing three times fast.” He offers.
You do just that, waiting yet again and groan in annoyance as it happens again.
The course of the night is spent with Nate trying, with no success, to get rid of your hiccups. You groan and moan whenever you find out they aren’t gone, almost whining like a child by the time the party is winding down. Since it’s at his friend Blair’s penthouse, the two of you are able to stay a little longer.
“It’s no use, they’re never -hiccup- going away.” You sulk, looking up to him with shining puppy dog eyes.
“Wait. I have one more idea.” He says with a small smile grazing his lips.
Suddenly he drops the crystal glass of water in his hand, letting it shatter on the floor.
“What are you-“ You start to hiss but you’re interrupted, this time not by your hiccups.
“Was that one of my mothers crystal glasses?! Those are very expensive and vintage!” A shrill voice shrieks, moving closer to where the two of you are.
“Y/n did it!” Nate calls out. You look at him in shock, eyes wide in fear and confusion.
As the angry girl storms closer and closer towards the kitchen, Nate grabs your hand in his again, pulling you out another door you’d hardly noticed until then and towards the elevator.
“Bye Dorota.” Nate whispers to the kind but now very confused maid as you move quickly.
“But- but Mr Nate!” She calls after him, but the two of you are already in the elevator and on your way down.
“Don’t take offense to this, but your friends are terrifying.” You breath, looking at him with a small grin.
He chuckles nodding in agreement.
“What was that for though Archibald? I thought you liked me living?” You ask, raising an annoyed eyebrow at him.
“I absolutely do. But I also like you happy and hiccupless so.” He says with an innocent shrug.
“You- you were about to get me killed just to get rid of my hiccups?” You cry, blinking at him.
“Well when you put it like that...” He says with another chuckle.
You roll your eyes, grabbing him by the shoulders and kissing him hard on the lips.
“You’re an idiot. But I love you.” You say with a bit of a laugh.
“I love -hiccup- you too.” He says, laughing as the sudden jolt becomes his.
You giggle a little behind your hand, still smiling over at him as you hear the higher pitched noise come from his mouth yet again. “Oops. I forgot- hiccups are sometimes contagious.” You tease, still giggling as he goes into a hiccup fit.
“Yeah, you seem to have forgotten that.” He scoffs with a grin, letting you know he isn’t actually upset.
“Don’t worry, you’re still absolute perfection to me. Even with the weird hiccups.” You grin as he tries to scoff again, unable to due to the hiccuping.
“Gee thanks, that means so -hiccup- much.” He says sarcastically, shaking his head at your giggle fit. “They really -hiccup- are -hiccup- annoying though.” He whines, pouting dramatically at you.
“Well, that just means it’s my turn to help cure you.” You promise nonchalantly with a shrug, smiling when you see his own teeth gleaming.
“I think I can probably -hiccup- live with that.” He laughs, pulling you into his side and hugging you tightly, making you giggle and squirm everytime his body moves with another hiccup.

Leverage Season 2, Episode 15, The Maltese Falcon Job, Audio Commentary Transcript
Dean: Hi I'm Dean Devlin, Executive Producer and Director of this episode.
John: I'm John Rogers, Executive producer and Writer.
Chris: I'm Chris Downey, Executive Producer, and this is the Maltese Falcon Job. Part two of our season two finale.
John: And this is a lot of fun, this was- this was born of an episode we never wrote. Just- we really wanted to just put them on their pins.
Chris: Right.
John: Just really knock them on their ass and so- were you handheld there? Handheld whenever there's a problem, right?
Dean: Well this is actually a 360 steadicam. And what we're trying to do is let- their entire world is spinning out of control, so we just wanted this just to keep spinning around. They don't know where they're gonna land.
John: This is a fast, hard reset. The second- the second half of the season finale last year, we kinda eased into it, we reset the locations.
Dean: Here we throw you right into it.
Chris: Right.
John: Yeah, you best be paying attention and you really see when, you know- they're the uber team. You know, you really need to put them onto the wall, and the FBI and Interpol in this situation, they're utterly lost. And Interpol, it was interesting, it was something we were saying last- cause it was Mark Sheppard credit in the last episode. We were looking for a villain, and the problem is we kept coming up with this recurring, separate villain. We’re like, ‘We've never met this person before, we don't care. The person you really want it to be is Sterling! But he's an investigator.’
Chris: ‘He's an insurance investigator, what does that have to do with insurance? We have to find a way to make this about insurance?’
John: Oh man, we killed ourselves.
Dean: Do you remember what you said John? The night-?
Chris: It was between you two, right?
John: It was us. I Skyped you at like 11 o’clock at night, you had come back from scouting-
Dean: And we were talking, and the idea came up, ‘What if we just made him interpol?’ Do you remember what you said?
John: No.
Dean: You said, ‘We are either coming up with the best idea we’ve ever come up with, or we’re both reall,y really tired right now.’
[Laughter]
Chris: And it was.
John: It was great.
Chris: As soon as I heard it, I said, ‘That’s a great idea.’ Because we needed to give him a wider mandate.
John: Yes, if we're gonna keep them as a recurring bad guy-
Chris: Great idea.
John: And what was great is, we already shot the episode that he was in before, so we had to go back and reshoot that ending.
Dean: Here's my favorite Tara bit, of her whole arc.
John: Oh, that's right.
Dean: And this man was actually our local assistant.
[Laughter]
Chris: That was AJ.
John: Yes. And a fine actor by the way.
Dean: He did a great job.
Chris: Oh look at this shot, look at this.
John: Look at just the look he's doing. Just a good 1960s Zero Mostel take there. Yeah, ‘Oops.’
[Laughter]
Chris: Mrs. Robinson.
Dean: Comedy frame.
John: Comedy frame. We got like nine takes of Christian reacting to that by the way.
Dean: And my favorite is they both originally put their heads back, and then only Christian’s head came back out again, but we didn't have time for that. 
Chris: Oh I love that.
John: We can't break for comedy too much here, cause you've got the momentum going. 
Dean: Yeah.
John: And you're like, you have to keep resetting - they are in trouble. This, by the way, great hack taught to us by Apollo Robbins.
Chris: Yes.
John: Our thief consultant took us through how you can get access to the hotel computer system through the back of your television.
Chris: Yes.
John: This is a real thing. Please don’t-
Dean: Please don't try this at home.
Chris: Please don’t try this.
John: Don't try this at home, but most hotels have internet enabled televisions now, and that allows you a backdoor into the- 
Chris: It's a good example, too, of our team is so good at what they do, that we always try and look for ways to take away all their tools and find a clever way they have to use whatever's around them to-
John: Yeah
Chris: -you know, get their information.
John: Yeah, and that's again, constrained in time, constrained in space.
Dean: And that little porno name here, we had to get clearance on. 
John: I know. We came up with so many pornos that were real. That we came up with the most ridiculous porno name, ‘Nope that's a real one, that’s a real one.’ What did we land with, Indie Panties Day?
[Laughter]
John: Yeah, there's also- I wonder if we got it on the DVD, a really creepy, awkward beat after they’ve watched the porno that Aldis and Beth did, just very. 
Chris: That's a nice little viral video.
John: Yeah we’ll have to find that. 
Dean: Yeah.
John: Oh, and a beautiful three way pass, by the way. That was a tough shot, you know, in a crowded-
Dean: And it's a callback from the Zanzibar Job. 
John: Yes.
Dean: Where they did a similar three way.
John: Yeah. 
Dean: And I love this local actor.
John: Oh man, he's fantastic.
Dean: Harold rocked it.
John: ‘Yes, it was delicious.’ Yeah no, Eliot's impatience. This, by the way- getting a hotel key without your ID, I was a little fuzzy on whether it would work or not. I had written it, and I was like ‘Ah, am I kinda cheating?’ So I went to a hotel and did it. 
[Laughter]
John: Two days before we actually did this.
Chris: You did?
John: Yes. I won't tell you what hotel because they shouldn't have done it, but I got a hotel room key that way.
Chris: That's great.
John: Yeah. It's amazing what you can do if you have no fear of prosecution.
[Laughter]
John: ‘Oh, I'm doing a television show.’ And this was tough. We had to split them up, we had to figure out what the geography was- oh he hates Sterling so much.
[Laughter]
John: And Mark Sheppard just teeing off, just- 
Dean: Mark is delicious in this part, man. 
John: Yes.
Dean: I'm telling you, I could just watch him play this guy all day long.
John: Yeah, and what's great is Richard Kind, kind of, really kind of justifying, really doing the evil speech of evil, ‘He's a good mayor.’
Chris: Yeah.
John: And he was the one who came up with, ‘I’m good for Bellbridge.’
Chris: ‘I was good for Bellbridge.’
John:  ‘I'm- no matter what I did, I did my job, you know.’
Chris: I like, too, that we have Nate and the mayor both- 
John: Both drinking.
Chris: Both drinking.
Dean: Yeah.
John: I think that was on the day we came up with that, where Nate would get the booze from. 
Dean: Right.
John: Same place. I think we were just- cause this is the same hotel room. That was the fun of this episode, it was figuring out all the identical space- the fact that all hotel rooms are identical.
Chris: Right.
John: And that we suddenly realized, ‘Wait that means we can shoot in one and just redress.’ This is a long ass speech, this was a tough day.
Dean: And again done in a one-er.
John: Yes.
Dean: So the degree of difficulty for poor Mark was very, very high, but he knocked it out again.
John: He's really abused in television. Cause I will tell you right now, a lot of show runners will be like, ‘I have two and a half of impossible bullshit, get me Mark Sheppard in here.’
Dean: Right.
Chris: He's- I think he went from here, he was- he did the- I guess that three part CSI-
John: Yeah.
Chris: Where they had all the CSIs in one link and he was the bad guy in that, and he works.
John: He's a great- he really in that British actor tradition, yeah. 
Chris: Yeah.
John: And this- this bio of this arms dealer is pretty much just a bio of an arms dealer we took. I'm not gonna tell you who, because it was Chris’s idea and if you're angry, you should take your vengeance on him and his family.
[Laughter]
John: And not me, I am a big fan of arms dealers.
Chris: Paul Blackthorne, great- what is he-?
John: Well he had done Dresden Files, I knew him from that. 
Chris: Dresden Files.
John: But he's, you know, nailed the accent, and he's also really tall, he's got a physically imposing presence. 
Chris: Yeah.
John: And Tim’s tall, and it's really hard sometimes, to find the villains that can kind of, you know. And this was a great scene, and really one of the few times that the team lays into Nate. And I like, by the way, Nate’s getting more and more rumpled. Everyone else is kind of pulling it together, and he's just getting rougher and rougher looking.
Chris: Didn’t we have some weather here?
Dean: On the outtakes reel that's actually on this DVD, you'll see some funny outtakes from this scene.
Chris: With the weather right?
Dean: With the weather and Tim’s hair.
[Laughter]
Chris: Oh wow.
John: Oh right, even Chris is having a problem here and he's in a ponytail. Yeah the wind- the whole day we were shooting this we had thunderstorms coming through. 
Dean: Right.
John: So we were literally, ‘It's sunny. Go, go, go!’ And running down and getting the exteriors, yeah. 
Chris: Yeah.
John: Yeah we banged this out fast, man.
Dean: And yet they really nailed it. Again, when our actors dig in, they find gold.
John: And this was a big moment, this was- this is something I think that people sometimes ask, ‘Why does Eliot do this?’ Eliot has made himself a promise, this is his job, he will keep them safe.
Chris: Right.
Dean: And Nate realizes-
John: That's all he has.
Dean: Nate realizes for the first time he's actually let his team down.
John: Yeah.
Dean: And now he feels like he has to make it up to them.
John: Well, you know, when Parker does it. 
Dean: Yeah.
John: I mean that's the thing, Parker never gives- expresses- she’ll tease, she’ll express sarcasm, but disappointment- you know, ‘Be the person we came back for.’ She's referencing the season opener.
Dean: Right.
John: And that's the problem, is addiction- he's allowed himself to be- he's no longer the guy who used to chase them.
[Silence]
John: That's me drinking my Guinness, don't mind me.
[Laughter]
John: Oh god. What would I do without booze? 
Dean: So now we come back to the hotel.
John: Was that on mic? Alright.
[Laughter]
John: So we’re back on the hotel. 
Dean: And again, our clue from the previous episode of the Maltese Falcon.
Chris: Really key to watch these two back to back folks.
Dean: Oh, now this is-
Chris: I mean, maybe get a sandwich, but don't do much more than that.
Dean: This, I think, is one of my favorite bullet time shots that we've ever done. 
John: This was not as- not quite as insane as- and America thanks you for Beth in the French maid outfit.
Chris: The french maid.
Dean: It’s after this gag.
John: Yeah. Not quite as insane as the- by the way, this moment is based on a comedy club in Winnipeg, when- where the comics would go perform, it was a contest amongst them to see how long they could go without leaving the hotel room, and without letting the maids in.
[Laughter]
Chris: Cause there was no-
John: There was nothing to do. 
Chris: Nothing to do.
John: So it was like, ‘I went 40- I went 72 hours; the maids left the towels at the door.’
Dean: Great passing out scene.
Chris: Oh there we go.
John: That man is passed out. And that looks like my bed in every stand up club I ever went at.
Dean: This was the bullet- this was a very complicated bullet time shot.
John: Is this as bad or worse than the pilot, where you did four different directions?
Dean: No, it's not as bad as the pilot, but the timing of it is hard because of the extras and the switching of directions.
John: Yeah. So we start with one-
Dean: And we were using a different steadicam artist who had never done this before. 
John: Oh, that’s right.
Dean: So we had to teach Norbert how to do it while we were doing it.
Chris: Oh, that's right. 
Dean: It was very tough.
Chris: Cause our camera guy had a-
Dean: It was the one day Gary Camp was actually sick.
John: Yeah.
Chris: His tooth exploded or something.
John: Yeah, and he still showed up for work, by the way. 
Chris: He did.
John: With a face that looked like somebody had worked him over with a bat.
Dean: Now originally you had a much more complicated gag to stall, and then you came up with this gag, and we were on the floor laughing.
Chris: Yeah, this is funny.
John: You said, you were like, ‘I can't shoot that gag, all I have is the elevator’ I was like ‘Alright, well we’ll do this.’ And it's funny cause it was really a throwaway, and then the more we talked about it, the funnier it got.
Dean: Yeah.
John: As you realize it's just comedy beat, after comedy beat, after comedy beat. Also: Mark Sheppard.
Dean: Yeah.
Chris: Mark Sheppard does the- he takes you through the- 
John: The fives stages of death and dying.
Chris: The array of reactions.
Dean: This is-
Chris: Puts on a [unintelligible].
John: And by the way- same elevator, we’re just changing the floor number on every shot.
Dean: And the plants.
John: And the plants.
[Laughter]
John: So yes. And we- but we did run Tim up the stairs a lot that day.
Chris: We did.
Dean: I'll tell you this may be my- the funniest gag we've ever done.
John: Just cause both actors- oh this- just the seething.
Dean: The rage.
John: And both actors kind of really digging in on it.
[Laughter]
Chris: Oh.
John: And then... 
Chris: Just kidding this right on his reel, this is all the different, kind of, reaction to it.
John: And I like, he's almost too tired to keep doing it. And up.
Dean: But what sells the whole gag for me is this last one. Because at this point now they've done everything they can, and they just don't care anymore.
[Laughter]
John: They're just. 
Dean: They're done.
John: They’re done, they’re just exhausted. And now- now Nate can give up. Yeah, he's bought them enough time to do what they need to do. And also this was a nice beat, cause Mark made a point of it, it's like if he just had one more second he would've figured it out.
Chris: Yeah.
Dean: Right.
John: You know you can never- Sterling- you always have to play fair with him. 
Dean: Right.
John: You know he's always this close to figuring it out. These guys were great as the vaguely resentful FBI agents. 
Dean: Exactly.
John: Because he's very insulting. And a timing joke. Mark carries a lot in this episode.
Chris: Door- door closed, there you go, door closes, door opens.
Dean: Mark had his work cut out for him this episode.
John: Door opens. ‘Hey, Bob.’ Yeah, these two had a lot of fun. There’s about 900 different takes of this. And oh this was tricky, because when we got up there, we were shooting on the top floor, but that meant we couldn't double the corridor.
Dean: That’s right.
John: Because we had the skylights.
Chris: Oh, hm.
Dean: So we had to find other corridors. 
John: Yeah, and sometimes people were sleeping, sorry about that.
Dean: This is a very simple bullet time shot, but a very effective one, I think.
John: Yeah, the big reveal.
Dean: Just the, ‘viola.’
John: And you're out.
Chris: How did they do that?
John: A lot of fun. And a wink, which would distract any normal human. And this is- I'm trying to remember where we came up with this bit. Oh the carts were brutal, trying to find the cart we could put a dude in.
Chris: Oh yeah.
Dean: But this bit here is a call back to the episode with the kids-
John: Yes. Yeah That's right- where Hardison and- 
Dean: Cannot rappel.
Chris: That’s just great.
John: Rappelling just does not fit well, he's just not left as- and by the way, it really- real risk of Aldis Hodge strangling there. Sorry about that, Aldis. 
[Laughter]
John: And he's figured it out. Yeah and that was a lot of fun. Nashua, New Hampshire, near where my sister lives, by the way.
Chris: Right that's where they're sending it.
John: That's actually where they are sending it- they're sending that trunk to my sister’s front lawn. What little I can do. And this is- what's fun is that we- the camera work is very energized, the game's afoot, and the second half- it’s interesting, the two previous seasons, the two episodes both had their own internal structure. This really just plays as a movie because all the set up is the first half.
Chris: Yes.
John: This entire episode is the rock that's been pushed down the hill, and we’re just chasing it.
Chris: And everything is paying off.
John: Yeah. And again, drawn from my experience in standup years, all the hotel rooms look alike. If you were to wake me up in any random hotel room, I woke up and my trash was there, I'd assume that that was my room.
Chris: Sure. I mean as any business traveller can tell you, they'll wake up and not know what city they're in.
John: And Richard Kind, by the way- poor Richard Kind spent a week in that bathrobe. 
Dean: Yeah.
John: On docks, on oil tankers, in hotel rooms.
Chris: Yeah, it’s true.
John: That was- he formed a very unhealthy relationship with that bathrobe.
Dean: And had to be in the bathrobe the whole time.
John: Yeah. This is my favorite bit- they're just the type of people who cut up people in tubs, that's their job.
Chris: Yeah.
Dean: But this little look of Eliot's right there tells you everything.
Chris: ‘Alright, I'm gonna cut her up.’
John: ‘Alright, this is my day.’ Aldis’s character Mr. Joshua, of course, named after the Gary Busey character from- 
Chris: Lethal Weapon.
John: Lethal Weapon. If we need a killer's name, why not-?
Dean: Go to the best.
John: Why not reference the best? Bunch of different versions of this. And I love them playing good cop, bad cop. But it was interesting, we had a version of this speech- and I will give this up to you as director, that explained everything. And you really looked at it and said, ‘Alright, here's the actual three things we need for this to make sense.’ Cause as the writer you never know, but you come at it from a storyteller like, ‘Here are the points the audience needs to be emotionally engaged to move forward.’
Dean: And it was a tough call, because Richard did such an amazing job with this speech. 
John: Yes.
Dean: You almost didn't want to lose anything. But, you know, we have time that we have to come in at the end of the show, and we needed to lose some time, so we really boiled it down.
Chris: Oh was this something that came out in editing? Or in-?
John: Yeah.
Chris: Oh it did, I didn't even notice.
John: You didn't notice, exactly. 
Chris: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
John: The speech was about twice as long. Because really there's a whole mini scene between Richard and Tim there. 
Dean: Right.
John: And it really was- you know, you got it, he's bargaining for his life. That’s all you need to know.
Dean: And Richard is so knocking it out, you're actually learning a lot more with even less.
John: Yeah. His relationship through his attitude. No, there are times- even a writer would admit-
Dean: And that's all real sweat, by the way, no sweat bottle came in there; he earned each drop.
John: Boom. I like Aldis’ vague resentment at not being allowed to punch the guy.
Chris: Yeah.
John: Because again, everyone has their niche. And also the great expression Beth chooses there. ‘Eh, I've been in the tub waiting while you beat up a mayor. I'm out now.’
[Laughter]
John: ‘What are we doing next?’
Chris: Yeah, completely blank affect.
John: Yeah, exactly.
Dean: Day at the office.
John: Yeah.
Dean: But the subtle look of feeling like she's on a sinking ship. 
John: Yeah.
Dean: That we get out of Tara at the end of this scene, is really very great for setting up the turn.
John: And even- It's interesting, to watch Chris choose- Aldis is having basically Hardison question dad, while Eliot is instead watching the interplay between the two of them to see how Nate treats Hardison. 
Dean: Right.
John: Knowing that's the better indicator of what the relationship is. He does a similar thing in 207, actually, between he and Sophie- between Gina, with the bomb scene. 
Dean: Right, right. 
John: Yeah.
Dean: And then here we drop our red herring. Has Tara jumped the shark?
John: For a minute or half we considered doing it. For a minute and a half, what would- the problem was, it's Jeri Ryan, and you like her and you're hanging out with her and working with her and it was like, ‘Nah, I don't want the- I like the character.’
Chris: Well it sets up the- the act where it all pays off is one of my favorite acts we’ve done.
John: It’s one of my favorite bits ever. This, by the way, it seems like it's just an act break, it's horrible. Sterling has used his- the fact he used to be best friends with Nate Ford, to know that he is going to use his child’s- dead child's art to trap him.
Chris: Yeah.
John: This is a moment that was kind of thrown away, and the two actors, I saw them actually talking about it on set and they really dug in on it.
Chris: Yeah.
John: It's like, that is a horrible moment. You know, because he knows he won't leave town without that, and Sterling is the only man on earth who knows he won't leave town without that. 
Chris: Right.
John: Yeah. And it's one of the few times we’re behind the desk there.
Dean: Yeah.
John: Yeah. It's a weird place to shoot; it's just got that picture behind it, it's just trough to frame
Dean: But we wanted to get there and we found a place. Now this scene is unusual in that we've gone now to our handheld, which we do when our characters are either in physical or emotional jeopardy. But unlike other scenes, we went musicless here.
John: Yes.
Dean: Because the performances were so strong and so right on-
Chris: Oh that’s great.
Dean: -we didn't want to tell the audience what to feel. Just- we just wanted them to feel it.
John: Also in the tradition, that's the same glass.
Dean: Yeah.
John: Nate and- 
Chris: Oh that's the same glass from- from Nate in-
Dean: Season 1.
Chris: Season 1. That’s great.
John: Nate and Sterling have one glass they pass back and forth between each other depending on who’s winning.
Chris: That's great.
Dean: Right.
John: And the fact he's brought it to give it to him is sort of a signature of the deal they're falling into. And again, by the way, the idea that you would protect a witness that might’ve killed a cop. When you do the research? Oh man. This was kind of the Whitey Bulger thing in costic.
Chris: Well I mean, you know, we- it gave us a chance to explore- it was a whole different episode from the point of view of the FBI. 
John: Yeah.
Chris: About the compromises that people make when they get confidential, you know- 
John: Informants.
Chris: Cooperating witnesses, of looking the other way of other things they're doing. All they are focused on is their case.
John: That mayor is giving them 20 good busts.
Chris: Yeah, yeah.
John: They're not going to follow rumors. Also Mark Sheppard is a- man, this is a great scene. There's two versions of this scene. This is the one we used, the one I like. One where he's angry and superior, and one where he's genuinely hurt that Nate Ford had become this man. 
Dean: Yeah.
John: That he's genuinely hurt he has to offer him this deal. And this is the take we used. 
Chris: Yeah.
John: Which was an oddly vulnerable moment for that character. He doesn't want to be here, he doesn't want to be giving him this offer. Wow, this is all close up, too, which we almost never do.
Dean: Yeah. But this is- there's a lot of things that we did in this two part season finale that we don't normally do, that were out of the box, but necessary, it was very interesting.
John: Yeah, and this is him telling him this is his last chance. No, and- I always wonder- I gotta- I need to ask Tim when does- cause I know Tim in his head knows when Nate makes the decision what he's gonna do. Is it here or is it after the phone call? Is it after the phone call?
Dean: I think it's after the phone call.
John: Yeah. But there's alot going on.
Dean: But the twist here was cause Nate always is two steps ahead. Until he said, ‘And my team,’ and the guy- and he says, ‘No, just you.’ And there's a look on his face and it's one- it’s again, a rare vulnerable moment for Nate where he didn’t see that one coming. 
John: Yeah. And loses his hand and it's like, you know.
Dean: Again, getting to shoot at the actual docks was fantastic.
John: Except we can't shoot past her right shoulder, cause there was a navy ship there that we started to shoot, and the nice gentlemen came over and told us not to put that on camera, please.
Dean: That’s right.
Chris: Oh really?
John: Yeah.
Chris: Wow.
John: Yeah.
Dean: And briny despair may be my favorite Parker line.
John: Briny despair, old clowns.
Chris: Old clown shoes.
John: Briny despair. And again, there's a mini arc here, and the actresses are very good friends, and they're really found it, of their developing physical friendship and, like, just the fact that she can be- Parker’s physical character, and so the fact she’ll walk in pace with Tara is a big deal.
Dean: And now we've brought back Sophie.
John: There you go.
Dean: First time we haven't seen her on a monitor this season.
John: Exactly.
Chris: And here's the payoff from the scene in-
Dean: 207.
Chris: Well part one also, this-
Dean: But we set up really at the- 
Chris: We did, you're right.
Dean: At the- The Two Live Crew Job that she was going off to find herself. 
John: Yeah.
Chris: Right.
Dean: And then in the next episode, when he tried to bring her back, she says, ‘Do you want me back for the team, or for you?’ 
Chris: Right, right.
Dean: And now he calls that back and says, ‘Not for the team, for me.’
Chris: Right, right.
Dean: ‘I need you back.’
John: It was also subtle, but we've shown her in conveyance in a lot of the other shots when she's away, so you won't be tipped off by the fact that she's in a conveyance. That she's in transport.
Chris: That she's in a helicopter.
John: She's in transit, she’s in a helicopter. We've shown her in cars, she’s done the cell phone in different locations. 
Chris: Yeah, yeah, that’s true.
John: So hopefully you were not like ‘Oh, why are we seeing her in a different context?’ 
Chris: Right.
John: We've seen her in this context before. Now this was- man, this was a great day, this was just- we cleared the set and Tim just parked his ass on the floor. 
Dean: We did three takes, but this is actually his first take. He so nailed it on the first take.
John: Oh, really?
Dean: That the others were really just for safety. But he just came in there, ready to do this part.
John: Yeah. And this is- you know.
Dean: And then the tragedy that she didn't hear any of it. 
John: Yeah.
Chris: It's one of the great things about cell phones. Is that- from a dramatic standpoint- I mean they help you bring characters together, but you can also use them to- 
Dean: Separate them.
Chris: To separate them.
John: Never in 1940s comedy is or 1940s movie is like, ‘Pennsylvania 927: Oh the killer is-!’ ‘Oh I lost him.’
Chris: ‘The line went dead!’
John: ‘The line went dead!’ ‘No sir, the line’s not dead, I'll reconnect you right away.’ Thank you operator.’
Dean: But his feeling of betrayal at losing the connection.
John: Yeah.
Dean: Really again, is a wonderful red herring where we feel like, ‘Oh my god, he's really gonna sell this team out.’
John: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
John: Or at the very least you have no idea what the hell he's gonna do. 
Dean: Yeah.
John: You know, he is drunk, he is pissed off. No he-
Chris: And he's been put- he's been backed in a corner.
John: And you know, which-
Dean: But even the way he said here, ‘I have a plan that will fix everyone.’ It’s like, woah.
John: And having the picture that Sam drew. It's interesting that it's essentially a codependent relationship, but it's a functioning one that they have.
Dean: And here, again, is a strange bit of blocking that we had never done before, where Nate has isolated himself on the stairway. 
John: Yes.
Chris: Well that helps sell everything, too, doesn't it? Separated from them.
John: Well he's not in front of them, he's behind them. He's separated from them, exactly. Fun bit of blocking, too, actually. It's- we’ll use it again, I'm sure.
Dean: Yeah.
John: Cause that's a nice angle. And yes and then everyone- and then her coming around to pull focus. No, it's for a static shot, it's really interesting. But this is one of the few times we don't tell you the plan.
Dean: Right.
John: You know, it's one of the few times we transition. Usually we-
Chris: We did that in part two of season one, also.
John: Yeah, yeah. It’s- we’re usually an open mystery. 
Chris: Yes.
John: At least- and this was one of the few times that you're not- you have no idea- because the rules for the show usually are, you know what's gonna happen and the fun is seeing it go wrong and how they're gonna recover. This one it's like, you’re just gonna have to trust us.
Chris: Who invented the ‘And this is what we're gonna do’ was that Aristophones? The first one.
John: That was Aristophanes.
Chris: ‘Alright everyone, gather around. Grab your togas; let’s go.’
Dean: Now once again we've got the teams separated in different locations, each with different objectives.
Chris: Yeah.
Dean: And that's a little bit of a callback to the pilot episode, when she did the burn gag.
Chris: That's true.
John: Yes, the burn scam. Yeah, wow was this a tough shot.
Dean: That's a little bit of scale, huh guys?
Chris: Wow. 
Dean: How about that?
Chris: They let us- now was that digital or do we- let us paint on the ship?
Dean: We digitally put the name on the ship.
Chris: We did, ok.
John: Well, we did paint some of it .
Dean: We did paint some of it. You’ll see a sign later that we actually painted.
John: That was a lot of fun, just trying to figure out like, the whole break into the FBI office. And what's the easiest way? 
Dean: Short fight, but one of my favorites. 
John: Yeah, just brutal. This is a tough- this was a tough day. Chris did all of these fights in one day, straight through, and ran back and forth between the dialogue scenes.
Dean: This really should've been two days of shooting, that we did in one day.
John: He did like a 20 hour day here.
Dean: This was an insane day.
Chris: Oof.
Dean: But we only had use of this ship for two days, so we had to get it all in.
John: Yeah. He's got the samurai ponytail rocking there, that's how you can tell there's gonna be some fighting. And we have money, and we would like to arrange a meeting. ‘I'm a man with a briefcase full of money, I would like to meet your boss.’ It’s a great, classic trope.
Chris: I like this act, this is my favorite act.
John: I also like- I gave them this running bit where he's counting guys with guns.
Chris: Yeah, I remember that from- you came up with that last season.
John: Season one, and we never found a place for it.
Chris: That's a great shot, too.
John: Yeah, that's a great shot. That and- actually on the boat, that's the way you get between decks. This is actually one of my favorite Parker bits, just talking- coming up with the speech about what it's like to die in an air vent. Because the fact that she's always in air vents, is worth addressing, you know.
Dean: And it shows you the way her mind thinks.
John: Yes, exactly. ‘Scratching on the metal.’ She's kinda turned on, I'm not sure where this is going. 
[Laughter]
Dean: Yeah, that’s fair.
Chris: It's the tongue, the darting tongue and she shakes out of it.
John: Let’s go and we’re off.
Dean: She loves the danger.
Chris: We didn't get wet that down folks, that was actual Portland rain.
John: Yes, Beth Riesgraf and Jeri Ryan were on a rooftop, on a skyscraper, with a thunderstorm during most of this day.
Dean: Not dangerous at all.
John: Not dangerous, ignore the lighting, kids. Man, what were we thinking?
Dean: And he pulled out the Scottish accent out of nowhere, which was fantastic.
John: I know, I know. Which was a lot of fun. Because the idea is the mayor has gotten in over his head, and he's dealing with the same sort of businesses that- power drill was the nastiest thing I could think of.
Chris: And that's quite a nasty bit on it, too.
John: Yes, exactly. Well that’s- you know, I mean, if you're gonna mess up somebody's knees, that's the bit you're gonna use yeah. ‘Still counting.’ Oh yeah, then we just reset- it was really tricky because it was so complicated, we had to reset their goal at the beginning of every act. 
Dean: Right.
John: What do they need to get? Yeah. And again, it's like, do these guys really meet in broad daylight to look at their goods? Yes! Yes they do!
Chris: Yeah.
John: And usually-
Dean: And here's where we set up the phone does voice dialing, which is crucial to our final act.
John: Thank you 21st century. Because we enjoyed tying up Richard Kind and we’ll leave it at that.
Chris: Yeah, I'm sure the fact that GPS is in every phone is gonna be our best friend and possibly our worst enemy this coming season. 
John: No, it's a big deal. 
Chris: Yeah.
John: A phone that's on is a phone that can be tracked.
Chris: Yup.
John: Exactly. And yes and Richard, by the way, finding the desperation. ‘They cut her up in a bathtub!’ 
John: Like the murder wasnt the worst thing in the world, but the fact that somehow it was so undignified? Yeah. Nice scream. And that was, by the way, great little comedy beat, just like, ‘Well to be fair, he did most of the cutting.’ 
Chris: Yeah.
John: The two of them- we don't usually have Eliot and Nate doing comedy together, but when they do it's a pure relationship, it's a nice rhythm.
Dean: And if you look closely, there in the distance, we've set up Sophie is actually with the buyers.
John: Yes.
Dean: But you wouldn't notice that unless you watched it again.
Chris: Oh, that's great.
John: And now they've broken in, they've come down through the air vent, she did not enjoy the experience in any way shape or form. Oh man, this was a tough day. That's like-
Chris: Hot? Cold? What was the temperature? Do you remember?
John: Brutal, brutal hot. Cold at night. Hot at- you know what? There's never-
Dean: Back and forth.
John: It's never comfy on an oil tanker deck.
Chris: No- I’m trying- yeah I'm trying to imagine-
Dean: And there again, there’s Sophie in the distance.
Chris: There she is, that's great.
John: Sophie in the distance. And this is a real fusebox we tacked into. Sorry.
Dean: In city hall?
John: In city hall. 
[Laughter]
John: This was actually a fun thing is, this year we shifted to Hardison not using a signature laptop, but using the minis. 
Chris: Yeah.
John: Because our hacker consultant, Kevin Mitteny told us that's what they're using. They're using $300 computers and throwing them away if they're gonna get busted. And running stuff off the thumb drives.
Dean: And this was the- in the actual cargo hold of the oil tanker, so this was very confined space to shoot in. It looked great, but it was very difficult to light and move the camera around and because the top of the stairs- that was the only stairs that was the only way in and out of that room. So all the lights, all the cameras all had to go up and down stairs- there was no other way in or out.
John: And remind you, Gina’s in this scene later. Gina at, like, 17 months pregnant.
[Laughter]
John: Came down those stairs like a fricken trooper, man. We were just- we were more scared than she was. She was like going down them, and we were like, ‘Ahhh, oh god.’
Chris: Just kind of like [unintelligible] step.
John: It’s an oil tanker! And she’s in like fashion boots, and a kicky top, you know.
Chris: Wow.
John: This was- you know what’s weird? This speech doesn’t advance the plot in any way, shape, or form. This speech is just him selling his character to buy time, and yet it’s really interesting. 
Dean: Yeah this-
John: Tim’s digging in on the character here. It's his evil speech of evil, you know.
Dean: Right
John: And he never gets to give one.
Chris: Yeah, it's interesting when we can do that. We've done that a few times, the- 
John: Glengarry, Glen death.
Chris: Sophie also- also as the Indian pharmaceutical rep gave an evil speech of evil.
John: Yes.
Dean: And this you wrote in the script as the Bourne fade. 
John: Yes.
Dean: Which I thought was the perfect description.
John: It's a perfect- it’s a good shorthand. He's there, and then he’s not there.
Chris: It's great.
John: By the way, Chris has just stepped three feet to the right into a tool locker.
[Laughter]
Dean: Right.
John: There's no actual exit there. And- was there a reason for the 360? Just to keep it- just to be interesting? Because I don't think it was-
Chris: And how hard was that within that space?
Dean: Really hard. But we felt that it was a great way to, again, the world has changed. We thought one thing was going on here, but now we've spun it by-
Chris: And that's steadicam.
Dean: That's all steadicam. Gary Camp.
John: It's weird, because it's also, kind of, Nate Ford buying into his persona there. That's one of the times you really see him.
Dean: And Jackie ‘The Joke Man’ Martling.
John: Who came in and did a great job for us!
Dean: You know what's funny, is that I thought he was just gonna be a comic that you had to teach how to act. But you know what? He really came in with the character, he committed to it, he wasn't just trying to be jokey. I mean, he really knocked it out.
John: He totally gives us serious takes-
Chris: He’s totally convincing as the evidence locker guy.
John: Slightly more convincing than Jeri Ryan in insanely hot pants as the FBI agent. 
[Laughter]
John: I gotta with Jackie here on the verisimilitude scale. Although we did put Jackie in those pants, that didn't work out for us as much. But no, he's great and the kind of vaguely resentful- you can totally see him doing this character on a- 
Dean: And yet he gave us a great exit line here.
John: ‘Oh no, who wants to talk to the evidence guy?’ 
[Laughter]
John: And that was, by the way, that was him, that was not in the script.
Chris: That’s true.
Dean: And not overselling it either.
John: No, no, it was really nice. You could see him playing that role on a cop show.
Dean: Totally.
John: Absolutely. Nate Ford, international man of mystery and arms dealer.
Chris: Peacoat really working well on the boat.
[Laughter]
John: Yeah, nice. It's very much-
Chris: That was a coat waiting for a set.
John: Yeah. Well it's interesting cause- 
Dean: Oh and there's Sophie in the background.
Chris: There’s Sophie!
John: And some people in the first screening kind of caught her, but- 
Chris: Now she's there buying guns? Who’s-?
[Laughter]
John: Well she's- she is buying guns, you know. 
Chris: For her library?
[Laughter]
Dean: Library needs guns, too.
John: Libraries need guns, too. I like to think- I like to think that she is a Swiss buyer.
Chris: No, I mean, it’s a well armed library.
John: She's a Swiss buyer, she’s-
Dean: And here's a nice little turn.
John: Nice swing around. Shot that day on the boat to reveal that they talked. And then over again. Wow, and we all shot this in a real container.
Dean: In a real containter.
Chris: It was for real? Oh, wow.
Dean: Yeah. Now back on the roof, and this is my favorite Parker bit we've ever done. 
Chris: Yeah.
John: Yeah it's tough. There's a lot of good ones, but. 
Dean: But.
John: But we never expected Beth to do this.
Chris: This turn here is great.
Dean: This is the first time since the pilot that we brought back how lethal she can actually be.
John: There's a bit in Stork Job, but boom. Oh yeah and she locked in on Jeris throat on that, too. 
Chris: Yeah.
John: And Jeri goes over the edge. 
Chris: Over the edge. 
John: She's wired, but that's Jeri Ryan hanging over the edge. And it was-
Chris: And again, it was raining and windy. 
John: Raining. Yeah no, they were both fearless up there. 
John: They had a good time up there. They really wound up working well together. And now it's all gone to hell.
Dean: But it's a real callback to that pilot line of, ‘Going to my angry place.’
John: Yeah. This is just- because what's happened is- and just for writing thing, Parker has let her into the family. The only people who are human beings are members of the family. Once Jeri’s betrayed them, she’s moved outside the family, and is an object.
Chris: Well, also to betray the family is-
John: Real ship captain.
Dean: Real ship-
Chris: Oh wow, that's great.
John: You were saying? To betray...
Chris: To betray the family is even worse.
Dean: This is a great hit right here.
Chris: Oh!
Dean: Bam! Man.
John: Yeah- man shooting- that's as wide as that space is, guys. 
Dean: Yeah.
John: That was brutal to be down there.
Dean: And these are two guys from the beginning of the previous episode. So again, if you haven't watched them back to back, you might not realize these are the two guys who shot Bonanno.
Chris: Yeah.
John: Yeah, so you know we've linked up, physically, the bad guys.
Dean: Now that one actually- we put that one actually up there.
John: Yeah, that's a real sign. And this is my favorite, this is one of my favorite character reveals ever, and it's because she's doing one of my favorite characters ever. Gina’s doing Annie Croy here.
Chris: Annie Croy.
Dean: Which, again, ties back to the beginning of the season.
John: Yeah it's almost like we think this through. Yeah and- I'm sorry we're all gonna be quiet here because we all love this.
Dean: ‘Bye now.’
John: ‘Bye now.’
[Laughter]
John: That's fucked up, man. I'm sorry, I'm gonna swear on DVD and say that is fucked up.
Dean: That ‘bye now’ is. 
Chris: The ‘bye now’ throwaway.
Dean: Oh boy, ruthless. And then my second favorite reveal of a character all year.
Chris: Oh.
John: Yeah. No, that's fantastic. And the way Tim sells this like, ‘What the hell is going on?’ No, even writing that character reveal I wasn't sure it would work, and even when we shot it I'm like, ‘Yeah, this works.’ Gina- you've been so waiting to be- hear her voice.
Dean: She is so talented.
John: We've also really lined it up like there’s no out here. We- usually the audience- a smart audience member will see a backdoor we put. There is no backdoor, she's the backdoor. 
Chris: Yeah this was a tricky bit of scripting too, right? I mean we had a ship, and we needed to disable it. I mean, what was- right?
John: It was a lot of wandering around on the ship going, ‘Alright, how does this work exactly?’
Chris: Yeah.
Dean: And even though Tim is out of focus here, you get everything right there.
John: ‘The hell’s going on?’ And she doesn't break character, no.
Dean: Cause she is the ultimate grifter.
John: Yeah, no she does a great- and OK, shoot this guy in the face when I'm off the-’ She's impatient and that's actually kind of a nice thing. And now this.
Dean: Terrific little fight scene shot by Marc Roskin.
John: Yes, at some ungodly hour of the morning. And this is where we pay off the numbers. We've been waiting two years to do this.
Dean: And again, in the actual ship.
John: Yeah, there's a lot of stuff to hurt yourself on. 
Dean: And this gun going off was not easy.
John: Yeah.
Chris: Oof. 
John: Yeah, we're spilling brass all over the inside of the ship. The- this is a brutal fight sequence, all these stunties did- you know, they're banging off metal all over the place.
Dean: In this kind of space, it is so hard to do this safely, these guys were champs. And Christian- I’m telling you, he's amazing in these things.
John: No double.
Chris: Yeah.
Dean: Refuses to get a double.
John: Refused to get a double. There you go, and down, he counts. By the way, we’re not exhibiting superhuman strength here. This is how you break flexicuffs.
Chris: Oh wow, that's a little hulk moment.
John: Yeah, the only thing keeping- if you- if- that's why they flexicuff you behind your back. The only thing keeping you in flexicuffs in front of you is the belief that you should be in flexicuffs. Little survival tip.
Chris: Oh wow.
John: And this is also a favorite bit, because it was really written as a kind of expositional, but Beth found this really weird rhythm near the end of it.
Dean: Oh boy.
John: This is shot with the XD right?
Dean: Yeah.
John: This is all shot with a Prosumer-level camera. 
Dean: She just finds this little bit of evil.
John: ‘Oh, I actually thought you were going to throw me off.’ Yeah, exactly.
Dean: Just this little fake laugh here, just so great. I think it's actually in the two shot, because it has to be in the comedy frame.
John: Yeah the- also the- it's interesting that the- the idea that it's fair enough that they would indeed-
Dean: Here it is.
John: Here it is, coming up. ‘I thought you were actually going to throw me off the roof’. And there she is. The look before hand, the ‘Oh, that's right, this is how humans are supposed to react.’
[Laughter]
John: ‘Eh, I was totally going to throw you off that roof.’ 
Chris: Yeah, that’s great.
John: But the whole understanding that yes we probably- that's actually a favorite line and Jeri really nailed it, which is ‘You would have forgiven him.’ They're all enablers, they're all in this weird broken family, and you know, it's both their strength and their weakness. Also, again, by the way, director thing, I had a whole explanation of how Hardison disarmed the ship, and we had no time to shoot it and you were like, ‘Giant wrench!’
Chris: Giant wrench!
John: You know what he's done.
Chris: When you see a giant wrench, you see that he messed something up.
John: He is a monkey wrencher. You know! It's a term.
Dean: In the comedy frame. so-
John: And by the way, ‘Took you long enough,’ is a recurring theme for the entire back half of the season.
Dean: Right there.
Chris: Oh that's right.
Dean: And she walks by. ‘Huh?’
[Laughter]
Dean: Love it.
John: And then a beautiful over the shoulder. Oh that's a hero shot right there. No, it really is- it’s interesting because it was very scary, because you know, you didn't know how long Gina would be with us going into the season and everything.
Chris: Oh, this is great.
John: And the entire act depends on Sophie being the best grifter on earth.
Chris: Even him-
Dean: And it's just fun to see them all back together again, because we've been starved from it.
Chris: Him being like places where he doesn't know he was all throughout this episode.
John: Yeah, it's a nice running gag actually. And zero. And by the way, it was Chris who caught the count. Chris came up to me and was like, ‘If that's the last guy I'm gonna-’ I was like, ‘Oh, good catch at 2am, nicely done.’ ‘Took you long enough,’ again.
Dean: And this sets up the handcuff bit at the end.
John: Yeah, that was tricky.
Chris: Right he has the handcuffs.
John: Oh god, yeah. Boy this was really easy to keep track of.
[Laughter]
Dean: And both of them really delivered- you know, this is a very short scene that needs a lot of emotions. Because it wraps up really where they are and where they're going next season, and they just did it with looks and with subtext. And it was just terrific.
John: You poor bastard. And also, by the way, what I love about this is, this is the happy ending to most television shows, this moment right here. We then fuck it up.
Dean: Right, exactly.
John: Yeah. They really care for each other, they are really good friends.
Dean: And they're there for each other.
John: And they're there for each other, and he's a broken bastard. And what's great is he walks out of there without really knowing what the rest of the plan is.
Dean: My favorite Richard Kind line right here, ‘I don't know.’
John: ‘I don't know.’
[Laughter]
Chris: That's very Richard Kind. That’s Mad About You, Spin City Richard Kind right there.
John: Yeah, it really is. And by the way, yeah, only two ways out of this. That seems like a design flaw to me. Because that front window is a 40 foot drop onto the deck of the ship; you can't get out through that front window. 
Chris: Oh wow.
John: Yeah if you lock these doors, they ain’t going anywhere. Yeah, and a nice run and gun there, and there's also a little mini scene we blew off there with Paul sort of turning on Richard. Hero moment, hero- the team together.
Dean: By the way, those are some digital effects to remove the pregnant belly.
John: Nice, nicely done.
Chris: Oh really, wow.
Dean: Yes.
Chris: I say it a lot.
John: And nice hug.
Dean: And also just on a small note, we couldn't afford two helicopters. Because we had a helicopter in the scene, and we also needed a helicopter that could shoot the scene. So we used the same helicopter for both and then just digitally erased the camera that was mounted on the end of the helicopter.
Chris: Wait wait, so in other words when you're up there with them you're also shooting- the cameras below it?
Dean: So in other words- yeah, so when you see the helicopter arrive later, there was actually a camera attached to it.
John: A giant camera rig on it, like the size of a VW bug on the bottom of it.
Dean: But we erased it.
Chris: Oh that's amazing.
John: Yeah. Yeah and Sophie’s thought of everything. There's a way out, you hear sirens, it's all coming together. 
Dean: And it's fun to see them back together again.
Chris: And again, not that we do this typically. But this was, in a sense, this scene was kind of conceived of first, this scene and him on the deck. 
Dean: Right.
John: That's right.
Chris: That we were leading up to.
John: The original version of the script is, it opens with him bleeding out on the deck and you have no idea where he is.
Chris: But I'm saying even in the beginning of the season.
John: Oh yeah.
Chris: This scene was kind of where the show was going. How we were gonna get there was the question.
John: You don’t- everyone has their different ways. Before we shot a frame of season two, I knew it ended with Nate Ford saying, ‘I'm a thief.’
Chris: Right. But even- but even on a- also on the deck of a ship remember- I remember that.
John: Yeah, on the deck of a ship.
Dean: Now I think this ending is one of the bigger endings we’ve ever done, and it's really the most emotional ending I've ever done.
John: Really? I dunno you and I-
Dean: More than I was expecting it to be.
John: You and I disagree, because we all have our favorite stuff, but yeah, it-
Chris: It’s certainly a huge hero moment.
John: It's a huge hero moment, and they're all making great choices. Eliot really wants to just tear through these guys, and Nate’s not gonna let him.
Dean: Yeah.
John: Yeah. 
Dean: He's being a good dad for once.
John: Yeah. He’s- and by the way, again, this is not the right choice, he shouldn't have lied to them, he shouldn't have had a plan he didn't tell them, he shouldn’t- he's a control freak. Even in his moment of sacrifice, he's a selfish, alcoholic bastard.
[Laughter]
Dean: That's right.
John: I just wished to make sure nobody makes sure nobody thinks he's being super heroic here. He doesn't really change that much. 
Chris: That’s true.
John: No, and this was fun, we had all different kinds of versions of lockers and found out that yeah, that's how they keep a lot of evidence.
Dean: That’s crazy.
John: That was fun though too, also, you only had two rows of those evidence lockers, so you staggred them to shoot through them to make it look-
Dean: To make it seem like they went on forever.
Chris: Yeah where was that? Where-?
John: That was on set that was- remember the small soundstage we had?
Chris: Oh, ok.
Dean: It was actually a reworking of the set at the end of 207 at the airport. 
John: Yes. It was the airport, but we just moved it over to the other stage. And I also love the idea again- Nate and Sterling are playing a game that just nobody else gets to be a part of. This is just- this is just nine moves ahead guys. 
Dean: Right.
John: There's another version of the show where Katie O'Grady chases Eliot, Parker, and Hardison for an entire season, yeah, but in this version. ‘I can feel you thinking’ he knows him, he knows him that well. He knows the counter move- no, they really dug in here. And by the way, it's 110 degrees on that deck, Tim’s in a peacoat handcuffed to a rail. He's working his ass off here. 
Dean: With the turtleneck.
John: With the turtleneck, yeah. Oh and just the sheer rage Katie O'Grady is radiating there. 
Chris: Now what time- what day- part of the shooting day was this? Did you make-?
John: This was morning.
Chris: This was, like, first thing?
Dean: Yeah, this was the first shot.
Chris: Is that a challenge to do the most emotional thing first?
Dean: It is, and especially because when we started shooting it we were in cloud cover and then halfway through the scene the sun came out. And so then trying to make that all work was really difficult. 
Dean: This, I thought, was surprisingly more emotional than I anticipated when we were there.
John: Well it was weird because when we were there, we couldn't quite get the staging, and they seemed like they were standing really far away. ‘Cause the deck was bigger than we thought.
Dean: Right.
John: And no- well this is the shot because by shooting this way, you get intimate, it feels like they're right on top of them. The other reverse kind of shows you the space.
Chris: I think it also parallels from season one, also-
John: Yeah it does, it does.
Chris: The scene where they’re standing around, really nicely.
Dean: But they're all disappointed in him, which is great. He sacrificing for them, but that's not what they want.
John: No. And he lied to them. And he's- you’re an idiot, I mean, that's really what Eliot’s thinking right there.
Chris: Yeah.
Dean: Yeah.
John: Like, ‘You know what? If you just talk to us.; I really never realized how [unintelligible] this episode is. 
Chris: It is.
John: It’s a big hero sacrifice, but it’s- you know he really broke the family. Again.
Chris: Yeah.
Dean: And Gina just nails this scene. I mean, we waited for this kiss for two seasons.
John: Yeah.
Dean: And it comes out, and she's crushed by it. It’s great.
John: Yeah. And again, and- you know this is a big hero moment in his head and she calls him on it. Because she- and this is what's interesting, Sophie Deveraux is a more advanced human being than Nate Ford is at this point. She went away, she took her space-
Chris: Right.
John: You know. 
Dean: And she lets him have it.
John: In the same way he let her have it at the end of season one, she's letting him have it at the end of season two. I love that look, by the way, that Eliot- Chris and Mark really set up the fact that they can't stand each other, really well.
Chris: And here, you know, the relationship between these two kicks in also. 
John: Yeah.
Chris: Between Nate and Sterling.
John: Yeah, the fact that he held it together- and they don't know, by the way. 
Chris: Right.
John: They have no idea when they're leaving.
Dean: That little look with Christian is just great.
John: And there's a camera mount on that helicopter.
Dean: That's been erased.
Chris: That's great.
John: ‘Who the hell is this guy?’ That- this is- you’re right, we wrote the ending first.
Chris: Yeah, I remember, this was-
Dean: He goes, ‘I don’t know.’
John: I remember this was the first thing ever.
Dean: This was the end of the arc. ‘I'm a thief.’
John: ‘And I'm a thief.’ I mean this is a callback to him saying I'm not a thief for two years. 
Dean: Right.
John: Wow. Thank god this is the last episode of the show.
Chris: And we’re not listening- and we can't hear it here in the commentary, but Joe Le Duca did- the orchestration for this is absolutely fantastic.
Dean: It's actually the first time he went and got a real orchestra. 
John: Yeah.
Dean: Went to Salt Lake City and recorded with a real orchestra, and I mean the scale of this is outstanding.
John: It's giant. 35- I think we had close to half a- 50 FBI agents here. And just cars, helicopters, and this is a big- this is a big hero moment, man. This is a film ending, you know.
Dean: Yeah, it really is.
John: This is it. I love his choice here, it's like, ‘And if I die, I'm totally cool with that.’
Chris: Oh here we go.
John: And he's bleeding out, can you see?
Dean: See the blood on the ground.
John: The blood- he's bleeding out. There's no guarantee Nate Ford will make it.
[Laughter]
Chris: Wow.
John: Which was fun actually shooting this, ‘cause Tim really loved this. And two days before we finished shooting, he turned to me and went, ‘Wait am I dead?’
[Laughter]
Chris: Oh that’s something.
Dean: Stay tuned for season three and you'll find out.
John: I know. No kidding, you'll find out.

Eliot sweet talking Nana into sharing her secret family recipes so he can get more vegetables into both Hardison and Parker.
I was just going to write a short headcanon post about this but then the first line popped into my mind along with a line about Eliot utilizing his retrieval skills, and then next thing I knew this was a fic. First in this fandom so go easy on me.

The carrot cake was the final straw.
Eliot knew his partners had terrible diets, okay? It was impossible for anyone to miss that, the way Hardison would just fill up any empty space in any fridge with orange soda, or Parker would get more cereal than was physically possible to store in the cupboard until there was at least one box permanently sitting on the table. He was well aware, and he’d been taking steps for a while to deal with matters.
He bought Hardison a fridge of his own - a mini fridge - and just poured out any soda he found anywhere else. He impressed upon Parker that just this shelf was for cereal and solemnly swore to her that he would never let it get beyond half-empty before filling it again. In the meantime, he filled the rest of his kitchen with actual ingredients, and always had a bowl of fruit out so they would have something healthy as an easy-to-grab snack. He didn’t put anything Parker liked hidden on a high shelf, because she’d find that fun; just small decoy portions while he kept most of his chocolate inside an old Wheat Thins box at the back of the cracker shelf. Speaking of chips, if he opened the bag of a good brand, then Hardison would gravitate toward it once he’d finished his Cheetos instead of going out to buy more, so that was just a matter of letting him buy one bag and then watching the level and timing when to get the other stuff out.
They both ate meat well enough, though Hardison liked to put in requests for absolutely sacrilegious misuses of various cuts; when Eliot humored him and actually destroyed his fish or brisket or whatever else as requested, he actually did seem to enjoy it, which was... very wrong, and disappointing, but at least the food was still going in his body. Parker quite liked some types of pasta now, and she seemed to enjoy when he put effort into plating things up nicely, but she was still a work in progress on any actual mealtime like a family (or a date. Not that Eliot hadn’t had to eat on the run plenty of times before, but - he’d had to. You don’t walk in to a table set for multiple healthy, delicious, innovative courses he’d been cooking for hours and then just grab bites as you wander around the room! He’d had wine out! Norah Jones playing softly in the background! No candles because he wasn’t an idiot, but it was clearly a romantic meal! What the hell kind of untrained toddler behaviour-).
Breakfast was easy, since they both liked eggs and there were a lot of ways to go from there. Breakfast potatoes were a hit too, and bacon, and they’d even eat oatmeal if he smothered it in sugar so that was something. For lunch, Hardison at least appreciated a good sandwich. Granted, usually only a stolen one because he didn’t like to make any kind of food at all that didn’t come out of a plastic package with microwave instructions on the side (and that had been an argument for the ages, the microwave one. Frankly most things could be heated better on a pan or in an oven, and those that were meant for the microwave were usually mass-produced garbage Hardison really didn’t need in his diet, but he disagreed vehemently and in the end that was one battle Eliot had definitively lost), but once Eliot caught on, he just started making double whatever he ate. Parker scoffed at the idea of lunch, for some reason, claiming that a granola bar or a brownie would get her through till dinner, but if he packed a lunchbox to look interesting and then gave it to her, she’d usually eat it. He just stocked up on bento boxes and made various kinds of colorful and/or childish looking foods and they came back mostly empty so that was good enough.
(Hardison claimed to have gotten jealous about it. Eliot was pretty certain he was making fun of him, so obviously he said he’d be caught dead before packing a lunch for him. He was a grown man and could do it himself.
“She’s a grown woman!” he complained, pointing at Parker, who was sitting perched on the back of an armchair nibbling away at her kraken bento - black noodle limbs, gyoza face, and grabbing a little egg scuba diver. “Sh-she should have to - this is discrimination!”
“Stay away from my octopus,” she squinted menacingly. When Hardison just glared mulishly back, she hugged the food closer to her chest. “It’s not for you, this is my little dead man.”
She popped the egg into her mouth and chewed, never breaking eye contact.
He turned back to Eliot to complain some more, but apparently that was only an attempt to fake her out, because he tried to grab the gyoza barehanded and she screeched, flinging her chopsticks at his face before fleeing across the room. Noodles got everywhere, Hardison had two little round bruises on his cheek the next morning, and somehow Eliot wound up packing everyone lunches every morning after that, and putting notes on them to label who each one went to.
He did not put sappy notes instead the boxes. He wasn’t their parent, okay. The notes inside the lunch were only ever reminders they needed for the con, like Parker’s character’s peanut allergy and how she needed to have the attack exactly two minutes after the mark joined her at the break table, or for Hardison to lock Lucille II behind him because even if he could track down someone who took off in her, he really shouldn’t have to again.)
Anyway, Eliot had something of a system down at this point. It wasn’t perfect, but it was workable for the most part. The one exception was vegetables, which they both hated. He’d tried to hide them several times, but they often picked them out or he just couldn’t stand to puree broccoli into a little garnish/dip just because his girlfriend and boyfriend were both giant babies about actually eating them whole. He had to eat the food too, and he enjoyed himself some veggies like any sane person would. They ate the ones hidden in their lunches almost half of the time, and sometimes other varieties, so he tried not to focus on that too much. Baby steps, he thought. First regular meals at all, then vegetables later.
But the carrot cake.
That was just too much.
It was cake. It was covered in cream cheese frosting. Carrot cake wasn’t anything but decadent, at least not the way Eliot made it for Hardison’s birthday. It was sweet, had just the right texture from the roasted pecans, the perfect hint of cinnamon and ginger. Not a complicated dish by any means, but pretty well near perfect, in Eliot’s no goddamn need to be humble opinion.
Hardison scrunched up his nose.
“Oh,” he said, not accepting the large slice Eliot tried to give him. “Eliot, I’m hoping this is a joke and you have my Red Velvet in the fridge?”
Parker let him hand her the plate, ate a bite, spat it out, then just started eating straight frosting off all the sides.
Eliot could feel his hands twitching. He very carefully set down the knife.
“What’s wrong with my cake?” he asked. Gave them the benefit of the doubt, and tried a bite: delicious.
“I mean... it’s a carrot cake,” Hardison said delicately, as though Eliot had made some kind of mistake and he felt a little bad pointing it out to him.
“So?”
“Carrot, Eliot.”
“Cake, HARDISON.”
“I like the frosting,” Parker interjected, and Eliot glanced over to her. She’d moved on from her own plate and was just scraping fingerfuls of frosting directly off the top of the cake. His cake. His cake for Hardison’s birthday, his beautiful cake -
“Babe, we love you but you gotta know vegetables don’t have any place in a dessert, that’s just wrong. C’mon, you really didn’t make me something else? Really?”
“THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU TWO?!” Eliot bellowed and stormed out of the apartment. He took the cake with him.

He brought it to Sophie and Nate, since they were in town and they weren’t insane like some people he knew.
“People you’ve, uh, chosen to dedicate the rest of your life to,” Nate pointed out around a mouthful. “I mean, you knew what they were like.”
“Oh, hush, Nate, don’t you get it? They’ve hurt Eliot’s feelings,” Sophie explained. She ate another bite, hummed approvingly, then waved her fork around to emphasize her words: “For Eliot, food is life. He wants them to lead long and healthy lives, he wants to live with them and show his love for them and keep them safe, and they just rejected that. It’s not all about the vegetables, y’know?”
Eliot was never sure whether he loved Sophie best or least of all.
“It’s definitely all about the vegetables,” he said, crossing his arms. The pair of them exchanged a look and then smiled at him warmly, like he’d just done something cute.
“Fine! Forget it,” he snarled, pushing himself roughly to his feet.
Behind him, Nate grunted the distinctive grunt of someone receiving a pointy elbow to the side, then cleared his throat.
“Okay, okay - wait! Wait, all right, I might have one idea.” When he turned back, Nate was rubbing thoughtfully at his chin. “You’ve tried featuring the veggies, right, and hiding them. I’m sure you’ve lectured them both to death about why they should be eating more vegetables, but that’s not going to work on them, is it, because there’s no connection there. Ad novitam is only going to get you so far, you need the, the personal touch, a little ad misericordiam if you will.”
“I am not telling them it makes me sad when they don’t eat their greens,” Eliot said firmly.
“But it does,” Sophie said lightly. She met his glare with a soft smile, and popped another bite of cake into her mouth.
“N- Well, no, obviously, but you’ve got to think it through, Eliot. Step away from the situation. How can you imbue the food itself with emotion? Not for you -” Nate spoke a little louder as Eliot started to answer, “you’re not our mark here. What kind of food, with vegetables, is going make them feel an emotional connection?”
Eliot subsided, frowning down at his own plate. That... was actually a pretty good point.
“Hm, my favorite is still that little restaurant in Paris, with the exquisite quiche. But, I suppose hard-scrambled eggs are a bit of a guilty pleasure,” Sophie mused. “Mum was never any good at cooking.”
“You too?” Nate turned to her. “Yeah, my dad could set water on fire. I remember eating from my meal plan at college - the cafeteria, mind you - thinking how good the food was in comparison.”
The solution clicked into place. (Of course it did, they’d practically hand-fed it to him.)
Eliot stood up and grabbed his coat.
“Oh, are you leaving, Eliot?” Sophie asked.
“Yeah,” he said, and turned back to smirk at them. “I’m gonna go steal Hardison’s childhood.”

Once upon a time, Eliot had been a retrieval specialist. You name it, he got it back. Sometimes it was actually a they or even a them, on occasion. He’d committed arson for a pair of scissors, had gathered up a scatted set of Fabergé eggs from seven different countries and two different mafias, had traveled more than once through airport security with a live frog in his pants. The business was a strange one, but he’d been the best at it. And in the years since he left, his life hadn’t exactly gotten less weird; Leverage saw to that.
Breaking into an old woman’s home and stealing a book of recipes would be easier than taking candy from a baby. Of course, Hardison made sure to keep his Nana safe, and from everything he’d heard she could certainly take care of herself, but still it wouldn’t be any great challenge for Eliot to just break in and take what he wanted. He could do it and leave without her ever knowing he’d even been there.
He rang the doorbell, and gave her his best smile when it swung open.
“Hello ma’am, I’m Eliot. Can I come in?”
(This was Hardison’s Nana, he’d never do wrong by her like that. Anyway, it wouldn’t even work. For this he needed her direct input.)
Nana was a short, soft-looking woman. Her hair was pushed back with a purple headband, and she wore loose comfortable pants and a clearly old t-shirt covered in child-sized paint handprints. She exuded a sort of maternal air that had Eliot relaxing into the visit almost despite himself. They’d only ever spoken on the phone, and he’d admittedly felt a little awkward about his plan due to that detail alone. He knew Hardison would love for them to meet her, but it just hadn’t happened yet - honestly, Eliot had been reluctant before, worried that she would find him wanting, and he’d always been relieved that no plans had crystallized into anything solid.
Certainly, despite welcoming him in and getting them all set up on the couch with home-made lemonades, it was clear she felt suspicious. A few minutes in, she dropped the small talk altogether to pin Eliot with a steely glare.
“I’m fairly certain Alec wanted to be here when we met so he could brag some more about how hot his partners are,” she said, making Eliot flush. “And I’m just as certain nothing has happened to him, or it wouldn’t be you here to tell me, so that just leaves me confused.”
She raised an eyebrow, letting him take his time responding.
He looked down at his lap. Ran a hand through his hair, feeling... not less confident that he’d get those recipes by the end of this visit, but certainly more bashful about it.
“Uh. Yes ma’am,” he said. Quickly corrected himself, remembering her insistence over the phone, “uh, Nana. See, he doesn’t actually... know I’m here...”
“I’d guessed as much,” she said wryly.
“Right. Um, I actually wanted to ask you something. There’s something I want to do for him - well, for them - but I need your help to do it right.”
She stared him down a moment longer. Then her eyes widened, and she sat back in her seat with a little gasp, hand over her heart.
“Oh, Eliot,” she said warmly, leaning forward again to grab his hand and hold it between hers, “Oh, sweet boy, of course he’ll say yes. You should hear the way he talks about you, Alec’s been head over heels for years. I may not have met Parker personally, but I’m sure she will too. You don’t have anything to worry about, trust me on that.”
“What?” he croaked. “I... w-what?”
His voice broke in his throat. He wanted to yank away but he felt frozen in place. He didn’t understand how she’d - okay, no, he could easily see how she would draw the wrong conclusions from this situation, but they were the wrong conclusions! He’d never even considered marriage since Aimee, let alone proposing to Parker and Hardison. It wasn’t like a three-way marriage was even legal, and even if it were he would never. It was too much - not too much commitment, he’d already promised the rest of his life to them both, but still too much, somehow. He’d never dare.
“I know Alec doesn’t think too much of the institution in general,” Nana said, waving a dismissive hand, “but if you do he’ll understand that. He might not need it but he won’t say no if you ask, hon. I can promise you that.”
Eliot meant to deny the very idea. Instead what came out of his mouth was a shaky:
“...Are you sure?”

Hardison’s Nana - his Nana too, she insisted, even after Eliot finally managed to clear up the misunderstanding - was truly a gem of a woman. He could see so much of who Hardison had turned out to be in her kindness, her cleverness, her sense of humor. She’d broken out the picture albums for him, and had even kindly let him keep one photo of a gaptoothed little Alec in a horrible bowl cut, grinning proudly and brandishing a blue ribbon next to his science project. To Eliot’s complete lack of surprise, he’d won every year with zero competition from his peers.
(He told her that he wanted the picture to make fun of Hardison with. It was true, but she still just patted him on the shoulder and told him to keep it. Didn’t say a word when he tucked it into his wallet with unnecessary care.)
They talked for a long time. She gave him a journal to copy directly from her personal recipe book, a lovely clothbound thing spattered with grease and burnt at one edge, smelling of spices and old paper; clearly well used. She told him it was passed down from her mother, who’d put in lots of her mother’s recipes. Eliot took notes as she talked him through every one. He had a good memory but he didn’t want to miss a thing, and her recipes as written were bare bones. He could cook a delicious meal from them easily enough, but it wouldn’t have her heart in it, not like what he wanted to make.
Just talking could only do so much, and eventually they found themselves in the kitchen, demonstrating techniques and favored spice blends. It was nice, just in and of itself. Eliot rarely got to talk shop with other cooks, and it had been a long time since he’d eaten anything home-made by someone else. Nana never went to school for this stuff, but clearly her long years of experience carried their own weight, because she knew what she was talking about. 
It was late in the night by the time Eliot left her house, feeling himself flush to his ears as she kissed him on the cheek before waving until he’d driven away. And this after wrapping him up in a tight, warm hug just inside the front door.
“Alec’s done well for himself,” she said, and winked. “Now, next time I want you to bring that young lady of yours as well, you hear me? Make that a promise.”
“I will,” he said.

It was nearly three AM by the time he got home. Parker crashed out of the dark the second he stepped inside, clinging to him as he caught her midair.
“You made Hardison sad on his birthday,” she told him sternly, and headbutted him hard on the temple. As he winced, she pressed her nose down against his shoulder and took a long sniff. “You smell like lemons.”
“You made me sad on Hardison’s birthday,” Eliot sighed. “I mean, mad.”
“Doesn’t matter, you made him sad so I’m not sorry,” she said, and snuggled close.
Eliot carried her through the apartment, avoiding bumping into any furniture through the ease of experience, and into the bedroom. Hardison was sprawled across the mattress, fast asleep with a frown.
Setting Parker down, Eliot got undressed and climbed into the bed. He scooted behind Hardison, leaning up on an elbow to swipe a gentle thumb over the furrow between his brows. It came back, so he wiped at it again, and kissed Alec’s shoulder when he huffed a little and his face relaxed. Eliot kissed him one more time, then lay down behind him with an arm draped over his side.
Rather than going around the bed to the free space on Hardison’s other side, Parker crammed herself onto the mattress right behind Eliot, pushing him further into Hardison and determinedly spooning him.
He craned his neck up to look at her in the dark. She met his gaze solemnly and squeezed tighter, slipping a leg between his.
Eliot fell asleep warm, entangled in the two loves of his life.

He woke stinking hot, still entangled but a lot less happy about it. This happened every time he slept in the middle; he didn’t know why he kept letting it happen. Every single time he’d wake abruptly, heart thrumming in an instinctive alert to something wrong... Only to realize that something was just Parker drooling on his ear, or Hardison’s morning breath in his face, and (every time) both their limbs all wrapped up around him and each other in a very sweet, sweaty, and constricting mess.
The first few times he’d suffered through it, unwilling to wake them. Still basking in the fact that he was here, that he got to be a part of this. But Hardison slept like the dead, and Parker had the ability to wake up and go back to sleep pretty much indefinitely, so Eliot had no compunctions about shoving them aside anymore. He also knew that the other two were night owls who would happily sleep in to eight or even ten if left undisturbed. Eliot woke habitually at five regardless of how late he’d been up, maybe six at the latest; morning snuggles just really weren’t practical.
He wriggled free, clambering over Parker and catching her when the bed dipped and she nearly fell to the floor. Her eyes shot open, clocked him, then dropped shut as she went right back to sleep. He left them there and went to go take a shower, then wandered into the kitchen, grabbing up his new cookbook from his jacket pocket on the way.
Eliot was operating on only a couple hours of sleep; Nana didn’t exactly live next door, and he was frankly lucky he’d got out the cake relatively early in the afternoon, to be able to catch her awake at all. It wasn’t like he’d ruined Hardison’s whole birthday, just that last part they’d set aside for the three of them. They had already hung out with Nate and Sophie in the morning, and Hardison had a long phone call with Nana even before that. Parker had even given Hardison her present: a little statuette originally from a museum in Delhi if Eliot wasn’t mistaken. It was some god or something, but bore a striking resemblance to an Ewok, a detail she’d correctly guessed Hardison would love. He’d been planning on giving his present after the cake, at which point they were going to, on Hardison’s specific request, have a very normal and boring date at home. There had been a lot of jobs lately, so that must have tied into his desire for domesticity - that and ‘birthday rights’ to force them to watch all his nerd movies and lose at various video games.
They hadn’t planned anything for today either, so it wasn’t like those plans couldn’t still happen... And in fact yesterday hadn’t even been Hardison’s real birthday, just the replacement day they’d agreed to celebrate on when a con ran through the actual day. But in the cold light of day he felt a lot more stupid about taking a vegetable-related risk on Hardison’s cake, and then reacting stupidly when they didn’t like it. To be fair, he hadn’t considered it a risk at all, hadn’t even been thinking of his ongoing quest to feed them better so much as the fact that carrot cakes were good and he knew Hardison liked cream cheese frosting - but still. Sophie may have hit the nail on the head, but it was still a stupid and immature nail to let get in the way like he’d done.
He had to at least try to make it up to him.
Accordingly, the breakfast casserole Eliot put together was about as far removed from a healthy meal as any non-dessert in Nana’s cookbook. A baked blueberry French toast creation with lots of sugar, it actually was more of a dessert than anything else. It also took hours in the fridge, but that was alright; not the first time Eliot getting up so much earlier came in handy.
He took the time that it spent in the fridge to clean the apartment. He got out his gift to Hardison, swept and mopped and watered all the plants. Did some laundry, meditated a bit. Pretty much just puttered around for hours, steadily feeling worse and worse about his outburst the day before. Parker had been accepting if not forgiving, and didn’t need an explanation; Hardison might not feel the same. Eliot didn’t expect him to; he was the one clearly in the wrong. He really couldn’t regret the outcome of meeting Nana and getting her recipes, but it should have been on any other day.
He managed to time the casserole just to when the other two got up; just as Eliot pulled it from the oven, Parker wandered into the room.
“Ooh!” she said, and approached with a clear intent to stick her fingers directly into the hot food. Eliot intercepted her with a glare and a whap with his oven-mitt. She retaliated with a vicious pinch to the back of his hand and grabbed a blueberry off the top, tossing it into her mouth and wincing as she burnt herself chewing it.
“Quit that, it’s Hardison’s,” he told her.
“Hardison!” Parker yelled in what appeared to be terror, because of course she would. “I need your help right now!”
He came tumbling into the room, still only half-dressed and clumsily wielding Parker’s taser at the couch. When he saw only the two of them calmly watching him, he attempted to hide it behind his back.
“Oh hey, what’s up everyone,” he said nonchalantly. “Breakfast? Awesome. Smells like something Nana used to make.”
Parker went over and kissed him as she stole the taser out of his hand. She held it up in front of his face.
“Mine,” she scolded.
“Hey, I was ready to defend your life,” Hardison said, mock-offended. “What, you want me to run into an ambush empty-handed? Come on, baby, look who you’re talking to.”
“If you’d let Eliot teach you MMA like me then -”
“Then what, you’d use it as an excuse to choke me out again? I know what you’re after, I recognize that look in your eyes -”
“Hey, come’n eat.” Eliot put two full plates of breakfast  casserole down on the island. He braced himself, ready for Hardison to keep giving him the silent treatment or outright call him out on his behavior.
It didn’t happen.
“Morning Eliot,” he said as he came over to grab a stool. He leaned across the island; when Eliot was too surprised to meet him halfway, he rolled his eyes and reached out a hand to grab his face and pull it close enough for a quick kiss. Then he plopped down into his seat, inhaling deeply at his food. “Oh man, this smells exactly like Nana’s Blueberry Thing, I loved that as a kid. How’d you know?”
Eliot slowly sank down from his tiptoes. His stomach hurt a little from being yanked up against the edge of the island, his lips still felt the impression of Hardison’s. He... really didn’t understand.
“Uh, Nana said you liked it best,” he replied a little too woodenly. Neither of his partners seemed to notice.
“You been talkin’ to her without me?” Hardison asked, before taking a bite and moaning. It wasn’t a sex moan - Eliot knew what those sounded like - but it was damn near. “Did you turn into her? What the hell, this is it, this is the Blueberry Thing!”
Parker was at her own plate the moment Eliot said Nana; she was always fascinated by any mention of the woman, and would probably taze him for meeting her first. Right now, she was digging into her own plate, eyes closed.
Eliot cut himself a serving too and sat down to eat with them. He felt tentative, somehow, embarrassed.
“Yeah,” he grunted. “Went to talk to her last night. Got some recipes.”
The food was good. Sweet, warm, filling; clearly a comfort meal. He dug in.
When he looked up, Parker and Hardison were both staring at him. She opened her mouth, paused, and then fell silent with a glance to Hardison. He was staring at Eliot, mouth open.
“What the hell, hon?”
Eliot clenched his jaw. He knew what he should say. He’d spent all morning prepping himself to say it.
“...You never opened my present,” he said instead.
Hardison squinted at him.
“Yeah, I wasn’t gonna without you there,” he said pointedly.
��Right, well, here,” Eliot said and shoved it his direction before going back to his food. He could feel them staring at him but didn’t lift his head, kept shoveling bite after bite into his mouth as he heard Hardison final tearing at the wrapping paper, grumbling incoherently to himself.
A moment later, the angry mumbles got louder when he opened the first box to reveal the second one.
By the time Hardison got down to the final layer, a small paper booklet six boxes in, Parker was snickering rudely and his muttering was about half swear-words. Eliot still didn’t look up, kept waiting until Hardison actually read the gift.
(He’d thought it would be funny, obviously. He’d thought it would be hilarious, to watch Hardison getting more and more irritated by the wrapping paper. And he knew the gift itself wasn’t anything much, but Eliot usually prided himself on being good at getting people things they didn’t know they wanted, or didn’t think they’d ever get. He knew it was childish and kind of stupid right from the jump, but money didn’t really mean too much to Hardison, and he was confident he’d love this.
After his behavior last night, he wasn’t so sure anymore. Immaturity took on a different tone right now.)
“‘Eliot Tickets,’“ he heard Hardison read off slowly, then - “no.”
He glanced up sharply, but it’d been a sound of delight. Hardison’s eyes were wide and he was flipping through the pages rapidly with an ever-widening grin.
“No nerd jokes for twenty-four hours, back massage, favorite food, favorite sex, get-out-of-scolding free, dessert for dinner, oh my god Comic-Con?! Get to play with your hair, get to pick your cover, computer lessons, videogames, sleeping in, what kind of goldmine is this -”
Parker leaned over his shoulder as he kept going, pointing out her favorites as they worked their way quickly through the rest of the little booklet. It wasn’t horrendously long, but long enough: one ticket for every year. Twenty-eight in all.
Twenty-nine, including the piece of paper Eliot had slipped in front of the last page at seven-thirty this morning, before carefully re-wrapping every box.
“‘One I’m sorry,’” Parker read out loud. She met Eliot’s eyes as she asked, “Are you gonna use it?”
Hardison hummed thoughtfully, then picked it up to reveal the last page.
“No, I’mma save this for just the right time,” he said, waving it in the air. He looked Eliot in the eye and smirked meaningfully. “You messed up, man, you didn’t put an expiration date on any of these.”
“Dammit,” Eliot grumbled, like he’d just realized.
(It hadn’t been a mistake.)
“Don’t need that right now anyway,” Hardison continued, tucking it back into the middle of the book. “This, on the other hand - this one I’m cashing in now.”
Eliot took the little piece of paper Hardison ripped free. He sighed.
“Really?”
“Hell yes, now get in here - and no complaining, them’s the rules you made your own self. You too, Parker, c’mere.”
Eliot stood up and rounded the island, halting with a sigh just before reaching Hardison, who stood to meet him. He ripped the coupon in half.
“All right, here goes.”
Tucking the pieces into his pocket, Eliot stepped forward into Hardison’s outstretched arms, tucking himself in close and hugging him back tightly. A moment later, he felt Parker collide with them both, one arm over his shoulders and a leg around his hips. He sighed again, this time into Hardison’s shoulder, and let himself sway when they did, a gentle rock back and forth.
He closed his eyes when they started to sting.
“Sorry,” he mumbled into Hardison’s shoulder after a long minute. “Shouldn’ta left.”
“That does not count, Eliot,” Hardison told him firmly, and didn’t let go. “I did not use my coupon, I still got my coupon, you aren’t getting out of anythin’ with that you hear me?”
Parker snickered behind him.
“Not getting out of anything at all,” she said, and squeezed tighter. “We’ve got you trapped.”

(The next time he fed them vegetables, it was a Nana recipe and Hardison ate without complaint. Parker ate because she wanted to know what it felt like to be a little Hardison, and proclaimed the experience ‘like one of my harnesses’ which was obviously a very positive review.
The next time he fed them vegetables and it wasn’t a Nana recipe, they exchanged a look and then each ate exactly half of their servings. The rest they snuck back onto Eliot’s plate one bite at a time like he wouldn’t notice. He let them get away with it and looked down at everyone’s empty plates afterward with a weird content feeling relaxing his shoulders.
The next time he saw Nana, her words on Hardison’s bragging proved embarrassingly correct. She and Parker got along like a house on fire, and if left alone too long would probably cause a house on fire, and Hardison just watched them with a giant grin like he didn’t see the danger. Nana asked Eliot if he’d considered what they talked about last time right in front of them both, proving beyond all doubt that she shared Hardison’s love of driving him goddamn crazy for fun.
The next carrot cake he made was for Sophie and Nate. He refused to call it a thank you, but she did and also asked him to make that little French quiche she’d talked about like she honestly expected “it had spinach, I think, something green anyway, it was very light, and some kind of unexpected spice too?” would be enough to go on. Nate was no help whatsoever.)

when i started shipping it: okay so i went deep into my archives and i found my first mixen gifset, here, from october 26, 2016. it is then followed by this gifset from october 28, 2016, a complete stroke of genius i’d forgotten about. and HERE is the first post i made about them while watching legends, also from october 28th, 2016. i’m assuming that the clip of her trying to kill him was released as a preview which is why the gifset predates the text post. so then in november 2016 is good it’s not really ramped up yet and then we get the chicago way and that, in a lot of ways, changed my life? for the better? unclear. am i being sarcastic? also unclear. there’s just so much about it that did me in. first the “i’m clyde that’s bonnie” because s3 of dusk had JUST ended and that was a RAW fucking nerve. just the exact shit i was looking for. the scene where mick puts his finger to his lips while looking at amaya’s mouth and you just know he’s internally like i am... going to hell. i am GOING to hell. amaya kissing him on the CHEEK? [mick’s certainty of going to hell intensifies] and the real piece de resistance was len descending from the ceiling shrieking in gay rage like. that’s what really solidified mick’s relationship with amaya to me: he was willing to defend her to literally, literally his husband. he says amaya is his ONLY friend because leonard is GONE, implying that amaya is len’s EQUAL in mick’s eyes. mick is a complex character and he’s actually very sensitive but when we had him in season 1, he came as a packaged set with len. and he grew and formed new relationships and listen we all know i can and will ship mick with anyone dominic purcell this is a threat but amaya is, in canon, not just implied by dominic’s choices for the character, the time where mick is declaring his affection for someone out loud. and i also want to reflect on like. leonard, be he real or be he a figment of mick’s mind, despite being WILDLY jealous of amaya, had one goal in that episode: to keep mick alive. like mick was so reckless in season two and with amaya he seems to finally almost want to... pull back? he tells leonard “i’ll be dead like you” which says he isn’t objecting to the idea of being dead, but that amaya is giving him something that makes life exciting, and he’d rather have that than fall into his old self-preservation instincts. you can MARK that mick starts trying to die less after the chicago way until len comes back in the world war i episode.  like i guess i started shipping mixen when they became the epitome of “god said love your enemy so i obeyed her and i loved myself” are you HAPPY? is this what you WANTED?

what makes me happy about them: as much as i’ve focused on amaya’s positive impact on mick i want to emphasize that this is a two way street because mick is someone who taught amaya to embrace herself and what makes her happy. amaya has so much pressure riding on her shoulders and mick is never deterred by it. amaya has always been brilliant beautiful incredible etc but when we first meet her in s2 she is so tightly wound and she is so in the mold of what she thinks she needs to be and what she thinks the legacy of the anansi totem requires of her and when she’s around mick she realizes she can be... amaya. just amaya. like did she say to mick “what would a criminal do” because she was being horny on main? yes. but she also did it because she was genuinely open to learning how he saw the world. like it’s truly incredible that amaya meets mick and in the span of 30 minutes is like actually, mick is the most interesting and enticing person i have ever met and  [mick’s certainty of going to hell intensifies] but actually there are just little things they do even when they don’t like each other that show a certain level of respect- mick tells amaya he’s not an idiot and amaya tells him not to call her “girlie” so amaya actually spends the rest of their relationship uplifting mick’s ideas and his accomplishments and mick POINTEDLY never gives amaya a nickname. the nickname one is especially funny bc i geniunely think she just didn’t like “girlie” and may have been fine with a different nickname but like. the fact that mick remembers to NOT give her a nickname EVER when everyone else gets one? the way he paid attention to amaya and respected what she was saying? the way they could be open with each other? like okay they weren’t canon-canon but a part of me is glad bc. this ship was originally marc’s idea and what is legends s2 if not phil and marc fighting for control of the story like the one ring? if marc had been allowed to make them romantic i fear he would’ve done his normal bullshit that he does with his couples where basically mick never changes in a positive way and keeps chipping away at parts of amaya until she feels like she is at “his level” and then he essentially takes over the rest of the parts of her life he hadn’t already taken control of and just, disgusting. like let me be clear on mick rory’s worst day he is still a better person than oliver queen on his best day i don’t care if he’s roasting people alive he is STILL a better person. but with that relationship choice being taken out of marc’s hands, we instead get a relationship where amaya offers mick the starting blocks to build himself UP, and he takes them and is able to keep building himself even without fully relying on her. when he tells her in season 3 “we’ve all done things we’re not proud of” and she just brightens so immediately, and the same thing happens in the pirate episode - and he is able to do these things for her because he let her help him, but did not make her his only lifeline. the person mick is in s3 onward is a person he feels better about being because amaya has always seen good in him and like. not to be dramatic but i am literally, literally crumbling into ash as we speak

what makes me sad about them: FROM SEASON 4 ONWARD SHE ISN’T THERE ANYMORE AND MICK IS JUST LEFT WITH ALL THE FUCKING EMOTIONS SHE MADE HIM FEEL AND THE WAYS SHE HELPED HIM AND ALL HE CAN DO IS TRY TO KEEP HER ALIVE, IN HIS MIND AT LEAST, BY HELPING PEOPLE (CHARLIE AND MONA) THE WAY AMAYA HELPED HIM.

things done in fanfic that annoys me: i have no issue with mixen being in fic with OTHER ships but to my fucking detriment it always seems to be a secondary pairing in captain canary fics and like 1. hate crime 2. mick is a bisexual he can have a husband and a wife he can have them at the same time he can have them at separate times but if you’re writing capcan i’m assuming you have a heterosexual agenda and i want that kept away from ships i like at ALL times

things I look for in fanfic: a genuine understanding of mick’s character. he can be kind of tricky to strike a balance with but you can just tell when he’s being written too aggressively or when he’s being written just as too much of a bastard or a former criminal and like, i also look for amaya not being helpless and emotional bc quite frankly mick is way more expressive emotionally than amaya and it is so vital that this is understood. also if it’s sad i like to read it and then cry myself to sleep

who i’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: OKAY FINE nate for either. nate for both! final ot3 of nate/amaya/mick is good, pure, canon supported, and legally required. but also amaya with zari 1.0 and mick with ray or, honestly? zari 2.0. DON’T @ ME

My happily ever after for them: they just get to like. live life together. mick takes in ese as one of his own and amaya does the same for lita and they have a 3rd child together that’s in the bible look it up but like. not giving up the time traveling life and the heroics and the adventures fully but being a family even when their kids grow up and they can be old together even if it’s them popping on and off the waverider sometimes together sometimes they do their own thing always put the kids first and sure mick has 22 wonderful years on amaya but he’s on a timeship he can wait for her to catch up so they can get old-old together. also nate is there romantically, sexually, raising the children, let’s have mick and nate make a fourth child, this is absolutely non-negotiable

Saving Face | Chapter 1: New Beginnings
authors note: hope this fic makes sense, i’ve been listening to some sad shit anyway enjoy 😊

summary: new beginnings turns to being the savior.

“Yo, who’s that?” JJ points out to the tan girl who was wearing a blue v-neck floral dress and carrying boxes in her hands as she headed inside the house. She was pretty, dark brown eyes, black wavy hair and a cute nose. The color blue did wonders on her beautiful tan skin. JJ felt a interest in her.
Weird. He thought.
John B and Pope look to the direction JJ was looking at.
“Oh shit! No fucking way!” Pope exclaims struggling to straighten himself on the passenger seat of John B’s van. The guys were waiting outside of Kie’s house for their afternoon hangout at the chateau. John B and JJ furrowed their eyebrows.
“What’s up with you?” John B asks curious on his best friend action.
“That’s Y/N Romano Cortes. Her family is filthy rich.” Pope explains, before continuing. “Richer than the Cameron’s, hell richer than all the fucking Kooks in figure 8.”
JJ looks back at you and he sees you laughing and joking around with a guy as both of you take boxes back inside the house again. “How filthy rich are we talking about?” JJ looks back at Pope.
“Her mom, Marina Vos Wolf is a businesswoman. Her father is the Axel Romano Cortes,” Pope pauses as he motions his two best friends to get close. John B and JJ glance at each other shrugging it off and lowering their heads at the same level as Pope’. “Rumors say he’s some type of drug lord or some shit.” Pope whispers.
JJ scoffs removing himself from the circle. “Yeah right. How would you know that? And how the hell do you know all this stuff?” JJ takes his lighter, playing with the flicker.
Pope gives an awkward laugh which made the corner of his lips to rise up. “I might have eavesdropped when I saw them having a conversation with the Cameron’s at The Wreck when I was helping Kie clean up.”
“And you heard him say he sells drugs?” John B says jokingly.
“No! I just heard Ward say how they should work together and help each other out and—” Pope was cut off by the slide door of the van being open.
“What’s up dudes.” Kie makes herself inside the van and sits down. The three dorks say their hello, before John B starts the car and head to his place. Forgetting about the conversation the three boys shared.

“Kie, do you by any chance know who’s Y/N Romano Cortes?” JJ asks. JJ seemed too interesting on her and the fact that her father might be a drug lord makes it more interesting.
“Oh, yeah her family bought the house across from ours. She came over to my house one time to introduce herself and then I saw her at the Wreck with the Cameron’s. Why?” Kie takes a sip of her cold beer. It was just JJ and Kie outside of the chateau as John B and Pope were inside.
JJ takes out a joint from his cargo pants, bringing it to his lips holding it in place. “Have you met her parents?”
“Just her mom...quite nice, very friendly,” Kie gives a soft chuckle before saying, “for a kook family.”
JJ now takes his lighter and lights up his joint taking a hit. He gesture the joint to Kie, earning a no from her. “Got to be sober, have to be home. Dad says he wants us to have a family dinner with the Cortes.”
“Wait what? Today?”
“At exactly,” Kie takes out her phone from her back pocket her eyes widen, “shit! like exactly right now. i gotta go. I need a ride.”
JJ is not in the right state of my mind to drive, being high as hell right now.
“John B! Kie needs a ride back home!” JJ calls out. John B comes out already with his keys.

Monday, afternoon.
“Mija, just listen to your father please?” Your mom pleads. Your parents called you for a family meeting that was taking place at your fathers office room. Your two older brothers were sitting on the couch, drinking their vodka with ice.
You roll your eyes finally taking a seat on the opposite side of your father’s desk your mother standing next to him as his supporter. “What’s this is about?”
“Are you okay with being on a arranged marriage?” Your father bluntly asks.
You felt your eyes bulged at the crazy ass question your father just asked. “Are you fucking kidding me?”
Your mother gives you look, a warning to behave your self. She never liked your foul language.
“Her? In a arranged marriage? Father have you gotten mad?” Your oldest brother, Nate scoffs at the ridiculous idea your lunatic father has thought of.
“Nate. You shouldn’t talk to me like that. Remember I’m the one who gets to decide who gets to run my business.” Your father warns your brother. Your father was very strict and intimidating when it came with work.
“Nate, just back off okay I got this.” You always liked that Nate got your back no matter what. He doesn’t like it when your father belittles you.
“Father I appreciate your concern, but don’t you think I’m too young to be in a arranged marriage?” You softly spoke. You were just sixteen, marriage is not on your mind. Parties, hanging out with friends, going to movies, crushes all that teenage stuff is in your mind not this adult shit.
“Obviously you’re not going to marry now...but once you are 18 you’d be ready, so that’s why I asked Ward Cameron to ask his son if he can agree with it.” Your father opens his left drawer revealing a big file of paperwork which you assume was a contract between you and the Cameron’s. This made your blood boil, he actually thinks you’d agree with it.
“You being fucking serious!?” you yell aggressively standing up, making the chair move back.
“Y/N!” your mother warns. You look at her and then at your father.
“This is bullshit and you fucking know it! You’re just trying to save face because you don’t want to be known as the drug lord who gets their money selling drugs. Fuck your company!” Your breathing was heavy as your chest was rising up and down. “Fuck you!” You ran out of your father’s office, you heard your name being called out. You got your car keys needing some space and fresh air.
This cannot be happening.

I actually thought about making your best friend just Nathan? But, for the sake of routine and creativity, let's shake it up a bit and create another sibling– a middle Drake sister? 👀👀
-First of all, being best friends with a Drake means that you have to be wild and absolutely unhinged to keep up.
-Your best friend– who happens to be the middle sister of two impossible brothers – rarely ever experienced a dull moment.
-Since you were the same, you had no problem whatsoever with tagging along with her, wherever she might go.
-However, she was just as much of an adrenalin junkie as her two brothers, which means she very often traveled around and was usually up to her usual treasure-hunting, museum-looting, lost-city-plundering shenanigans with either her two brothers, just one of them, Sullivan, or Chloe Frazer.
-And as a woman who only had a couple of odd jobs with her, Nathan, Elena, and Sullivan for the sole purpose of being "the tech gal in the chair", you didn't tag along in most of those.
-In fact, you had a pretty stable job in a computer shop as an I.T. manager and technician.
-Sounds boring, but is quite lucrative at times.
-And, sure, you'd met Nathan. You thought he was an absolute sweetheart and a joy to be around. Sometimes, though, when he didn't listen to your advice that would prevent him from getting his neck wrung, he was positively infuriating.
-Sam, though..
-You'd heard of the infamous older brother. You saw some of his pictures with his younger sister and brother, too, but they were about sixteen-year-old photographs, taken way before he was thrown in Panama and got locked up for thirteen years..
-Sometimes, you heard your best friend talking to him on the phone, but it'd be very brief and happened once every blue moon.
-Her explanation behind the very superficial relationship was that Sam didn't really share such a strong bond with her. They almost always fought and never once did they go a day without flipping each other off at least a thousand times.
-It was because their sister was a bit more reasonable when it came to life or death. She might've been wild at parties and great at rock-climbing or swinging off a cliff, but when odds were against her, she knew when to turn back and call it quits.
-A trait that – obviously – Sam did not have.
-She loved him, though, and she would do anything for him and so would he. Anytime. No questions asked.
-In fact, whenever she asked him to send her something from Boston to New Orleans, he'd do it without hesitation and would even leave a small note saying how he'd missed her and would like to catch up soon.
-So you had a pretty basic idea of who Sam Drake was, but you hadn't actually had the privilege of seeing him in person.
-One day, however, your best friend called and invited you over to her place that evening because she was holding a huge family gathering.
-"Everyone's gonna be there!", she'd told you.
-You were always up for a good backyard barbecue party with people you haven't seen in years. You knew for a fact that when she said 'everyone', she literally meant everyone.
-Nate, Elena, Cassie, Chloe, Sullivan, Charlie, and Nadine were all going to attend and the only missing person was you– the life of the party and the most theatrical comedian in the bunch.
-So not only did your friend want you there, but everyone said that they'd come only if you did and you couldn't disappoint them.
-And there you were, standing at the head of the table in the large pergola of your friend's yard, a glass of wine in your hand as you entertained and told a story of something stupid that'd happened to you with a celebrity customer that almost cost you your career. The table shook as all your buddies roared in laughter, some struggling to breathe and others not bothering to try and sound respectable– snorting away to their hearts' content and slamming the table or sinking into their chairs.
-A huge grin played on your lips before you brought your glass up to take a sip of wine, waiting for your friends to calm down, and then, your best friend suddenly perked up, her eyes as wide as the growing smile on her face.
-"Is that..?"
-Your brows pull in confusion and you look in the direction that everyone was looking towards and you saw a tall, broad man, a duffel in one hand while the other remained in the pocket of his deep blue jeans.
-Your wine remained in your mouth a little and as he stepped closer, a sheepish smile on his face, you swallowed thickly, your eyes widening.
-"Sam!", his sister yelled, jumping from her chair to break a sprint towards him and collide against his chest, making him stumble back a little, a chuckle escaping him as he rubbed her back.
-Everyone rushed to him, giving hugs and serenading him with 'It's so good to see you's. He even picked up his twelve-year-old niece, spun her around, and attacked her cheek with kisses, telling her how much he's missed her and that he had a small gift for her in his bag that he brought back from his most recent travel.
-And then, your best friend and his sister dragged you from your frozen position, putting you in front of him.
-"This is (y/n)!", she excitedly introduced you, "Remember? I told you all about her."
-Sam paused for a second and you did your best to look confident but something about him was so alluring and knee-buckling that it was so hard not to see flustered, especially that he gave you what seemed to be a ghost of a smirk.
-"M'yeah.", he replied, shaking your hand gently, "She wouldn't shut up about you." He pointed out, making his sister pout and gently nudge his arm.
-And, then, out of nowhere, your confident demeanor was back, "I must be greater than I thought, then.", you quickly quipped, having literally no clue where that came from.
-Sam raised an interested brow, "I'll bet." He replied, his voice dropping an octave and his eyes boring into yours.
-Maybe it was the wine, but you wanted nothing more but to jump him at that very moment.
-You two broke the staring game when Nathan cleared his throat and clapped his hands, rubbing them together, "So who's up for some barbecue, huh?"
-Everyone murmured in agreement and they quickly went back to their designated seats.
-You hadn't even noticed that your hand was still in Sam's until everyone was gone from around you and you quickly pulled it away, unable to make eye contact with the incredibly handsome man before you, just sticking to looking down at the small portion of wine left in your glass.
-"C'mon and sit next to me.", Sam suddenly said, making your eyes snap up at him in surprise, "I wanna get to know you better.", he clarified, sending you a sly smirk before brushing past you, making sure that his shoulder gently nudged yours.
-You looked at him as he confidently sauntered away, your mouth agape but an amused smile still present.
-"I warn you..", you whipped your head to see your best friend grinning at you, bemused by the whole scene that'd unfolded before her eyes. She walked towards you, "He'll break your heart.", she shook her head, taking a sip out of her beer.
-A snort left you and you shook your head, "He's.. not my type..", you mutter, downing the last drops of red wine afterwards as if to wash down the blatant lie that you'd just told.
-"Mm-hmm..", she gave you a sassy look and you rolled your eyes, gently kicking her along, telling her to shut up and get a move on.
-When you made it to the table, Sam looked up at you and smiled cordially, patting the chair next to him.
-You sat down next to him, and immediately, the chattering around the table began, and you were back to being your funny, confident self, captivating everyone with your brilliant story-telling and impeccable impressions that left everyone keeling over and laughing.
-Sam was a funny guy as well. He'd throw a few comments here and there that made your stories even funnier.
-You laughed together a few times and most of the time, his eyes were on you. He'd laugh and grin and nod along while sipping on his beer sometimes, but other than that, he was fully enamored with you.
-Not only were you attractive and witty, but also funny and really passionate, which was a dangerous mix that had Sam immediately sold.
-Everyone went to get their grilling on and were shoving their faces with hotdogs. Charlie and Nathan had an eating contest while Cassie filmed it with her camera, giggling all the while.
-So everyone was gathered in different areas, sometimes joining in on others' conversations or just sticking to their own, intimate ones.
-Your best friend was immersed in a conversation with Charlie, who'd won the hotdog eating contest and wasn't as whoozy as Nathan was. Charlie also happened to be her ex-boyfriend, but they were on great terms, even after they'd broken it off.
-And there you were with Sam, on the garden swing, keeping a good, friendly distance between each other, but somehow, the looks you shared suggested otherwise.
-You told him stories he needed to hear to have an idea about who you were as a person. You told him how you met Nate and his sister and he pretended not to know any of the information you spilt. He only listened to you intently because the way you pieced your stories was so interesting and your voice was captivating and so were your over-the-top hand gestures.
-He just loved listening to you.
-And the two of you didn't notice the hours go by, only absentmindedly bidding farewell to the friends who left.
-And soon, it was only the two of you, chatting away, laughing and sighing wistfully at memories.
-"You two are so indiscreet.", you and Sam look up at his sister, who had her hands in the pockets of her hoodie, a smirk on her face, "Everyone noticed."
-"Noticed?", Sam asked, raising a brow and narrowing his eyes.
-She scoffed, "Uh, yeah. You two lovebirds are so obvious."
-"A-ha. M'kay. Good talk.", Sam gave her a wry smile, further confirming his sister's suspicion.
-"He likes you but he's too pussy to admit it.", She told you, making you chuckle, the heat creeping up your neck again to make you look down in hopes of concealing your embarrassment.
-"Shut up or else.", Sam warned, leaning forward on the swing, as if he was preparing to pounce on his sister.
-But she ignored him and kept her eyes on you, "Remember what I told you..~", she taunted before stretching and looking at Sam, "You stayin' here?"
-Sam glared, "Do I have any other choice?" He asked in a "duh" tone.
-She yawned and nodded, scratching the back of her neck and stretching tiredly, "Okay, well..", a deep sigh left her as she moved her arms around to stretch her muscles, "I'm turnin' over."
-You cleared your throat and gently smacked your thighs before getting up, "I, uhh.. better get goin', too.", you sent Sam a warm smile, "It's gettin' kinda late."
-He looked up at you with his starry, puppy eyes before standing to tower over you, wiping his hands against the sides of his thighs, "Yeah, uhh..", he paused for a second, "Want me to walk you?"
-Yeah, you did. And you almost approved before you closed your mouth again and closed your eyes, breathing out a soft chuckle at your own ridiculousness, "No, I.. came over here in my car.", you told him and he nodded, his lips pursing to a thin smile.
-"Ugh, get it over with!", his sister complained, looking back and forth between the two of you, irked by the palpable tension in the air.
-Sam quickly sent her a death glare, "Do you mind?", he warned behind clenched teeth.
-She rolled her eyes and backtracked, "As if me leaving's gonna grow you any balls..", she mumbled, but Sam completely heard her and shook his head in dismay as you chuckled at their antics, watching her walk towards her front door and slip inside.
-When you looked back at Sam, his eyes were already on you and you smiled at him while he reciprocated it with a slightly awkward one, "Guess this is the part where I ask you out, huh..?", he spoke lowly, scratching his cheek and averting his gaze from yours for a second.
-You tilted your head, "Guess so..", you pushed your hand in your pocket and pulled out a pen, "Gimme your hand."
-Sam raised a brow but did so anyway and you grabbed his hand, turning it so you could see the back of it and scribbled down with the ink on his skin.
-"There." You let go and he looked at his hand, smiling when he found that you wrote your phone number, "Call me."
-He chuckled as he looked back up at you, "Will do."
-You paused for a second and, just to make up for the time you weren't going to be together in, you stood on your toes and pulled him in, planting a gently, chaste kiss on his cheek before pulling away, smiling at him warmly when you saw his fingers gently ghosting the area where your lips pressed against his skin.
-"See you 'round.", you winked at him and backed away, turning around to leave.
-Sam watched you, almost bewitched by the way you made him feel. His eyes followed you intently and took note of everything: the sway of your hips and your curves and legs and everything.
-But, suddenly, he called out for you when he remembered something, stopping you in your tracks. You looked back at him, raising a curious brow, "What'd she tell you about me earlier?"
-You paused for a few seconds, a smirk playing on your lips as you realized what he was referring to, "Nothing.", you waved him off, "Just don't break my heart!", you jut a finger at him, playfully warning him with a glare that caused him to chuckle.
-"No promises."
-But he'd be lying if he didn't admit that anyone who'd break your heart would be a complete and utter ungrateful idiot.

“Hey Jenna!” Bobby jogs over to join her as she walks back in through the front door, and she raises an eyebrow at his cheerier-than-usual demeanor.
“Did I miss anything while I was away?” she asks, returning his smile all the same because his happiness is infectious
2. love or money (litg: bobby/mc)
Bobby’s eyes cracked open, peering into the darkness like every other morning. He always woke up before the lights came on. Even after a month in the Villa, for a split second he forgot where he was and a pang of panic shot through him when he felt Amanda shift beside him before the last twenty-nine days came flooding back to him, and he allowed himself the tiniest of smug smirks.
3. when bobby met lani (litg: bobby/mc) explicit, minors dni
The beer's cheap and nasty, the bouncers are more interested in hitting on the girls coming through the door than actually providing any kind of security detail, and the male talent is… subpar. The music's half okay though, Lani thinks to herself as she chokes down the last of the God awful beer she'd ordered. The barman, who's barely taken his eyes off of her since she sat down, nods toward her empty bottle with his eyebrows raised.

His phone beeping and vibrating across Tash's nightstand woke Bobby up. He groaned and squinted at it, the small light flashing in the corner indicating a text message. He heard Tash groan from where her face was pressed into his back as he reached out for it.
"What're you doing?" she murmured as she shifted to lay her head on his chest when he rolled onto his back, squeezing her eyes closed against the sudden light.
"I got a text, sorry."
"How much did it take for you not to yell that?"
He felt her grin against him and chuckled, "not as much as it used to."
5. keep on running, chapter 8 (litg: bobby/god knows honestly the boy was a ho)
Bobby slips his phone, keys and wallet into his pockets and steps out from behind the counter of the music store, ready to head home, but stops short when he sees Gary standing just inside the door waiting for him. He offers a small smile, which Bobby doesn’t return as he tries to walk past him and out onto the street. Gary’s arm shoots out, his hand on Bobby’s chest to stop him from moving, and he sighs and looks over at him.
6. while the cats are away, chapter 3 (litg: bobby&f!oc)
As usual Bobby was the first to wake up, and had quietly made his way to the bathroom to shower and get ready for the day while he had a few moments of peace. By the time he was done and heading back out to the bedroom, he was passing some of the others on their way to the bathroom. Tash was perched up on the edge of their bed waiting for him, holding a cup out to him as he made his way closer to the bed.

Noah sat at their usual booth in the back of the bar, running his finger around the rim of his glass before letting out a sigh and checking the time on his phone again. He’d arrived early so he knew he had no business being impatient, but he’d needed to get out of that damn house, away from Hope.
It had been bad enough when they’d been playing nice. Watching her smile to his face while knowing that she was more than likely trashing him to whoever would listen as soon as his back was turned. Not that he had a right to be pissed off about that lately; he’d been doing the same thing for the last few weeks. But since signing the divorce papers, Hope had become a she-devil straight from the depths of Hell.
8. 25 (holi)days of wayhaven, day 31 (twc: adam/f!detective)
They’ve come a long way, and both of them feel it whenever they’re together. A long way from Jordan deliberately riling him up because she knew that just about everything she did irritated him. A long way from Adam going out of his way to spend as little time with her as possible.
It’s taken them a long time to realise that they were doing these things - leaning into their dislike for each other - as a way to distract themselves from the fact that they have always liked each other. Maybe they’ve always loved each other, though neither of them are willing to say that out loud.
9. untitled (twc: felix/f!detective)
Felix can't sit still. It's not as though it's unusual for him by any means, but it seems to be exaggerated when he's spent the last six hours in a place where there is literally nothing to do.
He's slumped on the chair beside the hospital bed, slouched down so low that his ass isn't even on the seat anymore, one of his legs jiggling up and down and both hands drumming erratically on his knees.
He lets out an impatient sigh and sits upright again, taking his hat off and running a hand through his hair.
10. sick like me, chapter 20 (litg: bobby/mc) explicit, minors dni
It had happened slowly, so slowly that if Lani hadn’t found herself (mostly) weirdly excited about it she might not have even noticed that it was happening. But Bobby was most definitely moving in, slowly but surely. It started with little things, a change of clothes here and there, some toiletries, until she was helping him sell off some of his bigger furniture, stuff that they both knew wouldn’t fit into Lani’s apartment.
After a few weeks, the two of them stood in the middle of what used to be his living room but was now nothing more than an empty space, as Bobby turned his keys over and over in his hand.
11. fire meet gasoline, chapter 4 (twc: morgan/m!oc)
She'd expected him to dress down a little, seeing that they are likely venturing into a sewer this morning. But all that's missing is his jacket; he's still wearing his usual long sleeve dress shirt and vest though his sleeves have been partially folded back, revealing the smallest glimpse of a tattoo on the outside of his right forearm.
"You know you're probably going to get covered in crap, right?"
"Wrong. But if you want to keep doubting me, go right ahead," he grins an obnoxiously cocky grin at her before turning and heading around the warehouse towards the sewers.
12. 28 dates with unit bravo, day 10 (twc: morgan/m!oc)
She doesn't like him. He's hot, that's all. And kind of cocky and kind of an asshole and what can she say? Morgan's into it. Maybe it's because he's the same as her; not relationship material by a long shot, but she has a feeling he knows his way around the bedroom. Probably the kitchen, bathroom and any number of outdoor locations as well. That, and he’s hot.
13. untitled (twc: adam/f!detective)
He can hear her pacing the hall outside of his room. She pauses every time she passes his door, and everytime she does he tenses, only to relax again just slightly when she returns to pacing.
Part of him wants to throw his door open and drag her into his room. Another part wants to stick his head out the door and order her to return to her room and stop shuffling around outside of his. But a part bigger than both of them makes him stay put, sitting on the edge of his bed and carefully unlacing his boots.
14. luck of the unit, day 20 (twc: adam/f!detective)
"Say another one!" Jordan can barely get the words out between gasps of laughter, only becoming more hysterical every time she catches a glimpse of the unimpressed expression on Adam’s face.
“This is hardly the best use of your time here,” he points out, pausing to gesture around the study, “you are supposed to be studying.”
“I am studying, I’m learning a foreign language,” she insists with a defiant nod, and when his shoulders sag in defeat she knows she’s got him. “Come on, another one.”
15. untitled (tanner, not fanfic)
"Does it hurt?"
"Nah."
"Liar."
Tanner pauses for a moment, unable to hold back a wince when the tattooist starts again. "Little bit."
Skylar grins at him and sits up straight in the seat again, smiling smugly at him before spinning the seat and herself around in a circle.
"Dad's gonna kill you," she points out when she finally stops herself from spinning, and Tanner rolls his eyes at her.
16. echoes in the forest, chapter 13 (twc: adam/f!detective)
“I got a bad feeling about this,” Felix murmurs quietly, trudging along between Nate and Mason. Jordan and Adam are walking up ahead close by the boy as he continues wandering through the forest.
“You mean you haven’t felt that way since we got here?” Mason scoffs, not bothering to lift his eyes from the ground in front of him.
“Yeah, but worse now,” Felix answers, and Nate places a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
“It will be alright,” he tries, but somehow Felix doesn’t find himself as reassured as he usually does when Nate attempts to comfort him.
oop, didn’t quite make 20. and jfc did i have to dive down to the bottom of the barrel to get what i did, some of these were almost a year ago. i’m noticing now that i start with a character’s name more often than not. honestly i don’t think i can pick a favourite, i’ve been thinking on it for like 15 minutes now and i honestly dunno.
and i know some of you think that you know everything that i have written even if it hasn’t been/isn’t to be posted... and i know that seeing this list of untitleds, you may be surprised and i’m sorry lol.

Warning(s): Homophobia from family/community, fear/anxiety, angst
Summary: It had all been simple... and then (Y/n) met Zari. Everything that (Y/n) had known went completely out the window. Now, (Y/n) is left in a state of confusion and fear... with Zari being the only thing that seems to be right.
Author’s Note: This is inspired by “Would You Come Home?” by Tyler Blackburn (one of the sweetest songs I’ve ever heard in my life)

I should’ve known better when someone knocked on my door at 2 in the morning. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy seeing the Legends... they just showed up at the prime sleeping time. They always wanted help, saying that I could save them. I always went along.
“What is it this time,” I asked as I pulled the door open. 
Sara was standing in the front. Ray was right behind her, a guilty look on his face. Zari was next to Ray. She waved at me when we locked eyes. The other Legends were all grouped close to them. 
“There’s a bit of a problem back in 17th Century London,” Sara explained. “Care to join us? We have a change of clothes on the Waverider.”
“Let me slip some shoes on,” I grumbled. I grabbed the slippers that I kept by the door before following them out. “Let’s get this done.”
**Time Skip**
Mission accomplished. End of the world avoided. No lives lost. Perfect outcome, if you ask me. I let out a loud yawn as we walked back to the Waverider.
“Was the mission that rough,” Nate asked.
“It’s still really early in the morning for me,” I replied. “I am exhausted.”
“Well, we better get you back to bed then,” Zari wrapped her arm around my shoulders so she could guide me onboard. 
I’m pretty sure I fell asleep as soon as I hit the chair. Sara had to shake me awake when we got back to my time. I nodded to whatever she said, pulling myself out of my chair.
“I can walk (Y/n) home,” I stared at Zari for a second. “Is that alright?”
I nodded silently. I followed her out and continued my silence on the way to my house.
I couldn’t explain my feelings for Zari. She was amazing and so caring. I thought we were just really good friends but... something changed. Now, I thought of her and just smiled. I would blush whenever she gave me too much attention. I would get nervous but feel completely at peace whenever she touched me. 
The whole idea made me nervous. I knew how my family... and some of my friends... would react to something like this. The idea shot fear into my stomach and dread into my heart. It made me feel guilty every time I looked at Zari as more than a friend.
“Umm... thank you,” I whispered as we got to my door. “Y’know, for walking me home.”
“You’re welcome,” she shrugged, indicating that it wasn’t a big deal. 
Maybe for her, I spent the whole walk back with warm cheeks and an itch to hold her hand. 
“Well... I’ll see you the next time that the Legends need help,” I bit my lip nervously.
“Yeah,” she smiled. I was going to turn around and go inside but I was stopped by Zari’s hand on my wrist. “Can I try something?”
“S-Sure,” I nodded.
My breath caught in my throat when she leaned in. The moment only lasted a few seconds. It was a small peck on the lips. She pulled away and left so I couldn’t see her reaction. But I was in a whole different mindset. My lips felt like they were tingling. The breath had been knocked out of me.
Time didn’t register for me as I walked inside. I felt like it was all going too fast and too slow all at once. My mind only focused again once I had laid under my covers. 
Then, no matter how much I had been told it was wrong... I smiled. I couldn’t help it. A wave of emotions pushed every thought away and I smiled. I smiled so wide that I thought it was going to hurt. 
**Time Skip**
That was the start of it all. That was when Zari and I started being together. It was... interesting.
We didn’t stop being romantic after that night. Quite the opposite, we had been doing this for quite a while... undetected. It was all just private. Sometimes we would stray behind the group and hold hand... or interlock pinkies because it was more subtle. Some things were more reckless.
Zari would always walk me back from the Waverider. It started with me stopping her around the corner with one last kiss. Then, it was hidden behind the hedges a house down the road. Then, I was pulling Zari over to the side of the front deck, completely out of view of the front living room.
“Come stay with me,” Zari said after I had pulled away from one of those hidden kisses. My eyes went wide. “On the Waverider. It would be amazing.”
“Zari,” I sighed. “We’ve had this conversation.”
“Then say yes,” she replied. “Why don’t you want this?”
“I... just can’t do that, I’m sorry,” I mumbled. I knew that I should’ve told her about my family... I just didn’t. I wanted to feel free. 
“(Y/n),” Zari cupped one side of my face.
“I...,” I looked down, letting her hand drop from my face. 
“(Y/n),” she repeated. “If you can’t commit to this... to us... then I can’t keep this going. I’m sorry.”
“Zari, please-”
“Goodbye, (Y/n).”
“Zari-”
“Goodbye.”
She walked away with another glance. I placed a hand over my mouth to silence my sobs. My heart had been ripped out and it was my fault. I had hurt myself... and now I couldn’t fix it.
I walked back inside like I had so many times before. Silent and distracted. I would’ve ignored my entire family sitting in the living room if no one had said anything.
“(Y/n),” I stopped on the stairs when my dad spoke. He stood up. “I wanted you to know... we’re taking you to our church tomorrow.”
“Why, exactly,” I asked. 
“You need help,” he replied. “They’re willing to help.”
“Help?”
“I saw you,” my brother spoke up. “With that girl.”
“You want to get me help,” I mumbled before my heart stopped completely. “You want to send me away.”
“It’s going to fix-”
“I’m not broken,” I shouted. My dad walked over to me. “I’m not broken. I was set free. I was set free... and I threw that away.”
“(Y/n), please, take the help,” he said. 
“I don’t need it,” I snapped before going to head upstairs. 
“What are you doing,” he asked following me.
“Packing my stuff,” I explained. “I deserve to be free and happy. You people sending me away proves that you don’t want me to be happy... especially if it’s not by your terms.”
“Never accuse me of something like that,” my dad replied. I rolled my eyes. “Listen to me.”
“So you can preach some more? I think I’m good.”
I walked into my room, grabbing some bags. My dad was rambling at this point but I was done listening. I tried to grab my clothes and anything that had a lot of importance to me. 
“Please stop,” I said. “I am leaving... no matter what.”
I basically had to shove past my dad. I thought he’d let me walk out. Just leave and never come back... but he didn’t, he couldn’t. I ended up grabbing his wrist as he swung at me. 
“What the hell are you doing,” I asked. “You’re my dad. You’re supposed to care about me. What the actual fuck is wrong with you? I fell in love. It should be a happy thing. Plain and simple.”
He didn’t respond. I felt tears in my eyes. 
“You just don’t care,” I whispered through the tears. “You think that you failed because I fell in love with someone who didn’t have a penis. How pathetic are you?”
I stormed down the stairs. I was done with it all. My hand was on the door handle when I heard my dad speak up behind me.
“If you walk out of this house, you will never get to walk back in.”
I clenched my jaw for a second. 
“I wasn’t planning on it,” I snapped.
As soon as the front door closed behind me, I took off running. That was the glory of having a duffel bag and a backpack... no wheels to trip on while moving.
“Please still be there, please still be there,” I mumbled as I continued running. 
My steps slowed down for a second. I let out a sigh of relief when I saw the Waverider still there... and Zari still outside. I started running again.
“Zari,” I yelled. She looked over at me with confusion. I threw my bags down and hugged her tightly. “I’m sorry, I’m so fucking sorry. I’m sorry.”
“What happened,” she asked, hugging me back slowly. I moved back slightly.
“My... my brother saw us at some point,” I explained. “My whole family was waiting when I got home. They wanted to send me away to ‘fix me’. So... I ran. I ran home... to you.”
“What?”
“I love you, Zari,” I continued. “I am not going to be told that how I feel is wrong. You made me feel so free. You have changed so much for me. You became my home. You’ve healed me... or at least started to. I don’t want to lose that... I don’t want to lose you. I love you.”
“I... I love you too,” she replied. “But that’s your family.”
“No,” I shook my head. “The Legends are my real family. I want to be with my family.”
“You’re being serious,” she asked. I nodded, tears finally falling. 
I leaned forward and kissed her softly. Her hands touched my waist softly as I moved to cup her cheeks. She pulled away this time.
“I love you.”
“I love you too,” I whispered.
“Come on,” she stepped back, motioning to the Waverider. “It’s time for you to get settled in.”
“Okay,” I picked up my bags. 
I grabbed her hand as the door opened. She looked at our hands before smiling at me. I could get used to this... I already was.

Hi I have a request, but it's VERY au, but I've been thinking about it for a long time. So it's basically this: Maeve and Phoebe are best friends during the OOUIN time, I guess, and Maeve tells Phoebe about her cancer symptoms and her crush on Luis and they're at Brandon's funeral and they sit at a hidden place and Phoebe talks about Maeve's cancer and how she needs to talk to Luis and Addy, Kris, Nate, Cooper, and Luis hear. I think it would be interesting! Thanks love ❤❤ (love ur writing btw!)
ooo wow I love this idea, I’m going to pair this with another one-shot request I got where Brandon Weber is Mr. and Mrs. Rojas’ godson because they know Brandon’s parents, so basically Maeve is forced to go to the funeral to support her parents and because Brandon was her god-brother. Maeve and Phoebe are childhood best friends in this, like you suggested. Enjoy! Also this is the first time I’ve written from Phoebe’s pov so if the narration goes flat for a little while, it’s because I’m still trying to get a hang of her. Also Phoebe is being very sneaky in this fic, sorry, I like, ran out of ideas at some point. Okay I also read this over like two seconds ago it’s been in my drafts for forever basically, and I hate it but also kind of don’t? so let me know what y’all think. 
“Wanna get away?” Maeve whispers in my ear as I sidle up next to her. She looks cute today in a short black dress and leggings, and her hair is down for once. Although maybe noticing that someone looks cute at a funeral is socially unacceptable. 
“Sure,” I say as her hand slips into mine. I squeeze it once, our childhood code word for “are you okay?” that was invented when I visited Maeve in the hospital. She squeezes back with three quick squeezes: not really.
We’re standing between the church pews waiting for the funeral to start. Maeve’s been standing with her parents and Mr. and Mrs. Weber. and she looks so bored it’s actually amusing. 
“Mom, we’re gonna find seats,” Maeve whispers into her mother’s ear. 
“Sure honey,” Mrs. Rojas says absentmindedly patting the top of Maeve’s head. Maeve makes a face. “Oh, hello Phoebe dear,” Mrs. Rojas says wrapping me in a one-armed hug. She’s practically my second mother after having known her since I was three. 
“Hi,” I manage to say back before Maeve yanks me out of the aisle and down the pews to one of the doors leading to the balcony. We pause for a moment, look around, and push through the door when we’re positive no one is watching us. I don’t need to know where we’re going. Maeve and I found the perfect alcove for hiding a long time ago: on the upper part of the balcony on the same side as our family’s pews, where we can see all of the churchgoers, but they can’t see us. It’s saved us from many boring church services.
“I hate it here,” Maeve says once we drop into our usual seats. Maeve scrunches down until all I can see is the top of her head and her feet that she’s propped onto the bannister.
“Of this I am aware.”
Maeve holds her hand up and I take it in both of mine. Hers are too cold. I was honored when Maeve chose me out of all of her friends to tell me about how worried she is about her cancer coming back, but now I’m scared I’m gonna lose her every time I look at her. She’s withering away in front of me and there’s nothing I can do. “Wake me up when this is over.”
“Okay,” I say. The funeral itself doesn’t start for another twenty minutes, and Maeve spends the entire time with her head on my shoulder, her eyes closed. I’m not sure if she’s sleeping or pretending, but I squeeze her hand in mine and lay my head on top of hers. I’m drifting off too when I feel someone tapping my shoulder. I turn to see not only Addy Prentiss standing over me, but Cooper Clay, Nate Macauley, Luis Santos, and Cooper’s boyfriend Kris too.
“Hi,” I whisper.
“Is she asleep?” Addy asks, reaching forward to tentatively run a hand through Maeve’s hair. I glace up at her, and catch sight of Luis looking at her with that longing look he reserves for only her. I love Maeve with my whole heart, but even I have to admit that running out after their kiss was a jerk move. 
“Very,” I confirm.
“She’s so adorable,” Addy whispers as she drops her hand to her side. “We’ll sit back there so we won’t wake her.” She says, waving to the seats a few rows back. I nod as Maeve stirs against me.
“I know,” I whisper back with a nod as Addy steps away. Before I can think much of it I call Nate’s name. 
“Yeah?” He asks, looking at me weirdly.
“Bronwyn’s not here?”
Nate shakes his head. “She couldn’t get a plane here fast enough. Why?”
I shake my head, pursing my lips. I want to tell him and all of Maeve’s friends about her cancer so badly, but I can’t betray Maeve’s trust. She’s been my best friend for thirteen years. I’d be lost without her. 
“I hate funerals,” Maeve mumbles to me a moment later when the priest’s microphone screeches so loudly Maeve startles out of her slumber. 
“I know babe.” 
“God I can’t believe he’s gone,” Maeve says. She shifts a little, her right foot slipping down the banister. 
“Neither can I.” I’m hyper aware of the people behind us even though they probably can’t hear us, and I really hope Maeve doesn’t bring up my relationship with Brandon.
“I feel bad for my parents. I mean, god to lose your godson.”
My head snaps towards Maeve, who’s staring up at the ceiling. “I forgot about that. Jesus, I just called your godbrother an asshole. I’m so sorry.”
Maeve raises an eyebrow at me. “I hated him Phoebe. I just feel bad for saying that about him now that he’s not...” Maeve trails off.
“With us because of illicit activities?” I offer.
Maeve smiles. “Let’s not make it sound like he was a cult sacrifice Lawton.”
For some reason, that makes me double over laughing. Maeve sits up and shakes me. “Shut up someone will hear us.” I wave Maeve away and sit up. 
“Okay, okay, sorry.” 
Maeve smirks at me as she slides back down in her seat. I glance behind us and see Addy holding onto Cooper’s arm as she laughs. I catch her eye, glance down to make sure Maeve isn’t looking at me - she’s not - and then point to Addy, tap my ear, and then wave at Maeve and I. I’m trying to ask if they can hear us, but I must look like a madwoman. Thankfully, Addy understands because she nods vigorously. I give her a thumbs up and turn back towards the priest as he lists off Brandon’s virtues. None of which he actually possessed. 
I bite my lip as I contemplate my next words. Maeve doesn’t know that anyone’s behind us, and asking her about her cancer and her crush on Luis would be deceptive. But I also know Maeve. She’ll never talk about those things unless pushed. 
Oh what the hell? You only live once and all that crap. 
I start off with a logical question: “Are you gonna miss him?”
Maeve turns to me. “Who? Brandon?”
“Yeah, I mean he was your godbrother.”
“And?”
“And you’ve always wanted a brother, right?”
“I’ve wanted an older brother Phoebe. Not a jerk who pushed me into a pond, poured coffee onto my lap when I was wearing shorts, and called me Cancer Girl for like, three years.”
Ouch. When she puts it that way, my question was pretty dumb.
“Right. Well, it’s too bad you don’t have an older brother that’s nice. Not that Brandon would have counted anyway, he’s younger than you.”
Maeve gives me her you’re such an idiot look. “Um, Phoebe, have you met Nate?”
“I have,” I say.
“Then you’ve met my older brother.”
“Right. Sorry, I should have remembered that.”
“Mhm.” Maeve goes back to staring at the ceiling, and I glance back to Addy and co. Addy’s mouthing “awww” at me with her hands over her heart, and Nate’s smiling a little at the back of Maeve’s chair. Oh yeah they can hear us all right. 
“Too bad Knox doesn’t have older brothers,” I say.
“Why?” Maeve asks.
“Because then they would have been like your brothers when you dated him.”
“I suppose so.”
“Luis has an older brother.”
Maeve’s still staring at the ceiling, so I risk a glance back behind me. Addy’s grinning at me and Luis is rolling his eyes. 
“So?” Maeve asks.
“So if you dated him, Manny would be like your brother.”
Maeve rolls her eyes. “Good to know,” she says in her end of conversation voice. 
“I know right? You could ask him out you know.”
“No.”
“But Maeve why not?”
“No.”
“Maevey.”
“No.” 
I can’t stand seeing Luis’s disappointed face, so I don’t turn around.
“Okay, give me one reason why you shouldn’t date the very kind, very handsome, and very in love with you person, who would say yes in a heartbeat.”
Maeve looks at me, her eyes searching my face. “It would be unfair,” she finally says.
“To who?”
“To whom,” she corrects, sounding and looking exactly like Bronwyn. 
“Right, that.”
“It would be unfair to Luis. Because I’d be dating him under false pretenses.”
“What?”
“False pretenses Phoebe, it means-”
“I know what it means, I just don’t understand what you mean.”
“Because I’m dying.” 
Wow okay. I pause for a moment. I glance behind me to see five equally stricken faces. Looks like Maeve really didn’t tell anyone other than me. 
“But Maeve you don’t know that. because you won’t tell anyone.” My voice rises with frustration and I’m scared I’ll start yelling and won’t stop. I’ve had weeks of pent of fear and anger inside of me, and the fear of losing my best friend is the straw that might just break this camel’s back.
“God, Phoebe, stop yelling. And I do. I mean, I’ve had every symptom except joint pain.”
“Well that’s good,” I say sarcastically. “We’ll just wait for you to rot and die and if your joints start hurting along the way we’ll consider telling someone.”
Maeve stares at me. “Don’t you dare tell Phoebe Lawton.”
I’m too angry to think about the consequences when I wave dramatically behind us. “I didn’t need to babe. You did it for me.”
Maeve sits up, turns around so quickly I’m afraid she’ll get whiplash, sees Cooper, Kris, Addy, Nate, and Luis sitting behind her, sighs, and slouches back in her chair. 
I’m taken aback. “You’re not gonna yell at me?”
Maeve doesn’t answer, her hands over her face. Fear surges through me and I lean forwards to take her arms and shake her. “Maevey, Maevey are you okay? Please don’t be crying.”
There’s a cry of alarm behind me, and within an instant, Nate and Addy are on Maeve’s other side. 
“I’m not crying,” Maeve mumbles, her voice angry but resigned as she pulls her hands away to reveal her bloody nose. 
Nate’s pulled a napkin out of his pocket before I can even realize what’s happened. 
“Where are your parents Maeve?” Cooper asks urgently. He, Kris, and Luis have joined us.
“Downstairs.” I glance down to see the procession leaving the church. I catch sight of Mrs. Rojas’s red curls in the sea of black. 
“Hurry they’re leaving,” Addy says urgently, but Cooper’s already gone. I turn back to Maeve as she sobs into Luis’s shoulder. Fear surges through me causing my heart to thump and my head to hurt until Mrs. Rojas arrives with Cooper on her heels. 
The next hour and half is a blur. I’m in the waiting room of Bayview Hospital next to Addy. My head is on her shoulder and she’s stroking my hair. “She’s gonna hate me,” I say, staring at the wall.
“She’s not,” Addy says.
“Yes she is.” I insist. 
Cooper puts his hand on my knee. “You did the right think Phoebe. Maeve knows that.”
“I hope so. But if she doesn’t die, I’m gonna kill her. Did she really expect me to be able to keep a secret like that?”
Nate shakes his head. “That’s Maeve for you.”
I smile at him. “It’s cute she thinks of you as a brother.”
Nate gives me a half grin. “She’s been my little sister from the moment I had an actual conversation with her. I’m just glad she feels the same way.”
“She talks about you a lot. Well, all of you. You mean a lot to her.”
“Glad to hear it,” Luis says darkly. He’s thinking about their kiss, I can tell. 
“Especially you,” I say to him. “She’s just scared of hurting you. Give her time.”
“Time for what?” Maeve asks as she walks into the waiting room behind her mother. 
“For admitting you’re in love with Luis.”
“Right,” Maeve says. She looks too tired to be embarrassed. “Want to sleep over Phoebe?”
“What? You don’t hate me?”
Maeve smiles. “I could never. I needed a push, and you knew it.”
“Well thank god I thought I’d have to start asking Emma for rides to school.”
Maeve rolls her eyes at me as we all stand and walk towards the exit. “Love you Maevey Laevey” I say, using my childhood nickname for her as I throw my arm around her. 
“Back at ya Phoebe Jeebies.”

After Infection
This is a rewrite and hopefully eventual completion of a massive multiverse mash-up of my OCs with a couple belonging to @whenromancesmoked and a few others from back in the day. I have absolutely no idea if anyone else is going to be interested in reading this (ok, I know a few people who will probably read it) but psh. I’m having fun and want to share.
Note: This is also a George Romero tribute of sorts. Like I started it for giggles because my PB for one of the characters was in the Dawn of the Dead remake and it just snowballed, which I guess means I should throw a WARNING: ZOMBIES sign up here or something. Anyway!
After Infection: Dawn of the Dead
It had seemed like a good idea at the time – or, well, more accurately, it had seemed like the right thing to do. There was a request from fellow hunters in a small town a few hours’ drive south and things had been quiet lately back home so Nate had figured that they could spare the time and energy. Besides, Dennis had been going pretty stir crazy for a while. Even if it was a hunt, it would be a good excuse to get out on the road for a while, a sort of vacation.
It had not turned out even remotely like a vacation.
They had been a little too late to the original party but apparently just in time for things to get much, much worse. Nate had brought a variety of tools just in case but he had primarily been prepared for an infestation of what locals called “hell rats,” a creature that was pretty common in the south and usually pretty easy to handle if you found their nests quickly enough. Sure they were venomous but as long as you were careful… He had not been expecting an infestation of zombies.
“The lot looks pretty clear right now.” Dennis is hunched over at the door, using the peephole to take a quick survey of the goings on outside their hotel room while Nate brews a second pot of coffee to get him through whatever the morning brings. After all, as long as decent coffee is available, he might as well take advantage of it. Lord knows he might have to go without for a while and God help his poor boyfriend’s patience if that happens.
When Dennis stands up straight again, his head is just about even with the top of the doorframe and he yawns as he leans back against the door, arms crossed over his chest. “So, come up with any plans yet or are we still waiting for the caffeine to kick in?”
Nate snorts into his cup and foregoes actually taking a drink for the moment in order to respond. “You ask that like I have any idea what sort of plan to use here. I’ve met exactly zero hunters who’ve actually had to handle zombies in the past decade at least. I honestly don’t think they’ve ever been a problem this far north before.”
“Well, there sure are a lot around here for something that’s never been a problem.”
“Some forms of infection can spread at an exponential rate in populated areas.” He drains a good half of the coffee in hand. “Our best bet is probably just to find out if there are any other non-infected people anywhere around here.”
Dennis flops across the bed, face down, with a muffled grunt.
Nate just silently continues drinking as the percolator finally finishes beside him and he very seriously considers making a third pot, just in case.

Zombies – shambling, groaning, flesh-eating, nearly Hollywood perfect zombies. For fuck’s sake. This should have been such an easy fucking job and now there are zombies.
Viktor strings together another line of curses, voice little more than a low growl, as he chambers another cartridge. Beside him, a terrified little girl whimpers. He simply scowls, sets Glock number one aside, lights a cigarette, and pulls out number two. “Zatraceně zasraný vědci.” Leaning over toward the window, he catches sight of a proper target and empties the last bullet into the back of its skull. What a fucking cliché.
This was supposed to be simple. They had agreed on that fact the moment that the specifications of the job had crossed the table. It should have been routine, easy money. Three towns, three targets, each plan the same; get rid of the scientist, call their employer, and let the clean-up crew come in and deal with the rest. The first two hits had gone off without a hitch. So, of course, it just figures that last one would have to be so much more complicated than it should have been.
“I—I—I w-want m-m-my d-da—daddy.”
Viktor’s jaw clenches as he exhales – slow and even, two thin streams of smoke – as he reloads the gun in hand and wills himself to remain calm. His patience is wearing thin at this point, though. He had not planned for going into this as usual and coming out as a babysitter. The target’s five-year-old daughter was not supposed to be in the house at the time of the hit. She only stayed with him on the weekends. What an absolutely brilliant turn of events that this was apparently the first Monday that she had ever spent with her father.
Dropping his half-smoked cigarette on the floor, he shoves himself up to his feet. He had lost contact with Miguel some time earlier, likely as a result of the scientist’s neighbor backing into an electric pole at full speed after one of the zombies had rushed her car. The impact had cut power to the entire neighborhood and he can only assume that it must be the cause of the interference. With long-range communication down, that leaves only one alternative: he needs to get within the functional range of their radios. Unfortunately, the hit had been planned for the late evening and he had only been able to make it as far as a vacant apartment building a couple blocks away before night had started to set. From here, short-wave does him about as much good as a water pistol.
“Come on.” Viktor has already reached the door and taken quick stock of the corridor beyond by the time he bothers to look back. Unsurprisingly, his unwanted charge remains unmoved, still curled up as small as she can possibly make herself, which is pretty damned small.
“A-are you g-g-gonna take me b-back to da-daddy?”
God give him strength but that stuttering is getting real old real quick. “Ne.” He swings the door open as quietly as possible and waits for a moment, listening for any movement outside, before carefully stepping out and making his way to the stairwell. With the knowledge that their escape route is currently free of hostiles, he takes a deep, centering breath and heads back to where he began.
“Look, holčička.” He crouches down in front of the child and tries to sound as reasonable as possible. Given his current level of frustration, he thinks that he is doing a fairly decent job. Miguel, however, would likely disagree. “Either you just come with me and go wherever I go, quietly and without complaint, or I leave you here. Your choice.” Yeah, Miguel would definitely disagree.
From the way that the little girl’s eyes go so much wider than he would have ever imagined possible, he feels safe in assuming that she disagrees as well and, five minutes later, they are creeping down an alleyway with more stealth than Viktor ever would have expected of a kindergartener.

What was taking so long?
That is the question that had led Alex out of the band’s bus and that was the question that he now wants to keep from crossing anyone else’s minds. This is all way too fucked up, like the should not be real kind of fucked up. None of this should be happening.
On the ground, backed up against the flat tire of the car that their driver had originally gone to help, Alex kicks hard into the jaw of what may have once been a perfectly lovely young woman and sends her sprawling backward where she lands on top of the monster still gnawing on the corpse of a man who should have still been living and breathing and driving their goddamn bus. Alex’s hand gropes around behind him for anything even remotely useful as a weapon and lands on the tire-iron just in time to smash it into the face of the dead woman once more lunging in his direction. Another strike as she tries to get up and he cringes and almost loses his lunch at the feeling of her skull cracking open and her brain splattering across the pavement. Hell, he really might have lost it if not for the howl coming at him far too fast. This time, he opts not to look as the hears the wet crunch and just leaps to his feet and starts running back toward relative safety.
“Alex?”
Oh fuck. “Stay on the bus, Val!”
“Don’t you fucking tell me what to do, Niccols! What the fuck is going—”
Alex fails to hear the rest as he spins around to slam the tire-iron as hard as he can into something else behind him. This time it gets yanked right out of his hand as the body drops and he scrambles back onto the bus, practically picking up a protesting Val in order to get her out of the way of the door that he immediately slams closed. He lets her go as he collapses into the driver’s seat, wide-eyed and hands shaking, and it takes him a moment to register the sound of his dog whimpering by his knee, let alone that of his own name. When the world comes back into focus, though, Val is staring at him in horror. It takes him another moment to realize why.
“Alex? What the fuck happened?” Whether she sounds more panicked or angry, Alex is far too dazed to tell. Her hands reach for his face, his shoulders, moving down to check every inch. “Are you okay?”
Taking a deep breath, he raises a hand to wipe at his face. No. No he is not okay. “Yeah. I’m fine.”
Val does not look like she believes him at all. “Is that—Fuck. That—That’s blood! Why the fuck are you covered in blood?”
Breathe, Alex. Always a good plan to breathe. “Shh. Don’t…” Never mind. Telling her to keep it quiet is pointless. Everybody else will have heard it already.
He shoves himself back to his feet, legs weak and wobbly, and stumbles as he makes his way through the curtain that separates the cabin from the rest of the bus. It is instantly evident that the rest of the band did, in fact, hear all of that. All three of them are already staring at him before he even properly steps into view. He is pretty sure that Sasha is the one choke out an “on shit” and it is definitely Macy whose response comes out as barely a squeak.
“Blood?” On his feet now, Macy rushes in to cling to Alex’s shirt, bodily fluids not withstanding. “None of it’s yours, right? You’re not hurt? You’re okay?”
Again, Alex reminds himself to breathe, turning just enough so that he can see where Val still stands in the doorway, Parker lying on the floor a foot or so behind her, his ears back and expression scared. For her part, Val is gripping the doorway so tightly that Alex can only assume that she is trying very hard not move and crowd him any further.
“None of it’s mine.” He looks at the faces around him, all of them staring, all confused and various degrees of frightened. It brings everything right back into focus. “We need to—” It takes a deep breath in and a slow breath out to get his thoughts back in line. “Everybody grab a bag, pack food, necessities, just—just whatever.” Stepping a little closer to Val, just near enough to pull one of her hands down from the wall and give it a quick squeeze. “We gotta get outta here.”

Nate leans out of the passenger side window just far enough to level his sights on one of the creatures that already looks less human and fires. One shot, between the eyes, and it hits the ground and disappears beneath the feet of its companions. He hears a quiet gagging sound come from the driver’s seat and finds himself feeling a bit queasy in turn. They are both going to need to make some real changes to their perspective re: what constitutes a monster and they need to make those changes really quickly because as of right now, it is going to be really difficult to get out of this mess without completely rewiring their conscience.
“Um, Nate?”
With barely a glance spared toward Dennis, Nate focuses himself on reloading. “Yeah?”
“How many, uh—how many of them are back there?”
The question gives him pause but Nate squints to get a count anyway. “About a dozen in view. Why?”
“Because we need to, uh—we have to stop for a minute.”
Nate drops back into his seat so quickly that he nearly smacks his head off the door. “We what?”
Not even bothering to look at him, Dennis simply peels one shaking hand off of the steering wheel to point at something ahead. “We have to stop.”
Nate has to squint but he starts moving the moment that he sees exactly what Dennis is looking at. “I’ve got the door.”
It was rather obvious even from a single glance at a decent distance that the man up ahead, standing stock still in his torn slacks and a blood, rolled shirt-sleeves, was staring straight past the car speeding toward him and cursing the sight of the ever-growing number of zombies trailing behind. Dennis hits the gas and is slamming the breaks in what feels like no time.
Nate shoves the back door open and feels like there is really no room for argument when he shouts to the man to get in but he has been wrong before and apparently he is right now. Instead of heading straight for them, the guy curses in a language that they are now close enough for Nate to tell is definitely not English and turns away.
“Hey!” Dennis spins in his seat to look behind them, which Nate is sure that he immediately regrets. “What the hell? What’s he doing?”
“I don’t know. He’s just—” And that is when the stranger pulls his gun, takes out three approaching zombies in relatively rapid succession, and finally turns to sprint back toward the car. “—getting a little girl.”
The child is practically flung into the back seat and their new passenger wastes no time slamming the door behind himself and snapping, “Go. Now.”
Dennis really does not need to be told and floors it the second he knows the door is closed.
“Take a left onto Carver,” the man continues, his tone speaking volumes regarding how unwilling he would be to hear any question or protest. “Follow signs for the mall plaza.” He leans out the window to pick off a few more of the monsters before Nate’s slightly incredulous look catches his attention and his scowl is honestly pretty terrifying. “You’ll be out of gas before the edge of town so, under the assumption that you wish to live—”
Nate’s eyes narrow in suspicion but Dennis has absolutely no qualms against following the orders of anyone with a plan right now and practically takes the aforementioned turn on two wheels when he nearly misses it.

“Are you sure you can hotwire this piece of shit?”
“It’s not a piece of shit, it’s a fucking classic.”
Val rolls her eyes at that as she continues trying to calm the utterly panicked Macy currently clinging to her so tightly that he might as well just climb into her goddamn skin. “Fine. Can you really hotwire this ‘fucking classic’?”
Two seconds later, the engine revs up as Alex sits back in the driver’s seat with a trin and a waggle of his stupid eyebrows. Sasha squeals in relief and flings her arms around him from her place in the back seat, as he laughs. “My mechanical genius is wasted on this red wire green wire bullshit.”
He pops the trunk just as something begins to stir inside of the nearby diner and Val shoves Sasha aside to squeeze Macy in so that she can help Nico load their bags at record speed. By the time she flings herself into the front passenger seat, there are already zombies starting to stumble out of the woodwork. Fuck seatbelts. “Gun it!”
Alex hits the gas and they peel out of the parking lot just as the diner’s doors give way.
He had tried to explain what had happened while they packed. It had felt impossible for Val to actually wrap her mind around it at first but once she had seen the mess outside? She had practically dragged Alex and Macy off in search of the nearest source of potential transportation. They needed to find something quickly and it needed to be something fast and she needed to not think about how painfully familiar the blood and gore looked, though she had only ever seen anything like it in her nightmares. When Alex had needed to stop and vomit into the nearest garbage can, she had a feeling that she understood why and a little pocket of rage flared to life in her chest – not because he had to stop but because he never should have been the one to wind up with someone else’s blood on his hands.
“Where are we going?” Macy is the one to finally ask, almost inaudible from where he has curled up against Sasha now, and Val catches his eye in the rearview mirror before she looks toward Alex.
Alex, however, is entirely too focused on driving to really think but so much and instead catches her eye before clearing his throat. “Nick?”
In the back, Nico turns away from the horrors outside of his window. “What?”
“How do you defend yourself against a zombie invasion?”
“Wha—Zombies aren’t exactly my specialty here.”
“No,” Alex agrees, “but zombies are supposed to be a helluva lot dumber than, say, Reavers, right? You know Reavers.”
“So?”
“So how would you defend yourself against an invasion of retarded Reavers?”
The drummer just stares at him for a moment with an expression that plainly says that he may consider that to be the dumbest question that he has ever heard. Eventually, thought, there is an answer. “I’d find the most well-stocked, easily-fortifiable location I could think of and hope I could wait out the attack or find some other way to get through them.”
There is silence in the car and then Alex shrugs. “All right. So, where’s the most well-stocked and easily-fortifiable location we can think of?
Five minutes later, they find themselves screeching into the parking lot of the local mall. The location almost seems somehow normal, given the situation at hand. In fact, were it not for the shrieking horde behind them or the knowledge that Alex is currently doing seventy into a public lot, it might almost feel a little reminiscent of home. Val almost finds it funny, really. What’s funnier to her than coming to a mall for safety, however, is the fact that they were obviously not the only ones with that idea, as they are definitely not the only ones pulling into the place with a bunch of undead goons straggling along behind them.

“Miguel.”
There is a burst of static in his ear as Viktor leans out to empty his 22 into the crowd of creatures still chasing behind the car that had picked him up on the highway. Once within range, he takes out a couple of the ones latching on to the other car that had pulled in to the lot at about the same time, too. When his magazine clicks empty, he makes a snap decision to save his 20 for later and drops back into the seat to reload. The driver glances at him in the rearview, looking a little bit frightened, while the original passenger only eyes him for a moment before leaning out of the other side with a freshly loaded shotgun. His fellow gunner might not be terribly trusting but at least Viktor can respect that. Besides, who needs trust? The guy’s a fairly good shot.
“Zatratím tě, Miguel!” The little girl still curled up beside him whimpers. He can hear it over the gunfire, the static, all of the goddamned zombies. It is grating on his very last nerve. “Odpovídáš mě!”
He could hope for no better response than to lean back out just in time to watch as a line of four hostiles drops one by one.
“En ingles, ’mano.” Another line of undead hit the ground as the line sputters out then clears up again, leaving room for easily the most welcome voice he has ever known. “Now where the Hell have you been?”
Viktor nearly laughs. “We can trade stories later, miláčku. Right now, I need cover fire while I try to get these people into the posraný mall.”
“Going shopping?”
“Sklapni. We try the mall or they come to your shop.”
“How many?”
Viktor glances toward the other vehicle still circling around the parking lot with them. “Eight plus me.”
“Well, if they dropped you—”
“Miguel.”
“Sí, sí, the mall sounds like a plan. There’s a garage off to your right. No good angle for me to shoot the lock off but I can keep the number of uglies down while you get in.”
“Děkuji.”
“That means thank you, sí?”
Viktor rolls his eyes. “Sí.”
The line bursts back into static with a laugh.

As it turns out, the garage door does not, in fact, require a shot to the lock. It rolls up just enough for the two cars to through before Dennis’s little hatchback even hits the ramp. On the other side, a young woman motions for them to hurry while two men in security uniforms stand to either side of the entrance to help keep the monsters at bay, though it appears that this Miguel guy really only needs the most basic of assistance. His precision is honestly kind of terrifying and Dennis is just as glad not to see any more examples of it as he swerves off to one side so that the other car has room. Nate and their scarier passenger are both out before he even has the damned thing in park, seeing to it that nothing gets in the way of girl at the door to slam the thing shut.
“We saw you on the security cameras,” of the security guards explains as he climbs up to try and jam the gears.
The other car’s driver takes a moment to collect himself, then grabs a wrench and makes his way over to the ladder. “Here. Let me have a look at that.”
“Figured we couldn’t just leave you out there.” The guard climbs down to let the driver up. “Then Shannon said she thought you were headed this way.”
“Thanks.” Dennis finally climbs out only to stretch over the top of his car.
The woman now known as Shannon simply smiles. “No problem. Mercy for your fellow man or something like that.” She laughs and shrugs, looking slightly flustered, though that is probably to be expected, all things considered. “Anyway, come on. Let’s get you all inside. We’ve got food, clothes, relatively comfortable furniture… We’ll get you poor things all cleaned up and sorted out in no time.”
There is a general rumble of agreement as the little group follows her to the door that leads into the connected store, allowing themselves to be ushered toward where another girl is waiting somewhat impatiently. That is, they all follow along aside from one man, anyway, who simply mutters something into his headset before switching it off and making his way back over to the hatchback. Shannon looks back, confused, as does Nate, though he looks more suspicious about it.
Dennis just sighs. “The little girl.” Then he ducks through the doorway and drags Nate away after the rest.

“Come on, holčička.” Viktor crouches down beside the open car door with a sigh as the child remains curled up in the center of the back seat. Children. How did anyone actually deal with children, let alone have them by choice?
The little girl simply whimpers and mumbles, “There are monsters out there.”
Well, at least the stuttering has stopped and he supposes he can concede that she has a fair point. “The monsters are outside, not with us.”
Before he can receive a response or think of anything more convincing to say, there is someone else coming up behind him, bending down to look the child in the eye with a painfully sympathetic and all too sugarcoated smile. He might be able to handle the sight of it at any other time but right now, with everything that he has just been through and the way that she has the gall to place one of her hands on his shoulder as if—God, he would really like to wipe that smile off of her face.
“Hi, there,” she says, voice floating in a way that speaks plainly of a familiarity with appeasing people under the age of seven. “I’m Shannon. What’s your name?”
Caught slightly off-guard, the child squeaks. “Um. I—I’m—” The little girl shoots a quick glance toward Viktor then, almost as if asking permission to speak with this new stranger before she finally answers. “I’m Amanda.”
Shannon’s smile becomes even brighter, even sweeter, if that is even possible, and Viktor has to dig his nails into his palms to keep himself from taking out her kneecaps when she leans even further over him, hand squeezing his shoulder. “Amanda? Well, that’s a pretty name! Are you hungry, Amanda?”
The little girl nods.
“Well, we’ve got all sorts of food inside. We’ve got toys, too, and games and books and all sorts of neat stuff.”
“And—and no monsters?”
Shannon laughs. “And no monsters.”
Still curled up in the seat, Amanda chews worriedly at her lip for a moment longer, eyes flashing back and forth between the two adults still there in the door. Shannon keeps smiling, encouraging. Viktor just stays crouched there with a clenched jaw and a headache starting to build behind his eyes. When the girl finally moves, though, it does not go entirely as expected. Rather than reaching for Shannon’s offered hand, she instead launches herself forward to wrap her little arms tight around Viktor’s neck and duck her head in under his chin, completely unaware of the rather undignified look of surprise that he is entirely unable to keep off of his face. Unhelpfully, all Shannon does in response is giggle.
